PLAINFIELD – A major industrial business in Plainfield is facing more than two dozen serious health violations, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors on Sept. 22 charged Kuusakoski US LLC with 26 serious and 35 total violations related to exposing electronics recycling workers to high levels of lead and cadmium.

didn’t immediately return Thursday phone messages requesting comment. A phone operator said the company had no comment on the violations at this time.

OSHA is citing the company with failing to train workers on lead, cadmium and chemical hazards; lack of respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs; failing to provide protective clothing; no showers or separate lunch facility to prevent contamination and ingestion; and lacking housekeeping procedures.

All the violations occurred after an inspection May 26,

according to a list of the violations posted online by OSHA. Plainfield is the U.S. headquarters of Kuusakoski, a century-old international metal and electronics recycling firm.

Kuusakoski has been touted by village officials as one of the major industrial businesses that has undergone recent expansion in Plainfield. The company also purchased Romeoville-based Vintage Tech Recycling earlier this year.

“The company must protect the long-term health of employees exposed to these dangerous metals,” Webb said in the news release.

Joliet Park District to review Pilcher Park’s disability access

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District intends to hire a consultant to review how plans to redesign roads and trails at Pilcher Park will affect access for people with disabilities.

The review is expected to delay any construction at the park until spring.

This week, the park board authorized staff to negotiate a contract with Recreation Accessibility Consultants from Hoffman Estates to review the Pilcher Park plan.

The action comes after concerns were raised by the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

cause irreversible health damage,” OSHA Area Director Kathy Webb said in the news release. “But Kuusakoski’s compliance programs lack information on controlling exposure levels and protecting workers through common-sense safety measures like wearing respirators and protective clothing.”

Kuusakoski faces penalties totaling $114,800. It must respond within 15 work days of receipt of the notice to either discuss the citation with OSHA, correct the violations and pay the penalties, or contest the citation.

JOLIET – The number of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus in Will County was up 68 percent this year, the Will County Health Department said Thursday.

However, there were no cases in the county of humans infected by the virus.

The health department issued a news release announcing that it has suspended testing for West Nile because cooler weather has arrived, lowering the risk of infection

but not eliminating it.

“There is still some risk of WNV transmissions to humans,” Will County Health Department Executive Director John Cicero said in the news release. “The first hard frost will mitigate that risk. Until that hard frost occurs, people should continue to take WNV precautions when spending time outdoors.”

The 84 cases of mosquitoes with confirmed West Nile virus is up from 27 in 2014.

Spokesman Vic Reato said the health department did not have an explanation for the

sharp increase in mosquitoes testing positive for the virus.

The wet weather this summer would not be a factor, he said.

“The mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus thrive in hot, dry weather,” Reato said. “We really don’t have an explanation.”

More than 70 percent of the positive samples were collected in Joliet and Bolingbrook. All but one of the monitoring sites reported at least two positive samples. The health department tested at 14 sites.

Take Back the Night draws attention to victims of abuse

JOLIET – The living and the dead were honored Thursday night at Take Back the Night.

The event held each year offers hope to victims of domestic abuse and remembers women and children who have died in acts of domestic violence.

“Tonight is about courage,” keynote speaker Victor Pacini told a crowd of more than 300 people gathered at First Assembly of God Church.

Pacini, an author who was sexually abused as a boy and whose sister was killed by her husband at the age of 38, offered an upbeat message and brought people on stage to join him in song.

He urged people in the audience not be defeated by their abusers.

“We don’t blame ourselves any longer,” he said. “We can do great things. Or we can live in the pain. You decide.”

60 killed in acts of domestic violence

The evening also included very solemn moments.

The names of 60 women and children killed in acts of domestic violence in Will County in the past 10 years were read aloud during a vigil service.

“Far too many women have been killed. These are the names we call tonight,”said Karen Ward with Will County Take Back the Night before she began to read the names.

“We honor the women and children who cannot be with us tonight.”

The list of names included Joslyn Woods, a 20-year-old Joliet woman who was brutally stabbed to death a little more than a year ago.

Her stepmother, Danielle Woods, was at Take Back the Night.

and to be with other families that have gone through what we’ve gone through,” Woods said.

“It’s an incredible turnout,” she said. “It helps families to be with other families, and it brings awareness in the community to what people are going through.”

From the unborn to the aged

Not everyone at Take Back the Night had experienced domestic violence.

Michelle Adams of Romeoville watched a video screen that listed the names of women and children killed by acts of domestic violence over the past 10 years.

“Watching this is disturbing with all the ages,” Adams said.

Some were very young. Two unborn children were listed – Ava Lucille Bromfield-Anicich and Baby Boy Abouelkheir.

Some were very old: Veronica Schick, 90, and Tresa McCauley, 89.

“I think this definitely does some good for families,” said Stoney Hileman, a nursing stu-

dent at Joliet Junior College.

“There are people here who are family members of those who were murdered. It helps them feel they’re not alone.”

MORRIS – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Grundy County is helping in this effort by hosting Take Back The Night next week.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday at the Grundy County Courthouse in Morris, is free and starts with a gathering at 5 p.m. before the program begins at 5:30 p.m. The event is organized

by Guardian Angel Community Services.

Sarah Denardo of Guardian Angel said attendees will hear the story of Tina Frasco, whose daughter was murdered more than 20 years ago by an abusive ex-boyfriend.

There will be several informational and awareness-oriented displays, such as “Empty Shoes,” which holds the empty shoes of domestic violence murder victims.

Attendees also will participate in a balloon release.

One balloon will be released for each domestic violence victim in the county in the past year, Denardo said.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said people often say to him domestic violence is a problem in America but not in the county.

That’s not the case, he said.

“National studies show anywhere from one in three to one in four women are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives,” Helland said. “The numbers are prominent, and Grundy County probably falls in line with the average.”

Take Back the Night had about 60 attendees last year, Denardo said, while Helland said it seems to grow in attendance each year as people hear about the scope of domestic violence and see the importance of raising awareness whether they’ve been impacted or not.

The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office also is home to Breaking Away Inc., a program that assists survivors of domestic violence with shelter provision and other services. Survivors must have reported the abuse to the police in order to obtain assistance. Helland said the office is hoping to expand the volunteer base for the program.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the Day of Unity held in October 1981 and was conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children, according to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City School District 1 will start for the second time in two years construction on a shed on district-owned property on Spring Road.

The district completed construction in December 2014 on the replacement of a shed damaged in the 2013 Diamond tornado.

That shed and another smaller shed were destroyed June 22 in the EF3 tornado that hit Coal City.

“We are not taking action on the small building at this time,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said Wednesday night after a special board meeting held to award the bid for the larger shed.

Bugg said the larger shed on the property is used for storage and by John Trotter, the tenant

The bid was awarded to FBi Buildings Inc. in Indiana for $72,898 to rebuild the 5,760-square-foot building, according to Jason Smith, a chief school business official.

Bugg said the replacement again will be covered by insurance.

The board and the district will look at other existing school property to decide where the smaller shed should be rebuilt that would better fit

the district’s needs.

After the special meeting, a Committee of the Whole meeting was held to discuss which projects the district should consider finishing while it still is under a five-year property tax agreement with Dresden Nuclear Power Generating Station.

Bugg said a district finance committee made up of board and community members who met last spring advised a list be created of capital improvement projects that need to be finished, and that the work be finished before the tax agreement ends.

One of the key projects is stadium facilities. The Committee of the Whole got a first look at what a focus group put together for the stadium and what it would look like to meet the needs of football, soccer, band and physical education, among other uses.

Plainfield man charged after fake gun scare

PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield man who caused a scare near Plainfield Central High School after police reported he had a gun that turned out to be a toy is now charged with disorderly conduct.

Timothy M. Traver, 64, of the 15400 block of South James Street, has been charged with three counts of disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday by the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Traver has a $3,000 bond, and no court date has been scheduled, said Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Plainfield police arrested Traver after receiving a call from him late in the afternoon Sept. 2, during which he indicated he

had a gun and was going to shoot anyone who came to his apartment. Police responded and Plainfield Central – located west of the apartment – was put on lockdown as students were participating in outdoor activities on school grounds at the time of the incident.

Police said at the time of the incident the man walked around South James Street and approached officers with a gun to his head that was later found to be a toy painted black. After a one-hour standoff, Trevor surrendered and was sent to a local hospital for evaluation.

Traver faces a felony charge for disorderly conduct for reporting an offense to the police and knowing there was no reasonable ground for believing it would be committed.

He also is facing two misdemeanor charges for disorderly conduct for coming out of his apartment with a gun that looked realistic, alarming Central students and apartment residents.

JOLIET – A Wilmington man charged in connection with the death of his twin brother is scheduled to appear later this month in court.

Casey E. Grskovic, 19, of the 23000 block of Widows Road, is charged with two counts Casey E. of aggravated Grskovic driving under the influence, according to Will County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Chuck Pelkie.

Grskovic was charged in connection with the death of his twin, Ross C. Grskovic, also of Wilmington, Will County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said.

Ross C. Grskovic was fatally injured in a dirt bike crash and died Sept. 26.

Casey Grskovic’s bond was set at $200,000, of which 10 percent was needed for him to post bail.

He posted bail Tuesday, according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

Pelkie said Thursday that Casey Grskovic’s court appearance has been scheduled for Oct. 20, and the appearance will be either a hearing or arraignment.

An autopsy was performed Saturday for Ross Grskovic, and preliminary reports showed cranial cerebral injury because of the collision, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The final cause of death is pending autopsy, police and toxicological reports. The coroner’s office

confirmed Thursday the death remains under investigation.

Casey Grskovic sustained injuries in the crash that were not life-threatening.

Minooka 201 board OKs budget with deficit

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka School District 201 Board of Education met Wednesday, where the new budget was presented and approved.

Superintendent Kris Monn said there were minor changes to the fiscal 2016 budget, with a $45,000 special education reimbursement from the state.

The budget was approved, with board members Doug Martin and Curt Jebens voting against its passage. The budget’s overall revenues in operating funds and non-operating funds are about $42 million, with projected expenditures at about $44.3 million, leaving a roughly $2.27 million deficit.

“We have $4.5 million less in aid through taxes than we did four years ago,” Monn said.

With Illinois Senate Bill 318 up in the air, Monn said if it does pass, it will have “happened to us at the worst time in the evaluation cycle. It’s capping taxes at a low point when we are coming out of a recession.”

SB 318 amends the Tax Extension Limitation Law in the Property Tax Code, according

to the Illinois General Assembly website. The bill makes changes concerning the definitions of “taxing district” and “extension limitation” to provide that, for the 2016 and 2017 levy years, the law applies to all home rule and non-home rule taxing districts outside of Cook County, and the extension limitation for those districts in those levy years is 0 percent.

“We are looking at ways to incorporate more income or cut where we can. It appears that the state is sending us funds this year, but we don’t know when, and the amount is always subject to change,” board President Jim Satorius said. “It really puts us in a bind to maintain.”

BOLINGBROOK – Traffic was delayed Thursday morning after a crash with minor injuries on Interstate 55 near Bolingbrook.

The incident took place about 9 a.m. on northbound I-55 just south of Interstate 355 in the Bolingbrook area, according to Illinois State Police District 5 Public Information Officer Clare Pfotenhauer.

The crash occurred when traffic came to a stop due to congestion and a car rear ended another car, Pfotenhauer said. Minor injuries were sustained, but no hospital transportation was required.

The roadway was completely closed after the incident, with traffic being redirected onto the right shoulder, according to Pfotenhauer. Lanes were open about an hour later.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 Board has approved an annual budget that is cautious about state funding.

Board members unanimously approved a fiscal 2016 budget Monday that prorates expected state funding at 85 percent instead of the current 92 percent.

Prorating is the practice of budgeting general state aid at less than what is owed to school districts, District 202

spokesman Tom Hernandez said.

“We continue, like every other school district, to watch the state very carefully,” Hernandez said. “We have done our very best in the last couple of years [to keep expenses down].”

From 2009 to 2012, the district cut $42 million in operating expenses, he said. District officials eliminated hundreds of teachers, support staff and administrative positions at the time.

Overall budget figures show revenues near $285.9

million and expenses at $289.2 million, with a deficit of $3.3 million. The transportation, tort, debt service and construction funds within the budget show deficits as well.

The budget also assumes decreasing student enrollment, which has become a trend at the district in recent years.

Under the operating budget, revenues are at $253.1 million and expenses are at $249.9 million, with a surplus of about $3.1 million. The operating budget is larger than the last fiscal year, reflecting a

2 percent increase in revenues and a 2.6 percent increase in expenses.

“We stress the operating budget because that’s what pays for salaries, keeping the lights on and curriculum,” Hernandez said.

The budget reflects no funding for major new initiatives, programs or capital project expenses, district officials said.

District 202 – along with other Will County school districts – approved its annual budget while the state continues with its own budget. Gov. Bruce Rauner and a Demo-

crat-controlled Legislature have not agreed on a budget since the fiscal year began July 1.

District 202 officials are expecting less state revenue than usual because of past funding trends and the state political climate, Hernandez said. District officials are not counting on money that may not come, he said.

“We learned a couple of years ago to simply plan for less. That way, if we end up with more, it’s better for us.

That way, we’re not losing,” Hernandez said.

PLAINFIELD – The annual budget process for Plainfield started earlier this week with a presentation on the five-year capital projects plan, including current and future road and sidewalk work.

Among several projects discussed at a meeting Monday, the reconstruction of 127th Street from Heggs Road to Tuttle Estates and pedestrian crossings throughout the village were featured in the budget report.

“We’re excited about the 127th Street project coming up to bid next year,” Director of Public Works Allen Persons said.

Road reconstruction

The 127th Street reconstruction plans have been in the works for several years. But plans are moving forward after funding and talks with the Illinois Department of Transportation progressed, consultant Tara Orbon said.

The two-lane rural road will be rebuilt as a three-lane urban road with curbs, gutters and storm sewers. A bike path will

extend from Heggs Road to connect with one at Tuttle Estates.

The work would remove narrow shoulders and steep side slopes.

The project is receiving $2 million in federal funding. Officials hope the project goes out to bid sometime next year with work starting in the 2016 construction season.

Renwick Road’s reconstruction from just east of the DuPage River to the Spangler Farm subdivision is similar in scope, Orbon said.

This project is receiving almost $1.5 million in federal funding and requires coordination with the Plainfield Township Park District and Plainfield Township Highway

Department.

Orbon said the Renwick Road project is being pushed to the end of the capital plan because of proximity to the Route 30 reconstruction currently happening between Route 59 and Renwick Road.

“We want to put some distance between this and Route 30,” Orbon said.

The village is completing several sidewalk projects throughout the village, staff engineer Scott Threewitt said.

Kremer Veterinary Service on Thursday opened a new veterinary clinic, The Animal Care Center of Shorewood, in the same building that used to house the local favorite restaurants.

“All that’s left is the drive-thru and the exterior,” said Dr. Robert Buchanan, the primary veterinarian of the clinic.

The roughly 6,000-squarefoot clinic, at 189 Brook Forest Ave., is a full-service animal care center, including services such as boarding, grooming, training, day care, surgery and adoption.

It has a dedicated space for Help Save Pets – a nonprofit humane society set up by Dr. Tony Kremer, owner of the Kremer Veterinary Services chain – with four display areas, a bonding area and several

One groomer works in a dedicated grooming space. But Buchanan said there is room for two or three groomers in the future.

A surgery room has a window for visual access for owners to see an operation if they wish.

The surgery room is accompanied by four exam rooms, a wet procedure area, dozens of kennels and dog training areas.

The clinic also boasts an X-ray machine and telemetry equipment.

“What’s unique is that we’re a full-service clinic,” said Buchanan, who lives in Shorewood.

While the clinic doesn’t have a 24-hour emergency ser-

vice, Buchanan said the hours of the clinic are long, and walkin appointments are accepted for emergencies. After-hours emergency calls are re-routed to a live person in the Plainfield location at 24020 W. Riverwalk Court.

According to site plans presented to the Shorewood Village Board on Feb. 10, the clinic has room to expand up to 7,500 square feet if needed.

Although there is another veterinary clinic nearby, Shorewood Animal Hospital at 504 Brook Forest Ave., Kremer said the new clinic fills a need in the community.

“It’s definitely an underserved area,” Kremer said. “We have a lot of folks from Shorewood going to our Plainfield and Channahon locations.”

The clinic is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LOCAL BRIEFS Minooka fire prevented from spreading to field

MINOOKA – Firefighters kept a blaze behind a closed Minooka business from spreading across a dry cornfield Thursday.

The fire caused no injuries and little property damage.

At 11:40 a.m., firefighters from Minooka, Morris and Shorewood responded to what initially appeared to be a brush fire at a house on Wildy Road near County Line Road, Minooka Fire Chief Al Yancey said. Fire crews from Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District also responded, he said.

The fire was at the closed Big Garden Landscaping, located in a house at 335 Wildy Road.

When crews arrived, they found a large trash pile ablaze. The fire extended into the surrounding cornfield, Yancey said. The high winds and dry cornfields posed a challenge to the firefighters, he said.

“Once [the fire] gets into the cornfield, you got to get it in control in a real hurry,” Yancey said.

Lana was raised and educated in Morris, graduating with the class of 1988. She married Thomas DeCamp on February 28, 1998, who passed away suddenly in May of 2001. She had a love for animals, taking in many stray cats she found, loved life, all “social media”, traveling, and most importantly loved her boys, she was the “greatest mom ever”. She remarried on February 4, 2015 to Bryan Sargent.

Lana is survived by her husband, Bryan; father, James (Donna) Tondini; two sons, Collin DeCamp and Joey Sargent; sister, Barbara (Kevin) Roe of Odell; brothers, Donald “Jim” (Tawnie) Tondini and Roland Tondini of Mazon.

Ann L. Czys (nee Barker), age 95, of Wilmington, passed away Wednesday September 30, 2015, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, with family at her side.

Born February 28, 1920 in Johnston City, Illinois, Ann was a daughter of Clara and Orin Barker.

At the age of two, Ann’s father passed away and the family moved to Carter, Illinois, where she spend most of her childhood.

Ann attended schools in Salem and later went on to work in a drug store. After moving to Sycamore, Ann continued to work in a pharmacy for 33 years. She married Edward Czys in 1965 and was a bookkeeper for Ed’s Welding Shop for 46 years. Ann also volunteered for Royal Willow Nursing Home in Wilmington, where along with her long-time friend Jonnie Morton, started the first bible study in the nursing home, which continued for 33 years.

Ann leaves behind to mourn, three step children whom she loved as her own, Mary (Ben) Wilson and David (Gale) Czys, both of Wilmington and Christine Krahn of Naples, Florida. Seven grandchildren, Mark Czys of Champaign, Bret (Jen) Czys of Wilmington, Michael Wilson of Coal City, Robyn Ybarra and Greg Wilson, both of Wilmington, Wendy Webb of Florida and Richard (Krystal) Woodward of Greenup; (11) great grandchildren, Ellie Czys, Evan Czys, Emery Czys, Brendan Czys, Blain Czys, Dylan Webb, Gabby Webb, Addyson Ybarra, Brice Woodward, Jaycee Woodward and Connor Woodward.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Woodward; and husband, Edward Czys.

Ann was a 46 year member of Grace Lutheran Church, 907 Luther Drive in Wilmington, IL 60481.

Elizabeth “Joyce” Lee, age 77, of Elwood, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Dennis Flaum) Lee of Tamarac, FL.; her sisters, Shirley Rightmire and Gloria Milligan; her nieces, Kristy Cunningham, Vicki Milligan and Peggy Milligan; and her nephew, Dennis (Sue) Carbaugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Jean Gross; and her husband of almost 50 years, George A. Lee (2014).

Joyce was born in Oak Lawn, she went to nursing school after high school and worked at Bob Roberts Hospital in pediatrics. Later she went to industrial nursing at Corn Products where she met her husband, George.

After marrying and having their daughter, Cindy, the family moved to a farm in Elwood. Joyce was a self taught “farm lady”. It was at this farm where they were at their happiest in life finding great joy in gardening, tending their land and living a simple life.

Mary lived in Lockport all her married life. She and Oscar Johnson celebrated their 68 year wedding anniversary on September 14, 2015.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Dorothy Hulbert; brothers, Charles and Wayne; sisters, Betty and Elaine.

Mary is survived by her husband, Oscar Johnson; daughter, Lynda (Ron) Caneva; son, Charles (Carol) Johnson; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Sitar, Chuck (Jen) Johnson, Carl (Kelly) Caneva, Gina Caneva (Mark Eklund); seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Joseph Hulbert.

She loved to cook and has an extensive cookbook collection.

Mary loved to go to the casino and play bingo. She especially enjoyed her great grandchildren.

Rev. Howard M. Walker, passed away at Lakewood Nursing Center, Sunday, September 27, 2015. Age 88 years.

Howard was born January 22, 1927, in Amsterdam, New York.

He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1947 with his Bachelors in Psychology being the 1st of 2 to graduate with the degree from the college. He furthered his education at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg graduating in 1950 with his bachelors of Divinity Education. Howard’s first church call was to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg, N.Y., followed by Third Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck, N.Y., Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta, N.Y., Zion Lutheran Church in Syracuse, N.Y., Freeburg Lutheran Charge in Freeburg, P.A. and First Lutheran Church in Joliet from 1974 until his retirement in 1998.

Howard married the former Lois M. Hahn on June 2, 1949, in Schenectady, N.Y. His hobbies included music, reading, photography and model railroading. Howard was a 50 year member and 16 year Board of Director member, serving also as the National Director of the National Railway Historical Society. Member of the National Model Railroad Association since high school. Founder of the Central Pennsylvania Railway Society in Lewisburg, P.A., and member of the Blackhawk chapter since 1974 serving several years as President.

Howard contributed over 450 volumes to the Railroad Museum and Library at East Tennessee State University.

Lloyd was born December 4, 1963 in Joliet, the son of Laurence and Nancy (nee Hodges) White.

He graduated from Plainfield schools, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bradley University and became a Certified Public Accountant from University of Illinois. He was currently employed as Chief Financial Officer of The Scion Group, LLC. Lloyd enjoyed planning and taking many memorable trips to the National Parks, Canada, Germany, Italy, Hungary, France and England.

He enjoyed hiking, photography and observing the world around him.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy of Joliet, IL; beloved sister, Laura of Paxton, IL; half-brother, Laurence Jr. of Lodi, CA; half-sister, Kimberly (Timothy) Gregory of Shorewood, IL; special aunt, Myrtis (nee Hodges) Bowler of The Woodlands, TX; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Probe: Fox Lake officer shot with own gun; signs of struggle

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com FOX LAKE – Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz was shot twice with his own gun, Lake County investigators said Thursday.

What investigators believe was the first shot went into the front of Gliniewicz’s bulletproof vest on the right side, and would have incapacitated him, Lake County Major Crime Task Force Cmdr.

George Filenko said at a news conference outside the Fox Lake Police Department.

“A comparison was made.

It would be similar to that of a sledgehammer hitting you in the side,” Filenko said.

The second shot, which Filenko said was the fatal one, struck Gliniewicz in the area of his upper-left chest.

Filenko would not say whether the fatal shot was fired around or pierced the bulletproof vest.

Filenko said investigators continue to pursue the case as a homicide, although officials have not officially ruled it as a homicide, suicide, accident or undetermined. Filenko said there were indications of a struggle at the crime scene,

but gunshot residue tests were inconclusive in discerning who fired Gliniewicz’s .40 caliber service weapon.

“The weapon could have been fired by Lt. Gliniewicz, or he could have been in close proximity of the weapon being fired,” Filenko said.

Filenko would not expand on what the signs of a struggle were or if other shots were fired.

Thursday’s update came one month into the investigation of Gliniewicz’s shooting death. Gliniewicz, 52, was shot and killed Sept. 1 near a shuttered concrete plant in the 100 block of Honing Road while he investigating three suspicious men, described as two white men and one black man.

Investigators Thursday also revealed more details about the morning Gliniewicz was shot. A GPS unit in Gliniewicz’s squad car showed he was on foot in the area for about 20 minutes before he radioed to dispatch that he was investigating the individuals, Filenko said.

Police previously said Gliniewicz was assigned to patrol the area, which has been the source of complaints

about vandalism, squatting and drugs.

The 30-year veteran of the police department initially told a dispatcher he didn’t need a backup unit, Filenko said. He asked for backup at 7:55 a.m., officers arrived at 8:01 a.m., and Gliniewicz’s body was found at 8:09 a.m. about 50 yards from his vehicle, police have said.

Filenko revealed investigators located nine DNA samples from unknown sources – a typical amount for a similar crime – on Gliniewicz’s things at the crime scene, and three of those pieces were of high enough quality to be run through the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

One of the DNA samples has been identified as coming from a male, Filenko said.

Investigators have taken more than 100 DNA swabs from anyone who might have had contact with Gliniewicz or the crime scene, including police, Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Chris Covelli said.

By the end of the day Thursday, investigators planned to have 30 or 40 more to send to the Northeastern Illinois Regional Crime Lab.

Gunman kills at least 10 at Oregon community college

By JEFF BARNARD and GOSIA WOZNIACKA The Associated Press ROSEBURG, Ore. – A gunman opened fire Thursday at a rural Oregon community college, killing at least 10 people before dying in a shootout with police, authorities said.

The killer, identified only as a 20-year-old man, invaded a classroom and demanded that people stand up and state their religion before spraying more bullets, one student reported.

Authorities shed no light on the gunman’s motive and said they were investigating.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said 10 people were dead and seven wounded after the attack at Umpqua Community College in the small timber town of Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. He did not clarify whether the number of dead included the gunman.

Earlier, Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said 13 people were killed. It was unclear what led to the discrepancy.

“It’s been a terrible day,” a grim-faced Hanlin said. “Certainly this is a huge shock to our community.”

Hours after the attack, a visibly angry President Barack Obama spoke to reporters at the White House,

saying the U.S. is becoming numb to mass shootings and that the shooters have “sickness” in their minds.

Repeating his support for tighter gun-control measures, the president said thoughts and prayers are no longer enough in such situations because they do nothing to stop similar attacks from happening a few weeks or months later. He challenged voters wanting to confront the problem to vote for elected officials who will act.

Police began receiving calls about a campus shooting at 10:38 a.m. The school has a single unarmed security guard.

Kortney Moore, 18, said she was in a freshman writing class when a shot came through the window and hit the teacher in the head.

The gunman then entered the Snyder Hall classroom and told people to get on the floor, she told the Roseburg News-Review newspaper. He told people to stand up and state their religion before opening fire.

Next door, students heard a loud thud and then a volley of gunfire, Brady Winder, 23, told the newspaper.

Students scrambled “like ants, people screaming, ‘Get out!’ ” Winder said. He said one woman swam across a creek to get away.

The sheriff said officers had a shootout with the gunman, but it was not clear if he was killed by authorities or whether he took his own life.

The gunfire sparked panic as students ran for safety and police and ambulances rushed to the scene.

Lorie Andrews, who lives across the street from the campus, heard what sounded like fireworks and then saw police cruisers streaming in.

“One girl came out wrapped in a blanket with blood on her,” she said.

Police lined up students in a parking lot with their hands over their heads and searched them before they were bused with faculty to the nearby county fairgrounds, where counselors were available and some parents waited for their children.

Jessica Chandler of Myrtle Creek, south of Roseburg, was at the fairgrounds desperately seeking information about her 18-year-old daughter, Rebecka Carnes.

“I don’t know where she is.

I don’t know if she’s wounded.

I have no idea where she’s at,” Chandler said.

Carnes’ best friend told Chandler that her daughter had been flown by helicopter to a hospital, but she had not been able to find her at area medical centers.

Jean Roach is truly a gem in our community and a great advocate for JACH, not only through her leadership of the gardening volunteers since the Hospice Home was built in 2004, but also through her keen ability to educate and make mutually beneficial connections in our community. We are proud of our Hospice Home gardens and grateful not only to our many gardening volunteers but also to all the 260-plus volunteers at JACH. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Joliet Area Community Hospice and an integral part of the Hospice Care Team. JACH volunteers range from students to retirees, homemakers to professionals, individuals to service groups. Although all have different reasons for volunteering, they have one thing in common: the desire to support terminally ill patients and their families during their end-of-life journey. We could not provide comprehensive, high-quality endof-life care without our trained volunteers’ contributions.

Water on Mars

To the Editor: It’s interesting space tourism, it’s neat basic research, great engineering – but from a practical perspective, does anyone have the slightest idea of how the possibility of water on Mars advances the human condition?

Compared to genomic research to prevent disease, extend human life or boost brain function, Mars liquid water does what? Basic research doesn’t need to have a mission, objective or payback?

Maybe the CIA should fund this as surveillance technology research.

A discovery of Mars life is likely to show that it has been extinct for millions of years because of hostile conditions. Perhaps Earth and Mars life have been seeded from a common source.

There are millions of species of life on Earth, if we have managed to count them all, where we barely have scratched the surface on researching.

Using a mighty pen to slay the Illinois gerrymander

Thank Massachusetts Gov. Elbridge Gerry, who in 1812 drew political districts to favor his candidates that were so distorted that they resembled a salamander.

The term “gerrymander” was born and continues as a proud tradition held dear by our own state lawmakers.

Look at our congressional map or state legislative maps: Not only do they look like the classic gerrymander, but the writhing seems to be working to beget future generations of gerrymanders. Collinsville is carved up by three different U.S. representative districts. Lebanon and East St. Louis residents’ state

concerns are treated as one.

Belleville and Brooklyn issues are treated the same way.

There is hope the gerrymander could become extinct in Illinois. Independent Maps is a bipartisan coalition pushing to amend the state constitution so state legislative districts are drawn by an independent commission. Unfortunately, they can’t change the way congressional maps are drawn through an amendment.

The group only needs 290,216 signatures from Illinois voters for a constitutional amendment, and they have reached the 300,000 mark. Still, they

intend to collect double that, or 600,000 valid signatures from Illinois voters, because they know the folks in Springfield will challenge every signature that challenges their ability to hold on to power.

You can help create the tidal wave that can wash Illinois clean. MapAmendment.org is where you can obtain copies of the petition and instruction so that your petition is challenge-proof.

After holding such an important event, the girls turned around to play the volleyball game, and Central just could not contain West in any way.

On the second serve, defensive specialist Amanda Paez served up one of the 13 aces of the match for the Tigers (16-3).

Paez tallied two more aces later.

The most impressive serving run came after setter Shannon Doran earned a kill off a sneaky setter dump.

Middle Lauren Stefanski stepped up behind the line and served six aces before Mart subbed her out of Game 1. Defensive specialist Hannah Clement subbed in, then served up an ace on her first try.

The biggest problem for Central (5-13) during the game was it could not pass in system

enough to get an offense going.

Ashley Hare had the best offensive showing for the Steelmen with three kills.

Despite working hard in practice, Central is struggling because of its opponents and because of its height disadvantage.

“We’ve been trying to work on our mental aspect of the game,” Bambule said. “We have a super tough conference.

It’s tough to play a 6-4 girl who hits from the back row like she hits from the front row, but it’s the game of volleyball.”

Aside from her six aces, that 6-4 offensive threat, Stefanski, added six kills.

Stefanski wasn’t the only hitter on the floor. Doran (16 assists) was able to spread the offense and get other hitters involved and effective.

“Shannon did a good job of setting multiple hitters,” right side Madi Mulder said. “She set

me when I was on fire and did a great job.”

Mulder had four kills off six attempts for an impressive .667 hitting percentage. All kills from the three-sport athlete came off hard swings. Outside hitter Jenny Koerner added four kills of her own.

All of the effective hitting was because Nicole Ochs (nine digs) and the back row kept the Tigers in system.

The serving, defense and offense were impressive from the Tigers, but one thing stood out more. Many times after teams dominate the first game, they fall into “let-up syndrome.”

West didn’t let that happen.

“I think that we really believed in ourselves and knew that if we had fun, kept our energy and had high intensity the whole time, that we’d win,” Doran said. “It really helped us, and we came together as a team.”

“We knew that it was going to be close, like any time we play each other,” Tigers coach Patrick Korthauer said.

“They haven’t had very many results lately, but everyone knows that they’re a solid team that can play well, as can we. I thought that we did a good job in the first half and second half of withstanding the situation. I trust our five shooters and keeper in a PK any day, but it’s just one of those coin flips.”

In the penalties, the Tigers connected first on a try by Ivan Lopez before Nayib Martinez tied things. After West’s second attempt went high, Erick Ceballos gave Central the upper hand when he scored.

“It was a tough game, but it’s always going to be tough against West,” Mar-

JOLIET – Even before the Joliet Central vs. Joliet West volleyball match began Thursday, Central’s gym was noisy.

That’s because it was a special night for the Steelmen and Tigers. The rival teams and the rival crowds teamed up to cheer on cancer survivors as they walked around the gym for the “Dig Pink” celebration.

West picked up the 25-10, 2514 SouthWest Suburban victory, but the event itself seemed more important to the Tigers’ coach.

“It’s about the event,” West coach Alan Mart said. “That’s what’s important ... . The nice thing is that we’re raising a lot of money. It’s for the community, and it’s for the Pink Heals.

We’ve known for a long time all of the people in our volleyball program and our volley-

ball family that we have lost – with Peg [Bryan], with Minnie [Bates-Hervey], with Addison [Locke], with families – this game will always mean something to us.”

Having the past few Dig Pink games be between the crosstown rivals has made it a little more special. Both teams have been affected by cancer and put a big effort into the event each time. About 1,300 shirts between the two teams were sold.

“I think it’s an awesome event,” Central coach Suzzanne Bambule said. “I wish that everyone could see how we run ours. All of the work our girls put into the pregame, selling T-shirts, selling tags and getting sponsors. They went out and got sponsors on their own. They did a great job raising money. You have all of that preparation and you have the game preparation. Whether

Now, take a look at the present. Loyola is 5-0, and among its victories is a 28-0 blanking of Brother Rice (4-1). The Ramblers certainly are a threat to win the Class 8A title, along with Homewood-Flossmoor and a few others.

Loyola’s assignment Friday night is to make the arduous trek from Wilmette to New Lenox and win at Providence, which is a modest 2-3 after winning its last two but would like nothing

better than to spoil the Ramblers’ perfect season, much as the Ramblers did to the Celtics last year.

When you analyze the game on paper, there is no logical reason to feel Providence has enough firepower to pull the upset. But to believe that is to ignore what the Catholic Blue is all about.

Providence continued to be ranked in the Associated Press state poll even after the Celtics got off to an 0-3 start.

In addition, Providence either wins this one or is in a situation where it must win its last three to qualify for the playoffs, with a trip to Brother Rice among the remaining games. If the Celtics need any extra incentive, which they probably don’t, there it is.

Loyola may win by a decent-size margin, but do not be shocked if Providence finds a way to make a game of it. And if the Celtics are within range as the clock winds down, who knows what may happen?

Elsewhere in the Joliet area, this is the weekend in the Southwest Prairie Conference when Oswego and Oswego East meet, meaning the six area schools in the league will square off in the three other games.

The matchups are Plainfield East (1-4, 1-2) at Minooka (4-1, 2-1), Romeoville (1-4, 1-2) at Plainfield South (2-3, 2-1) and Plainfield Central (0-5, 0-3) at Plainfield North (3-2, 2-1).

A year ago, Providence arguably had the best high school football team in Illinois.

The Celtics won the Class 7A state championship, beating Cary-Grove, 31-28, in an unforgettable championship game.

If there was a blemish on the résumé, it was the Celtics’ inability to produce an undefeated state championship season. That’s because Providence traveled to Loyola in midseason and dropped a 10-7 decision.

No huge surprise there.

MINOOKA – It’s rare that a team can have a successful season while also building for the future, but that is happening for the Minooka girls volleyball team.

The Indians (13-6, 7-1) rolled past Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield South, 25-13, 25-21, Thursday night. Two of the four sophomores on the Minooka roster played prominent roles in the win, as Alli Papesh – who already has committed to University of Dayton when her Minooka career is finished – had eight kills and four blocks, while Rocky Perinar had three kills and seven blocks.

Meanwhile, seniors Ginger Perinar (eight kills, 15 digs), a Southern Illinois recruit, and Maddie Alessio (14 digs, 17 service points, four aces) and junior Brooklyn Bachmann (24 assists) also were keys.

That kind of formula that has been successful for Minooka all season.

“We only had four seniors and six juniors at tryouts,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “I knew I would have to bring up some sophomores, and all four of them [Papesh, Perinar, Holly Bonde and Taylor Baranski] have played great. We have a good mix with them and the juniors and seniors. They are having success while getting varsity experience.

“I used to say we are a young team, but now I am telling them they aren’t young any more. We are 20 matches into the season. They are varsity players now.”

Those players had the lead the entire first set as Rocky Perinar had the first kill. The Indians extended the lead to 11-8 before Alessio got the serve. By the time she was done, she had mixed high, short serves with long, hard line drives to the tune of 10 straight points, including two aces, and Minooka led 21-8. Later, Ginger Perinar ended the first set with a kill from the back row.

The second set wasn’t as easy for Minooka, as Plainfield South jumped to a 4-0 lead on the serving of Sophie Berta and three straight kills by Melissa Ryan. Minooka finally tied the score at 6 before Plainfield South took a 12-10 lead.

But then Alessio got the serve and got the Indians out to a 17-12 advantage, getting two aces as well as a kill and a block

The Indians also are lacking in playoff points (opponent victories). It is unlikely they will qualify for the playoffs with five victories. So if they do not beat East, they probably would have to beat two of their last

“Our biggest downfall this year has been passing,” Prosek said. “We’ve been focusing on that all year, but you saw it tonight. In the first game, we had zero serve-receive errors. In the second, we had five. I was glad to see us finish the match, though. In some of our losses, we have let a bad stretch continue, and we were able to close it out tonight.

“One good thing for us is that we have a variety of hitters, and we can mix things up. Brooklyn Bachmann is the point guard on the basketball team, and she is used to kind of running things. She distributes the ball well. We don’t have one hitter that we go to all the time. We have three or four, and that makes us hard to defend.

“Also, we switched Rocky Perinar to the middle a few weeks ago, and she has really done a great job. We are 9-1 since we did that.”

That’s his outlook after Jackson hit a three-run homer to lead the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

The homer upped Jackson’s RBI count to eight in the last two games. The outfielder, who had driven in two runs in 24 games since being acquired from Seattle on August 31, set a career-high with five RBIs in the Cubs’ 10-3 win on Wednesday.

“It’s been a pretty good month for him,” Maddon

said, jokingly after Thursday’s game.

Jackson said he’s focused at the plate.

“It’s good to get some at bats,” Jackson said. “I got some pitches to hit, and I’m doing my best to not miss them.”

Anthony Rizzo added an RBI double and Chris Denorfia also drove in a run as the Cubs kept alive their slim hopes for home-field advantage in Wednesday’s wild-card playoff game, moving within two games of idle Pittsburgh in the race. Bears hoping to get QB Jay Cutler back against Oakland

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press LAKE FOREST – The Bears hope to get quarterback Jay Cutler back for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders and are preparing to go with Jimmy Clausen again if he is not ready.

Cutler practiced Thursday on a limited basis for the second consecutive day after sitting out last week’s 26-0 loss at Seattle because of a pulled hamstring.

He responded “we’ll see” when asked if he will play against the Raiders.

“We’ve still got a couple days left,” he said. “I don’t think we’re exactly where we want to be. But no one really is 100 percent healthy right now.”

Cutler’s return certainly would boost a team searching for its first win under new coach John Fox. He was injured trying to tackle Arizona’s Tony Jefferson on a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first

half of a 48-23 loss at Soldier Field on Sept. 20.

With Cutler out, Clausen struggled against Seattle, the first shutout against Chicago since 2002. He completed 9 of 17 passes for 63 yards, and the Bears (0-3) punted on all 10 of its possessions.

It was a difficult spot for Clausen, playing in a notoriously loud stadium against a team starved for its first win after losing the Super Bowl last season. The Bears also used a conservative game plan with Cutler sidelined.

“What we did in that game I felt like gave us the best chance, especially with what we were asking Jimmy to do,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase said. “The one regret I do have is in that second half I wish I would have pulled the trigger maybe a little bit sooner as far as being more aggressive on some of those first and second down calls.”

The Bears have also been without receiver Alshon Jeffery since the season opener because of a hamstring inju-

ry. He has been practicing on a limited basis this week but his status for Sunday’s game is unclear. The same goes for starting left tackle Jermon Bushrod, who is recovering from a concussion.

The quarterbacks have been splitting reps in practice this week. Cutler acknowledged he is concerned about aggravating his hamstring.

“If you do come back on a hamstring earlier than you want to, it’s definitely going to be in the back of your mind because there’s that slight pull. It’s an instinctual game out there,” he said. “You’re doing things on the run without thinking. To have to worry about a hamstring and moving around is something that can weigh on you.”

It wasn’t the first time Cutler was injured trying to make a tackle following an interception.

In 2011, he broke his right thumb late against San Diego and missed the final six games, spoiling a potential playoff season.

Musicians with longtime Joliet-area history now playing for fun

dunland@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Few venues form house bands led by their owners, as Gruben’s Uptown Tap in Plainfield did.

Even fewer take that band on the road. But that’s what Steve Gruben, owner and lead singer, and some fellow artists did with Gruband. Gruben feels the band is a result of casual jam sessions, as well as laid-back open mic nights at Gruben’s.

John Sather of Joliet, Gruband’s guitarist and vocalist, said those early sessions were simply musicians – their friendships dating back to the 1970s – who hung out when another mutual friend visited from Florida.

“It was nothing more than flexing old muscles,” Sather said.

Still, Sather said he was stunned when he realized the extent of Gruben’s vocal range – Gruben can sing AC/DC covers – during those impromptu concerts. Also surprising was receiving booking requests after playing ’70s and ’80s blues rock at Gruben’s open mic nights.

That’s when Sather thought, “Well, let’s see if we can glue this thing together.”

About that time, the current bass player left for an acoustic band. So Sather and Gruben contacted Greg Brucker of South Elgin – bassist for Shadows of Knight as well as the Cryan’ Shames – and asked if he could perform a concert with them.

And the concert was that night.

Brucker, who said he has worked full time as a musician since 1972, was catching up on family business related to his mother’s death when Sather called. But after reviewing the song list and realizing he already knew 95 percent of the material, Brucker agreed.

Their chemistry onstage was so strong that Gruben and Sather invited Brucker to join them – when he wasn’t busy with the other bands, that is.

Brucker didn’t hesitate.

“I said, ‘Sure, that sounds great,’ ” Brucker said.

Gruband has an acoustic version of its band known as Power Outage. To allow for scheduling conflicts, the band also has more than one musician to fill some of the roles.

According to Gruband’s website, Eric Larson of New Lenox plays drums for the band, as does Greg Votta, owner of the Wilmington-based Shear Design hair salon. John Morrison, a Lewis University music student, also plays bass.

Sather said Gruband performs mostly classic top40 commercial hits because that’s the music crowds – mainly people in their 30s and 40s, but some 20-somethings, too – prefer hearing.

“If you can put a smile on someone’s face – that’s nice, that’s cool,” Gruben said.

That gives you plenty of protein. Make changes gradually. For example, if you eat red meat every day, twice a day, try to cut down to once a day, then just a few times a week. In place of red meat, substitute healthier protein sources such as fish, poultry, beans or nuts.

Another approach is to think less about cutting back on red meat and more about how to add more healthful foods, particularly vegetables and fruits, to your diet. Why? Because piling on the produce means there’s less room on your plate (and in your stomach) for less healthful foods.

Here are some ways to work more produce into your meals: • Roast vegetables along with whatever entree is in the oven.

• Add fresh-cut vegetables into pasta sauce, casseroles, soups, stews and chili.

• Have a salad with dinner most days.

Of greater concern than lean red meat is a regular diet of processed meats. This includes hot dogs, sausages, salami, bologna and bacon. That diet is linked to many adverse health effects.

But I had a couple of grilled hot dogs on the Fourth of July and enjoyed every bite.

Of course, I’m talking only about the health effects of red meat. I understand and respect many people avoid eating animal meats for ethical reasons. That’s a different matter.

Dear Dr. K: I love red meat, and I’m not going to stop eating it. Is it still possible for me to eat a healthy diet?

Dear Reader: I can’t think of any food a person should never eat; it’s always a matter of degree. As you’ve read many times in this column, there is solid scientific evidence a healthy diet is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins such as fish, poultry, nuts and legumes.

But you don’t have to give up red meat entirely. Instead, if you are going to eat red meat, make sure it’s lean and portions are small. Registered dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the nutrition department at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has some advice for how to do that.

The first step is to choose the “right” red meat. The USDA grades meat by its fat content.

Avoid meats that are labeled “prime,” since they have more fat.

Instead, choose leaner cuts that are graded “choice” or “select.”

Look for meat that has less visible fat, and make sure the label says the meat is lean.

Leaner beef cuts include chuck, flank and roasts. For pork, go with tenderloin or center-cut chops. Chops and roasts are the leanest cuts of veal and lamb. Stay away from bacon and other processed meats; they are higher in preservatives and salt than unprocessed meats.

The next step is to cut back. Even modest amounts of red meat put you at a higher risk for developing heart disease, colon cancer and diabetes.

Try to make red meat an occasional food. Aim for no more than two servings a week, with a serving size no greater than 3 ounces (about the

There is something called “caregiver burnout,” which I’m advising you to research. When caregivers are stressed and sleep-deprived, mental health advisers urge them to find respite care for their patient. Lack of sleep can cause people to react badly.

If your family had been more supportive and you had had proper rest, you probably would not have snapped.

Dear Abby: Our family dog recently passed away after a yearlong decline. I had grown up with him.

He had reached the point where he needed daily care for his body, even though his mind was 100 percent there. Near the end, things got very bad. I got only about four hours of broken sleep a night caring for him, and no one in the family would help me. During part of his daily care routine, he had a second accident all over the freshly cleaned floor. I lost it and hit him.

He’s gone now, and I can barely live with myself.

When I think about it, I get nauseated and dry-heave. I literally hate myself. In my book, exhaustion doesn’t give anyone the right to do what I did. I’m old enough to know better. This makes me want to change my life plans and never have another pet or have children – just in case.
