Partnership brings playgrounds to parks

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than 200 Farragut Elementary students joined Joliet native Brenton Wadsworth as well as school and park district officials Tuesday to inaugurate a new Preservation Park playground.

The new Brenton Wadsworth Playground is part of a joint initiative called “5 Parks. 1 Goal.” to upgrade playgrounds at Marycrest, Farragut, Thomas Jefferson, Taft and Carl Sandburg schools.

The Joliet Park District teamed up with Joliet School District 86, Joliet Township and the Joliet Park Foundation to develop the program.

“When you ask for something for the benefit for youth, you see this kind of turnout,” District 86 Superintendent Charles Coleman said.

“This is a great example of a mission carried out,” said Wadsworth, a golf course designer who grew up in District 86. He donated to the construction of the new playground, which was named after him.

Wadsworth joined children and officials from several local organizations in cutting the ribbon on the new playground Tuesday.

playground last school year.

The new playground, which takes up the middle of the park, has several sets of swings, monkey bars, slides and other equipment. It also features a cushioned surface for child safety and easier maintenance.

The $140,000 playground was funded through grants, fundraising and donations.

“This is good for the kids,” said nearby resident Rigo Cisneros, who has children at Farragut and Hufford Junior High. “[The old playground] didn’t have many swings. This has more space, and I like the rubber ground for safety of kids.”

Joliet Park District Executive Director Dominic Egizio said the five parks program

stemmed from a previous partnership between the park district and Joliet School District 86.

“There was an agreement in the ’80s to build five playgrounds at the schools,” Egizio said. “It was good at the time, but there was nothing in place for when the playgrounds were worn out or became unsafe.”

Because the playgrounds were on school district property, the park district wasn’t eligible for grants to upgrade the playgrounds, so it approached the school district for the project.

“This represents a great partnership of various entities in the community,” Coleman said.

Teen arrested after home invasion

JOLIET – A teen was arrested Monday after a home invasion was reported on Joliet’s far West Side.

About 4 a.m., a 26-year-old man was awakened in his home in the 1800 block of Castle Ridge Drive by his 18-year-old girlfriend screaming, according to Capt. Tab Jensen.

“The man had a pillowcase placed over his head, was tied with zip ties and beaten on the head by intruders who de-

manded money,” Jensen said.

The woman also was tied up, but after the intruders left, the man freed himself and called police shortly after 4:30 a.m., Jensen said.

“There were at least two subjects, possibly more. The victims recognized a 17-yearold boy from being at the house on prior occasions,” Jensen said.

Officers spotted the boy riding in a vehicle at 9:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of Plainfield Road, according to police reports. The boy fled from the car

and was chased on foot before he was caught trying to hide behind a tree, Jensen said.

He allegedly had three grams of marijuana and a counterfeit $20 bill in his pockets when he was taken into custody.

The teen was charged with aggravated battery, residential burglary, marijuana possession and forgery and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Jensen said the home invasion remained under investigation Tuesday.

ON THE JOB LESSONS Joliet emphasizes National Fire Prevention Week

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – From students to Exchange Club members to veteran firefighters – everyone can learn something during National Fire Prevention Week.

Fire prevention week, which marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, also brought 3,000 posters submitted by Joliet students to highlight fire prevention and emergency instructions.

“It’s very important for young students to learn about the importance of fire safety,” Deputy Chief Ray Randich said.

Winning posters came from Eisenhower Academy first-grader Jessica Del Toro, St. Paul the Apostle second-grader Jocelyn Costilla, Ridge Elementary third-grader Yoshi Takase, Cathedral of St. Raymond fourth-grader Myles Holbrook and William B. Orenic Intermediate fifth-grader Kylah Gray.

The students were recognized Tuesday during an Exchange Club luncheon, where members heard how a veteran fireman’s experience and demand for safety saved a crew from death or serious injury.

Timely intervention On Dec. 31, firefighters were searching a three-story home for fire that might have been hidden in the walls, Chief Joe

Formhals said. Because there was no smoke or heat inside, none of the crews were wearing breathing equipment until Capt. John Merriman arrived and made every firefighter stop and do so.

“Within minutes of everyone getting their [breathing equipment] on, a firefighter opened up a knee wall ... causing the room to backdraft,” Formhals said. Fire blew into the face of the firefighter, forced the door to the floor below closed and immediately filled the room.

“Because of Capt. Merriman’s training, experience and the fact that he always does things the right John way no matter Merriman what the situation, everyone was able to walk away safely from that fire scene,” Formhals said.

Merriman, a 25-year-veteran, was named the Exchange Club 2014 Firefighter of the Year. He said he is being recognized by the community for a team effort.

“I truly believe this is an honor deserved by many on a daily basis,” he said Tuesday during the award presentation at the Jacob Henry Mansion.

The two men – veterans themselves – would talk after a day spent giving sandwiches and clothes to hundreds of veterans. What struck Picciolo about Proffitt was his immense compassion for people too poor to care for themselves.

“I don’t know how some guy could give so much to strangers,” he said.

For almost 25 years, Proffitt, with the help of family and several veteran groups, dedicated his life to helping Chicago’s homeless, many of them veterans. He died Sept.

30 from an infection in his lungs but he also struggled with leukemia. He was 65.

Veterans on Tuesday provided military honors for Proffitt, a Marine Corps veteran.

Proffitt was a “veteran’s veteran” with boundless energy, said Jim Singler, his friend and commander at VFW Post 12059 in Plainfield.

“He had the biggest heart in the world,” Singler said.

George Smith met Proffitt four years ago at a cancer support group. The two became friends.

“He was a just real good guy and a great friend,” Smith said.

Proffitt served in the Marines from 1969 to 1971 but never went to Vietnam, Picciolo said. Proffitt decided years later to help homeless veterans. He traveled in a station wagon to veterans with a pot of coffee and sandwiches.

He formed the Chicago Homeless Sandwich Run, which feeds more than 800 people each week. Of those, 35 to 40 percent are veterans, according to the organization’s website.

Ronald Wagenhofer, a veteran and friend, said Proffitt was intense and compassionate.

“I don’t think people in the community realize how many veteran homeless we have …

they fall through the cracks, which is sad,” Wagenhofer said. “Thanks to people like Jim, we can help these people.

It’s important to treat them as human beings and Jim did that.”

In honor of Proffitt’s work with veterans, a transitional living home for homeless veterans was named after him.

Veterans can be homeless for a variety of reasons, Picciolo said. Some have mental health problems and some come back from combat and “can’t cope with the world,” he said.

Proffitt, his family and other veterans would travel to Washington, D.C., every Veterans Day to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

His friend Ronald Pasko said his family still is willing to make the trip this year, helping needy veterans as Proffitt would.

“Even in Washington, if there was a veteran in need of help, he would be there,” Pasko said.

Plainfield police get 2.5 percent pay hikes

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield police will get 2.5 percent pay increases in each of the next four years, according to a contract approved this week.

The new contract with the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Plainfield Chapter 93 was approved by the Village Board Monday night.

The contract is retroactive to May 1. But the pay increases will not start until May 2015.

Starting annual pay for a police officer is now $56,900 and will rise to $62,800. Pay at eight years of experience will rise from the current level of $90,400 to $99,800.

Police Chief John Konopek and Village Administrator Brian Murphy have worked

with union leaders over the past year on the new four-year contract.

“The negotiations were very cordial,” Konopek said.

“There was a learning curve for both sides that led to a delay in the process. But I can’t say enough good things about the patrol officers and how we all worked together.”

Under the new contract, officers will receive a 2.5 percent pay increase each year.

The old, expired contract gave officers a 2 percent increase.

Konopek said the rest of the contract remained the same, except for a couple issues that have been clarified.

“We haven’t had anybody that really reached retire-

ment age in the old contract,” Konopek said. “But now some officers are getting close. So we cleared up the wording of how they are eligible for payout after they retire.”

The new contract also lays out more defined rules on hiring officers for security at events and clears up language for travel compensation.

DuPage River Trail The village also approved intergovernmental agreements with the Plainfield Township Park District for the development of the DuPage River Trail. The park district is scheduled to approve the intergovernmental agreements Wednesday.

State considers temporary closing of Elwood crossing

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – An Illinois Commerce Commission administrative law judge will consider whether to temporarily close a controversial railroad crossing later this month.

A hearing regarding safety concerns at the crossing has been set for Oct. 29 in Chicago, ICC spokeswoman Beth Bosch said.

There, the ICC, which governs the state’s railway system, will hear evidence on whether the state should temporarily close the crossing at Walter Strawn Drive or make the road one-way, Bosch said.

Gates were broken nearly 50 times last year, and the village has been trying to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area.

At a status hearing on Tuesday in Chicago, officials from Union Pacific, Illinois Department of Transportation, Elwood and the ICC all urged the administrative law judge to temporarily close the crossing, said Scott Burnham, spokesman for Elwood.

But CenterPoint Properties, the developer of two nearby intermodals, objected.

Tuesday’s ICC hearing was one of several held recently concerning ongoing issues at the intersection of Route 53 and Walter Strawn Drive. Earlier this year, the ICC reopened a 2001 case brought forward by Elwood amid safety concerns.

If the crossing is closed, state transportation officials would conduct a two-year engineering study on the feasibility of building an overpass to separate traffic from the crossing.

JOLIET – A man accused of murdering his mother and tossing her body in the Des Plaines River has been offered a plea deal.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald told Judge Carla Policandriotes on Tuesday that Charles “C.J.” McCullum, 22, will have three weeks before his next court appearance to consider pleading guilty to reduced charges.

Fitzgerald did not indicate how much prison time Mc-

Cullum would receive, but said the state’s attorney’s office discussed the deal with Jeanie Parker’s famiCharles ly before it was McCullum presented.

McCullum is charged with two counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide for allegedly slaying Parker, 54, on March 20, 2013, in their Fifth Avenue home. He faces life in prison.

Investigators allege that, during an argument, McCullum choked Parker, stabbed

her with two knives and used a baseball bat to hammer one blade into her body. He then allegedly drove to Bluff Park and threw her body into the water, where it remained submerged for three weeks.

McCullum has received three different evaluations from psychiatrists and psychologists – two agreeing he was insane at the time. Fitzgerald on Tuesday also withdrew an earlier request for a fourth evaluation.

“Even if the plea deal is rejected [by McCullum] we will not seek another expert,” he said.

$500 fine to “give the ordinance some teeth.”

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said Tuesday night he supports the proposed increase. He said he hopes to build up the police station’s citizens’ patrol program that – until 2012 – worked closely with the police department’s traffic division in identifying violators. The program has few volunteers left, he said, but that he’s “actively looking” for more volunteers to join the ranks.

The increased fine – coupled with better collaboration between volunteers and the police’s traffic division – might

deter people from parking in handicapped spots, he said.

In other news: The Council had nothing but good things to say about the Joliet Park District’s $19.5 million referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot. If passed, the money would go towards planned security and safety improvements within local parks, a new recreation center on the city’s East Side and other reforestation efforts.

Under the referendum, residents would pay an additional $20.50 a year per $100,000 home value on the park district portion of their taxes.

Color is another way to change up your hair, and this fall the popular colors include metallics such as “rose gold” and bronze. Highlights are also an ongoing trendy choice, with ombre (light to dark, or vice versa) becoming a favorite.

One killed, one injured in crash

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – A University Park man was killed Tuesday in a traffic crash on Laraway Road.

Deputy Police Chief Kevin Keegan said the collision happened about 6:45 a.m., when a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country traveling east struck a westbound 2007 Ford Tau-

rus near the center line oneeighth of a mile west of 80th Avenue.

The driver of the Taurus, Anthony B. Rutledge, 57, was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 7:42 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

The driver of the Town and Country, a 55-year-old woman,

was “conscious and breathing,” according to Frankfort firefighters. She also was taken to Silver Cross, but her condition was unavailable Tuesday afternoon.

Keegan said the driver who was behind Rutledge had to drive into a ditch to avoid striking the other cars. That driver was not injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Judge’s son charged with domestic battery

Will County Sheriff’s police were called about 8 a.m. to the 900 block of Barber Lane, according to spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer. A 28-year-old wom-

Goode was arrested Monday afternoon at the Will County Courthouse on charges of domestic battery and unlawful restraint. His bond was set at $50,000 Tuesday. Spokesman Charles Pelkie said the Will County State’s Attorney’s office had requested a special prosecutor to handle the case.

OBITUARIES DON L. BIENIEK Born: Nov. 18, 1948 Died: Oct. 6, 2014 Don L. Bieniek, age 65, passed away Monday, October 6, 2014, at Lakewood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Don was born November 18, 1948, in Chicago and was a graduate of Lockport Township High School.

He worked for Eco-Lab in Joliet for many years. His late wife was the love of his life and they shared many memories traveling, enjoying baseball games and NASCAR, and spending time with their daughters and grandchildren.

Loving father of Jennifer (Kerry) Ewald of Plainfield and the late Debra Bieniek (1997); and the proud and devoted grandpa of Corinne and Kayla.

Seldes also acted in film, in “Mona Lisa Smile” and “Celebrity.” On TV she appeared in “Nurse Jackie” and played Candice Bergen’s aunt in “Murphy Brown” and Mr. Big’s mother in “Sex and the City.” She also wrote two books: a memoir, “The Bright Lights: A Theater Life,” and a

novel, “Time Together.”

Her other Broadway credits include “Crime and Punishment,” “The Chalk Garden,” “The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore,” Oliver Hailey’s “Father’s Day,” for which she won a Drama Desk Award, Arnold Wesker’s “The Merchant” and Kanin’s “A Gift of Time.”

In 1995, she was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame, marking 50 years in the profession, but she missed the ceremony because – typically – she was on tour with “Three Tall Women” in Los Angeles.

He was a member of Senior Club, Moose Lodge #300, Elks Lodge #296, and Monday euchre night. He volunteered many hours at Day Break Shelter. He was especially an avid fan of anything his grand and great-grandchildren

Hines VA hospital director to retire

CHICAGO – The director of a troubled Hines veterans hospital announced her retirement Tuesday, a move she and other hospital officials said was unrelated to the Veterans Affairs Department’s firing a day earlier of four senior executives after a nationwide scandal over long wait times for care.

In a news release, Joan Ricard said she would retire Oct. 31 as director of the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in order to spend more time with family.

“It has nothing to do with any of the recent events,” Hines spokesman Charity Hardison said of Ricard’s announcement.

“This is something she made a personal decision on. She hasn’t been pressured into leaving.”

But Illinois’ junior U.S. senator questioned the timing of Ricard’s retirement, as Hines has faced recent allegations of misconduct at the facility.

“In my discussions with the [Deputy VA] Secretary Sloan Gibson, it appeared to me that that her position was no longer tenable,” Mark Kirk, a Highland Park Republican said. “She probably realized before she’d get fired she should retire.”

2 nuns remembered after deaths in 11 vehicle traffic crash

EVERGREEN PARK – Two nuns who died in an 11-vehicle crash in Oak Lawn were remembered as women who wanted to care for the sick and suffering.

Sister Jean Stickney, 86, and Sister Kab Kyoung Kim, 48, both died at the scene of the Sunday crash in Oak Lawn, police said.

A third nun, Sister Sharon Ann Walsh, was injured along with

nearly two dozen others.

Also killed was 81-year-old Edward L. Carthans, 81, of Chicago, who was the driver of a westbound pickup truck that crashed into eastbound vehicles stopped at a traffic light, police said.

The sisters were with the Little Company of Mary Sisters and worked for Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, the Southtown Star reported.

Senator forms group to battle suburban heroin use

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk has launched a task force he said will tackle surging incidents of heroin abuse in suburban Chicago.

Joining the Illinois Republican in launching the Suburban Anti-Heroin Task Force on Monday were Lake County State’s

By BARRY HATTON and CIARAN GILES The Associated Press MADRID – Health officials scrambled Tuesday to figure out how West Africa’s Ebola outbreak got past Europe’s defenses, quarantining four people at a Madrid hospital where a Spanish nursing assistant became infected. Determined to contain the spread of the deadly virus, they even announced plans to euthanize the woman’s pet dog.

The first case of Ebola transmitted outside Africa, where a months-long outbreak has killed more than 3,400 people, is raising questions about how prepared wealthier countries really are.

For Europeans, a distant problem has arrived on their doorstep, and as Spanish health workers complain about inadequate equipment and poor training, the all-im-

portant tourism industry was showing its anxiety.

Medical officials in the United States, meanwhile, are retraining hospital staff and fine-tuning infection control procedures after the mishandling of a critically ill Liberian man in Texas, where he could have exposed many others to the virus after being sent away by a hospital.

The nursing assistant in Madrid was part of a special team caring for a Spanish priest who died of Ebola last month after being evacuated from Sierra Leone. The nursing assistant wore a hazmat suit both times she entered his room, officials said, and no records point to any accidental exposure to the virus, which spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of a sickened person.

The woman, who had been on vacation in the Madrid area after treating the priest, was

diagnosed with Ebola on Monday after coming down with a fever, and was said to be stable Tuesday. Her husband also was hospitalized as a precaution.

Madrid’s regional government even got a court order to euthanize and incinerate their pet, “Excalibur,” against the couple’s objections. The government said available scientific knowledge suggests a risk that the mixed-breed dog could transmit the virus to humans, and promised to use “biosecurity” measures to prevent any such transmission.

Spanish authorities also were tracking down all the woman’s contacts, and put more than 50 other people under observation, including her relatives and fellow health care workers. “The priority now is to establish that there is no risk to anybody else,” emergency coordinator Fernando Simon said.

Remembering mom VIEWS Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – I stood alone at my mother’s grave last week, talking.

I told her how my oldest daughter, Grace, is going out for basketball this year. How my middle daughter, Anna, looks more and more like her every day.

And I told her how our youngest daughter, Caitlin, is as ornery as ever.

I do remember how she loved to hold those girls.

I can still hear her voice singing “Happy Birthday,” and my daughters’ delighted smiles as they began their special days with their grandmother’s voice coming across the phone line.

Now, my 3-year-old, Caitlin, says she doesn’t remember Grandma.

It makes me sad.

We try hard to keep Grandma’s memory alive. But a year is a long time when you are 3 years old.

I remember my mother’s kind blue eyes, her ready smile, her devotion to family, and her ability to listen and hear not only what you’ve said but also what was being thought.

Standing at her grave, I know my mother can’t hear my words.

After all, she’s not there.

I believe she is with Jesus.

But still, I find myself talking and laying flowers at her grave.

As I write this, I’m wearing a pink shirt in her honor.

To be honest, sometimes I think all of the October pink ribbons, shirts and merchandise trivialize just how pernicious breast cancer really is.

For my mother, it was a difficult 11-year battle.

The chemotherapy left her bald. Sores developed on her feet. The cancer sapped her energy. Nausea haunted her for years.

It was not an easy life. But it

was one she endured without complaining.

Some folks call that courage. I call it character.

That said, I want my mother’s legacy to live on.

One good thing about Breast Cancer Awareness Month is it gets us thinking about what we can do.

Here are some thoughts: • If you’re a woman, schedule your next mammogram today.

• Give a cancer patient the most important thing that you can: you. Cook a meal. Sit by a bedside. Comfort a family member.

• There are lots of charities that help folks with breast cancer. Please donate or volunteer.

Your help is needed.

Folks from my hometown of Galesburg, Illinois, did all of those things for my family. It was most appreciated.

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming.

When mom first received her terminal prognosis five years ago, the family was devastated.

Shortly after she was told the cancer was beyond cure, we had a birthday party for my eldest daughter.

Mom wept while she sang “Happy Birthday.” Dad’s voice cracked while saying grace.

My wife, Joan, thought of her mother, who died of breast cancer a few weeks before our wedding.

At times, during this long battle with cancer I was at a loss to know what to say to my mom.

The only thing that seemed just right was, “I love you.”

Despite her difficulties, Mom always had a smile for her family.

When folks ask what I remember most, that’s it.

I love you, Mom.

You can help in fight against breast cancer More than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and about 40,000 women will die from it in 2014, according to the American Cancer Society.

However, the death rates from breast cancer have been on the decline since 1989, according to the American Cancer Society, and the decrease is believed to stem, in part, from earlier detection through screenings.

And that’s where we all come in for this fight.

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in U.S. women.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

The best way for a woman to reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer remains early detection through regular self-examinations and scheduling annual mammograms after the age of 40.

Locally, medical providers such as Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, Silver Cross Hospital, and Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers offer multiple treatment options for residents facing breast cancer.

We all can do more to raise awareness besides wearing pink. Donate to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.

Volunteer at an event this month or at your local medical center. Do what you can in this all-important struggle to beat breast cancer.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Class 3A Joliet Township Regional boys golf tournament Tuesday afternoon at Inwood figured to be highly competitive, and it did not disappoint.

Nor did the big guns, Joliet senior Trent Wallace and the Providence team.

Wallace shot 32 on the back nine to finish at 2-under-par 69 and claim his first regional title after finishing second twice. Providence closed with a 299 total, topping second-place Lincoln-Way Central’s 312 score by 13 strokes.

Homewood-Flossmoor totaled 317 to grab the final team qualifying berth for next Monday’s sectional at Balmoral Woods in Crete. Lincoln-Way East was fourth with 321 and Joliet fifth with 322 in the 10team field.

“We knew there would be four or five schools fighting for the second spot,” East coach Ryan Pohlmann said.

“Providence was out of the equation. We didn’t quite get there, but we got four individuals out.”

The top 10 individuals not on advancing teams also qualified for the sectional. That group included East’s Lee Hill (78), Jake White (78), Victor Perez (81) and Jimmy Goich (84) along with Joliet’s Wallace, Mark Boykin (82) and Kyler O’Connell (84).

“We’re excited to have three guys advance,” Joliet coach Ed Larson said. “And what can you say about Trent [Wallace]? He’s a grinder.

When you think he’s out of a hole, he pulls out a miraculous shot.”

“I hit the ball well all day, but I hit the wrong club in the wind a couple times on the front,” Wallace said of his 3732 round. “I was smarter on the back, hit better shots.”

Wallace had two birdies and three bogeys on the front, with birdies on 10, 11 and 18 in a bogey-free back.

“It doesn’t happen very often,” McEneany said of his

leading the way for Providence. “We have a such a good group. Our chemistry is so good. It’s nice all the time to be able to have faith in your teammates.”

The scores overall probably were slightly higher than anticipated, but as Platt said, “Inwood is always scary. I grew up playing here. Kids come out here thinking it’s going to be easy. But between the wind and the tough pin placements and this being the regional, it wasn’t easy at all.

“Two of the kids whose scores we counted bogeyed No. 18 [generally considered one of the easiest holes]. That will give me something to talk about with the kids.”

In addition to Bolden’s 72, Lincoln-Way Central counted Scott Mueller’s 78, Peter Kolyvas’ 79 and Dylan Love’s 83. Bolden went 34-38. Mueller shot 37 and Kolyvas 38 on the

back.

“I have a buddy who texted me and called this the ‘regional of death,’ ” first-year Knights coach Dan Szablewski said. “Our mindset was to survive and advance. We knew we had to play real well, and it’s a testament to the boys.

“For us to get an 83 from Dylan Love in the fifth spot and a 79 from Peter [Kolyvas] in the sixth spot, that shows the depth of our team. And Anthony [Bolden] put the boys on his shoulders. This is his best round of the year, and it came when it mattered most.

That’s what you ask of your No. 1 man.”

Bolden said his score came from “not having trouble holewise. I probably shot better on the front because my short game was a little better than it was on the back.”

“It was kind of the story of our season where we’ve struggled to get a fourth score,” Hollingshaus said. “We definitely had an opportunity but it didn’t happen, we just came up short. I didn’t have my best stuff today, but I kept it togeth-

er. I had a rough stretch where was four-over for five holes in the middle of my round, but other than that, I played well.”

Lockport’s Trent, a senior, opened with a 36 and closed with a 39 after getting a double bogey on 17. Three of his Porters teammates, Matt Sheldon (83), Joe Tomczuk (84) and John Parker (85) will join him at the sectional.

“We all played pretty decent but so did the other teams, so we missed it,” Trent said. “I thought that I was hitting the ball pretty good and where I wanted to hit it, for the most part. But one bad hole, on 17, really messed me up. But it all came together for a decent score.”

Lockport senior Gehrig Hollatz, one of the favorites to win the regional and make a return trip to state, was unable to play.

But Porters coach Matt Eber preferred to look at the positives after sophomore Parker won a four-way playoff with a par to advance.

“We knew that it was a hard regional but we’re a good team and just didn’t shoot our best with the guys that were here,” Eber said. “But the guys played hard and the course was tough with a lot of wind. I was proud of the boys and they’ve given a good effort all year. Luke shot great and finishing second in this regional is a credit to him and his hard work.”

LOCKPORT – Isaiah Pina made history for Plainfield South’s boys golf team at Tuesday’s Class 3A Lockport Regional and now the senior hopes he can continue to rewrite the Cougars record book for another week.

Pina fired a 74 at Broken Arrow to become South’s first regional champion, finishing one stroke ahead of Lockport’s Luke Trent and Plainfield North’s Taylor Hollingshaus.

He’ll try to advance to state for the second straight year when he competes with nine other area individuals at Monday’s Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional at Prairie Bluff in Lockport.

Then he wouldn’t mind concluding his career as not only the first medalist for South, but also the initial state placewinner from any District 202 school.

“It was really exciting,” said Pina, who shot a 37 on each nine. “I’m not really sure about what to say right now, but I’m really proud. The conditions weren’t the easiest so I just tried to stay level-headed and put a few good shots together.

My game is coming around and I’m getting a little more confidence and hopefully I can keep it going.”

Cougars coach Tim Boe was proud to see his senior make history at the rugged regional, which featured five teams who had qualified for at least three straight sectionals.

“We’d never had a regional champion in boys golf, so this is a big deal,” Boe said. “And Isaiah is as deserving as any-

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – In 2007, Providence girls volleyball beat Joliet Catholic in a close threegame match. But in the next six seasons, the Angels came out on top every match against their East Suburban Catholic Conference rival.

On Tuesday, the Celtics fought their way to a 25-23, 22-25, 25-18 victory. But even though the teams battled for each point and brought a lot of energy, neither coach thought their team played to its full potential.

“We didn’t have our libero this evening because she’s out with a cold,” Providence coach Rachel Ellingson said. “It was a great effort for our kids to step in and play a different role than they’ve been used to. I do not

know if this was our best night.

Statistically, we had as many kills in the third game as we did in the first two put together.”

Providence’s Katie Cummings had 22 serve receive passes and 15 digs, an impressive feat for a defensive specialist stepping into a libero role.

Another defensive specialist, Brenna Harper, served three aces.

Junior setter Liza Ellingson helped lead the offense with 12 assists and setter/right-side hitter Rachel Alles dominated with 11 kills for the Celtics (179, 3-3).

Alles also started off the first game by serving four tough balls that kept Joliet Catholic (9-11, 2-3) out of its system. To her, it was easy to start off the game strong. Her team was determined to beat the Angels.

“JCA is our personal school

rivalry,” Alles said. “So as a team, we got pumped. We worked great as a team together today. We can’t do our jobs without a great pass, a great set and someone to put the ball away. Everyone incorporated our individual skills so we could win.”

Even though the Celtics started a little shaky offensively in the first game, their ball control looked solid throughout the match. The strongly hit, well-placed shots in the last two games and their touches on blocks throughout were impressive given their size.

“We work on control and placing the ball where it needs to be,” Alles said. “Not just swinging away to hit. We recognize that we’re not the tallest team. We don’t always get block kills, but little things like block touches helps the back

row out.”

The Angels also entered the game with a lot of energy, hoping to keep their winning streak alive. Mary Murphy ended the night with 15 kills and eight assists. Madeline Grimm contributed six kills, Megan Melone had 14 assists and Mallory Krzysciak added 13 digs.

Joliet Catholic proved again it can come from behind. Down four points most of the first game, JCA battled back to lose the game by only two points.

The Angels won the second by playing their game, but could not overcome the Celtics to win the match.

FOOD Celebrating Croatian cuisine Crest Hill cultural club prepares for annual Berba Grozda dinner

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Boris Mijatovic of Crest Hill chuckled as he recalled a patron’s reaction to the stuffed peppers the Croatian Cultural Club in Joliet served at last year’s Berba Grozda – or Grape Harvest – dinner.

“She said she [did not like] stuffed peppers,” Boris said, “but she liked ours.”

Boris and his wife, Lucy Mijatovic, will again coordinate the dinner scheduled for Saturday. Last year, the couple introduced the stuffed pepper alternative to the traditional cabbage roll dinner, as the club has a few members now with the skill for making them.

“So we went to stuffed peppers,” Lucy said. “Everyone really liked them.”

Accompanying the stuffed peppers will be burek (seasoned meat rolled up in dough), mashed potatoes, salad and dessert palacinke (a jam-stuffed crepe sprinkled with sugar).

The recipes are from Lucy’s family.

“It’s what we’ve done for generations,” Lucy said.

The grape harvest is an important time for Croatians, said Delores Pavich of Plainfield, a member of the Croatian Culture Club in Joliet. It is commemorated annually with a huge celebration, which includes food cooked by the Mijatovics and their volunteer team.

While members will not actually harvest grapes, the presence of grapes will symbolically acknowledge the harvest in the home country.

“We put bowls of grapes on the table that the people enjoy while waiting for their dinner,” Pavich said.

Begun in 1960 to perpetuate the Croatian heritage, as well as the heritages of its non-Croatian members, the Croatian Cultural Club serves some type of food most weeks of the year, Pavich said.

One dish the club used to prepare frequently, but now only offers at its Good Friday fish fry, is bakalar – a dried and salted codfish, said Marko Babic of Crest Hill, one of the club’s original members.

“The salt preserved it,” Babic said. “It was the people’s main diet when they were out to sea for months.”

Bakalar also appears in Italian cuisine, cooked in tomato sauce, Babic said. The Croatians prepare it differently.

“Ours is with olive oil, butter and a lot of garlic,” Jelinek said.

Not every Friday has a fish fry. Sometimes, the club hosts chicken or pork chop dinners, Pavich added. Twice a year, the club offers a steak fry, Gelinek added.

He’s very controlling and, in the past, when I have threatened to leave, he said he would kill himself. He is verbally and emotionally abusive.

I no longer love him and want a divorce, but I’m scared of what he’ll do if I ask for one. I don’t know what he is capable of. The stress has taken a toll on me. I’m depressed, angry and bitter. I wish the kids and I could simply disappear, but that’s not an option, nor healthy.

Is there an easy way to ask for a divorce, or somewhere I could turn for help? Is there financial help where someone could help pay for a divorce? – Wants to disappear

Dear Wants to disappear: There is no easy way to ask a spouse for a divorce, particularly one who is controlling and verbally abusive. If you are worried about him killing himself, please don’t. From your description, he is too selfish and self-centered ever to do that.

Because I know of no individuals or organizations that pay for people’s divorces, talk to your family and see if one or more of your close relatives is willing to help. Dear Abby: When I was 10, I faked an injury so I could quit playing soccer. I couldn’t articulate why the coach, who was clean-cut, friendly and fair, made me uneasy. After he died a few years ago, it came out that he had molested dozens of girls.

Over the subsequent 20 years, those same instincts have screamed at me three more times – and twice I was proven correct. The third man to set off this alarm is in my social circle, along with his wife. Several of the couples in our group are starting families.

I feel like I’m in a terrible position. Should I say something and risk destroying an innocent man’s reputation and the group dynamic, or remain silent and risk the kids being around a predator? I don’t have a shred of evidence, just a gut-punch feeling.

I never said anything about the prior abusers, but I don’t sleep well wondering if I should have – even if it was based solely on a sixth sense. What should I do? – Nose like a bloodhound Dear Nose: Child molesters belong to every race, both sexes, and come in various age ranges. The problem with criminals of every sort – child abusers and con men included – is they look like the rest of us.

I’m sorry you’re having sleep problems, but the solution to them is NOT to accuse someone about whom you have no proof.

To falsely accuse him could destroy both of you, and I don’t recommend it.
