NEW LENOX — Lincoln-Way High School District 210 board members approved two accounting firms to perform two separate audits, a decision that comes after thousands of residents petitioned for the district to examine its finances.

Board members at Thursday’s meeting unanimously approved Wermer, Rogers, Doran and Ruzon and Crowe Horwath to perform two separate audits.

WRDR will perform auditing services of the school’s finances for fiscal years 2016 through 2018 for an amount not to exceed $80,580. Crowe Horwath will perform a forensic audit examining the use of building bonds proceeds since 2006 in an amount not to exceed $14,500.

Residents have criticized the district’s financial practices after the board in August voted to shut down North high school in an effort to reduce crippling budget deficits.

Resident Lee Talley said at Thursday’s meeting the audit proposals the board planned to approve were not good enough.

“We want a total forensic audit of the budget,” he said.

When asked about the previous auditors Mulcahy, Pauritsch, Salvador & Co. – whom were criticized by board member Christopher McFadden – Tingley said district officials were going with WRDR. “It’s just best practice,” he said.

Interim business consultant Steven Langert said WRDR is auditing two neighboring districts and has audited other districts in the past. He also said Crowe Horwath is doing the same audit planned for Lincoln-Way for another school district.

For the audit of building bond proceeds, Tingley told board members that district officials were “going to see what the numbers show.”

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A new American Red Cross chapter that includes Will, Grundy and Kendall counties is being formed.

Organizers met Thursday at the Joliet home of Jay Bergman, a member of the board of the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois.

Bergman said the six-county chapter is being formed to create a more-efficient operation.

“The more efficiently the Red Cross runs, the less they have to spend on overhead, and the more they have to spend on programs,” he said at the start of a meeting in which community leaders gathered to discuss ideas for the new organization.

Other counties in the chapter are Kankakee, LaSalle and Putnam.

Will and Grundy counties currently are part of a regional Red Cross chapter based in Chicago.

Ken Cozzi, executive director for the new chapter, said one of his goals is to develop relationships in the communities in the six counties.

“I’m looking to build relationships in the communities so when there is a disaster, they know who to go to,” Cozzi said.

He said the Red Cross provided disaster relief to 2,444 people in the six counties between July 2014 and July 2015.

In Will County alone, the Red Cross responded to 45 home fires in the past year.

But Cozzi said he believes the Red Cross can help more people if first responders know whom to call when there is a fire.

Bergman said the chapter will become official later this month.

Some board members already named for the new chapter include Brother James Gaffney, president of Lewis University; Arvid Johnson, president of University of St. Francis; and Kathleen Rhine, chief executive of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Bergman said he has found board members from Will County, but the chapter needs board members from the other five counties.

Another early goal is to find a headquarters for the chapter.

Bergman said the Red Cross is looking for a location with low rent, parking for its vehicles and access to Interstates 55 or 80. The chapter will have a staff of four people.

He said WRDR will work with Langert, whose hiring was approved by board members in September to review daily operations and program spending.

“They’ll have access to everything [Langert] is going through,” he said.

College students gaining real-world experience as they forge partnerships with community

By LAUREN LEONE-CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – A Habitat for Humanity home’s unfinished basement isn’t a typical classroom setting.

But it was Thursday for Clint Engle, 39, of Plainfield, and five other Joliet Junior College students enrolled in the college’s heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system program.

Textbooks were traded for tools as students helped install components of an HVAC system.

Sure, it’s a classroom assignment.

But it’s also a prime example of how community colleges are finding new ways to forge partnerships with nonprofits and businesses in the community to solve real-world problems.

“The greatest thing about all of this is that we’re able to help an unfortunate family by getting them into a home before Christmas. On the back end of that, we’re gaining real-world experience,” Engle said.

The problem

Before the housing bubble burst, construction companies’ willingness to donate time and energy into building homes for Will County Habitat for Humanity was commonplace, said the nonprofit’s project manager, Kirk Wilkins.

That all changed when the economy tanked, and home builders had to shift their sights to contractor jobs that paid well, he said.

“When times got bad, even the donation of time went away,” Wilkins said.

Thankfully, someone else stepped in.

Joe Thomas, associate professor and adviser at JJC, forged a partnership with Habitat for Humanity 12 years ago by requiring students enrolled in his HVAC classes to install heating and air-conditioning systems for homes built by Habitat for Humanity.

“The experience is worth its weight in gold,” Thomas said. “The students love it.”

The benefits

Having students install HVAC and ductwork has saved Habitat for Humanity $8,000 to $12,000 a home, Wilkins said.

When students assist with wir-

ing a home – which happens frequently, he said – another $9,000 is saved.

JJC students have had a hand in building about 30 homes, meaning they have saved Habitat for Humanity at least $510,000 during a 10-year period, Wilkins said.

Equally important to the savings is the reliability, he said.

“The most valuable part about this, other than the work that they give us, is the fact they gives us a steady person that we can count on to do the work. Rialto Theatre getting extra attention

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hundreds of potential extras interviewed Thursday for a chance to appear in an episode of the Fox TV series “Empire,” which is being filmed next week at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

The drama series about a hip-hop music company named Empire Entertainment will use the theater that locals call the “Jewel of Joliet” for a concert scene. The filming is scheduled for Wednesday.

“We’ll use as many as 1,500 [extras] on Wednesday,” said Jess Gisin, co-owner of 4 Star Casting of Chicago, the company that interviewed the prospects.

She said people who just show up Wednesday will have a chance to be in the scene, too.

The interviews took place at the Rialto, which likely will be shown in some detail in the episode, scheduled to appear sometime in the spring, Gisin said.

“They’ll feature a lot of its beauty,” Gisin said. “They tend to do that. That’s why they pick locations.”

only local landmark in “Empire.” Two weeks ago, film crews were at the old Joliet prison on Collins Street to film an episode that Gisin said will be the fall finale for “Empire” in December.

Much of “Empire” is filmed in Chicago, and a lot of the casting for extras is done there. Gisin said 4 Star Casting came to Joliet to look for local extras for the Rialto scene.

Filming TV or movie scenes in Joliet is uncommon,

but not unprecedented.

Darnell F. Jackson Jr. of Joliet, who interviewed with 4 Star Casting, said he got a speaking role in another Fox TV series, “Prison Break,” when it was filmed at the prison.

Being an extra is not glamorous work, Jackson said, but it’s a chance to be in show business on a professional set.

“You stand a lot – 10 to 12 hours a day,” he said. “But they pay you a pretty good check. They feed you. You

meet some top people.”

The 4 Star Casting crew in Joliet emphasized the long hours and standing around when interviewing for extras.

“Extra work is hard work,” Gisin said. “A lot of people don’t realize that. It’s long hours.”

First-timers are told to bring a book or something else to occupy them for the long waits in-between action.

Extras do have a chance to get speaking roles, Stewart said. But, she added, it’s “atypical.” Many professional extras love to see themselves in the movies even if it’s just a single frame, she said.

“It depends on the scene,” said Anajiyyah Khalilallah of Normal, who has performed as an extra before in “Empire” and was in Joliet for an interview. “It can be a crowd scene, and all you see is the top of your head.”

Most of those who came Thursday were from Joliet and the immediate area.

They included Kendall Jackson of Joliet.

“My boyfriend was an extra,” Jackson said. “I think I’ll give it a try.”

Joliet Junior College working to fill leadership posts

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College officials are working on filling several leadership positions after some resignations and a retirement this year.

So far, college officials brought on a new dean of enrollment management, Trevell Eddins, who started Monday and replaces Susan Paddock, JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said. Paddock retired this year.

Board trustees approved Caroline Portlock – former Grundy County Chamber of

Commerce executive director – as the new workforce development director in August after Paige Vanderhyden resigned in June.

College officials still are working to fill the positions of financial aid director, dean of student success and vice president of academic affairs.

The financial aid director position became vacant after David Seward resigned in June. Rohder said in an email the interview process is in progress and the expected hire date is early next semester.

Brooks was appointed to the position of interim student development vice president.

Brooks filled a role previously occupied by Yolanda Isaacs, who served as interim vice president of academic affairs once that position became vacant in May after Donna Stewart resigned.

In August, Brooks left JJC to work for Oakton Community College.

Peg Bourdreau has served as vice president of academic affairs since mid-August and will continue to be in the position until Dec. 11, Rohder said in an email. Isaacs returned

to her role as vice president of student development.

“The [vice president of academic affairs] search committee in August decided that after reviewing applicant materials and conducting video interviews with a selection of applicants, that we should re-advertise the position to broaden the applicant pool,” Rohder said in an email.

The position was advertised again in August and closed Sept. 11, she said. The anticipated hire date is January.

After Stewart resigned to return to the College of DuPage, some board trustees discussed

organizing a committee for exit interviews to get information on “what things are going well and things that need to be changed,” former Board Chairman Jeff May said at the time.

Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich said trustees Michael O’Connell and Maureen Broderick did exit interviews earlier this year.

He said trustees will consider at their next workshop meeting having a survey at JJC on its climate by either the Association of Community College Trustees or a local law firm.

High winds blow through Will-Grundy-Kendall area Minor storm damage seen across region

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Some power lines, tree branches, yard decorations and pool covers suffered the brunt of the damage from high winds Wednesday night and Thursday morning in the Will County area.

“There were no significant calls for service,” Joliet Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said. “We had to stand by for a few power lines down, but there seemed to be less than the usual amount after a storm.”

Phillip Arnold also said one power line went down overnight, but the weather did not cause any public safety issues.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said the winds did not have an effect on Thursday morning’s commute in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties.

“Looks like everybody was aware of the wind and drove cautiously,” he said.

The move to include new construction in the levy equation won by an 11-9 vote, with some board members arguing the rate still is lower than last year’s and that the district has been a great steward of taxpayers’ dollars and could benefit from additional revenue.

“Those who want to pounce on this, you want to punish the unit of government that’s been the most responsible. ... This district has bit the bullet the last seven years. Not the last seven minutes or the last seven months,” said board commissioner Jim Moustis, referring to the board’s ability to hold the line on property taxes the past several years.

Board commissioner Bob Howard, D-Beecher, said he voted no because constituents he’s met want their property taxes to stay the same or go down.

Voting to add new construction into the mix is not a guarantee a homeowner’s tax bill won’t go up, he said.

“The reason I say this is because I’m meeting with a lot of residents, and they want that simple answer, and we can’t provide that simple answer,” Howard said. “As a commissioner, when I vote on this thing, if I can’t tell [a constituent] your property tax isn’t going to stay the same or be reduced ... then I’m a ‘no.’”

Moustis and others argued there’s never a guarantee, but the board has no control over a person’s home value – only the tax rate.

Overall property values in the county are up 2.8 percent.

Lockport Township saw the highest growth in assessed value, at 4.5 percent; others, including Crete and Reed townships, have seen declines.

Dean Olson Head of Will County’s Resource Recovery & Energy Division take a hit, Land Use Director Curt Paddock said Thursday, adding that residents’ hazardous materials will “end up in landfills or unsanctioned dumps.”

“I don’t think [the County Board] thought this through,” Paddock said.

Bruce Friefeld, chief of staff for the County Board, said the Land Use Department can “always come before the board” to request additional funding for projects, such as recycling events.

“Everybody says [they need more funding],” Friefeld said.

“If they plan, they’ll have the money for the recycling program. If something comes up, the solid waste fund will still be there. Just like the capital fund, the monies can be transferred as necessary,” Friefeld said.

Friefeld argued the Land Use Department does not need $350,000 for its programs, not-

ing how the department has spent $163,000 on its recycling program so far in 2015, compared to $192,000 in 2014, and $159,000 in 2013.

Olson said he requested additional funds because recycling costs are on the rise.

He said board members did not discuss budget changes with him before presenting the revised spending plan in early November.

“The problem is that they never had a conversation with me,” Olson said. “If they would have called and asked, ‘Dean, why do you need $350,000?’ I could have told them.”

The cost to host collection events has increased from $21,075 in 2011 to $37,979 in 2015, according to Olson.

Fewer events were held in 2015 than 2014, but more participants attended and more poundage was accepted at each event, he said.

Earlier this month, it was suggested that cities and townships could pick up the slack.

However, Olson said municipalities can’t afford it, noting how Naperville’s electronics recycling program was suspended earlier this year because demand was overwhelming.

Olson said the county’s solid waste plan requires officials to increase recycling efforts, but he needs funding to make that happen.

A final vote is expected next week on the county’s 2016 budget.

JOLIET – Will County Land Use Department heads are worried they won’t have enough money to meet increased demand for the department’s popular recycling program on which “thousands of residents” rely.

The Will County Board’s latest budget revision provides $200,000 for the program – $150,000 less than what was requested by Dean Olson, who heads up the department’s Resource Recovery & Energy Division.

Another $7,000 in cuts has been proposed for the department’s $10,000 budget for the printing of promotional materials.

Olson said events such as Recyclepalooza, held in the spring at Joliet Junior College, are growing in popularity.

This year, more than 1,000 people dropped off old electronics and hazardous materials, up from about 700 the year before.

That event alone cost about $70,000, Olson said, and the cost of maintaining recycling drop-off locations has doubled this year to $50,000.

“I could understand it if we were getting less people and the programs weren’t successful; but as more people show up, the costs to run these events go up,” Olson said.

Morning blaze damages home in New Lenox The HERALD–NEWS NEW LENOX – No one was injured early Thursday morning when a fire caused heavy damage to a single-story home in New Lenox.

Firefighters were called about 3 a.m. to the 200 block of Forest View Drive, where they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the home’s garage, New Lenox Fire Public Information Officer Marisa Schrieber said in a statement.

“The fire was [put] out in approximately one hour,” Schrieber said. “Two people were in the residence but were able to get out safely.”

Several other departments assisted New Lenox in fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

WILMINGTON – Police said two young men broke into a neighbor’s house in Wilmington in September to steal a cellphone, $50 in cash and a cooler with two cans of beer, and ate a plate of Italian sausage.

Matthew R. Garrelts, 19, of the 400 block of North Lincoln Street in Braidwood, was arrested Nov. 5, and Donald W. Denning, 21, of the 500 block of Railroad Street in Wilmington, was taken into custody Wednesday, according to Wilmington Police Chief Phillip Arnold. Both men were being held in the Will County Jail on charges of residential burglary and criminal trespassing.

Arnold said patrol officers were investigating a report of

suspicious activity at a parking lot Sept. 21 and arrived to find Garrelts and another man.

“Garrelts had a cellphone with him and didn’t know the number or make of the phone, which officers found suspicious,” Arnold said. “It Matthew R. turned out the Garrelts phone had been stolen from a resident in the 500 block of Railroad Street.”

The victim first believed the phone had been taken from his car but discovered other items missing that had been inside the house, Arnold said. The investigation pointed to Garrelts and his friend, Denning, who lives near the victim. Arnold said it took

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Those unique double-striped markings that have been required for parking spaces throughout Shorewood will become single-striped after the village board voted Tuesday to remove the mandate.

Village staff reported that the double-striping standard, which originally was intended to increase distance between cars in a parking lot by encouraging motorists to park in the center of the stall, wasn’t notably accomplishing the goal and was a burden to landlords and businesses.

“The doubles did not seem to be helping keep cars centered in the stalls,” Trustee Dan Brockman said, adding the double-striping doubled the costs of repainting for landlords and business owners.

Community Development Director Karen James said e n f o r c e m e n t o f t h e d o uble-striping ordinance has been an issue since the rule went into effect in 2008.

“Over the last year, year and a half, we’ve analyzed it,” James said. “We do know [property owners] out there are putting off maintenance, including a couple shopping centers.”

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow and Prairie State Legal Services Attorney Mona Elgindy will talk

about legal issues that can affect the elderly.

Elgindy will discuss issues that involve granting people power of attorney to make financial or health care decisions for others should they become incapacitated or unable to make decisions on their own.

Glasgow will discuss what can occur when criminals obtain power of attorney and

use the accounts of trusting senior citizens for their own financial gain. He also will outline how seniors can protect themselves in these situations.

The presentation is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at Senior Services Center of Will County, 251 N. Center St., Joliet.

Oak Lawn man charged in 2014 Homer Glen burglary

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – Police said DNA evidence has linked an Oak Lawn man to a breakin last year at a Homer Glen home.

On Dec. 4, 2014, Will County Sheriff’s police were called to a burglary in the 12000 block of Mackinac Drive, spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said. Two pillowcases had been taken from a bed, Hoffmeyer said, but one was found on the deck filled with various items from the residence.

“The other was still gone along with cash and jewelry that had been in a safe,” Hoffmeyer said.

Police also found a crowbar at the scene and were able to recover a DNA profile from the bar, according to Hoffmeyer.

The profile was sent to crimiJason J. nal databases Gutson and allegedly matched Jason J. Gutson, 38.

Police were given search warrants, and residue on the

tire iron from Gutson’s car matched fireproofing material from the Homer Glen residence, Hoffmeyer said.

“Investigators obtained a DNA sample from Gutson, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on Oct. 2,” Hoffmeyer said.

On Wednesday, police were able to locate Gutson and arrest him, Hoffmeyer said.

Gutson, of the 8900 block of Austin Avenue in Oak Lawn, was booked into the Will County jail on a charge of residential burglary and was being held on $100,000 bond.

The problem

Nearly two years ago, Providence Catholic High School officials realized the cost of running the school’s bus transportation system was getting to be too much.

Overtime costs – coupled with rising fuel and maintenance costs – were adding up, said Sharon Oddo, controller for the New Lenox school.

At first, school officials considered two obvious choices: outsource the transportation system or pay a high-priced consultant to determine potential cost savings.

But neither option was ideal, Oddo said.

The solution

That’s when Steve Morrissette, a Providence Catholic board member and associate professor in the College of Business and Health Administration at University of St. Francis, stepped in.

He suggested two of his students – Susana Pierson and Kate McIlvanie – team up and research busing best practices, obtain vendor quotes for

outsourcing and in-house charter buses, and recommend creative solutions.

After months of research, Pierson and McIlvanie made recommendations.

They suggested having coaches drive shorter buses for sports team trips and other school-related events, eliminating overtime by spreading routes more evenly among employees, and cutting back the number of full-time bus drivers.

They also recommended the use of cluster stops – or picking children up at a single location instead of stopping at each home.

“Before this, I had only rode a bus before. It was a neat experience, learning about all the work that goes into busing systems,” Pierson said.

The benefits

A year later, Providence

Catholic is reaping the benefits. Having coaches, instead of bus drivers, drive shorter buses to sporting events saved the school about $25,000 in the first year, Oddo said.

The elimination of overtime led to $72,800 in savings.

Reducing the fleet, using white buses, making cluster stops and cutting back on outside charter buses saved the school about $63,400 in fuel costs, she said.

Taking income reductions into account, the students saved the school about $154,000 in expenses, Oddo said.

Oddo said she’s grateful for the hard work Pierson and McIlvanie put into the project, noting how the school didn’t have the resources to hire a consultant or staff time to delve into data.

“It was a great experience,” Oddo said.

Illinois Lottery ticket sales plunge after payout delay

CHICAGO – Illinois Lottery ticket sales have plummeted since lottery officials announced delaying payouts of more than $600 because of the state budget impasse.

Data obtained by The Associated Press through a public information request show gross sales in October were the lowest yet in 2015. Sales include instant and Powerball tickets.

The lottery announced in mid-October that anyone winning more than $600 wouldn’t get their money right away because money used to pay those winnings was running out.

That followed a late August announcement that payouts more than $25,000 would be delayed because there wasn’t authority to cut checks that big.

Lottery spokesman Steve Rossi said the impasse affects the lottery’s ability to pay. Some winners already have sued.

U of Illinois votes on deal with professor over job offer

CHICAGO – The University of Illinois would pay a professor who lost his job offer over a series of anti-Israel tweets $600,000 plus legal costs under a proposed agreement.

The university released the terms of the proposed deal with Steven Salaita Thursday, and its trustees are expected to vote on the deal in Chicago.

According to the university, the agreement would settle Salaita’s lawsuit against the university. The school would admit no wrongdoing and Salaita would not be hired.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration tapped millions of dollars from a small state agency Thursday to pay vendors amid the budget crisis.

The Chicago Tribune said the Illinois Finance Authority board voted to take $12 million from the $17 million it has in the bank to pay vendors as early as Friday.

The agency usually arranges loans for hospitals, municipal-

ities and farms. Its revenue comes from fees hospitals pay to issue bonds at the state level.

The board also discussed borrowing up to $115 million through bond sales for further payments to vendors.

The state is more than four months into its fiscal year without a budget in place.

Bill aimed at Illinois State Museum reopening reviewed

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration is reviewing a bill aimed at reopening the Illinois State Museum after the first-term Republican ordered the closure to save money during the budget impasse.

Lawmakers approved the bill with bipartisan support this week. It requires Illinois to keep open the museum and satellite

locations, including Dickson Mounds, Lockport and the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said it’s under review.

Museum doors have been closed to the public since Oct. 1. However, workers remain on the payroll with a pending legal challenge to the closure in the courts. The closure has put the museum’s national accreditation at risk.

Owner of L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune eyes 7% cut in jobs

The owner of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and other newspapers says it expects a buyout offer to cut its staff by 7 percent.

Tribune Publishing employees had to apply by Oct. 23.

The company said in October that layoffs could follow the buyouts. Spokeswoman Dana Meyer said Thursday that CEO Jack Griffin had said last week on the company earnings call that “initial results indicate that the company will reach its internal targets” for buyouts.

Meyer declined to comment on how many employees took a buyout or how many employees Tribune Publishing has. As of the end of 2014, it had 7,595 full- and part-time employees.

Revenues have been declining as newspaper readers and advertisers move online.

Chicago-based Tribune Publishing Co. owns 11 major daily newspapers.

Shares slipped 7 cents to $9.13 in midday trading Thursday.

Obama awards Medal of Honor to Army captain KEVIN FREKING The Associated Press WASHINGTON – An Army captain who shoved a suicide bomber to the ground and away from his security detail became the nation’s newest Medal of Honor recipient Thursday as President Barack Obama credited his actions with preventing a greater catastrophe from occurring.

Florent Groberg, 32, is the 10th living service member awarded the nation’s highest honor for battlefield bravery in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Four people were killed in the attack, and several others were wounded. As families of the victims and some of his former Army colleagues watched, Obama draped the medal around Groberg’s neck at a White House ceremony. Groberg fought to keep his emotions in check as he faced the crowd and cameras. Afterward, he dedicated the medal to those killed and their families, saying they were the true heroes.

“I am blessed and just

grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve my country,” Groberg said.

Obama recounted the details of the August 2012 attack, which left Groberg badly wounded and requiring nearly three years of recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Groberg was helping lead a military escort in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province when his unit approached a bridge.

As two motorcyclists caused a diversion, a man dressed in dark clothing spun toward him some 10 feet away.

Groberg grabbed the bomber by the vest and kept pushing him backward, with help from fellow soldier, Sgt. Andrew Mahoney. The attacker fell to ground and the bomb detonated. That explosion also caused a second, unseen bomb to detonate before it could be placed closer to the unit.

“Had both bombs gone off as planned, who knows how many could have been killed?” Obama said.

Groberg suffered significant nerve damage and about

half the calf muscle in his left leg was blown off. He needed 33 surgeries to save his leg.

Obama said he had met Groberg about three years ago at Walter Reed. Obama recalled that Groberg likes the Chicago Bears, “so I liked him right away.”

The Medal of Honor ceremony was somber, but Obama also recounted how Groberg first came to consciousness after the bombing. He thought he was in Germany and that the lead singer from the heavy metal band Korn was at his bedside and talking to him, Obama said.

“Flo thought, ‘What’s going on? Am I hallucinating?’ ” Obama said. “But he wasn’t.

It was all real. And so, today, Flo, I want to assure you you are not hallucinating. You are actually in the White House. Those cameras are on. I am not the lead singer from Korn,” Obama joked.

Born in Poissy, France, Groberg became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2001, the same year he graduated from high school in Maryland.

Local, state government have accountability crisis SPRINGFIELD – I couldn’t help but shake my head when I read the latest about police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz.

He was the Fox Lake cop who apparently tried to make his own suicide look like a heroic line-of-duty death.

Investigators now say he was stealing from the Explorer Post the department operated. Text messages sent by Gliniewicz before his suicide indicate he was terrified of being found out.

When I first read of the findings, I just leaned back and waited.

A cascade of problems inevitably was going to pour out of his personnel file.

And that cascade soon followed.

And, no, I’m not psychic.

I’ve covered government for nearly 30 years. I’ve seen this play acted out before.

A problem employee finally does something that can’t be

Administrators, co-workers and just about everyone else scuttles around covering their butts and saying, “He never really was all that good of an employee, anyway.”

These problem employees come in all shapes and sizes.

Sometimes it’s a cop. Other times, it’s a teacher. And still other times, it’s some person stuck away in an anonymous post in the bureaucracy doing nothing but causing problems.

Let’s face it, we have an accountability crisis in local and state government.

Look no further than the Gliniewicz case.

During his long and disreputable career, he was suspended

no fewer than five times for violating 10 department policies.

Some of the violations were relatively “minor,” like calling in sick when he really wasn’t.

I hate to break it to the workplace scofflaws out there, but folks who do this are liars and thieves.

They not only lied to their supervisor but stole from their employer. And, in Gliniewicz’s case, that’s the taxpayers.

Isn’t it reassuring to know that someone who was stealing from us was also entrusted with enforcing the law?

Of course, that violation is picayune compared to some of the others.

According to The Associated Press, Gliniewicz was punished for threatening a colleague. In another violation, he was found passed out in the driver’s seat of his personal vehicle, “with the engine running full throttle with his foot on the gas.” In a third case, commanders

accused him of leaving a crime scene unattended.

How does someone with a work record like this not only hang on to their job but move ahead?

Gliniewicz was a lieutenant.

He was a leader – but also it turns out a liar, a thief, a bully and a coward.

Talk about mucking up and moving up.

It’s hard to fire a government worker. Really hard.

It’s even harder to fire a unionized government worker.

About a decade ago, I looked at how much it costs local Illinois school districts in legal fees to fire a tenured teacher.

The number exceeded $219,000.

I don’t believe it’s gotten cheaper since.

Government labor unions will tell you they don’t protect problem workers, they just advocate for the employees “due process” rights.

Baloney.

Do you really think workers sit around in the breakroom and say, “I sure hope Sally’s due process rights are protected?” Nah, they say, “I sure hope she doesn’t lose her job.”

And that’s a major concern when unions in government become overly powerful.

While Gliniewicz certainly is not emblematic of all government employees, his ability to retain his job despite his record is troublesome.

Those who work for government should be held to the same workplace standards as those who do not.

From janitors to judges to the highest executive office, no one should be guaranteed a job for life regardless of unacceptable performance or conduct.

Generosity toward vulnerable will light up holidays more than strands of bulbs Homebound senior citizens are getting fewer nutritious meals delivered to their homes.

Public health departments are cutting back on services.

Doctors are being asked to treat state workers and their families without any expectation of getting paid anytime soon.

Shelters for women fleeing domestic abuse are closing or cutting back. The list of effects of Illinois’ budget impasse goes on and on.

But talk about not decorating the Capitol dome for Christmas, and the public attention perks up. The state didn’t need more tangible symbols of the budget mess it’s mired in, but it got another last week when Secretary of State Jesse White’s office announced it would forego the annual tradition of draping holiday lights from the Capitol’s dome. Doing so, White’s office said, would save

about $7,300.

The amount might seem paltry, especially when compared with the staggering numbers facing the state – a chasm that grows deeper every day that the state goes without a budget.

But White’s office acted correctly in cutting off this discretionary spending. The state already owes City, Water,

Light and Power more than $2.7 million in unpaid bills for its Springfield offices. Racking up even more unpaid electricity bills from the utility – also taxpayer-owned and facing its own budget struggles – would be irresponsible.

Perhaps not surprisingly, almost immediately a crowdsourcing effort to turn the lights

back on sprang up. Kristina Rasmussen, executive vice president of the conservative Illinois Policy Institute, told the SJ-R’s Doug Finke she agreed with White’s decision, but hated to see the lights go away.

Rasmussen and anyone else who contributes are certainly within their rights to attempt to raise the funds to bring back the lights. Holiday cheer is nice, after all. But it’s hard to be cheery when you think about people who are facing hunger, going without heat or not having a safe place to live.

Friday’s edition of the State Journal-Register had another story about a different fundraising effort. This one was about Megan Garcia, a Cantrall sixth-grader. Columnist Dave Bakke told the tale of how Megan, who’s 11, heard of a local family facing the crisis of having a 2-year-old diagnosed

with a brain tumor, and decided to help. First, she asked for donations to the family in lieu of birthday presents. Then she organized a school fundraiser.

At the end, she raised more than $3,000 to help the Ingram family.

Sadly, Illinois’ nonprofit organizations and the most vulnerable citizens they serve will need many adults with the heart and spirit of Megan Garcia to step up and help this holiday season.

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to help others in need – no matter how small the amount – this will be the year to contribute. And that generosity toward the most vulnerable among us will light up the holidays far more than strands of bulbs hanging from a dome ever could.

Experiencing heartbreak

Previous quarterfinal losses provide motivation for Warriors

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – To say that Lincoln-Way West’s football team experienced real heartbreak on the two occasions where it reached the Class 5A quarterfinals is an understatement.

In 2012, coach Dave Ernst’s Warriors came up just short on a two-point conversion in overtime against Joliet Catholic on its own field and the next year, host Sycamore rallied in sloppy conditions before stopping West just shy of a tying score as time expired.

With many players on this year’s squad who were in the Sycamore game or had brothers on the team for one or both of those disappointing losses, it’s a safe bet the the Warriors have plenty of motivation to make sure that the third time proves to be the charm.

West (9-2), which suffered a tough loss in the second round in Class 6A last season, hopes to finally get over the hurdle against Peoria (10-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m. in New Lenox when it makes its third Class 5A quarterfinal appearance in the past four years.

A year ago, the Lions defeated Morris in the 5A quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals, where they fell to eventual champion Sacred Heart-Griffin.

Plainfield North has plethora of D-I talent

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – John Darlington endured some friendly teasing following the Wednesday afternoon national letter-of-intent signing day ceremony at Plainfield North.

With five of his seniors signing to continue their baseball careers at NCAA Division I institutions, how can the Tigers help but be good next spring?

In truth, North has been outstanding year after year under Darlington, including a berth in the Class 4A supersectionals last season. But never have the baseball Tigers had five D-I signees at one such ceremony.

The five are catcher Jake Dunham (Northern Illinois), pitcher/hitter Josh Garner (St. Louis), pitcher Zach Martin (Notre Dame), shortstop Zach Jarosz (South Dakota State) and pitcher/outfielder Justin Yeager (Southern Illinois).

Yet, baseball was not the only show feted on the stage of the school auditorium. Not by a long shot. The other North athletes who signed are remarkable as well.

How about girls swimmer Carly Kramer going to Arizona State? Or cross country and track standout Rachael Lau casting her lot with Duke.

Plainfield North’s Lauren Robeck was one of three volleyball playeres to sign with a Division I program. Robeck signed with North Carolina-Greenville, while Madison Cassady signed with Arkansas State.

Allezah Washington will go to Western Illinois.

Heberg will continue her career at McKendree. And then there are the girls volleyball players – Madison Cassady (Arkansas State), Lauren Robeck (North Carolina-Green-

ville) and Aleezah Washington (Western Illinois).

All those programs are on the Division I level except McKendree, which is D-II. The format for the ceremo-

ny orchestrated by North athletic director Ron Lear called for the respective coaches to speak on behalf of their player or players. That was followed by each of the honorees having an opportunity to give a short speech of thank yous to coaches, teammates, parents, siblings and anyone else who helped make their big day possible.

Darlington discussed the merits of each of his honored baseball players. He was serious for the most part, but couldn’t help joking with Jarosz about his college choice.

“Why would you want to go to a Dakota to play baseball?”

Darlington said. “You’ll be throwing snowballs there.”

Jarosz is an outstanding three-sport athlete. He led the Joliet area in receiving this football season and will be a contributor in basketball.

“To be a three-sport athlete is a major accomplishment at a school of 2,500 kids,” Darlington said.

Darlington said Yeager is battling a shoulder injury but hopefully will be pitching come spring.

Garner is a three-year starter who Darlington said “had the best finish to a junior season, especially offensively, that I have seen.”

He said NIU will get a kid with a tremendous work ethic in Dunham. He added that

Martin is just learning how to pitch and has a chance to be something special before he leaves Notre Dame.

Girls swimming coach George Sam said of Kramer: “She is our hardest worker, and when your hardest worker is your best athlete, that says a lot. Arizona State is getting quite an athlete.”

Cross country and track coach Tammy Gummerson was similar in her praise of Lau. “Rachel is a hard worker and top-notch student,” she said. “Now I’m a Duke fan.”

Lau, who holds numerous school records, finished 12th to earn all-state accolades at last weekend’s Class 3A state cross country meet.

Girls basketball coach Reggie Lemon said he has watched Heberg “put hours of energy into her sport.” He said he first knew Heberg when she was shorter than him. Now that she has shot up past him, he said, “Every day, she’ll see me and say, ‘What’s up, shorty?’ ” Girls volleyball coach Tracey Marshall was unable to attend but sent a statement summarizing the accomplishments of Cassady, Robeck and Washington.

“Putting all their stats and accolades aside, though, I want to thank them for the time they have taken to mentor our younger athletes,” Marshall said.

Right guard Bryan Brokop started in the Sycamore game as a sophomore and wants to see his program finally earn its initial trip to the semifinals.

“Some of us have been in this situation before,” Brokop said. “But I feel that the group of guys that we’re playing with now can take it to the next level and we can get over this quarterfinal hump. If we can, it will be a big win for us. We have the

guys who can do it.”

Peoria is averaging 47 points a game but coach Tim Thornton’s Big Twelve champions are also allowing over 30 points per contest.

“We don’t want to end our season on a sad note again,” said running back Gabe Montalvo, who played against Sycamore as a sophomore and watched his brother Javier compete in both quarterfinal defeats. “We’d like to be the first group to make it past the quarterfinals so the kids who made it there don’t feel like what they did was a waste. I feel that our defense can stop any offense that we face and our offense just has to start out like we can.”

The Warriors are averaging 34 points per game and giving up just under 15 points.

“Those two games were hard-fought, but they slipped away from us, so hopefully we can get a win,” said linebacker Trey Telez, who played in the Sycamore game as a freshman.

“Hopefully the third time’s the charm so we can get revenge for the guys before. It should be a good atmosphere. We’ve been on a hot streak with a couple of good wins in the playoffs.”

Senior running back Grahm McClure still recalls the 21-20 overtime loss to JCA in 2012 at West, since his brother Gage was the center in that contest.

“It was real emotional seeing guys in that situation since

everyone was doing their jobs and doing what they were asked to do,” McClure said. “I hope this year that if everyone does what they’re asked to do that we should be successful. If we win, it will be real great for everyone who’s here and it will great to be playing for everyone else who’s played here.”

Junior defensive back Josh Bohne also watched that tough defeat to the Hilltoppers. His brother Jake was a linebacker on that first quarterfinal squad.

“We lost to two great teams and it was tough to go out like that,” Bohne said. “But we want to change that and take another step with our team and make it to the semifinals. We have a great team to do it. If we win,

it will be a lot of weight lifted off of the program’s shoulders.

After making a four-hour bus ride last week, it’s nice to play at home and we’re ready.”

Sophomore linebacker Ryan Robbins recalls the disappointment of both losses because his brother Jake was a receiver on the two quarterfinal teams.

“Those losses were upsetting,” Robbins said. “But every year we work hard in the offseason and in each game in order to get to these type of games.

Hopefully we can get it this year. It’s a great opportunity for us and I think we can grasp it. I think my brother’s a little more excited than all of us. He’ll be very happy as will everyone who’s played for this program.”

“Raber is a good-size kid,” Furcron said. “I knew he could step up and replace Chase [Krumviede, the senior in last year’s line]. He is filling some big shoes.”

Furcron, who has college offers from Southern Illinois, Western Illinois and South Dakota State and has talked with Army, said communication leads to the JCA line’s success.

“We communicate on and off the field, and that’s key,” he said. “None of us rotate out, so we get more and more together as we keep playing together.

“Of course, we also learn a lot playing all this time for Coach Douglas.”

The line has paved the way for senior Michael Johnson to lead the area in rushing. He is at 1,831 yards and averages 7.9 a carry. Sophomore speedster Ke’Von Johnson stepped in when Harry

Davis was injured and has contributed 879 yards with a 10.0 average.

“In Michael’s earlier years, his guards would be pulling and he was trying to outrun them,” Furcron said.

“Now he is a more patient runner, and he runs hard.

“Ke’Von I’ve known for a long time.

The way he plays is amazing.”

Guard Ze’Veyon Furcron – they can call him “Z” – said playing for Joliet Catholic offensive line coach Dave Douglas is an experience.

“If we do anything wrong, he will see it and correct it right away,” Furcron said as the Hilltoppers prepared for the 1 p.m. Saturday Class 5A quarterfinal game at East Suburban Catholic rival Nazareth. “Sometimes I think they are little things, but he gets after us, anyway.”

Who knows, correcting little things might be the key for the Hilltoppers as they attempt to get past Nazareth for the second time. In Week 7, JCA survived, 38-35, after leading at halftime, 31-0.

“We came out and punched them in the mouth, and then in the second half, we lacked energy,” Furcron said. “We thought they were done. But they have athletes. They had more left than we thought.”

So for this game?

“We have to slow things down,” Furcron said. “We have to play our game, slow down and drive people off the line of scrimmage. That’s what we do best.”

Furcron (who is listed at 6-foot-1, 310 pounds) starts at left guard, between left tackle Tyler Witt (6-3, 305) and center Ricky Fleming (6-0, 275). Sophomore Shane Raber (6-0, 295) is at right guard, with Ethan Emerson (6-5, 245) at right tackle. That averages out to about 6-2, 288 per man.

Ekhomu, Reardon, Fellows head JCA signings

From boys volleyball, Blake Reardon is headed to Ball State.

And, baseball pitcher Drake Fellows signed with Vanderbilt.

Three of the biggest names on the Joliet Catholic athletic roster were among the nine who were honored Thursday morning in a national letter-of-intent signing ceremony at the school.

The others casting their lot for the next four or five years were softball player Alyssa Callans with Maryville in St. Louis, tennis player Jack Geissler with Grand Valley State, cross country runner Kristen Johnson with Purdue Calumet, baseball pitcher Jared Jones with Saint Xavier and girls volleyball player Jessica Simon with Augustana University in South Dakota.

Simon and her teammates, of course, will be at Redbird Arena on the Illinois State University campus in Normal this weekend as JCA pursues the Class 3A state championship.

The Angels’ basketball program has lost the services of forwards Jnaya Walker and Ty Battle, who transferred after last season. In addition, Kenny Battle resigned as JCA’s coach.

“I’m still the leader,” she said. “I have to bring the energy for us. I want to get everyone involved. The girls who have come out to join us, I need to let them know we need them.”

Ekhomu considered South Carolina, Ohio State and DePaul but settled on Florida State because “they made me feel like I was part of their family.”

Reardon, an outside hitter whose sister Morgan, a former JCA standout, is a junior playing at Loyola, said he was

“super excited” about signing with Ball State.

“I already know a bunch of the guys who will be going there with me,” he said. “I like the way they play the game.”

“In the 10 years of our program, we had not had a legacy player until Blake Reardon,” he said. “Last year he led us to our first 30-win season and first East Suburban Catholic title. He holds our school kills record and will add to that this season.

“It’s great to see him going to the school (Ball State) that

had the founding men’s volleyball program in the country.”

Of course, when Fellows’ name is mentioned, the question always is asked, “What happens when he gets drafted?”

“The draft is a special thing, no doubt,” Fellows said. “If it’s the right fit for me and my family, I would be interested.

But Vanderbilt is still a great second.”

Fellows committed to Vanderbilt early because it offered three positives – good baseball program, warm climate and academics.

Baseball coach Jared Voss said all Fellows has done in 128

innings in two varsity seasons is allow 12 earned runs, strike out 175 and walk 18.

Voss said Jones, who did not pitch much last season, could slide into the rotation behind Fellows in the spring.

“Saint Xavier was an outstanding choice for Jared,” Voss said. “He is a real historian of the game. I think he is going to hit his stride this year.”

Callans, meanwhile, pitches for softball coach Dave Douglas and has been the No. 1 for three years. “You hear it said somebody throws like a girl,” Douglas said.

“If you throw like Alyssa, you’re a pretty good ballplayer. And what really stands out about her is she is a terrific teammates.”

Boys tennis coach Scott Allgood noted Geissler is a superb student, was the ESC player of the year last season and led the team to a sectional championship.

Johnson battled through a hip injury in track season last spring and came back to run well in the fall for the cross country team.

Girls volleyball coach Christine Scheibe said Simon did not play full-time as a junior, when she filled an important reserve role.

“But this year I had no doubt Jessica would be a leader,” Scheibe said. “She has been on the floor 100 percent of the time. We knew she would be a setter, but one or two games into the season, we knew we needed her to be a hitter as well. I am proud of how she has handled herself.”

Lukasik also might be a factor Saturday in another way. He does the place-kicking and has had a good year placing his kickoffs while converting 44 extra points and one field goal.

You never know which of those little things that Furcron mentioned might make the difference Saturday on either side of the ball. Or, maybe it will be special teams.

It’s what the playoffs are all about. Two quality teams with an opportunity to advance to the semifinals, attempting to find that last little edge that puts them over the top.

It doesn’t get any better.

Rams offer special blend of physicality

But there’s something about the Rams that makes them seem more physical, if that’s possible.

“We just worry about what we try to do,” Rams star defensive tackle Aaron Donald said.

“Our mindset every week is to be the more physical team and go out there and play that way.

I don’t know if we’re more physical. We just go out there and try to do our part and be a physical team.”

Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase called the Rams “about one of the most physical teams that we’ve played to date,” comparing them to the Seahawks in intensity.

“They really get after it. They play sideline to sideline,” he said. “They play all the way to the whistle, so you’ve just got to bring your ‘A’ game. You better be physical. You better make sure you come to play physical football.”

Jay Cutler said it all starts with the St. Louis’ front – the Rams are second in the league in sacks per pass attempt, which allows the cornerbacks to “take some gambles and make some plays and sit on some stuff, which makes you a little bit leery as a quarterback.”

“They play pretty aggressive.

They fly around. They’ve got a lot of guys that are playmakers on their defense and in their DB corps,” Bears receiver Marc Mariani said. “Their physicality shows up on tape. It’s nothing we’re not used to. We’re ready for it, and we’re prepared to go out and battle on Sunday.”

The Rams’ defense is a focal point for opponents because it is talented and fast and has made big plays. The physicality is referenced often, but there’s more to it. It’s how the Rams play “physical” defense.

“They play hard. They play through the whistle,” Bears guard Patrick Omameh said.

“They play with aggression.”

It’s a mindset the Rams seem to exude, that idea that they don’t stop at the whistle, something that has been perceived as “dirty play” by some considering what happened against quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and Minnesota last week.

“I wouldn’t say they’re more physical than anybody else.

We’ve played against a lot of physical teams, but they’re extremely active,” Bears guard Matt Slauson said.

By “portals,” Bitters means items such as landmarks, statues and murals, that Niantic – developer of the cellphone-based game Ingress – might deem interesting. For game purposes, Bitters belongs to the enlightened green team, which is battling the resisting blue team.

Dozens of gamers – wearing either blue or green name tags – met about noon Saturday at the Will Country Courthouse in Joliet for socialization and to introduce Ingress to newbies.

Similar meet-ups are held the first Saturday of the month in various places around the globe, Bailey said.

One of those present Saturday in Joliet was Eddie Moya of Chicago, a member of the blue team who began playing Ingress about 18 months ago and has even attended anomalies – large gaming events officiated by Ingress developers – in other parts of the country.

Because Ingress has only two teams, members hail from all over the world, Bailey said.

Monthly gatherings put faces on the players. After the game, everyone agrees on a local restaurant for a communal lunch, he added.

Both teams are interested in “exotic matter” or “XM,” an “energy” that enhances people’s abilities, Bailey said. This exotic matter is concentrated mostly in artistic and cultural works, he added.

Since no one understands this energy, the blue team – concerned of devastating side effects – works to protect mankind, while the green team – convinced of the energy’s benefits -– wants to increase its availability.

In order to claim portals and build virtual territories, players find and physically interact – within 40 meters – of interesting objects, Bailey said. When people find one that’s unclaimed, they take a picture and submit it to Niantic for approval, he added.

Ingress generally is played as a solitary game – although entire families, especially if kids are involved, will play together, Bailey said. It’s impossible to move up to high levels unless groups of eight or more work together, he added.

For instance, Bitters, who

attended Saturday’s event in Joliet, plays Ingress with her significant other, Nik Macholz of Rockdale, and they both introduced the game to his son, Eddie Macholz, 12.

“We were bringing him with us,” Bitters said, “so he might as well play.”

Tammie Hardrick of Joliet travels for business, so Ingress provides opportunities to explore little-known features of unfamiliar towns.

Bob Perschau of New Lenox is on the blue team with his adult son, Zacharoid Perschau, as is Christine Teeling of Joliet, who joined the team when she began dating Zacharoid and attended the meet-up with them.

“Blue is my favorite color,” Teeling said as explanation for her team choice. “And it would have been weird in the relationship to be rivals.”

A study from the United States found that 20 percent of women who were more than 20 years past menopause still had hot flashes.

Another recent study from the U.S. found that in women who began to experience hot flashes before their menstrual periods stopped, hot flashes persisted in nearly 70 percent 12 years after menopause.

What treatments should you consider? In my opinion (it’s a controversial area), hormone therapy is generally the best option for the first 10 years following menopause (unless breast cancer runs in your family).

Beyond 10 years, hormone therapy starts to increase a woman’s risk for heart disease.

After that, other treatments can be effective.

This includes a drug called clonidine, the SSRI and SNRI drugs used for depression, and two drugs used to treat seizures and nerve pain, gabapentin and pregabalin. (It’s not that hot flashes are a sign of depression or seizures.

It’s that medicines used to treat those problems also are effective against hot flashes.)

So to the many readers who said their doctors didn’t appear to believe that they were still having hot flashes a decade or more after menopause, my advice to you is simple.

Tell them that many scientific studies support what you are saying.

ly you wrote about a patient who was still having hot flashes in her early 70s, long after menopause. I’m in my 60s, and I still have them.

How long might they last?

Dear Reader: Following the publication of that column, I got many letters with questions like yours. These letters also described what it is like to suffer from hot flashes.

One reader recalled driving with her parents on a bitter cold winter night. Suddenly, her mother had a hot flash.

It was so bad that she “turned the heater off, opened the car windows and stuck her head out the window. My father asked her what the heck she was doing.”

Or: “Take a shower – forget it. You dry yourself off, and then you are just as wet as you were.

And you stay that way for a good half-hour.”

In my column, I had advised removing as much clothing as possible to allow the release of body heat. A reader wrote: “I can’t strip down any further. I’d be arrested.”

These letters reminded me of a patient of mine who said that she had suffered from hot flashes since her periods stopped, at age 54.

Since then, “I have good months and bad months, but they’re always there.

They’ve become a part of my life.”

What made the patient remarkable was that she was 89 years old.

Several large research studies on this subject, involving hundreds of thousands of women, have been published in the past decade.

They (finally) demonstrate what patients have been saying all along.

One study from Sweden found that 9 percent of women age 72 were still

Put her in one of the bedrooms at the other end of the house, and you and your husband take the one next to hers.

Have the baby monitor next to your bed so you can hear her if she stirs during the night.

You might also consider getting a dog, who would certainly alert you should anyone attempt to enter your home after you and your husband are asleep.

A gentle way to discuss this would be to explain that you have been diagnosed with cancer and may not have long to live.

Tell her you love her, that in your heart she will always be your daughter, but that you are not 100 percent sure it is biologically true.

Explain that you are saying it not to hurt or reject her, but only so that if she is not your child she may be able to locate the person who is, and she won’t be fatherless when you are gone.

Dear Abby : When my husband and I bought our house, having children wasn’t yet on our minds.

The master bedroom is at one end of the house; the other two bedrooms are at the opposite end.

Two years into our marriage we got a surprise blessing – a baby girl. She’s now 3 and still sleeping in our room in her own toddler bed.

She has great sleeping habits, and I don’t think it would affect her to sleep in another room.

I am the problem. I can’t bear to have her at the other end of the house.

All I can think about are horror stories of babies and small children being snatched from their beds (from the window) while the parents sleep.

What if something happens and I don’t wake up?

This may seem ridiculous to some, but it’s a real fear for me. Can you offer some advice? – Paranoid Mom-
