Rail specialist urges temporary closing of Elwood rail crossing

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A rail safety specialist with the state testified Wednesday that a controversial railway crossing in Elwood is too dangerous to keep open until a long-term solution is found.

Brian Vercruysse, with the Illinois Commerce Commission’s railroad division, was among a handful of witnesses who testified an ICC hearing in Chicago. The hearing was centered on safety concerns at the intersection of Walter Strawn Drive and Route 53 in Elwood.

The ICC earlier this year reopened a 2001 case brought forward by Elwood, Vercruysse said, believing conflicts between funeral processions heading to the nearby Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and semitrailers cannot be resolved with available railway engineering solutions.

“There isn’t an appropriate design fix,” he said. “We don’t want to allow for human error and ... create a tragedy.”

Crossing gates were broken nearly 50 times last year, and village officials have tried to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area.

Part of the problem at the crossing

stems from the increase in truck traffic volume, which has significantly exceeded initial projections from when the crossing project was first discussed in 2001. Traffic has increased from the estimated 7,000 vehicles a day in 2003, with 26 percent being trucks, to 12,000 vehicles in 2013, with 67 percent being semitrailers, according to an Elwood study.

Attempts to improve crossing safety include Union Pacific lengthening the delay between the red light and when the crossing bars come down to give semitrailers time to clear the intersection.

Signs prohibiting right turns on red also were erected, and Will County sheriff’s deputies hired by Union Pacific were stationed there during peak funeral procession hours to marshal traffic.

Vercruysse, however, said potential risks outweigh the benefit of keeping the crossing open.

The ICC, which governs the state’s railway system, heard evidence on whether the state should temporarily close the crossing or make the road oneway. Officials from Union Pacific, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Elwood and the ICC all have urged previously the administrative law judge to temporarily close the crossing. How long

the closure would last is undetermined.

If the crossing is closed, state transportation officials could finish a two-year Phase I study on the feasibility of building an overpass to separate traffic from the crossing.

But Michael Scotti, attorney for CenterPoint Properties, the developer of two nearby intermodals, argued the ICC has not considered the dangers of diverting semitrailers to other local roads with railroad crossings. No studies have been completed to determine what effect this could have on the rest of the region, Scotti said.

Scotti argued that Vercruysse said just last year during a Rail Safety Coordination Meeting in Elwood that an impact analysis is needed before the crossing could be closed to address safety and mobility in the region.

“Has anyone [conducted such a study]?” Scotti said.

“No,” Vercruysse said.

But Vercruysse said the situation at Walter Strawn Drive is pressing because of its unique nature, with the dozens of funeral processions taking Route 53 to the nearby national cemetery.

The hearing was scheduled to continue Thursday.

Two claim sexual harassment

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Two assistant attorneys said they were victims of sexual harassment by the Will County Public Defender and subjected to retaliation when they reported it.

Gail Bembnister and Kate Flynn filed a federal suit Tuesday against Frank Astrella, the public defender’s office and Will County.

Bembnister and Flynn were hired as assistant public defenders a few months before Astrella was appointed to the top position in 2008, according to the lawsuit.

The suit claims Astrella made sexually suggestive comments about women’s clothing and bodies, made inquiries into employees’ sex

lives and history, and made lewd comments related to sex to or in front of Bembnister and Flynn.

Bembnister filed a complaint with then-Chief Judge Gerald Kinney in March 2012.

Flynn corroborated they’d been subjected to inappropriate behavior, but no disciplinary action was taken against Astrella, according to the lawsuit.

But Astrella and the staff “subjected [the two women] to harsher and different disciplinary standards [and] more negative terms and conditions of employment” than their colleagues, according to the suit.

Bembnister and Flynn were subsequently assigned to the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

“A transfer to River Valley is a well-known punitive assignment that presents little or no chance for advancement within the Will County public defender’s office,” the lawsuit claims.

The women also claim promotions they should have received based on seniority to adult misdemeanor and felony departments went instead to other assistants since they filed a report with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission earlier this year.

The suit filed Tuesday in federal court does not specify the amount of damages sought.

Astrella did not immediately return a message left Wednesday asking for comment on the lawsuit.

Plainfield therapeutic riding program provides therapy to clients of all ages

Starting in spring and through fall, Ainslee – who has severe developmental delays caused by a seizure disorder – receives therapy on horseback from the Ready Set Ride therapeutic recreational facility at 13056 Essington Road in Plainfield, said Ainslee’s mother, Trisha Hayner-Cook.

When the program stops during the winter, Ainslee’s’ limbs become stiff and her posture slackens, HaynerCook said. It’s the program’s thoroughness – which includes interacting with the horses – that makes the difference.

“It’s just not 45 minutes on a horse and then go home,” Hayner-Cook said.

The nonprofit program began in 2001, said Lisa Afshari, one of the directors, when the founder discovered her daughter – who had autism and speech delays – talked more when riding a horse.

The founder is no longer with the program, Afshari said.

With 14 horses providing 80 rides a week, the program caters to individuals on the autism spectrum, as well as those with cerebral palsy, chromosome disorders, visual impairments and multiple sclerosis, Afshari said. Some clients are nonverbal, she added.

But even through the program shuts down in the winter, the horses still need to be maintained.

The advantage of using horses is that therapy – to the child – feels like fun with a cherished pet instead of work, Afshari said.

It facilitates speech therapy because the child is sitting tall and straight, enhancing lung capacity. It helps clients with core strength, trunk control, balance, stretching, developing various muscle groups, empathy and self-esteem, Afshari said.

For Bridie Boyce, 12, of Naperville, who is on the autism spectrum and has epilepsy, therapy initiated a passion for stories – if the books are about horses, said Bridie’s mother, Meg Boyce.

It also has become an absorbing hobby. Bridie has DVDs, action figures, clothing and bed sheets all featuring horses, Boyce said.

Games on horseback include placing colored rings on matching poles and playing “resort,” where riders write their names on a dry erase board, maneuvering their horses down the “wa-

ter slide” and shooting water guns at “sharks” tied to a fence, Afshari said. They also play baseball, swinging bats and stealing bases.

“Many of them have never played baseball due to their disabilities,” Afshari said.

Good therapy horses are less about breed and more about personality, Afshari

said. Will a horse mind hoops hanging off its ears and balls bouncing off its back? Can it tolerate poking, prodding and riders that lean to one side? Can it accurately read body language?

“If the horse panics and thinks the child is falling off, we know it will not be a good horse for a special-needs child,” Afshari said.

Horse size also is important. Side walkers can’t balance small children on very tall horses. Children requiring wheelchairs can’t stretch their legs across a wide horse.

Not every horse can accommodate a 200-pound adult.

Every client cannot tolerate every gait. Some horses have long strides, short steps. A “swing back and forth” walk rather than lifting and placing their feet on the ground makes rides less bumpy, Afshari said.

Finally, Ready Set Ride depends on trained volunteers – three per ride – and always is in need of volunteers and donations. Grants offset some of the therapy cost, Afshari said.

They also help with buying horses, including twice-yearly routine veterinarian and dental care. Grants don’t cover horse maintenance, however.

“Even in the winter, they still need to eat three times a day,” Afshari said.

Will County District 5 candidates focus on taxes

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Board member Reed Bible hopes next week to retain his position as the first-ever Democrat to be elected in Will County District 5.

He is joined on the Nov. 4 ballot by fellow Democrat Sheila Raddatz, 42, a substitute teacher from Plainfield. On the Republican side, Gretchen Fritz, 41, is running alongside former Wheatland Township Board member Darren BenneReed field, who was Bible appointed earlier this year to the board to replace Lee Ann Goodson after she resigned.

The top two vote-getters in Tuesday’s election will win a seat.

Bennefield’s appointment

lasts until the November election.

Bennefield said his accomplishments as a Wheatland Township trustee, coupled with his responsibilities as a small-business owner, provide him the experience needed to hold a county board seat.

Bible, who previously worked as a consultant for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, holds the positions of treasurer for the Plainfield Township Democratic Organization and 13th Precinct Sheila committeeman.

Raddatz He was elected to the historically Republican district after a remap. Bible is a member of Hospice of the Golden Isles, American Field Service, Organizing for America and the NAACP.

Fritz, a member of the National Rifle Association, would fight for fewer taxes and regulations. Fritz, who serves as a deacon at Fellowship Chapel of the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Bolingbrook, also is a firm believer in the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Raddatz is running on the ballot alongside Bible. She has been involved with the community over the years, taking part in the local Parent Teaching Organization in Gretchen Plainfield, Boy Fritz Scouts and Girls Scouts. Raddatz also is a strong supporter of unions, with her husband serving in the Local 150 Operating Engineers in Joliet.

board to raise the county’s property tax levy by 1.5 percent, or $2.9 million, to help pay for the county’s five-year road and capital improvement plan.

That means the average homeowner will pay $5.50 more per year in property tax, he said.

“There comes a time when you have to make a responsible investment,” Bible said. “The majority of that will go toward new construction. Then we’re pulling more new construcDarren tion into our tax Bennefield base, and the bigger your tax base, the less strain there is on homeowners.”

But Bennefield said he’s against increasing the property tax rate, noting the county is sitting on RTA funds that

“There’s a lot of money sitting there in the bank, so to speak, that we can use,” Bennefield said. “Tough decisions are not raising taxes. Tough decisions are looking back at all our departments and figuring out where we can cut.”

The county board’s District 5 contains portions of Plainfield and Wheatland townships.

Three vie for seats in Will County District 9

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com The Will County Board’s District 9 election includes longtime board member Walter Adamic; Lauren Staley-Ferry, the daughter-in-law of a county board member; and Annette Parker, a Lockport Township park commissioner.

Staley-Ferry was the top Democratic vote-getter in a three-way March primary in which incumbent Diane Zigrossi did not advance to Tuesday’s ballot. Adamic came in second in the primary.

Parker, of Crest Hill, ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Each district is represented by two county board members,

so voters on Tuesday will pick two of the three candidates to represent District 9.

Adamic has the longest tenure on the board with 25 years, but challengers Parker and Staley-Ferry believe they have what it takes to shake up county Walter government.

Adamic Parker said her three years on the Lockport Township Park Board, coupled with her 13 years as the marketing director for the Rialto Square Theatre, has introduced her to all walks of life and she knows how to work with people. She’s also a firm believer against raising taxes,

Parker said.

“It hits them personally. It hits their wallet,” she said. “At the park board, we didn’t raise tax dollars. We budgeted. We planned longterm. I fight for the same on the board.”

Staley-Ferry, mother of a Lauren Staley-Ferry 4-year-old son and a longtime employee at Capital One Financial, said her “energy” and “fresh perspective” would be a good addition to the board.

“My generation needs to get more involved, and I think that time is now,” she said.

Adamic said his wealth of experience means he’s the only one in the race with an understanding of county government.

“I think if you’re running, you ought to be running to better your Annette community,” Parker Adamic said.

Judge yet to be questioned in son’s domestic battery case Missing a real

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Investigators said they have yet to interview the Will County judge who allegedly saw her son threatening his girlfriend earlier this month.

Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas said Wednesday de- Louis Goode tectives had not been able to question Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes about the Oct. 6 incident that led to the arrest of Louis D. Goode, 29, on domestic battery charges.

“She had been out of town [last week], and we are now trying to schedule an interview,” Kaupas said. Sheriff’s

police made the initial arrest and remain under the direction of the special prosecutor who is handling the case.

Alessio Policandriotes is a judicial candidate for retention in Tuesday’s election; she also is a witness in the case. According to an order of protection taken out by the victim, the judge was at the scene when her son threatened to kill her.

Goode was arraigned and pleaded not guilty Tuesday before Grundy County Judge Robert Marsaglia, who was assigned to the case by the state Supreme Court. While Tuesday’s proceedings were held at the Will County Courthouse, the next pretrial hearing on Dec. 15 will take place in Grundy County.

Goode and his 28-year-old girlfriend allegedly argued

over money the night before his arrest. Goode allegedly kicked and choked the woman before dragging her by the hair to his car and making her get inside the trunk, according to an order of protection the woman filed.

The fight resumed the next morning and Goode allegedly threatened to kill the woman as Alessio Policandriotes arrived to take him to his first day of work on the Jury Commission, according to reports.

The victim went to file an order of protection later that morning and deputies took Goode into custody at the courthouse when he left for lunch.

Marsaglia ordered Tuesday that the woman’s protection order against Goode will continue. Goode was being held on $50,000 bond.

Two Republicans, Democrat vie for District 2 board in Will County

lleonecross@shawmedia.com A Democrat and small business owner is vying for one of two seats in a heavily Republican area covering parts of Frankfort, New Lenox and Homer townships in Will County Board District 2.

Donald Keane, owner of Stray Bar in Frankfort, will face longtime Republican board member Jim Moustis and Cory Singer.

Singer is a former board m e m b e r w h o Donald lost his bid for Keane county executive in 2012.

Current board member David Izzo, R-Tinley Park, is not seeking re-election.

Jim Keane is an Moustis Army veteran and union pipefitter with a 42-year career in mechanical contracting, working his way up from welder to pres- Cory ident of Delta Singer Piping in South Holland, and vice president of Midstate Mechanical in Romeoville.

In a June interview, Keane told The Herald-News he would promote business in Will County and bring a “fresh approach and aggressive ideas” to the board.

Singer said a tax increase is the “last thing” the county needs right now, noting a vote split along party lines earlier this month on a property tax levy increase. Democrats voted to increase the county’s property tax levy by 1.5 percent, or by $2.9 million, intending to spend much of it on capital improvement projects, while Republicans voted against it.

“The one proposed is not large,” he said. “But when every taxing body does this, and they do it each year a little bit here and there, it adds up.”

Moustis, who serves as Frankfort Township supervisor and was first elected to the board in 1992, said he’s “more committed” than ever to serve his constituents. Moustis said holding the line on taxes and spending remains his No. 1 and 2 priorities.

“There’s still that fire in my gut,” Moustis said. “I represent my area well, and I make a difference. I always speak up to provoke different viewpoints and engage a debate.”

Currently the board’s Republican caucus chair, Moustis previously served as board chairman from 2001 to 2012.

JOLIET – The governor’s race is too close to call, local U.S. representatives’ seats seem to be safe, and Americans like cockroaches more than they like Congress.

These statements were just a few made Wednesday by leaders of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as they discussed the current political landscape in Illinois and Washington, D.C., with Joliet-area business leaders.

Ron Eidshaug, the chamber’s vice president for congressional and public affairs, and Great Lakes Region Executive Director Ben Taylor spoke to business leaders at a Wednesday luncheon sponsored by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry at the Joliet Country Club, 1009 Spencer Road.

They also talked about how local businesses can bring local perspective to Washington, D.C. “We want those newer members of Congress to talk to their leadership and say, ‘I’m hearing from the business community in my district, in

increased partisanship, more focus on primaries and redistricting.

“Now, the middle is essentially gone,” he said, adding that a low level of discourse between the right and left has turned personal and hindered cooperation.

Eidshaug also said communication between Congress and President Barack Obama has waned due to Obama’s willingness to bypass Congress and go directly to the American people.

While Obama is an excellent campaigner who can drum up public support, Eidshaug said that has contributed to a lack of cooperation between the executive and legislative branches.

Chamber leaders reflect on state, national politics

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – Authorities have closed their investigation into the slaying earlier this year of two women inside their home.

“All evidence shows Joseph Sipple, 27, acted alone in this heinous act,” Police Chief Tim Henson said in a statement released Wednesday.

Police identified Sipple in August as having used the same gun to kill himself that was used to shoot Donna J. Denker, 60, and her daughter, Kelli L. Denker, 30, at their Dwight home June 14.

Sipple committed suicide when police came to arrest him for an unrelated burglary two weeks later, authorities said.

Another male relative also was wounded when the mother and daughter were killed.

On June 26, LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies arrived to arrest Sipple at his girlfriend’s residence near Sheridan after linking him to stolen property. Sipple reportedly ran to a

nearby garage and killed himself with a .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun.

Henson said ballistic tests confirmed the gun Sipple used was the same that killed the Denkers.

On July 30, police searched a large wooded area near Sipple’s girlfriend’s house and found a large blue tarp hiding several long gun cases, Henson said in the statement. The cases and guns inside had been reported stolen to Morris police.

“Also discovered were several items belonging to Joseph Sipple, including what was believed to be a pair of his white tennis shoes, in which police were told on numerous occasions he always wore,” Henson said in the statement.

Henson confirmed the Glock was reported stolen in a Morris burglary. Sipple was involved in burglarizing the Denker house in August 2013.

On Oct. 21, testing at the state police crime lab confirmed the white tennis shoes found in a blue tub next to the stolen guns had the Denkers’ DNA on them, Henson said.

Income has not kept up with rising housing costs, said Pam Terrell, Catholic Charities community services director. She also said there is a disparity among housing offered on the East and West sides of Joliet, along with a lack of access to community resources.

“If you have no gas stations or banks or grocery stores on your side of town, that has a significant impact,” she said.

Attendees said people who are homeless struggle with transitioning to owning or renting a home because of poor credit history and undocumented income. They would need information on how to budget their money and repair their credit.

JOLIET – Local and state groups met Wednesday to develop a plan that would help Latinos gain access to education, housing and health care.

The Illinois Latino Family Commission and Illinois Welcoming Center coordinated a community dialogue among dozens of residents, organizations and local leaders.

The dialogue, which also addressed employment and family issues, comes after the Spanish Community Center was selected in October to house an Illinois Welcoming Center.

The Joliet organization is one of several statewide that serve as one-stop shops for social services designed for immigrants and refugees.

Wednesday was the beginning of a community alliance among agencies, said Silvia Villa, director the Office of Latino Affairs for the Illinois Human Services Department.

Man faces sex abuse charges

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Police said a man sexually abused a teenage girl for five years.

Daniel Hillsman, 58, was arrested Tuesday on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse and child pornography.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa said authorities were notified Aug. 25 by the now-17year-old victim that Hillsman

had molested her over a fiveyear period.

Rompa said officers notified the Department of Children and Family Services and police seized Hillsman’s laptop computer and cellphones.

After those items were examined, an arrest warrant was issued for Hillsman on Tuesday. He was located at a Bolingbrook hotel where he’d been living and taken to the Will County jail, Rompa said.

Records show Hillsman was being held on $1 million bond.

Will County Drug Court to graduate class of 16 Thursday THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – Will County Drug Court is set to graduate a class of 16 people Thursday.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be at 1 p.m. in the Victorian Ballroom at the Jacob Henry Mansion, 15 S. Richards St., Joliet.

The Drug Court program is designed to help abusers who have committed nonviolent offenses battle their addictions, according to a news release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. Those allowed into the program are screened and must remain drug-free, submit to random drug tests, find employment, follow through with treatment, and attend weekly Drug Court sessions.

The graduation ceremony

is the final step in the yearlong program.

More than 330 people have graduated from Drug Court over the past 14 years, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow spearheaded the creation of the program, according to the news release.

“Drug Court helps recovering addicts get their lives back on track, and it’s a tremendous value for our taxpayers,” Glasgow said in the news release.

“Participants are given the guidance and supervision they need to break their addictions and rejoin the community as productive citizens.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Galway Kinnell dies Kinnell’s wife, Bobbie Bristol, said he died Tuesday afternoon at their home in Sheffield, Vermont. He had leukemia.

Among the most celebrated poets of his time, he won the Pulitzer and National Book Award for the 1982 release “Selected Poems” and later received a MacArthur Genius Fellowship. In 1989, he

was named Vermont’s poet laureate, and the Academy of American Poets gave him the 2010 Wallace Stevens Award for lifetime achievement. His other books included “Body Rags,” “Mortal Acts, Mortal Words,” “The Past” and his final book of poetry, “Strong Is Your Hold,” released in 2006.

Kinnell’s style blended the physical and the philosophi-

cal, not shying from the most tactile and jarring details of humans and nature exploring their greater dimensions.

He once told the Los Angeles Times that his intention was to “dwell on the ugly as fully, as far, and as long” as he “could stomach it.” In one of his most famous poems, “The Bear,” he imagines a hunter who consumes animal blood

and excrement and comes to identify with his prey, wondering “what, anyway, was that sticky infusion, that rank flavor of blood, that poetry, by which I lived?”

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, and graduate of Princeton University, Kinnell was influenced in childhood

by Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allen Poe among others.

CHICAGO – Authorities say 19 of 29 suspects in Illinois and Indiana are under arrest in an alleged “card cracking” fraud scheme that originated Chicago’s South Side and is spreading.

They say it sometimes has links to rap music. Chicago U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon said Wednesday the schemers deposited bad checks in a third party’s account, then withdrew cash before banks determined something was wrong. Total losses were more than $1.7 million. Four Indiana-based suspects belong to the rap group, “RACK Boyz.” They allegedly posted videos bragging about the cash the scheme generates and seeking to enlist others to participate.

New chairman of chief judges body named

CHICAGO – A northern Illinois judge who helped implement a cameras-in-court program has been selected as chairman of a committee composed of chief judges from around the state.

Joseph McGraw is chief judge of the Rockford-based 17th Judicial Circuit. He’ll assume the chairman’s post on the Conference of Chief Judges in January. He takes over from the chief judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit, Elizabeth Robb, who is retiring. The body meets regularly to discuss operations at the 24 circuit courts. It also considers issues referred to it by the Illinois Supreme Court.

Not guilty pleas for suspect in 7 Indiana deaths

CROWN POINT, Ind. – A judge recorded not guilty pleas Wednesday for a former Marine who is charged with murder in the strangulation deaths of two women found in northwestern Indiana and is suspected of killing five others.

During an initial hearing that lasted eight minutes, Lake County Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan explained to Darren Vann that the informal pleas in the strangulation deaths of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy and 35-year-old Anith Jones would become formal in 20 days unless he or his attorney takes action.

Vann, 43, had refused to speak

during an initial hearing in the Hardy case a week earlier and was cited for contempt.

On Wednesday, the convicted sex offender from Gary, Indiana, responded to Sullivan’s questions, giving his address and birth date and repeatedly uttering “yes, ma’am” and “no ma’am.” He also acknowledged that he understood the reason for the hearing. A week earlier, Vann had just stared back silently at Sullivan when she asked him the same question.

Chicago officials close smoke detector loophole

CHICAGO – Officials are closing a loophole in Chicago’s smoke detector rules following an apartment building fire that killed four children.

reports the city council’s zoning committee agreed Tuesday to stop allowing landlords to avoid fines by installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors after being cited for a violation.

The ordinance will still fine landlords from $200 to $500 a day for failing to install or maintain working detectors.

At least 15 people have died in Chicago fires this year.

Twelve of the fatalities were in residential buildings without working detectors, including the four children who died in the September fire.

Amtrak seeks solutions to Chicago rail congestion

CHICAGO – Amtrak is setting up a panel of experts to find solutions to Chicago’s rail gridlock. Despite some successes,

Amtrak officials say the city’s freight and passenger rail lines remain tangled and congested.

In an announcement Tuesday, Amtrak citied delays of four hours or more for passenger trains running between Chicago and Cleveland, calling them a near daily occurrence.

Chicago is the most important hub for Amtrak, which has to share space on tracks owned by freight railroads. Chicago also is the main gateway for freight traffic between the East and West coasts.

The Amtrak panel is expected to issue recommendations by the end of May. Its members are former U.S. Rep. Jack Quinn, former head of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board Linda Morgan and Amtrak board member Tom Carper.

AP report: If Ebola batters U.S., nation is not ready

By JEFF DONN and GARANCE BURKE The Associated Press The U.S. health care apparatus is so unprepared and short on resources to deal with the deadly Ebola virus that even small clusters of cases could overwhelm parts of the system, according to an Associated Press review of readiness at hospitals and other components of the emergency medical network.

Experts broadly agree that a widespread outbreak across the country is extremely unlikely, but they also concur it is impossible to predict with certainty, since previous Ebola epidemics have been confined to remote areas of Africa. And Ebola is not the only possible danger that causes concern; experts say other deadly infectious diseases – ranging from airborne viruses such as SARS, to an unforeseen new strain of the flu, to more exotic plagues such as Lassa fever – could crash the health care system.

To assess America’s abil-

ity to deal with a major outbreak, the AP examined multiple indicators of readiness: training, manpower, funding, emergency room shortcomings, supplies, infection control and protection for health care workers. AP reporters also interviewed dozens of top experts in those fields.

The results were worrisome. Supplies, training and funds are all limited. And there are concerns about whether health care workers would refuse to treat Ebola victims.

Following the death of a patient with Ebola in a Texas hospital and the subsequent infection of two of his nurses, medical officials and politicians are scurrying to fix preparedness shortcomings.

But remedies cannot be implemented overnight. And fixes will be very expensive.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Duchin, chairman of the Public Health Committee of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, said it will

take time to ramp up readiness, including ordering the right protective equipment and training workers to use it. “Not every facility is going to be able to obtain the same level of readiness,” he said.

AP reporters frequently heard assessments that, generally, the smaller the facility, the less prepared, less funded, less staffed and less trained it is to fight Ebola and other deadly infectious diseases.

“The place I worry is: Are most small hospitals adequately prepared?” said Dr. Ashish Jha, a Harvard University specialist in health care quality and safety. “It clearly depends on the hospital.”

He said better staff training is the most important element of preparation for any U.S. Ebola outbreak. He believes a small group of personnel at each hospital needs to know the best procedures, because sick people are likely to appear first at medium-size or small medical centers, which are much more common than big ones.

by Islamic State militants.

But the ability of the small force to turn the tide of battle will depend on the effectiveness of their weapons and on continued U.S.-led airstrikes against the extremists.

“We are waiting for the peshmerga. We want to see what weapons they have,”

said 30-year-old Nidal Attur, who arrived in Suruc two weeks ago from a small village near Kobani.

He and other euphoric Kurds waited for hours along streets in Suruc to catch a glimpse of the peshmerga troops they consider to be heroes. Most were seeing them for the first time.

After a rousing send-off from thousands of cheering supporters a day earlier in the Iraqi Kurdish capital of Irbil, the peshmerga forces landed early Wednesday at the Sanliurfa airport in southeastern Turkey.

They left the airport in buses escorted by Turkish security forces and were expected to

travel to Kobani later Wednesday. Others traveled to Turkey in trucks and vehicles loaded with cannons and heavy machine guns. They crossed into Turkey through the Habur border gate before daybreak Wednesday and were driving about 250 miles to Suruc.

The peshmerga troops – about 150 in all – were expected to join up along the road to the Mursitpinar border crossing, where they were to enter Kobani.

Separately, a small group of Syrian rebels entered Kobani from Turkey on Wednesday in a push to help Kurdish fighters there against the militants, activists and Kurdish officials said.

Islamic State group reportedly kills 30 Iraqis THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BAGHDAD – Islamic State group militants lined up 30 men in western Iraq and shot them dead Wednesday, an official and residents said, the latest mass killing carried out by the group since its advance across the country.

The slayings, on a main street in the al-Bakir district in the town of Hit, targeted Sunnis tribal fighters allied with the government and

members of the security forces that the extremists captured when they overran the town, the official and residents said.

The militants first paraded the men through town, shouting through loudspeakers that the captured men were apostates who fought against them, residents said. The extremists then lined up the men and shot them dead with assault rifles, residents said.

Anbar provincial council chairman Sabah Karhout said those killed were captured when the Islamic State group overran the town, located about 85 miles west of Baghdad, earlier this month.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has made some of the most important policy speeches of his pontificate in recent days, catching up for lost time following months of attention to bureaucratic reform and the turbulent meeting of bishops on family issues that just ended.

Often speaking in his native Spanish, Francis has focused on issues close to his heart – the plight of the poor and unemployed, the environment and even evolution, seemingly emboldened to speak his mind on topics that must make even some of his closest collaborators squirm.

He hasn’t changed church doctrine. But he has pushed the envelope on some issues, raised eyebrows with his blunt speaking style on others, and made clear where his progressive social priorities lie. Here are some highlights from a busy week at the Vatican, with issues that Francis might raise again when he makes a major policy speech to the European Parliament next month.

SILENT DEATH PENALTY In his most explosive speech to a group of penal lawyers, Francis went well beyond the Vatican’s previous opposition to capital punishment by denouncing life prison terms as a “hidden death penalty.” Francis’ outreach to prisoners is wellknown: He famously washed the feet of juvenile delinquents – Muslims and women among them – at a Rome detention center during his first Holy Thursday as pope.

In his speech last week, Francis denounced prison systems as “out of control” for depriving people of their dignity, citing recourse to the death penalty, detaining people without charge or conviction and holding inmates in isolation, which

he called a form of “physical and psychological torture.”

Putting him squarely at odds with the United States, where he is going next year, Francis also denounced extraordinary renditions, which the CIA used after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to take terror suspects to third countries for interrogation.

BIG BANG Francis raised some eyebrows with his remarks on creation and evolution, saying the Big Bang theory doesn’t contradict the Christian belief in creation. While his words were very Franciscan in their bluntness – “When we read the story of Creation in Genesis we risk imagining that God was a magician” – Francis was merely restating what the Catholic Church has long taught: that there is no contradiction between creation and evolution. Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI spent his entire pontificate elaborating on the compatibility of faith and scientific reason, insisting that the cosmos isn’t a system of random chaos but rather an organized system where the hand of the Creator is obvious. St. John Paul II and Pope Pius XII voiced similar conclusions before him. Francis put the church’s thinking in his own words: “Evolution in nature doesn’t contradict the notion of creation because evolution presupposes the creation of beings who evolve,” he said.

UNEMPLOYMENT Francis also grabbed headlines when he acknowledged that his concern for the poor, the unemployed and the environment would lead some to label him a communist. “They don’t understand that love for the poor is at the center of the Gospel,” he said. The remarks were delivered to a meeting of representatives of popular movements at the Vatican.

By LINDSAY WHITEHURST The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY – A Utah couple and their three children found dead last month likely were poisoned, their bodies found together in a locked room with cups next to each of them and empty bottles of methadone and nighttime cold medicine in a trash can in the home.

Police in Springville aren’t saying who killed the family or whether one of the parents might have been involved. Toxicology results have not deter-

mined an exact cause of death, but search warrants obtained Wednesday said the family likely was poisoned.

Benjamin and Kristi Strack were in bed, with children ages 11 through 14 lying around them, tucked in bedding up to their necks, according to the search warrants. Kristi Strack had a red liquid coming out of her mouth.

Some of the bodies looked to have been positioned after they died Sept. 27. They were found by the couple’s older son and Kristi Strack’s mother, who said she couldn’t believe

“she” would do this to the kids, but would not elaborate, police wrote.

Investigators found empty methadone bottles, 10 empty boxes of nighttime cold medicine and two boxes of allergy medicine in their garbage, along with a red liquid substance in Pepsi cups. They also found a pitcher of red juice, a purple bucket with yellow liquid, a bag of marijuana and other medications, including sleeping bills.

Springville Police Lt. Dave Caron said Wednesday he can’t comment on the search war-

rant or speculate about the cause of death until results of a toxicology test come back.

That’s expected in late November, he said.

The search warrant said it wasn’t normal for the children to be in their parents’ room because they have their own rooms.

Kristi Strack was last seen alive at 6 a.m. by the older son’s girlfriend, who also lives in the home. The girlfriend went back to sleep after talking with Kristi Strack, and the house was quiet when the older son and his girlfriend left the house

that afternoon.

When they returned at 7 p.m. and saw the house still was quiet even though all the cars were in the driveway, they knocked on the master bedroom door. When no one answered the couple called Kristi Strack’s mother and her friend, who helped them force it open.

Authorities previously have said the five did not die violently.

The five were identified as Benjamin Strack, 37, his wife, Kristi, 36, and three of their children: Benson, 14, Emery, 12, and Zion, 11.

A breakout of the lava flow was about 100 feet from a Pahoa residence – about the length of a basketball court, said Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira. The couple that lives in the home has left.

Scientists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory who are walking alongside the lava reported its leading edge was

240 yards from Pahoa Village Road, which goes through a commercial hub of the Big Island’s sprawling and isolated Puna district.

“This is just a little quiet village is a very rural community. We farm, we fish, we hunt,” said Jamila Dandini.

“We’re going to be an island on an island.”

The leading edge remained in a large agricultural parcel that included another house, which was about 100 yards from the lava, Oliveira said.

Dozens of homes, business and other structures are in the area of the lava flow. That number could increase as the flow front widens.

“The people who are meant to stay will stay. The people that have to leave, sadly, will leave,” Dandini said.

So far, lava has burned a garden shed, tires and some metal materials.

On Wednesday, it burned mostly vegetation, while the rain helped tamp down smoke from the crackling stream.

Officials are monitoring hazards from the smoke.

Chemists from the observatory detected only low levels of sulfur dioxide, Oliveira said.

The lava flow emerged from a vent in June and until recently had been slowly weaving through uninhabited forest and pastureland.

To the Editor: I’m writing on behalf of “No Illiana 4 US,” the bi-state, grassroots nonprofit group of citizens opposed to the proposed Illiana Tollroad, fighting for the No Build Option and improvement of existing infrastructure.

The $1.3 billion tollroad has been propped up by IDOT and Governor Quinn. Illinois’ dire financial state has positioned the project as a P3 – Private/Public-Partnership.

At a recent IDOT-sponsored investor fair, the public learned that no investor is willing assume the financial guarantee, thus the taxpayers of Illinois will be taking on all of the risk. As a fiscally constrained project, the Illiana Tollroad will be the No. 1 road project in the state, jumping in front of every other project.

Additionally, studies on the proposed tollroad have never properly considered the detrimental effect on agriculture. The land in Will County is rich in soil and heritage. Farmers for generations have, as good stewards of our land, poured their blood, sweat and tears into this rich land to feed Americans and the world.

This way of life and hard work has been passed on for over 175 years in this region. The Illiana would destroy between 3,000 to 6,000 acres and will affect hundreds of businesses. It will destroy far more jobs than the 894 long-term jobs that former IDOT Secretary/ MPO Chair- Ann Schneider (whom has resigned due to scandal) stated the Illiana would produce.

I implore every registered voter in the state of Illinois to find out where your elected representatives stand on the proposed Illiana project and vote them out if they support this financially unstable boondoggle that will fall on the backs of every taxpayer in the state of Illinois if it comes to fruition. HEALTH CARE QUESTIONS To the Editor: Our new Health Care Law not only professed that most citizens would be covered, but also those who had insurance would be better covered and at a lower cost.

Although the administration said earlier that 8 million signed up, they fail to reveal how many were previously insured, how many went to Medicaid, how many actually paid the cost, and now how many are renewing. Thus, many less than 8 million are probably covered, with the latest figures leaving possibly as many as 40 million still not covered.

The cost of insurance was to decrease, but in many cases didn’t. Renewals appear to have significantly increased as have deductibles.

In my case as a retiree, Medicare supplemental insurance has risen approximately 4 percent and longterm care insurance has risen 26 percent and will come close to that again in 2016. Social Security is set to only rise about 1.9 percent, so the increase doesn’t even keep up with insurance costs.

What happened to the assurances concerning our future health care? Oh, that’s right, our politicians don’t care. They said “Pass it and then read it.” And, oh yes, they chose to keep their old full-coverage policies.

VOTE FOR BOLTON To the Editor: In one’s life there are events, circumstances that implore us to action and with that conviction, I take this evening to write and share my concerns for what is our state of affairs.

Last year, the Joliet Park District built a baseball field at Desmond Park, Columbia and Henderson streets, which boosted the neighborhood morale and involvement in the community.

Not only did it do that, but it also got children involved in the program and out of the house, where they were taught what it means to be a team player. Needless to say, the program has had tremendous success in accomplishing our goals in teaching kids respect, discipline, and most of all, getting to learn to get along with others.

Again, we owe the Park District a lot, and with the support in passing the Park District’s referendum, it would allow many improvements, which the Park District would be able to accomplish and are needed.

Please help your community by voting “Yes” to the referendum on Nov. 4.

To the Editor: So just got the ballot for the elections and wondering how the Joliet Park district can put a referendum on the ballot which does not mention the two field houses which will get the majority of the money. I cannot believe that leaving out such details on a election ballot should be legal.

Truth is this referendum is not about security and protection but big spending on two field houses we do not need. Instead, use the field houses at the two Joliet High schools or other school gyms, which taxpayers already paid for with taxpayer money.

At a meeting about the referendum a representative for the referendum said each playground would cost $100,000 to renovate.

Are the swings made of gold, or is that for overpaid patronage workers to install them?

Vote no on this referendum, which does not list how each dollar will be spent. The mailers sent out by the park district with tax dollars also did not include the field house to be built at Inwood.

Area runners aim at trips to state

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com Being on one side or the other of an arbitrary line made a very big difference for area cross country teams in the state’s largest class.

For a state-ranked boys squad such as Plainfield South, it meant not travelling as far to the sectional, but also the good possibility that it would not advance as a team to state.

Meanwhile, a state-ranked boys team such as Lincoln-Way Central will have to make a long trek for the sectional, where it could contend for the title and figures to qualify.

The top five teams and seven individuals from nonqualifying schools earn trips to the Nov. 8 finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Five area schools will be sending a pair of teams to the distant Quincy Sectional, which will be run at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Bob Mays Park.

Minooka is the team to beat in the girls race while Lincoln-Way Central is the only other ranked squad in that race, according to il.milesplit.com.

Coach Kevin Gummerson’s Indians will try to repeat as sectional champions. and earn a seventh straight state trip.

The Knights had been to state four years in a row and six times in the past seven seasons.

“Our girls are really starting to believe that they can run with any team out there,” Gummerson said. “It is so important to have that confidence when you step to the line in a Sectional meet.

They have worked extremely hard and raced the best in the state. They have every right to step to the line confident that they belong. These girls are battle tested and excited to compete for a sectional championship.

“And our group of boys has continued to improve throughout the course of this

O’Fallon gets the nod over Lincoln-Way Central in the boys race while Edwardsville is the other ranked team.

Coach John Taylor’s Knights won their third straight regional, something that hadn’t been done in that program since 1971 after placing five in the top 10 and had a 27-second split.

Central will be looking for its fourth straight state trip and sixth appearance in eight years.

“We are looking to improve

our pack running as this is the key to our team success,” Taylor said. “When the guys race as they are capable of, we will surprise some teams.

We must work together in our packs throughout the race.”

Joliet Central, Joliet West and Lincoln-Way East also will be sending both their boys and girls teams to Quincy, and Providence advanced its girls team there. The Steelmen boys and Griffin girls also advanced to state last season.

Individuals who figure to be among the top finishers include Joliet Central’s Raul Rosendo, Minooka’s Gabe Ceballos, Lincoln-Way Central’s Ian Peterson and Tommy Kolacki and Lincoln-Way East’s Ben Walczak in the boys race and Minooka’s Mackenzie Callahan and Ashley Tutt and Joliet West’s Charlotte

Youell and Kiersten Perry in the girls race.

Teams that competed in the Lockport Regional earned the shorter sectional trip, to the Class 3A Marist Sectional, which will be run at Midlothian Meadows, where the girls race will be at 10 a.m. and the boys race is at 11 a.m.

Plainfield South, Plainfield North and Romeoville as well as five area individuals from four different schools will take part in the boys race, which is regarded as the state’s best meet.

Illinois’ top four boys teams Sandburg, Hinsdale Central, Neuqua Valley and Lyons Township, will all be there.

That leaves room for only one other qualifier from the other ranked squads in the field, Downers Grove North,

Plainfield South and Oswego.

While the girls field isn’t quite as daunting, there still are no givens for a program such as Lockport, which looks to earn a sixth-straight state trip and head to Peoria for the 18th time in the past 21 years for veteran coach Evon Schlotter.

Hinsdale Central is the clear favorite while five others, Lockport, Downers Grove North, Neuqua Valley, Downers Grove South and Lyons, also are state-ranked.

Plainfield South and Bolingbrook also will be on hand, as will five local individuals, four of whom are from Plainfield North.

Runners who hope to be among the leaders include Plainfield North’s Rachael Lau, Plainfield South’s Alexis Grigg and Lockport’s Morgan Bollinger, Emmie Hahn and Haley Beaumont in the girls race and Plainfield North’s Jack Sebok, Bolingbrook’s Johnathon Cook and Plainfield South’s John Partee in the boys race.

In Class 2A, girls teams from Joliet Catholic, Lincoln-Way West and Morris and boys squads from Lincoln-Way West, Providence and Morris will be competing at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the East Peoria Sectional at Illinois Central College.

Top individuals include Morris’ Mya Shannon, West’s Natalie Krol and JCA’s Kennedy Weigt plus West’s Evan Mitchell and Mitch Feehan and Providence’s Michael Davis.

Lemont’s girls, led by Bridget Kunkel, are the favorites in the Wheaton Academy Sectional at Kress Creek Farms in West Chicago, which begins at 10 a.m. The Indians also have two boys competing.

In Class 1A, Peotone advanced both of its teams to the Lisle Sectional, which also features Joliet Catholic’s boys and Gardner-South Wilmington’s Daly Galloway.

In addition, Seneca advanced both squads to the Oregon Sectional.

That’s one of two 5A playoff games involving Joliet

area representatives. The other is Morris at Normal University High.

The reason the temptation is there for the Hilltoppers to sneak a peak to next week is their nemesis of recent years, Montini, is likely to come calling in Round 2. Montini must beat DuSable in Round 1, which should happen.

Meanwhile, JCA (8-1) is continuing to play well behind wingback/emergency quarterback Michael Johnson and wingback Nick Borgra while biding time, hoping junior quarterback Cade Earl can return in the near future. Earl will not play this week, but a return

Normal U-High (9-0) is a No. 1 seed in a southern quadrant of 5A. Morris (5-4) is No. 8.

Yet, because Morris is healthier than it has been in a while, and because the Redskins played larger and stronger competition during the season, my feeling is Morris will get this one and live to see a rematch with Metamora in the quarterfinals and perhaps Sacred Heart-Griffin in the semifinals. Metamora (8-1) has lost only to Morris, 12-8, in Week 2.

Morgan Park lost its first three games, 26-13 to Thornton, 43-6 to Mount Carmel and 30-6 to Wheaton Warrenville South, and now has run off six straight victories. So West will be facing a foe on a roll.

Thornton’s losses were to Naperville North, Bradley, Lincoln-Way North and Lincoln-Way West, which won at Thornton 34-6 in Week 8. The Warriors’ defense, featuring lineman Nick Trolian, has been solid all season.

West, however, is playing its best all-around football since rallying from a 24-7 deficit to stun Lincoln-Way North, 35-24, in Week 7.

Look for both area teams, Lemont and Lincoln-Way West, to get past Round 1. It will get more difficult next week, when Richards likely will be West’s opponent and Lemont will get Crete-Monee or Yorkville.

However, if the Warriors and Indians can reach the quarterfinals, they would meet in a battle supreme.

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com The Cubs were poised to make their biggest free agent splash in years Wednesday night, closing in on a multiyear deal to hire Joe Maddon as their manager, according to several sources.

With the conclusion Wednesday night of the World Series, an announcement was expected as early as Thursday for the two-time American League Manager of the Year, who last week exercised an optout clause in his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sources on both sides of the talks disputed a report late Wednesday calling a deal

“done,” saying negotiations were ongoing and an agreement on contract terms had not been reached.

“It’s not a done deal by far,” said Alan Nero, Maddon’s Chicago-based agent. “We continue in good faith to discuss this with several teams, including the Cubs. We hope something will be resolved quickly.”

Multiple major league sources said the Cubs are the only serious bidder. One industry executive said he’s been told the only holdup involves the Cubs’ fear of MLB backlash for upstaging Game 7 of the World Series.

A deal for Maddon, 60, is expected to be worth about $5 million annually for at least

four years.It would make Maddon among the highest-paid managers in the game and the highest-paid manager in Cubs history.

The deal would come about a month after team president Theo Epstein said manager Rick Renteria would “absolutely” be back for a second season, creating an awkward transition for a front office that already had fired its first manager (Dale Sveum) after two years.

Although some members of the Cubs organization have spoken with Renteria, sources said as late as Wednesday night the manager still had not spoken with Epstein during the Maddon process nor been notified of any potential change in his job

status (contrary to at least one published report Wednesday).

One rival team official called that situation “ugly.”

Renteria’s agent, Ken Solomon, who released a brief statement Monday from Renteria about focusing on team business, declined comment on the subject Wednesday.

“Nothing has changed since Rick’s statement,” Solomon said.

The circumstances surrounding’s Sveum’s dismissal last year were similar, with the Cubs making back-channel overtures to pending free agent manager Joe Girardi of the Yankees late in the 2013 season.

This time around, the Cubs are dealing with a high level of mutual interest – “I know he wants it bad,” a source close to Maddon said Friday – and a manager widely considered an ideal fit for where the Cubs are in their rebuilding process.

Like this Cubs team with several highly-ranked prospects starting to arrive in the big leagues, the 2006 Rays team Maddon joined also was a lastplace team with farm system brimming with high draft picks.

Two years later, the Rays were in the World Series, the first of five 90-win seasons under Maddon.

By BEN WALKER The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Madison Bumgarner pitched five innings of near-perfect relief and the San Francisco Giants held off the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, Wednesday night in Game 7 of the World Series for their third championship in five seasons.

With both starters chased early, this became a matchup of bullpens. And no one stood taller than the 6-foot5 Bumgarner, who added to his postseason legacy with a third victory this Series.

After center fielder Gregor Blanco misplayed Alex Gordon’s drive for a single and two-base error, Bumgarner got Salvador Perez to pop foul to third baseman Pablo Sandoval for the final out.

The Giants ended a Series streak that had seen home teams win the past nine Game 7s. San Francisco took this pairing of wild-card

teams after earning titles in 2012 and 2010.

Pitching on two days’ rest after his shutout in Game 5, Bumgarner entered in the fifth with a 3-2 lead. After giving up a leadoff single to Omar Infante, he shut down the Royals until Gordon’s hit.

Neither manager wanted to be caught waiting too long to make a move and Bruce Bochy pulled Tim Hudson in the second.

Jeremy Affeldt relieved and threw 21/3 scoreless innings in his longest stint since 2012.

Except those orphanages aren’t homes. And the staff isn’t family.

Ryan McCammack knows.

He has been there.

Two years ago, McCammack, pastor of preaching and vision at Gospel Life Church in Joliet, and his wife Tricia adopted an Ugandan baby. On Sunday, Gospel Life Church will host “Orphan Sunday,” The day will be devoted to adoption and fostering.

Members will share adoption stories and answer questions about their experiences and the process. The two morning groups and the evening discussion are open to the public.

“This is a way for us to focus on this issue that is often neglected,” McCammack said.

Despite that neglect, McCammack said the Bible is very clear on the topic.

“This is an area where the Bible clearly gives Christians instructions,” McCammack said, citing such scripture as James 1:27, which reads, “Religion that God our father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress.”

Christians, McCammack believes, have a responsibility to care for orphans and, of all people, should understand adoption.

I approve strongly of North’s two-heart response, showing a respectable suit and at least eight high-card points (or a terrific seven).

When South rebid two spades, North sensibly showed his second suit. (He was tempted to rebid two no-trump, but if they belonged in no-trump, he knew that South ought to be the declarer.) When North raised spades, South might have control-bid (cue-bid) five clubs, but he used Blackwood.

What should West have led against six spades? In general, do not lead a side suit bid by the opponents (unless you are strong in that suit, of course). That would suggest choosing a trump (which works perfectly) or the diamond ace (which is a disaster).

At the table, though, West led a highly debatable heart 10. South took dummy’s two winners, discarding his two minor-suit fours, then played a diamond to his jack. (He was confident that with queen-high diamonds, West would have led that suit.)

West won and played another heart, but South ruffed, cashed his diamond king, ruffed a diamond in the dummy, drew trumps, and claimed.

If that goes on for very long, the walls can get sticky. It gets harder for the air sac to open when new air enters the lungs.

Yawning opens up tiny airways and prevents them from collapsing. So the theory that yawning is a reflex that protects against atelectasis is reasonable. This could explain why yawning seems to occur when your breathing is shallow, such as when you’re tired or bored. However, we don’t know if the theory is true.

Here’s another theory: Yawning might be a warning system to alert you that you’re getting sleepy and you had better stay awake.

If you are driving a car, for example, and relaxing to the point where you might soon fall asleep, yawning might make you more conscious of the need to take a break. Yawning is associated with stretching of the muscles and joints and an increased heart rate. That may make you more alert.

Finally, yawning may be a sign of disease. Although rarely the first sign, excessive yawning has been observed among people with multiple sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and Parkinson’s disease.

To be clear, yawning is not usually a sign of disease.

It’s usually just a sign that you’re human.

Dear Doctor K: I get plenty of sleep. So why do I yawn all the time?

Dear reader: We all yawn frequently, more often in the early morning and late evening. Does it mean we’re tired? Bored? Short on oxygen? As common as it is, we know little for certain about yawning.

We do know that yawning does not always indicate a need for sleep. It is true that people often yawn as they get ready to retire for the night. But we also yawn when we first arise in the morning and at other times during the day.

Past theories about why we yawn centered on the assumption that it was a reflex in response to low oxygen or high carbon dioxide levels. That’s because breathing (which is what we do when we yawn) takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. When you yawn, you take in more air than with a normal breath. So it’s a reasonable theory that we yawn because we need more oxygen, or less carbon dioxide.

But reasonable theories often don’t prove true.

This particular theory lost favor after a study in which volunteers subjected to high oxygen levels did not yawn less, and after high carbon dioxide exposure did not yawn more.

Another theory of yawning is that it protects against a condition called atelectasis (at-al-EK-tas-is), which is the collapse of some of the lung’s air sacs.

The lungs are full of tiny little air sacs, but not all of them are filled with air. If an air sac remains without air, it’s like a little collapsed balloon. Instead of being
