Rec manager receives new contract Village Board hears first read of tax levy

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The Shorewood head of parks and recreation received a new contract Tuesday.

The Village Board unanimously voted to approve a renewable contract for Denise Schmidt, the Denise parks, business Schmidt and recreation planner.

Schmidt’s contract will pay her $76,875 this year – a maximum 2.5 percent performance increase from her

$75,000 yearly compensation – Schmidt said.

Schmidt heads the parks and recreation department and plans many of the community events. Her management has led to an increase in programming and attendance at events.

“This is a contracted position,” Schmidt said. “So it does not include benefits and I’m not part of the village’s insurance program.”

But Schmidt said she still was very much a part of the village’s staff.

“When you come to it, I’m regarded and regard myself as a part of the family,” she said.

Schmidt said the contract creates a mechanism that ties her performance to her job. It ensures she receives a raise every year based on her performance, similar to other employee groups in the village.

Schmidt came to the village two years ago into a new posi-

tion created by the village, she said. She was on a one-year agreement that was renewed last year.

Tax levy

Trustees also heard a first reading of the tax levy for the 2015-16 year.

Finance Director Anne Burkholder said the planned tax levy is $1,227,683.13, a 1.08 percent increase over the 2014 tax extension at $1,214,530.16.

The village turned into a home rule community after a referendum passed in the Spring election, removing restrictions on the village to limit the tax levy rate, Burkholder said.

Because the home rule measure was specifically passed to raise the village’s total sales tax rate, the village already expressed interest in not using the new status to levy additional taxes.

Sanitary district may have to be recreated to be eliminated

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Greenfield Sanitary District may have to be revived to be abolished.

At least that’s the plan as the city of Joliet tries to settle its $819,000 claim with two local sanitary districts.

Joliet sent in June notices to the Greenfield and South Ridgewood sanitary districts saying they owed $197,000 and $622,000 respectively for sewage treatment provided by the city for the past few years.

The matter has not been resolved, and Joliet plans to take over the two sanitary districts and begin billing customers directly.

City officials are negotiating with an attorney for the South Ridgewood Sanitary District, which has a board that collects bills.

The problem in Greenfield, a community of about 100 homes just east of Joliet, is that no one has been on the

district board for years, and Joliet needs someone to surrender the district to the city.

“The board has to apply to dissolve,” Joliet City Attorney Martin Shanahan said.

“But since there is no board, a board has to be appointed.”

The city says it has not received any payment from Greenfield since 2009, and that may have been the last time anyone living in the district was billed. It’s also unclear when was the last time any board existed to oversee the sanitary district, but it’s obvious there is no board now.

“There is no clear, set procedure for what is happening here,” Shanahan said. “There is no set procedure for when a board no longer exists.”

But since Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. has the authority to appoint a board for the Greenfield Sanitary District, the city wants Walsh to appoint members to dissolve the district.

City and county officials are

scheduled to meet next week to work out details of the plan.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the county executive, said it is difficult to find people willing to serve on sanitary district boards. But, he said, “We’re going to find some folks who live in that district and work with the city to resolve this.”

“We’ve got to do something,” Palmer said. “The city of Joliet can’t provide the service for free.”

That’s what some Joliet City Council members have been saying, especially since they have been asked to consider a hike in water and sewer rates on Joliet residents.

“Sewer service is still going to these folks, and they’re not paying for it,” Councilman Jim McFarland said at a recent City Council meeting, urging staff to move ahead with the takeover. “I don’t understand why this wasn’t done sooner, because we’re losing money every day.”

the proposed levy level with last year’s tax extension with the exception of the police pension piece,” Burkholder said, noting that the village will pay $600,000 from the 2014 extended amount of $586,847.03 to the police pension fund, more than the required contribution of $524,952.

Mayor Rick Chapman said the additional contribution plans for an aging police force whose officers may start retiring sooner more often.

“I think that’s a good plan,” Trustee Dan Anderson said.

The tax levy is scheduled to go before the board for a second read and approval Nov. 10.

As part of the levy, the village passed on first read the tax abatements of the three outstanding general obligation bonds, the Series 2009 $4.1 million bonds, Series 2010 $620,000 bonds and Series 2011 $4.7 million bonds.

L-Way West senior to perform with U.S. Army All-American Marching Band

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Mark Macha has a passion for music that’s led him to becoming a member of a national band along with hundreds of other top student musicians across the country.

Macha, a Lincoln-Way West High School senior, was honored Tuesday for earning his membership with the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. He was nominated by his teacher, Cary Ruklic, West band director and music department chair, to become a member and he had to audition for it.

“I’m really excited to be able to play among the high schools like this that care and work the same way I do,” Macha said. “It’s really incredible and exciting.”

The U.S. Army All-American Marching Band performs at halftime of the nationally broadcast U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Only 125 high school band members in the U.S. are chosen to become a member of the national band.

They are chosen not just for strong musical skills, but also possessing similar characteristics of Army soldiers, such as loyalty, integrity and personal courage.

Ruklic said he was proud of Macha.

“He’s a fantastic student and a great musician,” he said.

When Macha first attended West four years ago, he had an “unusually high level” of musical talent, Ruklic said.

“Often when that happens, the students kind of flatline.

That’s not the case at all with Mark. He continues to grow and mature exponentially over the past four years,” he said.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Retired Joliet Police Chief Mike Trafton has been selected as the new chief executive officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties.

He will replace Lisa Morel Las, who left in August to take another job.

Trafton, who retired from the Joliet police force three years ago with 28 years of experience under his belt, said Tuesday he applied for the job as a chance to give back to the community.

“After being in the police force for 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand what happens to kids when they don’t have parents or role models,” Trafton said.

The organization is an area franchise of the national outfit, Big Brothers Big Sisters, that helps at-risk children by forming a bond between them and adult mentors.

Trafton will make an annual salary of $70,000. His first

Trafton began mentoring as a big brother at BBBS last year. Although Big Brothers

Big Sisters has many volunteers, most are women. He said he hopes to reach out to the community to drive more

male role models into the mentoring programs.

Trafton is no stranger to nonprofit agencies, according

to a news release from BBBS. He is an active board member for the Forest Park Community Center and the Joliet Park Foundation, while serving on numerous other Will County area nonprofit agencies in the past. Trafton is married to Melissa, and they have three daughters, Katie, Alexandria and Nicole, according to the release.

The agency’s CEO position had been vacant since late August, when Las left to take the executive director position at the Will County Child Advocacy Center. BBBS Finance Director Beth Kasper has been interim CEO during the vacancy.

BBBS Board Chairman Pat Schumacher said Trafton is a perfect fit for BBBS. Much of Trafton’s job as CEO will consist of raising funds for the programs by making connections with businesses and the community, Schumacher said.

“Mike stood out. He’s wellknown in the community, with a passion for the mission of the agency,” Schumacher said.

Tax levies spotlighted at finance committee meeting

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board is scheduled during its Thursday meeting to consider three tax levy options for the 2016 budget, with some board members saying more revenue is needed to fund sheriff deputies’ overtime and push major capital projects forward next year.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. last month suggested a flat levy rate in his proposed $482 million spending plan, but on Tuesday, Finance Committee Chair Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, said Walsh’s plan zeroes out a major line item for the sheriff’s department overtime budget.

“We already know there’s

going to be overtime right now,” Fricilone said.

Taxing districts’ levies are limited by the property tax cap, which allows an increase of the current levy to either the increase in the Consumer Price Index or 5 percent, whichever is less over the previous year’s extension.

With rising property values, Fricilone said the three levy resolutions up for a vote Thursday still are below 2014 levy rates, meaning whichever option the board chooses will lead to a decrease in the county’s portion of homeowners’ property tax bill.

Budget director ReShawn Howard said one option leaves the levy flat, while the second raises about $1.3 million because it includes new property.

A third option raises about $2.7 million and includes new property and CPI. Finance Committee member Ray Tuminello said it’s “irresponsible” not to build overtime into the budget for the sheriff’s department when the county executive’s office has historically budgeted for it in the past.

“There’s no way that I am going to look at cutting any kind of service that comes out of that department, or any public safety sector, because we were irresponsible in putting zero overtime in the budget,” Tuminello said.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Walsh Sr., said after the meeting that Walsh Sr. proposed a flat levy this year because of how much he was crit-

icized last year by Republicans when he proposed a 1.5 percent levy increase with new property and CPI included. It generated $2.4 million for capital projects.

“The past attitudes of the board hasn’t been to embrace that,” Palmer said.

He pointed to last year, when a budget vote was politically divided, 13-13, with Democrats voting for the increase and Republicans voting against, forcing Walsh Sr. to cast the tie-breaking vote in favor.

“We were anticipating a similar attitude. We welcome a more collaborative board process where they’re willing to work with us to find additional revenue. But last year, it got into a heated battle,” Palmer said.

Overtime pay

Overtime pay in the Will County Sheriff’s Office was spotlighted during Tuesday’s budget discussion.

The Will County Sheriff’s Department spent $3.2 million in overtime in fiscal 2014. The department spent $3 million in fiscal year 2015, although budgeted for only $1.2 million.

Palmer told board members Tuesday overtime within the sheriff’s office has “been a problem for years, and it’s progressively gotten worse.”

Board member Jackie Traynere, D-Bolingbrook, said she would like to see staffing levels increase if it leads to a reduction in overtime costs.

The 2016 budget is set to be voted on at the County Board’s November meeting.

Joliet D-86 introduces mobile app for phones

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Information on Joliet Public Schools District 86 is now in the palms of residents’ hands.

John Armstrong, district technology and information services director, unveiled at an Oct. 7 board meeting the District 86 smartphone application that impressed district officials and Board of School Inspectors.

The application – powered

by Blackboard, Inc. – is available for free for iPhone and Android phones.

“We hope that this will really prove to be a great way of providing mobile information to the community,” Armstrong said.

Users who download the app can view district and school news in the stream section.

They can follow each school within District 86 to receive no-

tifications, as well as the Board of School Inspectors.

They also can receive notifications – for events such as school closings – and access the staff directory, as well as display information personalized to their interests. The cyberbully hotline also is available on the app, Armstrong said.

Parents and students can view grades, assignments, attendance and contact information.

“We tried to put in things parents would want at their fingertips,” Armstrong said.

Board inspector Quinn Adamowski said at the last board meeting he downloaded the application and played around with it for a half hour.

“It’s real responsive and a lot of good information in there,” he said, and later added, “I can definitely see all kinds of possibilities moving forward.”

The app also includes links

to the district’s Facebook and Twitter pages, Armstrong said.

Under settings, users can select more than 50 languages.

Armstrong said his staff did a soft launch several weeks ago and eventually the goal will be to have building administrators make their own changes.

“We’re not quite there,” he said.

District 86 is one of two major public school districts in Will County that makes use of a smartphone app. Plainfield School District 202 introduced an app in May that provides district information to residents.

Property settlement agreement for Nelson Road extension reached NEW LENOX – After years of failed negotiations and a condemnation lawsuit, the village of New Lenox has reached a settlement agreement to acquire the last piece of property necessary to extend and realign Nelson Road between West Haven Avenue and West Illinois Highway.

Board trustees Monday night approved a property dedication agreement with Pentagon Properties, PDV, LLC and PTV, LLC to acquire the 18.02 acres of farmland.

The property is located south of West Haven Avenue, east of Gougar Road and west of the Aerohaven Subdivision.

Nelson Road ends at West Haven Avenue, with a small portion running south from the west boundary of Joliet Highway and ending well north of West Illinois Highway.

The village has planned a

1.2-mile extension of Nelson Road, according to Village Administrator Kurt Carroll. One mile is over this property and 0.2 miles will be over property purchased earlier this year for $35,000 from another owner.

According to the settlement agreement, in exchange for the property Pentagon – which has previously received approval from the village for its preliminary plans for Falcon Ridge Subdivision on the site – will not be liable for future recapture fees for the construction costs of the road. The village also agrees to complete construction within 24 months of the property transfer.

The village also agrees to extend its approval of Pentagon’s preliminary plans for Falcon Ridge Subdivision for five years starting from when construction will commence.

The agreement also gives the village temporary easement over an additional 7.4 acres for dirt storage and storm

water retention facilities for the period of construction and the following two years.

The village board has tried to come to an agreement with the landowners in the last four years, Carroll said.

In his State of the Village address in September 2014, Mayor Tim Baldermann said the extension was necessary for north-south travel in town and to reroute traffic traveling through residential areas.

In the beginning of this year, exerting its power of eminent domain, following an ordinance passed by the board in July 2014, the village started condemnation proceedings in order to acquire the necessary land.

With an agreement finally in place, engineering will begin this winter and construction will most likely start in the spring, Carroll said.

The village hopes to have the new road open by next fall, he said.

How do you treat arthritis in your feet?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis.

It affects about half of all arthritis sufferers.

When it strikes the feet, it can be particularly distressing. Although there is little soft tissue swelling, joints often become enlarged, stiff and painful. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed for the pain, and certain exercises can relieve some of the pressure by strengthening muscles around the joints.

Waling and rolling an empty soft drink bottle under the foot are often useful techniques.

Your doctor may also perform ultrasound or heat treatments. For more advanced, debilitating cases, surgery may be recommended to remove bony particles or replace the joint with an artificial implant.

Lawyer-turned-defendant providence has bond increased again CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A jailed Homer Glen attorney lost his bond reduction Tuesday after reportedly failing to obey the judge.

Robert W. Gold-Smith, who is representing himself on charges he tried to hire someone to kill his former Robert W. wife, was given Gold-Smith a lower bond amount Thursday by Judge Daniel Rozak. “No contact” with his former spouse was a condition of the $150,000 bond – which initially had been set at $350,000.

But on Friday, Will County jail staff intercepted a 14-page letter Gold-Smith was mailing

to his former wife, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Regis said.

“It took him less than 24 hours [after the hearing] to violate conditions,” Regis told Rozak.

Rozak reinstated the $350,000 bond. Gold-Smith did not object.

In November 2010, GoldSmith’s then-wife sought an order of protection after he grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the face as they walked out of a courtroom, according to police. He has been in jail since March 2011 for allegedly violating that order of protection and approaching inmates to have her killed.

Last month, Gold-Smith testified former jail inmate Brian K. McDaniel whispered into the wire he was wearing, impersonating Gold-Smith, and

lied to the grand jury for leniency in his own case. Rozak refused to toss out Gold-Smith’s indictment for solicitation of murder, but noted “some issues” with the case against him and urged the attorney to utilize the public defender’s office.

After his bond was raised again Tuesday, Gold-Smith spent nearly an hour arguing his right to a speedy trial had been violated. Rozak and prosecutor Adam Capelli reviewed court records and agreed the delays were results of motions by the defense and requests for documents.

Gold-Smith also asked for copies for the criminal records of McDaniel and three other informants, and Rozak ordered prosecutors to give those to him at his next court appearance.

“They delivered about 700 [out of 1,000] tons today,” Persons said. “Because most of the other municipalities were closed, they asked if we were open.”

The village last month contracted for up to 4,800 tons of salt with Morton Salt Inc. at $62.61 a ton.

Persons also said 12 contractors picked up applications for snow plowing, noting that the applications weren’t bids.

JEROME G. KABAT Jerome G. Kabat, age 91, entered eternal life on Thursday, October 8, 2015, with his loving wife by his side.

Jerome is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Vern; loving children, Marilyn (Tom) Palmer, Rick (Brenda), and Bill (Mary Ann) Kabat; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grand-

stepson, Terrence (Terri) Korst; and her beloved second husband, Richard Korst.

Joyce retired from Argonne National Laboratory where she was a dedicated employee for many years. Joyce was a lifelong, active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet, IL. She was also a member of Slovenian Union of America (formerly Slovenian Women’s Union of America), and St. Genevieve Society of KSKJ. Joyce loved to cook and took great pride in her yard and the flowers that brought life, color, and joy. Her wishes included being an organ donor.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – An hour after pleading guilty to her role in a scheme to steer $23 million in no-bid contracts to education firms for $2.3 million in bribes and kickbacks, the former head of Chicago Public Schools apologized Tuesday to students, parents and employees, saying they deserved “much more than I gave to them.”

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors recommended that Barbara Byrd-Bennett serve 7½ years behind bars for one count of fraud. In exchange for pleading guilty to that one count, prosecutors said they will drop the 19 other fraud counts, each of which carried a maximum 20-year term.

Byrd-Bennett stepped down from the third-largest school district in the U.S. in June after word spread about a federal investigation into a contract between the district and SUPES Academy, a training academy where she once worked.

Prosecutors allege the scheme started in 2012 – the year Mayor Rahm Emanuel hired the Solon, Ohio, woman to become the district’s CEO. The indictment alleged that the owners of the two education service and training firms offered her a job and a hefty onetime payment – disguised as a lucrative signing bonus – once she left CPS. The city is looking for “further safeguards to help prevent this type of abuse from happening again,” Emanuel spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said in a statement later Tuesday.

LOUIS J. PESAVENTO Louis J. Pesavento, age 86, of Lockport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at Silver Cross Hospital as a result from injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Born in Joliet, was a lifelong Lockport resident. He owned and operated, along with his brother Len, the Roxy Lido Tavern for over 50 years.

Lou enjoyed watching all sports, but his greatest joy was attending and watching his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. He enjoyed walking, listening to jazz and spending time with his loving family.

NEAL W. SKVORC Neal W. Skvorc, 86, of New Lenox, died Oct. 12, 2015, after a dynamic life following his favorite singer Frank Sinatra’s motto: “I did it my way.” He was a master storyteller, especially when reminiscing about growing up in 1930s Chicago.

Neal was lovingly surrounded by women his entire life and cherished his daughters above all else, Diane (Jim) Lytle, Rebecca (Bill) Latham, Laurie Skvorc, Rachael (Bud) Gillman, Amy (Jeff) Carroll, Patty (Sue Dallimore) Skvorc; step-daughter, Laurie Smith and her daughters, Kim

Wisslead, Kristi Walker, and Karen Ditzler.

He enjoyed sharing his love of old movies, crooners, and cards with all of his progeny and was always up for a game of gin with anyone who would take him on, including his eleven grandchildren, Elizabeth (Dave Chavez) Lytle, Melanie (Brian Opdycke) Lytle, Deborah (Ben) Lytle-Hoover, Barry (Laura Sluis) Latham, Karin (Mike) Monahan, David (Jamie) Meskill, Carolyn (Eric) Beckman, Brian (Ashley) Gillman, Kevin Gillman, Chloe Carroll, and Simone Carroll; and nine great-grandchildren.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents, Milan and Antonia (Belak) Skvorc; his first wife, Carolyn Cole; his second wife, Patricia Campbell Skvorc; and his granddaughter, Emily Latham.

He owned and operated Willow Run Golf Course in Mokena since 1972. He loved the staff there and thought of them as his second family. For the last several years he spent his winters in Florida fishing, golfing, and entertaining all who came to visit him.

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner unveiled plans Tuesday to auction off the architecturally distinct James R. Thompson Center, which could lead to the razing of the 16-story glass-paneled building in Chicago that has housed state government for three decades.

Rauner, who declined to say how much the building is worth amid ongoing appraisals, called it an “inefficient” and “wasteful” use of space with its large indoor atrium and backlog of maintenance projects equaling roughly $100 million. He wants to move the approximately 2,200 downtown employees to other offices in the area or Springfield and put the building up for a cash sale within a year.

“We think it’s a home-run

decision in every regard,” he said at a news conference.

The building, designed by famed architect Helmut Jahn and named for a former Illinois governor, opened in 1985.

It cost the state roughly $170 million. Marked by a halfdome with pinkish-red and blue panels, the 1.2 millionsquare-foot building sticks out, particularly next to its more stately granite neighbor, City Hall.

Disrepair is evident at the building, which also has structural problems: Duct tape patches worn and stained carpets. Wiring and electricity is dated. Heating and cooling costs have soared. Rust stains a wall of a public meeting space. Noise and smells emanate from a basement food court.

WASHINGTON – The Russian military intervention to prop up Syria’s government has brought new scrutiny of the CIA’s secret support to Syrian rebels fighting Bashar Assad. But how far is the U.S. willing to go to empower its proxies to take on Vladimir Putin’s allies? The answer seems to be: Not very far.

“Countering Russia’s involvement in Syria doesn’t rate nearly as high on the scale” as battling the Islamic State, which has declared a caliphate across parts of Syria and Iraq, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Tuesday.

After the CIA spent more than two years secretly working with Arab allies to arm, train and fund thousands of so-called moderate rebels to oppose Assad, American officials have watched in recent days as Russian bombs and missiles have targeted those groups.

U.S. officials and outside experts said the Obama administration is unlikely to protect CIA-backed rebels from Russian air strikes – by providing them with surfaceto-air missiles, for example – for fear they could fall into the wrong hands and be used against passenger jets in a terrorist attack.

There is also little appetite in the White House for a U.S.-enforced no-fly zone in Syria, officials said.

Probe: Buk missile downed Malaysian jet in Ukraine GILZE-RIJEN AIR BASE, Netherlands – The missile shot skyward from war-ravaged eastern Ukraine. Clinton, Sanders clash on guns, economy, foreign policy

Bernie Sanders clashed over U.S. involvement in the Middle East, gun control and economic policy in the first Democratic presidential debate Tuesday night, vigorously outlining competing visions for a party seeking to keep the White House for a third straight term.

Yet in a moment of political unity – and levity – Sanders leapt to Clinton’s defense on the issue of her controversial email practices as secretary of state.

“The American people are sick and tired are hearing about your [darn] emails,” Sanders exclaimed as the crowd in Las Vegas roared with applause. A smiling Clinton reached over to shake his hand and said, “Thank you, Bernie.”

While the five candidates onstage took issue with each other, they also repeatedly sounded traditional Democratic themes – such as fighting income inequality – that are sure to carry over to the general election campaign against the Republicans.

First, the Democrats must

choose their own candidate.

And throughout most of the two-hour debate Clinton played the role of aggressor, an unexpected shift for a candidate who had barely mentioned her Democratic rivals since launching her campaign six months ago. Until now, Clinton and Sanders – who has surprisingly emerged as her toughest competition – have circled each other cautiously and avoided direct attacks.

After Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, derided “a casino capitalist process by which so few have so much,” Clinton said it would be a “big mistake” for the U.S. to turn its back on the system that built the American middle class. Asked whether she thought Sanders, who has a mixed record on gun control legislation, had been tough enough on the issue, she said simply,” No, I do not.”

While Sanders is drawing big crowds on the campaign trail and challenging Clinton’s fundraising prowess, he’s largely unknown to many Americans. Tuesday’s debate offered him a high-profile opportunity to cast himself as an electable alternative to Clinton and appeal for support beyond his liberal base.

Sanders has sought in particular to distinguish himself from Clinton over foreign policy, an issue where she is often more hawkish than others in the Democratic Party.

The former secretary of state reiterated her call for more robust U.S. action to stop the Syrian civil war and defended her judgment on international issues, despite having voted for the 2002 invasion of Iraq.

Sanders called the Iraq war “the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of our country” and said he would not support sending American combat troops back to the Middle East to fight terrorism.

“Nobody does, Senator Sanders,” Clinton interjected.

Clinton’s confident performance was likely to ease anxiety among supporters who have questioned her campaign’s handling of the email controversy. One question still to be answered: how her showing will affect Vice President Joe Biden’s decision about making a late entry into the Democratic race.

Biden has been deliberating about his political future for months and is expected to announce a decision within days. Debate host CNN kept an extra podium on standby in case he decided to show up.

NEW YORK – Responding to a furor over undercover videos, Planned Parenthood says it will maintain programs at some of its clinics that make fetal tissue available for research, but will no longer accept any reimbursement to cover the costs of those programs.

Anti-abortion activists who recently released a series of covertly filmed videos have contended that Planned Parenthood officials sought profits from their programs providing post-abortion fetal tissue to researchers. Planned Parenthood said the videos were deceptively edited and denied seeking any payments beyond legally permitted reimbursement of costs.

The new policy – forgoing even permissible reimbursement – was outlined in a letter sent Tuesday by Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, to Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health.

“Planned Parenthood’s policies on fetal tissue donation already exceed the legal requirements,” Richards wrote. “Now we’re going even further in order to take away any basis for attacking Planned Parenthood to advance an anti-abortion political agenda.”

The videos were released, starting in mid-July, by a group of anti-abortion activists calling themselves the Center for Medical Progress.

Activists posed as representatives of a biomedical firm and sought to negotiate the purchase of fetal organs from some Planned Parenthood personnel.

David Deleiden, who led the undercover video effort, depicted Planned Parenthood’s shift as “an admission of guilt.”

U.S. needs young people to answer the call to public service I know that many people are fed up with the failures of our governments and our politicians. We face so many problems today and our system seems incapable of solutions.

I understand this frustration. I ran for Congress to get things done, but Washington is often tied up in worthless bickering. Even the simplest thing, such as naming a post office after a fallen hero, got stalled for half a year in the House. But that post office finally got named for Chicago Fire Captain Herbie Johnson. And at the end of the last Congress, I got two other bills signed into law after five years of work. Some things – but not nearly enough – are getting done, but at too slow of a pace.

This era of gridlock will end. But what concerns me is that the current state of our system is driving many good people out of public service. I have seen it happen in Congress. But what is even more concerning to me is that so many young people have lost faith in public service.

They don’t see government and politics as worthwhile endeavors to be involved in, so they don’t ever consider public service. The problem is that if we don’t have talented people who want to be involved in policymaking and implementation, our future will be bleak.

I’m not saying that millennials don’t care about the world and those around them.

Many are doing volunteer work and others are pursuing a career working for nongovernmental organizations who are making a positive difference in the world. I see this every year as I travel around my district and when I nominate high school seniors for our nation’s service academies.

I am not arguing for big

Dan Lipinski government, but government and politics will always play a very significant role in shaping the lives of the people of this nation, and without good people in public service, we will all be worse off. Every day I am reminded of how important it is to have smart, knowledgeable, hard-working staff helping me make a difference as a representative.

Almost 55 years ago in his inaugural address, John F. Kennedy told Americans, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” He inspired the nation, especially young people, to embrace public service. Our country faces many problems today that are going to require smart solutions, and some of these are going to require the American people acting through their governments to solve. It is time for millennials to embrace these challenges.

Ironically, as Donald Trump continues to lead in the polls largely on his criticism of the failures of politicians and government, he is also making an argument that our system isn’t hopelessly broken. Trump says he can make government work for the American people.

He says that through his leadership and by bringing good people into government he will “make America great again.” Whatever you think about Trump, he is right that good people can make a difference. And it is going to be up to millennials to lead.

Country should encourage competition CHICAGO – Last week, I ordered my first Uber ride.

Normally when I take the train to Chicago from Springfield, I hail a cab to get to my hotel from Union Station.

But last week Chicago cab drivers went on strike – to protest Uber.

This presented an excellent opportunity for travelers – such as myself – to try something new.

Uber is a ridesharing company. It allows potential passengers to use a smartphone application to connect with drivers of vehicles for hire.

So I downloaded an Uber application to my phone and requested a ride.

Moments later a Volkswagen pulled to the curb and I hopped in.

The driver immigrated to the United States from Colombia. During the day, he works as a valet parker and in the evening he drives his family’s car for a couple more hours to help make ends meet.

As he drove me to my hotel, he showed me pictures of his seven kids and gushed over the opportunities he has found in this nation.

And one of those opportunities is Uber. It’s a typical immigrant story: Work hard, compete and make things better for your children.

And they must abide by a slew of regulations, which companies like Uber have managed to avoid.

The answer to this unfair situation is creating a level playing field for the cabbies.

Eliminate the pricey medallion licensing system, reduce barriers to the market and slash regulations.

This benefits consumers as well as taxi drivers by bringing prices down.

Uber is part of a new economic concept called “the sharing economy.”

And it’s here to stay.

For example, a co-worker of mine has quit staying in hotels.

She logs onto Airbnb and selects a room from among those offered by private homeowners who rent out extra space.

As one might expect, motel owners hate this competition.

Tough luck.

We should encourage, rather than discourage, compe-

tition. In a refreshing free-market move this year, the Illinois General Assembly embraced a portion of the sharing economy by allowing for investment crowdfunding of businesses.

Let’s say you want to start a barbershop but don’t want to borrow from a bank to get your business going. You can sell portions of the ownership of your business over the Internet to finance the endeavor.

It’s sort of like the New York Stock Exchange only for smaller businesses.

As you may have guessed, not all bankers are real keen on this idea.

But it has given opportunities for people to start a business who otherwise might not be able to.

Uber, Airbnb and investment crowdfunding are just some of the latest examples of how the marketplace thrives on competition. When competition doesn’t exist, entrepreneurs will find a way to create it.

And that benefits customers.

That’s the beauty of the free enterprise system.

“When you look at the run of play, I think that they outplayed us,” Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “They outplayed us in the first half, even though we had the 2-0 lead, and they obviously outplayed in the second half to find the tie. I think that they’re a good team. They’re senior-dominated with a whole lot of skill and speed.

“This says a lot about our team,” Flores said. “In both games, we were down against

really good teams. We started off slow but once we started clicking, we started doing really good. That’s the story of our season. At the beginning it was on and off and now we’re clicking.”

After getting some good chances early in the final half, the Bengals finally connected in the 66th minute when Christopher Garcia connected from close range.

Then in the 72nd minute, the Wildcats were whistled for a hand ball in the box, which resulted in Tchamou burying the penalty to even the score.

“They’re a good team,” Tchamou said. “But we know we are good, too. The seniors know that we have to lead and trust our coach and the other players. Early in the season we were trying to find things but in the last four games we’re starting to come together as a team.”

The Wildcats, who won seven straight SPC titles through 2012, started off well

against East by getting a score from Edgar Cardenas in the seventh minute to grab a 1-0 lead.

After Petrovic threatened with some long free kicks and Cardenas had a try punched away, Central made it 2-0 in the 29th minute when Joel Sanchez bent a nice corner kick in front of the net and Gustavo Sanchez headed the ball in to make it a 2-0 contest.

East’s best first-half chance came just before the break when Alan Romero had a free kick punched away by Shane Badertscher and then had a corner kick bounce off the post.

“Both teams are really good,” East’s Edgar Flores said. “But it all came down to our coach and our honest effort at the end of the day. We were determined and it was about how badly we wanted it.

For the Chicago Cubs and their ever-hopeful fans, this bash was a long time in the making.

Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez homered and the young Cubs clinched a postseason series at Wrigley Field for the first time ever, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 Tuesday to win the NL Division Series in four games.

“This is all just baseball fantasy, right?” a drenched chairman Tom Ricketts said.

Only once since they last brought home the World Series in 1908 had the Cubs won a playoff series and never before had they finished off the job at their century-plus-old ballpark.

But with a raucous, towel-waving crowd jamming the Friendly Confines, the North Siders gave generations of fans exactly what they wanted.

“I can only imagine what the next thing is going to look like,” said Lester, the lefty who twice won the World Series with Boston. “And the next thing after that.”

The crowd started roaring before the first pitch. And when closer Hector Rondon struck out Stephen Piscotty on a ball in the dirt and catcher Miguel Montero made the tag to end it, the Cubs came streaming out of the dugout.

“They deserve it,” Rizzo said in the middle of the party.

“Hopefully, this is just a taste of what’s to come.”

Up-and-comers all season under their first-year manager, Maddon’s bunch of wild-card Cubs had arrived.

As the music blared and the strobe lights flashed in the clubhouse, Cubs players and coaches soaked each other.

Then they took the celebration back onto the field as fans went crazy – Vedder, from the local area, pitched right in.

The Cubs will face the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers-New York Mets matchup.

No team was hotter down the stretch than the Cubs, which finished third in the majors with 97 wins after five straight losing seasons.

The Cubs knocked out the two teams that finished ahead of them in the NL Central, beating Pittsburgh in the wild-card game and sending St. Louis home after it led the majors with 100 wins.

“I think we’re too young to even realize what we just did,” young slugger Kris Bryant said. “It truly is a special time right now.”

The banged-up Cardinals had reached the NLCS in the last four years.

“It was just unfortunate,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. “This is a team that was as impressive to watch from Day One as any team I’ve ever been around.”

“That’s always hard to walk away from. We had an opportunity maybe to get back home and do things differently, but they took advantage of the opportunities they had,” he said.

Rizzo’s solo drive to right off losing pitcher Kevin Siegrist in the sixth put the Cubs back on top 5-4 after St. Louis scored two in the top half.

As if the fans were already hollering at the top of their lungs after that home run, they were really screaming after Schwarber’s monstrous shot leading off the seventh. The ball landed on top of the rightfield videoboard and wound up nestled against a railing on the front edge.

The late drives by Rizzo and Schwarber along with Baez’s three-run homer off John Lackey in the second came after the Cubs set a postseason record with six long balls in Monday’s win.

Minooka takes care of business

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The first four points that Minooka’s volleyball team scored against Oswego on Tuesday night summed up what the Indians have been as a team for most of the season.

After Oswego took a 1-0 lead, Minooka scored the next four points, getting kills from three different players – Kamryn Johnson, Holly Bonde and Ginger Perinar – as well as an ace from server Rocky Perinar. That distribution of points has been an Indian hallmark this season.

But as the Southwest Prairie match, which Minooka won, 25-16, 25-23, wore on, it became clear that there is now a go-to hitter in the Indian lineup, Southern Illinois recruit Ginger Perinar.

By the time the match was over, Perinar had a team-leading 15 kills to go with a team high 15 digs, as well as three service aces.

Rocky Perinar and Johnson each had five kills, while Bonde and Emily Hise each had four kills.

After Week 7 in the high school football season, we get a good idea of how the playoffs might shape up from a Joliet-area perspective.

The bottom line is we have six area teams that definitely are in and another seven that can get in with the right combination of results in Week 8 and Week 9.

Here is the breakdown: In for sure are defending state champion Wilmington (7-0) in Class 3A, JCA (7-0) in 5A, defending state runner-up Lemont (6-1) and Lincoln-Way West (6-1) in 6A, and Lincoln-Way East (5-2) and Plainfield North (5-2) in 7A. Most five-win teams get in, but some do not. It all depends on playoff points (opponent victories).

We placed Lincoln-Way West in 6A and Plainfield North in 7A for now because on this week’s Playoff Outlook on the IHSA web site, the enrollment cutoff to begin 6A is 1,218 and the cutoff to end 7A is 2,286. Lincoln-Way West’s enrollment is 1,287, Plainfield North’s is 2,231. Of course, the scale can slide up or down depending on results statewide in Week 8 and Week 9.

Three area schools – Bolingbrook, Coal City and Plainfield South – appear in good shape as far as making the playoffs.

Bolingbrook (4-3) needs one more win to qualify in 8A, and the Raiders hope that will come Friday against Lockport (2-5). Bolingbrook travels to No. 1-ranked Homewood-Flossmoor (7-0) in Week 9, so it would behoove the Raiders to handle the Porters.

Coal City (4-3) and Plainfield South (4-3) should be OK with one more victory. Neither has an overabundance of playoff points, but they likely have enough to get in with five wins.

Coal City, which would play in 4A, hosts Lisle (5-2) this week and concludes the season at Seneca (2-5). Plainfield South is home against Plainfield Central (0-7) Friday night

The big playoff question in the Lincoln-Way West camp is whether the Warriors and coach Dave Ernst will play in Class 5A or 6A. and finishes at Oswego (6-1).

Assuming everything works out for Bolingbrook, Coal City and Plainfield South, that would give us nine qualifiers, which is a bit low by our standards. However, there are four others that can beef up our tally.

Joliet West (3-4), Minooka (4-3) and Morris (3-4) must win their last two games. West will entertain Stagg on Friday night and ends the season at Lockport. Minooka visits Oswego East (4-3) and hosts Plainfield North (5-2). Morris is at DeKalb (6-1) and at LaSalle-Peru (3-4).

West and Minooka would qualify in 8A and Morris probably in 5A. If the playoffs were beginning now, the 4A/5A cutoff would be at 818, and Morris’ enrollment is 884.

Then there’s Lincoln-Way Central, which must win at home Friday night against Lincoln-Way North (7-0) or on the road at Thornton (6-1) in Week 9 to qualify. The Knights would play in 7A. But winning

one of the last two games is the hard part.

Among the area schools definitely out of playoff contention is defending 7A state champion Providence (2-5). The Celtics have 45 playoff points, meaning they have played one of the state’s toughest schedules. Regardless of your strength of schedule, however, if you don’t get to five victories, you wind up on the outside looking in.

The other aspect of the playoffs, besides who will qualify, is the manner in which the IHSA will form the brackets within each class.

In Classes 1A through 6A, two 16-team brackets will be drawn up, with geography a key factor in who winds up where. In each 16-team grouping, the No. 1 seed will open against No. 16, No. 2 vs. No. 15, etc. Seeds, remember, are done first by record and then by playoff points within each record.

Where Lincoln-Way West is placed might influence that because of its proximity to JCA, but only if West plays in 5A. As noted, the Warriors would be in 6A if the playoffs were beginning today.

In 7A and 8A, a 32-team bracket will be employed

because a large majority of the teams will be from the greater Chicago area. The No. 1 seed will open against No. 32, No. 2 will take on No. 31, etc.

Where has this season gone? Only two weeks remain before it’s playoff time.

Players buy into ‘don’t flinch’ mentality

“It’s all part of coaching, the idea of not giving up,” Fox said Monday at Halas Hall.

“Usually, the tree doesn’t go down on the first swing.

It takes a few and you don’t know how many. You just keep swinging until the tree falls.”

The Bears have won two games in a row in dramatic fashion, and Porter said the defense started feeling good

about itself the week before, when the Bears lost, 26-0, to the Seahawks.

“When a team goes down 17-3 and we don’t bat an eye,” Porter said about how he knows the confidence is building. “… Pernell Tracy Porter [McPhee] came in and said, ‘We’re going to get the ball back.’ I told Pernell, ‘Man, we just have to keep grinding.

We have to continue getting three and outs. We have to get a turnover. But we’re going to win this game.’

“And he looked at me and said, ‘I’m right with you.’

Once you have guys like that who are behind each other, we’re not worried about a point deficit of what we’re down or what we’re up.”

Despite being down, 17-3, without much to think positively about on the offensive side of the ball, the Bears weren’t concerned.

“Foxy always tells us ‘Don’t flinch,’ ‘Don’t blink,’ ” Long said. “Things are going to happen, that’s the nature of the game. It’s not going to be all uphill or downhill for us. It’s going to be: You’re going to have some tough spots throughout the game, and you

need to be able to survive the body blows and keep working.”

Grasu’s trial by fire: Long was impressed with the way rookie Hroniss Grasu handled the Arrowhead Stadium crowd and his calls to the O-line in his NFL debut.

“The only thing I can really attest to is his job communicating pre-snap,” Long said.

“His consistency in the cadence. And the silent count, he did a really good job there.

There was no hesitation. He was confident. He was communicating well on the sideline in between drives. He did a great job. Obviously, there’s room for improvement

all across the board, but I’m proud of Hroniss.”

New signal-caller on ‘D’: Fox had no update on linebacker Shea McClellin’s knee injury, but the Bears figure to start the week with Christian Jones calling plays on defense, like he had to do in the second half after McClellin left.

“I think he’ll get better as he gets to practice that more,” Fox said. “We’ll get an opportunity to put him in that role probably some this week.

We’ll have to see where Shea is come Wednesday. LaRoy Reynolds stepped in there and did some good things, obviously some things we’ll have to work on and get better at.”

Rodgers left Sunday’s win over the Chiefs with the injury, which he suffered on a kickoff.

“I think he’s a guy who kind of surpassed probably our expectations and contributed on the field whether it was on offense or in the kicking game,” Fox said. “He’s a guy that will be missed, but over time, he’ll get better and we’ll get back in the future.”

Rodgers was the team’s No. 2 running back. He had 14 carries for 41 yards and one catch for 10 yards, while also playing a role on the kickoff return and punt coverage teams. Rodgers appeared in 11.6 percent of offensive snaps through five games.

“I think it affects everybody,” Fox said about the running back depth chart. “We’ll take a look at Antone. He’s go-

He also had 13 catches for 222 yards and five total touchdowns. Smith had a 54-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown against the Saints last season, where Ryan Pace was evaluating personnel. Smith also had

a 74-yard receiving touchdown, 41-yard receiving score against the Bears and rushing touchdowns of 38 and 48 yards.

The Falcons released Smith with an injury settlement before the season. He injured his hamstring in the preseason, but the 30-year-old has been cleared to return to action.

NEW YORK – Clayton Kershaw finally came through in October, just in time to save the Los Angeles Dodgers from another early exit.

Pitching on short rest with the season on the line, Kershaw shut down the New York Mets for seven innings and Justin Turner delivered a key hit against his former team that sent the Dodgers to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night and forced the NL Division Series to a deciding Game 5.

The series shifts back to Los Angeles on Thursday night, with fellow Dodgers ace Zack Greinke scheduled to start against Jacob deGrom.

The winner hosts the wildcard Cubs in the NL Championship Series opener Saturday.

With Chase Utley on the bench again, the Dodgers handed hometown Mets rook-

in 12 career postseason games, including nine starts. He had lost elimination games each of the past two years, once on three days’ rest.

But this time, Kershaw was just as dominant as he normally is during the regular season.

Kershaw struck out eight, walked one and yielded only three hits, quieting another revved-up crowd at Citi Field as the night wore on. Daniel Murphy hit his second solo homer off Kershaw in the series, both coming in the fourth inning.

Kenley Jansen got four outs for his second save. With two runners on in the eighth and the count full, he retired Murphy on a fly to right. The righthander then worked a 1-2-3 ninth as the Dodgers ended a seven-game losing streak in road playoff games.

For Halloween, dress up a chocolate cupcake mummy-style

f you have children, chances are pretty good you’ll find yourself needing to bake something for a Halloween event. Or maybe you got invited to an adult Halloween party and you volunteered to bring a dessert. Either way, this is the recipe you need for a fast, easy – and delightfully spooky – party treat.

These adorable little mummy cupcakes don’t take much more time than frosting a bunch of regular cupcakes, but the fun/cool factor is extremely high.

If you do have kids, grab them and ask them to help. So what if one

Start to finish: 2 hours (45 minutes active) Makes 24 cupcakes For the cupcakes: 1½ cups water 1 cup cocoa powder 2 cups sugar 2½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon kosher salt 4 large eggs, room temperature 3/4 cup vegetable or canola oil 1/2 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For the marshmallow frosting: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

That’s part of the charm of bringing a homemade item – that it looks a little homemade.

My older son, Jack, pronounced these the best chocolate cupcakes I’ve ever made, and I’ve made a lot of cupcakes.

So think of these even after Halloween has come and gone, and skip the mummy frosting part for a delicious, basic chocolate cupcake recipe.

You can use any frosting you like, including this one, and just give them a good smear for other occasions. I clearly will be making them for Jack’s birthday in January.

7-ounce jar marshmallow spread (such as Marshmallow Fluff), about 2 cups 3 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 to 3 tablespoons milk, half-andhalf or heavy cream 48 M&Ms or other small, round colored candies Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 24 muffin tins with paper liners, then mist the liners with cooking spray.

In a small saucepan over medium-high, bring the water to a boil. Whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar until smooth, then allow the chocolate mixture to cool off the heat for about 15 minutes.

cools, in a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In another medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the eggs, oil, sour cream and vanilla. Add the cooled chocolate mixture and beat just to combine. Add the flour mixture in 3 batches, beating on low speed just until the flour is incorporated.

Divide the batter between the cupcake liners, filling each one three-quarters full. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted at the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove the cupcakes from the pan and finish cooling them in their liners on the wire rack.

While the cupcakes are cooling,

make the frosting. In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to blend together the butter, marshmallow spread, powdered sugar and vanilla. Add the milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the frosting is creamy but still firm. You may not need all of the milk.

To decorate the cooled cupcakes, fill a pastry bag fitted with a basket weave decorating tip with the frosting. Pipe long bands of frosting across the cupcakes, leaving a space in the middle to add the eyes. (For a video demonstrating this, visit https://youtu. be/GO2vG3cFm0M .)

Place 2 candies in the open space for eyes, then use a tiny piping tip to add a little dot of frosting in the middle of each candy for

the pupils. You also could use a toothpick and dab a bit of frosting in the middle of each candy. You can mix and match the candy colors for fun.

George S. Kaufman, a dramatist and journalist who died in 1961, said, “Once upon a time there were three bears: Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Camembert.”

That’s a pretty cheesy comment, but in this deal, declarer must bear up at trick three. He is in four spades.

West leads the heart ace: three, nine, four. West cashes the heart king: six, two, jack. West continues with the heart queen. What should declarer do?

First, South should check his losers.

He seems to have only three: two in hearts and one in clubs. But he must also worry about that third heart.

East has played high-low, indicating a doubleton. Yes, he might be fooling, but what if he is not? Then he is threatening to overruff the dummy at trick three and give declarer an extra loser.

At trick three, South has four dummy choices: ruff low, ruff middle, ruff high, or discard. Which should he choose?

As I am confident you have worked out by now, the second-best play is to ruff with dummy’s spade nine. Maybe West has the 10. Here, though, East overruffs and the contract goes down one.

Instead, declarer should discard one of dummy’s clubs. In this way, he trades a dangerous ruff in hearts for a much safer ruff in clubs.

Suppose West shifts to a club.

South wins with dummy’s ace (the honor from the shorter side first), draws two rounds of trumps, cashes his club king, ruffs his last club in the dummy, plays a diamond to his ace, draws East’s third trump, and claims.

If an opponent may objectionably overruff, consider shedding an inevitable loser.

But there are exceptions, and I’m an example. I jogged pretty much every day for 35 years – until my right hip joint wore out.

My hip bone was rubbing against my thigh bone, and it hurt.

Yet my left hip was completely normal. I got a right hip replacement, and the pain has been gone ever since.

So why did one of my hips go bad, but the other didn’t? I had an injury to the main muscle in my right thigh when I was a teenager. That muscle has never been as strong since. Years of jogging on asphalt probably put too much stress on my right hip.

I advise my patients who, like you, come from a family that tends to get osteoarthritis to choose regular exercise that minimizes the striking of bone on bone.

You can do other things to protect yourself against getting osteoarthritis.

If you are obese, lose weight. The extra weight puts extra stress on most of your joints.

If you have injured a joint – particularly if you have had a fracture that involves the joint – be especially careful about activities that stress that joint. Ditto for injuries to muscle that protects a joint.

Bottom line: Moving is better than not moving – for your joints and for overall health.

Dear Reader: A joint is a place where two or more bones come together. Your question has a simple and a more complicated answer.

The simple answer is: For most people, regular exercise is good for the joints.

The more complicated answer is certain types of exercise can put pressure on the joints. For example, jogging on hard surfaces, such as street asphalt, causes the bones of the pelvis, hip and knee to pound against each other. That pounding can start to damage joints.

On the other hand, even walking around puts pressure on many joints – for example, the spine, hip and knee. Yet most people don’t develop serious arthritis from walking.

That’s because muscles around a joint protect it from being injured.

They help keep the bones from pounding on each other. Regular exercise strengthens those muscles, and those muscles protect the joints.

Our joints are like car tires. The more you drive on tires, the faster they’ll need to be replaced.

Regular exercise that doesn’t cause bone to drive against bone – such as swimming or, to some extent, an elliptical cross-trainer – is clearly beneficial. It strengthens the muscles.

Dear Abby: I am a 30-year-old single mom of two young girls.

After my divorce, I returned to my hometown where my family is.

I’m enrolled in school full time and set to graduate in two semesters. I have a 3.7 GPA, my girls are well-adjusted and well-behaved, and I have my own place.

My mom primarily watches my girls when I’m in school, and I feel lucky to have her support.

The other day, Mom came into my room and opened my bedside drawer.

Like most people, this is where I keep my most private things.

She discovered I had a pack of cigarettes and some marijuana.

Abby, I don’t smoke often, but sometimes when the kids are down and things are taken care of, I like to smoke a joint, watch some shows and fall asleep. I take care of my responsibilities, and I don’t feel like an occasional joint impacts me negatively.

Mom now says she will no longer watch her grandchildren, and doesn’t want to see me again. I feel completely hurt, violated and disrespected.

We said some nasty things to each other, and I can’t help but feel she is completely wrong for reacting the way she did.
