Methodist Campground NEW LENOX – In 1867, the 21-acre campgrounds on the west edge of the village were purchased by the Centenary Campground Association of the Methodist Conference for annual summer camp meetings of the church.

Organized by four Methodist church leaders, George Barr, Charles Francis, Fred Haven and Cal Nicholas, the first meeting took place in 1868.

Through the years, many permanent structures were constructed at the Methodist Campgrounds, including an entrance gatehouse, a chapel, a bath house and dining hall. There even was an outdoor meeting area that allowed speakers to address the congregation seated on wooden benches.

Visitors who attended the summer meetings often stayed in tents, but in time, these were replaced by woodframed cottages that were constructed in rows facing each other, which were a common arrangement at camp meetings sites. Eventually, a hotel was built on site to cater to camp visitors, who sometimes numbered in the thousands. All of these structures have since been razed.

In the early years, campers to the site arrived by horse or carriage, but in time the interurban trolley operated by the Joliet & Southern Traction Company helped to bring visitors to the grounds.

By the 1920s, campers began arriving by automobile along the Lincoln Highway.

In 1927, a cabin was constructed on the site that was used for youth activities and in time it became known as the Boy Scout Cabin.

The cabin is still standing on church property today.

The then photograph shows a view of the Campground entrance just off the Lincoln Highway in New Lenox.

University of St. Francis moves into former downtown Joliet theater

JOLIET – The University of St. Francis’ move into the former Mode theater building downtown falls in line with the school’s ongoing commitment to Joliet’s revitalization, USF President Arvid Johnson said.

USF several years ago located its visual arts program in the office section of the Rialto Square Theatre downtown.

“With both those buildings, we now have students downtown every week with classes.

There’s more vibrancy and more foot traffic downtown.

Anytime you have young people in an area, it provides a good vibe,” Johnson said. “It encourages other people to be there.

“Our hope is that as students spend more time down there, it will make more and more of an impact on the downtown area.”

The three-story, 18,000square-foot Mode building at 16-18 W. Van Buren St. was renovated for $2.7 million and is called St. Bonaventure Hall. It houses USF programs in recreation, sports and tourism management, and criminal justice.

USF also has started a business incubator in the building.

Inside, there are five classrooms, space for the business incubator program, a courtroom for mock trial activities, a study and leisure area, a computer lab and faculty offices.

Classes at the Mode building began Aug. 18.

The Mode front facade was restored to the way it looked when the building was built in 1908. The former movie theater was converted into office space in the 1980s, but the building fell into disrepair and went into foreclosure.

That would be the case today but for BMO Harris Bank’s donation of the building to the university – and the city’s encouragement, Johnson said.

said the former city manager had a hand in the deal between BMO Harris Bank and USF to encourage use of the former theater.

“They did a beautiful job.

I’ve been living here all my life and I remember the old theater,” Giarrante said. “It’s been sitting there empty for some time, so the changes they made, the classrooms, the

mock courthouse, it’s a great improvement.”

Police station close to opening Building reflects growth of the village

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The new and bigger New Lenox Police Station is scheduled to open in a few weeks.

Construction of the roughly $10.5 million building, 200 Veterans Parkway near Village Hall, began in September 2013. The majority of the construction is complete, with the 31,000-square-foot building now bearing the name New Lenox Police.

All that’s left is completing the finishing touches, New Lenox Police Chief Bob Sterba said. The building may open Nov. 10 but the opening date is a “moving target,” he said.

He said village officials pursued creating a new building because they “anticipate some growth in the future.” The population and home building activity is expected to increase in New Lenox.

The current building near Haven Avenue, which is 14,000 square feet, doesn’t meet the needs of the police department., Sterba said.

“The building we’re currently in wasn’t designed to be a police department,” he said.

Police officials and staff have done their best to call the building home but the town is growing, he said.

Village Administrator Kurt Carroll said the current facility had small locker room space

and poor lunchrooms. These issues affected the police department overall, he said.

“Space-wise it was cramped in there to begin with but there was a lot of things impacting the operations,” he said.

The new building will have a larger and safer booking area and more adequate facilities for interviewing suspects, he said.

“This modern facility will easily serve this community for 50 years or better,” he said.

That’s also what New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann thinks. He said the current building was never meant to be a police station but it was retrofitted with features to make it work.

The timing for building a new facility was ripe for the village. Baldermann said village officials were able to borrow money at a cheaper rate and saved an excess of about $1 million in construction costs.

Manley and Bolton seek 98th House seat

Democrat Natalie Manley wants to serve another term in the Illinois House representing the 98th District, but her opponent Yvonne Bolton – a Plainfield Township tax collector – says she’s the better woman for the job.

Manley, a certified public accountant, was elected in 2013 to represent the Illinois House’s 98th District, which includes portions of Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield and Crest Hill.

Bolton describes herself as a stay-at-home mom with a passion for public service. She serves on several local governmental and nonprofit entities, including the Republican National Hispanic Assembly of Will County, the Spanish Community Center in downtown Joliet and the Will County

Republicans. She’s a Hispanic conservative – a “rarity in the Latino community,” Bolton said.

Bolton was picked by the Republican party to run in the 98th District when a Plainfield Park Board commissioner, Janet Silosky, dropped out of race last year before the March primary.

Public office doesn’t fall too far from the tree in Bolton’s case. Her father held public office in Guatemala for some time, she said. If elected to the 98th District, she would be the first in her family to hold U.S. public office, Bolton said.

Manley is a longtime Will County resident. She put herself through college at Joliet Junior College and the University of St. Francis, and says she’s the better candidate because of her experience as a certified public accountant – a “unique skills set” that’s critical during

budget talks.

Campaign promises

A hot-button issue this campaign season is whether the state should extend the 2011 tax hike or allow it rollback as scheduled on Jan. 1, 2015. It was a controversial topic during budget talks earlier this year in Springfield and it’s likely lawmakers will take up the issue again during the post-election, lame-duck session.

Manley was among the nearly dozen candidates who pledged to the Chicago Tribune’s Editorial Board in 2012

that they would vote to allow the state’s temporary tax increase to expire next year as scheduled. When asked Friday whether she plans to keep that promise, Manley wouldn’t say yes or no.

When asked whether she should be held accountable for her statement in 2012, she said: “I think we need to do everything we can before we entertain extending the tax increase.”

“What we need to do in front of that vote is make sure we do everything possible. We have to cut out everything we don’t need, do away with duplicative services. I’m convinced there’s a lot more we can do,” Manley said.

The income tax rate is scheduled to drop from 5 percent to 3.75 percent for individuals in January, reducing state revenue next year by $1.8 billion.

Bolton said she believes in fewer taxes and a less intrusive government but had a similar view when it comes to state government spending: the budget needs to be scrutinized lineby-line.

“We need to find out where the heck is all the money going.

We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem,” Bolton said.

But she couldn’t say where she would want to cut other than legislative salaries and “nonessential services.”

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky The staff and students at Joliet Township Central High School will honor local veterans at a pre-Veterans Day ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m.

Nov. 7 in the school’s auditorium.

Director of Alumni Relations Lynne Lichtenauer – also of the Lynne, Mary and Natalie show on WJOL – is seeking local veterans to honor at the celebration.

Lynne is looking for men and women veterans as well as women who went off to work in the factories, many in ammunition plants such as the Joliet Arsenal, during World War II. They are referred to as “Rosie the Riveters” because they took on factory jobs, replacing the male workers who were in the military.

“It would be nice if we could find a few ‘Rosie the Riveters,’ ” Lynne said. “I thought it would be nice for the women that took over for the men during the war.”

Veterans to be recognized include those from any war or conflict, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq.

Each Veteran or “Rosie” will be seated at the front of the auditorium and introduced individually with their name, branch of service and when they served, Lynne said.

Lynne is the person who interviews each veteran before the ceremony.

“I have the privilege of finding vets to honor,” she said.

“It’s just so touching to talk to them about their service.”

Students get a holiday on Monday for Veterans Day, but this way they also learn about what it truly means to have served their country.

Several elected officials will also be on hand. The ROTC Cadets, Joliet Central Band and Joliet Central Choir will perform patriotic selections and a musical tribute to each branch of service during the hour-long ceremony. Central ROTC Commander, Major Phil Jayko, will read “Duty, Honor, Country” and there will be a military video presentation.

JT students and staff will host a reception in the library following the ceremony for all military personnel, families, friends and guests. There will be a panel discussion with the veterans conducted by the students after the reception.

This is the fourth year JT Central has held this ceremony and the students have always done an amazing job, said Lynne. “[The ceremony] is so moving and so poignant,” she said.

JOLIET – MaryLu Silk was a phenomenal wife, aunt, neighbor, Catholic and championship bowler, all because of one quality.

“She made the extra effort,” said Tim Broderick of Joliet, Mary Lu’s nephew.

Perhaps it was because MaryLu’s faith was the pillar of her life, Tim said, and that spurred her onto excellence in everything.

Mary Lu attended daily Mass, prayed MaryLu Silk the rosary each day and spent hours in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. But MaryLu was also respectful toward the devotions of other faiths, Tim said, as well as to those details that made each person a delight for her to know.

“People mattered to her and she demonstrated that every day, whether someone needed a mindful ear or a few dollars,” said Anna Broderick of Joliet, Tim’s wife. “She was my confidante, mentor and a true friend.”

Second only to God was MaryLu’s late husband Art Silk. Mary Lu was Art’s “First Lady,” Tim said, always supportive of him and his business activities. She strove for perfection, to reflect well on him.

“She wanted to have the spotlight on him, not her,” Tim said. “To see him do well, that was her goal.”

MaryLu, a licensed interior decorator, had met Art, an orphan raised in Peoria by the Flaherty family, while working at Fitzgerald Furniture Store, which her parents owned.

When Art expanded his vending machine business to Joliet, mutual acquaintances arranged a date between him and MaryLu. Their Catholic faith was an instant bond, Anna said.

Although the couple was unable to have children, MaryLu poured that maternal love onto her nieces and nephews, as well as her last living sib-

ling, Kate Broderick of Joliet, all the way to her Oct. 1 death at the age of 86, Anna said.

MaryLu attended their special occasions, frequently telephoned, brought boxes of doughnuts on Saturday mornings and gold-foil wrapped chocolates at Christmas, Tim and Anna said. When MaryLu

Obama urges Quinn supporters to vote early

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama returned to his hometown Sunday in a bid to whip up support for Gov. Pat Quinn, as Democrats fight to hold control of the Illinois governor’s office against stiff challenge from GOP businessman Bruce Rauner.

A visibly relaxed Obama spoke to several thousand enthusiastic supporters at a rally late Sunday inside a packed auditorium on the campus of Chicago State University, throwing his arm around Quinn as several points and singing his praises.

“Pat is real. ... He’s not trying to pretend to be something he’s not,” Obama said after poking fun at Quinn for appearing to care little about fashion. “That’s why you’ve got to have his back.”

Obama also urged voters to cast their ballots early. A poster affixed to the podium Obama spoke from reminded Illinoisans that early voting starts Monday for the Nov. 4 election.

Minutes before Obama took the stage, Quinn derided those he described as “big shots” and “high rollers.” And Quinn said he stood for giving average people a “fair shake,” including by raising the minimum wage.

Obama didn’t speak directly about Rauner but told the crowd that “bad ideas” from Republicans had hurt Illinois and the country at large.

ELGIN – Authorities say a homeless man has been found dead in Elgin.

It was reported that the man’s body was found in a wooded area about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Better Business Bureau warns of Ebola scams

CHICAGO – The Better Business Bureau and several government agencies are warning the public to be on the lookout for scams related to the Ebola virus.

Steve J. Bernas is president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and northern Illinois.

In an emailed statement, Bernas says scammers have moved quickly to take advantage of the public’s fear about the deadly virus. The scams include con artists soliciting donations to fake charities that claim to provide relief for victims. Others say they’re selling stock for companies they claim have found a cure.

The Federal Trade Commission has issued warning letters about scammers that are trying to sell “miracle” products they claim will prevent or cure Ebola. Officials say some of these products contain untested, dangerous ingredients.

Peoria woman charged in man’s stabbing death

PEORIA – A 25-year-old Peoria

woman has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of a man in her apartment.

Police say Janay E. Hayes was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly stabbing 24-year-old Cadman M. Coates of Peoria.

Coates was pronounced dead just before 7 a.m. at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll told the Journal Star in Peoria that Coates had been stabbed at least once in the chest. Hayes is being held in the Peoria County Jail pending a bond hearing Monday.

The Carbondale Southern Illinoisan reported the explosion occurred about 7:45 p.m. Friday.

Police Chief Travis Allen said the home was on fire and a natural gas line was spewing flames when emergency crews arrived.

He says Ameren Illinois used a back hoe to shut off the gas after a gas meter on the side of the house continued to fuel the fire.

Allen describes the Campbells as “wonderful people” and said their deaths were a big loss for the whole community.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.

HAMMOND, Ind. – An Indiana man confessed to killing a woman whose body was found in a Motel 6 and told police where the bodies of three more women could be found, police said Sunday.

Gary police found the bodies of three women at different locations in Gary late Saturday and early Sunday, following up on information the 43-year-old man provided during questioning, Hammond police Lt. Rich Hoyda said.

The Lake County coroner’s office Sunday identified the victim found in Hammond as 19-year-old Afrika Hardy and ruled she had been strangled.

The coroner’s office said a second victim had been identified by family members as 35-year-old Anith Jones of Merrillville. Autopsies had not yet been completed on her or the other two women, who have not yet been identified.

U.N.: Iraq has executed 60 people this year

BAGHDAD – Iraqi authorities have executed at least 60 people so far in 2014, a United Nations report said Sunday, expressing concern that “irreversible miscarriages of justice” were taking place in some death penalty cases.

Nickolay Mladenov, the U.N. special envoy to Iraq, urged the Iraqi government to reconsider its position on the implementation of the death penalty. Mladenov said the high number of executions in Iraq is “alarming, especially since

many of these convictions are based on questionable evidence and systemic failures in the administration of justice.”

The death penalty, briefly canceled after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, was restored in Iraq in 2005. As of August 2014 some 1,724 Iraqi prisoners were awaiting execution, according to the U.N. report, citing Iraqi justice ministry figures.

Meanwhile, a suicide bomber set off his explosive belt near a Shiite mosque in Baghdad’s western district of Harthiya, killing 18 people, mostly Shiite worshippers, and wounding 32 others, said police officials.

Spaniard with Ebola beats the disease, test shows

MADRID – A Spanish nursing assistant infected with Ebola after treating missionary priests with the disease repatriated from West Africa has managed to beat it after nearly two weeks of treatment in Madrid and has no traces of the virus in her bloodstream, according to test results released

by Spain’s government.

Teresa Romero, 44, is believed to be the first person to have caught Ebola via transmission outside of West Africa in the current outbreak. Two nurses in the U.S. later contracted Ebola after treating a Liberian man who died at a Dallas hospital.

Romero, who remains quarantined at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital, must undergo another Ebola test to make sure she is virus free after testing positive on Oct. 6.

Obama switches gears, confronting Ebola head-on

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama delayed acting on immigration and an attorney general nomination this fall to dodge the politics of the midterm campaign season. But there was one topic he could not push aside – Ebola.

The past week’s jarring Ebola developments have put a spotlight on the president’s management skills just as he was earning praise for acting militarily against Islamic militants.

In recent months, Obama caught criticism for going golfing immediately after speaking about the beheading of an American, and for attending a fundraiser after an airliner was shot down in Ukraine.

This time, as the Ebola threat hit home in America, the president suddenly cleared his schedule, canceling travel and appearances to consult with Cabinet members and talk

with world leaders about how to contain the epidemic.

By Friday, he had named a point man for the U.S. response just as the clamor for an Ebola “czar” was nearing fever pitch.

“They are resisting their usual impulse to hunker down and wait it out,” said Jim Manley, a former top aide to Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid who has in the past consulted with the White House. “This time they’ve decided to switch gears if only because it hasn’t worked in the past.”

The week began with the news that a nurse in Dallas had become the first known case of Ebola being transmitted within the United States.

By week’s end, a second nurse had been diagnosed, and the hunt for possible exposures expanded from Texas to Ohio, from multiple domestic airline flights to a cruise ship denied a port-of-call in the Caribbean.

White House officials say

the president’s approach this time reflected the unfolding, real-time developments that needed ongoing decisions to help reassure an increasingly alarmed public. Seeing the issue spiral, White House press secretary Josh Earnest acknowledged “shortcomings” in the federal response and Obama himself had to call on his government to react in “a much more aggressive way.”

Still, that didn’t stop the second guessing, even within his party.

“I’m greatly concerned ... that the administration did not act fast enough responding in Texas,” Rep. Bruce Braley, an Iowa Democrat in a tight Senate contest, said during a congressional hearing on Ebola.

At the same time, the crisis seemed to narrow to a single political point of debate: Should the U.S. impose a travel or visa ban on people from the three West African nations bearing the brunt of the epidemic.

Police hunt for clues near site of Va. remains

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After finding remains that could be University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, authorities interviewed nearby residents and picked through leaves on the side of a sparsely populated highway, searching for any clues or evidence.

Forensic tests were needed to confirm whether the remains match the 18-year-old Graham. They were discovered by a deputy Saturday in a heavily wooded area of Albemarle County that is home to horse farms about 12 miles from campus. Graham disappeared Sept. 13 after a night out with friends.

Her parents were notified that the remains were found, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said. It wasn’t

immediately clear Sunday how long it would take for them to be identified. Investigators also wouldn’t say if they had found anything else.

The last person seen with Graham, 32-year-old Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., has been charged with abduction with intent to defile Graham. He is being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 4.

The remains were discovered about 6 miles from where the body of 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington was found three months after she vanished in 2009.

The Associated Press BEIJING – The most important meeting of the year for the 205 members of China’s ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee, beginning Monday, will focus on how to rule the country in accordance with law.

That has fed hopes that the party might move to respect the letter and spirit of the constitution, but some legal experts and political analysts say the country’s leaders are intent on expanding power, not limiting it.

There may be some efforts at the four-day plenum to discourage rampant corruption in low-level courts, they said, but the key goal will be to build a legal system that protects and strengthens the party’s political dominance.

“There is absolutely zero chance that the plenum session will see support for constitutional reform that imposes meaningful checks on party power,” said Carl Minzner, a law professor

HONOLULU – Hawaii residents began to relax Sunday afternoon after days of keeping a cautious eye on Hurricane Ana, which for several days has been churning dangerously close by.

Preparations for the storm began last week, with residents stocking up on bottled water, shelters opening and various events being canceled. By Sunday, all but two shelters on Kauai were closed, according to the Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross.

National Weather Service forecasters predicted the storm will pass by the island chain without doing much damage.

“The good news is, it looks like we’ve dodged a bullet yet again,” Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said.

A tropical storm watch was canceled Sunday for Oahu, the state’s most populous island.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Kauai and Niihau, and a hurricane watch has been issued for parts of

a few remote northwestern Hawaiian islands, which are home to a largely uninhabited marine sanctuary.

Forecasters said they expect the storm will pass about 70 miles south of Niihau.

There have been no reports of injuries, deaths or significant damage from the storm, which was upgraded to a hurricane as it neared Hawaii late last week.

The effects have been limited to heavy rain, large waves and some minor flooding.

But officials asked people to stay home, avoid rain-soaked roads and keep out of the ocean. “The ocean is angry today,” Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief Jim Howe said, noting that there was plenty of brown water, which attracts sharks, near popular beaches.

Kauai officials remained on alert with the storm warning and flash flood watch in effect. Kauai County Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said some beaches had been closed due to rain and high surf, but the day was otherwise typical.

A few hundred people on the island experienced power outages, but many regained service by Sunday morning.

Johnson said the university already is getting requests to have more classes there throughout the week, but filling those time slots could pose a challenge with the lack of offstreet parking downtown.

Students are being shuttled by bus from USF’s main campus to limit the influx in parking, and scheduling those shuttles can be difficult, he said.

“Right now, because we have parking [at USF], students will park there and take the shuttle. After class, they

may want to just come back here to get their car, versus if there was off-street parking downtown,” Johnson said.

“If there were more parking downtown, I really believe students would be able to spend more time, and money, there.”

Downtown parking problems are well-documented.

There’s just 3,000 spaces, and under half of those are available to the public, according to analysis done earlier this year by the Michigan-based consultants Rich & Associates. The firm was hired by Joliet earlier this year to help staff tackle the parking problems, including the city’s aged parking garages and antiquated metered parking

system.

Long-term planning

In turn, two of her nieces – Meg Honiotes and MaryLiz Whitmer, both of Joliet – helped care for MaryLu in her later years. They provided food, as well as rides to and from daily Mass, and made sure her bills were paid and clothes were clean, all while maintaining her dignity and pride, Anna said.

MaryLu also treated her neighbors with equal consideration. She brought in their mail, shoveled their snow and extended a welcoming hand.

“Her home was always open to you,” Tim said. “You never hesitated walking up to her door.”

MaryLu also was a natural athlete, Tim said. In grade school at St. Patrick’s School in Joliet, MaryLu played basketball and baseball. She also excelled at fishing and skeet and trap shooting, Tim added.

But it was Art who taught Mary Lu the game of golf, Tim said. She belonged to four country clubs – the Joliet Country Club, as well as country clubs in Aurora, Peoria and Florida – and won, as a left-handed golfer, 30 out of 31 golf championships in three decades.

“She was a gracious winner, classy,” Tim said. “She focused on the spirit of the sport and the camaraderie of the competition. You didn’t feel like you lost to her when you lost to her.”

To honor MaryLu’s accomplishments, Tim asked Sports Illustrated to feature MaryLu in its “Faces in the Crowd” features. But when a representative called MaryLu, she – thinking it was a gag – hung up twice. The third phone call convinced her, Tim said.

MaryLu’s story was published in Feb. 26, 1990, Anna said.

“She also had numerous holes in one,” Anna said, “but she never bragged about it.”

CHICAGO – One step forward, two steps back for the Bears defense.

On the heels of its most complete showing of the year in Atlanta, the Bears allowed Ryan Tannehill (325 total yards, 123.6 passer rating) to ignite for one of his best days as a pro in a 27-14 Dolphins victory that moved the Bears to 0-3 in Soldier Field for the first time since 2004.

Many of the Bears’ surprising defensive stars a week ago came crashing down to earth. Making his second consecutive start, Khaseem Greene couldn’t match Charles Clay’s speed downfield in coverage on a 25-yard catch to step up Miami’s first score.

Darryl Sharpton, who replaced D.J. Williams in the nickel package and again called defensive plays, didn’t make receivers think twice when entering the middle of the field as he did in Atlanta. The Bears’ nickel cornerback for a second consecutive week, Demontre Hurst, was a step behind in coverage and one of many Bears guilty of poor tackling.

A trio of Bears turnovers helped Miami to an average starting field position at its own 38, but the Bears allowed 10 points off the sudden changes.

Bears’ lone defensive bright spot, Jeremiah Ratliff, said over and over again in the losing locker room. “We can’t be flash players.”

Aside from Ratliff’s 3½ sacks, virtually all of the flashes came courtesy of Tannehill. He helped Miami possess the ball for more than 37 minutes by distributing the ball to eight different receivers, not misfiring until his 15th and final attempt of the second half and, like most athletic quarterbacks

that play the Bears, flummoxing the Bears with the zone read.

After the Bears began the second half by cutting Miami’s deficit in half with a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive, Tannehill and the Dolphins faced a fourth-and-1 at the Bears’ 39. Tannehill sucked in Lamarr Houston with the fake to Miller, blowing by Shea McClellin, then Brock Vereen for a 30-yard scamper. The Dolphins would find the end zone two plays later and

never looked back.

“We can’t continue to be up and down,” safety Ryan Mundy said.

“That’s what this league is about – how consistent can you be week in and week out. That’s how you earn your reputation.”

Mills’ struggles continue: The Bears needed a strong bounce-back performance from Jordan Mills after his poor showing in Atlanta. Instead, Mills proved to be no match for Cameron Wake, who blew by the Bears right tackle for a strip sack of Jay Cutler in the third quarter, and forced Mills into a pair of penalties.

Special teams improvement: On a day with few positives, the Bears did get a blocked field goal from Houston, as well as their longest kickoff return of the season, a 50-yarder by Chris Williams. Pat O’Donnell was excellent, downing two of his three punts inside the 20 and posting a net average of 45.7.

Dangerous returner Jarvis Landry didn’t have many chances, but he did manage a 31-yard kickoff return.

Injury update: The Bears only suffered one injury, but it was to one of their key players. Top pick Kyle Fuller exited with a hip injury in the third quarter and didn’t return. He was replaced by Sherrick McManis, who was playing for the first time since suffering a quad injury in Week 2.

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – Only once in the first half did the Bears get into Dolphins territory, and it resulted in a Jay Cutler interception, leading to another “what if?” situation for a Bears team that is 0-3 at home.

The pick, Cutler’s seventh of the season and fifth at Soldier Field, came on third-and-2 from Miami’s 37-yard line with 7:13 to go in the second quarter, with the Bears facing a 7-0 deficit.

Tight end Martellus Bennett ran his route toward the sideline, and cornerback Cortland Finnegan closed on Bennett from the outside, letting Santonio Holmes run free down the sideline.

Linebacker Jelani Jenkins had Bennett covered off the line, and Finnegan “squeezed” Bennett, as Cutler described it. The pass went over Bennett’s head into the arms of safety Reshad Jones, who returned it deep into Bears territory. The Dolphins went up, 14-0, three plays later and never looked back.

outside. It was a little bit high.

I think Marty saw the squeeze coming, I don’t even know if he saw it, to be honest with you,” Cutler said after the 27-14 loss.

“We’ll take a look at it on film.

“They did a good job on coverage, they really did. They mixed up, they took away a lot of the deep shots, took away a lot of the stuff 10 yards and beyond. Made it really difficult.”

When asked if he should have thrown it away, Cutler said, “No, that’s where I had to go,” and that

Bennett is a “go-to guy” against that coverage.

“I think Marty had an outside route, corner sunk inside,” Bears coach Marc Trestman said. “I think the tape will give me a better answer. That was the play design, for [Holmes] to clear to the outside and the corner came off and squeezed Marty inside.”

At first glance, and based on replays, Cutler could have had a touchdown, or at least a long gain, if he went to Holmes downfield. “I ran my route and turned around, the guy was intercepting the ball,” Holmes said.

Holmes, who ran a go route, said he didn’t see any Dolphin defensive back coming to defend him over the top. “I don’t know what happened,” he said. “I don’t know if he got hit, I just turned around and saw the guy intercepting the football, that’s all that happened.”

Trestman wouldn’t say if Cutler should have thrown it away or targeted the pass elsewhere.

“That’s always a difficult question when you don’t get to review it on tape, so I’ll just leave it at that,” he said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars are winless no more.

Denard Robinson ran for a career-high 127 yards and a touchdown, Jacksonville’s defense came up big in the red zone, and the Jaguars snapped a nine-game losing streak with a victory against the Browns (3-3).

Jacksonville (1-6) won for the first time since beating Houston on Dec. 15, 2013.

RAMS 28, SEAHAWKS 26: ST. LOUIS – Punter Johnny Hekker’s pass from the St. Louis 18 caught the Seahawks by surprise for the last of three big plays by the Rams’ special teams.

Stedman Bailey had a 90yard touchdown on a trick return that fooled the Seahawks into thinking another player was going to catch the punt.

Benny Cunningham’s 75-yard kickoff return set up an early touchdown for the Rams (2-4).

The Seahawks (3-3) dominated statistically, outgaining the Rams 463-272.

COWBOYS 31, GIANTS 21:

ARLINGTON, Texas – Tony Romo threw three TD passes, and DeMarco Murray broke Jim Brown’s 56-year-old NFL record with his seventh straight 100-yard rushing game to start a season.

The Cowboys (6-1) won their sixth straight.

The Cowboys are off to their best start since they went 13-3 in 2007 and were the top seed in the NFC before losing to New York in their first playoff game.

Eli Manning had three touchdown passes for the Giants (3-4), who have lost at the NFC East’s top two teams in consecutive weeks.

CHIEFS 23, CHARGERS 20:

SAN DIEGO – Cairo Santos kicked a 48-yard field goal with 21 seconds left and the Chiefs snapped the Chargers’ five-game winning streak.

The Chiefs moved into field goal range thanks to Alex Smith, who completed three straight passes for 53 yards.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Carson Palmer threw two TD passes in his return to Oakland to send the Raiders to their 12th straight loss.

Darren McFadden ran for a touchdown for the Raiders (0-6), off to their worst start to a season since losing their first 13 games in 1962 – the year before late owner Al Davis joined the franchise.

LIONS 24, SAINTS 23: DETROIT – Matthew Stafford threw two TD passes in the final 3:38, including the winner to Corey Fuller with 1:48 remaining.

The Saints (2-4) were in control late in the fourth quarter when Stafford found Golden Tate for a 73-yard catch-and-run that made it 23-17.

Then Drew Brees was intercepted on third down by Glover Quin, whose 23-yard return gave the Lions (5-2) the ball at the New Orleans’ 14.

Detroit caught a break when Rafael Bush was called for pass interference on fourth down. Stafford eventually connected with Fuller in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown and the win.

COLTS 27, BENGALS 0: INDIANAPOLIS – Andrew Luck threw two TD passes and the Colts’ defense dominated Cincinnati. Luck was 27 of 42 for 344 yards as Indianapolis (5-2) won its fifth straight.

Cincinnati (3-2-1), which hasn’t won since starting 3-0, endured its first shutout since December 2009 and had a franchise record tying 11 punts.

PACKERS 38, PANTHERS 17:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers threw for 255 yards and three TDs, and Randall Cobb torched the Carolina secondary for 121 yards on receptions.

Sure-tackling Green Bay (5-2) limited QB Cam Newton in the first half. The Packers

series and led 28-3 at halftime.

Newton, who had a career-high 17 carries last week, had 41 yards rushing on seven attempts. He passed for 205 yards for Carolina (33-1).

RAVENS 29, FALCONS 7: BALTIMORE – Elvis Dumervil and Pernell McPhee each had two sacks, part of a dominant defensive performance that carried the Ravens.

Baltimore (5-2) led 17-0 at halftime and coasted to its second straight blowout win.

The Ravens beat Tampa Bay, 48-17, last week.

The Falcons (2-5) averted their first shutout loss since December 2004 when Matt Ryan connected with Roddy White for a 4-yard touchdown with 7:12 remaining.

REDSKINS 19, TITANS 17:

LANDOVER, Md. – Kai Forbath kicked a 22-yard field goal on the last play of the game, and Colt McCoy stepped in after Kirk Cousins was benched at halftime to lead the Redskins.

McCoy completed 11 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a TD in his first meaningful role in a win since Nov. 20, 2011.

Back then, he led the Browns to a 14-10 victory over the Jaguars.

The Redskins (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Titans fell to 2-5.

BILLS 17, VIKINGS 16: ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Kyle Orton hit Sammy Watkins on a 2-yard TD pass with 1 second remaining. The touchdown capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive that Orton extended by converting a fourth-and-20 and a third-and-12.

Orton overcame an interception, a lost fumble and six sacks to finish 31 of 43 for 283 yards and two touchdowns – both to Watkins.

It was Orton’s second last-second victory in three starts for Buffalo (4-3).

The Vikings’ defense forced four turnovers. Teddy Bridgewater went 15 of 26 for 157 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions as Minnesota (2-5) lost its third in a row.

Bolingbrook grad Morrison’s goal: No. 1 ‘D’ for Florida

Shaw Media Correspondent GAINESVILLE, Fla – No one can forget Antonio Morrison’s stellar high school career at Bolingbrook.

Morrison was one of the best linebackers to ever play football at the school. He led the Raiders to a 13-1 record and Illinois High School Association Class 8A state championship as a senior. It was the school’s first state title.

He was named a high school All-American linebacker by USA Today (second team), ESPN (third team) and Sports Illustrated (honorable mention). He was the No. 5 recruit in Illinois and No.10 inside linebacker nationally by Rivals.com.

With those accolades, it is easy to see why he was signed by the University of Florida.

“I worked hard all through high school,” Morrison said.

“I always wanted to play for a big school. That was my goal.”

His freshman year with the Gators followed his star quality at Bolingbrook. Morrison started four times, was named to the 2012 SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team and to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

He ended the year eighth on the team with 34 stops, including 27 solo. Against Vanderbilt, he had his best game, leading the Gators with eight tackles and six solo stops. The Gators tied for the SEC East championship with Georgia with a 7-1 record before losing to Louisville, 33-23, in the Sugar Bowl.

“My freshman year, I wish we could have gone all the way,” Morrison said.

The 2013 season was more challenging to him and the team, however. Morrison ranked second in tackles for the Gators and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

He was able to play only eight games because of an injury suffered in the Vanderbilt game.

“We learned from last year, and we moved past it,” Morrison said.

Morrison came back with a vengeance and a focus this year to rival his freshman year. He is leaner and stronger. He weighs about 220 pounds, with a desire to destroy the competition.

“They can expect to see a lot of hard hitting as usual that I’ve been doing all my life, a lot of tackles and a lot of wins for Florida,” Morrison said. “I’ve been working on football all year. I’ve been working on conditioning and my knowledge of defense.”

Morrison plans for the Gators eventually to have the best defense in the SEC. “Our goal is to be the top defense in the country,” he said “We are working toward it. There is a lot of experience out there. We have a great defense this year.”

Strong communication plays a big part in Morrison’s plan for the team’s defensive strategy. Morrison said he connects well with Darius Cummings, a senior defensive tackle. They work well together.

“He [Cummings] plays right in front of me,” Morrison said. “If he doesn’t do well, I don’t do well. If I don’t do well, he doesn’t do well. It’s a mutual thing.”

Morrison has 52 total tackles through six games for the 3-3 Gators. He made 14 stops in a heartbreaking 30-27 loss to LSU and is Florida’s tackle leader for the season.

He had six tackles in Saturday’s unlikely 42-13 loss to Missouri, a game where the Gators’ defense limited the Tigers to 119 yards of offense.

The problem was Missouri scored touchdowns on a kickoff return, punt return, fumble return and interception return.

It has not all come together yet, but Morrison is doing what he can to help Florida become the best.

Royals depend on their 3-headed bullpen monster

The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Buck Showalter knew he was in trouble when the seventh inning rolled around and his Orioles were trailing the Kansas City Royals in Game 4 of the AL Championship Series.

Three innings later, Baltimore’s season was over.

In each game of the series, the three-headed monster of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and All-Star closer Greg Holland had slammed the door on the Orioles. They did it again in the clincher, a 2-1 victory that propelled Kansas City into the World Series after a 29-year absence.

Game 1 is Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants.

“That’s one of the biggest reasons they’re playing here,” Showalter said of the “Big

Three.”

The Royals had one of the stingiest bullpens in baseball this season, but the back end was especially dominant.

Herrera, who usually handles the seventh inning, had a 1.41 ERA in 70 games. Davis, the eighth-inning guy, had a 1.00 ERA in 71 appearances. And Holland had a 1.44 ERA while saving 46 games, one shy of his franchise record set just last season.

They were at their best in sending the Royals to the World Series, too.

Herrera pitched 52⁄3 scoreless innings against Baltimore, allowing just two hits.

Davis went five scoreless innings, also giving up two hits.

Holland was the only one to give up a run, but he still managed to save all four games, joining Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley as the only pitchers to accomplish the feat since

the ALCS went to a best-of-seven format.

All three relievers have four-seam fastballs that approach 100 mph, and all three have a devastating secondary pitch. Herrera has a lightning-quick two-seamer, Davis’ new cutter has been dynamic, and the vicious slider that Holland can unleash leaves hitters waving at air.

But that’s where the similarities end.

Herrera exploded onto the scene two years ago, a fireballer who never seemed to quite know where his fire balls were headed. What little command he had finally failed him last season, and he was banished to the minor leagues, where he was able to rein everything in.

Since returning to the Royals, the 24-year-old righthander from the Dominican Republic has been solid. At

The Royals tried to use him as a starter, but for some reason he couldn’t get on track.

So almost out of desperation, they sent him back to the bullpen, where he’d had success in Tampa Bay. Everything suddenly clicked. By the time the Royals were climbing into contention last season, Davis had become a lock-down eighth-inning reliever.

Holland has come out of nowhere to become one of the game’s top closers. He was drafted by the Royals in the 10th round out of Western Carolina, and was in the big leagues three years later. But after scuffling during that first call-up, Holland proved he belonged in his first full season, eventually taking over the ninth inning.

He never gave it up, compiling a 1.86 ERA in 246 games over the last four seasons.

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Brad Keselowski pulled away in overtime Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway to earn an automatic berth into the third round of NASCAR’s championship race.

Needing to win to stay alive in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, the 2012 Sprint Cup champion came through his series-best sixth victory of the year.

But the Hendrick Motorsports trio of Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne all were eliminated from contention.

Kyle Busch could not recover from an early wreck and also was eliminated from the Chase.

Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth also advanced.

Hendrick driver left in the Chase. Johnson failed to defend his championship, missing a chance to match Richard Petty with a seventh career title. Busch was second in the points race entering Sunday and appeared in solid shape to advance until he was caught up in a what proved to be a contention-killing wreck.

The drivers in danger of elimination paced the early parts of the race. Keselowski had to drop to the back of the field at the start for an unapproved change to his Ford, but he picked his way through traffic and made it to the front of the field to lead.

NAPERVILLE – The Forest Preserve District of Will County will unleash a day of doggy fun during its fifth annual “Howloween Hoopla” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Whalon Lake Dog Park in Naperville.

The event will feature a canine costume contest and parade, with prizes at 1 p.m. and a “Great Trick-or-Treat Dog Hunt” at 2:45 p.m. A dog agility demonstration will be at 11:30 a.m., and sheep herding demonstrations are scheduled for 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Free pet services will be available including micro-chipping, massages, nail clipping, teeth brushing and wellness checks. A popular pooch contest, behavior counseling, doggy games and giveaways also will be offered free.

Owners also are invited to dress in costumes, and free face painting will be available for children. Food will be available to buy. Those in the market for a new four-legged friend can consider adopting a dog from the nonprofit rescue organizations that will be present.

Dear Abby: Halloween is around the corner, and my 7-year-old daughter has decided to be a cowgirl. She wants the boots, the hat and the gun.

Is it appropriate to let her have a holster and an obviously toy gun to accessorize her costume for trick-or-treating? She would not be taking that part of her costume to school on Halloween. I live in a part of the country where guns are an important part of our culture, but I am unsure how to proceed. – Confused about Halloween in Montana Dear Confused: Guns may be an important part of the culture where you live, but how do YOU feel about them? If it’s all right with you, and the weapon your child carries is obviously a toy, then there should be no problem as you take her from house to house collecting her goodies. But there is nothing wrong with a 7-year-old cowgirl not having a gun and holster as part of her costume. If you need verification, have her check out the character Jessie in the movie “Toy Story 2.”

P.S. Having her not take a toy gun to school is wise because many schools have strict policies about weapons – including toy weapons – being brought on campus.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK The proposed improvement consists of approximately 330 CY of roadway widening excavation, 4572 SY of grinding and shaping existing pavement, installation of 335 lineal feet of 12” to 15” diameter storm sewer, 8 each storm structures and flared end sections, 1760 ton of aggregate base course, 4744 SY of pavement geogrid, 640 tons of Hot Mix Asphalt Binder, 480 tons of Hot Mix Asphalt Surface, Driveway pavement replacement, parkway grading and restoration, and other miscellaneous items.

WAGE RATES Not less than the prevailing rate of wages as found by the Village or Department of Labor, or as determined by the Court on Review, shall be paid to all laborers, workmen and mechanics performing work as indicated in the special provisions to the specifications, HUD-4010 Davis Bacon Prevailing Wage applies to the project, EEO, MBE/WBE and Section 3 Business interests are encouraged to bid.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY Each bidder shall adopt a written sexual harassment policy pursuant to ILCS 5/2-105 (1992).

BID SECURITY All proposals must be accompanied by a bid bond, certified check, a bank cashier's check or a bank draft payable to the Village of Greenwood, for $10,000.00 or 10% of Bid as provided for in the Instructions to Bidders.
