Railroad Station – Mokena The manner in which Americans moved around their world changed drastically during the last half of the 19th century. Before the 1850s, the only practical way to travel and trade across long distances was along the nation’s many natural waterways.

As a result, patterns of settlement were focused along the nation’s coastal areas and the rivers. A few dirt roads connected major towns or cities, but travel on them was difficult, unpredictable and time-consuming.

By 1900, locomotives traveled along thousands of miles of rails that crisscrossed America. Large ships moved passengers and freight across oceans; smaller boats navigated the nation’s rivers, lakes and canals. Even bicycles, carriages and wagons rolled passengers over thousands of miles of local roads. In time, many new villages, towns, and cities sprouted up along these new routes.

One of the fastest growing of these new cities was Chicago. By the end of the 19th century, Chicago had become an economic powerhouse with nearly 1.7 million residents. Located at the intersection of river, lake, and railroad routes, Chicago’s industrial, manufacturing and commercial life depended on the boats and trains traveling into and out of the region. In time, Chicago became the most important railroad center in North

America.

In the first decade of the 20th century, the average American had come to depend on products from far distant places. Fruit from California, furniture and meat from Chicago, clothes from New York or more unique items from the mail order catalogues of Sears, Roebuck and Company and Montgomery Ward all crisscrossed the country with a speed and ease unheard of just a few decades before.

Both firms sold nearly everything imaginable and guaranteed delivery to at least the nearest railroad station.

buildings, or depots, were often the center of activity and communications for small-towns in America. In the years before the automobile, the railroad depot was the only means to the outside world for most people. Not only could you use the building to board your train to faraway places, but it also was where the goods you purchased were delivered. The station also was a gathering place to receive and send off loved ones, most particularly military servicemen who departed to train for service.

Looking southeast from the railroad station in Mokena, the “then” photograph,

circa 1905, shows typical commuters strolling along the platform toward the station. Notice the parcels and packages in the foreground, which probably arrived by train that day.

The Mokena Street railroad crossing can be seen to the left in the photograph, and slightly out of view is the grain and coal dealership of W.H. Bechstein. Visible to the right is the general store of John A. Hatch.

The “now” photograph shows a similar view from the Mokena Street crossing today. Notice that the former Hatch store still stands along Mokena Street today.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Safety came first at a seminar to teach young robot builders how to handle themselves in a workshop environment where injuries – including some that are life-threatening – can occur.

On Saturday, Vulcan Materials Co. safety representative Loren Smith held a cordless reciprocating saw in front of several students inside the

Joliet Township High School Administrative Center. It was one of many tools they needed to learn how to handle with extreme caution.

“If I am doing something wrong, I want you guys to stop me,” Smith said.

After attaching the battery pack, he was about to put in the saw blade when students told him to stop. They knew that with a power source plugged in, the saw could turn on and cut his hand.

Smith and several other Vulcan representatives emphasized the need for students to stay safe as they prepare to build their robots for the FIRST Robotics Competition next year.

Students who came to the seminar were part of competitive robot-building teams from Joliet Township High School District 204, Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School and St. Ignatius College Prep.

When Smith put together the cordless saw and showed students how to properly use it, he allowed Anna Hartley from Bradley-Bourbonnais to give it a whirl. Like everyone else, she donned safety glasses and wore earplugs.

“It was kind of unfamiliar,” Hartley said about using the saw. “I was kind of scared myself, but [Smith] walked me through it.”

She said it was important for students to be safe when us-

ing tools because she hears all the time about someone getting hurt.

‘Why take the risk?’

In a presentation on workshop dangers, Jason Schlee, Vulcan safety and health department manager, repeatedly asked the students, “Why take the risk?”

Resolution regarding funds passed

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – The state budget crisis has Crest Hill formally urging legislators to release motor fuel tax and other funds owed to local governments.

The City Council voted Nov. 2 for a resolution urging the state government to release motor fuel tax, gasoline sales, 911 services and gambling and video gaming revenue that be-

longs to local governments.

“It has a tremendous impact on us,” Mayor Ray Soliman said. “If we don’t receive those moneys, it affects a lot of our services.”

Soliman said some of those services include funding for snowplowing and salt purchases. The motor fuel tax revenue also helps pay for Crest Hill’s road repairs.

The state has been holding those revenues, and the Illinois Municipal League is advising

local governments to plan as if the state will use those funds to pay its own bills.

House Bill 4305, a measure that would coordinate the release of $1.9 billion in revenue owed to local governments, overwhelmingly passed a House vote Tuesday. Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration has stated support for the bill.

Crest Hill’s 2015-16 budget includes $1.76 million in motor fuel tax projects, although the city has built up reserves in its

motor fuel tax funds for road resurfacing of Gaylord Road, Theodore Street, Manico Drive and Susanna Way this year.

Finance Supervisor Ashli Motyka said the city has received a payment of about $30,000 from Comptroller Leslie Munger’s office, but the state still is holding the monthly allotments of motor fuel tax funds.

Soliman said the withholding of funds from 911 call centers is concerning.

“It will impact dispatch services to both police and fire, and that’s detrimental,” Soliman said.

City staff also released information on the 2015 tax levy.

The estimated total tax levy is $2.12 million, representing a 1.05 percent increase from 2014 at an estimated equalized assessed value of $324.83 million.

The estimated tax rate will drop from 0.6511 in 2014 to 0.6271 in 2015. The city is expected to vote on the levy Dec. 7.

Hope Manor Joliet Plainfield East names new principal construction slated to begin this winter The HERALD–NEWS

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Volunteers of America Illinois plans to begin construction this winter on a veterans housing apartment complex in Joliet.

The project is fully funded, and contract closings that precede construction are expected to take place in the third week of December, said VOA Illinois President and CEO Nancy Hughes Moyer.

Moyer said VOA Illinois plans to begin construction in late December or early January. It will take about a year to complete the four buildings at Hope Manor Joliet with some units possibly opening earlier, she said.

Applications for apartments will not be taken until 60 or 90 days before opening, she said.

Hope Manor Joliet is a 67-apartment complex being built on the old Silver Cross Hospital campus in Joliet.

The Illinois Housing Development Authority gave

final approval to the project in October, Moyer said.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced 17 housing vouchers for veterans to be administered by the Housing Authority of Joliet, which will provide them to residents at Hope Manor Joliet.

Moyer said project-based vouchers providing rental assistance will be available to cover all the residents at Hope Manor.

“There will be rental support connected to every unit,” she said. “Veterans will only have to pay 30 percent of their income toward rent.”

Hope Manor Joliet is the third veterans apartment complex to be built by VOA Illinois, which has Hope Manor I and II in Chicago.

The Joliet project will cost more than $15 million to build. Total costs, including engineering, architecture and other services associated with planning and construction, are $19 million.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East High School assistant principal Joe O’Brien will become the school’s second principal to date next school year, according to a news release from Plainfield School District 202.

The board named O’Brien the new principal at its Nov. 9 regular meeting. He will replace Principal Tony Manville, who will become the new assistant superintendent for administration and personnel July 1.

Manville opened East in 2008 and O’Brien was among

his original administrators.

O’Brien came to District 202 as East’s first dean of students.

He was named interim assistant principal in September 2008, when the original assistant principal left the district.

He has served as assistant principal since September 2010.

“His experience in opening the building in 2008 as well as being a valued member of the administrative team provide him with a strong sense of East’s history. We look forward to Joe maintaining and building on the great culture and climate that is present each and every day at Plain-

field East High School,” Superintendent Lane Abrell said in the release.

O’Brien started his education career as a health and physical education teacher at Joliet Catholic Academy from 2000 to 2006. He then served for two years as assistant dean of students at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights before coming to District 202.

“My family and I are so appreciative of the relationships we have formed with District 202 and the Plainfield East Family,” he said in the release.

“I am thrilled about this opportunity.”

Foundation awards more than $19,000 in grants The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Joliet Township High Schools Foundation held its annual grant awards Nov. 2, when more than $19,000 in grants were presented to students and staff, according to a news release from Joliet Township District 204.

The foundation has awarded more than $220,000 in grants in the past decade.

Students and staff apply for the grants, which may include funds for equipment, supplies or enrichment programs.

Grants go through a rigorous evaluation process by a committee comprised of foundation members, staff and volunteers to ensure the requests are deserving and not duplicated in the district budget or other grants. All requests must further enrich district students.

“Examples of some of this year’s awards were for standing work stations for Health classrooms, College Assessment Boot Camp, logistical assistance for students volunteering to feed the homeless, promoting peace among the

students and staff, book club supplies, materials needed to produce ceramic bowls, newer tools for the Engine Team and assistance for students in honoring Veterans at local nursing facilities,” foundation President Mark Turk said in the news release.

Speaker to talk about rum’s role in history

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – It’s safe to say rum has a history.

The smooth, sweet liquor found in our daiquiris, mojitos and rum and cokes hasn’t always been the mild-mannered liquor known today.

The history of its creation, trade and consumption is intertwined with revolution, high commerce, medical discoveries and even pirates. We all know the phrase, “Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.”

Food historian Cynthia Clampitt will give a presentation Tuesday at the Morris Area Public Library called “How Rum Changed the World,” which will share the intriguing history of the liquor.

Rum, according to Clampitt, has gone from being a 160-proof method of disinfecting bad water, to a liquor that was the biggest drink in England and North America, to a versatile mixer at bars and parties and in late night hot toddies.

It all began in the West Indies, after early European explorers found the islands had the perfect climate for the growth of sugar cane. Sugar previously was obtained in India with the spice trade.

Several things made rum popular from the beginning.

“First of all,” Clampitt said, “there was no safe drinking water ... and it was incredibly inexpensive to make. It used molasses back then, which was basically industrial waste from sugar production. ... They dumped [the molasses] in the ocean.”

Molasses itself wasn’t in demand. When it was stored in hot weather, it tended to ferment. Eventually, it was discovered that fermentation of molasses wasn’t a bad thing – and rum was born.

“Rum became very popular in trade,” Clampitt said.

Several area churches are joining together and holding an ecumenical community worship at 6 p.m. Nov. 22 at Minooka United Methodist Church, 205 Church St., Minooka.

The annual nondenominational service is meant to bring people of all faiths together to give thanks for the blessings in their lives.

A noteworthy musician, a loyal friend Joliet-area accompanist leaves behind a legacy

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Hettie Wysocki of Morris was a great accompanist with a perfect ear for pitch.

“She was easy to work with, but she did not suffer fools gladly, that’s for sure,” said Karen Sobero, Joliet-area vocalist and administrator at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet. “She had no problem telling me I was off pitch or asking me where I was going with a song.”

Casey Wysocki of Morris, Hettie’s husband, said he scheduled his wife’s memorial service for Nov. 17, the date of their 28th wedding anniversary. The service is at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Joliet, where Hettie served as church organist and choir accompanist for more than 20 years, Casey added.

He said Hettie played for many weddings and funerals through the years, along with numerous events and shows.

“She was just an all-around great person, always willing to help whenever someone needed something musically done,” Casey said.

Hettie was just 14 when she began playing professionally at her home church, Westminster Presbyterian in Joliet, Casey said. While still in high school, Hettie became the

rehearsal accompanist for a New York company’s theaterin-the-round production at the former D’Amico’s 214 in downtown Joliet, he added.

After studying music for a short time in college, Hettie proceeded to build her musical career. By her mid-20s, Hettie was playing for the shows produced by the Kiwanis, the former Curbside Theater and the Joliet Drama Guild, Casey said.

Another local musician, retired Will County Circuit Court Judge Dick Siegel of Crest Hill, said he met Hettie in the early 1970s in conjunction with those Kiwanis shows. He praised Hettie’s musical abilities as well as her personality.

“She was an incredible musician, technically good. She had the ability to sight-read instantly,” he said. “As a person, she was very, very nice, very outgoing, and she got along with people very well.”

Casey said Hettie was the choir accompanist for the late Bob Howell, former choir director for Joliet Township High School District 204. Hettie also helped out at student musical productions for the school district, he added.

In fact, Chuporak said, Hettie taught Jim how to lose his vibrato as he transitioned from ballads to rock.

She turned the duo into a six-member band – Just Us & Company.

“She was a wonderful woman,” Chuporak said. “If she had a gut feeling we should do something, we did it.”

Chuporak said he first met Hettie in 1978 when she provided accompaniment for a summer music program at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Joliet. He called Hettie musically phenomenal and said she became a dear friend, one that played for significant events in his life.

“She was always there for you,” Chuporak said.

JOLIET – Larry Johnson, of the Silver Cross Foundation, is the recipient of the 2015 Marx Gibson Community Leadership Award, given jointly by the University of St. Francis and the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, according to a news release from the university.

The award Larry was presented Johnson Nov. 12 at the chamber’s Community Leadership School graduation dinner.

“Larry represents the very best of what a community-engaged, a community-committed leader can be,” USF President Arvid Johnson said in the release. “He is a role model not only for our CLS participants but also to those of us fortunate enough to be his peers.”

Johnson is the 15th recipient of the award, given in the name of the late newspaperman Marx Gibson, who was dedicated to volunteerism and making a positive difference in the community.

“I am proud to have received recognition from a distinguished university that at its core is committed to the Franciscan spirit of service,” Johnson said in the release.

Johnson of Shorewood is the vice president of the Silver Cross Foundation in New Lenox. Johnson has worked in institutional advancement for over 30 years.

Before his career in advancement began, Johnson was an educator and principal at both the elementary and high school levels.

Johnson is a board member for the FranCenter of Darien, Center for Disability Services and Joliet chamber. He is an Easter Seals and United Way volunteer and has served the Community Leadership School for several years.

Lewis University received a National Science Foundation grant to enhance the preparation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education teachers. The grant will help the school better prepare undergraduate majors in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics to become 6-12th grade mathematics or science teachers.

“Generally speaking there are fewer individuals who are interested in math, technology or the sciences that look to teaching as a possible career choice. The focus on STEM also reflects current trends with the increased emphasis/reliance on technology to support business needs and our daily activities,” said Dr. Dorene Huvaere, Chair and Professor of Secondary Education.

Enrollment in the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program will begin in 2016 with the initial six students. Over a five year period, 36 two-year scholarships will be awarded.

Students will be selected based on current GPA, citizenship status, credit hours in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or

physics, full-time enrollment, application essay and financial application.

The scholars selected will work with a mentor during their coursework and after graduation, participate in and present research and will partner with the community to discover how their research can be applied in the real world. Grant recipients are required to work in high need school districts for four years. The grant will also provide funding for STEM workshops that are open to the public, students at area colleges as well as Lewis University students, said Dr. Huvaere.

DENNIS E. BENNETT Dennis E. Bennett, age 69, a resident of Plainfield, IL since 1977, passed away unexpectedly on November 13, 2015. He was born October 1, 1946, in Rockford, IL. Denny is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan; his devoted daughter, Angela (David) LoConte of Plainfield, IL; his cherished grandchildren, Madalynn and Bennett LoConte; his dear father, Robert E. Bennett of Leaf River, IL; his sisters, Joy (Jon) Wirth of Freeport, IL and Carla (Bradley) Miller of Leaf River, IL; his sisters-in-law, Jean (John) Mrowiec of Winnebago, IL and Jeanette Conkey of Wausaukee, WI; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis James “Jaime” Bennett; his mother, Doris C. Bennett; his parents-in-law, James and Irene Patterson; and his brother-in-law, James (Vicki) Patterson.

He enjoyed a lifelong career in the excavating, heavy equipment and construction industries. In Illinois and elsewhere, tax breaks for companies considering a new location or a move have long been criticized by experts who believe they play little, if any, role in companies’ decision making.

CHAMPAIGN – Gov. Bruce Rauner describes his decision last week to rein in corporate tax breaks as more effective and fair through demanding that recipient companies create jobs rather than merely preserve what they have.

But the new steps, which also include eliminating special tax breaks for big companies with clout, were met by complaints from business advocates that they will limit Illinois’ ability to compete with other states. On the flip side, longtime critics of state corporate tax breaks say Rauner’s approach doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Both camps say it’s time Illinois has a deeper discussion about how it courts businesses and jobs in a climate where the state has a serious shortfall of revenue, companies use the breaks to pit one state against another, and many economists say they don’t work.

The changes would affect any new deals the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity makes in the state’s EDGE program, which stands for Economic Development for a Growing Economy. But Rauner says there will be no new deals before he and lawmakers agree on a long-overdue annual state budget.

If the state no longer can reward job retention, President Todd Maisch says, he’d like talk about potentially deeper changes, “and start from scratch.”

A news release announcing the changes called them “a more fiscally-responsible approach” to agreements under the EDGE program, which has generated substantial controversy in recent years. Here’s a look at that history and Rauner’s changes:

Illinois’ breaks have drawn particular scrutiny in recent years. In 2011, then-Gov. Pat Quinn agreed to hundreds of millions of dollars in special tax breaks for Sears Holdings Corp. and CME Group when the companies threatened to leave the state.

The Chicago Tribune reported recently that in many cases companies given state tax breaks don’t create any new jobs and sometimes cut the total number of employees.

Rauner, a Republican, suspended the EDGE program after taking office. But he delivered nearly $100 million in job-based tax credits to online retailer Amazon when it opened a Joliet warehouse because he said the deal was already in the pipeline. Amazon said it would create 1,000 full-time jobs.

That change is a good one, said Rep. Jack Franks, a Democrat and longtime critic of EDGE credits. “It’s so skewed to the big guys,” he said.

In addition to insisting on job creation rather than reward job retention, the new rules would require that companies add jobs relative to their total number of workers in the state instead of at just one location. Some past deals rewarded companies for adding workers in one location while they cut

elsewhere.

Maisch argues that taking away the retention credits is a mistake, since other states that still do it will have an advantage.

“I do think it weakens our hands,” he said.

Rauner’s changes also prohibit multiple tax credits for the same facility. Without details, they also say the state will focus “on marketing the assets of the state, rather than leading with our incentives.”

Franks is among those who applaud that, believing those assets – and particularly Chicago and its vibrant business community and infrastructure – are actually the biggest reasons many companies move to Illinois.

“They’re relocating because we have a world-class infrastructure,” he said.

ALTERNATIVES?

While fond of some of the Rauner changes, Franks said

they don’t address “the underlying program at all.”

He believes the EDGE program favors big companies far too heavily, something small businesses in the state frequently complain about.

“I think a better approach would be to lower the tax rates on all corporations,” Franks said.

The Illinois Chamber of Commerce wasn’t surprised

by Rauner’s changes since he shared his ideas before he was elected. But Maisch said the organization wants to discuss what to do now that the EDGE program has been blunted.

“There needs to be a bipartisan consensus around what happens when [Wisconsin Gov.] Scott Walker comes to town and really does a good job of convincing an employer from, say, Lake County to come,” Maisch said. “I imagine we’ll be talking with [Rauner’s] office very quickly.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder is criticizing some University of Missouri student protesters as “pampered” and the faculty who are backing them as “tenured radicals.”

The Kansas City Star reported that Kinder discussed the racial discord at the Columbia campus Saturday during a forum for Republican gubernatorial candidates in the Kansas City suburb of Parkville. Kinder said, “Enough is enough is enough of the slander by the tenured radicals in Columbia and those who support them.”

His comments follow the resignations last week of University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe and Columbia Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin after the school’s football team threatened to boycott all football activities until the administrators stepped down.

Scores held as large Seoul rally turns violent

SEOUL, South Korea – Police detained more than 50 protesters and were seeking out others Sunday after violent clashes marred the largest anti-government demonstrations in South Korea’s capital in more than seven years.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons Saturday to disperse about 70,000 people allied with labor, civic and farmers’ groups, who took to the streets to rally against conservative President Park Geun-hye. The activists oppose Park’s business-friendly

labor policies and a decision to require middle and high schools to use only state-issued history textbooks starting in 2017.

Police said they have detained 51 people and could possibly bring in more, including those who they believe might had larger roles in organizing the protests.

Last convict in school bus kidnapping seeks parole

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Three young men from wealthy San Francisco Bay Area families spent more than a year working on their perfect crime.

They converted three prisoner transport vans, built an underground bunker to hold their hostages, even made a lead box to hold the $5 million in ransom they expected to collect to block radio signals if authorities inserted tracking devices.

Then they kidnapped a school bus full of children and buried them under mounds of dirt in a crime that haunts the victims nearly 40 years later.

“They basically stole our whole youth. Our childhood was completely turned upside down,” said Jodi Heffington-Medrano, who was 10 at the time.

Brothers James and Richard Schoenfeld were convicted along with their friend, Frederick Newhall Woods, in the kidnapping, which lasted more than a day before the children were able to dig their way out. Now, only Woods remains behind bars, and he is asking a state parole board to free him.

France bombs Islamic State HQ, hunts attacker who got away

By GREG KELLER and PHILIPPE SOTTO The Associated Press PARIS – France launched “massive” air strikes Sunday night on the Islamic State group’s de-facto capital in Syria, destroying a jihadi training camp and a munitions dump in the city of Raqqa, where Iraqi intelligence officials said the attacks on Paris were planned.

Twelve aircraft including 10 fighter jets dropped a total of 20 bombs in the biggest air strikes since France extended its bombing campaign against the extremist group to Syria in September, a Defense Ministry statement said. The jets launched from sites in Jordan and the Persian Gulf, in coordination with U.S. forces.

Meanwhile, as police announced seven arrests and hunted for more members of the sleeper cell that carried out the Paris attacks that killed 129 people, French officials revealed to The Associated Press that several key suspects had been stopped and released by police after the attack.

The arrest warrant for

Salah Abdeslam, a 26-year-old born in Brussels, calls him very dangerous and warns people not to intervene if they see him.

Yet police already had him in their grasp early Saturday, when they stopped a car carrying three men near the Belgian border. By then, hours had passed since authorities identified Abdeslam as the renter of a Volkswagen Polo that carried hostage takers to the Paris theater where so many died.

Three French police officials and a top French security official confirmed officers let Abdeslam go after checking his ID. They spoke on the condition of anonymity, lacking authorization to publicly disclose such details.

Tantalizing clues about the extent of the plot have emerged from Baghdad, where senior Iraqi officials told the AP that France and other countries had been warned Thursday of an imminent attack.

An Iraqi intelligence dispatch warned that Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had ordered his followers to immediately

launch gun and bomb attacks and take hostages inside the countries of the coalition fighting them in Iraq and Syria.

The Iraqi dispatch, obtained by the AP, provided no details on when or where the attack would take place, and a senior French security official told the AP that French intelligence gets these kinds of warnings “all the time” and “every day.”

However, Iraqi intelligence officials told the AP they also warned France about specific details: Among them, that the attackers were trained for this operation and sent back to France from Raqqa, the Islamic State’s de-facto capital.

The officials also said that a sleeper cell in France then met with the attackers after their training and helped them to execute the plan.

There were 24 people involved in the operation, they said: 19 attackers and five others in charge of logistics and planning.

None of these details have been corroborated by officials of France or other Western intelligence agencies.

Bears still a bit of a puzzle after rout You know, Bears fans, this edition of the Monsters of the Midway is one tough puzzle to solve.

Last week in San Diego, OK; there were clues to see that one coming against the Chargers.

But even after the Bears’ 3713 dismantling of the Rams on Sunday in St. Louis, is there anyone out there who would argue the Rams are the more talented of the two teams?

If you are out there, you’re wasting your breath.

The Rams’ problem is, they’re just not anywhere near

as good a football team as the Bears.

In fact, (and I can’t believe I’m saying this after just writing the other day about the playoffs being a pipedream for the Bears this year) if the Bears can split their next two with the Broncos and the Packers, it’s not hard to imagine these Bears as a 9-7 wild-card team.

Of course, there are a ton of hurdles between here and there, but that it even is a possibility is something that seemed absurd two weeks ago.

Sunday morning started with the news running back Matt Forte, reciever Eddie Royal and linebacker Pernell McPhee all were back in Chicago.

Forte and Royal we saw coming, but without McPhee, how were the Bears going to stop Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley?

The answer was middle linebacker Shea McClellin, playing his best quarter of football as a Bear.

McClellin is a great kid who everybody loves and who has learned how to play every position he’s been tried at.

The problem is, once he got where he was supposed to be, he never has been able to make plays.

The Rams’ first possession was all Gurley, three rushes for 20 yards and a touchdown, and one catch for 31 yards.

Suddenly, on the Rams’ next possession after the Bears

tied it at 7 on a Zach Miller 87yard lightning bolt, there was McClellin meeting Gurley in the hole for a 1-yard gain.

McClellin stopped Gurley for four yards after Rams quarterback Nick Foles converted a third-and-8 with an 8-yard toss to receiver Bradley Marquez.

And on the next play, McClellin met Gurley in the hole with a big hit – the kind we never see from McClellin – to stop Gurley for no gain, and the Rams were forced to punt a play later.

COTTSDALE, Arizona – Sam Travis could have used the Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game as an opportunity to put on a show for the record crowd in attendance or the family and friends watching on MLB Network at home.

Where better than an exhibition game to dip your shoulder and try to hit a baseball as far as you can?

That’s not Sam Travis, however. And that’s not what he did.

Entering in the sixth inning with his East Division team trailing by three runs, the Providence Catholic graduate stepped up to the plate as a pinch-hitter. He took three straight pitches before ultimately taking a walk, staying in his own skin despite the perceived temptation to entertain.

“To be honest with you, I wasn’t trying to show anything,” he said after the game.

“We were down three runs at the time and it was a 3-0 count with no one on base. I was taking 3-0, especially semi-late in the ballgame, sixth inning down three runs, just trying to get something going.

“I’m not here trying to be someone I’m not, trying to prove to people I’m something that I’m not. Just go out, be yourself and have fun.”

It seems simple, but it’s important because from now until the end of Travis’ career, he will be compared to people he’s not.

It will start with Kyle Schwarber, and that might never end. Schwarber, the power-hitting outfielder/ catcher who is part of a young Cubs core taking baseball by storm, was a teammate of Travis at Indiana. The two were in the same freshman class

Travis used to worry about those kinds of things. He would have been bothered by naysayers. Then he turned 8.

“It all started with my dad,” he said of developing his mindset. “He’s been working with me since I can remember. When I was little I used to be scared of the ball. My dad put me into wrestling and since then I’ve started performing. It toughened me up.

“I hated it then, but I appreciate it now, that’s for sure.”

The touchdown, one of two 80-plus-yard scores on the day for the Bears, came against a Rams defense that was fifth in the league overall and sixth in scoring defense heading into the game. Once again, Bears of-

fensive coordinator Adam Gase had a game plan that gave an undermanned Bears offense the edge.

Reciever Eddie Royal and running back Matt Forte didn’t make the trip to St. Louis. Receiver Alshon Jeffery, limited by a groin injury, had only three catches, the same amount of receptions as tight end Martellus Bennett, but the Bears

in the game to help ice the victory.

“When I heard the call and we saw the look, I did my job and executed,” offensive lineman Charles Leno said. “That’s just a credit from the top, to the guys calling the plays, to the guys making the plays.”

“Third-and-10 and he checks to the run? I love that,” Slauson said. “That’s awesome.”

Slauson said Gase had “all the confidence in the world in us that our physicality was going to prevail.” The Rams had the speed, but the Bears’ front created lanes to run for 153 yards and held the Rams to two sacks on the afternoon.

“We knew we were going to need to run the ball consistently and efficiently to be able to compete with these guys,” Cutler said. “We just got some big plays. Guys on the outside were making some plays. The offensive line blocking the front and blocking downfield made my life easy.”

The Bears were then forced to punt after a seven-play drive netted only 30 yards.

But on the Rams’ first play at their own 16 with 1:01 left

in the first quarter, McClellin met running back Tre Mason in the hole with another big hit for no gain, ripped the ball out of Mason’s hands and recovered it himself.

The Bears never looked back from there.

McClellin went back to being the old Shea after that, managing only three stops the rest of the afternoon.

But the Rams inexplicably abandoned Gurley, giving him

only five more carries – for 19 yards and two more passes for 13 yards in the last three quarters, essentially handing the Bears an easy win.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, running back Jeremy Langford and tight end Zach Miller all were outstanding on offense again and a big part of the story.

But on defense, the only Bear besides McClellin who flashed consistently was Tracy

Porter again, and, yet, somehow the Bears won in a rout.

Really bad Rams? Very good Bears? You tell me?

This much was clear: The Bears were an extremely wellcoached team with an excellent plan that they executed to perfection.

In spite of the legend of ex-Bear Jeff Fischer, the Rams were really poorly coached, didn’t appear to have a plan, and if they did, they couldn’t

have executed it any worse.

Is that enough to predict more good things for these Bears?

I have no idea, but I do know it makes chapter 10 next week against Denver a whole lot more fun to look forward to.

ST. LOUIS – When Bears offensive lineman Matt Slauson turned to make his block on a screen pass to running back Jeremy Langford, he didn’t see any Rams players at first.

“It was like a ghost down over there, and I’ve got to find something,” he said.

Slauson found someone – Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson, coming full speed for Langford. Slauson’s cut block helped spring Langford for an 83-yard touchdown to put the Bears up 24-10 en route to a convincing 37-13 victory Sunday.

“It was a little unconventional setup because when I turned for my release, there was nobody out there, so I’m trying to find work,” Slauson said. “I just happened to look over my right shoulder and saw 22 coming across. I’m like, ‘Man, this is the only guy, I have to make it happen.’

Jackson resigns as Plainfield Central coach

John Jackson, who was named football coach at Plainfield High School in 1997, has resigned his position as head coach at Plainfield Central.

To put Jackson’s tenure into perspective, Dan Sharp’s first season as Joliet Catholic’s coach also was 1997. Among all Joliet-area schools, Wilmington coach Jeff Reents has had the longest tenure, having debuted in 1994.

A couple of years after Jackson’s arrival at Plainfield, his Wildcats began a run of four straight playoff appearances.

That included the 2000 team, which went 11-1 and reached the state quarterfinals. In all, Jackson coached seven playoff qualifiers, the

most recent in 2012, and won Southwest Prairie Conference titles in 2000, 2001 and 2007.

Plainfield and Plainfield Central won 85 games in 19 years under Jackson’s tutelage, but in recent years, the victories have disappeared.

The Wildcats have gone 0-9 the past three seasons and have dropped 29 straight games in all.

“The last couple of years have not been up to snuff, but we have had some good success,” Jackson said. “The big thing I will remember is that during my tenure we had great kids who wanted to work hard. Even in the tough years, they gave their all. Maybe they lacked a little talent and lacked luck.

“The real memories, though, come when you see the young men in their 30s and 40s and they see you and still call you ‘Coach.’ It’s still like yesterday. You form

In his 32 years of coaching, including stints as an assistant under Larry McKeon at Naperville North and as head coach at Collinsville, Jackson coached 34 Division I players, 22 all-staters and three professional players.

He recalled many of the outstanding players he coached at Plainfield – Jordan Ellingwood, Bryce Douglas, Perry Dorrestein, Jake Shields, Sean Carlson, Tom Knapczyk and Tim Blake, to name a few.

“They all played hard, the way I played the game,” Jackson said. “Every coach wants to be able to say that.”

Jackson, 55, who teaches five history classes a day and has done that for his entire Plainfield career, said he will continue teaching at Plainfield Central for at least two

or three more years.

He also will continue to perform his duties as a trustee with the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association. He was president of the IHSFCA in 2004.

“Whether I coach again or not, it’s too early to tell,” Jackson said. “I have good friends in coaching who have reached out to me. Fifteen or 20 years ago, I thought I might want to be a college line coach. I’ve thought about doing that in retirement.

“Deep down, I am a football player and coach. It’s what I’m good at. Going out with the losses we have had does not sit well. We’ve been well ahead with the ‘W’ column over the years.”

If Jackson does return to coaching in some manner, he said he prefers not to coach in the Southwest Prairie, where he has close associations with so many coaches.

“I’m still relatively young

as coaches go. Maybe I’ll get involved with a youth program,” he said.

Plainfield Central athletic director Dave Stephens said the school “would like to recognize coach John Jackson for 19 years of dedicated service to its football program.”

He said the opening has been posted.

St. Francis football’s hopes dashed despite jump in final poll SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – When the University of St Francis football team exited Joliet Memorial Stadium after blanking Olivet Nazarene, 40-0, Saturday afternoon, the Saints were hoping that victory and the Robert Morris loss to St. Ambrose might help propel them into the NAIA playoffs.

It did not happen, however.

The NAIA announced the 16-team field Sunday afternoon and USF (8-3) was not among the qualifiers. The Saints finished tied for 18th in the final poll. Ten NAIA conference champions that were ranked in the top 20 received automatic berths. The other six spots went to the highest-ranked teams that are not conference champions.

Saint Xavier and St. Francis tied for the MSFA Midwest title, but 16th-ranked Saint Xavier won the head-to-head matchup and was designated the conference champ for playoff purposes. For what it’s

worth, USF made the largest jump from the previous week’s poll, climbing from the 22th spot to a tie for 18th, but still came up short.

The lowest-ranked at-large qualifier was No. 13 Lindsey Wilson (Kentucky) as No. 14 Dakota Wesleyan and No. 15 Montana Western did not get in. USF finished tied in the final poll with Dickinson State, which is in as a conference champ.

At the bridge table, sometimes you need to give your opponents their just des(s)erts earlier rather than later. In this deal, how can South make four spades after ruffing West’s opening lead of the club ace?

The auction could have gone many ways. And if the vulnerability had been different, surely East-West would have gone on to five clubs, which would probably have failed by one trick. (Note that North would have done best to lead a trump, trying to cut down the other side’s ruffs.)

First, South realizes that if trumps are 4-1 or 5-0, he has no chance.

Second, he sees that he needs to establish his diamond suit; but he knows from the auction that the suit is splitting 5-0.

How can he keep trump control and set up the diamonds?

If you need to gain tricks from a side suit, it is usually right to play on that suit first, and this deal is no exception. But as South knows East is void, he must lead a low diamond at trick two.

East ruffs and returns a club, but South trumps that, ruffs a diamond high in the dummy, draws trumps ending in his hand, cashes the diamond ace, and leads the diamond jack. Declarer loses only one diamond, one diamond ruff and the heart ace.

Finally, note that if West had started with three trumps and at least four clubs, the contract was unmakable.

This increased number of “angry” T cells are then returned to the cancer patient’s body, where they travel to the tumor and attack it.

In other words, doctors create a strengthened army of a cancer patient’s own cells in the laboratory, put them back into the body and send them into battle. This approach has been most effective against melanoma.

• CAR Cells and TCR Cells: Creating Lymphocyte Attackers. Doctors begin with a cancer patient’s own T cells and modify them by inserting an element into them. That element recognizes and attaches to the patient’s tumor cells and causes the T cells to attack the cancer cells. Large numbers of these cells are grown in the laboratory.

The element inserted into T cells to create CAR cells does not occur in nature. In contrast, a cancer patient does naturally make a few TCR cells – just not enough to stop the cancer. These few cells are removed from the body and made to multiply in the laboratory.

Then the very large numbers of either CAR or TCR cells that have been grown in the laboratory are returned to the cancer patient’s body to battle the tumor.

These new approaches are in their infancy and don’t yet work for many cancers.

They also can produce severe side effects. But some people who had no hope left have been given a new lease on life.

Dear Dr. K: I hear that doctors are trying to boost the immune system to help people fight cancer. Does that actually work?

Dear Reader: Yes, this old, simple idea is beginning to work. The job of the immune system is to recognize when “foreign” things (such as microbes or chemicals) enter our bodies and eliminate them.

Cancerous cells make substances that look foreign to the immune system. So, a person’s immune system should be an ally in fighting cancer.

The problem is that in most people with cancer, the immune system response is just not strong enough to do much good.

So medical scientists have been trying to boost the immune system’s response. There are several different approaches: • Checkpoint-Inhibitor Therapy: Unleashing the Immune Attack. When a cancer starts, immune system cells called T cells are naturally activated to attack it. However, the T cells then paradoxically produce “checkpoint” molecules that stop the T-cell attack. Scientists have created treatments called monoclonal antibodies that attach to and disable the checkpoint molecules.

This unleashes the T-cell attack on the tumor.

This approach is showing real promise in several different types of cancer: melanoma, kidney cancer, one type of lung cancer, bladder cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma and certain types of colon cancers.

Former President Jimmy Carter recently announced that one of these drugs will be used to slow the growth of the melanoma that has spread to his brain.

• Adoptive Cell Transfer: Finding and Boosting “Natural” Lymphocyte Attackers. When doctors remove a primary tumor, they often also find small numbers of T cells that are trying to attack the tumor cells. These few T cells can be greatly multiplied in number, and stimulated by
