JOLIET – Cash flow at the Rialto Square Theatre has come a long way since May, when the theater was getting late notices from Nicor because it couldn’t pay the gas bill on time.

On Wednesday, the Rialto board heard the theater had a cash balance of $364,000.

Not only is Nicor getting paid, but the Rialto is beating its projected cash balance for September by about $125,000.

Probably, the biggest factor in the turnaround was a $300,000 advance from the city of Joliet on the final two payments of the city’s annual $600,000 contribution to the Rialto.

But Rialto General Manager Randy Green said he believed the theater was on a sound fi-

nancial footing for the remainder of 2015.

“I’m pretty confident,” Green said, comparing the remainder of the year to the situation in May. “That was merely the cash flow issue that was tied into the fact that we had to return Ed Czerkies’ money.”

Czerkies donated $350,000 for a new marquee that was stopped in mid-construction amid a popular uprising against the design of the new sign. Opponents also objected to a tribute to Czerkies’ parents on the marquee, which contributed to the donor eventually taking back his money.

The Rialto had spent $171,000 on the marquee, leading to the cash flow problem that now appears to have been checked. The marquee problem also contributed to a $9,000 loss at the end of the Rialto’s fiscal year in July.

Big repairs still needed

Even with the improved cash flow, Green said the financial problems created by the marquee situation have not been completely washed away.

“I’m weathering it,” he said.

“But it’s inhibiting us from taking care of some other issues like the chimney.”

As winter gets closer, the Rialto chimney needs repairs estimated at more than $200,000.

Green said the theater expects the chimney to make it through another winter.

Meanwhile, the Rialto still has not solved the marquee issue either.

Popular Forest Preserve District events could end under 2016 spending plan

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County will end popular events like Cruise the Creek and Ride the Rock under a 2016 proposed spending plan approved Wednesday by the district’s Finance Committee.

The full board still has to approve the final budget, which would eliminate some of the big events the district is known for. Although smaller, more manageable events will take shape for visitors, the move to end the large-scale events comes at a time when district officials are trying to stave off budget deficits.

“The changes were in response to staff reductions, increased compensatory time, liabilities, events that grew too large for their site, and also some concerns over visitor safety,” Ralph Schultz, the district’s director of planning and operations, told board commissioners Wednesday.

The proposed end of large events – coupled with the district’s early retirement program – is part of its five-year plan to save money as it ceases

its land acquisition program and shifts toward maintenance of existing property.

Some argued the events should remain given the popularity, but Executive Director Marcy DeMauro noted the “true costs” have gotten out of hand in spite of sponsorship offsets. With fewer staff members next year, the events – in which participation numbers range from 1,600 to 2,000 in peak years – are not doable, she said.

Events that are now annual were initially designed to be one-time affairs to spark interest in new preserves as the district developed them under its acquisition program.

Schultz said the district will take on new events – such as a Moonlight Concert Series – to promote the district’s various preserves.

Holding off on merit-based raises

Both nonunion and union employees will receive a 2.75 percent pay raise – effective July 1 – under the budget proposed Wednesday. An earlier budget draft also included additional transitional and merit-based raises for employees

entering new roles and taking on more responsibilities with a reduced workforce.

But newly appointed Finance Committee Chairman Ray Tuminello said he wants to hold off on those, citing concerns about giving advanced raises before the district’s restructuring efforts can be evaluated.

“This budget has eliminated the entire reclassification and market study adjustments, saving the district approximately an additional $200,000 from the original proposed budget outlined last month,” Tuminello said. “I have asked to reassess the performance of the employees with respect to the [Early Retirement Program] in a sixmonth period to ensure that the job can be done with less individuals.”

The $46.9 million budget proposed Wednesday includes funds for annual operations, infrastructure maintenance and debt services.

Tuminello said with the lower 2016 levy of $18.9 billion, homeowners whose property is valued at $200,000 should expect to pay $9.31 less for the district’s portion of their property tax bill.

The Rialto is trying to use parts of the marquee that was being built by Landmark Sign Group. But the theater will look for another donor to fund the renovation costs, which are still to be determined, Green said.

Improved ticket sales

The financial outlook since May also has been brightened by brisk ticket sales.

Contributing to the earlier financial problems were unexpectedly weak ticket sales at the start of the 2014-15 season.

This year, ticket sales are better than expected.

“I think the projected ticket sales here are low,” Financial Manager Dale Evans told the board Wednesday while discussing why cash balances are so far ahead of projections.

Lincoln-Way West participants form teams online, earn points

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The classroom isn’t the only place Lincoln-Way West High School students are discussing books this school year – they’re also talking about them on Twitter.

West student Lesley-Anne Hicks is reading a book called “The Good Girl” by Mary Kubica and tweeting about it with other students who also are reading it. Students like her use hashtags to keep track of their discussions.

“It makes it competitive, so you want to read the book and want to tweet about it,” she said. “It makes you want to read more.”

Hicks is one of many students participating in the Read and Tweet program developed by West librarian Jennifer Bromann-Bender and library assistant Kamme Oler. They launched the program this fall to increase student reading by having participants generate interest in books through social media sites such as Twitter.

“Since [students] are using social media more, we decided to try to use the format they are familiar with to get them to discuss what they are reading,” Bromann-Bender said.

Students are encouraged to form a group of six and choose a book to read together, according to a news release from the school. Each group develops a hashtag that uses its team number and a phrase related to the book team members are reading.

A hashtag is used to convey the subject a user is writing about so it can be indexed and accessed in other users’ feeds.

Students who tweet about the books receive points: One point is given for each tweet, retweet or favorite. The program has weekly challenges for students to earn bonus

She said the students don’t have to participate in Read and Tweet in school. They also can do so at home or anywhere else.

Social media has become dominant in the lives of

teens, with 57 percent of all teens making friends online, according to the Pew Research Center. According to the center, 72 percent of all teens spend time with friends through social media and 23 percent do so daily.

Because of social media, teens feel more connected to their friends’ feelings and also offer support during challenging times, according to the Pew Research Center.

Educators also have started to use social media more in the classroom.

Teachers have had students write blog posts about what they are learning, use

Facebook to provide feedback on classroom projects and create Twitter accounts for projects, according to Edutopia, a website by the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

Teachers also have encouraged students to use YouTube to host a show or podcast on classwork.

West student Gage Frederiksen, who has been scoring the most points in Read and Tweet, said the program motivates him to read outside class.

“It’s also awesome because our librarian suggests books to us, which is really, really cool,” he said.

The Scholars Group strengthens learning Washington Junior High recognizes academic success of black male students More online

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Daquan Williams was given a red-striped tie to wear Wednesday, representing his success in a School District 86 program that helps black male students achieve academic excellence.

Williams, a seventh-grader at Washington Junior High School and Academy, was one of about a dozen students in the same grade who were given a tie as part of the The Scholars Group program.

Principal Michael Latting helped him put on the tie for the first time.

“I was excited, but I was a little bit nervous,” Williams said of the program, which was created in the 2013-14 school year. “But I thought over the year, it worked out well.”

Wednesday was The Scholars Group tie and blazer ceremony. Students in sixth through eighth grades were recognized by their parents and Joliet Public Schools District 86 officials for their success in the program. Seventh-graders received the ties while eighth-graders got red blazers.

At the end of the 2014-15 school year, all students in The Scholars Group saw their grades improve, and 65 to 75 percent made the honor roll one or more times during the year. Since the program started, membership has grown from 15 to 40 students.

Latting mentioned the old saying, “It takes a village to

raise a child,” during the ceremony.

“At this school, we are the village,” he said.

The Scholars Group was created to combat poor test results from black male students at the school, especially in reading. The program is not a social club but an academically driven group.

Teacher and Scholar Adviser Wil Seegars said under the

Illinois Standards Achievement Test, black male students ranked the lowest at the school.

He said research shows students who leave the fourth grade struggling to have a solid foundation in reading are in danger of falling victim to the “school-to-prison” pipeline.

The phenomenon is a national trend where underprivileged children are funneled

out of public schools and into juvenile and criminal justice systems instead of receiving additional educational and counseling services, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

“We realized if we did not begin to do some things to reverse it, we might put ourselves in a situation of possibly losing our young men,” Seegars said.

Latting said the school takes pride in educating its male students.

“These young men are the people that one of these days will be sitting in these chairs right here,” Latting said, pointing to where Coleman, O’Dekirk and Morris were seated. “You see, they come to us as sixth-graders and they’ll all tell you they came in as boys. But when they leave Washington, they will be young men.”

Joliet District 86 to host superintendent search forum at 2 schools

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A company assisting Joliet Public Schools District 86 will hold forums this month to search for the next superintendent at two schools.

Iowa-based Ray & Associates will have open forums from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lynne Thigpen Elementary School, 207 Midland Ave., and Isaac Singleton Elementary School, 1451 Copperfield Ave. The forums are open to all Joliet residents.

Ray & Associates is assisting District 86 officials in the search for the next leader of the district after Superintendent Charles Coleman announced in June he plans to retire next summer.

District 86 Board of School Inspectors President Gwendolyn Ulmer said residents who come to the forums will be given a questionnaire listing 33 qualities they would look for in the new superintendent. Of those qualities, they will pick their top 10.

not have a completion date scheduled for the superintendent search. Candidate interviews may start as early as December, she said.

Ray & Associates will find superintendent candidates based in part on information from the surveys and forums.

Ulmer said board inspectors already have submitted to the company their criteria for the superintendent.

Besides board inspectors, district staff also have been interviewed by Ray & Associates for the search, she said.

“Working with Ray & Associates thus far has been very good. We told them what we liked, and part of that would be having the community being involved,” Ulmer said.

Ray & Associates was selected Sept. 2 by board inspectors to be the search firm.

District officials will pay $18,000 as a base fee, according to the company’s approved contract. The fee will be paid in three installments, with the final payment due during the month the new superintendent is officially hired.

Joliet wins recycling award JOLIET – The city of Joliet won top honors from local clothing recycler USAgain for municipal leadership with an award for “Outstanding Ordinance to Support Recycling.”

During the 2015 Green-T Award ceremony held recently at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, USAgain recognized Joliet for its work in making the city’s clothing recycling infrastructure more effective, according to a news release from the city.

The city passed an ordinance earlier this year that improves recycling efforts by regulating collection boxes through a much-needed permit process.

The Green-T Awards reward individuals and organizations that support recycling and sustainability in Illinois. In partnerships with cities, local businesses and nonprofit organizations, USAgain hosts 1,100 recycling bins in the Chicago area that diverted 7 million pounds of textiles from going into landfills in 2014 alone.

The city would define the boundaries of the SSAs, the maximum tax rate and how long they would exist.

The city would hold public hearings on the SSAs. Objectors in a proposed SSA could petition within 60 days after the public hearing to stop it. They would need signatures from at least 50 percent of property owners of record and 51 percent of electors residing in the proposed SSA. is trying to start two SSAs next year. One would be along Jefferson Street. The other would be in a large section of the south end of the city, including CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet, Hollywood Casino and Chicagoland Speedway.

Councilman Pat Mudron said at the end of the meeting where the discussion took place that the SSA plan appeared to be a good idea would be accepted by the business community. But Mudron said Tuesday he has received several phone calls from business people who question the plan, and he has begun to question it himself.

Mudron said other business districts may not have the same common cause as the downtown business area.

“My thought on what I need on my end of the Jefferson Street corridor as opposed to what they need on the other end might be different,” Mudron said.

A proposed SSA must first be presented at a public hearing, according to a memo distributed by Hock. Businesses in the district would have the opportunity to stop the SSA with a petition drive.

Some other areas proposed

by Hock include the Louis Joliet Mall area, Route 59, Larkin Avenue and Ruby Street.

JOLIET – Businesses want to know more about a proposal to create special taxing districts, and city officials are set to meet Thursday with representatives from the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry to discuss it.

City officials last week unveiled a plan to create several Special Service Areas around Joliet starting in two areas as soon as next year. The SSAs would create new property tax revenues that would be put back into business districts to foster economic development, city officials said.

News of the plan has generated phone calls to the Chamber from people who want to know what is going on. The Chamber received about a dozen calls from businesses, President Mary Jaworski said.

“Mostly just questions,” she said of the nature of the calls.

Jaworski said she and other Chamber representatives will find out more Thursday when they meet with Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and City Manager Jim Hock.

“It’s mostly a fact-finding mission,” Jaworski said. “A lot of people don’t even know how an SSA works.”

SSAs create special taxing districts for designated areas.

A special property tax applied only to that district raises money to be used for the area.

Such districts have been used to fund street improvements in neighborhoods. An SSA was created for downtown Joliet years ago and is used to fund the City Center Partnership, which provides incentives to aid business development and holds special events, including Race Face Rally, aimed at promoting the downtown business district.

Despite the recent string of main breaks, Burris said the total number has decreased significantly since last year.

“Last year through the same period we had 25,” Burris said.

“This year, we have nine.”

The city went through a

stretch of 177 days between water main breaks from February through August.

“That’s unprecedented,” Burris said.

Mayor Ray Soliman said the main breaks are ultimately the result of old water facilities.

“We’ve unusually had several water main breaks recently,” Soliman said. “The infrastructure is 50 to 60 years old. We’re addressing it, making improvements to the well house.”

Burris also said residents should look out for hydrant flushing from Nov. 1 to Nov. 20.

CREST HILL – Preparation work for the reconstruction of the Oakland Avenue well tower in Crest Hill has caused several recent water main breaks and boil order notices in the city.

However, the overall number of main breaks this year is less than half of last year, Interim Director of Public Works Paul Burris said.

Burris said the city has been exercising valves in certain areas of the tower, which has caused “water hammer” damage to water mains six times in September.

“We’ve sent out letters to the residents well before the

work started, telling them what we’re doing,” he said.

Burris said the valve work was necessary to prepare for work on the well tower, which includes a new well house, control system, pump and piping that hasn’t been updated since the 1960s.

Water hammer damage occurs when a surge of water pressure in a system causes water mains not strong enough for that pressure to break.

“Right now we’re anticipating everything needed to prepare for reconstruction is done,” Burris said.

JOLIET – The Will County Center for Community Concerns announced this week that funds are available to assist income-eligible households in the county with winter utility bills.

Starting Oct. 1, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will accept applications for households with a family member 60 or older or who receives Social Security disability benefits.

Starting Nov. 2, households whose service has been disconnected for nonpayment, as well as those with a child younger than 6, may apply. Starting Dec. 1, the program will available to all income-eligible Will County households. Applications will be taken through May 31 or until funding is exhausted.

LIHEAP Emergency Furnace Assistance is available to low-income households whose existing heating systems are not operational or have been red-tagged by a utility company.

Households must be at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty

level to enroll. Applications will be taken at Will County Center for Community Concerns, 2455 Glenwood Ave. in Joliet, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or until the daily sign-in sheet is full.

Later she went to industrial nursing at Corn Products where she met her husband, George. After marrying and having their daughter, Cindy, the family moved to a farm in Elwood. Joyce was a self taught “farm lady”. It was at this farm where they were at their happiest in life finding great joy in gardening, tending their land and living a simple life.

Born September 11, 1957 in Chicago, George was a graduate of the class of 1975 at Lockport Township High School, and if you didn’t know him personally, you undoubtedly heard his ‘57 Ford roaring through Homer Township and at the US 30 Dragstrip.

He went on to study at Denver Automotive and Diesel College, and upon graduating, worked at Fairbanks Morse in Beloit, Wisconsin, and later, at General Motors Electro-motive Division in La Grange, Illinois. In 1980, he joined Paul & Mike’s Transmissions in Joliet, certified in tune-ups and brakes, where he later became the shop’s most respected service manager for over 30 years, and finally, as the proud owner in 2014.

He loved American muscle cars and recently rekindled his interest in motorcycles, fixing up his 1983 Honda CB1000.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George Charles and Noreen (Caddy) Mormann; his godmother, Dorothy Walker (Mormann); and his daughter and guardian angel, Bettina Louise.

He is survived by the love of his life, Elizabeth Louise Wagner; his cherished children, Kaleena Rose and George Thomas “G.T.”; his siblings, Maureen Simpson, Jeffrey Sarah (McCarthy), Phil Nancy (Gillogly), Edwin Dorianne of La Mesa, California; his uncle, Harry Walker; cousin, Paula Walker; and his sisters-in-law, Susan (Wagner) Rasek and Laura Wagner; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Ames White, age 51, of Chicago, formerly of Joliet/ Plainfield, courageously battled liver cancer and lymphoma only to be senselessly murdered in his home August 31, 2015.

Lloyd was born December 4, 1963 in Joliet, the son of Laurence and Nancy (nee Hodges) White. He graduated from Plainfield schools, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bradley University and became a Certified Public Accountant from University of Illinois. He was currently employed as Chief Financial Officer of The Scion Group, LLC. Lloyd enjoyed planning and taking many memorable trips to the National Parks, Canada, Germany, Italy, Hungary, France and England.

He enjoyed hiking, photography and observing the world around him.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy of Joliet, IL; beloved sister, Laura of Paxton, IL; half-brother, Laurence Jr. of Lodi, CA; half-sister, Kimberly (Timothy) Gregory of Shorewood, IL; special aunt, Myrtis (nee Hodges) Bowler of The Woodlands, TX; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Laurence; grandparents, Laurence and Irene White; grandparents, Arthur and Florence Hodges; and dear brother, Robert Van Kooten.

Preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen (nee McCauley) Zimmerman; his parents, Wilbur and Mathilda Zimmerman.

Veteran of the U.S. Army in Korea and on the Pistol Team in HI. He married Kathleen McCauley in 1958. Retired after 32 years from the post office as a letter carrier. A natural song and dance man. On his 5th Birthday he performed “Swanee River” during Pearl Harbor.

He played accordion, dabbled in banjo and ukulele and could “rock the hell” out of a sweet potato. He loved fishing, golfing and camping. A die hard Chicago Bears season ticket holder and “Master of Tailgate Chef,” as evidence

Leading jazz alto saxophonist Phil Woods dies at age 83

By CHARLES J. GANS The Associated Press NEW YORK – Phil Woods, a leading alto saxophonist in mainstream jazz for more than 60 years whose piercing solos also could be heard on hit records by Billy Joel and Paul Simon, has died. He was 83.

Woods died Tuesday in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, said Philip Bensing, owner of the Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home.

Woods gave his last concert on Sept. 4 in Pittsburgh, using oxygen to complete a performance of the classic album “Charlie Parker With Strings” with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. That night he announced he had emphysema and was retiring.

Woods grew up in the Swing Era where his early influences included alto saxophonists Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges. He made his name as a fiery disciple of bebop pioneer Charlie “Bird” Parker, earning the nickname “the new Bird” after Parker’s untimely death in 1955. He was married to Parker’s widow, Chan, for 17 years.

Woods released more than 50 albums as a leader and many more as a sideman with such jazz luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and Clark Terry.

He won four Grammys.

But Woods perhaps was best known outside the jazz world for his alto sax solo at the end of Joel’s 1977 hit recording “Just the Way You Are.” He also performed on recordings by Paul Simon (“Have a Good Time”) and Steely Dan (“Doctor Wu”).

Philip Wells Woods was born on Nov. 2, 1931 in Springfield, Mass. After inheriting an alto sax from his uncle, he began taking lessons at the age of 12. As a teenager in 1945, he heard Parker’s bebop recordings with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

“It was some truly new music and just completely freaked me out,” Woods recalled in a 1992 AP interview.

After graduating high school, he moved to New York where he studied classical music by day at Juilliard and jazz in the clubs at night.

In the mid-1950s, Woods began leading his own combos. He got his big break when Quincy Jones asked him

to join a 1956 State Department-sponsored world tour with Gillespie’s big band.

“There was a very specific reason Phil played on nearly every album I’ve made since 1956, because he not only was the best jazz alto sax player there was, he was a truly beautiful person,” Jones said in a statement released Tuesday.

Woods toured Europe with Jones’ big band in 1959, and three years later took part in Benny Goodman’s historic tour of Russia.

Back in the United States, Woods found fewer chances to play pure jazz and grew disenchanted with studio work.

In 1968, he moved to Europe where he formed his more adventurous European Rhythm Machine, which incorporated some electronic and free-jazz elements.

In the mid ’70s, Woods and his wife and manager, Jill Goodwin, settled in Delaware Water Gap in eastern Pennsylvania, where he co-founded the long-running Celebration of the Arts festival.

Woods, who also was a prolific composer and arranger, was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2007.

Catherine Coulson, who played Log Lady in ‘Twin Peaks,’ dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS ASHLAND, Ore. – Catherine E. Coulson, an actress best known as the quirky Log Lady in the TV series “Twin Peaks,” has died.

Amy Richard with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where Coulson appeared in 50 plays over the course of 22 seasons, said Coulson died Monday at her home in Ashland, Oregon. Coulson was 71 and had been battling cancer.

Richard said Coulson met “Twin Peaks” director David Lynch in the early 1970s at an acting workshop at the American Film Institute in

Los Angeles, and he cast her as a nurse in his movie “Eraserhead.” She also served as assistant director, still photographer and special effects technician on the film.

In 1990 Lynch cast her as Margaret in “Twin Peaks,” a mysterious woman who carries around a log.

Coulson grew up in California, where her mother was a ballet dancer and her father was a radio and TV producer who also worked in public relations. She earned a bachelor of arts in theater from Scripps College and a master of fine arts from San Francisco State University.

Festival artistic director Bill Rauch recalled Coulson was in the first play he directed at the festival, and her acceptance of him helped him fall in love with the company.

“Her generosity of spirit was only matched by her vibrancy as an actor,” Rausch said in a statement.

This season, Coulson had appeared as General Matilda B. Cartwright in “Guys and Dolls.”

Other film and TV credits include “Portlandia,” “Psych,” “Calvin Marshall,” “The Secret Life of Houses” and “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.”

Russia begins Syria airstrikes, but West is disputing targets

By NATALIYA VASILYEVA and JIM HEINTZ The Associated Press MOSCOW – Russia launched airstrikes Wednesday in Syria, sharply escalating Moscow’s role in the conflict but also raising questions about whether its intent is fighting Islamic State militants or protecting longtime ally, President Bashar Assad.

President Vladimir Putin called it a pre-emptive strike against the militants, and the Russian Defense Ministry said its warplanes targeted and destroyed eight positions belonging to extremists from the IS group, also known as ISIL or ISIS. It did not give specific locations.

But French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told lawmakers in Paris: “Curiously, they didn’t hit Islamic State. I will let you draw a certain number of conclusions yourselves.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter also said the Russians appeared to have targeted areas that did not include IS militants, and he complained Moscow did not use formal channels to give advance no-

tice of its airstrikes to Washington, which is conducting its own airstrikes in Syria against the Islamic State group.

He said the Russians should not be supporting the Assad government and their military moves are “doomed to fail.”

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed charges that Russian airstrikes in Syria targeted positions of the Syrian opposition. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, he said that the Russian Air Forces are cooperating with the Syrian pro-government military to target “exclusively” Islamic State targets.

“Rumors that the targets of these strikes were not IS positions were groundless,” he stressed, adding that the Russian Defense Ministry has clearly stated on its website the targets and objectives of Russian airstrikes in Syria.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington was prepared to welcome Russian military action in Syria as long as it is directed against IS and other al-Qaida affiliates, but would have “grave concerns” if it con-

ducted strikes against other groups.

The U.S. and Russia both agree on the need to fight the Islamic State but not about what to do with Assad. The Syrian civil war, which grew out of an uprising against Assad, has killed more than 250,000 people since March 2011 and sent millions of refugees fleeing to other countries in the Mideast and Europe.

Russia’s first airstrikes in Syria came after Putin met Monday with President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, where they discussed Moscow’s military buildup in the country.

Obama had said the U.S. and Russia could work together on a political transition, but only if the result was Assad’s departure.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the Russians’ new action “calls into question their strategy, because when President Putin and President Obama had the opportunity to meet at the U.N. earlier this week, much of their discussion was focused on the need for a political transition inside Syria.”

Home day care workers seek union dues repayment

ST. LOUIS – Home day care workers in Illinois are seeking a refund of millions of dollars in past payments in a federal lawsuit recently filed in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned a state requirement for nonunion home health workers to pay fair-share union fees.

The class-action lawsuit was brought by home day care owners Laura Baston of Casey and Sandy Winner of Jacksonville and names Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Service Employees International Union Healthcare Illinois & Indiana as defendants.

It comes as Rauner aggressively aims to curtail labor unions’ political influence.

The lawsuit said Illinois should repay what the conservative Illinois Policy Institute estimates was as much as $10 million in annual withholding of “agency fees” that were deducted from reimbursements for private contractors who cared for low-income children eligible to receive state support. The fees, which are not supposed to be used for political activity, had been collected since 2005 under an executive order by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The Supreme Court ruled, 5-4, in June 2014 that the union dues, which cover the costs of contract negotiations and grievance disputes, could not be collected from people who provided in-home care for people with disabilities who didn’t want to join the state employees’ union.

U. of Chicago gets $100M for global conflict center

CHICAGO – Citing a migration crisis that has displaced more people this year than at any time since World War II, entrepreneur brothers Thomas and Timothy Pearson said Wednesday their family foundation is giving $100 million to the University of

Chicago for a research institute aimed at using big data to study and resolve global conflicts.

University President Robert Zimmer said the donation from the Pearson Family Foundation matches the second largest gift in the school’s history. The funding establishes an institute at the Harris School of Public Policy, which will use data-driven research approaches to evaluate the effectiveness of public policy.

It will be called the Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts.

The Islamic State organization and other militant groups pose challenges that defy Cold War solutions, said Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, who hailed the announcement as “extraordinarily important” during an event on the Chicago campus.

The new institute will recommend strategies based on quantitative social science research on the interaction of military, economic, political and cultural factors. A yearly forum convening scholars and policy experts will be part of the effort.

Hearing on pipeline to Illinois begins in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. – Opponents in South Dakota of a proposed $3.8 billion pipeline to move North Dakota oil to Illinois said they worry it could contaminate water supplies and farmland, and harm habitat for wildlife, including endangered species.

South Dakota’s Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday began a two-week hearing on whether to permit the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The 1,130-mile Dakota Access Pipeline proposed by Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners would move at least 450,000 barrels of North Dakota crude daily through South Dakota and Iowa to an existing pipeline in Patoka, Illinois – about 70 miles east of East St. Louis – where shippers can access Midwest and Gulf Coast markets.

A Rosebud Sioux spokesman said the tribe worries pipeline construction or a pipeline spill would impact wildlife.

Dorothy Day, Mother Frances, and the pope “Thank God we have a Pope Paul who upholds respect for life – an ideal so lofty, so high, so important, even when it seems he has the whole Catholic world against him.”

That wasn’t someone forgetting the name of the current pope, but rather the activist Dorothy Day writing about Pope Paul VI and his letter on human life. Day was making clear where she stood on abortion and birth control: with the church.

I mention this because Pope Francis talked about Day in his historic address to Congress last week. And while most associate her with left-wing politics, that was not the women in full. The woman in full was one who encountered Jesus Christ regularly, seeking deeper conversion, not afraid to do the hard work of examining her conscience and serving others out of the love of God. Cardinal Timothy Dolan did not disguise his pleasure that Pope Francis held up this holy New Yorker before the nation and the world. Hosting the pope for an evening prayer service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dolan thanked him in Spanish, the Argentinian’s native tongue.

Sitting in St. Patrick’s that night, praying with Pope Francis and the thousands gathered there, I couldn’t help but think of one of the other holy women who lived in New York. Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini was an Italian-American missionary whose devotion to Jesus Christ brought her to build schools, hospitals and orphanages for immigrant Catholics at around the same time the cathedral on Fifth Avenue was being built.

Reading her travel diaries recently – letters to the sisters she’d left back home – I heard Pope Francis in her voice. During his homily, he talked about the dangers of falling into bad habits: “Our daily routine can often lead us to a kind of glum apathy which gradually becomes a habit, with a fatal consequence: Our hearts grow numb.”

Bad habits aren’t simply things to vow to correct with New Year’s resolutions; they can be poisons to the soul. They turn us, unwittingly, into practical atheists or lukewarm Christians.

Mother Cabrini wrote: “We have become vile, cowardly and many

She went onto say, “Virtue is mocked, and we are silent; truth is trampled upon, and nothing is said. But why the silence? Because we are vile.

We need to renew our faith, to stir up in our own hearts a love of the sublime principles of our holy religion.

“Let us not be afraid of offending those who approach us, nor fear of persistently speaking the truths of faith,” she wrote. “No, if we know how to conform ourselves to the true, sweet and gentle charity of Jesus, which is also strong and energetic, no one will be offended, but will rather be won over.”

How do we do that? That’s the walk the pope is trying to take us on.

In his United Nations speech, Pope Francis warned against ideological colonization, as he has before. It can distort our very identities, make us forget who we are. He talked about men and women and natural law at the U.N. No small thing. Yet, look at how he’s bringing people to the water of God’s laws and love: gently, as a tender father who knows what hell our hearts have been ravaged by. He knows our wounds, and will not pour salt into them, but apply a healing balm of alternatives and vision. This is the integral ecology he speaks of. This is a new, reintroduced vocabulary for us, by which we might actually communicate with one another again.

But back to Dorothy Day. Cardinal Dolan, as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, encouraged the advancement of Day’s sainthood during the pope’s visit. Earlier this year, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez said, “I don’t know if Dorothy Day is a saint, but she makes me want to be one.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Congress should aid many and extend important rail deadline

To the Editor: Come January, the nation might ring in 2016 with disruptions to rail service that will strand passengers and debilitate shippers and businesses from coast to coast.

The reason? The failure of Congress to extend a Dec. 31 deadline for the implementation of positive train control, a rail safety technology designed to slow or stop a train before certain accidents occur. Mandated

by Congress in 2008, PTC is the largest combined effort in transportation history.

Several railroads recently wrote Congress to highlight the constraints they face if the deadline is not extended. In addition to fines and penalties of up to $100,000 a day, freight railroads risk losing insurance coverage if they operate in violation of the law.

For Chicago, a rail stoppage would be potentially devastating. Metra’s busiest lines, which carry more than 169,000 passengers daily, would stop running. Our region, the busiest rail hub in America, would be ground zero for freight disruptions that would hurt rail customers – farmers, manufacturers, small businesses – across the country.

A disruption could have dramatic impacts for members of the Illinois

Manufacturers Association, who depend on rail service to receive raw materials necessary for manufacturing and for distributing products to the rest of the world.

Railroads are committed to PTC, already having spent nearly $6 billion on implementation with plans to spend $9 billion before the system is fully implemented. They have hired more than 2,400 signal-system personnel to install PTC and have deployed 69 percent of the nearly 33,000 wayside detectors required.

This progress, while substantial, is constrained by the sheer magnitude of the task. For PTC to work safely, it will need to be interoperable between railroads on more than 60,000 miles of track. Not to mention that the state-of-the-art technology was developed from scratch by a team of 10,000 experts including railroaders, manufacturers and designers.

To avoid an unnecessary rail stoppage, Congress should provide a reasonable and appropriate extension to the PTC deadline. An extension would allow railroads to continue to implement PTC, train employees and test the new system. It also would help all avoid the consequences of service disruptions.

MINOOKA REPEATS AS SPC CHAMPS

JOLIET – Minooka’s girls golf team used a familiar formula to not only repeat as Southwest Prairie Conference champion but also claim its seventh title in eight years.

The Indians placed four scores among the top six finishers in Wednesday’s tournament at Inwood Golf Course.

That helped Minooka shoot a 357, which was 34 strokes bet-

ter than runner-up Plainfield East. Plainfield North edged Plainfield South, 401-403, for third.

Minooka’s Maddie Erickson recovered from a 47 on the front nine to shoot a 39 and finish with an 86, which gave her medalist honors by a stroke over Plainfield North’s MacKenzie Wolendowski, who won the overall league title with 28 points.

Also for coach Joe Host’s Indians, Miranda Sharp and

Alli Lee had rounds of 90, while Lauren Goggins posted a 91. Hailey Arlis and McKayla Holmes both shot a 95.

“The girls have played well all year long, and once again they’re very competitive with each other and push each other,” Host said. “That’s showing in our scores, which are getting better and better, and we’re kind of peaking at the right time. We’d love to carry that over to the U of I (Champaign Centennial Regional)

and see what that gets us.

“We’re looking to get out of the regional again as a team and keep that streak going.

The girls have put in a lot of hard work in the offseason, and things are going well for us.”

Minooka had three all-conference selections, with Erickson moving past Sharp, 25.5-24, for third based on Wednesday’s performance, while Lee was sixth with 18.5 points.

bination of points for dual meets and the tournament.

“We all played really well,” Erickson said. “We’ve been shooting in the low- and mid40s, and even the JV team has seen improvement. I started out really rough. On Hole 2, I putted in for a par halfway across the green, but a girl didn’t pull the pin fast enough and I ended up with a twostroke penalty. But my back

Although Wolendowski fell a stroke shy of medalist honors, her second-place finish was the difference in giving her the league title over Plainfield Central’s Heather Bush, who shot a 90 to finish with 26 points. The two had been tied with 18 points based on dual meets.

“The cold weather was really bad and I couldn’t wear my jacket because it messes up my swing,” Wolendowski said. “And the wind just took my ball in totally different direction than what I wanted it.

I kept thinking about the cold instead of worrying about actual golf. As the round went on, I started getting used to it a little bit. It wasn’t too bad of a day. I’m happy with the way that I’ve been playing. I just need to get my putting a little better.”

of our girls didn’t have the greatest round, but because the depth that we have, other girls stepped up. We had multiple people who could score, like we have all year. We have girls who are excited to play the game.”

Plainfield South’s Amanda Granato shot a 93 to place her fifth in the overall standings with 21 points. Plainfield North’s Alexandra Mori also earned one of the 11 all-SPC spots after taking ninth with 10.5 points.

Early look at area playoff picture October has arrived. The high school football season has crossed the midway point. The time is right to begin reviewing playoff prospects for Joliet area schools.

The playoff outlook on the IHSA website indicates that if the playoffs were beginning now, a majority of teams with 3-2 records through Week 5 would be in, but some would not because of a shortage of playoff points (opponent victories).

History dictates the situation will be similar a month from now. Of the teams that finish 5-4, most probably will play in the postseason, but some will be left out.

The number of opponent victories needed to get in with a 5-4 record fluctuates year to year, but the likelihood is your team will need 38 or 39 points to feel safe.

Joliet Catholic and Wilmington are 5-0. They might not need to win any more games to qualify, but they will.

Our 4-1 teams are Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way East, Lemont and Minooka. With the exception of Minooka, all probably will be in with one more victory. The problem for the Indians is they have only 16 opponent victories, which is among the low figures in the state. Based on how things usually go, they must get at least six victories.

All our teams that are 3-2 and 2-3 are in iffy positions. They know they need to get to five wins, and in a couple of cases, getting to six is advisable. As you would expect, most have difficult games remaining.

Our 3-2 teams are Joliet West, Plainfield North, Morris, Coal City and

1. Joliet Catholic (5-0): Coming off huge, 41-3 victory over unbeaten Marian Central, the Hilltoppers must avoid a letdown against Marian Catholic.

2. Lincoln-Way East (4-1): The Griffins have won four straight, including last week’s 28-0 blanking of Bolingbrook. The defense is getting it done.

3. Lincoln-Way West (4-1): The Warriors battled back from 35-7 deficit against Thornton before falling, 35-28, for their first loss. Thornwood provides an opportunity to get back on track.

4. Lemont (4-1): The Indians took one of the South Suburban Blue’s unbeatens to task last week, whipping Tinley Park, 41-12. This week’s foe, Bremen, is 1-4.

5. Bolingbrook (2-3): The Raiders are struggling to find offensive consistency. They will try to get that situation corrected this week at Stagg.

6. Providence (2-3): The Celtics blanked St Rita, 28-0, and now they face the true Catholic League Blue heavyweight in Loyola. The math is simple. If the Celtics do not upset Loyola, they will have to win their last three games to qualify for the playoffs.

7. Plainfield North (3-2): The Tigers are a couple of tight losses away from being 5-0. The passing combination of JD Ekowa to Zach Jarosz has been effective.

8. Minooka (4-1): Indians quarterback John Carnagio has been spot on, completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 976 yards and nine touchdowns. Plainfield East is the next hurdle for See RANKINGS, page 21

Dwight. Plainfield North, Morris and Coal City beat the playoff cutoff at this juncture. Joliet West also does, but without much breathing room. Dwight definitely is short on points and will need six victories.

We also have three 1-4 teams in Lockport, Plainfield East and Romeoville. In a sense, the playoffs begin Friday night for them because as soon as they lose one more, they will be eliminated from playoff contention.

Bolingbrook, Plainfield South, Providence, Lincoln-Way Central, Peotone and Seneca are 2-3. Of course, none would qualify at this point because of their records, but all will qualify if they can get to five victories.

Getting in is one thing. The other element is you want to win as many games as possible because playoff seedings are based on record first, then opponent victories within each record.

Herscher enters 4-1 overall, having lost, 36-15, to Interstate Eight Large leader Manteno (5-0, 3-0). The Tigers have outscored their four opponents, 156-42, and their three league foes, 14726.

The Wildcats are led by senior all-state running back Nick Hawkins. He rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Class 3A champs in 2014. This season, he has rushed for 686 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

The 256 teams statewide that qualify will be placed in eight 32team classes. The IHSA will form two 16-team groups for Classes 1A through 6A. For the first time this year, and long overdue, the Class 7A and 8A fields will be in one 32-team bracket.

Class 3A: Wilmington (5-0, 21 opponent victories); Dwight (3-2, 18); Seneca (2-3, 24).

Class 4A: Coal City (3-2, 23 opponent victories); Peotone (2-3, 26).

Class 5A: JCA (5-0, 24 opponent victories); Morris (3-2, 24).

Class 6A: Lincoln-Way West (4-1, 23 opponent victories); Lemont (4-1, 24).

There are three bubbles in terms of class among our likely playoff qualifiers. With the right combination of qualifiers statewide, Morris could drop to Class 4A, Providence could slip to Class 6A, and Plainfield North could move up to Class 8A. Although none of those moves appears extremely likely at this time, stranger things have happened. As the IHSA always warns, which 32 teams are in each class will not be known until all 256 playoff qualifiers are known.

2. Coal City (3-2): The Coalers rebounded from a lopsided loss to Plano with a much-needed, 36-14 victory over Sandwich, as Nick Micetich threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns.

3. Peotone (2-3): The good thing about last week’s 41-21 loss is the Blue Devils got Manteno out of the way. Now they get another quality Interstate Eight Large foe as they travel to Plano.

WILMINGTON – Nineteen consecutive wins, including the Class 3A state championship in 2014.

Forty consecutive Interstate Eight Small victories, with seven consecutive conference championships.

All this will be put on the line Friday night as Wilmington coach Jeff Reents and his Wildcats travel to Herscher. A year ago, the Wildcats slipped past Herscher, 21-18, in Wilmington and went on to claim the conference and state titles.

It’s only Week 6, but on both schools’ websites, “The Game” has been designated as the conference championship game.

Wilmington is 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the I-8 Small. The Wildcats have outscored their five opponents, 177-48, and their three league opponents, 109-13. Their last conference loss was a 13-8 decision to Plano in Week 6

more than 200 yards each and have combined for seven touchdowns.

Quarterback Jeff Treadman has rushed for 100 yards and completed 4 of 5 passes for 40 yards in the multi-faceted Wildcat ground attack.

Herscher is led by quarterback Tyler Jones, who has completed 67 of his 100 passes for 736 yards and eight touchdowns. The ground attack is led by Matt Alsip, who has rushed for 523 yards and eight touchdowns. From his inside linebacker position, Alsip also leads the Tigers’ defense with 30 tackles.

For the Wilmington defense, Hawkins, Weaver and Jake Capwell are the top tacklers. Weaver and Brett McWilliams have two sacks each to lead the team.

Jackson drives in 5 as Cubs top Reds The ASSOCIATED PRESS CINCINNATI – Austin Jackson drove in a career-high five runs and Jon Lester set a Cubs season record for strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher, leading the playoff-bound Cubs to a 10-3 victory Wednesday over the last-place Cincinnati Reds, their fourth straight win.

The Cubs will play the Pirates in next week’s NL wild-card game, as St. Louis clinched the NL Central on Wednesday.

Lester’s strikeout of Ivan De Jesus Jr. in the fifth inning was his 203rd of the season, snapping the franchise record for a left-hander set

by Ken Holtzman in 1970. Lester (11-12) finished with nine strikeouts and retired the last 20 batters he faced.

The Reds lost their 11th straight, equaling their longest losing streak since dropping 12 consecutive in 1993.

Starlin Castro homered and had four hits for the Cubs.

The Cubs reached double figures in runs for the first time since a 14-5 win over Arizona on Sept. 4.

Anthony Rizzo doubled to lead off the fourth, snapping a 0-for-11 slump, and scored on Addison Russell’s single. In the fifth, Jackson followed Lester’s leadoff single with a one-out RBI double.

Derrick Rose out two weeks after eye socket surgery

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – The Bulls find themselves in a familiar spot, waiting for Derrick Rose to return from surgery.

This time it is his left eye socket on the mend and not one of his troublesome knees.

And his time away should be much shorter.

Rose had surgery to repair a left orbital fracture Wednesday, one day after he was elbowed in the face by one of his teammates during practice.

Coach Fred Hoiberg said the operation at Rush University Medical Center in Chica-

go “went as expected” and the team said Rose should be able to resume “basketball activities” in two weeks – about two weeks before the Oct. 27 opener against Cleveland.

“It’s unfortunate that he won’t be able to be a part of most of training camp and preseason,” Pau Gasol said.

“It’s useful time for any team, to get teams on track, set the foundation for the new season – especially with a new philosophy, new coach.”

Hoiberg said Rose will be able to attend practices and run, and he should be able to pick up the offense under his new coach simply by observ-

ing.

“We don’t know how much he’ll be able to do even while he’s in recovery mode, but he still will be here, learning,” Hoiberg said. “So we’ll go as expected as far as putting our stuff in. We added a few new actions today and guys seemed to be picking things up well.”

Hoiberg said the 2011 NBA MVP was injured after making a “great baseline drive” and passing to the corner during Tuesday’s practice.

Dr. Christine Nelson, an eye specialist and professor with the University of Michigan Health System who is

not handling Rose’s case, said she often recommends up to six weeks off, especially for patients whose activities put them at risk for another eye injury. But she said athletes eager to return to play could probably do so safely in less time by wearing a face mask or goggles.

The last thing the Bulls needed was their star point guard going down on the first day of practice.

The Bulls return virtually intact after winning 50 games and losing to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Community approach to making better students Independent Catholic high school opens in Frankfort

Where’s the affordable classical education for middle-class families? That’s what the Rev. David J. Simonetti, pastor at St. James Catholic Church in Sauk Village, wondered.

For seven years, Simonetti observed families at his church struggle to provide quality secondary education for their children. Tuition costs often were beyond their means, and local schools weren’t always safe.

“They were trying to sell their houses to get into better school districts for the sake of their children,” Simonetti said.

On April 6, 2014, Simonetti finally said, “I am going to do something about this need I see.”

His vision for an affordable, college preparatory Catholic high school materialized Sept.

4 with the opening of Pope Benedict XVI Academy on the grounds of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Frankfort, where the academy rents space.

The Diocese of Joliet has granted Pope Benedict XVI Academy a level-two affiliation because it is privately funded and independently governed, Simonetti said.

Edward Flavin, director of communications for the Diocese of Joliet, said the academy is not the only privately run school affiliated with the diocese.

Pope Benedict XVI Academy has successfully met the criteria for such an affiliation – Catholic identity, ecclesial communion, self-governance and academic accountability.

“Our No. 1 goal is to educate children, and we feel like this is a very good fit for our diocese,” Flavin said. “It’s a win-win, overall, for the community.”

In Congress and at a parish school, at the United Nations and a city jail, Pope Francis spent a whirlwind U.S. visit bridging the realms of the disadvantaged and elite, trying to turn the attention of the mightiest nation on Earth away from ideological battles and toward a world he said desperately needs help.

From his first appearance, he wove together issues that rarely are linked in American public life.

At the White House with President Barack Obama, he upheld religious freedom while seeking urgent action to ease climate change. Addressing Congress, he sought mercy for refugees, while proclaiming a duty “to defend human life at every stage of its development,” a challenge to abortion rights.

Standing on altars before the nation’s bishops, he acknowledged the difficulties of ministering amid “unprecedented changes taking place in contemporary society,” a recognition of gay marriage.

But he urged American Catholic leaders to create a church with the warmth of a “family fire,” avoiding “harsh and divisive” language and a “narrow” vision of Catholicism that he called a “perversion of faith.”

The statements amounted to a dramatic reframing of issues within the church and a hope for less polarization overall in the United States.

“Recalibration and reorientation are good words to describe it,” said John Green, a specialist in religion at the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron in Ohio.

“The pope is very adept politically. Even people who ended up disagreeing with

him on certain points find him a very attractive and persuasive man. I thought he was quite inspiring.”

So did many others.

Tens of thousands of cheering, flag-waving people lined the streets in Washington, New York and Philadelphia to greet Francis, some waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the wildly popular pope.

On a highly scripted, six-day visit that ended Sunday, and despite unprecedented security, Francis managed to inject spontaneity – kissing babies, adding a last-minute event to honor Catholic-Jewish relations and going off text in Philadelphia for a heartfelt meditation on family life.

“The atmosphere was electric,” said Auxiliary Bishop John O’Hara of New York, after Francis celebrated Mass for 18,000 people at Madison Square Garden.

Amid all the official ceremonies and the crowds, he made the deeply personal gestures of compassion that have become emblematic of his papacy. He bowed in prayer over a disabled child as the sobbing father looked on in New York. He gave a bear hug to an inmate during a visit to a Philadelphia jail.

The Argentine pope on his first visit to the United States introduced himself as a fellow American and quoted from the country’s founding documents. He answered critics who said he was overly focused on the poor to the exclusion of the middle class, and wrong on economics, given his critique of the excesses of capitalism. In Congress, he praised the “thousands of men and women who strive each day to do an honest day’s work” and noted “how much has been done in these first years of the third millennium to raise people out of extreme poverty.”

It is easy to be complacent at the bridge table, assuming everything will be sunny. This deal would trip up the less cautious. How should South play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond and East puts up the 10?

North’s two-club rebid indicated at least a six-card suit with some 12-14 points. South, with game-going values, jumped to the logical final contract.

(Note that five clubs can be defeated if East leads a diamond.)

Declarer begins with eight top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond (trick one) and three clubs.

And surely those lovely clubs would produce six winners and two overtricks.

The original South won with his diamond jack, cashed the club queen, and led his other club. West’s discard brought the play to a grinding halt. The long pause didn’t help; declarer was doomed.

South should realize that if East gets on lead and pushes a diamond through, the contract is in jeopardy.

To stop that from happening, declarer should execute what is called an avoidance play.

He crosses to the dummy (say, with a heart) and plays a club to his 10.

Here, it wins and South takes 11 tricks after all. But even if West can produce the club jack, the contract is safe.

London averages 23.4 inches per annum. That compares with, say, 36.2 inches for Seattle, 46.2 inches for New York City, and 61.9 inches for Miami.

or inflammatory bowel disease can stiffen or scar the rectum. The rectum loses elasticity and cannot store a normal amount of stool.

• Constipation. When hard stool becomes stuck in the rectum, liquid stool may leak out around it.

• Sphincter damage.

If the internal anal sphincter is damaged, bits of stool can leak out without your knowledge or control. If the external anal sphincter muscles are damaged, you might be unable to squeeze them hard enough or long enough to make it to the toilet.

• Pelvic floor muscle weakness. Fecal incontinence can result if these muscles become weak, or if they contract and relax at inappropriate times.

• Rectal prolapse. When the muscles supporting the rectum are weak, the rectal lining may descend into the anal canal or protrude from the body.

If that happens, your external sphincter must work harder to keep you continent.

• Nerve damage. Incontinence may develop if nerves controlling the sphincters malfunction.

Nerve damage can result from childbirth, multiple sclerosis, stroke, diabetic neuropathy or other conditions.

There are new options for treating and managing fecal incontinence.

Most people with this distressing condition can get some relief from these treatments. We will discuss them in a future column.

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my late 50s, and I have fecal incontinence. What causes it?

Dear Reader: We begin having bowel movements soon after birth, and controlling the process soon thereafter. So it is a surprising and disturbing event when we cannot hold our stool long enough to reach the bathroom or experience unexpected leakage of stool when we haven’t felt any urge.

You should know there are many people with this problem. Nearly 1 in 10 adults in the United States have episodes of fecal incontinence. All ages are affected – your case is not unusual – but fecal incontinence becomes more common as we get older.

When everything is working properly, muscles in the colon propel feces into the rectum, which sits at the end of your digestive tract. The rectum has walls that stretch to hold the stool.

The last 1 to 1.5 inches of the rectum is called the anal canal. Two kinds of muscle surround it.

The internal anal sphincter, which is not under your conscious control, stays contracted most of the time to prevent leakage. The external anal sphincter, which you do control, surrounds the internal anal sphincter. (I’ve put an illustration on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

Nerves tell your brain when your rectum is full.

At this point you can decide to have a bowel movement or wait for a better time or place. If you choose to delay, you tighten the external anal sphincter to hold feces inside. You also contract a pelvic floor muscle that loops around the rectum.
