Miner gets life sentence for Hickory Street murders

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It was already determined Joshua Miner would receive a life sentence for the murders of Eric Glover Jr. and Terrance Rankins.

But Judge Gerald Kinney told Miner “there was a time [he’d] be facing the death penalty,” Joshua giving his sentence WednesMiner day.

Kinney said he found it impossible to comprehend two people were murdered for “a gain so minimal.”

“To take two lives for pocket change, cigarettes and drugs ... the only word I have for it is senseless,” Kinney said.

Miner chose not to speak during Wednesday’s sentencing. No one testified on Miner’s behalf, and no one from his family was in the courtroom.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said Glover Jr.’s and Rankins’ deaths resulted from “the convergence of four people with no conscience, no empathy, no remorse.”

“It created a black hole on Hickory Street,” Glasgow said.

Glasgow told Kinney that when Miner was a child, he choked his sister unconscious when she changed the channel while they were watching TV. “His mother called him her ‘little Jekyll and Hyde,’ ” Glasgow said. “How prophetic.”

On Jan. 9, 2013, Rankins and Glover Jr. were lured to an apartment in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street

by Alisa Massaro and Bethany McKee. The victims were strangled by Miner and Adam Landerman, authorities said.

All four suspects were charged with murder. Massaro pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for agreeing to testify against the others.

McKee was found guilty in a separate trial and sentenced to life in prison. Landerman is expected to face trial next year. Kinney, who is retiring this month, reassigned Landerman’s case Wednesday to Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

Landerman is accused of strangling Glover Jr. to death while Miner killed Rankins.

“This defendant will still get to write his family and even see them but my son won’t,” Glover’s mother, Nicole Jones, said during Miner’s sentencing.

“I will never get another ‘I love you’ from my son,” Jones told Kinney before sobbing for nearly a minute.

Rankins’ mother, Jamille Kent, Glover’s brother, Drakkar Williams, and Tracy Sawyer, whose son Marcus was Rankins’ best friend, also testified at the hearing.

The defense attorneys, Michael Renzi and Lea Norbut, did not call any witnesses Wednesday. Renzi told Kinney that Miner will use his right to see if the case can be appealed.

Harvest gets tougher for area farmers

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com This year is shaping up to be a record-breaking one for corn and soybean harvests in Illinois – and farmers in Will and Grundy counties aren’t doing too bad either.

But local farmers, particularly in eastern Will County, still are out in the fields battling against two things out of their control: colder temperatures and plunging prices.

The combination means some farmers could wind up breaking even financially, at best, said Mark Schneidewind, manager for the Will County Farm Bureau.

“Prices aren’t where they were a year ago,” he said.

Both soybean and corn prices are down significantly from a year ago, according to a U.S Department of Agricul-

ture report. Corn futures for December are down by about 37 percent from a year ago, at $3.69 a bushel, while soybean prices are down by 27 percent, at $10.26.

Crop progress

The USDA report also shows a record-high corn yield in Illinois, at about 200 bushels per acre, up from a record high of 178 in 2013. Soybean yield could also be a record-high, at 56 bushels an acre, breaking the previous record of 51.5 bushels in 2010.

Some pockets in central and southern Will County could see close to 210 bushels per acre for corn. But in eastern Will, where excessive spring rains caused planting to start late, average yields could be significantly lower at 110 bushels, Schneidewind said.

The county’s average is

typically between 165 and 180 bushels an acre, he said.

Some Grundy farmers could see close to 200 bushels of corn an acre – which is better than the county’s yearly average, said Tasha Bunting, manager for the Will County Farm Bureau.

Soybean farmers could yield close to 55 bushels an acre, she said.

About 15 percent of corn and 3 percent of soybean crops are still left to be harvested in Will County, Schneidewind said.

If the weather holds up this week, things should be fairly good overall, Schneidewind said.

“We’re holding our breath that the weather is good this weekend,” Schneidewind said.

QUICK NEWS Knights of Columbus donates coats

FRANKFORT – St. Mary Knights of Columbus Council 6993 plans to present 48 new coats to the Frankfort Township Food Pantry on Thursday.

The donation is part of a Knights of Columbus initiative that has distributed more than 167,000 coats in United States and Canada, according to a news release.

Locally, Council 6993 out of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mokena also makes monthly donations to the Frankfort Township Food Pantry.

Council 6993 will have a pancake breakfast Sunday. The breakfast is one of the fundraisers with which the council raises money to buy coats. It will start at 8 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 19515 115th Ave., Mokena.

Spanish Community Center named Illinois Welcoming Center

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Rogelio Guerrero said a common misconception about the Spanish Community Center is that it only serves Latinos.

Since 1967, the Joliet nonprofit organization has served everyone – not just Latino families – with day care, a food pantry, English as a Second Language classes and other services, said Guerrero, the center’s board president.

But now the center has the distinction of being named an Illinois Welcoming Center. As a welcoming center, the nonprofit’s staff will enhance the services they already provide with what state agencies offer.

“Initially we were just primarily serving the Will County area and maybe some of those in the outskirts. Now this is going to put us statewide,” Guerrero said. “So, Chicago and southern [Illinois] – they should be able to have us in their database systems if anybody in that area is looking to move up to the area here.”

Welcoming centers help immigrant and refugee individuals and families assimilate in Illinois with services and information they need.

The centers are meant to eliminate barriers people from out-of-state encounter when accessing those services.

The first welcoming center opened in 2007 in Melrose Park, which state leaders noted was an ideal location because of its strong immigrant history and population.

“I think it’s been booming.

I’ve been born and raised in this area. … It’s expanded into the New Lenox border and the west side of Joliet and Plainfield,” Guerrero said.

Even though the Spanish Community Center serves everyone, most of its clientele is Latino, he said. According to the center, 70 percent of the center’s clientele is Latino, 25 percent black and 5 percent white.

More Latino families are moving to the area for jobs.

It’s also an area where they know family and friends, he said.

In October, community leaders and local officials celebrated the Spanish Community Center’s new distinction

in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The effort to make it a welcoming center was started by state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Jo-

liet, said Elizabeth Nevarez, the center’s executive director.

“At the ribbon-cutting [ceremony], we had over 50 different organizations that came in, and I said we are all doing an excellent job that we are trying to do for the community,” Nevarez said. “We are dedicated to the progress of the community, and there’s still some work left to be done.”

Nevarez said the center struggles with funding and can always use donations and sponsorships. The largest funding comes from the day care, which in turn receives most of the funding.

The center will partner with other organizations and companies for help. When it came to enrolling people in the health insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act, Nevarez said the center worked with the Will County Health Department and Aunt Martha’s Youth Service Center.

Most people are not aware of the Spanish Community Center and the services it offers, Guerrero said. He hopes as the center functions as a welcoming center more people become aware.

Nevarez said she’s heard people call the center a treasure. She knew it was when she and her family moved to the Joliet area in the mid1970s. The center was there to help her and her family.

“This taught me other people – not just my family – care.

There’s people outside that care, that want to help out and pay it forward,” she said.

Elwood is stop on U.S. Capitol tree tour

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent It wasn’t just Santa Claus who came to town last night, the 88 foot Christmas tree, which will be erected on the U.S. Capitol lawn, made an appearance in Elwood, as well.

The village of Elwood was one of many stops along the route from Chippewa National Forest in north central Minnesota, where the white spruce was chosen, to Washington, D.C., where it is scheduled to arrive on Nov. 21.

Elwood’s holiday lighting celebration is typically held the Friday after Thanksgiving, said Mayor Bill Offerman.

But they chose to incorporate the arrival of the tree into the annual celebration.

“As long as we had the opportunity of the national Christmas tree,” said Offerman.

The village hall was packed with people enjoying sloppy Joe sandwiches, chips and hot chocolate, kids having their faces painted or getting pho-

tos and hugs from several costumed characters.

Outside, the Elwood School choir performed Christmas carols while people gathered around a 105 foot flatbed semitrailer and peeked inside windows to see the lit-up tree lying on its side.

Brothers Jacob and Anthony Cline of Elwood, along with parents Dave and Cari Ingram, checked out the tree before going inside to wait for Santa to arrive.

“I think [the tree] is large, cool and awesome,” said Jacob.

Anthony also said it was cool because of how old it is.

Max Higgins had seen the tree earlier in the day at Steven’s Intermediate School in Wilmington where it stopped along the tour.

“It was pretty good, I got to sign my name on it,” he said.

They got the call about two months ago, and Elwood was thrilled to be a part of the tour.

Each year the Capitol tree comes from a different forest, said U.S. Forest Service Public Affairs Officer Tree Project Leader Mike Theune, who is stationed at Chippewa National Forest.

community along the tour, just half way in so far, has been phenomenal, he said.

“The kids are so excited, full of smiles and laughter,” Theune said. “The response is bigger than I thought.”

Theune and Tresouthick have been excited to work together, one from a national forest and the other from a national prairie.

“It’s important for students to recognize the ecosystems

and how we work together,” Tresouthick said. “We are just as excited to see [the tree] as the public.”

This is the third year the non-profit organization Choose Outdoors has worked with the U.S. Forest Service to bring in corporate sponsors to bring the tree on tour, said organization President Bruce Ward, making the cost to taxpayers minimal.

Both Ward and Theune pointed out the tree, referred to as “The People’s Tree,” is placed on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol, not the White House.

The tree lighting ceremony on December 3 will be hosted

by Speaker of the House John Boehner along with someone from Minnesota, said Ward. It will mark 50 years of the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree.

Ward was impressed with the ceremony held in Elwood, particularly the food and toy donations being brought in.

“What I appreciate is the emphasis on Christmas spirit,” he said. “There seems to be a lot of community spirit in this town.”

Ayres sworn in as a park district commissioner

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield resident Rob Ayres thanked people in attendance for the warm welcome he received after officially taking his oath as the Plainfield Township Park District board’s sixth commissioner.

“I hope to help out as much as I can,” Ayres said at Wednesday’s board meeting.

Ayres voted for the first time as a park district commissioner, but was quiet for most of night.

“I realized I had a ton to learn,” Ayres said, adding that he will soon attend a conference to help him learn the

ropes.

Up until Wednesday, the park district has had five commissioners who are currently President Mary Kay Ludemann, Vice President Janet Silosky, Larry Newton, Peter Steinys and Peter Hurtado.

As a result of a state law expanding the board to seven members, Ayres was selected by state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, as the sixth board member.

The law, pushed in Springfield by Bertino-Tarrant, Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, and Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, was a result of local residents pleading with state officials to dilute a board majority that made several questionable de-

cisions.

Bertino-Tarrant and Cross were each tasked with selecting a new commissioner.

Cross has not yet announced his selection.

Ayres said he plans to run for one of the two new seats when both are up for next spring’s elections.

Insurance change

The board voted to approve changing the park district’s employee health insurance carrier from United Health Care to the Park District Risk Management Agency, or PDRMA. According to park district documents, staff narrowed the choices for a health in-

surance carrier down to three proposals with monthly premiums of $52,216.07 from United Health Care, $32,275.41 from Blue Cross Blue Shield and $46,397.77 from PDRMA. While Blue Cross Blue Shield presented cost savings, Executive Director Carlo Capalbo said the savings is a one-time discount and the price would increase in future renewals. PDRMA would require a three-year commitment.

“The savings would equal out over three years,” Capalbo said, adding he felt PDRMA would provide employees with more stability. PDRMA’s plan also provides several programs and a wellness

grant for employees.

The approval of PDRMA was passed with a 4-1 vote, with Hurtado absent from the meeting and Steinys voting against it. Steinys questioned going with a more expensive plan when a cheaper option was available.

The board also voted to approve a new planning director position, which will be paid from the savings of three eliminated positions.

The planning department was eliminated in January by former Executive Director Garrett Peck. He outsourced the duties before resigning a week later.

Electronics recycling program in jeopardy, director warns lleonecross@shawmedia.com Will County’s electronics recycling and collection program – a free public drop-off service for residents – could be in jeopardy.

That was the message Wednesday from Dean Olson, who heads up Will County’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division, during a county board Legislative and Policy Committee meeting.

Olson characterized the issue as “urgent,” noting immediate action is needed during the state legislative veto session next week or during the lame-duck session in January.

Olson said the rising cost of recycling – coupled with low annual recycling goals set by state law for electronics manufacturers – is to blame.

Once manufacturers meet those weight goals, they no longer have to pay recycling contractors to process items, he said.

In turn, recyclers across the state are asking local governments to foot the bill, as allowed by state law, Olson said.

In Will County’s case, that would result in “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in additional costs not budgeted, he said.

The law in question, which passed in 2012, banned certain electronic items from landfills and set recycling quotas for state manufacturers. The law was meant to fully pay for residential electronics recycling, but is failing to meet statewide demand as e-waste increases each year, Olson said.

The price to recycle glass has increased, too, Olson said.

This could result in the county’s contractor, Vintage Tech Recycling, halting free recycling services in the future, Olson said. If nothing is done, other collection programs statewide could close, as they have in DuPage County and west Cook County, he said.

“In some cases, sometime in late spring, all contracts will run out with manufacturers and there won’t be any money left,” Olson said.

Marta Keane, recycling program specialist for the county’s Land Use department, said in an email the 2012 state law was designed so the cost to recycle electronics would be shared between manufacturers and local governments.

This year, nearly all electronics manufacturers met pre-established quotas for pounds of electronics to recycle before the end of the year,

she said.

Olson said without manufacturers paying the recyclers, many are storing glass in warehouses because it’s too costly to get rid of.

Mark Kenzler, vice president and chief operating officer for the Illinois Manufacturers Association, said while the group is concerned about increasing the goals so manufacturers foot the entire bill, they’re “more than happy to have a conversation.”

“We’re certainly willing to have a discussion,” Kenzler said. “We’re concerned about the cost. Manufacturers, they like to plan. They likely have contracts already signed so you can’t just flip on a switch and double the cost of everything.”

Legislation in the works would increase goals and bar recyclers from asking local governments to foot the bill, Olson said.

Julie Curry, the county’s legislative liaison, told committee members Wednesday that such legislation would be a tough sell in Springfield due to manufacturers’ opposition.

“That’s a big road block,” Curry said.

A representative from Vintage Tech Recycling could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

JOLIET – The Joliet Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, will participate in a statewide effort to increase seat belt usage and crack down on drunken driving.

Special enforcement efforts will include several seat belt safety zones at various locations throughout the city, a roadside safety checkpoint and citywide saturation enforcement, according to a

news release from the city.

Officers assigned to these details will be checking for child restraint violations, DUI violations, and other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code. The enforcement campaign is possible through a grant from IDOT and will help to deter drunken driving and increase the usage of seat belt and child restraints during and after the Thanksgiving holiday, according to the news release.

JOLIET – All lanes on a section of McDonough Street are open again after the county completed roadwork Monday.

The project widened McDonough Street from Houbolt Road to Infantry Drive.

There still is landscaping work to do, and that may require flaggers that slow down traffic, Will County Engineer Bruce Gould said.

New traffic signals still must be installed at Houbolt Road.

But there will be no more permanent lane closures, Gould said.

The project included an off-road side path that could be used by bicyclists. The multi-use path, along with streetlights added to McDonough, had been requested by the city of Joliet, which paid for the two additions and will take over responsibility for maintenance of the road once the project is completed, Gould said.

Joliet wanted the multiuse path as a connection between the Rock Run Trail along Houbolt and the Joliet Junction Trail, which is east of Infantry.

Other work included a median lane for turns, curbs and gutters and drainage.

Shorewood approves truck restrictions

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Trucks traveling to the Heartland Corporate Center in Shorewood can’t take some local roads in Shorewood after the village approved an ordinance adding weight limits.

The ordinance approved at Tuesday’s board meeting institutes an immediate 30,000-pound weight limit for parts of three roads.

Vehicles weighing more than 30,000 pounds can’t travel on Seil Road from Frontage Road to the western village border. The weight limit also includes Mound Road from Frontage to the western border and River Road from Route 52 to the southern limits.

The ordinance allows trucks more than 30,000 pounds to make residential deliveries using the streets if there aren’t more efficient ways to get to their destinations.

The ordinance originally set a 20,000-pound limit, but Trustee Dan Anderson asked to change it to 30,000 pounds.

“We were getting the trucks that were coming in off the highway,” Anderson said, noting that the roads affected are built for about 16,000 pounds. “They were going to tear our roads. I think they were punching in the address in their GPS and it took them through town instead of on a highway.”

Anderson said the village

board and administration has worked with Heartland for the past couple of years to drive truck traffic off local roads.

Heartland and the village have put up signs. But now, village police have the authority to enforce the ordinance on truck drivers that don’t comply.

Portillo’s drive-thru

The village board also approved Tuesday a plan for Portillo’s at 1155 Brook Forest Ave. to construct an additional drive-thru stacking lane to alleviate daily congestion on the southeast corner of the parking lot.

The drive-thru would replace a row of existing parking spaces and one light pole.

The light pole will be relocated.

“They needed it,” Anderson said. “They’re getting stacked up out there pretty good.”

Development fees

Ordinances to reduce the library impact fee and extend the sewer tap-on fee also were passed by the board.

Instead of increasing 5 percent to $430.15 a household, the library impact fee increase is reduced so each residential unit would pay $417.86.

The sewer tap-on fee discount that is in place, but expiring, was extended through April 1, 2017. The discount keeps the fee at $2,940 and will default back to $3,834 when the extension expires.

Grundy County Board OKs tax abatement for wind energy project

power from northwest Iowa and the surrounding region to communities in Illinois and other states.

The project includes the construction of a 500-mile direct current transmission line, starting in northwest Iowa and ending right outside of Morris, that will deliver 3,500 megawatts of renewable power to communities with a high demand for clean and reliable energy.

It also includes the construction of two converter stations, one in Grundy County and the other in Iowa.

Several aspects of the $2 billion project have been scrutinized by members of the Illinois Commerce Commission, the Illinois Farm Bureau, Commonwealth Edison, numerous landowners and some politicians – including state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris. The primary concern is the farmland the project will cut through in Iowa and Illinois.

The overall cost for the project is about $2 billion, with both converter stations costing about $300 million each and the transmission line costing about $1.4 billion.

But not all board members were pleased with the project.

Board members Eric Rasmusson, John Galloway and Doug Boresi voted no to the abatement for the project Monday night. John Almer abstained from voting.

“It’s not a proven entity, it’s not clean and it really competes with our local employment,” Galloway said after the meeting, referring to the local nuclear stations located in and around Grundy County.

Even if the ICC approves the project Thursday, it would also need to be approved by the Iowa Utility Board, as well.

Kurt said Clean Line Energy Partners filed for approval in Iowa last week and that the case will continue into next year.

MORRIS – Plans to construct a converter station and an overhead electric transmission line in Grundy County moved a step further this week with the Grundy County Board’s approval of an abatement of property taxes between Rock Island Clean Line and the county.

The abatement states Rock Island Clean Line LLC will pay Grundy County an estimated $104,000 each year for the project up until 2032.

“I’m pleased the board decided to move forward with the converter station,” Amy Kurt, manager of Clean Line Energy Partners, said after Monday’s meeting where the abatement was approved.

Other major taxing bodies have agreed to a tax abatement for the Clean Line project, including Saratoga Grade School District 60C, the Morris Community High School District 101 and the village of Channahon.

“The converter station will be located in the village of Channahon near those two school districts in Grundy County,” Kurt said.

Rock Island Clean Line will pay an estimated $100,000 each year to Channahon up until 2032; make a one-time estimated payment of $1.75 million to Morris Community High School; and a one-time estimated payment of $2.74 million to Saratoga Grade School.

On Thursday, the project is set to move to the Illinois Commerce Commission in Springfield for approval.

“All concerns are being decided by the ICC, including the route of the line and the need of the line; those are the two big things,” Kurt said.

Joliet Township house fire under investigation

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – No one was home Wednesday when a fire started in a house on Steinly Avenue.

East Joliet Fire Capt. Mike Kuban said neighbors reported seeing smoke about 10:30 a.m.

Crews arrived to find “heavy fire” coming from the rear of the single-story ranch house.

“A neighbor had been able

to get two dogs out of the house before we arrived,” Kuban said.

Kuban said the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes but caused substantial damage to the structure. The house is across from a corn field in a small subdivision off Route 52, west of Briggs Street.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon. An arson investigator had been called to the scene.

No one was hit.

Police say residents of Nobes Avenue were having food delivered to their house when the shots were fired outside.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said a 25-year-old delivery-

man brought pizza to the home at 7:52 p.m., but was given a $100 bill.

“The delivery man did not have change, so the homeowner gave the bill to a man who was visiting to go to a nearby gas station to get change,” Hoffmeyer said.

As the deliveryman waited with two adults and two small children, a vehicle drove down the street and several shots were heard, according to Hoffmeyer.

“The five individuals got down on the living room floor and no one was injured,” she said.

Hoffmeyer said the visitor returned with change, paid the delivery man and left before deputies arrived.

“Deputies observed a bullet hole in the front door of the residence that lodged into a living room wall,” she said.

The shooting remained under investigation Wednesday, Hoffmeyer said.

15-year-old charged in shoe robbery bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 15-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly taking sneakers at gunpoint Saturday.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Al Roechner said a tactical officer recognized the suspect from pictures on Facebook and linked him to the Lois Place apartment complex where the robbery occurred.

On Saturday, two 16-yearold boys arranged to sell collectors’ gym shoes through a Facebook page and brought four pairs, including white and blue Nike Air Jordans, to the complex at 10 p.m.

According to police reports, two suspects carrying a revolver and a pistol approached the sellers and took the shoes, cellphones and cash.

About 8 p.m. Sunday, an officer on patrol near Lois Place stopped two men who matched the robbers’ descriptions and were wearing white and blue Air Jordans. A 17-year-old who

rested Tuesday as one of the people involved in the shoe robbery. He was arrested on a charge of robbery and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

“Investigators haven’t ruled out that the armed teen found at Lois Place on Sunday is connected to the [robbery] suspect,” Roechner said.

Joseph was born in Joliet on March 3, 1913. He retired from the Ruberoid (G.A.F) after 29 years of service. Joseph was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in WWII. He was an Amphibian Tank Crewman, whose duties were assistant driver and machine gunner on the tank.

Joseph was an avid fisherman. He was a handyman who liked to work on old T.V.s and radios. He enjoyed music, especially polka and loved playing his guitar, harmonica and singing. Joseph had many favorite pastimes, including garage saling and watching Wheel of Fortune.

Joseph lived a long healthy life and was always happy and upbeat with a good sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face. Joseph will be greatly missed by all.

By BRUCE SHIPKOWSKI The Associated Press TRENTON, N.J. – Marge Roukema, a New Jersey Republican who spent more than two decades in Congress sparring regularly with ideologues within her party, has died. She was 85.

A spokeswoman at Christian Health Care Marge Center in Roukema Wyckoff said Roukema died at the nursing home early Wednesday. The cause was not disclosed.

Roukema represented northern New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District from 1981 to 2003. She described herself through the years as a strong fiscal conservative.

But on many social issues, she espoused a liberal Republican philosophy long associated with the Northeast.

She regularly broke with her party to vote with Democrats. She supported abortion rights, opposed school vouchers, voted for a 1994 ban on assault weapons, opposed term limits and supported a ban on unrestricted “soft money.”

Her independence ended up costing her a committee chairmanship. But she said she was elected “to speak my mind, not to represent whomever in the Republican leadership or a faction of the Republican Party.”

During the later years of her tenure, she was the longest-serving woman in Congress.

Female lawmakers were enough of a novelty in the early 1980s that female Republicans and Democrats got together in a bipartisan women’s caucus.

“We were considered token women members and we didn’t really have the ear of the leadership,” Roukema said in a 2001 interview. “It’s far different now.”

Born Marge Scafati, she obtained a degree in history and political science at Mont-

clair State University. She taught high school history and English before running for Congress – unsuccessfully in 1978, then successfully in 1980.

Roukema struggled at times as more conservative members of her party from regions outside the Northeast became more powerful on Capitol Hill. After Republicans seized control of the House in 1994, Roukema increasingly found herself assailed from the right.

Roukema maintained through the years that her tax record proved her conservative credentials. She voted against the tax hikes implemented under President Bill Clinton in 1993 and President George H.W. Bush in 1990, and she supported President Ronald Reagan’s tax cut in 1981 and the GOP’s unsuccessful $792 billion tax cut measure in 1999.

GOP leaders spurned Roukema’s 2001 bid to become chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, even though she had seniority on her side. She declared herself “gravely disappointed” by the decision, which she said would invite “a negative perception of the Republican Party.”

She subsequently turned down suggested consolation prizes, including the post of U.S. treasurer.

Roukema announced late in 2001 she would not run for a 12th term in 2002. “I will miss being a voice for our party of the fiscal conservatives and social moderates,” she said.

She also tried, but failed, to influence the selection of her successor. Republican State Assemblyman Scott Garrett, who had twice mounted primary challenges against her, calling her too liberal, handily won her seat in Congress in fall 2002, and continues in that post today. Roukema had endorsed another candidate in the 2002 GOP primary then declined to endorse either Garrett or his Democratic opponent in the general election.

Charles (Chuck) Arthur Wagner of Princeton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2014, in Tucson, Arizona. Born July 8, 1936, in Chicago, to Earl and Evelyn (Dressel) Wagner, he lived most of his life in Chicago suburbs, Cicero/ Berwyn, Bartlett, North Aurora and Joliet, five years in Tuscon, Arizona, and his final years in Princeton. He married his sweetheart, Joan Ann (Brichacek), in Cicero, in 1959.

Chuck was a proud Purdue alumni, and a skilled and caring Pharmacist for over 50 years. He worked for multiple pharmacy companies and owned his own drugstore (Westgate) in Joliet for eight years, with passion and compassion.

His love of his Boilermakers was always evident with his multiple hats and clothing. He was a diehard Chicago sports fan. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing poker with his friends, board games with his family, watching his kids and grandkids at their activities and cheering his sports teams. He took pride in serving his church as both a lecture and eucharistic minister.

He was loving husband, father and grandfather. Clearly the love of his life was his beautiful and special wife, Joan, who together enjoyed 55 wonderful years. He also had great pride and love for their four children, Deborah (Jim) Prebula of Pecatonica, Drs. Mark (Beth Ann) Wagner of Indianapolis, IN, Denise (Tom) Woolley of Princeton, and Michael (Nicole) Wagner of Plainfield; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two step grandchildren. He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families as well as many wonderful friends.

He will always be remembered for his powerful and inspiring voice, as well as his beautiful laugh and smile that would light up the room and warm our hearts.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, June Buchanan; brothers, Earl Jr. and Albert.

The family would like to thank the Bureau County Senior Center, Gateway Services B Part, and Dialysis Center staff in Spring Valley for all their care and support this last year.

Gov. Quinn calls governor-elect Rauner for first time

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn has called Governor-elect Bruce Rauner for the first time since he lost last week’s election to the Republican.

Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf said the “cordial” phone conversation took place Wednesday. Quinn’s office said it lasted a few minutes and the two discussed the Affordable Care Act. Quinn sought a second full term but lost by about five percentage points to Rauner in the Winnetka businessman’s first bid for public office.

Still, Quinn didn’t concede the race until the day after the election. He said he wanted to wait until all the votes were counted, particularly with some voters waiting well after polls closed to cast ballots.

Both candidates appeared at the same place Tuesday for a Veterans Day event at Soldier Field. They didn’t interact.

Kankakee man held on $1M bond in fatal shooting

KANKAKEE – A judge has set bond at $1 million for a Kankakee man accused of fatally shooting a 20-year-old man after an argument.

The Kankakee Daily Journal said Edgar Watkins, 29, was charged in Kankakee County court this week in the killing of Johan Rowe in October.

Prosecutors said Watkins was with a group of people congregating near a park when he started talking with Rowe.

Officials said Rowe later left and Watkins followed before shooting him.

Computers go down at all state motor vehicle sites

CHICAGO – A computer outage has affected all of the 138 motor vehicle facilities in Illinois.

Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker said the outage began Wednesday morning and some facilities were coming back online slowly. But Druker recommended people postpone visits if they could.

There was no word on what caused the outage. Technicians from IBM were working with

technology staff at the agency to resolve the problem.

Staffers at the facilities were trying to do as much as possible with pen and paper.

Some customers were sent home with courtesy cards allowing them to return another time without having to wait in line.

IDOT has until Dec. 19 to show reorganization plan

SPRINGFIELD – A judge has ordered the Illinois Department of Transportation to show by Dec. 19 it has a legitimate reason for dismissing 55 employees.

Sangamon County Circuit Judge Patrick Kelley issued the ruling Wednesday.

Kelley earlier halted IDOT’s plan to dismiss the so-called staff assistants on Sept. 30 until the agency handed over the

documents showing an authorized “material reorganization.”

IDOT announced the dismissals after a state investigation found more than 250 staff assistants had been hired improperly during the past decade.

Dismissals are allowed under a material reorganization. The Teamsters sought proof of the reorganization by seeking documents under the public-records law.

A federal judge in Chicago announced in a separate case last month the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee IDOT hiring.

Red Cross: Illinois tornado recovery continues

WASHINGTON – The American Red Cross said recovery efforts are continuing in parts of Illinois

hit by deadly tornadoes a year ago.

The not-for-profit relief group said Tuesday there still are almost 500 active cases being addressed in the affected communities. The Red Cross said some residents have ongoing mental health issues, homes in need of repair or soil contamination.

The storms on Nov. 17, 2013, damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes in central Illinois. Neighborhoods were flattened in towns such as Washington and Gifford. More than half a dozen people died as a result.

Officials said nearly 90 percent of the money donated to the Red Cross for the disaster has been spent or committed to be spent in coming recovery projects.

By JOSEF FEDERMAN The Associated Press JERUSALEM – Israeli authorities gave preliminary approval Wednesday to build 200 homes in a Jewish area of east Jerusalem, a move that threatened to push Israelis and Palestinians deeper into conflict after weeks of unrest over the city’s holiest sites.

The announcement came hours before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was scheduled to arrive in neighboring Jordan on a mission aimed in part at restoring calm. A State Department spokeswoman said Washington was “deeply concerned” by the decision.

Much of the recent violence has stemmed from tensions surrounding Jerusalem’s hilltop complex that is revered by Muslims and Jews. The collapse of U.S.-brokered peace talks, Israel’s war last summer in the Gaza Strip against the Islamic militant group Hamas, and continued Israeli settlement construction in east Jerusalem have added to the distrust.

Brachie Sprung, a spokeswoman in the mayor’s office, said city officials approved 200 homes in the Ramot area.

Sprung said it was just a preliminary stage of the planning process – meaning construction would be years away.

She also said city officials approved an additional 174 homes for construction in an Arab neighborhood.

To Israelis, the announcement was relatively harmless.

Ramot is a sprawling development already home to about 70,000 people, and most Israelis assume the area will remain part of Israel under any future peace agreement.

In the current tense climate, however, any Israeli construction for Jewish areas of east Jerusalem is potentially explosive.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed the area in a move that is not recognized internationally.

The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as their capital. They consider all Israeli construction there to be illegal settlement activity – a position that is backed by the international community.

About 200,000 Jewish Israelis live in developments such as Ramot that ring east Jerusalem to help cement Israeli control.

The Israeli announcement came before Kerry’s scheduled meeting in Jordan with King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the situation in Jerusalem. There was no immediate plan for Kerry to travel to Israel.

“We are deeply concerned by this decision, particularly given the tense situation in Jerusalem, as well as the unequivocal and unanimous position of the United States and others in the international community opposing

such construction in east Jerusalem,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in Washington.

“These decisions to expand construction have the potential to exacerbate this difficult situation on the ground, and they will not contribute to efforts to reduce the tension,” she added.

Under a longstanding arrangement, Jordan holds custodial rights over Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, including the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. It is the third-holiest site in Islam and the most sacred place in Judaism. Jews are permitted to visit, but prayer by non-Muslims is banned.

Increased visits by Jewish worshippers to the site, which also includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque, have raised concerns among Muslims that Israel is secretly trying to take it over.

The tensions have boiled over into violent demonstrations and deadly Palestinian attacks that have killed six people in recent weeks. The fatal shooting by police last weekend of an Israeli Arab protester in northern Israel as he appeared to be walking away from the officer has worsened the atmosphere.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that Israel has no plans to change the arrangements at the holy site, but his pledges have done little to bring calm.

Cosmic first: European spacecraft lands on comet

By FRANK JORDANS The Associated Press DARMSTADT, Germany – Landing with a bounce after traveling 4 billion miles, a European spacecraft made history Wednesday by successfully reaching the icy, dusty surface of a speeding comet – a cosmic first designed to answer big questions about the universe.

The landing by the washing machine-sized craft after a decade-long journey required immense precision, as even the slightest error could have resulted in stellar calamity.

Indications were that the spacecraft touched down almost perfectly, save for an unplanned bounce, said Stephan Ulamec, head of the lander operation.

“Today we didn’t just land once. We maybe even landed twice,” he said with a chuckle.

Ulamec said thrusters that were meant to push the lander, called Philae, onto the surface, and harpoons that would have anchored it to the comet failed to deploy properly. Initial data from the spacecraft indicated it lifted off again,

turned and then came to rest.

Scientists still were trying to fully understand what happened and whether those failures would affect the lander’s ability to remain on the comet, called 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. But so far, most of the instruments were working fine and sending back data as hoped, Ulamec said.

“Tomorrow morning we should know a lot more,” he said.

The landing team at mission control in Darmstadt had to sweat through a tense seven-hour wait that began when Philae dropped from the agency’s Rosetta space probe as both it and the comet hurtled through space at 41,000 mph.

During the lander’s descent, scientists were powerless to do anything but watch, because its vast distance from Earth – more than 300 million miles – made it impossible to send instructions in real time.

Finally, at 10:03 a.m. CST, they received a signal that the lander had touched down.

While it may take a while to determine the exact state of the 220-pound lander, the fact that it was resting on the sur-

face of the comet was already a huge success – the highlight of Rosetta’s decade-long mission to study comets and learn more about the origins of these celestial bodies.

The head of the European Space Agency underlined Europe’s pride in having achieved a unique first ahead of its U.S. counterpart, NASA. “We are the first to have done that, and that will stay forever,” said the European agency’s director-general, Jean-Jacques Dordain.

NASA contributed three instruments to the mission, and its Deep Space Network of giant radio antennas has been key to communicating with Rosetta.

Eight-time spacewalking astronaut John Grunsfeld, now associate administrator for science at NASA, called the landing “a breakthrough moment in the exploration of our solar system and a milestone for international cooperation.”

“The data collected by Rosetta will provide the scientific community, and the world, with a treasure-trove of data,” he said in a statement.

Indifference versus making a difference VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez “You are calling me from paradise to hell.”

Paul Bhatti recalls this comment from a phone conversation with his brother, Shahbaz, who later would be murdered for his insistence on speaking out against blasphemy laws in Pakistan.

Paul was living in Italy, the “paradise” as opposed to the “hell” of violence-torn Pakistan. But as bad as things got in that troubled land, his brother insisted: “The way to paradise lies in Pakistan.”

Shahbaz’s point was, as summed up by Bhatti: “Non-involvement is not an option; we are obligated being one human family to struggle for those who are too weak to speak and defend themselves.”

Bhatti writes about what inspired him to work for religious freedom in Pakistan — after his brother’s death in 2011 – in a new report on religious persecution throughout the world. Long story short: It’s on the upswing, and the rising “religious illiteracy” among Westerners isn’t helping matters.

At a recent conference on the plight of Christians in the Middle East sponsored by the Napa Institute, Siobhan Nash-Marshall, a philosophy professor at Manhattanville College in New York, told how she and a group of women founded the Christians in Need Foundation.

Among other things, they sponsor students from “ancient Christian communities” to study in American universities.

While we can’t, and shouldn’t, bring every persecuted Christian over here, we can start looking at their faces and listening to their stories, and so draw ourselves out of our indifference.

The “globalization of indifference” is how Pope Francis often puts that chief drawback of our unprecedented information age. As my friend Mollie Hemingway put it

recently in an essay on charity in a new collection from Templeton Press, “The Seven Deadly Virtues”: “When everyone’s your neighbor, then nobody’s your neighbor.”

We’re so overloaded and easily distracted now that we ignore the suffering going on around us, never mind in faraway regions.

For months, Christians have been murdered and driven out of Iraq and Syria by marauding Islamic State separatists. But it’s not the stuff of evening news; it hasn’t stopped us in our tracks. But it should.

Ghanem Yadago was forced to flee the family home in Northern Iraq with his wife and two sons. As if that weren’t enough, he found himself having “to ask people’s help for everything.” He’s blind, a casualty of the Iran-Iraq war and now is living in a tent outside a church, dependent upon others to help him navigate his surroundings.

Thanks to a facility for sick and elderly refugees funded by the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, Yadago now is a little more independent.

Sarkis Boghjalian, national director of Aid to the Church in Need, a Catholic charity group, urges Americans to pay attention to the plight of people such as the Yadago family. “Challenge your elected officials, ‘What are you doing for persecuted Christians?’ ” he said.

What does that challenge mean for any American reading this? Get creative. That’s what Father Benedict Kiely did. A Vermont priest with no particular skill set for such things, he sold 15,000 bracelets, lapel pins and zipper pulls adorned with the Arabic letter standing for “Nazarene,” with all proceeds going to ACN. Six weeks later, he gave the charity a check for $10,000.

Do we look away, or do we do something? Is indifference bliss or our highway to hell?

With honor and humility, I am writing the following true story about everyday heroes among seniors.

The seniors of today have substance and continuity. They are proud Americans with structure and direction.

They preserve the past for the next generation to embrace. Seniors bring history back to life every day with all their volunteer work.

Seniors have faced with courage adversity in the past and the present. They fought for our country in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and more. Seniors went through the Depression, bank failures and more. They always have respected their country, all races and all cultures.

Their motto is God, family and friends.

The seniors I have the privilege to know volun-

teer daily for Meals on Wheels, food shelters, crisis centers and The Salvation Army. They tutor children and volunteer at church and bake sales.

They help with the veterans Honor Flights, work in kitchens, information booths and hospice. They do not look for a thank you – they just do it.

In Romeoville, we have a Founder’s Day Parade each year. A heroic senior named Darlene has, for two years, put the parade (circus) together. Our village won two plaques (first place). This same senior has Stage 4 cancer.

She has perseverance and empowers everyone. She is a true hero and mentor.

Also another true hero was Florence Jacobson from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Romeoville, who developed polio while pregnant. She was choir director and did all of her own housework while seated in a wheelchair.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

She always had a smile for everyone. Another true hero. She was a great inspiration.

I am grateful to have known many senior heroes, past and present.

With golden years, seniors acquire experience and knowledge. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren need our stories.

We try to lead by example. Hopefully, we can leave a legacy for history to repeat.

We continue to guard and preserve our past. We all embrace the future.

FRANKFORT – While Lincoln-Way East football always seems to have a productive offense, it always has prided itself on the play of its defense.

That’s why, after a wild 43-40 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor during the regular season, Griffins coach Rob Zvonar wasn’t all that pleased, despite having a 4-1 record.

But after allowing 129 points in its initial five games (25.8 average), East picked things up defensively and yielded just 57 points during

its last six games (9.5 average).

The improved defense is a key reason why the 10-1 Griffins have advanced to Saturday’s 1 p.m. Class 7A quarterfinal game against 7-4 Mount Carmel at Gately Stadium in Chicago.

“We’ve been playing a lot better in the second half of the season,” linebacker Luke Epich said. “After the H-F game, we knew that if we could beat them, we could beat anybody. We had to make a name for ourselves and couldn’t let the offense carry us. We’re all buddies and grew up and played together. We’d like to be the first group to beat

Full-house backfield fits Morris to a ‘T’

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Throughout the season, the Morris football team has tinkered with various offensive formations. The Redskins have lined up in the “I,” the pistol, single-back spread and no-back spread, among others. However, in short-yardage situations or when they have absolutely needed to move the ball, the formation of choice has been the “T.” With running backs Jake Walker, Matt Feiden and Keagan Sobol lined up behind quarterback Griffin Sobol, that seems to be the formation that fits the Redskins to a “T.” “That’s a formation that has been at Morris since long before I got here,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said.

“And the kids just love it. They know that when we call ‘T,’ that we are going to pound it at the other team, and it gets them going.”

When Morris plays at Peoria (10-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday in an IHSA Class 5A quarterfinal, the Lions can expect to see the Redskins in the “T” more often than not.

And why not? It makes sense that the Redskins would have their best offensive threats all on the field at the same time.

While no single back has amassed eye-popping numbers, that fits in with the team aspect of the 2014 Redskins.

No one really cares who carries the ball or who scores, as long as the job gets done and they are ahead at end of the game.

Walker leads the team with 721 yards on 138 carries, followed by Keagan Sobol (110 carries for 616 yards), Griffin Sobol (102 carries for 575 yards) and Feiden (45 carries

The touchdowns are spread out, too; Griffin Sobol leads with eight, followed by Walker with seven and Keagan Sobol and Feiden with four apiece.

The diversity is what makes it dangerous.

“It has really helped us this year, because we don’t have the one big star that has a lot of yards,” Thorson said. “We don’t have a 1,000- or 1,500- or 2,000-yard runner. But, when you add up all four of our guys back there, they have more than 2,000. With the three running backs and the quarterback, there’s four legitimate threats to run the ball.”

The offensive line has been a strength all season and has gotten better in the last few weeks. Tackles Jackson Shannon and T.J Layne, guards Eric Haish and Michael Galifos, and center Zach Hansen have been the main five linemen, with Chase Hansen and Robbie Meucci rotating at tight end.

“That group has been outstanding,” Thorson said.

“They have definitely been one of the big reasons we have won our last five games.”

Meanwhile, the defensive line – with Layne, Zach Hansen, Andrew Faught and Shannon leading the way – has come up with big plays

the last few weeks as well. Not only have they put pressure on quarterbacks and made stops on running backs, but they also take up blockers and allow the linebackers to make plays as well.

“As a unit, this might be one of the best defensive lines we have had,” Thorson said.

“Again, there’s no big standout like Jamie Cumbie or Danny Friend; but as a whole, they have just done a great job. And that’s without Mark Lincoln, who was on his way to becoming what I think would have been an all-conference lineman.”

Still, Thorson knows that Peoria (10-1) will not be a push-

over.

“They have a lot of size up front,” he said. “And their defense swarms to the ball and is very quick. Offensively, they are very athletic. Their quarterback [Orlando Hernandez] is a good runner, and he can throw it well. Their running back [B.J. Harris] is an elusive runner, so we have to be prepared for that.

“You don’t get to the quarterfinals if you aren’t a good team. We have to be sure we take care of the ball and not make mental mistakes in coverage like we did a couple times last week. If we don’t beat ourselves, we should be OK.”

Bears defense now puts its focus on the Vikings, not the Packers

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Jared Allen settled in behind a microphone Wednesday afternoon and proceeded to ask a favor of those seated in front of him.

“Let’s talk about the Vikings,” Allen said. “I spent all yesterday answering Packer questions.”

As eager as the Bears defensive end was to shift the focus onto Sunday’s game against his former team, it was clear there were still questions to be answered. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker had spent the previous 15 minutes defending his defense, maintaining while a unit that has surrendered 106 points in its past two games understands it needs to be better, it didn’t make sense living in the past.

Apparently, in the brief seconds it took for Tucker and Allen to pass one another at Halas Hall, Allen got the memo that turning the page only made sense.

But four questions later, Allen was asked to play defense on behalf of Tucker, forcing him to address a topic he hoped to avoid.

“I don’t want to sound rude at all and I appreciate what everyone does in this room,” Allen said to a room full of reporters.

“Everybody’s got a job to do. But if we based our emotions and our feelings on what was written about us day-to-day, it would be the most stressful life in the world,” Allen said. “Goodness, we’d be king one day and we’d be dead the next.

“We have to focus on what we know and we know football.”

Lately, however, Allen and the rest of his teammates have had that fact questioned by fans and media alike. With the Bears coming off a 55-14 loss to the rival Packers Sunday night in Green Bay, outsiders suggested that someone had to be fired and that big changes needed to be made sooner rather than later.

On Wednesday, the day each week the defense is presented to the media, Tucker, Allen and linebacker Lance Briggs all made their case for the fact that they knew what has gone wrong this season and that re-hashing it didn’t do anyone inside Halas Hall any good.

“Right now, I’m focused on the Vikings,” Tucker said. “Being embarrassed, at this point, is not productive.”

As coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery have suggested before, Tucker said Wednesday he believes the talent exists inside Halas Hall to win. But for a unit that ranks 26th in the league in total yards, 31st in yards a play and 28th in passing yards, the problems ap-

pear to be bigger than Tucker let on.

He said that the same 11 defensive players that started against the Packers will start Sunday against the Vikings Sunday at Soldier Field. When asked what personnel had broken down on a pair of long Aaron Rodgers touchdown passes to Jordy Nelson, Tucker said he wasn’t the kind of a guy to throw any of his players under the bus.

But for a team that has now lost three straight games – giving up 50 points in each of the past two – taking ownership remains a talking point. Briggs said as much both Sunday night as he left the Bears locker room at Lambeau Field and Wednesday, when he said that when he goes back and watches games from his career, he’d likely skip Sunday night’s 39-point loss.

Allen said Wednesday that he and his defensive teammates have indeed talked about the changes they need to make. He chose not to share those conversations with reporters. But he acknowledged that change had be made both collectively and on an individual basis.

“Nothing’s going to be said to make somebody play,” Allen said. “You’re either self-motivated to be the best, you’re either embarrassed when you get your butt kicked and you want to go back out and prove yourself or you’re not,” Allen said. “That’s just the bottom line. This game is humbling. This game exposes people and it humbles you.”

Tucker says defense just wasn’t prepared

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – After announcing on Monday there are no immediate plans to shake up the coaching staff, the Bears on Wednesday essentially echoed those sentiments when it comes to their defensive personnel that was steamrolled Sunday night in one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history.

If changes abound, Mel Tucker kept them close to the vest in his weekly meeting with the media.

“There are always things we can change,” said Tucker. “There is nothing set in stone on the lineup.

But the group that we’re going to put out there we think will give us the best chance to win this game.

And so I will tell you right now, we plan on going in with the group that started the game.”

Tucker then admitted his defense wasn’t properly prepared – despite having the bye week and with their season hanging in the balance – for the massacre that occurred at Lambeau Field Sunday night.

“Obviously we were not prepared enough and our effort and everything we do needs to be better,” Tucker conceded.

When asked about the confusion that occurred on Jordy Nelson’s 73-yard touchdown, Tucker provided little clarity, refuting Tim Jennings’ assertion Sunday that a communication breakdown occurred.

“I’m not exactly sure what he’s talking about. The tape didn’t show that. We saw communication on a play that resulted in a touchdown and so that’s what I saw,” he said.

After point guard Derrick Rose raised some eyebrows with his comments following practice Tuesday, he declined addressing the media Wednesday to defend himself. He left that to coach Tom Thibodeau and veterans Mike Dunleavy and Pau Gasol.

They did so vehemently.

“At the end of the day, Derrick’s fully committed,’’ Dunleavy said. “I can speak on his behalf. He’s fully committed the way I see him working, the way I see him out there. Nobody should question that. It’s a little bit different viewpoint. But as far as his commitment to us, the city, the team, that should never be put in question.’’

It was 24 hours earlier as Rose discussed missing four of

the past six games with both ankles sprained.

“I know a lot of people get mad when they see me sit out,’’ Rose said. “But I think a lot of people don’t understand that when I sit out, it’s not because of this year. I’m thinking about long term. I’m thinking about after I’m done with basketball, having graduations to go to, having meetings to go to.’’

Dunleavy didn’t know about Rose’s comments. When informed of them, he said to a reporter, “You better have got that right,’’ acknowledging the seriousness of how it would look to the public.

“Like my man [Packers quarterback] Aaron Rodgers says, relax,’’ Dunleavy said. “I can see in his eyes and his commitment that’s what he wants.

Sometimes words get misconstrued or you catch somebody on a day where they say something that is maybe not fully … maybe people just don’t understand where the person is

coming from. Maybe that’s the case here. I can’t speak for Derrick for what he was saying, but I can speak for his commitment.’’

So could Gasol. Before signing with the Bulls this summer, Gasol reiterated that the most important phone call he had was with Rose.

“It was a critical part of my decision,’’ Gasol said. “He felt confident, he felt good about his health, about going forward, about how bad he wanted to win, and so that’s what I need to hear from him. I heard it from other people in the organization, but I needed to hear it from him before I made my decision, and so far the guy works, like I said, extremely hard.

“Comes back at nights sometimes to work out extra, puts in a lot of time after practice, so I like what I see. And when he plays, when he’s healthy, he’s been really aggressive and he’s a difference-maker.’’

By BEN WALKER The Associated Press NEW YORK – Everyone expected Clayton Kershaw to pitch a shutout, and he did – a unanimous choice for the NL Cy Young Award.

Corey Kluber edging out Felix Hernandez for the AL pitching prize, that was no sure thing.

Now, the big question: Is Kershaw the Most Valuable Player, too?

“I can’t even really fathom it happening,” Kershaw said on a conference call Wednesday, shortly after winning his third Cy Young in four seasons.

Kershaw led the majors in victories and ERA and threw a no-hitter, going 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA for the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 26-year-old lefty with a wicked curveball will find out

Thursday if he’s the first NL pitcher to sweep the MVP and Cy Young honors since Bob Gibson in 1968.

“I think a lot of things probably have to go right,” Kershaw said, adding, “there are so many people out there who don’t think a pitcher should win.”

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who won the NL MVP last year, and Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton are competing against Kershaw for honor.

“Everybody’s going to have an opinion” on the position player-vs.-pitcher debate, Kershaw said.

His thought? “I don’t really have an opinion either way,” he said, diplomatically.

“I think most valuable is such a tough thing to assess,” he said.

Kershaw won the Cy Young

for the second year in a row, getting all 30 first-place votes in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Johnny Cueto of Cincinnati was second with 112 points, followed by Adam Wainwright of St. Louis (97) and World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner of San Francisco (28).

Voting was completed before the postseason began. Kershaw went 0-2 with a 7.82 ERA in a Division Series loss to St. Louis, leaving him at 1-5 with a 5.12 ERA in his playoff career.

“For me, personally, the season didn’t end the way I wanted to,” Kershaw said.

Kluber’s dominant second half helped him draw 17 of 30 first-place votes and 169 points, while Seattle ace King Felix got 13 firsts and 159 points. Chris Sale of the White Sox was third with 78 points.

Joliet Catholic church has undergone many transformations, looks to future

These were the words the Rev. Michael Valente said he spoke to parishioners of the Church of St. Anthony, at 100 Scott St. in Joliet, when he came to the parish for the second time in 1974. Valente was appalled at the condition of the building – even pieces of the ceiling were cracking and breaking off.

“I thought, ‘My God, this is plaster. This will hurt these people,’ ” Valente said. “They had been given the opportunity to sell the building to the bank next door, which was making offers, but they insisted, ‘No, we want to stay here.

We want to repair it.’ ” Long a spiritual home to Italian Catholics, the Church of St. Anthony in downtown is a survivor that continually renews itself – and no one is more proud of showing off its emergence than Valente, its 83-year-old administrator, who effected many of its changes and has a vision for its future.

The stone building, formerly owned by First Baptist of Joliet, was built in 1858 for $8,000 Valente said. In 1902, 17 Italian families each pledged $1,000 and eventually bought the building for $14,000, he said.

“We had been guests in the basement of St. Mary Carmelite,” Valente said. “When we outgrew the basement, we had to buy our own building.”

The building that became the Church of St. Anthony, Valente said, was a solid, two-story structure – church on top, basement underneath, which was typical of practical Protestant construction of that time, he added.

“We never had a school, so we never needed anything more as far as land,” Valente said.

Nicholas Leonard, guidance counselor, has served as a counselor at both Pleasant Plains Middle School and Plains Prairie High School in Sangamon County. Leonard also plans to coach JCA’s basketball and baseball teams. Leonard has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Blackburn College and a master’s degree in school counseling and guidance from Lewis University.

He enjoys golf, working out, coaching and spending time with his family.

Laura Pahl, vice principal for curriculum and technology, has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Lewis University. Additionally, she has a master’s degree in education curriculum and instruction from Governors State University and a master’s degree in school leadership with a principal license from Concordia University. Pahl loves sports, especially the Bulls and Bears, going to new restaurants, hanging out with family and friends, board games and bonfires.

Claire Stockl, math and science teacher, has a bachelor’s degree in physics from Knox College and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois

at Champaign-Urbana. She recently obtained her secondary teaching certificate in physics from Lewis University. Stockl previously worked as an engineer designing nuclear power plants. Stockl enjoys yoga, gardening and watching sports.

Most of all, she loves spending time with her husband of 30 years, Dan, and their children, all who have attended JCA: Bruce (2005), Elise (2007), Darren (2012) and Seth (2014).

Mary Ann Worst, foreign language teacher, started her teaching career at Rosary Catholic High School in Aurora. She then taught at JCA for 25 years before retiring in 2007. When more Spanish sections were added this year, she returned.

Worst also works part time as a receptionist at Willow Falls, a senior assisted living facility. Worst graduated from Lewis University with a major in Spanish and minors in French and English. She has two daughters, Jenna Worst Ponio (Class of 1997) and Elise Worst.

JOLIET – The 25th annual Franciscan Autumn Feast benefiting the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate was held Oct. 19 at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion in Joliet. More than 270 people participated, including several prominent Joliet dignitaries who support the Sisters’ ministries and programs.

In her opening remarks, Sister Dolores Zemont, president of the congregation, noted that the Joliet Franciscan Congregation was established in 1865 and was founded by Mother Alfred Moes. It was the first Congregation of Franciscan women in Joliet and in the state of Illinois.

Through the years, her successors helped establish the following four prominent Franciscan Catholic institutions in the Joliet area – St. Francis Academy, now Joliet Catholic Academy; Assisi Junior College, now the University of St. Francis; Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home; and the Franciscan Learning Center.

Although the Sisters’ presence at these institutions has diminished over the years from fully staffing these establishments to primarily serving on their boards, they are happy that the legacy of the Joliet Franciscan Sisters continues.

Zemont presented each of the institutions with the Joliet Franciscan Heritage Award.

Zemont presented the Mother Alfred Moes Award to Guardian Angel Community Services. Guardian Angel Home was the first ministry established by the Sisters. The first Guardian Angel Home was built behind the Sisters’ motherhouse in 1867 to care for orphaned and neglected children. GACS is now a fully independent social service agency serving area residents and beyond.

As a result of the feast, the Congregation raised more than $45,000 for their Mission and Ministries including its retirement fund.

Male infertility has variety of causes Dear Doctor K: My wife and I have tried to get pregnant for over a year.

We’re going to be tested soon to see if anything is wrong. I’m worried that the problem lies with me.

What are some reasons for a man to be infertile?

Dear Reader: About one in seven couples in the United States is unable to conceive a child after trying for one year. The infertility is caused by either the man alone (about 40 percent of the time), by the woman alone (about 40 percent of the time) or by both partners (about 20 percent of the time). So it is possible that something about you is responsible for your wife’s difficulty with becoming pregnant.

Male infertility may be caused by a variety of problems: • Hormonal problems.

For example, low levels of testosterone (the main male hormone) or thyroid hormone.

• Problems with the testicles. These include abnormal growth or development, or damage from trauma and infections.

• Problems with the flow of sperm. This may include blocked tubes that transport sperm, or problems with ejaculation. (I’ve put an illustration showing the normal path of sperm through the male reproductive system on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

• Abnormal sperm function. This may affect the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg.

• Exposure to toxins.

Radiation, for example, or industrial chemicals.

• Medications and drugs. These include psychiatric medications, alcohol, and anabolic steroids used for bodybuilding.

Your evaluation will likely begin with a semen analysis. This test measures the amount and quality of your semen and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the number and quality of sperm. If your semen analysis is normal, you may not need further testing.

If your semen analysis is abnormal, your doctor will take a complete medical history and test your hormone levels. The doctor will also perform a physical exam. He or she will look for evidence of genital infections, blocked sperm tubules in the testes or shrinkage of the testicles.

Particularly if the physical examination indicates there is a problem, various tests often are ordered. You may need an ultrasound of the testicles and scrotum to picture any possible blockages. Your sperm may be tested. The role of the sperm is to swim toward a woman’s egg and to fertilize it. The ability of the sperm to swim in semen can be studied with a microscope. So can the ability of your sperm to penetrate a hamster egg.

If it can’t, it will likely not be able to penetrate a human egg.

Genetic tests may be performed. Several gene defects have been identified in recent years. Finally, a biopsy of the testicles may show any of several diseases that impair the production of sperm.

If there is a specific reason for your infertility, it may be possible to treat. If you have no treatment options, consider assisted-reproduction techniques, such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. Problems with fertility often have a solution -- with a healthy baby as a result.

Have a talk with your brother about this and suggest grief counseling for himself and his wife if they haven’t already had any. The poor woman may be planning to have the party out of guilt because she didn’t host one while her daughter was alive, or because her relationship with the girl wasn’t a good one. She may also be unable to accept that her child is gone and not thinking rationally. What a sad situation.

Dear Abby: My wife cleans our hand-held vacuum in the kitchen sink. I think this particular appliance is probably the dirtiest one in the house and should be cleaned outside, not in the kitchen sink where food is prepared.

Dear Abby: My four girls and I recently moved from Texas to Florida to help out my in-laws. My husband, “Jeff,” made a big deal about not wanting to move without a job, so he stayed behind.

Now I feel like a single parent, and even though I hide it from my daughters, I am depressed. I haven’t been able to find work, and Jeff says he doesn’t want to come here for several more months.

My husband and I have been together 14 years, and this is tearing me up inside.

He seems to be treating this issue as a joke. I suspect he likes not having the responsibility of a wife and kids.

Our youngest is 6 months old and she’s growing up without her daddy! Please help me figure this out. –
