FRANKFORT – Two students were taken into police custody Wednesday after threats to attack Lincoln-Way East High School were posted online.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the FBI notified deputies about 6 p.m. Tuesday that the agency had received a tip about someone posting online that they would “blow up and shoot up the school.”

Hoffmeyer did not identify where the threat was posted but said the social media website was not as well-known as Facebook or Twitter.

Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley said the school was notified early Tuesday evening by a concerned citizen who saw the threat online.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with school administrators,

conducted a search of the high school and nothing suspicious was found, according to Hoffmeyer.

Sheriff’s police matched information from the account from which the threat was posted to a 15-year-old Frankfort boy who is a sophomore at the high school.

“He and his parents were interviewed by detectives and FBI agents. They cooperated fully and allowed us to search the home. No guns or explosives were found,” Hoffmeyer said.

Investigators believed someone used the teen’s identity to make the threats and were seeking the Internet protocol address the post was sent from.

About noon Wednesday, two 15-year-old boys were taken into custody while on the Lincoln-Way West campus and questioned at the police station, Hoffmeyer said.

“They both made statements indicating they’d posted

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmediacom JOLIET – A Joliet City Council committee decided this week to keep the fine for handicap parking violations at $500, although the city has been slow to enforce the higher penalty set this year.

The Joliet City Council a year ago voted to double the standard fine for handicap parking violations to $500.

One councilwoman recently asked that the $500 fine be reconsidered while the city is making some changes to its ordinance regulating handicap parking.

The council’s Land Use and Legislative Committee decided Tuesday to keep the fine at $500 while approving other changes to the ordinance.

“We’re not going to change it again,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said at the meeting.

“The bottom line is $500. If you can’t afford it, don’t park there.”

However, neighborhood advocate John Sheridan told the committee that the $500 fine is

not being enforced.

“It was almost like a meaningless, passed ordinance,” Sheridan said. “You’ve got to do something. It can’t be on the books and you do nothing.”

Only a handful of handicap parking signs list the fine for violations at $500. Most of the signs still list the old $250 fine.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said he believed the city still could impose the $500 fine even at spots where the sign posts the fine at $250. He said some police, but not all, issue tickets with $500 fines.

He recommend that new signs list $500 as a minimum fine.

State law allows fines for handicap parking violations as high as $2,500 for repeat offenders, Shanahan said. The new city ordinance will delineate all the fines allowed by the state.

Only about five or six businesses now have signs that list the handicap parking fine at $500, said Dave Mackley, director of the city’s Building and Inspectional Services Division.

“The last time the fine was changed from $100 to $250 it

took staff three years to get full compliance,” Mackley said.

He said the process could be sped up by providing stickers listing the $500 fine that could be put on old signs. But Mackley predicted “it will take a good couple of years” to get all signs switched to the $500 notice.

Meanwhile, advocates for people with disabilities may take a greater role in reporting instances of handicap parking violations when they see them, Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said.

“They have put together a group to help us monitor those spaces,” Gavin said Wednesday.

Gavin had asked the city to reconsider the $500 penalty, even though she had urged the higher fine last year.

Gavin said that she thought the $500 fine might be a “hardship” for first offenders. Told that the committee wanted to stick at $500, she said, “I can live with that, and I know my advocates for accessibility will be pleased.”

An email from Lincoln-Way District 210 notifying parents of the situation stated a fake social media account was created using the logo of a Chicago TV station that stated there was an incident at East and student safety was threatened.

Hoffmeyer said investigators believe the fake news site is related to the threat posted Tuesday.

Extra Will County sheriff’s deputies were assigned Wednesday to Lincoln-Way East at the request of school administrators, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

“We’re continuing to work with Will County at this time,” Tingley said.

The district now is awaiting the outcome of the investigation, Tingley said, adding that increased security will continue at East until the issue is resolved.

Diocese of Joliet’s schools struggle while Will County’s ‘relatively more stable’

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The story of enrollment at Catholic schools within the Diocese of Joliet is a mixed bag, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Joliet John Belmonte said.

Several weeks ago, Catholic school students, teachers and parents in the diocese marched to raise awareness of about 5,000 empty classroom seats – about 400 more than last year – and the availability of financial scholarships.

But enrollment has been “relatively more stable” in Will County than in DuPage County, Belmonte said.

“On the one hand, you do have headwinds that the [Joliet] diocese faces that all Catholic schools face but a lot of programs we’ve made has met good results, so it’s a mixed bag,” he said.

Increasing the number of students within Catholic schools has been a challenge for the Joliet diocese but church officials have been meeting it by marketing the schools more, raising awareness of financial needs and recruiting more families.

As families struggle to afford tuition costs to send their children to Catholic schools, a Joliet nonprofit that works with the diocese has focused on increasing the amount it gives out in scholarships to help put more students in the classrooms.

Struggling enrollment

The Joliet diocese has 21 schools in Will County – six in Joliet – and 32 schools in DuPage County, along with schools in Grundy and Kendall counties. Of the schools, one-third are at full capacity, one-third are close to capacity and one-third are under capacity, Belmonte said.

The schools with declining enrollment have been in DuPage County, where there is an aging demographic.

“Will County has been a little bit different because we have been able to do Latino student recruitment there,” he said.

Because there is a growing Latino population in Will County, diocesan officials have adjusted their recruitment strategies to encourage the enrollment of more Latino students. Joliet diocesan schools saw a 40 percent increase in Latino students at the elementary level between 2010 and 2014.

Belmonte said enrollment has always been an issue for diocesan schools as it has with Catholic schools nationwide.

Since the 2004-05 academic year for Catholic schools nationwide, there has been an

For Joliet diocesan schools, enrollment was 19,500 last year and schools have a capacity for 24,000 students.

Belmonte said some of the

factors involved for decreasing enrollment include aging demographics, families struggling from the recession and shifting populations.

Financial assistance

The Catholic Education Foundation has been working with the Joliet diocese to raise funds for scholarships and other needs. Since 1996, when the foundation began, more than $16 million in need-based scholarships was awarded to 18,000 students in all grade levels.

But the amount it is raising is not enough. Joe Langenderfer, CEF executive director, said the foundation sees 3,400 students on average who apply for scholarships but the CEF can only award 1,600

based on its funding, which has been increasing slightly every year to about $2 million this year.

Langenderfer said at the grade school level, scholarships usually cover between $700 and $1,500 in tuition costs, which is about $4,000.

At the high school level, the most a child receives in scholarships is $1,000 to cover a tuition cost of $10,000, he said.

He said the foundation would like to raise more money because “it’s a superior education.”

“We’re producing superior church and business leaders.

There is a return in investment and that is the message I try to get out,” Langenderfer said.

The Rialto board on Wednesday approved a contract for a construction manager on the contract. But the $26,895 contract with R. Berti Building Solutions of Crest Hill is on hold until money is available.

“The construction manager will have the responsibility of putting the bid documents together once we have the resources,” Rialto General Manager Randy Green said.

“I have no available funds to commit to the project, so I have no timetable.”

Green explained the situation when answering a question from one of several Joliet residents who attend Rialto meetings regularly since a marquee controversy erupted late last year.

But a public uprising against the design of the new marquee eventually led to the project being stopped with the sign in mid-construction and the donor taking back his $350,000.

Now, the Rialto is looking

for another donor or some source of revenue to pay for marquee renovations.

The Rialto board has agreed to keep the existing marquee with renovations while updating it with digital lighting and messaging.

the renovation project or set a number for how big a donation the Rialto is seeking. In June, he said one estimate put the electronic renovations for the existing marquee at more than $40,000. The Rialto also has spent about $200,000 on the unfinished marquee.

Green said the Rialto theater itself cannot be sold.

But Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the legal name for the agency that controls the Rialto and other properties downtown, received authority through state legislation several years ago to sell two neighboring office buildings.

Green said an appraisal was done in 2007 before the recession changed the real estate market.

“We have to look at what the value is and what the market is today,” he said.

Joliet Area Community Hospice board names new CEO

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Area Community Hospice Board of Directors has named a permanent CEO to fill the organization’s top role vacated earlier this year by former CEO Rick Kasper.

The board voted Oct. 12 Mary to select inter- Sheehan im CEO Mary Sheehan for the position.

Owning her own consulting firm and working with several Illinois hospices since 2012 has helped prepare

for this role, she said.

“It gave me a broad view of the challenges faced by different hospices, different staff and different communities,” she said.

Sheehan said Wednesday her goals will be to improve the patient referral process and access to care, grow the organization’s clientele base and educate the community about JACH’s services.

Board President Carolyn Dystrup said in a news release she is pleased for Sheehan to fill the leadership role.

“We observed her enthusiasm and thoroughness in assessing and approaching all aspects of hospice care and services,” Dystrup said. “Not only has Mary been focusing

on increasing admissions and length of stay, she has also identified areas for improvement and cost savings.”

Past experience

Sheehan brings three decades of experience as a hospice nurse and administrator, having entered the field in the 1980s when the hospice movement started to gain momentum, she said.

“I’m a nurse. My training was in oncology. I watched patients die and not die well. I knew there had to be a better way,” she said.

During Sheehan’s 16-year career at Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter in Glenview, Sheehan’s leadership skills helped eventually

move her up the ranks from coordinator of quality assurance to president and CEO. Sheehan is joining the JACH staff during trying financial times at the state level. Medicaid reimbursement payments from Illinois are lagging 10 months behind schedule, she said, so the nonprofit has resorted to using cash reserves during the state’s budget impasse, which began in July.

“Our payments have slowed down tremendously,” she said. “The government believes in hospice. We just need to pass a budget.”

The new CEO’s other priority is to streamline operations and improve efficiencies within the organization,

she said.

Outgoing administrators

Sheehan declined to provide her annual salary as new CEO. During Kasper’s time in the position, he earned $111,157, plus $24,987 in additional compensation, according to the JACH’s 990 form from 2014. The 990 form is an annual report that certain federally tax-exempt organizations must file with the IRS. Two other administrators have left JACH over the last six months. Dr. Ray Orenic, the former medical director, left in April. He was replaced

by Dr. J.D. Wright.

Will County executive addresses Joliet Chamber Walsh Sr. says invest in roads and business will follow

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. highlighted the region’s ongoing challenges and successes during Wednesday’s Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry luncheon.

Addressing the city’s business community at the Clarion Hotel & Convention Center in Joliet, Walsh said county officials remain focused on the region’s transformation from an agricultural and manufacturing stronghold to the Midwest’s transportation hub that caters to a global economy.

He noted how businesses such as IKEA and Amazon have chosen Will County because of its proximity to the Joliet and Elwood intermodal facilities.

But balancing capital priorities with limited funds remains a challenge as the county pursues a new Will County courthouse in downtown Joliet and

other much-needed capital projects aimed at relieving traffic congestion.

“As business leaders, all of us understand the importance of sound transportation infrastructure to move your goods to market,” Walsh said. “We are currently in the midst of our 2016 budget and there has been much discussion about protecting our [Regional Transit Authority] funding.”

Walsh stressed the need to invest in roads to help fuel future business growth, as County Board members continue to debate the use of RTA funds to help pay off bonds used to build a new $140 million to $200 million courthouse at Ottawa and Jefferson streets.

“As the world’s largest inland port, we understand the critical importance of modern transportation infrastructure to our future. There are several regional projects that will have significant impact on our transportation needs,” Walsh said.

James Roolf, president of the Joliet Banking Center at First Midwest Bank, commended Walsh for maintaining a $46 million cash reserves fund.

“There aren’t many counties that can boast that,” Roolf said.

Walsh said the county is in good shape, but is “bracing for the worse” in the event the state withholds the Local Govern-

ment Distributive Fund, which is local governments’ share of income taxes.

“We are definitely strong believers in the fact that hopefully the funds are not going to be seized. I’ve had commitments from the Senate down there that we won’t see that happen,” Walsh said. “But it’s still an issue. We are bracing ourselves for what possibly could be the worst, but I don’t think we’ll need it. It’s just good to have a rainy day fund.”

Minooka Village Board approves safety measures, services

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka village trustees on Tuesday night approved two resolutions that aim to create a safer work environment in the village.

Cameras will be installed in the foyers of Village Hall, as well as common areas such as the board and community rooms. Cameras also will be installed in the parking lot. All members present voted in favor; Trustee Rudy Martin was absent.

Village Administrator Dan Duffy said the measure will bring a higher level of security to the municipal building, both inside and out, and will provide a record of transactions between staff and the public.

Approval was given to enter into a contract with LaForce Inc. for the camera installation at a cost of $19,683. Minooka already utilizes LaForce Inc. for the building’s security door system.

In a separate matter, a contract with Rockwell Automation was approved for a lockout/tagout, or LOTO, program at a cost of $39,400.

LOTO programs train and educate employees on controlling hazardous energy during servicing and maintenance of machinery and equipment, which can seriously injure or kill a worker from unexpected startup or release of stored energy.

LOTO programs are common in industrial settings and are moving into municipalities, Duffy said.

Contracting out utility locates

Another contract approval means the village now can begin contracting with USIC to perform underground utility locate services, freeing up village public works employees to focus on other duties. Each locate performed by USIC will cost $17 and include water, sewer, gas, electric and street lighting. The village performed

2,000 locates last year. By freeing up employee time, Minooka stands to save $20,000 to $30,000 a year, Duffy said.

Other business

• Trustees approved three annual payments, beginning this year, to pay the village’s share of improvements on Holt Road back to Seward Township. Both the village and the township own portions of Holt Road, Duffy said. The township paid to have the project completed, and Minooka’s share of $188,878 will be paid in three installments.

• Residents soon will get a heads-up on community events and meetings from a new electronic message center to be installed in front of the Village Hall. The new sign will be bought from Omega Signs and Lighting at a cost of $22,684.50.

• Low bidder Wolf Pack Development Group was awarded the job to replace the roof, soffit and fascia on the municipal building at a cost of $123,000.

Will County Drug Court to graduate 10 people

SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County will receive a more than $1 million federal grant to help pay for improvements along Black Road.

The construction project will provide relief for walkers, runners and bicyclists to cross Interstate 55 and the DuPage River while traveling from the Rock Run Greenway Trail in Joliet to the DuPage River Trail in Shorewood, according

to a news release from the district.

The district received in 2014 a $963,200 grant from the federally funded Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, which is being used for engineering for the entire Black Road project and construction of a 300-foot pedestrian/bicycle bridge over I-55 and new asphalt trail segments, according to the news release.

The $1.6 million grant announced Oct. 14 is part of the federal Transportation Alter-

natives Program and will help the district construct a 260-foot bridge over the DuPage River and a new trail connection on the south side of Black Road.

Phase I engineering for the $3.3 million Black Road project should be done by November and Phase II by August, the news release stated. The district plans to seek bids for construction of the bridges and trail extensions in November 2016. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and be completed in 2018.

Construction starts on warehouse in Laraway Crossings

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ryan Companies US has announced that construction has started on a 746,772-square-foot speculative warehouse at its Laraway Crossings Business Park in Joliet.

The project is being devel-

oped by Hillwood Investment Properties, a Texas-based developer of warehouse and distribution sites.

The project was made public in July, when Hillwood sought tax incentives from the city of Joliet. That request was put on hold until a user for the property is found.

The warehouse is going on

a 49-acre site at 201 Emerald Drive. Laraway Crossings is home to the Amazon.com fulfillment center that opened this month. Ikea plans to build two 1.4-million-square-foot buildings for a distribution center in the business park.

Laraway Crossing, which totals 362 acres, is located at Route 53 and Laraway Road.

10 Will County Forest Preserve District receives more than $1 million for Black Road project

On Tuesday, the Shorewood Village Board honored Dougherty, Coldwater and Butcher with letters of commendation for their role in the incident.

“The Shorewood officers

responding were heading into unfamiliar territory outside of their normal patrol area,” Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima said in a written statement. “Despite this, the officers responded quickly and efficiently and integrated with Channahon police in attempting to locate the subject.”

Shorewood-Troy library leases land for potential expansion SHOREWOOD – The Shorewood-Troy Public Library District is exploring the idea of expanding.

The library will be conducting an informal survey at the start of next year to determine what library patrons and the public think about expansion of the library’s services and physical space in the future.

“It’s going to be low-key and in-house,” library Director Jennie Mills said about the survey. “We’re getting a pulse and gauging when people want programming to be. We’ll get a quick and dirty look at it.”

In July, the library’s board approved a 20-year lease with Shorewood Plaza LLC for the 1-acre lot across the street from its building at 650 Deerwood Drive. The library is paying $1 a year along with the property taxes for the land, Mills said.

“The opportunity to lease it came up,” Mills said. “We’re not quite sure of what to do with it. It could be used to expand parking for an expansion of the building.”

Currently, the library has about 20 parking spaces.

Mills said patrons and nonpatrons are welcome to take the survey, which is expected to start in January.

Construction settlement

The library has settled disputes for contracts related to its two-story window-wall reconstruction process.

In August 2014, the library’s northern windowpane wall was demolished for reconstruction after a report revealed the wall was in dangerously bad shape.

Evanston-based Continental Construction was hired as the contractor for the job, expecting to complete the $78,000 project in two to three months.

But in early January, after demolition and some material work was completed and after several delays, the library stopped hearing from Continental and work stalled on the project.

Attempts to contact Continental were futile, and subcontractors who already had completed some masonry and steel work were left to seek payment from the library.

Eventually, Glen Ellyn-based RoMAAS Inc. took over the job and completed it in March. But the library board was discussing taking legal action against Continental.

While the board eventually decided against filing suit – Mills said legal costs weren’t worth the financial returns – the board did settle costs for completed work with subcontractors.

Mills said the library settled with Condon Steel for $5,000 and Service Masonry for $6,200.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet police: Wal-Mart purse snatcher caught

JOLIET – Police said a Dwight man grabbed purses from women Monday night and Tuesday morning in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Joliet.

Jeremie J. Porter, 37, of the 100 block of John Street, has been charged with robbery, theft and aggravated battery to a senior citizen, according to Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner.

Shortly Jeremie before 8 p.m. J. Porter Monday, a woman was putting groceries in her car in the lot at 2424 W. Jefferson St. when a man ran up, took her purse from her shopping cart and fled, Roechner said.

At 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, a 72-year-old woman had just finished loading her car when she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground by a man who grabbed her purse, Roechner said.

Detective Brad McKeon said witnesses were able to provide a description of the suspect, his car and a partial license plate to investigators.

After reviewing surveillance video, McKeon went to a nearby motel and saw a Dodge Charger pulling out of the lot that matched the vehicle police were seeking.

When questioned at the station, Porter allegedly admitted to taking both purses, McKeon said.

Joliet police: Morris man robbed bakery

JOLIET – Police said a Morris man robbed a Joliet bakery Monday afternoon.

At 12:26 p.m., Dustin J. Leasure, 34, approached a cashier at Joliet Bakery, 821 Plainfield Road, and demanded money in the register, Deputy Chief Al Roechner said. Roechner said Leasure was wearing sunglasses and a bandana over his face.

After getting Dustin J. the cash, Lea- Leasure sure allegedly fled and was followed by the owner, who chased him to Raynor Avenue and Moran Street before losing sight of him. Police had been called to the scene and were directed by witnesses to Moran and Frederick streets where Leasure was taken into custody, Roechner said.

“He was identified as the suspect by witnesses from the bakery,” Roechner said.

Leasure, 34, of the 2400 block of Oakland Court in Morris was booked into the Will County jail on charges of robbery and burglary. He is being held on $100,000 bond.

Joliet gang member gets 57 years for killing bystander

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A gang member was sentenced Wednesday to 57 years in prison for the stray shot that killed an innocent bystander on a downtown Joliet street four years ago.

Jevon D. Lesley, 22, was convicted in June of the July 9, 2011, murder of Anthony Fearn outside the KO Z o n e B o x i n g Jevon Lesley Club, 218 E. Cass St. in Joliet. Lesley faced 45 years to life in prison.

Fearn, 18, had gone to a party at the club with some friends when it was shut down because of confrontations inside between two rival gangs. On the

sidewalk outside, Lesley took out a handgun and fired several times into the crowd, according to trial testimony. One shot struck and killed Fearn, who’d been running down Arch Court.

Fearn, a senior at Joliet West High School, who worked part time at Kohl’s and was an instructor at SUDA Mixed Martial Arts, had no gang involvement, which investigators believe was a reason witnesses and informants didn’t immediately identify Lesley as his killer.

Lesley was charged with Fearn’s murder 14 months after the shooting while he was already imprisoned on two convictions for unlawful use of a weapon.

ther, Earnest Bush, who attended the sentencing hearing.

“I know what it’s like to lose somebody in an instant, but I didn’t murder [Fearn].”

Lesley’s 14-year-old brother, Deonte, was killed Jan. 3, 2011, when Vernon McCormick sprayed bullets into the window of his Lockport Township home. Will County sheriff’s police said Lesley was McCormick’s target in the shooting, which also injured two others.

McCormick was sentenced to 85 years in prison the day after Lesley was charged with Fearn’s murder.

Bush said after the sentencing he “felt for [Lesley’s] family.”

“They have losses and I have losses. I just pray we can begin to move forward now,” Bush said.

He was taken into custody after a police pursuit led to a shootout near Interstate 55 and Arsenal Road in Channahon.

According to Klima’s account, Dougherty was one of

the first officers to arrive once the car stopped.

Coldwater and Butcher quickly arrived as Dougherty placed himself at “the most dangerous and critical place on the scene.”

As gunshots were exchanged, Butcher kept moving to a forward position. Butcher also assisted with securing and transporting Bertolini.

At one point, the shooter fled and jumped over a concrete barrier to the ground.

That’s when Coldwater jumped in and assisted in preventing Bertolini from escaping.

“They operated in a very professional manner, and they were brave too,” Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman said.

Officer Kimberly Giugler also was honored Tuesday for her role as DARE officer for more than 14 years.

“She definitely deserves it,” Chapman said. “The kids really connect with her.”

Alice L. Anderson, 93, of Morris, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 27, 2015, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris with Pastor Patrick Lohse officiating.

Interment will follow in Saratoga Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.

Born October 19, 1922, in Ford City, PA, she was the daughter of Sig and Fairy (Santchi) Roberts. She graduated from Ottawa Township High School with the class of 1940.

Alice married Gordon Anderson on January 15, 1947, in Ottawa. They lived most of their married life in Erienna Township and later moved to Morris in 2007. For several years she was employed at Kline’s Department Store in Ottawa and later at Hornsby’s In Morris.

She is survived by her children, Daniel (Carol) Anderson of Manhattan, Gail Fleming of Tipton, IA, Karen (Joseph) Cheshareck of Morris, Mavis (Dennis) O’Morrow of Fort Atkinson, WI and Kenneth (Patricia) Anderson of Garner, NC; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her loving husband on August 3, 2007; two grandchildren in infancy; one sister, Jeannette Helland; two brothers, Leonard and Dan Roberts.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris and the Grundy Extension. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Concussions lawsuit against Illinois prep group dismissed

CHICAGO – An Illinois judge has dismissed the nation’s first class-action concussions lawsuit against a prep sports governing body, saying the Illinois High School Association has taken steps to make football safer and that imposing costly requirements could force some schools to drop the sport.

The ruling by Cook County Judge Leroy Martin Jr., issued Tuesday, rejects a case brought on behalf of players who sought court supervision over how high schools manage football head injuries. The suit also calls for the IHSA, which oversees about 50,000 football players at hundreds of Illinois high schools each year, to pay for medical testing of former high school players extending back to 2002.

IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman praised the decision Wednesday, saying the organization has worked to minimize the risk of injury in all sports.

“We maintain that the way to make high school football in Illinois safer is not through divisive lawsuits, but rather through collaborative efforts,” Hickman said. “We have followed this practice for years, and it’s obvious the court agrees with our approach.”

Chicago council passes budget with property tax hike

CHICAGO – Chicago’s City Council easily approved a budget plan Wednesday that includes a massive property tax hike and other fees to help close a shortfall and improve the city’s underfunded pension system, votes many aldermen called the most difficult of their political careers.

an incremental $543 million property tax increase for police and fire pensions, along with a separate $45 million property tax hike for school construction, a $9.50 monthly household garbage pickup charge and other fees. The former White House chief of staff said the measures were necessary to restore the financial health.

While much of the debate before Wednesday’s 36-14 vote on the $7.8 billion budget was supportive, many aldermen said the consideration of it and connected revenue measures were a last resort. Part of Emanuel’s plan to shield more vulnerable residents from the property tax increase needs state lawmaker approval.

More cuts at U of Illinois as budget wait continues

URBANA – University of Illinois leaders said cuts announced last week in administration spending aren’t the only places where the state budget uncertainty is having an effect.

University President Timothy Killeen and Urbana-Champaign campus interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson said at a faculty meeting Monday that an advancement office in San Francisco has been closed and new offices planned in China and India have been put on hold.

According to The News-Gazette in Champaign, cuts are also being made in the College of Engineering budget.

The university and other state-funded agencies and institutions around Illinois are still waiting for a state budget that was due in July. Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly have failed to agree on a budget as the state faces massive spending shortfalls.

Illinois prisons returning trucks after failing to pay

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Corrections says it will return five semitrailers to a company that has walked away from a contract after the state

failed to pay.

The Larson Group agreed to sixyear contract in 2010 to lease five trucks to the agency for $68,000 a year. The Chicago Tribune reported the company decided to walk away from the contract a year early because department said it owes more than $17,000.

An IDOC offshoot called Illinois Correctional Industries used the trucks. IDOC spokeswoman Nicole Wilson said the agency is scheduled to return the trucks Thursday. They are parked at a warehouse in Lincoln.

The move comes as the state remains without a budget for the fiscal year.

EPA says Illinois can weigh in on Indiana quarry

KANKAKEE – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Illinois should get a chance to publicly object to a proposed northwest Indiana quarry on the Kankakee River.

An EPA official sent a letter to officials in both states and the

Army Corps of Engineers, which has the final say on the quarry in Lake County, Indiana. The letter is the EPA’s first official action on the matter, the Kankakee Daily Journal reported.

Singleton Stone LLC wants to build a 600-acre quarry, and Indiana and the Corps have issued permits for the project. Illinois officials have asked Indiana to suspend its permit, saying the project would make flooding worse and speed up the buildup of sand and silt in the river.

EPA spokesman Peter Cassell said the letter is a “notification to Illinois of its rights.” U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Matteson, had written the EPA requesting a public hearing.

Indiana’s permit would allow Singleton Stone to pump up to 52 million gallons of water a day into the man-made Singleton Ditch tributary of the Kankakee River, which flows in both states. A Nov. 5 hearing has been scheduled for Illinois officials to object to the Indiana permit.

But in an economic policy-focused debate, Trump and Carson at times faded to the background during the two-hour contest.

Bush, once seen as the top Republican contender, entered the debate desperately in need of a strong performance to right his sluggish campaign and soothe his supporters’ anxiety. He quickly targeted Rubio for his spotty voting record on Capitol Hill, signaling he sees the Florida senator as the candidate most likely to block his political path.

“Marco, when you signed up for this, this was a 6-year term and you should be showing up for work,” said Bush, who was forced to slash campaign spending in response to slower fundraising. “You can campaign, or just resign and let someone else take the job.”

Rubio, who has had a close relationship with Bush, responded sharply: “The only reason you’re doing it is that we’re running for the same position, and someone has convinced you that attacking me will help you.”

Trump, the brash real estate mogul, has dominated the Republican race for months, but was a less of a factor Wednesday night than in the previous two debates.

And he defended his record in the private sector despite having to declare bankruptcy, casting it as a business technique.

“I’ve used that to my advantage as a businessman,” Trump said. “I used the laws of the country to my benefit.”

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has been circling Trump for months, seeking to position himself as the heir to the businessman’s supporters if he fades. While Cruz holds office in the U.S. Senate, he’s cast himself as anti-establishment and a thorn in the side of GOP leaders.

Cruz garnered enthusiastic applause when he criticized debate moderators for trying to stir up fights among the candidates, casting it as a sign of media bias against Republicans – a popular line with GOP voters.

The jumbled GOP field is a stark contrast to the Democratic contest, where Hillary Rodham Clinton is strengthening her front-runner status over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

requirements. As he finished, the judge immediately asked: “Did you know that what you were doing was wrong?”

He responded, “Yes, sir.”

The 15-page plea deal, which Hastert signed Wednesday, was released after the hearing.

In it, he acknowledged the unnamed person and that the two “discussed past misconduct”

by Hastert against that person, who is only referred to as “Individual A.” That discussion led to the agreement for $3.5 million.

Sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 29.

Since the plea deal offers a range of punishment, the sentencing hearing could include arguments from prosecutors on why Hastert should spend

some time behind bars and from the defense about why he should be spared prison.

Asked by the judge if the government would call any witnesses at the sentencing, lead prosecutor Steven Block left open that possibility, saying the prosecution would decide at a later date.

Prosecutors could theoretically call to the witness stand the unnamed person Hastert was allegedly paying, a prospect that could make public the conduct Hastert sought to conceal.

The sentencing range is below what some legal experts had predicted. They thought prosecutors would press for six months to two years in prison.

CHICAGO – Dennis Hastert pleaded guilty Wednesday to evading banking laws in a hush-money scheme, averting a potentially lurid trial that could have dredged up sexual allegations by agreeing to a deal with prosecutors that recommended he serve no more than six months in prison.

In the written agreement, the Illinois Republican directly acknowledged for the first time that he sought to pay someone $3.5 million to hide misconduct by Hastert against that person dating back several decades, to around the time the longtime GOP leader was a high school wrestling coach.

Before accepting the plea, the 73-year-old was warned by the judge that he could go beyond the recommendation and give Hastert up to five years behind bars when he is sentenced in February.

Because the plea agreement has a sentencing range from no prison time to six months, U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin also could decide to put Hastert on probation or home confinement.

The plea helped seal the downfall of a man who rose from obscurity in rural Illinois to the nation’s third-highest political office. During his eight years as speaker, Hastert was second in the line of succession to the presidency.

As he stepped to the lectern to answer a series of questions, he spoke in a voice so soft that the judge told him to speak up.

The hearing revealed no new details about why Hastert agreed to pay the money. The indictment and the plea language both said the payments were meant to conceal past misconduct by Hastert, but neither document explained the nature of the wrongdoing.

The Associated Press and other media, citing anonymous sources, have reported that the payments were meant to hide claims of sexual misconduct.

At the half-hour hearing in Chicago, a subdued Hastert read from a brief statement that – like his indictment – focused narrowly on how he technically broke banking laws.

Sacrifice, leadership needed in Congress CLEARWATER, Fla. — “Be ready for the moment of your death. Are you ready?”

The Rev. Charles Leke was encouraging us last Tuesday morning to get right with God at the Our Lady of Divine Providence House of Prayer.

As a good shepherd does, Father Leke was pointing us in the right direction – even if it meant shaking up a beautiful Sunshine State day with harsh mortal reality.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming. But Ash Wednesday, that somber, sober day, is on my mind.

When John Boehner began his tenure as speaker of the House – the second Catholic to hold the post – he took a penitential posture in his opening speech.

“In the Catholic faith, we enter into a season of service by having ashes marked on our foreheads.

The ashes remind us that life in all its forms is fragile – our time on this Earth, fleeting,” he said.

He knew then the job would be an uphill climb. One that required the kind of humility – and even serenity and wisdom – that politicians aren’t necessarily known for.

That was 2011 and the 112th Congress. Now, almost midway through the 114th four years later, Paul Ryan is reluctantly about to give in to pressure to take the job, as I write. Having watched Boehner’s thankless struggle over the years, Ryan’s lack of enthusiasm is understandable.

So Ryan has set some conditions. Among them: “First, we need to move from being an opposition party to a proposition party.

Because we think the nation is on the wrong path, we have a duty to show the right one. Our next speaker needs to be a visionary one.”

This sounds like leadership.

And it’s much needed in the divided and rancorous House.

The morning after Ryan’s conditions speech, my first Bible assignment for the day involved verses from Philippians. Paul writes there: “Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but (also) everyone for those of others.”

Doesn’t exactly make you think of Congress, does it? And yet: While Congress isn’t going to be run by the Good Book, for a body that largely welcomed Pope Francis just last month, a little divine inspiration could be a healthy thing right about now.

During his speech to Congress, the pope said: “Our efforts must aim at restoring hope, righting wrongs, maintaining commitments and thus promoting the well-being of individuals and of peoples. We must move forward together, as one, in a renewed spirit of fraternity and solidarity, cooperating generously for the common good.”

I’m reminded of Boehner’s favorite pep talk mantra: “If you do the right things for the right reasons, good things will happen.”

That’s accountability. Even our politics should be in service to ideals of sacrifice, humility and love.

Public should know what Hastert did The public has a right to know what J. Dennis Hastert, former speaker of the House and now a convicted felon, really did.

We saw Hastert on Wednesday shambling though the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago, the weight of his years and his fall from grace evident. Hastert, of Yorkville, was the longest-serving Republican U.S. speaker of the House – and, in a twist of fate, was ensnared by bank reporting rules he helped expand through the Patriot Act. Hastert, who was questioned by federal officials after making repeated large cash bank withdrawals, admitted to lying to the FBI. In federal court Wednesday, Hastert told a judge he lied because he didn’t want them to know how he was spending the money.

According to The Associated Press, The New York Times and other national media outlets, the cash was hush money paid to cover up sexual misconduct during Hastert’s time as a teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School, where he worked from 1965 to 1981.

What did Hastert do?

It must have been serious. After all, not only was he willing to pay $3.5 million to hide it, but he later was willing to lie to federal investigators and then plead guilty to a federal crime to keep

the public from knowing. After his guilty plea, Hastert could face a federal prison sentence of months or even years when he is sentenced Feb. 29.

But Hastert’s obligations go beyond serving time.

The America he helped lead has a right to know what original sin is at the center of this web of crime, lies and hush money. We have a right to know where this allegation came from and whether Hastert, who for eight years held one of the highest political offices in the United States, was stalked by it during his career in public life.

The victim was taking Hastert’s money in exchange for silence – was there a settlement reached between the two, or was it extortion? If it was extortion, we question why the unnamed person has not been called to account for their role in this scandal.

Is it because Hastert is the “big fish” that investigators wanted to land?

During his time in Congress, Hastert became tremendously wealthy, and later parlayed his connections into a lucrative lobbying career. He has the public to thank for that.

He owes us honesty, and some effort to make amends beyond months or years behind bars. An apology – one made publicly, with specifics – would be an excellent start.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Indian girls will be looking for their third straight sectional title, while the boys

squad will be seeking its first sectional win when both compete Saturday in the Class 3A Normal Community Sectional at Maxwell Park.

Coach Kevin Gummerson’s girls squad is among the favorites to challenge for a trophy with a top-three showing at state, while his boys team hopes to get back to Peoria after missing out the past two years.

Minooka kicked off what it hopes will be a memorable

postseason when it won both team titles and individual champions in its own regional.

“The kids have worked hard for this,” Gummerson said. “It’s happened throughout the course of the summer and throughout this entire season. The girls went out and took care of business; and we’ve been working on the boys trying to close the door over the last mile and a half, and they put themselves out strong and were able to back it

up down the stretch.

“It’s two great groups, and it’s nice to see them enjoying some success after all of the work that they’ve put in. Our goal from Day 1 was to run our best race at Detweiller in November. You can’t worry about what everyone else is doing – you just have to focus on doing things right throughout the course of the season, and they’ve done that.”

Minooka’s girls are expected to qualify for the IHSA

finals for the eighth straight year, while its boys team hopes to get back on course where it competed on the final day of the season each year from 2008 to 2012.

The Indian girls had the top four finishers in their regional, led by champion Ashley Tutt.

PREP FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS PREVIEW: MINOOKA VS. HUNTLEY

Indians excited about playoff opportunity

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – For the first time since 2011, the Minooka football team has qualified for the playoffs.

The task won’t be easy for the 5-4 Indians as they take to the road to play 9-0 Huntley at 1 p.m. Saturday in Class 8A. But the Indians, who beat a playoff team in Plainfield North on Friday to qualify, don’t seem to mind.

“One of the goals at the start of the year was for us to be a playoff team,” said Minooka coach Paul Forsythe, who will be making his playoff debut in his fourth year at the helm. “We certainly would have liked to be in a better position, but the playoffs were the goal, and here we are.

“Now, what we can control is how we prepare for the game. The kids are excited to be in the playoffs, and play-

ing on Saturday gives us an extra day to prepare, so we feel like we’re in pretty good shape.”

Forsythe said Huntley employs an offense similar to the Indians’, running out of a shotgun with two running backs. Casey Haayer leads the Red Raiders with 848 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 168 carries through nine games, while Eric Mooney has run for 652 yards and 13 TDs on 70 attempts.

Quarterback Anthony Binetti has added 359 yards and six touchdowns on 87 carries to the running attack. Binetti has completed 118 of 190 passes for 1,954 yards and 18 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. His top target is Alec Coss, who has caught 33 passes for 631 yards and eight touchdowns, while Mooney has 27 catches for 548 yards and four scores.

Forsythe said. “They’re a twoback shotgun offense, kind of like ours. Their quarterback is a good runner, too. It shouldn’t be too big a surprise for our guys because it’s what they practice against, and quite a few teams we played this year ran it, too.

“I have faith in our defense. They have done a great job all year. We have been in a lot of close games. Most of our games have come down to the last possession, and a big reason for that is that our defense has kept us in games.

The coaches on that side of the ball have really done a great job this year. We have strug-

gled the last three years on defense; but this year, we have a lot of seniors with experience, and that has helped.”

When Minooka has the ball, the offense runs through quarterback John Carnagio, who has completed 158 of 276 passes for 1,953 yards and 14 touchdowns against just five interceptions. His main target is Isaiah Hill, who has 49 catches for 735 yards and eight TDs. Running back Jaccor Blakney has filled in for the graduated Nathan Gunn and produced 492 rushing yards and eight touchdowns to help complement the passing game, as well as catching

Another squad that competed in the Minooka Regional also looks like a good bet to advance as a team. Lincoln-Way Central’s girls received top-10 regional showings from Kelly Robbins, Jenna Diers and Madison Smith.

Joliet Central’s boys and Lincoln-Way East’s girls both hope they also will be able to get out of the Normal Community Sectional. Those teams competed at the Andrew Regional, where Raul Rosendo and Vicente Moreno were in the top 10 for the Steelmen, and Lincoln-Way East’s Scott Platek also took fifth place.

Coach Wendy Hegarty’s Griffins won the regional title, with Jenna and Erin Couwenhoven, Katie DeJulius, Alyssa Vogt and Rachel Troeger placing in

the top 10. Joliet West’s Maddie Blaauw won the competition, while Tigers teammate Kiersten Perry was fourth.

The other Class 3A team that also figures to qualify for state is Lockport’s girls squad, which won the title at Plainfield South.

Coach Erin Truesdale received top-10 regional finishes from Morgan Bollinger, Aubrey Friedrich and Karlee Stortz. Plainfield South’s Alexis Grigg also was in the top 10 at the regional.

Plainfield South’s boys – who received top-10 regional showings from John Partee, Andy Bhatia, Hunter Dyer and Austin Brown – also are hoping to advance to the Hinsdale Central Sectional at Katherine Legge Park.

Both Plainfield North squads face a challenge in advancing to the Class 3A West Aurora Sectional. Rachael Lau and Juliana Stogsdill both were in the top four at the West Chicago Regional, while Jack Sebok placed in the top 10 for the Tigers boys.

In Class 2A, Lincoln-Way West’s boys hope to advance to the U-High Sectional, which also

will be at Maxwell Park. Coach Jason Van Swol’s squad won the Crete-Monee Regional behind champion Evan Mitchell, while John Stglic, Ryan Taylor and Peter Motto were also in the top 10, as were Providence’s Mike Higgins and Morris’ Zach Chapman.

Coach David Kies’ West girls squad won the same regional with Teagan Lyke, Madisen Feehan, Natalie Krol and Jenna Fiore also placing in the top 10.

Lemont’s girls team also figures to advance from the Class 2A Wheaton Academy Sectional.

Coach Tim Plotke’s squad won the Marist Regional with Taylor Campos, Bridget Kunkel and Gabby Voltarel all turning in top-10 showings.

In Class 1A, coach Kim Sedlock’s Seneca girls hope to advance from the Oregon Sectional behind regional champion Eva Bruno while Christopher Collet won the boys title. Gardner-South Wilmington’s Daly Galloway also won a regional title while Joliet Catholic’s Harry McSteen and G-SW’s Michael Mankowski both claimed second place.

Forsythe feels that the competition his team faced throughout the regular season will be a help now that the playoffs are here.

“We feel like we’re pretty well tested,” he said. “We beat a good Plainfield North team just to qualify for the playoffs, so we’re playing well right now. But the playoffs are fun.

It’s an unknown opponent, so we’ll just see how we match up against them. We know they are fast, but it’s hard to gauge the speed from film.

“The kids are excited to get out there and see what they can do.”

“It was a great game, and we came out on top,” Reents said. “There are two ways to look at playing an 8-0 team. Wilmington won its first state football championship last season, beating Williamsville, 20-17, in a thrilling Class 3A final.

But while that is the crowning achievement in the Wildcats’ storied history, truth be known, Wilmington under coach Jeff Reents has sported several teams over the last couple of decades that might have been capable of the same achievement, had things broken their way.

“We’re doing a lot of the same things now that we have done over the last 20 years,” said Reents, whose team is 9-0 entering its Class 3A playoff opener at 7 p.m. Friday against visiting Peoria Heights. “We had some bad breaks where different things went the wrong way.”

Perhaps that has changed.

“The last couple of years, things have been bouncing our way,” Reents continued. “You have to be good; but, sometimes, you have to have luck on

Celtics got hot when it counted

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – While many boys soccer programs that have assured themselves of a spot in this weekend’s sectional finals still can count their losses on one hand, Providence had reached that total seven matches into the season.

But it’s not about how you start, but rather how you finish. And in that regard, coach Dan Potempa’s Celtics are the last men standing among the area’s soccer squads.

Providence (11-9-1) carries a sixmatch winning streak into Saturday’s 11 a.m. Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Sectional final against George Washington. The winner advances to Tuesday’s 5 p.m. Lewis University Supersectional against Kennedy or Solorio.

“I am really excited for Saturday’s game,” Potempa said. “Washington is a good, solid team. I anticipate us matching up really well with them. It should be a real good soccer game.”

The Patriots won the Class 2A title two years ago and still have some players who were on that team, including IHSSCA award winners Miguel Rodriguez, Rogelio

Catalan and Josue Navarro.

Providence started off 1-5-1 and still was only 5-9-1 after a loss earlier this month at Minooka. But the seventh-seeded Celtics ended the regular season with three wins and have won three more times in the playoffs, beating second seed Lincoln-Way West in the regional final and third seed Manteno in Tuesday’s sectional semifinals.

The Celtics are led by all-sectional players Kevin Sullivan (10 goals, three assists) and PJ Kowalkowski (three goals, assist). Luke Picard (11 goals, six assists), Scottie Slocum (seven goals, four assists), Bernie O’Donnell (five goals, six assists) and Jack Richardson (three goals, five assists) are other scoring leaders.

“I am proud of what my boys have done all season, especially as of late,” Potempa said. “Their hard work is finally starting to pay off.

We are really clicking as a team right now.

“It took us most of the season, but we have eventually gotten everyone on the same page, and we are playing really well right now.

We know that the road ahead of us will be tough, but we are up for the challenge and look forward to it.”

That’s a positive, because the Class 3A bracket where Wilmington is the No 1 seed is loaded.

“We start with the Peoria team, then we’ll play Lisle or Byron, and then Sterling Newman or Bishop McNamara,” Reents said. “The only way for us to approach that, it’s got to be week to week.”

The key to the Wildcats’ success has been the running game.

“The big thing is we have been able to run the ball out of our double wing,” Reents said.

“We have seen a lot of different defenses, and we’ve run against all of them. We have Nick Hawkins, of course, and Owen Weaver has really come on.

“Our defense is solid, but we have given up a few points at times. But our offense has always come through.”

Hawkins has rushed for 1,370 yards, an 8.5 average, and 20

touchdowns. Weaver has added 695 yards, a 7.7 average, and eight touchdowns. The Wildcats are averaging 35.3 points while seldom throwing the ball.

“What we are doing is a tribute to Barry [Southall, the offensive coordinator] and coach Murphy [Rob Murphy, the offensive line coach],” Reents said.

Reents noted the importance of taking each game as it comes, but most prognosticators expect the Wildcats to take care of business Friday night and move on.

“Our kids had confidence from the beginning,” Reents said. “There were high expectations this year, but sometimes it takes time to jell.

“What has really been big is that our seniors have a winning attitude. In games that could have gone either way, we came up with the big plays. Winning is contagious, and losing is contagious. We’re fortunate that we are on the good side.”

9. Providence (3-6): The Celtics did not enjoy the type of season they are accustomed to having. Injuries were a major factor.

10. Lockport (4-5): The Porters finished strong, winning three straight and demonstrating they indeed belong among the top 10 large schools in the area at season’s end.

SMALL SCHOOLS

1. Wilmington (9-0): The defending Class 3A state champion Wildcats finished the season in style, holding off previously unbeaten Manteno, 42-35. Peoria Heights will visit in the 3A playoff opener.

2. Coal City (5-4): The Coalers had to win last week at Seneca to secure their playoff berth, and they got it done.

The playoff assignment is difficult, with a visit to Marengo for starters.

3. Peotone (3-6): The Blue Devils lost by a touchdown or less to 6-3 Herscher, 5-4 Coal City and 9-0 Wilmington and by two touchdowns to 7-2 Plano. Nine opponents won 47 games in all.

NEW YORK – Jimmy Butler scored 24 points, Nikola Mirotic had 18 and the Bulls won for the second time in two nights to open the season, beating the Brooklyn Nets, 115-100, on Wednesday night.

Pau Gasol added 16 points and Derrick Rose 15 for the Bulls, who followed their season-opening victory over Cleveland by shooting 54 percent and leading by as many as 19. They built a big early lead, blew most of it with a defenseless second quarter and quickly pulled away again in the third.

Brook Lopez had 26 points and Andrea Bargnani had 17.

The Nets opened their 40th season in the NBA by falling into a quick 7-0 hole and trailing the rest of the way.

They missed all nine 3-point attempts.

The Nets had won their first home game in all three seasons since moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn. They were hoping to get this game, one of their few at Barclays Center during a rough opening stretch. They play seven of their first 10 on the road, including a back-to-back this weekend at San Antonio and Memphis.

Showing plenty of energy after holding on for a 97-95 home victory over the Cavaliers, the Bulls jumped to a 2812 lead and led by 11 after one.

The Nets then made 16 of 23 shots and scored 36 points in the second, their highest-scoring quarter ever in an opener, to cut it to 58-55 at halftime.

But the Bulls opened it up again late in the third, getting a basket by Rose with 3:17 left to beat the shot clock after the Nets cut it to six. Butler added a couple of baskets to keep a safe lead from there.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Johnny Cueto smothered the New York Mets with another big October outing. And the pesky Kansas City Royals kept fouling off Jacob deGrom’s best pitches, wearing him down with persistence and prowess.

Cueto never faltered. And as deGrom wore down, the Royals pounced.

Eric Hosmer hit a tiebreaking, two-run single with two outs in a four-run fifth inning that included 14 foul balls, and the Royals rallied to beat the Mets, 7-1, Wednesday night and take a 2-0 World Series lead.

Nineteen hours after Hosmer’s sacrifice fly won a 14-inning thriller, Cueto pitched a two-hitter, varying his delivery with occasional quick pitches and keeping the Mets off balance. An excited crowd stood on its feet for long stretches on the rainy night.

Some fans wore wigs resembling Cueto’s long, dark dreadlocks – including the Royals’ mascot, Slugerrr.

With Kansas City two wins from its its first title since 1985, the teams take Thursday off.

New York’s Citi Field hosts its first Series game Friday, when rookie Noah Syndergaard starts for the Mets and Yordano Ventura for the Royals.

Forty-one of the 51 teams to take 2-0 leads in best-of-seven World Series have gone on to win the title, including nine straight since Atlanta stumbled against the New York Yankees in 1996.

Kansas City had the best contact hitters in the major leagues this season, missing on just 19.7 percent of its swings, according to STATS. The Dodgers and Cubs swung and missed 58 times in his first three postseason outings, but he got just three swings and misses against the Royals – his career low.

Seminary student with Joliet ties recounts experiences in Guatemala, Cuba

JOLIET – There’s so much food.

Granted, this isn’t a typical reaction to stepping inside a convenience store in Mexico.

But for seminary student Marcus Lohrmann – a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Joliet who had just spent two weeks in Guatemala and then eight weeks in Cuba and was simply passing through Mexico, the abundance was overpowering after witnessing tremendous poverty.

“I don’t know what sort of projects or future ministries will come out of this,” Lohrmann said, “but I do find it troubling to live in a world where we have such affluence in this country, and that there are places in this world that have so little and that are living in situations that are pretty terrible.”

Lohrmann – who is married to the church’s pastor, the Rev. Rebekkah Lohrmann, and who will speak about his experiences Nov. 19 at the church – said he had three goals in mind when he applied for a $6,000 International Ministry Grant through the University of Chicago, where he is working on a Master of Divinity degree.

He wanted to immerse himself in a Spanish-speaking and vulnerable community, see the effects of the United States’ changed relationship to Cuba and observe the practice of religion in a secularized country. Lohrmann did all three.

“I am of the opinion at this point of history in the United States that it’s valuable to have some experience speaking Spanish, and that’s something I regret not having before,” Lohrmann said. “I think one aspect of ministry is knowing where people come from, so I wanted to immerse myself in their language and culture.”

Andriana Acosta, daughter of Felipe and Maria Acosta, is the Lions Club September Student of the Month. Acosta is a member of the varsity girls volleyball, basketball and soccer programs. She recently was named to the 2015 Esmark High School All-American Team for Basketball.

Her favorite subject is human anatomy.

She is president of the Leos Club and is in the Spanish Club, Andriana Respect Life Acosta Club, Student Ambassadors, student council, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Club and National Art Honor Society.

FAITH BRIEFS Joliet church sponsoring two iconography retreats

JOLIET – St. Edward’s and Christ Parish of Joliet and Kendall County will sponsor two iconography retreats, one of eight days and the other of three days – both to be held at the Christ Campus Retreat Center, 10422 Grove Road, Joliet.

The three-day iconography retreat will take place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. The eight-day retreat will take place from Nov. 7 to Nov. 14. The theme of this year’s retreat is “Shepherd Me, O God.” The instructor for both retreats is Kathy Sievers, of the “Elizabeth The Wonder Worker” studio in the state of Oregon.

Cost of the eight-day retreat is $900.

Cost for the three-day retreat is $450.

Registration is limited to a maximum of 10 persons for each retreat. Included in the cost are room and board at the retreat center, a manual and some supplies for the creation of an icon panel.

MINOOKA – Minooka’s Village Christian Church is taking orders for Christmas ornaments handmade by women in Swaziland through a ministry called “Heart for Africa,” a faith-based nonprofit 5013(c) charity that offers meaningful employment to the poverty-stricken.

The sale of the ornaments enable the women to provide for their families and for the community’s orphanage. The church is sending a group to Swaziland on Nov. 22 and is taking orders now that will be filled during its trip. The church also has some ornaments available now.

At major bridge tournaments, there are two sessions of play, each lasting almost four hours – eight hours a day. But this deal revolves around the trump eight. How does it have a key role to play?

South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond 10 in answer to his partner’s opening bid. What should happen after that?

South, with a good eight-card suit and no outside values, correctly jumped straight to the four-level. He hoped that if he could not make his contract, he might force the opponents into an erroneous decision.

Note that five diamonds doubled

by East could cost a painful 1,400, North-South taking two spades, one heart, three clubs and a spade ruff by South.

East wins the first trick with his diamond queen, cashes the diamond ace, and continues with the diamond king, which South ruffs with his heart queen.

West might think that it cannot cost to overruff. But first, he should ask himself what he will do next. East cannot have a quick entry. Also, as the heart king will always score a trick, it cannot gain to overruff. West should discard.

South crosses to the dummy and leads the heart nine, which is covered

So, if you have nothing important to do, calmly discard; perhaps even an eight will be promoted as a winner.

The drainage path can be tracked. The first lymph node along the path is called the sentinel node. This node is removed and examined for cancer cells. If the sentinel node has no cancer, the other nodes are most often cancer-free.

If cancer is found in the sentinel node, all the lymph nodes in the area will likely be removed.

In addition to surgery, treatments for melanoma include immunotherapy.

This treatment strengthens the immune system against the cancer.

Recently developed techniques for stimulating your immune system to attack the cancer have sometimes been dramatically effective. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also available, but tend to be less effective.

Newer drugs target specific genetic changes seen in people with certain forms of melanoma. For example, about half of melanomas have genetic changes (mutations) in a gene called BRAF. This mutation signals melanoma cells to grow and divide quickly.

Drugs that inhibit BRAF and related proteins are now available.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor just discovered that I have melanoma, but didn’t really explain the treatment. Can you tell me what I’m in for?

Dear Reader: Melanoma is skin cancer that begins in the melanocytes – cells that give skin its color.

Usually these cells first form a precancerous condition called a dysplastic (diss-PLAS-tik) mole. Then the cells turn cancerous and start to reproduce aggressively.

When that happens, the melanoma grows in size. Unfortunately, some of the cells also can shake loose from the tumor and spread throughout the body. When that happens, the cells first spread to the local lymph nodes, then on to the rest of the body. If melanoma has not spread, it can be cured.

If your melanoma appears in just one spot, it will be surgically removed. The doctor removes the visible part of the tumor. He or she will also remove some healthy skin around the tumor.

(The exact amount will depend on the size of the tumor.) The extra skin is removed because it can contain microscopic bits of the cancer. You want all of the cancerous cells removed.

In some cases, the doctor may perform a procedure during which the tumor is shaved away one thin layer at a time.

Each layer is examined under a microscope as it is removed. This technique helps the doctor remove as little healthy skin as possible.

Your doctor may also want to check if the melanoma has spread to nearby lymph nodes. These small structures are part of the immune system. To check, your doctor may inject a radioactive liquid into the tumor. The liquid flows through the natural drainage pathway that connects the tumor to nearby lymph
