Lincoln Highway Marker – New Lenox Affectionately known as “The Main Street Across America,” the Lincoln Highway has inspired many tourists, travelers and towns along the coast-to-coast roadway to keep the legacy of Carl Fisher’s pioneering spirit alive. Since Fisher’s death in 1939, the Lincoln Highway has remained a persistent memory in the minds of many.

In the early years, sections along the roadway were only marked by posts, poles and handwritten signs. In time, there was a need to develop a better marking system to aid the traveler along the highway.

Some of the first markings were simple, merely red, white and blue bands painted on a pole. Later, a more official-looking symbol consisting of a red, white and blue rectangle with the letter “L” and the words “Lincoln Highway” were used.

It was not until the late-1920s that the Lincoln Highway was officially marked and dedicated to the memory of Abraham Lincoln. On Sept. 1, 1928, groups of Boy Scouts across America helped to place approximately 2,436 new concrete markers at sites along the route.

Weighing more than 220 pounds each, the new reinforced concrete markers measured 18 inches wide at the base and were tapered to just 8.5 inches at the top. The entire marker was 36 inches in height.

The concrete markers carried the Lincoln Highway insignia, a blue directional arrow and a bronze medallion of Lincoln’s bust with the words, “This Highway Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln.”

marker was determined by a plan laid out by Gael Hoag, Field Secretary of the Lincoln Highway. According to his plan, the markers were placed along the outer edge of the right-of-way at important crossroads, minor crossings, and at other intervals along the road to assure the motoring public they were on the correct road.

While some of these concrete markers still can be found at their original positions along the route in many states, others since have been relocated or lost forever to road enhancements, neglect or indifference on the part of local highway departments.

Still, others belong to private collectors and others have been moved to museums or been placed in positions of honor in Lincoln Highway towns across the country.

Although there only are a very few remaining in Illinois, two still can be found in Will County. One is located in the courtyard of the Joliet Area Historical Museum in Joliet, and the other is in front of Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox.

Members of the military enjoy a ‘thank you’ event at VFW

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – A Welcome Home sign hung Sunday morning from the roof eave of Cantigny VFW Post 367 in Joliet, welcoming all active and veteran members of the military to the annual pancake breakfast.

Red, white and blue helium balloons floated from the stairway handrail and made up the table centerpieces.

Past and present members of the military of all ages – from Kelsiee Vogen, a 19-yearold new recruit, to 83-year-old Velma Parker, who served in the U.S. Army in Tokyo during the Korean War – came to enjoy a homemade breakfast of pancakes, sausage and potatoes.

Vogen, a nursing student, said she was sworn in to the military just two weeks ago and leaves for boot camp Dec. 30.

She was there as a volunteer and enjoyed her time talking to the veterans. One man went to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri – the same place Vogen will head at the end of the year.

“I love it [talking with veterans],” she said. “He talked to me about what it was like back in the day.”

Vogen wants to become an MP and continue her nursing degree at a later date. She some day hopes to do both.

Joliet Councilman Jim McFarland, who volunteers at Post 367, helped organize this year’s event. He volunteered to do the legwork needed to open the doors to all military members so they could enjoy a morning of appreciation. More than 100 had sent in an RSVP to attend.

“I think we have an overwhelming response from veterans along with volunteers who wanted to help,” McFarland said. “I am proud to be able to bring [this event] back.”

A pancake breakfast is held annually around Veterans Day, but there used to be weekly ones, Post Commander Lou Smith said, who would like to see them brought back on a more regular basis.

DAV Northern District VFW Commander Lou Vargas, Joe Kocielko and Bob Brown, all retired Vietnam War veterans, sat enjoying coffee with their wives and chatting.

Everyone agreed the breakfast was tasty.

“They kept bringing back coffee, which was good,” Vargas said.

Vargas’ wife, Bernice, has been the commander of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for the

past 10 years.

Brown was happy to see a good turnout at the veterans

breakfast.

“We didn’t have that kind of a turnout when we came

back from Vietnam,” he said.

“They do it now for the younger guys. They need to be recognized for their service.”

They all agreed they really appreciate when people come up and thank them for their service.

Young people, whether they are in the military or not, now take the time to thank them, something that didn’t used to happen, Kocielko said.

The recognition that comes as a personal thankyou, pancake breakfasts or Veterans Day remembrances is all very important.

“We are getting the recognition now,” Brown said.

“That’s a good thing.”

Coal City tornado victims to receive funds Know more

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Long Term Recovery Committee in charge of distribution of the relief fund for victims of the June 22 EF3 Coal City tornado is set to distribute funds in November.

Originally, the committee hoped to have checks out by October but due to some families still registering, and the work involved for the accountants to verify and write more than 500 checks, the disbursement was slightly delayed.

“There were still people registering and we wanted an accurate count of people and donations before moving forward,” said Devan Gagliardo, program director with the Community Foundation of Grundy County. “We estimate 520 of the households effected have registered, and a majority of the funds will be

More than 800 properties were damaged by the tornado; however some residents chose not to register for assistance, according to Gagliardo.

To date, there is about

$300,000 in the fund managed by the Community Foundation. About $20,000 of that was in place before the tornado and will remain in the fund in the event of another disaster.

Community Foundation each donated $10,000 to the fund after the Diamond tornado.

The initial disbursement set to take place in a couple weeks will see $208,000 given in the form of a check to each of the registered families, according to Gagliardo.

She said that will leave the fund with money to be used for future needs.

“The remaining funds will go through the case management teams,” she said. “People will continue to receive assistance.”

So far, $346,000 has been given out in the form of assistance. Much of that amount has been through the case management agencies.

Gagliardo said letters went out Oct. 22 to registered families stating the amount they would receive and where to pick up their checks.

The checks will be distributed in person to avoid delays with mail for changed addresses, and to ensure everyone gets their check as planned.

If a check is not picked up the case management teams will reach out to the individual families to arrange pickup of the funds.

The committee is still accepting registration from affected families.

Wilmington school to offer Native American history story

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Wilmington School District 209-U will offer a new high school course focusing on Native American history, especially in the city.

“It’s one of the most exciting projects in curriculum I ever worked with,” said District 209U Superintendent Jay Plese.

District officials developed the course after speaking with

Scott Sypolt, an independent attorney who’s worked with the Chicago Blackhawks. Sypolt also is the owner of Get Fit 24/7, which has several locations in Grundy County.

Plese said Sypolt has worked with Native American tribes in the Midwest.

The course will be offered as an elective next year, Plese said.

One of the things Plese learned about Native American history himself was that a lot of it was “gleaned by Catholic priests’ diaries.”

Besides the course, Plese said there also is a project in Wilmington to build a Native American heritage center.

He said a nonprofit organization called The Blackhawks Society – which he and Wilmington Mayor J. Marty Orr are members of – is working with the Chicago Blackhawks to build the center.

The Blackhawks Society has raised funds in the past. In early October, money raised from ticket sales of the event for the Stanley Cup appearance in Wilmington went to the organization.

Shorewood contracts smoke testing for sanitary sewer system

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – If you see smoke discharges from the ground throughout Shorewood this month, it’s most likely the result of sanitary sewer tests.

The Village Board approved last week a sanitary system leak detection survey through

RJN Group to determine potential inflow points to the public portion of the sanitary sewer system. Those leakage points often lead to high flows during events such as storms and melting snow.

The survey is conducted through pressure smoke tests in the system. Potential leak points will lead to significant

smoke discharges, which are then analyzed by spotters from RJN Group to determine the leakage level.

Mayor Rick Chapman said the village survey is part of an overall test of the sanitary system, which is run by the city of Joliet.

The contract with RJN Group was approved for

$17,601.

According to a memo by RJN Group, the testing will be done by Thanksgiving in the “Long Streets” area in the village, comprising 17,601 linear feet of sanitary sewers running along rear-yard easements.

That includes sections of Black Road, Brookforest Avenue, Ridge Drive, Sunrise

Drive, Birch Drive, Carla Drive and Bethany Drive.

Non-toxic air and a smoke mix is pushed through a sewer segment through manholes.

Defects in leaky manholes, cracked main lines and laterals, and connected downspouts among other points are detected where smoke exits the ground or structure.

Church to host fair for historically black colleges Will take place Sunday at Brown Chapel AME Church

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A historically black college fair will take place Sunday at Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Representatives or alumni from more than 20 historically black colleges – which are established to serve black student – are expected to be at the Betty Mahone College Fair, which will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at Brown Chapel AME Church, 1502 E. Mills Road in Joliet.

Betty Mahone, a retired Joliet educator who has been the fair chairwoman for more than 20 years, said the fair began in 1994 after her son went to a Joliet Junior College fair and was disappointed he could not find any historically black colleges.

“Many of them are in the South, so a lot of kids don’t know about them,” Mahone said.

Her son, who graduated from Joliet Central High School in 1994, went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Morehouse College is historically an all-male black college.

Some of the historically black colleges and universities expected to be at the fair include Alabama A&M University, Howard University, Tougaloo College and Xavier University.

Other colleges and universities will be at the fair as well, such as Joliet Junior College, Columbia College in Chicago and Chicago State University.

The fair has been renamed in Mahone’s honor since she initiated the fair in 1994, but she said her son and many others were instrumental in starting it.

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Authorities are investigating the discovery of a body in a burned structure in Lockport Township.

Lockport Township Fire Protection District companies responded Saturday to a welfare check on Red Berry Circle in the Carillon Community of the fire district along with the Will County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release

issued Saturday by Fire Chief Dave Skoryi. A specific time was not given.

“Companies found the structure had a fire that had apparently burned out prior to our arrival. Sadly, a deceased resident was discovered within the structure,” the fire district said in the news release.

The Lockport Township Fire Investigation Team is investigating the incident jointly with the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Before they knew it, they had sold more than 500 shirts.

Then the shirt “movement” began to take on a life of its own, said Michael.

People started taking pictures wearing the Maddy shirts all over the place.

The shirts have made their way to Thailand, Indonesia and Israel. They’ve gone sailing and to the Kentucky Derby. They’re worn by MCHS cheerleaders, by students heading overseas and by flight attendants.

“Maddy’s seen the world,” said Michael.

Just recently, the Angus family was invited to the University of Alabama and Maddy’s father, Scott Angus, went out onto the football field wearing the shirt.

“We got her on the field at the University of Alabama,” said her mom, Eileen Angus.

Everyone was shocked at the amount of money raised from the sale of the shirts.

The entire Angus family – Eileen, Scott and sisters Sheila,

Catherine and Meg – was overwhelmed, grateful and touched.

The money raised in Maddy’s memory went on to help other area families with funeral costs and to start a scholarship fund. The family also started a Memorial Day kickball tournament, to help them through the most difficult time of year and raise money for the scholarships.

“All that money [is because of] one little girl who wanted to make a difference in this world,” said Eileen Angus. “She’s still doing it. I am so proud.”

When Michael Sayles was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma earlier this year, he wore his Maddy shirt to his first chemotherapy treatment and had it on or with him for every treatment after.

His last chemo treatment was May 11, 2015, and everything was clear at his threemonth check-up.

Michael said his doctors were amazed at how well he handled chemotherapy. He believes Maddy was with him and watching over him during them.

“I think she helped me out through it all,” he said.

The death of 18-year-old Madison “Maddy” Angus last year touched an entire community. In the wake of the sorrow and grief, a movement has arisen that is keeping her memory alive while helping others at the same time.

The Channahon teen died on Memorial Day 2014 in a one-vehicle crash along Tryon Street in Channahon as she was driving home from work.

Maddy’s good friend, Michael Sayles, decided he wanted to do something for the Angus family after her death. Michael and three other friends – Taylor Stover, Morgan Majetic and Carley Deddo – came up with the idea of printing up T-shirts at his place of employment.

“We wanted to make sure the family didn’t have to worry about expenses during that time. Or use [the money] for a few nights out so they didn’t have to cook,” Michael said.

Maddy’s dream to go to the University of Alabama was well-known by her family and friends. Her social media accounts had Crimson Tide all over them. She posted the football team’s motto “You had me at roll tide,” along with the school’s signature “A.” The group of friends designed purple T-shirts with Maddy’s favorite motto and

Musician blessed students, congregations with her skills

She studied music, taught piano and directed choirs. And yet, when the need arose, she also taught English at Providence Catholic High School, even returning to school to obtain the certification she needed to teach the subject, said Lillian’s daughter, Diane Caneva of Texas.

Why English? Probably because the school had a need for an English teacher, Diane Caneva said. Besides, she added, Lillian liked to read, especially the classics.

“When I was in the fifth and sixth grade, she was giving me Jane Austen,” Diane said.

Diane is fairly certain her mother once studied at the former Joliet Conservatory of Music in downtown Joliet.

After graduating from Joliet Township High School in 1948, where Lillian participated in

the school’s music programs, Lillian attended the College of St. Francis (now University of St. Francis) in Joliet, where she majored in music education and minored in piano.

Lillian married Ernest Caneva, who directed the Lockport Township High School band until he retired in the early 1970s and then began directing the Providence band, Diane said.

This was at the request of the school’s principal at the time – the Rev. Bishop Roger Kaffer, later an auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Joliet – because the school did not have a band program. Lillian began directing the school’s choir, which led her to also teach English, Diane Caneva said.

When Lillian’s children were young, and for decades afterward, Lillian taught piano in her home, with students arriving in 30-minute increments as soon as dinner ended.

“We did not go on family vacations. We went on band trips,” Diane said. “We played in the band and that’s what

our life was.”

In the early 1960s, Lillian taught music at Chaney Monge School in Crest Hill. She also taught at Bolingbrook High School and Ludwig School in Lockport. In time, Lillian took organ lessons and served as organist for the United Methodist Church in New Lenox and then at a church in Mokena.

“A lot of pianists learned organ to play church jobs and such, Diane said, “so that’s what she did.”

When Grace United Methodist Church in Joliet needed a director for the hand bell choir, Lillian signed up for workshops to learn hand bells and then stepped into that position, too, Diane said. Lillian easily made the transition.

“When you’re already a musician and can read music, you’re already three-quarters there,” Diane said.

As a mother, Diane said Lillian was a disciplinarian, a perfectionist, heavily invested in her children and desiring their success. As a teacher, Lil-

lian showed more flexibility, but her goals were the same.

Lillian, Diane added, loved teaching.

Diane recalled a day last summer, before Lillian’s death Sept. 12 at the age of 84, when Diane and Tom visited Lillian in the memory care facility where she was living.

Although Lillian often did not recognize her children, she could – and did – help visiting children refine their skills when they plopped down at the piano and plunked out notes.

On that particular day, a church pastor was playing a set of church hymns. When he began “How Great Thou Art,” a wonderful thing happened.

“My mother got up walked away from us and began conducting, in the middle of the room,” Diane said. “I took a video of it. It was pretty amazing to see.”

Former Sen. Fred Thompson dead at 73

By LUCAS L. JOHNSON II The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fred Thompson, a folksy former Republican U.S. senator from Tennessee who appeared in feature films and television including a role on “Law & Order,” died Sunday, his family said.

He was 73.

Thompson, at 6-foot-6 with a booming voice, appeared in at least 20 motion pictures.

His credits include “In the Line of Fire,” “The Hunt for

Red October,” “Die Hard II” and “Cape Fear.” By the early 1990s, Thompson said he had become bored with his 10-year stint in Hollywood and wanted to go into Former public service.

That’s when he Sen. Fred headed back to Thompson Nashville and launched his Senate campaign.

The family statement said Thompson died Sunday in

Nashville following a recurrence of lymphoma. It added he was surrounded by his family.

Thompson, a lawyer, alternated between politics and acting much of his adult life. Once regarded as a rising star in the Senate, he retired from that seat when his term expired in January 2003, saying he didn’t have the drive for another term.

“I simply do not have the heart for another six-year term,” Thompson said in a written statement at the time.

“Serving in the Senate has been a tremendous honor, but I feel that I have other priorities that I need to attend to.”

However, he returned to politics in 2007 by announcing that he would seek the Republican presidential nomination.

Dogged by accusations he was not a hard worker, he dropped out in January 2008 after faring poorly in the early caucuses and primaries.

“I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort,”

Thompson said.

After leaving the race, he campaigned extensively for John McCain, then sought support to become chairman of the Republican National Committee but quit that quest after a few months.

Thompson’s rise to the Senate was atypical. He had never before held public office, but he overwhelmingly won a 1994 special election for Al Gore’s old Senate seat after connecting with voters. In 1996 he easily won a six-year term.

Joan was an avid reader and enjoyed crafting including stained glass work. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and grandchildren. Police: Concealed carry license holder kills armed gunman

CHICAGO – A customer with a concealed carry license shot and killed an armed man attempting to rob a Chicago neighborhood store, police said Sunday.

A masked man walked into the store and currency exchange about 7 p.m. Saturday on the city’s southwest side, displayed a handgun and announced a robbery to an employee, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. The gunman then pointed his weapon at another employee and forced her to the back of the store.

The armed customer then fatally shot the man, identified Sunday by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as 55-year-old Reginald Gildersleeve. Other details about Gildersleeve weren’t released.

No one else was hurt during the incident. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the customer, who has not been identified, will face charges. Guglielmi said preliminary details suggest the customer was not at fault, but the case was under review by local prosecutors.

“We’re looking at it as a self-defense issue at this point,” he said.

Newspaper: Budget impasse costing state more in long run

SPRINGFIELD – Some vendors who provide Illinois services said the budget impasse costs the state more in the long run.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers cited a sample of vendors in its report.

It said companies receive more interest with long delayed payments while other companies might avoid doing business with Illinois because of the impasse.

That could lead to less competition and higher prices.

40 previous traffic citations for man accused in fatal crash

MARYVILLE – A southwestern Illinois man accused of driving drunk in a crash that left a 27-year-old woman dead had received at least 40 traffic citations in the area, including 25 that involved speeding, before the fatal crash.

Steven L. Willis, 38, of Maryville faces two counts of aggravated DUI for an Oct. 23 crash that killed

Samantha Miller as she waited with her three children along Interstate 55 after their car broke down. Her children, ages 3, 6 and 8, were in her car when it was struck, and survived.

Court records show Willis has received 40 citations in Madison and St. Clair counties since 1994, but he was convicted just twice, both times for seatbelt violations.

He was sentenced 30 times to court supervision, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

Those citations include 25 that involved speeding. Records also show charges were dismissed eight times, the newspaper reported. However, none of those citations appear on his permanent driving record.

University of Illinois works to cut back on food waste

URBANA – The University of

Illinois Urbana-Champaign is working to cut back on how much food is thrown out at its dining halls.

Data collected over the past few years by the university’s housing department has helped trim food waste, The Champaign News-Gazette reported. The university expects to keep roughly 678,000 pounds of food from being thrown out this school year.

That’s about $693,000 worth of food, making up 4 percent of the food budget.

Dining hall staffers measure how much food gets thrown out before going on students’ plates using a scale that also gives a monetary value.

“We now understand what’s being wasted, set goals and engage our employees to meet them,” said Kelly Boeger, the university’s menu management dietitian.

Staffers began realizing just

how much food is left over when mealtimes finish. So they started using smaller pans. Pre-consumer wasted food is down to about 345,000 pounds each year.

Carbondale celebrates Halloween after crackdown ends

CARBONDALE – Halloween has returned to Carbondale after a 15-year city crackdown prompted by previous holiday troubles in the home of Southern Illinois University.

The Carbondale Southern Illinoisan reported Carbondale police cited no Halloween-related problems by late Saturday night.

Carbondale Police Chief Jeff Grubbs told The Associated Press on Sunday that the relatively uneventful night was part of a “slower than normal fall weekend.”

WASHINGTON – The government’s insurance website is faster and easier to use, but as a third sign-up season gets underway, President Barack Obama’s health care law is approaching limits.

Enrollment on the federal and state exchanges began Sunday.

While the law’s expanded coverage has reduced the uninsured rate to a historic low of about 9 percent, the gains will be harder in 2016.

Supporters may feel they’re running to stay in place, rather than taking a victory lap during the president’s last full year in office. The reasons have to do with the structure of the complicated law, the effects of a major change introduced by the Supreme Court, and political divisions likely to be magnified in an election year.

The fate of the Affordable Care Act – known as “Obamacare” to its detractors – is very much in the hands of the next president.

A weak sign-up season could embolden opponents who are so far unwilling to relent.

Russian jet broke up at high altitude over Egypt

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt – The Russian jetliner that crashed shortly after takeoff from an Egyptian resort city broke up at high altitude, scattering fragments of wreckage over a wide area in the Sinai Peninsula, Russia’s top aviation official said Sunday as search teams raced to recover the bodies of the 224 people who died.

searchers in a remote part of the Sinai, seeking any clues to what caused the Metrojet Airbus A321-200 to plummet abruptly from 31,000 feet just 23 minutes after it departed from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh bound for St. Petersburg.

Aviation experts and the search teams were combing an area of more than 6 square miles to find bodies and pieces of the jet.

By midday, 163 bodies had been recovered, according to the Egyptian government. Some of the dead were expected to be flown to Russia later Sunday.

New plant tests appetite for seawater desalination

CARLSBAD, Calif. – There’s far more riding on the Americas’ largest seawater desalination plant than the 50 million gallons of drinking water it will produce for the San Diego area each day.

The plant, which opens this year, will help determine the future of seawater desalination in the U.S. The billion-dollar project is only the nation’s second major seawater plant. The first U.S. foray in Tampa Bay is widely considered a flop.

Supporters consider seawater desalination a partial answer to drought in the U.S. Opponents say high costs and threats to marine life leave better alternatives, such as recycling and conservation.

Huge by U.S. standards, Carlsbad barely cracks the International Desalination Association’s list of 50 largest seawater plants, which are mostly in the Middle East.

Woe spreads in Pennsylvania’s 4-month budget standoff

By MARC LEVY The Associated Press HARRISBURG, Pa. – State-subsidized pre-kindergarten programs are shutting down, domestic violence shelters are closing their doors, and Pennsylvania’s school districts are begging for more time to pay their bills – all because of a four-month budget stalemate that shows no signs of ending.

County governments and local school boards waiting on billions in state aid are burning through loans and emptying reserves. Some social services organizations are shuttering programs and laying off hundreds of workers who care for the state’s most vulnerable populations.

Even for Pennsylvania – a state that’s seen its share of knockdown, drag-out partisan fights – this one is particularly worrisome.

“It’s a bunch of crap, to be honest with you,” said Kathy Moyer, who was told her 4-year-old son Jake would attend his last day of pre-kindergarten Friday at the Growing Place in Brodheadsville, before other nonprofits came to the rescue to keep it open – for now.

The governor, Tom Wolf, is a first-term Democrat and former businessman unaccustomed to political deal-making who wants a multibillion-dollar tax increase to correct a long-term deficit and narrow a funding disparity between rich and poor school districts considered to be among the nation’s widest.

The Legislature’s large, entrenched Republican majorities have not budged on a tax increase. Separately, Republicans have pressed Wolf to agree to two of their top priorities: ending the traditional state pension benefit plan and the state-controlled wine and liquor system. Wolf opposes those moves.

Two shelters for domestic violence victims closed their doors to new arrivals Friday, citing the lack of state aid. A state-subsidized pre-K program at Riverview Children’s Center in the Pittsburgh suburb of Verona closed down, too.

A fellow class of Riverview pre-kindergarteners signed their teacher’s open letter to state policymakers: “We aren’t allowed to play until we solve our problems. The budget stalemate is a BIG PROBLEM. Are you working on the problem?”

Pennsylvania has seen stalemates before – most notably in 1991, 2003 and 2009 – but this is different: Public school advocates and social services providers say they are in more desperate straits now after post-Recession funding cuts enacted by Republicans.

It’s also a quieter crisis.

Under a 2009 court ruling, state employees can be paid and kept on the job, mean-

ing no state functions – such as prisons, highway patrols, state parks or driver’s license centers – are shut down, although money for expenses from travel to toilet paper is scarce, and utilities and other contractors are going unpaid.

Other provisions in federal or state law allow Medicaid, unemployment compensation and debt payments to be made.

Education officials wonder when the first school district will decide to shut down to send a signal to Harrisburg.

People who deal with the vulnerable wonder if someone has to die first.

Meanwhile, bond rating agencies are casting a critical eye on Pennsylvania, editorial writers are turning on Harrisburg, and bank loans are underwriting the paychecks for most lawmakers.

A Pittsburgh-area school district that is one of Pennsylvania’s poorest, McKeesport, has left teaching positions unfilled, ballooning elementary class sizes, and canceled tutoring and some high school electives. Bigger cuts – athletics and pre-K – may be in store, Superintendent Rula Skezas said.

teams. Two weeks from now, only one will remain. Wilmington hosts Byron this week, and Sterling Newman will clash with Bishop McNamara.

The winners of those two game will meet in the quarterfinals. Any or all of those games will be championship caliber.

Final two games speak volumes about Bolingbrook

Sure, it was nice to knockoff the top-ranked Vikings on their home field in Flossmoor. But more importantly, the 4-4 Raiders picked up their fifth win and qualified for the Class 8A playoffs. The victory extended their playoff streak

to 24 consecutive years. They would be playing in Week 10 again.

Naperville Central 14, Bolingbrook 7. After leading the DuPage Valley champion Redhawks, 7-0, at halftime, the Raiders give up a pair of second-half touchdowns and fall in their opening-round playoff game. The disappointing loss ends the All-America career of linebacker Tuf Borland. The Ohio State finished his illustrious career with 17 tackles, including two sacks.

“A great effort from us tonight. We lost to a great team,” Borland said afterward. “Defensively we played well and never quit.”

That sums up the 2015 Raiders. They never quit. The problem that haunted them was turnovers. With the two turnovers on Friday night, the Raiders committed 35 turnovers, or 3.5 per game over the course of the season.

“When we didn’t turn the ball over, we could play with anyone in the state,” Raiders defensive coordinator Dan Darlington said. “Against the best team in the state, Homewood-Flossmoor, we turned the ball over three times and still beat them, showing everyone how much talent we had.”

The Raiders lost to West Suburban Silver champion Glenbard West (9-0), Southwest Suburban Blue co-cham-

pion Lincoln-Way East (7-2), Sandburg (7-2), Lockport (4-5) and to DuPage Valley champion Naperville Central (9-1).

Against one of the toughest schedules in the state, the Raiders beat the No. 1 team in Homewood-Flossmoor, earned a playoff berth and gave another of the best teams in 8A, Naperville Central, a serious challenge in Round 1.

In 2016, almost the entire offensive line, led by center John Tyler Ivlow, returns.

The Hilltoppers will host Marian Central for the second time this season, with a 1 p.m. Saturday kickoff at Memorial Stadium. It sounds like QB Jay Cutler thinks so.

“It’s tough,” he said. “I feel bad for the guys. I know they fought hard. At this point, we can’t point fingers. We can’t listen to some of the stuff on the outside. Have to find a way to unite the guys and keep getting better each and every week.

“We have good coaches, we have good schemes. We have

to find some better ways to execute as players and find ways in the fourth quarter to close out games like this because we aren’t far away.”

I don’t know how far away they really are, but they are closer than I thought because of Cutler.

Most Bears fans and analysts were positive during the offseason that Cutler’s time in Chicago was ending and a huge problem with rebuilding would be finding the quarterback.

Cutler stacked his fourth

straight impressive performance this season against the Vikings, and it looks more likely every day that he could be the key cog in the Bears’ rebuilding process.

As frustrating as it might be to watch games such as Sunday’s slip away, all that really matters with these Bears is how many young players are improving and appear to have a chance to be part of a good Bears team in the future.

In the NFL, good teams find a way to win; bad teams find a way to lose.

We didn’t learn anything new about the Bears after watching them find a way to lose to the Minnesota Vikings, 23-20, on the final play of the game Sunday at Soldier Field, we just had it confirmed that right now they are a bad football team.

Here’s how coach John Fox spun it in the locker room afterward, “We work really hard to win. We put in a lot of time and a lot of effort. Really, at the end of the day, whether we win or lose by three or 33, it counts the same. We are what we are.”

Maybe Bears fans just need to remind themselves every Sunday that before general manager Ryan Pace and Fox arrived here, the Bears were one of the worst teams in the NFL and one of the oldest.

A near total rebuild was necessary. That process has just begun, and yet the Bears are competing almost every Sunday, in some cases against clubs that are good right now.

With the exception of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was extremely disappointing most of the day against the Bears, the Vikings are an impressive young football team that appears ready to compete for a playoff spot.

No, there absolutely are no moral victories in the NFL, but does the fact the Bears

and should remain a Bear with at least a tag for 2016.

In spite of a critical thirddown drop of a Cutler pass, Jeremy Langford flashed enough to suggest he might be the heir to Matt Forte at running back.

Among Kyle Long, Charles Leno Jr., Matt Slauson and Patrick Omameh, we saw some nice ingredients for the offensive line, and the injured Hroniss Grasu and Tayo Fabuluje continue to be intriguing, too.

On defense, we finally had a Kyle Fuller sighting, a big stick on Adrian Peterson from Adrian Amos, a decent, if not good, day from Eddie Goldman, a few more Jarvis Jenkins moments, a nice nickel look from Bryce Calahan and we know Pernell McPhee is probably the real deal.

The Bears are a bad team now, and there will be more tough losses before the year is over.

Some of these kids will take steps backward.

But what I saw against the Vikings was a ton of heart, a well-coached group and most interestingly, perhaps, a few more building blocks already in place than I thought for the second half of next year when after another offseason player shopping spree, the Bears might actually have a chance to be a good/winning football team again.

Michael Floyd had a 60yard TD catch and tight end Troy Niklas had two short TD receptions as the Cardinals overcame four turnovers and won in Cleveland (2-6) for the first time since 1985.

RAVENS 29, CHARGERS 26:

At Baltimore, Justin Tucker kicked a 39-yard field goal on the final play. Joe Flacco threw for 319 yards and ran for a score to help Baltimore (2-6) snap a three-game skid and hand the Chargers (2-6) their fourth straight defeat.

The Ravens’ six losses this season have come by a combined 30 points, and their only win before Sunday came in overtime.

Tucker’s fifth field goal came three plays after a thirddown pass interference call against Steve Williams moved the ball 21 yards to the San Diego 22.

San Diego’s Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes

and went 28 for 37 for 301 yards, his franchise-record fifth consecutive 300-yard game. Two of his touchdown passes went to Malcom Floyd, including a 70-yarder.

RAMS 27, 49ERS 6: At St. Louis, Todd Gurley rushed for 133 yards on 20 carries, topping 100 yards for the fourth straight start to open his career, and the Rams had three sacks and a safety.

The Rams (4-3) are 3-0 against the NFC West for the first time since 2004, and they’re above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2006. The St. Louis defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown the last two games, permitting just four field goals.

The 49ers (2-6) have lost six of seven and are 0-3 in the division.

RAIDERS 34, JETS 20: At Oakland, Derek Carr threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns to help Oakland pick apart the Jets’ vaunted defense.

Latavius Murray ran for 113 yards, Andre Holmes caught two touchdown passes and Charles Woodson intercepted his league-leading fifth pass of the season to give the Raiders (4-3) their first winning record this late in the season since 2011.

In only the fourth meeting of teams 6-0 or better, Peyton Manning tied Brett Favre’s NFL record with his 186th regular-season win and Denver’s defense rattled Aaron Rodgers into one of the worst games of his career.

The Broncos piled it on in the fourth quarter, when DeMarcus Ware sacked Rodgers and the ball ended up in the end zone for a safety.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Jeff Gordon earned an automatic berth in NASCAR’s championship race – where he’ll try to win a fifth title in his final season – with a victory Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

He has Matt Kenseth to thank for his spot in the final four of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Kenseth intentionally wrecked Joey Logano – payback from an incident three races ago – to take the race leader out with 47 laps remaining. Logano had the dominant car, and Kenseth, who was in an earlier wreck with Brad Keselowski, came back on the track 10 laps down and drove Logano into the wall.

Logano had led 207 of the 500 laps and was furious.

His father, Tom, had to be pushed into the team hauler by the crew chief as the crowd cheered wildly in support of Kenseth.

Kenseth downplayed the incident, deadpanning it was a result of his earlier incident with Keselowski, who had led 143 laps as the two Team Penske teammates were the class of the field. Instead of celebrating a win and a spot in the Nov. 22 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Logano is last in the eight-driver field and Keselowski is sixth.

Bulls withstand late surge to beat Magic 92-87

CHICAGO — Derrick Rose doesn’t see much point in shooting often right now. In fact, Rose doesn’t see a lot of anything.

With his vision still blurred from a broken orbital bone suffered before the season, Rose is finding other ways to contribute to the Chicago Bulls, like his game-high eight assists Sunday that helped the Bulls hold off a late surge by the Orlando Magic in a 92-87 victory.

“There is no point in shooting the ball if I can’t see,” Rose said.

Instead, Pau Gasol and Niko Mirotic did the shooting, each scoring 16 points with Jimmy Butler adding 14 to lead the Bulls.

Butler’s late-game defensive heroics were just as important after the Bulls squandered a double-digit lead during a 14-0 Magic run – they were only ahead by one with just over 3 minutes to play. Butler jumped to intercept a pass on a breakaway and squelch the comeback bid. Then, under the Bulls’ basket after a Magic rebound, Butler came up with another takeaway to again foil Orlando.

“On the defensive end I

have to be the one to ... get a couple stops, get us going,” Butler said. “On the offensive end it could be anybody, making shots, getting into the paint. But on the defensive end I’m going to be the one.”

It was the third win in four games for Chicago. The Magic dropped to 0-3.

The Magic shot just 38.9 percent on 35-of-90 shooting. They also struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 10 of 17 for 58.8 percent.

“We were just lethargic on both ends,” Magic coach Scott Skiles said. “I know everybody will point to our offense tonight and then look at the Bulls’ defensive numbers. We had a nice stretch in the fourth quarter where we had five stops in a row. We started kind of getting something going, but we were down 15. Most of the game we just weren’t here tonight.”

Rose averaged 17.7 points per game last season for the Bulls but scored just six on Sunday after scoring eight on Friday against Detroit. He said he’s happy to be an assist man since Chicago has so many offensive weapons.

“As long as we’re winning games I (couldn’t) care less about anything else, about my eye or anything,” Rose said.

Rose is still playing with a

face mask, but he still hit two clutch free throws with 10 seconds to go that gave Chicago a 92-87 lead.

Evan Fournier led the Magic with 19 points.

Nikola Vucevic added 15 and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Tobias Harris had 11 points.

Doug McDermott came off the bench to score 12 for the Bulls.

TIP-INS: Rose didn’t score in the second or third quarter. ...

The Bulls didn’t trail after taking a 17-15 lead with 5:15 to play in the first quarter. ... Orlando has connected on a 3-pointer in 659 consecutive games, dating to March 17, 2007. ... The Bulls’ Kirk Hinrich sat out Sunday’s game with a sore toe, but coach Fred Hoiberg said it wasn’t a serious injury.

FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS:

Skiles coached parts of five seasons with the Bulls and has fond memories of his time in Chicago.

“Chicago’s a great city, great sports town. We had a good run for a few years,” Skiles said. “We just couldn’t quite get over the hump in the playoffs, but it was fun.”

Skiles, however, wasn’t attaching any added significance to coaching in the United Center.

At the bridge table, the more alternative lines of play you have, often the more difficult your decision. However, some always go with the first option that they see, which happened when this deal was originally played.

South was in four spades. West led the diamond ace and continued with the diamond king. After ruffing, what should declarer have done?

South’s heart loser was going to disappear on dummy’s fourth club, but trumps had to be drawn first.

The original declarer immediately led the spade king from his hand, but West defended perfectly by ducking.

He saw that if he won and led another diamond, declarer would ruff in the dummy.

Instead, when South continued with a low trump at trick four, West stepped in with his jack and played a diamond. Declarer ruffed, but now both West and South had two spades left.

Declarer led another trump, hoping West was out of diamonds, but no luck. South had to go down one, losing one diamond and three spades.

Declarer should have been happy to concede two trump tricks. At trick three, he should have led a low spade toward dummy’s nine. If West won that trick and led a diamond, South would have ruffed in the dummy, crossed to his hand with a club, and played the spade king. He would have ruffed the next diamond, drawn trumps, and claimed. Or, if West ducked at trick four, declarer could have played a trump to his king, ruffed the next diamond, cashed the spade queen, and turned to clubs.

are chosen at random to eat plant-based diets and others are not. Because they are expensive to conduct, such randomized trials tend to involve smaller numbers of people followed for shorter times.

There have been quite a number of such randomized trials. They have generally shown that risk factors for heart disease, stroke and diabetes (like blood pressure, blood cholesterol and sugar) are better with plant-based diets. A few studies have been large enough and long enough to actually show lower rates of these diseases and of premature death. So while I don’t consider it proven beyond a doubt, I do think it is likely that healthy plantbased diets (particularly the Mediterranean diet) really are better for our health.

If you want to transition to a more plant-based diet, start slowly. Deliberately make a vegetarian meal one day a week.

(Meatless Mondays are popular these days.) Then move to a few meatless meals per week. You’ll also have to change the way you think about your plate. Dinner won’t center around a large chunk of meat.

Vegetarian meals mix proteins, fats and vegetables together. Stews, soups and one-pot meals with beans, whole grains and vegetables are popular options. Good sources of plant-based proteins and fats include avocados, peanut butter and nuts.

But I need to be certain – is a vegetarian diet really better for your health?

Dear Reader: The answer is: it depends.

Just avoiding meats and eating only vegetables can be accomplished in both healthy and unhealthy ways. After all, a vegetarian who subsists on meat-free pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches isn’t doing himself any favors.

And, believe it or not, I’ve had more than one “vegetarian” patient whose diet was like that.

However, for a while now, it’s been clear that healthy, plant-based diets may improve long-term health. Such healthy vegetarian diets include proteins from vegetables (peas, spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and many others) and carbs from whole grains.

Several recent studies have provided evidence of health benefits of plant-based diets. In one study, researchers found that vegetarians have the lowest average body mass index (BMI). Meat eaters have the highest BMIs. Excess weight is associated with a higher risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses.

Another study found that eating a vegetarian diet reduced the overall risk of all cancers compared with eating a non-vegetarian diet. And a third study showed that vegetarian diets were associated with a lower risk of death from all causes.

These studies were what are called observational studies. Large numbers of people were followed for a long time.

Those people who chose to emphasize plant-based foods in their diets had better health. But the studies could not prove that the plant-based diets were the cause of the better health.

That kind of proof requires randomized trials, in which some people
