He is survived by his loving wife, Tammy nee Ryan; and his adored daughter, Leslie Hurley, both of Manhattan; his mother, Irma Paul of Texas; his siblings, Jackie (Robert) Lind, Steven (Janelle) Hurley, Tracy (Caryl) Hurley, Ronald (Peggy) Hurley and Jason (Sandy) Paul; his in-laws, Gerald Ryan, Shirley Ryan and Jerry, Jeremy, Matt and Travis Ryan. Dennis graduated from Lincoln Way Central High School, Class of 1975. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran. He was employed

by Walsh Construction Co. and a member of the Local 150 Operating Engineers.

Dennis was a fun-loving guy who loved his family, enjoyed fishing, scuba diving and motor cycling.

He also loved to travel, especially to Alaska and Florida.

Suddenly Sunday, October 11, 2015 at her late residence.

Born in Joliet to the late Arthur and Janet (nee Hakey) Wallace, she was a lifelong resident. Attended Joliet Central High School.

Judy spent many years in the real estate industry and prior to retirement, she was a pharmacy tech with Jewel/Osco. She was an avid gardener and loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the fullest. Between movies, sleepovers and going to all of their activities, she was their biggest fan. To her children, she was the most dearest mother and best friend they could ever have.

Surviving are her two children, Brian (Maureen) Carey and Janet (Greg) DeNardis, both of Joliet; four grandchildren, Brian Carey, Jr., and Christine McDonnell, Tony and Jenna DeNardis; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Serena Carey; one brother, Arthur (late Anna Mae) Wallace, Jr. of S. Wilmington; one sister, Patricia (Robert) Ward of Joliet; several nieces and nephews.

STATE BRIEFS Speedup of Thompson Center sale proposed

CHICAGO – Plans to speed up the sale of the state-government owned James R. Thompson Center, and potentially avoid a lengthy public comment period, have been submitted at Gov. Bruce Rauner’s request, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said Thursday.

Earlier this week, the GOP governor announced intentions to sell the 16-story downtown Chicago building he called a “wasteful” use of government resources requiring roughly $100 million in maintenance.

Rauner said his plan was to move roughly 2,200 state employees to offices nearby or in Springfield and put the building up for public auction within a year.

Legislation proposed Wednesday by Durkin also detailed options to sell or lease through a sealed competitive bidding process or launch a public-private partnership. The proposal also alters how appraisals are used and also allows Rauner to skip requirements that the building first be available for sale to other public entities such as the city.

Chicago Park Dist. OKs Lucas museum lease

CHICAGO – The Chicago Park District has signed off on a 99year lease for filmmaker George Lucas’ proposed museum along Lake Michigan.

Park district officials voted unanimously Wednesday to approve the $10 lease on the lakefront property for the nonprofit

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The lease still must be approved by the city’s Department of Zoning and its Plan Commission.

Nonprofit group Friends of the Parks is suing the park district to prevent the museum from being built south of Soldier Field.

Current plans for the $400 million project call for a 300,000square-foot structure with nearly 5 acres of green space.

Construction could begin as early as the spring, and the museum could be operating by 2019 or 2020.

O’Hare opens new runway in modernization effort

CHICAGO – Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport opened a new runway and air traffic control tower Thursday, completing the latest piece of a nearly $9 billion overhaul of its outdated airfield.

For more than a decade, Chicago has been untangling O’Hare’s six crisscrossing runways and rearranging them in a safer, more efficient side-by-side layout that’s supposed to unclog one of the nation’s worst aviation bottlenecks. Yet delays still ensnare passengers traveling through the hub, and O’Hare is generally ranked dead last for on-time performance among the country’s 29 biggest airports.

Speakers at Thursday’s commissioning emphasized that improving O’Hare’s efficiency is a plus for the country’s aviation network and for Chicago’s aspirations to be a center of global commerce and innovation.

Hastert attorney says former speaker intends to plead guilty

By MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press CHICAGO – Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert intends to plead guilty in a hush-money case linked to allegations of sexual misconduct, a defense attorney said Thursday, a move that could ensure any secrets from his days as a high school wrestling coach never are revealed in public.

A written plea agreement should be completed by Monday, attorney John Gallo told a federal judge during a brief status hearing. At the attorney’s request, the judge set Oct. 28 as the date for the 73-year-old Illinois Republican to change his plea.

Defendants typically agree to plead guilty in hopes of a more lenient sentence.

A plea deal also would avert a trial that could divulge more about the alleged misconduct behind the criminal charges.

Neither Gallo nor prosecutors offered details about any possible deal, including which counts Hastert would plead guilty to or whether the man who was once second in the line of succession for the presidency would go to prison. Hastert did not attend Thursday’s hearing.

He faces one count of breaking banking laws and one count of lying to the FBI about agreeing to pay $3.5 million to someone referred to in the indictment only as “Individual A.” The money was supposedly to hide claims of unspecified past misconduct.

A plea deal would mean that Individual A, who has never been identified, would not have to testify about receiving any of the money. The Associated Press and other media, citing anonymous sources, have reported that the payments were meant to conceal claims of sexual misconduct.

Prosecutors probably are seeking a prison sentence. It would be unusual for them to entertain the possibility of probation on such serious charges. Each count is punishable by up to five years behind bars.

When Hastert was charged in May, the indictment noted he had taught and coached high school wrestling from 1965 to 1981 in close-knit Yorkville. That strongly suggests the charges are linked to that history.

Those acquainted with Hastert from his days in Yorkville have tended to express sympathy for him.

Helene McNeive, whose husband taught at Yorkville High School with Hastert and now lives in Arizona, said Thursday’s word about the plea left her feeling “very sad” for the whole Hastert family.

“From the beginning, this was not the Denny we knew,” she said. “He was a great father, a great husband and a great friend, and nobody in their wildest dreams could ever think this could have happened.”

Related allegations emerged after Hastert’s in-

dictment. A Montana woman, Jolene Burdge, told the AP that the FBI interviewed her in May about allegations her brother had a sexual relationship with Hastert.

Her brother told her before he died in 1995 that his first homosexual contact was with Hastert and that the abuse lasted throughout high school. In an interview aired on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Burdge identified her brother as Stephen Reinboldt.

Hastert was questioned by banking officials in 2012 about 15 withdrawals of $50,000 in cash over two years.

After that, he allegedly began structuring withdrawals in increments just under $10,000 to avoid reporting rules.

Asked by FBI agents in December 2014 if he was withdrawing so much cash because he didn’t think it was safe in banks, the indictment said Hastert responded, “Yeah, I kept the cash. That’s what I’m doing.”

Hastert, who led the House for nine years, could still change his mind about pleading guilty. Gallo told Judge Thomas M. Durkin that the defense “reserved the right” to go to trial if talks collapse in the final days.

JOLIET – When two boys soccer teams close out regular-season play, you often don’t know if the match will be taken seriously, especially when it’s a nonconference contest.

But both Lincoln-Way West and Joliet West made it clear from the outset of Thursday’s match that they weren’t just going to go through the motions in their regular-season finales.

With both squads looking for a strong finish before hosting regionals next week, the host Tigers grabbed the early lead before the Warriors evened things not long before the break.

Although there were plenty of good chances for both Wests during the final half, neither could connect and the pair wound up settling for a 1-1 draw.

The Tigers (12-8-2) bounced back from a slow start by going 9-4-1 down the stretch.

During that run, they went 4-2 in SouthWest Suburban Blue play, which helped them secure a three-way tie for the title along with Bolingbrook and Stagg.

Now coach Patrick Korthauer’s team will set its sights on its own Class 3A regional, where it meets United Township on Tuesday and could run into defending state runner-up Normal Community, who’s 145-1 this season, in Friday’s title match.

“Our offense is not where we want it to be, but we’re doing just enough, and we aren’t turning the ball over. We’ve made just enough big plays offensively. We do this thing every week that we call the turnover circuit, working on punching the ball out, scooping and scoring, all of that. Our coaches always say, ‘Give me the ball.

We need the ball.’ ” Curry was on the USF staff when Mike Uremovich was the coach, and the philosophy hasn’t changed.

“That’s the way it always has been since Mike Uremovich was here,” Curry said.

It’s no secret what wins most football games.

University of St. Francis, under coach Joe Curry and his staff, is perfecting the formula.

If your defense forces turnovers while your offense protects the ball, you have an awfully good chance to succeed.

The Saints (5-1) opened the season with a 34-28 victory over St. Xavier. Since then, they have beaten Lincoln (Mo.), 13-10; Missouri Baptist, 45-7; Robert Morris, 24-14; Concordia, 12-3, and St. Ambrose, 25-10.

It hasn’t mattered that four of the five victories have come on the road. USF has forced 25 turnovers, second in the nation among NAIA schools, and committed eight. That will play regardless of the venue.

The Saints’ average takeaway margin of plus-2.83 is second in the nation. Combine that with the No. 1-ranked rushing defense (76.3 yards a game), No. 3 scoring defense (13.0) and No. 9 total defense (305.3), and you get a good idea why they are riding a five-game winning streak, the second-longest in school history, entering Saturday’s 1 p.m. home game against Truman State (2-4).

“We have played well defensively all year,” Curry said. “We pride ourselves on turnovers. When we get them, it’s definitely welcome.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In response to neighborhood outcry, the Will County Board voted Thursday to reduce the weight limit along Manhattan-Arsenal Road near the CenterPoint intermodals to deter semitrailers from using the route.

The road stretches eastwest from Route 53 to Baseline Road and lies just north of the now-closed Walter Strawn Drive, previously a major access point for truckers into the intermodals.

After some debate and hearing from two residents, the County Board voted, 147, to reduce the weight from 15 tons to 5 tons. Democrat board members Denise Winfrey and Herbert Brooks, both representing Joliet Township, voted present.

Some County Board members questioned if the new signs will be effective.

Others, such as Brooks, said they also are concerned about setting a dangerous precedent for truck access on other roads in the region.

‘Reasonable access’

A grassroots group of residents gathered 503 signatures for a petition requesting a solution to the truck traffic, but Will County elected leaders hesitated and said they were worried a change would lead to legal challenges.

“You literally have to pause from your conversation and wait for the trucks to pass before continuing.”

“The truck noise is hard to understand until you have the opportunity sit on a front or back porch near Manhattan Road. You literally have to pause from your conversation and wait for the trucks to pass before continuing,” Banas said. “Many of our residents have lived there for decades, along with some searching for a country life, only to see their road turn into a truck route.”

The vote was prefaced by comments from Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Mock, of the civil division. He explained how the Federal Highway Act allows the county to limit the weight as long as reasonable access to the intermodals remains.

Mock said trucking companies or other businesses could bring a lawsuit claiming the county is limiting

interstate commerce, but he doesn’t see that argument winning in court.

“From my understanding, we have a dedicated truck route that comes off I-55 [and Arsenal Road], which I think the courts would determine reasonable,” Mock said.

Board member Don Moran cautioned that a truck driver could bring an equal protection lawsuit if county deputies ticketed a semitrailer for using the route, but not garbage trucks or school buses that are just as heavy.

“With enforcement issues, you always have discretion. Even with semi trucks, if you stopped every third because you don’t have the manpower to stop every one, they could claim that [equal protection clause], but it wouldn’t be upheld,” Mock said.

Other board members raised concern that the move sets a dangerous precedent for other roads – such as Laraway and Weber roads – in a region that is experiencing a spike in truck traffic juxtaposed with residential areas.

Mock said the point could be made – but, again, the “reasonable access” provision is key.

Will County – which has jurisdiction over the road – lowered the speed limit from 50 to 45 mph earlier this year to address some safety concerns.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme Court upheld a Will County judge’s decision to dismiss drug charges against a Naperville man.

In a decision filed Oct. 8, the seven justices unanimously reversed the appellate court’s decision and agreed Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak was right to dismiss the indictment against Anthony M. Stapinski, 24, from a 2011 case.

In April 2011, postal inspectors notified Romeoville police that a package from Pakistan addressed to Stapinski was suspected to contain ketamine, according to court filings. Stapinski was taken into custody when he came to get his mail, and was taken to the Romeoville police station, where he was asked if he would work for narcotics investigators and told he would not be charged if he cooperated.

Stapinski, his mother and attorney later said police never specified how many cases he would have to help with, and they believed his obligations were fulfilled after he delivered the ketamine to two men who later were arrested.

In March 2012, police filed charges against Stapinski for possession of ketamine because he had not assisted in four cases as agreed, according to court filings.

Stapinski filed to have the indictment dismissed.

Bertani-Tomczak noted that three of the four witnesses who testified about Stapinski’s meeting with police said no number of cases was specified and “the defendant’s due process rights were violated because he incriminated himself based upon the promises that were made to him,” Justice Anne Burke wrote in the Supreme Court opinion.

Prosecutors appealed on the grounds the deal between Stapinski and the police never was approved. The appellate court ruled it was possible Stapinski could receive a fair trial if his incriminating statements were suppressed.

“Whether or not the cooperation agreement was ‘valid’ in the sense that it was approved by the state’s attorney is not important,” Burke wrote. “An unauthorized promise may be enforced on due process grounds if a defendant’s reliance on the promise has constitutional consequences.”

Russell ruled out for NLCS with hamstring injury

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – The Cubs will send Jon Lester to the mound for Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on Saturday, and Javier Baez will start at shortstop after Addison Russell was shelved by a left hamstring injury.

Russell got hurt while legging out a triple in Game 3 of the NL Division Series against the Cardinals. He said he felt the hamstring grab while he was rounding second, and manager Joe Maddon said the rookie had a moderate strain.

“Addy, right now, will not participate in this next round,” Maddon said Thursday. “We’re not going to uti-

lize him. Continue to work on him. Hopefully if everything plays properly and we have another opportunity to play in another round he might be available at that time, but for sure not this one.”

Maddon said they haven’t made a decision on Russell’s replacement for the NLCS roster against the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets, which must be submitted by Saturday morning. Reliever Jason Motte, who has been out with a right shoulder strain, is a possibility for this round, and Maddon said he likely will use four starters in the best-of-seven series.

The Cubs worked out for about two hours Thursday, with their young sluggers put-

ting on another show during batting practice. But there was nothing like the drive Kyle Schwarber hit during the final game against St. Louis, a massive solo shot that settled on top of the scoreboard in right field.

The team authenticated the ball, and then placed a case over it. The plan is to leave the ball there for at least the rest of the playoffs.

“It’s pretty cool that it’ll stay out there throughout this postseason,” Schwarber said.

“Just a good honor. You know, it’s, I just look at it as another home run.”

Baez, another one of those promising young hitters, replaced Russell in the NLDS, and hit a three-run homer

in Chicago’s series-ending 6-4 victory in Game 4. The 22-year-old slugger has bigtime power, but he has struck out a lot during his brief time in the majors.

“Addison has played enough here this year to know that he belongs here and he can do this. I want to believe that Javy is arriving at that same point,” Maddon said. “I think to hit a three-run homer in a playoff game like that against one of the best pitchers in the National League should boost your confidence.”

After Lester pitches in the opener, Jake Arrieta will go in Game 2 on Sunday night.

Lester is 6-5 with a 2.66 ERA in 15 career postseason games, including 13 starts.

Holtby’s 26 saves lift Capitals to win over Hawks WASHINGTON – Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots, Alex Ovechkin scored a goal in his return to the Washington lineup and the Capitals beat the punchless Blackhawks, 4-1, on Thursday.

John Carlson, T.J. Oshie and Matt Niskanen also scored the Capitals, who welcomed back Ovechkin after a one-game disciplinary absence.

Coming off a 3-0 loss to Philadelphia one night earlier, the Hawks trailed by three goals in this one before Viktor Svedberg got his first goal of the season at 3:13 of the third period. That ended a scoreless drought of 107 minutes, 46 seconds for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Murphy, Mets beat Dodgers to reach NLCS

LOS ANGELES – Daniel Murphy stole an uncovered third base and went on to score the tying run, then hit a go-ahead homer off Zack Greinke to lead the New York Mets over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2, Thursday night and into an NL Championship Series matchup with the Cubs.

New York trailed, 2-1, in the decisive Game 5 of the NL Division Series when with three infielders on the right side and no one near third, Murphy strolled to second on Lucas Duda’s walk and sprinted to third.

Travis d’Arnaud followed with a sacrifice fly, and Murphy homered in the sixth.

Jacob deGrom allowed runners in all six of his innings but just two runs. Noah Syndergaard pitched the seventh, and Jeurys Familia got the first six-out save of his career.

Despite a record $289 million payroll, the Dodgers remained without a World Series title since 1988. Andre Ethier shouted at Dodgers manager Don Mattingly in the dugout in the third.

Depth of malnutrition

The 2015 Global Nutrition Report, produced by an independent group of international stakeholders, contains at least two compelling figures.

The first is, in an era of great technological progress, the world has an estimated 1 billion malnourished people. The second is 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year, enough to feed 3 billion people – indeed, everyone who is hungry with plenty left over.

It’s an appalling picture, one that speaks to the uneven distribution of wealth in the world and one that challenges those who have to find better ways of helping those who have not.

The report was funded by numerous sources, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, the European Commission and the governments of Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In the U.S., where overeating is a common problem, most people have access to more food on a daily basis than they need. Americans, at home or in restaurants, throw away tons of uneaten food every day. The challenge is to find some method of transferring such excess nourishment to those in need.

It can be done locally, through institutions such as the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. It is also possible to donate money to food banks and other organizations that try to meet the needs of the hungry.

Many international aid organizations also make good use of donations that try to attack the problem.

The real health burden of malnutrition is borne by the poor of this world, who live in countries such as Haiti, South Sudan, Bangladesh and the Central African Republic. It is ironic that the need is most severe in the places that are hardest to help, given wars, corruption and hostile geography.

But none of these vexing realities excuse those around the world with plenty to eat from striving to help those who are malnourished.

To the Editor: Who’s responsible for erasing America’s shortage of skilled workers? That is the question posed by The Atlantic last month in a story on why our workforce suffers from unemployment and underemployment while businesses say there is a shortage of workers with the skills needed to fill thousands of jobs.

October is Careers in Construction Month, so let’s talk specifics about who will build the communities of the future.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said we will need 1.6 million new construction workers by 2022. Already about four in five members of Associated Builders and Contractors said there is a shortage of skilled labor, and a quarter of construction workers are expected to retire in the next 10 years.

Plainfield hot dog venue offers ghoulish menu in October More online

By DAWN AULET Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Last year, Marcus Mooney, owner of Frank’s Night Out in Plainfield, added crickets and scorpions to the tops of hot dogs and sold them as specials.

They sold out in three hours.

So Mooney brought those dogs back this year for the month of October. By Oct. 9, Mooney had sold about 20 Signature Scorpion Dogs. He also sells Zombie Dogs. Both are topped with edible bugs.

Yes, bugs.

The trick, Mooney said, is adding the intimidating food item to a common hot dog.

“People will try them because it’s on something that’s familiar,” Mooney said. “It’s for shock and it’s for fun for Halloween.”

The Scorpion Dog starts with a bacon-wrapped hot dog. It’s then topped with habenero-jack cheese, spicy mac and cheese with scorpion pepper powder, breaded and battered jalepenos and the scorpion.

Strange? Well, Mooney – in his travels – has eaten both crickets and scorpion.

“I actually took a trip to Mexico, and in Mexico they have grasshoppers – roasted grasshoppers – in tacos,” Mooney said.

Placing bug-topped hot dogs on the menu around Halloween isn’t just for shock value. Mooney feels they enhance the taste of the hot dogs.

“Definitely you’re going to get a lot of texture out of it,” Mooney said. “If you can get beyond the thought of it, they’re really good. It’s a very light nutty flavor.”

Mooney said the crickets that top the Zombie Dog have a similar “light, nutty flavor.”

also has basil aioli, coleslaw – and breaded calves’ brains.

The calves’ brain is sliced on-site and breaded in panko bread crumbs. Mooney said it

has a creamy texture, somewhat like a pâté.

While the brains are prepared on-site, the bugs are not, Mooney said. They come to the Plainfield restaurant from Thailand, where they are roasted and canned. They are prepared much like a nut would be.

Most of the customers for these dogs are men. Last year, Mooney said, only two women tried them. However, women are asking about the Death Valley Burger, which Mooney soon will add to the menu.

The Death Valley Burger begins with the meat from a pork, rabbit and rattlesnake sausage to which beef is added. The burger is then topped with jalepenos, spicy aioli, onion rings and sauteed cactus. The burger is served on a pretzel bun.

If that doesn’t awaken the taste buds, there’s always the

Hannibal Lecter Burger – a traditional beef burger topped with calves’ brains, a Chianti reduction and fava beans.

Mooney opened Frank’s Night Out in 2013 after being inspired by an amazing hot dog sold from a cart on a trip to Germany. But his culinary talents are not limited to shock on a bun.

“I’ve been a chef for over 20 years,” Mooney said.

“Right now, I am the corporate chef for Tommy Nevins.”

In addition to the Halloween specials, Frank’s Night Out will be adding about a dozen new items to its menu starting Nov. 1. One is a Lobster Burger, which includes a house-made salmon mousse into which is folded lobster meat and shrimp.

The Lobster Burger will be topped with avocado, Asian-inspired cucumber coleslaw, unagi sauce and sriracha mayo.

A bridge player could rewrite that as: Ruffing or overruffing is not always a remedy for making or breaking a contract; each deal must be taken on its own merits.

In today’s deal, South is in four hearts. West starts the defense with three rounds of diamonds. East plays high-low, then ruffs dummy’s queen with the heart 10. What should declarer do?

It is unappealing to open one club with only three low cards in the suit, but with 13 high-card points, one cannot pass. (For those of you who use the Support Double, North’s twoheart rebid guarantees four-card support. With only three hearts, North would double over two diamonds.)

South, assuming trumps are not 4-0, seems to have only three losers: two diamonds and one club. It looks easy to overruff at trick three, draw trumps, and claim. Here, though, there is a nasty surprise waiting for declarer. He suddenly finds that he has a trump loser and goes down one.

South should realize that whatever happens, he will lose a club trick – so why not concede it now? Instead of overruffing, declarer should discard his club eight. Then everything is under control.

Don’t overruff when it might result in an opponent gaining a trump trick and you have an inevitable loser to discard.

There are many reasons why labor may be induced rather than waiting for it to begin on its own. These include concerns about the mother’s or baby’s health.

Oxytocic medicines may be used to induce or speed up labor. The one most commonly used is called oxytocin (Pitocin). It is used to help contractions begin if there aren’t any. It also is used to increase the frequency of contractions when fewer occur naturally.

The dose of oxytocin will be adjusted to allow relaxation between contractions. Relaxation is needed to ensure a fetus receives enough oxygen during labor.

If the fetal heart rate suggests the baby is not getting enough oxygen, the oxytocin dose may be reduced or stopped.

Prostaglandins are given to help with the process of inducing labor. If you need this type of drug, your vital signs (heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure) will be closely monitored.

For most of human history, women simply gave birth; there were no medicines for pain or to speed labor. Today, we have medicines and tools for monitoring what is happening with both the mother and the baby, and that allows the doctor to safely adjust the doses of the medicines used. Be glad that your first baby will arrive in the 21st century.

Dear Reader : Many medications can be given for pain relief during childbirth. Other drugs may be given to assist your labor.

The pain medicines may not stop pain completely, but they will greatly lessen it. Narcotics such as meperidine (Demerol) are frequently used to relieve labor pain. If a baby is born soon after a mother receives any narcotic, the baby’s rate of breathing may be slower than normal at birth. This effect generally is short-term.

If it occurs, it can be reversed with an anti-narcotic drug.

Anesthetics are medications given during labor to numb you from the waist down. They do not put you to sleep. Anesthetics can be given as an epidural or a spinal injection.

Epidural anesthesia is the most common type used for pain relief during labor. But because it numbs you from the waist down, it can prolong your labor or diminish your ability to push out your baby.

It numbs the nerves that do the pushing, as well as the nerves that feel pain. This may lead your doctor to use a vacuum or forceps to help deliver your baby. Spinal anesthesia is used as an alternative to epidural or general anesthesia when cesarean delivery is needed.

Epidural medications can lower your blood pressure; they also can slow the baby’s heartbeat temporarily. If this happens, raising your blood pressure with fluids or medication will almost always fix the problem.

Dear Abby: I’m on the verge of 30, and my fiancé has a huge issue with the fact that I still cuddle with my mom.

From what he says, his family isn’t wild about it, either.

Mom has suffered a great deal of loss in her life. She has lost all of her immediate family (aside from her kids) to cancer. We were all caretakers for these family members, doing in-home hospice, and we have formed a unique bond.

My fiancé has never even been to a funeral, so it’s hard for me to explain this to him.

Those who saw Goretti are asked to forgive in name of saint

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Bonnie Goedert was in awe Thursday after she was in the presence of the relics of a Catholic saint.

Goedert, of Shorewood, grew up in the Catholic Church and had learned about the saints and their significance to her religion. So she knew she, and her parents, would make a pilgrimage to see the relics of St. Maria Goretti when they stopped in Plainfield for a day.

“It meant a lot to see her with my parents. It’s surreal that I saw the remains of a saint, and I’m in awe of the whole experience,” Goedert said.

The family was among the thousands who flocked Thursday to St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. In conjunction with Pope Francis’ declared Holy Year of Mercy, from September to November, the relics of Goretti – who was declared a saint in 1950 by Pope Pius XII – will take a “Pilgrimage of Mercy” tour for the first time in the United States.

The Rev. David Medows of St. Mary Immaculate said a year ago he and the tour director, the Rev. Carlos Martins, began talks about bringing the relics of Goretti to the area, and planning began in early summer.

“Having this event means our church can fulfill its mission to pull people to Christ.

[Goretti’s] faith, love-and-mercy story draws people in, and her work for the Lord continues,” Medows said.

At 10 a.m., the glass casket with a wax statue, which was cast to resemble the saint’s body and contains most of the skeletal remains of Goretti, was unloaded from the transport vehicle and carefully wheeled into the church sanctuary, while hundreds of people sat in pews, and hundreds

Vaping popularity grows, but regulators watching Joliet vape retailer says he offers a healthy option for smokers people. He argues that teens who take up vaping are giving up smoking.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a study in April that states use of e-cigarettes among middle and high school students tripled from 2013 to 2014.

“If this were smoke, we’d all be dead,” laughed co-owner Tony Jirgis.

The customers at the Joliet store weren’t smoking. They were vaping.

To vape, a user will pull from a mouthpiece at the top of an electronic cigarette, which vaporizes nicotine, according to the American Vaping Association. E-cigarettes do not have the carcinogenic impact of smoking tobacco.

The closest resemblance to smoking, Jirgis said, is that the typical customer is an ex-smoker who has opted for vaping as a healthier way to ingest nicotine. A sign at the front door of the Jefferson Street store warns customers that no smoking is allowed within 15 feet of the entrance.

Jirgis, a smoker for half of his 32 years, testifies to the change he experienced after the switch to vaping.

“You get your scent back.

You get your taste buds back.

You wake up, and you’re not tired all the time,” Jirgis said.

He tells stories of a truck drivers, Marlboro red smokers, and an uncle who kicked the smoking habit after switching to vaping.

But regulators and some taxing bodies are taking a look at the rapidly growing use of electronic cigarettes, considering the health impact of vaping, and looking to impose the kind of taxes placed on tobacco.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration, calling for child-resistant packaging and warning labels “similar to the labels on other tobacco products.” Such regulations already exist in Illinois.

“Nicotine is harmful no matter how it is consumed,” Madigan said in a statement, “and e-cigarettes should come with warnings about its dangers.”

Regulators, however, label it a tobacco product and are increasingly looking to regulate it like tobacco.

It’s hard to overlook that the liquefied nicotine at Mi

Vape Co. has nicotine, even though everyone calls it “juice.” Flavors vary, from watermelon to barbecue chicken.

Juice comes in nicotine levels of 0, 3, 6 or 12 milligrams, depending on how much nicotine the customer wants.

Customer Tyler Breland from Chicago calculates his nicotine intake.

“I was smoking five to six cigarettes a day,” Breland said. “At my current level, I figured I’d have to be constantly vaping at my house for an hour to get one cigarette.”

the way from Chicago to Mi Vape Co. “They have a great shop,” he said. “The guys are cool, and they have a great juice line.”

If Chicago passes a proposed tax on electronic cigarettes, Breland said, he may come to Joliet more frequently for his juice.

That tax would add $7.50 to a 30 milliliter jar of liquefied nicotine, which typically sells for between $15 and $22, said Gregory Colby, president of the American Vaping Association.

Colby was in Chicago on Wednesday to testify against the tax when news came out that Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle had proposed a county tax on e-cigarettes at 20 cents a milliliter.

“There are two dozen vapor retail specialty stores in Chicago,” Colby said. “This tax is going to stop those stores from helping smokers quit, and it may put them out of business.”

Many vaping retailers, including Jirgis and his cousin, Joe Jirjees, see themselves as helping people break the smoking habit.

Jirjees, a partner at Mi Vape Co., said he wanted to open a store that would help people new to vaping understand the product lines, which can be confusing and expensive. Battery operated devices used to inhale liquefied nicotine can cost anywhere from $10 to more than $100.

Jirjees said he found retailers continually trying to upsell him when he shopped for products.

“We wanted to give the community what they should get from a vape shop,” Jirjees said. “You want to get the customer to know what they’re buying. We want them to be comfortable.”

New retailers such as Mi Vape Co., which opened in May, are making the business increasingly competitive.

Many vape stores are regional chains with multiple stores in the Chicago area. Tobacco stores and even gas stations are adding e-cigarettes to their inventories.

Regulators, including state and local governments, still are trying to figure out whether they should do anything about the product.

Vic Reato, spokesman for the Will County Health Department, said some but not all local school districts have policies prohibiting e-cigarettes on campus. Municipalities in the county also are exploring ordinances to ban their use in public places, he said.

Lincoln-Way East students symbolize unity vs. bullying

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way East High School students are linking together to create awareness of bullying.

Hanging from the ceiling of the hallways of the Frankfort high school are light blue chain links with the names of students on one side and a positive word or statement on the other.

The project was started by the Be the Change student club. “[The chains] represents that we’re all against bullying together, and everyone makes a pledge,” said Kate Wardenburg, student and club member.

Wardenburg is one of almost 100 students who are part of the Be the Change club.

Members of the club – who are nominated by teachers – seek to make East’s student environment more inclusive and prevent bullying.

Last year, Be the Change

members encouraged students to visualize their pledge to prevent bullying by painting hand prints on a wall inside the school cafeteria. The wall bears hand prints in shades of blue, accompanied by the words “Be The Change.”

Wardenburg said that every year, the club grows larger in membership and its causes are more relatable to students because it is run by students.

“There’s a difference between a teacher saying bullying is not good and your own peers saying, ‘Guys, this is not cool,’” she said.

Megan Hussey, another student member, said students will say the phrase “Be the change” to other students who say something rude, even when what they say is a joke.

She said the phrase gets across the point of people needing to be mindful of what they say.

“We have a positive environment at our school. Bullying is not something you see often,” Hussey said. “It’s also

By FELIX SARVER JOLIET – More than 90 percent of students who took part in Joliet Public Schools District 86’s summer program reported they enjoyed it.

Ankhe Bradley, the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, presented a report Wednesday on summer school to the Board of School Inspectors showing not only how much students enjoyed the programs, but that teachers made learning fun.

“Some of the comments from the kids: ‘I like team-building activities,’ ‘I’m happy I was able to come to the program’ and ‘I like learning about building,’” Bradley said.

The summer school program at District 86 has expanded over the years under Superintendent Charles Coleman,

who will retire in July. Over the years, the summer school program transformed from a two-days-a-week, two-week program to a four-days-a-week, six-week program.

District officials said students performing below grade level have a better chance of catching up with their peers under the expanded summer school program.

The six-week program offered CAMP Explore to students kindergarten through fifth grade and CAMP STEAM to sixth- and seventh-graders. The two-week program offered Ready Set Grow camp to kindergarten through second-grade students and StepUp camp for fifth-graders.

Total enrollment for summer school was 1,050 students, Bradley said.

Besides the chain links and hand prints, East students wore blue clothes last week in honor of anti-bullying efforts.

Last year, Be the Change club members wrote positive notes to every student in school.

Be the Change has launched its chain link project as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. The campaign was founded in 2006 by PACER National Bullying Prevention Center. It is held in October to unite communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.

Jayson Polad, East student activities coordinator, said Be the Change has evolved to do more than just prevent bullying and makes the school more inclusive. Club members are focused on ensuring everyone feels they are part of the school and community.

“It enhances the anti-bullying message,” Polad said.

Students part of CAMP STEAM engaged in several projects over the summer, including reading content-specific information and responding to text, building helmets for events such as boxing and football; building model wheelchairs for use in Paralympic races; and testing devices for accuracy and precision.

Dental records may ID Joliet stabbing victim

PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield house sustained thousands of dollars in damage in a fire Thursday.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District received a 911 call at 11:49 a.m. reporting a fire in the back of a two-story single-family home in the 25000 block of West Blakely Drive, according to a district news release.

The fire appears to have started on the rear deck of the house, spread to the attic and caused damage to the home’s exterior and attic, the release stated. Additionally, smoke damaged the interior of the house, which is uninhabitable, the release said.

The blaze was brought under control at 12:32 p.m., according to the release. Damage was estimated at $250,000. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the district, the Plainfield Police Department and the MABAS 15 Fire Investigators.

Assistance in fighting the fire was provided by agencies in Oswego and Naperville, while those from Bolingbrook, Channahon, Minooka and Troy provided station coverage.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Thursday that Joliet police discovered a dentist’s business card inside the trailer in the 1600 block of Dianne Drive.

“The dentist sent some records for the listed resident, and an odontologist will examine them [Thursday] night for a comparison,” O’Neil said.

Neighbors called police Tuesday morning after noticing a foul odor coming from the trailer. Inside, officers discovered a man’s decomposing body.

“The condition of the remains will require either the dental match or DNA comparison,” O’Neil said.

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers are keeping the party going in Will County, as Silver Cross Field will host its third Watch Party event Saturday so Cubs fans can watch Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on a video board with more than 900 square feet of live space.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., and the Slammers will open gates one hour before the start time. All dayof-event purchases, such as tickets and concessions, must be paid for in cash, according to a news release from the Slammers.

Beers for $2 will be available, and 125 indoor seating spots in the luxury suite level will be for sale until 5 p.m. Friday by calling the Slammers at 815-722-2287.
