Route 53 corridor study introduced

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Route 53 “wasn’t built” for the truck traffic born out of the last decade’s worth of development within the CenterPoint Properties’ intermodals, said Shannon Richards, of Elwood.

“You hear semis all the time blaring their horns, running through red lights,” Richards said, pointing to her home’s location on an oversized map of Route 53 laid across tables Tuesday night at the VFW Stone City in Joliet. “It’s a dangerous road. If you go out there right now, you’ll see skid marks all over the road.”

Richards isn’t alone in her observation.

The Elwood resident was among the 150-plus homeowners, business leaders and other stakeholders who attended Tuesday night’s public meeting hosted by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The belief that Route 53 cannot handle the growing traffic volumes is, in part, why IDOT has hired the Chicago-based engineering firm Clark Dietz for $250,000 in “start-up” costs to assess problem areas and possible intersection and turn lane improvements along the arterial north-south highway.

The meeting allowed people to weigh in on the ongoing study, which is in the “data collection” stage, said John Baczek, section chief of IDOT’s project and environ-

mental studies.

Baczek said the study will help IDOT determine the next steps for improving safety along Route 53. Rear-end and turning collisions were among the predominant crash types along this highway stretch from 2009 to 2013, according to IDOT data. Of the 423 crashes that occurred, 140 resulted in injury.

IDOT entered into a $250,000 agreement in January with Clark Dietz to conduct the study’s beginning stages, said phase I project manager Stacie Dovalovsky, with Clark Dietz. That includes data collection, public meetings, and the creation of the community advisory group and subsequent group meetings, she said.

Clark Dietz and IDOT will negotiate a contract for additional services in early 2016, Dovalovsky added.

Joliet Junior College recognizes former board chairman Jeff May

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A former chairman of the Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees returned to the college to receive special recognition.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, Jeff May came to receive two plaques for his work in the past 15 years with the community college. May served as board chairman this year until he resigned in late July for health reasons.

May said at the time he resigned that he had a minor stroke and was advised by his doctor to resign to reduce his stress.

“This is nice closure. …

I still think it was the right decision,” May said. “Health comes first and my health is going fine and I’m planning the next chapter of my life and enjoying it.”

May received two plaques at the meeting. One recognized his outstanding service to res-

idents of JJC District 525. The other recognized his outstanding leadership.

“He just put a lot of time in and he cares about Joliet Junior College, and I know it hurt him to move away from this position and at the same time he had to do what’s right for his health,” said Michael O’Connell, a board trustee.

May has been active on community college issues both statewide and nationally by serving as president of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association and board member with the Association of Community College Trustees.

Since May resigned, the board went through several changes in membership, as two more members – Tina Markley and Barb Adams – resigned unexpectedly.

May’s seat was filled by Daniel O’Connell, who served on the board previously. Alicia Morales and Patricia Deiters were selected by the board to

fill the seats of Markley and Adams.

May said he still plans on coming to ribbon-cutting ceremonies on the facilities being built.

JJC has moved forward on several projects, including the City Center campus interior work, Multipurpose Facility construction and Romeoville campus expansion.

“As a board we put a lot time and effort into planning facilities that are being built and I have a lot of pride in those accomplishments and I can’t wait to see those buildings in operation,” he said.

He said he was glad to see Daniel O’Connell appointed to his seat. He also welcomed the new trustees to the board.

“I know you’re going to enjoy it. … Over the 15 years I formed a lot of relationships around here and around the state and around the country and I know that’s in store for you, too. I want to wish you all the best of luck,” he said.

Dennis O’Connor, who owns two 10-acre plots of land at Route 53 and Ira Morgan Road, said he’s concerned about many unknowns – such as what changes could result along Route 53. He said he worries IDOT will opt to build a new east entryway into the intermodals.

“I don’t want the trucks, the carcinogen diesel fuel ... and all this will do is add more truck traffic,” O’Connor said.

The study also was initiated, in part, because of the January closure of a controversial railroad crossing in Elwood, which eliminated one of the key access points into the CenterPoint Intermodal complex that crosses into both Joliet and Elwood.

Mark Schneidewind, manager for the Will County Farm Bureau, said grain haulers need another entryway into the intermodals.

Peter ‘Benny’ Papesh is last surviving brother in family of 7 veterans Papesh, the youngest of the seven brothers, ran the family’s local tavern for about 15 years. He also worked for Caterpillar for a little more than five years, and helped manage the park and cemetery for St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Papesh also said he was a state liquor commissioner for 19 years and played the accordion in shows throughout 17 states, Canada and Slovenia.

“They were all a great bunch of brothers,” said Papesh’s wife, Theresa. “They went and did their duties.”

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – To this day, Peter Papesh flies seven flags in his yard – a symbol of honor and remembrance of his family’s service to the country.

His World War II experience put him on the Pacific Ocean during his years of service in 1944 and 1945. He served as an Army technician in the amphibious engineering regiment in the south Pacific area, training with ship and aircraft rescue boats in the jungles of Zamboanga on the Philippines island of Mindanao.

And when the two historic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, Papesh, born and raised in Joliet, was on the front lines.

But he wasn’t alone.

Papesh’s six older brothers also served, with a Papesh in almost every arena of the war.

Seven brothers

Papesh, now 89, clutched one of his most prized possessions – a silk-set framed memorial painting showing the headshot photos of the seven brothers around an image of a bald eagle and U.S. flag with their last name inscribed on a gold border – when he told his World War II story.

The Papesh brothers grew up in Joliet on Broadway Street. But they were spread around the world during the war. While 407,316 U.S. soldiers died in the war, all the Papesh brothers survived.

“This is something that I’m proud of and that the family is proud of,” Papesh said. “We were all drafted, and we just did what we were supposed to do.”

The oldest brother, Mike, served in the Philippines. Papesh said he doesn’t know too much about Mike because he almost was a generation older.

But he does know Mike moved to Indianapolis and worked as

a pipefitter in a pharmaceutical company after the war.

Second in line, Albert campaigned in Africa through Italy with two injuries, one serious. When Albert came home, he worked at Joliet Pattern Works.

“He suffered the most,” Papesh said. “But he didn’t lose a hand or a leg. He always went back into action.”

The third brother, Stephen, served in France and Belgium but started working in Cleveland before the war.

Brother Joe, like Albert, stayed home after serving in New Zealand. He helped build homes as a carpenter in Joliet and Rockdale.

George joined older brother Stephen in Belgium during the war, and both played a part in

the invasion of Normandy. After the war, George worked at the American Seed & Oil Company for most of his life.

Ralph also served in the Pacific and joined Papesh in Okinawa during the invasion.

“He was more or less a politician all his life,” Papesh said, noting Ralph was a local precinct committeeman who ran for several public offices and once jumped in front of John F. Kennedy’s motorcade to urge the young campaigning presidential candidate to meet the family in Joliet.

World War II was a completely different setting than some of the more modern wars, such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“When I went in with the infantry, they gave us cold clothes in the cold weather,” Papesh said. “We never knew how the war was going.”

The seven brothers also were almost completely unable to communicate back home or to each other, a stark contrast from the phone and video calls afforded to soldiers today.

“What you see today is so much different,” Papesh said.

“When I came back, they had a little party in the backyard.

Today, they go away from six to eight months and they’re honored very well.”

The brothers’ parents were proud of their sons’ service, although Papesh’s mother died in 1942 before he started serving.

She collected news clippings and knew in what part of the world her sons were fighting.

Papesh said his Slovenian immigrant father, John, didn’t want him to join.

“My father took it like a man,” Papesh said. “But I was the last one. I could have gotten out and I could have refused to go. But I told him, ‘No.’ ” Much of Papesh’s wartime

Trustees hire building inspection contractor

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – A new contractor that will help Shorewood’s plan review and inspections has been approved by the village board to take over those services from an existing contractor that has staff increasingly frustrated.

A contract with HR Green Inc., which has an office in New Lenox, was unanimously accepted by the Village Board Tuesday night.

The contract sets standard hourly rates of $200 for structural engineer, $175 for chief building official and licensed architect, $112 for an ICC certified plan reviewer, $78 for an ICC building inspector, $78 for a licensed IDPH plumbing inspector, $130 for a project engineer, $105 for a landscape architect and $65 for a permit coordinator.

About 2.5 years ago, village staff hired Hoffman Estates-based B&F Technical Code Services for the same scope of services. But recently, officials say B&F hasn’t produced a good “work product.”

“At this time, we’re not getting service out of that firm,” Village Administrator Roger Barrowman said, noting B&F told the village the company is going through some changes and handling more clients.

James said among the issues B&F were communication problems, invoicing

errors and general inconsistencies with service.

Other firms considered were Keslin Engineering, TPI Building Code Consultants and the International Code Council. However, Keslin wouldn’t provide professional insurance or plumbing inspections, TPI has longer review times and had less than favorable peer reviews and the ICC review services but no inspections.

The village used to have two inspectors, but currently it’s down to one. And while that inspector is in the process of receiving more certifications for inspection services, he is limited and can’t keep up with the pace of inspection requests coming in, James said.

James said finding another inspector has been tough during the past two years.

“We had less than 10 applications come in, two of which had any certifications at all,” she said.

James also said the 500 inspections a month the village is conducting likely will decrease during the winter months, allowing the village’s inspector to catch up with the help of HR Green.

Goldfish Swim School opens in Plainfield

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The new Goldfish Swim School in Plainfield looks like an underwater Caribbean cove from the inside, in contrast to the external appearance of the industrial warehouse it now occupies.

“The way it’s designed, it’s kid-friendly with a tropical paradise theme,” owner Randall Barba said.

Goldfish is a swimming school designed for children ages 6 months to 12 years. The school is unique because very few swimming facilities focus primarily on swimming lessons, Barba said.

The swim school at 12315 Rhea Drive in Plainfield officially opened its doors Thursday. But staff joined the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce in recognizing the opening Tuesday morning.

A grand opening Sunday attracted about 500 people, Barba said.

The school is the second opened by Barba in the area.

He owns another swim school in Naperville.

“The process behind the Naperville location was very arduous, but Plainfield was very good,” Barba said, thanking the village for its help.

During a Nov. 18, 2014 meeting, trustees received confirmation from Barba that the facility would only be used for swimming lessons. But when the ordinances came up for approval a couple weeks later, some trustees were upset at the inclusion of parties at the facility.

“I think the real situation was a miscommunication,” Barba said. “I think it was more of a clarification that 98 percent of our business is teaching swim lessons. But we also offer birthday parties on Saturdays and Sundays. That’s it.”

So far, the school has been a hit, Barba said.

“We’re servicing all of Plainfield and Bolingbrook,” he said. “There really is no standalone swim school in Plainfield.”

Federal highway bill could help Will County

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The long-term highway bill approved last week by the U.S. House includes funding for freight projects, and that could be good for Will County, local congressional members said.

The bill, which still has to be worked out with the Senate, would be the first highway spending measure in nearly a decade to promise funding for more than a twoyear period.

That, combined with a new fund aimed at easing the movement of freight across the country, could help officials make plans for big projects.

Two big local plans in need of funding are widening Interstate 80 through Joliet and building a Houbolt Road bridge over the Des Plaines River in Joliet to carry CenterPoint Intermodal traffic straight to I-80.

“Those are definitely the type of projects that would be eligible for this funding,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs. His district includes sections of northeastern Will County.

Lipinski will be on a conference committee created to reconcile differences between the House and Senate highway bills. Although there are differences, both are six-year funding measures and both include designated freight transportation funds.

How much Will County benefits, however, depends on legislators’ ability to bring home money.

The $325 billion spending measure does not include

specific projects yet.

Also missing from both the House and Senate bills is a way to pay for the full six years. The House bill only authorizes six years if Congress can find a way to pay for the final three years of the funding measure. The Senate bill only pays for three years.

in past highway spending, said U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, whose district includes Will County and most of Joliet.

Foster said one victory in this spending bill is that his Payer State Amendment will be applied to show how many tax dollars are coming back to Illinois. Foster said the for-

mula applied in 2013 showed the average citizen in Illinois got $89 worth of federal highway spending compared to $609 in Alaska.

“The average citizen in Illinois is getting rooked on both the spending side and the taxing side,” he said.

Foster said he expects the formula to lead to a fairer distribution of highway spending.

He also said the designated freight fund could help turn I-80 widening and a Houbolt Road bridge into a reality because Will County will be in a better position to compete for funding.

A six-year funding measure is important, Foster said.

“Now there’s an ability to make long-term plans,” he said. “We can look at funding for long-term projects like adding lanes to I-80 and building the Houbolt Road bridge.”

The House bill provides almost $4.5 billion for the freight program, which also includes money for railroad grade separations.

The Will County Center for Economic Development has lobbied in Washington for a freight program, CEO John Greuling said.

“I think that’s extremely important for Will County,” Greuling said. “Projects like widening I-80 and maybe the Houbolt Road bridge are projects that we can characterize as having national significance because of their importance in moving freight across the country.”

Prosecutors: Murder charges follow fatal Joliet stabbing

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed murder charges against the man authorities have accused of stabbing a Joliet man in a street brawl Sunday night.

Rudy Val- Rodolfo dez, 25, died Trujillo Monday afternoon at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Rodolfo Trujillo, 19, of Joliet initially was Oracio Loera charged with attempted murder and mob action Sunday after witnesses told authorities they saw him holding a knife while fighting Valdez. Oracio Loera, 20, of

Joliet also has been charged with mob action, according to state’s attorney’s spokesman Charles Pelkie.

“We reviewed the appropriate charges [since the victim’s death] and filed two counts of first-degree murder,” Pelkie said Tuesday.

Police were called about 10 p.m. Sunday to a fight in the 2900 block of Reflection Court in Joliet and found Valdez unresponsive in a nearby yard.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said an autopsy performed Tuesday showed Valdez died of multiple stab wounds.

“Trujillo was upset with the victim over a $40 purchase of bad marijuana,” Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Monday.

Police said a 19-year-old friend of the suspects was stabbed accidentally during the street fight and fled the scene in a Jeep that crashed

LOCAL BRIEFS Teen shot Sunday

JOLIET – A 15-year-old boy was shot Sunday in the Des Plaines Garden Homes basketball courts in Joliet. Deputy Joliet Police Chief Ed Gregory said the teen, who lives in the area, suffered a wound to the right shoulder that was not life-threatening.

At 4:04 p.m., officers went to the housing authority basketball courts at 390 Water St. when gunfire was reported.

At 4:16 p.m., staff called police to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center after the boy came in to the emergency room.

“He said he’d been standing on the court when a guy fired a shot from a passing car on McDonough Street, but couldn’t describe the car or the shooter,” Gregory said. “The victim said he has no problems with anyone and doesn’t know why he was shot.”

Trujillo was found guilty in a 2014 shoplifting incident in Romeoville after failing to appear in court, according to court records. He also was ticketed earlier this year for traffic violations in Shorewood and Plainfield.

by Channahon police for having a small amount of marijuana.

He also was cited by Shorewood police earlier this year for improperly using a cellphone while driving. According to jail records, Valdez was arrested on charges of identity theft in 2013 by Joliet police, domestic battery and criminal trespass to vehicles in 2013 by Romeoville police, and vandalism and driving with a suspended license in 2011 by Bolingbrook police.

Joliet police: Teens rob youth of drug money

JOLIET – Police said two teens robbed another of a large amount of cash he told them

he was going to use to buy marijuana.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said the robbery occurred Sunday afternoon when the 14-year-old victim met with Tyrell J. Beavers, 18, and a 17-year-old boy at Bazz and Ruth Fitzgerald drives.

“Through investigation we learned the victim told them he was going to buy weed and they said they would get him a better deal,” Gregory said.

“When the boy pulled out a wad of $725, Beavers put him in a choke hold and the 17-year-old took the cash and they fled.”

Police were called at 5:45 p.m. and officers found Beavers and the 17-year-old in the 2500 block of Mirage Avenue, according to Gregory.

Beavers, of the 2800 block of Adobe Drive in Plainfield, was arrested on charges of robbery and battery and booked into the Will County jail. The 17-year-old was booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

JOLIET – Mr. Brown got months, not the years that his rescuers wanted. But they were good months, said Chris Ulreich.

Ulreich and her family fostered Mr. Brown, a German shepherd mix with three legs that had cancer and had been an abused dog when he was taken in by Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue in July.

Mr. Brown died Monday.

“One week ago today, we

had him out for a walk, and was romping through the leaves,” Ulreich said Tuesday. “We’re all heartbroken.”

Mr. Brown got a lot of attention in the last months of his life.

The plan was to add a few years to his life through medical treatment, which included chemotherapy. Mr. Brown also generated a lot of interest on his Facebook page.

More than 22,000 people viewed the Facebook post that Mr. Brown had died and nearly 400 commented, while more

than 100 people shared the post.

“He touched a lot of lives. A lot of tears were shed,” Ulreich said.

Mr. Brown, believed to be 4 or 5 years old, had been dropped off at Chicago Animal Control before Hopeful Tails brought him to Joliet. He had a lame leg, scars on the face, a cut ear and hair matted with gum – all signs of abuse.

The leg had to be amputated, and a biopsy showed he had soft tissue sarcoma, which had spread to the lungs.

Hopeful Tails has raised

about $2,000 to pay Mr. Brown’s medical bills, which totaled about $6,000, Ulreich said.

“We said he was worth

every penny of it,” she said, “considering that the first four years of his life were not what they should have been.”

Homeless veterans in Joliet receive housing assistance

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet will get nearly $149,000 worth of federal vouchers to provide housing for homeless veterans.

The money will fund 17 vouchers that HAJ plans to use at Hope Manor Joliet, the veterans housing project being developed by Volunteers of America Illinois.

“This is in conjunction with a partnership that we have with Volunteers of America,” HAJ CEO Michael Simelton

said.

HAJ is providing the vouchers, and VOA provides a variety of services, including employment training, family counseling and peer support, Simelton said.

Hope Manor is scheduled to be built in the coming year at the old Silver Cross Hospital campus in Joliet.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Tuesday announced the vouchers, a joint project with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The partnering VA medical

facility for the Joliet vouchers is Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center, which has a health clinic at the old Silver Cross Hospital campus.

HAJ is one of two public housing agencies in Illinois to get the vouchers. HUD also announced 40 vouchers with a value of $295,000 being awarded to the Housing Authority of Cook County.

The vouchers provide homeless veterans and their families with access to affordable housing with support services, according to a news release from HUD.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet police: Stray bullet crosses freeway, strikes house

JOLIET – Police believe a bullet fired into the closet of a Joliet home was a stray shot from weekend target practice on the other side of the freeway.

At 9:56 p.m. Monday, a resident of the 3000 block of Bloomfield Drive noticed a bullet hole in an upstairs closet and told her husband, who found a spent bullet lying next to the closet door, Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

Gregory said the couple denied hearing any shots. But a review of police calls in the area found Joliet and Will County Sheriff’s police had been called Sunday to property in the 2700 block of Mound Road where shots were heard. The property is in an unincorporated area across Interstate 80 from the couple’s home.

“Our officers responded with sheriff’s police to find subjects were shooting into a berm. They had valid firearm owner’s identification cards,” Gregory said.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said it appears deputies did not file a report during Sunday’s incident since no crime had been committed.

Gregory said.

Sanchez, of the 700 block of Ann Street, was arrested and booked into the Will County Jail on charges of delivery of marijuana and marijuana possession.

An 18-year-old woman who was Sanchez’s passenger was released without being charged.

Gregory said police seized the Grand Prix following Sanchez’s arrest.

Police: Joliet man had marijuana in car

JOLIET – Police said a missing headlight stopped people Monday from getting lit.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said at 10:54 p.m. an officer noticed the headlamp was out on a red 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix and stopped the vehicle at Campbell Street Victor M. Sanchez and Barney Drive.

“As the officer approached, the driver rolled down the window and he could smell the odor of cannabis coming out,” Gregory said.

Victor M. Sanchez, 19, admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle and police found several baggies in a laptop case on the floor behind the passenger seat,

Q: Does diabetes cause hearing loss?

A: Diabetes does not necessarily cause hearing loss however diabetes and hearing loss are two of America’s most widespread health concerns. According to the American Diabetes Association a recent study found that hearing loss is twice as common in people with diabetes as it is in those who don’t have the disease.

Of the 79 million adults in the U.S. who have prediabetes, the rate of hearing loss is 30 percent higher than in those with normal blood glucose. While we don’t know exactly how diabetes is related to hearing loss, it is possible that the high blood glucose levels cause damage to the small blood vessels in the inner ear, much the same way it can damage the eyes and kidneys.

More research needs to be done. November is National Diabetes Month and a good time to get your hearing checked.

How would you treat an ankle sprain?

Foot and ankle injuries happen to all of us from time to time. Although it is sometimes hard to tell how serious an injury is at first, here is an easy guide to use until you can reach a doctor.

R.I.C.E. stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. First, the body must be allowed to recuperate, and that calls for rest. Second, forget the heating pad, at least at first. Ice applied immediately after an injury and for several days following constricts blood vessels, reducing swelling and pain. Third, compression with a bandage also reduces swelling, as well as immobilizing the area. Finally, elevating the foot above the heart prevents blood from pooling around the injury. By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Village Board has approved the construction of a new campus of the Orland Park-based Parkview Christian Church.

Board trustees present Monday night unanimously approved annexation, rezoning and special use requests

by H & K Partnership to build a 30,000-square-foot, 615-seat church on a portion of the 80acre Deer Point South lot at the southwest corner of Laraway and Schoolhouse roads.

The church will be built on 8 acres in the middle portion of the land parcel, which

is zoned for commercial use in the north along Laraway Road and residential use in the south along Illini Drive but has been undeveloped since an annexation agreement was approved by the village in 2005.

The issue has come up for discussion at the board meetings in the past several weeks as the board tried to ascertain how traffic would be controlled in the area during the church’s Saturday and Sunday services. The board was concerned for any disturbance for the residents of the Sky Harbor subdivision across from the proposed site, which only has one access road to Schoolhouse Road.

Several residents had

expressed concerns at the board’s Sept. 28 meeting, citing high traffic at the Orland Park campus – which has about 1,900 seats – and calls also had been made to board members.

Mayor Tim Baldermann and the trustees seemed satisfied at the Oct. 26 meeting after a provision was added to the special-use request that the village would have sole discretion to determine if police would be needed to control traffic at the expense of the church.

The developer also will add dedicated left and right turn lanes on northbound Schoolhouse Road to Laraway Road.

tor, the Rev. Bill Brown, also had assured the board at that meeting that there would be no future expansion of the church.

Baldermann and trustee David Smith said they since had spoken to residents on the phone who also are now satisfied with the agreement.

“We wish you very well,” Baldermann said. “It will be a great addition to our community.”

The developer must bring final site, engineering and landscaping plans to the board for approval before construction can begin.

OBITUARIES CAROL L. DELEHANTY Carol L. Delehanty (née Wisniewski), passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Carol is survived by her husband of nearly 34 years, Charles J. Delehanty; as well as by her first husband, Martin Pavelek with whom she had her children. Carol is also survived by her daughters, Christine (Gregory) Offerman and Kimberly (Dwayne) Killian; her grandchildren, Zachary and Matthew Offerman and Dwayne Killian; and her cousin and best friend, Judy Kump. Carol had two step children, Charles M. and Christopher Delehanty; a step-sister, Constance Kohl; and five step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, James Delehanty.

Carol was preceded in death by her mother, Ann Wisniewski; two daughters in early infancy; her father, Peter Wisniewski; and her step-mother, Catherine. Also preceding her in death was her step-sister, Gertrude McDowell; and her In-Laws, Stanley and Beverly Delehanty.

Carol was born in Joliet, Illinois and remained a life-long area resident. She was employed at Argonne National Laboratory, and United Cerebral Palsy of Joliet before settling in as a busy housewife for the past thirty years. Her family was always the most important aspect of her life, but the friends she made over the years were important as well. Friends like Lorraine, Ray, Rita, Nancy, Margo, Jean, and Dolores all held a very special place in her heart.

Carol was grateful for the kind and caring neighbors we have enjoyed over the years, both at our previous residence and at our current location.

Over the years Carol and her husband Charles were able to share many wonderful memories and embark on numerous trips, but Carol would always remind us that the best trips she took were those that simply allowed her to be with her children.

Carol’s family would like to offer our sincere thanks to the Doctors and Staff at both Joliet Oncology and Hematology Association (JOHA) as well as at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Their kind and caring approach to Carol and her family members helped make the journey easier for everyone.

Born August 10, 1925, in Yorkville, OH, she was the daughter of Dominick and Ada Spong. Sue was the owner and operator of Sue’s Beauty Shop on Richards Street for many years, where many of her customers became lifelong friends. She was also known for her green thumb and her beautiful yard and flowers were enjoyed by many. Sue was an incredible baker, seamstress, and a creative and talented artist.

Thomas E. Staley, age 88. At rest Sunday, November 8, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at Sunny Hill Nursing Home.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated from Creighton Prep High School. After high school, he played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and later with the New York Giant organization. He joined the Navy in November 1944, serving in the South Pacific. After service, he went to college and graduated from St. Ambrose in 1950 and later the University of Illinois.

In Davenport, IA, Tom met Colleen Lemley and was married for 62 wonderful years. Their marriage produced two beautiful children, Candace and Michael. In 1956, Tom and family moved to Joliet to join his father in the family business, Staley’s Home Furnishings. He left the furniture

business to begin teaching in the Troy School District, where he later served as Principal of Troy Shorewood School, where he made many good friends. He retired in 1990. After retiring, Tom spent his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his family home in Wisconsin, and watching his beloved Chicago Cubs.

Survived by one son, Michael Staley (Karla Wojcik) of Joliet; five grandchildren: Vanessa (Mark) Schmitt of Chicago, Carrie (Corey) Hromek of Joliet, Lauren (Ed) Ferry of Joliet, Joshua Mancuso and Andrew Mancuso, of Joliet; four great-grandchildren, Mia and Christian Hromek, Matthew Ferry, and Max Schmitt; one brother, Donald in Sarasota, FL; one niece, Denise Werner; six nephews, Mark Werner, Doug, Denny, Pete, Todd and Tom DeDecker; and many cousins and close friends Tom made over the years.

CHICAGO – The death of a 9-year-old boy who was killed in an alleged gang execution marks “a new low” for Chicago, a priest said Tuesday during the boy’s funeral.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan were among the hundreds attending the funeral of Tyshawn Lee at St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church, where the boy’s body rested in a small, red casket. Tyshawn was shot in the head Nov. 2 in an alley as he was headed to his grandmother’s house in a neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

During Tuesday’s service, the Rev. Michael Pfleger said the boy’s death is a wake-up call for the city.

“A baby was executed,” Pfleger said. “We have gone to a new low that’s removed what used to be some codes, some barriers, some lines that used to be drawn in the community, some things in our city that were not acceptable.”

Snow, tornadoes expected for central U.S.

NORMAN, Okla. – Forecasters say a mixture of bad weather including heavy snow and tornadoes is expected as a strong storm system plows toward the central U.S. from the Rocky Mountains.

A blizzard warning was issued for Tuesday night and Wednesday in the Great Plains east of Denver, while tornadoes and high winds could rake parts of the Midwest

on Wednesday.

Northeastern Colorado and western Kansas and Nebraska should expect 6 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 60 mph overnight – a combination that can cause white-out conditions.

The Storm Prediction Center said an area from Nebraska to Illinois might face high winds, large hail and tornadoes Wednesday.

High court appeal of immigration case comes mid-campaign

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration said Tuesday it will ask the Supreme Court to save its plans to shield from deportation millions of immigrants living in the country illegally. The appeal advances a legal confrontation with 26 states during a presidential race already roiled by disputes over U.S. immigration policy.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals late Monday effectively blocked President Barack Obama’s plan to protect as many as 5 million immigrants, primarily the immigrant parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents. It upheld a Texas-based federal judge’s earlier injunction.

The ruling leaves in limbo the future of Deferred Action for Parents and Americans, and promises by Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton to go further than Obama to protect large groups of immigrants from deportation.

Feisty Bush seeks to regain his footing in GOP debate

By JULIE PACE and JULIE BYKOWICZ The Associated Press MILWAUKEE – A feisty Jeb Bush sought to regain his footing in Tuesday’s Republican presidential debate, challenging President Barack Obama’s economic record and criticizing Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton for pledging to build on his policies.

“It may be the best Hillary Clinton can do, but it’s not the best America can do,” said Bush, who is attempting a campaign reset after a sluggish start to his bid for the GOP nomination.

The debate opened with a narrow focus on economic policy, with moderators from Fox Business News allowing the candidates to deliver lengthy answers. There was little interaction among the candidates at first, and the moderators didn’t attempt to get them to engage each other, a notable shift after Republicans criticized the aggressiveness of the hosts in the last debate.

That didn’t last, however. Billionaire businessman Donald Trump and Ohio Gov. John Kasich went after each other aggressively when the

subject of immigration came up – Trump insisting anew that 11 million or more immigrants in the country illegally be removed – and former Florida Gov. Bush chimed in, as well.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson entered the debate facing questions about the veracity of his celebrated biography, which has been at the center of his connection with voters.

Carson pushed back on the questions and suggested the media were harder on him than Clinton.

“We should vet all candidates,” Carson said. “I have no problem with being vetted.

What I do have a problem with is being lied about.”

While pieces of Carson’s background had been challenged earlier in the campaign, the questions ballooned last week after CNN reported it could not find friends or confidants to corroborate the story, told in his widely read autobiography, of his attempt to stab a close friend when he was a teenager.

The debate, the last for the GOP until mid-December, could help shape the course of the campaign into the winter as voters begin to pay more attention to the White House

race.

Drawing a sharp contrast with Democrats, the candidates voiced opposition to raising the federal minimum wage, casting it as an impediment to job growth.

“If you raise the minimum you’re going to make people more expensive than a machine,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said.

Trump concurred. “We cannot do this if we’re going to compete with the rest of the world,” he said.

Democratic front-runner Clinton has called for raising the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $12. Her chief rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, has backed an increase to $15.

Trump has led the field for months, defying standard political logic, while experienced governors and senators have struggled to break through.

Carson, another outsider, has begun challenging Trump’s hold on the GOP contest.

The debate could be crucial for Bush. The former Florida governor has sought to interject early, reminding moderators he had limited time in the last debate two weeks ago.

“I happen to be reading the paper and there was a Japanese man – he had good English – who owned a shipyard and asked what I was reading,” Papesh said. “It was a Herald-News article with all the brothers’ photos and names in it. He said it was nice and asked to take it and show his wife.”

Papesh gave the paper to the man on the condition the man return it. But after several meetings during the next week, the man didn’t bring the paper back, despite Pa-

pesh repeatedly asking for it. A week later, the shipyard owner handed Papesh the silk painting bearing the pictures of his family – the same one Papesh prizes and displays in the center of a wall at his home.

“I asked him, ‘Here, you’re a Japanese and you’re doing this for an American.’ He said that he owned the shipyard his whole life. And the Japanese put him in a prison because he wouldn’t build a ship to fight the Americans,” Papesh said.

“That was just amazing.”

SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner positioned himself as flexible in an 18-week budget standoff with legislative Democrats for a second day on Tuesday, this time reversing his position on a measure to free up already-collected tax dollars for distribution to cities for emergency services and lottery winners.

A memo released Tuesday from Rauner’s deputy chief of staff Richard Goldberg indicates the first-year governor will support the legislation the House plans to consider.

It would release $1.9 billion in money collected through motor fuel tax to cities, wireless phone taxes to emergency-dispatch centers, lottery fund money to winners, and more. Rauner went so far as to suggest adding money for safety and other programs.

“To further strengthen the progress made over the last few days, legislators can – and should – fund the public safety and critical services excluded from [the legislation], including salt for snow-covered roads, funds for veterans in state-run homes and debt service payments that would ensure Illinois avoids a debt default,” Goldberg wrote.

More than one day needed to honor vets’ sacrifices

The birth of Veterans Day can be traced to Nov. 11, 1918.

That’s the day World War I fighting between the Allied nations and Germany ended after an armistice went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, bringing to a close “the war to end all wars.”

World War I, of course, was not the war to end all wars. Rather, it ushered in modern warfare and all the carnage associated with it. In the aftermath of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 Armi-

stice Day. The idea of the day was to celebrate the end of a war so horrible that many thought such hostility never again would engulf humankind.

The men who had served the nation deserved to be recognized.

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of

the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations,” Wilson said.

It was not until later, after World War II, that Armistice Day became Veterans Day. The change was made during President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration in 1954. By then, it was clear such cruelty always would exist and, periodically, men and women would be called to battle to defend freedom and combat tyranny.

It was best the holiday be

all-encompassing and not focus on one conflict.

As this Veterans Day arrives, we mark this day with deepest gratitude and respect for our military veterans who, along with their families, have sacrificed so much to answer the call of duty.

It is good to set aside a day to honor these selfless, courageous people who served their country with honor, knowing the ultimate sacrifice is a possible outcome. In schools, parks, Legion halls, government buildings and elsewhere throughout Will and Grundy

counties, the nation and U.S. military installations around the world, speeches will be made and solemn prayers offered.

Really, however, one day is not enough. To all who serve, all who ever have served, and the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives after dedicating them to the greater good, we thank you.

Just as your example of toil and service to your country endures for months, years or even lifelong careers, please know our gratitude extends well beyond this special day.

Honor our veterans by removing barriers they face On this Veterans Day, I hope you will join me and honor our veterans who have given so much for our country.

In every conflict, they have answered the call to service, sacrifice and commitment. In doing so, we have a remained a free nation.

After they courageously fought to uphold our values and principles, it is crucial our nation prioritize our service members by facilitating a smooth transition for veterans.

While post-Sept. 11 unemployment rates for veterans have gone down considerably, there still are barriers for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who are seeking jobs.

All too often, veterans are well-qualified for civilian jobs, but face obstacles in meeting the civilian requirements.

For example, military-trained medics are required to take classes they already have completed in the military to satisfy the current civilian licensure system, needlessly delaying their entry into the civilian workforce of emergency medic technicians (EMTs).

That is why I reintroduced a bipartisan bill that would help

Many other skill areas are taught to our soldiers, sailors and airmen that have similar applications in the civilian workplace, but there is no system in place to facilitate the wide range of training learned during their time in service to the private sector.

In addition to helping our veterans renter the workforce, we need to take care of those who suffer from mental health issues and post-traumatic stress disorder. The staggering reality is that the annual suicide rate of veterans is roughly 50 percent higher than the rate among other civilians with similar demographic characteristics. I was proud to support the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, bipartisan legislation to help ensure resources are available to help prevent

these tragedies. While this is progress, we still have a long way to go.

As a member of Congress, I work every day to ensure policies coming out of Washington are taking care of our military men and women – including simplifying their transition to civilian life, improving mental health care services, and ensuring the Department of Veterans Affairs can adequately provide the volume and quality of care our veterans deserve.

Similarly, I am pleased to support legislation that creates new opportunities for our veterans and their families. I also

believe we must continue to work to protect our veterans’ personal information and help veterans who are most in need.

That is why I have voted for bills that incentivize businesses to hire veterans and that make veteran small business ownership easier. Additionally, I supported legislation that provides a solution to streamline veteran identification, making it easier for veterans to get the services they need and better protecting them from identify theft, and enhances the government’s initiative to end veteran homelessness.

debt to our veterans, and I am committed to doing anything I can to ensure veterans receive the most successful and effective care they more than deserve. If you plan to challenge someone to a game of H-O-RS-E, you may want to stay away from Daymeann Stewart and the rest of the Joliet Junior College Wolves.

The sophomore guard was on fire Tuesday night, hitting

5 of 6 shots from 3-point range in the first half and 7 of 10 for the game. He also hit all six free throws and closed with 29 points as JJC destroyed Prairie State, 80-37.

Stewart topped off his night with five assists and two steals. Yet it was anything but a one-man show.

The pressure defense of the Wolves (4-0) was stifling.

Prairie State (0-4) shot 22 per-

cent on 12 of 54 and committed 23 turnovers. Sixteen of the turnovers came in a first half where JJC’s defense created one scoring opportunity after another.

Often, that opportunity meant another 3-pointer. The Wolves hit 13 of 22 from long range in the opening 20 minutes and 16 of 34 for the game.

“Daymeann [Stewart] obviously had a great game,” JJC

coach Joe Kuhn said. “Last year, we had Daymeann shooting 3s well and maybe one other guy. This year we have been shooting well as a team.

Maybe not like this. You’re obviously not going to do much better than 13 of 22 in a half.”

Lewis works to get past UW Parkside

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Whenever a team has several young players competing, there’s always the potential for a lot of moments of drama and intrigue.

Such has frequently been the case for Lewis University’s women’s volleyball team this season, as is evidenced by seven of its previous nine matches going five sets.

The Flyers looked as if they were headed toward a similar scenario in Tuesday’s regular season home finale with the University of Wisconsin Parkside.

Lewis won at Parkside on Oct. 6 in five sets after dropping the first two, and the Rangers hoped to return the favor this time around.

But even though they trailed in three of the four sets, the Flyers managed to rally to claim a 26-24, 25-23, 2325, 26-24 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at Neil Carey

Arena.

The victory improves coach Lorelee Smith’s 18thranked Flyers to 25-4 overall and 13-3 in the GLVC while Parkside fell to 19-9 and 10-6 on the season.

“I guess it’s been a monkey on our back,” Smith said.

“When we play clean, we get ahead by a lot, and then we go four or five points and make a ton of errors, and that’s been a really big focus of ours the last couple of weeks. Today was better than last week; but at this time of the year, even with us having a lot of freshmen and sophomores, we need to step it up.

“Some individual players, like Elizabeth Hyland, were much better today than she was two weeks ago, but then a couple of others dropped off.

But we are 25-4, and we have two freshman setters and a freshman outside and a sophomore out there. And the two people that are playing all the way around all of the time have never played all the way

around in college volleyball until this year.

“It’s right to hold a team to a high standard, but for the past three weeks I also didn’t give them credit for when they were doing things good, and they’re doing a lot of good things.”

In the finale, the Rangers held a 16-12 lead before the Flyers rallied to move ahead, 21-19. Lewis led by two on two more occasions, but Parkside also forced two ties, with the last being at 24 on a kill by Lincoln-Way Central graduate Jackie Langer (12 kills).

But the Flyers benefited from a serve into the net and a long kill attempt to pull out the fourth-straight two-point decision of the match, with its other two coming early on.

Leading the way for Lewis was Plainfield Central graduate Hyland. The freshman outside hitter finished with a match-high 17 kills and added 14 digs. She hit at a .500 clip and only had two hitting errors.

“I think we’re still definitely working on team chemistry since we are so young,” Hyland said. “But something that this team has always been good at is coming back and never giving up. We never stop working, even in practice, and that shows in games like this. I think as we keep building our team chemistry, we’ll get better and the mistakes will decrease.

“I definitely have refocused and been working on things a lot, and I improved from my last game. I think what I’ve been working on definitely showed in this game, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of my team and my coaches. I like how we’re always there for each other on and off the court; it’s just like we’re a family.”

Parkside led, 20-16, in the third set, but Lewis got a kill from Lockport graduate Alexis Davito (nine kills) and a block from Aly Schneider (15 kills) and Hyland to pull to

within 20-19.

The Flyers moved ahead, 23-22, following a kill by Maddie Seliga (12 kills, 14 digs) but the Rangers scored the final three points, with two on kills by Rebecca Roembke (16 kills).

Things looked good for Lewis in the second set after it built up a 20-14 advantage.

But the Rangers answered with a 4-0 run, thanks to three service points from Langer, to close to within 20-18. After back-to-back kills by Roembke and Langer closed the gap to 24-23, the Flyers finally prevailed when Parkside was called for a net violation.

In the opener, Parkside grabbed a 21-18 lead but the Flyers stormed back behind three kills from Schneider, a shared block by Davito and Schneider and an ace from Abby Becker (22 assists, 11 digs) for the last point. Lewis’ Nicole Yuede led all players with 24 kills while McKenna Pierson added 23 assists and 14 digs.

“Our defense has been good all year, but tonight was better than it’s been,” Kuhn said. “The game was dictated by our effort. Shooting will come and go, but defensive intensity, defensive pressure, is something that is sustainable.”

JJC played without forward John Campbell (Lockport), who is nursing a sprained ankle. Kuhn said he probably will return Saturday when the Wolves host Lake Michigan at 3 p.m.

“That one will be a good test,” Kuhn said. “Lake Michigan typically is an overtime game.”

Tuesday’s game was tied at 5 after a sluggish opening five minutes.

‘But then it began to rain 3s at the west basket of Wills Gymnasium. Twelve of the 13 JJC baskets from beyond the arc came in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

Speaking to Kuhn’s point about how a variety of Wolves can shoot the 3, Stewart was 5 of 6, Wells 3 of 4, and Kiwane Crowder 2 of 4 in the half. Hund, Justin Williams and Robbie Brooks (Plainfield Central) also hit 3-pointers in the opening half, which ended with JJC on top, 51-17.

The Wolves’ largest lead was 48 points, 76-28, with 9:23 remaining. Incredibly, considering how the night unfolded, JJC managed only four points the rest of the way. Yet, the defense continued to operate.

MINOOKA – It took 37 years, but the Joliet area has at team state champion in girls cross country.

The Minooka Indians completed the process Saturday in what many are saying was one of the fastest Class 3A girls race in history. Not only was the individual state record time set –15:53 by Naperville North’s Judy Pendergast – but a record 78 runners broke 18 minutes.

Indians coach Kevin Gummerson reflected on the long road to the top.

“In 2002, it was the first time we qualified, and we finished 30th out of 30 teams,” he said.

“We finally flipped those results – from last to first. It has been a long road, and everyone who has competed for the team over the years is a big part of this.”

With five returning runners from the 2014 sixth-place state team, expectations were high entering this season.

“We had huge expectations,” Gummerson said.

“When we won the Hornet Red Devil Invite at Hinsdale in early September, that was a huge moment during the season. We beat some pretty good teams, and this really got these girls believing that could have something pretty special this season.

“We were confident all season long. Late in the season,

the Indians’ fifth runner on the day.

“I felt like I was behind, so I knew I had to pass people,” she said. “I’m so happy and excited.

“I never thought as a freshman that I would be on the varsity. This whole season has been a surprise for me, and I’m already looking forward to next year. Coach always tells us to have enthusiasm and run that way.”

The leader up front for Minooka has been junior Ashley Tutt. The winner of the Southwest Prairie, regional and sectionals titles, she earned her second all-state honor with a fourth-place finish Saturday.

“My season went really well,” Tutt said. “We all had a good start to the season, and we kept it going. I’m so happy for everyone. We really have worked hard for this.”

The lone senior among the top seven was Morgan Crouch.

The Louisville recruit placed 60th in Peoria and has been an inspiration all season.

“The girls talked about how they wanted to win a trophy for Morgan,” Gummerson said.

“We are going to miss her.”

“I saw the awards when I was a freshman at the state meet, and all I wanted was to win a team trophy,” Crouch said. “Then we got all these talented runners, and we really worked hard. It was such a

Bolingbrook’s Borland, Patrick ready for next level

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – While a college signing day at a local high school might be a formality, it still is a special occasion for the athletes, their families and friends – and Tuesday’s event at Bolingbrook was no different.

After Brittney Patrick signed on the dotted line to continue her basketball career at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Tuf Borland did the same concerning his future in football at the Ohio State University, the pair posed for pictures with family members, teammates and coaches as they got the chance to enjoy an honor few athletes experience.

Borland, a dominating linebacker regarded as one of the top recruits in the country, had several big-time offers, but opted for a program that’s the defending NCAA champion and has one of the richest histories in the sport. He chose OSU instead of his dad’s alma mater, Wisconsin, as well as schools such as Michigan State, Northwestern and Missouri.

“Ohio State is a great program with a great history,

so it’s really an honor and a blessing to be able to go to play at a place like that,” Borland said. “I definitely feel very fortunate. I want to thank my family, since my mom and dad were always around; and I also want to thank my trainer, who I’ve been with since I was in seventh grade.

“I feel good about how I did at Bolingbrook. But that really just reflects on the people that we have around our program.

Our coaches have done a great job, and I can’t thank our players and coaches enough for my development here, so I feel extremely lucky. I’ve just tried to get better every single day to prepare myself, and now I’m just ready to work.”

Borland will graduate at midyear, which allows him to get more familiar with the campus in Columbus before beginning his career in coach Urban Meyer’s powerhouse program.

“I liked the great balance between the football program, academics and the social life there, so I couldn’t go wrong,” Borland said. “I plan to major in kinesiology, and they have people around the football program who have been there and done that. So there will be peo-

“They have great group of guys who are extremely close and tight-knit, and that shows with their play on the field.

There’s great people there, and I’m excited for the opportunity and ready to go. I want to finish out strong in my last few weeks of school and get ready to go.”

Raiders coach John Ivlow is excited that another one of his athletes gets the opportunity to compete for a major program, and to see his first player who

will become a Buckeye.

“We’re starting to have guys who are going to new places, and Tuf’s our first guy at Ohio State,” Ivlow said. “For four years, we’ve watched him play, and he competed as a freshman on the varsity and never backed down or got pushed around. He’s just one of those special guys that comes around every 10 years.

It’s just been a blessing for us all of these years.”

As for Patrick’s college decision, the Raiders guard recently was won by the Salukis

after she made a campus visit to the downstate school.

“I visited about two weeks ago, and when I went there, I fell completely in love with it,” Patrick said. “It was just amazing. All of the coaches and players and the campus, it was just wonderful, and I just saw myself as being able to make that as my home. It felt like family there, so I’m glad that I made the right decision.

“I was also looking at a lot of out-of-state schools but I didn’t really want to go that far and wanted to stay near to my family. I think it’s about the right distance, it’s not that far away. Now, I don’t have to worry about my decision, and I can just have fun this year and enjoy.”

Patrick feels fortunate to get the chance to continue her career at the next level.

“My coach has been coaching me since fifth grade with AAU and stuff, and my dad has been coaching me since I was little,” Patrick said. “I’ve had so much support from everyone. My mom has driven me to games, and my little sister has come to my games. I’ve been working hard at this my whole life, so it feels good to know that it’s finally paid off.”

“The first mile was my fastest ever in a cross country race. The first mile you run with your legs, the second with the mind and the third with your heart. This legitimized who we are. So many people said, ‘Oh, you’re just Minooka.’”

Sophomore Emily Ellis and freshman Katelyn Gall rounded out the Indians’ top seven. Ellis ran in her second consecutive state meet.

“Being a sophomore, I knew what to expect this entire season, especially at the state meet,” Ellis said. “This is so great.”

“The state meet was a great experience,” Gall said. “During the race, I was just doing every-

thing I could to help the team.”

Gummerson comes from a storied family background, with both grandfather Roy and father Ron inducted into the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Roy was honored in the first class in 1977, while Ron was honored in 2002.

“I learned from both my grandfather and father,” Gummerson said. “My grandfather loved this sport, my dad had a tremendous impact on people, and I have been told they would both be proud of me and that really means a lot to me. These girls made this happen.”

The long road taken, the process complete and the results flipped.

“We are going to enjoy this – the state series is such a stressful situation,” Gummerson said.

“This has been a blast.”

“This team had more accomplishments along the way than last year, since they had actually won two tournaments (Pontiac and Oswego),” Scheibe said. “I think the thing with this team is that we were missing that spark for a lot of the season that Mary Murphy brought last year. I don’t think the spark has necessarily come from one person, but every single one of them has found that little bit of spark, and it’s encouraging the others.”

WENDY’S FINALIST

Lemont’s Campos cited: Lemont senior cross country and track distance runner Taylor Campos is among 10 national finalists for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Campos has represented Lemont in state final four times and has a grade-point average of better than 4.5 while taking the most difficult courses her school offers. She is one of two students in Lemont history to achieve a perfect score of 36 on the ACT and is a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.

JOLIET – While very proud of what her Joliet Catholic girls volleyball teams have achieved in recent years, coach Christine Scheibe prefers not to be in the limelight.

But although Scheibe is quick to spread the credit around to many individuals who have played a hand in JCA’s success at the state level, the leader of the program for 16 years obviously has been recognized for the quality teams she has put on the court.

With its supersectional victory Saturday over De La Salle, JCA assured itself of its eighth state trophy in the past 13 seasons under Scheibe. Her eight state trophies are tied for fifth place among coaches all-time and puts her in a tie for third among active coaches.

St. Francis’ Peg Kopec (19) and Mt. Pulaski’s Donna Dulle (12) have won more state trophies among active coaches, while Breese Central’s Jim Cook is tied with Scheibe with eight.

Two former coaches, Breese Mater Dei’s Fred Rakers (14) and Mother McAuley’s Nancy Pedersen (13), are the only other individuals from Illinois with more state trophies.

In addition, Scheibe became the first local female coach to win eight trophies and the first individual from the area to have that many top-four finishes while coaching a girls sport.

“It’s a new experience each time that you go down there, because it’s a new group of girls every time,” Scheibe said. “It feeds itself because these girls don’t want to let down the program, and the more success that’s come before them, I think that they feel some of that pressure. But they also have great role models who’ve played ahead of them, and they’ve seen what can be done by those who came before them, and they just want to also do that.

“I think our tradition is not just with the girls who are here at this time. On Saturday night, there were several eighth-graders who I know are coming into our program next year who are setting their sights on doing the same thing. Also, over the course of the season, we’ve had parents in the stands from almost every one of the teams that I’ve coached. And I got an email from a member of the 2008 championship team. That all plays into that ‘You’re not just here for your four years – it’s a lifetime thing that you

Houston’s sacks help Jay Cutler, offense Bears finish Chargers excel in crunch time

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The theme was simple and obvious. Back-to-back collapses on defense led to back-to-back divisional losses. And there the Bears’ defense stood, with a three-point lead, thanks to another sensational effort by Jay Cutler, facing the league’s top passing offense.

“I think guys were just finishing, fighting to finish and not giving up. That was the theme of the week,” Bears outside linebacker Lamarr Houston said. “Our first couple games off the bye, we didn’t finish. We were very close to getting some wins. Coach (John) Fox put an emphasis on finishing this week, and that’s what we did.”

To be more specific, that’s what Houston did. He sacked Rivers on first and second down, helping set up a fourth-and-23, the final play of the game for San Diego.

The defense held – finished – in a 22-19 win to improve to 3-5 on the season. “[Finishing] was the only thing going through my mind,” said nickel cornerback Bryce Callahan. “We needed a ‘W.’ It was up to the defense to get us off the field.

That was the only thing on my mind, to get off the field no matter what.”

Houston had an offside penalty between the two sacks, but it put San Diego well behind the sticks. Tracy Porter’s pass breakup on third down set up the final play, a desperation heave from Rivers that fell incomplete.

Asked how it felt to get the two sacks, Houston – the high-priced free agent of 2014 who had yet to make an impact in 2015, then had four QB hits Monday night – referred to the team, and the theme.

“It felt good to get a win,” he said. “It felt good to close out a game, play four quarters as a team and get a victory as a defense.”

Undrafted rookie Jonathan Anderson, the defensive play-caller on the night, said he went back to his college days at TCU to help get in a zone. “I just tuned it out,” he said. “I was focusing on that offense, that 11, going against them. “ … That’s our theme, to finish. That’s been our mindset. There are games that we haven’t finished as a defense, and I feel like we finished today.”

The stats show a unit that not only stepped up on the final drive, but came through after halftime. The Chargers had 207 yards in the first half and 11 first downs, converting 5 of 7 first downs. In the second half, they were held to 132 yards of offense, eight first downs and a 2-for-6 rate on third down.

NFL suspends Fabuluje 4 games for taking PEDs

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com The NFL has suspended Bears rookie OT Tayo Fabuluje for four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

“I was recently informed that I tested positive for an amphetamine after taking a supplement that did not list any banned substances on the label,” Fabuluje said Tayo Tuesday in a statement Fabuluje released by the Bears.

“As a result, I will be serving a four-game suspension. Although it was not intentional, and I would never knowingly take a banned substance, I recognize that I am ultimately responsible as an NFL player for everything that goes in my body. I sincerely apologize to my teammates, the Chicago Bears organization and our fans, and can’t wait to come back and contribute to my team.”

The sixth-round TCU product is eligible to return in Week 14. He won’t be paid during his ban.

Fabuluje was active in the four games Jermon Bushrod missed with injuries, but with Bushrod back and serving as the swing tackle Monday night, Fabuluje didn’t dress. who was a near unstoppable 16 of 22 before the break, was 10 of 20 passing in the second half. Melvin Gordon had four carries for 6 yards.

“We were confident. I felt really good,” defensive tackle Mitch Unrein said. “Everyone on the sidelines had a great mindset going into that last drive. Defense stepped up. Lamarr Houston made two incredible sacks. He just went off there in the last couple of plays. That’s all it takes.

It takes a play here or there and that’s the difference in the game.”

Those impact plays were missing against Detroit and Minnesota, but the Bears got them Monday night at Qualcomm Stadium. They didn’t just get close – they finished.

Jay Cutler: How many times in past seasons have we seen Cutler wilt after giving the ball away?

On Monday, he overcame two first-half turnovers, not injuries to his supporting cast, to dazzle while leading three touchdown drives of at least 80 yards – including two in the fourth quarter. He was especially brilliant on third down, completing 5 of 6 chances after intermission and making a number of special throws stationary and on the move.

Tip of the hat here to the tight ends. Zach Miller’s ridiculous touchdown will garner praise, but his run blocking was excellent. Martellus Bennett not only caught the first touchdown, but he also showed more juice postcatch after openly lamenting his role. Also, we could put Alshon Jeffery in here weekly, but he began the game poorly before catching fire.

Jeremy Langford: What didn’t

Langford show in his first crack at being the guy? Power inside, speed to the perimeter, sensational ball skills as a receiver, a nose for the end zone – they were all on clear display. And the part I left out was the one that impressed me the most: The rookie was extremely sound in pass protection, stoning several third-down blitzers.

Lamarr Houston: Say what you will about San Diego’s O-line, but that was its one consistent member, RT Joe Barksdale, Houston wasted on the Bolts’ failed final drive. His two sacks more than offset his two offsides; Houston was the Bears’ most impactful rusher, showing power we’ve grown accustomed to only seeing from Pernell McPhee. After just four snaps two games ago, can Houston use this performance as a springboard?

In his third start, Willie Young also played his best game, showing power and relentlessness while helping the Bears finally take advantage of a woeful opposing O-line.

Second-half ‘D’: Might this represent a turning point for Vic Fangio’s group? After two games

in which it seemed to run out of gas late in the fourth quarter, the Bears showed they could finish.

From Tracy Porter’s final pass breakup to the increasingly effective OLB pressure to Christian Jones and Jonathan Anderson tightening underneath space, this was a strong, collective outing.

FOUR-DOWN TERRITORY

Robbie Gould: Gould was swishing everything the first five games, but he’s hit a lull, following up a miss in Minnesota with an 0-for-2 – just the second of his career – in San Diego. With the Bears’ past six games having been decided by a combined 12 points, the need for their typically reliable kicker to steady is paramount.

Jarvis Jenkins: The only time he’s come close to the quarterback in recent weeks, he missed a shot at Teddy Bridgewater and committed a horrible roughing penalty on Philip Rivers that gifted San Diego three points.

Jermon Bushrod/Alan Ball: Active for the first time since Week Three, Bushrod’s spectating role confirmed what we’ve all been predicting: The offense’s second-highest-paid player is now a backup. Ball, who lost his starting job similarly – initially because injury, then a backup seizing his opportunity – fared decently in a larger role against a clearly hobbled Antonio Gates, but he whiffed badly on a open-field tackle of Danny Woodhead that helped the Chargers to points.

Kyle Long: We’re nitpicking here. Long was effective as a blocker, but he had two penalties, including one for unsportsmanlike conduct when coming to Cutler’s defense following a late hit that might have knocked the Bears out of field-goal range.

Love his intensity, but would love it more without it becoming a detriment.

GOAL TO GO

This is the first time the Bears have short rest to prepare for an opponent, and not just any opponent – one of the NFL’s toughest and talented, coming off a crushing loss. Can the Bears quickly recuperate after an emotional victory to beat the Rams and notch their first road winning streak?

Games show Barrett gives Ohio State different look at QB; will start vs. Illini

By CRAIG MERZ The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio – Urban Meyer spent the past two months saying that the Ohio State offense operates the same whether Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett is the starting quarterback.

He’s changed his mind after nine games.

“I felt a little different (about it),” Meyer said. “Probably more so now as the season’s gone on than I did earlier in the year.”

He made the revelation after the No. 2 Buckeyes beat Minnesota, 28-14, on Saturday, when Jones played for the suspended Barrett. Barrett was disciplined by the team for receiving a citation for driving while impaired on Oct. 31.

While Ohio State (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten, No. 3 CFP) totaled 376 yards, Jones did not shine. The Buckeyes scored only three offensive touchdowns, punted their first four possessions and were 2 for 4 in the red zone.

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will issue weekly rankings each Tuesday, with the final rankings being announced Dec. 6. The playoff semifinals will match the No. 1 seed vs. the No. 4 seed, and No. 2 will face No. 3. The semifinals will be at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31. Barrett is more like former quarterback-turned hybrid back Braxton Miller in the way he gets around the edge and breaks long runs.

“J.T., as you look back, his history is of the more quick-hitting and a little more Braxton style,” Meyer said.

CHICAGO – The White Sox have hired former Cubs manager Rick Renteria as their bench coach.

Renteria managed the young Cubs to 73 wins in 2014. The North Siders were planning to bring him back for a second season before Joe Maddon became available.

The Cubs jumped at the chance to hire one of the game’s top managers, and that resulted in an awkward split with Renteria.

“I don’t think we treated him entirely fairly,” Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Tuesday. “What happened was based on circumstances. Obviously, we’re thrilled with Joe. We had a wonderful year, but

Ricky deserved better and I’m glad he gets a chance with the White Sox.” The Cubs won 97 games and reached the NL Championship Series with Maddon, slugger Anthony Rizzo, rookies Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber, and ace Jake Arrieta leading the way.

The Sox reached out to Renteria about joining the organization about a year ago, but general manager Rick Hahn said the timing “was not right.”

With Mark Parent being let go as bench coach following this season, it created an opening.

The Sox began the year with high expectations after making some splashy moves, only to finish fourth in the AL Central with 76 wins. They have three straight losing seasons and are 297-351 in four years under

Turkey is a given, but the rest of the menu can vary by family preferences, traditions

Sausage and Grape Stuffing

It’s hard to argue that a stuffed bird is more beautiful and flavorful, but it renders the dish unfit for any vegetarians at the table. So we advocate having it both ways. Make up one giant batch of stuffing, then use part of it to stuff your bird while popping the rest into a well-buttered baking dish. The trick to keeping the stuffed stuffing safe to consume is to make sure it reaches 165 degrees F. at the center. We’ve got a master recipe for classic bread stuffing, as well as four ways to adulterate it most deliciously.

Classic Stuffing

Start to finish: 40 minutes Servings: 8

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 large yellow onion, diced 3 ribs celery, diced 2 cups low-sodium chicken or turkey broth (or vegetable if making some or all of the stuffing vegetarian-friendly) 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary 8 cups toasted or stale bread (cut into 1-inch cubes)

Deviled Mashed Potatoes

Are you the sort of person who insists Thanksgiving mashed potatoes only can be served straight up buttery, or are you willing to allow room for a little creative adulteration in the name of bigger, bolder flavor? Either way, we’ve got you covered. We started by creating a master recipe for basic, buttery-creamy mashed potatoes that are delicious just as they are.

But in case you’re the type who gives thanks for the wild side of things, we also offer you six ways to jazz up our basic recipe.

Perfect Mashed Potatoes Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 10

5 pounds potatoes, peeled or not, cut into 1-inch chunks Kosher salt ¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, room temperature 1 to 1½ cups half-and-half, warmed Ground white pepper

Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Butter a large baking pan or casserole dish (such as a 9-inchby-13-inch baking pan).

In a large deep skillet over medium, melt the butter. Add the onion and celery and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the onion is translucent and tender. Add the broth, salt, pepper, sage, thyme and rosemary. Bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat and gently stir in the bread cubes. If desired, reserve some for stuffing the turkey. Transfer the remaining mixture to the prepared baking dish and bake for 20 minutes, or until the top is toasted.

Stuffing that is cooked in the bird must reach 165 degrees F. by the end of cooking. Use an instant thermometer inserted into the center of the stuffing to get an accurate reading. Stuffing that is cooked in a baking dish should be drizzled with pan drippings from the roast turkey just before serving (unless it is intended for vegetarians).

Place the cut potatoes in a large pot, then add enough cool water to cover by at least 1 inch. Stir in 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to maintain a simmer. Cover and cook until the potatoes are very tender and a fork penetrates them easily. Timing will vary by potato variety, but should take between 10 and 15 minutes. Be careful not to let the potatoes cook beyond this point; you want them tender, not totally broken down.

Drain well in a colander, then return the potatoes to the pot. Set the pot over medium heat and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, shaking the pan now and again, to cook off excess moisture. Remove from the heat and mash.

Once the potatoes are mashed to your liking, stir in the butter and 1 cup of the warmed half-and-half. If you like a wetter mashed potato, add the additional halfand-half. Season with salt and white pepper. Serve or use a variation at right.

Is it time to wait or to hunt actively?

Sylvia Plath, a poet, novelist and short-story writer who died in 1963, said, “I have the choice of being constantly active and happy or introspectively passive and sad.”

Bridge defenders have to decide whether to be active – positively trying to win tricks – or passive – sitting back and waiting for declarer to lose tricks.

If they adopt the correct approach on any given deal, they will be happy.

In this deal, East has the decision to make. South is in four spades. West leads the heart three, and East wins with his king. How should he plan the defense?

Some Wests would have jumped to four hearts, arguing that with 10 trumps, get to the 10-trick level. But with no singleton, this seems too much to me. Note, though, that his threeheart raise was pre-emptive. With a good hand, he would have cue-bid two spades.

If East judges it is right to defend passively, he should continue with the heart ace. Here, though, South would ruff in the dummy, draw two rounds of trumps ending in his hand, and take the club finesse. It would lose, but he could claim four spades, one diamond, four clubs and one heart ruff.

East should realize that dummy’s club suit is threatening to provide declarer with a host of tricks. East must shift immediately to a low diamond.

Here, West will put in his nine to force out dummy’s queen. South takes his top trumps and tries the club finesse.

East wins and plays another diamond.

have created iPS cells to study what goes wrong in certain diseases, and what treatments would be effective. Take Parkinson’s disease, for example. The cells that die in a person with Parkinson’s disease lie deep in the brain. You can’t just reach in and study them.

But you can take a skin cell from a patient with Parkinson’s disease and turn it into an iPS cell. You can transform that iPS cell into the type of brain cell that dies in Parkinson’s disease.

Then you can see what medicines keep that cell from dying. This is being done today, for many diseases.

Of course, I’ve made this remarkable new technique sound simpler and freer of potential complications than it really is.

Certain ways of creating iPS cells possibly could turn the cells cancerous. But new discoveries are reducing or eliminating that risk.

Also, the technique still is quite inefficient and cumbersome, but new discoveries are making it simpler. Still, it will be some time before this new type of stem cell therapy affects medical practice in a major way.

Perhaps this remarkable breakthrough will achieve its full potential in helping us to understand and cure diseases.

If so, it will show again how society benefits when we support the work of curious and talented scientists who seek to understand the basic processes of life.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I said, theoretically, embryonic stem cells could be used to replace cells that are killed by disease – heart cells killed in a heart attack, for example, or brain cells killed by Alzheimer’s disease. If you needed stem cells, what you ideally would want were your own embryonic stem cells.

The dilemma: Your own stem cells existed only briefly, long ago, and you couldn’t turn back the clock. That is, until a research breakthrough in 2007 showed you could.

As we discussed yesterday, embryonic stem cells and all the specialized cells have exactly the same genes within them. However, cells in the eye and stomach, for example, are so very different because different genes are turned on in each type of cell. A Japanese research team decided to see if a unique group of genes was turned on in embryonic stem cells. There were.

Then they asked an audacious question: What would happen if you placed into a fully specialized cell – like a cell in the skin – the activated genes seen in embryonic stem cells? The answer was so remarkable it was honored with the Nobel Prize. The skin cell turned into a cell (called an iPS cell) very much like that person’s long-lost embryonic stem cells. You could turn back the clock.

Since this discovery, scientists have been experimenting with using iPS cells to cure disease in animals.

For example, iPS cells created from skin cells in mice have been transformed into specialized healthy blood and nerve cells – curing the mice of the equivalent of sickle cell anemia and Parkinson’s disease.

Dear Abby: I’m a mostly happily married wife and mother. I love tattoos. When I was younger, I was engaged to my soul mate. His name is tattooed on my wrists in honor of the love we shared.

Unfortunately, he was killed in a car accident.

The tattoos are in no way disrespectful to your husband.

They are the same body art you had when he married you, and if he didn’t complain back then, he shouldn’t now.

When you’re fighting and Brett tells you to get rid of them, he’s doing it to hurt you because he knows they are meaningful and he’s trying to get under your skin. Insist on dealing with the subject at hand and don’t take the bait.

Dear Abby: I’d like to know if there’s any way to stop my mother-in-law from inviting herself to every birthday party and graduation our children have. They are pre-teen and teenagers now.

She has done this for years, and it often doesn’t end well.

When she barges in, for your own sake tune her complaining out. Walk away if you must. As to altering the sleeping arrangements to suit an uninvited guest – don’t do it.

Where is your husband in all of this? She’s his mother; if you can’t make her see reason, then he should. It’s normal for teens to want to celebrate with their contemporaries – and Grandma had better get used to it before they turn tail and run whenever they see her coming.
