THE HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – Teachers reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement Wednesday morning with Plainfield School District 202, according to a district official.

The Board of Education is expected to vote Oct. 27 on the proposed contract. Teachers are expected to vote Oct. 17.

Details of the agreement won’t be released by the district until after the agreement has been signed by both par-

ties, district spokesman Tom Hernandez said.

The last contract was for three years and expired June 30. Teachers and administrators have been in negotiations since last November.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Javier Reyes of Shorewood knows he will arrive early and stay late to clean up when Food Network star Chef Robert Irvine appears at the Rialto Square Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday.

However, Reyes’ exact onstage duties, as well as those of four other JJC culinary arts students, are still a mystery.

That’s typical Irvine, said Chef Michael McGreal, JJC culinary arts program department chair. Irvine never repeats the same show. This way, he added, patrons can’t say, “Oh, I’ve seen this before.”

McGreal does know this isn’t a cooking-demo show.

Rather, Irvine will entertain in a comedic and energetic fashion, using cooking as the vehicle. Students will serve Irvine on stage, much as nurses serve surgeons, McGreal said.

“In some ways, he’s larger than life to the students,” McGreal said. “It’s like meeting a movie star and then going to work with him for the day. ...

Irvine may show new techniques to fillet a fish, whip up a restaurant-quality meal in 30 minutes or bring audience members on stage to participate, McGreal said.

When Irvine appeared at the Rialto in 2013, Reyes said, one of his friends prepared extra

helpings of Irvine’s culinary creations and then served them to the audience.

So when McGreal invited Reyes to participate, he couldn’t refuse. This opportunity is very different from the average internship, said Reyes, 33, a former computer programmer.

“It’s more of a show experience,” Reyes said.

Katlyn Kelty, 22, of Coal City said she’s honored for the chance to work with a wellknown chef, a rarity for many students.

“It’s something I can’t wait to do,” Kelty said.

Other participating students are Chloe Frascona of Bolingbrook, Karen Lam of Country Club Hills and Rachel Pauley of Plainfield.

Teen expected to survive shooting

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A teenager is expected to survive after being shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon in a Joliet parking lot.

Police are looking for the shooter.

The attack occurred at 3:47 p.m. in a parking lot between

the Plasma Blood Center and Burger King in the 100 block of Collins Street.

Joliet Police Lt. Stephen Breen said police arrived to find a 17-year-old boy had suffered a gunshot wound to his upper chest. He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, but his injury is not considered life-threatening,

according to police reports.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man around 17 years old with a medium build.

He was wearing a red or maroon shirt with white letters and black and white camouflage pants.

He ran northeast from the parking lot after firing two shots, Breen said.

Judge’s decision was expected

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There was no visible reaction Wednesday from Joshua Miner or the families of the two men he murdered when Judge Gerald Kinney pronounced him guilty.

Kinney’s decision was expected by those who watched the six-day bench trial, where a Joshua Miner video recording showed Miner, 26, admitting to detectives he’d robbed and strangled Terrence Rankins and Eric Glover Terrence Jr., both 22, on Rankins Jan. 9, 2013.

Defense attorney Michael Renzi said Miner was “not at all surprised” by the verdict.

“He saw the Eric Glover writing on the Jr. wall [throughout the case],” Renzi said.

Rankins and Glover were lured to Alisa Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street expecting to party with Massaro and Bethany McKee. But Miner and Adam Landerman also were waiting after the four allegedly made plans to attack the victims for

cigarette money.

At a signal from Miner, the women left the room with McKee’s baby while he strangled Rankins and Landerman strangled Glover, according to testimony at the trial in September. The robbers got about $100 from the victims.

“All of [the verdicts] are important, but he’s the one who actually murdered my son,” Duval Rankins said Wednesday following the verdict.

All four suspects were arrested on murder charges.

Massaro pleaded guilty to robbery and concealing a homicide in exchange for testifying against the others. McKee was found guilty during a bench trial before Kinney in August.

Landerman awaits a trial that is expected to occur after Kinney’s scheduled retirement.

Massaro was not called as a witness against Miner, but testified during McKee’s trial that she’d returned to her upstairs apartment after hearing a struggle and found the door locked.

“I heard someone saying, ‘Die ... die.’ [That] was Joshua Miner,” Massaro said.

Kinney said while the evidence showed Landerman killed Glover, Miner is guilty of his murder because he is accountable for planning the robbery that led to his death.

Glover’s mother, Nicole Jones said she had some satisfaction Miner is being held responsible for her son’s death, but she “will never be fully healed.”

Kinney decided before the trial that Miner was aware he was waiving his Miranda rights and agreed to continue answering questions when the detective replied it would take some time to do so.

Kinney noted “the evidence as to whether or not [both] murders were committed during the course of the robbery comes predominantly from the statement of the defendant.”

Planning board fails to kill Illiana Fate of expressway could be set Thursday

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Efforts by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning board to flip a kill switch on the controversial Illiana Expressway failed Wednesday, leaving the project in the hands of a second committee.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee, which supported the project last year, is scheduled to vote Thursday.

The 15-member board – which met Wednesday to consider updates to the region’s GO TO 2040 capital plan –

needed a 12-vote supermajority to remove the $1.5 billion tollway project from the plan, said Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar, also a CMAP board member. But it fell two votes short.

Claar was one of just four who voted in favor of keeping the Illiana project in CMAP’s plan.

Supporters say the proposed 47-mile tollway linking Interstate 55 near Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana would provide a much-needed east-west highway and relieve traffic along I-80. But opponents argue the tollway is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

In a separate vote Wednesday, project opponents voted down a version of CMAP’s regional plan that included the Illiana to block it from moving forward.

The focus now turns to the Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee, a separate panel to CMAP, which meets Thursday to vote on the issue. The MPO board narrowly approved the Illiana project last year.

But there’s conflicting ideas on which board – MPO or CMAP – trumps the other, as noted in a lawsuit filed earlier this year on behalf of the Sierra Club and Open-

lands. The lawsuit claims the project’s inclusion in the GO TO 2040 plan was illegally approved by the MPO last year because CMAP’s board of directors rejected the project a week earlier.

Will County Board member Judy O’Galla, R-Monee, was among those who spoke out Wednesday against the project. O’Galla said taxpayers will be on the hook if toll revenues fall short.

In an interview with The Herald-News, she pointed to the failings of the Indiana Toll Road. The road’s private operators filed for bankruptcy last month. Like the Indiana tollway, the Illiana is supposed to be a public/private partnership, she said, but “everybody

in the state will wind paying for it.”

Guy Tridgell, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said the state agency “looks forward” to MPO reaffirming its decision, making the Illiana project eligible for federal funding.

“The Illiana Expressway enjoys an unprecedented level of bipartisan support, including the backing of governors and legislatures from two states. The federal government also has identified a clear transportation need for it,” Tridgell said in an email.

“Moving forward with the Illiana Expressway is the right thing to do for the south suburbs, the entire region and the state.”

Goodwill opening new locations in Frankfort, Morris

fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Goodwill stores are expanding in Will and Grundy counties and company leaders say it’s the result of donor efforts.

A Goodwill store will open in Frankfort on Friday on LaGrange Road in a spot that once housed a Dominick’s grocery store. In Morris, a Goodwill store will open in the next several weeks in an area north of the Wal-Mart store, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

The opening of the new stores represents recent growth for Goodwill, which provides employment and supportive services for people with disabilities, according to its website. Last year, Goodwill provided services to more than 53,000 people with disabilities.

More than 5,700 employees work for the company in more than 90 locations throughout the Chicago area and southeastern Wisconsin.

The Frankfort location will have nearly 13,000 square feet for the sales floor and more than 20,300 square feet for the entire store, she said. As is typical with other Goodwill stores, the Frankfort spot will have 40 to 50 staff members, Lightholder said.

The Morris location will open in several weeks and will be another positive source of retail for the city, said Kopczick. The location will be run under the Northern Illinois branch of Goodwill stores.

In March, city officials approved plans for the new store, which will be 16,000 square feet.

Work slated for Division Street Friday

CREST HILL – The state plans to begin a patching and resurfacing project on Division Street on Friday.

The work is expected to be completed on Nov. 25, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The roadwork will be between Broadway Street and the entrance to Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and should pay attention to flaggers and signs in the work zone,

The contract approved Monday with Elgin-based Central Salt LLC is for 2,200 tons of salt at $78.60 a ton. That is lower than recent contracts in several villages, including Plainfield, Shorewood and Channahon.

“I’m very happy with where

we’re at,” Public Works Director Brent Cann said. “We got a good price compared to others.”

The contract gives the city wiggle room to purchase 80 to 120 percent of the 2,200 tons over the next year.

Last year’s snowy winter caused many municipalities to dip deep into their salt reserves. Some, such as New Lenox, had to borrow salt.

Crest Hill used almost all of the 1,200 tons it purchased as well as its 600-ton reserve, Cann said.

CHANNAHON – Village officials are considering changes to single-day liquor licenses in an effort to help local catering businesses.

During Monday night’s village board meeting, Village President Joe Cook brought up an informal proposal concerning licenses. Most catering done in Channahon is by out-oftown caterers who pay $50 for one-day liquor licenses, he said.

Local businesses have to pay a hefty fee for annual liquor licenses.

“I think we should limit the amount of one-day liquor licenses available,” Cook said.

That would give Channahon businesses some benefit for their investment in the village, he said.

Village Administrator Thomas Durkin suggested raising prices for a one-day license.

Cook said he would discuss the possibilities with the village attorney.

To interest residential and commercial developers in Channahon, Petrick said the village loaded several flash drives with highlights of attractive properties for developers to peruse. Included is information on zoning, utilities, aerial views, TIF boundaries and property photos.

Also included are descriptions of the village’s gateway signs, demographics, Town Center designs and transportation improvements.

“This will probably be one of our big selling points,” Petrick said of the transportation changes coming to the east side of town. “I-55 will have a brand new interchange.”

OBITUARIES GLENN R. BAILEY Glenn R. Bailey, peacefully departed this earthly life surrounded by his family on Monday, October 6, 2014, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born in Maryville, TN the first son of the late Albert Bailey and Frances (nee Cooper) Bailey. Glen was united in marriage on November 28, 1959, to Shirley Dalton. To this blessed union two children were born, the late Teresa “Terri” Heck and John Bailey.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Bailey of Channahon; his son, John Bailey and wife Susan; and son in law, Bruce Heck. Proud and loving grandfather of Joseph Bailey, dear brother of JW (Linda) Bailey, Jerry (Betsy) Bailey, Jr. (Linda) Bailey and Jane (Jim) Rose; fond uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

A resident of the Minooka and Channahon community since 1964.

Glen was a long time member of Families of Faith Church in Channahon formerly First Baptist Church, his faith and family were his treasures.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father. He cherished being a grandfather and spending time with his grandson Joseph.

An avid gardener and collector of antique cars and a retiree of Joliet Caterpillar Plant. Loving and kind in all his ways, upright and just to the end of his days; sincere and true in his heart and mind, a beautiful memory he left behind.

He gave selflessly of his time, talents, and treasures to his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. He treasured the simple times spent with his family and he will be missed.

Tara was a devoted wife and loving mother, who enjoyed raising her family and cooking. She shared her Christian faith with her children, as well as others by frequently opening her home to those in need. She was proud to work with her late husband in his home printing business and enjoyed fishing, Bingo and playing cards with their many friends throughout the years.

Surviving are her children, Charles (Mary Samios) Russell, Linda (Dave) Emerine, John Russell, Sandra (Tom) Ponce and Cynthia Erickson; and seven grandchildren, Johnny Russell, Morgan Ryan, Jimmy Ryan, Forest Erickson, Brandon Emerine, Emily Ryan and Colin Erickson.

Preceded by her beloved husband, Charles A. Russell, Sr.; her parents; three sisters, Sharon Howard, Cynthia Relehan and Linda Haake; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Don graduated from Joliet Catholic High School in the Class of 1950.

He was a member of Senior Club, Moose Lodge #300, Elks Lodge #296, and Monday euchre night.

He volunteered many hours at Day Break Shelter. He was especially an avid fan of anything his grand and great-grandchildren were involved in. Don was past coach of St. Joe’s baseball and St. Pat’s basketball. He was a loyal member

of St. Patrick Catholic Church and 55 Club. He was known to many as Papa Don. Special thank you to Dr. Ramesh Patel and his staff for 27 years of loving care.

Illinois Supreme Court building rededicated

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme Court building has been rededicated following a $16 million renovation.

Illinois lawmakers, attorneys, Supreme Court justices and judges from local, state and federal levels gathered at the state’s judicial branch headquarters for a ceremony Tuesday evening. Chief Justice Rita Garman said she and her colleagues are happy to be back after spending a year in Chicago during the renovation.

Former Gov. James Thompson, chairman of the court’s preservation commission, said he was thrilled to be back where his legal career began 55 years ago. He said the building is a refreshed symbol of the Illinois justice system.

The State Journal-Register reported a commemorative plaque was placed next to the original, which dedicated the building in 1908, two years after it was built.

Judge delays Chicago terrorism trial by 9 months

CHICAGO – A federal judge has pushed back by nearly nine months the trial of a 20-yearold suburban man accused of trying to ignite a bomb outside a Chicago bar.

Attorneys for Adel Daoud asked for the delay and Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman granted it at a Wednesday hearing in Chicago. The trial had been scheduled for next month. It’ll now begin July 27.

Coleman said she reluctantly changed the date but added she understood complexities of the case required more preparation time.

One issue the sides have litigated is the extent to which agents used expanded phone and Internet surveillance to investigate Daoud.

Among the reasons the defense gave for requesting a delay was the need to further research a Polish national who communicated with Daoud before his 2012 arrest.

Several Supreme Court justices expressed doubts Wednesday during arguments over whether federal law entitles workers to compensation for security measures to stop worker theft.

The case is being watched closely by business groups that fear employers could be liable for billions of dollars in retroactive pay for security check procedures that have become routine in retail and other industries.

By MIKE STOBBE and CONNIE CASS The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S. died Wednesday despite intense but delayed treatment, and the government announced it was expanding airport examinations to guard against the spread of the deadly disease.

The checks will include taking the temperatures of hundreds of travelers arriving from West Africa at five major American airports.

The new screenings will begin Saturday at New York’s JFK International Airport and then expand to Washington Dulles and the international airports in Atlanta, Chicago and Newark. An estimated 150 people a day will be checked, using high-tech thermometers that don’t touch the skin.

The White House said the fever checks would reach more than nine of 10 travelers to the U.S. from the three heaviest-hit countries – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

President Barack Obama called the measures “really just belt and suspenders” to support protections already in place. Border Patrol agents now look for people who ob-

U.S., allies chafe at Turkish inaction vs. Syria militants

By DESMOND BUTLER The Associated Press ISTANBUL – As U.S. generals and Secretary of State John Kerry warn that a strategic Syrian border town could fall to Islamic State militants, the Turkish military has deployed its tanks on its side of the frontier but only watched the slaughter.

Turkey’s inaction – despite its supposed participation in a coalition forged to crush the extremist group – is frustrating Washington and its NATO allies, and reviving a rebellion by Turkish Kurds.

Amid fears the Kurdish town of Kobani could fall any day, U.S. and NATO officials were traveling to Turkey on Thursday to press negotiations for more robust Turkish involvement in the coalition.

But Turkey is taking a hard line, insisting it only will consider involvement in military action as part of a broader strategy for ending the rule of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The U.S. and its allies want to keep the focus on the Islamic State group, which they say poses a more global threat.

Emphasizing the U.S. position, Kerry said Wednesday that although the Obama ad-

ministration is “deeply concerned about the people of Kobani,” preventing the town’s fall to Islamic State militants was not a strategic objective for the U.S. “As horrific as it is to watch in real time what’s happening in Kobani, it’s also important to remember, you have to step back and understand the strategic objective,” Kerry told a news conference in Washington.

Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, also conceded Kobani could fall because “air power alone is not going to be enough to save that city.”

“We all need to prepare ourselves for the reality that other towns and villages – and perhaps Kobani – will be taken by ISIL,” Kirby said, adding the key to eventually defeating the militants is to train and enable indigenous ground forces.

Turkey is ambivalent about the fight across its border, because of its distrust of the Kurdish fighters protecting Kobani, also known as Ayn Arab. It views them as an extension of the Kurdish PKK, the rebel group that has waged a long and bloody insurgency against Ankara.

In recent days, Turkish offi-

cials have emphasized they view both the Islamic State group and the PKK as terrorist groups.

Left unsaid is which group they view as the greater threat.

But Turkey’s strict neutrality as the lightly-armed Kurds face annihilation speaks volumes.

While Turkey maintains it does not want Kobani to fall, Turkish officials said they will not enter combat until they are assured the U.S.-led coalition has a long-term strategy in Syria. They see Assad as a greater nemesis on their border than even the Islamic State. Taking out the militants without a plan to fill the inevitable vacuum, they said, will lead to further chaos that will only strengthen Assad. They want the U.S. to set up a no-fly zone and a humanitarian corridor, as well as ramp up assistance to Syrian rebels battling to overthrow Assad.

With its ambitious demands, Turkey may be betting its geography makes it an indispensable partner and it can leverage that position to force the U.S. and its allies to expand the coalition mission – an assumption causing frustration in Washington and strains within NATO, a senior U.S. administration official said.

The CAAPP is Illinois’ operating permit program for major sources of emissions, as required by Title V of the Clean Air Act (Act). The conditions of CAAPP permits are enforceable by the public, as well as by the USEPA and Illinois EPA. In addition to implementing Title V of the Act, CAAPP permits may contain “Title I Conditions,” i.e., conditions established under the permit programs for new and modified emission units, pursuant to Title I of the Act. The permit contains T1 conditions in section 4.1.2 that were established in previously issued permits. The permit contains no T1 conditions that are being newly established or revised by this application.

In addition to implementing Title V of the Act, CAAPP permits may contain “Title I Conditions,” i.e., conditions established under the permit programs for new and modified emission units, pursuant to Title I of the Act. The permit contains T1 conditions in section 4.1.2 that were established in previously issued permits. The permit contains no T1 conditions that are being newly established or revised by this application.

As I take my walk around Normantown Road and Romeoville Gardens, residents continually ask me: When will we have a grocery store? I truly felt a dire need to write this letter.

As of this writing, and with a discussion with Fat Rickey today, his restaurant and grocery store should be open before the end of 2015, possibly sooner. Much depends on prices, materials being on time, etc.

It is what I call a leap of faith. He also forecasts the betterment for our community, because of his and other business’s perseverance. He is friendly and diversified. He lives in Romeoville. His children go to school in Romeoville. He cares.

Our village has many residents who believe and inspire local business, which is good. They will step up to the plate when necessary. It has always been our teamwork that is outstanding.

Our village also has excellent and caring leaders. I and many other residents applaud their fortitude

and the strong direction we are now going.

One of our village mottoes is Character Counts. This we all advocate. I and others need local involvement to encourage, uplift and promote Fat Rickey and other small businesses. Don’t build it. We already have enough underused airports: Gary, Joliet, Lewis, Aurora, DuPage, Rockford, some ready for heavy traffic.

Gary, Joliet, Aurora and Rockford are nicely situated by expressways; and Rockford, DuPage, Aurora, Lewis and Gary also have adjacent rail lines that could be expanded or used for commuters. Since these airports are under-used, why would the South Suburban airport be any different, especially with the O’Hare expansion?

“I’m really happy since our team came out strong,” Loeffler said. “I was real happy with the scores that we had.

The main goal for Kayla and I were to get the team out for sectionals and go from there.

We hope to be strong on Monday and get some individuals to state.”

Biedrzycki, who tied for fourth in the 2012 AA finals but didn’t compete in last fall’s playoffs, feels she’s moving in the right direction for another high showing at state.

“I definitely have some things that need to be tightened up before state,” Biedrzycki said. “I need to work on my putter and short game; but overall, I feel pretty good.

Hopefully, I can continue the momentum into sectionals and state. It hurts that the team didn’t get through, but it’s good that some of them will be with me at sectionals, and we’ll have a lot of fun.”

Providence, which placed second and qualified for the sectional for the third year in a row, was led by Alyssa Gromala, who shot an 81 to tie for third place. Other Celtics scorers were Nicki Griffith (92), Anna Goggins (94) and

Maddox was the medalist with a 79 in the Bishop McNamara Regional at Oak Springs in St. Anne. She advances to the Watseka Sectional.

JOLIET – There was the usual amount of drama one would expect at a girls golf regional concerning which teams and individuals would advance.

But there wasn’t much suspense involving which squad would claim top honors or who would be the medalist at Wednesday’s Class AA Joliet Central Regional at Inwood.

Lockport won its first regional since 1987 by posting a 341, which was 21 strokes better than runner-up Providence Catholic. Lemont edged Lincoln-Way West, 365-367, for the last of the three qualifying spots for Monday’s Lincoln-Way Central Sectional at The Sanctuary.

“Coming into this, the girls were very confident and knew their ability,” Lockport coach Gene Trent said. “I really believe that the girls had a good game plan coming into today. Our leaders talked to the girls about playing within themselves and not trying to do too much. The bottom of our lineup absolutely came through, and that took some of the pressure off of our top girls.”

Lincoln-Way West’s Alexis Biedrzycki captured her second regional title in three years when she shot a twoover-par 72 to finish eight strokes in front of Lockport’s Melanie Loeffler, who claimed second-place honors.

“Our goal was to move on as a team for sectionals, so we’re all excited about that,” Gromala said. “It’s hard since everyone has to play good on the same day. I thought that we did and we all contributed. We had some other players who did very good.”

Lemont earned its second straight and fifth sectional appearance in six years thanks to the efforts of Laura Ringo (88), Stephanie Eby (89), Jennifer Lorenz (91) and Taylor Toth (97). Katie Atherton (98) just missed being her team’s fourth scorer.

“I thought that we played pretty well, and it’s good to be in the top three,” Lemont coach Bill Mondrella said.

“We had some girls who battled through today and put up the scores that we needed to advance. This year we have a lot of depth, and that’s helped us.”

Beside Biedrzycki, West also advanced Sydney Valiska (98), Jaclyn Dolan (98) and Hannah Slater (99), who won a two-way playoff for the last of the 10 qualifying spots.

Lincoln-Way Central (375) had three qualifiers – Mary Yonkaitis (83), Sarah Scheer (95) and Bridget Wood (98), while Madeline Karlson (99) fell short in the playoff with Slater.

Earning sectional trips for Bolingbrook (411) were Morgan Schultz (95) and Emily Pervinich (97), while Joliet Central (420) advanced Milena Singletary (85).

Time for West to zero in on playoffs VIEWS Dick Goss One of the interesting preseason stories in area high school football was the two Joliet Township schools each hosting a Friday night home game.

Joliet Central had its opportunity on opening night, when the Steelmen entertained Thornridge.

Now it’s Joliet West’s turn.

The Tigers, led by exciting junior quarterback Alex Tibble, host Stagg in a SouthWest Suburban Blue matchup Friday night.

From West’s standpoint, however, there is more to it than playing a home game at night. The Tigers (1-3, 3-3) are in the hunt for the first playoff berth, and a victory over Stagg (1-3, 3-3) would go a long way toward securing that bid.

West, which completed the gauntlet against the four conference heavyweights in Weeks 3 through 6, has sufficient playoff points (opponent victories) that it should qualify with five wins. Joliet Central and Lockport also remain on the schedule, and between them they have one victory.

So you might say that even with a loss Friday, the

6. Lincoln-Way Central (4-2): It counts as a loss on the record, but the Knights’ performance in last week’s 30-27 loss to unbeaten Lincoln-Way North again shows they are a quality team that likely is playoff bound.

7. Lemont (6-0): The strength of schedule may be questioned, but all the Indians do is win in impressive fashion.

8. Plainfield East (5-1): After losing to Plainfield North in overtime, Bengals get back on track with 25-6 victory over Minooka. The big game in the Southwest Prairie is Friday night when East entertains Oswego.

Tigers still should get to five victories. However, their final two opponents are neighborhood rivals – when the cliche about throwing out the records comes into play – and the Porters have especially shown they can compete with strong opponents.

In addition, there is nothing wrong with hitting the playoffs at 6-3, riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak and getting a better playoff seed than a 5-4 mark would merit.

What it all means is that West’s only home game of the season is significant for more than one reason.

Knowing what we do about playoff points and history, let’s review where our area teams stand from a playoff perspective as we hit Week 7.

Already qualified: Wilmington (6-0), Lemont (6-0), Providence (5-1), JCA (5-1), Lincoln-Way West (5-1) and Lincoln-Way East (5-1). A goal for these six is to continue to win and improve their playoff seeds.

NFL players would just be Bears missing 4 better off without Twitter LBs at practice BEARS INJURY REPORT

I like to think I know a lot about the NFL, but obviously nobody knows everything.

Wednesday night on the “Boers and Bernstein Show” on AM-670 the Score, a caller asked me why NFL players need someone to squirt water in their mouths during games.

If you’ve ever watched a game, you know it’s true. But it’s not something I’ve ever thought about, and I don’t have a clue.

The best you can do is make sure you’re right more often than you’re wrong and have answers more often than you don’t.

I like to think I know a fair amount about young adults, too.

I’ve got three kids and a barrel full of nieces and nephews I’ve raised and counseled through the years, and they’ve all turned into pretty solid citizens.

No, I don’t always get their music, wardrobes, tattoos or dietary choices, but we do all share a common understanding of right and wrong.

Particularly puzzling to me is young people’s fascination with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., and I’m flat-out dumbfounded when a seemingly bright, extremely successful 27-year-old thinks it’s OK to use his Twitter account to tell the people most responsible for his good fortune to “eat dirt.”

It’s just wrong on so many levels, and you have to wonder what Lamarr Houston was thinking.

Let’s be absolutely clear – this is not just about Lamarr Houston. Less than 24 hours

Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth went a step further, saying, “That stuff’s just garbage; I’m not worried about the fans or the media or any of that [stuff].”

Are these guys really that dumb, or just that spoiled?

The only reason Houston, Ioka, Whitworth and most of the players in the NFL are making so much money for playing a game that they’ll probably never have to work a day in their lives is they’ve been lucky. They won the gene pool.

It makes me crazy when I hear about how hard these guys work. I’m sorry, but exercising – call it working out if you prefer – four, five or six hours a day around four, five or six times a week, then practicing a game a couple of hours a day a few days a week and then watching video tape of your games just isn’t that hard.

How many of you out there would like to join me in showing these kids what hard work

really is?

These young people have an incredible God-given gift: their size, strength, speed and athleticism. It’s not something you can buy or go out and find – it’s given to them. Playing with that gift is a blessing, not the back-breaking work players make it out to be.

Showing your gratitude for that gift by dumping on the real hard-working people who spend their earnings to make your gift so incredibly valuable, worth tens of millions of dollars, is just the height of stupidity and arrogance.

Fans owe players absolutely nothing. That is not a hard reality to grasp or understand.

I do have a simple answer for a large chunk of this player ignorance. Just make a rule that NFL players can’t use their Twitter accounts in season.

Show me one positive that has ever come from a player tweeting or responding to tweets during the season?

Houston apparently has acknowledged his mistake since letting his thumbs take off without engaging his brain.

But is he just sorry for the social media firestorm he set off? Will he avoid the temptation to vent on Twitter next time?

Does he actually get that Bears fans owe him nothing while he owes them everything?

Lance Briggs (ribs), D.J. Williams (neck), Jon Bostic (back) and Shea McClellin (hand) did not participate in Wednesday’s session. Briggs was not present, and he appeared to be favoring an injury following Sunday’s loss to Carolina.

Coach Marc Trestman said that the Bears went with Khaseem Greene, Darryl Sharpton and Christian Jones at linebacker during practice.

Williams missed last Wednesday’s practice with a neck injury as well before returning on Thursday. Bostic missed most of the second half of the Panthers game. Jermon Bushrod, Taylor Boggs and Ahmad Dixon also did not practice. Matt Forte was absent, which was a coach’s decision. Trestman said they just wanted to get Forte some rest.

The potentially good news for the Bears was that Chris Conte and Jeremiah Ratliff were both limited participants. Conte left Sunday’s game with a concussion, and Ratliff has not played since suffering a concussion in Week Two. He practiced last Wednesday, but missed the rest of the week.

Sherrick McManis (quad) was limited as well, and could be the Bears’ No. 3 corner this week depending on his health.

Roberto Garza was a full participant in practice, so he will likely return to the starting center spot on Sunday in Atlanta for the first time since injuring his ankle in Week One. “We’ll obviously keep our fingers crossed,” Trestman said. “Certainly, we’re terribly happy to have Brian de la Puente with us. He did a very good job for us during the times he has played, and he’ll continue to work in there, but Garza practiced today and we’ll see what kind of aftereffects he has from a full day of work.”

In Atlanta, Harry Douglas (foot) and Devin Hester (hamstring) did not practice. Douglas has missed the last two weeks, but Hester is expected to play on Sunday.

Ferguson said members will rejoice when they have their own building. Since its beginning, The Village Christian Church has set up a complete church in the school every Sunday morning, then taken it all down again at noon.

The logistics are extensive.

Crews arrive each Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and roll in everything they need from a trailer – sound equipment, lighting, items for the children’s ministry and things needed for the coffee area. They even assemble a stage.

“Our teams work very hard,” Ferguson said. “They literally roll everything in.

They’re like roadies. They attach the cables, lights, electronics, video projectors, screens.”

Creating a church in such a way requires two components – technical skill and brute force, Ferguson said.

“It’s especially hard when it’s cold and dark outside and the trailer door is frozen shut,” Ferguson said. “The last winter we had just about killed us.”

25 St. Mary sets Make a Difference Day plans THE HERALD-NEWS PLAINFIELD – Dozens of meaningful, family-oriented service projects will be offered on Make a Difference Day, Oct. 18, at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, 15629 S. Route 59 in Plainfield, and out in the community.

New projects this year include a blood drive at SMI, helping at Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva, and working at Ready-Set-Ride in Plainfield.

Hand strength is a fluid, not static, value. Look at the North hand and the start to the auction.

What should North rebid over two diamonds, if anything?

A hand starts with a certain number of high-card points, but its value may decrease, remain constant or increase as the auction progresses. The relevant factor in this deal is North’s short suit once the diamond fit becomes known.

At the table, North passed over two diamonds. That was much too cautious. North at the very least owed his partner a raise to three diamonds. Then South, with a known nine-card fit, would probably have continued with four clubs as a game-try, highlighting his heart shortage. North would have raised to five clubs, and South would have retreated to five diamonds.

Maybe West would have started the defense with two rounds of trumps. South would win, cash his two club winners and the spade ace (discarding a heart from the dummy), ruff a spade, cash the club king, and claim when the suit splits 3-3.

Instead, suppose West leads a low heart, East wins with his eight and returns a low heart.

South ruffs, unblocks his two club honors, and leads a trump. With the favorable breaks, the contract cannot be touched.

Yes, South could easily face worse distribution, but even so, it is worth going for the game bonus.

The most widely studied treatment for boosting female sexual desire is testosterone. Most studies have found a benefit.

Even though testosterone is described as a “male” hormone, women also make testosterone – but in much lower amounts than men.

It does stimulate desire in women as well as men, along with arousal and orgasm.

Another option, if your problem is not just physical, is sex therapy.

A therapist can help you identify thoughts, feelings and behaviors that might be interfering with your sexual enjoyment. A therapist will also help you communicate your needs and enhance feelings of intimacy between you and your partner.

A loss of sexual desire and function after menopause is reasonably common. Fortunately, there are therapies that can help.

DEAR READER: Sex is complicated. You probably already know that. Sexual desire surely resides in the head, but other parts of the body can affect desire as well. In particular, the genital organs communicate with the brain. Likewise, the brain communicates with the genital organs.

Desire in the brain causes changes in the pelvic organs. Perceiving these changes can, in turn, enhance sexual desire.

There is a condition called sexual arousal disorder. Normally, a woman becomes aroused through thoughts and fantasies, touch, or both. In response, blood flows to her pelvic area. This causes the genital tissues to swell and the vagina to moisten in readiness for sexual activity. With sexual arousal disorder, your mind desires sex, but your body does not follow suit.

Many things can cause or contribute to this disorder.

Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and diabetes can dampen sex drive.

Medications, including antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, can have sexual side effects. Emotional and psychological issues also can profoundly affect sexual desire – and performance.

Sexual arousal disorder in women often occurs after menopause, when estrogen levels drop. This can cause vaginal tissue to thin and secretions to decrease. Sex may become painful, resulting in less arousal. But even if sex is not painful, a woman may notice the absence of the pelvic changes that occur with increased blood flow and vaginal moistening. That can put a further damper on desire.

PUBLIC NOTICE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, OFFICE OF WATER RESOURES Chevron Environmental Management Company, 310 West 2nd Street, Lockport, IL 60441 has applied for a permit from the Office of Water Resources to authorize the removal and replacement of the Texaco Dam. The existing dam is located approximately 1800 ft. north of the West 2nd Street Bridge over the I&M Canal in Lockport.

The replacement dam is located 2900 ft. north. Cofferdams and temporary access ramps are proposed to aid in the construction of the proposed work. Both dams are categorized as Class III dams. Requests to review the plans may be directed to Bill Boyd at 847/6083100, extension 32025.

Rehabilitation of Exterior of the Building. The proposal from the MadHunt LLC generally provides for the purchase and development of the property at the Northwest Corner of State and 10th Streets which is a three story building with a basement. MadHunt LLC will improve the exterior of the building with an upgraded façade, which will include power washing and tuck pointing, new windows, an awning extending the fulllength of the building above the windows of the first floor restaurant, and a decorative cornice. Installation of Apartments.

MadHunt LLC will construct up to 12 apartments to be located on the 2nd and 3rd floors which will include studios, one-bedroom and/or two-bedroom apartments with an open floor plan, hardwood floors, double panel windows, stainless steel appliances, granite or fabricated stone countertops and in unit laundry facilities.

Operation of Street-Level Restaurant Fronting on State Street. MadHunt will have a restaurant, as defined in Chapter 111.01 of the Lockport Municipal Code, as its sole tenant on the street-level side fronting on State Street floor and will be permitted to have a banquet facility on the 2nd floor level as well.

A draft of the proposed agreement with MadHunt is available for inspection at the City Clerk's Office at The Central Square Building, second floor, 222 East Ninth St. Lockport, Il. 60441, during normal business hours.
