The old Jefferson Street stone bridge was constructed

by Henry and Haley in 1871, and connected Jefferson Street on the east side of town with Exchange Street on the west.

The stone arch bridge spanned the Des Plaines River for nearly 30 years until it was destroyed by dynamite in 1900.

The arch stone bridge soon was replaced by a steel-framed bridge, which was planned under the supervision of the Sanitary District of Chicago and constructed by J. G. Wagner & Company, beginning in 1899.

Under an agreement with the Sanitary District, both the Cass Street and Jefferson Street bridges were constructed at the same time.

In an effort to interrupt public travel as little as possible, the ordinance provided that the Jefferson Street Bridge would not be razed until the new Cass Street Bridge was completed and ready for public travel.

It also was agreed a temporary bridge near Jefferson Street would be erected during the construction phase. Once completed, the new steel framed bridge would serve the needs of the city until it was replaced in 1932.

Just north of the bridge, and out of view to the right, is the Illinois and Michigan Canal and locktender’s house. The I&M Canal ran through Joliet on the west side of the Des Plaines River.

The section of the new Sanitary and Ship Canal from Chicago to Joliet was completed by 1902. Improvements to the Illinois and Des Plaines rivers continued into the early decades of the 20th century, and the newly completed Illinois Waterway was opened in 1933.

bridge was constructed by the Mississippi Valley Structural Steel Company of Chicago at a cost of nearly $160,000.

The span of the Jefferson Street Bridge is approximately 220 feet across and contains a steel-grate deck and a 13-foot wide sidewalk on each side of the bridge. The bridge has reinforced concrete abutments and piers and a one-story bridge tender’s house at the southeast pier. The key feature of the rolling lift bascule bridge is the use of a roller and track upon which the bridge rolls to open rather than rotating around an axel as a trunnion bascule bridge does.

Waterway, the Jefferson Street Bridge is one of several built between 1932 and 1935 in Joliet. From McDonough Street on the south to Ruby Street on the north, Joliet has six lift bridges that span across the Des Plaines River. The modern Scherzer Rolling Lift bridges are found at McDonough, Jefferson, Cass, and Jackson Streets. The Ruby Street Bridge is a Bascule Trunnion style bridge. The Joliet Railroad Bridge is a vertical lift (Truss) bridge.

Outside of Chicago, Joliet has the largest number of operable lift bridges in the Midwest. The now photograph shows a view of the Jefferson Street Bridge today.

Channahon’s Dollinger Family Farm hosts Civil War Days

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – First, for anyone who couldn’t stay until the end of the Civil War re-enactment Saturday at Dollinger Family Farm, the North won.

But after four years of fighting, the Union was winning most battles because the Confederate armies were isolated, outnumbered and, most importantly, starving, Jerry Kowalski told the crowd as troops began taking position.

On the third Saturday in October, an Illinois pumpkin farm became a Virginia creek on April 6, 1865. And thousands of onlookers armed with cellphones watched hundreds of re-enactors armed with rifles and cannons portray the Battle of Sailor’s Creek.

Kowalski, who played Union Gen. George Thomas, used a public address system to provide commentary on the various charges and retreats the audience could watch all around them.

This year marked the 20th year the Dollinger family has hosted Civil War Days.

“We’re proponents of education and history, but it’s one thing to read about something in the classroom and another to see it happening,” Noreen Dollinger said.

The first year featured a battle with 10 actors on each side. Dollinger estimated she had 650 actors to feed Saturday night.

“It’s a period [authentic] meal ... pork chops, beans. I’d like to think it’s a better quality than they had by the end of the Civil War,” she said. “And there’s cookies.”

The Dollingers also provide firewood and straw for the campsites, food for the horses and powder for the battle.

“Col.” Steven Fratt is a history professor at Trinity International University. Before the shooting started, he arranged a summit with his senior officers and Confederate counterpart to choreograph the action.

Early re-enactments would have a brief infantry battle, followed by the cavalry and then artillery and take about 15 minutes, Fratt said. But now, the actors, some of whom stage small battles and living history presentations every weekend, are on different parts of the

field simultaneously.

“We try to play out specific battles. It’s [not only] historically accurate, it’s more fun,” Fratt said. “The more troops we have, the more we can do.”

The ideal staged conflict lasts about 45 minutes. But things can “bog down” quickly

if a few units don’t die where they’re expected to, so Fratt and his Confederate counterpart keep walkie-talkies under their jackets in case they need to improvise things across the field of battle.

Although some ranks announced their intent to die in battle, buglers are somewhat guaranteed to survive to the end of the re-enactment in order to signal the final push to everyone in combat.

D-86 looks at impact of housing relocation Families may move elsewhere or go to another school in the Joliet district

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 officials have measured the potential impact of housing developments in the city on student enrollment.

In a previous District 86 board meeting, Board of School Inspectors member Quinn Adamowski had questions about the impact of developments such as the demolition of Des Plaines Gardens homes or city redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace apartments on student enrollment and building capacity.

District officials showed board inspectors what that impact might be at the Wednesday’s facilities committee meeting. Based on student enrollment from the 2014-15 school year, potentially 108 students living the Des Plaines Gardens area could be displaced.

Potentially 241 and 119 students living in the Fairview Homes and Evergreen Terrace apartment areas, respectively, could be displaced as well if developments move forward in those two com-

plexes.

“We have no way of knowing where these kids may end up,” said E. Wesley Russell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they will all leave Will County or District 86 schools.

The students could end up at other schools within the district, he said.

“It would have an impact over time. I don’t think they would all leave the district because there are places they can go within our boundaries,” Russell said.

Families in Des Plaines Gardens homes who are moving – after Housing Authority of Joliet decision to redevelop the properties – are receiving Section 8 vouchers. The vouchers allow them to move wherever it is accepted as long as they can afford the rent.

Demolition for the Des Plaines Gardens Homes is slated to begin by March.

Joliet housing officials also are seeking to demolish Fairview Homes and redevelop another site from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Calls to HAJ Chief Executive Officer Michael Simelton on Friday were not immediately returned.

With Evergreen Terrace, city officials paid $15 million after a long legal battle for ownership of the property so they can redevelop it but they said it will be a couple of months before they take it over. The current owners are appealing the federal court decision to give Joliet acquisition of Evergreen Terrace.

The information Russell showed to board inspectors on the housing redevelopment impact showed the 108 students in the Des Plaines Gardens area attend Keith Elementary and Washington Junior High.

Students living in the Fairview Homes area attend 15 schools in the district, including Marshall Elementary and Gompers Junior High. Students in the Evergreen Terrace area attend nine schools.

Russell said the information was something for board inspectors to consider.

“I think it’s something we have to have in the back of our minds as we move forward,” he said.

Continued from page 3 checking with the enlisted men to find who’d parked a black Ford Ranger and camping trailer next to a battery of Confederate cannons that were going to be fired and charged upon.

“There’s always complications, but that’s never happened before,” Kowalski said.

After several announcements from the far side of the field, the vehicle finally was moved just before the fighting began, by a man wearing Confederate gray trousers.

Before rifle shots from hidden vantage points, rebel yells and cannon volleys that pro-

duced loud noises and perfect smoke rings passed through the farm, both sides gave their hostess a “Pass and Review” procession in appreciation.

“I have definitely learned more about the Civil War from doing this,” she said. “We meet to work on it year-round.”

The battle was followed by a graphic demonstration of Civil War medical treatment and a recitation of the Gettysburg Address by an Abraham Lincoln impersonator. A second battle took place Sunday.

Although not quite as important as Lee’s surrender to Grant, both sides were eager to negotiate whose tent would host their enemies for whiskey and cigars Saturday night once the guns fell silent.

Braves mania While everyone is in the midst of Cubs mania, local youth football players from the Chanooka Braves are in the playoff season and hoping to make it to the conference’s Superbowl on Nov. 1.

Six of the eight Braves’ football teams made it to the playoffs this year, but as of Oct. 11, only the Varsity Orange team was still in.

Ever since the Chanooka Braves built their own football field at Three Rivers School in Channahon I’ve been listening to the cheers of the fans and the announcer’s voice from my backyard on Sunday mornings as I sip my coffee on the patio.

Over the years the Braves’ organization has grown, so much so that it now has two teams on each level.

What strikes me is the amount of enthusiasm and support the families, including those teams that travel to the Channahon field, provide for all these young kids.

In the River Valley Youth Football League, which the Chanooka Braves joined this season, there are more than 20 teams. Their former league had only eight, Braves’ President Chuck White said.

As I drove by the field one morning in September, I noticed several football parents creating chain-link fence art by putting the Braves’ logo on the fence with what they call Put-in-Cups.

It seems like a daunting task to create the American Indian head along with the team’s name. Where does one start?

Plainfield library plans progress, trustees will meet Wednesday

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plans to rebuild the Plainfield Public Library into a new, larger facility are progressing with the introduction of site plans and discussion on a referendum to fund the building.

“We’re in crunch time,” library board President Carl F. Gilmore said. “We’ve got to make our decision about what we’re going to put on the ballot by December.”

Trustees must vote on an ordinance to place either one or two questions related to the building and bond measures to make the state-mandated deadline for the Spring 2016 election.

Library staff and patrons have for years been clamoring for space. A referendum in 2009 for library expansion failed.

According to documents from architectural firm Nagle Hartray, the exterior of the 70,000- to 75,000-squarefoot library would consist of brick and glass elevations.

The total footprint of the south-facing site was increased to make room for more uses on the first floor.

Minooka high school math teacher was a life force to all

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Kelly Brozovich of Minooka will never forget the day an ambulance took her best friend Shawn Capodice from the Capodice’s Minooka home to the Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Sitting up front was Shawn’s husband, Brian Capodice, who kept turning around to check on Shawn, Kelly said. Finally Shawn blurted out, “Will someone tell him I’m fine?”

“That got everyone laughing,” Kelly said.

But Shawn always told the funniest one-liners, Kelly said. Her tagline was, “I’m

the dude.” In some respects, Shawn wasn’t far off.

“She was so strong,” Kelly said.

When Shawn died Sept. 21 at the age of 48 from a rare cancer, her family and friends lost someone dear, but Minooka Community High School lost a dedicated math teacher who had given 21 years of herself to the school and had served as the department’s instructional leader.

Yet, it wasn’t just the students that learned from Shawn.

Laura Grozik, a math teacher at the school, called Shawn a “force of positive energy, always smiling, always happy.”

When Shawn became sick, Laura said the teachers sold T-shirts that read “Caps Crew.” Earlier this month, the school’s varsity football team along with John and Joanne Carnagio, friends of the family and owners of the Channahon McDonald’s, also hosted a fundraiser at the restaurant.

Establishing a scholarship in Shawn’s name with those funds is being discussed, Brian said. He feels Shawn would support anything to further a student’s education.

Brian, who sent roses to Shawn every first day of school,

said Shawn constantly devised ways to make math come alive for her students.

“The kids always said math was fun,” Brian said, “because they could relate to it in the real world.”

In 2002, Shawn, who told Brian he was her soul mate and best friend early in their relationship, began periodically developing tumors that were removed and declared benign. In 2013, Shawn and Brian learned the truth.

Those tumors were actually angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, a rare soft tissue tumor.

were aggressive and that she had six months to live. Brian said he prayed for a miracle every single day. For a time, they received one.

During Shawn’s grueling battle, she had episodes of wellness. So she and Brian traveled around the United States and to Mexico. They even snorkeled together, holding hands underwater.

Brian said he never wanted to be apart from this beautiful, intelligent, devoted and loving woman and shared an incident that proved it.

He was 32 when he worked

as the regional manager of a company that required him to spend weekends in Michigan.

He told his employer if this separation from his family continued, he would quit. And he did.

OBITUARIES CHARLES H. BLACKWELL Charles H. Blackwell, age 77, graduated to his eternal home on September 24th, 2015, while at the Kansas City Hospice House, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Barbara; two brothers, Parker and David; and his infant granddaughter, Joy Abigail, precious daughter of David and Molly Blackwell.

He is survived by Ruth, his loving wife of 38 years and his sister, Patricia Barton of Alexandria, VA; his children, Karen Mysel of Hershey PA; Stephen and his wife, Lori of McKinney TX; David and his wife, Molly, and Sarah Mayers and her husband, James both of Kansas City MO; and his grandchildren, Dane, Cole, Kyle, Bella, Nicolas, Samuel, William, Norah, Sophie, Emma and Abi. Chuck was born in Takoma Park, MD. He attended Randolph Macon Military Academy, Bob Jones High School, University of Maryland, Moody Bible Institute, Northern Illinois University and Judson Baptist College where he acquired his BA and two Master’s degrees.

Chuck taught English, American History and coached a variety of sports in the Joliet Township School District High School. During this time he also served in youth ministries, was a chaplain at Silver Cross Hospital, and pastored at churches including Calvary Baptist Church and Homewood Full Gospel.

He founded the Calvary Chapel Ministries and Jesus Give Away Food and Clothing Pantry where he served for 30 years.

Chuck, affectionately known by his friends and family as Chuckles, Daddy-O, and Mr. B, was a champion of the poor, down and out, broken and “shipwrecked.” He saw the redemptive plan of God for every human being and always placed others above himself. He never grew tired of doing good and welcomed the opportunity to lend a helping hand, especially when no one was watching. He will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him. He once said he would like to be remembered as one who tried to love the unlovely.

A memorial service is being held on October 24th at the Trinity Christian School 901 Shorewood Drive, Shorewood, IL with the ser-

vice to start at 11:00 a.m. followed by an old – fashioned Calvary potluck lunch and fellowship.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Chapel Ministries to be used for the education of Chuck’s grandchildren.

Born July 15, 1925, in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of Francis X. and Margaret (Sullivan) Denneau. He served with the United States Navy during World War II, and later graduated from DePaul University. He enjoyed a lifelong career in accounting, retiring from Szabo Food Service.

Francis was a member of the American Legion Post #1080 where he was recognized for 70 years of membership in March, 2015. He was also a member of St. Mary Immaculate Parish where he will be remembered as a faithful usher.

He also loved to golf, play cards, and vacation in Wisconsin and Florida.

Survived by his daughters, Joanne (John) Weigt of Batavia, Diane (David) Maxfield of Prior Lake, MN, and Susan Denneau of Darien; three grandsons, Justin (Amelia) Weigt, Jordan (fiancee Jenna) Weigt, and Michael Maxfield; one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Weigt; two step-children, Dianne (Raymond) Kinnary and Ron (Pam) Lyman; two nephews, Tom and Jim Lusciatti; a brother-in-law, Jay Fiday; and many cousins, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Marilyn (Brookman) Denneau (1993); his second wife of 20 years, Lillian (nee Fiday) Denneau (2015); and his parents.

Roy retired from Mobil Oil in 1995, following 25 years of employment. He also built and remodeled many homes in the area. He was a detailed craftsman that was proud of his work. Roy was implanted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) that basically supported his heart. He was part of a study that is going to drive the field of heart failure forward. The device gave him a quality of life and additional time with his family that he might not have had.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Carol Sammons, whom he married in 1960 in Taylor Center, MI; four daughters, Janice (Mike) Foote of Custer Park, IL, Elizabeth (Dave) Ball of Elwood, IL, Suzanne Wager of Wilmington, and Amy (Jim) Williams of Wesley Chapel, FL; one son, Roy (Jolynn) Sammons, Jr. of Coal City, IL; eight grandchildren, Joshua (Sara) Foote, Tyler Foote, Jacqueline Daniels, Jacob Daniels, Dylan Wager, Nick Lombardi, Jimmy Williams, and Justin Williams; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Rita (Dan) Miller of Byers, CO and Nancy (Fred) Roberts of Hesperia, MI; and nieces and nephews.

SISTER MARY CONRAD STARESINCIC Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Sister Mary Conrad Staresincic was a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King (Lemont Franciscans) for 70 years. Sister served as an educator, administrator, and community leader.

Most recently she ministered to the residents of Alvernia Manor in Lemont.

6-year-old boy fatally shoots 3-year-old brother in Chicago

CHICAGO – A 6-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his 3-year-old brother while playing “cops and robbers” with a gun their father told investigators he had obtained illegally from a gang member, Chicago police said Sunday.

Police said the two boys were playing Saturday evening when the older boy reached on top of the refrigerator and grabbed the loaded handgun and then accidentally shot 3-year-old Eian Santiago in the face. The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he died later that night.

Police subsequently arrested the boys’ father, 25-year-old Michael Santiago, on a felony child endangerment charge.

During a court hearing on Sunday, Assistant state’s Attorney Joseph DiBella said that Santiago bought the gun off the street, kept it “wrapped in pajama pants on top of the refrigerator” and even showed the boy where the gun was.

Judge James Brown set Santiago’s bail at $75,000. Santiago was represented by the county’s public defender’s office.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the case tragically illustrates a point he has been making for years about how a major cause of much of Chicago’s violent crime is the flood of illegal guns into the city.

FOX LAKE – The police department in Fox Lake plans to continue a youth program that was led by an officer whose recent shooting death sparked a large manhunt.

EIU faculty push for provost no-confidence vote

CHARLESTON – Over 100 faculty members at Eastern Illinois University have signed a petition calling for a no-confidence vote for the provost and vice president of academic affairs.

The co-author of the petition is physics professor James Conwell.

He says there are concerns about transparency and decisions under Blair Lord, including centralizing employment within departments.

The Decatur Herald & Review reported there’ll be a faculty senate no-confidence referendum scheduled for several days in

November’s first week.

If it passes with a simple majority, the results will be presented to EIU President David Glassman. He says any formal action affecting the provost’s position is at his discretion.

Pekin woman stole $48,000 from grandmother

PEKIN – A central Illinois woman will have to serve a year of weekends in jail for stealing $48,000 from her grandmother.

The sentence will allow 36-yearold Enchandia Parod of Pekin enough time to work so she can repay the money.

She also was sentenced Friday to four years of probation and was barred from receiving any inheritance that her 81-year-old grandmother might still leave.

Parod was given access to her

grandmother’s bank accounts after offering to help in her care.

Prosecutors say Parod wrote checks from the woman’s accounts to herself and her husband and drained money from a home equity account. She pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft.

About 70 bison to be transferred to preserves

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. – Bison from Wind Cave National Park are scheduled to be transferred to preserves in South Dakota and other states to help form new or boost existing herds.

The National Park Service says about 70 bison are part of this year’s relocation effort. The bison transferred out of state are going to Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Illinois.

Attention is focused on Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the GOP’s 2012 vice presidential nominee, who is under pressure from party leaders to run for House speaker – a job he repeatedly has made clear he does not want.

Even if Ryan yields to his colleagues’ pleas, conservatives are increasingly serving notice that the 45-year-old House Ways and Means Committee chairman will have to audition for the job just like anyone else, despite the widespread support he has.

That suggests that the same hard-liners who pushed current Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to announce his resignation and scared off his heir apparent, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., could throw up obstacles to Ryan, too.

It also leaves any resolution unclear for a party that seems nearly irreparably divided. More than a half-dozen lawmakers are considering running for speaker if Ryan does not, even as hard-liners warn Boehner risks more rebellions if he stays on past his planned departure date of Oct. 29.

“John is a lame duck.

There was a reason John announced his resignation,” said Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, a leader of the House Freedom Caucus.

“I think Paul does have the credibility across the conference to be able to unite us, but to say he’s the only one I think is hyperbole.”

gress confronts the need to raise the federal borrowing limit by early November or risk a market-shattering default, and delicate talks are underway to come up with a budget deal to avoid a government shutdown in two months. The task of raising the debt limit is falling to Boehner. But he will have to tread carefully, given GOP objections to an increase without concessions from President Barack Obama – something the White House is ruling out.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, one of the Republican rebels, said he would consider forcing a vote to push Boehner out of the speaker’s chair if Boehner engages in “nefarious activity.” Massie defined that as “running the tables” on legislation not supported by a majority of Republicans. Boehner has suggested he wants to “clean the barn” before leaving Congress so his successor does not have a lot of unfinished business.

But Massie said he doesn’t draw a “red line” at the debt limit.

The unrest in Congress coincides with a chaotic GOP presidential primary dominated by candidates far afield from the political establishment, as Republican voters push for action, change and

confrontation with Obama.

It may be difficult for any House speaker to satisfy those demands, with Obama still in the White House and minority Democrats in the Senate using that chamber’s rules to bottle-up legislation passed by the majority-rule House.

The job of speaker “would more or less fall in the category of thankless task, because people are not going to be in agreement with anything that a speaker does,” said Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, one of the lawmakers who says she is being encouraged to consider the job.

For Ryan, who may harbor presidential ambitions, the job is unlikely to be the best stepping-stone. Only four speakers or former speakers captured their parties’ presidential nominations, and just one won the White House — former Speaker James Polk in 1844.

Already Ryan is under attack from some conservatives inside and outside Congress for his support of comprehensive immigration legislation.

Rep. Steve King of Iowa, Congress’ leading immigration hard-liner, said Ryan would be unlikely to win support from House conservatives opposed to any “pro-amnesty” politician.

Power, pitching, plus some dazzling defense are falling into place for New York. The Mets breezed past the Cubs, 4-1, Sunday night for a 2-0 lead in a surprisingly one-sided NL Championship Series.

Jake Arrieta, baseball’s most dominant pitcher since the All-Star break, had not even settled in when Murphy homered for the fourth straight game, a two-run drive just inside the rightfield pole in a three-run first inning.

Given the quick lead on a chilly night, Syndergaard kept the bats of the Cubs’ young sluggers on ice with shutout ball into the sixth inning.

Curtis Granderson robbed Chris Coghlan of a likely home run with a leaping grab at the center-field wall, swiped a pair of bases and scored two runs for the Mets.

After beating Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Jon Lester and Arrieta, the Mets are two wins from reaching their first World Series since 2000.

New York starts NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom when the series resumes Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs go with Kyle Hendricks, part of the less-than-imposing back end of its rotation. If the long-downtrodden Cubs are to reach the World Series for the first time since 1945, they must first force the best-of-seven NLCS back to Citi Field next weekend.

After homering off Kershaw, Greinke and Lester, Murphy added his fifth home run of the postseason, giving him eight RBIs in seven games.

Up next Cubs: Hendricks (8-7) did not get a decision in the Division Series against St. Louis, allowing three runs and four hits in 4 2-3 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

He was replaced by Alex Wood with a 6-2 lead after giving up consecutive homers.

Mets: DeGrom (14-8) got the wins in Games 1 and 5 against the Dodgers, giving up two runs in 13 innings. He is 0-2 in three career starts against the Cubs. came out throwing 99 mph darts until the sixth, when Dexter Fowler singled and scored on Kris Byrant’s two-out double off the left-field wall.

Jon Niese came in and struck out Anthony Rizzo, squelching the Cubs’ comeback hopes.

Syndergaard allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one. Jeurys Familia’s fourth postseason save finished a five-pitcher five-hitter and sent the Cubs to consecutive losses for the first time since they dropped three in a row from Sept. 23-26.

It was 45 degrees at game time with an 18 mph northwest wind – some players wore balaclavas that covered their faces, including Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who played on his 30th birthday.

The Cubs skipped batting practice because of the weather, but Arrieta took the mound in short sleeves. He had not given up a first-inning run in 25 consecutive starts since May 29.

With his velocity down slightly, he found himself trailing after nine pitches and down 3-0 after 13.

Granderson singled through the shift into right field for his ninth hit in 22 postseason at-bats. David Wright, in a 1-for-19 playoff slide, drove a fastball on a hop off the center-field wall with Granderson running on the pitch.

Murphy hit an 0-1 pitch about 10 feet to the foul side of the right-field pole, then reached down for a shin-high curveball and with a one-handed swing sent it just inside the pole. Murphy raised his right fist in triumph while rounding first base and took a curtain call after a prolonged ovation.

Granderson made his dashing defensive play in the second, leaping to get his glove to the top of the 8-foot wall just to the right of straightaway center.

Granderson’s steals then helped the Mets make it 4-0 in the third.

He walked leading off and stole second as Wright struck out. Granderson swiped third, too, and came home when Yoenis Cespedes grounded to the shortstop hole for an infield single.

Jeffery, who had been out since Week 1 with a hamstring injury, caught eight passes for 147 yards and a TD. The Bears went three-and-

out on each of its two overtime possessions. Then Stafford found Johnson for a 57-yard pass when Bears rookie Harold Jones Quartey was left trying to cover the star receiver with no help from anyone else in the secondary.

That play set up the winning kick by Prater.

“Once I’m running downfield, (Stafford) always tells me to keep my eyes on him because he’ll throw it up,” John-

son said. “I saw him do the crow hop, so I knew it was coming. I was just trying to keep the defender in a good place so I could make a play.”

Stafford threw four touchdown passes a week after being benched in a loss to Arizona. He was 27 of 42 for a season-high 405 yards with an interception.

With the Bears up, 31-24, Lions coach Jim Caldwell chose to have Prater kick a 32-yard field goal with 2:46 left in reg-

ulation instead of going for it on fourth-and-4 from the Bears’ 13. Caldwell’s defense then held the Bears to a three-andout. Matt Forte ran for 5 yards on first down, but his next two runs weren’t enough for the first down that could have helped the Bears run out the clock.

“It’s pretty standard,” Cutler said. “You want to get them to burn all their timeouts. We felt good about the runs; we

had a really good first-down run and third-and-manageable.”

Cutler finished 26 of 41 for a season-high 353 yards with a TD. On the first drive of the third quarter, the Bears had the ball at the Detroit 6 when Cutler’s fade pass for Jeffery was intercepted by Rashean Mathis.

The Bears’ defense struggled in the front seven, as shown by the Lions’ success on the ground. But it’s worth asking how much of that was because of the absence of Shea McClellin and Ego Ferguson.

Much was being made of the Bears’ improvement from 31st in the NFL last year in total defense to fourth in the NFL coming into the Lions game. But they still were 28th in points allowed before the Detroit game, and both of those stats will take a serious hit after allowing the Lions 37 points and 546 yards of offense.

If there were any glaring problems Sunday with the Bears, it definitely was in the secondary.

Tracy Porter got beat a few times trying to man up on Calvin Johnson, so welcome to the club.

For the most part, Porter really wasn’t bad.

The rest of the secondary was.

Sherrick McManis is a wonderful special-teams player who clearly won the nickel cornerback job in training camp, but that has to change after Sunday.

He has struggled since the opener against the Packers and left Detroit with first-degree burns courtesy of Golden Tate and Lance Moore.

The other player we have to question going into the bye this Sunday is Kyle Fuller. He seemed to be settling down a bit after a really rough start in the Bears’ first

three losses, but he took a huge step backward Sunday.

Fuller is willing to come up and stick his nose in on the run and bubble screens, but once he has to play on the backpedal or with his back to the quarterback, he’s toast.

More than anything, the Bears’ loss to the Lions was a wakeup call and reminder to Bears fans about where their beloved really stands in the NFL’s current pecking order.

The Bears went into Detroit three-point underdogs and got beat by three points.

None of the reasons for Bears fans’ optimism coming off the two-game winning streak changed.

Cutler was very good again; Alshon Jeffery made a really strong return from his hamstring injury; the young offensive linemen certainly weren’t the reason the Bears lost; and Eddie Goldman, Christian Jones and Adrian Amos grew up a little more at Ford Field.

On the flip side, the Bears still need another wide receiver – probably two – and they still have a clear talent deficit on all three levels of the defense, most glaringly at inside linebacker and in the secondary.

Much of that won’t change until the offseason, but right now this team is learning and competing – and after last year, that’s not all bad.

3 things that worked

1. Special teams: Yes, they were not ready for Detroit’s fake punt in the fourth quarter and should have been, but this was an improved group overall, highlighted by Josh Bellamy and Chris Prosinski’s recoveries of muffed punts.

Kickoff coverage was sound, too – the Bears held the Lions to 69 yards on three returns, and Robbie Gould had five touchbacks. Gould stayed perfect on the season with four field goals; Pat O’Donnell had a net-punting average of 44.4 yards.

2. Passing game: Cutler had two throws that stick out – the interception in the end zone and missing Eddie Royal on second-and-goal.

But overall, he played well, making big plays throughout, especially in the fourth quarter. Cutler threw for 353 yards, converted third downs with his legs and arm.

3. Containing the run: Ameer Abdullah had only 48 yards on 14 carries with a long of 12 yards.

Theo Roddick added 28 yards on seven carries.

The longest run the Bears allowed was Isa Abdul-Quddus’ 30-yarder on the fake punt.

3 that didn’t

1. Red-zone offense: The Bears didn’t just get inside the 20 and fail to find paydirt, they had goal-to-go opportunities they couldn’t cash in.

Whether it was Cutler’s interception, missing Royal on a slant or penalties backing them up, they settled for field goals too often in a game when the defense struggled. Overall, the Bears were 3 for 8 scoring touchdowns in the red zone and 3 for 6 in goal-to-go situations.

2. Running the ball: Matt Forte just couldn’t get going, often getting stopped for no gain or one yard on first down. That put all the pressure on the passing game to be the Bears’ offense. Forte had 24 carries for 69 yards, averaging 2.9 yards a carry. Jeremy Langford didn’t do much better on his five carries, which went for 10 yards.

3. Discipline: Not just talking penalties here; the Bears had way too many missed tackles and a couple crucial drops, too. In a game filled with yellow laundry, the Bears had nine penalties for 76 yards.

Watching the Lions’ 37-34 overtime win Sunday over the Bears was absolutely akin to kissing your sister.

In a game neither team deserved to win, the tallest little person prevailed.

The unknown going in was whether the Lions would show up at all at 0-5, and the answer turned out to be they would come and go during various points in the game.

What Detroit did well enough to win was limiting the Bears to points on just three of their eight visits inside the Lions’ red zone, and the team that came in dead last in the NFL in rushing ground out 155 yards on 32 carries against the Bears, a 4.8 average.

A lot of Bears did a lot of good things on offense versus the Lions – the Bears piled up 444 yards and 24 first downs – but almost every one of them made key mistakes as well.

Jay Cutler was very, very good again – 26-for-41, 353 yards, one touchdown, one interception and two runs for 12 yards. But his interception in the end zone on the opening drive of the second half while trailing 21-13 was extremely costly.

Martellus Bennett and Marquess Wilson continued to make big plays here and there, but each had costly drops on what should have been sure catches.

The Bears’ rebuilt offensive line did a nice job protecting Cutler, but the running game was limited to only 91 yards on 31 rushes, a 2.9 average, mainly because of the Lions’ defensive front dominating the line of scrimmage

Bengals top Bills to go 6-0 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes and the unbeaten Cincinnati Bengals won their sixth straight to match the team’s best start to a season with a 34-21 victory Sunday over the Buffalo Bills.

With star receiver A.J. Green covered much of the game, Dalton completed touchdown passes to Marvin Jones, Tyler Eifert and Jeremy Hill. Dalton finished 22 of 33 for 243 yards for Cincinnati, which was also 6-0 to start the 1975 and ’88 seasons.

The Bills (3-3) were undone by injuries and several penalties that allowed the Bengals to enjoy an average drive start of midfield in the first half.

BRONCOS 26, BROWNS 23, OT: At Cleveland, Peyton

Manning shook off three interceptions and drove Denver in range for Brandon McManus’ 34-yard field goal with 4:56 left in overtime.

Manning took the Broncos from their own 12 to Cleveland’s 16 before McManus kicked his game-winner to make Denver 6-0 for the seventh time in franchise history.

After Manning’s third pick, Denver recorded two sacks to push the Browns (24) out of field-goal range.

PACKERS 27, CHARGERS 20:

At Green Bay, the Packers stopped San Diego on fourthand-goal from the 3 with 15 seconds left and overcame a career day by Philip Rivers to hold off the Chargers.

Rivers set career highs with 43 completions, 65 attempts and 503 yards passing. He threw for two touchdowns for the Chargers (2-4).

But he needed one more completion.

Rookie cornerback Damarious Randall lunged to poke away Rivers’ short pass to Danny Woodhead near the front right pylon in the final seconds.

The fans inside Lambeau Field erupted with a collective sigh of relief. Green Bay (6-0) survived its biggest scare of the year to stay un-

beaten.

PANTHERS 27, SEAHAWKS

23: At Seattle, Cam Newton

threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen with 32 seconds left and Carolina remained unbeaten, rallying for a stunning win over Seattle.

Newton led the Panthers (5-0) to touchdowns on their final two possessions after trailing 23-14, the second straight week the Seahawks collapsed in the fourth quarter. Newton found Olsen wide open down the seam as All-Pros Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman looked at each other in confusion.

It was the second straight week the Seahawks (2-4) suffered a late defensive meltdown.

JETS 34, REDSKINS 20: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, and the Jets overcame a sloppy first half.

Chris Ivory ran for 146 yards and a TD on 20 carries for the Jets, who improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2010. Brandon Marshall had seven catches for 111 yards, and Eric Decker also caught a TD. The Redskins are 2-4.

STEELERS 25, CARDINALS 13:

At Pittsburgh, Landry Jones threw two touchdown passes to Martavis Bryant in relief of Michael Vick as Pittsburgh rallied for the win.

Vick left in the third quarter with a hamstring injury, and Pittsburgh’s offense took off when Jones took over. Jones hit Bryant for an 8-yard score to give the Steelers (4-2) the lead. The two hooked up later for an 88yard strike.

Carson Palmer threw for 421 yards with a TD and two interceptions. John Brown caught 10 balls for 196 yards for the Cardinals (4-2).

VIKINGS 16, CHIEFS 10: At Minneapolis, despite an erratic performance by Terry Bridgewater, Minnesota’s tough defense and rookie wide receiver Stefon Diggs came through over mistake-prone Kansas City.

Alex Smith’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Albert

Wilson midway through the fourth quarter pulled the Chiefs within three points, but the Vikings (3-2) played well enough early to survive their ragged finish.

The Chiefs (1-5) had eight penalties for 95 yards.

49ERS 25, RAVENS 20: At Santa Clara, California, Colin Kaepernick completed a 76-yard touchdown pass to ex-Ravens star Torrey Smith, Joe Flacco threw two interceptions, and San Francisco beat Baltimore to snap a four-game losing streak.

Phil Dawson kicked four field goals in the first win since Week 1 for San Francisco (2-4), while Anquan Boldin – a Super Bowl star for the Ravens against the Niners – made a 51-yard reception late that set up Quinton Patton’s 21-yard TD catch.

Flacco’s desperation pass to the end zone on the final play went incomplete.

Steve Smith caught a 34yard TD pass from Flacco in the third, but the Ravens (1-5) are reeling through the worst start in franchise history.

DOLPHINS 38, TITANS 10: At Nashville, Tennessee, Cameron Wake got his first four sacks this season and forced two fumbles – all in the first half – and Miami won in Dan Campbell’s debut as interim coach.

The Dolphins (2-3) came in having lost three straight, costing coach Joe Philbin his job Oct. 5.

Lamar Miller ran for 113 yards and a TD for Miami.

The Titans (1-4) lost their fourth straight.

TEXANS 31, JAGUARS 20: At Jacksonville, Florida, Brian Hoyer threw three touchdown passes on third down, two to DeAndre Hopkins, for Houston.

The Jaguars (1-5) lost their fourth in a row and raised more questions about coach Gus Bradley’s job security.

The Texans (2-4) started emptying the stadium midway through the fourth after Andre Hal returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown and a 31-14 lead. It was the sixth pick-six thrown by Blake Bortles in 19 career starts.

Logano spins out Kenseth late, wins at Kansas Speedway

By DAVE SKRETTA The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Joey Logano kept peeking around Matt Kenseth as the laps ticked away at Kansas Speedway, the two of them in entirely different situations in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Logano had nothing to lose.

Kenseth had just about everything.

So when Logano got under Kenseth entering Turn 1 with about five laps remaining, and sent him spinning across the track, it left many eyebrows raised long after the Penske Racing driver pulled away on the final restart to win his second straight Chase race.

“That’s good, hard racing,” Logano said. “We were racing each other really hard. I felt like I got fenced twice. He raced me hard so I raced him back.”

Logano was already guaranteed his spot in the next round of the Chase after his victory at Charlotte, however.

After a disastrous race a week ago, Kenseth’s team arrived at Kansas knowing a victory this weekend or next weekend at unpredictable Talladega might be the only way he could make it to the final eight in the “eliminator” round of the playoffs.

That’s why Kenseth was doing everything possible to block Logano.

“I’m really disappointed,”

Kenseth said. “I was running the lane he wanted to run in, but my goodness, isn’t this racing? Strategically, I think it wasn’t the smartest move on his part. He’ll probably sleep good tonight. I hope he enjoys that one. It’s not what I would have done.”

Kenseth wound up leading a race-high 153 laps, but his wild ride with a handful to go dropped him to 14th in the race and, more importantly, last among the 12 drivers in the title race.

“I’m sure we’ll talk about it,” Logano said after hopping out of his No. 22 Ford. “I just felt like I raced hard. I got fenced twice. I wasn’t going to put up with it.”

Uh, Joey, you sure about that chat?

“I won’t talk to Joey. I don’t have anything to talk to him about,” Kenseth said. “I’m one of the only guys that I think hasn’t been into it yet with Joey, and I’ve always raced him with a ton of respect. I’ve actually been one of his biggest fans. I’m certainly not anymore.”

Already eliminated from contention, Jimmie Johnson had a strong car all day and wound up behind Hamlin in third. Kasey Kahne was fourth, followed by Chase drivers Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch. Ryan Blaney was seventh, followed by more title contenders in Carl Edwards, pole sitter Brad Keselowski, Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman.

Last week, we looked at when declarer should ruff or overruff, or discard when he could ruff or overruff.

Over the next two weeks, let’s give the defenders a chance to shine in these areas.

First of all, let’s review a defensive technique that should be automatic for any pair out of beginner classes for, say, a year. South is in four spades.

West leads his singleton diamond.

Surprise, surprise, East wins the trick and returns a diamond for West to ruff.

What should West lead next?

In the auction, North is right to make a game-invitational, not game-forcing, response. His hand has the bad 4-3-3-3 hand distribution and eight losers (three spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club), which makes it textbook for a game-invitational sequence. South probably considered slam, but decided that keeping the opponents in the dark was a better idea.

At trick three, West wants to get his partner back on lead so that he can receive a second diamond ruff to defeat the contract. But should he shift to a heart or a club?

As you surely know, East’s diamond return at trick two gives the answer.

His card transmits a suit-preference signal. If East has the heart ace, he leads back his highest-remaining diamond; here, the nine. Or, if East holds the club ace, he returns his lowest diamond; here, the three.

Now it should be the work of a moment for West to make the correct shift and to receive the lethal second ruff. Finally, if East does not know which suit he wants led back, he returns his middle diamond at trick two ... and confuses and annoys West!

They help the bones fit together.

Muscles in your calf and thighs power the movement of your legs.

Tendons connect muscle to bone and transfer muscle power to the bone to create movement.

For example, a tendon connects the quadriceps muscle in your thigh to the patella, providing the power to extend your leg.

These movements change the position of the knees.

They also affect the parts of the knee joint that bear most of your body weight.

The several different ligaments of the knee help keep it stable. Ligaments are tough, fibrous tissues that connect bones or cartilage at a joint. They allow movement within a safe range.

If you’re a sports fan, you’ve probably heard of the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. A tear of this ligament is a common sports injury. The ACL connects the femur to the tibia in the center of the knee.

Synovial fluid lubricates the knee joint. It minimizes friction as the joint components rub against one another.

It also forms a seal that allows neighboring bones to slide against each other without pulling apart.

I hope this information will help you when your doctor examines your knee and explains what’s wrong.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been having a lot of knee pain.

Would you describe the anatomy of the knee so I can understand more when I see my doctor about it?

Dear Reader: Joints are places where two or more bones meet, to allow a part of your body to move.

And the knee joint is a remarkable structure. It is a complicated network of bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

These structures, working together, allow us to walk, kick, squat and stand back up.

I’ve put an illustration of the knee on my website, www.askdoctork.com.

It will help you to look at this illustration as I describe the various parts of the knee and explain what they do.

Three bones meet at the knee joint: the thigh bone (femur), the shin bone (tibia) and the kneecap (patella). All of your weight above your knee is supported by it. That means your knee joints have to be strong as well as flexible.

At its lower end, the femur divides into two rounded knobs called condyles. The lower end largely rests on the top end of the main bone of the lower leg, the tibia.

The top of the tibia is rather flat with a middle bump. That bump fits in the space between the two rounded condyles.

The mismatch in shape – like two doorknobs balanced on an uneven plate – allows for complex movements. But it makes the knee potentially unstable.

The patella is a small, flat bone that floats in front of the knee joint.

It protects other knee structures, and applies leverage to help straighten the joint.

I was taken by the state as a child in need of care at 14. I’ve been in and out of juvie and did 18 months in juvenile prison. I’m now sitting in adult county jail.

I’m going to get one more chance, according to the judge.

Dear Abby : My 10-yearold daughter and I enjoy hosting sleepovers for her friends from school.

Over the last few years, her circle of friends has increased, as have the dietary needs of said friends.

It went from simple meals like macaroni and cheese, pizza or hamburgers to parents requesting gluten-free cookies, soy milk, almond milk, and other demands that drive me crazy.

I’m willing to accommodate to a point, providing

vegetarian options and no nuts, but for parents to demand that I spend (what seems like) hundreds of dollars on food my family and I never eat is insane.

The last time this happened, I asked the parent – nicely – to provide a small container that I could store in my fridge for the girl to use for her soy milk.

The woman became irate, called me thoughtless and wouldn’t let her daughter come! I don’t know what I did wrong, but apparently I made some faux pas because the same thing happened with a different girl who wanted gluten-free everything.

Abby, what should I do or say in these situations?

I usually provide snacks and such that fit most diets, but a lot of times the main course contains gluten, dairy, etc., and I don’t want to go broke buying select types of food for one kid. – Sally in Washington,

nothing wrong. Asking the mother to have her daughter bring a quart of soy milk with her was not rude, and the same is true for the mother of the girl who has an intolerance for gluten.

The parents of children with food allergies should be used to the routine of providing allowable foods for them to bring when they will be eating away from home, and for you to have received the reaction you did was over the top.
