Coleman Hardware Company – Morris The Coleman Hardware Company began as the Hall Furniture Company in 1867, shortly after the end of the Civil War. After a series of name changes, the company reorganized under the name of the Sherwood School Furniture Company in 1874.

The Sherwood Company would grow rapidly under the direction of F. T. June, and by 1875, would employ nearly 150 workers in the Morris area.

Within a year, a fire destroyed a portion of the plant and the financially troubled company sold out to the Ohio Butt Construction Company. Two years later, the Coleman Hardware Company was organized with J. C. Coleman, the former treasurer for Sherwood, serving as president.

Located at the south end of Nettle Street, along the east bank of Nettle Creek, the Coleman Hardware Company, shown in the then photograph, produced pulleys, castings, door hangings, locks, hinges, manholes, iron toys, heating stoves and other specialties.

In the early years, the business utilized the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Rock Island Railroad to unload raw materials and send products to regional distributors and markets worldwide.

By 1910, the foundry, with its sixty-foot smoke stack, employed nearly 300 specialized workers that honed their talents in the machine shop, molding department, shipping and warehousing department and the company office.

section dates from 1874, the south wing from 1877, and the west wing was constructed between 1895 and 1900.

Each of the three wings were built upon a limestone foundation and constructed with a one-story common bond brick structure with post and beam interior framing and topped by a gable roof.

According to Sanborn Fire Insurance maps of the era, the south wing is where the manufacturing took place, as it is often labeled as the “machine shop” or “factory.” The building had several bays that were used for various manufacturing jobs.

room” while the north portion was most likely used for polishing and plating. A 1927 Sanborn Fire Insurance map labels the spaces as a “stock room.”

The northern wing was used primarily for warehousing and shipping and the east end housed the company offices.

The floors throughout northern building were originally both pine planking and oak hardwood, while the floors in the factory wings were concrete.

To the west of the Coleman Building is an open field that once contained a large foundry, connected to the south wing, where it is believed that finishing took place.

While the Coleman Hardware Company prospered for many decades, the economic

depression of the 1930s took its toll on the company, and in March of 1933, Coleman Hardware suspended operations.

By1935, the company was sold along with the property.

Over the years, different companies operated out of the old hardware facility, including Gilchrist Fertilizer and Gates Manufacturing. In 2008, the building and property was purchased by Jim and Carol Baum, and renovated as the CanalPort Community Center.

In 1994, the old Coleman Hardware Company building was added to the National Register of Historic Places Today, the surviving remnants of the once large complex are still visible in the now photograph.

Coveted trophy makes grand entrance

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – The elder from the Lake Superior Chippewa tribe circled Lord Stanley’s Cup during the prized trophy’s opening ceremony Saturday night in Wilmington, a bundle of burning sage in one hand and a white feather in the other.

“There are many Native Americans who feel the Blackhawks … are derogatory toward Native American cultures,” G.B. Starr-Bresette from Elgin told a crowd of Chicago Blackhawks fans inside Wilmington High School.

“I know that the Blackhawks are not trying to be mascots.

In fact, they are doing our native people more honor.”

Applause followed, as the purifying sage smoke – known for healing powers in his Native American culture – dissolved into the air.

“It’s important to celebrate tradition, to celebrate ceremony,” he said.

While it wasn’t the typical opening ceremony for the prized Stanley Cup appearances in the U.S., it certainly was fitting.

Wilmington High School Superintendent Jay Plese said he invited Starr-Bresette to conduct the opening ceremony, with all proceeds from event ticket sales benefiting The Blackhawk Society, a newly created nonprofit that aims to promote a better world understanding of Native American culture through education.

Scott Sypolt, owner of Get Fit 24/7 who often works with the Blackhawks’ charitable foundations, said the nonprofit has created Native American curriculum that soon will be taught at the local high school.

“It will be the first high school in the state to adopt curriculum for Native Americans,” Sypolt said, recalling

D-210 officials determining scope of audits Interim business consultants slated to report at next board meeting

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 administrators are trying to figure out the scope of audits that board members have requested proposals for.

Ronald Sawin, assistant superintendent of business, said Lincoln-Way administrators will present several options for board members on forensic and external audits. District officials have not put out a Request For Proposal for those audits just yet, he said.

On Sept. 24, board members unanimously voted after closed session to pursue pro-

posals for those audits.

Board President Kevin Molloy, who supported the decision, said it was “always good to have another set of eyes.” But he also said the audits could be costly and didn’t think they were necessary.

Sawin said administrators are coming up with different time periods for the audits and what information they should gather for board members.

“For example, do they want someone to re-audit the financial statements or something more intensive?” he said.

He said he didn’t know when options would be presented to the board.

Thousands of Lincoln-Way

residents – including those associated with watchdog group Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite – have petitioned for a forensic audit. Board member Christopher McFadden recommended one as well in a memo where he criticized the district’s current auditors.

Mokena resident Norman Roney – who works for DePaul University on auditing issues – wrote in a letter to The Herald-News in support of a forensic audit and review of internal controls.

He wrote it’s not the job of auditors performing annual audits to catch fraud or mismanagement; mismanagement would have to be severe

to show in a report and fraud is only found “if it stumbled upon.”

“We are requesting an audit that is concerned with identifying weak management practices,” he wrote.

He also recommended a committee of taxpayers be included to make sure the scope of the audit is adequate.

Business consultant

Since Sept. 10, Lincoln-Way has been working with interim business manager Steven Langert, who’s been reviewing past audits, accounting practices and tracking expenses.

Sawin said what Langert has been doing is “more of a his-

torical analysis, more so than anything else.”

Langert, who reports to Superintendent Scott Tingley, previously worked for Orland Park-based District 230 and Plainfield School District 202.

According to his contract, he will work 100 days until June 30 for a total of $60,000.

“Obviously, our issues are financial. It makes sense to gain a different perspective or additional experience,” Tingley said.

He said Langert will share a report of his work at Thursday’s board meeting. The next meeting will take place at Lincoln-Way Central High School.

Inside the high school, fans were taking cellphone selfies and asking friends and family to snap shots of each other with the iconic Cup.

Matt Toftoy and his two young boys were speechless after getting a photo opportunity with the prized trophy.

“To be able to see a trophy that’s over 100 years old that’s

been passed on from generation … it’s incredible,” said Matt Toftoy of Newark still in awe and hardly able to express his excitement.

His 10-year-old son, Nathan, was equally speechless.

“It was ... it was amazing.

It’s the Stanley Cup. ... Wow,” he said.

Not far behind the Toftoy family were VIP ticket-holders Keith and Kyle Skoryi of Wilmington, who eagerly waited in line to get a photo opportunity with the Cup. “It’s on my bucket list,” Keith Skoryi said, tears in his eyes. “I’m going to cry.

D-202 board seeks fee limit increases, waivers Special meeting to be held Monday

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting Monday to vote on waiving a state physical education requirement and to raise the ceiling on fees for driver education.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the district administrative center, 15732 Howard St. Tom Hernandez, District 202 spokesman, said the two measures are common requests and the hearing is required by law.

“We’ve been doing this for years,” he said.

He said board members also will consider approving a request to the state to raise the ceiling on driver education fees up to $400. Hernandez said the fee will not be increased to $400

and the district charges $250 currently.

“On a per capita basis, it’s a fairly expensive program,” he said.

According to state fall and spring waiver reports between 2010 and 2014, District 202 has not made a request for driver fee education raises before.

Hernandez said the board also is seeking permission from the state to opt out of the law requiring physical education on a daily basis for students. He said Plainfield School District 202 does not have the room to meet the requirement.

Board members will consider approving an application for the waiver.

“Our [engineer and design team] felt confident that everything was up to snuff with the ADA,” Park District Board President Glen Marcum said Saturday. “After speaking with Pam, we decided it was best to take that extra step and make sure everything is up to snuff.”

Heavens said she is pleased the district’s board is taking that step. And she hoped Saturday’s event raised further awareness.

Among those in attendance Saturday was Mark Trieglaff, founder and president of the Wheaton-based Accessibility Consultation and Training Services.

Trieglaff said although the paved trail was in good condition, he made note of cracks in the pavement that potentially could throw someone with a disability off balance. Trieglaff and others also hit a snag at one point, unable to lift each wheelchair up without assistance onto a bridge that was slightly elevated along the trail.

As an ADA consultant, Trieglaff said he encourages clients – which range from private companies to local governments – to be proactive when redesigning outdoor recreational space, and to always keep people with disabilities in mind. “[Gathering input] from consumers can ensure those needs are being met,” Trieglaff said. “Accessibility and safety really go hand in hand.”

JOLIET – People with and without disabilities took a stroll Saturday through Pilcher Park as part of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living’s “Stroll ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ Survey Our Park” event.

About two dozen people traveled the pathway from the Bird Haven Greenhouse to Pilcher Park’s Nature Center.

Some capable of walking opted to use a wheelchair to understand what it’s like for a person with a disability to navigate the trails.

Pam Heavens, executive director for the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, said the event, which included written surveys for participants, was designed to gather public input about the Joliet Park District’s plans to redesign roads and trails within the park and how that could affect access for people with disabilities.

The event was a partnership between Heavens and Rita Rogan, a park user and former Section 504 accessibility coordinator for the state of Michigan.

Heavens and Rogan approached park district officials last month, raising the question of whether the conversion of the drivable main loop into a trail would unnecessarily limit people with disabilities from venturing into the heart of the forest.

The district’s board has since paused the $2.2 million project while it hires an accessibility consultant to review.

District 111 board discusses standardized tests

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka School District 111 School Board spent much of its Thursday night meeting discussing the ACT and PARCC, or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, achievement tests.

The school normally administers the ACT test annually, reimbursed by the state, but this year, according to Minooka Community High School Principal Ronald Kiesewetter, it’s unknown if the state will pay for the cost of the exams.

Because of the budget stalemate in the General Assembly and the governor’s office, the Illinois State Board of Education recently alerted school districts that the status of ACT reimbursement is uncertain.

“We will let everyone know as soon as we find out,” Kiesewetter said.

But until then, administrators are advising juniors and those who want to take the test for college admissions to register to take it at other locations.

A letter went out to parents

“Please understand that students are not required to register at this time to take the ACT on a national testing date. We do, however, want to make sure that students who need to take the ACT for college admissions purposes are in a position to do so regardless of whether or not we are able to offer the test at MCHS.” Ronald Kiesewetter Minooka Community High School principal Friday morning listing three local testing locations and dates, which include Dec. 12 and Feb. 6 at Joliet Junior College; and April 9 at JJC, Plainfield South High School and Joliet Catholic Academy.

There is a cost, however, to take the ACT outside MCHS. According to Kiesewetter, the test without the writing component costs $39.50, and the cost with the writing component costs $56.50.

“Please understand that students are not required to register at this time to take the ACT on a national testing date,” Kiesewetter wrote in the letter.

“We do, however, want to make sure that students who need to

take the ACT for college admissions purposes are in a position to do so regardless of whether or not we are able to offer the test at MCHS.” Kiesewetter advised students who want to register at the remote locations to do so as early as possible, as seating is limited at the testing venues.

MCHS will continue to offer students the Excel Edge ACT test preparation course this year, which begins in January.

The other standardized test discussed Thursday was the PARCC test. Even though many educators are not happy with the beleaguered exam, Kiesewetter said the district has decided to give it again

this spring. The principal said he would eventually like to administer it to the freshmen class.

During public comment at the meeting, MCHS parent and Minooka Grade School District 201 school board member Doug Martin told the board he considers the career guidance standardized tests the high school gives freshmen as “dangerous.”

“This is something I think is somewhat dangerous,” Martin said.

Martin said the test is a personality test based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test, which Martin said has been shown to be meaningless and

inconsistent. Once you tell a young, impressionable teenager what their personality type is, he said, they believe it.

“It sort of denigrates selfwill,” he said. “We should be trying to help students figure out what they’re interested in ... but we’re putting a label on them. ... This test is about as reliable as the zodiac.”

After the meeting, Kiesewetter said the school’s guidance counselors find the test’s results useful to begin conversations with students about their future goals.

“We use it as a resource to help them begin to think about their future fields of study,” he said.

different toppings, any way I wanted it, but that’s the way I like it. And to my surprise, it was without a doubt, the best Poorboy in town. Go ahead, do a road trip like I did, it was a lot of fun. But I’m telling you, it’s a waste of time, I’ve already done it, and Babe’s has the best Poorboy around.

I almost forgot to mention, I stopped in on a Friday and to my surprise all bottled and canned beers were only $1.00.

They said they have that special every Friday. So I sat there, enjoyed my Poorboy, an ice cold beer and watched the game on tv. I was tempted to play the video gaming but I ran out of time. Maybe next time, oh what the heck, I’ll be there next Friday.

Memorial bench dedicated in Minooka VIEWS Kris Stadalsky MINOOKA – This year’s annual community picnic in Minooka was a special one. It was the day the Minooka Lions Club and Mayor Pat Brennan dedicated a bench at Lions Park in memory of longtime village employee Robbie Tonarelli.

Tonarelli died suddenly in September 2014, just two days after his birthday. He was superintendent of public works and had worked for the village for 31 years.

His passing was a shock to everyone, and a sad reminder of how precious life and friends can be.

He always did whatever he could to answer questions and solve problems, no matter what or who he was dealing with. And he did so with a smile on his face.

“He was always very positive,” Lions Club member Al Skwarczynski said.

But more than being a village employee, Tonarelli did a

He was a Lions Club member for close to 30 years and was in charge of organizing the club’s food basket program to families in need for Thanksgiving and Easter.

Brennan made the presentation Sept. 20 to the public and Tonarelli’s family.

“He was Mr. Minooka,” Brennan said. “He knew where every pipe and cable was located. He knew every sidewalk that was cracked and road that needed repairs.”

During Minooka’s annual Summerfest, Tonarelli made sure all the necessities – like port-a-johns and lighting –

were there for the public.

Brennan also said Tonarelli taught him a lot when he first became mayor of Minooka.

“He came in every day and we would talk about what was going on in the village,” Brennan said. “I learned a lot from him. He was a great teacher.”

The bench was a joint effort

between the Lions Club and the village, Skwarczynski said.

The Lions wanted to do something to remember Tonarelli because he was such a great guy who did so much for the community and the Lions.

“He would step right up and do anything,” he said.

Denise Tonarelli said their family was pleased with the memorial bench dedicated to her husband. He always did so much for the village, she said.

“It’s a nice honor for him,” she said.

The bench, with the engraved memorial plaque, is in Lions Park under the trees facing the children’s playground.

The spot was selected especially for him – a place where he might have sat and relaxed, and watched the kids play.

“He loved this town. We wanted to let him know how much we loved him too,” Skwarczynski said. “[Now] there’s always a place to sit and remember him.”

Letting go of the past Hardworking Shorewood man learned to enjoy life dunland@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – “Be thankful you have food on your plate.”

That was Tom Putman’s mantra, according to his daughter, Ellen Mytnik of Shorewood, whenever she didn’t like certain food at dinnertime. Occasionally, Tom also shared a memory from his own childhood, when he and his family had nothing to eat except bread and water.

That was the most Ellen knew about Tom’s experiences during the Nazi invasion of Holland until Ellen was an adult. Tom expected adversity in life. He worked hard and provided well for his family, Ellen said. He was faithful.

So in 2009, after the death of his wife, Eleanor, Ellen moved Tom from their family home in Frankfort, where he had lived for 40 years, and into the Timbers of Shorewood, near her.

Ellen said she told her father, “Dad you have worked hard all your life. The time for doing for yourself is done.

It’s now time for you to enjoy life.”

Then Ellen looked after his personal care, medical care and finances. Tom learned to socialize. He played bags and dominoes. He bowled on a Wii bowling team and amassed trophies. He became resident’s council president. In 2011, he was crowned king of The Timbers’ senior prom.

Ellen marveled at the transformation in her stoic father.

“It was like the caterpillar layer was falling off so that the butterfly could finally emerge,” Ellen said. “He finally let the things of the past go and enjoyed life.”

Before Tom was born prematurely in 1928, his parents emigrated from Holland to the United States seeking a better life, Ellen said. When Tom was 2 years old, Tom’s family, which included his parents, his sister Ann and his unborn sister, Gerry, returned to Holland because his mother Mary was homesick, Ellen said.

Tom was 12 when the Nazis invaded Holland and ravaged everything. Ellen said Tom often had to hide in a dirt hole under his house to avoid recruitment.

At 14, Tom was delivering wood products on the back of his bicycle to help his family.

He also worked at a fish store; his pay was fish. His sisters went to live on farms, working for their food. His father was eventually sent to a concentration camp after he was caught walking the streets, searching for food.

“When he was captured by the Gestapo, my grandfather weighed 180 pounds,” Ellen said. “When he was released six months later, he had lost half his weight.”

The family returned to the United States after the war, when Tom was 19. He attended two years of trade school,

where he learned to read blueprints and then went to work for RR Donnelley, where he developed plates that went on the presses, Ellen said.

At 23, Tom was drafted.

He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Japan, Ellen said, where he worked with surveyors and engineers to help rebuild roads.

Tom later used his woodworking skills to build an addition to the family’s Frankfort home.

Nevertheless, for many years, Tom remained closelipped about his past. He never returned to Holland to visit family members until 1994.

Nor did Tom express much emotion. Ellen said she was 50 before her father ever told her, “I love you.”

“I think he had learned to pack away his feelings and not express himself because of everything he had to endure when he was raised in Holland,” Ellen said.

Ellen feels that Tom’s years at The Timbers of Shorewood before his death on Aug. 23 at the age of 86 were the happiest of his life. Sometimes, when Ellen visited Tom to count out his medication or wash his laundry, she said her father would say, “I appreciate what you’re doing, and I love you for it.”

OBITUARIES George W. and Edna Louise (Cole) Powell. Mary was raised and educated in Morris. She married Kenneth A. Halterman on February 29, 1948.

He preceded her in death on January 16, 2003.

She loved to crochet and knit and enjoyed babysitting for many families in Morris. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Federated Women’s Club and Caterpillar Machinist Retirement Club.

Born July 5, 1934, in Wilmington, IL to the late John and Bessie Mary (nee Morey) Tryner. Joseph graduated from Wilmington High School Class of 1952. He then graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1958. In 1958, he established his first solo practice in Joliet, IL In 1960, he moved his practice to Wilmington where it is known today as Tryner Law Firm. He was proud to have had his son John, join the firm in 1999. Joseph eventually retired in 2012 and his son continues his legacy at the firm.

Joseph was the City Attorney for Wilmington from 1969-1993. He served as alderman on the Wilmington City Council from 1995-1999. He also served as attorney for Wilmington Township, Braidwood, Diamond, Wilmington Fire Protection District, and Wilmington Park District.

He was a former director at the First National Bank in Wilmington for many years. Past president of the Wilmington Rotary and served on the board for Trinity Services Foundation. Member of the Island City Baptist Church in Wilmington and the Masonic Lodge #208 in Wilmington.

Other than enjoying his life as an attorney he loved to hunt with his father and his son, and he enjoyed photography.

Shirley loved life. She married the love of her life, George Connor, and had 50 wonderful years with him until the good Lord called him home.

From that union they were blessed with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and lifelong memories. Along with Shirley and George’s many travels, she enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society in Tarpon Springs, FL. Where there was a good Bingo game, Shirley could sometimes be found, winning! Dinners with the family and friends were the rule not the exception. The world came to a stop when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were around, because she loved above all else that precious time with them.

Born: May 1, 1920; in Aurora, IL Died: Sept. 29, 2015; in Tahlequah, OK Sterling Grant Wilkinson, age 95, passed away peacefully in Tahlequah, Oklahoma on September 29, 2015. He was born May 1, 1920, in Aurora, IL. Our country owes a debt of gratitude to Sterling and his fellow World War II veterans who fought so valiantly to protect our freedom. A paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, Sterling parachuted into the heat of some of the most famous and notorious battles of the war, including Normandy, Sicily, and Market Garden. Until the final days of his life, he told fascinating stories of the many battles he fought and survived.

After the war, Sterling lived in Plainfield, IL, raised his family and worked as a truck driver for his entire career. He was a proud Teamsters Union member. Shortly before he retired, he married Anne (Byrne) Meggesin in 1981. They moved to Arkansas where they built a homestead in the Ozarks outside of Fayetteville and raised cows, grew vegetables, and spent their evenings watching the sun set over the mountains. Years later they moved to Rogers, Arkansas and in 1998, to Go Ye Village, a retirement community in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. They also launched a handcrafted jewelry business and sold their wares at craft malls and fairs.

Sterling is preceded in death by wife, Anne; son, Sterling L. Wilkinson; and son-in-law, James Robinson.

He is survived by daughters, Carol (Warren) Morrow and Jean Jubinsville; stepchildren, Patricia Robinson, Arthur Grindstaff, Kathleen (James) Mathers, Nancy (Howard) Lemcke, John (Rebecca) Meggesin, and Laurie (David Duran) Meggesin; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Budget impasse cuts services for domestic abuse victims

CHICAGO – Assistance for battered women and children statewide is dwindling because of Illinois’ budget impasse, and it could have long-lasting consequences, according to state-funded organizations that help domestic violence victims.

A southern Illinois shelter offering protection to families in emergencies has closed its doors. The head of a Chicago group that provides counseling is working without pay, a strategy that directors at a Centralia organization have also used. Other nonprofits are laying off employees, blowing through reserves or borrowing money to keep up with rent, payroll and utilities as the state enters its fourth month without an approved spending plan.

For most nonprofit groups and agencies – the backbone of Illinois’ social services network– late payments for services and budget cuts have become business as usual. But veteran advocates say the pure uncertainty of the current situation is unprecedented, and hits rural areas particularly hard. There’s no sign that legislative Democrats and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner are close to a deal, and hardly anyone knows what a new budget would look like for the cash-strapped state.

“We’re just hanging on,” said Tolleyene Ray, a director of People Against Violent Environments in Centralia.

The southeastern Illinois organization, which offers front-line services like legal assistance for protective orders in five counties, shut its doors for two months. It was later paid for services provided last year and now operates on a limited basis to stretch dollars. Ray takes crisis hotline calls at home. Much of her time has been unpaid.

Attention to the budget’s ripple effects spiked Thursday with

rallies in Chicago and Springfield, where advocates called for a solution. Democrats want Rauner to sign off on tax increases, because the state is billions of dollars in debt, but Rauner first wants pro-business reforms.

In the meantime, Illinois is spending at unsustainable rates due to state statues and court orders, while a few areas, like domestic abuse services, remain in limbo without a budget.

As a result, A Safe Place, with facilities in Mundelein, Zion and Waukegan, has turned away those seeking emergency shelter. It can only afford to operate nine of its 35 beds and has scaled back on counseling that helps women in the far northeastern part of the state escape abuse.

Budget impasse affecting emergency call systems

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois residents seeking help through their local emergency 911 systems may be on their own if the budget fight between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats in the Legislature continues.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reported without a budget in place, emergency call systems are no longer receiving revenue from a tax on cell phone users.

Under state law, 911 fees for landline phones are paid to county-level systems. Fees for cell phones go into a statewide pool.

But Rauner said without a budget in place the money cannot be distributed.

“It’s hurting every 911 center,” said Connie Armstrong of the Woodford County 911 service.

“That’s money we use to pay our bills. We don’t know what we’re going to do.”

An Illinois House committee has passed a plan that would require the release of the funds for 911, emergency food assistance, mental health and other services during the state budget stalemate.

The House Executive Committee’s 7-0 vote Thursday sends the $3.8 billion spending plan to the full House. It’s not known when the House will vote.

The measure also provides $1

billion for lottery payouts. It has already passed the Senate.

Republican Rep. Michael Tryon of Crystal Lake has questioned passing the bill when the state lacks money to pay for it. Rauner has indicated he’ll veto it.

Nonprofit continues fight against Lucas Museum in Chicago

CHICAGO – A nonprofit group has filed an updated complaint in federal court as part of its efforts to keep filmmaker George Lucas from building a museum along Lake Michigan in Chicago.

Friends of the Parks’ filing Friday focuses on a ground lease agreement that the Chicago Park District has signed with the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the Chicago Tribune reported. The agreement gives the Lucas museum a 99-year lease on the lakefront property for $10. The group also reiterated its argument that the museum will ruin the character of the Lake Michigan shoreline.

“In particular, the ground lease agreement would authorize the construction of a museum that would preclude the use of the trust property as free and open space with access to the activities on Lake Michigan,” the filing stated.

Construction could begin as early as next spring and last until 2018 if plans for the museum pass the Chicago City Council and city Plan Commission. The site is south of Soldier Field and north of McCormick Place. The 17-acre site will erase parking lots and add 4.5 acres of new parkland and a 300,000-squarefoot museum.

A judge previously ordered the group to file an amended complaint because the museum recently released revised plans that include more green space and a scaled-back design.

The Chicago Park District now has the option to reply to Friends of the Parks’ filing. The next court date in the case in Nov. 10.

Scientists at Fermilab power up 17-ton magnet for experiment

BATAVIA – Scientists at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory in suburban Chicago have powered up a 17-ton

electromagnet, which will be the centerpiece of an experiment on subatomic particles.

The 52-foot-wide magnet arrived in Batavia two years ago after a 3,200-mile land and sea trip from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, where it was built for a similar experiment in the 1990s. It’s now in its own specially designed building at Fermilab.

Scientists at Fermilab cooled the magnet to minus 450 degrees last month and powered it up, The Aurora Beacon-News reported. It was a stressful moment because the magnet hasn’t been operated in such a long time and scientists couldn’t completely anticipate what would happen when it was cooled and turned on, project manager Chris Polly said.

“It was a huge relief to see it come back to life,” Polly said.

Fermilab officials plan to use the magnet in a physics experiment called Muon g-2, which will study the properties of muons, subatomic particles that live only 2.2 millionths of a second.

Polly said the next step is a process called “shimming” or to have a team of 12 people move pieces of metal in and out along the magnet to create a uniform magnetic field. It should take six to nine months.

That’s necessary before muons can be brought to the magnet, Polly said. The target date for that is March 2017, followed by another six months to collect the first data and another six months to analyze it.

“You have to be very patient in particle physics,” Polly said.

University of Illinois donations dip, but still top $250M

URBANA – Donations coming in to the University of Illinois dipped slightly in fiscal 2015, but still totaled more than $250 million.

According to the UI Foundation, cash gifts, pledge payments, annuities and estate distributions totaled $251.5 million.

The figures for the fiscal year that ended June 30 were released Friday night.

The previous year’s total was $259.5 million.

Historic South Carolina floods: Heavy rain, hundreds rescued

By SEANNA ADCOX and JEFFREY COLLINS The Associated Press COLUMBIA, S.C. – Hundreds were rescued from fast-moving floodwaters Sunday in South Carolina as days of driving rain hit a dangerous crescendo that buckled buildings and roads, closed a major East Coast interstate route and threatened the drinking water supply for the capital city.

The powerful rainstorm dumped more than a foot of rain overnight on Columbia, swamping hundreds of businesses and homes. Emergency workers waded into waist-deep water to help people trapped in cars, dozens of boats fanned out to rescue people in flooded neighborhoods and some were plucked from rooftops by helicopters.

Officials said it could take weeks or even months to assess every road and bridge that’s been closed around the state. Several interstates

around Columbia were closed, and so was a 75-mile stretch of Interstate 95 that is a key route connecting Miami to Washington, D.C., and New York.

“This is different than a hurricane because it is water, it is slow moving and it is sitting. We can’t just move the water out,” Gov. Nikki Haley said at a news conference.

One death was reported in the area Sunday, bringing weather-related deaths to seven since the storm began days earlier.

People were told to stay off roads and remain indoors until floodwaters recede, and a curfew was issued for Columbia and across two surrounding counties. The capital city told all 375,000 of its water customers to boil water before drinking because of water line breaks and the threat of rising water to a treatment plant.

Nearly 30,000 customers were without power at one point.

State forecasters said another two to six inches could

fall around the state, and it could be Tuesday before skies are sunny. The rainstorm around the Southeast has drawn tropical moisture from offshore that’s linked up with an area of low pressure and a slow-moving front.

Local officials counted several hundred water rescues by mid-morning before Columbia Fire Chief Aubry Jenkins said in an interview that there were too many rescues to keep count.

“We’re just trying to get to everyone,” Jenkins said. “But there are places we just haven’t gotten to.”

One of the hardest hit areas in Columbia was near Gills Creek, where a weather station recorded more than 18 inches of rain – or more than a third of the city’s average yearly rainfall – nearly all of it in 24 hours. The creek was 10 feet above flood stage, spilling floodwaters that almost reached the stoplights at a four-lane intersection.

Cutler the difference in Bears’ first win The Bears’ 22-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders was a case study in what Bears fans can look forward to over the next year and a half or so.

Once it was clear Jay Cutler would start at quarterback, it wasn’t surprising. It wasn’t pretty at times, and it could have gone either way in the end.

The Bears and Raiders are similar teams, both fitting in the bottom third or so of the NFL talent-wise – the Raiders with a little more young talent to build around; the Bears with a little better veterans.

This was what a game be-

tween two rebuilding football teams looks like.

Based on his comments after the game, Bears coach John Fox kind of agrees.

“As I’ve said many times, we’re building – I don’t know about this ‘re’ stuff. I don’t know what that means,” he said. “We’re, hopefully, going to get better as we move forward. Hopefully, we can build on this, and I think we will.”

I suspect Fox knows building can mean adding to what you already have, but rebuilding means tearing it down and starting from scratch.

Which category the Bears

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush really belong in will be decided by what they end up doing at quarterback, and Bears fans saw again in the Raiders game why that’s an open question.

The Bears aren’t even in the game against the Raiders without Cutler, and Fox wasn’t shy about complimenting his effort afterward.

“Jay is a tough son of a bug,” Fox said. “He fought an injury. Some lesser guys may

not have been out there, but he was. I thought all in all he played outstanding and well enough for us to win. My hats off to his toughness, battling through that game.”

Cutler talked afterward about the difficulties of competing with a hamstring that we have to assume still is not 100 percent.

“It’s hard to play an instinctual game and your instinct says, ‘Go,’ but your body says, ‘OK, you can’t do that,’ or ‘It’s not smart,’ ” said Cutler, who finished 28 of 43 for 281 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. “I moved around

that first drive a lot. I told (quarterbacks coach) Dowell (Loggains), ‘I don’t know how much longer we can keep this up.’

“We tried to manage it from there on out in the fourth quarter. That last drive, you have to do what you have to do.”

As well as Cutler played, however, it appeared he once again would shoot himself and his team in the foot when he threw an interception to the ageless Charles Woodson with 6:50 left in the game and the Bears leading, 19-17.

Freeman, Falcons roll past Texans The ASSOCIATED PRESS GLENDALE, Ariz. – Devonta Freeman scored three touchdowns and the Atlanta Falcons remained unbeaten, romping to a 48-21 victory over the hapless Houston Texans on Sunday.

Freeman, who took over as the starting running back after rookie Tevin Coleman sustained a rib injury in Week 2, has scored six TDs in the past two games.

The Falcons improved to 4-0 for only the fourth time in club history.

DOVER, Del. – Kevin Harvick dominated a race he had to win to advance to the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs, while six-time champion Jimmie Johnson was eliminated from the field.

Harvick led 354 laps Sunday at Dover International Speedway and earned the third automatic berth in the 12-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. Harvick was mired in 15th in the standings and had to win to keep his title defense alive.

“Never quit. That’s why right here, guys,” Harvick said over the radio as he took the checkered flag.

Johnson entered fifth in the standings and, with 10 career wins at Dover, seemed a lock to advance. His No. 48 Chevrolet was forced off the track for 36 laps with a torn rear axle seal and he plummeted in the standings.

Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer also were eliminated as the Chase field was sliced from 16 to 12.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. tied with McMurray in points and earned the final spot on a tiebreaker.

Four more drivers will be eliminated in the next threerace segment that starts next week at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth had already earned berths in the next round with wins in the first two Chase races. Carl Edwards also advanced along with Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.

Truex survived after he was sent to the rear for the field after his team made an unapproved adjustment to the right rear after inspection. Gordon’s drive for a fifth championship still is alive in his final season.

After being sacked to start the drive, Cutler twice entrusted the No. 4-turned-No. 1 Wilson after a critical drop, including on third down. He found Bennett on fourth down, then Eddie Royal two plays later to position Gould.

It was Cutler’s 22nd game-winning drive, but first under Fox, who summed up the performance well.

was the kind of performance they can “build” on and perhaps be a better team next week.

It should be interesting to see if the Bears can take another step and how far Cutler can take them.

CHICAGO – Oakland coach Jack Del Rio said the Raiders knew Jay Cutler would play.

Bears coach John Fox revealed the quarterback was closer to playing last week than many realize.

Yet it was a complete unknown how Cutler, after missing last week because of a hamstring injury and being limited in three practices leading to Sunday, would play at less than 100 percent, much less if he’d go.

“I don’t like the training room,” Cutler said. “… I want to be back playing, so that’s kind of my mindset.”

Sure enough, it was Cutler on the field for the Bears’ opening series, niftily hopping over a fallen lineman and finding tight end Martellus Bennett to his left for an explosive gain.

He hit receiver Marquess Wilson on third-and-2 for another chunk play, putting the Bears in business at the Oakland 10.

Of course, the Bears’ problem this season – and Cutler’s his whole career – has been doing it for 60 minutes.

Almost on cue, Forte fumbled to opened the second half, then Cutler’s accuracy began to wane. Providence boys focused on another state trip

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – After finishing fourth at last year’s Class 3A boys golf finals, Providence Catholic hoped it could turn in another strong showing this season despite graduating four of its six state competitors.

Things have gone pretty well so far this season for coach John Platt’s Celtics, who kick off the postseason this week after enjoying another successful regular season.

With juniors Ricky Costello, who took sixth at state, and Mike Cascino as the lone participants back from last year’s group that competed throughout the playoffs, Providence looks like it might make another run.

The Celtics won titles at the St. Laurence, Lemont, Mount Carmel, Providence and Sterling invites and placed second at Addison Trail, the Don Nichols Will County Invite and the Chicago Catholic League meet.

Providence begins its postseason quest Tuesday in the Homewood-Flossmoor Regional, which will be played at Balmoral Woods in Crete. It will be joined there by Joliet Township, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East.

“We are looking forward to playing at Balmoral Woods for the regionals,” Platt said.

“It’s not an easy course and I think it favors the teams that

played their last year for the sectionals. We are just looking to get through to the sectionals. Moving on is the most important, whether you are first or third. It’s about getting to the next stage.

“Ricky is playing well right now. He has won two consecutive tournaments and has been right there throughout the season. He and Michael

went through the state run last year. We need everyone to play to their capabilities.”

Lincoln-Way Central’s Anthony Bolden also was an individual state qualifier last season.

All of the other Class 3A boys squads will be hoping to reach the St. Charles East Sectional, which will also be Oct. 12 at St. Andrews in West Chicago.

Athletes from Bolingbrook, Lockport, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville join three Naperville schools in Tuesday’s Naperville Central Regional, which is at The Links at Carillon.

In Class 2A, Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West join the hosts at the Lemont Regional at Broken Arrow. In addition, athletes from Coal City, Morris, Peotone and Reed-Custer need to get through the Pontiac Regional in order to advance to the Nazareth Academy Sectional, which will also be Oct. 12 at Broken Arrow.

Lemont, led by Raymond Sullivan, hopes to again qualify for state as a team while Morris’ Nick McPherson also plans on a return trip as an individual.

Class 1A boys teams from Seneca and Wilmington will play in the Seneca Regional at Nettle Creek while Dwight

will host a regional at the Dwight Country Club.

Most of the area’s Class AA girls teams will be competing in Wednesday’s Plainfield Central Regional at Wedgewood. The field there consists of Joliet Catholic, Joliet Township, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way West, Lockport, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Providence and Romeoville.

Bolingbrook, Plainfield East and Plainfield North will be taking part in the Waubonsie Valley Regional at Springbrook in Aurora and Lemont will be in the Hinsdale South Regional. Qualifiers from those three regionals will advance to the Oct. 12 Neuqua Valley Sectional, which will be held at Naperbrook in Naperville.

The lone returning area girls state qualifier is Providence’s Alyssa Gromala.

Minooka, which is in the Champaign Centennial Regional, hopes to advance to the sectional for a fifth consecutive year. It wants to earn a spot in the Normal Community Sectional, which is at Illinois State’s Weibring Club.

For Class A girls teams, Peotone and Wilmington will be in the Watseka Regional while Dwight and Seneca participate in the Streator Woodland Regional.

Lewis women, men swimmers claim wins in season openers SUBMITTED REPORTS VALPARAISO, Ind. – Lewis University’s women’s and men’s swimming teams opened their seasons with decisive road victories over NCAA Division I Valparaiso University on Saturday.

The Flyers women’s swimming team won all 11 events to claim a 146-45 victory while the men’s team captured a 140-62 victory over the Crusaders.

For the women’s team, Montana Clasby won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.05) and the 200 IM (2:13.91) and swam the second leg of a winning 200

medley relay (1:51.97), Gabby Jeffers was first in the 50 freestyle (25.19 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.95) and Taylor Vera won the 500 (5:25.16) and 1000 freestyle (11:06.88).

Shannon Sullivan went 2:00.04 to win the 200 freestyle, Sarah Simar took first in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.3, Shelby Leonard went 53.72 for first in the 100 freestyle and she led a victorious effort in the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.51).

Cubs win eighth straight MILWAUKEE – The Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1, on Sunday for their eighth straight win, but will have to play the NL wild card game in Pittsburgh after the Pirates beat Cincinnati.

In bridge, you are a team of two.

During the bidding, normally you have a two-sided conversation to decide the best contract. Occasionally, though, one of you takes charge – assumes captaincy – our topic this week.

This happens when partner has described his hand accurately. He typically leaves the final decision to his partner.

In today’s deal, North makes a game-invitational limit raise in spades.

This makes opener the captain. He decides whether it is a partscore deal (he passes), a game deal (he raises to four spades), or a slam deal – as here, he makes a four-club control-bid (cue-bid).

Then, since North has a slam-suitable hand with one ace, two kings and a doubleton, he control-bids four diamonds.

Dear Dr. K: I had a heart attack in my 50s, and so did my dad. Heart disease obviously runs in the family. How do I talk to my kids about what this means for them?

Dear Reader: As a parent, you already know that taking care of your children is just as (if not more) important as taking care of yourself. If you have a family history of heart disease, that means teaching your children what they can and should do to prevent heart disease.

Family history contributes to heart risk in two ways. The first is directly, through genes passed from one generation to the next. Genes affect many factors that influence heart disease risk – for example, the level of LDL “bad� cholesterol in your blood, your blood pressure, how easily your blood vessels relax, how easily your blood clots, whether you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, the level of inflammation in your body and many more.

Genes, however, are not the whole story.

Families often share the same diet, have the same attitude toward physical activity, live in the same area and belong to the same culture.

If your parents smoke, you’re more likely to smoke. All these factors also may explain why heart disease and stroke run in some families.

In other words, genes are not destiny. I have a friend whose father died in his early 50s of a heart attack.

That “gave him religion.� Beginning in his early 30s, he began to eat a healthy diet and became an avid runner.

He ran every day – by which I mean every single day, in rain, sleet, hail or snow, for 30 years.

Dear Abby: My wife used the search feature for the Ashley Madison emails and discovered an old account I had signed up for late one night, before we were together. I had forgotten all about it. When she brought it up, I panicked and lied because I was embarrassed, but immediately told her what it was. She was upset, but I explained the situation and that I hadn’t even thought about it since we have been together.

Now I feel hurt that she didn’t trust me and felt the need to check, using the guise that “some emails were hacked.” But she didn’t check hers, just mine. I am upset that she checked, as I have never done anything to deserve this. How do I get over it without starting a huge fight?
