JOLIET – For the past four years, Bill and Betty Lorch have paid next to nothing on their electricity bill, thanks to the solar panels they installed on their Joliet home.

On Saturday, homeowners ambitious to do the same can tour the couple’s 1911 home as part of the Illinois Solar Tour – a free, self-guided, statewide open house demonstrating how homes and businesses are using solar, wind and geothermal to become energy independent.

“I pay nothing,” Bill Lorch of Joliet said Wednesday.

Before he installed solar, his electricity bill, in the winter at its greatest, was “unimaginably costly,” he said. “[The panels] pretty much

pay for itself,” Lorch added.

Under the state’s “net metering” law, Lorch said he can sell his excess electricity back to utilities – in this case, Commonwealth Edison – at retail prices.

And Lorch said he’d like to show other area homeowners they can do the same.

The open house event, coordinated by the nonprofit American Solar Energy Society, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday statewide.

Lorch’s home can be toured anytime during those hours.

The solar panel system installation cost about $30,000, he said, but the couple ended up paying only $10,000 after receiving a federal tax rebate and a state tax credit.

Solar thermal savings About 25 minutes south-

west of the Lorch home is another environmentally friendly home owned by Warren Kronberger of Minooka.

Kronberger also is participating in Saturday’s Illinois Solar Tour.

The installation of a solar thermal system in 2005 has cut the family of four’s propane fuel use by half, he said.

The same year the system was installed, the family’s propane tank provider even asked to exchange his 500-gallon tank with a 250-gallon tank, since his fuel use had dropped so dramatically, he said.

He hopes to see people at his front door Saturday.

“If you have any interest, any at all, this gives you a chance to speak with someone who’s installed it and lived with it at the home,”

Route 66 plan would be a boost to Joliet Township neighborhood

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Leon Bilbrew calls the corner of Brandon and Patterson roads in Joliet Township his home – just as he has the last several decades.

To the south of Bilbrew’s home lies Boyd’s Quarry – and to the north lies the U.S. Army Corps-managed Brandon Dam and Locks, an area listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Nearby, there’s the historic Zarley Cemetery, one of the county’s oldest cemeteries.

But the average out-oftowner wouldn’t know it, he said.

“It’s just an area that’s lost in the shuffle,” Bilbrew said.

The historic nature and recreational opportunities in the township community located in the cross sections of Brandon and Patterson roads are among the reasons Bilbrew and Patty Nugent are hopeful about county plans to redevelop the Route 66 corridor.

the Route 53 Corridor plan, which aims to amp up the area’s attractions as designated tourists stops just off historic Route 66, as well as create new ones.

Nugent and Bilbrew are with the Will County Environmental Network, which will hold an event Saturday at Mount Zion Church in Joliet Township to give community leaders a close-up look at some the corridor’s hidden gems, Nugent said.

“Everyone who takes Brandon probably sees the quarry and the industry here, but there’s hidden gems all around,” Nugent said. “If you go onto Google Earth and put in the ‘1400 block of Brandon Road,’ you’ll see this body of water has such an azure blue,

such a difference in color between even other quarries in the area. That’s Boyd’s Quarry. As you drive by, you would never know that.”

The county’s Route 53 Corridor plan calls for the development of a recreational riverfront park and preservation area on a heavily wooded parcel of land just to the southeast of the Brandon Locks and Dam, she said.

Trails could lead to the water’s edge, whereas today, the area lacks a safe vantage point for visitors to view the dam or fish, and there are no signs letting visitors know about the area’s history.

Saturday’s event starts at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Zion Church. After a presentation about the Route 53 Corridor Plan from the county’s land use project planner, Steve Lazzara, the group will march from the church to the historic Zarley Cemetery, view the recreational possibilities at Boyd’s Quarry and then reconvene to further discuss ideas.

The event’s keynote speaker will be state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet.

Kronberger said. “You’ll hear all the pluses and minuses and we can dispel any myths you may have heard.”

One of those myths, Kronberger said, is that solar only works in extremely sunny climates “like Arizona or Florida.”

“That’s just not true,” Kronberger said. “Solar energy in the U.S., all across the U.S., is very reliable.”

Century-old Rockdale water fixture removed piece by piece

clafortune@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – Orange sparks sprayed Wednesday from the bottom of the tank at the Rockdale water tower on Otis Avenue.

Crews with Iseler Demolition from Romeo, Michigan, were on hand taking down the 100-year-old structure, at the north side of the Rockdale Fire Protection District station. By 9 a.m., the top of the tower already was gone, and a quarter of one side was missing.

Rockdale was established in 1902, and so the water tower is one of the oldest structures in the village. A plate attached to the tower showed its construction date to be 1914.

“It’s been out of commission for about 10 years,” said Jim “Smokey” Planinsek, Rockdale’s public works director. Planinsek, along with other village employees and neighbors, looked on as crews took the tower apart.

Workers crawled around on the inside of the empty tank, using blow torches to separate it into sections. They then connected a crane to each section, making their final cuts and letting the crane lower each large piece to the ground.

Below, two more workers cut those sections into smaller pieces, their blowtorches popping and hissing as they worked, sparks spraying at their feet. The smaller sections were lifted by a large forklift into a garbage bin, booming as they were dropped.

has stood empty, Planinsek said. The structure became obsolete after the village constructed two other 250,000 gal-

lon water towers.

“As the village expanded, it needed more [water] storage,” Planinsek said.

The removal will cost

Rockdale $14,000, and the crews will get the remaining scrap to sell, Mayor Sam Wyke said.

Rockdale had considered

taking the tower down about five years ago, but decided to hold off after getting prices on the job, Planinsek said.

But recently, engineers determined the tower had a problem in one of its legs, Wyke said, and officials decided to revisit the removal, pursuing project quotes about two months ago.

“After what happened in Chicago this last winter, they had a couple water tower [problems],” Wyke said. “One of them split and the water went all over. We definitely did not want to have a mishap like that.”

Surrounded by homes, were the [legs] tower to fail, the damage would have been great, Wyke said.

Once the tower is removed, the village also will remove the footing around a shut-off valve that served the tower, Planinsek said. The village will then pave over the land and it can be used for parking.

The village also may make some repairs to a well house located on the site, Wyke said.

The well house still serves Apollo Colors, 1550 Mound Road.

To commemorate the structure, Rockdale will retain a decorative ball cap that was at the top of the tower, as well as a portion of a tower ladder and a commemorative plaque that marked the tower’s construction by Chicago Bridge and Iron, Planinsek said.

School officials split on funding changes

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – A state Senate bill seeking to reform school funding statewide has drawn opposition from some school officials in Will County and support from others.

Senate Bill 16, also known as the School Funding Reform Act of 2014, seeks to change the state’s funding system into a more progressive one by supplying more money to school districts with a high percentage of low-income students, according to a state senate summary.

The bill was passed by the Illinois Senate and is under review in the Illinois House of Representatives.

Lockport Township High School District 205 and Lincoln-Way Community High

School District 210 oppose the bill, with Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley saying in a news release it would have a “devastating impact on many suburban school districts.”

James Mitchem, superintendent of Valley View School District 365U, supports the bill.

He said it will provide a more equitable state funding model for schools statewide.

Unlike the current system, Senate Bill 16 would create a single funding formula that accounts for student needs based on “weights,” such as English language learners, special education, low income, gifted pupils and transportation, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

But that poses a problem for a school district like Lincoln-Way, which has witnessed decreasing state funding in the past several years. Tingley said the bill would decrease state aid more for schools and cause Lincoln-Way to lose more than 21 percent of its current state funding.

es, the burden is put more on our taxpayers,” he said.

The bill does not take into account that a Scott district such as Tingley Lincoln-Way has fewer low-income students than others, but spends less per pupil to educate students, he said.

The district’s ability to levy local property owners is also limited by the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law. Todd Wernet, Lockport high school superintendent, wrote in a message on the school’s website that $2.6 million in state aid would be lost if the bill passed in its current form. He wrote he was concerned about the “potential repercussions” of the bill on the

school district’s budget.

Mitchem wrote in a message the Valley View schools would gain an additional $8.4 million in its per-pupil funding under the bill.

The bill is seen by some as dividing schools into winners and losers for state funding, he said.

“Theoretically, I don’t look at it like that. I look at it as SB16 provides more equity in the distribution of state funding for districts that have a proportionate number of low-income students,” he said.

Tom Hernandez, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman, said Plainfield school officials have not taken an official position on the bill, but he said anything that would cut funding “would be difficult for us and would be a real challenge for us.”

Romeoville house fire was accidental, fire chief says

vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A fire that destroyed a Romeoville home is not considered to be suspicious.

Lockport Township Fire Chief Dave Skoryi said Wednesday the blaze at the townhouse in the 200 block of Heather Court still is being investigated, but is not considered suspicious. The blaze is believed to have started in the garage.

Fire officials said the family was not present when the fire started. On Wednesday, police at the scene were talking with people who neighbors identified as the family who lived in the house.

Romeoville police declined to release any information.

Authorities have not identified the people who lived in the house.

Neighbors said the family residing in the home often cooked in their garage.

yond recognition. However, a propane tank and remnants of a stove and toaster were visibly lying at the northeast corner of the rubble. Hernandez said the family also had a refrigerator in the garage.

“I feel really bad for them because they are a really nice family,” Hernandez said.

“They were very quiet so we didn’t know them too well.”

No one was home when the fire was first reported at 3:20 p.m. according to a fire official at the scene. One man who went to see if anyone was inside was treated for smoke inhalation. Neighbors were evacuated by Romeoville police.

Rick Sartelle, who lives in the same town home as Hernandez, said he was one of the first to report the fire to officials.

“From the window we

could smell something like charcoal lighter fluid, then the wood and then we saw the smoke,” he said.

According to firefighters, flames spread into the roof of the two-story structure from the garage in front of it. The home has been completely boarded up.

Houses are close together on the dead end street in the Wespark subdivision where two employees from a property restoration company examined the damage Wednesday. The smell of smoke was still noticeable from a parking lot 50 yards away.

The fire also caused damage to the siding of the neighboring vacant home to the west.

Lockport Township, Romeoville and Plainfield firefighters extinguished the fire.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said at 10:55 p.m. the victim was walking through the parking lot of a liquor store in the 400 block of East Cass Street when a man ran up from behind her.

“He shot her several times with BB’s, including once in

the eye and said ‘I told you I’d shoot you,’ ” Roechner said.

The victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for treatment. She identified her attacker as a former boyfriend with whom she’s in a dispute over child support, Roechner said.

Court records show the 29-year-old Chicago man is wanted on charges of domestic battery filed Sept. 23 for allegedly hitting the same victim two weeks earlier.

Trustee Dave Richards said it was good that development had started on a property that has seemingly been in limbo for years.

“I’m excited to hear that somebody is interested in this property,” he said. “The way it’s laid out, with the topography, it’s a challenge.”

Richards added that the intersection is one of the gateway points to the village.

“We don’t want to rush on it,” he said.

Lockport finds new developer for Voltz building

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A Lockport building that was destroyed in a fire may be resurrected with a new developer.

Mayor Steven Streit announced at Wednesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting that the Voltz building in downtown Lockport has found a developer. He said the building has always been an “albatross in downtown development.”

But under a new owner, the building may hold a restaurant, bar and apartment.

City Administrator Ben Benson said the city bought the building last March. City officials tried to work with the previous owner to restore it after it was damaged in a fire.

The new developer plans to have the first floor of the building be a restaurant, with the second floor being a banquet or meeting space and the third floor having residential apartments, he said. The back of the building would also have a lounge.

The developer, who Benson did not name, plans to present

their plans at the next City Council meeting on Oct. 15.

“They’re still making some last-minute decisions on how they want to have their operation run,” Benson said.

The building is located in a tax increment financing district. However, the developer doesn’t plan to use tax increment financing funds nor take on any sales tax incentive or real estate tax abatements, he said.

Since it is in a TIF district, Benson said city officials must consider any and all proposals for the building, including competing ones from other developers. He said the city could accept the best offer and make a decision in November.

Sister cities Streit also announced Wednesday that city officials will seal the deal and become sister cities with Asiago, Italy.

Residents can bear witness to this union at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the City Council chambers in City Hall, he said.

City officials plan to contact Asiago city officials through Skype.

Streit said the city could make use of their partnership with Asiago by providing student exchange programs and encouraging park districts host trips to the Italian city.

Retail recruitment Next week, city officials plan to head to a conference in Chicago to talk with retail brokers and hopefully find companies interested in developing the city’s retail centers. Streit said city is now “fully armed” with the tools and information to promote Lockport to retailers.

Lockport has been working with the Retail Coach to develop its retail areas in town.

Streit said the city has been working hard to get foreclosed properties developed again.

One of those foreclosed properties is Lockport Square South, he said.

“One of the reasons that’s been empty for so long is because the bank was asking for $30 a square foot when the market value was only $14. But now that we have new buyers there that is going to start to see movement,” he said.

ROMEOVILLE – Village trustees on Wednesday were in general support of an industrial project in the dilapidated quarry site southeast of the Route 53 and Joliet Road intersection, but officials said the project is long from being finished.

Trustees were presented with a project plan that would convert 83 acres of the rough, undeveloped land into industrial complexes and a mining site. Currently, the site doesn’t have any sewer or water infrastructure, and a large portion of the property requires significant filling and levelling.

“There’s a lot of things that

still have to be done,” Mayor John Noak said, adding that the project is only in the planning stages. “The site as it is, is not desirable. It’s not a productive site for anyone at the moment.”

The current plans for the development include two separate 279,000 square foot warehouse distribution centers, a commercial-industrial center at the intersection, a 31,000 square foot warehouse and truck maintenance center and subsurface mining below the parcel.

The project would go through phases that would also use tax-increment financing.

Kelley endorsed by police unions

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – With a month to go before the election, the Will County Sheriff’s candidates are getting their endorsements in line.

Democrat Mike Kelley, a 25-year deputy, announced Wednesday the Fraternal Order of Police units for police supervisors and patrol officers in Joliet support his candidacy.

Kelley and Republican Ken Kaupas, a state police veteran who is a deputy chief in the sheriff’s department, will face one another for Will County Sheriff in the November election. Kaupas’ second cousin, Paul Kaupas, has been sheriff since 2002.

Kelley said he was “humbled and gratified” to receive the support from law enforcement officers in the county’s largest city.

“These are the people in the same field who know me as a police officer and as a person,” Kelley said. “I hope the voters from outside law enforcement notice they want to give me this support.”

Kaupas said FOP members informed him it was unlikely the organization would go against the sheriff’s deputies’ unions. Kelley was endorsed by the three unions representing supervisors, deputies and civilian employees within the sheriff’s department.

“There was no candidate forum for the [Joliet] FOP endorsement,” Kaupas noted.

The union representing all American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in the state and Fraternal Order of Police for Will County Correctional Supervisors also have endorsed Kelley.

Kelley said he and Kaupas have “about a 50-50 split” of labor union endorsements.

Kaupas listed the Teamsters,

Operators, Carpenters, Plumbers and Boilermakers unions among his supporters. He said Wednesday he plans to release a list of individual police chiefs and mayors who are endorsing him in the next week.

“These are people who understand what it takes to be in an executive law enforcement position here,” Kaupas said.

Bolingbrook police charge Naperville man with gun, drug possession

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Four teens were caught with a loaded gun and marijuana during a traffic stop Wednesday, police said.

Lt. Mike Rompa said a patrol officer noticed a maroon 2005 Pontiac with an obstructed windshield about 2:30 a.m. on Route 53 and pulled over the vehicle near Interstate 55.

“The officer could detect a distinct odor of burnt can-

nabis [from inside] and observed cannabis residue on the floor,” Rompa said.

Jamil Q. Gordon, 19, was unable to provide a driver’s license or insurance, and the vehicle was searched, according to police reports.

Police said they found six grams of marijuana, $2,841 and a loaded 9-millimeter Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun inside.

“The handgun was discovered to be reported stolen from a recent burglary in Naperville,” Rompa said.

Gordon, of the 1300 block of West Modaff Road in Naperville, was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, marijuana possession, driving without insurance and having an obstructed windshield.

His passengers, two 19-year-old Naperville men and an 18-year-old Bolingbrook woman, were questioned and released without charges, Rompa said.

The local Braidwood and Dresden nuclear plants support nearly 9,000 jobs in the state, according to a study released Wednesday that also suggests economic threats to Exelon’s nuclear plants in Illinois.

The study, generated by the Nuclear Energy Institute, was sought by Exelon as it considers closing three of its six nuclear plants in Illinois.

The economic impact of closing those three plants – Byron, Clinton and Quad Cities – is detailed in the study.

Exelon contends nuclear energy is undervalued as it faces increased competition from natural gas and alternative forms of energy that benefit from tax credits.

The study reports Exelon nuclear plants support 27,500 jobs, ranging from workers at the plants to construction crews to local retail trade. The number of Exelon workers at the two local plants are a little more than 1,800 – 898 at Braidwood and 915 at Dresden, according to the study.

The LaSalle plant has another 875 workers, and Exelon has nearly 5,900 employees companywide.

Braidwood and Dresden, which is outside Morris, do not face the same shutdown prospects as Byron, Clinton and Quad Cities because of the proximity of the local plants to the Chicago market, an Exelon official said.

But the study outlines the economic impact of all six nuclear plants as Exelon tries to draw attention to economic challenges in the nuclear industry.

“I think Exelon has made it pretty clear that several of their facilities are at risk for shutdown. We did this analysis at the company’s request,” said Richard Myers, vice president of policy development for the Nuclear Energy Institute.

No decision on whether to close Bryon, Clinton and Quad Cities will be made until at least mid-2015, Exelon spokesman Craig Nesbit said. But Exelon wants to get the attention of policymakers as it makes a case that nuclear energy is undervalued, Nesbit said.

OBITUARIES JOSEPHINE BARRON Josephine “Pina” Barron (nee Mirelez), age 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, September 30, 2014.

Josephine is survived by her loving and caring daughter, Linda (the late Pedro) Rodriguez; one grandson, Rene (Felicia Salinas) Rodriguez; one great-granddaughter, Liliana Paloma; sisters, Mary “Lucy” Esquivel, Maria Chadwick of Whittier, CA; brother, Raymond Mirelez; sister-in-law, Arlene (the late Fred) Mirelez; her special nieces that were like daughters to her, Sylvia Esquivel, Gloria (James) Coyl and Lisa (Edgar) Gonzalez; and special nephew, Oscar Esquivel. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Adolph Barron; two sons in infancy; parents, Cleofus and Maria (nee Leon) Mirelez; brothers, Jeronimo “Jerry” (Hope) Mirelez and Alfredo “Fred” Mirelez.

Josephine was born and raised in Pittsburg, Oklahoma, where she met her beloved husband, Adolph.

She later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the early 1950’s, where she was employed at Beamus Bag Company for several years. Josephine then moved to Joliet in 1963, where she worked at Titan Company in Lockport, for a few years.

What brought Josephine the most joy and happiness was being a wonderful mother and homemaker.

She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, and clothing for her family. Pina was also a great cook, being famous for her “Oklahoma Tacos.” Josephine loved music, loved to dance and had a quick witted sense of humor that made everyone laugh. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A special thank you to care givers, Mariana Perez and Lisa Medina; Dr. Chawla, Dr. Kisel, Dr. Freeman and their staff for all of the care and compassion that they had for my mother for many years; thank you to the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home for all of the comfort and care provided to my mom.

He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, and also completed management training at Illinois Benedictine University.

Bob was a registered Professional Engineer and retired from Electro-Motive with over 30 years of service as a mechanical engineer and head of the Air Brake Division. He also designed and held a patent for a locomotive air brake system.

Mock, 1st female pilot to circle globe, dies at 88

By DAN SEWELL The Associated Press Fifty years after she made aviation history, Jerrie Mock chuckled when asked whether she ever got scared while circling the globe alone.

“Scared? Let’s not use the word scared,” she said.

But she had plenty of harrowing moments, from landing by mistake on an Egyptian military base to seeing a burning wire aboard her plane loaded with extra fuel.

Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock, the Ohio housewife who became the first female pilot to fly solo around the world, died Tuesday in her sleep at her Quincy, Florida, home, grandson Chris Flocken said Wednesday. She was 88 and had been in declining health for months.

She was inspired as a child

by Amelia Earhart. But while she considered Earhart her hero, Mock said she didn’t dwell on the aviation pioneer’s fate as she made her own journey 27 years after Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared in the South Pacific while Earhart was trying to become the first female aviator around the globe.

Mock played down her trip as a fun adventure. She flew her single-engine Cessna 180 “Spirit of Columbus” 23,000 miles in 29-plus days before landing in Ohio’s capital city on April 17, 1964. On her trip, she made stops in places such as the Azores, Casablanca, Cairo and Calcutta.

“Airplanes are meant to fly. I was completely confident in my plane,” she said in an interview in April.

She also had to act quickly when she noticed a burning wire while flying over a desert in the Middle East; she switched it off and watched it cool down while considering what could have happened on her fuel-laden plane.

Dubbed “the flying housewife” at the time, the Newark, Ohio, native was a mother of three in suburban Columbus but also an experienced pilot who studied aeronautical engineering at Ohio State University. She spent months planning her flight with aviation experts and veteran pilots.

Mock was honored at the White House by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and appeared on national TV. She later added several aviation speed records.

“Nobody was going to tell me I couldn’t do it because I

was a woman,” said Mock, who wore a skirt and blouse on her flight and put on high heels after landings.

A life-sized bronze statue depicting Mock holding a globe was unveiled in April at Port Columbus airport on the 50th anniversary of her flight, and it was also commemorated with an exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum.

“Her legacy of dedication, perseverance and belief in [herself] will forever inspire a community and a nation,” Elaine Roberts, president of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, said in a statement Wednesday.

Flocken said Mock didn’t want a funeral service. Instead, as she had requested, she will be cremated, with her ashes to be scattered from a plane flying over the Gulf of Mexico.

He retired in 1997, and moved to Scottsdale in 2008.

Stan is survived by Mary, his wife of 52 years; daughter, Holly; son, Hal; sister, Betty; brother, Brent (wife Jean); seven nieces and nephews and their children.

“We know his family, friends and former colleagues will celebrate his strength, warmth, kindness, compassion and gracious sense of humor,” says Mary. “We miss him.”

Stan’s son, Hal, remembers his dad warning him, “Never eat more than your head weighs,” while he instructed his daughter, Holly, “Never eat anything that looks like a tree,” a reference to his dislike for broccoli and cauliflower.

Stan was a huge sports fan, loyally following the Chicago Cubs, Bulls and Bears every season. He also enjoyed cooking and trying new restaurants. One of his favorite dishes was pulled pork. He and Mary bred and raised horses for 35 years, embracing the Colorado lifestyle they loved.

The family held a private service at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary.

She is survived by her beloved children, Katlin and Jordan Hartanovich, of Plainfield; her parents, Phil and Judy Matuszak, of Plainfield; sisters, Karin (Eduardo) Almeida, of California, and Jennifer (Tom) Chiavola, of Naperville; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Stan lived his early life in Joliet, IL, where he graduated from Joliet Township High School with the Class of 1953. He earned a bachelor’s in business from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1957, and then proudly served as a lieutenant (junior grade) in the United States Navy until 1961. He served on the USS Corry DDR-817.

After the Navy, Stan joined the Wadsworth Golf Construction Company, founded by his brother, Brent. Governor candidates’ views on Obama library evolve

CHICAGO – The candidates for Illinois governor have evolving views on who should pay for a potential presidential library in President Barack Obama’s home state, but both Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Republican Bruce Rauner say private funding should be a main source.

Quinn and Rauner – matched up in one of the nation’s tightest governor’s races – detailed their thoughts in candidate questionnaires from The Associated Press. Quinn said private funding should “make up the majority” of funding and Rauner, a wealthy venture capitalist, added that he’d personally contribute to it.

Ex-director to testify at Illinois hearing

SPRINGFIELD – The former head of an Illinois agency in charge of a troubled anti-violence program will testify before a legislative panel next week, his lawyer said.

Attorney John Theis said Barbara Shaw, who was director of the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority, will answer questions at the Oct. 8-9 Legislative Audit Commission hearings in Chicago.

“We’re prepared to respond to the questions that are asked of her,” Theis told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Neighborhood Recovery Initiative, which Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration launched in 2010, was the subject of a scathing state auditor general’s report for mismanagement and misspending. It has been scrutinized by federal prosecutors in Springfield, the Cook County state’s attorney and a legislative commission.

CHICAGO – Chicago Department of Aviation data show flights are still canceled at O’Hare International Airport after sabotage last week at a suburban air traffic control center.

The department said Wednesday morning that O’Hare had more than 170 canceled flights and airlines were reporting delays of about 35 minutes. Aviation officials said operations at Midway International Airport were normal.

The Federal Aviation Administration said O’Hare recorded about 80 percent of average Tuesday traffic on Tuesday and Midway was at about 85 percent.

A Naperville man is charged with setting a fire Friday at an Aurora control center and then trying to kill himself. The damage caused more than 2,000 flights to be canceled, disrupting travel nationwide. The FAA said crews are working to clean the facility and install new equipment.

Twenty-two suspects have been charged, with 14 of them arrested in Chicago, California, Pennsylvania and Iowa this week, the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago said in a statement Wednesday. The ring also allegedly extended to Oregon, Indiana and Ohio.

One of those charged is an alleged Chicago-area leader of the network, Victor Mata Madrigal, 37, of Lombard who went by the nickname “Obama.” He is accused of arranging bulk shipments of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico to Chicago, a hub for drug traffickers.

According to a criminal complaint, authorities seized nearly $4 million in cash raised

by Madrigal in his suburban Chicago home in April 2013. He was

arrested then and has been in jail since that seizure.

Criminal complaints include wiretap transcripts of the accused U.S. traffickers calling suppliers in Mexico.

Prosecutors’ statement about the arrests partially credits the Chicago Strike Force, which has operated since 2013 out of a single headquarters – where dozens of agents, police and prosecutors have worked side-by-side to help avoid the miscommunication and inter-agency rivalry that can foil investigations.

The defendants are charged with conspiracy or possession with intent to distribute narcotics in three criminal complaints, and some could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted. They were scheduled to begin making initial appearances in federal court in Chicago on Thursday.

Defense to challenge law in case of released minks

CHICAGO – A defense lawyer in a case of two animal rights activists accused of releasing 2,000 minks on an Illinois farm said he’ll challenge the constitutionality of the federal Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act under which they’re charged.

When lawyer Michael Deutsch told Judge Milton Shadur the statute’s name at a Wednesday hearing in Chicago, Shadur laughed and said, “Really?”

Deutsch said later Wednesday the statute is overly broad and that the use of “terrorism” in its title could prejudice jurors.

Secret Service chief quits amid security lapse reports

CALDWELL The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Secret Service Director Julia Pierson abruptly resigned Wednesday in the face of multiple revelations of security breaches, bumbling in her agency and rapidly eroding confidence that the president and his family were being kept safe.

President Barack Obama “concluded new leadership of that agency was required,” said spokesman Josh Earnest.

High-ranking lawmakers from both parties had urged her to step down after her poorly received testimony to Congress a day earlier – and revelation of yet another security problem: Obama had shared an elevator in Atlanta last month with an armed guard who was not authorized to be around him.

That appeared to be the last straw that crumbled trust in her leadership in the White House. Earnest said Obama and his staff did not learn about that breach until just before it was made public in news reports Tuesday.

“Today, Julia Pierson, the director of the United States Secret Service, offered her

resignation, and I accepted it,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement. He announced that Joseph Clancy, retired head of the agency’s Presidential Protective Division, would come out of retirement to lead the Secret Service temporarily.

Taking further steps to restore trust in the beleaguered agency, Johnson also outlined an independent inquiry into the agency’s operations.

That trust was shaken by a series of failures in the agency’s critical job of protecting the president. Those included a breach Sept. 19, when a knife-carrying man climbed over the White House fence on Pennsylvania Avenue and made it deep into the executive mansion before being stopped.

Republicans quickly served notice that Pierson’s resignation and the inquiry ordered by Johnson would not end their investigation.

“The Oversight Committee will continue to examine clear and serious agency failures at the Secret Service,” said the panel’s chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif. “Problems at the Secret Service predate Ms. Pierson’s tenure as director, and her resignation certainly does not resolve them.”

In an interview with Bloomberg News after her resignation was announced, Pierson said she recognized that “Congress has lost confidence in my ability to run the agency.”

She said she met Johnson Wednesday and “after that discussion I felt this was the noble thing to do.”

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a leader of the congressional inquiry, called her resignation “the right thing to do, it had to happen, but there are some systemic challenges that must be addressed.”

Some revelations came from whistleblowers who contacted Chaffetz, and he suggested more damaging stories may emerge. “Unfortunately, there are more out there and we’ll see how that goes,” he said.

After a congressional hearing Tuesday into the Sept. 19 breach and an earlier one, reports emerged of still another.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DONATIONS SHOULDN’T DETERMINE SIZE OF VOICE To the Editor: Citadel CEO Kenneth Griffin has now given a total of $4.58 million to the campaign of Bruce Rauner. That figure is more than 10 percent of the combined total raised by candidates Pat Quinn and Bill Brady in the 2010 gubernatorial contest. This fact is troubling, regardless of one’s opinion of Rauner or Quinn.

While it is an outsized example, no one can deny the increasing influence of mega-donors on political campaigns in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Citizen United and McCutcheon decisions.

As candidates from all parties spend more time courting mega donors, they spend less time courting ordinary citizens.

In a democracy, the size of your wallet should not determine the volume of your voice.

We need solutions on the state and federal level that decrease the power the big donors in our elections, and elevate the voice of small donors.

Holy radicals in a fallen world It’s 7:15 a.m. Tuesday and, as on most mornings, the Rev. Robert Barron, rector of the Mundelein Seminary, unassumingly takes an open seat in the audience. Barron is best and popularly known for the recent PBS series “Catholicism” and his Word on Fire ministry. But here he is on a serene campus outside of Chicago, gathered with his community for prayer.

After a brief greeting, the newly announced archbishop of Chicago, Blase Cupich, slips in alongside Barron.

“We are people not to worry, but to depend on the mercy of God,” Cupich began as he greeted the audience minutes later, expressing his happiness at being with them to celebrate morning Mass.

Cupich said this was one of the first things he wanted to do as the new archbishop: be with the seminarians under his care. In his homily, he urged them to embrace their roles as beacons of reconciliation and healing.

“You all are here because you have heard the word of God,” Cupich said. “Be taken by it and share it.”

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez Since the news of a new Chicago archbishop broke Sept. 20, the buzz has been about politics. Cupich, seen as a “moderate,” replaces Cardinal Francis George, seen as a “conservative.” But there were no politics here; people prayed in unison and shared in spiritual fellowship.

As in many of his columns, homilies and speeches, Cupich appeared to be something of a radical – he frequently pointed to Jesus Christ and the Gospels, who and which are exactly that.

When he met the press after his new post was announced, Cupich said Pope Francis had just appointed “a pastor, not a message” to Chicago. Rather than distract ourselves with who’s in, who’s out and what that might mean – as if we’re scoring a baseball game or presidential debate – we might consider that sometimes news events might be

an occasion for examining our consciences and renewing our most fundamental commitments, instead of engaging in partisan punditry.

With the constant bombardment that our senses experience daily and the business of our lives, we often miss the greater context of things. Barron tries to help with this, renewing our understanding of Christian culture. “Keep in mind that Christianity is not a philosophy, it’s not a program, it’s not a theory. Christianity is a relationship to a person, to ... Jesus Christ,” Barron says on a new DVD, “Priest, Prophet, King.”

If we are to be good stewards, we will consider not everything is ideology and profit, that among the causal idolatry of popular and political culture, we have lost sight of the spark we need, for it is the exercise of virtue that keeps us honest and free.

BOYS GOLF: SOUTHWEST PRAIRIE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

By DICK GOSS CHANNAHON – On a day when Heritage Bluffs Golf Course may have been the big winner, three champions evolved at Wednesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference boys golf tournament.

Minooka won with a 317 total, six strokes ahead of Plainfield North’s 323. The two were close enough in points during the dual-meet season that the winner was destined to be the overall conference champion, so the Indians captured that trophy.

Minooka junior Ryan Johnson shot a 4-over-par 76 to claim medalist honors and finish in a tie for fourth place in the season individual standings.

Plainfield North senior Taylor Hollingshaus entered Wednesday dueling Plainfield South’s Isaiah Pina for the overall individual championship. Hollingshaus tied for fourth with an 80 and Pina shot 82.

That gave Hollingshaus enough points to top Pina 28.525.5 in the MVP race.

“It wasn’t a good day in that I feel I let the team down,” said Hollingshaus, who shot

69 Friday at Wedgewood to win the Don Nichols Will County Invitational. “We really wanted to beat Minooka.

But I had a couple of stretches where I was 4-over-par over about four holes, and that’s why I shot 80.

“The big difference between this and last week at Wedgewood was I had no bogeys that day. I played very well there, and I got a couple breaks. Today, I didn’t get any breaks.”

Hollingshaus said Pina is

a good friend, “and I really wanted him to do well. But I heard he hurt his wrist a little, and that hurt his score.”

Johnson said he was expecting other scores to be better.

Plainfield North’s Greg Rash and Minooka’s Steve Andreano tied for second with 79s, and Minooka’s Kyle Sheppard joined Hollingshaus in a group of four at 80. Minooka’s other counting score came from Noah Lindmark and Sam Smolkovich, who both

shot 83.

Rash’s effort helped him finish third in the season standings, and Johnson earned a fourth-place tie.

“I played pretty well,” Johnson said. “I hit my tee shots well. I hadn’t been playing too well, but I’m getting it back together this week.”

Minooka coach Brian Petrovic noted that Johnson birdied the par-4 18th hole “hitting 4-iron, 8-iron within two feet. That’s one of the hardest holes on the course.

He played smart. He didn’t pull out his driver and try to rip it.”

As Johnson pointed out, Minooka is all about balance.

“We all shoot about the same,” he said.

However, as a team, Petrovic said work had to be done on mental toughness.

“It was a great day,” Petrovic said. “The boys played well. I’m proud of them. Last week after our invitational, we had a heart-to-heart. I was tough on them. They had to forget their scores and stay in their process. Guys who had a bad start held it together.”

Sheppard was 3-over through three holes and shot 80. Andreano was not on the eight-player conference tournament team until he shot 1-under in a recent qualifier, and he tied for second.

“That [79] was an amazing round for Steve,” Petrovic said.

Plainfield South, with Brian Ward’s 81 leading the way, finished third in team with 346. Plainfield Central was fourth at 347, with Matt Hardin shooting 83 and Jake Hawkings 84. Plainfield East finished sixth at 353, as Nathan Gentili shot 87. Romeoville ended at 436.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After falling one stroke shy of a sixth straight title in last year’s conference meet, Minooka’s girls golfers were determined to start a new streak this season.

And the Indians did just that after having four of the top nine placers in Wednesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference tournament at Inwood Golf Course.

Minooka defeated runner-up Plainfield North, 367377, to give it a 21-16 point advantage over the Tigers in the final standings, which included dual meet results.

Danielle Harris, a senior who was her team’s eighth scorer earlier this season, led the Indians with an 85, which tied her with Oswego East’s Leena Hwang for second place.

They were two strokes behind the champion, Plainfield North senior Carly Staser.

Other top scorers for Minooka were Alli Lee (91), Miranda Sharp (95), Andra Sharp (96), Emily Knaub (99) and Maddie Erickson (100).

“Obviously, one of our strengths this year has been our consistency,” Indians coach Joe Host said. “You never know who’s going to beat who. Danielle shot an 85 and has really turned it on in the

second half of the season and helped us at the right time.

“One thing that has helped us get out of regionals recently is that everybody is within a few strokes of each other. Our girls do a nice job of stepping up and helping each other.

We came close to keeping the streak going last year, and hopefully this starts a new one.”

Staser combined nines of 42 and 41 to capture the individual title. As a result, she won the most valuable player award by a 23.5-18 margin over Harris. Other leading Tigers scorers were Marissa Platt (89) and Kenzie Wolendowski (100).

“Being a senior, it’s really nice to finish strong in conference,” Staser said. “I just went out and had fun and was really relaxed starting from the first hole. I just played to play and didn’t worry about my score. I played with some really good girls, and we had a lot of fun. I wasn’t expecting to win, especially with all of the other good players in this conference. The girls on our team have really improved a lot this year.”

Plainfield East and Plainfield South wound up tying for third place in the overall standings. In the meet, the Bengals were led by Brigetta Bernholdt (99), while the Cou-

gars were paced by Amanda Granato (99) and Sara Labiak (100).

Finishing in third place in the overall individual standings was Plainfield Central’s Heather Bush, who led her team with a 96. Oswego East also got an 89 from Alayna Dieter.

Nine athletes received allSPC recognition, led by Staser, Harris and Bush. The rest of the honorees were (in order) Lee, Platt, Miranda Sharp, Bernholdt, Erickson and Andra Sharp.

Minooka also had the top placer in the junior-varsity meet, which was won by Abby Pena, who finished with a 44.

Providence, Lincoln-Way West on the class bubble for playoffs VIEWS Dick Goss The big thing with the high school football playoffs is to make sure you get there.

Teams piling up large numbers of playoff points (opponent victories) know they will qualify with a 5-4 record. Those whose opponents have been letting them down in terms of vic-

tories may need six wins to guarantee a spot.

However, there is another element to the playoffs that stirs interest at this stage of every season. When teams are headed for the postseason but they’re on the bubble in regard to which class they will be in, the intrigue grows.

In the Joliet area this season, teams on that bubble are Providence (5-0) and Lincoln-Way West (5-0). The IHSA’s playoff outlook for this week says the Celtics

AREA FOOTBALL RANKINGS LARGE SCHOOLS 1. Providence (5-0): There’s lots of discussion

about whether the Celtics are the best team in the state regardless of class. Another telling clash is on tap Saturday afternoon at Loyola.

2. Bolingbrook (4-1): The Raiders have to be careful against Lockport, which came close to shocking Lincoln-Way East a couple weeks ago.

3. Joliet Catholic (4-1): The Hilltoppers continue to get good defensive play, and their vaunted running game seems to have rounded into form.

This week’s foe, Marian Catholic, has not shown much yet.

4. Lincoln-Way East (4-1): The Griffins proved they again are a force in the SouthWest Suburban Blue with their 43-40 win over Homewood-Flossmoor, a game in which they posted well over 600 yards of offense.

5. Lincoln-Way West (5-0): The Warriors continue to win while improving, which is the ideal combination. A trip to Bradley on Friday night will be a difficult assignment.

6. Lincoln-Way Central (4-1): Quarterback Connor Campbell has hit 50.6 percent of his passes and thrown for six touchdowns. He needs to be productive in Friday’s visit to unbeaten Lincoln-Way North.

7. Lemont (5-0): Lemont’s schedule generally is not the strongest; but except for hitting a detour last season, the Indians continue to blow away one opponent after another.

8. Plainfield East (4-1): The Bengals suffered their first loss, 27-26, in overtime to Plainfield North, and now have another tough one with visiting Minooka.

9. Plainfield North (3-2): The Tigers jumped into ratings after knocking off previously unbeaten Plainfield East 27-26 in overtime. Quintin Hoosman See RANKINGS page 22

would be in Class 7A and the Warriors in 5A if the playoffs were to begin now.

However, it is possible either or both will wind up in 6A, where they would join Lemont. The current enrollment cutoff for 5A at this point is 1,285.35, and West’s enrollment is 1,285.

Class 7A currently begins at 1,812, and Providence – with 1.65 multiplier applied – is at 1,824.90.

It appears more likely West will inch up into 6A than it does Providence

will drop into 6A, but either remains a possibility. It all depends on how many large schools and how many small schools statewide that are on that other bubble – whether they will qualify at all – stay in the chase and how many drop out.

My best guess is the Warriors will play in 6A and the Celtics in 7A. Regardless, what we do know is if they both remain unbeaten, they will be among the highest

Newton may have almost put Clausen out of the game, but he speaks well of him now. “Jimmy was a great teammate,” he said.

The focus this Sunday will be two teams struggling at 2-2.

Slauson: Ready to return from injury

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – If it’s up to him, the Bears’ starting left guard will be back Sunday in Carolina – and he’s not the only one who could return to action.

Matt Slauson was back at practice Wednesday, in a limited basis, along with Roberto Garza, Jeremiah Ratliff, Jared Allen and Sherrick McManis. Slauson and Garza haven’t played since high-ankle sprains in Week 1; McManis injured his quad in Week 2; and Ratliff sustained a concussion also in Week 2.

“I don’t know. In my mind, I’m playing, but I can’t play until they say OK, so I’m just waiting on that,” Slauson said.

Last year’s top-rated Bears offensive lineman according to Pro Football Focus, Slauson said he began feeling better late last week and has had “dramatic improvements in strength and mobility and the way I move on the field.

“I’m just waiting for the nod.”

Slauson said he definitely has benefited from getting the mental reps, because he is not used to this situation. Slauson had not missed a game since 2009.

“It’s been great. Being able to step back and watch the big picture of things instead of just watching the little box of the left side,” he said.

“Now, watching how the line and the backs have to move together, it’s actually taught me a couple things. Watching [Michael] Ola has been great because it’s been giving me reminders, too, for when I come back.”

Slauson joked that life on the sideline was “less lonely” with Garza, who got a vote of confidence Wednesday from coach Marc Trestman. Despite impressive play from Brian de la Puente, Trestman said Garza will return as the starter when he’s healthy.

Healthy Marshall: Brandon Marshall was a full participant in practice for the first time since he hurt his ankle against Buffalo.

“Brandon got through practice, did everything. That’s a good sign,” Trestman said.

A first for Ratliff: In his 10 NFL seasons, Jeremiah Ratliff never got a concussion, so going through the protocol was a first for him.

Like Slauson, Ratliff has taken advantage of what he could do while not playing, helping teammates out on the practice field and in the meeting room.

“It does [help], to stay in tune with what’s going on as well as things I can improve on in my own game,” he said.

“It’s something I enjoy doing.

It’s being a part of the team.

If you’re not out there and the next man’s up, you have to stay a part of it.”

For two teams that have seen each other just three times in the past five years and just five times over the past 11 seasons, there is a familiarity about the Bears and the Panthers that is hard to escape.

Most of it is rooted in Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, who spent his entire career as a player in a Bears uniform, then spent three years as my broadcast partner on Bears pre- and postgame shows after his retirement before he got into coaching. Then he worked for the Bears for free to get started as a coach.

There is more. Carolina’s most consistent offensive threat, Greg Olsen, was a first-round pick of the Bears in 2007 and played four years in Chicago before spending the last four seasons with the Panthers.

Jimmy Clausen may just be the backup quarterback in Chicago, but he was drafted to be the future in Carolina in the second round of the 2010 draft, thrown to the wolves far too soon as a rookie, then had to deal with the shortest future in history when Cam Newton became the Panthers “new future” in 2011.

In Rivera’s last year as a Bear, he was the coordinator of one of the best defenses in

the league and went to the Super Bowl. A few weeks later, after Lovie Smith received a contract extension, he fired Rivera, leaving people around the league scratching their heads.

Roberto Garza, Robbie Gould, Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman are the only Bears remaining from that Super Bowl team.

Briggs spoke Wednesday about what he feels made Rivera such a great coach.

“Ron was great. I loved playing for Ron,” Briggs said.

“You could tell he was a guy who played the game. The way that he explained certain plays to me made me want to make a play. He would tell me on a specific play, ‘Look, this is one of the hardest things that I’m asking you to do. It’s almost impossible, but if you can do it, we shut this whole play down.’

“That was enough for me to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to find a way to do it, to help the team.’”

Briggs also speaks fondly of Olsen and still enjoys ribbing him as he would a teammate.

“Greg is one of their top targets,” Briggs said. “Greg was one of the top targets when he was here, and he’s one of the top targets there.

He’s fast. Greg’s not the best blocker, I can tell you that right now (Lance smiles). I think everybody in the world knows that (Lance laughs).

LEMONT – Lemont High School staff member Bob Maciulis, formerly the longtime outdoors columnist for The Herald-News, is one of 18 honorees who comprise the 2015 induction class for the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame.

Maciulis, who serves as a para-educator within Lemont’s academy program, is one of the Midwest’s preeminent voices in the outdoor recreational community and is being honored for Bob Maciulis his contribution, dedication and service to the fresh water sport fishing industry.

Maciulis has served several roles at Lemont High School since 2008, but it is his 40-year career as an outdoors journalist that earned him his Hall of Fame nod.

Since 1976, Maciulis has written outdoors columns for The Herald-News, Southtown Star and various daily newspapers in the metropolitan area.

The Illinois Editor of Midwest Outdoors from 1975 to 1979, his articles have been published in Gray’s Sporting Journal, Federation of Fly Fishers, Illinois Game

Several other area schools can lock up playoff berths this weekend. Wilmington (5-0) probably needs that sixth victory to make sure. Lemont (5-0) definitely needs a sixth win.

Joliet Catholic, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East – all 4-1 – are in as soon as they notch win No. 5 because their playoff points are solid.

Other area teams that are 4-1 probably will need to get to six victories to avoid having to sweat it out on pairings night. That group includes Bolingbrook, Plainfield East, Coal City and Seneca.

Of the 3-2 teams in the area, Joliet West definitely will be in with five victories, and Minooka and Plainfield North would have a good shot. But first things first. They must go

at least 2-2 from here on.

Two area teams that are 2-3 – Morris and Plainfield South – are strong in playoff points, but they must win three of their last four, and that is no easy task.

This may sound incredible, but if enough of our 3-2 and 2-3 teams meet the challenge the final four weeks of the regular season, our area could have between 14 and 16 playoff qualifiers. What a bonanza that would be, even by our standards.

The Rev. Jeff Smialek, JCA’s campus minister, said the school has both a Carmelite and Franciscan tradition (JCA blended two schools, the former Catholic High School and St. Francis Academy).

Blessing pets when students, parents and alumni are together near the feast of St. Francis of Assisi seemed to be a natural thing to do.

“We know St. Francis had great love and care for the animals,” Smialek said. “It’s a way to honor our heritage and spirituality.”

Pet blessings also remind people that God calls them to be good stewards of creation, not just animal life but the environment, too.

“We need to use our resources of the natural world in a wise manner,” Smialek said, “and not squander them.”

The Rev. Peter Jankowski, pastor at St. Patrick’s Church in Joliet, will conduct a pet blessing Saturday at Joliet Township Animal Control in conjunction with its microchipping clinic. A second blessing will be at his church the following day.

Like similar events, Jankowski sees mostly dogs and cats, but owners also have brought snakes and salamanders. Rusty Joe Troublemaker, Jankowski’s basset hound, will be there, too, he said.

“It’s great having dogs and cats in one place,” Jankowski said, “making a joyful noise.”

In 2011, 67,700 toddlers were seen for accidental medication exposure.

Of these, 12,390 required hospitalization. Children 13 to 24 months of age accounted for 68 percent of these visits. In ER visits where information was obtained, 38 percent involved grandparents’ medications, 31 percent the mother’s medications, 12 percent a sibling’s, 8 percent the father’s and 5 percent an aunt’s or uncle’s medication.

Family members MUST take precautions to keep their meds out of children’s hands. I keep mine under lock and key with the key in my possession whenever I visit my grandchildren.

While I agree with you that children should be taught boundaries and to respect the possessions of others, I believe we have a responsibility to provide a safe environment, especially when we are visiting or when children are visiting us. Dear Abby: You missed the chance to communicate a life-or-death message to your readers when you answered a letter from an “Ohio Grandma” (July 14).

Your reply understated the importance of storing medications properly and safely. What if the grandmother had placed a loaded GUN on the desk instead of medications? Both can produce just as deadly a result.

And why didn’t those meds have safety lids?

Putting them in a suitcase is not enough. They should be stored out of reach, preferably secured with a safety lock. Or better yet, the parents should be told you have dangerous substances with you – and ASKED where you can store them. – MOM OF A TODDLER IN NEW JERSEY Dear Mom: I was scolded for not placing more emphasis on the safety issue.

However, the question I was asked was, “Are we obligated to help with more of the medical expenses (for the ER visit) because we have already helped (contributed several hundred dollars) and I don’t think it’s our job to teach our grandchild boundaries?” So that was the issue on which I focused. Read on: Dear Abby: You dropped the ball. No 3-year-old will respect a closed door all of the time. Grandma and Grandpa are responsible for the safe-keeping of their meds while in the child’s and even the grandparents’ home. Bottles that rattle and pretty colors in a bottle that look like candy will attract any little kid. Grandma and Grandpa should be happy they aren’t helping to pay for a funeral instead of an ER visit. Here are the “rules”: 1. All medications should be in kid-proof containers.

2. All medications and OTC drugs should be kept out of a curious child’s climbing area.

3. Poison Control numbers should be posted on the fridge.

4. Use the original container (NOT one of those daily dosage containers) and

Section 6: This Ordinance, to the extent of its validity, supersedes any prior District ordinance inconsistencies related to the matters contained herein.
