Bond lowered for 2nd suspect in Joliet boxing gym slaying

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man awaiting sentencing in connection with a fatal robbery outside a Joliet boxing gym had his bond lowered for a second time.

Jermain K. Bennett, 41, now has to post only 10 percent of a $150,000 bond to be released from the Will County jail, Judge Edward Burmila ruled Wednesday

during a hearing at the Will County Courthouse.

But if Bennett and his family can put up $15,000, he’ll Jermain K. have to stay Bennett at his parents’ house unless he needs emergency medical treatment, is attending a weekly church service or provides ad-

vance notice he is meeting with his attorney, Chuck Bretz.

Bennett’s bond conditions are identical to those his cousin, Kenneth G. Edwards, received in December. As with Edwards, Joliet police are allowed to enter his parents’ house to confirm Bennett is there, Burmila ordered.

On Aug. 9, 2012, Sean D. McGinn arrived to meet Bennett at the KO Zone, a gym they co-

owned at 218 E. Cass St. Police said McGinn expected to buy a large amount of cocaine from his business partner, but was fatally shot in the parking lot

by Edwards.

Bennett initially was charged with murder but last year pleaded guilty to robbery in exchange for testifying against Edwards at his murder trial. Bennett faces up to 30 years in prison.

Edwards was released on a recognizance bond after additional DNA testing was needed – jeopardizing his right to a speedy trial, Special Prosecutor Dave Neal said during earlier court proceedings. Neal said last month all the tests are finished, but Edwards’ trial date has yet to be scheduled.

In April, Bennett’s initial $2 million bond was lowered to $500,000.

Judge finds man guilty in Will County Courthouse beating

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man was found guilty Wednesday of attacking a man on the steps of the Will County Courthouse earlier this year.

Judge Dave Carlson, who conducted the three-day bench trial, found Martell K. Jones, 26, guilty of aggravated battery in a public place and mob action. Carlson decided Jones was not guilty of a second

count of aggravated battery to inflict great bodily harm.

Jones and two other men are charged with Martell K. beating Michael Jones Travis on Jan. 12.

“Mr. Jones isn’t simply a bystander,” Carlson said.

“The [surveillance] video supports you did the right thing on the elevator telling [the

other suspects to cool down].

If you’d kept on that track, you wouldn’t be sitting here.”

But although Travis testified he was unable to see Martell Jones hit him as Christian M. Blackwell and Makhi T. Jones did after he walked out the revolving doors leading to Jefferson Street, Martell Jones’ side of the story did not add up for the judge.

“You testified [Tuesday] the reason you took off after the [beating] was because you

thought you had a parole warrant,” Carlson said. “If you had a parole warrant and didn’t want to encounter the police, you wouldn’t be coming to the courthouse, you wouldn’t be riding the elevators and coming to watch a high-profile murder case.”

Travis and the trio had attended a pretrial hearing for 17-year-old Christopher Stamps, who is awaiting trial on charges he killed Latray Wright, 16, on Oct. 23, 2014,

during a drive-by shooting near Princeton and Fairmont avenues in Lockport Township. Police have said the Wright killing and courthouse beating are gang-related.

Travis required three stitches to his eyelid and seven stitches for the bridge of his nose, he testified Monday.

Martell Jones faces two to 10 years in prison, but could receive probation. Makhi Jones and Blackwell still are awaiting trial.

Basketball player Gallatin dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS EDWARDSVILLE – Harry Gallatin, the Hall of Fame basketball player who was a seven-time All-Star forward for the New York Knicks in the 1950s, died Wednesday.

He was 88.

The Knicks and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, where Gallatin was a former coach and athletic director, con-

firmed the death through Gallatin’s family. He died in Edwardsville.

Gallatin spent nine seasons with the Knicks, one in the Basketball Association of America and eight in the NBA, and finished his career in 1957-58 with the Detroit Pistons. The former Truman State star averaged 13.3 points and 11.9 rebounds in 630 regular-season NBA games.

ANNA ROSELLA GAY Born: Dec. 22, 1915 Died: Oct. 4, 2015

Anna Rosella Gay (nee Long), a long time Channahon resident who was celebrating her 100th year, passed

FRANCIS L. McCARTER Francis L. “Frank” McCarter, age 94, passed away October 1, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 20, 1921 in Gardner, the son of the late Austin and Mittie Mae (Petit) McCarter.

Frank’s lifelong love of aviation, dogs, and playing baseball began during his childhood in Gardner. After graduating from Gardner High School, he worked at Bull’s Grocery Store.

During WWII, he served in the Army Air Corps. He became one of the famed “Flying Tigers,” flying 60 missions in the China-Burma-India Theater, advancing to the rank of Captain.

Following the war, he worked at Caterpillar in Joliet for 32 years, retiring as a General Foreman in Inspection. During that time, he married Charlene Shepherd on April 7, 1951. Most of their married life was spent raising their family in Minooka.

He was a member of EAA Chapter 95 and the Warbirds of America Squadron 4. Frank enjoyed going to air museums and air shows where often he received cherished plane rides from friends. He and Charlene attended many Flying Tiger reunions all over the country.

Time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was what he treasured most. Frank’s favorite hobby was building and displaying model airplanes. He also collected many aircraft books. Yard work and visiting with special neighbors was also a great pastime.

The last two years of his life were spent peacefully under the most excellent, respectful and loving care by the staff at the Illinois Veterans’ Home - LaSalle.

PAUL T. McDERMOTT Paul T. McDermott passed away peacefully, Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Age 90 years.

Survived by his four children, Nancy (Paul) Martinucci, Dan (Deborah) McDermott, Ed (Bobbie) McDermott and Paul J. (Karen) McDermott; eight grandchildren, Katharine (Ron) Palermo, Danielle (Charlie) McDermott, Kevin (Trisha) McDermott, Aaron McDermott, Cory (Elizabeth) McDermott, Jim McDermott, Colleen McDermott and Will (Johanna) Thomas; nine great-grandchildren, Isabella and Ronnie Palermo, Brooke, Lorelei and Harley Rose McDermott, Molly and Lucille McDermott, Mila and Gavin Thomas; a daughter-in-law, Karen McDermott of Florida; and a sisterin-law, Marnean Briese. Upon his death, he was reunited in heaven with the love of his life, Eileen (nee Briese) McDermott; his adoring children, Lori, Sharon and Phil McDermott; his parents, Emmit and Catherine McDermott; a brother, Les McDermott; and two sisters, Mary Zuberski and Lucille Babjak.

Paul was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII, a long time member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond’s, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 1080 where he was also a Past Commander and a member of the Paralyzed Veterans Association. Paul was one of the original board members of United Cerebral Palsy. Retired from APSA as a computer specialist.

After his discharge from service he owned and operated City Service Gas Station on the corner of Raynor and Jefferson Street, whose moto was “From the Service to Service You”. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and working on cars.

Born in Rockdale and a longtime Rockdale resident. A life member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale. Retired from Uniroyal at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant after many years of service as a lab technician. During WWII, she

played softball on an industrial sponsored league.

She was a lifelong Cubs fan and proud of her Croatian heritage.

Mary was an avid bowler and was known for her excellent cooking and baking. Dinners at the Vicich home were extra special. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards and was an accomplished Euchre player. She loved watching game shows, they entertained her to no end. She especially enjoyed spending time with the children and grandchildren and was affectionately called “Gigi” by the great-grandchildren.

Preceded by her husband, Elmer F. Vicich, Sr. (1995); her parents, George and Catherine (nee Plesha ) Grahovac; five brothers, Eli, Andrew (Eva), Louie, John and Joe Grahovac; and one sister, Ann (Michael) Strainer.

GRACE D. VINCIGUERRA LYNNE WAECHTER Grace D. Vinciguerra (nee Dey), age 71. On Sunday, October 4, 2015, the good Lord called a loving, devoted and faithful servant without any warning on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi to himself. Although her life on earth was too brief, her gifts to others were extreme. She gave more to those around her than she ever gave herself. Her love of cross-stitching was the way she approached her life, meticulously and with attention to detail.

Grace’s greatest interest was her family. Humbly, she never appreciated how much she was loved and admired by our family and friends, she was our inspiration. She was the center of our lives, always encouraging all to love themselves with gentleness to reach their full potential and purpose in life. She will be deeply missed.

JOLIET – The Will County Health Department plans to cut 20 jobs in December.

The cuts are coming in mental health and family health services as the department faces a $900,000 deficit at the end of this fiscal year, department spokesman Vic Reato said Wednesday.

The cuts include 16 union employees and four managers. Notice was given Friday, Reato said.

“This is the result of a process that began very early in the year – January, in fact,” Reato said. “We contemplated there would be a significant need based on our estimate of a budget shortfall.”

Revenues are down, particularly in state grants that fund health services, Reato said. But the health department also is generating less revenue from clients who pay on sliding scales, he said.

The 20 job cuts come out of a department workforce of 331. The department budget is $29 million.

County health departments are making cuts around the state because of the state budget crisis, according to the Illinois Public Health Association.

Will County marks at least the 17th county health department that has cut staff, hours or services since the state stopped sending payments July 1 amid a budget impasse, said Miriam Link-Mullison, president of the association.

Link-Mullison, also the administrator for the Jackson County Health Department, said the budget crisis is beginning to cripple public health services in Illinois.

County health departments inspect restaurants, regulate drinking water and provide other services in cooperation with the state, she said. But the state stopped paying in July because of the budget impasse.

“It is, to me, unconscionable that the state is not paying for services we are providing, and we may not be paid for several months,” Link-Mullison said. “These are public health services that I think the citizens of Illinois have a right to.”

She called upon Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly to appropriate the $17.1 million normally provided to county agencies each year.

Reato said the Will County Health Department is making cuts in areas where it could find another agency in the area

providing the same or a similar service.

Cuts in Will County include: a program providing services to low-risk offenders referred by the court system, including counseling services for drug addicts and sex offenders; a drug addictions program; psychiatric services; and Healthy Families Illinois, which provides services for teen mothers.

Which union and management employees lose their jobs still could be affected by workplace rules for layoffs, Reato said.

Union employees are represented by Local 1028 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which received notice Friday, Reato said.

Individual management employees also were notified.

Reato said the department’s programs, which number more than 50, have been under review since the start of the year, when the funding shortfall was anticipated.

“We looked at what the state budget situation might be – which, obviously, was an uncertainty from the beginning,” he said.

The job cuts take effect Dec. 1, which marks the start of the department’s next fiscal year. Reato said the cuts were made to balance the budget next year.

Lockport Gallery’s doors still shut, future still hazy with budget impasse

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – No one is paying the rent at the Lockport Gallery, according to Lockport Mayor Steve Streit.

The state took over rent responsibilities for the museum in October, but has yet to actually make a payment, he said.

“They’re basically telling the building owner they’ll give them an ‘I owe you,’ ” Streit said.

The museum’s future has appeared precarious for months and became even more so in late September when Gov. Bruce Rauner ordered the Illinois State Museum system, including the Lockport Gallery, to shut its doors.

The city had been covering the rent for the space at 201 W. 10th St., appropriating funds from its summer art series after the state’s lease ended Aug. 1. In October, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources expressed interest in handling rent payment so it could keep the institution closed, Streit

said.

“IDNR will take over rental payments from the City of Lockport, and IDNR is working with the building owner on an agreement,” department spokesman Chris Young said via email. “Right now, the Illinois State Museum system facilities, including the Lockport Gallery, remain closed to the public.”

Streit had hoped the museum could remain open. The gallery was emptied over the summer because of a lapse in insurance, and the city and museum came together to create “The People’s Exhibit,” a show highlighting public art made in reaction to the Illinois budget crisis. The contents of the exhibit are under the city’s insurance.

In the wake of the recent shutterings, which also include the Sparta Shooting Complex in Springfield, state employees continue to draw paychecks because of a lawsuit that is in arbitration and therefore prevents layoffs.

er John Lustig was reached Wednesday at the closed museum, but declined to comment on the record because of the pending negotiations surrounding the museum.

The Department of Natural Resources has discussed putting together a committee to address the museum closings statewide and how to find permanent solutions regarding the museum system, Streit said.

Department representatives are set to meet Oct. 20 with interested parties across the system to begin talks, he said.

“Hopefully, this materializes,” Streit said.

He said the city would like to help the department revive the Lockport Gallery and is in the preliminary stages of identifying possible alternative space for the museum.

But if the committee doesn’t come together by Oct. 20, Streit said the city will re-evaluate taking over payment of the gallery’s rent and reopening the museum on its own – with or without the state’s approval.

Rauner tries to put pressure on Democrats for budget deal

Bruce Rauner sought Wednesday to ramp up pressure on majority Democrats over Illinois’ unprecedented budget stalemate, repeating calls for lawmakers to work with him to pass legislation he says would save businesses and taxpayers money or approve a tax hike without his support.

“Time’s up,” the Republican said during a speech before a business group in suburban Chicago. “The longer the Legislature takes, the more people will suffer, the bigger the deficit will grow.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When a program finally ends a 20-year drought in accomplishing some special feat, it might as well go out and do it in style, and that’s just what Lincoln-Way Central’s girls golfers did Wednesday.

The Knights captured their first regional championship since 1995 when they shot a 325 to capture top honors in the Class AA Plainfield Central Regional at Wedgewood Golf Course by 18 strokes over runner-up Lockport.

Providence Catholic fired a 346 to claim the third and final qualifying spot for Monday’s Neuqua Valley Sectional at Naperbrook Golf Course. In addition, 10 individuals representing five schools also advanced to the sectional.

With their freshman duo of Brianne Bolden and Grace Curran leading the way, coach Brian Shannon’s Knights followed up on their first conference title in 20 years by not only qualifying as a team for sectionals for the first time since 2008, but easily winning the title.

“It’s just awesome to see how the two freshmen have helped success come to our whole program,” Shannon said. “I owe a lot to a lot of people who have gotten the girls to practice in the winter and their commitment to our summer program or playing in tournaments.

“When you have two phenomenal players like Grace and Brianne, it’s about getting the other girls to want to practice more. You have to have talent to win, but our coaches and the parents are dedicated to help out so that we’re not go-

ing to lose with talent.”

Bolden put together nines of 35 and 33 to win medalist honors with a 68, which was three strokes better than the runner-up, Providence Catholic’s Alyssa Gromala. Curran followed up on a 40 with a 36 to shoot a 76, which was good for third place.

“I knew that our team had a good chance to win so I just came out and played my best,” Bolden said. “I was able to putt really well and drop a lot of birdies. The weather couldn’t have been better, and I was super prepared to play today and

just had a good round.

“Grace and I have been playing together since first grade and we’ve never stopped. I’ve never played on a team before so being on this team, I’ve created my best friends, girls who I’m with every day. This year has been the most fun that I’ve had in my golf experience.”

Also for the Knights, Madeline Karlson tied for fifth with an 85 while Sarah Scheer also scored with a 96. Hanah Mastandrea (99) and Zoe Zurawski also competed.

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – They relived it all, one last time – Scott Darling’s relief heroics, Corey Crawford’s second-round redemption, Andrew Shaw’s disallowed headbutt goal, Jonathan Toews’ Ducks-defiance, and Duncan Keith’s Stanley Cup-clincher – necks craning and smiles widening as they watched along on the scoreboard high above.

More than 22,000 glowing wristbands glittered in the stands as radio man John Wiedeman’s voice raised higher and higher with each goal, each overtime, each victory.

The Blackhawks’ sixth Stanley Cup – the third in six seasons for this generation – was undeniably their toughest, and since it was won on home ice, it might have been the sweetest. On Wednesday night, the Hawks commemorated it in perpetuity with one more massive banner in the rafters, offering a neat bit of symmetry with the Bulls banners hanging above the other end of the rink.

“To watch the banner go up is pretty awesome,” Jonathan Toews said before the game.

“You realize how big it is and all of a sudden it gets all the way up there and it just looks like a tiny little thing.”

The Hawks had only 103 seconds to bask in the past before the New York Rangers slapped them back into the present with a quick goal and an eventual 3-2 party-pooping victory in Wednesday’s season opener.

While the night was about honoring the immediate past, it also offered some glimpses of the immediate future – for better and for worse. On the plus side, Russian phenom Artemi Panarin scored the first goal of his NHL career off a pass by Patrick Kane, and Teuvo Teravainen finished off a play by Toews (forcing a turnover) and Marian Hossa (pouncing and passing) with a goal of his own. The 23-year-old Panarin and 21-yearold Teravainen comprise the Hawks’ next wave of gifted offensive talents.

Or maybe they’re just too good to care.

Jake Arrieta allowed four hits in nine dominant innings, and the Cubs rolled to a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL wild-card game Wednesday night.

Arrieta struck out 11 without a walk. He also dusted himself off after getting plunked

by Pittsburgh reliever Tony Watson to send the Cubs to the NL Division Series in St. Louis starting on Friday.

“I’m exhausted. I haven’t felt this way all year,” said Arrieta, who led the majors with 22 wins. “This atmosphere, the energy was unbelievable.

Tried to use it to the best of my ability. They were loud, they were really loud.”

Dexter Fowler homered and scored three times for the Cubs. Kyle Schwarber added a towering two-run shot off Pittsburgh starter Gerrit Cole as Chicago raced to an early lead and let Arrieta do the rest.

The largest crowd ever at PNC Park failed to rattle Arrieta or one of baseball’s youngest teams. First-year manager Joe Maddon’s club played with swagger and confidence and looked right at home while snapping a nine-game playoff losing streak that dated to the 2003 NL Championship Series.

“It’s tremendous for the city. It’s been a while,” Arrieta said. “Chicago’s been waiting for this, but it’s only step one.”

Pirates utility player Sean Rodriguez, who’d already been pulled, was ejected and proceeded to give an unsuspecting water cooler a series of one-two combinations, eventually sending it tumbling to the ground.

Pittsburgh had no such luck against Arrieta, with Hurdle seemingly flummoxed on how to get to attack a righthander who has matured from raw project into overpowering force.

Hurdle shelved slugger Pedro Alvarez – whose 27 homers led the team but whose 23 errors made him a defensive liability – in favor of more sure-handed Rodriguez. Hurdle pointed to the athleticism Rodriguez brought as a major factor, figuring the Pirates would need to get creative to score against Arrieta rather than hope Alvarez runs into the kind of mistake Arrieta has avoided nearly all season.

Fleener hopes to build off 9-catch game It seems as if only yesterday when Coby Fleener was enjoying his breakout season as a receiver at Joliet Catholic.

Look at him now. After an All-America college career as a tight end at Stanford, Fleener is in his fourth season with the Indianapolis Colts. In Sunday’s 16-13 overtime victory over Jacksonville, he was targeted 12 times and caught nine passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.

After not being targeted in Week 2, Fleener caught four passes in Week 3 and his big game Sunday brought him up to 14 receptions for 139 yards for the season, a 9.9 average.

6. Plainfield North (4-2): The Tigers will finish against Oswego and Minooka, so they would like nothing better than to get their fifth victory and probably secure a playoff berth in Friday night’s game at Romeoville.

In a 2014 battle for the top spot in the Southwest Suburban Blue, the Vikings appeared golden. Not so fast.

Behind quarterback Mike Weller, wide receiver John Zelenik and junior running back Liam Morrissey, the Griffins rallied past the Vikings, 43-40, and went on to win the league title. Weller passed for 357 yards and four touchdowns. Zelenik caught 11 passes for 156 yards and three touch-

downs. Morrissey rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner with four minutes to go.

Weller and Zelenik have moved on, but Morrissey and the 2015 Griffins will square off with H-F on Friday night in Homewood, again in a battle for league supremacy. H-F (6-0, 4-0) is ranked No. 1 in the state. The Vikings have the fifth-highest scoring offense in the state (53-point average) and have allowed 9.3.

Lincoln-Way (5-1, 4-0) in ranked No. 6 in Class 7A. The Griffins average 37 points and allow 6.4, seventh best in the state.

H-F quarterback Bryce Gray has thrown for 1,690 yards and 19 touch-

downs. Receiver Kendric Pryor has caught 25 passes for more than 500 yards and nine touchdowns. The Harley-Hampton brothers, Deante and Devonte, have run through and around the opposition, combining for 1,100 yards and 20 touchdowns rushing and more than 600 yards and seven touchdowns receiving.

The Griffins counter with quarterback Brandon Bauer. He has completed 62 of 108 passes for 768 yards and seven touchdowns. He can run, too, as evidenced by his 425 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

Morrissey has seen limited time because of injuries. Nigel Muhammad has filled in with a team-leading 525 rushing yards with six touchdowns.

long career with a minimum of injury issues is more fortunate than many.

Yet, an NFL career is exactly what high-caliber football players aspire to achieve. Six or seven years from now, you wonder if we will be watching a few of our current high school standouts on Sundays.

To the Editor: Why does the pope know that climate change is real? One reason is because of Catholics around the world reporting on local conditions. That’s a massive amount of research.

Second is the Vatican spends lots of money on scientific research. Its scientists are not hamstrung by ulterior motives. They are just required to keep the Vatican informed before telling the rest of the world.

Interestingly, the church during the Dark Ages quashed science while the Muslims made great advances. Now the situation is somewhat reversed. That might be too simplistic, because the church still has a foot in the past just as some Muslims want to pull the world back into the past.

The pope knows we are screwing up the Earth.

Add him to the list of scientists, world leaders and the billions who consider global warming to be the No. 1 threat to humanity.

Guns not the problem

To the Editor: Now I’m getting political. So another nut job shoots up more people, and the guns are the problem.

What if a person couldn’t get guns, so he or she fills a bottle with gasoline, walks into a room full of people, lights a wick made from rags and throws it at the people? Do we ban bottles, gasoline and rags?

Let’s look at another scenario. How about a person reads a magazine story or a comic book or sees a violent movie and goes out and kills someone. Do we quit reading or watching movies?

Let’s get real, folks. We are a society made up of a melting pot of people, many of whom are suffering from mental illness, hate or greed – any of which could and does trigger violence. This has been going on since creation.

Again I say, guns don’t kill people – people kill people. So let’s quit pushing for more and more gun control until there are no more guns and we are now under the full protection of some nut job in Washington – or, the way things are going, some dictator.

Our forefathers put our right to bear arms in our Constitution for more than just hunting. Think about it.

‘Simple messages’ often the most important Pope Francis came and went, and our headlines remained the same.

Congress missed an opportunity to make progress in our intractable abortion debate. Oregon families mourned loved ones killed in another shooting.

We yell about laws to address all these things, but there’s something more that is needed. Something more foundational.

Bryan Carter runs the Gesu School, a Jesuit school in Philadelphia. He is one of many Catholics I met in Philadelphia who wanted to tell their Catholic stories as the world descended on the City of Brotherly Love.

Some of Carter’s students tangoed for the pope during a festival welcoming him to town. Students at the Gesu School know how to tango because of a woman named Sue Shea, who founded the nonprofit Dancing With the Students to offer ballroom dancing to students, parents and teachers in impoverished areas of the city. Students learn a skill, have some fun – occasionally getting gigs such as a Phillies or 76ers game – and learn respect, manners and confidence.

Carter explains that, in addition to “learning the tango, meringue, swing and waltz, our young men understand how to approach a young lady to ask for a dance; the young ladies now know how they should be approached by young men.” And Shea, he said, “is not only a true champion for Gesu School and our children, but also hundreds of children throughout Philadelphia.” Her program, founded 10 years ago, is in 10 schools around the area.

Needless to say, the visit of the first Jesuit pope from the Americas was a big deal for Gesu. But for Car-

When the dancing stopped, there was prayer. Pope Francis passed Carter and raised his hand in blessing. This was not a close encounter with a celebrity so much as an experience of the universal church, right at home. Carter was particularly moved by praying the “Our Father” on Benjamin Franklin Parkway with Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

While some dismiss Pope Francis for his seemingly simple messages, there is power there. Gospel power.

Power that gets people to do unselfish things that don’t always make sense by worldly standards. These messages get to the heart of what we’re missing in our daily lives.

Reflecting on what the pope said that Sunday during Mass, Carter said, “The homily emphasized how small gestures of love help cultivate faith, and how those small gestures could serve to create a better, more loving world. ‘Like happiness, holiness is always tied to little gestures,’ he said.”

Francis’ sermon continued: “These little gestures are those we learn at home, in the family. ... They are the quiet things done by mothers and grandmothers, by fathers and grandfathers, by children. They are little signs of tenderness, affection and compassion.”

And so, on Monday, a tired Carter built some daddy-daughter time, involving a playground and

milkshakes, into his day. Little gestures might not seem heroic, but they are. They build habits that inculcate virtue.

A good Jesuit, Pope Francis leads people in examining their consciences, identifying their motivations and responses, and making changes in the light of faith. Carter prays the visit helps people be “men and women for others,” as a Jesuit tenet puts it. That might not be a political manifesto, but it has the power of a revolution when put into practice.

“Our various religious traditions serve society primarily by the message they proclaim,” said the pope.

“They call individuals and communities to worship God, the source of all life, liberty and happiness. ... They call to conversion, reconciliation, concern for the future of society, self-sacrifice in the service of the common good, and compassion for those in need.”

That’s why the pope coming here was important: It gave us a moment to stop and remember. Reflections on his words are in order for anyone who wants something better than distractions and incivility. People who are doing good, energized to do more: That’s freedom at work, and that’s the fuel of a healthy society.

Whether we’re talking about policy or daddy-daughter time, “love one another” is a message that never gets old, and one that we have not yet perfected.

Week spotlights smoke detectors, firefighters’ efforts

There’s never a down time for fire risk, but the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire marks Fire Prevention Week each year.

“With all the hustle and bustle of daily life, marking this week gives us the opportunity to get a message out each year,” Joliet Fire Chief Joe Formhals said. “And if a few people who get that message stop and check something or pay a little more attention, then it is worth it.”

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Hear the beep where you sleep,” and is meant to encourage installing smoke alarms in every bedroom. Formhals and Deputy Chief Ray Randich said it is surprising how many homes still don’t have smoke detectors installed or working.

“For nearly 20 years, [detectors] have been hardwired in for new home construction, but there’s no regulation or inspection for older homes,” Randich said.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms increase the odds of surviving a house fire by 50 percent. When smoke alarms fail, it’s because the batteries are missing, disconnected or dead, Formhals said.

Incidentally, half of home fire deaths occur during nighttime hours, but only one in five home fires is reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., according to the NFPA.

Most brands don’t contain enough, and some don’t contain any at all. Some home water treatment systems filter out fluoride.

Most communities in the United States add fluoride to their drinking water. If your community doesn’t or if you prefer to drink bottled water or if your filter removes fluoride, you may need to get fluoride from other sources.

As I mentioned, getting a lot of fluoride can be deadly. But an adult would need to drink 5,000 to 10,000 glasses of fluoridated water in one sitting to take in enough fluoride to be at risk.

Anyone trying to drink that much water would get sick well before they got close to drinking that amount. (Yes, you can make yourself very sick by drinking huge amounts of pure water, just from the water.)

A minor drawback to using fluoride is it can discolor tooth enamel.

Usually, the discoloration is nearly unnoticeable.

Can you help me sort this out?

Dear Reader: There is no treatment that doesn’t carry some risk along with the benefit. The question always is how the benefit compares to the risk.

What’s the risk with fluoride? Curious young children can overdose on fluoride if they get their hands on it. They might consume improperly stored fluoride tablets.

Or they might eat a large amount of a fluoridated toothpaste or drink a large amount of fluoridated mouth rinse.

On the other hand, for most children and adults, fluoride – in appropriate amounts – is a powerful ally in the fight against tooth decay. Its benefits far exceed the risks. And the risks are nil if you are careful about keeping fluoride out of the reach of young children.

Fluoride is a common mineral found in soil, all of the Earth’s water sources and a variety of foods, from black tea to fruit juice to canned crab.

Fluoride helps teeth resist being broken down by acid from plaque bacteria. (Plaque is the sticky film that coats our teeth between brushings.)

Fluoride also boosts the body’s ability to rebuild tooth enamel when acid-producing bacteria dissolve it. This new enamel is actually harder and more decay-resistant than the enamel on the original surface of the tooth. In addition, fluoride seems to limit the ability of plaque to stick to the tooth surface.

Children and adults can help prevent tooth decay by getting some fluoride every day. One of the simplest ways to get fluoride is by drinking water that contains it, either naturally or because fluoride has been added to it.

Dear Abby: I am a widow in my early 50s. While I was dating a prominent OB-GYN, I found out he’s involved in criminal activity – operating a so-called “pill mill.” On our last date, he asked me to join an escort service he was starting.

I notified the medical board of the state he’s practicing in and various government agencies. It amazes me he is still practicing. He’s doing abortions, which means he has access to vulnerable young women. Knowing this, I have lost trust in our medical establishment. Nothing seems to affect this man’s success and practice.

I have given up and am moving far away. What should I do? Have I done everything possible? This is obviously a very difficult situation for me. I am deeply concerned about his patients.

Work on downtown Joliet span could last into November, officials say

The bridge over the Des Plaines River in downtown Joliet was closed in July for a paint job that was scheduled for completion in mid-October.

The discovery of structural problems during the course of the paint job has led to repair work that has slowed down the completion of the project, Guy Tridgell, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said Wednesday.

“We don’t know for sure when it will reopen,” Tridgell said.

He left open the possibility the job still could be done in October. But it also could continue into November, depending on weather conditions.

“We expect the repair work to wrap up sometime this month,” he said. “Painting is weather dependent. If weather is favorable, it could wrap up this year.”

Joliet Public Works Manager James Trizna told the Joliet City Council on Tuesday night that because of project delays, painting will be shut down at some point and restarted in

the spring.

Tridgell, however, said IDOT plans to continue painting as long as weather allows in hopes of finishing the job before the end of the year. If it is not done, painting will resume in the spring, he said.

The downtown Joliet drawbridges are maintained by IDOT. Maintenance jobs on the

bridges often last longer than expected as crews find more mechanical problems while working on the structures, which were built in the 1920s.

But traffic jams at other bridges leading in and out of downtown, especially during the afternoon rush hour, prompted a discussion at the City Council meeting on what can be done to relieve the con-

gestion.

Councilman Jim McFarland asked police to look into the possibility of putting officers at intersections to regulate traffic.

McFarland said Wednesday he has heard from constituents who believe traffic signals and stop signs create congestion problems because of additional traffic going to the other

bridges with Jefferson closed.

“In the meantime, the city needs to look at whether there are other mechanisms for moving the flow of traffic into downtown or out of downtown more efficiently,” he said. “People are avoiding downtown not only because of the bridge being closed, but it’s a mess getting in and out of town.”

Union Pacific plans new bridge in Wilmington

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Union Pacific wants to replace its railroad bridge over the Kankakee River in Wilmington with two bridges.

The project needs a permit from the state because it spans a public river.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is taking comments on the project until

Oct. 29.

The department issued a public notice describing details of the project. The bridge is north of Route 53.

Union Pacific plans to replace the existing bridge, which has a single railroad track, with two side-by-side bridges that will carry two tracks.

The new bridges will be longer and higher than the existing bridge. The vertical

clearance on the new bridges will be between 21.3 feet and 26.7 feet above normal water level. One bridge will be 573 feet long, and the other will be 604 feet long.

Illinois Constructors Corp. will build two temporary steel bridges to be used during demolition and construction.

Gary Jereb, with the Department of Natural Resources, said he does not know the timetable for the project. But

permit applications proposed construction dates in 2015.

The Union Pacific did not respond Wednesday to requests for comment.

Comments on the project must be on the following issues: interference with navigation on the river; encroachment on the river; and impairment with the rights, interests and uses of the river by the public.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Township High School District 204 and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy Counties are preparing to start the Mentor2.0 program this month.

The mentor-matching program for students has made 95 matches so far but is looking for a few more mentors, especially one in the medical field, said Courtney Schaus, Mentor2.0 program manager.

The Mentor2.0 program began last year and matched 50 students with mentors. The program is influenced by New York-based iMentor, which has provided 8,000 students with mentors since 1999.

Schaus said the program is in need of a mentor for a handful of students. There also is a need for a mentor who specializes in the medical field, as one student has shown interest in it, she said.

The first Mentor2.0 event – introducing students to their mentors – is scheduled for Oct. 20 at Joliet Central and Oct. 21 at Joliet West.

“We’ll always be taking in mentors throughout the year, just in case a mentor drops

out,” Schaus said.

In August, Big Brothers Big Sisters was looking for more male volunteers to join Mentor2.0. The number of volunteers who applied at that point was heavy on women, Schaus said at the time.

In the first year of the program, Big Brothers Big Sisters reported 71 percent of mentors helped students research potential colleges, and 72 percent helped them create a college plan to align with future education.

One of the goals of Mentor2.0 is to help students academically and socially, as well as prepare them for college.

District officials have said their vision for the program is to have students who have been through the program come back to District 204 and become mentors themselves for other students.

People interested in becoming a mentor must be at least 21 years of age and have earned a college degree. They can apply online through the organization’s website, bbbswillgrundy.org.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A fire that started about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lone Star Restaurant and Lounge had Channahon Fire Protection District and police crews still on scene as of 8 p.m., Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

Although Wold said late Wednesday evening that the extent of the damage was not yet known, he expected that the restaurant, at 25208 W. Eames St., would be closed for repairs for the immediate future.

Early indications were that the fire might have started in or on the roof, Wold said.

JOLIET – Enrollment at Joliet Public Schools District 86 is down after several years of growth.

Board of School Inspectors were shown the 2015-16 enrollment report at Wednesday’s board meeting. In the report, 11 schools within the district showed a drop in enrollment, eight schools had an increase and two schools didn’t show much change.

The districtwide decrease – the second year in a row – was what district officials expected, said Tanisha Cannon, assistant superintendent for student services.

“We took a spike at one point, and now we’re kind of leveling out to where we expected we would be based on the projections,” Cannon said, referring to a five-year forecast district officials conducted.

The 11 schools that showed a decrease this year were: Culbertson Elementary, Cunningham Elementary, Keith Elementary, Marshall Elementary, Marycrest Early

Childhood Center, Sanchez Elementary, Sandburg Elementary, Taft Elementary, Thigpen Elementary, Woodland Elementary and Gompers Junior High.

The eight schools with an increase were: Farragut Elementary, Forest Park Individual Education School, Singleton Elementary, Pershing Elementary, Thompson Instructional Center, Dirksen Junior High, Hufford Junior High and Washington Junior High.

Enrollment at Eisenhower Academy was down by one student, and Jefferson Elementary gained two students.

Board inspector Quinn Adamowski asked about the student capacity for Sanchez. Enrollment at the school steadily decreased from 1,127 students in 2012 to 912 this year.

“That’s quite a precipitous drop,” he said.

E. Wesley Russell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services, said district officials were seeing a trend of low birth rates with elementary schools.

Plainfield Plan Commission backs controversial auto shop

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The pleas of Plainfield residents for the Plan Commission to deny recommending a special-use permit for an auto body shop had commissioners on the fence Tuesday about supporting the new development.

“Since I became a commissioner ... I think this is one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make,” Andy Heinen said.

Ultimately, a special-use permit and site plan review received the recommendation of trustees, although the vote wasn’t unanimous.

The auto shop would be a relocation of 59 Auto Repair at 24010 W. Renwick Road to 2 acres between the Vintage Harvest subdivision and

Plainfield Congregational Church. If approved, the shop will be about 45 feet from the fences of homes, which has many residents upset.

“I work the midnight shift and sleep in the daytime,” said Rebecca Rolnik, who lives on Burgundy Lane, the closest street to the proposed shop.

“It’s a homeowner’s nightmare.”

Several other residents called on commissioners to turn down the project because of noise pollution and potential lowering of property values.

But shop owner Richard Brauer, prospective landowner Rick McCraney and site Realtor Bill Caton spoke in support of the development.

PLAINFIELD – One of the largest industrial buildings in Plainfield soon could turn into a church and recreational facility.

The Plainfield Plan Commission unanimously voted Tuesday to recommend a special-use permit for the relocation of the Community Christian Church to 24035 W. Riverwalk Court, the site of the old Plainfield Molding company. The permit eventually will go to the Village Board for final approval.

The site has sat vacant for several years, despite efforts to find a user.

About 52,000 square feet of the 92,500-square-foot building would house the church. The remaining indoor space would be reserved for recreational use.

“We’re talking, really, about a community center here,” said Russell Whitaker, a Naperville-based lawyer representing the Community Christian Church.

The church, with an average weekly attendance of 700 members, would be moving from its 14,500-square-foot

space at 13731 S. Route 30.

The church space would take up the northern half of the building with a 900-seat sanctuary in the west and room for religious education, special needs, volunteer and youth programming.

An upper mezzanine space would house administrative offices, a large group room and more educational areas.

The recreational space at the southern half of the building would be operated by a third party and could include an indoor soccer field, indoor basketball and volleyball courts and a training and conditioning area.

A cafe would be built near the center with lounge seating, multipurpose rooms and centrally located restrooms.

Discussion on the project focused on the loss of property tax revenue from the site because of the religious use.

“My understanding is that if the church ran the entire thing, it could come under that umbrella,” commissioner John Renzi said, noting the recent trend of churches moving into taxable property and adding that even with a mixed use, people could find ways to exploit the future tax-exempt
