By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com Illinois health officials say reports of influenza are down this winter compared to recent years, with some saying it’s because the virus lives longer in weather that’s colder than this season has been so far.

Vic Reato, Will County Health Department spokesman, said that sentiment isn’t universally held. He said weather plays a role but not always and that there are other contributing factors people sometimes don’t know, he said. “[Viruses are] almost like roaches. They will find a way to sustain themselves,” he said.

Vic Reato Will County Health Dept. spokesman there were 49 flu-related intensive care unit admissions and two outbreaks from Dec. 20 to Dec. 26. During about the same time last year, there were 323 ICU admissions and 70 outbreaks statewide.

Health officials said flu reports are down in part because influenza lives longer in weather that’s colder or when it’s dry. If the weather is mild, the agent is not living as long.

Influenza – or the flu – is

a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Seasonal flu outbreaks can happen as early as October; most of the time the virus peaks between December and February, but it can last as late as May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Flu season already had peaked by this time in Chicago in the last three years, when conditions were colder.

But state and local health officials said it is expected to peak this year in January or February, following a more-typical trend.

Local health officials said there hasn’t been a surge in people getting vaccinated, suggesting that vaccination rates aren’t behind the reduction in flu cases so far. People still should get flu shots,

Gougar Road in Lockport set to be reopened Friday City reaches short-term solution with Will County; roadway closed since May 2014

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A short-term solution is being used to open Gougar Road between 147th and 151st streets in Lockport.

Lockport city officials announced Thursday in a news release the roadway should open Friday. Barricades north of Gougar Road and 147th Street will be moved to allow vehicles to travel from 151st Street to Lemont Road by taking 147th Street.

City officials said in the news release this is a shortterm solution with the Will County Division of Transportation for the next several months to resolve the issues that caused the road to remain closed for nearly two years.

City Administrator Ben Benson said city officials also were thankful for Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. working with them on the issue.

The opening of Gougar Road has been tied up in a Will County condemnation lawsuit with several property owners in the area. On Nov. 20, the Will County Board authorized the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office to proceed with the condemnation case. “[Will County] allowed us to come up with this temporary plan as the case plays out,” Benson said.

Nick Palmer, the county executive’s chief of staff, said the condemnation suit still is continuing. He said the county’s goal in the case is to keep

the roads safe for all residents and businesses.

The long-term solution will be to install a split-phase signal at Gougar Road and 143rd Street and then remove all the barricades completely, city officials said in the release.

Lockport city officials closed Gougar Road and 147th Street in May 2014 to make way for road improvements.

After the work was completed, the road remained closed to through traffic because of safety issues.

City officials wanted a traffic signal on 143rd Street at Gougar Road to keep the road safe, but Benson said last year property owners in the area were not cooperating in the acquisition of property needed to put a signal there.

“We anticipate there will be a peak. There’s always a peak,” Reato said.

Usually, the greatest indicator of influenza activity is absenteeism in schools but county health officials have noticed no increases there, he said.

Reato urged people who have not received a flu shot to get one. He said it takes two weeks to build an immunity to the virus, and if they get a shot now, they would be covered for the rest of the flu season.

Immigrant becomes first Plainfield library program graduate to obtain citizenship

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Lourdes Hernandez had minimal exposure to English after she immigrated to the United States from Mexico more than 20 years ago.

Her two daughters grew up here. The single mother in Plainfield has been driving to work in Mount Prospect for years.

“Sometimes, I say to my daughters, ‘I need to learn good English when I have my grandchild. I need to speak,’ ” Hernandez said. “But my daughters say, ‘No, [you] need to speak Spanish, too.’ ”

Hernandez’s co-workers are also Spanish-speaking workers. She just needed a rudimentary knowledge of English to get by.

But when her permanent residency was expiring last year, she wanted to take the ultimate step of obtaining citizenship.

That meant she needed to learn not only English, but also the history of the nation. Her daughters urged her to call Plainfield Public Library English language learner liaison Tania Hess.

Will County leaders target federal freight funds

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County leaders hope the area is among those selected when newly designated dollars are made available through Congress for much-needed freight transportation projects.

Congress this year has set aside federal dollars for the first time for a new discretionary grant program to fund nationally or regionally significant road, rail and waterway projects, said John Greuling, president and CEO for the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“Like everything that comes out of Washington [D.C.] and Springfield, we’ve got to be prepared when these monies become available,” Greuling said Thursday.

“There will be a lot of competition for these dollars.”

Called the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, the law authorizes $4.5 billion for local governmental bodies over the next five years in a highly competitive freight grant program. Another $6.2 billion will be given to the states over the next five years, with $226 million headed to Illinois, according to a report distributed earlier this week

Major upgrades are needed within the region’s freight corridors – such as Interstates 80, 55 and 57, Greuling said. But it will be up to local officials to prove to the federal government that those dollars are necessary in Will County, he added.

“It’s one thing to tee up projects we think may qualify,” Greuling said. “But one thing we’ve preached for a while now is Will County really needs a freight study identifying where the freight is coming from. … Where are the choke points?”

Council, created last year to give businesses a voice in addressing the region’s most pressing transportation challenges.

Greuling said he envisions the council creating freight policy and capital programs with county input.

Freight projects deemed priorities include road improvements, such as the widening of I-80 and I-55, and the

building of a bridge along Houbolt Road over the Des Plaines River in Joliet.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the Will County Executive Office, said another priority is turning Wilmington-Peotone Road into an east-west corridor for semis.

“Without the Illiana Expressway [which is on hold], we still need an east-west road to move goods from I-57 to

I-55. We need an alternative to I-80,” Palmer said.

Although the widening of Wilmington-Peotone Road would create a much-needed east-west access point for semitrailers into the CenterPoint intermodals in Joliet and Elwood, Palmer said he is not certain such a project will qualify for freight funding under the federal guidelines.

Will County to double cost share of DuPage River project

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County will chip in double what leaders expected to pay for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study investigating flood problems within the DuPage River watershed after the state recently backed out of paying its share.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources “is no longer a partner in the study,” because of the six-month budget impasse in Springfield, ac-

cording to a memo distributed this week to the Will County Board’s Executive Committee.

The state department has backpedalled on paying 50 percent of the required local match – or $750,000 – toward the $3 million project, according to the memo.

As a result, the local maximum obligation for both Will and DuPage counties is now $750,000 each, for a total local partner obligation of $1.5 million over three years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

would chip in the remaining $1.5 million.

Will County’s obligation stands at $709,475, with a possible maximum contribution of $750,000, according to the memo.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the Will County Executive’s Office, said the Will County Executive Committee on Thursday signed off on upping the county’s contribution, pending full board approval later this month.

“We agreed to cover the state’s portion,” Palmer said.

While it’s unfortunate, Palmer said, the state may become involved again later in the project.

The project is greatly needed, with historic flooding along the DuPage River, he said. Overbank flooding in April 2013 resulted in significant damage to critical infrastructures, several residential and nonresidential structures, and the closure of interstates 80 and 55.

A previous major flooding event in 2008 affected areas within Plainfield, Shorewood

and Channahon.

Will and DuPage counties are partnering with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to investigate overbank and backwater flooding along the DuPage River and its major tributaries.

Part of the study will focus on possible ways to reduce flood risks in affected areas, including Bolingbrook, Joliet, Romeoville, Crest Hill, Plainfield, Minooka and Channahon, along with Plainfield and Wheatland townships.

1970s-’80s band Styx set to play at Taste of Joliet

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Styx will be the headline band for the opening night of Taste of Joliet, the Joliet Park District announced Thursday.

Styx – the band from Chicago that rose to top-hit status in the 1970s and early 1980s with songs that included “Lady,” “Come Sail Away” and “Blue Collar Man” – will perform June 24 during the Taste, which runs June 24 to 26.

The announcement was the first for bands playing at Taste this summer.

“We’ve had good response,” park district spokesman Brad Staab said a couple of hours after the announcement was made. “We’ve already sold a lot of front-section seats. We’ve

been getting calls.”

Styx fits in with the Taste of Joliet theme of putting classic rock bands on stage on Friday night, the opening evening of the event. Other headline bands for opening night in past years have been REO Speedwagon and Cheap Trick.

Staab said he hopes to have an announcement in February for the headline act on Saturday, which is country music night at Taste.

The park district also announced prices for the concert. Front-section tickets are $40, which includes admission to the festival and a reserved section directly in front of the stage. General-admission tickets are $10 online and $15 the day of the show.

Prices are the same as last year, Staab noted.

“I do remember these, especially regarding the part with how much common sense Mr. Regis has – unlike the maniacal Judge Rozak,” the judge recalled as the defendant submitted them for a second time.

“Mr. Gold-Smith’s fantasy of any conversations we had is completely inaccurate,” Regis said.

Gold-Smith also asked Rozak to issue an order that his medication – including two psychiatric drugs – is given at times that won’t make him sleepy during the trial.

Capelli argued Gold-Smith’s own letters do not contain any definitive statements relevant to his trial, and Rozak agreed they are not admissible.

“If I accepted [defendant’s written summaries], there would be tens of thousands of letters on my desk. I’d be like the guy in ‘Miracle on 34th Street,’” Rozak said.

For the last several months, Larry Mikesh, 52, and Jason D. Gregory, 40, would travel to Chicago every two or three days and return with a supply to sell in the Wilmington area, Police Chief Phillip Arnold said Thursday.

“They’d come to our attention [because of] several different cases, and we reached out to a Drug Enforcement Administration task force,” Arnold said. “The task force brought in 15 guys. It gave us resources we just wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Shortly after noon Wednesday, police raided the duplex in the 30700 block of Southwest Frontage Road where Mikesh and Gregory reside. Police found about 16 grams of heroin, 6 grams of

Former Frankfort resident identified as suspect in fatal Zion police shooting The ASSOCIATED PRESS ZION – A man who was fatally shot by police while carrying a BB gun and photographing schools in Zion was a former resident of Frankfort and had a criminal record in Will County.

Carl Hollstein told the Daily Herald that his son, 38-year-old Charles J. Hollstein of Zion, was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young man. Carl Hollstein said his son had been in and out of mental health and nursing facilities.

As recently as 2004, Charles Hollstein was living in the 9700 block of West Steger Road in Frankfort, according to court records.

While living in the area, he was charged with domestic battery but found not guilty by reason of insanity and ordered to undergo mental health treatment.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday identified

Charles Hollstein as the man shot Wednesday while wearing a tactical-style vest and resisting officers. Hollstein was pro-

nounced dead at a local hospital.

At least seven schools were locked down during the incident.

Mikesh and Gregory were arrested on charges of delivery of drugs and booked into the Will County jail.

Mikesh’s sister also was living at the residence, but was not charged, Arnold said.

According to Will County court records, Mikesh was living in Cicero in 1994 when Bolingbrook police cited him with disorderly conduct.

Gregory has a substantial number of traffic charges on his criminal record. He also was convicted of theft after using someone else’s credit card at a store in Joliet in 2012.

JOLIET – A judge agreed Thursday that a Homer Glen attorney-turned-defendant could subpoena records from an informant’s psychiatrist.

But Robert W. Gold-Smith, 53, also is facing new witness tampering charges for allegedly having a former client put money in that informant’s prison account in exchange for rehearsing his testimony. Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Regis said GoldSmith sent letters and made phone calls to his former client from the Will County jail that were recorded.

Gold-Smith has been in jail since March 2011 for allegedly violating an order of protection filed by his then-wife in November 2010. Gold-Smith reportedly began approaching other jail inmates to have his wife killed, including Brian K. McDaniel, a career criminal

who agreed to wear a wire for detectives, authorities said.

Gold-Smith is charged with solicitation of murder and is representing himself.

Gold-Smith told Judge Daniel Rozak last month that McDaniel’s psychiatric records were needed as a legal foundation for how the informant will be characterized to a jury.

During Thursday’s court proceedings, Rozak told an attorney for the doctor it appears Gold-Smith’s subpoena is legally appropriate and should be complied with.

But the judge rejected GoldSmith’s efforts to have Regis, prosecutor Adam Capelli and assistant public defender Steve Whitmore testify at his upcoming trial.

Lockport OKs moratorium on future smoke and vape shops

AHMAD Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – With growing concern among federal agencies and local authorities regarding the possible health risks associated with electronic cigarettes, the Lockport City Council has approved a six-month moratorium on issuing any new zoning licenses to businesses selling these products.

Council members approved a resolution Wednesday night freezing until July 1 the opening of any business that falls under the city’s definition of a “tobacco/head/ smoke shop.”

According to the resolution, which was presented to the Committee of the Whole at its Dec. 16 meeting, the 180day moratorium “will allow city staff an opportunity to conduct research and determine whether a change to the City’s current codes and ordinances is necessary.”

The resolution comes at the recommendation of the city’s administration, according to City Attorney Thomas Thanas, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and legislators in Springfield have reported growing concern about the effects of e-cigarettes and similar products.

According to the FDA’s website, “electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, are battery-operated products designed to deliver nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. They turn chemicals, including highly addic-

tive nicotine, into an aerosol that is inhaled by the user.”

The state does not allow these products to be sold to minors, but accessibility to minors still is a concern for the city, according to the resolution.

“Staff is concerned with any problems of misuse or health issues,” Thanas said after the meeting.

Use, concern grows

A joint FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study in 2014 found the use of the products among middle and high school students had tripled from 2013 to 2014.

In October, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan joined attorney generals from 33 states in calling for tighter federal regulations on e-cigarettes to protect children and young adults from nicotine addiction.

Sale of the products, a billion-dollar industry, has remained largely unregulated, but the FDA has started taking steps to change this.

In 2014, the FDA made a proposal to extend its authority over tobacco products to any product meeting the legal definition of tobacco, including e-cigarettes. The proposed rules have not taken effect yet.

The goal for Lockport during the next six months is to establish whether the city would need to place stricter zoning regulations on vape shops – the common term for businesses selling

the products – such as moving them away from parks and schools as well as requiring a special-use permit, Thanas said.

Currently in Lockport, vape shops only have to meet regular commercial zoning requirements to be approved.

The research will be conducted by the office of Pam Hirth, director of community and economic development.

Hirth’s office will look at action taken by neighboring municipalities and get information from the FDA and CDC on possible health risks, Thanas said.

Along with two tobacco shops, the city has one vape shop as well as two more awaiting approval. The moratorium will only affect any new businesses, not pending cases. The city recently has received a large number of calls from parties interested in setting up these shops, according to Hirth.

Any decision the city makes will be based solely on a review of the information gathered by Hirth’s office, Thanas said.

“At the end, our research may show that these businesses need to be handled like any other business [under our current ordinances], or we may find that we may need more zoning restrictions,” he said.

Alderman Darren Deskin voted yes for the proposal but said he wants the council to receive regular reports on the research, rather than a conclusion at the end of six months.

Becoming a citizen

To obtain U.S. citizenship, applicants need to fill out and mail in a 21-page application from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services with a $680 fee.

The applicant can’t have committed a felony and is screened using a terrorist list.

The applicant goes through an interview consisting of dozens of civic and vocabulary questions.

He or she also is required to speak English with a passing proficiency.

Hernandez enjoyed learning about the history of the United States during the process. She said the toughest part of her path to citizenship was the language, particularly one word.

“That word, spelling ‘Thanksgiving,’ it was just so hard,” she said.

Hess, who also helps run ELL conversation classes, said the citizenship program hasn’t expanded much because of the limited space of the library.

But volunteer mentors have been vital to the success of the program, which hopes to boast two more new citizens in a couple months.

“We assist many people with their needs as far as applying for citizenship or petitioning a relative.”

The Spanish Community Center, at 309 N. Eastern Ave. in Joliet, offers noncitizen residents with a starting point to apply for citizenship.

“We assist many people with their needs as far as applying for citizenship or petitioning a relative,” said Elizabeth Nevarez, the center’s executive director.

The center handles more than 2,000 inquiries for immigration services for Joliet area residents every year, Nevarez said. That includes help for citizenship, residency, green card renewal, deferred action for childhood arrival and domestic violence victims.

The center used to regularly host English classes for applicants. But it now partners with Joliet Junior College and the University of St. Francis, which run their own classes.

Hernandez said her English is far from perfect. She hopes to continue learning.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said.

By CARLA K. JOHNSON DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHICAGO – An Illinois appeals court decision has reopened a statewide dispute over whether hospitals should be exempt from paying millions of dollars in income taxes and property taxes to local governments.

The Illinois 4th District Appellate Court ruled Tuesday that part of a 2012 law that allows hospitals to avoid taxes is unconstitutional.

The issue, which brewed for years before a legislative compromise defined how hospitals could qualify for tax breaks, is likely headed to the Illinois Supreme Court, as well as lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner, according to Laurence Msall of the Civic Federation, a nonpartisan government research group.

“The Legislature could wait (until the Supreme Court rules), but issues will continue to mount,” Msall said. “The Illinois Department of Revenue needs some direction from both the Legislature and the (Rauner) administration on how to handle pending applications.”

Five hospitals have applications for tax exemptions before the revenue department: Peoria-based Methodist Services Inc. (two applications), NorthShore University Health System in Lake Forest, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chi-

cago and Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago.

This week’s ruling involves a case against the city of Urbana and other local taxing districts brought by Carle Foundation Hospital, which was seeking relief from taxes in 2004 to 2011.

A lower court sided with the hospital, but the appeals court reversed that decision, saying the Illinois Constitution allows lawmakers to exempt only property “used exclusively” for “charitable purposes.”

“An unconstitutional statute is unenforceable from the moment of its enactment,” the ruling states.

Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing anticipates the hospital, which had been the largest taxpayer in the city of 41,000, will try to get the case in front of the Illinois Supreme Court.

“Part of the inequity in the tax system is we have these very wealthy entities that can afford all kinds of lobbying to wiggle their way out of responsibilities,” Prussing said.

Since 2012, Prussing said, the city has lost 11 percent of its assessed tax value since Carle was relieved of paying $6.5 million a year in property taxes – the vast majority of which went to Urbana and its school district.

Carle spokeswoman Jennifer Hendricks-Kaufmann said the hospital is considering options, including an

appeal.

The Illinois Health and Hospital Association also expressed dismay, with spokesman Danny Chun saying the law “had ended a decade of uncertainty regarding the test for hospital property tax exemption.

“The law is clear, fair and reasonable,” he added.

The Illinois Supreme Court weighed in on the issue in 2010, when it suggested nonprofit hospitals that behave like businesses shouldn’t qualify for tax exemptions. Citing that court decision, the state Department of Revenue denied tax exemptions to three hospitals in 2011 and signaled more denials for other hospitals could follow.

That led to lawmakers’ actions in 2012, in which hospitals won a broad definition of charity care and were required to provide free care to some patients.

Investor-owned hospitals, too, were included in the tax break in a little-noticed provision that cost the state $10 million a year in lost revenue, according to an AP analysis at the time.

“This could require, in the end, an amendment to the Constitution in order to affect the needed change,” said Msall of the Civic Federation, which supported the 2012 legislation as “a reasonable compromise” that balanced the interests of hospitals and government.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Six people accused of abducting and torturing two University of Rochester students – one of whom is a former Romeoville resident – until a SWAT team stormed in have been charged in a 32-count indictment that adds charges of sexual assault and weapons counts.

The grand jury indictment unsealed Wednesday shows the “extreme torture” the two young men endured during the 40-hour ordeal inside a Rochester, New York, house early last month, Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said. She declined to comment on a possible motive, saying the continuing investigation could lead to more arrests and charges.

“As far as the victims are concerned,” Doorley said in a news release, “we know they are both very fortunate in that they were located by the good work of the [Rochester Police Department] SWAT team.”

The three men and three women named in the indictment, all in their late teens or 20s, were arrested in December and pleaded not guilty to initial kidnapping charges. The grand jury indictment adds

varying counts of assault, gang assault, sexual assault and weapons charges.

The victims, both college seniors, were reported missing Dec. 5, hours after they were last seen near the University of Rochester campus. The incident ended Dec. 6 when police determined they were being held in a house four miles away and sent in a SWAT team to rescue them. One of the victims had been shot in the leg.

The Associated Press no longer is identifying the students because it does not disclose the names of victims of sexual assault.

The indictment includes nine counts of predatory sexual assault against Dennis Perez and Lydell Strickland, who also are charged with multiple counts of gang assault, robbery, weapons possession and criminal use of a firearm.

Leah Gigliotti and Samantha Hughes are charged with kidnapping, assault and gang assault. Inalia Rolldan and David Alcaraz-Ubiles are charged with kidnapping and weapons counts. Alcaraz-Ubiles also is charged with assault. Arrested last, he is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 20.

The others are due in state Supreme Court in March.

Rauner implements merit pay for some; AFSCME opposed

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration is starting a new compensation system for some state workers that includes merit pay and bonuses for saving taxpayers money, a plan the former businessman says will make government more efficient.

But Illinois’ largest public-employee union is balking at the Republican’s idea, saying it’s “ripe for abuse” and political favoritism and that bonuses shouldn’t replace regular salary increases as Rauner has proposed.

It’s the latest sticking point in long-running negotiations between Rauner’s office and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents about 36,000 state employees. The two sides have been in contract talks for more than a year – including several days this week – but remain far from an agreement. The previous contract expired June 30, although both sides agreed last year to keep negotiating without the possibility of a strike, work slowdown or lockout.

The administration is implementing the new pay system for employees not covered by union contracts and with members of 17 of the state’s smaller public-employee unions covering more than 5,000 state workers that have signed new collective bargaining agreements since Rauner took office, general counsel Jason Barclay told agency directors in a memo Wednesday.

Barclay said the administration has proposed a similar deal for AFSCME. It would provide a bonus pool equal to 2 percent of annual payroll for union employees.

One-quarter of that money

would go to workers who miss no more than seven “assigned work days” and don’t commit any “work policy violations” in a fiscal year, the memo states.

The rest of the bonus pool would go to workers who meet performance standards that would be set by their agency “in consultation with the union.”

AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall said the plan would allow Rauner’s agency heads, whom he appoints, to reward certain workers based on criteria they set.

“This Rauner plan would open the door to cronyism and favoritism that AFSCME believes should be kept out of government entirely,” Lindall said.

Rauner deputy chief of staff Mike Schrimpf accused AFSCME of using scare tactics to outright reject a “reasonable proposal that should generate discussion.”

Half of Ill. schools won’t keep fronting MAP grant money

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois colleges put up $168 million of their own money to help students attend classes last fall because there’s no state budget deal, but nearly half of those responding to a survey about the Monetary Award Program say they can’t do it again this spring.

The deadlock over the spending plan that should have taken effect July 1 will force college students in need to make some tough choices, the survey released Thursday by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission indicates.

The commission, a clearinghouse for student aid, surveyed 133 colleges and universities, receiving 84 replies. They showed 41 schools would not carry the MAP load for students again this spring and about a dozen more haven’t decided.

The popular, bipartisan MAP provided income-based grants totaling $373 million last school year. Although there wasn’t a budget agreement when classes began again in August, three in five fronted the money out of reserves because state re-

imbursement typically doesn’t arrive until December.

Of 31 that indicated to ISAC they would continue upfront spring payments, several said they’d pursue reimbursement from students if the state doesn’t come through; half said they were undecided on making students pay in such a case.

“It’s obviously a serious situation,” said Pat McGuire, a Joliet Democrat who heads the Senate Higher Education Committee. At his request, ISAC reported that schools statewide had provided $168 million of their own money for the fall semester. ROCKFORD – Authorities in northern Illinois said a 15-yearold girl whose charred remains were found outside a mobile home died of a drug overdose.

Stephenson County Coroner Tom Leamon said Wednesday that Andreayah McBain had morphine, Xanax and a third antidepressant drug in her system. The coroner said the cause of her death was “a bunch of the drugs mixed together.” A McBain family spokesman had no comment and said relatives are awaiting more information.

Rockford police said they plan to review the new information and consult with Winnebago County prosecutors about next steps in the case, including whether to pursue charges against any suspects.

The girl’s remains were found in October west of the Seward Forest Preserve in a rural area of Stephenson County.

U of Illinois bans hoverboards in dormitories

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois’ flagship campus is telling students not to bring hoverboards to school when they return from the holiday break.

Urbana-Champaign campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the two-wheeled scooters are banned in university housing and eventually might become contraband all over campus. A message sent to students said, “Don’t bring them to campus!”

Kaler said university administrators are crafting a policy for the campus and plan to have it finished by the time students return Jan. 19.

University of Illinois-Chicago spokesman Bill Burton said that campus also is considering action.

At least 20 U.S. universities have banned or restricted hoverboards in recent weeks over concerns their batteries can catch on fire.

Illinois State University officials said they have no plans to restrict hoverboards.

Black firefighters want U.S. review of Chicago Fire Dept.

CHICAGO – A group of black Chicago firefighters is asking for a federal investigation into the operations of the city’s fire department.

African American Firefighters & Paramedics League founder James Winbush said Commissioner Jose Santiago has turned a deaf ear to concerns the department doesn’t hire enough African-American firefighters.

He said Santiago should be dismissed, adding efforts to address the lagging number of black firefighters has been going on for five years with no results.

The firefighters group’s president, fire Lt. Gregory Boggs, said part of a 1980 agreement requires that 30 percent of all firefighters in each rank be African-American.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he and Santiago have taken a leadership role in cleaning up a fire department with a long and documented history of discrimination.

Obama, seeking support for gun actions, tears into NRA

By JOSH LEDERMAN and KEVIN FREKING The Associated Press FAIRFAX, Va. – President Barack Obama tore into the National Rifle Association on Thursday as he sought support for his actions on gun control, accusing the powerful lobby group of peddling an “imaginary fiction” that he said has distorted the national debate about gun violence.

In a prime-time, televised town hall meeting, Obama dismissed what he called a “conspiracy” alleging that the federal government – and Obama in particular – wants to seize all firearms as a precursor to imposing martial law. He blamed that notion on the NRA and like-minded groups that convince its members that “somebody’s going to come grab your guns.”

“Yes, that is a conspiracy,” Obama said. “I’m only going to be here for another year. When would I have

started on this enterprise?”

Obama defended his support for the constitutional right to gun ownership while arguing it was consistent with his efforts to curb mass shootings. He said the NRA refused to acknowledge the government’s responsibility to make legal products safer, citing seatbelts and childproof medicine bottles as examples.

Taking the stage at George Mason University, Obama accused the NRA of refusing to participate in the town hall despite having its headquarters nearby.

“Since this is a main reason they exist, you’d think that they’d be prepared to have a debate with the president,” Obama said.

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said beforehand that the group saw “no reason to participate in a public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House.” Several NRA members were in the audience for the event, which was or-

ganized and hosted by CNN. And the NRA pushed back on Twitter in real time, noting at one point “none of the president’s orders would have stopped any of the recent mass shootings.”

The White House has sought to portray the NRA, the nation’s largest gun group, as possessing a disproportionate influence over lawmakers that has prevented new gun laws despite polls that show broad U.S. support for measures such as universal background checks.

Last year, following a series of mass shootings, Obama pledged to “politicize” the issue in an attempt to level the playing field for gun control supporters.

The American Firearms Retailers Association, another lobby group that represents gun dealers, did participate Thursday. Asked how business had been since Obama took office, Kris Jacob, vice president of the group, replied: “It’s been busy.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR The four freedoms

To The Editor, On Jan. 6, 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered to the nation a speech (which became famous) known as The Four Freedoms Speech.

He felt these freedoms should be guaranteed to all men and women everywhere. First was freedom of speech; second, freedom of worship; third, freedom from want (need); and fourth was freedom from fear.

That was 75 years ago; seeing we’re now in 2016. I pray every reader, every person in this city, state and nation (people everywhere around the globe), learn about these freedoms.

And that they evaluate these freedoms to see how close or how far we are to achieving these freedoms for all. And finally, that we aspire to acquire these freedoms.

I’m not a historian; I’m just a homeless street minister who preaches Jesus and pushes a bike with decorated carts, with my little white dog by my side. I’m not the most intelligent person in the world. At 13 years old I thought I knew so much. I’m 53 years old now and fully aware of how much I don’t know.

One thing I do know is experience is one of the best teachers. History is the experience of many people. Some of it teaches us what to do and some things we shouldn’t do.

To quote the great philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist George Santayana: “Those who don’t read history are doomed to repeat it.” And to quote Will Rogers, “Chaotic action is preferable to orderly inaction.”

God help us all.

We are better prepared now to prevent flooding Illinois saw firsthand the havoc flooding creates for people, property, communities and infrastructure in December and early January, after the Midwest experienced several days of heavy rain. Rivers became lakes, levees broke, property and infrastructure were severely damaged or wiped away, and worse, several people were killed.

While our area dodged much of the heavy rain that caused these floods, it’s not a matter of “if we will have another flood,” but “when we will have another flood.”

Consider this: The state of Illinois has the largest collection of inland bodies of water and rivers in the continental United States. Twelve percent of surface in Illinois is mapped as a flood plain. My 38th Senate

GUEST VIEW Sen. Sue Rezin District, which stretches from Bureau County on the west to Will County on the east, has about 130 miles worth of river frontage, one of the most in the state. Ottawa alone is the watershed for 12,000 square miles.

Flooding is serious and it requires a serious approach to prevent losses of property, infrastructure and life. Several years ago, a number of communities along the Illinois and Fox rivers lived the hardships that come with severe flooding.

Many of our neighborhoods, businesses and infrastructure were destroyed. That’s why after that flood, my office teamed

up with local leaders across the 38th Senate District and started the Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance. The IVFRA brings communities, local governments, and emergency personnel together to prepare for extreme weather events, especially floods, through education, communication, and the purchasing of flood prevention materials. The IVFRA includes LaSalle, Grundy, Bureau and Putnam counties. The IVFRA already has good resiliency plans in place right now for the region. The IVFRA also is hoping to soon secure grant funding for communities to help prevent flood losses.

The IVFRA is already receiving statewide and national exposure – first, from the Illinois Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Man-

agement, and also from the Association of State Flood Plain Managers. The city of Ottawa also received $25,000 in the “Solutions Search” national contest seeking ways to reduce the risk of weather-related disasters in communities, especially flooding.

The goal is simple: Be prepared now and know how to properly fight flooding, so when our next flood occurs, we can save lives, property, homes and infrastructure.

I am very happy our communities are taking a proactive approach, so we can prevent what happened in 2013.

“I like how we’re wrestling so far this year,” Raiders coach Dan Bullivant said. “We’re 7-2 with our only losses to Sandburg and Lockport. We’ve got a tough road ahead with mega duals at Lincoln-Way Central this weekend and Lockport next week, and there will some key matchups for conference and

regional seed. Our 145-pounder, Titus Wonsey, has a torn ACL, so he’s out for the rest of the season. That was a heartbreaker for the team and for him, but we’ll move on and go with the horses that we have.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: LEWIS 54, DRURY 41

Lewis women overwhelm No. 6 Drury

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The Lewis-Drury matchup was touted as the Division II Women’s Basketball Game of the Week.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference battle lived up to that expectation Thursday as No. 9 Lewis topped No. 6 Drury, 54-41, at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers have won eight straight and remain undefeated in conference.

What could be more impressive than the “upset” victory was Lewis’ ability to limit Drury’s offense. Aside from Lewis, the Panthers’ lowest scoring game was 61 points.

“Defense was the main focus of this game,” senior Alyssa Dengler said. “This was a big game for us. We really wanted to get the win and that was a huge defensive win.”

“I was shocked,” coach Kristin Gillespie said. “I was like, who is this team? In the locker room I said, ‘You guys are in

trouble. You showed how you really can defend.’ They [Drury] have one of the best offenses in the country. They have scorers at every position. They’re top two or three in 3-point shooting, so we just devised a plan and really kind of stayed with it, and we were pretty successful.”

Lewis’ defense was led by reigning GLVC Player of the Week, Mariyah Brawner-Henley. The senior forward posted half of Lewis’ rebounds with 23 and added 13 points – seven in fourth quarter – for her 11th double-double of the season.

She leads the nation in double-doubles and has posted one in 73 percent of this season’s games.

“I don’t really go into the game saying I’m going to get a double-double,” Brawner-Henley said. “It’s my work ethic, I think, my ability to rebound the ball, and it’s great I can score also. I just feel great about that.”

It’s no surprise Brawner-Henly dominated on the

boards, but the Flyers (13-1, 4-0) needed its combined team effort offensively to beat Drury (10-2, 3-1).

In the opening moments, Dengler hit a 3-pointer off of a beautiful assist by freshman Jessica Kelliher.

Kelliher and Dengler continued to dominate in the first half, scoring all of their 10 and eight points, respectively. Kelliher added three assists, three rebounds and a block, while Dengler added five rebounds, two blocks and two assists.

At the half, Lewis had a 3016 lead, but the Flyers needed offense across the board to keep the lead in the second half.

“I think the big thing was when our starting guard, Jamie Johnson, got hurt, it was a big moment for all of us to step up because Mariyah and Jess can’t do everything,” Dengler said.

“They doubled them the whole game so we really needed to step up and make a difference.”

The second half is when Dru-

ry started displaying glimpses of its strong offense. The Flyers never trailed, but Drury made it as close as 41-35 in the fourth quarter.

Going into the last two quarters with one point, Alyssa Siwek drove to the net to make two critical layups to stop Drury’s momentum. The junior finished with 10 points.

Tiana Karopulos and Alex Poole both added four points, Kayla Brewer three and Tierney Lockett two.

“I’m so proud of our team.

They showed a ton of heart and character,” Gillespie said. “We weren’t really sure what their game plan would be. I knew they would try and take Mariyah and Jess out of the game offensively, but our team kept stepping up and finding ways to score the ball.”

The year has been filled with obstacles for the Flyers, who lost Johnson early in the season to a torn ACL. The Flyers keep finding ways to win, however.

“It’s definitely been a roller coaster ride with a lot of injuries, but we don’t want to quit,” Brawner-Henley said. “We love fighting each and every game, and we come together and have each others’ backs, so we keep playing hard for 40 minutes and we’re able to get the win.

“We just want to be winners.”

Even though Lewis was happy with the win, beating Drury is not the season’s main focus.

“This was a big game, but we still have two more months until what really matters: the national championship, conference,” Dengler said. “This was a big game, but we need to get better from here.”

“I do think it gives our team some confidence,” Gillespie said. “They weren’t real happy last year when they came in and beat them for the first time. I think they’re just excited that monkey’s off our back, and we can compete with anyone.”

Things got off to a great start for the Raiders against the Tigers after they won the first four matches to jump out to a commanding 20-0 advantage.

Clarence Golden opened with a 5-1 victory over Jonathan Pullen at 152 and then Gage Goodwin followed with a win by technical fall. After Joshua Afriyie recorded a fall in 2:46 at 160, Rafael Mendoza received a forfeit win at 182 to give the visitors a 20-point lead.

“I have to give a big shout out to our coaches – coach Kyle, coach Donny and coach Bullivant – since they put in a lot of time for us, especially over the summer,” Golden said. “And in practice, I wrestle with Gage, and he pushes me a lot.

“I remember my freshman year on varsity, and we started off as a young team and we were getting beat by them.

But finally last year everyone started coming together and putting in more work, and we all started progressing as a group. The thing that I like the most about this team is the heart, pride and the honor that we have for each other.”

West picked up its first win at 195 when Will Spruell claimed a 7-3 victory over Isaiah Herrera. The Tigers followed with two more decisions to close to within 20-9 midway through the meet as Meekah Ben-Israel beat Demetrius Crisanto 4-1 at 220 and Robert Ford followed with a 4-1 win over Ian

Bazan at heavyweight.

Three straight forfeits kicked off the lower weights.

Dylan Burnoski (106) and Ethan O’Brien (120) claimed wins for the Raiders while Darvell Flagg (113) did the same for the Tigers.

Bolingbrook got two more wins as John O’Brien beat Marco Paramo 15-8 at 126 and Frank Rodriguez added a major decision. West got wins in the final two matches as Josh Durrly prevailed 7-3 over Xevion Rolle at 138 and Raekwon Dilworth claimed a major decision.

It’s been a frustrating season for West due to injuries.

Coach Chuck Rumpf hopes that his Tigers will finally be healthy when they take part in the Class 3A Providence Regional.

winless for all I care, as long as we’re ready. There’s a couple of people that we’re not sure if we’re going to get back but there’s a couple that we know we are, so we’ll be in better shape. These guys have turned into a team. They’ve got each others’ backs and they’re family.”

This season, the survivor at Lockport also will have a reasonable chance to advance to Peoria.

There are no givens, of course. You have to play the games. But the feeling here is the IHSA has done our area a favor, again lumping all our Class 4A teams into the same sectional complex.

As for our area teams in Class 3A, things will be competitive beginning at the regional level.

The Streator Sectional, which feeds into the Joliet Central Supersectional, has 10 teams in Sub-Sectional A, including Joliet Catholic, Lincoln-Way West and Providence. Hillcrest and Rich South are other good teams that also are in that sub-sectional.

JCA and Lincoln-Way West are primed for solid seasons, and Providence coach Tim Trendel has said often that he feels his team will be ready to be a factor in the 3A tournament. Hillcrest and Rich South are no slouches, either.

The regional hosts in that sub-sectional will be Lincoln-Way West and Thornridge.

The sectional opponents for those survivors will come from Sub-Sectional B, where Coal City, Morris and Peotone will be among the 11 entries and Kankakee and Plano will be regional hosts.

At this point, it appears the teams that win the regionals in Sub-Sectional A will have a good shot at reaching the sectional final.

However, that’s where things get extra scary.

Two of the Chicago Public League’s best, Morgan Park and Bogan, are in the St. Laurence Sectional that will supply the opponent for the Joliet Central Supersection-

Last season, the Joliet area had a good shot at getting a boys basketball team to a Class 4A supersectional at least in part because of how the teams were assigned to sectionals.

More of the same this season.

Thirteen of the 21 schools assigned to the Lockport Sectional belong to our area.

They are Lockport, Joliet West, Joliet Central, Bolingbrook, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Minooka, Romeoville, Lemont, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Plainfield East and Plainfield North. Also in the field will be Lincoln-Way North, Sandburg, Neuqua Valley, Oswego, Oswego East, Stagg, Andrew and Yorkville.

The online seeding for large-school sectionals is scheduled Feb. 18, with the regionals slated for the week of Feb 29.

That means there are six weeks of regular-season games remaining, beginning this weekend, for teams to make their case for a favorable seed – besides aiming for the highest possible conference finish.

Predetermined regional hosts leading into the Lockport Sectional are Minooka, Lincoln-Way Central, Neuqua Valley and Andrew.

Each regional will have one of the 1 through 4 seeds, one of the 5 through 8 seeds and the host school. The remainder of the regional fields will be filled in from there.

The way this season has gone, a majority of the area teams in the Lockport Sectional are capable of playing their way into a good seed.

Not to overlook Oswego, Neuqua Valley or anyone else, but at this juncture, Joliet West would be the potential No. 1 seed and Lincoln-Way Central, Minooka, Plainfield North, Joliet Central, Bolingbrook and perhaps a couple of others also could be candidates for coveted high seeds.

The winner of the Lockport Sectional will face the winner of the Aurora East Sectional in the supersectional at Northern Illinois

AREA ROUNDUP SUBMITTED REPORTS WHITING, Ind. – Mary Rouse (Joliet Catholic) and Cody Brand each tallied 14 points as the No. 7-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team rolled over Calumet College of St. Joseph, 8639, on Thursday in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Saints (15-1, 7-0), who take on No 1 Saint Xavier at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sullivan Center, won their 21st consecutive regular-season game against an NAIA opponent.

Calumet St. Joseph (1-16, 0-8) suffered its fourth straight loss.

The Saints led 26-8 after one quarter and 51-18 at halftime.

Reserves combined to score 61 of the Saints’ 86 points. Alexis Brown and Trish Stritzel finished with 11 points each.

Brand’s 14 points marked her career scoring high while Rouse’s 14 points equaled her career best. Brand also had six assists and four steals. Seeing action for the first time this year, senior Khadija Cooley (Joliet West) contributed five points, six steals and four assists in 22 minutes.

Gasol, Rose lead way to victory

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Pau Gasol had 17 points and 18 rebounds, Derrick Rose scored 18 points, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Boston Celtics 101-92 on Thursday night for their sixth straight victory.

Jimmy Butler added 19 points and 10 assists.

The Bulls used a big third quarter to extend their longest win streak of the season and handed the Celtics their fourth loss in five games.

Boston coach Brad Stevens missed this one to visit cancer-stricken former Butler center Andrew Smith, who played on the Bulldogs’

two runs to the national championship game. He has been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant Thursday, according to The Boston Globe.

With assistant Jay Larranaga filling in for Stevens, Boston got 17 points from Jae Crowder. Kelly Olynyk added 16 points and nine rebounds, but the Celtics shot just 35.7 percent and were 5 of 25 on 3-pointers.

Isaiah Thomas scored 14 but missed all four 3s while shooting 5 of 17 overall. Jared Sullinger added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Boston.

The Celtics got outscored 26-16 and shot 7 of 32 as Chicago stretched a one-point

halftime lead to 74-63.

It was 61-49 with just over 8 minutes left in the third quarter after Gibson hit a hook shot, finishing a 15-2 run that started with a fadeaway by Rose near the end of the first half.

Gasol, who scored eight in the quarter, had a pair of baskets during that run.

Butler scored seven in the period, and the Bulls were never really threatened down the stretch.

The Bulls scored 10 in a row to tie it at 43-all, with Butler capping that spurt with a ridiculous threepoint play. He flung the ball in from 19 feet after getting bumped by Crowder on the perimeter and hit the free throw with 2:12 remaining.

They’ve been somewhat overshadowed by the well-documented challenges on offense.

Last week, the Packers held NFL rushing champion Adrian Peterson to 67 yards on 19 carries, and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to 10 of 19 for 99 yards passing in a 20-13 loss to

Minnesota.

The Packers are allowing 20.2 points a game, ranked 12th in the NFL. That would be more than enough in most seasons for the once-prolific offense.

“They’re (keeping) them out of the end zone, making them kick field goals. Three and outs are up. They’re being aggressive,” McCarthy said about the defensive performance of late.

But this is no ordinary sea-

on the defensive side of the ball.

Just a few seasons back, it was the defense and coordinator Dom Capers that took more of the criticism.

What players can’t do is “expend any energy on something you don’t control. If you do, it’s wasted energy,” Capers said this week when asked if he had to be on guard for any sense of frustration with his defensive players.

“To me, you show the strength of the defense by going out in those tough situations and performing, going out and making plays, try to set up our offense to put them in great field position,” Capers said.

He knows what it takes to succeed in the postseason. Capers was the coordinator in the 2010 season, when the Packers finished in fifth in total defense and second in scoring defense in winning the Super Bowl.

Matthews and Raji were key contributors on that team, just as they are for this season.

“There’s been some times when we haven’t played great, but collectively I think we’ve played well this entire season,” Raji said. “I don’t think that should change any.”

Vikings coach: Adrian Peterson’s back will not keep him out

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI AP Sports Writer EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The Minnesota Vikings head into the playoffs looking like a team on the rise, with a second-year head coach pushing the right buttons, a 23-year-old quarterback still figuring things out and a young, fast, aggressive defense that only figures to get better in the coming seasons.

For all those reasons, the optimism is high that Sunday’s game against Seattle will be the first of many playoff appearances for the Vikings, the next step in their journey from rebuilding to competitor to contender.

Adrian Peterson knows better. The 30-year-old running back was 25 once, and he remembers his first trip to the playoffs in 2009 and thinking of

chance after chance that would follow it. He has only played three playoff games since that first one and also watched his career careen into the ditch in 2015 when he missed 15 games while addressing child abuse charges.

So no matter what path the franchise appears to be on, no matter how much momentum seems to be building as the new core comes together, Peterson knows moments like Sunday are to be savored.

Playing at an age in which most running backs start to experience a steep decline, Peterson led the NFL in yards rushing with 1,485 and scored 11 touchdowns to help the Vikings (11-5) win their first NFC

North title since 2009 — the only season in which Peterson has won a playoff game.

While Bridgewater has gone through the expected ups and downs of a second-year quarterback, Peterson has been the focal point of the offense.

“I think he’s exceeded expectations,” Zimmer said. “I don’t think we’ve exceeded my expectations. I think we could’ve done better offensively.”

Zimmer wants to see his offense become more balanced and be able to consistently deliver big plays in ways other than handing the ball to Peterson.

The Seahawks held him to eight carries for 18 yards when the two teams met in Minnesota on Dec. 6. The success against the run helped

Seattle blow the Vikings out 38-7, and Peterson knows the running game has to be a bigger part of the game plan on Sunday in what is expected to be frigid temperatures.

“They did a good job of forcing us out of the run,” Peterson said. “We’re going to have to do a great job of being balanced, making sure our run game gets going.”

Peterson did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday to rest a back injury suffered in the victory in Green Bay last weekend, but he vowed to be ready to go for his first playoff game in four years.

“Just sitting back thinking about it, I didn’t imagine it would take this long to be in the postseason (again),” Peterson said. “This means a lot.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Well, this is different for the Green Bay Packers.

The defense is playing better than the offense headed into the playoffs. Coach Mike McCarthy’s team is ranked 15th in total defense and 23rd in total offense after the regular season.

It’s an unexpected scenario for a team led by the offensive-minded McCarthy and two-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“We feel we’re a balanced football team that can play well in all three areas. That’s what we’re focusing on for this week,” McCarthy said Thursday.

Green Bay opens the playoffs as a wild card on the road Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

With Mike Daniels and B.J. Raji anchoring the line, Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews rushing the passer, and a young, but deep and solid secondary, the Packers might have a defense that is well equipped to carry the team for stretches through the playoffs, if needed.

“I think so,” Matthews said.

“This is one of our better defenses. You look in years prior,

While the offense is struggling to string together consistent drives, the defense has held up, for the most part. And they’ve done it with top cornerback Sam Shields sidelined for most of the past three games with a concussion.

“They have safeties turned corners, corners turned safeties,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “Those guys are lined up a little bit everywhere, and they do a great job of disguising their intent with their coverages, so they’ve been good.”

The Spartans (15-1, 2-1 Big Ten) were without Denzel Valentine for a fourth straight game. Valentine participated in pregame warmups and might play at Penn State on Sunday, nearly three weeks after having surgery on his left knee.

The Illini (8-8, 0-3) didn’t have leading-scorer Kendrick Nunn, who the team said stayed in Illinois for the birth of his child.

Maverick Morgan had 15 points and Malcolm Hill scored 10 for Illinois. The Illini made barely more than one-fourth of their shots in the first half and allowed the Spartans to connect on 61 percent of their shots before halftime.

From trinkets to treasure Church sells $22,000 worth of ornaments handmade by African women Swaziland community.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Members of Village Christian Church in Minooka recently made a huge difference for people living desperate lives almost 9,000 miles away.

The church wrapped up a project in December selling 2,200 Christmas ornaments handmade by women in a Swaziland community called Project Canaan.

At $10 an ornament, the result was a $22,000 donation to the African community.

Village Christian’s minister Nate Ferguson said his first trip to Swaziland was in 2014. His sister, VCC member Sarah Windham, and his brother had been several times before, and his niece had lived there.

“The idea was, let’s check this out,” Ferguson said. “It was really eye-opening.”

Project Canaan is a 2,500-acre land development project designed to provide sustainable homes for orphans and vulnerable children and adults in Swaziland. According to the website of its organizer, Heart for Africa, outside help is provid ed through short-term service trips, child sponsorship and large fundraising programs.

Community members receive care, shelter, food, water, clothing, health care and education.

Much of it is earned. The goal is to develop a self-sustaining community by the year 2020 through agriculture, selling eggs, making crafts such as the Christmas ornaments and other projects.

It was the fashioning of the distinctive beaded ornaments that fascinated Ferguson on his visit.

He spent quite a bit of time watching the women make the ornaments at tables in an outdoor gazebo. That was their employment.

“I was really intrigued,” Ferguson said.

Next thing he knew, Ferguson had pledged to sell 2,000 of the ornaments in 2015.

After devoting a sermon to the project, VCC members quickly signed up for boxes of the ornaments.

Selling one box of 26 ornaments would support one child for one month.

In two weeks, all of the boxes were spoken for, and in five weeks, they were all sold. The church ordered an-

other 300 ornaments and sold 200 of those.

“One of our fourth-grade girls went door-to-door in her neighborhood and sold 26,” Ferguson said.

The church has signed on for another 2,000 ornaments for 2016, as did other American churches due to the example VCC, a relatively small church, set.

“They’re already making them as we speak,” Ferguson said of the

“The first time, I was interested in experiencing a different culture,” Windham said. “I wanted to go back and see what they had accomplished – to see the kids and the growth. ... It’s grown significantly. I was really excited to see the impact they’re having.”

Windham said the thing that surprised her most during her recent mission trip was the joy of the people who lived there. They are happy, despite having gone through some extraordinary circumstances, she said, and they were finally at a place where they could have contentment and gratitude.

According to the website, heartforafrica.org, there are an estimated 200,000 orphans in Swaziland.

The country in southern Africa has the highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world, at about 44 percent, and the average life expectancy is 29 years.

VCC children’s minister Amy Pehlke made the trip to Swaziland for the first time last fall. She spent most of her time helping in the project’s orphanage.

“I fully expected to be sad,” Pehlke said, “but those children are so loved and cared for and happy. They have no idea how their little lives started.”

Pehlke said many children are “just thrown away” in parts of the country.

“Moms give birth on the roadside and leave their babies there,” Pehlke said. “The situation there is horrific.”

Project Canaan has 106 children and employs 280 Swaziland adults, Pehlke said. Children are educated, as are adults.

Rape and prostitution is rampant in areas of the country, she said, and both the men and women spend time in classes learning about how to overcome that culture.

Pehlke said the experience affected her in a big way and that she wants to go back.

“We are children of God,” she said.

“We are taught to serve, and we seek out opportunities here and globally.”

Theatre in Joliet, in conjunction with Phoenix Entertainment, is searching for a young male actor to portray the role of “Young Coalhouse” in the National Tour of Ragtime at the Rialto Square Theatre at 3 p.m. Feb. 7.

Young Coalhouse is a young African American boy, ideally around 4 years old and 3’6” tall and 40 pounds. Young Coalhouse should have an “innocent” and “pure” quality about him.

In role, Young Coalhouse will be picked up by and adult cast member, sit on a cast member’s lap and pretend to play piano.

Young Coalhouse will also skip in a circle holding hands other young actors.

Participation in this event is one of the most prestigious honors in high school music in the state.

The students auditioned last fall for the state event during district-level performances.

Depression and heart failure are more common in older patients. A clue that an older person has hyperthyroidism is a racing pulse: a heart rate of 90 beats per minute, even when the person is resting.

It’s not always obvious symptoms such as excess thirst or increased appetite signal something is wrong. People often don’t see a doctor until they experience palpitations or shortness of breath.

Sometimes their family brings them to see the doctor because of personality changes.

Treatment stops the thyroid from overworking. Three different treatment options are available. One option is to use radioactive iodine to destroy part of the thyroid. Another option is to take medication that blocks the thyroid’s ability to produce hormone.

Finally, surgery may be done to remove all or part of the thyroid.

If you are treated with radioactive iodine or surgery, you most likely will need to take thyroid hormone replacement pills for the rest of your life. This will replace the hormone your body is no longer making.

Hyperthyroidism can have serious consequences if left untreated. It increases the risk for the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis. It can lead to heart difficulties, as too much thyroid hormone makes your heart work faster and harder. So it’s a good thing your doctor diagnosed the condition.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks I might have an overactive thyroid. What does that mean? Which of my symptoms did it cause?

Dear Reader: Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, is a condition in which your body makes too much thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones are made by the thyroid gland, which sits just under the skin of the lower front part of your neck.

Thyroid hormones regulate the body’s energy.

When levels of thyroid hormones are unusually high, the body burns energy faster. As a result, many body processes speed up. (I’ve put an illustration comparing normal and hyperthyroid function on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism tend to come on slowly, and they vary from person to person. The typical person with hyperthyroidism endures sleepless nights, excess sweating, weight loss, a voracious appetite and loose bowels.

Other signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism include: • Enlarged thyroid gland • Special trouble dealing with hot weather • Exhaustion • Emotional volatility (often with anxiety and depression) • Nervousness and agitation • Excessive thirst • Racing and irregular heartbeat • Fast pulse • Hand tremors • Muscle weakness • Bulging eyes • Light menstrual periods • Infertility • Generalized itching (with or without hives) Certain symptoms are more common in people older than 65. Indeed, older people often don’t have the agitation and tremors seen in younger people with hyperthy-

Dear Abby: Do you think parents should intervene in arguments between 10-yearolds? My daughter, “Amy,” was playing at a neighbor’s house with two other girls and they had an argument over something stupid.

The neighbor’s daughter, “Kathy,” started to cry, so her mother asked my daughter and the other girl to leave because they had upset Kathy. Afterward, she called and wanted me to punish my daughter for upsetting hers.

I didn’t do it because I think 10-year-olds are old enough to make amends with each other. When Amy explained the situation, I concluded Kathy started to cry because she didn’t get what she wanted. The girls were playing with each other again two days later.
