Corner of Front and Division streets MOKENA – The arrival of the Rock Island Railroad in 1852 led to the plotting of the Village of Mokena in that year

The original plot included 13 lots on what now is Front Street from present Wolf Road to Mokena Street and six lots from Mokena Street to Division.

Looking west from the corner of Front and Division streets, the then photo from the early 1920s shows a view of downtown Mokena from a long-ago era.

The building on the right, on the northwest corner, once was a saloon owned by John Groth.

In 1921, Mokena brothers, Milton and Roy Kropp, started a hardware business that eventually moved into the former saloon building.

Over the years, the building also housed the village post office, a general store, a church and had apartments on the second floor.

Beginning in 1945, the nearly 120-year old structure was known to locals as Dunham’s Hardware Store.

In October, 1974, the business and building were destroyed by fire.

The now photograph shows a similar view of the north side of Front Street from the Division Street intersection.

Districts see post-boom enrollment declines

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Back when Will County’s population was booming, Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 had no choice but to build.

As headcount ballooned by the thousands, district officials built about two dozen schools in 18 years.

“We never expect to see those days again,” said Tom Hernandez, spokesman for Plainfield District 202, one of the top five school districts in the state in terms of enrollment.

“There was a period from 1997 to 2006 where we were growing by 2,500 kids a year. There are entire districts that don’t have 2,500 kids.”

In the past few years, once-booming school districts like Plainfield District 202 have scaled back expansion plans because of overall enrollment declines experienced in most of Will County’s 29 districts.

Elsewhere, such as in Channahon School District 17, officials have considered whether to close buildings to save on costs.

Preliminary enrollment figures show Plainfield’s District 202 will be down about 860 students for the 2014-15 school year, bringing the district’s tally to 27,700 students, Hernandez said. In scaling back its master plan, the district recently sold a plot of land to the YMCA that was originally slated for a future elementary school.

But that decline is a drop in the bucket compared to declines experienced in other districts in the region. Twenty of the county’s 29 districts experienced drops between the 200910 and 2013-14 academic years, with some officials projecting future declines and others anticipating that trend to turn around.

District 207-U, Union School District 81, and Elwood District 203, ranging from a 20 percent decline in Mokena to a 13.6 percent decline in Elwood.

However, enrollment declines eased a bit across the Will County region between the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years, according to the latest state board of education figures.

Joliet District 86 schools will see 160 fewer students this year, tallying in at 11,785 students. It signifies District 86’s first enrollment decline in eight years. But Sandra Zalewski, spokeswoman for the district, said that decrease is less than what was initially forecasted.

She said enrollment at Isaac Singleton Elementary School, the district’s newest school built in 2011, has increased from 493 upon opening to 616 students this year.

Laraway Community Consolidated School District 70, Joliet Township School District 204, Manhattan School District 114, Joliet Public Schools Dis-

trict 86 and Wilmington CUSD 209-U were the top gainers during the five-year period, according to state board of education figures.

Over that same time period, just nine of Will County’s 29 districts experienced enrollment increases between 2010 and 2014.

Predicting the future Factors such as new housing developments, birth rates and mobility are used to predict future student enrollment, said Shawn Walsh, regional superintendent for Will County. But it’s not always easy to predict what will happen from year to year, he said.

He pointed to Plainfield, which went from “3,000 to 30,000” in 20 years before the housing bubble burst in 2008.

“And now everything has sort of stabilized and reduced,” Walsh said. “I think if the market gets back up, obviously you’re going to see increases in certain areas where building is happening.”

Walsh attributes the decline

to families staying in the area after the kids have graduated and the lack of new homes being built.

During the boom years, Lincoln-Way Community High School District 21 went from one school to four. School officials cited population growth.

Despite enrollment declines in recent years, district officials point to mild growth experienced at three of its five feeder school districts, including Manhattan District 114, one of the region’s top gainers.

The district’s four high schools – Lincoln-Way East, North, Central and West – all have a “healthy population” ranging between about 1,300 to 2,100 students, Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley said.

“If you have those kind of numbers, there’s enough of a population where you can offer a nice scope of course offerings, from academic programs and career to extracurricular activities,” he said.

Tingley said the district’s enrollment projections predict

slight gains across all four high schools in the next few years.

Enrollment at Manhattan School District 114 increased 6 percent over a five-year period from 1,237 to 1,314. The gradeschool district’s superintendent, Russell Ragon, said he expects a smaller increase of 1.5 percent this year.

Still, Ragon said, he’s satisfied with the overall trend.

“In talking with parents who come in and transfer in, people are coming in from all over the county,” Ragon said.

“A lot of it has to do the fact people are coming from communities that are overcrowded and they don’t want to deal with the overpopulation.”

Hernandez said Plainfield District 202 predicts slow, steady growth in the next few years, with a net gain of 100 to 200 new students each year.

Districts statewide will report 2014-2015 fall enrollment numbers to the State Board of Education by Oct. 15. ISBE officials say they plan to release those counts near the start of the new year.

Will County office sees record number of job postings

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Workforce Services Division of Will County is seeing a record number of job openings.

“The number of postings on our job board have increased significantly in the last few months,” said Scott Kettman, business services/special projects supervisor for the division.

The numbers are post-recession highs. Kettman said the most recent postings are the highest he has seen since joining the Workforce Services

Division more than five years ago.

The numbers kept going up last week. The county issued an announcement Friday that postings reached a record 243, which represented 2,700 job openings, on Sept. 29. When Kettman checked the number of postings Friday, it had climbed to 266.

Before September, the highest number of postings was 145,

which indicates a surge in employment opportunities in the past month. Each posting can represent several and even up to 100 openings.

Kettman said the increase in part reflects a hike in seasonal employment.

“A lot of these jobs can lead to full-time employment,” he said. “We’re posting a lot of full-time jobs in manufacturing and health care. A lot of the

warehouse jobs are full time, as well.”

The Workforce Services Division is an office of Will County government that serves as a go-between for people looking for jobs and employers looking for workers. In addition to listing job openings, the division provides assistance to people in writing resumes, preparing for interviews and developing other skills that are helpful in

the job market.

The Workforce Services Division has an office at 214 N. Ottawa St. in downtown Joliet.

It also has a Mobile Workforce Center, a large mobile home equipped with computers to bring job services to people in various parts of the county.

Teenager allegedly stabbed

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – A man allegedly stabbed a teenager Sunday during an argument at McDonald’s.

The incident occurred about 6:48 p.m. in the 100 block of North Bolingbrook Drive, Lt. Mike Rompa said.

Rompa said a 26-year-old man was “harassing female patrons inside the restaurant” when a 17-year-old boy intervened. The confrontation turned physical and the teen suffered a wound that was not life-threatening to his upper arm, according to Rompa.

Officers who were responding to the disturbance found the man a short distance from the restaurant. Rompa said he also suffered “minor injuries from the altercation.”

Both the man and the teen were treated at a local hospital. No criminal charges had been filed as of 9 p.m. Sunday, but Rompa said the investigation is ongoing.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

The proposed amendment adds a new section to the Suffrage and Elections Article of the Illinois Constitution. The section would ensure no person could be denied the right to register to vote or cast a ballot based on his or her race, color, ethnicity, status as a member of a language minority, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or income. At the general election to be held on November 4, 2014, you will be called upon to decide whether the proposed amendment should become part of the Illinois Constitution.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution.

(c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE

Bill Flavin loved the game of life

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – In high school, Bill Flavin of Louisiana played football and basketball for Lockport Township High School. As a father, Bill provided backyard sports opportunities for his eight children. In the workplace, Bill played fair. In life, Bill modeled the highest degree of sportsmanship.

“Sports resonated with him,” said Tom Flavin of California, one of Bill’s sons. “He thought sports reflected life, some wins, some losses, not whether you won or lost but how you played the game.”

Bill taught those values to his children through sports.

He played football and softball with the kids.

Patty Flavin of Louisiana, one of Tom’s two daughters, said Bill also would stack snow around the perimeter of the yard and then spray the yard with water so the kids could ice skate on it.

Although Patty didn’t play football with her brothers, she did participate in the other sports, joyful to be included on a mostly male team.

“It gave me a tremendous sense of inner confidence and inner strength,” Patty said.

Tom added that he and his siblings also learned team work, as well as leadership and communication skills, all from playing sports with their father.

“He wanted us to do our best, be a member of the team and not break the rules,” Tom said.

Sports even led Bill to meet his wife, Marilyn. On a below-zero day on Jan. 1, 1944, Bill was hunting by the Kankakee River and Marilyn was ice skating, Tom said.

For 22 years, Bill worked for Blockson Chemical Company, which became Olin Company, in roles that included technical engineering and management, Tom said.

In 1972, Bill was transferred to Louisiana.

Three years later, Bill was again transferred, to New York. Somehow, Bill missed the plane that was to fly him to training. So he instead

took the next flight. That first flight – Eastern Air Lines Flight 66 – crashed on June 24, 1975. Bill took that as a sign to refuse the transfer and remain in Louisiana, Patty added.

So Bill instead opened Flavin Reality and worked there 38 years, until a month before his death on Sept. 21 at age 85, Patty said. Again, Bill’s sporting principles reigned.

Patty said at the first Realtors meeting her father attended after earning his license, the other members shunned him. That only made Bill more determined to become an active member, she added.

“He said he was never going to allow people to be

treated like that again,” Patty said.

No, Bill preferred to build close teams of people, even large groups of people, his reason for hosting an annual St. Patrick’s Day party of 1,500 invited guests. The party was so successful, Patty said, it even had corporate sponsors.

“They had a band that played, great decorations and a lot of food – Irish food, but also Louisiana cuisine, with green tobacco as a twist,” Patty said. “It was quite the celebration.”

Cancer survivor skydive wish finally comes true Kyle Koetz of Joliet had the time of his life a week ago Saturday. The cancer survivor, who is still undergoing chemotherapy, jumped from an airplane.

“It was awesome,” he said.

“It was the best thing I ever did and everything I expected it to be.”

Koetz was diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago. His wish to skydive was granted

by Shorewood HUGS (Helping You Get Started), an organization that grants wishes to people going through a rough time.

Koetz wasn’t able to utilize his wish immediately; he was on a health roller coaster from the chemotherapy and radiation. The cancer was in remission for a time, but it has since returned and has gone to his spine and lower back.

Even though he’s undergoing treatment again, he wasn’t about to let it stop him this time around.

“I was not coming down in that plane,” he said.

Sept. 27 was the perfect day

The jump through Skydive Chicago was scheduled to take place in Ottawa. But because of airport problems due to the fire at the air traffic control facility in Aurora, the jump was moved to DeKalb.

Koetz could have rescheduled, but that was not going to happen, he said.

Skydive Chicago had a makeshift tent set up to greet the divers. Koetz was a tad nervous because of the change, but he wasn’t changing his mind.

The day also happened to be his son Zachary’s birthday, and he joined his dad for the dive.

At 13,500 feet, Zachary jumped third and Kyle jumped last, each with an instructor strapped to their backs. For

the first 60 seconds, it was all free fall.

Koetz was enjoying it so much, he forgot to pull the parachute cord at 5,000 feet, so the instructor had to do it.

“Then it was so quiet and peaceful,” Koetz said. “You see everything. You are just floating. You can talk to each other it’s so quiet.”

The landing was a piece of cake. Koetz has landed harder sitting down on a couch.

The day couldn’t have been more perfect, but it was. Kyle and his family went out to dinner after the jump and got to meet and get photos with Steve-O, the famous comedian, actor and stunt performer from the series “Jackass.”

“It was a great day for the both of us. I got to do something with him [Zachary] and it was on his birthday,” Koetz said.

“I can’t thank HUGS enough for doing this. HUGS is a great organization, and Heidi [Serena, HUGS co-founder] is amazing.”

ELAINE L. NICKEL Elaine L. “E” Nickel nee Tintera, age 83, late of Lockport passed away peacefully Friday, October 3, 2014, surrounded by her family.

Born in Chicago, living in the Lockport and Homer Glen area since the 1950’s. Life member of Lemont VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Elaine loved planting flowers, baking, watching

and feeding the birds but most of all cherished spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Preceded in death by her husband, Richard Nickel (2005); parents, Albert and Lillian (Dvorak); grandson, Dustin Nickel; and daughter-in-law, Karen Nickel.

Survived by her loving children, Michael, Susan, Mark, Sandra (Larry) Fessler, Pete (Sandy) and Carl (Carla) Nickel. 16 grandchildren, Rich, Bob, Angela, Dan, Amber, Amanda, Amy, Crystal, April, Peter, Kim, Cathy, Trisha, Michelle, Christina and Cynthia; 25 cherished great grandchildren, MaKenna, Nathan, Abigail, Katie, Aiden, Payton, Caleb, Autumn, Paisley, Emily, Hailey, Kaylee, Logan, Jayden, Riley, Hunter, Henry, Bridget, Dylan, Kylee, Troy, Sara, Robin, Timothy, Kenneth and one on the way; one sister, Judy (Roger) Roos; and her faithful pets, Bubba and Pepe. Numerous nephews, nieces and many friends also survive.

Paul Revere of Raiders rock band dies at 76

By DERRIK J. LANG The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Paul Revere, the organist and leader of the Raiders rock band, has died. He was 76.

Roger Hart, manager for Paul Revere and the Raiders, said he died Saturday at his home in Garden Valley, Idaho, from cancer. Revere was born in Harvard, Nebraska, Hart said.

“He’d been quiet about it for some time,” Hart said.

“Treated at the Mayo Clinic, Paul stayed on the road as long as he could, then retired recently back to Idaho, where he and his wife, Sydney, always kept a home.”

Dick, became known as “the madman of rock and roll” for his theatrical colonial wardrobe and infectious onstage persona with the band.

“From Day 1, we’ve always been a party band that accidentally had some hit records and accidentally got on a hit TV series,” Revere told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview.

The group became popular in 1963 with its rendition of Richard Berry’s “Louie, Louie” before releasing its own hits, such as “Kicks,” “Hungry” and “Good Thing.” The band’s biggest smash came in 1971 with “Indian Reservation.”

Paul Revere and the Raiders served as the house band

for the Dick Clark TV show “Where the Action Is” and made an appearance as themselves in the “Batman” TV series starring Adam West.

While the band’s lineup changed over the past 50 years, Revere remained a constant presence with the group and he continued touring until earlier this year.

“I don’t want to get into the details but let’s just say, it ain’t fun,” Revere wrote last year of his battle with cancer. “It’s been rough getting through the last few shows, but I would do whatever it takes to avoid missing a show.

I’m giving it my all, and then some, and the band tells me I’ve been even more awesome than usual.”

Edwin Francis Juban (Dziuban), born December 7, 1917, passed away peacefully October 3, 2014. Born in Joliet, resided in Lockport for the past 62 years.

A very proud Veteran of WWII, Staff Sargent United States Army Company E. 160th Infantry 40th Division, serving in the Asiatic and Pacific Theatre where he earned many commendations including two Bronze Stars.

Employed by United States Steel for 35 years in Joliet. He was the Secretary Treasurer for the International Guard Union of America Local #40, 25 year Department Plant Guard.

Member of Stone City VFW post # 2199, Steel Workers of America Retirees and Holy Name Society St. Joseph Church, Lockport. He was much honored to be the Legacy recipient from St. Joseph School in 2013.

Wide gap on the issues in Illinois’ U.S. Senate race

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s more than three decades in Washington have helped him become one of the most powerful Democrats on Capitol Hill – a position he says has helped him reap billions of dollars of federal funds and other valuable benefits for Illinois.

His Republican challenger, state Sen. Jim Oberweis, a dairy owner and investment manager, said Durbin’s lengthy tenure also makes him a “career politician” who’s out-of-touch with voters and clueless about how to create jobs in the private sector.

As the two face off in the Nov. 4 midterm election, Oberweis acknowledges it will take a significant Republican tide for him to unseat the Senate’s second-ranking Democrat. But he says he has the background to help create much-needed jobs in Illinois.

“We need to move in a different direction,” Oberweis told The Associated Press.

Durbin, who’s seeking his fourth U.S. Senate term, said he wants to continue working to “lift up” the middle class. “There is more to be done,” he said.

State buys land adjacent to state parks

Chicago.

A Saturday statement says the money will help rehabilitate an old police department building in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood and construct an expanded shelter space.

The total cost of construction for the WINGS Metro shelter is $6 million. The city of Chicago donated the site and it’s kicking in $1.8 million for both construction and project operations over two years.

The shelter is a collaborative between WINGS, Metropolitan Family Services and the Greater Southwest Development Corporation. WINGS also will offer on-site services, including safe housing, case management and youth development.

High jump

OGLESBY – The state of Illinois has acquired 51 acres of land adjacent to Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby to provide more space for wildlife.

In a news release, Gov. Pat Quinn’s office announced that wildlife habitat land also had been acquired in Edgar, Woodford and Jackson counties.

In the release, Quinn’s office says the state bought the land next to Starved Rock with Open Land Trust funds from a private estate for the appraised value of $900,000.

Quinn’s office also announced more than $6.5 million in improvement projects in state parks around the state, including projects in Cook, DeKalb, Grundy, Jersey, Kankakee, LaSalle and Winnebago counties.

Madigan’s office warns of phone scam

CHICAGO – The Illinois Attorney General’s office is asking residents to be on the lookout for a phone scam in which callers posing as government officials attempt to get people to send money by claiming they are under criminal investigation or owe unpaid taxes to the Internal Revenue Service.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office issued a news release on the scam in late August but now the office says it has seen

an uptick in the number of calls in the last few weeks.

Often the scam artists “spoof” caller ID devices into showing they’re calling from government agencies or from the Washington, D.C., area code of 202.

EAST ST. LOUIS – Federal officials say a 54-year-old Cahokia woman has been sentenced to three months in prison and paying back more than $70,000 she’s accused of stealing in pension benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mary Lee Owns must also serve three years of supervised release after prison.

Prosecutors say she received $70,260 from November through April of last year. She pleaded guilty in June to theft of government funds.

Two run away with best-back honors in overtime in Week 5. Hoosman, of course, played a key role that night for the Tigers.

“Last week, we had a good win over our big rival, Plainfield East,” Hoosman said. “But we had to forget about that and concentrate on this game. We’re taking it one week at a time.”

North (4-2) and East (5-1) both are likely to make the playoffs, and both will be in Class 7A. You never know how it might play out, but wouldn’t it be special if those two met again – if Hoosman and Mayon were on the same field in a playoff atmosphere?

VIEWS Dick Goss One reason I was looking forward to covering high school football over the weekend was it offered my first opportunity this season to see two of the best running backs in our area.

After watching Jake Mayon and Plainfield East beat Minooka, 25-6, Friday night, I thought, “I just saw the best back in the area.”

Then came Saturday afternoon, the traditional Plainfield Central homecoming game against Plainfield North. The Tigers’ Quintin Hoosman was every bit what he was billed. Following North’s 47-15 victory, I thought, “I just saw the best back in the area.”

Plainfield East coach Mike Romeli said college recruiters have told him Mayon is the best back they have seen in the state. Romeli said nobody outworks Mayon. The only knock on him is his height.

He’s 5-8, 192 pounds.

Among his assets is the ability to break tackles. A Minooka defender had a clean shot at him after he caught a pass in the flat and the defender appeared to have him wrapped up. But Mayon, who is nearing 1,000 yards rushing for the season, bounced off, did not go down and raced to the end zone to complete a 43yard scoring play.

“That’s my goal, to break tackles,” Mayon said matter-of-factly. “Always make the first guy miss and keep moving my feet.”

Another asset Mayon possesses is the ability to see the field and know when to use his uncanny cutback ability.

His 24- and 17-yard touchdown runs Friday featured the cutback.

If you’re a follower of local football, don’t you wish you could be in multiple places at once every Friday night and Saturday afternoon?

One thing that happened over the weekend was a few of our top-ranked teams lost on the road to tough opponents. Providence (5-1), which fell, 10-7, at Loyola, and Lincoln-Way West (5-1), a 17-6 loser at Bradley, dropped from the unbeaten ranks.

Lincoln-Way Central (4-2) suffered a 30-27 loss at unbeaten Lincoln-Way North.

In each case, the outcome was not a surprise. All three games projected as ones that could have gone either way.

All three of our teams come out of the weekend just as good as they were, or perhaps even better for the experience.

They now may be all the more prepared to tackle the postseason.

Conference championships are great. But there’s no doubt every quality team in the state wants to be ready to take its best shot come playoff time, and we have more than our share that fall into that category.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Brian Hoyer threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin with 1:09 left, and the Browns rallied from a 25-point deficit in beating the Tennessee Titans 29-28 Sunday for the biggest comeback in franchise history.

The Browns (2-2) had never rallied from more than 20 points, and easily topped the comeback on Dec. 4, 1966, when Cleveland trailed the Giants 3414 and won 49-40, according to STATS. It was the biggest road comeback in NFL history.

They couldn’t have made it tougher on themselves as they fell behind 28-3 in the first half.

They snapped a seven-game road skid scoring 26 unanswered points, including 16 in the fourth quarter.

Bears’ defense plays well enough to win

By ADAM L. JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Defensive end Willie Young had just made quick work of two Carolina Panthers linemen, sacked quarterback Cam Newton and forced a lively fumble.

He was thinking scoop and score.

“Oh, I tried,” Young said. “I got [popped] by the little [running back Darrin Reaves], man. He came in and thugged me up pretty good.”

The ball was recovered by fellow end Lamarr Houston, but Young’s play underscored a productive day by a beleaguered defense. The defense played well enough to win Sunday in a disheartening 3124 loss against the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

The Bears’ offense did not.

In fact, it’s difficult envisioning what the Bears’ oftpraised offense would have been Sunday were it not for

the defense.

Nickel back Isaiah Frey’s forced fumble and recovery at the Panthers’ 28 turned into seven points. Young’s sack and strip turned into a Bears possession at the Carolina 13 and seven points.

Even the Bears’ maddening drive late in the second quarter full of missed chances and capped by kicker Robbie Gould’s missed 35yard field goal was preceded by linebacker Lance Briggs’ interception.

The defense, a veteranladen, injury-plagued group that has been ripped endlessly, wasn’t on the field when newcomer Teddy Williams’ blundering hit turned into wild 79-yard punt return touchdown.

The Bears’ offense only scored three points in the second half.

Yet, the Bears’ defense lamented the 10 points it allowed in the final 4:29, regardless if it was the offense that

unspeakably turned the ball over twice to put them in precarious spots.

“We’ve got to get more takeaways,” defensive end Jared Allen said.

“We’ve got to finish,” linebacker Jon Bostic said.

“We needed to make some more plays,” Frey added.

No, the offense had to finish and make more plays.

After getting torn apart by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the defense had three takeaways, two sacks and seven pass breakups, which included consecutive tipped passes by rookie tackle Ego Ferguson. Newton had a 69.7 passer rating in the first half.

Now, Newton isn’t Rodgers. But the defense, which lost starters Chris Conte (concussion) and Jon Bostic (linebacker), still held the Panthers to a season-best 321 total net yards and forced five punts, including three consecutive in the fourth quarter

when the Bears led, 24-21. The defense opened the door, but the offense shut it.

“We were feeling really good,” Houston said. “We were getting stops and getting turnovers and getting them out on third downs.”

The most troubling aspect is that the offense seems to becoming fully reliant on a defense that hasn’t proven to be reliable. Five of the Bears’ 13 touchdowns on offense have come after defensive takeaways.

Defensive players thought the Panthers, notably Newton, adjusted well in the second half, whether it was quicker throws or more play action.

Their effort may have been solid, but it still was a losing one.

“We’ve got a bad taste in our mouth right now,” Young said. “When you’re up by that many points and you can’t find a way to seal the deal, it hurts.”

The pitch left to Forte usually works, but we’re left wondering what would have happened if Jermon Bushrod was playing. It was third-and-2 late in the third quarter at the Panthers’ 26-yard line, and Thomas Davis stopped Forte for a loss of one yard. The Bears settled for a field goal, their only points of the second half.

The scrappy team with the quirky manager, popgun offense, dynamic defense and lights-out bullpen will open the AL Championship Series against the Orioles beginning Friday night in Baltimore. Kansas City went 4-3 against the O’s this year. The Angels, 98-64 in the regular season, became the second team in the divisional era that began in 1969 to have the best record in the majors and get swept out of the playoffs. In no small coincidence, the Royals dealt the same humiliating fate to the New York Yankees in the 1980 ALCS.

Joey Logano wins at Kansas to advance THE ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Joey Logano grabbed the first berth into the next round of NASCAR’s championship race with a victory Sunday at Kansas Speedway.

Logano’s win advanced him into the third round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, which begins after stops at Charlotte and Talladega. Four drivers will be cut from the 12-driver field after Talladega.

“Getting us to the next round, that’s awesome,” Logano said. “This is so much fun, I’m having a blast this year, and we’ve got a real shot to win this championship.

I feel like we’re one of the teams to beat.”

Texas Ebola case gives Perry real-time test in leadership

By WILL WEISSERT The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas – The first diagnosed case of Ebola in the United States, and the revelation that dozens of others in Texas are now being monitored, is a potential health crisis that gives GOP Gov. Rick Perry another real-time leadership test and a chance to look presidential – or ineffective – on a national stage.

The once and possibly future White House candidate has seized on similar opportunities before. He deployed 1,000 National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border this summer after assailing what he called the Obama administration’s inaction amid a surge of unaccompanied immigrant children pouring into U.S. territory. Perry also helped lead emergency response efforts during a series of hurricanes that have hit Texas since he took office in December 2000, and he threw open Texas’ doors to refugees in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“There have been many times in his 14 years – given floods, wildfires, hurricanes

and now with this health crisis – where he’s had a chance to learn what works,” said Robert Eckels, a former Harris County judge who worked with Perry to bring hundreds of thousands of Katrina evacuees to Texas in 2005. “No matter where he goes next, he will take that with him.”

Perry has been trying to rehabilitate his political reputation since his 2011 “oops moment” during a nationally televised presidential debate.

Wearing professorial spectacles, he’s been studying with policy experts and traveling extensively, trying to show would-be GOP primary voters that he’s wiser, humbler and more seasoned.

He nailed the part as a calming presence during a Wednesday news conference on the Ebola diagnosis in Dallas, saying, “Rest assured, our system is working as it should.” But the same event later got dicey, when Dallas hospital officials standing next to Perry acknowledged that they initially had sent patient Thomas Eric Duncan home with antibiotics, even though he reported that he had recently been in Liberia.

It underscored how precarious this potential opportunity is for Perry. Just as the Ebola case could boost him nationally if things go right, it could make him look weak if the virus spreads. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a potential 2016 rival of Perry’s, and other Republicans already have begun criticizing the federal government for downplaying the Ebola threat – and Perry has potentially opened himself to similar attacks.

In an appearance on Fox News, Perry said, “This isn’t an outbreak – it’s one case,” and he praised the Centers for Disease Control for being a “very willing participant and partner in this.”

“Right now, Perry’s saying and doing the right things,” said Republican strategist Ford O’Connell.

High court’s new term has expectations on gay unions

By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A Supreme Court term that is starting with a lack of headline-grabbing cases may end with a blockbuster that helps define the legacy of the court under Chief Justice John Roberts.

While same-sex marriage is not yet on their agenda, the justices appear likely to take on the issue and decide once and for all whether gay and lesbian couples have a constitutional right to marry.

When the justices formally open their new term Monday, Roberts will be beginning his 10th year at the head of the court, and the fifth with the same lineup of justices. He has been part of a five-justice conservative majority that has rolled back campaign finance limits, upheld abortion restrictions and generally been skeptical of the consideration

of race in public life.

But his court has taken a different path in cases involving gay and lesbian Americans, despite his opposition most of the time.

The court’s record on gay rights is comparable to its embrace of civil rights for African-Americans in the 1950s and 1960s under Chief Justice Earl Warren, said University of Chicago law professor David Strauss. “The court will go down in history as one that was on the frontiers of establishing rights for gays and lesbians,” Strauss said.

The justices passed up their first opportunity last week to add gay marriage cases to their calendar. But they will have several more chances in the coming weeks to accept appeals from officials in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin who are trying to preserve their state bans on same-sex marriage.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Americans lack confidence in the government’s ability to protect their personal safety and economic security, a sign that their widespread unease about the state of the nation extends far beyond politics, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll.

With Election Day about a month away, more than half those in the survey said Washington can do little to effectively lessen threats such as climate change, mass shootings, racial tensions, economic uncertainty and an unstable job market.

“I think what we’ve got going on here in America is the perfect storm of not good things,” said Joe Teasdale, 59, who lives in southwest Wisconsin and works as an assistant engineer at a casino.

For many of those questioned in the poll, conducted before doctors in Texas diagnosed a Liberian man with the Ebola virus, the concern starts with the economy.

The poll found that nine in 10 of those most likely to vote in the Nov. 4 election call the economy an extremely or very important issue. Teasdale is among those who said the slow recovery from the recession is a top concern.

BEIRUT – Islamic State militants on Sunday shelled a beleaguered Syrian Kurdish town near the border with Turkey, sending smoke billowing into the sky as Kurdish militiamen scrambled to repel the extremists’ offensive, activists said.

The Islamic State group has pushed to the outskirts of the town of Kobani, also known as Ayn Arab, as it presses its weeks-long offensive against the town and its surrounding villages.

The assault has forced some 160,000 people to flee across the frontier in one of the biggest single exoduses of Syria’s civil war.

The Islamic State group has continued to advance despite airstrikes against its fighters by the U.S. and its Arab allies.

Overnight, coalition strikes targeted militant positions around Kobani, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group.

The U.S. military said fighter aircraft conducted two strikes northwest of the city of Raqqa, hitting a large Islamic State group unit and destroying six militant firing positions. The statement did not specify the location, but Kobani is northwest of Raqqa.

By ELAINE KURTENBACH and WENDY TANG The Associated Press HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists agreed Sunday to remove some barriers blocking roads and sidewalks ahead of the government’s deadline to scale back their protests. But the demonstrators appeared to be divided, and others refused to budge, with only hours to go.

An alliance of students said it had tried but so far failed to reach agreement with officials on a plan to begin talks on their demands for wider political reforms.

The group vowed to continue protests until details of the talks might be worked out.

“If the government uses force to clear away protesters, there will be no room for dialogue,” Lester Shum, one of the group’s leaders, told reporters.

Earlier in the day, students occupying the area just outside city government headquarters agreed to remove some barricades blocking the building’s entrance, after the government said it would do whatever was necessary to ensure 3,000 civil servants would have full access to their offices on Monday.

al appeared to be part of a strategy to regroup in another part of town, as protesters were urged to shift from other areas to Hong Kong’s Admiralty shopping and business district, a central location near the government’s main offices that has served as an informal headquarters for the protests.

Alex Chow, another student leader, said he was not worried about the crowd dwindling as people prepared to return to work and school on Monday.

“Because people need rest, but they will come out again. It doesn’t mean the movement is diminishing.

Many people still support it,” Chow said.

Officials said they intended to have key streets open for schools and offices by Monday morning, but it was unclear whether they would act to clear the streets and other areas by force or just settle for a partial victory in clearing some roads. The government announced a reopening of schools and some roads but indicated some disruptions likely were to continue.

“To restore order, we are determined, and we are confident we have the capability to take any necessary action,” police spokesman Steve Hui said.

There are some deals that can be quite deceptive. The normal-looking bid or play is wrong, and the hard part is recognizing that and making the correct choice.

In this deal, for example, who should come out ahead in four clubs after West leads the diamond two?

South opened with a modern weak three clubs, holding only a six-card suit. After West’s clearcut takeout double, North should have bid four clubs immediately if willing to go that high over three diamonds.

South has seven potential losers: two spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club. He will have to establish dummy’s heart king and ruff some diamonds in the dummy.

At the table, South won with his diamond ace and led the heart queen. Now West found the only winning defense: He won and shifted to his low trump. He saw the need to try to reduce those ruffs in the shorter trump hand.

South won with dummy’s ace (finessing would not have helped), discarded a spade on the heart king, ruffed a heart in his hand, ruffed a diamond on the board, and called for a heart.

Now East undid his partner’s good work by ruffing. South overruffed, trumped another diamond, and discarded his last spade on the high heart eight. West had to ruff, but it cost his trump trick. If East had discarded on the fourth heart, he could have ruffed the fifth heart and the defenders would have taken one spade, one heart, one club and either one diamond or a second club.

In general on defense, do not waste a trump by ruffing a loser.

My husband has worked for a nonprofit for 14 years and will retire in a few months. There isn’t an appropriate site for a party at his work. I have suggested an open house at our home a couple of weeks after his retirement date. My daughter thinks her house would be better because we are not supposed to have it.

My son-in-law dislikes entertaining at home, so I know it would be stressful for them. If we have it at our house, we can encourage friends and co-workers to come over again and stay in touch. I love to entertain and would happily prepare the food and decorate. Am I on the right track, Abby?

DEAR ABBY: I am a male in the training department at my office. A lot of times, because the people I train are new hires, there are dress code violations from people who appear to be testing the limits. Most of the violations involve women who wear clothing that’s too revealing, in spite of the fact they receive a document at the start of training explaining what is and is not appropriate attire.

I feel uncomfortable addressing dress code issues with the opposite sex. I have always asked a female in the department to do it for me. My problem is, my manager has told me I need to be able to deal with issues like this if I want to move forward in my career.

My question to you and your readers is, as a woman, would you feel more uncomfortable with a male boss addressing a “too much cleavage” or “skirt too short” issue than you would with another female?
