Pilgrims Rest – Frankfort As interest in car travel grew during the first half of the 20th century, so did the number and variety of roadside services available in the United States.

It was during the 1920s that many of the modern conveniences for motorists sprang up along highways and major roads.

These new roadside businesses catering to the motorist included diners, hamburger stands and drive-in restaurants. Many of the earliest suppliers of food on the Lincoln Highway started out selling gas before diversifying into food, snacks, drinks and other amenities.

Other highway caterers, however, became more adventurous and enterprising from the beginning, including many family operated roadside stands, diners and driveins. These small businesses were successful until larger franchises and chains began competing with them for the traveling customer.

A Lincoln Highway roadside haven, designed to be automobile friendly, was the Pilgrims Rest Motor Court Motel.

Located on the southeast corner of Route 45 and Lincoln Highway in Frankfort, the Pilgrims Rest offered the travel-weary motorist a fine roadside motel with 19 rooms and a filling station that offered 24-hour service daily.

The motel was situated behind the Standard Oil station on the corner.

Family, friends and politicians gather to celebrate Crest Hill founder’s 100th birthday

So said Third Ward Alderwoman Tina Oberlin, who said she met Katherine “Kay” Thomas when Oberlin became involved with the Crest Hill Women’s Civic Action League, of which Kay had been an active member for many years.

Thomas, one of the founders of Crest Hill who has served as the first official Historian of the city of Crest Hill for the past 55 years, will turn 100 on Wednesday. She celebrated her birthday Sunday with about 60 friends and family members at Rosewood Care Center in Joliet – where Thomas now lives – but also with proclamations from Crest Hill Mayor Raymond R. Soliman, and state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, on behalf of the Illinois State Senate.

McGuire, who also was celebrating his birthday Sunday, said it’s important to honor citizens – especially those who served as much as Thomas did and especially on such a significant milestone.

“Even though we sit in the gilded palace down in Springfield in the capital,” McGuire said, “we realize that the real work’s done here at home.”

Oberlin was happy to see Thomas get her official due.

“Back in the day, she did different things to make the city become a city,” Oberlin said. “But women never got credit; they never got acknowledgement for those things. ... I truly admire the things she accomplished. She did them behind the scenes, and she did them diligently.”

Randy Thomas of Chicago, Thomas’ son, said working toward the incorporation of Crest Hill – which happened in January 1960 – was just one item in a long list of good things his mother did for other people. Kay Thomas did them because she believed in doing

what was right, Randy added, and she did them joyfully.

“She’s probably the most upbeat person you’ll ever meet in your life,” Randy said.

Soliman said he was happy to be part of Kay Thomas’ celebration. Kay Thomas was one of the original members of the Crest Hill Veterans and Police Memorial Committee –

of which Soliman is chairman – when it was formed in 1988.

Kay Thomas also served as its treasurer for 23 years, he added.

“She has given so much to this community,” Soliman said. “This [the proclamation] is the least I could do.”

According to the proclama-

tion – which declared Oct. 14, 2015, as Katherine C. Thomas Day – Thomas was active with the Parent Teacher Association and Band Parent Association at both Chaney Grade School and Lockport Township High School. She helped form the Crest Hill Lassies.

Thomas also volunteered with the Lockport Township Park District Senior activities, and Lockport Township Park District Young Timers Club. She was a charter member of the Crest Hill Women’s Civic League, the Crest Hill Veterans and Police Memorial Committee and the Lidice Memorial Committee.

Joliet student to meet medical experts

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet student Kassandra Caceres has earned the rare opportunity to meet with Nobel Prize winners and medical leaders next summer.

It’s an op- Kassandra portunity that Caceres may help West High School student Caceres achieve her goal of being a plastic and reconstructive sur-

geon.

She will represent Joliet Township High School District 204 and the state as a delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston.

The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists created the event to help students fulfill their dream of entering the medical profession and overcome lack of resources and guidance.

Student delegates nationwide meet with Nobel Prize winners, award-winning inventors and scientists, top medical school deans, academ-

ic leaders, patients and medical futurists, according to the program’s website.

“I’ll be able to ask them questions on how they got to their position. Maybe some day I will be able to do that. I think it’s an amazing opportunity for me,” Caceres said.

She was invited by the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists for recognition of her outstanding grades, leadership potential and desire to contribute to the field of medicine and health, district officials said.

“She’s an awesome young

lady,” said Janice Sheehan, one of her teachers.

She said Caceres is a focused student who works a part-time job and also is a member of the National Honor Society, school student council and school health and medicine academy roundtable.

“This girl is just a real well-rounded young women,” Sheehan said.

Caceres said she wants to be a plastic and reconstructive surgeon to help people recover from wounds and illnesses that affect their appearance.

“I would be turning a nega-

tive into a positive,” she said.

Caceres is thankful to her teachers in middle and high school, including Sheehan, as well as her mother, Myra Garcia, and her brother. She said her family has “always been my backbone.”

Garcia said she is excited to see her daughter’s hard work and dedication pay off.

“People who get into the [medical] field get mentored and learn what to expect; how to apply for medical school. I think it’s a great opportunity and I feel like it’s going to help her,” Garcia said.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Thousands of people flooded the LyondellBasell Recreation Area on Sunday for the 29th annual Morris Lions Club Fall Classic Car Show.

According to Morris Lions Club President Judy Miller,

more than 1,000 cars registered for the show, 600 swap spots for buying and selling car-related items were sold, and more than 200 cars were for sale in the car corral. Miller stressed that the car show next year will be at a different date because of scheduling conflicts. The 2016 show will be Oct. 30 and will have a Halloween theme.

JOLIET – Two Will County educators will be honored this month by the Illinois State Board of Education for their contributions as teachers.

Joliet Township High School District 204 teacher Dale West and Summit Hill School District 161 teacher Pamela Wandersen will be honored at the 40th annual Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year banquet on Saturday in Normal.

West will be given a merit award for the Early Career Educator category, while Wandersen will be given an excellence award in the Classroom Teacher category.

According to ISBE, local school district leaders and community members nominate candidates for recognition. A committee of peers – organized through ISBE – nominate candidates for awards. The committee is

comprised of statewide education organizations and includes former award winners.

Wandersen, who teaches third grade at Indian Trail Elementary School in Frankfort, said she was honored by the award.

“I am not one of those people who look for notoriety. This whole thing has been kind of a surprise for me. I am very honored and humbled,” she said.

She said she is fortunate to work with good teachers and students. She was inspired to go into teaching based on her own teachers.

“I use them as a role models and they inspired me to be the best I can be in the classroom,” she said.

Dale West was unable to be contacted Friday. According to District 204, West is a Joliet Central High School teacher and Eastern Illinois University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in career and technical education.

He was one of two teach-

ers who worked with students this year to prepare them to speak with state lawmakers for the Illinois Association for Career and Technical Education Legislative Day. State education officials will welcome 250 award recipients to the banquet.

They will receive recognition on three levels – recognition, merit and excellence – across several categories, including classroom teacher, school administrator and student support personnel.

The banquet also will honor the finalists and winner for Teacher of the Year.

Ten finalists were chosen for the award from school districts statewide.

The person chosen as Teacher of the Year serves as the state ambassador for the teaching profession during the 2015-16 school year. He or she also represents the state in the National Teacher of the Year program sponsored by the ING Foundation.

Pedestrian killed on I-55 in Grundy County

The Grundy County Coroner is investigating the death of a pedestrian that happened on Interstate 55 early Sunday morning.

The death occurred shortly after midnight Sunday on I-55 near the 221-mile post – about a mile north of the I-55 and Route 47 interchange – according to a news release from Coroner John W. Callahan.

The preliminary investigation found a man was walking along I-55 and jumping in front of the oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes, according to the news release.

“At least one witness stated

he swerved and missed the subject and also called authorities, however, within minutes other vehicles were northbound as well and were not able to avoid striking the pedestrian,” the news release stated. “Witnesses stated the pedestrian was struck more than once and the evidence in the early stage of the investigation supports that statement.”

Callahan pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene at 1:15 a.m. Sunday. He later on Sunday released the name of the pedestrian as Matthew Scott Miller, 24, of Midlothian.

Callahan was assisted in the notification of next of kin by Midlothian police.

Callahan said the incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Illinois State Police.

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – A 22-year-old Joliet man was fatally shot Saturday in Lockport Township, police said.

Gunfire was reported at 7:23 p.m. in the 100 block of Fairmont Avenue, and Will County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find Russell L. Mitchell Jr. and another man in the middle of the street, according to Deputy Chief Tom Budde.

“Mitchell’s friend said they had been outside when shots came from down the street and Mitchell was struck in the head,” Budde said.

Mitchell died at 7:56 p.m. in the emergency room at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. His friend was not injured.

“We have limited information

and have not identified any suspects at this time,” Budde said Sunday morning.

Living for Jesus Joliet woman’s spiritual compassion influenced her attitude and actions

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As Marcia Marzec was going through her mother’s things, she was amazed at the volume of material Lucille Smith of Joliet had amassed.

One by one, Marcia went through the folders, arranged by topic: each Roman Catholic pope, Fatima and other Marian apparitions, health and diet issues, AIDS, political figures and church figures, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Kennedy assassination, events in the Middle East, Islam and recent Supreme Court decisions.

Lucille even made lists of her favorite songs, complete with lyrics.

These were not mere clippings that Lucille had given a quick glance and then appropriately filed, but a journey of Lucille’s thoughts and reflections as she learned from them, led by a trail of Lucille’s handwritten notes.

Through the years, Marcia, an English professor emeritus at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, has published numerous books and papers, and taught hundreds of students since she began her teaching career in 1970.

But Marcia’s foundational inspiration was not a school or favorite teacher. It was her mother Lucille, and Lucille’s love for research – which

spurred her knowledge.

And the foundation for Lucille’s life was her love for Jesus Christ, which colored Lucille’s life with compassion, a strong sense of social justice and cheerfulness in challenging circumstances.

Lucille’s constant prayer was “Jesus I live for you,” Marcia said. And live for Jesus Lucille did.

For instance, Lucille was the type of mother who helped her children with homework every night, searched Childcraft books for educational recreation and insisted on piano lessons. Yet Lucille never emphasized grades or vying with others for the top.

“You competed with your best self,” Marcia said. “You were always trying to be better; you were always trying to develop yourself.”

Lucille didn’t compete with people. She loved them. She visited the sick in the hospital, baked cakes for those recovering at home and prayed daily rosaries that lasted for hours because she interceded for so many people by name.

But Lucille also attended anti-war gatherings in the 1960s and a Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in the auditorium at Joliet Central High School after King’s assassination because Lucille felt it was the right thing to do.

Marcia accompanied Lucille to that memorial, noting

that few white people attended.

Furthermore, slipping onto a back seat wouldn’t do for Lucille.

“We were way up there, maybe the fourth row or the sixth row, and it was so nice,” Marcia said. “Everyone held hands and sang ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ” Lucille’s compassion extended to all of God’s entire creation. She cared for sick birds and never killed a bug or spider. When her last cat died and Lucille decided she was too old to properly care for another one, a relative gave her a beta fish. Lucille pampered that fish.

“In the winter, she would put a towel around the bowl so that her fish would not get cold,” Marcia said.

Looking back, Marcia feels Lucille’s greatest ministry didn’t begin until the few years before Lucille’s death Jan. 20 at age 96.

Despite battling a frequent round of infections, hospitalizations and bedsores, Lucille remained kind, loving and cheerful. She always smiled, never complained and complimented her providers for taking such good care of her.

“She suffered the way Christians should suffer – sharing the suffering of Christ,” Marcia said. “The fact that she always prayed and kept the faith, offering up her suffering and accepting it as

FOIA issue – emails on private devices – goes back to court

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois law states government officials’ emails about taxpayer business are public records for all to see. But what if they’re sent from private accounts or personal cellphones?

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel argues those are not for public consumption. The Chicago Tribune claims they are, and took the matter to court last month. Gov. Bruce Rauner had his own dust-up this summer over an aide’s private emails, and the practice cost a University of Illinois chancellor her job in August.

The issue, once limited to scattered consternations over politicians playing fast and loose with new technology, is pervasive this year, beginning with revelations about Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server to conduct business while she was U.S. secretary of state – a case that spurred a lawsuit by The Associated Press.

Public-access advocates insist Illinois law is clear, and the state’s attorney general and appellate court weighed in just two years ago, declaring that public business is public record – no matter how it’s conducted.

The Illinois Freedom of Information Act requires disclosure of public records “regardless of physical form or characteristics.” The appellate court decreed in a case involving the Champaign City Council that making an exception for communication on private devices would allow officials to “subvert” FOIA by avoiding all official channels. That very concern is back in court as government officials parse the 2013 ruling’s language.

In the case of Emanuel, the Tribune sought emails related to Chicago’s scandal-tainted system of red-light tickets enforced through cameras. But the Democrat’s administration argued messages sent from private devices are not in a public body’s possession.

FOIA “does not impose an obligation to locate and search private email accounts,” the city said in a July denial letter to the Tribune. The newspaper filed the lawsuit Sept. 24.

As for Rauner, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that education adviser Beth Purvis, operating as a contractual employee, was using a private email account to conduct public business. Rauner’s legal staff denied a Sun-Times FOIA for Purvis, using the “possession” argument, then reversed itself and disclosed several documents, including one marked “confidential.” But the office maintains the issue remains “unsettled.”

Rauner’s office did not respond to a request for comment from the AP, but told the SunTimes this summer that: “Case law and statutory interpretation of Illinois’ FOIA make it plain that personal emails are not public records.”

Nonelected officials also came under fire this year. The

University of Illinois cited FOIA wiggle room when it announced in August that emails sent to and from former Chancellor Phyllis Wise to and from private accounts had potentially been improperly withheld.

A school statement declared that the FOIA law is not specific about “personal email accounts” and the law is “not settled on this issue.”

Access advocates said it was settled in the 2013 appellate court ruling on a lawsuit filed by the Champaign News-Gazette, but others believe the court’s opinion provides maneuverability. City Council members texting one another during a public meeting, prompting the newspaper to argue the texts contained information that could affect the officeholders’ policy positions.

But city councils aren’t technically a public body until it convenes to conduct business, so the appellate court determined that an email sent by private account might be subject to disclosure if it was sent to a government account, to a majority of members of a public body or during a public meeting.

“The court noted that there may be circumstances where a government official is emailing someone on his or her private device where it is not a public record,” according to Julie Tappendorf, a Chicago lawyer who represents municipalities.

“It is only when that official is acting as a public body that his or her private emails will turn into public records.”

OBITUARIES SR. EILEEN BANNON, OSF

MARY JEAN CALIFELLO

Sister Eileen Bannon, OSF (Sr. M Rose Francis), died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois, on October 6, 2015. She was born in Joliet, Illinois, to the late Henrietta (Braun) and Robert J. Bannon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert; and her sisters, Peggy Baron and Claire Burke.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph (Joan) Bannon, of Joliet, IL; her sister, Mary Alyce (John) Kielp of Waukegan, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews of which Mary Ann Bannon Komar, Martha Bachther, James, Joseph, Robert and Thomas Bannon live in the Joliet area.

Sister Eileen was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 75 years. Before entering religious life, Sister Eileen attended St. Patrick Grade School and Joliet Township High School. She graduated from St. Francis Academy (Joliet Catholic Academy). She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) Joliet, IL and her Master’s Degree in Theatre at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Sister Eileen began her ministry in education as a teacher in high school at schools in Ohio and Illinois.

From 1967 until 1988, she taught speech and drama at the College of St. Francis. Upon retirement from the College, she received the distinction of Professor Emeritus. From 1988 until 2008 Sister Eileen was a member of the St. Clare House of Prayer where she ministered as a spiritual director.

The wake for Sister Eileen will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, from 2:00 to 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Wednesday morning, October 14, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, 1433 Essington Road, Joliet, IL 60435.

Mary Jean Califello “Gina” (nee Palleschi), age 89, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

Mary is survived by her loving son and caregiver, Gary Califello; and loving daughter, Lynda Berrey; grandchildren, Cheryl Frank and Christopher Berrey; great-grandchildren, Aidan Frank and Garrett Berrey; sister, Julie (the late Joseph) Lorenc; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Guery Califello; parents, Carmen and Lucia (nee Pistilli) Palleschi; brothers, Fiorino (Edyth), Larry (Millie) and Richard in infancy; sister, Helen (Michael) Grant.

Gina was born and raised in Rockdale, IL and attended Rockdale Grade School and graduated from Joliet Township High School. After high school she was employed as a secretary in the office of Rockdale Navy Yards and became a seamstress at Montgomery Ward.

Gina also sewed for friends, for her children and for church, including costumes for church and school programs. Raymond loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed taking them shooting at the range and fishing. “Papa” loved watching them participate in their sporting events. Raymond was a very talented carpenter and was also a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be dearly missed.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Authorities in suburban Chicago are concerned that an increase in deaths from suspected heroin overdoses may involve tainted batches of the drug making their way out of the city.

A more potent mix of heroin also is suspected in a dramatic rise in overdoses inside Chicago.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported coroners in DuPage and Kane counties are awaiting toxicology results to see if recent deaths there involved heroin laced with the powerful painkiller fentanyl.

McHenry and Lake County officials also are awaiting test results on a handful of cases.

The Chicago Fire Department said last week it had recorded 74 nonfatal overdoses in only three days.

BLOOMINGTON – A park in the central Illinois city of Bloomington officially has been classified as an important stopover site for migrating birds.

The Bloomington Pantagraph reported Ewing Park has been designated an Important Bird Area. Signs have been erected and a dedication ceremony was planned for Sunday.

The National Audubon Society implements the Important Bird Areas Program in the United States.

Matthew Winks of Bloomington’s Audubon chapter said he and other bird watchers submitted three years’ worth of data on birds they observed at the park to achieve the designation.

The Bloomington Audubon chapter helps the city’s parks department maintain the park by buying and planting shrubs and trees. The chapter also maintains nesting boxes for eastern

Bridge construction to halt Chicago-St. Louis Amtrak trains

CHICAGO – Amtrak will halt train service between Chicago and St. Louis from Oct. 17 to 31 to allow workers to rebuild and expand six bridges along Illinois’ high-speed rail route.

The work was scheduled for later in the month to avoid disrupting travel during Major League Baseball’s National League Division Series games in Chicago and St. Louis.

Chartered buses will replace Amtrak’s Lincoln Service trains during the stoppage.

The Texas Eagle service will detour between Chicago and St. Louis on a route through eastern Illinois without any scheduled stops.

Amtrak said a complete halt to train service will allow the bridge work to be finished sooner.

National Science Foundation chief to speak in Urbana

National Science Foundation plans to visit the University of Illinois’ Urbana campus to mark the agency’s sponsorship of a new engineering research center.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported France Cordova will speak Thursday at an event to celebrate an $18.5 million grant for the Power Optimization for Electro-Thermal Systems center, or POETS. Cordova became director of the National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency, last year. She’s an astrophysicist, former Purdue University president and was the first female chief scientist at NASA. The POETS center will conduct research aimed at producing lighter, more efficient power electronics systems for cars, planes, construction equipment and hand-held tools.

Illinois’ leading public university will lead the center with Howard University, Stanford University and the University of Arkansas as partners.

CHICAGO – Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich is calling for stronger gun regulations in the wake of mass shootings around the nation and street violence in the city.

Cupich wrote a commentary published in the Chicago Tribune over the weekend.

He wrote that the Second Amendment’s authors could not have anticipated the military-grade assault weapons of today. He quotes Pope Francis’ recent remarks to Congress about the arms trade being motivated by “money that is drenched in blood.”

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Survey: U.S. gasoline prices dip half a cent

CAMARILLO, Calif. – The average price of gasoline has dropped half a cent over the past two weeks, to $2.34 a gallon.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg reported Sunday that prices have fallen 52 cents in the past 17 weeks, but the latest cut is the smallest so far.

She said a moderate hike in the cost of crude oil has nudged up wholesale prices, so retailers have stopped cutting their street prices.

Lundberg said consumers could start to see higher gas prices if crude prices continue to jump.

In the lower 48 states, the highest average price of regular gasoline was $2.96 a gallon in Los Angeles. The lowest was $1.92 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Southwest: Technical issues delay flights

DALLAS – Southwest Airlines said hundreds of flights have been delayed by technical issues that are forcing it to check in some customers manually at airports and causing long lines.

The Dallas-based company asked travelers to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled departures as the problems that began Sunday morning continued into the evening. It also asked customers to use airport kiosks to print boarding passes and tags for luggage.

Representatives for Southwest did not say what caused the problem or how long it would

take to resolve. Spokesman Brad Hawkins said there was “absolutely no indication now” that the problems were the result of hack.

At Los Angeles International Airport earlier in the day, several dozen people crowded the Southwest terminal waiting to be issued handwritten tickets. By late afternoon, Southwest said about 450 of the 3,600 flights scheduled for the day had been delayed.

Iran’s parliament approves outline of bill on nuclear deal

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s parliament on Sunday approved an outline of a bill that would allow the government to implement a historic nuclear deal reached with world powers, the official IRNA news agency said.

State TV meanwhile announced that Iran had successfully testfired a new long-range ballistic missile, the first such test since the nuclear deal was reached in July.

The bill allows the government to withdraw from implementing the agreement if world powers do not lift sanctions, IRNA said. Final approval of the bill is expected later this week after further discussions.

The landmark deal would curb Iran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of international sanctions. Western nations have long suspected Iran of secretly pursuing nuclear arms, allegations denied by Tehran, which said its nuclear program is for purely peaceful purposes.

NATO: Helicopter crash at Kabul base kills five

By RAHIM FAIEZ The Associated Press KABUL, Afghanistan – A military helicopter crashed Sunday at the NATO base in the Afghan capital, Kabul, killing five coalition members and injuring five others, authorities said.

A statement from the Resolute Support Mission did not give the nationalities of those killed and injured, all of them NATO personnel.

But the British Ministry of Defense said two Royal Air Force members were among those killed when the Puma Mk 2 helicopter crashed while landing at the headquarters of the NATO Resolute Support Mission, which is training Afghan security forces.

The mission statement said the helicopter “crashed due to a non-hostile incident” around 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Camp Resolute Support in Kabul.

In London, the Ministry of Defense also said a convoy

of British military vehicles came under attack earlier Sunday in a separate incident in Kabul, but there were no fatalities.

Gen. Abdul Rahman Rahimi, Kabul’s police chief, said an explosion targeted a NATO military convoy in Kabul, wounding three civilians. He said the blast targeted two armored vehicles attached to the NATO Resolute Support mission, damaging one of them. He did not specify whether the vehicles were British.

While Rahimi and a Taliban spokesman said the convoy was attacked by a suicide car bomber, U.S. Army Col. Brian Tribus, the spokesman in Afghanistan for U.S. and NATO forces, said it was a roadside bomb. The discrepancy could not immediately be reconciled.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the three civilians suffered minor wounds. It said the blast damaged surrounding buildings.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid sent a statement to local media claiming responsibility.

There have been a number of attacks in the capital in recent weeks, including one on Oct. 6 targeting the house of former Helmand governor Nahim Baloch. After an allnight battle, 10 people were wounded, including three civilians and seven members of the Afghan security forces.

Officials said Baloch was not at home at the time.

The Taliban have been active across the country this year, most recently storming the northern city of Kunduz and holding it for three days before largely retreating in the face of a government counter-offensive.

In the helicopter crash, the aircraft appeared to strike a monitoring balloon as it landed at the NATO base, according to Najibullah, an Afghan security guard who witnessed the incident. Like many in Afghanistan, he goes by one name.

Islamic State could gain from Turkish bombing

By SUZAN FRASER The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey – Thousands mourned the 95 victims of Turkey’s deadliest attack in years as state inspectors tried Sunday to identify who sent suicide bombers to a rally promoting peace with Kurdish rebels.

The government said Kurdish rebels or Islamic State militants were likely responsible, while mourners accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of fomenting violence to gain votes for the ruling party.

No one has claimed responsibility, but the attack bears similarities to a suicide bombing the government blames on the Islamic State group that killed 33 Turkish and Kurdish peace activists near a town bordering Syria in July.

Police detained 14 suspected Islamic State members Sunday in the central Turkish city of Konya, but it wasn’t clear if they were related.

Some Turkish media declared that peace itself was under attack. The bombers struck hours before Kurdish rebels battling Turkish secu-

rity forces followed through with plans to declare a unilateral cease-fire, to reduce tensions leading up to Nov. 1 elections.

Turkey’s government rejected the declaration, saying the rebels must lay down arms for good and leave the country.

Turkey’s military meanwhile carried out more cross-border airstrikes against Kurdish shelters and positions in the Zap and Metina regions of Iraq.

While no one group has been ruled out in the bombings, government opponents blamed security forces for failing to protect the peace rally.

The Syrian government also has an interest in destabilizing Turkey, which has made no secret of its desire to see President Bashar Assad ousted.

Syrian troops gain as Putin defends strikes

By SARAH EL DEEB and LYNN BERRY The Associated Press BEIRUT – Syrian troops backed by Russian airstrikes advanced against insurgents in the center of the country as President Vladimir Putin defended Moscow’s intervention in the conflict, saying it would aid efforts to reach a political settlement.

Putin said Moscow’s objective was to stabilize the Syrian government and create conditions for a political compromise.

“When a division of international terrorists stands near the capital, then there is probably little desire for the Syrian government to negotiate, most likely feeling itself under siege in its own capital,” he said in

an interview with Russian state television broadcast on Sunday.

Critics of Russia’s intervention have argued that strengthening the government will only make compromise more difficult, and on Sunday the main Western-backed opposition group said the strikes would undermine any efforts to reach a settlement.

The Syrian National Coalition also said it would boycott talks suggested by U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura, saying any political process must be based on “ending the Russian aggression” and reviving a roadmap adopted in 2012.

The fighting Sunday was on multiple fronts in the northern part of the central Hama province and the nearby rebel-held Idlib province. A Syrian mili-

tary official said troops seized the northern Hama village of Tak Sukayk. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

It was the second village in the area captured by the government since it launched a wide-ranging ground offensive made possible by Russian airstrikes that began Sept. 30.

In an audio recording, a Saudi militant cleric based in Syria urged fighters to unite, mobilize and attack Syrian forces in different provinces in order to avert “consecutive collapses.”

Abdullah al-Muhaysini, who is linked to al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria, the Nusra Front, said the Russians aim to distract the insurgents on different fronts ahead of a surprise attack.

Opened in 2002 in a historic 1909 former church at 204 North Ottawa St., the museum not only holds the key to the Joliet area’s rich past, it serves as a center for community gatherings and educational activities.

The museum hosts more than 25,000 visitors annually, said Development Director Mike Brick.

“People know we’re here now,” said Brick. “One key thing people probably don’t know is that we’re the welcome center for Route 66 visitors from all over the world. We have a virtual digital sign-in guest book so we can track. In any given year we’ll receive visitors from over 35 countries and 38 states.”

Interactive exhibits take visitors back in time to when the family loaded in the car for an exciting cross-country adventure. Visitors can take a seat at the Route 66 Drive-in, get acquainted with Jake and Elwood Blues and rest up at a Ho-

tel Room complete with Magic Fingers.

Visitors can also view the exhibit of Joliet-raised NASA engineer and JJC graduate John C. Houbolt, honored as the chief conceptualizer of the lunar orbit rendezvous segment of the U.S. Apollo program and the use of a lunar module to shuttle astronauts to and from the moon’s surface.

“He was one of the main reasons we landed on the moon in 1969,” Brick said. “A lot of stories are Joliet-based but impact the nation and the world.”

Another exhibit features the Illinois & Michigan Canal, which, in 1848 joined the Chicago River with the Illinois River, providing a link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

The four-floor museum, with an open-air rooftop, fullstage auditorium and more, also serves as a venue for concerts, programs, shows, craft beer tastings and private events.

So far, Sharp and his staff have been able to plug in capable replacements when starters have been injured.

Lincoln-Way Central’s girls seek more history

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com After making history by winning their program’s first conference and regional titles in 20 years, Lincoln-Way Central’s girls golfers will be trying to put a halt to another long streak.

The Knights last qualified for state as a team in 1976, and that’s what they’ll be pursuing when they compete in Monday’s Class AA Neuqua Valley Sectional at Naperbrook Golf Course in Naperville.

But the task will be difficult, considering that coach Brian Shannon’s squad has to get past qualifiers from the Waubonsie Valley, Hinsdale South and Marian Catholic regionals.

The top three teams and 10 best individuals from nonqualifying teams will advance to compete in this weekend’s state finals at the Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur.

The Knights won Wednesday’s Plainfield Central Regional by 18 strokes over Lockport after posting a 325 total.

Providence Catholic was the other team that qualified.

In the regional, the Knights were led by freshmen medalist Brianne Bolden, who shot a 68, and by classmate Grace Curran, who took third. Providence’s Alyssa Gromala – who was a state qualifier last year – was second with a 71 and Lockport’s Melanie Loeffler took fourth.

Elsewhere in the sectional, Neuqua Valley, led by twotime defending state champion Jessica Yuen, who lives in Bolingbrook, prevailed at Waubonsie Valley.

Defending team champion Hinsdale Central – which returns five of six players from

last year’s squad – fired a 295 to win by 32 strokes at Hinsdale South and Sandburg shot a 302 to claim a 40-stroke win at Marian Catholic.

Beside the three qualifying area teams at Plainfield Central, 10 individuals also advanced, including four from Lincoln-Way West and three from Lincoln-Way East.

In another Class AA sectional meet, Minooka will be competing at the Normal Community Sectional at Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club.

In Class A, Seneca earned a spot in the Nazareth Academy Sectional, which will be at the Village Greens Golf Course in Woodridge. Two other area players also will be there in hopes of reaching the finals at Decatur’s Red Tail Run Golf Club.

On the boys side, three teams and 13 individuals from area schools will be taking part in the Class 2A Nazareth Academy Sectional, which is at Broken Arrow Golf Club.

Lemont, which edged Marian Catholic, 312-314, for top honors at its own regional, hopes to continue its streak of advancing to state in each year that it competes in Class 2A. In the regional, coach Mark Hollatz’s Indians were led by Raymond Sullivan, who tied for third.

Joliet Catholic Academy advanced to its eighth-straight sectional with medalist Jake Pluth leading the way with a 72. Morris also advanced to the Nazareth Sectional as returning state qualifier Nick McPherson tied for second place in the Pontiac Regional.

Lincoln-Way West didn’t qualify as a team but advanced all six players to the Nazareth

Sectional, while Coal City qualified five. The Class 2A finals will be at ISU’s Weibring Club.

In Class 3A, Providence goes in as one of the favorites in the Alton Sectional at Spencer Olin Golf Course after it won the Homewood-Flossmoor Regional by a 301-312 margin over the hosts, while Lincoln-Way Central also advanced. The Celtics’ Jack Walsh shot a 73 and won medalist honors over the Knights’ Matt Kadubek in a two-hole playoff.

Coach John Platt’s Celtics return two players from last year’s state squad, which finished fourth. They are Ricky Costello, who placed sixth individually, and Michael Cascino.

Lincoln-Way Central’s Anthony Bolden, Brianne’s brother, also went to state last year.

Minooka, which competed in the Normal Community Regional, also advanced as a team to the Alton Sectional. Lincoln-Way East qualified four individuals, while Joliet Township has three qualifiers for the same competition.

Lockport advanced as a team for the Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional at St. Andrews Club in West Chicago. It will be joined there by seven area individuals, including four from Plainfield North. The 3A finals are at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

In Class 1A, Dwight’s co-op with Gardner-South Wilmington earned a spot in the El Paso-Gridley Sectional at the El Paso Golf Club. Four individuals, including three from Seneca, will take part in the Byron Sectional at Prairie View Golf Course in Byron. The Class 1A finals will be at Bloomington’s Prairie Vista Golf Course.

CONCORD, N.C. – Joey Logano has been to victory lane four times this season, and all four trips required him to beat reigning Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick.

The latest win, Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, was a critical and confidence-building victory. He again shrugged off Harvick to earn an automatic berth into the third round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Harvick, who has 11 second-place finishes this season, has been runner-up to Logano three times. Harvick finished third in Logano’s win at Watkins Glen, where Harvick ran out of gas while leading on the last lap.

“When you can beat (Harvick) any day, any time, that’s a big deal for us,” team owner Roger Penske said. “I think that it was good that we could at least be on a level playing field with him today.”

Harvick led 581 laps in the opening round of the Chase and routed the field last week at Dover to advance into the second round. But he never made it to the front at Charlotte, the opening race of the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs, as Logano led 227 of the 334 laps.

Now Logano, who made it to the finale last season, doesn’t have to worry about this daunting second round of the Chase. The series races next week at Kansas and then four drivers will be eliminated Oct. 25 at Talladega.

“It helps us sleep here the next couple of weeks,” Logano said. “This helps us recharge our batteries and get ready for the next round.”

He feels good right now, but isn’t crowing about his headto-head success this season with Harvick.

Bears’ rebuilding a bit ahead of schedule It was Stephen Stills who wrote and Buffalo Springfield that sang, “There’s something happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear.”

It was December 1966. and although Stills clearly had a very different subject matter in mind, the lyrics that became an anthem from Buffalo Springfield for the peace movement of the ’60s absolutely apply to the 2015 Bears through five weeks of the season.

In a game the Bears shouldn’t have won and seemingly couldn’t win, they took a huge step forward as a team and as an organization with their improbable 18-17 win Sunday over Kansas City.

The Chiefs had a lot more talent on the field than the Bears did, and who knows what happens if Jamaal Charles doesn’t go down or if Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith hadn’t done his best Jonathan Quinn imitation for the better part of the game?

But the bottom line is the

With the Bears playing without Alshon Jeffery, Eddie Royal, Jermon Bushrod, Will Montgomery and Antrel Rolle, the Charles injury is irrelevant.

The Chiefs should have hammered the Bears, with or without him.

Sure, Smith stunk, but I’ve broadcast enough of Smith’s games, including the Chiefs 45-44 loss to the Colts in a 2013 AFC wild-card game, to know Smith is capable of playing like an All-Pro. Vic Fangio and his guys had a ton to do with Smith’s woeful performance.

After looking like they were going to be blown out with the second half coming to an end, the Bears stopped Jeremy Maclin 3 yards short of a first down at their 16 and forced a field goal to make it a 17-3 game.

Next, the Chiefs took the second-half kickoff 71 yards on 13 plays only to have McPhee block a 27-yard Cairo Santos field-goal attempt, and the Bears’ defense took over from there.

Fangio started dialing up pressures that included Houston and Young, and each garnered their first QB sacks of the season.

Porter had another excellent game in coverage, primarily on Jeremy Maclin, who was held to 85 yards on eight catches after back-toback monster games with double-digit catches and more than 140 yards in each. The Bears’ kiddie corps at safety of Adrian Moss and Harold Jones-Quartey again avoided

the spotlight and made enough plays to get another win.

Fangio is clearly an excellent coach who is making this defense far bigger and better than the sum of its parts.

At the end of the day, however, the main plot line in the Bears’ heroic victory over the Chiefs is once again the play of Jay Cutler.

Sure, Matt Forte’s huge, but he’s an All-Pro giving the team what it expects.

Martellus Bennett struggled in Kansas City, and although Marquess Wilson, Josh Bellamy and Cameron Meredith all made big plays, none have done enough to convince us they have futures with the team.

Hroniss Grasu went from awful to impressive in 60 minutes, and Kyle Long was outstanding.

But for the better part of Sunday, Cutler was an elite quarterback. Who can honestly say they saw that coming?

Is it thanks to Adam Gase?

John Fox? It “ain’t exactly clear” yet, but they’re obviously not hurting.

And here’s one more thought. Eddie Goldman, Grasu, Jeremy Langford, Amos, Patrick Omameh, McPhee, Acho, Jones-Quartey, Porter and other contributors all have one thing in common – none of them were here last year.

It seems Ryan Pace has something to do with this as well.

Hear me folks, it’s early.

This still is a .500 team on its best day. Not every Sunday will go the way this one did.

But what’s happening here is that Pace and Fox know they’ve got a rebuild on their hands, and their plan might just be a little bit ahead of schedule right now.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – The Kansas City Royals were the darlings of last year’s postseason, making an unlikely run to the World Series.

This year, another young, exciting team is on the brink of sending them home.

Dallas Keuchel remained perfect at home with seven gutsy innings and Chris Carter homered Sunday, leading the Houston Astros to a 4-2 win over the Royals to take a 2-1 edge in the American League Division Series.

The Astros could wrap up the best-of-five matchup with a win Monday over the defending AL champions in Game 4.

“You got to go out and win tomorrow,” manager Ned Yost said. “So, you just don’t have much leeway now, but our guys, I think, are up to the task and tomorrow will be an exciting day.”

Keuchel, who shut down the Yankees in the AL wild-card game, worked out of jam after jam, allowing five hits and one run with seven strikeouts after going 15-0 at home this season, a modern major league record.

Yost knows just how good Keuchel is after tapping the lefty to start for the AL in this year’s All-Star game.

Kenya’s Chumba, Kiplagat win titles

By JACK MCCARTHY The Associated Press CHICAGO – Kenyans Dickson Chumba and Florence Kiplagat each pulled away late to sweep the Chicago Marathon titles Sunday.

Chumba broke out of a threeman pack around the 23rd mile and easily outdistanced the field for his first Chicago Marathon victory.

Kiplagat, 28, also won her first Chicago title, finishing in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 33 seconds.

Chumba, 29, completed the 26.2-mile course in 2:09:25, while fellow Kenyan Sammy Kitwara was 25 seconds back for his second consecutive runner-up finish in Chicago.

The runners were slowed down by headwinds late in the race, but Chumba was able to

pull away then had the wind at his back at the end.

“I tried to push, but the wind (was) coming,” he said. “It was a problem.”

Kitwara couldn’t close the gap.

“My legs were not moving anymore at times,” he said.

Sammy Ndungu completed Kenya’s podium sweep.

Kiplagat, the half marathon world-record holder, beat Ethiopian Yebrgual Melese by 10 seconds. Birhane Dibaba of Ethiopia was third.

Kiplagat, third at Chicago last year, briefly laid down on the asphalt after finishing then rose with a bright smile and jumped in celebration.

“I love my kids and I told them when I win I’ll jump,” said Kiplagat, who has two daughters.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve

been in position No. 1.”

Kiplagat’s last marathon win came in Berlin in 2013.

Joan Benoit Samuelson, marking the 30th anniversary of a record-setting Chicago run, was a late scratch because of illness.

She had hoped to finish within 30 minutes of her 1985 time of 2:21:21.

Deena Kastor, the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and the 2005 Chicago champion, led parts of the race at age 42 before finishing seventh in 2:27:47 as the top U.S. woman. Luke Puskedra was the top American man with a fifthplace finish in 2:10:24.

Sunday’s race was the first without pace-setters, which officials said would result in a more competitive but slower event with record-breaking performances less likely.

Declarer’s maneuvers in the trump suit

Mark Twain said, “Tell the truth or trump – but get the trick.”

A bridge player will happily trump if it gains a trick, but there are times when winning that one trick costs two in the future. This week, we will look at declarer’s efforts to gain extra trump tricks and to avoid losing tricks unnecessarily.

In this deal, for example, South is in four hearts. West leads his fourth-highest spade. East wins with the ace and returns the spade four. Should South discard a club loser or ruff?

In the auction, North showed a balanced 18-19 points with his two-notrump rebid.

Then South bid what he hoped he could make. Note that if South had chosen to rebid three no-trump, the defenders would have had a chance at a plus score. East would have had to lead a spade. Then West would have had to take the trick and shift to the club queen or nine – a very tough assignment.

In four hearts, South starts with nine top tricks: six hearts and three diamonds.

And if he pitches a club on the second spade, he will establish a spade trick in the dummy. But there is a potential bee in the balm. West will take the trick and can shift to a club. If East holds the club ace, the contract will fail.

Instead, South should trump at trick two, draw trumps, and try to run the diamonds.

When they split 3-3, the contract is assured.

But if the diamonds are 4-2 or worse, declarer trumps the last spade or diamond in his hand and leads a club in the hope that West has the ace.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor suspects I have rheumatoid arthritis. He wants me to see a rheumatologist. How should I prepare for this appointment?

Dear Reader: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-lasting inflammatory disease that causes painful, stiff, swollen joints. If you do have RA, it’s best to diagnose the condition early. Disease-modifying treatment, started as soon as possible, can slow or prevent the disease from wreaking havoc on your joints. (I’ve put an illustration showing the effects of RA on my website, www. askdoctork.com.)

Either your primary care doctor or a rheumatologist (a doctor who specializes in arthritis) will evaluate you. He or she will be looking for the symptoms and signs of RA, as well as other types of arthritis, such as that caused by lupus and gout, which can have similar symptoms.

The doctor will conduct a physical examination.

He or she will look for swelling, tenderness, warmth, limited motion and certain deformities in your joints. You likely will have blood tests and you may have imaging tests – X-rays and possibly MRI scans or ultrasound studies. There is nothing you need to do to prepare for these tests.

But there is one important area in which you do need to prepare. The doctor will ask you lots of detailed questions about the one thing you know, and the doctor cannot know without asking you: your symptoms. What your symptoms are, when they first began and how they’ve changed over time will provide clues that are crucial to determining your diagnosis.

So give some thought to the questions below, and be prepared to discuss them at your appointment: • How would you describe your symptoms?
