Morris Paper Mills The first paper business in Morris was the Allen Paper Car Wheel Works, which functioned as a straw milling operation for the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago.

The business was named for Richard N. Allen, who invented the paper car wheel in 1869. In 1881, the Allen Paper Car Wheel Company, located in Chicago, relocated to Morris and built a processing plan. The plant straw was pulped, made into board and cut into circles, which created the core for the steel-tired composite wheels for Pullman. The paper core helped to absorb the shock from the track and provide a quieter, smoother ride for the traveler. Located on East North Street, the business operated until 1890, when it was turned over to John N. Bunnell and changed its name to the American Straw Board Company, shown in the then photograph.

Over the next two decades, the business and plant was leased, sold and restructured and operated under different names, including the Morris Box Board Company. In October 1915, the business reorganized and was incorporated as the Morris Paper Mills.

By the 1920s, the paper mill became one of Morris’ largest employers and produced boxes of every kind, color and size that were shipped all over the country.

In August 1956, the Morris Paper Mills was sold to Federal Paperboard Company, shown in the then photograph, and operated until closing in 1980. The now picture shows a view of the old Federal Paperboard Office at 960 East North Street today.

period begins for Affordable Care Act

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – People will have less time this year than they did in 2013 to enroll for health coverage through the Affordable Care Act. The second open enrollment period began Saturday and will expire Feb. 15.

During this time, Illinois residents can sign up for health insurance plans; since the last enrollment period the number of plans have more than doubled, with 400 plans offered in 2015, state officials said.

People who qualify for Medicaid coverage can apply any time.

But people shopping for private health plans will only have three months to enroll, compared to six months during the last enrollment period.

That poses a challenge for the navigators – people trained to help consumers with the health insurance marketplace – at the Will County Health Department, who are prepared to educate people about their options and help them enroll.

“If we get the same level of turnout as we did in the later stages of the enrollment period last year … if we get that to start, it will be a challenge,” said Vic Reato, the health department’s spokesman.

Federal and state officials have pushed to get more people without health insurance covered under the Affordable Care Act, a federal law its proponents say was designed to make health

care affordable and accessible nationwide.

In Will County, navigators plan to help at least 75 people a week apply for a plan, Reato said. During last year’s enrollment cycle, the

health department helped enroll more than 3,300 people. Statewide, more than 622,000 people enrolled.

People without insurance must pay a penalty each year. For this year, it’s 1 per-

cent of household income or $95, whichever is higher. For 2015, it will be either 2 percent of income or $325.

Health plans increase The number of plans

available to Illinois consumers increased from 165 this year to 410 for 2015. Competition among insurers will increase and benefit consumers as a result, state officials said.

Three new insurers offering plans in the marketplace for 2015 are IlliniCare Health Plan Inc., UnitedHealthCare of the Midwest Inc., and Time Insurance Co. The health plans offered are tiered in five categories: bronze, silver, gold, platinum and catastrophic.

Bronze plans are the cheapest, with the lowest premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs. Platinum plans have the highest premiums but lowest out-of-pocket costs.

Of the people who enrolled during the first year of the marketplace, 56 percent picked a silver plan, 29 percent picked a bronze plan, 15 percent picked gold and 1 percent picked platinum, state officials said.

Small business health coverage

Starting Nov. 15, small businesses can apply for coverage for their employees under the Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP, marketplace. Just like the marketplace for individuals, employers can compare and shop for plans.

The program is open for small businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees and includes nonprofit organizations. Illinois does not allow businesses to have an employee choice option, which would allow them to select a plan category – such as bronze – and allow employees to choose a plan from insurers in the category. Neighboring states do offer the option, such as Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Keeping a childhood promise Ex Joliet resident loved history and shared that many ways

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When former Joliet resident Dolores Gallagher was a fifth-grade student at Eliza Kelly Elementary School in Joliet, she did two things.

She raised her hand when her teacher asked, “Who would like to memorize ‘The Gettysburg Address?’ ” and she announced her desire to be a teacher, said Marlene Pagliei of Crest Hill, Dolores’ sister.

“On Memorial Day at the Will County Courthouse, she gave ‘The Gettysburg Address,’ ” Marlene said. “I remember sitting there. She wore her yellow dress. When you don’t have a lot of money for clothes, you remember a yellow dress.”

From where did Delores gain her love of history? Perhaps it went back to her being born in the same room in the same Indiana house as her father was born, Marlene said.

At any rate, Dolores used that love for history and teaching in many ways.

After receiving her teaching degree from Eastern Illinois University, Dolores taught for two years in Joliet at Forest Park School, then three years in Denver.

From there, Dolores and her husband Dan moved to Genoa, where Dan’s family lived, Marlene said. Dolores taught for 25 years for the school district of Genoa-Kingston CUSD 424 and immersed herself in the fabric of that small town.

Dolores was an active member of St. Catherine of Genoa Church, the Genoa Garden Club – one of the oldest garden clubs in Illinois, Marlene said – the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society, the DeKalb County Quilters Guild and the Main Street Committee.

She even collected recipes and wrote the forwards for two cookbooks, Marlene said.

One was simply called, “Genoa Garden Club.” Dolores’ forward included a history of that club, from 1928 to 2003, the publication date.

The second, “Pioneer Day Cookbook 2014,” published by the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society, included many recipes from the late 1800s to early 1900s, recipes handed down from the submitters’ mothers and grandmothers, Marlene said.

But then, Marlene said, Delores also loved cooking. They both learned to make ravioli from their mother and still prepared it during the holidays, Marlene during Christmas and Delores on New Year’s Day. Delores’ other specialties included bagna cauda and gnocchi, Marlene said. They both clipped and shared cookie recipes from newspapers and periodicals. Many years ago, Marlene even won a Herald-News recipe contest with a zucchini recipe from Delores, she said.

But Dolores also blessed Marlene with her passions.

She made a Civil War-style quilt in memory of a vacation they took to Mississippi. Marlene had the quilt appraised and learned it was worth $1000.

An avid reader, Dolores also recommended books.

Marlene’s favorite of those books was “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” which Marlene has, in turn, recommended to others.

“She was such a nice person and never said a bad thing about anyone,” Marlene said.

Ultimately, Dolores’ husband Dan believes, Dolores was a person of love.

Early in their courtship, he said, Dolores said she had much love in her heart for others and that she revealed her soul to him through her eyes and their correspondence. Dolores was 76 when she died Sept. 21.

“She was an extraordinary person to have known for over 51 years and as a teacher,” Dan sad. “I am still one of her students.”

After one year, many to thank

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent There were no village boundaries according to the mayor of Diamond Terry Kernc.

When it came to people assisting her tornado ravaged community after the Nov. 17, 2013 disaster, Kernc said the clean-up was a seamless effort made up of people from the village, neighboring communities, counties and the state.

Where people were from didn’t matter, she said, everyone pitched in. Monetary contributions even came in, she said, from across the country.

In a one year anniversary commemoration held Sunday at Coal City Community High School, “thank you’s” were spoken to those who assisted with the cleanup in the aftermath of the tornado.

“We are 95% recovered.

We cannot take credit for that,” Kernc said.

She also spoke and introduced Coal City’s Mayor Neal Nelson, of whom she said, “No one wanted to have a tornado, but if you

do you need to have neighbors like them [Coal City].”

Kernc admitted not everyone was introduced, nor could they be. She said volunteers numbered in the thousands.

Administrative heads of many of the assisting organizations were brought to the stage to be personally thanked and hugged by Kernc.

Coal City High School Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg spoke, as well introduced the high school show choir and Madrigals.

When students clamored to help last year, Bugg said he felt that emergency responders, clean up crews and families needed a mental pick-up.

Quickly, Footnotes, the Coal City Show Choir and the Madrigals were sent to Diamond to perform in the streets for the crews of workers.

Bugg said there wasn’t a dry eye left when the students sang.

Saturday was the beginning of the second period of enrollment and also the day where county health department counselors helped educate and enroll people in Joliet. Reato said people will be able to enroll at six permanent locations in Joliet, Bolingbrook and University Park. A complete listing of the sites will be available soon.

He said the health department is hoping to see many people come in to get health coverage, especially with the shorter time period.

“It really would behoove them to get it done during this period. The quicker they get it done, the quicker they get coverage,” Reato said.

Each of the scholarship recipient families has several children in the Ravens program, so while one student from each was awarded the scholarship, it helps out the entire family, Coyle said.

Shorewood HUGS is at it again – granting wishes to area people and it isn’t even Christmas yet.

The nonprofit organization’s mission is to help people who are struggling in some manner by granting a wish.

This group of volunteers reaches out to their contacts and finds ways of helping people feel better when times are tough or life gets difficult.

HUGS reached out Friday to a whole group of girls from Dirksen Junior High in Joliet.

Dirksen teacher and now coach, Erin Dooley, along with Jessica Reeder started the school’s first cheerleading squad. The tryouts brought out 49 girls who wanted to make the team.

“They [Dooley and Reeder] wanted to have something to get more girls involved in activities,” said HUGS member Kelli Gannon.

The cost of uniforms for the

sport can be expensive, Dooley said in writing a wish request to HUGS, and can be prohibitive to some families.

This is a bright ray of hope in some of these young girls’ lives and can instill hope in their future, Dooley said. She wanted to add to that and make each member on the squad feel a part of the team.

HUGS came through, again, buying team warm-up jackets for all 12 girls on the squad, Gannon said.

The jackets were not personalized so they can be used for many years to come by different members of the cheerleading team.

The jackets were a surprise for the girls on Friday. Dooley assembled them in a room to meet Gannon. They all stood in cheerleader-style attention. After talking a bit about HUGS, Gannon presented their surprise.

“They were very gracious, very sweet and excited,” Gannon said. “This is the first squad for the school.”

Nelson also introduced 8-year-old Markie Chandler who made bracelets and sold more than $800 worth, which was donated to the tornado victims.

Kearc said so much money was donated that a fund was established at Mazon State Bank. The Community Foundation of Grundy County helped disburse the money.

Forty-four thousand dollars was contributed to the fund and in turn redistributed to those whose homes and businesses were damaged.

St. John Lutheran Church Food Pantry (stjohnfood.org) is always looking for volunteers the pantry is open Tues (12:30pm), Thurs (9-11am), and Sat (9-11am). Pantry volunteers are also needed the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month to help unload the Northern Illinois Food Bank delivery at approximately 9:30/10am. In 2013, the pantry served more than 330,000 pounds of food to over 20,000 people.

It makes no difference how much or how little time you can spare, Green Harvest Food Pantry ( http://www.greenharvest.org/volunteer/ ) can use a helping hand to feed those in need. Work as little as two hours a week or once a month.

He was taken as a prisoner of war by the German army shortly after his glider plane crash landed near Carentan, France. Bill spent the next eight months as a P.O.W., being liberated by the Russians in February 1945. After returning from the war, Bill and his wife, Vivian, raised their family in E. Brooklyn and Coal City, Illinois.

He ran Finn’s Grocery Store in South Wilmington for a time, worked at the Joliet Arsenal, and Amoco Chemical in Joliet.

Besides serving his country, Bill spent countless hours serving his church and his community.

He was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, CCD Teacher, and Church Trustee at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church, and an active member of Braidwood Knights of Columbus Council #1574, 4th Degree. Bill was a charter member of the Coal City Emergency Squad and the Coal City Area Club, fire-

ARTIS V. KOEHLER Artis V. Koehler (nee Moore), age 77, peacefully Tuesday, November 11, 2014, with her family by her side, following a yearlong battle with a chronic illness.

Born in Princeton, Illinois, she was raised in Morris, and was a lifelong Joliet/ Shorewood area resident. A graduate of Joliet Junior College and Joliet Township High School Class of 1955.

Artis loved people, and her greatest achievement in life was raising her family and giving of herself 100% in and out of her home. Some examples of this would be serving on the Troy-Shorewood Library District Board, the Citizens Advisory Board, Shorewood Cable Television Network, the Plainfield Homettes, the Shorewood Police Advisory Board and many, many others.

Her employment at the Troy Grade School District 30-C as a teacher’s aide where she was “Mom” to many, was particularly rewarding. Truth be known, she had a profound impact on those who needed a little quiet guidance. She was formerly employed at St. Joseph Medical Center in the Radiology Department.

Although, only the good Lord knows when it is our time, our humanity makes us feel that “she is gone too soon”.

Preceded in death by her parents, Clell and Eleanor (nee Ames) Moore; one brother, Dwight “Slim” Moore; one sister, Darlene Colwell; and beloved sonin-law, Wayne Eungard (2013).

Lawmakers refocus on state school funding formula

SPRINGFIELD – With the November election behind them and a new Republican governor stepping in, Illinois lawmakers are preparing to once again take up a proposed overhaul of school funding that would direct more state money to poorer rural districts at the expense of wealthier suburban ones.

School superintendents from across the state are expected to attend an Illinois House hearing on proposed legislation Tuesday at the beginning of the Legislature’s fall veto session. Republican Gov. -elect Bruce Rauner and other Republicans have expressed concerns about the bill, which was proposed by a Democrat, passed by the Senate but not taken up last spring in the House.

Top House Democrats held a series of private meetings on the issue over the summer.

Central to the legislation’s fate are two highly-charged issues: educational equity for students and the efficient use of tax dollars.

Chicago girds for winter with more plows, salt

CHICAGO – Mindful of last winter’s visit from the polar vortex, Chicago is girding for colder weather with a bigger stockpile of salt and more snow plows.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other city officials briefed reporters Saturday on the preparations.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation is armed with 115,000 more tons of salt than last year, bringing the total stockpile to 400,000 tons. Its fleet of 280 snow-clearing vehicles includes 19 new snow plows and four smaller, four-wheel

drive plows.

Still, the city is asking for backup from residents and building owners, urging them to clear sidewalks and, in particular, to keep fire hydrants from becoming buried.

Man convicted in Virginia faces trial in Illinois

WAUKEGAN – A former Marine sentenced to death in Virginia in a Navy sailor’s 2009 slaying has been returned to Illinois to stand trial on charges that he killed two young girls nine years ago.

Jorge Torrez was 16 when he allegedly stabbed 8-year-old Laura Hobbs and 9-year-old Krystal Tobias on Mother’s Day in 2005. The girls were playing in a forest preserve in Zion, north of Chicago.

A bond hearing was held Saturday in Illinois’ Lake County in which a judge ordered that Torrez be arraigned on Dec. 10, according to The Daily Herald.

The girls’ killings generated national attention largely because Laura Hobbs’ father, Jerry Hobbs, was charged in the slayings after giving what he said was a false confession following more than 20 hours of questioning. Hobbs spent five years in jail before DNA evidence taken from his daughter’s body linked Torrez to the crime.

Proposal calls for ‘historical racing’ machines

SPRINGFIELD – A Republican lawmaker from southwest Illinois has proposed a plan allowing betting on old races as a way to boost the horse racing industry, an idea that has raised questions in other states.

State Rep. Dwight Kay of Glen Carbon introduced legislation last week allowing so-called “historical racing” machines, according to a story published Sunday by the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers.

The terminals that resemble slot machines allow betting on previously run races that

are stripped of identifying markers.

Kay said the generated revenue could help tracks, like Fairmount Park in Collinsville, as legislators take another look at a statewide gambling expansion.

“They are trying to stay alive,” Kay said.

Kentucky and Arkansas allow historical racing, while Texas is facing a court fight over the machines. Last week a judge said the Texas Racing Commission exceeded its authority by clearing the way for historical racing at dog and horse tracks.

Proponents of the idea have said the additional money can help struggling racetracks.

But opponents who worry about social costs of expanded gambling have labeled the machines as “horse slots.”

In Illinois, previous efforts to expand gambling statewide have failed. Gov. Pat Quinn, a Chicago Democrat, has vetoed plans adding more casinos and slots over concerns about ethical safeguards.

Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner, who takes office in January, has said he doesn’t like the idea of slot machines at Chicago’s major airports but wouldn’t oppose adding casinos if local communities support it.

ISU student found dead in dorm room

BLOOMINGTON – Authorities said an Illinois State University student has been found dead in his dorm room.

In a news release, McLean County Chief Deputy Coroner Seth Reynolds said the male student from Bartonville was found unresponsive by campus police late Saturday afternoon. Family members had requested a check on his well-being.

The student was later pronounced dead. Authorities said there is no sign of foul play.

The student’s identity has not yet been released.

An autopsy is set for Monday morning.

Arthur Markwalter was born September 29, 1923, in Chicago, to Arthur and Anna Marie (Bergstrom) Markwalter. He attended Chicago Public Schools (Seen HS).

During WWII, Mr. Markwalter served in an Army Air Corps (Sergeant) B-24 Bomer Unit Commanded by Jimmy Steward.

He graduated from the University of Illinois, where he met and married Mary Agatha Morwood (October 8, 1949), before moving to Joliet in 1957.

Mr Markwalter worked as a supervisor for General Electric, and as a national parts manager for Zenith Electronic Corporation (Rauland subsidiary). First and foremost, he enjoyed spending time with family. Following his retirement, he enjoyed daily golf game with friends and continued to be an avid University of Illinois and Chicago sports fan throughout his life.

Arthur Markwalter is survived by his twin sister, Arleen (Horace Jack) Fisher of Chicago; a daughter, Linda (Ray) Karges of Joliet; two sons, Thomas (Mary) of Mason City, IA, and Bruce (Shirley) of Ottawa, IL; the grandchildren, Sarah, Amy, Alyssa; two great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Trinity; and nephew, Doug (Miriam) Fisher.

Boy falls from Ferris wheel at Arizona carnival

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. – Authorities are investigating the fall of a teenage boy from a Ferris wheel in suburban Phoenix.

Police said the 14-year-old boy was at the El Mirage Fall Festival on Saturday night and fell between 15 and 30 feet from the ride.

The boy was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and was conscious when emergency responders transported him.

El Mirage police Sgt. Robert Peoples said Sunday the boy was still hospitalized, but his injuries are considered nonlife-threatening.

Peoples said police are conducting interviews and that it is too soon to say what led to the boy’s fall.

By GRANT SCHULTE The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. – Congress is suddenly scrambling to vote on the Keystone XL oil pipeline, but the fate of the oft-delayed $5.4 billion project could still wind up in the hands of an obscure commission in Nebraska that regulates telephones, taxi cabs and grain bins.

The Nebraska Supreme Court is expected to rule within weeks on whether the Nebraska Public Service Commission must review the pipeline before it can cross the state, one of six on the pipeline’s route. Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman gave the green light in January 2013 without the panel’s involvement.

The commission’s possible role is part of the tangled legal and political history of the pipeline and raises questions about whether it will continue to be snagged even if the Senate votes to approve it next week as expected. The House voted 252161 Friday to move forward with the project. President Barack Obama, who has delayed a decision pending the resolution of the Nebraska issue, has not said whether he would sign the legislation.

The proposed crude-oil pipeline, which would run 1,179 miles from the Canadian tar sands to Gulf coast refineries, has been the subject of a fierce struggle between environmentalists and energy advocates ever since Calgary-based TransCanada proposed it in 2008.

“I don’t know if they think they can just override Nebraska,” said Randy Thompson, one of three landowners who filed suit to challenge the state’s approval process.

“If we win our case, I assume TransCanada is going to have to go back to the drawing board.”

While there’s no way to tell how the Nebraska Supreme Court will rule on the issue, the justices tend to defer to the lower courts’ decisions, said Anthony Schutz, a University of Nebraska associate law professor.

“The separation of powers argument is a pretty powerful argument,” Schutz said.

“We’ve spent a lot of time since the early 1900s finding ways to distribute executive power, and the governor is left with a fairly limited realm of authority.”

The high court has two justices appointed by Heineman, a Republican, and five by former Democratic Gov. Ben Nelson.

Project supporters say the pipeline should now be ready to go forward even if TransCanada has to seek the state’s approval once again.

“We believe the federal government has taken entirely too long to make a decision. I don’t see any issue with the Senate voting on it and the president approving

it” before the Nebraska issue is resolved, said Ron Kaminski, business manager for the Labors’ Local No. 1140, an Omaha-based union that supports the project.

Nebraska officials became supportive of the pipeline after TransCanada agreed to change the route to avoid the ecologically sensitive Sandhills region in the remote northern part of the state.

In 2012, the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a law allowing Heineman to give the go-ahead.

But opponents have charged that the state constitution gives that power to the Nebraska Public Service Commission.

The elected commission regulates “common carriers” that are used to transport goods, energy and people.

The panel includes four Republicans and one Democrat.

The commission generally takes about seven months to approve or deny an application, said Dave Domina, an attorney for the landowners.

The Nebraska attorney general’s office has argued that the 2012 law was constitutional.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – The Nigerian army has regained control of Chibok, the northeastern town where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped by Islamic extremists more than six months ago, said army officials.

The army wrested back control of Chibok on Saturday, about 48 hours after it had been captured by the Islamic militants of Boko Haram, Nigerian army spokesman Brigadier General Olajide Olaleye told the Associated Press.

“Chibok is firmly in the hands of the Nigerian army.”

Olaleye told the AP. “Chibok is free. Secured.”

He encouraged Chibok residents to return to their homes.

The town of about 60,000 in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state had been captured by Boko Haram insurgents on Thursday night.

Thousands of residents fled when the rebels entered the town shooting from pickup trucks and motorcycles.

Islamic State beheads U.S. aid worker

The Associated Press BEIRUT – The Islamic State group has beheaded Peter Kassig, releasing a video Sunday showing a masked militant standing over the severed head of a man it said was the former U.S. Army Ranger-turned-aid worker, who was seized while delivering relief supplies in Syria last year.

President Barack Obama confirmed Kassig’s slaying after a U.S. review of the video, which also showed the mass beheadings of a dozen Syrian soldiers.

The 26-year-old Kassig, who founded an aid group to help Syrians caught in their country’s brutal civil war, “was taken from us in an act of pure evil by a terrorist group that the world rightly associates with inhumanity,”

Obama said in a statement.

He denounced the extremist group, which he said “revels in the slaughter of innocents, including Muslims, and is bent only on sowing death and destruction.”

The slain hostage’s parents, Ed and Paula Kassig, said they were “heartbroken” by their son’s killing, but “incredibly proud” of his humanitarian work. Kassig “lost his life as a result of his love for the Syrian people and his desire to ease their suffering,” the parents said in a statement from Indianapolis.

With Kassig’s death, the Islamic State group has killed five Westerners it was holding. American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff were beheaded, as were British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning.

Unlike previous videos of slain Western hostages, the

footage released Sunday did not show the decapitation of Kassig or the moments leading up to his death.

“This is Peter Edward Kassig, a U.S. citizen ... who fought against the Muslims in Iraq,” said the black-clad militant, who spoke with a British accent that was distorted in the video, apparently to disguise his identity. Previous videos featured a militant with a British accent that the FBI says it has identified, though it hasn’t named him publicly.

The footage released Sunday identifies the militants’ location as Dabiq, a town in northern Syria that the Islamic State group uses as the title of its English-language propaganda magazine and where they believe an apocalyptic battle between Muslims and their enemies will occur.

Prosecutors troubled by extent of military fraud

By ERIC TUCKER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Fabian Barrera found a way to make fast cash in the Texas National Guard, earning roughly $181,000 for claiming to have steered 119 potential recruits to join the military. But the bonuses were ill-gotten because the former captain never actually referred any of them.

Barrera’s case, which ended last month with a prison sentence of at least three years, is part of what Justice Department lawyers describe as a recurring pattern of corruption that spans a broad cross section of the military.

In a period when the nation has spent freely to support wars on multiple fronts, prosecutors have found plentiful targets: defendants who bill for services they do not provide, those who steer lucrative contracts to select business partners and those who use bribes to game a vast military enterprise.

Despite numerous cases

that have produced long prison sentences, the problems have continued abroad and at home with a frequency that law enforcement officials consider troubling.

“The schemes we see really run the gamut from relatively small bribes paid to somebody in Afghanistan to hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of contracts being steered in the direction of a favored company who’s paying bribes,” Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell, head of the Justice Department’s criminal division, said in an interview.

In the past few months alone, four retired and one active-duty Army National Guard officials were charged in a complex bribery and kickback scheme involving the awarding of contracts for marketing and promotional materials. A trucking company driver pleaded guilty to bribing military base employees in Georgia to obtain freight shipments – often weapons which required satellite tracking – to transport to the West Coast.

More recently, a former contractor for the Navy’s Military Sealift Command, which provides transportation for the service, was sentenced to prison along with a businessman in a bribery scheme in which cash, a wine refrigerator and other gifts traded hands in exchange for favorable treatment on telecommunications work.

Also, three men, including two retired Marine Corps senior officers, were charged with cheating on a bid proposal for maintenance work involving Marine One helicopters that service the White House.

Justice Department lawyers say they don’t consider the military more vulnerable to corruption than any other large organization, but that the same elements that can set the stage for malfeasance – including relatively low-paid workers administering lucrative contracts, and heavy reliance on contractor-provided services – also exist in the military.

States working to fix health care websites

By STEVE LeBLANC The Associated Press BOSTON – The state that served as a template for President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act had so much trouble coordinating with the federal government that it became a model of another sort: ineptitude.

The Massachusetts website, designed by the same contractor that worked on the troubled federal website, performed so poorly it prompted a public apology from Gov. Deval Patrick and forced health care officials to adopt a series of manual workarounds, creating a backlog of more than 50,000 paper applications.

Massachusetts was one of several states where the ambition of running their own health insurance marketplace inside a new federal system ran into a harsh reality.

Some, like Oregon and Nevada, folded and decided to go with the federal exchange for the second round of open enrollment, which began Saturday. Others, like Maryland and Massachusetts, fired their technology contractors

and are hoping for better results this time.

It hasn’t been cheap.

The original cost of Massachusetts’ website was estimated at $174 million. That has jumped to $254 million. When launched, the website was incompatible with some browsers and was riddled with error messages and navigational problems. The problems were so bad, federal officials gave the state three extra months to meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. Patrick said there won’t be a repeat of the disastrous roll-out this time around, saying the state has “been testing and retesting” the revamped website. Minnesota’s state-run exchange, MNsure, wasn’t ready for prime time when it launched in 2013.

Some of the technical glitches that frustrated consumers remained unresolved by the time the open enrollment period closed. MNsure officials are promising a better experience this time – with more call center workers and a website that’s 75 percent faster. But they also acknowledge the system won’t be perfect.

The pope’s remarks Sunday to visitors in St. Peter’s Square follow by a few days an outbreak of violence against refugees in a working-class neighborhood of Rome. Riot police were sent in after several days of anti-immigrant tensions.

Residents insisted they are not racist, just fed up by authorities’ neglect of their rundown neighborhoods on the outskirts.

Francis suggested local churches could host meetings so all sides could listen to each other and make plans together. That way, they can “overcome every suspicion and prejudice and build ever safer, peaceful and inclusive co-existence.”

Added Francis: “What’s important is not surrendering to the temptation for clashes.”

WASHINGTON – When U.S. spy chief James Clapper flew to North Korea on a mission to bring home two U.S. captives, he ran into a potential hitch.

North Korean officials wanted a diplomatic concession of some sort in return for freeing the men and Clapper had none to offer.

“I think they were disappointed,” Clapper said, fleshing out details of the secret trip a week after its completion.

It was not until he was ushered into a hotel room for an “amnesty-granting ceremony” that he knew the release of Americans Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller would proceed as planned.

All told, the trip unfolded more smoothly than his first foray into North Korean air space, aboard a U.S. helicopter in December 1985.

“They shot at us, and fortunately we made it back to the South,” he told CBS’ “Face the Nation” in an interview broadcast Sunday. At the time, Clapper was intelligence chief for U.S. forces in South Korea.

This time, he was a presidential emissary with a deal in the works and permission to land.

Clapper arrived in Pyongyang in the dark, was taken to a guest house and was met by a small party led by the state se-

curity minister and a translator. A “terse” dinner followed, hosted by the head of the Reconnaissance Guidance Bureau, which Clapper described as a combination intelligence unit and special operations force.

North Korea “feels itself to be under siege,” he said.

“There is a certain institutional paranoia, and that was certainly reflected in a lot of things that he said.” Clapper heard complaints about the U.S. interfering with North Korea’s internal matters. “It wasn’t exactly a pleasant dinner.”

He brought a short letter from President Barack Obama characterizing North Korea’s willingness to release the pair as a positive gesture. But the North Koreans wanted more.

“I think the major message from them was their disappointment that there wasn’t some offer or some big – again, the term they used was ‘breakthrough.’”

Afterward, Clapper waited hours until he got word he had 20 minutes to pack his luggage for a drive to a downtown hotel. It was then he knew he would be leaving with Bae and Miller.

At a ceremony, Clapper exchanged handshakes with his North Korean interlocutor, the prisoners changed clothes and they left for the flight back.

NEW LENOX – Although offense has been such a big part of Providence Catholic’s success this season, its defense often gets overlooked.

But whether the Celtics have employed a punishing rushing attack or a proficient passing game throughout the years, one thing that you’ve always been able to count on from the guys wearing the green and gold is their defense is going to make you earn everything.

That’s why it should come as no big surprise on a cold afternoon in the Class 7A quarterfinals that Providence would be able to fall back on its old staple – tough defense – when the chips were down against Wheaton Warrenville South on Saturday.

In a good, old-fashioned defensive battle that surely delighted the purists in attendance at Bishop Kaffer Stadium, the Celtics ground out a 23-6 victory over the upset-minded Tigers to advance to the semifinals for the 16th time in school history.

Although lineman Luis Vasquez stole the headlines by recording a safety, a picksix and some big sacks, coach Mark Coglianese’s team received strong efforts from a variety of players.

“Offense at times has carried us, but it was the defense’s turn today,” Coglianese said.

“Not only to shut them down like they did, but to put points on the board while the offense was kind of struggling to find things. We knew how good their (WWS) defense was, but we’re also confident in our defense.”

The game was similar to Providence’s lone loss of the season, a 10-7 defeat Oct. 4 at Loyola Academy, in which both squads struggled mightily to score.

But this time, facing an equally strong defense, the Celtics were able to come up with some big plays that provided the momentum to eventually get their offense going.

Defense acquits itself, slams door on Vikings

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – The Soldier Field scoreboard didn’t function properly most of the day, but there was no mistaking a 10-0 Bears deficit after 15 minutes.

It almost was a case of déjà vu for the Bears, who’d made a habit of falling behind early during a three-game skid, with the opposing tight end yet again inflicting the damage.

Except, aside from a 23yard Jerrick McKinnon run on the opening series – one extended by Willie Young jumping offsides – that led to a field goal, and another special teams breakdown on a beautifully executed fake punt on fourth-and-2 that set up Minnesota’s only touchdown, the Bears’ defense played with energy and an apparent chip on its shoulder after consecutive beatdowns.

In fact, in the second quarter, as the Bears were storm-

ing back on big plays from their biggest offensive stars to tie the score, the Bears’ defense was impenetrable.

Minnesota mustered only two first downs in the second and third quarters, failing to cross the 50-yard line until late in the fourth.

There were no receivers running open across the field or athletic quarterbacks making plays with their legs outside the pocket. But there was a consistent Bears pass rush, tighter coverage on the back end and the Bears’ star defenders, Lance Briggs and Jared Allen, to name a few, finally playing a starring role.

“It was just the fact that we had to go out there and play our style of football – going out there and compete and not give up big plays and give them cheap shots,” Tim Jennings said. “So, we were able to go out and execute and get back to playing disciplined. ... We just kind of relaxed and got back to sound football.”

The Bears permitted a sea-

son-low 243 yards – with 48 coming off the fake punt. Allen and Young each recorded sacks and consistently kept Teddy Bridgewater out of his comfort zone, and aside from the first-quarter touchdown, the entire defense played with much greater focus and discipline.

Sluggish Soldier Field: The Bears’ recent struggles were reflected in a high number of no-shows – 6,472. But the 55,320 in attendance witnessed scoreboard malfunctions that forced both teams to rely on the officials keeping time on the field as the game clocks were turned off.

“The Daktronics scoring and timing system experienced several malfunctions today during the game,” read a statement distributed after the game by the Bears. “At this point in time, it is undetermined what caused the issues. Daktronics is investigating whether the cause was software or hardware related. Despite a preventative

maintenance program with Daktronics that includes having 2 technicians on site for each game, the problem was not able to be corrected during the game.”

Points at premium: Despite racking up 468 yards, the Bears managed only 21 points. Robbie Gould missed his first field-goal attempt in three games, a 47-yarder wide right on the Bears’ opening series. But play caller Marc Trestman’s hot and cold aggressiveness also played a part. An odd Jay Cutler keep-

er on fourth-and-goal at the 1 on the Bears’ first secondhalf series was stuffed. That was after Trestman opted not to go for points with 1:05 remaining before half and his team retaining possession at the 26-yard line with a fourpoint lead. The Bears twice attempted – and converted – short fourth downs at the Minnesota 27- and 6-yard lines to give them a two-score lead on Brandon Marshall’s second touchdown almost midway through the fourth quarter.

Third-down defense: Mel Tucker’s unit stood tall on third down, holding the Vikings to a rate of 2 for 11. Credit goes in part to a pass rush that hit him five times, but also the coverage that forced Teddy Bridgewater to either throw the ball away or check down short of the sticks.

Scoring points: The 21 points the Bears scored didn’t reflect a team that gained 468 yards of offense and racked up 24 first downs. They left points off the board several times, from the botched QB sweep on fourth-andgoal at the 1 to the two interceptions thrown in Vikings territory. A penalty knocked them out of field goal range and they couldn’t cash in at the end of the half.

It put the Bears in the lead for the first time in a game since Week 6, and for good in their first home win.

What now?

At the end of the third quarter, the Buccaneers’ Blair Walsh missed a 38-yard field goal. It was only the kicker’s second miss inside 40 yards in 44 career opportunities (his other came at Soldier Field in 2012). That would have cut the Bears’ lead to 14-13; instead, the Bears engineered a 16-play, 72-yard touchdown drive that took 7:35 off the clock to take a 21-10 lead.

On second-and-3 from the Bears’ 8-yard line, Bridgewater attempted a zone read play, something that often has killed the Bears this season. Lance Briggs was in position, Bridgewater didn’t have great footing and went down for no gain. The defense held on third-and-3, forcing a field goal to stay up by eight points.

High-five to Plainfield Central’s best

The Southwest Prairie girls volleyball MVP. And three members of a softball team with ideas of becoming one of the best in Plainfield Central history.

A high-five to Kahmari Montgomery, Elizabeth Hyland, Michaela Schlattman, Hannah Franceschini and Gretchen Egly, who were honored last Wednesday at the national letter-of-intent signing ceremony in the Central auditorium.

Montgomery, who won the 200 and 400 last season as a junior, will continue his track career at Missouri. His feat last spring marked the first time a Plainfield sprinter won two state titles in the same year.

Lewis will gain the services of Hyland, an outside volleyball hitter whom coach Eric Vogt has referred to as “the cornerstone of the program.”

The Wildcats finished 2712 this volleyball season with Hyland and libero Renata Mendez the only seniors and were 12-2 and tied for second in the Southwest Prairie. Their season ended in a three-game loss to rival Plainfield North in a sectional final.

Schlattman will play on the NCAA Division I level at Miami of Ohio, while Franceschini and Egly will join former Plainfield Central standout Cailey Baker at Missouri S&T. Montgomery, a receiver on the football team, said he will go into the spring with a goal to repeat in the 200 and 400, “and this year I want try to get there in the 100, too.”

Montgomery said he plans to major in psychology. He said he had other offers but Missouri was his first choice. “I know a lot of people there,” he said. “It is where I want to be.”

Central coach Jon Periero said he is “excited to see what Kahmari can do this year. He has a massive upside, not that what he already has done isn’t big.

As for the softball players, “Good for them,” coach Anne Campbell said. “They knew what they wanted to do, play on the next level, and they will do that.

“Michaela has been on varsity for four years; and the other two, Hannah and Gretchen, are going into their third years. They’re both very good students and want to go into engineering.”

Campbell said Schlattman “has good speed and is a great shortstop. She also has a great bat. She sees the ball so well.

Ever since I had her as a cross country runner in middle school, I knew she could accomplish some good things.”

Schlattman said although she knew where she would be signing, the actual signing day still came as a relief.

“I’m excited,” she said.

“There were two other Division I schools that I was considering, but Miami definitely was my favorite. They want me to play shortstop.”

The Wildcats lost last spring to Joliet West in a sectional semifinal and have hopes of taking it further next spring.

“We have six or seven seniors who have played together a long time,” Schlattman said. “We should be good. I love playing for coach Campbell and have confidence in our team.”

Schlattman said she will gear her studies at Miami toward becoming a special ed teacher or work in occupational therapy.

Franceschini and Egly, both of whom can play infield or outfield positions, first were contacted by Missouri S&T through their association with Baker. They plan to become engineers.

“I guess with us being good students, maybe it helps us think in game situations,” Franceschini said. “We should have a very good team. We have a young pitcher and catcher who are getting better.”

“We want to go further this year,” Egly said. “We want to go to state so bad.”

“I know our opponents will throw a lot at me this year; but the good thing is, we have lots of guys who can play,”

Jordan said. “There will be options.”

A wing/shooting guard by trade, Jordan said he may play inside “now and then to throw them off” and put his

increased strength to greater use.

McGee, a starting outside linebacker on a Bengals’ football team that qualified for the playoffs the past two years, is the first baseball player from East to earn a Division I scholarship. He will catch again next spring. When he gets to Oakland, however, he said he will begin as a “utility guy, with second base a possibility.”

“The big thing about Mike is his tremendous bat speed,” Bengals coach Adam O’Reel said. “He is a high-contact guy. He faced [Plainfield South’s Shane] Ritter and [Joliet Catholic’s Nick] Dalesandro and hit them well. He is not blown away by the big fastballs.

“He also is a competitor, a hard-nosed player.”

McGee said that as an eighth-grader, he thought hard about whether he would attend East or Providence.

He decided on East, where he “wanted to be part of making history in football and baseball.

“I wanted to be the first Division I baseball player

from here, and we made the football playoffs the last couple of years. We’re leaving a great legacy in football. Now we have more to accomplish in the spring.

“I feel playing two sports helped me develop my athletic ability and helped me become a man.”

McGee said he had other offers but chose Oakland, which has moved to the Horizon League, because “they made me feel so welcome. Signing with them feels awesome.”

Rio, a left-handed hitting outfielder, hit .411 for coach Chris Morris’ East softball team last spring. She sets the table.

“I’m a bunt-and-slap hitter for the most part, and I feel like I’m a good center fielder,” she said of what she brings to the Bengals and will bring to Northern Illinois. “My job is to get on base, steal second and from there be able to score on a hit.”

Rio said her time spent at East has helped her grow “as an athlete and as a person.”

Suarez had been a soccer player in his youth, and “I struggled to convince my mom I wanted to run instead of playing soccer, But I finally did. [Becoming a runner] had to be an act of God pushing me to reach my full potential.”

And look at him now, running off to Notre Dame.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “I’m going to one of the best Division I running programs and one of the best academic institutions in the country.”

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East baseball player Mike McGee had the difficult assignment.

He followed basketball standout Aaron Jordan on Thursday as Plainfield East held its national letter-of-intent signing ceremony in the school media center.

McGee and Jordan joined softball player Jessica Rio and cross country and track runner Joseph Suarez as the Bengals honored four seniors who will continue their athletic careers on the NCAA Division I level.

McGee will attend Oakland (Mich.), Jordan is headed to Illinois, Rios will move on to Northern Illinois, and Suarez signed with Notre Dame.

The format of the program, which turned emotional, called for each of the four, one by one, to sit at the center table and give their speech of thanks to family, coaches, teammates and teachers who helped them reach this highlight in their young lives. Jordan led off and he could not get through his thank-you’s and his expression of love for his family without shedding tears.

“Anyone have tissues?”

Jordan said as he finished.

After Jordan returned to his chair, McGee walked to the center table and sat down.

He glanced at Jordan, shook his head and just said, “Aaron,” as if to say, “How am I supposed to follow that?”

Afterward, Jordan said, “Thank God I got through this.” He called the signing day “a big weight off my shoulders. It’s a great feeling to be going to Illinois. I really like the coaching staff and team there.”

The Herald-News Player of the Year last season, Jordan said he feels he is stronger now and that adding even more strength will be a priority when he gets to college.

Rams stifle Manning, upset Broncos Harvick wins THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS – Shaun Hill was effective in his first start since regaining the quarterback job and the St. Louis Rams defense made life miserable for Peyton Manning in a 22-7 victory over the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Rookie Tre Mason had 29 carries for 113 yards, the most allowed by the Broncos’ top-ranked run defense.

Kenny Britt had four catches for 128 yards with a 63-yard score and Greg Zuerlein was a career-best 5 for 5 on field goals for the Rams (4-6).

Manning was 34 for 54 for 389 yards with two interceptions but was held to a 42-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders, ending a streak of 15 consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes.

The Broncos (7-3) were held to 28 yards rushing.

Manning threw incomplete from the 37 in the first quarter, and rookie Aaron Donald’s sack helped end a drive in the fourth quarter on fourthand-4 from the 28.

CHIEFS 24, SEAHAWKS 20: KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City stopped Seattle on fourth down three times late in the fourth quarter, holding on for a tense victory in a matchup of playoff contenders.

Jamaal Charles ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and Knile Davis also ran for a score, as the Chiefs (7-3) won their fifth straight game and moved into a tie for first in the AFC West.

Russell Wilson threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, and Marshawn Lynch had 124 yards rushing for Seattle (6-4). But the Seahawks’ star running back, fresh off a four-touchdown game, was stuffed twice by the Kansas City defense with the outcome hanging in the balance.

PACKERS 53, EAGLES 20: GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers passed for 341 yards and three touchdowns, Julius Peppers returned his second interception of the season for a score, and Green Bay’s defense stuffed high-octane Philadelphia for a rout.

The matchup of NFC contenders quickly became a blowout with the Packers (7-3) racing to a 30-6 halftime lead. Rodgers threw for two touchdowns in the first half, while Micah Hyde scored on a 75-yard punt return.

Philadelphia (7-3) was held to 11 points below its NFC-leading scoring average by a Packers defense rejuvenated since Clay Matthews moved to inside linebacker.

Rodgers broke Tom Brady’s NFL record of 288 straight passes at home without an interception.

CARDINALS 14, LIONS 6: GLENDALE, Ariz. – Drew Stanton threw touchdown passes to Michael Floyd on Arizona’s first two possessions and the Cardinals held Detroit without a touchdown, beating the Lions in a matchup of teams with two of the best records in the NFC. Stanton, starting after Carson Palmer was lost for the season with a knee injury, threw TD passes of 42 and 12 yards. After that, Arizona’s offense stalled and Stanton threw two interceptions. But the Lions couldn’t convert either turnover into a touchdown.

Arizona won its sixth in a row to improve to an NFL-best 9-1. The Cardinals have their best record through 10 games since 1948. Detroit (7-3) was held without a touchdown for the first time this season.

TEXANS 23, BROWNS 7: CLEVELAND – J.J. Watt caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Mallett, dominated on defense and Houston climbed back to .500 with a win over Cleveland.

Watt was all over the field. Along with his TD, he recorded a strip sack, made five tackles – three for a loss – recovered a fumble and hurried Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer into several bad throws.

Mallett threw a pair of TD passes and finished with 211 yards in his first career start. The four-year veteran was promoted during the bye week after the Texans (5-5) benched Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Texans rookie running back Alfred Blue stepped gained 156 yards on a franchise-record 36 carries.

The Browns (6-4) won’t spend a second straight week atop the AFC North. They lost for just the second time in seven games, and Watt is the main reason why.

49ERS 16, GIANTS 10: EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – San Francisco rookie linebacker Chris Borland intercepted a fourth-down pass by Eli Manning at the 49ers 2 with 4:43 to play, capping a goal-line stand in a victory that sent error-plagued New York to its fifth straight loss.

Borland had two of the 49ers’ five interceptions as the Niners (64) survived a game in which a big advantage in time of possession and takeaways did not translate into a blowout on the scoreboard.

Colin Kaepernick threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree and Phil Dawson kicked three firsthalf field goals as the 49ers won their second straight on the road.

BENGALS 27, SAINTS 10: NEW ORLEANS – Andy Dalton rebounded from one of the worst outings of his career

by passing for three touchdowns, and Cincinnati handed New Orleans its second straight loss.

For Dalton, the game represented a dramatic reversal from a week ago, when he completed only 10 passes for 86 yards and had a passer rating of 2.0 in a 24-3 loss to Cleveland.

Against New Orleans (4-6), Dalton gave the Bengals (6-3-1) an early lead they never relinquished. He was 16 of 22 for 220 yards, did not throw an interception and finished with a passer rating of 143.9.

Two of Dalton’s touchdown passes went to tight end Jermaine Gresham and the other to A.J. Green on a pinpoint 24-yard pass along the sideline.

Drew Brees passed for 255 yards and one TD to Kenny Stills.

FALCONS 19, PANTHERS 17: CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Matt Ryan threw for 268 yards and a touchdown, Matt Bryant added four field goals and Atlanta moved into a tie for first place in the lowly NFC South with a win over Carolina.

Bryant’s 44-yard field goal with 2:08 left put Atlanta ahead for good, and the Falcons (4-6) withstood a late Carolina rally.

Carolina’s Graham Gano missed a 46-yard field goal try with 1:27 remaining and had a 63-yarder blocked as time expired.

Cam Newton threw for 292 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough for the Panthers (3-6-1), who have lost five straight.

CHARGERS 13, RAIDERS 6: SAN DIEGO – Philip Rivers threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Floyd on the game’s third play from scrimmage, and San Diego held on for a lackluster victory against winless Oakland (0-10), extending the Raiders’ losing streak to 16.

The Chargers (6-4) snapped a three-game losing streak and welcomed back Ryan Mathews, Manti Te’o and Melvin Ingram, who had been out since September.

BUCCANEERS27,REDSKINS7: LANDOVER, Md. – Mike Evans caught seven passes for 209 yards and scored two touchdowns to help Tampa Bay (28) end a five-game skid against the Redskins ((3-7).

Evans became the first rookie to post three consecutive 100-yard games with at least one touchdown in each since Randy Moss in 1998. According to STATS, he’s also the first rookie with 200 yards receiving and two touchdowns since Anquan Boldin in 2003. Evans finished 7 yards shy of Vincent Jackson’s franchise record of 216. Evans is the youngest player in NFL history with a 200-yard receiving game.

Homestead to claim 1st title

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Kevin Harvick charged through the field, picking off car after car, passing two other title contenders on a series of restarts. As he aggressively chased the victory and his first Sprint Cup title, it was clear that winning did indeed matter most in NASCAR’s new championship formula.

Harvick won Sunday night’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a desperate drive from 12th to first in the final 15 laps. He didn’t have to win the race; he only had to finish higher than the other three title contenders in this revamped Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

But nothing short of a win was going to get it done on a night in which Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman and Joey Logano all showed up determined to claim their first career championship.

“You had all the championship guys show up at the Kevin front of the pack,” Harvick Harvick said. “I was just going to hold the pedal down and hope for the best.”

The four drivers all found themselves racing each other at the front of the field after the sun went down on the 400-mile race. It was Hamlin, the Charlotte Bobcats season-ticket holder who had Michael Jordan cheering from his pits, who seemed to have the race in control until a caution with 20 laps to go.

All four teams were forced to make tough strategy decisions that ultimately decided their fate.

Joe Gibbs Racing decided not to pit Hamlin, which moved him to second on the restart. Richard Childress Racing gave Ryan Newman four tires, while Harvick crew chief Rodney Childers also made the risky call for four tires.

Harvick restarted 12th with 15 laps to go and not much time to pick his way through traffic. As Hamlin passed leader Jeff Gordon on the restart, Harvick shot past four cars to move to seventh.

Then came another caution, and Hamlin, on old tires, knew he was in trouble.

Harvick diced through traffic to pick up another four spots and move into second.

He got by Hamlin, then Newman passed Hamlin. There was one more caution, forcing Harvick to nail one final restart with three laps remaining, and he eased his way ahead of Newman and never looked back.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Patrick Kane and Kris Versteeg each had a goal and two assists, and the Blackhawks rallied with four goals in the third period to defeat the Dallas Stars, 6-2, on Sunday night.

Kane connected from a sharp angle early in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie. Jonathan Toews, Versteeg, and Brandon Saad scored in a 2:55 span later in the period to put the game away. Defensemen Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook scored in the first period as the Hawks won for the third time in four games.

Dallas’ Curtis McKenzie recorded his first NHL goal. The Stars have dropped two straight and won just two of their last 11 (2-7-2).

The Hawks’ Corey Crawford made 22 saves, and Dallas’ Kari Lehtonen finished with 41 as Chicago fired 23 shots in the third.

Illini top Coppin State CHAMPAIGN – After a close contest against Georgia Southern in its season opener, Illinois blew out Coppin State, 114-56, on Sunday.

The Illini (2-0) opened the game red-hot, shooting 60 percent in the first half.

Ahmad Starks and Leron Black led the Illini in points with 18 each, while Malcolm Hill added 13 points and nine rebounds.

After Coppin State (0-2) hit a three to open the scoring, Illinois went on a 16-0 run and never looked back.

The Illini started 0-for-3 from the field but made 15 of their next 16 shots to put the game out of reach early in the first half.

The 114 points are the most that the Illini have scored under Groce in a non-exhibition game. The previous high was 94, set on Nov. 19, 2012, against USC.

As the holiday season rapidly approaches -- where has the year gone? -- let’s look at some of the books that have been published in the last 12 months.

Victor Mollo, who died in 1987, wrote a lot of stories about bridge-playing animals. A few years ago, many more articles were found and are being put into book form. The third is “Swings and Arrows” (Master Point Press).

If you have read one of the earlier works, you will know what to expect. If this is new territory for you, start with the original work, “Bridge in the Menagerie,” then move to the later books.

Have a look at the South hand. West opens one heart and East responds two diamonds, which by partnership agreement promises only eight playing points. What would you do?

Walter the Walrus, an inveterate point-counter, doubled. Then West redoubled, North passed, East rebid three diamonds and South completed his plan by bidding three spades. West doubled, and all passed.

The defense proceeded smoothly: diamond to the ace, heart to the king, heart ace (East discarded the club seven), heart ruff, diamond ruff, club ace, club ruff, diamond ruffed high and overruffed, club ruff, and another diamond to promote the spade eight as a trick. That was down six, minus 1,700!

And East-West could not make a game.

South had an aceless wonder that was much more defensive than offensive in nature.

He should also have realized that his partner was destitute. He should have settled for a two-spade overcall, which probably would have escaped a penalty double (or even passed throughout!).

Inflammation likely cause of nasal polyps Dear Doctor K: I think I have a nasal polyp. Will I need to have surgery to remove it?

Dear reader: A nasal polyp is a noncancerous tumor that grows from the lining of your nose or sinuses, usually in the nasal passages. Nasal polyps often grow in clusters and obstruct airflow in and out of the nose. (I’ve put an illustration of nasal polyps on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Nasal polyps can make it difficult to breathe through your nose. They can make your nose feel stuffy, decrease your sense of smell and cause postnasal drip. Though nasal polyps themselves are painless, they can make your face feel uncomfortable. People with nasal polyps have frequent sinus infections.

Nasal polyps often result from long-lasting inflammation that may be caused by chronic hay fever or asthma. But in other cases, polyps occur for no apparent reason.

An ear, nose and throat specialist can usually detect polyps by examining nasal passages with a nasal endoscope. This is a small, flexible tube connected to a light or camera. Nasal polyps appear as translucent, grapelike, yellow or gray masses.

Sometimes the doctor will use a computed tomography (CT) scan to determine the location and size of the polyps. CT scanning also will tell if the polyps are coming from the nose or from the sinuses.

Nasal polyps almost always occur on both sides of the nose. If you have a polyp only on one side, you may need to have a CT scan to make sure that the growth is not something more serious.

If your nasal polyps are small, your doctor may prescribe a nasal spray containing corticosteroids, perhaps along with corticosteroid pills.

If inflammation as a result of hay fever has caused your polyps, your doctor will recommend lifestyle changes to control your allergies. For example, stay inside when pollen counts are high, and keep air conditioners turned on in your house and car during allergy season. If that doesn’t work, then anti-inflammatory medications such as steroid nasal sprays or leukotriene inhibitors can help keep allergy-related inflammation under control.

Some polyps are caused by a reaction to taking aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs). Aspirin desensitization treatments by an allergy specialist can be helpful.

If the inflammation that caused the polyps isn’t controlled, then the polyps may reoccur. In my experience, the inflammation can be controlled by lifestyle changes and medicines – if a person really makes those changes and takes those medicines faithfully.

Sometimes, however, even if a person has done everything the doctor recommended, the polyps persist and continue to cause bothersome symptoms. In such cases, particularly when the polyps are large, surgery is required. This is an outpatient procedure in which the surgeon uses an endoscope to remove the polyp. It is simple, and recovery usually is rapid.

Dear Abby: My husband and I are pregnant with our first child. We are beyond excited and can’t wait for our little one to get here.

Our problem: My mother-inlaw is getting married two weeks after our baby is supposed to arrive, and she’s expecting all of us to go.
