Paving on Interstate 80 planned for Saturday JOLIET – State road crews plan to do pavement repairs on eastbound Interstate 80 between Houbolt Road and Larkin Avenue early Saturday if weather permits.

The repairs will close the right lane of I-80 from midnight until about 10 a.m.

Saturday, the Illinois Department of Transportation said in a news release.

This is the third weekend of repairs on the highway section, and additional closures may be required in the next few weeks to complete the work, IDOT said.

Joliet teacher contract includes pay increases New agreement covers 3 years

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Joliet Grade School District 86 teachers have negotiated a contract with wage increases of more than 3 percent.

The school board Wednesday approved the three-year agreement, which provides a 3.5 percent wage increase in the first year and 3.25 percent increases in the following two years.

The starting salary for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree for the current school year is $41,841.

The last contract, “which reflected difficult economic times” according to a district news release, was a two-year agreement that provided a 2 percent raise for teachers. The starting salary at that time was $41,223.

That agreement also for the first time stipulated that teachers pay a portion – 5 percent – of their health care insurance

premiums. That provision remains the same in the new contract, according to teachers union President Jeremy Poch.

The new settlement was reached after two “informal conversations” during the summer, Poch said. The union represents about 700 teachers.

“The process was much easier than in previous years,” Poch said. “The board has good people in place who are approachable. It was a pleasure to work with them on developing a fair and equitable settlement for the hardworking teachers of Joliet 86.”

Poch said the negotiating parties had looked at the average pay raises in surrounding districts with competitive pay and “reached a settlement at the higher end of the average.”

District Superintendent Charles Coleman said the district’s economic situation had improved enough to offer higher pay raises this time.

“It’s an excellent settlement for an outstanding team of educators,” he said.

The district now has 11,785 students.

This is the first time enrollment has dropped in the past eight years. In 2006, 10,250 students were enrolled in Joliet District 86 schools. That number grew steadily over the years, with 11,945 students enrolled last year.

The 160-student decline in enrollment, however, is less than what was forecast. The district had expected 195 fewer students this year.

Cannon attributed part of the drop to a registration process that now includes stricter requirements for parents to show proof of residency in order to enroll their children.

Coleman told the board that the trend of declining enrollment has been seen in other area districts for a several years, but Joliet has been, until now, an exception. Will County Take Back the Night renews annual call for end to violence

T

he lights dimmed Thursday from inside the Joliet Park District’s Multipurpose Center as the names of domestic abuse victims in Will County from the past decade were read aloud.

Briana Valle, Sharleatha Green and Joslyn Woods – all of whom died this year – were the last three names called on a list of 54 during the 18th annual Will County Take Back the Night march. Thursday’s event was held as part of a worldwide effort to fight domestic violence against women and children.

Alisha Bromfield, 21, of Plainfield was one of those on the list of names read aloud.

Bromfield was murdered by her manager, Brian Cooper, also of Plainfield, back in 2012 while the two were attending his sister’s wedding in Wisconsin. She was seven months pregnant at the time.

“I miss her talking to me about her baby and her plans for the future. I miss her asking me for my advice and my opinion. I miss being my daughter’s mother,” Bromfield’s mother, Sherry Anicich, said to a crowd of more than 300 seated in the bleachers.

Cooper’s first trial in 2013 ended with a mistrial by a hung jury, in part because of a state law used by defense lawyers who argued he was too drunk to intentionally strangle her.

It wasn’t until Anicich lobbied Wisconsin lawmakers to strike down the law that Cooper was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole.

Brian Cooper’s sister, Kellie Stryker, joined Anicich during Will County Take Back the Night. The 29-yearold told the crowd of her own battle growing up in a mentally and physically abusive home and how – after her brother’s first trial – she ended all contact with her family.

“I’m living proof that despite abuse, hardships and unperceivable tragedy,

fear cannot decide my fate,” Stryker said, who helped Anicich lobby legislators earlier this year for the law change.

Anicich told the crowd she believes her daughter’s murder could have been prevented if someone – Cooper’s employer, in particular – had spoken up about his behavior patterns and violent tendencies. Anicich filed a lawsuit against his employer, Home Depot, earlier this year. She urged the crowd to watch out for each other and not turn the other way.

“Notice red flags and do something about them. Go with your gut. Don’t tolerate bad behavior and don’t let others tolerate them either.

Young ladies here tonight, support your girlfriends,” Anicich said. “You need to lift each other up, not bring each other down. There’s so much sadness in life that we cannot control.”

Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow, who has been involved with Will County Take Back the Night since its inception 18 years ago, was honored with an award Thursday night. “[Will County Take Back the Night] works tirelessly to bring the public’s attention to violence against women,” he said.

Also present at the Will County Take Back the Night event were Alicia Guerrero

and Alejandro Valle, the parents of Briana Valle, the Romeoville teenager who was murdered earlier this year by her ex-boyfriend, Erick Maya. Maya was convicted last month.

Guerrero, who was holding a photo of Briana, and Alejandro Valle broke down in tears as their daughter’s name was read aloud of the list in her remembrance.

After Stryker and Anicich spoke, event participants took to the streets with orange balloons, marching down Jefferson Street in protest of violence against women.

All of Thursday night’s proceeds will go to local battered women’s shelters.

Stiff competition on medical marijuana Local police district gets state’s most growing center applications

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Competition for medical marijuana cultivation centers will be fierce in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties.

The state received 14 applications – the highest received in any police district – for cultivation centers in Illinois State Police District 5, according to figures released Thursday by the state. But only one can win out. Will, Grundy and Kendall counties make up ISP District 5.

The medical marijuana law only allows 21 growing center licenses statewide – one per police district – out of the 159 applicants vying to get into the business.

Will County Board Member Tom Weigel, who heads up the board’s Land Use and Development Committee,

said land and location may have attracted so many applicants to ISP District 5.

“I’m kind of surprised, but there’s plenty of land in Will County,” Weigel said.

“There’s a lot of interest here because of just our closeness to Chicago.”

It’s unclear how applications are split among the three counties.

Curt Paddock, director for the county’s Land Use Department, said five companies expressed interest in unincorporated Will County.

However, he couldn’t confirm whether any of those five companies applied to the state. Another two companies have approached the city of Joliet.

Weigel said the high interest shows County Board members made a “good decision” to not require special

use permits when zoning for growing centers.

The county did not want to impose too many restrictions. But there was a backlash when Wilton Township residents opposed a proposal in that area.

If unincorporated Will County is indeed chosen, Weigel said it will be a major win for the county.

“I understand they generate some taxes for the local municipality or taxing districts. There’s a large investment of several million dollars to set up such a facility,” Weigel said. “Right now, some of these areas are agricultural and hardly any taxes are being generated, so this would be a big increase for the schools and the different taxing bodies.”

In all, the state received about 370 applicants for cultivation centers or dispensaries. The state received a little more than 200 applications for dispensaries and is expected to grant up to 60 permits.

Ten applied for dispensary permits in Will County.

Statewide, there’s intense rivalry in some regions but little or none at all elsewhere.

For instance, there are no applicants vying for dispensary licenses in DeKalb County.

Meanwhile, in Evanston and Niles townships, where only one dispensary will be al-

lowed, 15 applicants want the business.

Numbers released Thursday show that some of the stiffest competition is in northern Illinois. In the two police districts in Cook County, there are nine applicants.

State House hopefuls debate education funding 2 candidates for 37th District seat share their views

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Candidates for the 37th Illinois House District had similar views of the problems that afflict state education spending and the pension system but differed in their solutions.

Republican candidate Margo McDermed and Democratic candidate Nichole Serbin – both vying for the 37th District state representative seat – debated school funding, testing and pensions at the Pipefitters 597 Union Hall in Mokena.

Lincoln-Way Education Association hosted the debate, which brought in dozens of attendees.

McDermed, of Mokena, is a Will County Board member who also served as a former Frankfort Township Clerk.

Serbin, of Mokena, runs a New Lenox disc jockey service and is a freelance political analyst.

The 37th District covers Lockport, New Lenox, Mokena, Frankfort, Orland Park and Tinley Park.

Each candidate was sent questions from the association in advance to answer for the audience. While the candidates came to similar conclusions on the state education funding, they differed on solutions to pension reform.

One of the questions regarded Senate Bill 16, which seeks to reform state education spending in way that accords more money to school districts with higher numbers of low-income students.

Both candidates came out against the bill. McDermed said not only would a high school district such as Lincoln-Way suffer but its feeder schools as well.

“There’s no reason why being good stewards of money, in other words, doing a lot with less money and having good student success rates, should result in receiving less state money,” she said.

Serbin said Lincoln-Way already has lost about $10 million in 10 years, which has resulted in frozen salaries and slashed programs. If the bill were to pass in its current form, the school district would lose about 21 percent of its state aid.

Both candidates also saw a need for reforming funding for schools in the state. McDermed advocated seeking “innovative solutions” that don’t result in tax increases or spending more money on failing schools.

“We’ve been sending more

money to poor districts and no outcomes have changed,” she said.

Serbin wanted fair funding for all schools in the state.

“In order for our state to be successful, we need a quality education available to all the students. … We basically need to stop the balance of inequities,” she said.

When asked about the state legislation to reform the pension system in Illinois, both candidates thought the measure was unconstitutional.

McDermed pointed to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund as a good alternate to the current pension system. However, Serbin said switching to a different type of retirement plan would come at a cost, leading to a “massive, massive tax hike.”

Arrest made near bar with car on fire

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A car was set on fire outside a Joliet bar and a man was arrested, although not for the fire.

Jorge A. Ortega, 35, of Crest Hill was arrested early Thursday on charges of domestic battery and criminal damage to property because of a smashed window on a car that later was set ablaze, police said.

It all started shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday when Joliet police were called to Malnar’s Tap, 1123 Clement St., because of a report of an incident outside the bar.

Police were told a woman was screaming inside a car while a man was pounding on the window, Lt. Ed Gregory said.

Police arrived and found Ortega intoxicated with a cut on his hand, Gregory said. Or-

tega told police a woman had hit him with a beer bottle and left. The woman, later determined to be the victim, was gone.

Police found a Honda Civic with a broken window, Gregory said, but, “no one would come forth to say he [Ortega] broke the car window, and the victim wasn’t there.”

Police were called back to Malnar’s shortly after midnight because the Honda Civic was engulfed in flames.

A 25-year-old woman was also there. There was evidence the woman had been battered and she told police where they could find Ortega, Gregory said. Police went to a nearby Clement Street house and arrested Ortega.

An investigation also determined the car fire was an arson. But, Gregory said, no witnesses have come forth to say how the car caught fire.

The district faces litigation from an incident during last year’s Cruise the Creek. A person died while riding in the bicycling event. And, in August, a 42-year-old Mokena man died on the same trail after swerving to avoid a jogger and passing a cyclist.

Preregistration ended noon Thursday, but same-day-registration will begin at noon Saturday, Kiran said.

The ride takes place on a 6-mile loop trail that winds through scenic woodlands, wetlands and prairie in the district’s Hickory Creek Preserve in New Lenox.

The event is open to all ages, but the ride is recommended for riders of at least 11 years of age, according to a district news release. All riders are urged to bring drinking water and wear safety helmets.

The event also features a festive fall gathering with entertainment, children’s activities, a petting zoo, pony rides, inflatables, s’mores and pumpkin painting until 4 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine, unless there is severe weather.

Food and beverages will be available to buy.

The district will make reasonable modifications to ensure everyone has an opportunity to enjoy district offerings.

NEW LENOX – The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Cruise the Creek biking event, set for this Saturday, has grown in popularity since it first began six years ago.

District officials have tallied nearly 1,400 preregistrants so far this year, up from the 1,100 participants last year and from 800 in 2008.

But with an increase in ridership, and two fatal accidents in less than a year that occurred along the event’s designated route, Hickory Creek Junction Trail, district officials are stepping up their safety measures.

“It’s a family-friendly ride, not a race. It’s meant to be a leisurely event,” said Laura Kiran, superintendent for the district’s public affairs office.

Participants this year will notice additional signs alerting users to dangerous curves, Kiran said. Yellow center strips will also be painted near blind spots and sharp curves so people know to slow down and

Retired Crystal Lawns Elementary Principal Kathy Baxter will be the grand marshal of Saturday’s parade. Baxter retired over the summer after 40 years at the school, the first 19 as a teacher. She was honored by the school district and the Plainfield Village Board for her service to the community.

The “Disney on Parade” themed parade is also longer than ever, with floats, trucks and walkers from 134 groups, businesses, governing districts and politicians running for office in the November elections.

Grundy board accepts administrator’s resignation

Vota said he felt Miller also breached her contract by not giving the county six months notice before resigning.

“She circumvented the process and did not follow direction,” Halpin said.

Moving forward, Severson said the administrator position will likely remain vacant until after the Nov. 4 general election when the new chairman and board will take action.

Miller said she will continue to help the county through the budget process and resolve ongoing projects. She also offered to work with the new administrator once the position is filled.

MORRIS – Grundy County said goodbye to another administrator this week, marking the fourth person to leave the position in just three years.

Heidi Miller tendered her resignation two weeks ago.

September was her fifth month on the job.

Miller said she decided to resign because she made a mistake as an administrator and “was not following county procedure.”

She said she could not continue if County Board members and leaders did not have faith in her as an administrator.

“It makes sense at that point to just step down,” Miller said Wednesday, following a special County Board meeting.

After a lengthy executive session, the board voted, 11-2, to accept Miller’s resignation as administrator and allow her to continue her job as Grundy County’s land use director, a title she held for many years before becoming administrator.

Ken Iverson, Eric Rasmusson, Deb Warning and Ann Gill were absent from the vote.

Board Chairman Ron Severson would not say exactly how Miller breached protocol, but said it involved “not following proper hiring procedure.”

“Basically, [the board] decided to demote her from administrator,” Severson said.

Her resignation was effective immediately and she will no longer receive the administrator salary. Other disci-

Nobel-winning physicist Perl dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS PALO ALTO, Calif. – Martin Perl, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist from Stanford University who discovered a subatomic particle known as the tau lepton, has died at age 87.

The university said the retired professor, one of two American scientists who shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1995, died at Stanford Hospital on Tuesday.

He was recognized for work he did during the 1970s at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, a federally funded laboratory where scientists investigate the tiniest pieces of nature.

At the time Perl discovered the tau lepton, many physicists doubted the particle that would turn out to be a heavyweight cousin of the electron existed. He eventually proved them wrong using a new kind of accelerator in which electrons and positrons course in opposite directions and collide.

“People wanted me to be cautious,” Perl recalled in a 2013 interview with Stanford staff. “We kept taking data, and the evidence kept coming in. Every month or so we would get another handful – 10 to 20 – of these funny events. I gave a lot of talks.

There would be all sorts of objections. ... We eventually eliminated every other explanation.”

In a 1995 interview with The Associated Press, Perl acknowledged that while his research defied easy explanation, he hoped that understanding the building blocks of matter would lead to advancements in fields such as alternative energy.

“We’re trying to get to simplest ideas of matter and energy. That could lead in the end to things that would help all sorts of fields,” he said. “If you don’t do basic research, in the end you won’t have a foundation for other discoveries.”

Born in New York City to Polish-immigrant parents in 1927, Perl earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University while studying under Nobel-winning physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi.

He worked at the University of Michigan until he came to Stanford in 1963 as its linear accelerator was being construction.

One of his four children, Joseph Perl, works as a software developer and researcher at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. He said his father kept coming to work in the lab and to trade ideas with colleagues for years after his official retirement.

“It was the one place in the whole world to be, to do what he wanted to do,” Joseph Perl said. “He always advocated that you should look at what the crowd is doing and go in a different direction.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The head of the Federal Aviation Administration will visit a regional control center sabotaged by a fire that shut down Chicago’s two international airports and snarled air traffic nationwide, the agency said Thursday.

Administrator Michael P. Huerta will visit the center in Aurora and meet with Illinois’ congressional delegation on Friday, a week after a contract employee started a fire in the basement telecommunications room before attempting to commit suicide by slashing his throat.

The fire caused widespread damage, and the FAA said it would replace the entire central communications network at the center.

Huerta has said crews are working around the clock to replace equipment, and he hopes to return the facility to full service by Oct. 13.

Although the center’s responsibilities have been transferred to centers in Cleveland, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Minneapolis, delays and cancellations have persisted. On Thursday, a combination of bad weather and lingering effects of the fire caused about 750 flight cancellations at O’Hare and Midway international airports, Chicago aviation officials said.

At the height of the travel misery last Friday, more than 2,000 flights in and out of the airports were canceled, causing a ripple effect that

Howard, who had access to the control center via a swipe card, entered around 5 a.m., and about 30 minutes later posted a suicide note on Facebook, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Minutes later, someone at the facility called 911 to report the fire. A relative who saw the Facebook post also alerted authorities. Paramedics followed a trail of blood past a gas can, two knives and a lighter and found the suspect slashing his throat, the complaint said.

Trader accused of manipulating commodity prices

CHICAGO – A New Jersey high-frequency trader was accused of manipulating commodity prices by sending false signals to the market and then executing trades within milliseconds to make huge profits, prosecutors said Thursday, in what they described as a firstof-its-kind prosecution.

Michael Coscia, 52, was indicted for illegally earning around $1.5 million through the Chicago-based CME Group – the world’s largest operator of futures exchanges – and European futures markets in 2011.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago said it’s the first case under major changes to federal commodities law in 2010, when Congress enacted the DoddFrank Wall Street reforms after the financial crisis.

High-frequency trading was the subject of Michael Lewis’ best-selling book “Flash Boys,” which chronicled how Wall Street traders sought profits and a jump on competitors through ever-faster computer systems down to fractions of a second. The practice has come under increasing scrutiny, with the FBI confirming earlier this year that it had been investigating such firms.

Holmes, 69, said he still has nightmares about being shocked and having a plastic bag put over his head by Burge in order to force a murder confession out of him. He spent 30 years in prison before being released.

Burge, 66, has never been criminally charged with torture, but he was convicted in 2010 of lying about it in a civil case.

Burge is serving a 4½-year sentence for lying about the torture in a civil case. He left the Federal Correctional Institute in Butner, North Carolina to serve the remainder of his time in a halfway house in Tampa.

He is scheduled to leave federal custody in February 2015.

Prosecutors appeal bond ruling in SIU threat case

EAST ST. LOUIS – Federal prosecutors are appealing a Chicago judge’s ruling to release pending trial a man accused of mailing threats of rapes, bombings and beheadings to Southern Illinois University’s Carbondale campus.

Magistrate Judge Susan Cox on Wednesday allowed 21-yearold Derrick Burns’ release but stayed it while prosecutors appealed. The government’s documents pressing for Burns to remain jailed as a potential threat are sealed. The judge says if her decision stands Burns would be released into his aunt’s care and has to wear an electronic monitor.

Burns is charged with eight felonies linked to what inves-

tigators say were threatening mailings sent over a year-long span in 2012 and last year.

Sears to raise cash through Canadian operations sale

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Sears, sorely in need of cash, is selling most of its stake in its Canadian unit to raise as much as $380 million.

The rights offering to shareholders for the majority of its 51 percent stake in Sears Canada Inc. will give the retailer some breathing room as it heads into the crucial holiday season.

The announcement Thursday is the last in a string of initiatives the company is undertaking to shore up finances. Sears said that it will evaluate its capital structure over the next six to 12 months and may take

further action to create more financial flexibility.

Chicago retirees must pay while awaiting ruling

CHICAGO – A federal appeals court is allowing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to proceed with rate increases on retired employees’ health insurance while the plan is challenged in court.

The retirees’ attorney, Clinton Krislov, told the Chicago Sun-Times on Thursday he’s disappointed the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied the motion for an injunction.

The court’s denial Tuesday means some retired city workers will see their insurance premiums climb significantly when rate increases take effect Jan. 1.

If many of the long-term unemployed are getting jobs again, it suggests that the Fed might keep rates ultra-low longer to try to fuel further hiring. On the other hand, if most aren’t being hired, it might show that even a strengthening economy with low rates is no longer helping much.

Levin, the IMF economist, thinks it shows there are lots more people who want additional work than the unemployment rate suggests. As a result, Levin argues, paychecks aren’t likely to rise anytime soon.

Some disagree. Richard Fisher, head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said last month that wages typically start rising once unemployment falls to the current 6.1 percent. He warned that wages may do so again, igniting faster inflation.

WASHINGTON – Just how healthy is the U.S. job market?

Despite steady hiring and falling unemployment, the question has provoked sharp debate and considerable uncertainty on the eve of the September jobs report.

Much of the uncertainty flows from a big question: Does today’s 6.1 percent unemployment rate, far below the 10 percent it hit in 2009, mean the job market is near full health? Or does the unemployment rate overstate the improvement?

The answers, whenever they come, could play a key role in when the Federal Reserve decides to finally raise interest rates.

“We’re kind of grasping at straws,” said Peter Cappelli, an economist at the Wharton Business School. “We’ve never seen a labor market quite like this.”

The government’s September jobs report, coming Friday, could shed some light on these questions. But it won’t settle them.

Jobs and unemployment remain near the top of voters’ list of most important issues, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll.

The unusual confinement order was imposed after the family failed to comply with a request not to leave their apartment, said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins.

Texas State Health Commissioner David Lakey said the order would help ensure the four can be closely watched, including checking them for fevers over the next three weeks.

“We didn’t have the confidence we would have been able to monitor them the way that we needed to,” he said.

lowed to receive visitors, officials said.

Authorities also were concerned about the cleanliness of the home and hired a cleaning service, Lakey said.

“The house conditions need to be improved,” he said.

A woman who lives in the apartment, Louise Troh, said she has been quarantined with her 13-year-old son and two nephews.

“Who wants to be locked up?” she said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Troh said she was waiting for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect a bag of the bed sheets and towels Thomas Eric Duncan used.

Visitors from the American Red Cross were seen Thursday bringing food to the apartment door. The North Texas Food Bank said it sent three days of cereal, tuna, produce and other supplies.

Apartment manager Sally Nuran said employees were power-washing sidewalks and scrubbing common areas, although she believed Duncan had not visited most of the complex in his short time there.

Elsewhere, Texas health officials expanded their efforts to contain the virus, reaching out to as many as 100 people who may have had direct contact with Duncan or someone close to him.

None of the people is showing symptoms, but health officials have educated them about Ebola and told them to notify medical workers if they begin to feel ill, said Erikka Neroes, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County Health and Human Services agency. The group will be monitored to see if anyone seeks medical care during the three weeks immediately after the time of contact, she said Thursday.

By DANIEL ESTRIN The Associated Press JERUSALEM – They moved under the cover of darkness, slipping into apartments in this east Jerusalem neighborhood in the middle of the night and changing the locks.

When the sun rose Tuesday, Arab residents of Silwan found Israeli security guards and young male volunteers hunkered down inside 25 apartment units in their impoverished neighborhood and an adjacent area – the biggest settler takeover since Jews began buying up properties in the volatile area two decades ago.

The organization that oversees Jewish settlement here calls them legal purchases in a hostile neighborhood, while Arabs and the international community see it as a nationalistic conquest in land Israel captured in 1967. And the practice has sparked yet another spat between Israel and

the U.S., months after recent Mideast peace efforts once again failed.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest condemned the occupation of the properties “by individuals who are associated with an organization whose agenda, by definition, stokes tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.”

That organization, the Elad Foundation, says it has settled hundreds of Jews amid an Arab population estimated at about 30,000 in an area it calls the City of David, where Jewish tradition holds King David established Jerusalem as Judaism’s central holy city.

The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem, home to the city’s most sensitive holy sites, as the capital of a future independent state. Israel vows all of Jerusalem will forever be Israel’s capital. Joining the court would let the Palestinians pursue war crimes charges against Israelis.

With peace talks going nowhere and Israeli settlements expanding, Riyad Mansour said the Palestinians have turned to the Security Council “to force Israel to negotiate in good faith the end of occupation within a time frame.”

He is only 13.

Federenko’s shy laugh and wisp of upper lip hair seem at odds with his bulky camouflage uniform as he explains his decision to sign up for the military academy. “This year I had this feeling of patriotism,” he said, “and I wanted to defend my country.”

In Ukraine, the government’s campaign against pro-Russian rebellion in the east has united people of all ages in a newfound patriotic fervor. Army ads dominate TV stations, war heroes are at the top of every party’s list for this month’s parliamentary election, and defense issues now lead the agenda.

Although many Ukrainians are ready to give a cease-fire called last month a chance, they see it only as a temporary fix and are digging in for years of confrontation – if not outright war – with Russia. President Petro Poroshenko has struggled to sell his deal with Russia and the separatists to a skeptical home audience.

“Solving the war in [the eastern regions of] Luhansk and Donetsk with the military alone is impossible,” he said in a recent TV interview.

Although Poroshenko said the “most dangerous part of the war” in the east has passed, fatal clashes continue, particularly at the government-held airport near the rebel stronghold of Donetsk; more than 20 people have been killed this week.

“Ukrainians are in theory in favor of restoring peace,” said Andriy Bychenko, the director of sociological services at Kiev’s Razumkov Center.

“But the majority is not sure that this peace will be stable and dependable.”

ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey’s parliament gave the government new powers Thursday to launch military incursions into Syria and Iraq, and to allow foreign forces to use its territory for possible operations against the Islamic State group.

The move opens the way for Turkey, a NATO member with a large and modern military, to play a more robust role in the U.S-led coalition against the Sunni militants.

However, Turkey has yet to define what that role might be.

The vote came as the extremists pressed their offensive against a beleaguered Kurdish town along Syria’s border with Turkey. The assault, which has forced some 160,000 Syrians to flee across the frontier in recent days, left the Kurdish militiamen

or to thwart threats from the Syrian regime. Thursday’s motion, which passed 298-98, expands those powers to address threats from the Islamic State militants who control a large cross-border swath of Iraq and Syria, in some cases right up to the Turkish border.

Asked what measures Turkey would take after the motion was approved, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz said: “Don’t expect any immediate steps.”

“The motion prepares the legal ground for possible interventions, but it is too early to say what those interventions will be,” said Dogu Ergil, a professor of political science and a columnist for Today’s Zaman newspaper.

The motion could let Iraqi Kurdish fighters use Turkey’s territory to safely cross into Syria to help Syrian Kurdish forces there, or permit the deployment of coalition forces’ drones, Ergil said.

Thumbs-up: to fighting back vs. domestic abuse The Herald-News Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs-up and thumbs-down: Thumbs-up: to Sherry Anicich of Plainfield for joining with Kellie Stryker to give a unified message, of no tolerance for domestic violence, at last night’s “Take Back the Night” rally.

In 2012, Stryker’s brother was sentenced for the murder of Anicich’s 21-year-old daughter, Alisha Bromfield, and Bromfield’s unborn child. For these two women to set aside turbulent and conflicting emotions in the face of such a tragedy and work together not only took courage and strength, it also proved that healing and hope are possible after tragedies.

Thumbs-down: to violators of handicap parking laws.

The city of Joliet, however, might give a bigger thumbs-down to parking scofflaws who take spaces reserved for people who need them. The city council is considering a hike in the fine for such violations to $500.

Thumbs-up: to local restaurateur Carmen Rossi for the upcoming opening of Juliet’s Tavern in downtown Joliet, which is a blend of classic Italian dining and a modern sports bar.

With an impressive portfolio of established Chicago restaurants, Rossi’s goal is to “create something distinctive and exceptional in downtown Joliet.” We love seeing local business owners investing in the downtown area with not only money but passion. Best of all, he welcomes competition, in order to create a more-vibrant downtown economy.

Thumbs-up: to the paleontologist and Wilmington resident Gina Wysocki and New Lenox Troop 49 Boy Scout Garrett Latham for working to restore the old Will County Poor Farm cemetery, which was overrun with prairie life and apple trees.

The weeds were cut down last week with the help of about 15 people, several weed wackers and hard work. The restoration effort also called for the creation of a concrete path and benches in the cemetery grounds. As Wysocki noted, those in the poor farm likely weren’t given proper burials, and no one comes to visit them.

Restoring the area is a small sign of respect all cemeteries – and those buried there – deserve.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR THE REAL ECONOMIC FACTS ABOUT FINANCIAL WOES To the Editor: The Donald Torrence letters to the editor (“Partisan ideology distorts reality” in the Aug. 24 edition and “Economic woes not from big government” in the Sept. 17 edition) contained inaccurate and misleading economic information. The financial collapse of 2008 was not due to elimination of the Glass-Steagall Act and deregulation. The Act was modified, not eliminated, and the action was bipartisan. The financial collapse was initiated by the home mortgage crisis caused by government forcing financial institutions to make irresponsible loans.

The irresponsible and corrupt actions of the quasi-government loan agencies Fannie May and Freddie Mac contributed to the problem.

The problem of “too big to fail” financial institutions was not solved and actually made worse by the new Dodd-Frank law. It also added regulations putting smaller institutions at

a disadvantage and increasing costs.

The real solution is to comply with the constitutional requirement for a limited federal government and get government out of the loan business.

The real problem with corporate taxes is our rate is higher than for other countries, and we tax money earned in other countries. This puts our companies at a disadvantage, forcing them to keep profits and expand jobs in other countries. It also encourages them to move their headquarters to other countries.

No other country is this stupid. We should lower corporate tax rates and eliminate loopholes, forcing companies to succeed based on their value to consumers and not their lobbyists and lawyers.

Statistics say liberal, not conservative, policies have hurt the middle class. Middle-class income dropped $2,000 in eight years under President G.W. Bush but dropped $5,000 in only four years under President Obama. Income inequality grew twice as fast under Obama as under

Bush. National Review reported incomes of poorest fifth have declined every year since 2008 when Obama took office. CNS News reported 11,472,000 Americans have left the workforce since 2008.

Several teams beating our expectations VIEWS Dick Goss The quote has stuck with me.

It was back in June that I visited with Lincoln-Way West third-year coach Dave Ernst during the University of St. Francis 7-on-7 Passing Jamboree at Memorial Stadium.

Knowing how many warriors the Warriors had lost from what was a special senior class, it seemed it was time to rebuild more than reload. But Ernst did not see it that way.

“We lost a lot, but we’re not poor,” he said.

So here we are, in Week 6 of the season, and West is 5-0 entering Friday night’s SouthWest Suburban Red showdown at Bradley.

Two sophomore quarterbacks, Dino Borrelli and Connor Lohman, have gotten the job done behind a good offensive line. Lineman Nick Trolian has led the way defensively.

The Warriors have been quarterfinalists in the state playoffs the last two seasons under Ernst. With as many starters from last year’s

team who had to be replaced, there was no way this would be the season West would take it a step further.

Except now, that sort of thinking is not a pipe dream.

Depending on the playoff draw the Warriors eventually get – whether in Class 5A or 6A – they indeed may be capable of something really special.

Ernst was right: They aren’t poor.

Based on results through Week 5, several teams in the area rank as pleasant surprises.

I would put Providence (5-0) in that category as the Celtics prepare for a Saturday date at Loyola.

Who among us thought the Celtics would be this good? Even with the quality receivers at his disposal, did anyone see quarterback Justin Hunniford completing 99 of his first 127 passes? And did anyone expect Providence’s run defense to be this dominating?

Joliet West (3-2) is another program that lost some important pieces through graduation. But what we did not know was how effective junior quarterback Alex Tibble would be. His quickness is an asset, but he has surprised most observers

are beginning to produce big offensive numbers, and the defense has been solid all along. If they stay healthy, they will be capable of another long playoff run.

While we’re discussing pleasant surprises, how about Lincoln-Way Central and Lemont?

The Knights (4-1), under Hud Venerable, were knocking on the door to the playoffs last season, so the fact they are one win away from qualifying is not shocking.

But they have been better than projected. Their game Friday night against Lincoln-Way North should be a great one.

Bret Kooi, who took Lockport to back-to-back Class 8A state titles a little more than a decade ago, has Lemont (5-0) flying high in his first season with the Indians, who were 3-6 in the down year of 2013.

Kooi said over the summer that he had a receiving corps as good or better than he had at Lockport in the state championship years.

He was not kidding. It will take a superb defense to slow down the Indians.

Tibble is one of the main reasons West is a strong candidate to make the playoffs for the first time regardless of how Friday’s game at Lincoln-Way East turns out.

He’s also a reason you feel this West team is capable of coming up with a big effort against the Griffins, much as the Tigers did last year.

Joliet Catholic, of course, is accustomed to success.

But before the season – and then after the 21-10 Week 1 loss to Providence – there

was a feeling this may be a down year for the Hilltoppers, at least by their standards.

For starters, there was no running back you could put in the same category as Josh Ferguson, Malin Jones, Ty Isaac or Mike Ivlow. And the depth in certain spots was such that injuries could be killers.

But Providence is looking better and better, and now JCA is 4-1 and has knocked off three of the many solid teams in the East Suburban Catholic. The Hilltoppers

LOCKPORT – After allowing one goal in its last seven matches, Lockport’s soccer team was upset Thursday about yielding a score in the 40th minute against Joliet Central.

But rather than getting down about a 1-1 score at the break instead of holding a lead, the Porters were determined to make sure the late goal didn’t come back to haunt them.

Jack Dilger collected his second goal of the day in the 53rd minute, and Lockport’s defense made sure the lead would stand as the Porters won a 2-1 SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue match over the Steelmen.

The Porters (9-3-2), who’ve won five straight and seven of their last eight outings, also found out they received the top seed in the Class 3A Sandburg Sectional tournament.

“The boys have shown pride in allowing one goal in seven games and made sure we’re defensively solid, so to give up that goal was frustrating,” Porters coach Chris Beal said.

“But it’s also a positive about the level that we’re at right now. Going forward, one of the things that is going to help us is that defensive solidity. Now that we’ve won some games,

Dilger said. “We started off he year a little shaky, and then we started working hard in practice, figuring some stuff out and moved some guys around.

We’ve started playing well as a team and connecting, so our confidence is going up.”

Shortly after Lockport grabbed the early lead, the Steelmen had a series of corner kicks by Jesus Sandoval; but Porters Angelo DeMarco, Jose Magallenas and Ray Navarro all got headers to clear loose balls out of harm’s way.

Late in the first half, Porters keeper Jacob Krawczyk halted a short try from Jorge Vega and a liner by Guillermo Escobar. But thanks to the efforts of defenders Jack Brassil, Chris Monte, Brian Moore, Matt Cavanaugh and Navarro, Central rarely threatened after that.

“We’ve played great defense all year, but it’s been clicking in the last few games,” Moore said. “It definitely stinks to give up a goal like we did, but we regrouped and got it back together. All of us on the defense get along really well, we have speed on the outside, and great captains who kind of hold down the fort. We had a rough start to the season, but we’ve been on a roll lately – and it’s a lot more fun when you’re winning.”

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Trailing by one point in the second game, Marist’s Lizzie Zaleski stepped up to serve and silenced the always-noisy Joliet Catholic volleyball crowd Thursday in the East Suburban Catholic Conference rivalry matchup.

Marist had made eight errors in the first 15 points of the second game. Zaleski reversed the game momentum by serving three aces; and by the end of her serving run, the RedHawks led, 18-13. The tough serve kept the Angels out of system and helped lead to Marist’s win, 25-19, 25-20.

Joliet Catholic coach Christine Scheibe was forced to call a timeout when the Angels (77, 2-2) trailed, 13-12. The next time she called a timeout, the score was 21-13.

“We have a tendency when

we make one mistake to turn it to two,” Scheibe said. “Zaleski went back there and had a couple of nice serves, and we weren’t able to run our offense, and we got into a rut.

Her serves back there threw us off a little bit. I give credit to their outsides. They were using our hands very well and tooling off the block.”

JCA also had success tooling the block and off combination plays in serve receive.

Mary Murphy scored two of her five kills off serve receive when she passed from one side of the court and approached to hit the ball in the middle of the court.

In critical parts of the game when both defenses would not let a ball drop, the Angels successfully tooled the block for the point.

tem plays. Trailing 16-12 in the first game, Marist (14-4, 5-0) sent over two free balls, and JCA could not execute on either play. But the RedHawks did not make it easy for them to score. Libero Allyssa Rizzo alone had 21 digs for the night.

Joliet Catholic fought to come back in the second.

Madeline Grimm, who had five kills, took her hardest swings of the night and buried two balls off serve receive.

Murphy got an overpass kill to

keep the Angels alive 24-20, but Marist closed the game with a stuff block.

“I thought the first game was very competitive – we were right there with them,” Murphy said. “The second we started off great. I was thinking, ‘This is it, we’re taking them to three, we’re going to win this game.’ Then we kind of got into that slump, and that’s what killed us.

“I thought we fought very hard in the end. We were down, 23-13, or something like that, and we came back and it was 25-20. I think once we can break ourselves from those slumps and only keep ourselves to one mistake instead of seven mistakes in a row, we are definitely going to beat top-tier teams like that [Marist].”

Marist also shares respect for one of its conference rivals.

“JCA is a very tough pro-

gram, always,” Marist coach Julie Hopkins said. “We knew that we were going to have to fight for every point, so we did.

They’re going to have hitters, but we have to focus on our side: discipline block, keeping focus, earning points in each rotation. And the girls did that.”

Marist’s Zaleski ended the night with 32 assists and four aces, and Anne Marie Stifter and Emily Graff each contributed 10 kills. Mallory Krzysciak led the Angels defense with 10 digs. Megan Melone and Murphy had nine and seven assists, respectively.

“We were aggressive. We were relentless,” Murphy said. “We went after them, and we knew going into this game that’s what we were going to have to do. Everyone was swinging hard and giving it our all. Aggressiveness is what kept us in the game.”

A Plainfield team built for Hall of Fame

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – It’s been said there’s a thin line between love and hate.

Coach Mark Krusz and the Plainfield High School girls basketball team walked that line every day during the 200001 season.

“I’ve had many of them come back and tell me how much they hated me when they were in school,” Krusz said. “In the same breath, they also say they had a great experience.”

The end result was a historic season and a spot in the Plainfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction is set for Saturday when the homecoming parade, alumni tea and football game between Plainfield Central and North are scheduled.

Plainfield went 27-4 that season, reaching the Class AA Lockport sectional final before losing to state runner-up

Neuqua Valley, 63-51.

“That was the last year we were all one school,” said Krusz, now the athletic director at Sandburg. “The year after, I think Plainfield South opened.

So that was the last year we were one team in the community.”

All 12 players competed in multiple sports. Some played soccer, track and field or tennis. One was the district’s first four-sport athlete: Kristen Johnston, who used a split schedule to compete in cross country, basketball, softball and track.

“We had a lot of two-, threeand a four-sport athletes on that team,” Krusz said.

“Heather Furr went downstate in track and tennis, Karin Olson did it in track, Rachel Sillar did it in track, as well as other girls in other sports.

They had success playing multiple sports. That’s rare. It was a different time.”

Furr went on to play quarterback and become a two-time league MVP for the Chicago

Bliss in the Legends Football League, formerly the Lingerie Football League.

Krusz saw the Wildcats’ potential during his first season as they finished 16-10 in 19992000.

“I have to give the parents a lot of credit,” Krusz said. “By the time I was hired [in 1999], that chemistry and drive was already there. They had been playing together for a long time. You don’t see that much any more.”

However, it was up to Krusz to tap into that potential.

“Their ability to work extremely hard helped them distance themselves from a lot of other teams,” Krusz said.

“They went through a college program that season and accepted the challenge.”

A rough start to the season could have crushed their resolve. However, three losses at the rugged Hinsdale South Thanksgiving Tournament fueled the Wildcats.

“We were 27-4, and three losses were at the Hinsdale

South Tournament,” Krusz said. “We went on a 22-game win streak and went undefeated in the conference.”

Plainfield was relentless, employing a full-court, pressure defense and balance on offense.

“Our leading scorer, Rachel Sillar [Swenson], averaged 11.9, and our fifth starter averaged 9.2,” Krusz said. “There was a balance there you don’t see very often. It was kind of embarrassing at the conference meeting because I couldn’t pick from the five. They said, ‘You’re right. Put all five on [the All-SPC team].’ ” The all-conference five included Sillar, Furr, Johnston, Olson and Kristin Schutt.

Those five – along with Meagan Peck, Aubrey Gawlik, Stacey Smith (Carpenter), Erin Spika (White), Lindsey Lukaszka (Spokas) and twins Diane and Danielle Suhajda (Cooling) – lifted Plainfield to a 14-0 mark in the Suburban Prairie Conference, its own Christmas Tournament cham-

pionship and the program’s second regional title after beating Waubonsie Valley, 55-37.

The atmosphere at Lockport for the sectional final against Neuqua Valley was electric. “[District 202 icons] Kathy Kazmar and Bess Eichelberger had their faces painted, the parents and kids had signs, and everybody was so into the game. It was a special atmosphere for the whole community,” Krusz said. “It was really neat to see. It was a memorable moment for sure.”

Although the Wildcats’ unforgettable season ended that night, the memories will live for generations.

“It’s something to look back on and relish,” Krusz said. “There aren’t very many teams in the Hall of Fame, so it’s great for the girls to get recognized, and they realize how special that season was.

It’s great to see other people feel that was a special season.

They will hold on that feeling for a lifetime.”

Cruz, Hardy HRs carry the Orioles past Tigers

By DAVID GINSBURG The Associated Press BALTIMORE – Nelson Cruz and the Baltimore Orioles had the good fortune of avoiding Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer during the regular season.

Or maybe it was the other way around.

In his 2014 debut against the hard-hitting Orioles, Scherzer found out quickly that a poor pitch can go a long way – in the other direction.

Cruz and J.J. Hardy homered, and Baltimore hammered out 12 hits in defeating Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers 12-3 Thursday in the opener of their AL Division Series.

“I just left too many pitches up,” Scherzer said. “This is a great-hitting ballclub. You give them a chance to extend their arms, they can really hit it.”

Jonathan Schoop and Alejandro De Aza each had two

hits and two RBIs for the Orioles, who turned a close game into a rout with an eight-run eighth inning against Scherzer and three ineffective relievers.

The 12 runs set a postseason record for Baltimore, making its second playoff appearance since 1997.

Game 2 of the best-of-five series is Friday at Camden Yards. Justin Verlander, the second of three straight Cy Young winners the Orioles will face, is set to go against left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.

Verlander must avoid the mistakes made by Scherzer, who allowed five runs and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings. The right-hander was 18-5 during the regular season, but in this one he was burned by the long ball and outpitched by the Orioles.

“I’ve got to find a way to get the ball down,” Scherzer said.

“I wasn’t quite able to do that tonight, and I paid for it.”

Earning a living in theater Former Crest Hill resident performing in Broadway musicals

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Former Crest Hill resident Arbender Robinson said he is the first black understudy for the character Marius in the current Broadway production of “Les Miserables.”

Robinson said he felt nervous about the audience’s reaction to it, but he wasted a good worry.

“It worked really, really well,” Robinson said.

He had felt the same way as the understudy for Prince Eric in the original cast of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” which audiences also seemed to enjoy, Robinson said. Yet for all his groundbreaking roles – along with working as a paid actor since high school – Robinson initially considered a law career.

A fan of courtroom drama TV shows, Robinson figured he could combine his passion for theater with helping people with their legal problems.

“It seemed like the smart thing to do,” Robinson said.

But Robinson – who participated in Lockport Township High School theater productions and began working as an actor while still a high school senior – realized by college he actually could earn his living in theater, never dreaming that would mean Broadway.

“I thought I would be doing avant-garde, experimental theater,” Robinson said.

Robinson credits his choir teacher at LTHS for making sure Robinson knew about area audition opportunities where Robinson could further develop his talent.

Eventually, Robinson was working at Great America in Gurnee as a performer and traveling around the country demonstrating solos for America Sings! He also did the production readings for a play about the life of black opera singer Marion Anderson.

“I did not do the run because I was in college,” Robinson said, “but I did get paid for the entire process.”

When he majored in theater and minored in dance at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Robinson said he was the only black student in the theater department of a small

Robinson knew he needed to work while attending college, and his parents could not afford to help him. Robinson also wanted more training than school alone could give him, he said.

So Robinson looked up “theater” in the local telephone books, called the venues and said, “Hey I want to audition for your show.” Some theaters paid more and some paid less, but Robinson said he always received payment for his services.

“And I cashed all the checks,” he said.

After finishing a five-year program in four years and graduating in 1998, Robinson said he worked for a succession of regional theaters until Walt Disney World in Florida hired him as a Voices of Liberty tenor, he said. While in Florida, Robinson also worked special events at Universal Studios.

When the Disney contract ended, Robinson called a friend who lived in New York and asked if he could move in and sleep on the couch. That was 2004. Soon afterward, Robinson auditioned for Broadway’s “Hairspray” and became part of that ensemble for three years, he said.

“It was a small role, but everyone on Broadway was to understudy – or cover – one of the principal roles,” Robinson said. “I was the understudy for Seaweed.”

From there – in 2007 – Robinson was in the ensemble of “Little Mermaid” and was the cover for Prince Eric. Robinson also has appeared in “The Lion King,” “Hair,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Ragtime” and part of the original cast of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”

A high point for Robinson was appearing in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire (2009), since Robinson had attended many productions there with the LTHS choir.

“I felt my career had come full circle,” Robinson said.

In addition to acting, Robinson said he is constantly teaching master classes, mostly for universities and theater groups. Anytime he talks to youth, Robinson reassures them the theater world still is accessible.

At age 37, and now that Robinson has met his theater goals, he’d like to transition into acting for film and television in Hollywood. But for now, Connecticut – not New York – is home, as it reminds Robinson of Crest Hill, he said.

“New York City is too busy for me,” Robinson said. “I still need birds and animals and trails to walk on and ponds and cornfields.”

LWHS high school bands busy learning new songs THE HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – The four high school bands at Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North are required to learn and memorize a half dozen tunes, including a chorale, parade song, school fight song, “The Star-Spangled Banner” and a variety of tunes that are played during football games and at marching band competitions.

The award-winning Lincoln-Way West Marching Warriors learned a new music program. Students practiced eight to 12 hours a

day in the summer. Parents reinforced the importance of practice, dropping off students each day and taking turns manning the water jugs so students stayed hydrated throughout the day.

The Lincoln-Way West 2014 drum major is Charlie Pavlik, his second year in the leadership position. The visual design is by Michael Lentz.

Both were hired by the band boosters for that purpose.

The Lincoln-Way East Marching Griffins also put in long hours over the summer preparing for their 2014 marching season, which includes band shows, parades and competitions. They were

in band camp from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 through 8, practicing both inside and outside on the stadium field.

Bert Johnson is the director of bands and music department chairman. He is assisted by Brian Geary and Angelo Makropoulos.

The Lincoln-Way East Marching Griffins 2014 drum majors are seniors Sarah Bortscheller and Jake Sons, both of Mokena. Bortscheller said the band has a large freshman class this year.

The community can see the four high school marching bands perform during the halftime of the schools’ home football games.

Elwood to get interpretative ‘shadow statue’ for Route 66 THE HERALD-NEWS ELWOOD – A new series of interpretive statues and corresponding wayside panels are being installed in nine Route 66 communities.

The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway coordinated the project, which was funded through grants from the Federal Highway Administration’s National Scenic Byway Program and the Illinois Office of Tourism.

The “shadow statues” are so nicknamed because they

are two-dimensional iron statues depicting famous scenes from the history of Route 66 in Illinois. One statue will be in Elwood. That statue, “Rosie the Riveter,” is the symbol of the female worker during WWII at the Elwood Arsenal, two massive plants that employed 20,000 workers making bombs and shells.

It is great to get twice the money for one piece of work. At the bridge table, as we saw yesterday, that is sometimes possible in the bidding. I pointed out that a jumpshift response by a passed hand is fit-showing: length in that suit and partner’s suit.

That was in an uncontested auction. When the opponents sail in, I like to use fit-jumps even by an unpassed hand. I jump as high as I am willing to drive the auction.

In this deal, after South opens one diamond and West overcalls one heart, North jumps to two spades, showing a limited hand with five spades and four-plus diamonds. (With a stronger hand, North could jump to three spades.)

The auction then proceeds to five diamonds by South.

West leads the heart ace and shifts to his trump. East wins and plays a club. How should South continue after guessing well to win with his club ace?

Declarer needs three dummy entries: one to take the spade finesse, one to ruff out East’s spade king, and one to reach the established spade winners.

Those entries are a heart ruff, the diamond queen and the diamond six – did you see the necessity for South not to play his diamond five at trick two? Then you can bring home the contract with four spades, five diamonds, one club and the heart ruff.

Note that if North initially responds one spade, East would jump to four hearts and leave both North and South wondering what to do.

Dear Abby: I was wondering if you could help me out with a co-worker who is constantly on her phone.

Four, five, sometimes eight times a day she is making and accepting personal calls.

It’s very distracting to the rest of the office. When she’s not at her desk, it’s then my responsibility to cover for her.

I would like to find a polite way to say “these phone calls can be made after hours.” I do NOT want to ruffle any feathers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. – TOO CHICKEN TO TALK Dear Too Chicken: The company’s policy on personal calls during business hours should be a part of the employee handbook. If it isn’t, it should be brought to the attention of your employer or supervisor so it can be included when the handbook is updated.

Ideally, the person to speak to your co-worker about this would be your boss. Because these calls are distracting the other employees, your boss should be made aware of it so he or she can deal with it.

Dear Abby: My father is dating a woman who is not only my ex-boyfriend’s mother, but also the woman he cheated on my mother with and left her for. I don’t want to be around her and have told my father this, but he doesn’t accept or respect my feelings. Being around them causes stress on my marriage because my husband doesn’t want to be around her either, and we don’t want her around our children.

This is causing so much stress that at times I’m afraid it could end our marriage. When I try to talk to Dad about this, he acts like there is no reason for me to be uncomfortable and blames my husband for these feelings. It’s like he completely denies that there is any way I could feel the way I do, even though she has brought nothing but negativity into my life.

I don’t know what to do. I want to still have a relationship with my dad, but my marriage comes before this.

How can I keep both? – IN THE MIDDLE IN PENSACOLA Dear In the Middle: Your father refuses to acknowledge your feelings because he sees you only as an extension of himself. Your opinions “surely” must match his own, and if they don’t, then they must have been planted there by someone else. In his mind, he and his lady friend have done nothing wrong, so how could you possibly object?

That you could have a moral compass that points in a different direction is not on his radar.

Because your dad insists on imposing this woman on your family, recognize that you probably can’t have one without the other. That will mean seeing your father far less than you would like, and away from your
