Police identify officer in video playing poker Alleged activity occurred while driving squad car

and RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook police say they have identified the police officer allegedly captured on video playing online poker while driving a squad car.

The video was posted Tuesday on YouTube. It shows a Bolingbrook Police Department squad car in motion while the driver is using a laptop computer.

driver was playing video poker.

The video was posted by a user under the name “Filming Cops” and garnered more than 1,830 views as of Wednesday evening. The user’s profile contains a link to filmingcops.com, which invites people to send videos of police misconduct. The website contains the tagline “Declare war on police brutality.”

A woman in the video can be heard saying, “He’s going to be so happy when this is on Facebook.”

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa confirmed via email police have identified the officer in the video, but said, “Due to the seriousness of this incident, the Bolingbrook Police Department has placed this under an internal investigation. I have no further information at this time.”

Rompa did not comment on whether police officials had contacted the creator of the video.

Attempts Wednesday to contact the creator were unsuccessful.

JOLIET– A child playing with matches inside a Joliet home caused a fire that left it with about $50,000 in damages, according to Joliet fire officials.

On Wednesday morning, a resident of 1216 Chippewa Street notified firefighters about a fire occurring at their home, Joliet Fire Captain Mark Vershay said. In about six minutes, firefighters were on the scene, where they discovered a fire that started in a child’s bedroom had spread to the attic and basement areas.

Vershay said it was difficult to extinguish the fire quickly because the floor of the bedroom had collapsed into the basement, where another fire was happening.

The home had been occupied by five adults and one child, who all left the home unharmed.

Joliet man gets 45 years for ’09 murder

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man was sentenced Wednesday to 45 years in prison for the 2009 killing of a man inside the Lois Place apartment complex.

Jesus Zambrano, 23, was found guilty in August of first-degree murder for the May 2009 killing of Robert Gooch.

A second Joliet man, Pedro Sanchez, already was tried and convicted for his role in the murder and is serving a 61-year sentence.

Zambrano and Sanchez arrived at Gooch’s girlfriend’s apartment

on May 22, 2009, and confronted Gooch, according to the Will C o u n t y State’s Attorney’s Office. She testified that while she was in her bedroom she heard Sanchez’s voice in the

living room and someone saying “my girl.” She then heard a single gunshot and went to the living room to find Gooch bleeding on the floor.

An autopsy revealed Gooch died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Gooch’s two children were asleep on a sofa bed in the living room at the time of the murder, according the state’s attorney’s office.

“These two thugs committed an act of despicable brutality by gunning down an unarmed man while his two children were asleep in the same room,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a

statement. “Jesus Zambrano has been taken off our streets thanks to a first-rate investigation by the Joliet Police Department and top-notch trial work by prosecutors DanWalsh and Tricia McKenna.”

The apartment complex security footage showed Zambrano and Sanchez arriving to the parking lot, getting out of the vehicle, running from the building after Gooch was shot and driving away from the scene.

A witness testified he saw Zambrano retrieve an object from under the hood of the car before entering the complex.

DESPERATE NEED Food pantries seeking donations

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Second Baptist Food Pantry Director Greg Brown’s goal is to feed everyone who comes through the doors and to make them feel like family while they’re inside.

Whether it’s setting aside a cake for a child’s birthday or lending an ear to a man who just lost his job, Brown wants the community to feel comfortable while they’re at the pantry.

“A man who just got fired, he might not want to come to the pantry because he’ll feel like less of a man,” said Brown, whose pantry, located at 156 S. Joliet St., serves residents every Thursday afternoon. “We’ll talk to him. Make him feel like family.”

Food pantries, such as Second Baptist, typically don’t have a problem stocking the shelves during the holiday season. Schools, churches and other volunteer groups show up in droves to donate food and volunteer their time to help hungry neighbors.

But it’s after the holiday season that many food pantries see a drop off in donations, while the number of hungry residents remains the same.

“Hunger is a year-round issue,” said Donna Lake, communications director for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. “While there’s a lot of giving during the holiday season, and we are grateful for that, in all honesty the people who are hungry [before Christmas] are the people who are going to be hungry Jan 1.”

The Northern Illinois Food Bank distributes food to 13 counties in the state. In 2013 the food bank delivered 42 million meals to residents, up 27 percent from the previous year. But while the food bank is delivering more food than ever before, there always is a noticeable reduction in donations and volunteers after the holidays,

“We definitely still need the help after the first of the year,” she said. “People are thinking about it over the holidays, but our volunteer hall will be pretty empty after the holidays.”

St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, 710 W. Marion St. in Joliet, had a successful donation season through

the fall and early winter, but Chairwoman Alicia Tocwish said she anticipates a lack of food at the beginning of the year.

“Everybody has been very kind during the holidays,” Tocwish said. “October, November and December have been phenomenal.

But once January hits, the giving goes down.”

Tocwish said the pantry’s lowest donation season is typically during the summer when people are on vacation and schools are not in session. But that tends to be one of the pantry’s busiest times of the year as children aren’t getting the free breakfast and lunch from

school, and more families rely on the food pantry for meals.

“It drops off immensely in the summer, and that’s when we need it the most,” she said.

Marianne Manley, coordinator of St. John the Baptist Food Pantry, 260 Division St. in Joliet, also said there’s a lack of food in the summer, but added that the decline begins at the start of the new year.

“The donations do decrease,” Manley said. “We have groups who do regular holiday food drives.

Three parishes contribute. They put a greater effort into the holidays. ... We don’t see that obviously

in January.”

Local food pantries mentioned that the items in most need are paper goods like toilet paper and diapers, which aren’t covered under food stamps.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank said items such as canned meat, beans and pasta are good because they have high nutritional value and can last on the shelves.

But cash donations often are the most effective gifts, Lake said.

“We are able to turn every dollar into $8 worth of groceries,” she said. “We prefer the cash donations because we can stretch that further.”

Flu season in full swing; vaccines available

VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hospitals and vaccination clinics are getting ready for the flu to hit in January and are already seeing spikes in the number of cases – many with the H1N1 strain that broke out in 2009.

Will County reported one person diagnosed with the flu in intensive care in October, one in November and nine in December. However the first week in January has seen 19 people with any strain of the flu.

The county only keeps record of flu victims who went to the ICU, but hospitals also see many more patients who are treated and leave.

“There has been quite a bit of flu just recently,” said Jan Ciccarelli, the director of marketing and community relations at Presence Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. “Most tested for the A strain, but we can’t determine at this time if it is H1N1.”

Presence Saint Joseph’s has seen 362 patients test positive for the flu since Dec. 2, Ciccarelli said. On any given day, only a handful test positive. Jan. 2 was the worst day with nine people admitted.

Patients also have tested positive at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, but Director of Community Relations Tracy Simons said it wasn’t unusual compared with other years.

“We don’t really know at this point because January is really when people start coming in,” Simons said.

“It’s typical for people to gather together in the holidays and some come back with the flu.”

Flu season usually peaks around February, according to information from flu.gov, but Illinois already is seeing “widespread” activity, meaning at least half of the regions in the state have seen cases in the past three weeks.

In the last week of December alone, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 42 cases of influenza with at least six of those cases causing death. Nearly all of the cases were caused by the H1N1 strand.

In Grundy County, Morris Hospital has only seen 142 cases since October, which is down from last year at this time when 330 cases were reported.

“It’s difficult for us to draw conclusions from that figure because we still have several weeks of the flu season ahead of us,” said Janet Long, public relations manager for Morris Hospital. “It’s hard to know what the flu will do because each year it doesn’t peak at the same time.”

The Will County Community Health Center has vaccinations available and accepts walk-in patients every day of the week in its immunization center at 1106 Neal Ave. “The last couple of years we’ve seen traffic go down at the center because people are getting them from other locations like Walgreens,” Reato said.

This year the center is administering a new vaccine that protects against four strains of the flu. Iris Pokosa, an immunization nurse at the center, has seen all the different strains in patients.

“We don’t stop administering them until the vaccinations run out.”

She was a very proud grandmother and was not only a loving mother but a best friend to her children and will be missed greatly.

Pearlina was born on April 2, 1928 in Montego Bay, Jamaica to Daniel and Urcella Gordon. Pearlina passed away peacefully at her home on January 6, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.

She is preceded in death by her husband Herschel “Bud” McFarland.

They met by becoming pen pals while Herschel was in the service and their love grew. Herschel flew to Montego Bay, Jamaica to marry her on January 16, 1957. With courage she immigrated to the United States knowing only her husband. Also preceding her in death are her parents, three brothers, Vivian, Cleveland, and Vincent, and one sister, Gwendolyn.

She also volunteered at her church, Sacred Heart, including their soup kitchen.

DARA MCKEOWN Dara McKeown (nee Prew), departed this life on January 3, 2014 at the Village of Penn State in State College, PA. Longtime Joliet resident.

Survived by her son, James (Nancy) McKeown of State College, Pennsylvania; and daughter, Patricia McKeown of Joliet; two grandchildren, Jeffrey McKeown of Los Angeles, California and Pamela McKeown of Owings Mill, Maryland; a great-grandson, Zachary McKeown of Tempe, Arizona; also survived by four nephews.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles McKeown (1985); her father, Marshall Prew; and mother, Ruth Prew Forsyth; and her step-father, William Forsyth; her sister, Dote Rice Vranich; and Dote's husbands, James Rice and Ray Vranich; her brother and sister-inlaw, Paul McKeown and Doris McKeown Durell.

Dara was born in Joliet to Marshall and Ruth (nee Miller) Prew. She graduated from Joliet Township High School and Joliet Junior College. Before marriage, she worked at The Spectator newspaper and the Joliet Arsenal.

On November 30, 1943, Dara married Lt. Charles J. McKeown, a Joliet attorney. Orders sent them to Texas, and then Cleveland, until the end of W.W. II. The couple returned to Joliet in 1946, where Dara enjoyed motherhood, and activities with many different groups, while Charles resumed his law practice.

She participated in service organizations such as the Women's Club of Joliet, Childerguild of Silver Cross Hospital, PEO and First Presbyterian Church groups. She also enjoyed reading, bowling, playing golf (including a hole-inone!), social bridge as well as traveling and all types of musical activities. In 2007 Dara moved to a retirement community in State College, Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 805 Western Ave., Friday, January 10, 2014, at 12:00 P.M. Rev. Dale Ambler officiating. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Gloria is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Joseph) Rice; three grandchildren Stacey (Nathan) Schmidt, Tiffany (Mark) Miller, Allison Kay Sefcik; four greatgrandchildren Ryan and Kelsey Schmidt, Jackson and Agatha Miller; and one sister, Lorraine Boseo; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Sefcik; sister-in-law, Josephine (John) Olivero; two brothers-in-law, Seddy (Frances) Sefcik and Donald (Kathleen) Sefcik. Trial begins in ’11 murder case

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The trial of a Chicago man accused of murdering a New Lenox Township man, robbing his home, and driving the deceased man’s car back to Chicago began Wednesday.

Rodney Julun, 25, is accused of murdering 59-year-old Dwight Jones and robbing him of his Volkswagen Jetta, television, laptop, jewelry, cell phone and other items.

On June 10, 2011, prosecutors said Julun entered Jones’ home on the 13300 block of West 184th Street and hit him in the head with a lamp.

Then Julun and two

other men allegedly robbed the home multiple times.

Four days after the incident, Jones’ niece told police that she stopped by the home to find her uncle’s door open and she could smell gasoline.

When police arrived, they found Jones lying in a bed, wrapped in a comforter, and covered in gasoline, according to court records. A gas can and a bloodied lamp were found next to the body, police said.

The body had not been set on fire, but police observed what appeared to be blunt trauma to the head and a body that had begun to decompose, according to court records.

Brown picked Julun out of a police photo lineup as the person who sold him the phone.

Crowder gets life in prison Joliet man convicted in ’12 double murder

Sjolante Q. Crowder, 19, was convicted in September of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder for the slaying of Adrien Knox and Delasse Lanier. A third man, Jordan Caples, also was shot but survived.

Crowder was sentenced Tuesday to two life sentences plus 15 years in prison. He is not eligible

for parole.

Prosecutors said that on Oct. 23, 2012, Crowder approached a g r o u p Sjolante o f p e o p l e Crowder on the 700 block of Second Avenue in Joliet with a handgun.

The group was standing near an SUV when Crowder shot three men and then fled toward Rowell Avenue, court records show.

Knox collapsed in a nearby driveway, and Lanier was found wounded

inside a home, according to Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie.

Multiple witnesses, including Caples, identified Crowder as the shooter.

One witness told police that the shooting was gang related and that Crowder was targeting rival gang members, according to court records. But no evidence of gang activity was presented at the trial, Pelkie said.

Crowder, of the 1500 block of Englewood Ave., is a self-admitted gang member, according to court records.

Julun, who was convicted in 2009 of burning and burglarizing a Bolingbrook home, is charged with one count of murder, three counts of residential burglary, one count of robbery, one count of home invasion, and one count of motor-vehicle theft.

If convicted, Julun could spend up to life in prison. The trial is expected to last through the week.

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After 8 inches of snow and sub-zero temperatures hit Joliet early this week, Waste Management officials said Wednesday that garbage pickup is operating on its “holiday schedule,” and residents should expect their trash to be collected one day later than normal.

Joliet customers who usually get their trash collected on Monday and Tuesday had their garbage picked up Wednesday, said Lisa Disbrow, spokeswoman for Waste Management. Wednesday collections would take place on Thursday,

Thursday collections would happen Friday, and so on.

“We are committed to providing quality service to our customers,” Disbrow said. “We do apologize for any inconvenience caused by the inclement weather.”

Disbrow said snow and ice-covered roads made it challenging for Waste Management workers to collect trash, particularly on Monday and Tuesday.

Some roads were impassible and others were down to only one lane, making collections in some areas impossible, she said.

Joliet trash collection will resume its normal schedule next week, Disbrow said.

Mayor criticized for leaking investigation

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Several Joliet City Council members say Mayor Tom Giarrante should not have gone public about an investigation into Evergreen Terrace apartment owners obtaining “highly sensitive” city documents.

Council member Bob O’Dekirk of District 2 said he was stunned by Giarrante’s statement at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, when he disclosed information about the investigation. He said council members agreed to an investigation during closed session Monday, and Giarrante might have violated their closed session rules with his announcement.

“It seemed, to me, he was grandstanding and he was playing politics,” O’Dekirk said.

On Tuesday, Giarrante said he asked the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office to investigate an apparent leak of a document prepared by City Attorney Jeff Plyman for a closed session meeting in August. He said a copy of the document was given to Evergreen Terrace owners, who are involved in a condemnation case with city officials for ownership of the apartment complex.

In 2005, city officials sought to acquire ownership of the property by eminent domain after finding it was mismanaged and prone to criminal activity.

Larry Hug, Joliet City Council member rized the proposed settlement between city officials and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Department officials had opposed city officials’ efforts to condemn the property. Along with several tenants, they have since agreed to a settlement with city officials to drop their legal objections.

The condemnation case between city officials and Evergreen Terrace owners is continuing. Plyman said several weeks ago that city officials requested the owners return the document but they refused the request.

Council members Larry Hug of District 1 and Jan Quillman said Giarrante should have allowed the state’s attorney’s office to look into the matter before making the issue public.

“I think the announcement of this was premature, and I think it violated the very executive session rules, if you will, that it’s trying to address,” Hug said.

Giarrante said he spoke with Plyman and a state’s attorney’s representative to determine if he could talk publicly about the investigation. He said he was told it would not vio-

late the rules of closed session. “[City council members] always talk transparency and letting the public know, and that’s what I did,” he said.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, said Giarrante contacted the office Tuesday about the apparent leak. He said while the office is looking into the matter, no determination has been made yet if an illegal activity occurred.

Plyman said he knew of other cases where courts had ruled that disclosure of closed session information was not a violation of criminal law, but he was not sure if this situation was the same. He didn’t think the investigation would impact the ongoing condemnation case.

“I don’t expect any effect on the underlying litigation,” he said.

O’Dekirk said he didn’t know if handing out a document discussed and distributed during closed session would be considered illegal. At the very least, it could be considered official misconduct, he said.

As of now, he said there is a lot of speculation but nobody knows the facts.

Students glad to return to school Break extended because of cold

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Eisenhower Academy fourth-grader Harrison Scroggins was happy to be eating lunch with his classmates Wednesday after being back from a winter break that was extended an extra two days because of the recent arctic cold.

“I was kind of anxious to get back to school,” Harrison said.

Harrison used part of the time off Monday and Tuesday to play outside in the snow with his cousin.

But they didn’t stay outside for too long.

“We only were out for a little bit because it was so cold out,” Harrison said.

He and his fellow students were supposed to return to Eisenhower Academy on Monday, but their break was extended after Joliet District 86 along with other area school districts canceled classes because of the arctic cold.

They had been on Christmas break since Dec. 20.

Lula, who takes the bus to school, said she is glad classes were called off Monday and Tuesday.

“It would have been too cold to wait for the bus,” she said.

Even with two extra days off, Eisenhower Academy fourth-grade teacher Jill Kelley came in Tuesday to do some work at the school.

“I have older daughters,” Kelley said. “I was ready to go back. I wanted to do some planning.”

But Kelley, who lives in New Lenox, decided not to brave Monday’s arctic temperatures and stayed at home. She also felt the district made the right decision in canceling classes Monday and Tuesday.

“You don’t know if buses are going to break down,” she said. “I wouldn’t want my own children waiting at a bus stop. I wouldn’t want to put the kids in danger.”

The area is slowly emerging from its deep freeze.

The high Thursday is expected to be near 26 degrees and Saturday, temperatures could hover around 37 degrees, with the possibility of a rain and snow mix.

Morris, Will-Grundy task force agree on liability, cost issues cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Some clarification changes had to be made to the agreement between the city of Morris and the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force.

“It clarifies some liability issues and costs associated with each agency,” Chief Brent Dite said Wednesday.

The Morris City Council approved the intergovernmental agreement during its regular council meeting Monday.

The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is made up of more than 30 agencies in the two counties. “[The task force] properly investigates any major crime that occurs where an agency doesn’t have the man power, skills or resources to properly investigate a crime,” Dite said.

He told the council Monday four of Morris’s officers are members of the task force: Chief Dep-

uty John Severson, Sgt. Chad Skelton, Sgt. Scott Henderson and Detective Eric Werden. Severson is a Division Commander for the task force.

All members of the task force bring different skills, such as evidence collection backgrounds, expertise in interrogation and technological data.

Officers that are members of the force are called out when the task force is needed for specific crimes, Dite said.

Although Morris has not had to utilize the task force for crime-solving purposes yet, it has taken advantage of the training that is offered through the task force, Dite said.

The task force was established about five years ago.

It’s mission is to “promote area-wide public safety and enhance the ability of all law enforcement agencies in Will and Grundy counties to solve major crimes through resource sharing, partnership building and joint, cooperative, consistent

training and application of investigative and enforcement methodology,” according to the bylaws.

The crimes considered to be major enough for the task force are homicide or attempted homicide; kidnapping; serial arson, rape or sexual assault; police-involved shooting or deadly force incidents; in-custody death investigations and other exceptionally heinous offenses.

In addition, cold cases can be investigated by the task force if the cases are approved by the task force’s executive board.

Other Grundy County agencies that are a part of the task force include the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office, Coal City police and Minooka police.

When the task force was first created each agency paid a $1,000 startup fee, Dite said. Since its creation, the agencies only pay fees when the board of directors decides the task force is in need of equipment or other needs.

“Kids can relax and read without being judged or stopped at every other word,” said Suzanne Steiner of Therapy Dogs International’s Facility Department. “It helps build their confidence and lets them associate reading with something fun.”

Steiner said Tail Waggin’ Tutors is established in several libraries across the country and receives overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents and handlers.

“When they alerted us to this program, we thought it sounded fantastic – just a really neat thing to do,” said Rene Norris, director of the Children’s Department of the Coal City Public Library, which is one of the only facilities in the area offering the program.

Therapy dogs are trained to behave, sit quietly and provide affection for the children. Currently, the library in Coal City rotates four therapy dogs from Diamond, Coal City and Morris throughout the week and works with

about 20 local kids.

“The kids enjoy Ray so much and he loves getting to see the kids,” said Burk, who fostered and then adopted Ray when he was 2 years old. “He’s really good with kids. He used to be in a family with two little kids. He just migrates to them.”

Norris said children of all ages are welcome to participate in the program, but they try to encourage children who can read or recognize at least a few words.

“We’ve actually had a couple of kids that just looked at the pictures and told a story to go along with them,” Norris said.

“The oldest we’ve had was fifth or sixth grade, but I would open it up to anybody. I think it could be really great for special-needs kids.”

Parents must register their child beforehand to reserve their 30-minute session with one of the library’s therapy dogs.

Usually, the handler and a librarian stay in the room with the child but try not to interfere with their reading.

COAL CITY – Ray can’t talk, read, organize books or work the computer, and he often falls asleep on the job, but the 5-yearold Labrador is one of the Coal City Public Library’s most beloved volunteers.

“He’s so calm and he’s such a good leader. It’s just like that show, everybody loves Ray, you know?” said Kate Burk, Ray’s owner and handler.

He is a certified therapy dog, and every Wednesday night, Ray visits the library for the Tail Waggin’ Tutors program where children can practice their comprehension skills by reading to him.

“I think it’s definitely made him a better reader,” said Kristin Kurdenok, mother of 8-year-old Owen, who has participated in the program since kindergarten. “I was so scared he would want to stop once he got older, but he loves it. He looks forward to it every week.”

Tail Waggin’ Tutors is a nationwide program organized by Therapy Dogs International, but began in Coal City in fall 2011 after a library patron trained their dog to work in the program.

The program aims to provide a relaxed atmosphere for children to practice their reading and comprehension skills, specifically, children who have difficulty reading aloud and have developed self-esteem issues as a result.

Five pension funds owed $100.5B

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers thought they were saving money five years ago by changing the way the cash-strapped state counts its pension debts, but a report released Wednesday suggests the effort may have landed taxpayers with billions of dollars in extra costs.

Auditor General William Holland reported the system-wide pension debt hit $100.5 billion last summer. But the total would have been $3 billion less had the Legislature not required “smoothing,” an actuarial process that considers gains and losses over a five-year span, not current market values.

If another state law switched back to counting current market value instead of “smoothed” value, it could save taxpayers money in the amount the state must put up as its annual pension contribution in the budget year that begins in July, although the savings were not reported.

Pension leaders advise against that.

“Market value is a snapshot, but is it the correct snapshot, or should we be looking more over time?” asked Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a Northbrook Democrat who was instrumental in landmark legislation signed into law last month to deal with the huge pension debt. “Smoothing looks more over time.”

said in an interview, gives a more realistic look at the numbers.

But five years ago when the economy was in the tank, it made them rosier. Now that the market has improved, assets “smoothed” over the past five years makes the outcome gloomier than current market value of the pension systems’ assets.

That calculation puts the debt at $97.5 billion, according to Holland’s audit.

The pension law followed years of debate about how to reverse decades of lawmakers and governors shorting or skipping pension contributions.

The law, which cuts benefits and raises the retirement age for younger

workers but also reduces employees’ contributions and includes a state funding guarantee, would cut the systems’ debt by $21 billion and save $160 billion over 30 years. But it doesn’t take effect until June 1, and several lawsuits have been filed challenging its constitutionality.

Wednesday’s report does not take the reform law into consideration because its numbers are older.

Using the market value of assets, the pension systems have 41 percent of the money they need to cover obligations to current and future state retirees. Smoothing puts the so-called funded ratio at 39 percent.

Chicago Archdiocese to release priest abuse files The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – As part of a court settlement, the Archdiocese of Chicago plans to release church files on former Catholic priests accused of sexually abusing children.

Cardinal Francis George made the announcement in a letter to priests that will be published Sunday in church bulletins. In it, he acknowledges mistakes in the church’s response to the allegations, but says there was no cover-up.

Plaintiffs in abuse cases have sought the information for years.

Under the terms of an ongoing settlement, the

church will deliver the documents to their attorneys on Jan. 15.

The information will go public a week later after information about the alleged victims is removed.

Jeff Anderson, an attorney for plaintiffs, has seen the records and says they include church documents on 30 former clergy members accused in the cases.

Anderson said the files also identify current and former church officials who he says sought to protect them.

In his letter, George writes that the church is releasing the records in the interests of “transparency.”

Quinn’s running mate continues working in Conn.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Pat Quinn’s running mate will continue working in Connecticut until March 1, just weeks before he appears on the ballot in Illinois’ Democratic primary.

Paul Vallas will keep working as superintendent of Bridgeport public schools until then, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Illinois’ primary election will be held March 18.

Vallas submitted his resignation to Bridgeport officials on Dec. 31 and is required to give a 60-day notice.

Quinn picked the former Chicago schools CEO to be his running mate in November after Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon announced

she was running for comptroller.

Quinn is considered a front-runner on the Democratic ticket, and the two are expected to face the winner of a Republican primary among four candidates: Paul Vallas state Sens.

Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard, state Treasurer Dan Rutherford and venture capitalist Bruce Rauner.

Vallas, who sought the Democratic nomination for Illinois governor in 2002 and ran schools in Philadelphia and New Orleans, had been fighting to keep his job in Connecticut.

“He does not want to leave the Bridgeport school system in the lurch,” said Steven Ecker, an attorney for Vallas in Connecticut.

“If he had done nothing and they wanted to fire him, he would have gotten a big payday.”

Vallas will continue earning his $4,500 weekly salary until he departs. If he’d been fired from the post, the district would have been obligated to pay him a lump-sum payment of $234,000 along with a year of health insurance.

Leslie Wertheimer, a spokeswoman for the Quinn-Vallas campaign, said Vallas continues to meet with Quinn.

“Paul’s transition will be complete by March,” she said.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has completed a skydive jump on what is the third anniversary of the Tucson, Ariz., shooting that left her critically wounded.

Giffords landed without any injury Wednesday afternoon at a skydiving site between Phoenix and Tucson. After completing her landing, Giffords blew kisses and waved to a crowd of reporters. She described the jump as a wonderful experience.

Obama administration seeking fairness and equality in schools

By KIMBERLY HEFLING The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is urging schools to abandon overly zealous discipline policies that civil rights advocates have long said lead to a school-to-prison pipeline that discriminates against minority students.

The wide-ranging series of guidelines issued Wednesday in essence tells schools they must adhere to the principle of fairness and equity in student disci-

pline or face strong action if they don’t. The American Civil Liberties Union called the recommendations “ground-breaking.”

“A routine school disciplinary infraction should land a student in the principal’s office, not in a police precinct,” Attorney General Eric Holder said.

Holder said the problem often stems from well intentioned “zero-tolerance” policies that too often inject the criminal justice system into the resolution of problems.

“In our investigations, we have found cases where African-American students were disciplined more harshly and more frequently because of their race than similarly situated white students,” the Justice and Education departments said in a letter to school districts. “In short, racial discrimination in school discipline is a real problem.”

Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of the School Superintendents Association, acknowledged that students of color were being suspended and expelled in disproportionate numbers.

In American schools,

black students without disabilities were more than three times as likely as whites to be expelled or suspended, according to government civil rights data collection from 20112012.

Although black students made up 15 percent of students in the data collection, they made up more than a third of students suspended once, 44 percent of those suspended more than once and more than a third of students expelled.

More than half of students involved in school-related arrests or referred to law enforcement were Hispanic or black, according to the data.

The al-Qaida-linked group that calls itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has made no secret of its desire to turn Syria’s civil war into a regional conflagration that would allow it to take firmer root. Its very name, rebranded last year from the more-local Islamic State of Iraq, spells out its cross-border ambitions.

Deep freeze has silver linings Ice cover may raise low water

By JOHN FLESHER The Associated Press TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – From a field station in northern Wisconsin, where the previous night’s low was a numbing 29 degrees below zero, climate scientist John Lenters studied computer images of ice floes on Lake Superior with delight.

It may be hard to think of this week’s deep freeze as anything but miserable, but to scientists like Lenters there are silver linings: Heavy ice cover may help raise low water in the Great Lakes and protect shorelines and

wetlands from erosion.

The extreme cold could also kill some insect pests and slow the migration of invasive species.

“All around, it’s a positive thing,” said Lenters, a specialist in the climate of lakes and watersheds.

Ice cover on the Great Lakes has been shrinking for decades, but this year more than 60 percent of the surface is expected to be frozen over at some point – an occurrence that could help the lakes rebound from a prolonged slump in water levels.

Even agriculture can benefit. Although cold weather is generally no friend to crops, some of southern Florida’s citrus fruits can use a perfectly timed cool-down – which they were getting as midweek temperatures hov-

ered around freezing.

“A good cold snap lowers the acidity in oranges and increases sugar content, sweetens the fruit,” said Frankie Hall, policy director for the Florida Farm Bureau Federation.

“It’s almost been a blessing.”

Scientists noted that subzero temperatures and pounding snowfalls like those that gripped much of the nation are not unheard-of in the Midwest and Northeast and used to happen more frequently.

The extremes help keep nature in balance.

“I’m just happy to see that we have a normal winter for once,” said Lenters, who works for Limnotech, an environmental consulting firm in Ann Arbor.

As the climate has

warmed, the absence of bitter cold has actually been damaging.

The emerald ash borer, an insect native to Asia, arrived in the U.S. around 2002 and has killed about 50 million ash trees in the Upper Midwest. But some locales this winter may have gotten cold enough to kill at least some of their larvae, said Robert Venette, a U.S. Forest Service research biologist in St. Paul, Minn.

A reading of minus 20 will usually produce a 50 percent mortality rate, and “the numbers go up quickly as it gets colder than that,” Venette said.

While the freeze won’t wipe out the ash borer, it will give communities a chance to develop plans for limiting the bug’s spread, he said.

Obama could announce the changes as early as next week. He’s weighing more than 40 recommendations from a presidential review board that proposed restrictions on the National Security Agency’s collection of telephone records from millions of Americans.

A separate task force appointed by Congress has also undertaken its own review of the NSA’s vast powers. However, the Privacy and Civil Liberties

Iraq: Fighters urged to go as supplies run short BAGHDAD – Tribal leaders in the besieged city of Fallujah warned al-Qaida-linked fighters to leave to avoid a military showdown, echoing a call by Iraq’s prime minister Wednesday that they give up their fight as the government pushes to regain control of mainly Sunni areas west of Baghdad.

The warning came as gunmen attacked an Iraqi army barracks in a Sunni area north of Baghdad, killing 12 soldiers.

Seven soldiers were wounded in the assault in Diyala province, authorities said.

WASHINGTON – A private survey shows U.S. businesses added the most jobs in a year in December, powered by a big gain in construction.

The figures are the latest evidence that the economy gained momentum at the end of 2013.

Payroll processor ADP said Wednesday companies added 238,000 jobs in December, up slightly from 229,000 the previous month.

The report showed solid gains in higher-paying jobs.

Construction firms hired 48,000 additional workers in December, the most since 2006. And manufacturers added 19,000 positions.

Companies in retail, transportation and utilities also gained 47,000 jobs.

“This is the second time I’ve come to the show,” Pfau said. “He always looks around, but his goal today was to take the licensing test.”

Don Halverson of DeKalb went with a couple of friends just to see what’s new.

Each year, as many as 8,000 people flood Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center for the two-day farm show.

This year’s event focuses on technology. Along with various companies displaying equipment, some showed off new software and other precision agriculture technology.

A few of the booths were not yet manned Wednesday morning, largely due to the recent cold temperatures and snowfall, IDEAg Group marketing director Samantha Kaplan said.

“We are nearly sold out with about 220 exhibitors, but we’ve had a handful held up by the weather,” Kaplan said.

She was hopeful the size of the crowd would increase as the mercury climbed.

Goodyear sues over ‘boss-napping’ PARIS – Goodyear’s French division says it has filed a lawsuit over the “boss-napping” of two of its executives and workers’ occupation of a plant in northern France.

Goodyear Dunlop Tires France – a subsidiary of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. of Akron, Ohio – said in a statement the lawsuit was filed Wednesday with the prosecutor in Amiens, France, because it can’t accept “actions that endanger people and goods.”

Take care to avoid the flu Having the flu is a miserable experience.

The influenza virus can lead to more than a week of aching muscles, coughing, chills, dry cough, headaches, nausea and other unpleasantness.

Flu activity usually peaks in January and February, and in Illinois it has begun to spike, with influenza widespread and flu-like illness activity high, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

In the week ended Dec. 28 in Illinois, 42 people went to intensive care and two died because of complications from the flu, and 150 people tested positive for influenza – all the highest numbers of the season so far.

That means its time to take serious steps to protect yourself and others from the spreading flu.

Health officials said the best defense for everyone more than six months old is to get a flu shot. If you haven’t been vaccinated, it’s not too late.

Flu vaccine is available at most drugstores, your doctor’s office, or an immediate care clinic. A listing of locations and prices near you is available online at www.flushot. healthmap.org.

To prevent the spread of germs to others, it’s also good practice to remember the “3 C’s”: Clean your hands, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, and contain germs by staying home if you get sick, rather than going to work or venturing out.

Those younger than 2 or older than 65, or those with chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes are most susceptible to complications of the flu, which can include potentially fatal pneumonia.

Direct costs of flu in doctors’ visits, medications, etc. estimated at $4.6 billion a year in the U.S. 111 million workdays are lost at a cost of about $7 billion a year in sick days and lost productivity.

The flu is no joke. It’s worth doing whatever it takes to avoid it and stop it spreading to others.

We’ve all heard the stories about kids today and their addiction to cellphones, and how it’s not like it was when we were kids – as if something else is like it was. So I was impressed to hear from a friend about a young teenage girl who went to a party and decided that she was missing too much of her life by being on her cell all the time. So she turned off her phone, put it in her coat pocket and threw it on the bed with all the other coats.

She had a wonderful time, caught up with all her friends without ever once looking at her Facebook account, talked to everyone without using Twitter, and looked at her friends’ faces in real life, not in selfies. She ate hors d’ouevres and even danced a little.

When it was time to leave, she grabbed her coat and drove home. She didn’t even remember to fish her phone out of her pocket; she was just thinking of what a good time she’d had. It didn’t

Romeoville defeats Minooka; teams draw even in standings

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Minooka did about as well as it possibly could have for a 131-pin Southwest Prairie Conference varsity boys bowling loss when it hosted Romeoville at Channahon Lanes on Wednesday.

Although the Indians were defeated 3,145-3,014, they took the second game, 1,016-1,008, and the third, 1,071-1,068, after losing the first 1,069-927.

Games are worth two points each in the SPC standings – the series as a whole is worth four – so Minooka salvaged four conference points of a possible 10.

Minooka entered with a conference-leading 42 points on the season to Romeoville’s 40, meaning the teams are tied heading into the final round of duals today.

The conference championships are Saturday at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.

“Coming in here, I knew it was gonna be a dogfight. They’re a very good team,” Romeoville coach Tony Talley said.

“One thing has been our Achilles all season is single-pin spares, and that’s

While Kyle Zaramba of Romeoville went single-pin spare strike, Dylan Pickett of Minooka had a 10th-frame turkey to close out the win and a 664 individual series.

“I felt good,” Pickett said. “I thought the team bowled pretty well today.

We cheered each other on a lot, just kept it all together. Kept cheering

each other on, kept picking each other up.”

Cody Surges bowled a 259 in the first game to pace Romeoville, which also got a 220 from Jacob Hubbs, a 206 from Vaughn, a 193 from Comparetto and a 191 from Dakota Vostry.

Other than John Kaufmann’s 236, the Indians had no bowlers above a 183 in Game 1.

Surges went on to bowl a 680 series, which was the highest for either team Wednesday and a season high for him.

“I was just hitting my mark, making my shots, just getting lucky on some shots,” Surges said.

“It was a huge match for conference. Just gotta get them at the conference tournament.”

Vostry bowled a 640 series, which included a 226 in the second game for Romeoville, which received a 626 from Hubbs and a 618 from Zaramba.

Other than Pickett, Kaufmann was the only Minooka bowler over 600 on the day, totaling a 646.

This was Minooka’s first conference loss of the season and the series total was the second-lowest of the Indians’ conference season.

‘It’s going to be a challenge’ Lemont boys basketball prepares for tough second half of season

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – An inexperienced Lemont boys basketball team no doubt gets a passing grade for the first five weeks of the season as it heads into 2014 with an 8-6 mark.

But now the real tests are set to begin.

With the easier part of the schedule in the rearview mirror, the Indians soon will find out how far they have come since the beginning of the season in the middle of November.

“It’s going to be a chal-

lenge,” said Lemont coach Rick Runaas of the second half of the season. “The tough part of our schedule is coming. It will be interesting to see how we meet these challenges over the next two months.”

The new year was supposed to begin with a non-conference match up Tuesday against CreteMonee, but that game was postponed because of the weather.

Instead, Lemont will make its return to the court on the road Thursday night against Eisenhower after last playing at

“Taking care of the ball is huge, and also transition defense and spotting up on their shooters,” he said.

“They will take a lot of shots and when you shoot 50 or 60 shots a game, they will make shots. You have to be able to withstand their runs and realize that we will have a run too.”

After facing Eisenhower, the Indians are back at home against Richards.

“They are big and are having a good year,” the coach said of Richards.

“They have a Division I player in the post and good players on the perimeter.

That will be a big challenge for us.”

The squad, which received a few days off last week to take a break and recharge their batteries, returned to practice Saturday only to get Monday and Tuesday off due to the cancellation of school from cool weather.

It’s safe to say the Indians should start off the second half with fresh legs.

“I’m looking forward to getting back out there,” Runaas said. “Hopefully we come back with the right attitude.”

Bolingbrook’s potent offense, which has scored 80 or more points five times, including twice in the McDipper, will be tested Friday against an East team that likes to play a more slow, methodical game.

“I’ve seen [East] on a couple tapes and once in person, and they’re a solid club,” Brost said. “They recently got their point guard back that they didn’t have the first half of the season, and he helps them out a lot. They try to slow it down and play zone, so we’re going to have to be ready for that.”

Joliet Catholic still undefeated Angels now 13-0 this season after defeating Benet

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com LISLE – The Joliet Catholic girls basketball team emerged from the visitors locker room Wednesday determined to reconcile a subpar firsthalf performance against Benet.

Slashing through the lane, grabbing loose balls and knocking down almost every open look, the Angels sunk 7 of 9 shots to begin the third quarter, going on an 18-6 run and sealing a 65-44 victory over their East Suburban Catholic Conference rival.

With the win, Joliet Catholic (13-0, 2-0) remains perfect through 13 games this season.

But – as is often the case when facing a tough opponent on the road – the Angels stumbled out of the gates.

“We came out flat,” Joliet Central head coach Ed Schodrof said. “We were a half-step slow on defense and they did a good job of clogging the middle and limiting our inside looks.”

Early fouls committed

by Joliet Catholic kept the game within reach.

Although Benet shot just 2 of 19 from the field in the first half, the Redwings scored 10 points off of free throws as the Angels took a 27-15 advantage into the locker room.

Bad first period for Blackhawks nets loss

By SETH GRUEN sgruen@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The Hawks typically are a team that dominates the puck and rarely has a bad game.

And while that was the case again Wednesday when they bounced back from a bad first period in a game against the New York Rangers at the United Center, that initial period was bad enough to net the Hawks a 3-2 loss.

The loss snaps the Hawks’ 10-game point streak heading into Wednesday’s game.

The Hawks were a step slower in the offensive zone in the initial period, getting little traffic in front of the net and seemingly getting beaten to every puck.

In a more evenly played third period, Carl Hagelin scored the game-winner at 14:03 for the Rangers on a rebound after Hawks goal-

The Rangers first scored at 5:06 in the first

period when center Brad Richards hit a wrist shot from the right dot that hit the skate of Hawks defenseman Brent Seabrook then beat Crawford through the five-hole.

Although Seabrook’s skate did redirect the shot, it was soft goal that ended up being the difference.

About a minute later, the Hawks found themselves with their best – and really only –great scoring opportunity of the period when Brandon Saad missed an open net.

New York extended its lead to 9:29 on a power play goal by Mats Zuccarello at 9:29 after Brandon Bollig was called for roughing.

Again, it was a goal for which Crawford was culpable but not totally at fault.

Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson got beat behind the goal and Crawford was slow to come across, which opened up

the wraparound for Zuccarello.

The Hawks came out in the second period more dominant than the Rangers in the first, playing much of it in the offensive zone.

With the Hawks still trailing 2-0, Kris Versteeg nearly scored on a redirect about four minutes into the period. That appeared to ignite what looked like a different team.

Jonathan Toews scored a power-play goal at 6:17 and Brandon Bollig, who committed the penalty that allowed the power play in which they scored in the first period, tied the score at 2 with a wrister at 8:05.

Crawford, who has played well since returning from a groin injury Jan. 2 when the Hawks visited the New York Islanders, bounced back in a second period where he didn’t see much action.

2014 will be more challenging for Bears than 2013 I am not a big believer in trying to analyze nine months in advance just how tough an NFL schedule might be.

With also-rans becoming contenders practically overnight and teams going from worst to first every season in the past decade plus, last season’s results are not always a great predictor of what this season will hold.

That said, I still feel pretty safe in predicting 2014 will be a bit more challenging for the Bears than 2013 was.

This past season the Packers, Eagles, Bengals and Saints were the only playoff clubs the Bears faced, and none of their nine other opponents had winning records. In fact, four of those

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush nine clubs – St. Louis, Minnesota, Washington and Cleveland – finished last in their divisions.

The Bears’ other 2013 opponents included Detroit, Dallas, N.Y. Giants, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Do any of those clubs, with the possible exception of Baltimore, appear to you to be on the verge of a big improvement any time soon?

The 2014 schedule will, of course, again include Green Bay, Detroit and Minnesota. It’s impossible to predict how the

Vikings and Lions will look with new coaches, but it’s reasonable to assume the Lions will be a better team.

The Packers will most definitely be tougher if Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews play both games.

Beyond the NFC North, the Bears will get the AFC East next season and will have to travel to New England and the Jets. Those are definitely tougher trips than Pittsburgh and Cleveland were this year, and the Patriots are annually one of the toughest tests in the league.

Buffalo and Miami are both on the upswing but were also both very beatable in 2013.

Beyond the Bills and Dol-

phins, the Saints and Cowboys will also visit again as will Lovie Smith and his Bucs.

No real cupcakes at home, but no real juggernauts either, although who knows how much better the Saints might be?

It is the road that will be fraught with peril for the Bears in 2014. In addition to Lambeau, Ford Field, the Vikings temporary home at the University of Minnesota and New York and New England, they will also travel to Atlanta. The Falcons were the NFC’s No. 1 seed in 2012 and 2010 and, in spite of a 2013 season that blew up on them early, I expect them to be right back in the playoff hunt next season.

Finally come the booby prizes

as the Bears get to spend weekends in both San Francisco and Carolina.

While I’m sure Jim Harbaugh and Ron Rivera will be the most gracious of hosts, these may be the two best teams in the NFL this year and could be again in 2014. All counted, that’s just five games against 2013 playoff teams again, and only five with winning records in 2013. But it’s a lot more clubs with arrows pointing up, and a road schedule that looks like a juggernaut that will be tough to survive.

Thomas voted in on 1st ballot

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com For Frank Thomas, the greatest White Sox hitter of all time and one of baseball’s best right-handed batters ever, getting elected into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility made his head spin.

“I am so short of words right now. It’s hard to think,” Thomas said shortly after receiving the news at his home in the north suburbs. “I’m in the Hall of Fame on the first ballot.”

Thomas figured to make it on his first try and he received 83.7 percent of the vote from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in balloting announced Wednesday, comfortably above the 75 percent needed. But even

hours after finding out, he still hadn’t absorbed the magnitude of the moment, saying he’d need a few more days to catch his breath, reflect and sort out his feelings.

“People thought I was crazy because of my lofty expectations, but I really w a n t e d t o Frank d o s o m e - Thomas thing special, and I worked my butt of for it and am so proud of this moment,” Thomas said. “To get 83 percent of the vote, my family and I are extremely happy.”

Also elected were pitchers Greg Maddux (97.2 percent) and Tom Glavine (91.9), who also were on the ballot for the first

time. Second baseman Craig Biggio (74.8), who led the voting in 2013 but was not voted in, fell two votes short.

The Class of 2014 will be enshrined July 27 in Cooperstown, N.Y. A patient hitter who belted 521 home runs to go with a .301 batting average and .419 on-base percentage (20th all-time), Thomas also was one of the great sluggers of baseball’s modern era.

“Frank is the greatest hitter in White Sox history, a line-drive hitter and on-base machine with a slugger’s body,” chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement.

Theater to offer something for everyone in spring lineup

rom Broadway shows to family entertainment to concerts, the spring season at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet has something to offer everyone.

The Rialto’s fall season just concluded in December. The spring season will kick off Jan. 19 with the Rialto’s 22nd annual Bridal Expo.

The event has proven to be popular over the years.

“It’s pretty much a one-stop shop,” said Annette Parker, director of marketing and sales at the Rialto. “You can pretty much find everything you need for a wedding.”

The expo will feature 50 to 60 vendors along with seminars focusing on different topics.

Four Broadway shows will be featured in the spring season – “Hello, Dolly!” on Jan. 23, featuring Sally Struthers, “Sweet Charity” on March 4, “Memphis” on April 7 and Green Day’s “American Idiot The Musical” on April 23.

She sees “American Idiot The Musical” helping bring a crowd to the Rialto that might not usually take in a Broadway show.

“We’re excited to have that show,” Parker said. “ ‘American Idiot The Musical’ ” probably will bring in a little bit of a younger crowd that haven’t seen our Broadway shows in the past.”

Speaking of music, the spring season also will feature a number of concerts, including Chicago’s own Dennis DeYoung. DeYoung, who was

the longtime lead singer of the band Styx, will perform “The Music of Styx” on March 15.

Other concerts include Tommy James and the Shondells with the Ides of March on Feb. 14, Parrots of the Caribbean, a Jimmy Buffett tribute, on Feb. 22, and country stars Trisha Yearwood on Feb. 28 and Sara Evans on May 2.

The spring season will conclude with an appearance by blues legend B.B. King on May 31. This will be his first appearance at the Rialto in five years, Parker said.

The season also will feature appearances by the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. In ad-

dition, the Rialto will feature “Organ Extravaganza XVIII – Music of Your Life” on April 26. World renowned organists will come in and play at the event, which is now in its 18th year.

“We try to do a different theme every year,” Parker said. “This year’s theme is ‘Music of Your Life,’ featuring music of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.”

The Rialto itself has an original 1926 Barton Grand Theatre Pipe Organ, and the group Joliet Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts is based out of the theatre.

The stars of Syfy’s hit reality series, “Ghost Hunters,” also will appear at the Rialto on April 11. The Rialto was the subject of a “Ghost Hunters” episode, and the Rialto hosts paranormal tours of the historic building.

“There is definitely activity here that people have captured,” Parker said.

Latest ‘Paranormal’ brings new angles

t would be a wild exaggeration to suggest “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” breathes new life into the increasingly fumes-fueled found-footage horror subgenre, but it certainly represents a shot in the arm for this series after 2012’s poorly regarded “Paranormal Activity 4.”

Functioning more as a mythology-expanding spinoff than a proper sequel, this fifth installment (the first directed by longtime series writer Christopher Landon) smartly switches the setting away from airy suburbs to overcrowded, working-class apartments, and introduces a winning sense of humor that almost compensates for its relentless reliance on every terror trope in the book.

At this point, the conventions and limitations of the found-footage horror film are almost as well-worn and cliched as those of horror flicks at large: “Put down the camera, stupid!” has now probably been shouted at just as many screens as “Don’t go down into the basement!” (Look for “Tilt your viewfinder 20 degrees to the left!” to finally supplant “Look out behind you!” within the present decade.)

Appropriately, the hapless heroes of “The Marked Ones” never put down the camera even as they venture into dark basements, or struggle to start a stalled car, or split up in the middle of a haunted mansion – and it’s to the credit of the film’s primary cast that these bits of genre-appropriate stupidity generate more laughs than groans.

Kicking off with a high-school graduation, “The Marked Ones” centers on likably lunkheaded teenage buddies Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and Hector (Jorge Diaz), as well as Jesse’s tag-along relative Marisol (Gabrielle Walsh). Set in gritty Oxnard, Calif., the film boasts an almost entirely Latino cast of characters – a welcome gesture toward a huge filmgoing demographic that rarely gets to see itself onscreen – while smart casting and production design help capture the flavor of the environs with only moderate deployment of cultural stereotypes.

gangsters, draw penises on one another’s faces, and generally break each other’s balls for a decent chunk of the film. Fortunately, Jacobs and Diaz boast an easy “Beavis and Butt-head”-esque chemistry throughout, making for pleasant company as the audience waits for the inevitable horrors to befall them.

The first complication comes from Jesse’s elderly downstairs neighbor, Anna (Gloria Sandoval), whose reclusive behavior is strange enough for Hector to postulate that “maybe the bitch is a bruja.” The two try to spy on her by lowering a camera down through a ventilation shaft, where they witness Anna scrawling arcane symbols on the belly of a nude younger woman. Being teenage boys, they’re far too intrigued by the boobs on display to fret over the obvious occult ritual taking place, but when Anna is subsequently murdered, they decide to attempt some amateur late-night sleuthing, with predictably unpleasant results.

While the film hardly plays it coy about where this is all heading, it doesn’t seem to be in a rush to get there, and it springs a number of smart ideas along the way. Replacing the typical Ouija board with a haunted Simon game is sure to provoke howls of laughter from those in the appropriate age bracket, and the idea that a victim of demonic possession would rush to YouTube to show off his gnarly new abilities – and be promptly torn to shreds by comment section trolls – is sadly in keeping with the times.

The haunted house set-pieces provide reliable doses of jolts, even if one can see the scaffolding of each scare being built from miles away, and director Landon has fun with some clever camera placement here and there. A very meta twist ending promises to either open up new narrative possibilities, or else push the franchise deep into a self-referential rabbit hole.

Here is my final deal that was on the International Bridge Press Association short list for last year’s awards. It features an excellent defense by Shivam Shah (East) and Alex Roberts (West) for England against Poland at last year’s world youth championships in Taicang, China.

How did the defense go against five diamonds?

North opened with a Polish Club. It is usually bid with a balanced hand and 12-14 points, but it might be natural with five or more clubs and 12-17 points, or it could be any 18-plus pointer. After Shah’s three-heart pre-emptive overcall, South made a negative double. His four-diamond continuation was clearly forcing.

At the other table, the English North-South pair reached five diamonds by North, which was unbeatable. After East led a high heart, North could have taken 12 tricks, but decided on safety first.

Now back to Roberts’ lead problem. Many a West would be thinking it was lucky that the opponents stopped short of slam. His hand is dreadful and partner also announced weakness.

Roberts, though, wondered if there might be a way to defeat the contract. Maybe partner had a club void. So, West’s opening lead was the club three.

After Shah ruffed, the spotlight was on him. How could he get his partner on lead for a second club ruff? There seemed to be only two chances: the diamond ace or the heart queen. The first would still be available in a moment, but not the second. East shifted to the heart two. West won with his queen and gave his partner another ruff for down one.

C-reactive protein test offers evidence of heart disease Dear Doctor K: A few years ago my doctor told me that C-reactive protein was an important indicator of heart disease risk. At my last checkup, he didn’t mention it at all. Is it still considered important?

Dear Reader: C-reactive protein (CRP) is produced by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. Inflammation contributes to atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty deposits in blood vessel walls that’s responsible for most heart attacks and many strokes. CRP from inflamed plaques of atherosclerosis spills into the blood. Inflammation not only makes plaques of atherosclerosis grow faster; inflammation inside the plaques also makes them more likely to rupture. When even a small plaque ruptures, it can quickly cause a blood clot that suddenly stops the flow of blood to one part of the heart. That can cause a heart attack.

CRP isn’t dangerous in and of itself. Rather, it’s a sign of inflammation in the body. A new test, called the high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) test, measures inflammation of the blood vessels.

People with the highest CRP levels are about twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or other cardiac event as people with the lowest levels. That’s why CRP is used, along with other risk factors (such as cholesterol and blood pressure), to estimate cardiovascular risk. Your doctor may have been silent on the subject because the standards for using CRP are still evolving. For example, we don’t know what CRP target levels should be for men and women of different racial and ethnic groups. For now, risk assessment is based on the following CRP levels: • Below 1 mg/L = low risk • 1-3 mg/L = average risk • Above 3 mg/L = high risk

If you are already considered high risk for heart disease or are being treated for it, a CRP test is not necessary. The results won’t change how your condition is managed.

If you have a moderate risk of heart attack, a hsCRP test might help to more accurately place you in a high- or low-risk category. For example, if you are at moderate risk based on high cholesterol, you might move into the high-risk category if you also have elevated CRP. The result might be more aggressive treatment.

If you have other risk factors, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, ask your doctor about a hsCRP test. It might help to better assess your risk.

Like most issues in medicine, there is controversy about the value of measuring the hsCRP level in the blood. Some doctors think that it does not add important new information in calculating risk. As I look at the evidence, I think it is valuable.

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to respond to the 18-yearold guy who convinced his girlfriend that, even though he was snorting cocaine, he could control how often he used it and would never become addicted to the stuff. He probably believes that, but his girlfriend should not! In many cases, an addict is the last person to see the problem.

Most addicts think they can control their drug use.

I know what I’m talking about because I am a recovering cocaine addict who has been clean for two years. I was introduced to the “wonders of cocaine” when I was a first-year student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Until that time, I had never been involved in drugs of any kind, not even marijuana.

At first I thought I could control when and how much cocaine I used.

When I told this to my roommate, all he could do was laugh. He was the guy who showed me how to snort coke and he was addicted, and soon I had a new roommate because he stopped attending classes.

My world collapsed when he split the scene.

After my roommate left, I had to find another supplier. It wasn’t hard to do, but I had to pay for it – and it wasn’t cheap. At first, I started borrowing money from my parents, but after a while they became suspicious and stopped their flow of cash.

I had been a very good student, but I dropped out of the U of M midway through my second semester because of poor grades.

But I still had a cocaine problem. To “earn” a fast buck, I turned to armed

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace robbery. I bought a cheap handgun and started robbing liquor stores and small convenience stores in Detroit. My fourth robbery was my last one. I was identified even though I was wearing a disguise.

A hidden camera caught my face before I put on my ski mask. Getting caught actually turned out to be a blessing. I was sentenced to 21 months behind bars, but because of good behavior and an overcrowded facility, I was released in 14 months. I now have my life in good order. I’m back in school at Michigan State and plan to graduate, marry, and be a productive husband, father and citizen. I can’t live out my dream to become a lawyer because of my prison time, but I will find a profession that will accept me for what I will do, not what I’ve already done. Some nights I fall asleep thinking about what my life would have been like if I had never taken that first snort.

Why Kafka bio is a favorite book of 2013

By JOHN WINTERS More Content Now In 2006, German author and editor Reiner Stach told an American reporter there was no definitive biography of Franz Kafka.

Actually, there is. And he’s written it.

My favorite book of 2013 is actually two books, and they technically aren’t even new.

They are the second and third parts of Stach’s trilogy on the life of Franz Kafka, and thanks to excellent translations by Shelley Frisch, they are now available in English from Princeton University Press.

“Kafka: The Decisive Years” is the middle volume, covering the author’s most productive years, 1910 to 1915.

Drawing on a decade’s worth of research and more than 4,000 pages of letters, diaries, journals and other sources, Stach takes us through the writing of “The Trial” and “The Metamorphosis,” as well as Kafka’s troubled relationship with Felice Bauer and the outbreak of World War I. “Kafka: The Years of Insight” caps the trilogy, and covers the writer’s life from 1916 to his death in 1924, and the disintegration of Kafka’s world into an existence marked by isolation, perceived failures, illness and misery on several fronts.

(This year will see the publication of the translated first volume, covering Kafka’s youth.)

These are big books. The middle volume runs to 581 pages in paperback, the final one goes 100 more. It might seem a lot for an author who died at age 40 and whose

However, if ever there was a writer one could call singular, Kafka is it. His spellbinding stories bespeak alienation, the brutality of the modern world and the irrationality of life itself. Meanwhile, his style is enigmatic and marked by a remarkable precision of language, ideas and images. Kafka’s influence on other writers and world culture cannot be overstated.

Kafka the man was as confounding as he was brilliant.

In the central volume of his trilogy, Stach takes us, blow by blow, through his relationship with Bauer.

It is long and drawn out, but it paints perhaps the most detailed picture of Kafka’s inner life. The back-and-forth of this relationship occupies

a good deal of “The Decisive Years,” leading Stach to conclude: “It was the transition from the flight of the imagination to the drudgery of reality that was so difficult for Kafka... .” Kafka dreaded the idea of marriage, fearing it would rob him of the time necessary to write. As he once put it to his friend and literary executor, Max Brod: “A non-writing writer is a monster courting insanity.”

This volume also details Kafka’s struggle to find his voice and his writerly sense of confidence, and finally begin to achieve some small literary successes.

When he begins coughing up blood early in the final volume, and the post-war years, more failed romances, the famous “Letter to His Father,” and sinking fortunes begin to break him down, Kafka’s

psychology and relationship to reality is brought into even sharper focus. Stach makes the point that Kafka created a personal mythology in order to both survive this world and to be able to write.

Kafka self-consciously fed off Kierkegaard, who wrote in his diary: “As soon as a man comes along ... who says: “However the world is, I shall stay with my original nature, which I am not about to change to suit what the world regards as good... .’”

This sense of otherness shielded Kafka, and when disease strikes, he incorporates it into the myth, almost welcoming the freedom it gives him from the trivial aspects of life.

All of this is contextualized wonderfully by Stach, be it the Prague of the early 20th century, the Zionist movement, the mores of the time, the privations of the war years, the literary scenes of Prague and Berlin, or the world of tubercular sufferers.

Stach’s analysis is careful and always rooted in the facts of the life, or Kafka’s letters and diary, and only occasionally drawn from the stories and novels.

The writing is erudite, but not overly so, making these books both entertaining and enlightening for the expert and lay person alike. And it deserves mentioning again, Stach hit the lottery with a translator as fine as Frisch.

When I asked myself what book I most enjoyed reading the past year, these two volumes on Kafka kept leaping to the fore.

They are as close to flawless as more than 1,200 pages on this most challenging of writers can be.
