The circus may be coming to town

Dresden at full power

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A European-style circus may come to Joliet toward the end of October.

City officials in Joliet will consider approving a request from the Louis Joliet Mall and Cirque Italia to bring a circus to the mall Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.

On Monday, Chante DeMoustes, Cirque Italia chief operating officer and producer, described the circus to city officials as an “Italian water circus” that would feature performances over 35,000 gallons of water.

No animals would be involved and the circus would be “very family-oriented” with affordable tickets, she said.

“It’s geared toward the community income and it’s a

great family event,” DeMoustes said.

Cirque Italia previously held shows at the Westfield Fox Valley Mall. Joliet city officials did not hear of any incidences occurring, according to city records.

Restaurant developments City officials are also considering approval of development agreements for Juliet’s Restaurant and Lockdown Bar and Grill in downtown Joliet.

Developers of Juliet’s Restaurant want to renovate the location. According to city records, the developers signed a lease agreement with the current owners to renovate the first and second floors as a new restaurant and bar.

The developers would be entitled to a rebate of the food and beverage tax, which is 1

percent, for every $25,000 in property improvements for a three month period.

Developers of Lockdown Bar and Grill want to acquire and renovate the Loughran building in downtown Joliet.

The first floor would house the bar and grill for the restaurant, which has another location in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood.

City Manager Jim Hock said city officials have not been given a date yet on the opening of Lockdown Bar and Grill but the agreement would speed development.

“One of the things this agreement does is it starts the clock running and they got to make their investments on a certain timeline,” Hock said.

“And if they don’t, we got the right to take it back and pass it to somebody who’s more serious.”

New Lenox response team places second in CERT skills competition

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Participating in the fifth annual Prairie State CERT Challenge was an adrenaline rush for Mike English.

English volunteers for the New Lenox Community Emergency Response Team, whose members traveled Saturday to the College of DuPage Homeland Security Education Center in Glen Ellyn to test their emergency response skills.

There they competed with community emergency response teams from 11 other communities and finished second. But the competition was less about winning and more about learning.

“We actually learn we need to learn a little bit more. We’re never going to be perfect,” English said. “The events are as real as they’re going to get.”

In one simulated event, a car careened into a crowd during a parade and teams had to quickly prioritize who to treat, said Daniel Martin, New Lenox public safety division chief and

CERT program coordinator.

He said the event is a healthy competition that allows volunteers to network with others and challenge themselves.

“They put a tremendous amount of time into training just to go up and participate,” Martin said. “What the neat thing is, it’s not designed to be a competition. It’s an opportunity for the teams to go there and challenge themselves.”

Martin said the team had trained since August.

Community emergency response teams came from Carol Stream, Milton Township, Naperville, Chicago, South Lake County, Northbrook, Addison, Buffalo Grove, Highland Park and Glen Ellyn.

Carol Stream finished first.

At the college’s Homeland Security Education Center, 210 volunteers from community emergency response teams rotated through eight stations – about 30 minutes each – testing their skills in team building, medical treatment, transportation of injured people, searches, fires, disaster psychology and documentation.

English, who served as the New Lenox team leader, said the event mimics real life situations. Like others on his team, English is a volunteer who joined to help his community.

“You learn a lot for coming out for CERT. You learn preparedness not only for the community, but for your family,” he said.

Martin said the event helps make the teams more responsive when a disaster strikes back home. In the past, the New Lenox team helped people stranded out in the streets during the blizzards of 2011.

“We’ve been very fortunate that we hadn’t had a Washington, Diamond or Coal City tornado-type of event, but we train nonetheless because it’s not a question of if it’s going to happen, but when,” Martin said.

Each of the response teams is part of the state’s Citizen Corps program, which is administered by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency – sponsor of the Prairie State CERT Challenge – through the Illinois Terrorism Task Force, according to New Lenox CERT.

MORRIS – Operators at Dresden Generating Station have returned Unit 2 to full power, according to a news release from Exelon Corp.

The unit was taken out of service Saturday and returned to service Sunday.

Exelon said Monday the unit was returned to power after maintenance on an automatic voltage regulator, which controls electrical output from the generator to the transmission grid.

Time for campaign signs JOLIET – The Will County Clerk’s office is advising voters that municipalities are prohibited from regulating when campaign signs can be posted on residential property. A state law that went into effect in 2011 allows property owners to put up political campaign signs without any limitation on the time prior to an election, according to the news release from the clerk’s office.

Voters have begun casting their ballots for Nov. 4 election

“It’s always very smooth voting here,” he said, after scanning in his voting card at the Will County Clerk’s Office on Monday. “I may be so busy I forget or can’t vote on Election Day. This is more efficient.”

Monday marked the first day for early voting at places other than Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots’ office, which has introduced changes to the voting process to make it easier and more comfortable to vote before the Nov. 4 general election.

Permanent Polling Places The biggest change to voting this year is extended hours at several permanent polling places.

“It’s all about making voting convenient,” Voots said.

The permanent polling places are located throughout Will County and are available to any registered or unregistered resident.

The permanent polling places are at Voots’ office at 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet; the Joliet Park District at 3000 W. Jefferson St., Joliet; the city of Naperville at 400 S. Eagle St., Naperville; Wheatland Township at 4232 Tower Court, Naperville; and the village of Bolingbrook at 375 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook.

Previously, only Voots’ office was a designated permanent polling place.

While anyone can vote early at the permanent locations, only registered voters can vote at local municipal clerks’ offices. This year, grace period voting allows unregistered voters to vote at the permanent polling places up through Election Day. Cities and villages with early and absentee voting services for registered voters include Braidwood, Wilmington, Channahon, Elwood, Frankfort, Homer Glen, Manhattan, Mokena, Monee, New Lenox, Peotone, Plainfield, Romeoville and Shorewood.

Townships with the same voting services are Crete, Frankfort, Homer, Lockport, Troy and Washington townships.

Early voting To aid in voting, the clerk’s

office has mailed sample voting cards to every Will County household.

The cards have candidates specific to the districts and positions of each particular household. They also include instructions on how to register to vote absentee, early or at the booths on Election Day.

Voots said the early voting process is much different than the last gubernatorial race four years ago, when early and absentee voting accounted for 20,171 of the 194,490 ballots cast, or 10.37 percent.

“The laws for early voting were different during the last

governor’s race,” Voots said.

“Years ago, you didn’t have as many polling places as today.”

Plainfield resident Ron Drumm participated in early voting for the first time Monday and said the process was much more efficient and less time-consuming than Election Day. “You get through the line quicker,” Drumm said. “It was much easier this time.

You’ve got to voice your opinion by voting.”

Joliet resident Phyllis Keca, who remembers when she was feet away from President John F. Kennedy at a rally in Joliet, said she votes early because Election Day may not present the best circumstances.

“I don’t know if there will be bad weather,” she said. “I did spend time studying the candidates, but sometimes it’s difficult to know.”

Voting options There are several ways to vote before Nov. 4.

Absentee voting allows registered voters to cast an absentee ballot without question through mail or in person.

Ballots must be mailed before Oct. 30, while registered voters can vote absentee up through the day before the election.

Unregistered voters must register and vote on the same day at a permanent polling place through Nov. 4. Grace period ballots cast on Nov. 3 or 4 are considered provisional and subject to an election judge’s review.

Voters are encouraged to request an absentee ballot by emailing absentee@willcountyillinois.com or calling the Will County clerk’s office at 815-740-4632.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Jon Stratton will be reinstated as Plainfield deputy fire chief after an agreement was reached between Stratton and the Plainfield Fire Protection District.

The decision was an nounced Monday morning after a closed session during a special meeting of the fire district board.

Agreement details, an explanation of why Stratton was originally put on administrative leave and the scope of discussions between the two sides were not available at the meeting.

“The district will be issuing a press release sometime within the next 24 hours,” said Tom Gilbert, fire district attorney.

“But just to eliminate any suspense, Mr. Stratton will be returning as our deputy chief.”

The announcement was met with resounding applause from the nearly 50 people at the meeting. Several people hugged Stratton afterward.

“I’m just glad to come back

to work,” Stratton said. “I can’t wait to put a uniform on and get back to work.”

Stratton was abruptly put on administrative leave from the fire district on Oct. 1. Since then, there have been three public meetings, comments of public support and a demand for answers as to why Stratton was disciplined.

Plainfield resident Tom Paul said he has known Stratton for more than 20 years, and Stratton’s struggle to get his job back has inspired him into civic service. He plans to run for fire district trustee next year.

“No one has more love and dedication for his town,” Paul said. “The decision made today was the right decision.”

Resident Cassandra Krasuski said Stratton couldn’t have done anything to deserve administrative leave.

“He has done absolutely nothing wrong,” said Krasuski, whose husband has been a firefighter with the district for 10 years. “If this hadn’t happened, he would have been a tremendous loss to the district.”

JOLIET – The night before he gunned down Briana Valle in her Romeoville driveway earlier this year, Erick Maya had another 15-year-old girlfriend “promise to wait for him” if he went to prison.

“Let’s see how long she can live,” Judge Robert Livas said Monday before s e n t e n c i n g Erick Maya to 122 Maya years in prison for Valle’s murder and the attempted murder of her mother, Alicia Guerrero.

Livas described Maya as “cretinous” and at one point described his own “revulsion” at Maya’s conduct during the trial as he delivered the sentence.

Guerrero testified at the sentencing hearing that she still has many medical complications from the Feb. 13 attack in which she was shot in the shoulder after her daughter was shot in the back of the head.

Valle’s parents had moved from Cicero to break off her relationship with Maya, who was eight years older. When Briana Valle began making friends and dates, Maya sent text messages threatening to rape her and kill her whole family, according to trial testimony.

“She never got to hear me tell her ‘I love you,’ ” Guerrero said. “In those moments of hell ... I thought, ‘If I die, who will find [Briana].’ I was her protector, but I couldn’t even take that first bullet. Erick Maya didn’t let me.”

Maya sat dry-eyed and stared down throughout Monday’s court proceedings. Valle’s relatives left the courtroom when he made a statement to the court proclaiming his innocence.

“I’m a wrongfully convicted man who ... will spend the rest of my life in a cage for something I didn’t do,” Maya said. “No one can identify me at the crime scene because I wasn’t there.”

Maya said police “corrupted” the investigation by focusing on him when other suspects had been in the neighborhood.

But the judge said the police work presented in the case against Maya was some of the most efficient he’d ever seen.

Livas also praised Valle’s parents for “doing everything right” to keep her away from a sexual predator.

“And the family has every right to look at me [and the system] and say ‘We did everything right and our daughter is still dead,’ ” Livas said.

Guerrero, her father Alejandro Valle and younger brother Jesse Valle all agreed a void has been left in their lives by Briana Valle’s murder.

“I have no one to talk to anymore. I feel so alone,” Jesse Valle wrote to describe the impact of Maya’s crime.

“I feel like, what is the point in life now?”

Livas said he hoped Briana Valle’s relatives will live instead of merely exist to keep Maya from accomplishing the destruction of her family as he’d wanted.

“For two weeks of the trial, I had to look at the defendant walk in the door with

that idiotic smirk on his face, as if he was proud of something he did,” Livas said.

“When there was testimony about the list of firsts he sent her, I had to make sure the jury didn’t see my revulsion when he laughed at, ‘I was your first order of protection.’ I’ve seen some cretinous things crawl into my courtroom but [Maya’s] at the top,” Livas said.

Livas said while he was aware of legal sentences, he speculated “true justice” would be putting Maya alone in a room with Valle’s father.

Livas said he expected Maya would deny his crime up to the end, but doubts he’s able to “con adults as easily as 15-year-old girls.”

Livas noted Maya requested a new trial saying his sanity had never been examined and that he’d been hospitalized with mental disorders as a teenager. But Livas noted Maya had denied any diagnoses in his sentencing interviews, which were reviewed in court Monday morning.

“At which point was he lying?” Livas asked.

Livas scoffed at Maya’s claims he wasn’t at the crime scene when police found the Cicero man hiding under a porch a block away after surrounding the neighborhood.

“Did he take a taxi out to his favorite camping spot in 10 degree weather under someone else’s porch?” Livas said.

Livas said Maya had shown no mercy to the Valles and should expect none.

“If you really want to punish someone, you take away their hope,” Livas said.

A LESSON IN HISTORY Civil War re-enactment held in Channahon

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Dollinger Family Farm was transformed into a battleground this weekend when it hosted the 19th Civil War Days re-enactment.

The farmgrounds in Channahon were filled with tents housing Confederate and Union soldiers.

Spectators witnessed lifelike drills on the battlefield, from infantry to cavalry to artillery. President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln gathered children near the stage for a short program. The great generals of the time held a public discussion of their battlefield blunders and then a show-andtell.

Later there were post-battle medical demonstrations on the battlefield and President Lincoln recited the Gettysburg Address.

Before the Saturday afternoon battle, Union infantrymen prepared for what they knew would be a long march to a tough battle.

“In this scenario we are on a campaign and marching into battle,” said Private Samuel Marks of the 104 Illinois Infantry. “We understand the enemy is somewhere on the front and we are going to engage with them.”

Union Battalion Bugler Greg Bochniak played his company’s ditty on his horn to assemble the troops.

“That tells the soldiers it’s first call,” he said.

While they prepared themselves, women and children lined the gravel path wearing period clothing, waiting to cheer on the soldiers as they marched past. It was a tradition of the time to support the men, re-enactor Elaine Masciale said.

Up on the battlefield, Confederate infantrymen prepared their strategy. They were ready to fight to maintain control of Brice’s Crossroads in Lee County, Mississippi.

The battle of Brice’s Crossroads took place June 10, 1864, said Jerry Kowalski, also known as Major General George Henry Thomas, who emceed the event Saturday.

While the Union Army outgunned and outnumbered the Confederates by nearly double, the Confederates had superior leadership in this battle, Kowalski said.

Confederates stood their ground on foot as the Union cavalry rode in on horseback.

Thousands of Union infantrymen were an hour or more behind.

The Union brought out their heavy artillery and shot cannon after cannon into Confederate lines.

But it was the strategy of Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest that won the Confederates the battle of Brice’s Crossroads.

Confederate infantrymen fell back in what looked to be a retreat, allowing Union forces to advance. But the Confederates were pulling them into a trap.

Armed man robs Joliet restaurant

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man with a gun in his jacket robbed a fast food restaurant Sunday evening.

The robbery occurred at 6:33 p.m. at Subway, 1017 Essington Road, according to

Deputy Chief Al Roechner.

“An employee said the suspect entered, came up to the counter and demanded money. She could see the black handle of a handgun sticking out of the front pocket of his jacket,” Roechner said.

After taking cash from the register, the bandit went out-

side and ran north. No one was injured.

Roechner said Monday no similar robberies were recently reported in the area.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic man about 5-foot,10-inches tall with a thin build.

He was wearing a tan

“work-type” jacket, gray sweatpants and white gloves.

Morris school closed after small fire

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris firefighters were called to Premier Academy about 11:30 a.m. Monday for a report of smoke after lights went out on the building’s first floor.

School administrators checked the breaker box and called the fire department.

“There was a fire in the electrical panel in the office on the first floor,” Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said. “We can’t do a whole lot until ComEd cuts the power to limit damage.”

Steffes said students were sent home for the day Monday because the building can’t be occupied.

Firefighters pulled out insulation from the ceiling. The

total amount of damage was unknown.

Premier Academy administration said they will remain closed until the school is deemed safe for students to return.

Morris firefighters were called out to Premier Academy on Aug. 28 for the smell of smoke in the same area of the building.

Survived by her children, Kathleen (Mathue, dec.) Baker of Cincinnati, OH, Sheila Dyer, Stephen (Junko) Dyer of Honolulu, HI, and Michael (Colleen) Dyer; grandchildren, Nicholas (Abby), Kristina and Meghan Baker; great grandson, Mathue Baker; brother-in-law, Robert Dyer of St. Paul, MN. Special thanks to in-home provider Ofelia Buenaflor.

Preceded in death by her husband, Glenn E. Dyer; parents, James P. and Margaret (Lynch) Grogan; one brother, James Grogan.

Born on the south side of Chicago, IL, a graduate of Rosary College, lived in several Midwest cities, and a resident of Joliet since 1959.

Active member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus parish, attending Mass daily.

She taught at St. Ray’s from 1970 to 2002. Catherine volunteered at St. Joseph’s Medical Center for over 50 years. She dedicated her life to her family and faith. She enjoyed nearly 63 years of marriage.

Born in Chicago to the late Sam and Theresa (Slobodnik) Chirich. He resided in Joliet most of his life. Retired from Caterpillar Inc. in 1997 following over 37 years of service.

An avid bowler for 50 years, bowling with the Wednesday Evening Alibi/Tavern Leagues and the Nighthawks Friday Morning League.

Member of the Joliet Area Bowling Association since 1992, serving as vice president and treasurer along with multiple other committees. He was inducted into the Joliet Area Bowling Hall Of Fame just last year.

In addition, he achieved a perfect 300 game. Member of Joliet Moose Lodge #300 for 44 years and the Moran A.C. A former volunteer firefighter with the Channahon Fire Department as well as a manager and coach with the Troy Baseball Association for 10 years. Sam enjoyed golfing, spending time with his family and playing with the grandchildren.

Swiss photographer Rene Burri dies at 81 The ASSOCIATED PRESS GENEVA – Rene Burri, a Swiss photographer best known for his iconic black and white portraits of Communist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara and painter Pablo Picasso, has died. He was 81.

Magnum Photos, the agency of which he had been a long-time member, confirmed Burri died in Zurich on Monday of cancer.

“Not only was he one of the great post-war photogra-

phers, he was also one of the most generous people I have had the privilege to meet,” Martin Parr, the president of Magnum Photos, said in a statement. “His contribution to Magnum and his unrivalled ability to tell stories and entertain us over this time will be part of his enormous legacy.”

Born in Zurich in 1933, Burri was just a teenager when in 1946 he witnessed a visit to Switzerland by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Borrowing his fa-

ther’s camera he took a picture of Churchill standing in an open-top car, the roadside crowds a blur in contrast with the strong-jawed British leader.

After his studies, Burri embarked on a photo documentary of a school for deafmute children in Zurich. Titled “Touch of Music for the Deaf” it was published in Life magazine, when Burri was 23.

Burri frequently photographed artists, including sculptor Alberto Giacometti

and the architect Le Corbusier. An invitation to dine with Picasso in 1957 resulted in a series of intimate portraits of the painter.

He also traveled widely, including to the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, where during a visit to Cuba in 1963 Burri shot his famous picture of a cigar-chomping Che, seemingly pausing for thought during an interview.

Burri is survived by his second wife Clotilde Blanc, their son, and two children from an earlier marriage.

He was born in the town of Edroy, TX in San Patricio County on January 8, 1937, and was the son of Sisto Nino and Victoria Verellal Nino. Alcario grew up in Odem, Texas with his brother and three sisters. He moved to Aurora in the 1950’s, where he met his previous wife, Elisa Cavazos Nino and then moved to Joliet, IL and had four children.

He was a steel worker until he started working for his family’s quilting and mattress company prior to his retirement. He was loved dearly by many friends and family.

Some of his favorite hobbies were welding, construction, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren.

University of Illinois could be at turning point

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois Board of Trustees finds itself at a potential turning point as Election Day approaches.

The school’s main campus in Champaign-Urbana is set to choose a new president by late November, and the next governor of Illinois – whether incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn or the GOP’s Bruce Rauner – will decide if three members who have been on the board since 2009 will continue, The Champaign News-Gazette reported.

That includes Chairman Chris Kennedy, whose term expires in January along with the terms of Pamela Strobel and Ed McMillan.

The school’s Chicago campus also is searching for a chancellor.

Kennedy said he’s hopeful all three members don’t go at once.

“I think now the board is stable,” he said.

But even if he leaves, Kennedy said “one way or other I’d try and figure out a way to be of service to the university.”

“Whoever the governor is going to be, people are going to pay a little bit more attention to what they do than if this had happened last spring or summer,” Gaines said.

Waukegan teachers strike goes into 3rd week

WAUKEGAN – A teachers strike in the Chicago suburb of Waukegan continues into a third week.

Waukegan Public Schools District 60 said there will be no classes Monday after negotiations with the Lake County Federation of Teachers stalled last week. About 17,000 students have been out of class since the strike started Oct. 2.

On Sunday, Obama headlined a rally in Chicago for Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn. The Democrat is running for re-election in Obama’s home state.

Volunteers fix stolen wheelchair ramp

QUINCY – Roger Rupp was incredulous when he learned his wheelchair ramp had been taken from his home two weeks ago.

Rupp, a U.S. Army veteran, has multiple sclerosis. The 10-foot by 3-foot aluminum ramp helped him access a garage at the rear of his Eleventh Street house – or at least it did. Quincy Police said the ramp and two handrails were swiped sometime between Oct. 5 and 6.

After hearing about the ramp’s disappearance, a group of local volunteers sprung into action to provide Rupp with a brand-new one.

Police: Indiana suspect hinted at more killings

By TOM COYNE and MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press GARY, Ind. – Police investigating the slayings of seven women whose bodies were found in northwest Indiana over the weekend said Monday they believe it is the work of a serial killer and that the suspect has indicated there could be more victims going back 20 years.

The Lake County prosecutor’s office Monday charged Darren Vann, 42, of Gary, Indiana, in the strangulation death of Afrikka Hardy, 19.

Her body was found Friday night at a Hammond Motel 6.

Gary officials were expected to charge Vann later this week in the deaths of six more women whose bodies were found Saturday and Sunday.

Hammond Police Chief John Doughty said at a news conference Vann confessed to Hardy’s slaying and gave police information that led to the other bodies in Gary, including three on the same block.

Vann was a convicted sex

offender in Texas, where he pleaded guilty in 2009 to raping a woman and was released from prison in July 2013.

The Austin police said Monday they would review missing persons and cold cases to determine if there could be a link to Vann.

Doughty said police have no specific indication any slayings have occurred in another state, and the Gary slayings appeared to have been recent. He said Vann is cooperating with investigators in the hope of making a deal with prosecutors. “It could go back as far as 20 years based on some statements we have, but that has yet to be corroborated,” he said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety listed his risk level as “low” on its sex offender registry. He did not register in Indiana.

Court records in Travis County, Texas, show Vann served a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2009 to sexually assaulting a woman at an Austin apartment two years earlier.

Indiana authorities said Hardy, the woman Vann is accused of strangling, was involved in prostitution and had arranged to meet him at the Motel 6 through a Chicago-area website. Police were called by someone who attempted to reach Hardy and “was provided suspicious text responses that she believed to be from the suspect while he was still inside the motel room.”

Police said they took Vann into custody Saturday afternoon after obtaining a search warrant for a home and vehicle in Gary.

They found the body of Anith Jones, 35, of Merrillville, Indiana, on Saturday in an abandoned home. She had been missing since Oct. 8.

Five more bodies were found Sunday in other homes, said Doughty, who identified two of the women as Gary residents Teaira Batey, 28, and Christine Williams, 36. Police have not determined the identities of the other three, including two whose bodies were found on the same block where Jones’ body was found.

Union vs. Rauner over ‘right to work’ I wasn’t hugely surprised when Local 150 of the International Union of Operating Engineers contributed $30,000 earlier this month to the Illinois Libertarian Party’s candidate for governor, Chad Grimm.

After all, the union’s president, Jim Sweeney, was out in front of the push to beat Bruce Rauner during the Republican primary.

After a stormy meeting with Rauner, who is running on a pledge to allow local areas to opt in to “right to work” laws, Sweeney demanded that organized labor stop the candidate in his tracks.

The law would give workers the right to not join the very unions that negotiated their pay, benefits and working conditions.

Sweeney’s union contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to state Sen. Kirk Dillard’s primary campaign.

It kicked in even more to the Fund for Progress and Jobs PAC, which was the vehicle some unions used to inform Republicans that Rauner was a “closet Democrat.”

Dillard just barely lost to Rauner in the primary, but Sweeney didn’t let up. When the Illinois Republican Party committed resources this summer to knocking Libertarians off the November ballot, Sweeney bankrolled a crew that pushed back and kept the Libertarians in place.

But as it turns out, that $30,000 was just a down payment. A whole lot more help from the union apparently is on the way. Sweeney told me last week his local also is planning a full direct mail and robocall program for the Libertarian Party candidate.

The Libertarians’ Grimm is getting around 5 to 8 percent of the vote so far, depending on the poll. He appears to be taking away slightly more votes from Rauner than from Gov. Pat Quinn. The object is to push Grimm’s numbers up by telling conservative GOP voters he’s the only pro-gun, pro-life candidate in the contest.

Sweeney said last week 42 percent of his members pull Republican ballots during primaries and many of those members are pro-gun, prolife conservatives who want another option. But, obviously, the real object here is to defeat Rauner.

Sweeney said his union local had a 50 percent unemployment rate during the depths of the Great Recession. Once-proud, solidly middle-class union members relied on union-sponsored food banks. Several lost homes, cars, families.

Sweeney’s local endorsed Quinn four years ago over Bill Brady because Brady, like Rauner, favored “right to work” legislation. A huge factor in Quinn’s win was independent candidate Scott Lee Cohen’s millions of dollars in TV ads, and he split the anti-Quinn vote with Brady. The hope is Grimm can manage a repeat performance.

District 202 has a lot to celebrate You know the old song, “I Love a Parade”? Well, I really do, especially the community parade that anchors District 202’s Homecoming season each year.

Our four high schools all celebrated homecoming in late September and early October, and thousands of people enjoyed the 63rd annual Community Homecoming Parade on a rainy, cold Saturday morning.

Homecoming often means different things to people in a community as big as ours.

For example, Plainfield East opened in 2008 and saw its first graduating class in 2011, so its alumni still are very new and young. Most of those first graduates still are in college and haven’t been away from “home” for all that long.

Likewise, Plainfield North opened in 2005, and Plainfield South in 2001. Their alumni are a bit older and have started their lives beyond school.

For many, the homecoming festivities – especially the community parade – are something to share with their young families.

GUEST VIEW Dr. Lane Abrell On the other hand, some alumni of Plainfield High School – Central Campus (or Plainfield High School, when it was the only one in town) measure their time away from school in multiple decades. They can tell stories about their high school days to their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.

However, what makes homecoming special for everyone are the roots we all have in District 202, no matter how deep those roots run.

Regardless of the year you graduated or the school you graduated from, homecoming symbolizes and celebrates our shared bond with a strong, proud and successful public school system that defines the community in which we live, work and play. It reflects and shows off District 202’s past as a small, rural town, and our present

as a diverse suburban area.

As I rode in this year’s parade, I saw young faces and older faces; people of every color; and representatives of the area’s many churches, businesses and governmental agencies, all enjoying the dozens of floats, bands and school and community groups.

Of course, I was proudest of the hundreds of District 202 students, family members and staff who braved the elements to march in the parade and entertain the crowd.

District 202 has a long and proud history of community spirit and service. We acknowledge that history in different ways, including the annual homecoming and Community Parade that brings our history to life by giving us a glimpse at the past, and a peek into the future.

Judging by what I saw on that drizzly Saturday morning, the District 202 community has a lot to celebrate and look forward to.

NEW LENOX – Every team wants to peak toward the end of their season. That’s hard to do when two key starters are too sick to play.

Lincoln-Way West’s volleyball team missed outside hitter Kerrigan Fritz and right-side Michelle Allen in a 27-25, 25-18 nonconference loss Monday to Lemont. Allen will be out for the rest of the season, and Fritz is day-to-day.

Despite missing Fritz – a sophomore who averages around 10 kills a match – the Warriors (14-19, 3-3) played hard.

“We kept up with the team.

We almost beat them,” junior setter Katie Davis said. “We were positive. We were trying to gel because we had two people on the court that normally aren’t. We were communicating more than we normally do to try and make sure everything worked OK.” Davis led the Warriors with 14 assists, five kills, seven digs and two solo blocks. Rachel Johnson also had a strong performance with seven kills and five digs.

They were not the only players who stepped up. Olivia DeGroot stepped in for Fritz as one of the starting outside hitters.

“It was really cool being able to hit front row today,” said DeGroot, who ended with four kills and 10 digs. “I usually play back row for her [Kerrigan]. I was excited but definitely nervous.”

“I think they played really well,” Davis said. “Olivia was hitting awesome, playing her defense really well. Kristen [Wojnarowski] was doing a great job on the right side.”

Really good was not good enough against Lemont, though. In the first game, West had game point at 24-21 and committed a hitting error. The next point came, and it was the same story – hitting error.

Leading by a point, the Warriors passed the ball over the net to Lemont’s Ariana Ziogas, who slammed it down.

West denied Lemont its first game point but could not finish the game.

“It’s been our problem lately. We get to game point and we don’t finish,” DeGroot said.

“It stinks. We need to work on our mental. We got the physical. We have the game, the skill. We just need to work on finishing.”

While the Warriors need to work on finishing games, Lemont finally saw results in something the Indians have tried to fix all season – they came back from behind.

Similar to many teams, Lemont had trouble focusing on the individual points and focused on how far behind they were. The team had worked hard to fix that, according to libero Haley Sullivan and outside/right-side hitter Ali Lund. And the Indians came from behind strong in the win against West.

“They were winning by a lot

and we told each other get the momentum back,” Lund said.

“When we get the momentum back, we just start going and finish it off strong.”

In the few games left in the season, the Indians want to make sure that they are playing consistent volleyball through each game and do not put themselves in difficult situations.

“We usually dig ourselves holes,” Lund said. “We have to not dig holes more and not play catch-up. We have to start off strong. When we have the momentum, we are good.”

Lund and Sullivan, who ended the night with five kills and 15 digs, respectively, want the team to have as much momentum as possible for the rest of the season. It is their last few games playing volleyball as Indians together.

“We knew we wanted to have fun, “ Sullivan said. “We knew that this was one of our last few games for our seniors, so we wanted to have fun with it.”

However, why is Brandon Marshall making all the noise in there?

That said, I completely agree with Gould that the emotion and raised voices are most likely much ado about nothing. The fellas were chapped and needed to let off a little steam.

I get it, and you all should, too. There is no revolution or dissension brewing in the Bears locker room, and this is clearly not a team splitting at the seams.

These Bears just need to play better football, and maybe give the ball to Matt Forte more than twice per half.

What surprises me is how

everybody’s missing the real issue and the bigger question.

Can it really be a good thing for the Bears that it appears to be Marshall making most of the noise?

Let’s discuss a couple facts.

Marshall has done a nice job of reinventing himself and avoiding off-the-field problems since arriving in Chicago.

He’s also been pretty good at creating off-the-field distractions so far this season while his reception and yardage production are well off prior seasons.

Marshall is no longer a Denver Bronco because they

didn’t want him in their locker room anymore, and he’s no longer a Dolphin because they didn’t want him in their locker room anymore either.

So do we just wait for the storm clouds to dump all over us?

Asked if he thought it was a good thing for Marshall to be making all the noise, Willie Young – who just happens to be one of the few Bears with a right to scream – said “Everyone handles situations differently. I’ve been around guys that are very passionate about the game. I’ve been around the guys who won’t

Trestman: Two plays were key to first-half problems

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears weren’t able to sustain drives during in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins.

During his news conference Monday, coach Marc Trestman pinpointed two drive-killing plays that were indicative of the issue.

On Alshon Jeffery gaining only 4 yards on a pass play, Trestman said the receiver

“went inside instead of outside and he did everything he could to [get the first]. He thought he was going to take a hit so he went down. … We didn’t get a rap on the release.

We misinterpreted the initial alignment, and that’s what happened on that play.”

On the next play, Jay Cutler threw a shot to Jeffery downfield, which fell incomplete.

“We had called an individual route on the outside with

an option vs. bump and run to throw the ball up the field,” Trestman said. “That’s what we did. We decided to go up the field on the throw. We had a chance. We had one-on-one, and we didn’t make the play.”

Just getting that one first down on the opening drive could have changed things in a half that saw the Bears shut out for the first time since 2010.

“When you only have 18 plays, you can’t roll over the

plays; it’s hard to roll over and take shots and get up the field,” Trestman said. “It does change some of the play calling when those things don’t occur, and that’s where you lose out on the run game sometimes because you can’t roll over into some runs.”

In the game, the Bears had 14 first downs – their lowest total under Trestman – including two in the first half, compared to Miami’s 14.

The limited plays led to

statistical abnormalities, such as Matt Forte receiving only two carries before halftime.

Quick hits: Rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller’s broken hand is not expected to require surgery, and Trestman confirmed a hip injury is what kept him from returning. … The Bears announced the beginning of their 26th annual coat drive. Coats can be donated at Jewel-Osco locations in the Chicago area.

After basically being silent on the football field for 60 minutes against the Dolphins Sunday, a few of the boys on the Bears made some noise in the locker room afterward.

Actually, I was there in the middle of the media melee with everyone trying to get the scoop on why all the poop happened among teammates and friends in their club-sponsored man cave.

Clearly, there was some shouting and, as soon as that happens in an NFL locker room, inquiring minds want to know why.

Robbie Gould has been heavily rumored to be the target of some of the shouting, allegedly coming from Brandon Marshall. But Gould told Pat Mannelly and Matt Spiegel on 670 The Score Monday morning, “To be honest with you, it was just a matter of people trying to find a story, make a story because we lost.”

Not true, Robbie. I spend every Sunday and a whole bunch of my Mondays and Thursdays around NFL locker rooms, and it is extremely rare for the media waiting outside for post-game entry to hear either the level or quantity of shouting that went on in

say one word after a win or after a loss. Everyone handles it differently. And everyone’s entitled to their opinion.”

Fair enough. Asked almost the same question, coach Marc Trestman responded, “I told our team after the game in the locker room, just as I’m telling you, we have to always be accepting of how people express themselves after a game because they’re coming down from a week of working hard and building their emotions and passions for the game.

And I’m not reading anymore into it than that, and we have to be accepting and non-judgmental and let it pass.”

Here, I beg to differ. It’s the head coach’s job and responsibility to make sure he and his team don’t suffocate with their heads stuck in the sand, ignoring over-the-top behavior from a player with a track record of it.

Maybe the boss is on top of it and just telling us what he thinks he has to, protecting his troops while he handles it behind closed doors.

Maybe this is just the new Marshall and there’s nothing to worry about.

Still, it’s hard not to wonder if the Jets could use another receiver.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Alex Gordon took a big rip at a batting-practice fastball, fouled it off badly into the cage, and ducked when the carom nearly hit him in the head.

Gordon let out a huge laugh, and so did a bunch of his Kansas City Royals teammates watching Monday’s workout.

“I can’t believe that just happened, dude,” pitcher James Shields razzed.

It’ll be more frustrating than funny if those are the same awkward swings the Royals and San Francisco Giants take once the World Series begins.

Going into Game 1 on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, both teams will deal with a familiar issue this deep in the postseason: Does an extended layoff translate into rest or rust?

Buster Posey and the Giants zipped through the playoffs, and now they will try for their third title in five years.

Lorenzo Cain and the Royals zoomed along, reaching the Series for the first time since 1985.

And then, they all got some time off. Almost an eternity,

by October standards.

“It’s definitely different because we have played so many games over the last 7½, eight months. But you just understand it’s one of those things,” Posey said.

A year earlier, Magglio Ordonez and the Tigers looked

so powerful in the playoffs but fell apart a week later and hit only .199 in a five-game loss to St. Louis.

Infante played on both of those Detroit teams that got wiped out. He actually excelled in 2012, hitting .333.

“It’s a short series – you need some luck. We lost four in a row, and they were coming from playing seven. In this series, I think both teams are even,” he said.

Royals reserve Raul Ibanez, who’s enjoyed postseason success in the past, said “determination and will” carry players in the fall. Yet the timing and confidence that lifts them for so long can be lost in a hurry.

All of a sudden, a ball that might’ve been a solid double becomes a soft fly. A line drive up the middle turns into a foul ball straight back. A big hit winds up a great catch.

Just like that, a magical touch is missing, and can’t be recaptured until it’s too late.

But the real homecoming for basketball fans was Monday night when The King came back to Columbus with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

LeBron James received a thunderous ovation during the pregame introductions from the sellout crowd of 19,049 in Value City Arena on the OSU campus and the Cavaliers went on to defeat the Bulls, 107-98.

“The excitement was there

from the time we walked in the building,” he said. “It was a school night; we had a lot of kids, a lot of college kids here.

That shows the support there is. The least we can do is try and put on a show.”

The two Eastern Conference rivals did and it was the dueling guards who stole the spotlight from James.

Kyrie Irving led the Cavaliers with 20 of his 28 points coming in the second half while Derrick Rose continues to show he’s well on his way back from a torn medial meniscus in his right knee that caused him to miss last season’s playoffs.

He had 30 points in 24 minutes of play and said he liked the challenge of playing the Cavaliers.

“I’m used to playing with very good people and very good talent,” he said. “That’s all they’ve got on that team, is talent. You know when you play against them; you know you’ve got to come out here and ball.”

Irving took control in the third quarter when he scored nine points during an 11-0 run for a 75-65 lead in his second game back from an ankle injury.

James had 18 points in 31 minutes before exiting to a

standing ovation with 6:29 to play and the Cavaliers ahead, 92-81.

The ballyhooed trio of James, Irving and Kevin Love (nine points, 13 rebounds) played together for only the second time in six games.

“What I really liked obviously tonight is we had Kevin, Kyrie and LeBron on the court at the same time” Cleveland coach David Blatt said. “We got a fair view of that. I thought it went fairly well.”

Center Anderson Varejao added 22 points for the Cavaliers.

“We’re not the Big 3,” James said. “We’re a team.”

Doctors get firsthand education of nurses’ jobs at Joliet hospital

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The days physicians saw hospital nurses as inferior hands on the floor are diminishing. Today, the attitude is that nurses play a different – but equivalent – role in healing patients.

To foster that message, the doctors and nurses on Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s orthopedic floor have begun a nurse shadowing program. Physicians follow one or more of their nurses, observing how they interact with patients, other doctors, medical staff and even technology.

“I have found that doctors tend to underestimate the clinical training that many nurses carry via years on the job and/or through advanced education,” said Dr. Mike Murphy, an orthopedic surgeon leading the initiative.

A doctor for two decades, Murphy said he realized early in his career the necessity of good communication and understanding between nurses and doctors.

“The longer you do it,” Murphy said, “the more you realize how important it is.”

Several years ago, Murphy said, there was a door-to-floor program for the nursing staff, where nurses shadowed patients from the time they entered the hospital for an orthopedic surgery through the post-operative process.

The idea was for them to gain a better idea of the patient’s hospital experience, he said. The nurses also learned what the surgeons did before surgery, in the operating room and postoperatively.

“Now we decided to turn the tides a little bit,” Murphy said.

A basic understanding of what nurses do on the job is critical, Murphy said. Also important, he added, is for physicians to engage nurs-

Georgantas said Murphy noticed how many doctors work together to care for someone who might have diabetes, a heart condition and other health concerns in addition to undergoing joint replacement surgery. To ensure great care for the patient, nurses should be a part of that team as well.

The amount of technology nurses use day to day surprised Murphy, Georgantas said. Because records are computerized, nurses frequently move from one patient’s room to the computer, then to another patient’s room and back to the computer. All medications, vitals and orders are entered into the computer charts.

“Dr. Murphy was amazed because I have to enter every single medication in by hand,” Georgantas said.

Georgantas said she was glad Murphy spent time with her during a very busy part of the day. He saw exactly how many directions nurses are pulled in and how she prioritizes.

Murphy said orthopedic nurses and doctors also have an interactive learning seminar together once a month, and the department is implementing a program in which doctors and nurses participate jointly in rounds each morning. He believes all 10 of those surgeons will participate in the nurse shadowing program.

Georgantas hopes the program goes beyond the orthopedic surgeons. Georgantas said she’s seen doctors and nurses who weren’t on the same page regarding a patient, which could have serious consequences for the patient.

“Patients need to know doctors and nurses are a team, from start to finish,” Georgantas said.

Is it obvious to do the ‘obvious’?

Alfred North Whitehead, an English mathematician and philosopher who died in 1947, said, “It requires a very unusual mind to make an analysis of the obvious.”

If that is true, bridge players need unusual minds because sometimes the obvious is wrong and the unobvious is correct. And deals in which that is true are among the hardest to get right.

In this example, South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest heart six. What should declarer do after taking East’s 10 with his jack?

The auction is straightforward.

Remember, responder does not show his five-card minor with game-going values and no singleton. It is so unlikely that five of the minor will make and three no-trump fail.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, one heart (the first trick), three diamonds and one club. It looks so obvious to bash out those top diamonds. Surely the jack will drop.

And if it doesn’t, perhaps West has jack-fourth and can be given a trick, leaving the heart king safe from attack.

Finally, if East has jack-fourth of diamonds, then maybe the club finesse will work. All very easy -- but the contract fails here if East has the diamond jack. East will gain the lead in one of the minors and return his last heart.

Instead, declarer should be willing to guarantee four diamond tricks while making sure that East never gains the lead.

At trick two, South should play a diamond to dummy’s ace, then he should lead a diamond to his 10. If the finesse loses, the contract is safe. If the finesse wins and West follows suit both times, declarer will rake in at least one overtrick.

More severe hyperparathyroidism can cause bone pain and thin, brittle bones that are more easily fractured. Elevated levels of PTH and calcium can also trigger the formation of kidney stones and cause kidney damage, dehydration and confusion.

The reason your doctor has ordered an imaging scan is to check for an enlarged parathyroid gland or a parathyroid tumor.

Parathyroid cancer is extremely rare. A doctor may never see a single case despite practicing medicine for decades. I never have.

If your condition is severe enough, you may need surgery to remove the affected parathyroid gland(s). If it’s less severe, your doctor may prescribe medication. Drugs used to treat hyperparathyroidism include hormone replacement therapy and bisphosphonates, both of which help bones retain calcium. Another type of drug mimics calcium in the body, in order to trick the parathyroid gland into releasing less PTH. Fortunately, many people with hyperparathyroidism have a mild condition that never becomes serious enough to require treatment. But it does require regular repeat testing to be sure it’s not getting worse.

Dear Doctor K: A recent blood test showed that the calcium level in my blood is high. My levels of something called “PTH” are also high. Now my doctor has scheduled a parathyroid scan. Why? What does calcium have to do with the parathyroid?

Dear Reader: You have four parathyroid glands.

These pea-sized glands sit on your thyroid gland, in the lower part of your neck. (I’ve put an illustration of the parathyroid glands on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

A hormone is a chemical made in one organ that enters the blood, travels throughout the body and affects how different parts of the body work.

The parathyroid glands produce the parathyroid hormone (PTH).

The job of the parathyroid glands is to adjust their production of PTH to keep calcium levels in your blood within a normal range. If the calcium level in your blood starts to drop, the parathyroid glands make more PTH. If calcium levels rise, the glands make less hormone.

How does PTH influence calcium levels? In three different ways. Lots of calcium is stored in your bones. PTH causes the bones to release calcium into the blood. PTH also stimulates the intestines to absorb more calcium from food. Finally, PTH signals the kidneys to withhold calcium from the urine.

Hyperparathyroidism (hi-per-par-a-THIGH-roydizm) occurs when one (or more) of the parathyroid glands becomes overactive and makes more PTH than it should. Excess hormone is released into the bloodstream. The result is abnormally high levels of calcium and PTH in the blood.

If your hyperparathyroidism is mild, you might not need treatment. But
