Electric Park PLAINFIELD – In 1904, the Aurora, Plainfield, & Joliet Railway established a streetcar line with a popular, 20-acre camping resort in Plainfield known as Electric Park.

When constructed, Electric Park provided the trolley line excursionist an ideal summer resort spot.

Built along the banks of the DuPage River near Lockport and James Streets, the attractions included camping cabins, a large auditorium, a dance hall, a refreshment pavilion, a theater, bowling alley, swimming pool, glider swings and an occasional balloon ride.

As shown in the then photograph, many patrons enjoyed strolling along the many winding pathways found throughout the park.

Another popular water activity at Electric Park was boating on the DuPage River.

Not only could adventurous patrons rent rowboats for a nominal fee, but large groups could climb aboard the Mary Lee for a paddle wheel boat pleasure ride up and down the river.

Located on the west side of the river, the ever-popular toboggan slide, with its bathhouse at the base and the 150 steps to the top, entertained many young visitors each year as they enjoyed a steep slide on a toboggan into the water on a hot summer day.

The Electric Park closed in the early 1920s, when buses and automobiles replaced the trolley line through the area.

By MAUREEN BLEVINS Shaw Media Correspondent It was a gorgeous day in the neighborhood as residents of Glenwood Manor subdivision in Joliet and their guests began gathering in the 600 block of Apollo Drive for their annual Halloween parade.

“We plan it that way,” joked Lee Rakoski, homeowners association president, referring to the weather.

His grandson Nicky Liyeos, 4, wheeled around on his trike in a miniature police uniform while his siblings Grace, 7, and M.J., 9, got ready to march.

Brian Dames, association secretary, lined up entrants for the parade as Rakoski, president since 2008, walked back and forth, greeting arrivals and making sure everything was in order.

Almost as many adults as children were dressed in costumes, and it was a good mix of newcomers and old-timers.

Longtime subdivision residents Jock and Liz Giacomi, dressed like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, tow a small fishing boat behind their truck every year to carry their grandchildren, Andrew Henschen, 8, twins Caroline and Jaxson Cope, also age 8, and their brother, Matthew, 9, through the parade.

Josh Bregar dressed as the Big Bad Wolf pulled a wagon with his daughter Madilyn – Little Red Riding Hood. They were there for their second year.

Past association president Tony Rousonelos has lived in the neighborhood for 41 years and can’t remember a year when there wasn’t a parade. When they first started doing the parade, there were “a lot of young families, but as the kids grew up and moved away, it dwindled” he said. Now, there is a

James Rositch, 5, was with mom and dad, Fred and Julie. Although they have lived in the neighborhood for about four years, this was their first year in the parade.

James was costumed as a tornado, an outfit they credit him with thinking of on his own.

Michelle McAvoy, her daughter, Jessica Cole, and grandsons, Zack and Ben, have lived in the neighborhood for five years, but also were first-time parade participants along with their dog, Oliver.

Anne and Carl Ziech, whose sister lives in the subdivision, brought their son Charlie, 3½, dressed as a Transformer, and daughter Isabel, 2, dressed as a tiny Dorothy, complete with glit-

tery ruby slippers and a fuzzy Toto tucked inside her picnic basket. From Wheaton, it also was the Ziech family’s second year at the parade.

The parade was led by an official color guard and es-

corted for the fourth year by the American Legion Cycle Riders, all from American Legion Post 1080.

“We do it for God, country and family,” said Don Walden, one of the flag bear-

ers and another longtime resident of Glenwood Manor.

Arthur Hrvatin drove his 1931 Model A Ford and Joliet’s Mayor Tom Giarrante and his wife, Rose, brought their grandchildren, Lily and Logan, in their 1962 Impala.

Another truck pulled a hay wagon full of costumed children and their escorts.

A city of Joliet fire truck from Station No. 6 provided flashing lights and sirens to “make it more exciting,” said Rakoski, as they drove the eight-block parade route of 0.9 miles.

Every good parade has a marching band and students from Joliet West High School Band were invited to perform. About 30 some students, such as freshman Hannah Cobb who plays flute, decided to join the fun and gain some service hours at the same time.

Kathy Battaglia, a resident for 26 years, used to parade with her children when they were young but this year she set up a chair on the sidelines. With her was her son’s English mastiff, Arthur.

“It’s such a nice tradition,” she said. “I like to watch” the parade, adding that the homeowners association “is so good,” sponsoring several community functions during the year.

As the parade circled back to where they started, children posed for pictures in front of the fire truck and lined up for goody bags provided by the association.

Treats also were provided for the students in the band.

“We appreciate their efforts,” Rakoski said.

All participants agreed that it was a great tradition and a fun way to bring the neighborhood together.

One woman observing the parade said, “I wish all neighborhoods could be like this.”

Blinged-out bras Bras auctioned off for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

And just like that, Michelle Tramutolo, 50, of Lockport won the blinged-out Mardi Gras bra she was eyeing all day Saturday during the third annual Bras for a Cause event.

“It isn’t about the money,” said Tramutolo, who paid $100 for the bra. “Bottom line, it’s for a good cause. I lost my aunt to breast cancer.”

Tramutolo was among more than 200 people who attended Saturday’s Bras for a Cause event at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Infantry Drive in Joliet. One of the main attractions was the auctioning of more than 75 decorated bras, all designed by volunteers, local businesses and organizations.

The event also included food,

drinks, a 50/50 raffle and other prizes.

Cheryl Salaiz, the event organizer, said all the money raised goes to local breast cancer survivors or fighters “in need.”

“If I find someone who needs help affording groceries one month, this money can help them out,” Salaiz said, Last year, the event raised about $3,000, with 40 bras auctioned off, she said. This year, she hoped to at least double that.

Salaiz said before the event that she reaches out to people willing to decorate bras for the auction. If the person needs a bra to decorate, Salaiz will give them one for $10 and they can decorate and donate it however they’d like, she said.

Many of the bras were decorated with Breast Cancer Awareness Month themes,

Chicago sports teams, pop culture references, local businesses and organizations.

The majority of people in attendance were decked out in pink clothing.

Two-time breast cancer survivor Pat Krakar, 70, of Minooka attended the event with fellow members of Bosom Buddies, a local cancer survivor support group.

After first being diagnosed with stage one breast cancer in 1997, Krakar underwent a mastectomy and reconstruction, but the cancer came back eight years later as a Stage 3. She’s since entered remission, she said, and loves attending fun events like Bras for a Cause.

“It’s great to be doing something good for somebody else,” Krakar said. She and a fellow Bosom Buddies group member made a Flamingo-themed bra for the

Salaiz said the event could not be possible without the help of the community, including Paula Greenberg, a caterer for the Knights of Columbus.

Greenberg, a Stage 4 uterine cancer survivor, said she loves taking part in events like this because “every cancer survivor” – regardless of the type – “can relate.”

“We all can relate, either

from being nauseous from chemo or when you’re so tired because you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck, or maybe you lost somebody from cancer. You know, we all have stories to share,” Greenberg said. “If this money can help somebody through their cancer, maybe somebody will get a wig out of it or they needed some special-fitted bra, I’ll feel better.”

Harris challenges Walsh Jr. in Illinois House District 86

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After past unsuccessful runs for state, local and federal offices, Republican Diane Harris is turning her attention Nov. 4 to the Illinois House District 86, a seat currently held by Democrat State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr. The district covers Joliet, Rockdale, Crest Hill, Channahon and Elwood.

Harris’ first shot at public office was for Joliet mayor in 2011. And, in March, Harris, 58, of Joliet ran for the 3rd Congressional District but lost to Sharon Brannigan. She also ran unsuccessfully in the Illinois House’s 11th District in 2012.

“I’m sure some people are saying, ‘Oh my goodness, how

many times are you going to run?’ ” Harris said. “But my name is out there. I have been pounding the pavement and knocking on doors ever since.”

Harris retired last year after 32 years as a liability representative for Commonwealth Edison. Before that, Harris worked as an accounting clerk for the city.

She’s a precinct committeeman for Joliet 23, an at-large board member for the Cathedral Area Preservation Association, second vice president for Will County Republican Women and a member of the National Hook-Up of Black Women’s Joliet branch. She was recently endorsed by the Illinois Right to Life Political Action Committee Her opponent, Walsh Jr., is the son of Will County Ex-

ecutive Larry Walsh. A native of Elwood, Walsh Jr. was appointed to fill a seat vacated by long-term Diane Harris legislator Jack McGuire in 2012 and won an election for the post later that year.

From 1994 to 2007, Walsh Jr. Larry Walsh was employed Jr. at Caterpillar Inc. He became a union leader, rising to secretary-treasurer of International Association of Machinists District 8.

While Walsh Jr. has the name recognition following in his father’s political footsteps,

Harris said the focus should be on the issues.

“We need a change in government,” she said. “If we vote for the same people over and over again, we’ll get the same results.”

The No. 1 issue this campaign is whether the state will extend the “temporary” income tax hike from 2011.

“I truly believe our taxes should only be high enough so that our taxpayers are not overtaxed,” Harris said.

But Harris could not name specific spending cuts she would support to make up for the estimated $1.8 billion shortfall predicted if the tax is not extended, saying she would have to look at the budget.

But he noted the added revenue helped pay down a backlog of bills and allowed the state to make full pension payment each year.

“We can’t work a budget unless new revenue pops up.

And is that there? No,” Walsh Jr. said.

Breast Cancer month – awareness is key VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Jackie, Marcia, Karen, Debbie, Maggie, Mary, Tina (breast); Kevin, Sam (bone); Joe, Doug (prostate); Stacy, Joe (skin); Kyle, Gerry (lung); Grandpa Johnson (unknown origin); Mark (adrenal); Ardyss (colon) – these are just the people I can think of off the top of my head, and know or have met, who have been touched by cancer.

It’s a sad fact that many common types of cancer have months designated to their awareness. January is for cervical cancer; February is gallbladder and bile duct as well as National Cancer Prevention month; March is colorectal, kidney and multiple Myeloma awareness month (for a complete listing go to www.choosehope.come). You get my drift.

October is breast cancer awareness month. Everybody knows about breast cancer and many worry about it. But all the worry and fear in the world is wasted energy and added stress if we don’t take the steps to reduce our chances of getting cancer. And that means regular screening and early detection, as well as a healthy lifestyle.

Do you have a plan for early detection? Do you have regular mammograms? Do you have regular breast exams by a medical professional? Do you do self-breast exams monthly?

Do you eat properly, work to reduce stress levels, get enough sleep?

Do you encourage your daughters and friends to do the

same?

Did you know that after skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., according to the Mayo Clinic. And it can affect both men and women.

Thanks to early detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease, the number of deaths from breast cancer have been declining.

Karen Yang of Plainfield is a good example. Karen found a lump on the side of her breast one morning. It was large enough that she knew it wasn’t right. The next day she got right into her doctor and had a diagnostic mammogram and then a biopsy. The diagnosis was stage four breast cancer that had spread to her liver.

With a combination of chemotherapy, natural supplements, prayer and chiropractic adjustments to keep her immune system in gear, Karen is cancer-free and on a maintenance regime.

Karen also uses acupuncture, which helps alleviate neuropathy in her hands and feet from the chemotherapy.

Karen follows a healthy diet, something she really focused on during her treatments. Having a good doctor that you can easily talk to is important too.

Treatments for breast cancer have really changed in just the last several years, she said.

“In previous times my diagnosis would have been a death sentence,” she said. “But now it’s not.”

Rod Baker Ford also offers options on used car financing.

While zero percent isn’t available on used cars, Ford often offers 1.9 or 2.9 percent, and in some cases. 0.9 percent.

Teufer also encouraged would-be buyers who might think they won’t qualify for a car loan.

“John would never expound on his accolades and he had gotten quite a few through the years,” his mother said. “He was very accessible to his technicians.

He was always explaining things to them. He was very approachable.”

Family and faith were equally important to John, said his wife, Ann. He was an active member at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Westfield, Indiana, where his children Carolyn, 24, Will, 16,

cer for all three, as well as baseball and basketball for the boys. To the end – John was 54 when he died March 13 – John remained loyal to Notre Dame sports, especially football, his wife said.

“I had a rich family life with him,” Ann said.

Even though John built his career in Indiana, John felt thankful for his Joliet connections, especially during his illness, Ann said of her husband.

“They were a great support to him,” she said. “People reached out and said they were praying for him. They contacted him on Facebook just to lift him up. He really appreciated that.”

JOLIET – When former Joliet resident Dr. John Bates turned 50, he decided to follow current medical opinion and have a colonoscopy.

To John’s surprise, he had colon cancer.

“He was a very strong healthy man,” said Ann Bates of Joliet, John’s mother. “It was a real shock.”

John, the 1978 valedictorian at Joliet West High School, knew by junior high school that he wanted to be a doctor, his mother said. Of course, John had always done well in school, but John was also an all-around good kid.

“He was not just a student who stuck to his books,” Ann said. “He played sports, had lots of friends and was always able to go along with whatever was expected of him. He never got into trouble.”

Baseball was John’s sport, and he played catcher through his freshmen year at the University of Notre Dame, although John had played basketball at Joliet West High School, too. One day, his mother received a phone call from John. He had quit baseball.

“He wanted to save his hands for being a doctor,” Ann said. “He wanted to help people and thought he had been given the talent to do that.”

It was while studying

medicine at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago that John met his future wife, also named Ann. John’s specialty was cardiology; Ann’s was pediatrics.

Ann immediately liked John, whom she called humble and down to earth, someone with a good sense of humor whose values resonated with hers.

“I knew when I met John that he was a good strong person and would be a faithful husband, someone I could trust,” Ann said.

During this time, John became very interested in cardiology, especially in echocardiology. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. John trained both cardiologists and echo technicians. Graduating cardiology fellows honored John as an outstanding teacher in 2012.

“He was a very good diagnostician,” his mother said.

After his residency at University of North Carolina, John completed a cardiology fellowship at Indiana University. John practiced cardiology at St. Vincent Health in Indiana.

On Oct. 16, the St. Vincent Heart Center hosted a dedication and blessing for the John R. Bates, MD, Center for Diagnostic Cardiac Imaging.

Born: Oct. 2, 1939; In Ottawa, IL Died: Oct. 14, 2014; in New Lenox, IL Barbara J. Dubley Stein passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at Silver Cross Hospital with her loving family and friends surrounding her.

She was born on October 2, 1939, in Ottawa, to Howard M. and Kathryn (Chapman) Dubley.

Barbara graduated from Seneca High School in 1957, and Silver Cross School of Nursing in 1960. She worked at Silver Cross in Recovery for 26 years. After her retirement, she continued her work at McNeal Hospital and Parkside Kidney Stone Center.

Barbara is survived by her two sons, Scott (Robyn) Stein of California, Darren (Kristine) Stein of Lockport; one daughter, Kay (Stein) Rothlisberger of Lockport; best friend and companion, Priscilla Senning; and five grandchildren, Katlin, Madeline, Roman, Bronson, and Gannon Stein.

Barbara is also survived by her four sisters, Betty Cheshareck of Morris, Sandra (John) Ellis of Seneca, Karen (David) Anderson of Seneca, and Linda Fryer of Frankfort, Indiana; numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lockport, where she served as Sunday school superintendent and music teacher for many years. She also participated in the church choir, United Methodist Women’s group, was chair of the mission committee, and cooked countless amounts of dinners at the church.

Barbara lived in Illinois six months out of the year, and spent her other six months in beautiful Santa Barbara, California, where she also attended the methodist church.

Barbara was always smiling and singing. She never met anyone she did not like, or could not talk to. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed by all.

Cremation rights have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Prairie Bluff Golf Course, located on Renwick Road in Lockport. There will be a small service held at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of your choice, or American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, American Heart Association or The First United Methodist Church of Lockport.

MARGARET M. SPLANT Margaret “Marge” M. (Callan) Splant, age76, late of Lockport, passed peacefully with her family by her side Friday October 24, 2014, at Parc of Joliet. Born in Chicago.

Margaret was an avid gardener and horse rider she also enjoyed reading.

Preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mildred (Burke) Callan, Richard J. Splant Sr.; and a brother, Harold.

Survived by her children, Rick (Carol), Marcia (Steve) Brazzale, Mike, Julie (Dave) Wooldridge, Becky (Mitchell) Pomper, Mary (Jack) Kraus, Kristie (Bob) Bato and Kelly; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard (Angela) Callan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at 9:30 a.m., from the O’NEIL FUNERAL HOME, 1105 E. 9TH ST (159TH ST) to St. Joseph Church, Lockport, for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m.

Lorraine June Zola, nee Baxter, age 83, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014, at Silver Cross Hospital.

Born May 17, 1931, in Aurora, IL. She was previously employed by First National Bank, retired from Joliet Arsenal and was the treasurer of her condo association. She enjoyed spending time at the river and was an avid Cubs fan who never missed a game. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she enjoyed spending time with.

George K. Carlin “Ki”, age 74, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at his home.

Ki was born in Joliet to Dr. and Mrs. George W. Carlin on June 12, 1940, and spent his entire lifetime in Joliet.

Ki is survived by his son, Christopher G. Carlin, of Bellevue, Washington; his brother, Jay Carlin; and his loving companion and best friend, Joan Paul. Ki was beloved Grandpa to Cameron, Stewart, and Tristan Paul and Connor and Sydney Tomasko. Several cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, Judge and Mrs. Frederick Adams and Dr. and Mrs. Charles J. Carlin.

Ki was a 1958 graduate of Joliet Township High School and a 1963 graduate of MacMurray College.

He was employed by the First Midwest Bank in Joliet and retired in 2002 from J.P. Morgan Chase Bank in Chicago. He was an avid golfer who was known for his love of the game, great sportsmanship, and kind and gentle personality.

Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd. Tuesday, October 28 at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Dr. Craig M. Herr officiating. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park. Memorials to First Presbyterian Church will be appreciated. Visitation will be held Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 am until time of services.

Quinn, Rauner speak at African-American churches

CHICAGO – The two candidates in the tight race for Illinois governor spent Sunday courting parishioners at African-American churches as they battle for every vote in the final stretch of the campaign.

Republican Bruce Rauner spoke Sunday at New Beginnings Church of Christ on Chicago’s South Side, as he pledged his commitment to black communities. Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn appeared at Community Covenant Church in suburban Calumet Park, where he continued to call for raising the state’s minimum wage.

With African-American turnout considered key to Quinn’s narrow victory over Republican Bill Brady in 2010, both sides have made courting the demographic a key focus in recent weeks.

President Barack Obama headlined a get-out-the-vote rally for Quinn last Sunday, largely attended by blacks and featuring several other leading African-American politicians. Rauner has drawn together a contingent of black ministers and businessmen who say the Democratic governor failed to deliver on promises over the past four years.

On Sunday, Rauner, a wealthy Winnetka businessman, attempted to push past the partisan as he quoted the Bible and pledged work to give back to the state where he has made millions.

“Our Lord God has not put us on this earth as Democrats and Republicans,” Rauner said to the congregation. “He put us on this earth to take care of each other.”

He highlighted his philanthropic commitment to education, including endowing a professorship at historically black Morehouse College in Atlanta.

SIU studying sale of Asian carp in China

GRAFTON – Scholars at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale are studying how to make U.S. wild-caught Asian carp freshly available to consumers in Asia.

The main goal is to figure out how to ship what’s considered an invasive species in the American Midwest to China where it is a delicacy. The trick is to ship whole bodies of the fish on ice and flash-frozen thousands of miles because Asian consumers are used to buying fresh fish at

open markets.

That process needs perfecting, said postdoctoral fellow Marybeth Brey with the university’s Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences. She is working with the center’s interim vice chancellor of research, Jim Garvey, who also is a fisheries professor.

They also are looking at the costs of exporting the fish, The Alton Telegraph reported.

Export, import and tariffs charges are making the costs of shipping the fish too high to make a profit, Brey said.

Once Week 9 is in the books, all you have for evidence of where you belong is your record. Playoff points – the tiebreaker within a given record – are all about how many games your opponents happen to win.

Thirteen Joliet area schools qualified for the playoffs, which begin this weekend. We entered the final weekend with 16 potential qualifiers, but Minooka, Plainfield South and Seneca failed to get their necessary fifth victories.

Those who did get in now know where and against whom they will play their opening-round games.

They also know the path they must travel to reach the ultimate goal, Thanksgiving weekend in Champaign.

The subjective part of the process comes from the Illinois High School Association’s use of quadrants, 16-team groupings or a combination of the two within each class.

Depending on that determination, the difficulty of a team’s playoff path

can be altered significantly.

There is talk that the state may revert to a system in the future where it seeds teams 1 through 32 in each class and goes from there, with 1 opening at 32, 2 at 31, etc. But for now, the geographical element is involved.

Our qualifiers are Joliet West (5-4) and Bolingbrook (6-3) in Class 8A; Providence (8-1), Lincoln-Way East (8-1), Plainfield East (7-2), Lincoln-Way Central (5-4) and Plainfield North (6-3) in Class 7A; Lincoln-Way West (8-1) and Lemont (9-0) in Class 6A; JCA (7-2) and Morris (5-4) in Class 5A; Coal City (7-2) in Class 4A; and Wilmington (9-0) in Class 3A. All things considered, our teams came out looking good in terms of their potential opponents along the way. Not that anything will be easy, but rest assured, it could have been worse. Let’s take a look.

Class 8A: Joliet West saying it will go anywhere for its first playoff game is understandable, but I feel the Tigers’ chances to win at Edwardsville (8-1) would have been minimal. Now, they visit the quadrant’s No. 1 seed, Oswego, for a game where they can compete. If their defense can come up with its best game, who knows?

“Sports really matters in this country, and that gives us the opportunity to do something with it, to make it a beautiful experience, rather than an ugly one.”

In a time when there seems to be increasing negativity in many aspects of life, Thompson hopes that PCA’s approach – if embraced by those involved in athletics – can result in more positive interactions in the future.

“Some of the people who have the most power are athletic directors and leaders of soccer clubs and Little Leagues, etc., they set the culture, the way that we do things,” Thompson said. “And coaches can also have a huge impact.

“If we can get athletes to understand what a ‘Triple-Impact Competitor’ is – make yourself better, your teammates better and the game better – and they aspire to do that, wow.

“Think about the business leaders and political leaders that we have and how many of them seem to have very narrow interests. What if we had ‘Triple-Impact Competitors’ going to Congress or becoming mayors?”

Although Thompson comes from an academic background at Stanford University, he was both an athlete and a coach, so his organization’s hopes for the change are not just theoretical but rather grounded in possibility.

“Long-term, we want to see the ‘Double-Goal Coach’ who helps his team win and teaches life lessons, and the ‘Triple-Impact Competitor,’ to be community standards all around the country,” Thompson said.

“If we can do that, then things will be very different.

“We need a movement of lots and lots of people. That includes athletes’ parents who want to be a part of it,

Lewis Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek is a supporter of Thompson’s efforts and was happy to see him speak on campus.

“The more that you look at the people that have been deeply involved with Jim and the Positive Coaching Alliance, you have a great alignment of coaches because they believe in the message,” Planek said.

“And whether the message is at the youth, high school or collegiate level, it still resonates.

“If you have a great college experience, you more than likely will be a strong alum.

So it tends to be in line with our mission, so I think it’s good to be reinforced in this way.”

ROMEOVILLE – No one ever said changing the culture of youth and high school athletics in this country would be easy.

But in an interactive discussion last week at Lewis University’s Phillip Lynch Theatre to several student-athletes, coaches and administrators, a major proponent for just such a change emphatically stated his case.

Jim Thompson, the founder and CEO of Positive Coaching Alliance, talked about shifting the prevalent win-at-all-cost mindset to his organization’s goal of creating “Better Athletes, Better People” through a positive, character-building experience.

Since 1998, the nonprofit group has worked with organizations and schools through a variety of tools – including its

website, www.positivecoach. org – in an effort to bring about a positive change in youth sports.

Backed by a national advisory board that features a collection of outstanding coaches and athletes, PCA appears intent on succeeding in its mission.

After emphasizing his case for the need for the “Triple-Impact Competitor” – athletes who strive to make themselves, their teammates and the game better – Thompson talked about the work that still needs to be done to bring about lasting change, “Youth sports is a major institution in this country – with 40 million kids playing at any given time – and there’s 4 to 6 million coaches with parents also involved,” Thompson said. “If we can change youth sports, it actually will filter through, and it will change the whole country.

Could Trestman be Bears’ biggest problem?

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The Bears will have two long, agonizing weeks to decide if their 51-23 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday was the beginning of the end, or a chance to forge a new beginning.

The Bears’ problem in Foxborough, Massachusetts, wasn’t that Brandon Marshall had a little temper tantrum the week before and a number of his teammates didn’t know how to react.

The problem against the Pats was the Bears ran into a bunch of guys who really aren’t all that much more talented than them individually, but are far superior football players, and a dramatically better team.

Sure, Rob Gronkowski and Darrelle Revis are incomparable. But do the Patriots have any running backs that stand up next to Matt Forte or receivers as good as Marshall or Alshon Jeffery?

Obviously, I’m not going to compare quarterbacks, but how much do you think Tom

Brady would enjoy having Jay Cutler’s arm and/or athletic ability? The only one keeping Cutler from closing the gap on Brady is Cutler, and wasn’t coach Marc Trestman supposed to fix that?

The Bears’ and Patriots’ offensive lines are comparable at the least, and with Chandler Jones out, the Bears probably have more talent on the defensive line than the Pats.

New England is a little better at linebacker and in the rest of its secondary, but there certainly isn’t enough of a talent gap to explain why the Bears were embarrassed so badly Sunday.

This is not an attempt to suggest the gap between the Patriots and the Bears isn’t as great as Sunday’s game suggests. The difference between these two teams right now is probably even greater than that.

But seven weeks ago, the Patriots led the Miami Dolphins, a team that isn’t nearly as talented as the Bears by a 20-3 score before the Dolphins outscored them 30-0 for a 33-20 upset that embarrassed New England as badly as they embarrassed the Bears.

Patriots went into Kansas City on a Monday night and got trounced, 41-14, in one of the worst beatings of Brady’s and coach Bill Belichick’s careers.

The Pats were 2-2, and predictions of the fall of the Patriot empire and demise of Brady dominated headlines.

Since then, New England has won four straight, including demolitions of the 4-2-1 Bengals and 5-3 Bills, and Brady is suddenly an MVP candidate again.

The biggest difference between the Patriots and Bears

is Belichick and Trestman.

No, it isn’t fair to compare Trestman halfway through his second season to a future Hall of Famer and possibly the best coach of all time in Belichick.

But when you stack Trestman’s roster against the Patriots’ and see what Belichick has accomplished in the past four weeks when faced with similar challenges, it’s impossible not to come to the conclusion Trestman is the key to the Bears’ current dilemma.

If Cutler has grown at all under Trestman, you need a

microscope to measure it.

Sure, Marshall is more than a handful and a giant pain in the butt, but everyone had to know that when Trestman was hired.

The Bears have had injuries, but none that match the gravity of losing a Jerrod Mayo, Stevan Ridley and Chandler Jones. It’s Trestman’s job to overcome them.

When Trestman was hired, there was no debate over whether he knew offense or football, it was whether he could handle 53 players and a locker room.

I believe it’s way too early to give up on him, but his next test is awfully clear.

As we all engaged in our silly preseason predicting, I had the Bears at 4-5 coming out of Lambeau Field and winning six of their last seven to claim a wild card spot at 10-6.

Why can’t it still be done?

The question is if Trestman is up to the challenge, and if he can coach, and lead Cutler, Marshall and company to where they need to go.

Defense sets wrong kinds of records

“We got our butts kicked today, plain and simple.”

Allen and the Bears’ defense couldn’t stop Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Brandon LaFell and the Patriots’ offense in the beat-down. The Bears set franchise records in first-half points allowed (38), passing first downs allowed (25) and opposing completion percentage (86.8).

“It was one of those situations where I felt we were in second-and-short or third-andshort all game,” Allen said.

“Those are tough ways to do it, and we have got to figure out a way.”

The defensive line didn’t pressure Brady, let alone record a single quarterback hit on the future Hall of Famer. The secondary didn’t do much better, collecting zero passes defensed.

The only player to deflect a pass was linebacker Christian Jones.

“I’ll keep it as simple as I can. We got beat today, obviously, in all three phases,” said

coach Marc Trestman, as the Bears head into the bye with a 3-5 record. “We started slow and we couldn’t keep up the pace.

Credit has to go to New England for the job that they did today.”

Brady-to-Gronk could not be defended, with Ryan Mundy often in coverage, only to see Gronkowski pluck the ball out of the air. He caught all nine passes thrown his way for 149 yards and three touchdowns.

“You saw it. You see the struggles [covering Gronkowski]. There’s a size matchup when you have him man-toman,” Trestman said. “We had him covered man-to-man by two to three different players.

As I said, Tom made meticulous throws, he was on target even when he was covered. So, you have to give him credit for that.”

On Gronkowski’s first touchdown, Mundy appeared to be step-for-step in coverage, but Brady dropped the ball into Gronkowski’s arms. “[Brady] always put it in a good location where he can catch it. [Gronkowski] knows how to use his body, and they did that today,” he said. “I have to do a better job of anticipating and try and swat the ball.”

Of LaFell’s 11 targets, he caught all of them for 124 yards, with Brady going after Kyle Fuller, and then undrafted rookie Al Louis-Jean, who replaced Fuller (hip) in the second quarter.

Injury concerns: In addition to Fuller, Darryl Sharpton (hamstring), Lamarr Houston (knee) and Matt Slauson (pectoral) left the game and did not return. Houston will have an MRI on Monday, and Slauson was seen wearing a sling on his right shoulder. Trestman did not have any updates, but when asked about Houston’s injury, which occurred during a sack celebration, Trestman said, “I’m disappointed for Lamarr.”

Bye week plan: The Bears will report to Halas Hall on Monday but then will have the rest of the week off before returning to work Nov. 3 to get ready for the Packers. “We have to decide how we want to end this year and how we want to do in this second half,” quarterback Jay Cutler said. “Do we want to just pack it in and hover around .500, maybe a little bit below, or do we want to use the talent in that locker room to try and make a run for this?”

Earnhardt wins on 10th anniversary of plane crash

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned his fourth win of the season Sunday at Martinsville Speedway in an emotional victory a week after he was eliminated from the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Jeff Gordon was second, giving Hendrick Motorsports a 1-2 finish on the 10-year anniversary weekend of the fatal plane crash that killed 10 people on their way to the speedway. Lost on that day were team owner Rick Hendrick’s son, brother, twin nieces, the team general manger, head engine builder, a key sponsor representative, two Hendrick pilots and a pilot for Tony Stewart.

“This means so much to all of us,” Earnhardt said. “I lost my daddy a long time ago, and I know how hard that is. I can’t imagine losing the amount of people Rick lost. My heart goes out to him during this weekend. This honors them.”

Gordon was the highest finishing Chase driver. Without a Chase driver in Victory Lane, no driver clinched an automatic berth in the Nov. 16 championship finale at Homestead.

“That means so much to Hendrick Motorsports,” Gordon said. “That’s the best way you can possibly pay tribute to those that we lost 10 years ago.

To have a 1-2 finish, that’s pretty awesome. I would have loved to have gotten that win to move on to Homestead, but this is certainly a great start for us.”

Running fifth, Stewart gambled and stayed on the track after the race was red-flagged with 10 laps left. Earnhardt and Gordon pitted for fresh tires, and that one final stop was just enough for the successful finish.

“If we had to do that 100 times over, we’d do the same thing,” Stewart said. “We didn’t have anything to lose. It was worth the gamble. “This is as good as a win to me.”

Other Chase driver results included Denny Hamlin eighth, Carl Edwards 20th, Brad Keselowski 31st and Kevin Harvick 33rd.

Harvick crashed just past the halfway point when he

had contact with Kenseth following a restart. It made for a mixed day for Stewart-Haas Racing: Team co-owner Stewart scored his first top-five finish since March, but Harvick’s championship chances took a huge hit.

Harvick had to take his car to the garage, where crew members from all of SHR’s teams worked furiously to repair the damage and get him back on the track. Even competition director Greg Zipadelli was working on the Chevrolet, which received significant repairs before Harvick returned to the race, down 40 laps.

“Yeah, he won’t win this championship,” Harvick said of Kenseth. “If we don’t, he won’t.”

Added Harvick crew chief Rodney Childers: “He just flatout wrecked us. It’s a bad deci-

sion on his part, for sure.”

Kenseth called the race “one of the lowlights of my career,” and said he understood Harvick’s frustration.

“I don’t blame him for feeling like that, to be honest with you. It was a mistake,” Kenseth said. “He was an innocent bystander, at the wrong place at the wrong time. I totally understand how he feels, I totally understand why he would say that, I totally get it.

“He knows it’s a mistake, too, but that doesn’t really help him. I don’t blame him.

He got taken out of the race for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Harvick likely needs to win at either Texas Motor Speedway next week or Phoenix International Raceway to advance to the finale.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Survey: Gas prices drop 18 cents in 2 weeks CAMARILLO, Calif. – A national survey of gas prices reports that the average cost of U.S. regular grade gas dropped 18 cents per gallon in the last two weeks.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the average for regular grade gas is $3.08 per gallon, while midgrade averages $3.31 and premium $3.47. Retail diesel averages $3.67.

Lundberg said the price has dropped 65 cents since its peak in May and is 29 cents below what it was last year.

She said the drop has been driven by a decrease in the price of crude oil. She forecasts minimal further cuts if prices remain stable. In the Lower 48 states, San Francisco had the highest average price at $3.45 per gallon, while Memphis, Tennessee, had the lowest average at $2.73.

Hawaii volcano lava prompts concerns Dozens of residents in a rural area of Hawaii were placed on alert as flowing lava from an erupting volcano continued to advance.

Authorities Sunday said lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii had advanced about 250 yards since Saturday morning and was moving at the rate of about 10 to 15 yards an hour, consistent with its advancement in recent days.

The flow front passed through a predominantly Buddhist cemetery, covering grave sites in the mostly rural region of Puna, and was roughly a half-mile from

Pahoa Village Road, the main street of Pahoa.

Darryl Oliveira, director of civil defense for Hawaii County, told reporters during a late Sunday morning teleconference that the nearest home was at least 300 yards from the flow front. He planned to get better coordinates during a flight later in the day.

Oliveira estimated there were at least 50 to 60 structures, including homes and businesses, in the area most likely to be impacted.

New home test shakes up colon cancer screening Starting Monday, millions of people who have avoided colon cancer screening can get a new home test that’s noninvasive and doesn’t require the icky preparation most other methods do.

The test is the first to look for cancer-related DNA in stool. But deciding whether to get it is a more complex choice than ads for “the breakthrough test ... that’s as easy as going to the bathroom” make it seem.

On one hand, the test could greatly boost screening for a deadly disease that too few people get checked for now.

On the other hand, it could lure people away from colonoscopies and other tests that, unlike the new one, have been shown to save lives.

It might even do both.

“It looks promising,” but its impact on cancer risk and survival isn’t known, said Dr. Barnett Kramer, a National Cancer Institute screening expert.

By ELENA BECATOROS and BASSEM MROUE The Associated Press MURSITPINAR, Turkey – A Syrian activist group said Sunday that the death toll in 40 days of fighting in and around the northern Syrian border town of Kobani has reached 815, as Kurdish fighters battled Muslim militants for a hill west of the town.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the death toll includes 21 Kurdish civilians and 302 fighters with the main Kurdish force known as the Peoples Protection Units, or YPG. It said 481 fighters with the Islamic State group have been killed since the battles began.

IS fighters launched a wide offensive on Kobani in mid-September capturing dozens of Kurdish villages and entering parts of the town. The attack has displaced more than 200,000 people who crossed for safety in

Turkey.

On Saturday, IS launched an attack on a Kurdish-held neighborhood in Kobani without succeeding in advancing, the Observatory said. It added that seven IS fighters were killed as well as several YPG fighters.

An Associated Press reporter on the Turkish side of the border said occasional mortar fire could be heard in the center and west of the town as well as occasional gunfire. At least one airstrike was carried out by the U.S.led coalition.

The U.S. Central Command said in a statement that five airstrikes near Kobani destroyed seven IS vehicles and an IS building. It said the five airstrikes were conducted on Saturday and Sunday.

Last week, the U.S. Central Command said that its forces conducted more than 135 airstrikes against the militants in and around Kobani, killing hundreds of IS fighters.

official from Kobani, said the fighting concentrated Sunday on the Izaa hill west, of the town. That area is close to the strategic Tel Shair hill, which overlooks parts of the town.

Kurdish fighters recently regained control of the Tel Shair hill.

“The units [YPG] are advancing slowly on the eastern and southern fronts,” Nassan said. “The situation is relatively calm compared with yesterday.”

The Observatory said YPG fighters attacked two IS vehicles west of Kobani Sunday inflicting casualties among jihadis.

Also Sunday, state news agency SANA reported that rebels in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo fired two mortar shells, killing an adult and a child and wounding several others when they hit a school.

The Observatory said one of the shells hit the Hoda Shaarawi school, while the second fell in front of it.

By MARTHA BELLISLE and NIGEL DUARA The Associated Press TULALIP, Wash. – A close-knit community on the Tulalip Indian Reservation has struggled to find answers following the shooting at a high school on Washington’s Puget Sound in which a young gunman from a prominent family opened fire, killing one person and injuring four others – including two of his cousins.

“What triggered him?

That’s what we need to find out,” asked state Sen. John McCoy, a tribal member.

“Because from all we have determined, he was a happygo-lucky, normal kid.”

The shooter, who also died in the attack, was Jaylen Fryberg, a popular freshman at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, a government official with direct knowledge of the

shooting told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

As the community coped and the investigation continued, a newly hired teacher was being hailed as a hero for confronting the gunman in the busy school cafeteria.

First-year social studies teacher Megan Silberberger intervened in the attack in Marysville, 30 miles north of Seattle, teachers union president Randy Davis said.

The teacher intercepted the gunman as he paused, possibly to reload, student Erick Cervantes told KIROTV. “I’m completely amazed by her actions, and I feel for her,” Davis told The Associated Press. “I don’t know why she was in the cafeteria, but I’m just grateful she was there.”

A school resource officer also ran to the scene, Davis said.

Davis said he had spoken briefly with Silberberger, who was traumatized. The Marysville School District released a statement in which the teacher thanked people for support and asked for privacy.

Of the four surviving students, Nate Hatch, 14, remained in serious condition and was improving Sunday in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Andrew Fryberg, 15, remained in critical condition in intensive care, the hospital said. Both are cousins of Jaylen Fryberg.

Shaylee Chuckulnaskit and Gia Soriano, both 14, remained in critical condition Sunday at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Both were in intensive care, the hospital said.

New York and New Jersey “not grounded in science” and has conveyed its concerns to Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, said a senior administration official. The

official wasn’t authorized to comment by name and insisted on anonymity.

Fauci made the rounds on five major Sunday morning talk shows to argue that policy should be driven by science – and that science says people with the virus are not contagious until symptoms appear.

And even then, infection requires direct contact with bodily fluids.

He said that close monitoring of medical workers for symptoms is sufficient, and warned that forcibly separating them from others, or quarantining them, for three weeks could cripple the fight against the outbreak in West Africa – an argument that humanitarian medical organizations have also made.

“If we don’t have our people volunteering to go over there, then you’re going to have other countries that are not going to do it and then the epidemic will continue to roar,” Fauci said.

Two exit polls released as voting closed indicated that President Petro Poroshenko’s party will secure a narrow win in the parliamentary election, falling substantially short of an outright majority. Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s Popular Front followed close behind.

Although they lead rival parties, Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk share pro-Western sentiments and have campaigned on reform agendas aimed at pulling Ukraine back from the brink of economic ruin. The parties are expected to join forces with other re-

form-oriented groups to form a broad pro-European coalition.

Talking to supporters at his party headquarters, a visibly ebullient Poroshenko said coalition talks will start Monday and will last no longer than 10 days.

Almost three million people were unable to vote in eastern regions still gripped with unrest as government troops continue to wage almost daily battle against pro-Russian separatists.

The vote Sunday will substantially overhaul a legislature once dominated by loyalists of ousted former president Viktor Yanukovych.

NEW YORK – The gulf between politicians and scientists over Ebola widened Sunday as the nation’s top infectious-disease expert warned that the mandatory, 21-day quarantining of medical workers returning from West Africa is unnecessary and could discourage volunteers from traveling to the danger zone.

“The best way to protect us is to stop the epidemic in Africa, and we need those health care workers, so we do not want to put them in a position where it makes it very, very uncomfortable for them to even volunteer to go,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Meanwhile, Kaci Hickox, the first nurse forcibly quarantined in New Jersey under the state’s new policy, said in a telephone interview with

CNN that her isolation at a hospital was “inhumane,” adding: “We have to be very careful about letting politicians make health decisions.”

Saying the federal health guidelines are inadequate, the governors of New York and New Jersey announced a mandatory quarantine program Friday for medical workers and other arriving airline passengers who have had contact with Ebola victims in West Africa, and Illinois soon followed suit. Twenty-one days is the incubation period for Ebola.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Sunday defended quarantining as necessary to protect the public and predicted it “will become a national policy sooner rather than later.”

Cuba stalemate makes ID of rafters difficult

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO The Associated Press MIAMI – The bodies surfaced 20 miles out from a popular South Florida beach: four men, still youthful. Their remains were badly deteriorated, bitten by sharks, their faces unrecognizable.

One had a horseshoe-shaped scar on his head. Two bore tattoos: one of a spider, the other of a tiger with a flower.

The fourth wore a pair of orange briefs and a gold-colored watch.

The Coast Guard delivered them to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, where they remained for days, among the thousands who have died trying to cross the turbulent Florida Straits.

The remains of rafters that surface near the U.S. often are in such poor condition they cannot be visually identified.

“The standard means of identification aren’t going to work,” said Larry Cameron, operations director for the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department.

Many rafters who flee Cuba simply disappear; but when bodies are found, they often have no documents, leaving a puzzle of scars, tattoos, surgeries and clothing.

Sometimes, relatives in the

U.S. emerge and can provide a DNA match. Others remain unidentified; and since Florida law forbids their cremation, the bones are stored in morgues for years. The Broward morgue has bodies dating back to the 1970s. Many others are buried in paupers’ cemeteries after DNA is extracted, labeled only by a number, “and we never know that those rafters didn’t get lost at sea,” said Ramon Saul Sanchez, president of the Democracy Movement exile group.

Identifying these bodies has become a priority again for Florida’s medical examiners amid a 75 percent increase this year in the number of Cubans trying to cross by sea. At least 3,722 Cubans have been intercepted or made it to U.S. shores in the last fiscal year.

The U.S. Coast Guard has intercepted 72,771 Cubans at sea in the last three decades.

Thousands of others made it to U.S. shores or were prevented by Cuban authorities from leaving. Scholars estimate at least 1 in 4 Cuban rafters don’t survive, which could mean 18,000 have died.

WASHINGTON – Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is “moving forward” on a potential 2016 White House run and it appears more likely he will enter the Republican field, according to his son, who’s running for office in Texas.

George P. Bush told ABC’s “This Week” his father is “still assessing” a presidential bid, but suggested it was more likely he would seek the White House this time.

The ex-governor declined to run for president in 2012 despite encouragement from Republicans.

“I think it’s more than likely that he’s giving this a serious thought and moving – and moving forward,” said the younger Bush, a Texas land commissioner candidate.

Asked if that meant it was “more than likely that he’ll run,” George P. Bush responded: “That he’ll run. If you had asked me a few years back ... I would have said it was less likely.”

WASHINGTON – Gov. Chris Christie on Sunday said Republicans had positioned themselves to succeed in gubernatorial races in Democratic-leaning states carried by President Barack Obama, an effort that could burnish the New Jersey Republican’s potential 2016 presidential bid.

Christie said in an interview with “Fox News Sunday” that Republicans face a “daunting task” in defending 22 of 36 governor’s seats in November’s election. But he noted competitive campaigns in Michigan, Massachusetts, Illinois and Connecticut as fresh evidence of Republican offense heading into the campaign’s final week.

The head of the Republican Governors Association, Christie dismissed criticism his organization had not done enough to support embattled Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, another potential 2016 GOP presidential contender.

“I am a complete Scott Walker supporter, always have been, and we’re going to work as hard as we can to make sure he’s re-elected, and I believe he will be re-elected,” Christie said.

Toronto voters look to anyone besides yet another Ford

By ROB GILLIES The Associated Press TORONTO – Enough with the crack smoking, public drunkenness and outrageous behavior. After four years in which City Hall sometimes has been as entertaining as a circus sideshow, Toronto residents appear eager for something altogether different in their mayor: DULL. Voters head to the polls Monday to elect a successor to Rob Ford, who announced last month he would not seek re-election as he battles a rare and difficult form of cancer. His brother, City Councilor Doug Ford, is running in his place but is expected widely to lose to John Tory, a wealthy, straightlaced moderate conservative who stands in contrast to the pugnacious, populist Ford brothers.

Analysts say Olivia Chow, a leftist candidate and the widow of late popular Canadian politician Jake Layton, seems to have lost momentum as a candidate as people look to vote strategically to ensure Doug Ford doesn’t win.

City Councilor Jaye Robinson, a one-time Ford ally who now supports Tory, said folks just want to make sure a Ford isn’t mayor.

“People are literally counting down. Every door I go to, they are counting

down. They are feeling that this is going to be transformative moment in our city where we right the ship, we focus on city building and we leave the sideshow, the circus, the distractions behind,” Robinson said. If Tory wins, she said, “there will be a collective sigh of relief across the entire city.”

A record 161,147 people turned out for early voting this month, more than double the number in the last election, in 2010. Among them was Kaye Wilkinson, a retiree who lives in Etobicoke, the middle-class western Toronto suburb that is home to the Ford family.

“We have to get rid of the Fords. I don’t care who is running,” Wilkinson said.

“The top runner, we don’t care what their policies are, but we wanted to make sure we got rid of the Fords.”

Marianne Davis, 62, a retired principal who lives in Etobicoke, also voted early.

“I’m tired of all the shenanigans that have been going on at City Hall, so I voted for Tory,” Davis said.

“I get tired of traveling and people asking me about my mayor.”

Ford’s tenure as mayor of Canada’s largest city was marred by his drinking problems and illegal drug use. He was videotaped and photographed repeatedly while intoxicated in public.

Be an audience.”

At the bridge table, when on defense, you need to be both an actress – or actor, of course – and an audience. You take the lead role to steer partner’s defense, then you sit back and watch her – or him – execute the lethal line.

In this example deal, how should the defense proceed against one notrump after West leads the spade ace?

West might make a penalty double of one no-trump. If his partner has a few of the outstanding high cards, the contract will probably go down. And if partner is weak, he might be able to run to a long suit. The bad scenario is when East has a weak, balanced hand. Then one no-trump doubled will probably come home, perhaps with an overtrick.

At trick one, East must signal with the 10, high to encourage.

First, let’s suppose that West cashes his spade king and plays another spade. East will win with his queen and cash the nine, but what will he do next?

Given his hand and the dummy, he is likely to shift to the diamond jack.

Then, though, South will take the next seven tricks with two diamonds and five clubs. How does East know that he needs to switch to a heart?

He doesn’t – but West does. Before leading the second or third spade, West should cash the heart king (remember, lead king from ace-king and king-queen after trick one). Then East will know to return a heart and the defenders will take the first seven tricks for down one.

Dear Abby: We have a neighbor who “decorates” his yard for Halloween in the worst way imaginable.

Every year it becomes more macabre. He has “bodies” hanging from tree limbs, gravestones with RIP on dirt mounds and other unbelievable atrocities. He thinks it’s funny. It is despicable and it scares the children who must walk past his yard.

When we ask him not to put such deplorable items in our neighborhood, he doesn’t take it seriously.

I’m thinking about taking up a collection and bribing him not to put his growing, vulgar display up this year.

Should I extend the usual invitation and hope for the best? Or should I not invite either of them to avoid the possible conflict?

I will not take sides. I think both of them are being petty and childish, but I also don’t know what to do.

Dear Abby: When my husband and I were 18, we decided to have each other’s initials tattooed on our ring fingers. His tattoo included the initial that one day became my last name. It’s been 10 years and our marriage is still solid and beautiful.

I have worked hard at a nursing career, but I feel self-conscious about my tattoo, although I now wear rings as well. I still like my tattoo, but I don’t want people judging me because of it. My husband says I’ll only hurt myself if I remove something I love having.

10. Closing shall take place within eighteen (18) months of acceptance of the bid. A finalized Contract for Sale shall be completed between the parties no later than thirty (30) days after bid acceptance. A copy of the Contract for Sale to be entered into by the Board of Education and the successful bidder shall be available for inspection at the Administrative Offices of the Board of Education.

11. All information about the property included in this Notice of Sale is believed to be reliable, but is not guaranteed and no express or implied representations or warranties are made with regard to the property or matters relating thereto, or terms contained herein.

The property will be sold and conveyed to the successful bidder (the “Buyer”) on an “AS IS” basis without any representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, either oral or written, made by the Board of Education or the School District with respect to the physical, environmental, zoning or structural condition of the property or with respect to the existence or absence of underground fuel storage tanks, toxic or hazardous materials, substances or wastes in, on, under or affecting the property, including but not limited to, asbestos about or on the property, and subject to existing zoning, flood plain and any other restrictions on the use or development of the property. All warranties with respect to the property are hereby expressly disclaimed. Except as provided below regarding the scope of Buyer's indemnity commitment, any risk and all responsibility relating to any condition of the property, including, but not limited to any of the above-described conditions, are assumed by Buyer and disclaimed by the Board of Education and the School District.

All bidders are urged to examine the property and conduct their own inspection and investigation of the property (including, without limitation, environmental inspections and investigations). The Buyer shall take all necessary action and bear all expenses and liability associated with making the property suitable for the Buyer's intended use and complying with all applicable law. Further, upon closing, as between Buyer and the Board of Education and the School District, Buyer shall bear all responsibility, liability and obligation for the physical, environmental, zoning and structural condition of the property and the taxable, non-residential development, business or operations to be located on the property. Buyer waives, generally releases and covenants not to sue or make any claim whatsoever against the Board of Education and the School District regarding the foregoing matters and all matters within the scope of the following indemnity commitment, including, but not limited to, any claim by Buyer against the Board of Education or the School District resulting from a third-party claim against Buyer due to the negligent or unlawful acts or omissions of the Board of Education or the School District. Buyer shall, at its sole cost and expense, unconditionally indemnify, defend and hold the Board of Education and the School District harmless from and against any loss, liability, damage (whether or not ultimately successful), penalties, fines, injunctions, suits, proceedings, disbursements or expenses (including without limitation, attorneys' and experts' fees and disbursements and court costs) arising under any present or future local, state or federal law (and the amendments, regulations, orders or decrees promulgated thereunder) which may be incurred by or against the Board of Education or the School District directly or indirectly resulting from the condition of the property including, but not limited to, the presence and/or removal of asbestos, environmental hazards and/or the presence or removal of underground fuel storage tanks, except to the extent a claim is made directly against the Board of Education or the School District and is determined by a court of competent jurisdiction to arise directly from the unlawful acts or omissions of the Board of Education or the School District prior to closing. Buyer's obligations, indemnification and risk with respect to the condition of the property under this paragraph shall survive the closing of the sale of the property, and shall not merge in the deed.

12. All sealed bids, notices or documents required to be provided herein, shall be made by certified mail or registered mail, postage prepaid, return receipt requested.
