JOLIET – A man’s body was found Tuesday inside a mobile home in Joliet.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Al Roechner said authorities were called at 7:40 a.m. Tues-

day to the 1600 block of Dianne Drive after neighbors in the trailer park reported a “strong, foul odor” coming from one of the residences.

“Officers went inside to investigate and discovered the body of a man who had been stabbed several times,” Roech-

ner said.

Roechner said police believe the victim is the man who lived there, but Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said a positive identification is not expected for at least two weeks.

“The body was in the ad-

vanced stages of decomposition. We’re trying to find if dental records exist, but may need to use DNA comparison,” O’Neil said.

Roechner noted the mobile home was not ransacked and neighbors told police only one man lives in the trailer.

Man gets six years in prison for grabbing girls

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A hospital worker was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison for trying to grab two Bolingbrook high school girls off the street.

Kareem L. Green, 22, was found guilty of attempted kidnapping, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and Kareem L. battery during Green a bench trial two months ago before Judge Dave Carlson at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.

“I believe the evidence rises to the level not just beyond

a reasonable doubt, but no doubt based on witness statements and [Green’s] statements,” Carlson said. Green was eligible for probation and faced a maximum of eight years behind bars.

On Jan. 29, 2013, a then16-year-old girl was walking home from school when Green tried forcing her into his Ford Explorer at Radcliff Drive and Old Stone Road. A passer-by saw the struggle and yelled at Green, who ran away, according to police reports.

Two days later, another then-16-year-old girl walked toward a friend’s apartment building in the 300 block of Woodcreek Drive at the same time as Green, Carlson said.

“We both proceeded to

walk in the same direction and went into the same building. It all just seemed like a coincidence at the time,” the victim wrote Carlson in a letter that was read in court Wednesday.

“Moments after stepping into the building and making it to the second-floor hallway, he runs behind me and tries covering my mouth with his right hand while his left hand was on my behind,” the letter read. “Luckily, his attempt at covering my mouth failed and I had the opportunity to elbow him once to get him off as I also yelled for help.”

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A bailiff, a lawyer and a reporter occupied the large number of seats available behind Michael T. Eberle during his sentencing Wednesday at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.

Behind the prosecutors sat dozens of people who considered his victim, Patrick M. Shaughnessy, “family,” although the Shorewood man had no blood relatives when he was killed March 25, 2012.

In August, Eberle pleaded guilty to Shaughnessy’s murder just before he was scheduled to face trial in exchange for 35 years in prison. Eberle did not speak Wednesday before Judge Dave Carlson issued the negotiated sentence.

On the morning of Shaugh-

nessy’s death, Eberle was seen breaking into a house in Shorewood’s Saddlebrook Estates subdivision and fled the scene by stealing a pickup truck from another residence, police said.

About an hour later, an employee arrived to work at Knauer Industries, 19515 Northeast Frontage Road, and found Eberle coming out of the burial vault company, which was not open to the public at the time, and called police.

Will County sheriff’s deputies searched the plant to find Patrick M. Shaughnessy, 69, had been beaten to death with a crowbar and fire extinguisher. Eberle was discovered hiding in some nearby weeds and arrested. Shaughnessy had worked at Knauer for 25 years before his death.

“He ... spent holidays and

birthdays with the whole family. He went on vacations every year with [us]. He was like an uncle to my children,” Suzanna Knauer said Wednesday.

“Patrick was the kind of person who would talk to anyone, no matter who they were or where he was. Patrick was a lovable guy,” Knauer said.

“My only wish for [Eberle] is that he gets what is coming to him. When you murder someone, especially when you beat them to death, you deserve a special place in hell.”

At a hearing in 2013, Assistant Public Defender Stewart Ferreira said Eberle had a history of abusing synthetic stimulants known as “bath salts,” which can cause brain damage as well as hallucinations and psychosis, but a judge determined he was fit to stand trial.

Joliet show transports audience to different time periods

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Eric Moniger adjusted the black shroud for one of his actors during rehearsals for the upcoming “The Spirit of All Hallows Eve” show in Joliet to make her look scarier.

As director and one of the creators of the Halloween show, Moniger was leading the rehearsal for cast and crew Tuesday at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre, 201 Jefferson St. The first scene he prepared actors for tells the story of an ancient Egyptian king becoming a mummy.

“We need something to drape in front of you so you can hide your dagger,” Moniger said to one actor on stage.

“You got to have this whole assassin look.”

Audiences who attend the show, which is at 1 and 4 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday, will travel through several time periods meeting not only a mummy but a witch and a vampire.

Moniger said “The Spirit of All Hallows Eve” draws from ancient myths and stories. The show will be performed by the Bards’ Guild Theater Group.

Moniger said the show will appeal to older audiences, as well as fans of Halloween, fantasy and gaming.

“We have these stories in the show that are a play on iconic Halloween-type characters,” he said.

The show began in 2001 but had its final run in 2008 at Bicentennial Park. The president of Bolingbrook’s Theateron-the-Hill saw the production and invited the creators to bring the production to that venue in 2009.

The idea behind the show when it began was to return Halloween to its roots with jack-o’-lanterns and candy rather than gore.

The show came back to Bicentennial Park last year and Moniger said this year the cast

and crew still is focused on refining it to what it once was.

Moniger said for this year’s show he wrote the script, worked on costumes and set design.

He said the production has been responsible for set construction and costume creation. One costume shown in Tuesday’s rehearsal was for Anubis, Egyptian god of

mummification and the dead.

The actor had to use stilts and wear a giant Anubis head with gleaming eyes.

Privatization could Joliet residents speak about solve downtown bullying at D-86 meeting parking situation

By BOB OKON bokon@shawemdia.com JOLIET – City of Joliet staff plans to present Monday a proposal to privatize management of downtown parking.

The privatization plan is the result of a study initiated in early 2014. The study results also will be presented Monday, Councilman Jim McFarland said.

“The conclusion of the study is to privatize it,” he said.

The study will be presented at the 4 p.m. meeting of the Joliet City Council Public Service Committee, which McFarland chairs.

He said he has not seen the study or the proposal to privatize. But he has questions concerning the potential impact, including whether a private company would need to raise parking rates to generate profit.

“There are a lot of questions that need to be answered, in my opinion, before we say, ‘Let’s give this management company the rights to operate our parking decks and parking downtown,’ ” McFarland said.

From what he hears, McFarland said, the study recommends keeping the unpopular street-side parking meters.

The meters, parking decks and commuter lots all would be run by a private management company.

City Manager Jim Hock could not be reached Wednesday to comment on the parking privatization proposal.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the proposal was being creat-

ed as a potential budget-cutting measure.

“We’re looking to save money,” O’Dekirk said.

“We’re looking all over.”

O’Dekirk said the proposal will not go to the full City Council for a final vote next week, but was being presented for review by the Public Service Committee.

McFarland, however, said he has heard staff could be recommending a specific company to take over parking management.

Turning the city’s parking over to a private company is an idea that has been considered before, although it has never reached a point where the City Council was asked to vote on a contract.

Privatization has been viewed as one way to maintain and improve downtown parking decks. It also has been seen as a way to equip the decks with machines that can take debit and credit cards.

Parking in the decks can be paid for only with cash now, although the price is relatively low at 50 cents an hour.

While rates may be low, business owners frequently say paying for parking is a deterrent to bringing customers downtown.

McFarland said he hears from restaurant owners who say customers tire of the need to leave the table to feed a meter for fear their time is running out.

The study surveyed downtown business owners, while also analyzing the numbers of spaces available, revenues generated by parking and the job the city does managing its parking operations.

JOLIET – Several residents and members of local anti-bullying group pushed Joliet Public Schools District 86 officials during public comment at a board meeting to resolve bullying and document incidents more.

One resident, Robert Hernandez, said at Wednesday’s board meeting bullying is a serious issue nationwide and he wanted to see the Board of School Inspectors address it.

He said if they ignored students who complain about being bullied and Learners For Justice – an anti-bullying organization – he promised to “work this community up.”

“If you turn your backs on them, I will excite this community. … We will make this board listen. Make this board take action,” Hernandez said.

Since November 2014, Joliet nonprofit organization Learners For Justice – led by former District 86 student Oscar Cuevas – has worked on addressing anti-bullying efforts in District 86. Cuevas said several students have spoken to him about teachers not reporting bullying incidents. However, district officials said they are not aware of that occurring at the schools.

Cuevas came to Wednesday’s meeting with several youths who spoke about bullying. One of them was District 86 student Anthony Garcia, who said he’s been bullied and the “teachers are not handling it and not reporting it to the advisers.”

Another resident, Alicia Morales, who also is a Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees member, said bullying is a “real epidemic” that negatively impacts students’ ability to learn. She said students are perceiving “that teachers and staff have little control or don’t care about them.”

She said district officials need to work collectively with the community to resolve bullying.

“We need to see results.

As a member of this community, I’m here to ask for your continued support,” Morales

said.

Jeremy Poch, a Gompers Junior High teacher, said at the meeting teachers are handling bullying. He said teachers constantly are monitoring students in the hallways and they take mandated training on bullying, including bullying that leads to suicide.

“I feel the teachers are doing their part to monitor bullying,” Poch said.

District officials have implemented several initiatives to reduce bullying in the past, including a hotline. If students have an issue with bullying, they can use the hotline to contact a teacher, principal or other district staff. The principal conducts an investigation and reports the outcome.

Board inspectors had no comment after residents had spoken. One resident then spoke at the podium saying he was disappointed they didn’t ask for information from the residents to follow up on.

Board inspector Jeffrey Pritz said they had the contact information of those who spoke and they plan to contact them individually.

“Most definitely this is a very serious issue … it is definitely a very serious issue to address,” he said.

The driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to ISP. The investigation into the accident is pending.

LOCAL BRIEFS Lanes closed on Larkin because of gas leak

JOLIET – Lanes on Larkin Avenue in Joliet were reopened about 4 p.m. Wednesday after a gas leak led to traffic being diverted most of the day away from the intersection with McDonough Street.

A city work crew hit a gas line about 9:25 a.m. while working on a project in front of the Sam’s Club store, city officials said.

At one point all lanes on Larkin in front of the shopping center were shut down. Southbound traffic on Larkin was redirected through the Sam’s Club parking lot to McDonough Street.

Police were stationed at several spots to direct traffic until lanes were reopened.

Nicor Gas crews repaired the leak, and lanes were opened again by about 4 p.m., police

said. At that time, however, a truck had overturned on Interstate 80, which created more traffic delays as vehicles exited at Larkin because of backups on the interstate.

Police seek witnesses to Romeoville crash

ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Police Department is seeking to interview witnesses to a hit-and-run accident that occurred Oct. 7.

The crash occurred about 3:49 p.m. at Weber Road and Highpoint Drive.

Flynn wrote that because those rules were tossed out, that left the plaintiffs only “with a claim for damages for past conduct.”

CHICAGO – A Cook County judge last week dismissed a 2011 lawsuit brought by the city of Chicago and the village of Skokie accusing Channahon, Kankakee and a number of client companies of wrongful diversion of sales tax dollars.

The lawsuit had alleged the companies would route Chicago-area sales through satellite offices in Kankakee and Channahon with lower sales tax rates, siphoning tens of millions of dollars from city and suburban taxing districts.

Those municipalities would offer partial tax-rebate abatements to the companies in exchange for the offices located there.

In a 20-page opinion issued Friday, Cook County Judge Peter Flynn wrote that Chicago’s attempt to seek relief from Channahon and Kankakee is outside of the city’s purview.

Rather, authority to pursue the claims lies with the Illinois Department of Revenue, “which has primary jurisdiction over use tax redistribution claims such as these,” Flynn wrote.

Local experts, teachers to weigh in at Energy Summit

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – With the newest science standards being taught in classrooms statewide, environmental educator Joan O’Keefe hopes to “start a dialogue” with local educators and school administrators about how to incorporate hands-on learning about energy in the classroom.

“There’s about 170 public schools. Thirty private schools. That’s 200 schools that we can make a huge impression on,” said O’Keefe, who works within the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division.

That dialogue starts Tuesday when the Will County Land Use Department hosts its first-ever Energy Summit designed for teachers, maintenance staff, administrators and school board members.

Will County-based schools personnel are welcome to attend the summit next week from 6 to 8 p.m. at William E. Young School in Homer Glen.

With the Next Generation Science Standards, students from kindergarten through 12th grade will be taught topics such as energy, engineering and how human energy use impacts the Earth’s climate.

The new guidelines not only signal a shift in the classroom, but a shift in the way O’Keefe’s department divi-

sion shapes its education component. That’s why O’Keefe is hosting the summit.

“The main thrust since the very beginning [of the division] was waste reduction and recycling. That’s still important. But energy is now written into the [Next Generation Science Standards],” O’Keefe said.

O’Keefe said administrators and educators will learn about grant opportunities for solar panel installations, cost savings for switching to LED lighting, and how Lockport Township High School’s East Campus gained its EnergyStar rating. CommonWealth Edison will talk about the how the utility offers free energy assessments for schools.

Other local experts will

be sharing tips and information about energy efficiency.

Teachers will showcase how to offer hands-on lesson plan ideas, and talk about information about geothermal energy and lighting deficiencies. An ecologist will talk about how planting shrubs and trees on school grounds can improve energy efficiency.

Grant funding typically available through a state program for clean energy and solar panel installations are tied up in the state’s budget impasse, O’Keefe said.

The registration fee is $10, and the event will qualify for two professional development hours.

Plainfield School D-202 OKs administration changes

Bettis was one of many who were approved into new administrator positions for the 2015-16 school year. District officials said they could not provide additional details regarding the agreement as it was a personnel issue.

Schmidt in the role and first worked for District 202 as a special education teacher for one year in 2004 at Ridge Elementary School, district officials said.

Replacing Bettis on a temporary basis will be Sheila Thorse, who is a retired teacher and administrator, Hernandez wrote in the email. He wrote she has about 35 years of educational experience.

She has worked for school districts in Villa Park, Elmhurst and Wheaton. She also has worked for the College of DuPage.

“She will act as an interim assistant principal at Bonnie McBeth Learning Center until we can fill that position permanently later this year,” Hernandez wrote.

The board also approved 21 certified and 25 non-certified staff positions for many departments and schools at Tuesday’s meeting.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 board members approved several administrative changes Tuesday.

At the board meeting, members unanimously approved the performance-based administrator contract and retirement agreement between the school district and Raymond Epperson, principal at Plainfield North High School. Epperson is planning to retire after next year.

“Ray has successfully served as both an elementary and high school principal,” District 202 spokesman Tom Hernandez wrote in an email.

He wrote Epperson was a principal for Liberty Elementary School for four years and principal for North high school for six years.

The board also approved the resignation agreement and

STATE BRIEFS Comptroller: Budget impasse delays pension payment schedule

CHICAGO – Comptroller Leslie Munger says the budget impasse means next month’s $560 million payment to Illinois’ pension system will be delayed.

She told reporters Wednesday at a news conference that retirees still will receive benefit checks as scheduled. But the impasse has led to an immediate cash shortage, altering the way her office will dole out payments to the system.

Comptrollers have used different schedules to meet what’s due each year. Munger says she continued a monthly approach used by her predecessor.

Legislative Democrats and Gov. Bruce Rauner are at a stalemate over a spending plan for the July 1 fiscal year.

However, money is still being allocated through state laws and consent decrees at last year’s rates. Her office says it hopes to catch up when additional revenue comes in.

Payment delays for lottery winners of more than $600

CHICAGO – People who win more than $600 in the Illinois Lottery won’t get their money right away because of the ongoing state budget impasse, officials announced Wednesday.

Last month, the Illinois comptroller’s office announced that without a budget for the July 1 fiscal year, the agency didn’t have the authority to write checks of more than $25,000, and payments would be delayed. Lottery officials now say they anticipate that on Thursday, the agency’s check-writing account will be exhausted and there is no legal authority to replenish it.

“Once a budget is passed in Springfield, all outstanding claims will be paid,” according to the statement.

Two lottery winners have filed a federal lawsuit against the Illinois Lottery for stopping payouts of prizes above $25,000 because of the budget impasse.

Proposed Renewal of the Clean Air Act Permit Program Permit PQ Corporation in Joliet PQ Corporation has requested that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) renew the Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) permit regulating air emissions from its facility located at 101 Ingalls Avenue in Joliet. The facility manufactures sodium silicate and products derived from sodium silicate. Based on its review of the application, the Illinois EPA has made a preliminary determination that the application meets the standards for issuance and has prepared a draft permit for public review.

The Illinois EPA is accepting comments on the draft permit. Comments must be postmarked by midnight November 14, 2015. If sufficient interest is expressed in the draft permit, a hearing or other informational meeting may be held. The permit contains T1 conditions that are revised by this application in section 4.4.2. The permit contains no T1 conditions that are being newly established by this application.

KATHLEEN E. VANDUYNE Kathleen E. VanDuyne, age 69, of Coal City, passed away Tuesday evening October 13, 2015 at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Born June 15, 1946 in Joliet, Kathleen Ellen was a daughter of the late Fred and Nelle J. (Spiers) Kociss. She was raised in Coal City; graduated from St. Francis Academy with the class of 1964; went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College, and later her Master’s degree from St. Xavier University. On August 23, 1969, Kathy married Francis Jay VanDuyne, Jr. in Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, and together they raised their family in Coal City.

Mrs. VanDuyne taught in the Coal City Community School District #1 for 22 years, predominantly first grade, and continued to volunteer with the school district following her retirement.

She was an active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and participated in the bell choir. Kathy was also a member of Illinois Retired Teachers and the Coal City Junior Women’s Club, where she served as past president.

Kathy enjoyed traveling and taking

trips with the Mazon State Bank.

She also took pleasure in gardening, her flowers and reading. Kathy was an accomplished pianist and cook, and will be most remembered as the heart of her family. She cherished her grandchildren and was a devoted grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Jay; daughter, Bridgette (Phil) Hertz of Mequon, Wisconsin; two sons, Eric VanDuyne (Kim Mesecher-Peters) of Gurnee and Craig (Meagan) VanDuyne of Diamond; six grandchildren, Allison and Marissa Hertz and Gavin, Gabrielle, Dane and Darcy VanDuyne; her mother-in-law, Kathryn VanDuyne of Coal City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Neil Trotter of Coal City, Diane (Bill) Waite of Oakland, California, Kathleen (Kevin) Manske of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Philip (Kathleen) VanDuyne of Roselle; numerous nieces and nephews including Dr. Benjamin Trotter and Nicholas Trotter, and one cousin Nancy (Chet) Skowronski of Braidwood.

Born July 3, 1921, in Morris, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Nellie (Rudolph) Kennedy.

Frances was raised and educated in Morris and graduated from Morris High School with the Class of 1939.

She obtained her nursing degree and worked as a nurse at Cook County Hospital until 1946 when she moved to Morris. She married Elmo Younger on January 9 , 1946. They made their home in Morris.

Frances was a homemaker and loved to bake and to travel with her family on educational trips.

She is survived by her husband; three children, Cheryl (Randal) Carter of Charlotte, NC, Ray (Michele) Younger of Coal City, and Densie (Vicky) Younger of Fernandina Beach, FL; four grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and Jack Kennedy.

Hastert deadline passes, suggesting plea deal may be near

CHICAGO – A deadline for Dennis Hastert’s legal team to file pretrial paperwork passed with nothing new submitted to the court, suggesting the former House speaker could be close to a plea deal that would avert a trial and keep potentially embarrassing details secret, legal experts said Wednesday.

Prosecutors and attorneys for the Illinois Republican disclosed at a hearing last month that they are negotiating a possible deal.

The presiding judge in Chicago has said he expected an update on those talks by the next hearing, which is scheduled for Thursday.

“In a complicated case like this, you’d expect significant pretrial motions,” said Darryl Goldberg, a Chicago-based lawyer. “That there were none sends the signal ... that this will all be resolved short of a trial.”

A May indictment alleges the 73-year-old agreed to pay $3.5 million to an “Individual A” to hide unspecified past wrongdoing. The Associated Press and other media, citing anonymous sources, have reported that the payments were meant to conceal claims of sexual misconduct decades ago.

Prospective speakers multiply in House as all wait on Ryan

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Every day another Republican lawmaker seems to wake up and decide that he – and in at least one case, she – might make a pretty good speaker of the House.

The profusion of potential candidates, now approaching double digits, is happening even with all attention focused on Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the former GOP vice presidential nominee widely seen as the best person for the job.

Ryan, who has made clear he does not want to be speaker, is home in Janesville, Wisconsin, thinking it over anyway under pressure from top party leaders. And with Congress out of session for a weeklong recess, Capitol Hill has fallen quiet after a series of wild days during which Speaker John Boehner shocked the House by announcing his planned resignation, and Boehner’s heir apparent, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, abruptly

took himself out of the running.

The stunning developments left a leadership vacuum at the pinnacle of Congress. Now into it are stepping a growing number of Republican lawmakers from around the country, some relative newcomers, others with experience to point to, united by a chance to lunge at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become speaker of the U.S. House, second-in-line to the presidency.

Why any of them would want a job that defeated the current occupant and scared off his No. 2 is another question. The daunting rift between establishment-minded lawmakers and the hard-line conservatives who pushed Boehner to the exits shows no sign of dissipating, and threatens to complicate life for whoever next occupies the speaker’s chair. Congress also faces a series of formidable tasks over the next several months, including increasing the federal borrowing limit to

avoid a default and paying the government’s bills to stave off a shutdown.

Nevertheless, the wannabe speakers are multiplying.

“I am humbled to have my name mentioned as a potential candidate, and I am considering the pursuit of the speakership in response to those requests,” Rep. Bill Flores, R-Texas, wrote in a letter to fellow House members Wednesday. “If we all spend enough time on our knees praying for each other, we can heal our divisions and truly work together to restore America to the ‘Shining City on a Hill’ that President Reagan challenged us to become.”

Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kansas, released a statement observing: “I know every member of the House is looking for the right person. If I can serve the American people and the conservative movement in any way, sign me up. However, a couple weeks ago I was floated as a presidential candidate, so I might be pretty busy.”

Warriors bounce back with a win

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The best thing a team can do after dropping a tough conference showdown is to learn from it, put it behind it and bounce back in its next contest.

And that’s just what Lincoln-Way West’s girls volleyball team did Wednesday against Andrew after it suffered its first league loss at Bradley-Bourbonnais the day before.

After pulling away from the Thunderbolts in the late stages of the opener, the Warriors rolled in the finale to claim a 25-20, 25-11 SouthWest Suburban Conference Red victory.

West, which improved to 20-9 overall and 4-1 in the conference, still has a chance to earn a share of the SWSC Red title if Lincoln-Way North beats the Boilermakers today, and then the Warriors can knock off the visiting Phoenix in next Thursday’s

regular-season finale.

But either way, coach Rory Olson’s Warriors are setting their sights on trying to advance to their own Class 3A sectional tournament, where they’re seeded fourth behind Providence Catholic, Joliet Catholic Academy and Illiana Christian.

“We just came up short last night,” Olson said. “The chemistry was a little bit off and we weren’t consistent.

We tell the kids that’s what you take from a loss. It’s

about how you put that into your next match and postseason play, that’s what really counts. We look forward to the end of the season since every game and practice has been preparing us for that.

“This is a hard-working group that works really well together and has great chemistry. We get great leadership from our four senior captains, who set the bar high at practice every day. Each of my four seniors brings something different to the

table and they each have a different kind of leadership.

It connects with our younger players, so it’s a nice mix.”

West’s senior captains are Katie Davis, Olivia DeGroot, Jackie Moore and Brooke Robbins.

“We’ve definitely improved from our first game this year and have gotten more consistent,” said Davis, who had 16 assists and four

IHSA STATE GOLF FINALS

Two teams, six individuals ready for state

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com This weekend’s IHSA finals looked like they might be a fitting reward for several area senior golfers, but instead, some young players with bright futures will get the chance to shine.

Only one of the six individual qualifiers and four of the 12 members of the two advancing teams are seniors. Just two individuals and four team members have competed at state.

Providence Catholic’s boys will be back in the Class 3A meet for the second straight year while Lemont’s boys will be doing the same thing in Class 2A. Providence junior Alyssa Gromala also will be making her third state trip while Morris senior Nick McPherson returns for his second straight appearance.

The other four area qualifiers all will be headed downstate for the first time. That includes two freshmen in the Class AA girls meet, Lincoln-Way Central’s Brianna Bolden and Lemont’s Maggie

state squad and Costello became his school’s third medalist when he took sixth place.

Beside those two, the Celtics went with a lineup of seniors Ryan Miller and Jack Walsh, junior Gino Sanfilipo and sophomore Tyler Roat at both the sectional and regional.

Lemont’s boys continued their streak of advancing to state in each year that they’ve been in Class 2A. The Indians are making their seventh state trip in 10 years and will be looking for their fourth medalist, including the first since 2011.

Sophomore Raymond Sullivan and senior Matt Retzke were on last year’s Lemont state squad. Others who competed in the sectional and regional are senior Charlie Cannon, juniors Mike Durkin and Jack Lund and sophomores Matt Grasman and Jack Kramer.

McPherson hopes to become Morris’ first medalist since 1961. Joliet Catholic has had six medal winners, but only one since 1975, which came in 2009 and Minooka nev-

er has had an all-stater in boys or girls golf.

Gromala hopes to become Providence’s third medalist and first since 1994. Lemont has had only one medalist, in 1997, while Lincoln-Way Central is seeking its first medal winner in the sport.

The two individuals who battled for medalist honors at the Neuqua Valley Sectional also live in the area but attend schools in other communities.

Benet Academy freshman Lauren Beaudreau, who won a playoff for the sectional tittle, lives in Lemont. She hopes to become her school’s second medalist and first since 1999.

And Neuqua Valley senior Jessica Yuen, who lives in Bolingbrook, hopes to conclude her successful prep career by making some more history.

Yuen is the two-time defending state champion and was the runner-up as a freshman. She hopes to become the first three-time state champion and the initial large-school performer to finish in the topfour for four straight seasons.

Terry D’Arcy of D’Arcy Motors in Joliet will donate $100 to local charities for every point scored.

Central will wear white jerseys, South will wear blue, and both will have pink numbers.

“They will line up together for the National Anthem,” Kohl said. “A Central kid, then a South kid, alternating in the line.

“We want to get people to come together as a community. Every once in a while, someone out there needs help, and we want to provide it.”

“Jeff was here at Central his freshman year, and I got to know him then,” Stephens said of Kohl. “He is a good kid with great intentions. This is his brainchild. He has a vision for what is going to be a great cause.

JOLIET NATIVE MAKES THE CALL

Carlson has been a major league umpire for 15 years now. If you’re a veteran reader of the Herald-News, you probably remember him writing the “Ask the Ump” column in the Herald-News way back when.

The Carlsons moved to Florida several years ago, and we miss seeing him here in the offseason. But he always will be one of us.

If we can’t have a local player or two involved in the postseason, having an umpire isn’t bad.

ers beat the Mets, 3-1, on Tuesday night and will play Game 5 of their division series Thursday in Los Angeles.

The winner hosts the Cubs on Saturday in the opener of Chicago’s first NLCS since 2003.

“This obviously right now is very rewarding, but we have a couple more series and hopefully we can celebrate like this two more times,” Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant said.

The Cubs had a string of five consecutive losing seasons before they went 97-65 this year. But it was only good enough for third in the competitive NL Central, with St. Louis winning a major leaguebest 100 games and Pittsburgh

Bushrod returns to practice after Week 2 concussion

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Bears left tackle Jermon Bushrod returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion in the Week 2 loss to the Cardinals.

“We’re taking it a day at a time,” Bushrod said about his availability for Sunday. “I was able to get out there, do some things today, I felt good, running around, taking some sets, putting my hands on people, just seeing how things are feeling. I’m encouraged right now, but we’re not going to push anything because I don’t real-

ly look forward to having any more setbacks.”

Bushrod, who was limited in practice, dealt with a back injury in the offseason and preseason and has a shoulder injury, too, but the concussion is what kept him on the sideline for three games. He did discuss the concern that comes with having a concussion.

“At the end of the day, I know what I signed up for.

No one’s pushing me to be out here. I want to be out here because I love this game,” he said. “I’ve been playing this game for 20 years. I love doing it. “… You have to really sit

back and take care of yourself and realize that your brain and your head is nothing to play with. You just want to do everything you can to make sure that you’re healthy now and in the long-term as well.”

Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) also participated in the portion open to the media but was limited. Josh Bellamy (groin), Patrick Omameh (ankle), Ego Ferguson (knee), Jeremiah Ratliff (ankle), Will Sutton (elbow) and Pernell McPhee (shoulder) were all limited.

Inside linebacker depth: The Bears brought undrafted rookie Jonathan Anderson up from the practice squad to give Vic Fangio more options at inside linebacker, assuming they have to replace McClellin for at least a game.

“Right now, we’re sifting through that. We’ve got LaRoy. We’ve got Jonathan Anderson.

We’ve got John Timu. We’ve got Lamin [Barrow]. So we’ll figure it out throughout the

week,” Fangio said. “Maybe it’ll be one guy for one or maybe it’ll be a group effort.”

Reynolds, who played the first two games of this season for the Jaguars and joined the Bears before Week 4, was the one to replace McClellin in Sunday’s win.

Big loss for Detroit: The Lions will be without outside linebacker DeAndre Levy certainly for Sunday and possibly the rest of the season. Their top tackler from a year ago will undergo surgery on his hip.

CHICAGO – When it was over, Anthony Rizzo jumped around Wrigley Field and hugged everyone in sight. The moment was in his grasp, and he was determined to hold onto it for as long as possible.

The All-Star slugger endured several seasons of losing with the Cubs before they finally got into the playoffs again, and he was more than ready to enjoy the franchise’s first appearance in the NL Championship Series in more than a decade.

“Obviously, times weren’t easy the last few years, but with all the talent we had and all the talent we were building, everyone knew that the Cubs were coming,” a drenched Rizzo said as he celebrated the Cubs’ clinching 6-4 victory over St. Louis in the NL Division Series on Tuesday, “and we’re here, and hopefully we can keep this thing going.”

Blackhawks, Bulls lose big The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – Michal Neuvirth stopped 30 shots in his second straight shutout, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-0 win over the Blackhawks on Wednesday night.

Sam Gagner, Claude Giroux and Matt Read scored to lead the Flyers to their 12th straight regular-season home victory over the Hawks.

The Flyers have not lost to the Blackhawks in Philly during the regular season since Nov. 9, 1996.

The Blackhawks beat the Flyers in the 2010 Stanley Cup Final and clinched with a Game 6 win in Philly.

Call in FBI to solve case of slain Fox Lake cop Bring in the A team.

It’s been more than a month since Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz died, shot with his own gun, and investigators seem no closer to solving the mystery of his death.

We need answers. Officer Gliniewicz’ family needs answers.

The FBI should take over this case.

From the beginning, this case has been marked with conflict among the various players.

Early on, top members of a police investigative task force met with the pathologist who did the autopsy but didn’t invite the pathologist’s boss, Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd.

The next day, task force leaders ripped Rudd via news release. Such behavior has inspired no confidence among the public.

The FBI, which is getting a new special agent in charge this month for its Chicago field office, could rise above all that and direct everyone’s attention to what matters – solving the case.

Shortly after he radioed on Sept. 1 that he was pursuing three people on foot, Gliniewicz was found dead near Route 12 in Fox Lake.

He was shot once in the front of his protective vest and once in the upper-left chest area.

Investigators said they found indications of a struggle, but tests run to see if Gliniewicz fired his gun himself were inconclusive.

Gliniewicz, 52, was near the crime scene for about 20 minutes before radioing, according to GPS data.

The scene was close enough to major roads that any perpetrators could have escaped before a police perimeter was set up.

Investigators have nine DNA samples from the crime scene and are taking DNA swabs from people, looking for matches.

So far, they have not said they found any.

Most crimes are investigated by local authorities, but there are times when it’s best to call in an agency that both has experience in investigating major crimes and no conflicts in deciding how to proceed.

Some people have suggested this is a case of suicide, a finding that co-workers of a man who by all accounts was a dedicated professional might shy away from.

We don’t know what happened. But we think the FBI has the best chance of figuring it out.

Speaking from the heart in search of a candidate I write this column with some trepidation – because it involves the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives. And, as I write, anything can happen. Is Pope Francis available? Can we make an Argentinean exception just this once if no one else wants the job?

No, no, no. Pope Francis has his own unenviable task before him, but one with eternal rewards. And despite his largely warm and moving welcome before the joint session of Congress – a first for a pope – last month, I’m not drafting him for the job. But in a somewhat epic rant on Twitter, an up-and-comer on the other side of the Capitol had a brilliant idea. Freshman senator from Nebraska Ben Sasse tried to recruit Arthur C. Brooks for speaker.

Sasse wrote some quite true things of which we need to be reminded: “Truly American leadership starts with politicians admitting that politics and DC are not the center of national life. A vibrant citizenry is.”

Brooks, if you don’t know him, is the president of the right-leaning think tank the American Enterprise Institute. And when he was selected for that job, he was a quite unusual choice.

As he tells the story in his new book, “The Conservative Heart”: “I didn’t start out as a conservative.

A great way to serve Former Illinois State Police officer opens Catholic bookstore in Mokena

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Running a Catholic bookstore is similar to being an evidence custodian with the Illinois State Police, according to Karla Ohner.

When working for the Illinois State Police, Ohner, of New Lenox, said she managed thousands of evidence pieces. As co-proprietor for Two Hearts Catholic Gifts & Books in Mokena, Ohner now accounts for thousands of merchandise items.

“God has such a sense of humor,” Ohner said.

Opening the store in March was the realization of a decades-long dream that started when Ohner’s son, Brian Kraemer, now 24, attended school at Noonan Academy in Mokena, an independently run Catholic school.

“I try to carry a little of something for everybody – even people who are not super-religious,” Ohner said.

Ohner recalled a woman who stopped in by accident – before the Two Hearts sign was installed. As the customer looked around, she talked to Ohner about having fallen away from her Catholic faith and having a brother who is a priest.

“She’s been back four or five times,” Ohner said, “and we’re now friends.”

Some people worry getting dental X-rays can cause cancer or birth defects. Today’s dental X-ray machines emit very low levels of radiation.

They narrowly focus the X-ray beam so it passes through only your jaw and teeth. And they work fast. These advances all reduce the radiation exposure.

Increasingly, dentists are using digital dental X-rays. These devices store images in electronic files rather than on film.

The high-resolution pictures require as little as 10 percent of the amount of radiation needed to create a traditional X-ray image.

Still, as a precaution, your dentist should cover your body with a lead apron when taking X-rays. This prevents up to 94 percent of the radiation from reaching your chest, abdomen and reproductive organs.

That virtually eliminates the risk of birth defects, and your risk of cancer – except for your thyroid gland.

To shield your thyroid gland, which is located in the front of your neck, you also should wear a lead collar while the X-rays are being taken.

Dear Abby: My son, a widower with two boys, ages 6 and 9, has just informed me his 33-year-old girlfriend, “Karen,” is pregnant and due in five months. He started seeing her three months after his wife died, and they have been an item for eight months. She has been staying at his house every weekend, and plans to move in with him soon.

Karen has never been married and has no children, so she will become a stepmom and a new mom in a short period of time. Neither my son nor Karen seems to realize how difficult it will be to bring a stepparent into this situation, especially with a new baby on the way. One of the boys will have to give up his bedroom when the baby arrives. I’m concerned the boys will be overwhelmed by this, when they have not yet been able to effectively deal with the death of their mother.

I think this relationship has moved too fast and they are clueless about how all this will affect the boys. My son has told me I need to “get over it, it’s his life and his kids.” Is there anything I can do to help the boys process all of this and adjust to the new situation? – Wise Lady In The South Dear Wise Lady: Nowhere in

your letter have you mentioned the boys are depressed or acting out. They probably like Karen or the relationship wouldn’t have lasted as long as it has.

It appears that in trying to be helpful you might have come across as negative or judgmental. If that’s true, apologize to your son and suggest if the adjustment becomes difficult for his boys, a family therapist could help to nip any problems in the bud.

Then cross your fingers and hope it isn’t necessary.

Because of my reaction and for the health of my children, I don’t want to attend. (When we get home we immediately have to shower and launder our clothing to get rid of the smell.)

My husband is adamant we should attend and bring the kids. He was raised around smoking and doesn’t see what the “big deal” is.

think so. Much as you might like, you can’t raise your children in a bubble. I would hate to see you isolate your children from their aunts, uncles, cousins and any grandparents who are still alive during their once-a-year holiday celebration.

If you would prefer not to attend because you can’t stand the smell of the smoke, stay home. But do not prevent your children from knowing the family. Assuming they don’t have health issues, one evening of exposure to cigarette smoke shouldn’t be harmful.
