Teachers picket school board meeting

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP – More than 200 teachers lined the entrance and perimeter of Crystal Lawns Elementary School Monday evening chanting slogans of less testing and more classroom time.

“What do we do all day?”

“Test!”

What do we want to do?”

“Teach!”

The rally of teachers took place two hours before a Plainfield School District 202 Board meeting at Crystal Lawn, where several teachers spoke about how they have little time to concentrate on higher achieving and gifted students.

Association of Plainfield Teachers, the teachers union, is in the midst of contract negotiations with the school district.

On Oct. 22, teachers rejected a tentative contract that was agreed upon by negotiating teams on both sides.

They chanted slogans and waved signs as board members and administrators walked into the school.

“We are here to get the best for our teachers,” Walker’s Grove Elementary fifth-grade teacher Karen Eiserman said, adding she was concerned about the increased focus by the administration on testing and less instructional time for teachers.

“It’s to show unity, show we have a strong union,” Eiserman said.

Carla Peters, a teacher who was on the negotiating team,

said she hasn’t seen a rally of this magnitude since 2002, when teachers last striked for a better contract.

However, she said the two sides still are at the table and discussing issues related to salary, retirement and workload.

“I didn’t feel like the [contract nixed by teachers] addressed instructional change as it should have,” said Alisa Vernick, a second-grade teacher at River View Elementary.

Early cold snap isn’t sign of polar vortex

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Forecasters expect the weather to be colder than usual in the Joliet and Chicago area this week as cold air from a massive storm near Alaska blasts through the U.S. But don’t expect to shovel snow or put on the parka.

Temperatures this week will hover between 30 degrees during the day and 20 degrees at night. But as long as people dress appropriately, everyone will survive, said Jeremy Hylka, Joliet Weather Center director.

“It’s cold weather. We’ve seen it before. It’s just earlier than normal,” he said.

However, Monday, when temperatures reached the 60s, [it] might be the last warm weather for the rest of the month, if not the year, Hylka said.

Based on the latest information, this week’s cold snap

might not let up for several weeks, he said. But it won’t be as cold as Minnesota or Wisconsin, where forecasters expect snowfall, he said.

Hylka said many people think this might be the return of last year’s polar vortex, which is an overused term in the media. But it’s more of a cold snap or “unseasonably cold weather,” he said.

“Every cold snap is not a polar vortex,” he said.

In Joliet, Tuesday weather will be mostly cloudy and could include rain in the morning, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will fall to around 36 degrees by 5 p.m. with a west wind traveling between 15 to 20 miles an hour, with gusts as high as 30 miles an hour.

Tuesday temperatures are expected to fall to 25 degrees at night.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 32 degrees and a low around 21 de-

grees at night. Meteorologists predict weather will be very similar through Friday.

Saturday will be partly sunny, with a high near 36 degrees and a slight chance of snow.

The weather will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 25 degrees at night.

Amy Seeley, National Weather Service meteorologist, said the cold weather this week comes from Typhoon Nuri.

Remnants of the typhoon are near Alaska, where it did not do much damage to the islands there,s but forecasters say it’s anchoring a system that will push frigid air into the U.S. mainland and send temperatures plunging early this week.

“Most of it is having to do with the storm out west pushing colder air down,” Seeley said.

Teachers speaking at the meeting said stacking of classes also was an issue. It caused some classes to have 20 to 25 students and some to have more than 30.

Board President Roger Bonuchi said the board was disappointed by the union turning down the latest contract, saying it was the board that agreed to the union’s salary offer.

However, union leaders after the meeting said there were other issues surrounding that offer that the teachers didn’t agree with.

“They’re drawing strength in their members,” Superintendent Lane Abrell said of the rally. “We’re going to continue the negotiation process.”

Korean and Vietnam veterans talk about their return from war

vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars remember the stark contrast in the reaction they received upon returning home.

Some people thanked them for their service, but mostly, the veterans came home to a country that didn’t wave flags to support veterans like today.

“They avoided us mostly,” Vietnam war veteran Frederick Clarence Zabel said, adding veterans from the war were often called “baby killers” and weren’t treated with respect during the decades after World War II. Veterans of both wars experienced loss, as well as physical and psychological damage.

While many are living out the later stages of their lives and feeling fortunate for getting through the wars, they still wonder why they were forgotten or vilified.

Joliet veterans talked about their experiences at war and coming home while being interviewed recently at American Legion Post 1080 in Joliet.

The ‘Forgotten’ war

Marshall Forrest was a medic in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. Forrest served from 1952 to 1954 and didn’t see direct action, but remembers patching up wounded soldiers and prisoners of war.

“Today they don’t call it a war, they call it a conflict,” Forrest said, explaining how he and his veteran colleagues coming home often weren’t recognized for their sacrifice.

However, Forrest said Korean War veterans found comfort in those they knew and loved, which helped them cope with the war’s aftereffects.

“Back then you came home and everybody knew everybody,” said Forrest, who met his wife in the hospital he worked in during the war.

Donald Walden saw action while in charge of command and operations on a ship posted off the Japanese coast through the end of the Korean War. Walden was drafted to the Navy in 1952 while taking classes at Joliet Junior College.

Walden said Korea was the “forgotten” war not just because people back home were distracted with Vietnam and other wars and conflicts, but because there was a lack of preparation for the Korean War itself.

“There were not enough uniforms when I just started,” Walden said. “We let it get that bad. ... I just hoped we never let our guard down.”

Members of Walden’s family have served in several wars, including his father, who served in France during World War I. That lineage instilled a penchant for civil service in Walden, who is a Troy Township trustee and has served in several volunteer offices around Will County.

“Personally, I got a great country to serve,” he said.

“The government doesn’t owe me anything for my service.”

Back from Vietnam

Joliet resident Richard Fredricks served in the Vietnam War from 1958 to 1962.

While he served in various locations within the United States, fixing airplanes as an engineer for the Air Force,

he saw the lack of recognition soldiers and veterans received.

“Back then, that was about the way they felt,” Fredricks said. “Everybody was a baby killer. It was a whole different world back then.”

Coming back from the Vietnam War was different for veteran Orville Elza because the community support that helped Forrest return to civilian life wasn’t there. And veterans were often villainized.

The Vietnam War was responsible for much more than half a million American deaths, but also the pain and suffering of those still living with the images, Elza said.

“I am never so ashamed as when people say, ‘Thank you for serving,’ ” said Elza, who

commanded several aircraft while he served for six years in the Air Force and committed acts he wasn’t proud of.

“Part of us died and never came back.”

Elza said he developed alcoholic tendencies while serving and being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and tinnitus, an ear-ringing disorder.

When he returned home, Elza said there wasn’t direct medical help for people with his conditions. And it’s still an issue today.

“It’s more psychological damage than anything else,” Elza said, explaining how the effects of the war and post-traumatic stress disorder

Exelon donates to memorial restoration $10,000 donation is the latest of many contributions to site

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Efforts to restore the damaged New Lenox veterans memorial site got a $10,000 boost from ComEd’s parent company Exelon Corp.

Company officials have long supported veterans and even have an employee network that supports veterans. They wanted to make a donation when they heard about damages to the site’s monuments in late September, said Terence Donnelly, ComEd executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“When we heard about this, obviously we are pretty impacted. We know the monument symbolizes the sacrifices veterans have made,” Donnelly said.

The company also wanted to donate because New Lenox is within ComEd’s service territory, he said.

Paveza has said he wants the money to go toward more than just restoration, including improving the site’s landscape and adding security cameras.

New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said the village was grateful for Exelon’s donation, but all donations are equally important.

“Some small individuals who don’t have a lot of money send $25, which is truly appreciated,” he said.

people serving in the military, Donnelly said. The companies have a supportive network for employees with a military background called Exelon Militaries Actively Connected or E-MAC. “I know they have a commitment to veterans. They’ve helped us many, many times in the past,” Paveza said.

payment assistance program for veterans and active military personnel called ComEd Helps Activated/Veteran Military Personnel, or CHAMP. Judge refuses to reconsider McKee life sentence Attorney plans to appeal

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Judge Gerald Kinney ruled Monday against reconsidering Bethany McKee’s life sentence.

But lawyers seemed to refer to a former co-defendant in the Hickory Street slayings more often than McKee during court

proceedings.

Defense attorney Chuck Bretz said an “unlawful” sentence that Alisa Massaro Bethany received under McKee a plea deal for testifying in the case deprived his client of the opportunity to properly cross-examine a witness against her.

Bretz said the issue will be raised again as McKee’s sentence is appealed.

On Jan. 9, 2013, McKee and Massaro lured Eric Glover Jr. and Terrance Rankins to Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street in Joliet.

Prosecutors said the women planned to rob the pair along with Joshua Miner and Adam Landerman. Instead, Glover and Rankins were killed.

While Miner strangled Rankins and Landerman is accused of strangling Glover, McKee also was accountable for their murders by participating in the robbery.

Miner was found guilty of

murder in a separate bench trial and will receive a life sentence on Wednesday. Landerman awaits trial.

Massaro also was charged with murder, but pleaded guilty in May to two counts of robbery and two counts of concealing a homicide for a total of 10 years in prison. The original plea deal had the sentences run at the same time, but state law requires they be served consecutively, Bretz noted.

When Massaro’s sentence was amended last week to make them consecutive, it did

not change the amount of time she’ll spend behind bars, Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Daniel Walsh said.

But Bretz said another sentencing hearing should have been held instead of “simply brushing [an unlawful sentence] under the rug.”

“It’s improper, and it violated my client’s due process,” Bretz said.

Kinney said the issue can be raised when McKee appeals her sentence to a higher court, which McKee and Bretz told the judge she intends to do.

State’s Attorney to be honored THE HERALD–NEWS

JOLIET – The Chicago Crime Commission this week will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to James Stewart, the chief investigator for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Stewart of Joliet also was a detective with the Joliet Police Department, where he served 35 years, according to a news release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“Jim Stewart truly set the gold standard in law enforcement over the course of his career,” State’s Attorney James

Glasgow said in the news release. “He possesses all the qualities of a first-rate cop and detective. He’s hardworking, dedicated, ethical, street-smart, observant, trustworthy and community-minded.”

Stewart rose from patrol officer to captain while with the Joliet Police Department, investigating murders, gang shootings and other crimes.

He joined the state’s attorney’s office after retiring from Joliet police.

Stewart will be honored along with others at the Stars of Distinction, 2014 Awards Dinner on Wednesday.

Joliet police investigate shoe robbery

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police are investigating whether a teen caught with a gun Sunday at Lois Place is connected to a robbery that occurred there the day before.

Two 16-year-old boys who arranged to sell collectors’ gym shoes online went to the apartment complex about 10 p.m.

Saturday, Joliet police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. The victims brought four pairs of sneakers, including white and blue Nike Air Jordans.

“While they were expecting to meet the buyer at 1021 Lois Place, two suspects came up carrying a revolver and a pis-

tol,” Gregory said. After taking the shoes, two cellphones and cash, the robbers fled and the victims called police, Gregory said.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, an officer on foot patrol near 1001 Lois Place noticed two men matching the robbers’ descriptions, wearing white and blue Air Jordans. Gregory said the officer “noticed the odor of marijuana” when he approached the pair and asked who they were visiting in the complex.

When another officer arrived, one of them, a 17-yearold, ran off before he could be searched. After he was tackled to the ground, he refused to

show whether anything was in his hands, Gregory said.

“When he was searched, they found he was carrying a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun,” Gregory said.

The teen was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, obstructing a police officer and criminal trespassing and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

His companion, Cornelus L. Loftis, 21, of the 400 block of South May Street, also was charged with obstructing a police officer and released on bond.

Detectives are investigating both incidents.

JOLIET – State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said Monday he hopes Republican governor-elect Bruce Rauner and his administration will make reopening the Illinois Youth Center in Joliet as a treatment center for mentally ill inmates a top priority.

“I look forward to convincing him,” McGuire said.

The $30 million needed in annual operating costs was not included in the state budget approved earlier this year by lawmakers.

But the Illinois Department of Corrections is under pressure from a federal lawsuit seeking improved treatment for mentally ill inmates.

The DOC on Oct. 6 filed a report in U.S. District Court in Peoria outlining its plans for IYC-Joliet and three other facilities to be used for mentally ill inmates. The filing follows a September hearing at which lawyers for a group of inmates asked the state to explain its progress in improving treatment.

The court-appointed monitor assigned to the case reported in September the state had not made acceptable progress on changes outlined in a May 2013 order.

“Necessarily, this long-term solution will involve extensive construction and staffing efforts,” read an IDOC filing.

The state estimates it will spend $62 million a year to pay an additional 352 clinical work-

LOCAL BRIEFS JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Will County Sheriff’s police allege a man tried to rape a 78-year-old woman in her home earlier this month.

David A. Keys, 40, was arrested Thursday evening at his residence on Pheasant Run Road, according to Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

He is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion and unlawful restraint and is being held in the Will County jail on a $3 million bond.

About 1:30 a.m. Nov. 1, a man knocked on the senior’s door and asked if her daughter was home, Hoffmeyer said. The victim has a daughter and told the man to wait while she got a phone number from her bedroom.

“When she turned around, the man was standing there in her bedroom holding a steak knife.

He tried to rape her, but wasn’t

successful,” Hoffmeyer said.

After asking the victim for money, the attacker left and she called police.

“The victim did not recognize the man as anyone she knew,” Hoffmeyer noted.

The victim was treated for “cuts and bruises,” according to police reports.

FBI arrests two in cell phone store robbery

BOLINGBROOK – The FBI arrested two men for allegedly holding up a cell phone store Thursday.

Andrew Coleman, 30, of Country Club Hills and Rashaud Gibson, 18, of Calumet City are scheduled to appear in federal court this week on robbery charges, FBI Special Agent Joan Hyde said.

At 5:25 p.m., two men wearing hooded sweatshirts entered T-Mobile, 745 E. Boughton Road,

while a customer and two employees were inside. According to court filings, Coleman pulled out a handgun, and said, “This is a holdup.”

Surveillance video allegedly shows Gibson went to a storage locker and filled white laundry bags with boxes of cellphones.

Coleman threatened a customer by holding a gun to his head before forcing the three victims into a bathroom while the robbers fled, according to the FBI. Tracking software traced the phones to the parking lot of a liquor store on Dixie Highway in Harvey, where police found Coleman and Gibson putting a hooded sweatshirt into a charity donation bin, according to the FBI. Authorities said Coleman and Gibson admitted to the robbery during questioning.

The customer did not suffer any injuries.

Zabel, also a Vietnam veteran, didn’t see the same type of horrors Elza did while helping transport people, including those who were wounded, evacuate Vietnam following the withdrawal of American forces.

“What got to me was seeing the boys try to leave their own country,” Zabel said, adding that it disturbed him to think

of American children having to go through the same situation.

Zabel didn’t see people give him, or others like his cousin who died in Vietnam, the recognition they deserved after returning to civilian life.

“We really didn’t get recognized until the 1990s,” he said.

“Why?” U.S. Army veteran Martin Dominik served after the Vietnam and Korean wars. But he took care of two veterans from those eras who told him about the horrors they endured, as well as the hatred they felt from people when they came back.

OBITUARIES THOMAS P. BARRY Thomas P. Barry, age 60, passed away Monday, November 3, 2014, in Portland, Oregon, with his loving wife at his side.

Survived by his wife, Joyce (Judge); three step-children, Tamera, Timothy and Tarelyn Tamez; six grandchildren; his mother, Betty Barry; brothers, Tim (Suzanne), Terry (Penny), and David (Noreen) Barry; sisters, Barbara (Tommy) Kirkland and Kathleen (John) Sharkey; sister-in-law, Judith Judge; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his father, David Barry; nieces, Melissa and Ryan; and nephew, T.J. Born in Joliet, living in Shorewood all his life, until he moved to Portland, Oregon, 20 years ago.

Tom was a retired Boilermaker from Local One in Chicago. He was a lifelong fan of motorcycles and motorcycle racing. Tom lived life to the fullest. He was a fun-loving guy who loved his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, mostly because he was always a kid at heart.

Services were held at Springer and Son Funeral Home in Beaverton, OR, November 8, 2014. A Memorial Mass for Tom will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Jude Catholic Church, 2200 McDonough Street in Joliet. The family will receive guests before the Mass at 9:00 a.m.

GLENN O. BOYNTON, SR. Born: April 27, 1950 Died: Nov. 8, 2014

Glenn O. Boynton, Sr., age 64, of Wilmington, passed away November 8, 2014, at Silver Cross Medical Center.

Born April 27, 1950, Glenn is a son of Betty Boynton of Wilmington and the late Glenn A. Boynton. He was a graduate of Wilmington HS and honorably served in the US Air Force during Vietnam. Glenn was currently employed with Caterpillar in the Joliet facility as a CNC Machinist.

He was a member of the IAM Local #851 and has volunteered with the Wilmington Lions Club for their annual

Spook Hike since 2001. Glenn loved to read and held a vast collection of Science Fiction books. He enjoyed playing pinochle and will be most remembered for his love of family.

Survivors include his wife of44 years, Sharon; children, Glenn O., Jr. (Colette) Boynton, Matthew D. (Teresa) Boynton and Sara (Scott) Barbour; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his mother, Betty Boynton; and brother, Billy Boynton, all of Wilmington.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 12th from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd. in Wilmington (815-476-2181). Cremation rites will follow. Inurnment with full military honors will be held in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date.

He loved being outdoors and even more, farming side by side with his son. Robert cherished his family and enjoyed being together for holidays and gatherings.

He is also survived by his brother, Donald S. (Jo Beth) Larkin of Minooka; sisters-in-law, Jane (Joseph) Riggs of Joliet and Beth (Theodore) Poplawski of Shorewood; one brother-in-law, William (Mary) Whitmer of Joliet; and many nieces and nephews.

He picked off nine passes that year in 1995 and finished with 22 for his career. He scored four touchdowns on returns and was a key player on two Vikings teams that reached the NFC championship game, after the 1998 and 2000 seasons.

But that punishing playing style produced a number of injuries, keeping him out of a total of 13 games over his last three years in the league. It also likely paved the way for the onset of ALS. Medical research has shown deaths from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s diseases, when combined, have occurred in NFL players at about three times the predicted rate for the general population.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – A former University of Iowa researcher has died before the start of his murder trial in the 1997 death of his wife, his attorney said Monday.

John Bloomfield died suddenly Thursday at hospital in Minneapolis, according to Leon Spies. He said Bloomfield’s family confirmed the death.

Bloomfield was arrested in November 2013 in connection to the death of his wife, Frances Bloomfield, in Iowa City about 17 years ago. Authorities say he strangled his wife then dumped her plastic-wrapped body in a ditch near Rockford.

Bloomfield denied any wrongdoing. He had insisted that he returned from an international business trip to find his home burglarized and blood-stained, with his wife’s car missing. The vehicle later turned up at a New

Jersey airport.

Investigators arrested Bloomfield after developing new forensic evidence in the case.

Before his death, Bloomfield was being treated for cancer. A judge earlier this year allowed him to live under strict monitoring at his Minnesota home until trial, which was scheduled to start next year.

“He was as much as one could, given the circumstances, eager to have a trial where not only the prosecution’s evidence but evidence we uncovered in our investigation could be presented,” he said.

The attorney said Bloomfield’s illness was physically and emotionally taxing on his client. But he said Bloomfield was “bright and focused and helpful” during a visit to his home a few weeks ago.

“It’s sad that [there will] be this cloud over his name,” he said.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – As ALS began to destroy his body, Orlando Thomas lost his ability to move.

Then he could no longer speak. His wife, Demetra, guided him through every painstaking word.

“She’d have to go through the entire alphabet, and he’d blink his eye. The only muscle that worked was his eyelids, so he would blink at the letter,” said Mark Bartelstein, the former agent for the free safety who led the NFL in interceptions as a rookie for the Minnesota Vikings in 1995. “Sentences would take forever.”

The effort was worth it for friends and family of the beloved Thomas.

He died Sunday at 42 in his hometown of Crowley, Louisiana, after fighting the fatal amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the neurodegenerative disease commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, for more than 10 years. The death was confirmed Monday by the Vikings, Bartelstein and Glenn Boullion, the

director of Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Crowley.

The Vikings issued a statement expressing their sadness and condolences to his family.

“He represented the franchise and the state of Minnesota with the utmost dignity and class,” the team said. “While his outgoing personality made him a favorite among his teammates, Orlando’s involvement in the community made him a favorite outside of Winter Park.”

Thomas played seven seasons for the Vikings.

“We use great hyperbole or drama, but there’s no way I could even properly describe his courage and his class and his selflessness, just the way he’s handled everything,” said Bartelstein, who represented Thomas throughout his career.

“All he ever worried about was everybody else. Never selfpity. Never woe is me. It was always, ‘How are you doing?

How’s your family? How are your kids?’ He never wanted to talk about what he was going through.”

Police: 2 people die in Rockford home shooting

ROCKFORD – Police are investigating the deaths of a 40-yearold man and 38-year-old woman shot in a Rockford home.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office said Anthony and Angela Singleton died Sunday.

Police say they are not looking for a suspect at this time, but they haven’t labeled the incident a murder-suicide.

Rockford police responded to a call at 12:30 p.m. Sunday and Anthony Singleton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Angela Singleton was taken to a hospital where she later died.

WREX-TV reports authorities say the two were dating and had children together but were not married.

The coroner’s office said autopsies are pending.

Snow could reduce corn harvest in Upper Midwest

DES MOINES, Iowa – The season’s first snowstorm could be bad news for farmers in the Upper Midwest where corn remains in fields.

At least 4 inches of snow could fall overnight in South Dakota where about 40 percent of the crop remains, and in Minnesota where about a third remains.

Most of the storm is expected to stay north of corn and soybean areas in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Iowa State University agriculture economist Chad Hart says a snowstorm could reduce the harvest if ears of corn are knocked off or plants fall over.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says soybean farmers will harvest 3.96 billion bushels, up 31 million bushels from the October estimate. The corn crop is slightly smaller at 14.41 billion bushels,

New documents offer view of drug lord network

CHICAGO – Prosecutors have released previously sealed testimony from two cartel associates-turned-star government witnesses that offer an insiders’ look at how Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman trafficked drugs to Chicago and other American cities.

In the papers – filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago over the weekend – Margarito and Pedro Flores portray a lucrative, well-organized network that adhered to strict operational rules set by Guzman and fellow Sinaloa cartel kingpins.

The twin brothers say their network expanded over a decade

until, at its peak around 2007, they sold up to two tons of cocaine a month in Chicago alone.

They also supplied eight other cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Fearful that their multimillion-dollar drug ring would finally unravel, the Flores brothers began cooperating in 2008 with U.S. agents. Says Pedro Flores in his statement, “I realized that I would not be able to continue this kind of a life forever.”

Guzman, who was captured in Mexico this year, is an indicted co-conspirator in the Chicago case with the Flores twins and half a dozen others.

The weekend filings come in advance of a Nov. 24 sentencing hearing in Chicago for Alfredo Vasquez-Hernandez, who pleaded guilty in the case earlier this year.

Chicago woman charged in death of 3-year-old son

CHICAGO – Authorities say a Chicago woman has been charged in the death of her 3-year-old son.

Chicago Police say that 22-yearold Tylesha G. Griffin was charged with first-degree murder on Sunday, two days after the boy, Donnell Coakley, was found unresponsive in his bed in the family’s home on the city’s North Side.

The boy was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says the death was classified as a homicide after an autopsy revealed “abusive injuries.” But the office says the exact cause of death hasn’t been determined pending further tests.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says

the boy’s two siblings have been taken into protective custody.

Department spokeswoman Karen Hawkins says the DCFS is investigating both parents in the child’s death.

SIU says Interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela has died

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University’s Interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela died unexpectedly Sunday evening while battling cancer, according to university officials.

Sarvela worked at SIU for 28 years, including as a faculty member, dean and associate vice president before being named interim chancellor in July after former Chancellor Rita Cheng left to become president of Northern Arizona University.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Monday embraced a radical change in how the government treats Internet service, coming down on the side of consumer activists who fear slower download speeds and higher costs but angering Republicans and the nation’s cable giants who say the plan would kill jobs.

Obama called on the Federal Communications Commission to more heavily regulate Internet providers and treat broadband much as it would any other public utility. He said the FCC should explicitly prohibit Internet providers such as Verizon and AT&T from charging data hogs such as Netflix extra to move their content more quickly.

The announcement sent cable stocks tumbling.

“Net neutrality” is the idea that Internet service providers shouldn’t block, slow or manipulate data moving across its networks.

VA chief vows renewed focus on customer service

WASHINGTON – On the eve of Veterans Day, the Veterans Affairs Department announced a reorganization Monday to make it easier for veterans to gain access to the sprawling department and its maze-like websites.

VA Secretary Robert McDonald called the restructuring the largest in the department’s history and said it will bring a singular

focus on customer service to an agency serving 22 million veterans.

“As VA moves forward, we will judge the success of all our efforts against a single metric: the outcomes we provide for veterans,” he said. The VA’s mission is to care for veterans, “so we must become more focused on veterans’ needs,” he said.

Postal Service says it is victim of hacking attack

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service said Monday it had been hacked, potentially compromising sensitive information about its employees such as names and addresses, Social Security numbers, emergency contacts and other information.

The FBI said it was leading a multi-agency investigation into the breach, which took effect in mid-September. The intrusion was similar to those reported by other federal agencies as well as in the private sector. The agency isn’t recommending that its customers take any action.

Postal Service spokesman David Partenheimer said customers at local post offices or those using its website, usps. com, were not affected but that people who used its call center may have had telephone numbers, email addresses and other information compromised.

Partenheimer said the attacks affected Postal Service workers across the board, from the postmaster general to letter carriers.

Obama rejects notion there is breakthrough with N. Korea

The Associated Press BEIJING – President Barack Obama is squelching speculation that the release of two Americans held in North Korea might pave the way for a new round of nuclear talks, saying the U.S. needs more than “small gestures” before reopening a high level of dialogue with Pyongyang.

Shortly after Obama arrived in China, North Korea’s neighbor and chief benefactor, the president made his first extensive public comments Monday on the hand-over of Americans Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller. The timing of the Americans’ release raised questions about what message North Korea’s young leader, Kim Jong Un, might be trying to send Obama while he is in the region.

While Obama welcomed Bae’s and Miller’s reunion with their families, he insisted his administration had offered nothing in return to North Korea, one of the world’s most isolated and impoverished countries.

“There were not high-level policy discussions,” Obama said during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. When asked whether the negotiations to secure Bae and Miller’s release gave him new insight into North Korea’s mysterious president and his strategy for dealing with the U.S., Obama said curtly, “No.” The president’s dismissive tone was echoed by senior administration officials who said that while the White House remains open to engagement with North Korea, Pyongyang still has not shown any seriousness about dismantling its nuclear program or in addressing human rights violations.

The president arrived in Beijing Monday for his first visit to China since 2009. His discussions during three days of talks largely center on strengthening U.S. economic ties with the booming region.

After meeting with regional leaders at an Asia-Pacific economic summit, Obama will begin a series of one-on-one meetings Tuesday with Chi-

nese President Xi Jinping.

As he addressed business leaders attending the economic summit Monday, Obama sought to dispel the notion that America’s interest in Asia should be a cause for concern among China’s leaders.

He said “one country’s prosperity doesn’t have to come at the expense of the other.”

In a goodwill gesture, the U.S. and China announced an agreement extending the length of time its citizens can be granted visas in each country. U.S. officials hope the deal to extend tourist and business visas to 10 years and student visas to five years will lead to an increase in Chinese citizens who come to the U.S. and spend money while on vacation or working.

We owe our veterans more than just thanks

Today is a day when we will see flags flying, men and women in military uniforms and ceremonies where children put their hands over their hearts as patriotic songs are played.

It’s wonderful to honor our veterans. For all they have done, they deserve a day to be given accolades.

There were 19.6 million military veterans in the United States as of 2013, according to the Census Bureau. Of those, 9.3 million were 65 years or older, and 1.6 million were younger than 35. In 2013, there were 3.6 million veterans with a service-connected disability, which is one that was a result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service.

Veterans likely have seen images most of us can’t imagine: The horrors of a movie or video game can’t compare to the battlefield many veterans have experienced – and fought on – firsthand.

And they did so because they believed in something bigger than themselves: They believed in their country. They sacrificed for the benefit of others. They understood that a

country which cherishes freedom as an ideal requires some to give up their freedom for the benefit of others.

In many ways, our country fails veterans.

Think of how many have had to wait to get service at the nation’s veterans hospitals.

Multiple deployments to dangerous, hostile lands can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder or suicide. There are 30,000 to 32,000 U.S. deaths from suicide a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and of those, about 20 percent are veterans.

We owe them more.

Saying thanks to a veteran, or attending a Veterans Day ceremony to honor them, is a wonderful, heartfelt gesture.

But we cannot stop with that. We must demand our veterans receive the care they deserve for giving their all for their country.

We must show our gratitude every day, not just the one day a year set aside for doing so.

As John F. Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Quinn too unpopular, loses to fresh face Rauner Bruce Rauner out-performed his fellow Republican Bill Brady’s 2010 gubernatorial election performance in every region of the state last week.

As I write this, with less than half a percent of the vote yet to be counted, Rauner has a big five-point margin over Gov. Pat Quinn and appears to have won a majority vote in a threeway election.

The national headwinds against the Democratic Party surely played a role in the Quinn loss. Even so, Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka is widely considered one of the most popular Republicans in Illinois, yet she under-performed Rauner.

Rauner scored just above the magic 20 percent number in Chicago – a point where a Republican can help balance out the rest of the state’s vote.

But he didn’t really need it. He out-performed Brady’s 2010

Even worse, Quinn seemed to build his entire campaign around this crazy theory. It’s apparently why he ran a “base” campaign, constantly talking about raising the minimum wage, bashing Rauner for being a heartless billionaire, etc.

The whole idea, from the TV ads down to the voter registration and the minimum wage ballot initiative, was to fire up the base and jack up turnout.

Quinn didn’t have to worry about spending too much time and money appealing to sub-

urban women, or downstaters or whomever. He could focus almost his entire effort on turning out the base with a couple of strongly populist issues.

President George W. Bush used an anti-gay marriage ballot initiative in Ohio to successfully bring conservatives to the polls and win the state in 2004. But Bush was a popular war president at the time. And, like Obama in 2008, that was a presidential election year, when turnout is much more easily boosted than in off-years like this one.

Overall, Quinn was a flawed, unpopular governor who plotted a doomed campaign strategy against a guy who had a far better message, lots more money and, perhaps most importantly, a fresh, new face.

WILMINGTON – Motorcycles, a Civil War cannon, pregame fireworks display and the Wilmington marching band will greet the undefeated Wilmington Wildcats as they storm onto Becker Field at 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

At 5 p.m., the Class 3A quarterfinal will kick off between Interstate Eight Small champion Wilmington (11-0) and Okaw Valley Conference champion and 2013 Class 3A runner-up St. Joseph-Ogden (10-1).

The Spartans dropped a heart-breaking 43-41 overtime decision to Stillman Valley in last year’s Class 3A title game.

That’s the same Stillman Valley that defeated Wilmington, 21-7, in the infamous 2003 Class 3A state championship game dubbed “The Ice Bowl.” The game was played in a central Illinois ice storm at the University of Illinois.

Wilmington enters this matchup fresh from a 40-0 rout Saturday of Okaw Valley Conference foe Monticello (7-4) in Monticello. St. Joseph-Ogden defeated OVC co-champion Tolono Unity, 41-14, on Saturday in Tolono, thus winning the unofficial Okaw Valley championship. Earlier, Tolono beat St. Joseph-Ogden, 357, for the Spartans’ only loss.

Cole Berry led the Spartans’ defense with three interceptions and a fumble recovery against Unity on Saturday. The senior doubled his interception total as he has six for the season.

Fan boycott would send message to McCaskeys One of the most famous stories in the New Testament is the parable of the talents, in which a master goes on a journey and entrusts money (talents) to three of his servants.

The servant who received five talents invests the money and doubles it. So does the servant who received two talents. The third servant takes the one talent he received and buries it. When the master returns, he’s furious at the servant’s lack of enterprise and throws him into the darkness outside.

I don’t know what the McCaskeys do with the landfill of money they have, but I know it doesn’t go toward football.

It couldn’t, not with the way the Bears played Sunday night in a 55-14 loss to the Packers, the way they played in a 51-23 loss to the Patriots the game before or the way they have played for what feels like forever during the McCaskey family’s ownership of the franchise.

People with money and

The only way to send a message to the McCaskey family is for Bears ticketholders not to show up Sunday at Soldier Field for the Vikings game. Would a boycott change anything? Would it make the McCaskeys understand that their general manager doesn’t know how to build a team and that their head coach is as passive as a turtle? No, it wouldn’t.

But it sure would feel good.

It’s the only way for fans to fight back. It’s the one thing the McCaskeys seem to understand, if only vaguely.

Again, I have no idea what the family does with the millions and millions of dollars

it has amassed over the years.

None of the family members seems to live ostentatiously.

I’d almost feel better if one of them were driving around town in a Maserati. At least the Biblical talent that founder George Halas had entrusted in them would have been used for something tangible.

Fans should respond Sunday with three and a half hours of nonattendance.

The problem with a boycott, of course, is that it doesn’t get at the root of the problem, which is that no one at Halas Hall seems to know how to hire the right people.

That starts with the McCaskeys, who bring in people with the same bewildered looks on their faces as they have. Coach Marc Trestman said Monday that, despite Sunday’s embarrassing display, there would be no staff changes. Of course not.

So I’d like chairman George McCaskey to arrive at Soldier Field on Sunday and experience emptiness. I’d like him to feel a cold wind whipping, unblocked, across his

face, to understand how far this franchise has fallen and to see what that descent has meant to fans. The fans who have tolerated bad football and ticket-price increases much too often.

But that’s up to the people who have stood by this franchise through too much thin and not enough thick. The disgust is there. Is the will?

It’s not easy turning away from something so important to so many people. But remember, Cubs fans stopped selling out Wrigley Field, and change came, slowly.

Those fans are giving the Cubs the benefit of the doubt now because the team has spent big money on president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and new manager Joe Maddon. No one knows whether it will pay off, but at least there’s hope. The Bears haven’t given their fans any hope, not even the false kind.

They gave their fans general manager Phil Emery and Trestman, both low-budget hires.

That’s the reason you

fans should speak with your absence Sunday. The McCaskeys already have your money. It’s just sitting there, doing nothing, like the Bears’ defense against Aaron Rodgers. One of my Facebook friends dreamed of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban buying the Bears from the McCaskeys. Sorry, but they have the franchise in a death grip. You couldn’t pry their cold fingers from it with a blowtorch.

But maybe you can guilt them into cleaning house after the season and, as I suggested last week, hiring a football guru to run the organization. If that doesn’t happen, you can show your disgust by not going to the games next season. The only thing these people understand is cash, or at least the collecting of it. They certainly don’t understand winning.

Bury them.

Less than 24 hours after a 55-14 loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field – which came off the bye week that followed a 51-23 loss to the Patriots – Trestman addressed the media and expressed confidence in his coaching staff.

“I’ve stood behind the guys that are working here because I’ve been around a lot of coaches over the years,” Trestman said. “I know guys that do it for the right reasons, that are great educators and teachers, are demanding – which our coaches are. They’re extremely demanding on the field and in the classroom. I think we’ve got excellent coaches here.”

The Packers had an answer on the first few drives to stop Forte.

“Most of the runs in the game were called runs, and we didn’t have the positive gains,” Trestman said. “We were left with the chains, not getting ahead of the chains with some of the runs, as well. That really hurt us because they were up in there tight. They were really pressuring us throughout the game and trying to take our running game away.”

NEW YORK – White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu was a unanimous winner of the AL Rookie of the Year award, and New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom won the NL honor.

“I don’t have any words to describe this moment,” Abreu said through a translator on the MLB Network telecast Monday.

“I consider myself a good hitter, and I guess I’ve proven it.”

One year after defecting from Cuba, the 27-year-old Abreu led the major leagues with a .581 slugging percentage. He was sixth in batting at .317, tied for fourth in home runs with 36 and fifth in RBIs with 107.

Abreu received all 30 first place votes for 150 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Shaw Media Correspondent MANHATTAN – U.S. Air Force Capt. Anthony Simone is lucky to be alive.

Simone doesn’t remember anything about the day when his helicopter was shot down in the skies over Afghanistan.

He just knows what he’s been told: As a helicopter pilot, his missions were search and rescues. He estimates he saved about 200 servicemen and women during his three tours of duty – two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

Simone was due to go home one week before he was shot down. His mission that day was a search and rescue of two wounded British soldiers. Five of the seven crewmen in the chopper died from the blast.

“I would do it again,” Simone said. “If it wasn’t me that was shot down, it would have been someone else.”

A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can happen in the blink of an eye – from slipping on an icy sidewalk, from a car accident or playing sports or, in the case of Simone, from falling 150 feet out of the sky.

An estimated one in five of the 2.3 million troops who have served in combat since 2001 have suffered a brain injury and/or developed post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the Nov. 5 edition of the Military Times. And scientists from five institutions are one year into a five-year, $42.9 million study to find biomarkers that can indicate evidence of these injuries common to combat veterans.

Brain injuries can be complex as well; and as boxers know well, a blow to one side of the head can affect neurons on the opposite side.

Many TBI patients can reclaim the parts of their brain that were damaged; but for others, the injuries will cause huge challenges the rest of their lives.

A concussion is one of the mildest forms of traumatic brain injuries. More severe TBIs can alter the entire fabric of a life.

Simone’s wife, Andrea, will always remember the morning her doorbell rang with the news. A military friend had told her a helicopter had been shot down in the war zone, but the two had heard it was of a different type from the one her husband flew.

Andrea was sitting on the floor with their 8-month-old son watching “The Today Show” air a segment about the incident. Not 10 minutes

later, a commander and a director were at the door.

Simone, they told her, was in critical condition and in surgery. The next time she saw him, he was in a San Antonio hospital in a coma “He was so swollen, and his head was wrapped,” Andrea said. “He was intubated.”

Simone had no broken bones, but the damage to his brain was immense. Simone was in a coma for six weeks and an inpatient in various hospitals for a year. Now, 4½ years after the crash, he’s down to therapy one day each week.

Today, Simone has little use of his left arm, and he walks with a limp. He has spasms in one side of his body; and his wife said he has cognitive difficulties, such as remembering things and carrying out more-complicated tasks. He did rise to a self-imposed challenge

“I got sick and tired of people thinking I couldn’t,” Simone said.

It also can cause epilepsy and increase the risk for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other brain disorders that become more prevalent with age. n The two leading causes are falls (35 percent) and car accidents (17 percent). n Blasts are a leading cause of TBI for military personnel in war zones. n Signs can be moderate or severe and may not appear until days after the injury.

The group’s goal is “to restore some of the freedom and independence our veterans sacrificed defending ours.”

That would do wonders for Simone, whom Andrea called “a very determined, passionate person.”

“He still has the same amount of love he’s always had,” Andrea said, “and he’s a good father.”

Simone, who used to enjoy hunting, described his life as “challenging,” but he is ready and willing to return to the working world. That’s a big hole in his life he needs to fill, he said.

“I’m trying to find a job,” he said. “I need something to do. I would love to do anything to help people that are in the hospital.”

Dear Doctor K: My teenage daughter has had Type 1 diabetes since she was 8 years old.

Fortunately, exercise, a good diet and insulin treatments have kept her healthy. I recently heard of a breakthrough at Harvard that might someday cure Type 1 diabetes. Can you explain?

Dear Reader: The research you’re referring to was conducted in the Harvard laboratory of Dr. Douglas Melton.

Like you, Dr. Melton has a child with Type 1 diabetes. When his child became sick, he redirected his laboratory to the goal of finding a cure.

First, some basics.

When we eat, sugar (called glucose) gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Almost every cell in our body needs glucose to function normally. However, the cells prefer a steady level of glucose in the blood -- not too high, not too low, but just right (like Goldilocks).

To keep the glucose level steady, the pancreas – a finger-shaped organ in our abdomen – makes insulin. Specifically, when we eat and blood levels of glucose rise, cells in the pancreas called beta cells make insulin. Insulin drives glucose from the blood and into cells throughout the body. This lowers blood levels of glucose.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease.

For reasons that remain unclear, the immune system attacks and kills beta cells. As a result, people with Type 1 diabetes no longer can make their own insulin. Without insulin treatments, blood glucose levels rise dangerously high, and other damaging changes occur in body chemistry.

People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin every day to remain in good health. The discovery of insulin treatment

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff for diabetes (in part by scientists here at Harvard) was a Nobel Prize-winning accomplishment. But it was not a cure. For years, scientists have dreamed of somehow replacing the beta cells that have been killed by the disease.

The discovery of stem cells – cells that have the potential to develop into different types of body cells – was exciting for medical research.

Among other uses, stem cells theoretically can be coaxed into becoming cells that have been killed by disease -- like beta cells in Type 1 diabetes. However, until now, no one has figured out a technique for transforming stem cells into beta cells, in the large number required to replace the beta cells killed by the disease.

Dr. Melton’s team seems to have accomplished that feat. They have been able to create billions of beta cells from one person’s stem cells.

When the cells were placed inside diabetic mice, they started making insulin in just the right amounts: Blood levels of glucose were not too high, not too low, but just right. It will be years before we know if this treatment will work in humans. If it works in the short-run, will it continue to work -- will the cells truly produce a cure? And will they do so without causing complications?

So while this research does not represent a cure, it is likely to be a landmark event on the road to a cure.
