Will County forest district looking into McFarland

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County said Monday it is looking into Joliet City Councilman Jim McFarland’s use of its postage machine for “several personal mailings.”

The district also said findings “if appropriate” will be sent to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The statement indicates a second use of public resources by McFarland for personal or political mailings.

The city of Joliet is looking into the use of city envelopes for mailings by McFarland, who also was a Forest Preserve District employee before resigning last month.

McFarland previously acknowledged the use of city envelopes but said he did so “inadvertently.” He did not mention the use of a Forest Preserve District stamping machine.

The statement issued by the Forest Preserve District

said the postage machine was used on city of Joliet envelopes.

“The District is currently conducting a thorough review of Jim McFarland’s use of the Forest Preserve postage machine for several personal mailings in City of Joliet envelopes that were postmarked on Sunday, October 18,” the statement said.

The statement notes that McFarland gave his notice of resignation Oct. 21 from his job as community partnerships manager for the Forest Preserve District and is no longer an employee.

The statement said the district “takes all allegations of employee misconduct seriously.”

McFarland’s attorney, George Lenard, said, “It’s our position that Mr. McFarland did not commit any employee misconduct and his resignation as community partnerships manager had nothing to do with employee misconduct.”

McFarland, when asked at

the time of his resignation, said he was leaving the Forest Preserve District to develop a marketing and communications business he had started. He also said his job, which was to line up sponsors for special events, was changing because the district was cutting back on events.

The city of Joliet last week said it plans to provide the state’s attorney with documents it has concerning McFarland mailings using city envelopes to announce a Facebook page he started for lost pets and a pancake breakfast that was being funded by his campaign committee.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said Monday that he has talked with Forest Preserve District officials about the postage on envelopes, which came back to City Hall when the addresses could not be found.

Shanahan said he has not yet provided documents to the State’s Attorney’s Office but expected to do so this week.

Joliet plans intersection improvements at Essington and Caton Farm roads

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is buying up land easements for intersection improvements at Essington and Caton Farm roads.

The intersection is at the crossroads of two major corridors and near the Louis Joliet Mall shopping district.

Joliet hopes to get the project done in 2016, Public Works Director James Trizna said.

“We’re trying to accommodate the traffic that exists at Essington and Caton Farm,” he said. “There’s not enough capacity now for southbound Essington and eastbound Caton Farm.”

The project is estimated to cost $1.7 million. It will be funded with 80 percent federal money and 20 percent city money.

The project includes: • A new right-turn lane on southbound Essington turning west onto Caton Farm • A new right-turn lane on eastbound Caton Farm turning south on Essington • Lengthening of the leftturn lane on eastbound Caton Farm turning north onto Essington to accommodate more cars • New traffic signals • Pavement grading and overlays at the intersection.

Joliet educators work with Latino and Hispanic families

JOLIET – Rene Valenciano has watched the number of Latino and Hispanic students grow at Joliet Public Schools District 86 from when he first started working there in 2011.

Valenciano, an English Language Learners coordinator, said the district has grown by 500 students in the past five years and, by his count, 480 of them needed bilingual services.

While not all children from Latino families speak Spanish, the demand for bilingual services has increased over the years, he said.

Joliet has a long history of Latino families, but their population has grown to become the dominant one in area school districts. Educators at elementary, middle and high schools work with families through bilingual service programs and connections with local social service agencies.

“I think as the community evolves, the district has also had to evolve and look more carefully at the needs of all kids,” Valenciano said.

“Sometimes educational systems tend to want to cover everybody with the same kind of programming. It’s important for us to keep in mind programming has to be more appropriate for the students and their families.”

Growing population

The population of Latino and Hispanic residents more than doubled in Joliet between 2000 and 2010 and makes up about 27 percent of the city, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Statewide, Joliet has the sixth-largest population of Latinos, according to the Nathalie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement.

In the past five years, the percentage of Hispanic students – an ethnicity category defined by the state that includes Latino – at District 86 jumped from 50 percent to 57 percent. The percentage of Hispanic students at Joliet Township High School District 204 grew from 39 percent to 45 percent.

Within the schools at each district, Sator Sanchez Elementary and Joliet Central have the highest number of Hispanic students.

Alberto Filipponi, District 204 curriculum director, said people have misconceptions that Latino and Hispanic families are immigrants, but many have been living in Joliet for decades, especially on the northeast side of the city.

The vast majority of the bilingual students at District 204 were born in the U.S., he said.

“The population has thrived here and they’re here to stay,” he said.

Educating Latino and Hispanic students

Besides bilingual education services, which are required by federal law, Joliet schools try to

work with students and their families in other ways.

“In every building, we’re trying to make sure there is at least one front office person who speaks Spanish,” Valenciano said of District 86. “At this point, we’re close.”

In the past three years, the district has made sure monthly newsletters sent by each school are in Spanish and English as outlined in the district strategic plan. The district also has a Spanish and English interpreter at each board meeting.

Filipponi said it’s been a District 204 strategic goal to communicate effectively with Hispanic families. While many

teachers and support staff speak Spanish, the majority do not, he stated in an email.

“In the near future, we will be looking into implementing a bilingual liaison that can help facilitate communications between teachers and general [education] students whose parents do not speak English,” he stated.

Lourdes Paramo, bilingual testing coordinator and teacher lead, works with students and parents at District 204 and is an advocate and leader in the Latino community, Filipponi said.

Support staff union continue to rally

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 support staff union members pleaded with board members once more for a better outcome on their contract.

At Monday’s board meeting, members of the Plainfield Association of Support Staff spoke about their work and their sacrifices.

The union and District 202 has been in contract negotiations since April. Support staff members expressed dissatisfaction with what they said district officials have proposed for their contract.

PASS members have proposed a 3.75 percent raise and they are demanding better benefits.

Support staff have been rallying to support their cause and were rallying outside Walkers Grove Elementary School before the board meeting.

“We did this in an effort to help District 202 have a balanced budget during the economic [downturn]. It is impossible to keep this pattern going,” Beutel said. “Insurance and pay are what

many of us count on and need to help support ourselves or support our families.”

She asked the Board of Education to not “overlook or devalue our contributions.”

Not all support staff could be at the meeting because they’re working a second job,

said Kelly Medina, a Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Center special education teacher assistant. She held up a list of 30 signatures of special education teacher assistants who could not make the meeting.

“The need for these second jobs become more of a necessity with the higher cost of insurance and the negligible wage increases we have received,” Medina said.

Praise for support staff came from Lauren Longo, president of District 202 Special Education Parent Teacher Association. She said as a substitute teacher at Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Center, she would not be as successful without teacher assistants.

She said teacher assistants do more than help with classroom instruction and socialization. They also assist with therapy, testing and devices that help students with disabilities.

“In some cases our [teacher assistants] are our children’s only friend. … They are District 202’s unsung heroes,” she said.

Extra officers proposed for Plainfield police in 2016

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield police are looking to add two new officers to increase response times during peak hours and limit overtime staffing requirements.

Plainfield residents also responded favorably to feeling safe in the village during a survey conducted by the police department, Chief John Konopek said during a 201617 fiscal budget presentation Monday night.

“We are looking to stay pretty much status quo [on the department budget],” Konopek said. “If we did have

the opportunity to get any additional bodies within our department, we would look to assign those two officers in a ‘cover position.’ ” Konopek said those two officers would be assigned from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., when oncall volume is higher.

The positions would help increase response times during peak hours and limit overtime staffing requirements. They also would enable the department to reassign officers to problem specific tasks.

Because of training requirements, Konopek said the earliest the officers can be on the streets solo is 2017.

But much of that decision depends on external factors, including if the state’s budget crisis gets resolved and if the village will lose out on shared income tax.

“We took a very conservative approach not knowing where the state was going to be,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said about next year’s fiscal budget.

Other items requested by the police department were three new patrol vehicles to replace some that are heading toward their life expectancy with an associated cost of $28,000 each, an $18,000 Livescan fingerprinting software update, a vehicle for the

community service officer and a pickup truck for special events and emergency response.

The Plainfield Emergency Management Agency would be looking for an increase in dues and subscriptions, an update to its radio software, and strategically moving outdoor warning sirens to cover more of the village. The current siren setup’s coverage is 90 percent of the village, with the remaining 10 percent mostly uninhabited farmland.

Konopek also presented the results of a citizen’s sur-

vey that found 93 percent of respondents “felt safe and secure” in Plainfield.

Despite the recent string of high-profile incidents, such as a murder-suicide and substantial drug bust, Konopek said the survey was telling of the village’s low crime profile, which he credited to a combination of the police department, planning department and other village entities.

About 75 percent of respondents felt that the overall performance of village police was “positive and above average,” with another 17 percent stating police performance was “at an acceptable level.”

1 dead, 2 charged after Joliet stabbing

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man died Monday after reportedly being stabbed Sunday night over a drug dispute.

Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said a brawl was reported about 10 p.m. in the 2900 block of Reflection Court and police arrived to find Rudy Valdez, 25, lying in a yard on nearby Horizon Court.

“He had multiple stab wounds to the stomach and was unresponsive,” Roechner said.

Valdez was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he died at 4:50

p.m. Monday, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

Several wit- Rodolfo nesses said Ro- Trujillo dolfo Trujillo, 19, and Oracio Loera, 20, had been beating the victim and Trujillo left the fight holding a knife, Oracio Loera Roechner said.

“Trujillo was upset with the victim over a $40 purchase of bad marijuana,” Roechner said.

Trujillo and Loera, who both reside in the block where the fight occurred, were arrested. Trujillo was charged with attempted murder and mob action prior to Valdez’s death while Loera was charged with aggravated battery and mob action. Police expected Trujillo now will face murder charges once the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office reviews the case.

Roechner said a black Jeep that sped away from Reflection Court after the stabbing was involved in a traffic crash minutes later at routes 59 and 126 in Plainfield. A 19-year-old Joliet man in the Jeep had a stab wound to his pelvis that

was not life threatening, and he was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

“That individual is a friend

of Trujillo and Loera’s and may have been [stabbed] accidentally during the melee,” Roechner said.

Homer Glen lawyer representing himself in murder-for-hire case gets trial date

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Homer Glen attorney accused of trying to put out a hit on his wife from the county jail is expected to face trial next month.

Robert W. Gold-Smith asked Judge Daniel Rozak on Monday to put his case on the trial calendar for Dec. 7. Gold-Smith indicated he probably will seek a bench trial after he learns later this week which judge will hear the case. Rozak, who assigns felony cases, told Gold-Smith last month he will not schedule any trials for his own court call for the rest of the year.

In November 2010, GoldSmith’s then-wife sought an order of protection after he grabbed her by the hair and

punched her in the face as they walked out of a courtroom, according to police.

He has been locked up since March 2011 for allegedly violating that order of protection and approaching jail inmates to have her killed. Gold-Smith is representing himself on a charge of solicitation of murder and faces six to 30 years in prison, if convicted.

It appeared from Monday’s scheduling request that GoldSmith would prefer to take his chances with a different judge, however Rozak has identified “some issues” with the evidence against him during previous court proceedings.

Gold-Smith has testified former jail inmate Brian K. McDaniel whispered into the wire he was wearing – imper-

sonating Gold-Smith, and that McDaniel lied to the grand jury for leniency in his own case. Rozak has noted there is no surveillance video to confirm McDaniel was talking with Gold-Smith when the tape was made and the paper the address was being written on during the alleged conversation does not exist. McDaniel is serving time in the Illinois River Correctional Center for 2013 theft and shoplifting convictions – his 14th and 15th convictions, according to the Department of Corrections.

While scheduling, Rozak asked Gold-Smith how long he expected the trial to last.

“I don’t know about [the prosecution’s] case. I’ll need about three days for my case,” Gold-Smith said.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – An 84-year-old woman had several pieces of jewelry stolen during a ruse burglary last month.

About 4 p.m. Oct. 27, a man came to a residence in the 2600 block of Star Lite Drive and told the victim he’d bought the house across the street and needed a bucket of hot soapy water, Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said. The man began filling a bucket at the kitchen sink, but kept

claiming it wasn’t getting hot enough.

“The victim told the man he either had to take the one or none at all,” Hoffmeyer said. “The man then began speaking to her about ‘liking the chair in her living room’ and asked if he could go into her living room.”

The man left when the woman refused, and she later discovered jewelry had been taken from her bedroom.

The man was described as Hispanic, 5-foot 9-inches tall and 200 pounds with dark hair and light skin, according to police reports.

School district settles federal court case Lawsuit became expensive for both parties

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – After a legal battle that lasted close to a year and a half, Fairmont School District 89 officials and a former employee have reached a settlement.

The case began May 7, 2014, when former Curriculum Coordinator Debra Acanfora filed a federal lawsuit against the Board of Education and Sup e r i n t e n d e n t Debra Sonya Whitak- Acanfora er the day she was fired.

Board Vice President Joseph Ryan said in a statement last year Acanfora’s contract Sonya was terminated Whitaker because she removed a document from the school office without authorization.

Acanfora alleged District 89 officials violated her due

process rights in the course of her dismissal and that Whitaker was an abusive boss. District officials in turn denied those allegations and filed a counterclaim that alleged she took school documents and refused to return them.

The two parties agreed to a settlement in early October after a long court battle that was expensive for both. Since the lawsuit began, the board gained new members and switched leadership after the April 7 election.

As part of the settlement, Acanfora, Whitaker and board members agreed to withdraw their allegations in the case. The board agreed to pay Acanfora and her former attorneys about $7,450 and $13,976 through the district’s insurer.

Acanfora said she was thrilled district officials are focusing on the students – many of whom come from low-income families – and staff and not spending more time on litigation. She said she was eager to settle as far back as March.

“I’m happy it’s over,” she

said.

Whitaker said she was proud of the work she and board members did to “vigorously defend” themselves throughout the process.

“We were making progress every step of the way. I am grateful we were able to defend ourselves as long as we could,” she said.

She said Acanfora’s allegations against her and the board are “completely false.”

Board President Katie Ulmer declined to comment on the case and deferred to the district’s attorneys.

In an Oct. 8 statement, she stated in settling the litigation the “Board and the Superintendent do not admit any wrongdoing,” and that they were prepared to file a motion for summary judgment that would have resulted in dismissal of the case.

In two lawsuits last year – one that amended the previous – Acanfora alleged district officials violated her due process rights in the course of her suspension and dismissal, violated her employment contract and that Whitaker

had physically and verbally abused her.

District officials’ attorneys – selected by their insurer AIG – denied the allegations and in a counterclaim alleged Acanfora removed a certified mail receipt in the school office and took school documents that she refused to return. In a response to the counterclaim, Acanfora’s attorneys denied those allegations.

Last summer, the two parties participated in a settlement conference but failed to come to an agreement.

The district’s attorneys also requested U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle dismiss three claims from Acanfora, which Norgle granted.

The case was proving expensive for both parties. In July, Acanfora’s attorneys withdrew and she said it was because their costs were not financially feasible for her.

Whitaker said the case was becoming too expensive for the district’s insurer, which paid for legal support.

She said she feels confident District 89 would have prevailed if it had the financial support to continue the case. Both parties initially anticipated a seven-day trial

Under Tuminello’s budget, homeowners with a $200,000 home would have saved $6 on the district’s portion of their property tax bill.

Commissioner Chuck Maher, R-Naperville, said he voted for the proposal because it “doesn’t make sense to lose that kind of revenue” when the tax rate still is lower than last year’s rate.

Commissioner Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, also voted against the proposal.

“People are being taxed out of their homes for the most part. Some people think it’s only 50 cents, it’s only a dollar [savings]. It seems like it doesn’t matter. But it adds up,” Balich said. “It’s about the philosophy behind it.”

“We’re a good resource for families that need some type of assistance,” she said.

She said school districts should embrace diversity and make sure their information is geared toward everyone in the language they understand.

“We need to be able to embrace every culture,” she said.

JOLIET – Whether the Forest Preserve District of Will County should figure in the value of new construction when calculating the district’s tax revenue will be up for debate Thursday.

If approved, the district would generate an additional $152,560 in property tax revenue for the 2016 budget with new construction valued at $215.8 million, said John Gerl, the district’s chief financial officer.

That additional revenue would be used to pay for rising health care costs, preserve and infrastructure improvements, and post-employee benefits costs. Some of the revenue also will go toward the district’s contingency fund, he said.

The district’s Finance Committee was split on the propos-

al, 8-6, last week. The full board is scheduled to vote Thursday.

Regardless of the capture of newly developed property, the owner of a home valued at $200,000 would experience a savings of $5.50 on the district’s portion of the tax bill because the rate still is lower than last year, Gerl said.

“Just because you’re collecting more revenue, that doesn’t mean you’re raising taxes. What we have here is a larger tax base,” Gerl said.

But the move to include new construction was opposed

by Finance Committee Chairman Ray Tuminello. He, along with five others, voted against the proposal during last week’s committee meeting.

Last month, that same committee approved a spending plan that calls for no increases in the district’s $35.5 million tax levy.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 13, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon.

Cremation rites will follow.

David W. Taylor, 58, passed away at his residence in Joliet on September 26, 2015, after a battle with cancer.

He was born December 19, 1956, to Walter J. Taylor and Kathleen M. Taylor and spent his life in the New Lenox and Joliet area.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandmother, Dolores Torkelson and is survived by brothers, Steven Taylor of CA, Phillip Taylor (Rebecca) of Morris IL, Frank Taylor of Wilmington IL and Michael Taylor of Morris IL. He is also survived by his Uncle Joel (Jimmy) Sinkay of CA; his Aunt Patricia Norton of Joliet IL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Lincoln Way High School in New Lenox, IL. David was a member of Local 184 Painters and Tapers Union and worked many years as a drywall taper. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing from Hickory Creek and watching football. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

ILLINOIS ROUNDUP U of Illinois fires athletic director after athlete allegations

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois fired athletic director Mike Thomas on Monday, saying he had done nothing wrong but a change was needed after the department was plunged into crisis when football and women’s basketball players said they had been mistreated by their coaches.

Thomas, who will be paid $2.5 million to buy out the remainder of his contract, said he believes he acted appropriately but accepts the decision.

“I believe it is a good time to turn the page and put the focus of this organization back on the success and welfare of our student-athletes,” Thomas said in a prepared statement.

Thomas is the latest high-profile leader to be swept aside in the turmoil at the university’s flagship campus this year, after the resignation of one of his top backers, chancellor Phyllis Wise, and the August firing of football coach Tim Beckman.

The school also released final reports, more than 1,200 pages in all, on independent investigations into the allegations. The football report found Beckman pressured players to play hurt, sometimes profanely questioned their toughness in front of other players, and interfered in medical decisions. That echoed details that were disclosed when he was fired.

The latest women’s basketball investigation found no evidence to back up allegations from seven former players that, among other things, some were pressured to play hurt.

Rauner, business, labor agree on benefit changes

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner said his administration reached an agreement with business groups and unions on a framework for changes to Illinois’ unemployment insurance system.

The agreement would deny benefits to laid-off workers in certain cases, such as providing false information on an employment application and damaging an employer’s property through gross negligence.

The three sides said in a joint statement Monday the framework also would allow laid-off workers who are eligible for Social Security to receive a full unemployment benefit. Under current Illinois law, half of the amount older workers receive for Social Security is deducted from unemployment benefits.

The agreement needs General Assembly approval.

Medical marijuana dispensaries begin sales Monday

CHICAGO – Regulated medical marijuana sales began Monday in Illinois with patients flocking to state-licensed retail shops in five cities.

Of 23 states with medical marijuana programs, Illinois has one of the most restrictive, requiring patients to undergo fingerprint-based background checks, limiting qualifying health conditions, mandating testing for pesticides and banning home-grown pot.

a change in governors delayed the launch. The pilot program expires in 2017.

Patients must register with the state where they want to buy.

Federal and state laws prohibit taking marijuana across state lines.

AG Madigan seeks probe of Peoples Gas project

CHICAGO – Attorney General Lisa Madigan asked Illinois’ utility regulator on Monday to investigate an “out of control” gas pipe replacement project her office estimates could cost Peoples Gas customers in Chicago about $8 billion.

Her office filed petitions Monday with the Illinois Commerce Commission, which could lead

to fines. One petition before the commission seeks a review of whether Peoples Gas violated a public utility law by withholding project cost estimates. The other asks for an overall review of the company’s long-term Accelerated Main Replacement Program, which is swapping out aging pipes under Chicago streets.

Madigan pointed to an ICC audit earlier this year outlining major issues with management, overspending, effectiveness and safety.

“There is simply no evidence Peoples Gas is trying to reasonably control costs that their customers must pay,” Madigan said at a news conference where she called the project “out of control.”

Rauner changes course on child care requirements

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration is changing course and revising eligibility requirements for a state child care assistance program.

During the summer, the firstterm Republican governor severely restricted eligibility because there’s no state budget. But on Monday, Rauner spokesman Lance Trover said eligibility will rise to 162 percent of the federal poverty level.

He said it’s the result of “bipartisan discussions with legislators.”

According to Trover, copays will remain intact but the administration is lifting other restrictions pending further review. Rauner’s administration also will form a task force to look at the program’s stability. The program gives low-income working parents access to child care based on a sliding scale.

Legislation restoring cuts to the program is pending in Springfield.

NATION BRIEFS Lawyer: Body cam showed no threats as police killed boy

MARKSVILLE, La. – A police body camera recorded the father of a 6-year-old autistic boy with his hands up and posing no threat as police fired into his car, severely wounding the motorist and killing his son, the man’s lawyer said Monday.

“This was not a threatening situation for the police,” said Mark Jeansonne, an attorney for Chris Few, who remained hospitalized and could not attend Monday’s funeral of his son, Jeremy Mardis.

Derrick Stafford, 32, of Mansura, and Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, of Marksville, were ordered held on $1 million bonds Monday on second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges, Jeansonne said.

The lawyer said he hasn’t seen the video himself, but its contents were described during the hearing. Louisiana’s state police chief, Col. Mike Edmonson, said Friday that “it’s the most disturbing thing I’ve seen – and I will leave it at that.”

SeaWorld to end orca shows in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – SeaWorld’s orca shows at the company’s San Diego park will end by 2017, its top executive said Monday, citing customer feedback at the location that has suffered from its lowest attendance of all its theme parks.

CEO Joel Manby told investors the park will offer a different kind of orca experience, starting

in 2017, that will focus on the animal’s natural setting and its behaviors. He said the decision would be limited for now to its San Diego park.

Fraternity files $25M suit against Rolling Stone

RICHMOND, Va. – The fraternity that was the focus of a debunked Rolling Stone article about a gang rape filed a $25 million lawsuit against the magazine Monday, saying the piece made the frat and its members “the object of an avalanche of condemnation worldwide.”

The complaint, filed in Charlottesville Circuit Court, also names Sabrina Rubin Erdely as a defendant. It is the third filed in response to the November 2014 article entitled “A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA.” Three individual fraternity members and recent graduates of the University of Virginia are suing for at least $225,000 each, and a university associate dean who claims she was portrayed as the “chief villain” is suing the magazine for more than $7.5 million.

The article described in chilling detail a student’s account of being raped by seven men at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house in September 2012. It portrayed university officials as insensitive and unresponsive to the plight of the student, who was identified only as Jackie, and suggested the attack was emblematic of a culture of sexual violence at the elite public university.

University of Missouri president, chancellor leave amid race tension

By SUMMER BALLENTINE and JIM SUHR The Associated Press COLUMBIA, Mo. – The president of the University of Missouri system and the head of its flagship campus resigned Monday with the football team and others on campus in open revolt over what they saw as indifference to racial tensions at the school.

President Tim Wolfe, a former business executive with no previous experience in academic leadership, took Tim Wolfe “full respon sibility for the frustration” students expressed and said their complaints were “clear” and “real.”

For months, black student groups had complained that Wolfe was unresponsive to racial slurs and other slights on the overwhelmingly white main campus of the state’s four-college system. The complaints came to a head

two days ago, when at least 30 black football players announced they would not play until the president left. A graduate student went on a weeklong hunger strike.

Wolfe’s announcement came at the start of what had been expected to be a lengthy closed-door meeting of the school’s governing board.

“This is not the way change comes about,” he said, alluding to recent protests, in a halting statement that was simultaneously apologetic, clumsy and defiant. “We stopped listening to each other.”

He urged students, faculty and staff to use the resignation “to heal and start talking again to make the changes necessary.”

Hours later, the top administrator of the Columbia campus, Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin, announced he would step down at the end of the year and shift to leading research efforts.

The school’s undergraduate population is 79 percent white and 8 percent black.

The state is about 83 percent

white and nearly 12 percent black.

In response to the race complaints, Wolfe had taken little public action and made few statements. As students leveled more grievances this fall, he was increasingly seen as aloof, out of touch and insensitive to their concerns.

He soon became the protesters’ main target.

In a statement issued Sunday, Wolfe acknowledged that “change is needed” and said the university was working to draw up a plan by April to promote diversity and tolerance. But by the end of that day, a campus sit-in had grown in size, graduate student groups planned walkouts and politicians began to weigh in.

After the resignation announcement, students and teachers in Columbia hugged and chanted.

At a news conference Monday, head football coach Gary Pinkel said his players were concerned with the health of Jonathan Butler, who had not eaten for a week as part of protests against Wolfe.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels rose to nearly 398 parts per million, from 396 ppm in 2013, WMO said.

The CO2 level fluctuates throughout the year, and the monthly average crossed the symbolic 400 ppm threshold in March 2015. The WMO said the annual average “is likely to pass 400 ppm in 2016.”

Pushed by the burning of coal, oil and gas for energy, global CO2 levels are now 143 percent higher than before the industrial revolution.

Scientists say that’s the main driver of global warming.

WMO said methane levels reached a new high of about 1,833 parts per billion in 2014.

About 40 percent of methane emissions come from natural sources and about 60 percent from human activities such as cattle breeding, rice agriculture and the extraction of fossil fuels.

“Every year, we report a new record in greenhouse gas concentrations,” WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said. “We have to act now to slash greenhouse gas emissions if we are to have a chance to keep the increase in temperatures to manageable levels.”

World governments are meeting in Paris at the end of this month to craft a new U.N. pact to rein in greenhouse gas emissions. More

than 150 countries – including top greenhouse gas polluters China, the United States, the European Union and India – have pledged to cut or curb their emissions in the next decade.

Meanwhile, climate change already is transforming the Earth, melting Arctic sea ice, intensifying heat waves and warming and acidifying the ocean.

Climate scientists say if global warming continues unabated, its dangerous effects could include the flooding of coastal cities and island nations, disruptions to agriculture and drinking water, the spread of diseases and the extinction of species.

STOCKHOLM – This year is on track to be a record 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than the 19th-century average, hitting a symbolic milestone in the temperature rise that scientists blame mostly on human activities, Britain’s weather service said Monday.

To measure global warming, scientists compare today’s temperature level with that of the latter part of the 19th century, when record keeping began and before humans started burning fossil fuels on a large scale, releasing heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air.

A rise of 1 degree C is important because it’s halfway to the 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) that governments have set as a limit to avoid dangerous levels of warming.

The British Met Office said global temperatures in January-September were 1.02 C above the 1850-1900 average, adding that the remainder of

the year is expected to remain hot because of the El Nino weather phenomenon.

“We’ve had similar natural events in the past, yet this is the first time we’re set to reach the 1 degree C marker, and it’s clear that it is human influence driving our modern climate into uncharted territory,” said Stephen Belcher, director of the Met Office Hadley Centre for climate science.

Met Office officials noted it doesn’t mean every year from now will be at least 1 degree warmer, as natural variability will still play a role.

The World Meteorological Organization, the U.N. weather agency, is expected to release its assessment of this year’s temperatures later this month, combining the Met Office numbers with data from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. On Monday, WMO reported that levels of carbon dioxide and methane, the two most important greenhouse gases, reached record highs last year, continuing the warming

To the Editor: All veterans matter, living or deceased. They all deserve our everlasting gratitude.

Soon it will be Veterans Day. Can we, as everyday people, imagine what veterans think about? When a man or a woman puts on their uniform, they never know where they will be sent, and if they ever will come home.

The wounded warriors have many obstacles to overcome.

Some veterans are wounded physically, some are wounded mentally. You do not always see mental wound, but it is always there, hidden.

My knowledge of a wound-

ed mind has empowered and carried me a lifetime. It is addiction. There are many different addictions. There is help now for many returning.

Years ago, only physical wounds were addressed. Many men and women came home years ago with wounded minds because of their exposure to war. The horror of their friends killed in front of their face remain forever with them. Many 12-step programs (much needed) always are available as a solemn fortress.

I recently read a true story of one of our (living) 91-year-old veterans who witnessed his buddy killed. When he went back to retrieve him, his body

was composed and covered with maggots. Can we, as protected Americans, ever conceive such valor?

My eyes fill with tears as I write and reminisce some of my husband’s (small) combat stories. What can I, or we, as a grateful country give them back, what they so much deserve?

Our wounded warriors – some forgotten, some homeless, some beaten inside and out – are forever in our hearts. All veterans are heroes, alive or dead, every day, not just on Veterans Day. Is “thank you” adequate or sufficient? Is “thank you” enough?

Will high-level meeting lead to budget movement?

The concept of a public meeting Nov. 18 by the four legislative leaders and the governor sounds nice, but will it actually move the ball forward and break the months-long governmental impasse?

As you probably know, a group of good-government types recently called on the state’s leaders to sit down and talk about solving the state’s budget issues. The four tops and the governor haven’t met as a group since late May. House Speaker Michael Madigan quickly accepted and then suggested the meeting be held in public. The move has quite a few people scratching their heads because nobody expects anything will be solved while the public is looking on.

So, why bother?

A big reason is the Democrats want the public to see what they’ve been seeing with their own eyes for months.

The governor walks in, they say, exchanges pleasantries, then repeats the same basic talking points he’s been making since April.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Top Democratic sources said Rauner cannot talk in detail about much of his Turnaround Agenda. They’ve asked relatively uncomplicated questions about tort reform, for example, and claim they’ve been met with empty stares.

“They can prep [Rauner] on the budget for the next month, and it won’t do any good,” fretted a top Republican shortly after Madigan suggested a public meeting.

It’s not that the governor isn’t bright. He is a very smart man. It’s just that he never has been a detail guy. And a big part of the problem with these negotiations is many of the topics are nothing but details.

Even the far more experienced Madigan might be able to delve down only a couple of levels into the workers’ comp issue, but he doesn’t have the expertise to go much deeper than that, Democrats admit.

What they need to do is set up some expert committees and let them deal with the details. But the experts can’t do that until the tops give them some sort of direction, and

Anyway, back to the upcoming meeting.

Rauner did his level best the other day to once again tamp down expectations ahead of the meeting. “I don’t think it’s going to matter much,” the governor said, noting correctly that people don’t like to compromise in front of cameras.

Rauner and his legislative allies have been insisting the governor be allowed to set the agenda, which has some of the good-government reformers who initially proposed the sit-down worried that Rauner would attempt to hijack the meeting and insist on talking only about his Turnaround Agenda, which he wants resolved before he will negotiate the budget. The agenda includes some harshly anti-union proposals on

collective bargaining, as well as some unacceptable (to Democrats and unions) changes in the workers’ compensation program and things such as term limits and redistricting reform.

But Rauner also said something last week which went almost completely unnoticed. He told reporters he was planning a “comprehensive agenda” for the meeting.

“We will include structural reform in the agenda,” Rauner said (predictably, since that’s code for his Turnaround stuff), and then said, “We will include revenue and taxes on the agenda, we’ll include spending levels on the agenda.”

The idea may be to put the Democrats on the spot and finally make them talk about what taxes they want to raise.

Madigan reiterated his support for new revenues recently in Chicago. “The No. 1 problem facing the government of the state of Illinois is the state budget deficit,” he said for the millionth time, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Which means that we have to

get together to talk, negotiate, do some cuts and do some new revenue. There should be a balanced approach.”

Madigan, however, never has said specifically what “new revenue” he actually would back, and neither has his fellow Democrat, Senate President John Cullerton.

The governor’s people have been quietly pointing out this glaring omission for the past several days.

Rauner told top Democrats during a private meeting months ago he would be willing to raise the income tax to 4.75 percent, which is a percentage point higher than its current level, if he got what he wanted on the Turnaround Agenda. The Democrats have not yet accepted that proposal and apparently have been waiting for the governor to make his offer public.

I doubt anything gets done, but it might be fun to watch.

Ferguson provides spark in return to Illini VIEWS Dick Goss Yes, the University of Illinois offense missed Joliet Catholic graduate Josh Ferguson for the month he was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

As Illini coach Bill Cubit told reporters after Saturday’s 48-14 victory over Big Ten foe Purdue: “You can tell the difference in our offense when Fergie is in there. ... On third downs, he just makes things happen.”

Against a Boilermakers defense that included defensive end Evan Panfil (Lincoln-Way Central), the senior running back returned from the injury, rushed for 133 yards in 12 carries and caught six passes for 41 yards and a touchdown.

For the season, Ferguson has 514 rushing yards and is averaging 6.2 a carry. He also has 18 receptions for 119 yards. He has scored five touchdowns as the Illini (5-4) make their bid to be bowl eligible.

CLASS 3A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATE FINALS PREVIEW: JOLIET CATHOLIC

By CURT HERRON JOLIET – Whenever a team assures itself of a trophy with a top-four state finish, you know something special is taking place.

But hearing from a variety of players as to why their squad is unique often takes on a different perspective depending on an individual’s experience or age.

To get a better understanding as to why the Joliet Catholic’s girls volleyball team earned a trophy for a second straight season and an eighth time in 13 years, here are three viewpoints from players who will be competing in this weekend’s Class 3A finals.

Senior Addy Alt was a member of last year’s team that fell in the championship match to St. Francis. She’ll be playing the final matches of her career Friday and Saturday at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal.

“Winning the supersectional was not only amazing because we’re going downstate, but it also guaranteed me and the other seniors on our team two more volleyball games,” Alt said. “After that, we’re done – which is crazy – but at the same time, all good things must come to an end. We’ve obviously had our ups and downs this season, but to be where we’re at right now, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.

“Last year, it surprised everyone that we went downstate and placed second. So the seniors know the feeling and what we have to do. We know how to play in the postseason from last year’s experience, and I think that we’re doing all of the things that we should be doing now. In the postseason, things have clicked; and we realize that if we lose, we’re done, especially for the seniors. We want to end on a high note – we want to end with that state trophy.”

“This year has given me a lot of opportunities to become better and be part of such a great experience and team,” Testa said. “They’re really loving and are like a family to me.

No matter who you are, everyone is treated the same, and we’re all just best friends. The seniors treat everyone else

the same, and we don’t look at each other as to how old we are – we just look as each other as teammates.

“Last year gave me hope since it showed that we could really do it and got me real excited for this season. When Megan (Cladis) got hurt, I think it brought us all together as a team to just work harder.

The key to our team is friendship – it’s really important to have friendship on and off of the court. Our chemistry is

just so good, and we’re all best friends. Of course, we want to win, but the most important thing when we go downstate is to have fun.”

Sophomore Sarah Nahas may be one of the youngest players on the squad, but she also has made her presence felt in the attack. She’s hoping this special season is capped by a second-straight trip to the championship, with the Angels prevailing this time.

I think that we all just love each other so much and are all so hard-working, and we trust the player who’s next to us to get the job done. It’s really nice to be able to rely on your teammates so much.”

The words of Roman dictator Julius Caesar pretty much summed up Saturday’s visit of Lincoln-Way West coach Dave Ernst and his football Warriors to the Metro-East section of St. Louis. In a dominating performance on both sides of the ball, the Warriors dismantled Mississippi Valley Conference champion Troy Triad, 31-7, in a Class 5A second-round game.

Next up for West is the 3 p.m. Saturday quarterfinal at home against Peoria.

Senior running back Gabe Montalvo rushed for 209 yards on 20 carries, scoring his 26th, 27th and 28th touchdowns. The offensive line of Bryan Brokop (Nebraska), Justin Witt (North Carolina State), Nate Henry, Brett Bergman, Jason Lucinski and tight end Ben Zordani had a strong performance.

Quarterback Connor Lowman returned from a shoulder injury to pass for 147 yards including a 51-yard scoring strike to standout wide receiver Jake Mauney.

The defense, led by Cortez Michalski, Deven Reed and Trey Telez, shut down the vaunted Triad triple-option offense. Daniel Wainwright, Matt Murphy, Josh Bohne and Trevor Schmidt all assisted in

A potential 17-yard Centralia touchdown pass with 12 seconds left was called back because of holding. A final desperation pass fell incomplete to end the game.

Wide receiver Jason Bennett (42 catches, 832 yards, nine touchdowns) also went down with a second-half injury and did not return.

With the Warriors’ win and Joliet Catholic’s 47-15 rout of East Suburban Conference rival Marian Central, the dream of an all-Joliet area state championship game is two JCA victories and two West victories away from coming to fruition.

JCA will visit ESCC rival Nazareth (9-2) in another Class 5A quarterfinal at 1 pm. Saturday in LaGrange Park.

Cutler broke the franchise record for touchdown passes when he found Martellus Ben-

nett for a 1-yard score midway through the second quarter.

Cutler had been tied with Hall of Famer Sid Luckman with 137 with the Bears. Cutler began his career with the Broncos. Luckman threw his final touchdown pass as a member of the Bears on Sept.

SAN DIEGO – Zach Miller made a one-handed grab of a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jay Cutler with 3:19 to go, and the Bears beat the San Diego Chargers, 22-19, on Monday night.

Cutler, who overcame an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble to throw for 345 yards, calmly led the Bears on the winning 10-play, 80-yard drive after the Chargers opened a 19-14 lead on rookie Josh Lambo’s 22yard field goal.

Miller made a leaping grab with his right hand and scored. Rookie Jeremy Langford, subbing for the injured Matt Forte, ran in the 2-point conversion.

It was the first lead for Bears, who scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Cutler’s two TD passes broke the franchise record, giving him 139 with the Bears.

He had been tied with Hall of Famer Sid Luckman.

The Bears (3-5) snapped a two-game losing streak.

San Diego (2-7) lost its fifth straight.

Cutler never wavered in another tight game for the Bears. He continually attacked San Diego’s depleted secondary, completing 27 of 40 passes.

Bulls pull away in 2nd half vs. winless 76ers

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA – Nikola Mirotic had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Pau Gasol scored 16 points to lead the Bulls past the winless Philadelphia 76ers, 11188, on Monday night.

The Bulls played without Joakim Noah and still cruised to a 15-point lead in the first quarter. They eventually stretched the lead to 26 points. Doug McDermott scored 18 points and Derrick Rose had 12.

Philadelphia (0-7) has lost 17 straight games dating to March 27. The 17-game skid matches the fourth-longest mark in franchise history, and three of those lengthy losing streaks have come since the start of the 201314 season.

‘Lack-of-sleep epidemic is going on’ CDC, Joliet pediatrician recommend schools start later in the day

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Evan Gagnon, a senior at Morris Community High School, laughed at the idea of getting 8½ to 9½ hours of sleep a night.

“There are a lot of other things like homework and extracurriculars taking up time when I could be sleeping,” Gagnon said.

Schools start too early in the day, more health professionals say, and that is causing children to get too few hours of sleep.

A good, long night’s sleep is especially important for teenagers, according to research, whose bodies and minds particularly need that recuperation time.

“A lack-of-sleep epidemic is going on,” said Dr. Paul Aschinberg, pediatrician at Aschinberg Pediatrics in Joliet. “[Teenagers] are not getting anywhere near the amount of sleep they need.”

The average start time of schools in the U.S. is 8:03 a.m., according to a recent report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fewer than one in five middle and high schools begin the school day at the recommended 8:30 a.m. start time, the report stated, which is one of the major reasons only two out of three high school students get sufficient sleep.

Aschinberg said not getting the recommended amount of sleep can cause several health problems, including a less-efficient immune system, altered menstrual cycles, chronic headaches, changes in mood and demeanor, lowered energy and concentration levels, an increase in anxiety and a heightened risk for depression.

Other conditions associated with teens and a lack of sleep, according to the CDC, include such health risks as being overweight, drinking

alcohol, smoking tobacco and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends adolescents get 8½ to 9½ hours of sleep on school nights.

“I think people underestimate the importance of sleep on their children,” Aschinberg said, “especially with adolescents.”

Sleep cycles of teenagers are shifted later, he added, and it has been found that they do far better in their classes that begin later in the day than the ones early in the morning.

“It’s much better for high schools to start later in the morning,” Aschinberg said.

“Maybe 10 a.m.”

For instance, Gagnon is active in soccer, band, Scouts and speech team, and many times doesn’t get home until later in the evening, when he grabs a bite to eat then tackles his homework. He said he

However, he does maintain good academics.

His sister, Sarah Gagnon, 15, is able to get a little more sleep, although she does admit to staying up late now and then on her computer or Nook.

“I get enough sleep to function,” Sarah said, “about six or seven hours a night because I stay up late for homework and entertainment reasons.”

Their mother, Tina Gagnon, thinks 8½ to 9½ hours of sleep is a great idea, but it’s challenging to meet when teens face three hours or more of homework a night – and that’s on top of extracurricular activities, which Tina thinks are important.

“They want to be involved in things,” Tina said, “and we want them to be well-rounded.”

Tina said she and her

husband try to get their four children who are still at home – one is in college – to bed early, and said they function better with sufficient rest, but early bedtime is not always possible.

Stephanie Chapman of Mazon said meeting those recommended sleep hours would be difficult for her three teens.

Her older children are on the bus by 7 a.m. and sometimes don’t get home from school until 5:45 p.m., or 7 p.m. if they have a game. They usually are in bed by 10 p.m. and up at 6 p.m.

Chapman said they are lucky in that they don’t have much homework at night, but they do occasionally stay up late to read. She does feel the CDC is probably right about its sleep recommendations for teens.

“However, I don’t know how many nights that’s actually possible,” Chapman said.

Joliet celebrates 60th anniversary Twenty-six people attended from JOLIET – The Center for Disability Dwight Fire, Dwight EMS, Odell Fire, Services celebrated its 60th anniversary Reddick Fire and the Limestone Fire with a dinner Oct. 6 at the Knights of Department.

Clients, guardians, Scott Hagemann, who is the business employees and guests attended the development manager of LifeStar for event. the central region, taught the classroom Clients were awarded for years in the portion and coordinated the hands-on adult services program. Larry Burich Students learned about Air Methods, was honored with the 2015 Melvin J. which operates the LifeStar helicopter Larson Award for his continued support and its capabilities. Air Methods operates for the organization. from Alaska to Key West and runs out of

more than 300 bases located throughout 48 states.

Firefighters and EMS personnel learned about the importance of calling early to get the helicopter to the scene to help save more lives. Students also learned how to set up a proper landing zone, identify possible hazards and how to communicate via radio with the incoming helicopter.

Training was held at the Dwight Fire Station, and the landing was at the newly acquired training facility at the closed women’s correctional facility just west of Dwight.

Rasmussen College opens surgical suite in Romeoville/Joliet Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college and public benefit corporation, recently launched a

A graduate of Evanston’s Kendall College of Culinary Arts, Barthel has worked for the Tower Garden in Skokie and alongside his dad for 15 years as the owner of Café 36 in LaGrange.

Michael Lilleberg, sous chef, also graduated from Kendall College of Culinary Arts and has cooked at McCormick & Schmick’s, Weber Grill and Rosebud Steakhouse. While working as a sous chef at Café 36, Lilleberg developed a cohesive working relationship with Barthel.

The duo’s goals are to add new items to the menus; offer more varieties of fresh foods, including seafood; lighten up entreés; create opportunities for eating; and involve the residents in menu planning.

PLAINFIELD – The ATI Foundation will host its gala, “A Night at the Races,” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier in Chicago.

It features an evening of derby-themed fun with simulated horse racing, casino games, entertainment, auctions and raffles. Guests are asked to wear derby or cocktail attire.

Three families will be honored as special guests, including Madeline Haubert of Plainfield. Haubert was born with Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare neurological and skin disorder. The ATI Foundation provided her with an adaptive bicycle, allowing her to play and ride a bike for the first time.

Tickets are $150 a person, or $275 a couple. Tickets include dinner, drinks, entertainment, parking and “fun money” for simulated horse racing and casino games. All proceeds benefit the ATI Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children with physical impairments in need of medical and financial resources.

after the egg is fertilized, it has divided into several hundred cells. Some of these cells are called embryonic stem cells.

They have the ability to turn into any type of specialized cell in the body.

Indeed, they promptly begin to do that, and the embryo starts to form organs.

With a few exceptions, once a cell has become specialized, it will stay that way until it dies.

For decades we believed an embryonic stem cell could turn into a specialized cell, but not vice versa.

For example, suppose you needed new heart cells because of a heart attack. Until 2007, there were two problems with using embryonic stem cells to do this. First, the embryonic stem cells would come from the embryo of another human being.

Your immune system might well recognize those cells as foreign and attack them. Second, many of those embryos would have come from induced abortions, raising ethical questions.

If only you could use your own embryonic stem cells, that would solve both problems.

But of course your own embryonic stem cells existed only briefly, a long time ago, and you can’t turn back the clock.

Then, in 2007, a research breakthrough changed everything. The breakthrough basically showed that you can turn back the clock. Keep a copy of today’s column, and tune in tomorrow to see how.

Dear Dr. K: People have been talking about stem cells as a revolutionary technique for a long time.

Has anything come of it? And why has it been so controversial?

Dear Reader: You’re right; people have been excited about stem cells for nearly 25 years. Yet progress was quite slow, and some people had major ethical concerns.

But in the past eight years, progress has accelerated and the ethical issues largely have been circumvented.

Theoretically, stem cells could be used to replace cells that are killed by disease – heart cells killed in a heart attack or brain cells killed by Alzheimer’s disease. But to explain the exciting potential of stem cells, I first need to define some terms and concepts.

Each human being is made of trillions of cells.

They are grouped together into organs, such as the eye and the stomach.

Each organ contains types of specialized cells, and each type looks and acts differently.

Each of these very different cells came from just one original cell: the fertilized egg. The egg divides and keeps dividing until one cell has become trillions.

Inside every human cell are a little over 20,000 genes – the same 20,000-plus genes. The genes inside a light-sensing cell in the eye are the same as the genes in an acid-making cell in the stomach. So if both cells have the same genes, why are these two different types of specialized cells so different from each other?

What defines a specialized cell is what genes inside the cell are turned on. The eye cell and the stomach cell have different genes turned on.

Dear Abby: A year ago, I ended a turbulent fiveyear relationship with my boyfriend, “Alex,” that resulted in a special-needs child. Alex is not living in reality when it comes to our daughter’s disabilities, and his family is not present in her life.

Our daughter, “Meghan,” spent months in the hospital before she was healthy enough to come home, and Alex’s family visited only a few times.

I have tried to resolve the issues with Alex’s family so our daughter can have a relationship with them, but it is still one-sided.

Meghan’s paternal family will send a present for her birthday or Christmas, but they spend no time with her.

They have other grandchildren in other states whom his mother drives hours to see, but she won’t drive five minutes to see my daughter.

I’d like to start rejecting the gifts they send Meghan with a note explaining why. I find it disturbing that they’ll spend money on my child, but are unwilling to spend time with her. I feel the gifts are a payoff. I don’t want Meghan to feel like the odd man out when she’s old enough to realize how she is treated compared to the other grandchildren. Abby, what are your thoughts? –
