PLAINFIELD – James Waldorf – a former village president and longtime principal at Plainfield schools – is being remembered by friends and family this week as a warm-hearted, dedicated public servant who always put his community James Waldorf before himself.

The 73-yearold died Tuesday after a yearslong battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to his wife of more than 26 years, Mary Ann Waldorf.

The Rev. David Medow, pastor at St. Mary Immaculate, said Waldorf presided over St. Mary during a “critical time,” having overseen the school’s expansion after the tornado’s destruction.

In honor of all he did for the school, St. Mary Immaculate years ago named a large gathering space at the school as the Waldorf Room.

“He was a very warm person who was always interested in the people around him. He was extraordinarily dedicated to education and the children at St. Mary’s,” Medow said Wednesday. “He knew so many people in the community. He knew their needs, their stories, their life situations. It was easy for him to connect with people.”

Waldorf was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2009 at the end

of his one, four-year term as village president, Mary Ann Waldorf said. Before that, he served a two-year term as a village trustee.

Tom Hernandez, spokesman for Plainfield School District 202, said Waldorf also was very active in the community, volunteering with the Rotary Club, Salvation Army, Kiwanis Club, Knights of Columbus, Exchange Club, C.W. Avery YMCA and Plainfield Alliance to Nurture Diversity Awareness.

Waldorf’s wake will be held from 2 to 8 pm. Sunday at Overman-Jones Funeral Home in Plainfield. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Immaculate Parish.

Plainfield library survey results, public meetings reveal points of campaign focus

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Among the most important factors for Plainfield Public Library District residents about plans for reconstructing the library were design and parking, according to feedback from recent public meetings and phone survey results.

The library board Wednesday heard presentations from a research group and the architecture firm hired to help the library plan a ballot referendum to fund construction of a new library.

Trustees also gave recommendations on how much more detail the plans need to get before springing their informational campaign.

“We’re working on developing a calendar of meetings ... between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28,” library Director Julie Milavec said about reaching out to pockets of communities in the district.

His time as a local principal included the Aug. 28, 1990, tornado and its aftermath.

After the tornado destroyed the high school and much of the town, Waldorf was credited for overseeing efforts to relocate the school to the former Joliet Catholic Academy.

Then, he took over as principal at St. Mary Immaculate after the then-principal died in the 1990 tornado.

Mary Ann Waldorf said her husband’s legacy is evidenced in years’ worth of stories from past students who stop in at the Gourmet Junction, the sandwich shop she owns in town.

“The best testament is when the kids come back and say ‘He really influenced my life,’ ” she said. “And they do come back.”

Naperville-based Public Research Group conducted a phone survey to gauge and record the interest in plans for

the new library and a referendum possibly raising property taxes.

Representative Tod Stanton presented the results of the survey, noting some interesting results.

“The area immediately surrounding this library, this site, is not quite as supportive as when you reach out to some of the other areas of this community,” Stanton said, suggesting it was because of the “not-inmy-backyard effect.”

The survey revealed that about 27 percent strongly supported the referendum, and 23 percent were strongly against the referendum on the platform of not raising taxes. About 50 percent were in the middle, with 27 to 30 percent of likely voters withholding support or opposition.

Stanton suggested the board focus its information campaign on the undecided voters, who also were concerned with how the new library’s design blends with downtown.

The survey results also revealed no change in interest in going lower than the suggested $40 million price tag or bond measure.

With the final round of public meetings completed this month, architectural firm Nagle Hartray received good feedback on the curved glass architecture, and was looking at buildings in downtown Plainfield as examples of what type of brick should be used, Representative Donald McKay said.

The most common concern was how the new library would affect parking.

However, Trustee Sharon Kinley said parking wasn’t just a library concern. The village would need to be a partner.

“I think this isn’t all our baby,” she said.

Milavec said she and two other employees will soon be ramping up the informational campaign, and that some more detail is needed before the strong push in January.

Trustees also need to officially vote on two ballot measures for the referendum by their Dec. 16 meeting.

Program gives students with disabilities a day at a workplace

Sabrina Shew thinks she’d like to work with children and got an opportunity Wednesday to find out if she really does.

“I am good at working with little kids,” said Shew, a student at Lockport Township High School who someday would like to have a job helping students with special needs.

She was at Bobbie Noonan’s Child Care in Lockport, one of 18 local employers participating in Disability Mentoring Day. The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living organizes the day once a year so students with disabilities can visit the kind of job sites where they might want to work someday.

Forty-seven students participated from the Lockport, Plainfield and Joliet school districts.

Shew spent part of Wednesday morning in the young nursery room, keeping toddlers focused on tasks and later leading one of the children by hand to see fire trucks brought by the Lockport Township Fire District for a special event that day at Bobbie Noonan’s.

She found she was able to help with the children.

“I can help them learn about taking things and not throwing them, and putting things in the right spot,” Shew said.

Bridging the gap

Mentoring Day gives the students a chance to explore their interests, but it also serves to foster understanding of their potential skills in the workplace, said Pam Heavens, executive director of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

“It’s designed to give students with disabilities a

chance to see what the real world is like, especially in the professions they would like to pursue,” Heavens said. “I also think it helps the mentors

get a better understanding of working with people with disabilities.”

About 72 percent of working-age people with disabili-

ties are unemployed, Heavens said. Mentoring Day is one way to try to bridge the gap between those people and potential employers.

Eighteen employers participated in Mentoring Day on Wednesday.

Schools look for employers willing to give disabled students a chance, said Kathy Thomason, a vocational education teacher at Plainfield South High School.

Thomason called the day

“a great experience” for the students.

“They get to see what it’s like to work,” she said.

Slain Plainfield North teacher remembered Woman was stabbed in home, husband killed after walking onto I-55

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Students at Plainfield North High School passed out copies of “Trip’s Tips” before the vigil began Wednesday night.

Sue Cunningham had written the points of advice when she was known as “Ms. Triplett” to her health and physical education students and remained “Trip” to her colleagues.

The list of tips includes such words of wisdom as: “Your attitude each day is your choice,” “Find Sue something you Cunningham like to do and work hard” and “Only you can change your life.”

“She was really interested in making sure her students would lead a healthy life,” her best friend, Elly Stonis, said.

“And one of the tips was ‘Don’t keep unhealthy relationships,’ which is, unfortunately, what she had.”

Sue Cunningham was slain in her home Tuesday night by her husband, Craig Cunningham, who then killed himself by walking into traffic on Interstate 55, police said.

Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said a neighbor asked police to do a welfare check at 8:07 p.m. after Sue Cunningham, 47, came home to the 25000 block of Prairie Grove Court and Craig Cun-

No one else was home at the time, but her son, Nick, 14, and daughter, Taylor, 8, lived there.

Officers found Sue Cunningham had suffered multiple stab wounds, Konopek said. She was taken to Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora, where she later was pronounced dead.

Craig Cunningham called a relative after leaving the house.

“He admitted to killing his wife and said he didn’t want to

go to jail and was going to kill himself,” Konopek said.

At 8:18 p.m., Craig Cunningham walked into northbound traffic near mile marker 263 just north of Route 126 and was struck by two vehicles, according to state police. Law enforcement recovered a knife from his car that is believed to be the murder weapon, Konopek said.

Craig Cunningham was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Sue Cunningham taught at Plainfield Central from 2002 to 2006 before transferring to Plainfield North, but she had been on medical leave this semester after being diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“She was more upset that she couldn’t work with the kids than she was about being sick,” her friend, Melanie Leung, said.

Sue Cunningham was given a clean bill of health two weeks ago after three chemotherapy sessions, Stonis said.

Sue Cunningham grew up in Naperville and worked for the Red Cross before becoming a teacher. Superintendent Lane Abrell hired her for the district when he was principal at Plainfield Central.

“Sue [was] a valued member of the staff, great with kids and a very positive person. All District 202 employees mourn Sue’s passing,” Abrell said in a statement from the district.

Sue Cunningham was member of Community Christian Church in Plainfield.

Several hundred students and friends attended a vigil for Sue Cunningham on Wednesday evening in front of Plainfield North High School. “[You’re here] because she touched your life in some way, shape or form, but you touched her life, too,” her brother, Dan Brown, said.

Stonis said her friend was a great teacher because she worked to make a connection with every student.

“She was able to bring herself down to a level the kids could understand. She’d remember their name and she’d remember special things about them,” she said.

Konopek said police had received no previous calls for service from the Cunningham residence. Sue and Craig Cunningham married in July 2014.

“Based on interviews we’ve conducted, we learned there were marital problems, but we don’t know what specifically triggered this confrontation,” Konopek said.

Wilmington teen killed in car crash; driver in intensive care

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – A 14-year-old girl was killed Tuesday when the car she was riding in struck a tree.

Cory A. Tebbens of Wilmington was riding with a 16-year-old boy when their

Jeep left the roadway and hit a tree near Stevens Lane and Widows Road, according to Police Chief Phillip Arnold.

“Stevens Lane is a gravel road that is not heavily traveled and passing drivers could not see the crash from Widows Road,” Arnold said.

A neighbor traveling

down Stevens Lane discovered the wreck at 5:20 p.m. and called 911.

Arnold said the boy was taking Tebbens to a Wilmington High School color guard practice that started at 5 p.m.

Wilmington firefighters extricated both teens from

the vehicle and took them to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. Both teens were wearing their seat belts and both airbags deployed, Arnold said.

“Initial observations indicate that the vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed, based on the

amount of damage,” Arnold said.

Tebbens was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 6:46 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. Arnold said Wednesday afternoon the 16-year-old driver was in intensive care, but stable.

6 Will County public defender to retire

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Circuit Court will begin looking for a new public defender.

Frank Astrella submitted a letter of retirement to Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt on Wednesday, Schoenstedt said. The public defender’s office, which represents anyone charged with a crime who cannot afford an attorney, is Frank overseen by the Astrella circuit court.

“His retirement will be effective Jan. 31, 2016, and the court appreciates having notice to get his successor in place,” Schoenstedt said.

The public defender must be a member of the bar in good standing. Applicants will be voted on by the 16 circuit judges. Schoenstedt expects the position will be posted statewide in November and interviews will be held in December.

Sources said Astrella submitted his retirement paperwork after the circuit judges met to talk about replacing him. Schoenstedt confirmed Wednesday the judges met recently, but would not comment on the topic discussed. Astrella is being sued by two assistant public defenders who claim he

The United States short-term rates have been near zero for over a half of a decade. “Recent weakness in the Chinese economy and some other international markets may have caused the Fed to delay the inevitable rate rise,” said Dr. Robert Atra, Chair of the Department of Finance at Lewis University. “The concern is that a global recession could perhaps wash up on the shores of the U.S., so keeping rates low may help fend off any weakness in the U.S. economy caused by a global slowdown,” he added.

There are some effects of raising the interest rates. Interest rates permeate the economy and increases by the Fed can raise the rates paid on loans such as home or car.

However, the effect on investments is a little more complex.

An increase in interest rates can depress stock prices as investors move their money from stocks into interest bearing investments, said Dr. Atra. At the same time, an increase in inter-

est rates can also be a signal that the economy is strengthening, which could increase stock prices.

Dr. Atra thinks now might be time for a rate increase. “Prolonged low interest rates can lead to bubbles in the prices of assets such as stocks and real estate. While there may not necessarily be bubbles right now in those markets, prices in both have been strong during this period of extremely low rates,” he said. World Trade Center piece to travel through Will, Grundy counties

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A piece of the World Trade Center will be traveling Friday on Interstate 80.

A steel beam belonging to one of the walls of the World Trade Center will make its way to Fort Collins, Colorado, with the help of Poudre Fire Authority firefighters, who are from the same city. The Fire Authority has been granted the privilege of owning the piece thanks to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund.

According to a traffic advisory, I-80 westbound will be shut down from about 9 to 11

a.m. Friday as the beam is being delivered. Drivers are encouraged to find other routes during that time.

The journey began Wednesday at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and will include several stops before firefighters reach their destination.

The firefighters who are bringing the World Trade Center piece were responders when the 9/11 attack occurred, and helped dig through the rubble of the fallen towers in the weeks that followed, said Patrick Love, Poudre Fire Authority spokesman.

Joliet school encourages providence CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL perfect attendance fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Dirksen Junior High School almost achieved 100-percent attendance Wednesday.

The school is one of several within Joliet Public Schools District 86 that pushes for full attendance through incentives programs in an effort to ensure students are coming to school. Dirksen staff and teachers offer students incentives to be in the buildings.

For Wednesday, those incentives were coming to school in pajamas and listening to music during breakfast and lunch periods. Out of about 657 Dirksen students, 96 percent were in attendance, Principal Rolland Jasper said.

“We are pleased with how we’ve improved our attendance. There is an unspoken competition [between District 86 schools] but truly we

try to improve ourselves as a school,” Jasper said.

Dirksen started the campaign for 100-percent attendance last October, he said.

School officials studied the culture and climate data of Dirksen to find ways to keep students connected and involved, especially since middle school is a time when students tend to disengage from school, he said.

“We challenge ourselves to improve our [attendance] numbers and decrease the number of truant students we have. … We challenge our parents, our teachers and our students to do so,” he said.

He said the school had days where 98 or 94 percent of students were in attendance.

Wednesday’s attendance was “kind of middle of the road,” he said.

“We do it because when we look at attendance over a month, we identify days

where statistically it’s not good attendance,” Jasper said. “We strategically pick days in the month where we try to give attendance a shot or a boost.”

Sandy Zalewski, District 86 spokeswoman, said Dirksen has always been one of the top schools in the 100 Percent Perfect Attendance Days campaign.

“One of the action items in our [district] strategic plan is making sure kids are in school and learning,” she said.

Jasper said other incentives school officials offer to students to come to school is awarding individual classrooms that have 100-percent attendance or allowing students to use the gym freely for games and activities.

If 100-percent attendance is achieved, students can have a choice of open gym, music in the cafeteria or a movie showing.

Lowder said rates for veteran unemployment are higher than they should be. He discussed how his newly created nonprofit helps entrepreneurial veterans start their own businesses.

Lowder said he and Bertino-Tarrant are working together to craft legislation establishing a pilot program in Illinois for entrepreneurial veterans under the notion that “all veterans deserve a chance.” Under the proposed program, veterans would

craft a business plan, receive help from mentors and counseling, and win grant money to start the business.

Vietnam War veteran John W. Davin said Wednesday he enjoyed the breakfast and liked Lowder’s idea to offer veterans entrepreneurial opportunities. He said he hopes the men and women who are active overseas today find better treatment upon returning home than he did.

To these students, brainstorming before creating a project means that no idea is too crazy, there is no criticism, only encouragement, and the teachers ask for quantity of quality ideas.

That’s right. When teacher Dale West was explaining the design process the students were to use before their “Paper Bridge” activity Instant Challenge, that phrase was one of the main he stressed.

“Work for quantity over quality, brainstorm everything, get everything out of your mind and on paper at this point,” West said.

This new class uses Project Lead the Way Curriculum by a grant from Cargill and through the ExxonMobil “Be An Engineer” program, engineers mentor and are active in classroom activities Student pairs were give two cubes, paper and scissors. The

goal was to create the longest bridge without it touching the table at any point, which proved to be frustrating at times.

With only one piece of 8.5 x 11 inch paper given, sophomore Dan Flores and senior Brayden Thompson were extremely frustrated on how they cut their paper.

It’s so frustrating because the middle won’t stop sagging, Thompson said.

With only 15 minutes to build, the clock was ticking and two groups were back and forth with their lengths, constantly trying to make their bridge longer when the other would inch ahead.

At the final buzzer, sophomore Fernando Garcia and freshman Justin Zuniga had the longest bridge at 46 inches.

Both came up with the design to cut the paper in long strips and fold into a tent, place on top of one another and pull out to support, resting on the blocks.

Their rivals, freshman Victoria Bryant and Luis Reyes edged out the other pair, but after time was up, creating a bridge that was 50 inches long.

PLAINFIELD – The need for improved funding, along with health care and other services for veterans returning home from overseas combat, was spotlighted Wednesday morning during a Veterans Breakfast event in Plainfield.

About 120 veterans attended the inaugural breakfast, held at the Plainfield American Legion, 24741 Renwick Road. Food was provided by Meijer while the event was hosted by state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield, and Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet.

Joseph C. Bebej Jr., age 69, passed away October 16, 2015 at Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care in Naperville, Illinois.

Joseph was born March 1, 1946 in Joliet, son of Joseph and Eleanor Daniels Bebej. He attended Joliet schools.

Before his retirement, Joseph was employed at Chuck Dzak Motors in Braidwood.

He enjoyed the game of Golf, fishing, and was a lifelong Cubs fan.

Surviving is his wife, Jeanne; his sons, Bryan (Holly) Bebej of New Lenox, Michael Bebej of North Carolina; a daughter, Kelly (Dave) Anderson of Connecticut. Also surviving are his brothers, Tom (Bernie) Bebej of New Lenox, Larry (Sue) Bebej of Lockport; a sister, Judy (Gary) Harold of Manhattan; and 5 grandchildren.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Peggy Stanislaus; and grandson, Trevor Bebej.

Jeanette P. Blalock, “Blondie”, age 95, late of Crest Hill, passed away peacefully, Tuesday October 20, 2015 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Born in West Creek, New Jersey, living in Illinois since the 1950s.

Jeanette faithfully attended First Baptist Church, Lockport. She enjoyed her yearly motorcycle rides after Sunday Service, where she had her final ride at the age of 93.

She was forever grateful for those memories made at the First Baptist Church.

An avid Chicago White Sox fan, A.J. Pierzynski’s biggest supporter and Blackhawk’s fan.

SUE A. COOPER Sue A. Cooper (Nee Murray), age 69, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at Silver Cross Hospital, New Lenox.

Survived by her daughter, Valerie Vorreyer of Manhattan; and her son, Wade (Eva) Cooper of Lansing; her grandchildren, Robert, Edwin, and Lorenzo; her former husband, Edwin Cooper of Manhattan; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, Gerard and Merna Murray; and her nephew, Robert Marsh.

Sue was born in Joliet and was a lifelong resident of Manhattan.

She was a graduate of Lincoln-Way Central High School, class of 1964 and College of St. Francis, class of 1968. Sue went on to get her master’s degree in education from Illinois State University and taught for 41 years, most of her career at Anna McDonald Grade School in Manhattan.

She enjoyed playing the piano for many weddings, funerals, and school functions. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was an active member in the Manhattan Community.

Sue loved teaching, she touched many lives throughout her life, her children shared her with countless other children and after retiring in 2009, her favorite place to be was with them and her grandchildren.

Funeral service for Sue will be 9:00 A.M., Saturday, October 24, 2015 from Forsythe Gould Funeral Home in procession to St. Joseph Catholic Church for 9:30 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Lisa Eve Gallegos, age 54, passed away suddenly in her home, on Monday, October 19, 2015. Lisa was born on November 1, 1960 in Joliet to William and Aurora (nee Lopez) Gallegos.

Lisa attended Joliet East High School and was a lifelong resident of Joliet. She worked as a waitress and loved striking up conversations with customers. Lisa volunteered at various food banks as well as St. Bernard Catholic Church.

She was a consummate mother and homemaker. A marvelous cook that loved to feed everyone. Lisa enjoyed spending time with her sister, family and friends laughing and dancing the night away. She was an incredible woman who adored her children and grandchildren and was a compassionate vibrant, unfailing warrior. Lisa Eve Gallegos will be forever remembered with love and laughter.

Later in life, she became a co-owner of Gallo and Ward Imports. After a trip to Medjugorie, she organized a Rosary of Reparation Service which is held once a year at several parishes in Joliet.

Preceded in death by her husband, Victor (2007); sister, Dolores Hoerrmann (2015); her parents, Nicholas and Zelmira (nee Michelotti) Novielli; and son-in-law, Robert Cox (2014).

Born: June 27, 1934; in Joliet, IL Died: Oct. 17, 2015; in Joliet, IL In the waking light of this past Saturday morning, our devoted mother and grandmother departed this life in the peaceful calm of her surroundings at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. After a year-long battle with lung cancer and several other ailments, this remarkably resilient woman’s journey had concluded; or perhaps had just begun.

We trust in our faith that her beautiful soul has been reunited with those of her family and friends, including her husband of 60 years, James “Jim” Neilis (2013); daughter, Terri Rys (2012); son, James “Chip” Neilis, Jr. (2004); as well as her mother, Mary Gusich Kane; father, Lester Schwab; sister, Jackie French; and brother-in-law, William “Bill” Neilis.

She will be deeply missed by her surviving family, two daughters, Debbie (Cliff) Spencer and Nancy Neilis; four grandchildren, Brooke (Josh) Spencer , J.R. Neilis, Jennifer Neilis and Nicole Semplinski; four great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Marilyn was born in Joliet and a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of St. Francis Academy, Class of 1952.

She and Jim were married in 1954 and as they started their family, she became immersed in supporting her husband’s and children’s endeavors.

As her children became adults, she began working for Joliet Township High Schools, initially at the East campus and then the Central campus and ultimately the West campus until she retired after nearly 35 years of

Shirley was born in Joliet to Anton and Justine (nee Wedic) Kauzlaric, attended St. Joseph School, and graduated from St. Francis Academy High School, Class of 1956.

She was a realtor for Spring Realty for over 30 years where many of her clients became her dear friends. Shirley enjoyed retiring in Bonita Springs, FL where she enjoyed ballroom dancing with friends, walking the beach and golfing. She was always full of life and had a beautiful smile.

Shirley is survived by her only daughter, Lisa (Phil) Dorencz; two beautiful granddaughters, Emily and Hailey Dorencz; a sister-in-law, Marge Kauzlaric; nephew, Robert (Judy) Kauzlaric, Jr.; nieces, Sharon (Dan) Hodgeman and Sandy (Bob) Steller; and lifelong friend, Charlene (Ted) Ebeling.

Biden won’t run, a boost for Clinton

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – After months of tortured indecision, Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday he won’t be a candidate in the 2016 White House campaign, solidifying Hillary Rodham Clinton’s status as the Democratic front-runner and the party’s likely heir to President Barack Obama’s legacy.

Standing under bright sun in the White House Rose Garden, Biden spoke movingly about mourning the recent death of his son, Beau, a process he said does not match the political calendar. While he said his family was emotionally prepared to undertake a grueling presidential campaign, they arrived at that decision too late for him to mount a credible bid for a job

that has long been the north star of his political ambitions.

Biden’s decision puts to rest the uncertainty hanging over the Democratic primary.

The race now will likely settle into a two-person contest between Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has energized the party’s liberal base but lacks Clinton’s campaign infrastructure and support from party leaders.

Real spiritual leadership can be found in Florida CLEARWATER, Fla. – For the past few days, I have been in quasi-hiding here, working on a certification in spiritual direction. (Yes, it’s not quite a hardship.) I’m at a school called the Cenacle of Divine Providence, and just about everything here can be summed up by the title of a book written by a few Dominican priests of my acquaintance: “Love that Never Ends.” (It can be found in the library here, as it happens.)

Ron and Adrienne Novotny are the lifeblood of this school.

Working alongside a religious community called the Marian Servants of Divine Providence, the Novotnys’ marriage fueled much of the energy of the school. And it still does.

Ron Novotny died just this past spring. But the love of his family and school remains alive.

mously here, through his legacy and through video and tapes of his lectures, has been a gift. He was a spiritual director to many priests, alongside his wife. This sort of loving commitment is important because it’s exactly what’s going to rebuild the church today.

As the priest who delivered the homily at Ron’s funeral Mass put it: “His love for priests was profound, and he could speak of the goodness of priests in ways that I have never been able to see in others. ... [His work] showed very deeply his love and care for the church, and his care and love for the church’s priests.”

Ron is a reminder to a society that has forgotten just how crucial fatherhood, both literal and metaphorical, is.

And every man is called to this in his own way.

said something similar many times, to many varieties of fathers.

All these things came to mind, too, as Hillary Clinton talked about one of the chief reasons she claims she should be chosen as the Democratic nominee for president – her gender. I would have patience with that line of campaign rhetoric if she showed a different kind of leadership – the kind that would keep women from feeling as if they have to deny their motherhood and end the lives of their unborn babies, pitting individualism over stewardship of creation.

I’m in Florida instead of attending the synod on the families in Rome, where leaks and speculation seem the name of the game in media coverage. Bishops and experts are meeting, as many of us did in Philadelphia late last month, to discuss how best to

help nurture families. That’s a tall order at a time when what a human person is – what it means to be man or woman at all – seems up for debate.

Here, I’ve had an opportunity to get a little glimpse into a family fully alive, some of that look coming through the eyes of a man who, despite his recent death, continues to teach, inspire and even live.

What we need is the kind of leadership the Novotnys embody so extraordinarily – even after Ron’s passing – and which Bishop Olmsted encourages. Leadership that families and bishops, and everyone else who values virtue in civil society, can get behind.

The Tigers (18-2) collected the only goal that they would need in the eighth minute when Alex Lynch served up a pass to Austin Collier, who put in a close try for the first of two scoring combinations between the pair.

“We had a lot of stuff going today at school, but we put all of that aside and we finished strong, so I’m proud of our whole team,” Collier said. “It was very, very hard, and I think it just took a lot of mental strength and a lot of heart.

We know that we have the players to do well this year, so we couldn’t let one bad thing at school get to us.

“One reason why we played so good was because they beat us once, so we knew they could do it again. I don’t like losing, but that earlier loss to them is what won it for us today. If we would have won before, we would have been

thinking that this was another game. But they beat us and made a statement, and we had to make an even bigger statement.”

The Bengals (9-10-4) were seeded 15th in the sectional but had won seven of their past nine matches. They threatened before the first half’s midpoint on a shot from Brice Tchamou, then late in the half on an attempt by Marlon Azuero, while North countered between those efforts with a try by Nick Anweiler.

After East’s Jacob Stevens and Lynch exchanged good threats early in the final half, North connected again in the 53rd minute when Lynch sent in a long free kick and Collier again got free in front and was able to put in a close-range shot.

“It was hard with one of our teachers passing away,” Lynch said. “But we all knew that she would be in our memory at this game, so we all just had to keep focused, and we did our job today. Everyone played their part, and we had a great game and we won, 2-0.

“Everyone was real pumped for this game. We knew from the start until the end that it was going to be a tough game and that we had

to be at our best, and we were.

We’re taking it one game at a time now. We’ll see whoever wins on Saturday, and we’ll be ready for them.”

Both sides had more good chances down the stretch, but neither could score. East’s Alan Romero fired in a few dangerous attempts and Michael Flores added a liner, while North’s Lynch, Austin Hansen and Mitch Rathbun continued to apply pressure.

“There’s a reason why they were the two-seed and haven’t lost a lot of games,” East coach Cosimo Patano said. “They have a lot of quality players, and you have to give them respect. They got one in the first eight minutes and kind of put our backs to the wall.

They were able to manage the game from that standpoint after capitalizing on a restart.

“At the end of the day, they put the ball in the back of the net, and we weren’t able to execute on our chances. They only had a couple of good chances, but they punished us for it, and that’s what you need. We had some great results toward the end and finally started to get it going. I’m proud of these boys and with the direction that this program is going.”

We also know Joliet West (4-4), Bolingbrook (4-4), Lincoln-Way Central (4-4) and Coal City (4-4) should qualify if they can win Friday. Joliet West will have a tough test at Lockport, Bolingbrook is facing the closest thing to an impossible task at Homewood-Flossmoor, Lincoln-Way Central must win at mighty Thornton, and Coal City should handle Seneca.

Minooka (4-4), meanwhile, is likely to be on the outside looking in even if the Indians can beat Plainfield North

AREA FOOTBALL RANKINGS LARGE SCHOOLS

1. Joliet Catholic (7-1): The loss at Benet was not a huge surprise considering how injured the Hilltoppers have been. They likely must beat another strong East Suburban Catholic Conference foe in Marist to do no worse than share the conference title.

2. Lincoln-Way East (6-2): The Griffins hope to finish strong with a win over Sandburg, then enter the playoffs as one of those two-loss teams you don’t want to see coming.

3. Lincoln-Way West (7-1): The Warriors will be shooting for a share of the SouthWest Suburban Red title Friday when they visit unbeaten Lincoln-Way North. Regardless of that outcome, West will be a playoff threat. But will it be in Class 5A or 6A? 4. Lemont (7-1): Last week’s 35-0 victory over previously unbeaten Oak Forest serves as fair warning. The defending Class 6A state runner-up Indians are ready for another strong playoff run.

5. Plainfield North (6-2): If there was any doubting the Tigers previously, there no longer is after they ended Oswego’s 33-game Southwest Prairie win streak, 37-25. North visits Minooka on Friday seeking a share of the conference title.

6. Plainfield South (5-3): The Cougars visit Oswego on Friday with an opportunity to claim at least a share of the Southwest Prairie championship. They have a 6-3 win over Plainfield North on the résumé, and North knocked off Oswego last week. The three are tied for the top spot.

7. Bolingbrook (4-4): The Raiders committed seven turnovers in last week’s 33-16 loss to Lockport. All that means is they must win at No. 1 Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday in order to See RANKINGS, page 24

on Friday for their fifth victory. The maximum number of playoff points they can muster is 35, and that’s not likely to be enough. The cutoff probably will be at or near 38.

All that means is we can have anywhere from seven to 12 playoff teams, with eight or nine most likely. If it is eight or nine, that will be an unusually low number for our area.

As for which class our teams will be in, Wilmington will be in Class 3A, JCA in 5A, Lincoln-Way West probably in 6A with 5A still possible, Lemont in 6A, Lincoln-Way East in 7A, Plainfield North in 7A and Plainfield South in 8A. Among those facing a must-win, Bolingbrook, Joliet West and Minooka would be in 8A, Lincoln-Way Central in 7A and Coal City in 4A. We noted that Lincoln-Way West will be in either 6A or 5A because

When we say a football team is facing a “must-win,” there is an assumption that team has more incentive than it otherwise would have.

Along with the incentive comes the feeling that team indeed will go out and play its best in order to accomplish the objective.

Sometimes it works out that way, sometimes it doesn’t.

Around the Joliet area Friday night, a handful of our teams will play for their playoff lives, and others will vie for at least a share of a conference championship. That should provide plenty of incentive.

The next step is to execute – get the job done.

This is Week 9, the final week of the regular season. We know Wilmington (8-0), Lincoln-Way West (7-1), Lemont (7-1), Joliet Catholic (7-1), Lincoln-Way East (6-2) and Plainfield North (6-2) will be in the playoffs. And there is

The Associated Press TORONTO – Marco Estrada came up with a superb start in the most important outing of his career, stopping the Royals’ hit parade and helping the Toronto Blue Jays send the AL Championship Series back to Kansas City.

Estrada pitched one-hit ball into the eighth inning, giving Toronto’s tattered bullpen a rest, and the Blue Jays beat the Royals, 7-1, Wednesday to close to 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.

Troy Tulowitzki broke open the game with a three-run double off Kelvin Herrera in the sixth, giving him seven RBIs in the series. Edwin Encarnacion had walked with the bases loaded against Edinson Volquez, who seemed flustered by close calls against the Royals.

Estrada faced the minimum 20 batters before Lorenzo Cain walked with two outs in the seventh. Closer Roberto Osuna was perfect in the ninth.

Yordano Ventura will start for the defending AL champions Friday in Game 6 against David Price, the Game 2 loser.

Estrada, a 32-year-old right-hander, enabled his bullpen to rest, a day after Kansas City romped, 14-2, in a game that saw infielder Cliff Pennington pitch in the ninth.

We’ll stick with our gut feeling and project that 6A will be it.

Lincoln-Way Central, likewise, is a small 7A team. But the Knights have a bigger concern – the game at Thornton – than to worry about whether they may slip down to 6A. There are 75 teams statewide entering Week 9 with 4-4 records, and some 5-3 teams will wind up 5-4. The relative size of the 5-4 qualifiers will move the class scale up or down, if only a small amount.

Getting away from the playoffs and switching to

conference races for a moment, several area schools are looking at must-wins.

For example, if JCA beats Marist and Notre Dame beats Carmel, the two will winners will be co-champs in the East Suburban Catholic with 6-1 records. If JCA and Notre Dame both happen to lose, the ESCC probably would finish in a six-way tie at 5-2, with Marist, Nazareth, Benet and Marian Central also involved. Would that be a record?

In the Southwest Prairie, Plainfield North will guarantee itself a share of the title with a win at Minooka because the other co-leaders, Plainfield South and Oswego, will clash Friday.

The SouthWest Suburban Red race is Lincoln-Way North’s to win. However, if Lincoln-Way West can

top North, those two would share the crown. In that case, Thornton also would be a co-champion if the Wildcats beat Lincoln-Way Central.

The Sandburg at Lincoln-Way East winner will share the SouthWest Suburban Blue title with Homewood-Flossmoor only if Bolingbrook can upset H-F. After blanking previously unbeaten Oak Forest last week, Lemont will win the South Suburban Blue title outright with a victory over TF North.

Again, it will be interesting to see how our area teams respond Friday to their mustwin games. Playoff berths and conference championships hang in the balance.

CHICAGO – One final, charmed swing by Daniel Murphy, and the New York Mets finished a playoff sweep of the Cubs.

A new generation of Amazins is heading to the World Series.

Murphy homered for a record sixth consecutive postseason game and the Mets brushed aside the Cubs, 8-3, Wednesday night, capping a National League Championship Series in which New York never trailed.

Lucas Duda hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the second, silencing a sellout crowd of 42,227 at Wrigley Field desperately hoping for the beginning of an epic comeback in Game 4.

Not this time. Not with New York’s array of power arms, and Murphy swinging a hot bat that made him the MVP of the series.

Manager Terry Collins’ team advanced to the World Series for the first time since they lost to the crosstown Yankees in five games in 2000.

They will face Toronto or Kansas City in Game 1 on Tuesday night – the Royals lead 3-2 in the ALCS. The Cubs, meanwhile, still haven’t won the crown since 1908. Manager Joe Maddon’s wild-card bunch surged into this series, but was overmatched.

When Dexter Fowler looked at a called third strike for the final out, Jeurys Familia dropped to his knees in front of the mound and then hopped up for a hug from catcher Travis d’Arnaud. They soon were joined by the rest of their jubilant teammates in the infield grass at Wrigley Field.

A small, but vocal group of New York fans behind the visiting dugout then chanted “Let’s go, Mets! Let’s go, Mets!”

Right when it looked as if his historic streak was coming to an end, Murphy connected for a two-run drive to center against Fernando Rodney in the eighth inning. The second baseman raised his right arm as he rounded first after his seventh homer of the playoffs.

Maybe Fox’s late-game decisions were right The main topic du jour for the past several days since the Bears’ overtime loss to the Lions on Sunday is whether coach John Fox’s play-calling and clock management in crunch time were overly conservative and incompetent enough, respectively, to cost the Bears the game.

A significant majority of Bears fans seem to feel the answer to both those questions is yes, and now they’re getting testy with me and broadcasting my incompetence simply because I’m not prepared to agree with them.

Issue No. 1 among Bears fans is why – with a four-point lead, 2:42 to play and a first down at their own 19 – Fox/ Adam Gase elected to run three consecutive running plays, knowing the Lions had all three of their timeouts, which they used, resulting in the Bears running only 19 seconds off the clock and giving Detroit the ball at its own 34 and 2:23 left.

The second controversy stems from Detroit quickly moving to the Bears’ 2-yard line on a 34-yard pass to Theo Riddick after which Fox let 10 to 12 more seconds run off the clock to the two-minute warning, and then a 26-yard pass to Lance Moore, after which Fox let another 30 seconds or so run off the clock with three timeouts still in his pocket.

The Bears are averaging 3.9 yards a carry on the season. It is reasonable to suggest those three runs could/should have resulted in a first down, leaving Detroit with no timeouts and the game all but over.

Some will argue: “But Detroit knew the Bears were going to run, thus making it harder to succeed.”

Really? If you thought the Bears should have thrown the ball, how could the Lions be sure they wouldn’t?

A team has two goals in that situation: Convert first downs and force the other team to exhaust its timeouts. The Bears got half the job done.

Honestly, I was screaming for a nice, safe, easy-to-complete play-action pass on second down at the time. But the problem there wasn’t that Fox/ Gase ran the ball three times; instead, it was their defense allowed Detroit two chunk plays for 60 yards that took less

As for Fox not using his timeouts once the Lions were knocking on the door, how limited would the Bears have been on the ensuing drive to tie the game and get to overtime with no timeouts?

As it turned out, Fox never used those timeouts, but he couldn’t have known the Lions were going to hand him two pass interference calls to stop the clock and set up the tying field goal.

lichick did in Super Bowl XLIX after Seattle got to his 5-yard line with just over a minute left. Belichick won a ring.

You can argue the Pats got lucky, but I beg to differ. Russell Wilson made a mistake, and Malcolm Butler made a fantastic play.

Had Belichick stopped the clock, with time to huddle on the sideline, would Pete Carroll have stuck with his decision not to give the ball to Marshawn Lynch?

The bottom line is if Belichick and Fox use their timeouts in those situations, they are clearly telling their defenses they expect them to fail and are planning accordingly because they can’t trust them to do their jobs.

But when you realize Fox got his club to OT and gave it two more chances to win the

game before a blown coverage on Calvin Johnson cost them the game, doesn’t that argue he actually got it right?

Founder of tattoo ministry to present Teen Cyber Safety Class in Minooka

dunland@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Chris Baker, a Christian tattoo artist and founder of the Oswego-based INK 180 Ministry, said many people think sex trafficking is prostitution, strictly an inner-city problem or resembles the 2008 movie, “Taken,” which dealt with kidnapping and sex slavery.

Wrong on all counts, Baker said.

In sex trafficking, victims are forced into performing sex acts for money. This crime – which is increasing, Baker said – happens everywhere, even in Joliet, he said. That’s why Baker and his 17-yearold daughter, McKenzie, offer a free monthly Teen Cyber Safety Class at the ministry’s shop.

The father-daughter team also will present that one-hour class Sunday at Minooka Bible Church. They will discuss the trafficking problem and how cyber relationships can link to trafficking.

Parents are encouraged to attend with their teens. Kids as young as 13 are victims, but Baker knew one instance where the victim was age 6.

“The father was a pimp, and the mother was a prostitute,” Baker said.

The Teen Cyber Safety Class is just one aspect of Baker’s INK 180 Ministry.

Since its inception four years ago, Baker’s ministry has performed more than 2,600 free tattoo removals. Clients include survivors of sex trafficking and domestic violence along with individuals previously associated with gangs.

Baker also does cover-ups for self-harm victims and removals for young people entering the military. About 80 percent of the tattoo work Baker does is ministry-related, he said. Of the remaining 20 percent, 75 percent of the tattoos Baker inks are Christian-themed.

Rich in everything but faith

“I was a very selfish and greedy person,” Baker said.

“At the time, I just wanted to get something bigger and better instead of using the gift God gave me to give someone else a second chance.”

Until six years ago, Baker could afford to be greedy. Baker said he earned $100,000 a year working for a Fortune 50 company – until the company laid him off, and Baker lost his house and cars.

Baker said he was depressed and self-destructive.

He said his wife, Lisa Baker, insisted he seek help. They saw a counselor in Naperville who prayed for them.

The next day, Baker went to church and began talking to God about his calling.

“The answer I got was, ‘What do you love to do more than anything else, and will you do it for free?’ ” Baker

said. “Well, I love tattooing, but no way is that doing God’s work.”

Baker said other Christians often criticized his

tattoos – Baker, who has loved art since childhood, is covered in them – and cited their interpretations of Bible passages to support their criticism.

But Baker trusted God. So he rented space in a shop and began removing tattoos, many more than the three to four a month he anticipated. As the ministry grew, Baker also grew the business side to support it. In addition to the tattoos, Baker also does speaking engagements and rents part of his space to another tattoo artist.

Removing gang-related tattoos has special meaning

for Baker. Although Baker said he never belonged to a gang, he had friends in gangs back when he was growing up in California. Some of those friends, he said, died or went to prison.

“I don’t care if people hate tattoos. It doesn’t break my heart, and I’m not here to convert people into tattoo-lovers,” Baker said. “But I am here to give people a second chance in life and to get rid of the marks that are holding them back in life – or change them into something positive.”

For Baker, whose tattoos mostly reflect his Irish heritage and love for Jesus, tattoos are outward manifestations of the inner person, and he’s proud to wear them. Still, Baker does regret one tattoo – his initials, inked on his 18th birthday.

“It was dumb,” Baker said.

“I wish people would think before they get a tattoo and not get something they will regret later in life or not like.”

The Joliet Franciscan Sisters announced there will be two Mother Alfred Moes Award honorees and two Joliet Franciscan Heritage Award honorees this year.

The Mother Alfred Moes

Award, named after the foundress of the congregation, is given to an individual or an organization Diane seeking to turn Nilan vision into service. The honorees for 2015 are The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic and Diane Nilan, founder/president of Hear Us, an organization that provides voice and visibility to the country’s homeless chil-

dren and youth.

The Joliet Franciscan Heritage Award is given to individuals or institutions Claire recognizing the Millweard needs of their community and using their gifts to respond to these needs. The 2015 Honorees are Frances “Fran” Naal and Claire Millweard.

Naal is she a graduate of the College of St. Francis (now

the University of St. Francis) and the niece of the late Sister Loretta Tures.

Naal has been a Feast comFrances mittee member Naal almost from the beginning of the event and is a founding member of the Sisters’ 520 Club.

She is an active member of the Visitation & Aid Society, the Joliet Area Community Hospice Guild and the Univer-

sity of St. Francis Alumni Association.

Millweard attended school at St. John the Baptist Grade School and St. Francis Academy.

She also has been a Feast committee member almost from the beginning and also is a founding member of the 520 Club.

She is a member of the Joliet Area Community Hospice Guild, the Visitation & Aid Society and others.

Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church celebrating 50 years The Herald–News LOCKPORT – In spring 1965, Zion Lutheran Church, organized in 1875, merged with Trinity Lutheran Church, organized in 1932, in Lockport.

Both congregations agreed to select a new name, call a new pastor and construct a new church. In autumn 1965, Shepherd of the Hill was chosen as the

favored name. The Rev. Paul Johns was called as first pastor, and construction of the new church building started in spring 1968 at 925 E. 9th St. in Lockport.

An open house and celebration of its initial worship service was held in February 1970.

A commencement and yearlong celebration of its 50 years will begin with a special service at 10 a.m. Nov.

8 at Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church, followed by a lunch at Prairie Bluff Golf Course. Attendees will include past pastors who served the church as well as past and present members.

Yesterday, we looked at the bridge uppercut, but there are two important aspects that must be kept in mind by the defenders – both relevant in this deal.

South is in four hearts. How should the defenders card to defeat the contract? Be precise.

As in yesterday’s column, fourth hand made a natural overcall in opener’s minor. North was right to bid two hearts with four-card support, despite his minimum.

West starts with the diamond ace: eight, 10, seven. West cashes the diamond queen: nine, three, six. What now?

This deal was played in a three-table social duplicate. The first West continued with his diamond king. East, thinking that this would win the trick, discarded a low spade. South ruffed, drew trumps, conceded a spade trick, and claimed.

At the second table, West carefully led a low diamond at trick three, which his partner ruffed with the heart jack.

Momentarily, this looked like a lethal uppercut, gaining a trump trick for the defenders. However, South calmly discarded his spade loser and made his contract.

The third West knew that when you try for an uppercut, you should cash all of your side-suit tricks first. Before the third diamond, West took his spade ace. Then he also carefully led a low diamond to force his partner to ruff, and the contract went down one.

South lost two diamonds, one spade and one heart.

hair; other insecticides can be toxic if applied to the skin.

Most pediculicides contain chemicals called pyrethroids as the active ingredient. These usually are applied as a shampoo, then washed off about 10 minutes later. A second treatment is often necessary about 10 days later. When you wash off the pediculicides from your daughter’s hair, do it over the sink, not in a shower or tub.

That’s because you want to minimize splashing the pediculicide on skin outside the head. It’s easier to control where the rinse water goes in the sink.

Head lice are acquired by direct contact with an infested person’s hair.

It’s unusual for head lice to be transferred by shared combs, brushes, hats or other hair accessories.

Head lice are also not usually found on clothes, towels and bed linens.

Still, you may want to change any items that were recently in direct contact with your daughter’s hair and wash them in hot water.

Head lice do not transmit infections. In other words, they are not like the ticks or mosquitos which carry bacteria or viruses that can infect humans.

Finally, despite what many people believe, head lice are neither caused by, nor are a sign of, poor hygiene or housekeeping. They’re just something a person (usually a child) can pick up – and something you can cure.

Dear Reader: Lice – the visitor dreaded by parents everywhere.

Head lice are small insects that infest hair on people’s heads. A single insect is called a “louse.”

The female lays up to 100 eggs, or nits, at a time.

She secretes a kind of glue that attaches the nits onto strands of hair near the scalp. Once the eggs hatch, their six legs allow them to grasp and wander between hairs.

In their remaining days or weeks of life, they feed on human blood. They’re sort of like vampires, only much smaller. (I’ve put an illustration of a louse on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

You’ll know to check your daughter for lice if she is scratching her head often. If you think your daughter has them, you may want to check in with her pediatrician.

Lice and their eggs are often hard to see or distinguish from dandruff or other material caught in the hair.

With proper treatment, head lice usually go away within about two weeks. One option is to use a special louse comb or nit comb to remove lice and their eggs from your daughter’s hair.

This sometimes requires combing several times a week until no lice are seen for two or more weeks. It is possible through careful combing to remove all of the lice, without using medicines to kill them.

Your pediatrician may prescribe a medicine called a pediculicide.

They are special insecticide products that are available over the counter and by prescription in drugstores.

Dear Abby: My daughter has been in a lesbian relationship for 14 years.

They recently took me to lunch and informed me her partner, “Nicole,” is in the process of transitioning to a male.

Nicole has now legally changed her name to “Nick” and has begun hormone treatments. They have been going to counseling for the past six months. Since Nick began the transition, I have seen him three times. Last week when I was visiting, I accidentally called Nick by the wrong pronoun, “she” instead of “he,” a couple of times. I was either immediately corrected or ignored until I realized I had used the wrong word. It hurt my feelings.

After I got home, I sent Nick a text to apologize and explain it would take time for me to get used to saying “Nick” and referring to him as a he. I told them their correcting me bothered me.

All weekend I could tell they were irritated with me, and I felt it was uncalled for.
