Lockport City Council hears plans for Highland complex

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Lockport City Council is set to approve preliminary plans for the development of new apartments.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Tim Grogan, Equibase Capital Group LLC managing principal, presented the plans for what will be the Highlands of Lockport. Equibase Capital Group has been working Lockport city officials to make the project a reality for several years.

Grogan touted the quality of the apartments by pointing the 220-unit apartments the company already developed in Algonquin.

“The product we’re building here is exactly like the one in Algonquin … we’re not building a second-rate de-

velopment here. It’s all firstrate,” he said.

The 240-unit complex’s planned location will be west of Interstate 355 between Archer Avenue and 143rd Street.

It will be a 32-acre mixed-use project that includes 12 apartment buildings with 20 units per building and commercial outlets.

Grogan said most of the roads to the apartments will be privately owned and run.

There also will be a free-standing garage structure for parking and valet trash removal service for residents.

He said the project will include historic elements of Lockport – such as limestone entry monument – into the architecture of the buildings.

A traffic impact study was conducted as well as a fiscal and economic impact report.

Grogan said he estimates the traffic volume would be about 80 percent less than that at a big box retail store. The site for the apartments was originally planned for a retail store.

At the next City Council meeting, council members will vote on approving the rezoning, special use and preliminary development plans for the apartment project.

First Ward Alderman Pete Colarelli said the project will create 500 temporary construction jobs and 140 permanent jobs. The project also will bring in a restaurant, gas station, office spaces and a hotel.

City Administrator Ben Benson said city staff visited the apartments in Algonquin and found them of good quality. Benson has said apartment building construction may begin in spring 2015.

Romeoville enters agreement with IDOT for Metra station

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The village has officially entered into an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for the second phase of building a new train station on the corner of 135th Street and New Avenue.

Village trustees approved the agreement at a board meeting Wednesday.

According to the agreement, the village will dedicate $550,000 from its Motor Fuel Tax Fund to the project. But the state will reimburse the village through a $440,000 Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant, covering 80 percent of the cost.

“We’re very excited getting to move forward on this,” Mayor John Noak said, adding that residents have asked him about the status of the project.

The agreement marks the start of the second phase of the Romeoville Metra station project, Noak said. The first phase

of the planning was completed, and the second phase will include the design of the station.

Noak said the station and increased service along the Heritage Corridor line were issues residents should pay attention to in 2015.

Village Administrator Steve Gulden said construction is expected to start in 2016, but it depends on how long the design phase takes.

Wastewater turbocompressors

Trustees also approved a bid to install two sludge aeration turbocompressors for the north wastewater treatment plant.

According to village documents, Genco Industries won the bid at $105,740.

The cost of the purchase and installation of the turbocompressors is $371,840, which Public Works Director Eric Bjork said came unexpectedly high. But the village received a $136,600 grant from the state department of commerce and

economic opportunity grant.

Bjork said using the grant now and paying for more of the cost would result in energy savings in the future.

New park

The village also announced on Wednesday Romeoville will receive a $400,000 Open Space Land Acquisitions and Development grant for the first phase of a new 31-acre park near the intersection of Weber and Airport roads.

The first phase will include a 30-stall parking lot, soccer field, three half-courts for basketball, two sand volleyball courts, two baggo games, a storm water detention area with native plantings and an overlook with interpretive signage. The final site also will include regulation-size soccer fields, baseball fields, a playground, shelter practice fields, walking trails and parking.

Noak said the park would be one of the largest in Romeoville.

LOCAL BRIEF Joliet tax preparer pleads guilty

CHICAGO – A Joliet tax preparer filed hundreds of false tax returns, causing the Internal Revenue Service to lose more than $5.3 million, the U.S. Attorney’s office said Wednesday.

Jeffrey Shelby Jr., 31, of Joliet pleaded guilty to two counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false federal tax returns, the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a news release.

Shelby faces three years of prison and a fine of $250,000 for each count.

He owned Shelby Investment LLC, which had offices in Crest Hill and Joliet, according to the news release.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Shelby admitted to filing hundreds of false returns for clients between 2009 and 2012. Returns were falsified in various ways. A status hearing is set for March 24 to set a sentencing date.

The low was minus 1 degree in the Joliet area during the day, according to the National Weather Service. The cold caused school closings throughout Will County. Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 remained open.

Tamez, a Joliet resident, said he went to work, but his wife stays at home.

“It was more difficult having the kids home from school,” said Tamez, who dropped off mail at the Joliet Post Office at 2000 McDonough St., which set up a temporary warming area.

Warming shelters

Dozens of warming shelters have been set up in Will County to aid the homeless and others who may need warm areas during the freezing temperatures.

“By using these centers and other common-sense practices, our residents can protect themselves and their family from the dangers of these harsh temperatures,” Will County Executive Larry Walsh said.

Morningstar Mission Volunteer Coordinator Jackie Kinney said there has been an increase in people using the shelter at 350 E. Washington St. in Joliet throughout the year, but volunteers were preparing its overnight shelter with more cots in anticipation of more people.

Caution at home

Joliet Director of Public Utilities Jim Eggen said he started to see an upturn in broken water mains as temperatures fell.

“The big thing is that motorists need to be cautious with the water on pavement, which often turns into black ice,” he said, adding that residents who experience frozen pipes in walls should warm them with a directed fan instead of a heat source that may thaw the pipe too quickly.

Joliet Fire Department Lt. Mike Nurcyk said it was important for families to practice their emergency plans. “[Parents] should practice an exit drill with their kids for the basic reason of if you do have a fire, the kids will know where to go and be out before we pull up for the fire,” Nurcyk said.

Don’t forget about pets Joliet Township Animal Control officer Becky Gomez wants to remind pet owners to take extra precautions during this week’s cold snap, offering these tips: Q State law requires outdoor pets have adequate shelter – meaning an enclosed structure that protects the dog or cat from the elements. Consider putting hay or blankets inside for added protection.

Q Periodically check to make sure your pet has adequate food or water. Water freezes quickly in subzero temperatures.

Q Consider bringing your pet inside during the cold snap.

Q Dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Consider putting hay outside on the ground around the shelter or in an area where they do their business, Gomez said.

Q Use a dry cloth to wipe off paws when pets come back inside.

Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools Shawn Walsh said he did not know of any other schools that were open in Will County on

Wednesday. Schools in other areas, however, including Chicago, Burbank, Buffalo Grove, Waukegan and Sugar Grove, were open.

Many schools had decided by late Wednesday afternoon to stay closed Thursday, as well, given the forecast of wind chill factors as low as minus 25 degrees.

Wednesday because of the wind chill, spokeswoman Kristine Schlismann said. Road conditions also were considered, she said.

“We have students that walk to school. We just monitor the weather conditions,” Schlismann said.

Holiday services For Orthodox pastor, Christmas represents a new beginning

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Members of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church gathered Wednesday in Joliet for Christmas, the traditional time Orthodox church members celebrate Christ’s birth.

The aromatic scent of incense hung in the air, and members of the Mita Topalovich Choir sang from above the congregation throughout the service. The morning sun streamed in through stained glass windows lining both sides of the church and congregants stood as the Christmas liturgy unfolded before them.

After the Tuesday night service, the church gathered at the St. George social center, blessing its Yule log, the badnjak, which is actually an oak tree. Congregants took parts of the tree home, Kostur said, burning their branches, bringing Christ’s warmth into their houses.

Holiday aside, this has been a busy time for Kostur, who joined the church Jan. 1. He is taking over as parish pastor from the Rev. Nedeljko “Ned” Lunich, who spent more than 40 years with the church.

“My goal is to serve these people in the same spirit he did for all these years, to keep people in the church and to bring people to the church,” Kostur said.

That task is not without its challenges. The Joliet area was home to a large Serbian population, Kostur said, but many of the original church’s families are entering their third and fourth generations.

Some people have moved, heading toward Chicago.

Those who stayed represent a well-established population of congregants, settled throughout Will County. At the same time, there’s also a population of relatively new Serbians, people who moved to the U.S. during the wars that ravaged the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

“We have to provide for both, to try to gather everyone and to not lose anyone,” Kostur said.

Jack Book has been with St. George for 53 years. In talking with parishioners, Book, the first vice president of the St. George church board, said everyone is upbeat about Kostur’s arrival.

“He’s very energetic,” Book said. “When he does the sermon, you can feel the sermon, with the choir. He just does a great job.”

In reaching out to all parishioners, Kostur said he plans to read from the Gospel in both English and Serbian, to acknowledge everyone’s needs and to make it clear all are welcome. The ultimate goal is to bring people closer to God. “God has blessed us, and we have to live up to it by living an honest and moral life,” Kostur said. “That’s what we all try to do.”

Council referendum pushed back again

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A grassroots citizens group failed to file petitions by the required Monday deadline to place a ballot initiative before voters April 7 that would have called for restructuring Joliet City Council.

But members of the Concerned Citizens of Joliet group say they are now shifting their focus to the 2016 presidential election for a potential referendum. At one time the group was aiming for the April 7 election, but spokesman Abraham Mwaura said members would rather have more than enough signatures moving forward.

“We’re assuming that once we present, it will get challenged, so we want to present

enough that it’s beyond reasonable doubt,” Mwaura said.

A member of the Concerned Citizens of Joliet group came into the city clerk’s office Tuesday with a question about how to bind the petitions, Joliet City Clerk Christa Desiderio said Wednesday.

Desiderio then provided the person with an election calendar, which showed the group missed the Monday deadline to get ballot initiatives on the April 7 ballot and provided a state statute related to petitions.

State’s attorney finds no crime in alleged Evergreen Terrace leak

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The case of an alleged leak over Evergreen Terrace documents remains unsolved, but the Will County State’s Attorney’s office has not found any evidence of a crime.

Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante a year ago announced at a City Council meeting that he had called for a state’s attorney investigation because of information he believed was leaked to the other side in the city’s legal battle over the Evergreen Terrace housing complex.

Giarrante said Wednesday he still does not know who may have leaked a legal strategy distributed on paper during a City Council executive session.

“We more or less hit a brick wall,” he said. “There is no doubt in my mind that there was a leak. But who did it, I don’t know.”

The city received a letter more than two months ago from the state’s attorney’s office saying it did not appear any crime was committed.

noted in an Oct. 30 letter that it can be a misdemeanor crime to hold closed meetings for reasons not allowed by state law.

But, the letter states, the Illinois Open Meetings Act “is silent regarding obligations of confidentiality and/or disclosure by individuals who participate in properly conducted closed sessions. Thus, the unauthorized disclosure of privileged material that is the subject of this letter is not expressly prohibited under the act.”

Tatro also wrote that there was “no evidence of any kind of quid pro quo involving this disclosure that would warrant a criminal charge.”

Tatro described the leak as “troubling” and stated it “raises serious concerns about the city’s ability to discuss any legally privileged matter confidentially in a lawfully closed session.”

She also noted the city’s Code of Ethics allows the council to conduct a hearing into the matter. But Giarrante said he would leave the matter of a

The number of signatures required was a major issue in the group’s first attempt to place the measure on the ballot.

Since no specific Joliet questions were on the ballot during the last gubernatorial election in 2010, the exact number of Jolietans who voted in precincts in Will and Kendall counties could not be determined. Estimates ranged from 2,178 to 2,685.

Concerned Citizens gathered nearly 2,400 signatures last time. But of those, 1,465 were deemed valid. Signatures

were rejected for a number of reasons, including names and addresses not matching county voting records.

JOLIET – Pet owners say their animals were attacked after a neighbor allowed her dogs to run loose.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said three “dog-on-dog” attacks have been reported in the 500 block of North Reed Street since September – the most recent on Christmas Eve. On that afternoon, Sarah Tyrrell heard commotion outside while Harley, her 8-yearold German shepherd/border collie mix, was running on a line in her backyard.

“I saw two dogs running away and Harley all bloody.

I didn’t see anybody outside with the dogs,” Tyrrell said.

Harley had a large puncture on her shoulder and some of her chest was ripped open. Tyrrell called the police and then took Harley to a vet. The dog will recover, but is now scared when she goes outside, according to Tyrrell.

Tyrrell said the dogs that attacked Harley belong to Jaclyn Vavrik, who also resides in the same block. Benton said

Buffy underwent surgery for 12 puncture wounds, but also survived.

“All three dogs came out, but only two attacked, with the rottweiler doing most of the damage,” Heldorfer said. Heldorfer said Vavrik’s boyfriend came out and pulled the dogs back into the house and she called police.

“The dogs have been let out to run loose in the yard, which is not fenced,” Benton said.

Benton said the third attack was in November and the dog survived.

On Friday, a detective spoke with Vavrik, who said she was only aware of the attack on Buffy, but agreed to attend a hearing Jan. 15.

“She said the rottweiler had been given to an out-of-state relative, but would not provide any contact information,” Benton said. “The officer asked her to turn the pit bulls over to animal control until the hearing, but she refused to do so.”

Channahon cop goes above and beyond Chief says officer probably saved kidnap victim’s life

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon police officer John Blough thought he was pulling over a lost motorist just before midnight a few weeks ago.

By the time his shift ended, the driver had been arrested on several domestic abuse charges. His boss, Police Chief Jeff Wold, said Blough probably saved the life of the car’s passenger – a Joliet woman who allegedly had just been thrown off a second-floor balcony and forced into the vehicle to be taken to an unknown location.

“I’m not sure what would have happened to her if officer Blough hadn’t made the traffic stop,” Wold said.

Blough, a fourth-year rookie, this week received a letter

of commendation from his department for the Dec. 22 incident.

“Your actions removed a violent offender from the streets and saved the victim from additional harm,” Wold stated to Blough in the letter. “You more than likely saved the victim’s life.”

It was midnight, almost on the dot, when Blough saw a Dodge Charger headed east on Route 6 near McKinley Woods Road with its high beams on.

The driver had passed a couple of cars and had not dimmed his lights. He also was driving much slower than the speed limit; Blough thought maybe he was lost and looking at road signs.

Once pulled over, the driver was polite and apologized for the high beams. The passenger was facing away from him, but

Blough said she told him they were going to her mother’s house in Ottawa.

That was the John Blough first red flag: going east would be the wrong direction for Ottawa, and children know how to get to their mothers’ homes, he said.

Blough said the driver told him he didn’t have his license.

He gave him a name Blough soon discovered was a fake.

The age the driver gave didn’t ring true either.

The supervising night shift officer, Dustin Carlson, soon pulled up behind Blough’s squad, and Blough told him he suspected something else was going on. When Blough returned to the Charger, the situation became clear.

“At that time, she leaned over to me,” he said of the passenger, “and I saw fresh bruises on her face. I asked her if she was in a fight, and he said

yes. ... I asked him if it was with him, and he gave a nervous laugh and said it wasn’t him.”

About that time, Blough and Carlson were notified by Western Will County Communication Center that it was looking for the same type vehicle in which a female was reported being held captive by an ex-boyfriend.

“We advised WESCOM we had that vehicle,” Blough said.

Minooka Police Sgt. Matt Chinski arrived to assist.

The driver, Derrick D. Williams-Scott, 26, of Joliet, was arrested. Blough said he cursed at the officers and tried to kick out the squad car’s window.

Once Williams-Scott was away from his passenger, Blough said the woman told him Williams-Scott hurt her.

“She was very scared,” Blough said, “and she was in excruciating pain. She couldn’t even lie down. ... Channahon paramedics are top-notch.

They got her safely out of the car, and they did a good job at

calming her down and realizing that helping her was their No. 1 priority.”

Williams-Scott was charged with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, unlawful restraint and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence by Joliet police. Channahon turned him over to Joliet police since the crimes occurred there, Wold said.

Bond was set for Williams-Scott at $500,000. He is next scheduled for a pre-trial hearing at 9 a.m. Jan. 20.

After Monday’s Village Board meeting, where Blough received the commendation, Trustee Missey Schumacher said Blough is a hero for recognizing a dangerous situation.

“He more than likely saved her life if not that night, then some night in the future,” Schumacher said. “I thank John for trusting his instincts because that could have been a routine traffic stop where they were sent on their way.”

Blough said he appreciated receiving the commendation.

CREST HILL – Economic development through infrastructure projects and retail recruitment is the focus for the City of Crest Hill heading into 2015.

During the past year, Crest Hill hit some snags in improving its economic profile for businesses looking for a home.

A major retailer in T.J. Maxx closed its Crest Hill location, opening another location in Romeoville. The Crest Hill Chamber of Commerce started rebuilding last year after internal struggles forced new leadership to start from scratch.

And the city’s community development director resigned.

But Mayor Ray Soliman said several road improvements and other activities are forming the foundation for new business in the city.

“The Weber Road corridor will be a great asset to us for future development,” Soliman said.

The development of the intersection will include a new traffic configuration with additional lanes. The curb, gutter, water main and storm sewer systems will be replaced to accommodate more traffic anticipated in the future.

Drivers should expect construction to take place in the spring and summer this year.

In addition to the major intersection development, Soliman said drivers need to watch for construction on Dearborn and West Theodore streets.

Winter on the Green festivities announced Begins this Sunday THE HERALD–NEWS FRANKFORT – The village of Frankfort will hold its 21st annual “Winter on the Green” starting this weekend.

The festivities will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, and continue for six consecutive Sundays through Feb. 15 in downtown Frankfort at the Village Green, located at White and Kansas streets. Refreshments will be served at each event.

An “Ice Fest” sponsored by the village Sunday will include ice sculpture displays, ice sculpture demonstrations and heated trolley rides through the historic downtown district.

The “Frozen Carnival,” co-sponsored by the Frankfort Park District, on Jan. 18

features music, games and snowman building.

The “Cardboard Iditarod & Winter Games,” co-sponsored by the Frankfort Lions Club, on Jan. 25 provides an opportunity for families to bring their own cardboard sled and compete in an Iditarod race on Breidert Green.

The day also includes ice bowling, snow shoeing and hockey games on the Village Green.

A pre-game “Super Bowl Supreme” event co-sponsored by the Frankfort Historic Business Association will take place Feb. 1. It includes a free tailgate box lunch and outdoor challenges. People are asked to bring a can or two of soup for the Frankfort Township Food Pantry.

Born in Joliet and a life-long area resident. He retired from MetLife after 17 years. He was an active member of the Church of St. Anthony and a former member of the Joliet Chapter of UNICO. Eric F. Prestegaard, age 65, of Minooka, IL, passed peacefully, with his family at his side, Sunday, January 4, 2015.

He was born May 4, 1949, to the late Josephine (nee Maple) and Harold Prestegaard in Sandwich, IL where he was raised and educated, graduating with the class of 1967 from Sandwich High School. He also attended Waubonsee Community College. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served during the Vietnam war and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Beloved husband of 32 years to Maureen (nee Brannick) Prestegaard; loving father of Sharon Kavadas, Erica (Rocky) Garvey, Joseph and Matthew Prestegaard; proud grandpa of Nora and Amelia; dear brother of the late Ed Prestegaard, Pam Rud and Aaron Prestegaard.

Eric retired from Burlington Northern Railroad after over 20 years of dedicated service as a Conductor. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. Democrats plan election vote despite Rauner’s opposition

SPRINGFIELD – The Democrat-controlled General Assembly plans to convene Thursday and vote on whether to hold a special election in two years for state comptroller, potentially handing Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner a loss even before he takes office next week.

House Speaker Michael Madigan on Wednesday threw his support behind a proposal for a 2016 special election to fill the seat of late comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, an idea pitched by outgoing Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

Rauner opposes it and intends to name a four-year replacement immediately after he is sworn in.

Republicans say the move, which could cut Rauner’s appointment in half, is a purely partisan maneuver at a time the two sides have pledged mutual cooperation in addressing the state’s biggest issues. But Democrats deny that, insisting it is intended only to give voters a choice in the matter.

Illinois child agency director calls abuse claims ‘appalling’

CHICAGO – Reported claims of abuse, violence and prostitution at residential treatment centers where some wards of the state are housed are “appalling” and “unacceptable,” but nothing new, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Director Bobbie Gregg told lawmakers Wednesday.

School reveals plan to develop parks in Obama library bid

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago has revealed details

of its plan to build on one of two South Side public parks as part of its bid to bring Barack Obama’s presidential library and museum to the city.

The school wants to obtain either 22 acres in Washington Park or 21 acres in Jackson Park from the Chicago Park District.

The school selected those sites to fulfill a requirement of the Chicago-based Barack Obama Foundation that the facility be located in an area in need of economic revitalization, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

OSHA cites firm after 2 worker deaths in Pekin

PEKIN – A federal agency has filed violations against an Illinois agricultural products company after two workers

died at its Pekin facility.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Wednesday said Springfield-based Agridyne LLC has been placed in its Severe Violator Enforcement Program.

The workers, one age 37 and one age 29, died June 24. The agency says one worker was overcome by hydrogen sulfide gas while cleaning a rail car.

The second worker was overcome while trying to rescue the first worker. Both workers died.

OSHA cited the company with three willful and eight serious safety violations and has proposed $266,000 in fines.

Illinois Tollway patrols for drivers stranded in cold

DOWNERS GROVE – Illinois

Tollway officials say they’ve activated special road patrols to help customers stranded in their cars during dangerously cold weather.

The “Zero Weather Road Patrols” will be mobilized when temperatures or sustained wind chills fall below zero degrees.

They hunt for drivers in disabled vehicles and respond to calls to dispatchers and the state police.

Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur said drivers should stay in their vehicles rather than go for help in frigid weather.

By JAMEY KEATEN and ELAINE GANLEY The Associated Press PARIS – Police hunted for three heavily armed men with possible links to al-Qaida in the military-style, methodical killing of 12 people Wednesday at the office of a satirical newspaper that caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

President Francois Hollande, visiting the scene of France’s deadliest such attack in more than half a century, called the assault on the weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo “an act of exceptional barbarism.”

France raised its terror alert system to the maximum – Attack Alert – and bolstered security with more than 800 extra soldiers to guard media offices, places of worship, transport and other sensitive areas. Fears had been running high in France and elsewhere in Europe that jihadis returning from conflicts in Syria and Iraq would stage attacks at home.

Shouting “Allahu akbar!” as they fired, the men used fluent, unaccented French as they called out the names of specific employees.

Artist Corinne Rey told the French newspaper L’Humanite that she punched in the security code to the Charlie Hebdo offices after she and her young daughter were “brutally threatened” by the gunmen.

Eight journalists, two police officers, a maintenance worker and a visitor were killed, said prosecutor Francois Molins. He said 11 people were wounded – four of them seriously.

GOP takes charge in Congress Divers looking for black but runs into swift veto threat boxes in crashed airliner

By DAVID ESPO The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In a blend of pageantry and politics, Republicans took complete control of Congress for the first time in eight years Tuesday, then ran straight into a White House veto threat against their top-priority legislation to build the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

Republicans condemned the unexpected announcement, which came at the same time they were savoring the fruits of last fall’s elections and speaking brightly about possible bipartisan compromises in the two years ahead.

“I’m really optimistic about what we can accomplish,” said Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, moments after he was recognized as leader of the new Republican majority on one side of the Capitol.

At the other end of the majestic building, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio easily won a

third term as House speaker despite attempts by tea party-backed dissidents to topple him. He said the 114th Congress would begin by passing legislation to “develop more North American energy” among top priorities, adding “We invite the president to support and sign these bipartisan initiatives into law.”

It was an offer the White House could and did refuse – in advance. “If this bill passes Congress, the president wouldn’t sign it,” presidential press secretary Josh Earnest said before Boehner spoke. He said the measure would undermine a review process underway by the administration.

The events spilled out rapidly on a day that offered a glimpse of the political forces at work in an era of divided government – the intraparty struggle among House Republicans, the coordination that GOP leaders in both houses showed in pursuing a conservative agenda and the blocking power of a

Democratic president.

There was well choreographed pageantry as well on a day Republicans installed a 54-46 majority in the Senate and took 246 of the 435 seats in the House, the most in more than 60 years.

Vice President Joe Biden presided over swearing-in ceremonies in the Senate, leading new senators and re-elected veterans alike in an age-old oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” He reserved his warmest greeting for former Vice President and Sen. Walter F. Mondale, 87, who accompanied Minnesota Sen. Al Franken down the chamber’s carpeted center aisle to an oath-taking.

The House played host to a younger crowd as lawmakers were sworn in for two-year terms – children in their best clothes, babies in their parents’ arms. “Mommy, mommy,” yelled out one girl, no longer content to sit in the lap of her congressman-father.

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia – The tail section of the AirAsia passenger jet that crashed late last month is upside down and partially buried in the sea floor, and experts are trying to figure out how to remove the plane’s black boxes from it, an Indonesian official said.

Divers and an unmanned underwater vehicle Wednesday spotted the tail of the plane that crashed into the Java Sea with 162 people on board. It is an important finding because the jet’s black boxes – which should help pinpoint the cause of the crash – are located in that part of the aircraft.

At least six ships with equipment that can detect underwater objects and the plane’s black boxes, back up by nine warships, are working in the area where the tail of was spotted, said Suryadi B. Surpiyadi, a search and rescue operation coordinator from an air force base in Pangkalan Bun, close to the search

area.

Suryadi said the registration number, PK-AXC, and part of the AirAsia logo proved it was the plane. He said two Indonesian military divers showed how the tail plunged into muddy seabed upside down.

“Expert teams from Indonesia and France are now looking for a technique on how to find and lift the black boxes from the plane’s tail in such a position,” Suryadi said.

The tail section was located almost 6 miles from where Flight 8501 lost contact Dec. 28, Tony Fernendes, AirAsia’s chief executive officer, welcomed the news. He tweeted, that if it is the tail section then the cockpit voice and flight data recorders, or black boxes, “should be there.” He said the airline’s priority still is to recover all the bodies “to ease the pain of our families.”

The carrier, meanwhile, said families of those killed would be compensated in accordance with Indonesian laws.

The road to hell also paved with inattention VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez “Like it or not, we must be good to the poor, because if we’re not, we’re going to hell.”

That’s a quote I’ve heard a few times now from Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia.

It is one of my all-time favorites, because one cannot escape it. It prompts an instant examination of conscience: What am I doing to help? What have I done today? And what have I done for the person right in front of me and for the person who is suffering a world away?

What more can I do?

Pope Francis also is this blunt.

Time and again, he turns his attention to the indifference of the world, to the tendency of humans to ignore the suffering of their fellows, even as it goes on right under their proverbial noses.

This is how he put it Christmas Day: “My thoughts turn to all those children today who are killed and ill-treated, be they infants killed in the womb, deprived of that generous love of their parents and then buried in the egoism of a culture that does not love life; be they children displaced due to war and persecution, abused and taken advantage of before our very eyes and our complicit silence. I think also of those infants massacred in bomb attacks, also those where the Son of God was born. Even today, their impotent silence cries out under the sword of so many Herods.”

Writing about his time in Rome helping to elect Pope Francis in an e-book titled “Praying in Rome,” New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan reflected on Chaput’s comment about the road to hell: “[W] hile that’s a rather blunt statement, all of us need to reconnect to this vital lesson.” And about the pope, he said: “Francis is reminding us ... [t]o take care of the poor, to visit the imprisoned, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to welcome the

stranger, to tend to the sick.”

As Edward Norman writes in his 2002 book “Secularisation”: “The church is the body of Christ in the world. This is nearly a literal description for those who locate themselves in the tradition of the historic understanding of Christianity: Christ committed himself to a living company of people, who were for all time to convey his truth. To be Christian is to be integrated with this body, this company.”

This, of course, is counter to a culture that values its independence, even as the talk of “choice” often insists on rejecting the world view described above, one that sees human nature as fallen and God’s love for us a gratuitous gift compelling us to grateful, radical action in surrender to His will.

As Norman writes: “Modern people, including many Christian adherents, are now impatient of doctrine – of personal submission to God – and are only too willing to trade it in for the easier allure of the service of humanity. This attracts the plaudits of modern opinion, is less divisive, is now less socially marginalizing also, and allows the individual freedom to contrive religious and moral ideas designed to express privately held beliefs.”

A Christianity without truth, without right and wrong and clear awareness of sin and evil, reconciliation and redemption, is not for real. It misses the boat.

Which is why the pope talks time and again of the devil. It’s not to terrify the people he shepherds but to wake up the world. Indifference has consequences.

For the Christian, it’s eternal.

The Christian difference of a life lived for others, out of love, brings with it witness to faith, hope and joy. I’m guessing it wasn’t under your tree or in any gadget, but it’s a promise for the new year for anyone serious about resolute renewal.

Quinn leaves as governor with disappointing legacy Only days remain in Gov. Pat Quinn’s tenure as Illinois’ top elected official.

His legacy as governor can be summed up in one word: disappointing.

The Pat Quinn who leaves Springfield when Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner is sworn in Monday is not the same Pat Quinn who entered politics in the early 1980s.

The early Pat Quinn was a political reformer. He fought for the public and increasing its power in government. He fought for smaller government. He became a consumer watchdog. Those traits gave hope that maybe Quinn would do the same as the state’s top leader.

Instead, this Pat Quinn leaves office as a typical Springfield politician, finding jobs for friends and failing to change how things work in state government.

At least he’s not heading to jail, which is an accomplishment for an Illinois governor.

Quinn, as lieutenant governor, assumed the governor position in January 2009 after Rod Blagojevich was impeached. Since taking office, Quinn

has been a poor leader. Too often, he stood on the sidelines and watched.

When the state needed leadership on pension reform, Quinn failed to provide any. When the state needed to examine spending and make hard budget decisions, he raised your taxes by 67 percent – during a lame-duck legislative session, by trading state jobs for “yes” votes. His 2010 Neighborhood Recovery Program, which is under federal investigation, seemingly was nothing more than a political slush fund to help shore up city votes ahead of an election that Quinn won by a slim margin.

Quinn has signed some landmark legislation, including laws abolishing the death penalty, legalizing gay marriage and approving medical marijuana. And he’s always been a staunch supporter of military veterans.

Ultimately, Quinn’s failed policies, poor leadership and Illinois’ still uncertain future will define the Pat Quinn era. It’s too bad Illinois got that Pat Quinn as governor, and not Pat Quinn the reformer.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com For the past three seasons, the Lincoln-Way Central and Lockport boys wrestling teams have squared off in a regional with the winner eventually advancing to the state dual meet finals.

The Porters edged the Knights, 32-29, a year ago in a dual meet, but Central bounced back to win the regional title.

Coach Jason DePolo’s Knights also beat Josh Oster’s Porters in the 2013 regional after Lockport defeated Central the year before.

The squads meet again at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Lockport, but with a different twist. They won’t see each other in a regional since the IHSA sent them in separate meets this year. Tyler Johnson, who is nationally ranked, finally is expected to be back for the Porters.

“It should be a nice dual – but it always is with them, [and] it’s always close,” Oster said. “They just beat Yorkville [Tuesday] night. Last year, they beat us in the regional after we beat them in the dual. We know we’ll have to wrestle well in the regional, but it’s nice to not have two top10 teams in the same regional again.”

The Porters will compete in the Bolingbrook Regional, which includes Plainfield Cen-

tral, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Romeoville, Oswego, Oswego East and Neuqua Valley.

Central will be in its own regional with Joliet Central, Joliet West, Providence, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Andrew, Homewood-Flossmoor and Bloom.

Minooka and Plainfield South will join Bradley-Bourbonnais, Yorkville, Normal Community, Pekin, Moline and United Township at the Rock Island Regional.

For the fourth time in five years, area Class 3A teams will hit the road for the sectional, which is at Normal Community. They will joined there by the Belleville West Regional.

The good news for Lockport is that Johnson is in the lineup for the first time. The senior won his first 51 matches a year ago before losing an overtime tiebreaker in the state final.

Although an offseason injury has kept him from competing so far this season, he’s still the topranked wrestler at 195 pounds, according to the Illinois Matmen’s GEI rankings. The North Carolina State-bound Johnson also is ranked fifth nationally

by Intermat.

When one considers that Lockport graduated the likes of state champ Brian Rossi as well as placewinner Vince Dietz and Dan Radcliffe, Oster is pleased with his team’s showing.

Besides being able to rely on his brother, Shayne, who took third a year ago, the Porters’ coach has received 20 or more wins thus far from Abdullah Assaf, Cameron Roat, Trevell Timmons and Chris Murino.

“Tyler is back on Thursday,” Josh Oster said. “He had 33 pins last year, so that’s a lot of bonus points that we weren’t getting.

Our dual-meet record would be better, and we would have been in the top five in both tournaments, but everyone deals with injuries.

“We’re getting healthy and still waiting on a couple of kids, and Trevell, Abdullah and Chris have stepped up for us. We haven’t wrestled a dual meet with all of our other 13 kids; but everyone has competed, so we’ll be able to move people around. As long as we’re good to go in February, than we’ll be OK.” The Knights also are faring quite well for a squad that graduated state placers Joey Nelson and Bryce Gorman as well as 35-match winners Danny Harris and Ian Meagher.

Central also has the topranked individual in the state at heavyweight, junior Bryan Ditchman, who took sixth place last year. Others Knights with 18 or more victories so far include Vinnie Piunti, Brandon Dominski, Jake Dudeck and Sean Kelly.

Proposal 10 provided food for thought VIEWS Dick Goss How does a football game between Joliet West and Providence sound? How about Joliet West vs. Minooka, or Joliet West vs. Joliet Catholic, for that matter?

I talked with West coach Jason Aubry and JCA coach Dan Sharp concerning the defeat of the IHSA’s Proposal 10, which would have eliminated football conferences and grouped schools into regions by size and geography.

The vote was 395-212 among members schools.

While the margin of defeat was fairly significant, there are good points about a regional approach, such as perhaps increasing the possibility of local matchups.

“At least there were enough votes there [for Proposal 10] to keep the idea alive,” said Sharp, also JCA’s athletic director. “I was very interested and intrigued by the proposal. It is sure to be revisited. But we’re not ready for it yet.”

Modeled after what is done in some other states, Proposal 10 called for each of the eight classes to have eight regions.

The top four teams from each region would qualify for the playoffs, making the 32 playoff qualifiers for each class.

Four regions from each class would be in the North bracket and four in the South bracket. Teams from the same regions would be kept apart as long as possible so you would not face an opponent you saw during the regular season in early playoff rounds.

One issue is the total number of teams that would be in each region. The proposal called for the larger classes to have eight teams in a region.

If that happened, schools still would have to find two other opponents from some other class or region. Following the model of nearby states that have region systems, only the games within the region count for playoff qualification.

It’s an outstanding football conference; but traveling to Mundelein, Woodstock, Niles and the northwest side of Chicago is no picnic for any JCA sports teams.

“The way the proposal was put together, we would travel to Peoria a couple of times,” Sharp said. “Of course, when you think about it, that’s no longer of a trip [time-wise] than a couple we make now in our conference.

Pat Meehan, a Lincoln-Way East graduate and Frankfort native, will be at middle linebacker when Illinois State University plays Saturday for the NCAA Division I FCS national championship against North Dakota State University at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. whose father, Mike, was a tight end at the University of Pittsburgh.

“Last year, we had a lot of skill players ... but this year, we’re tighter and everyone is

real close.”

The Redbirds hope to join the school’s 1969 baseball team, which is the lone ISU squad to capture a national championship. But they know

that it will be a difficult task against a Bison program that is attempting to join Augustana as the only NCAA programs to capture four straight national titles.

Meehan, a 6-1, 225-pound junior middle linebacker, has played in most of the Redbirds’ games during the past three seasons. After red-shirting in 2011 and playing mainly on special teams in 2012, he started in nine games and led ISU in tackles a year ago.

This season, he has started in all 14 games and again leads the Redbirds with 103 tackles, which include 44 solo stops.

He also has 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception, four breakups and a fumble recovery.

He was one of six firstteam All-MFVC selections for ISU this year. He was named national player of the week

by The Sports Network and MFVC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 11 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks against Eastern Illinois, and had a season-high 13 tackles against Southern Illinois.

“It’s definitely exciting, and I can’t tell you the last time that I had this much fun,” said Meehan, who was an all-stater in 2010 for East coach Rob Zvonar. “We want to go there and make history.”

Also on the Redbirds’ title game roster is another Lincoln-Way East graduate and Griffins’ teammate of Meehan, Blake Winkler, who was the team’s starting quarterback last year.

Other team members include Andre Allen, a sophomore linebacker from Bolingbrook; and Tim Wright, a senior offensive lineman from Minooka.

NORMAL – The biggest team accomplishment that Pat Meehan could point to during his football career prior to this season was vying for a conference title or a trip to the playoffs.

But now the Lincoln-Way East graduate and Frankfort native can talk about something very few players ever get to experience – playing for a national championship.

That’s what Meehan and his teammates at Illinois State University will be doing Saturday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, when they meet North Dakota State University at noon for the NCAA Division I FCS national championship.

“It’s awesome to get to the situation where we’re at,” Meehan said. “It’s great to be playing for the national championship and to know that if you win you’re No. 1 and if you lose, you’re No. 2.

“If you want to be the best, then you have to beat the best. We’re happy to be in this game and feel that we match up well with them. We really have nothing to lose if we go out and play our best against them.”

The two Missouri Valley Football Conference squads finished tied with 7-1 records in the league but did not meet.

ISU has set a school record for wins during its 13-1 campaign, while NDSU – the three-time defending national champs – is 14-1.

Illinois State has had to overcome some big obstacles to earn its first title game appearance. After avenging its lone loss to Northern Iowa in Normal, it won, 59-46, at Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals, Then the Redbirds scored 15 straight points to rally for a 21-18 road win over top-seeded New Hampshire. That was ISU’s fifth fourth-quarter comeback win of the season.

“We weren’t really well thought of in the preseason, when we were ranked sixth in the Missouri Valley, but we proved that we deserved to get more respect,” said Meehan,

Trailing 42-41 at halftime, St. Francis (7-11) opened a 6351 lead at the 12:48 mark of the second half. That was the largest lead either team enjoyed.

Ashford (10-5) then launched a 17-2 run to take a 68-65 lead at the 7:12 mark.

Rodgers sits out practice, still expects to start

By GENARO C. ARMAS The Associated Press GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers didn’t practice Wednesday because of a lingering left calf injury. The quarterback left no doubt about his plans for Sunday when the Green Bay Packers host the Dallas Cowboys.

“No, I’m going Sunday,” Rodgers said. “Just a matter of how.”

Missing practice was part of the plan for Rodgers, who has dealt with the injury for about three weeks. While the Packers practiced inside the frigid training facility, Rodgers stayed exclusively in the training room for treatment.

He hopes that occasional acupuncture also will help, along with the valuable rest that the Packers received for

earning a bye for the opening round of the playoffs. It’s possible Rodgers also could wear a wrap to further protect his lower left leg.

There is progress, although “it’s never enough for Aaron,” coach Mike McCarthy said.

“But I think the training staff feels good about it, and we feel confident in the direction we’re going.”

Rodgers at less than 100 percent health is still better than most other quarterbacks. Two weeks ago against Detroit, Rodgers had to be carted to the locker room after aggravating the calf injury.

He limped back in the middle of the third quarter, throwing for one score and tumbling in from 1 yard for another to help lead the Packers to victory and a fourth straight NFC North crown.

Rodgers is such a stickler for preparation that no one in the locker room doubts he can play well without practice.

“We would definitely love to be able to have that preparation, but health is the most important thing for him at this time. You’ve got to trust the system,” receiver Randall Cobb said.

But the injury has limited Rodgers’ mobility the last two weeks, which in turn has affected his trademark ability to extend plays. That mobility has bailed out the Packers in potentially troublesome situations time and again in Rodgers’ seven years as starter.

The rest of the Packers have promised they will help pick up any slack.

In the passing game, that means an offensive line that has been playing well might

need to hold blocks longer to protect Rodgers in what would have otherwise been a scrambling situation.

Receivers who must be prepared in order to earn Rodgers’ trust and targets must be even sharper on the field.

“Just making sure you’re creating more separation and just doing everything you can to make sure you’re running your route as well as possible, make it less (stressful for) him,” rookie wideout Davante Adams said.

Rodgers didn’t roll out much the last two games after getting hurt. The Packers lined him up in shotgun formations much of the time, even on running plays. Rodgers still displayed his typically accurate arm in making quick-strike tosses on slants and other short routes.

By JIM HOEHN The Associated Press MADISON, Wis. – Frank Kaminsky scored 21 points and Josh Gasser added 15 as fourthranked Wisconsin held off stubborn Purdue, 62-55, on Wednesday night.

The Badgers (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) pulled away from a 45-all tie with a 9-2 run to open a 5447 lead on Gasser’s free throw with 3:19 left.

Wisconsin, which has won eight straight since an 80-70 loss at home to Duke in early December, maintained a two-possession lead the rest of the way.

The Badgers offset a 43.6 percent shooting night by making 25 of 31 free throws, including 15 in the final 9:11.

Jon Octeus had 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Purdue (10-6, 2-1). A.J. Hammons and Isaac Hass added 11 points apiece. The Boilermakers were trying to become the first Big Ten opponent to win four games at the Kohl Center.

Kendall Stephens, who entered as Purdue’s leading scorer at 11 points per game, was limited to 12 minutes by foul trouble.

Wisconsin, which made a season-high 12 3-pointers and shot 52.6 percent from the field

in Sunday’s 81-58 rout of Northwestern, struggled with its shooting in the first half. The Badgers went just 9 of 24 for 37.5 percent, including 2 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Receivers didn’t meet expectations this season

This is a part of the series of 2014 positional reviews, going back and analyzing the positives, negatives, key moments and what’s to come at each position for the Bears.

What worked: The best, most consistent player in this group was probably Martellus Bennett, who set a franchise record for catches by a tight end (90) and was second on the team in receiving yards with 916, a career high. What’s amazing is that Bennett could have had even bigger numbers, as a few key plays that resulted in picks or incomplete passes came when the tight end was open.

He worked the seam and the flat well, played through injuries and was a top target for Jay Cutler.

Alshon Jeffery finished with strong numbers, leading the team in receiving yards (1,133) and touchdowns (10), and Brandon Marshall dominated in San Francisco and had a big game in Atlanta.

What didn’t: Expectations were not met all across the wide receiver unit. Jeffery spoiled us in 2013 with his highlight-reel, jump-ball catches down the sideline or in the end zone, and as often as Cutler tried this season, they did not result in completions at nearly the same rate. It would have been asking a lot for him to duplicate those kinds of catches

and the numbers we saw, but the bar was set high after his breakout season.

Marshall played through an ankle injury, part of the reason his numbers were the lowest since his rookie season. He missed the final three games with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. There were more stories about Marshall’s sessions with the media or on Twitter than his game-changing plays.

Marquess Wilson got plenty of attention in training camp, but he was set back with a fractured clavicle and didn’t show much in the final two months to show he is the next big thing in the Bears’ offense. Josh Morgan was mostly a nonfactor at the No. 3 wideout spot, along

with Santonio Holmes during his stint with the Bears. Dante Rosario made some nice catches and was capable as a lead blocker, but No. 2 tight end is still an offseason need.

Arguably the biggest problem with the top two wideouts, considered the best duo in the game heading into the season, was penalties. Brandon Marshall was penalized seven times (two were declined) and Jeffery had an astonishing five false start penalties among his seven flags. Bennett shouldn’t be absolved when discussing flags, either, as he also was penalized seven times (two declined), including two offensive holding penalties.

Moments that mattered: The best highlight from a receiver

had to be Marshall’s one-handed catch in San Francisco. He was playing on a bad ankle, and that was one of three touchdown grabs. Jeffery’s 74-yard catch in Atlanta would be a close second.

Sticking with the theme of our section on Cutler, how about Marshall’s lost fumble in Week One against the Bills? It was his first lost fumble since 2011, came in Bills territory and led to a Buffalo field goal.

Not to take away from Bennett’s sensational season, but his two memorable moments were the almost-touchdown at the end of the first half against the Packers, and the missed block out in front of Matt Forte on a screen pass against Carolina that likely would have led to a touchdown.

Bears GM candidate Ballard comes with college coaching background

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Twenty years ago, Chris Ballard was evaluating talent in Texas, helping recruit players for Texas A&M – Kingsville, a school near the Gulf of Mexico that has produced many NFL players, from John Randle to current Bear Roberto Garza.

For the past 15 years, Ballard has been evaluating NFL talent, and his resume could be good enough to make him the next Bears general manager.

Ballard reportedly was in-

terviewing with George McCaskey, Ted Phillips and Ernie Accorsi on Wednesday. Lake Dawson and Brian Gaine, who interviewed Tuesday, both played in the NFL before joining scouting staffs. Ballard’s coaching background could help set him apart.

Ron Harms, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, hired Ballard in 1994, a few years after failing to land Ballard as a player. Ballard played wide receiver at Wisconsin. Ballard was coaching at a high school in Texas, and the head coach called Harms.

“This particular coach had

sent me another young man that had been on his staff and ended up doing quite well with us,” Harms said Wednesday.

“He said, ‘I’ve got another one that’s a good one.’”

Ballard visited Harms and joined the staff as a graduate assistant before being hired full-time. He coached wide receivers in 1995, the secondary in 1995-99 and was the defensive coordinator in 2000.

“I could see that he had a lot of skill,” Harms said of his first impression of Ballard.

“He was an excellent coach, good recruiter, got along well with everybody, had good peo-

ple skills. That’s how I ended up with him, and I felt very fortunate to have him. “... Chris is a likable guy and everybody liked him. He didn’t ruffle any feathers.

I don’t know anybody that didn’t think well of him.”

As far as Ballard’s eye for spotting talent, Harms said there was no question about that.

“Obviously he had that talent. He could spot that,” Harms said about Ballard’s ability on the recruiting trail and judging talent on the roster. “He was pretty thorough about it. He was always very

energetic about people he was recruiting, and energetic in selling them to us and the rest of the staff.”

Harms, who coached for 33 years at three different programs and won one NAIA title, explained how Ballard’s experience with a coaching staff could give him an edge when it comes to the general manager position.

“I think it’s an advantage,” he said. “It’s kind of like knowing every aspect of your business from the bottom to the top. Obviously, having those kinds of experiences have served him well.”

Joliet college student finds life direction through reality show

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – A Joliet college student has become a celebrity in the world of reality TV. Claire Halbur was one of five to appear on the recent Lifetime series, “The Sisterhood: Becoming Nuns,” which filmed last summer and aired its six episodes in November and December.

Technically a “reality docuseries,” Halbur said, the show followed five young Catholic women from California, Illinois, New Jersey and New York through a six-week period of exploring the vocation of sisterhood.

Halbur had contemplated becoming a nun for several years when she was approached about the possibility of being cast in the show. It was a startling proposal.

“Getting cast to do a TV show was the last thing I expected,” Halbur said, “because I don’t even watch TV. ... The show was very unique in that discernment is a very personal thing for people. It’s not usually done in a manner that’s going to be watched by other people.”

Halbur said the media company contacted her through a Catholic blog for which she used to write.

“They had emailed me months before, looking for Catholic young women for a TV project,” Halbur said.

“I didn’t hear from them again until last spring. They said it was a show that would focus on religious life and discernment on Lifetime network. I didn’t even know what that was.”

Halbur said it was the producer – a lifelong Catholic – who convinced her it would be worthwhile since the show would help promote religious vocations. As a young girl, Halbur wanted to become a nun. Two great-aunts were nuns, and Halbur grew up in a devout Catholic home.

“The saints have always been my heroes,” Halbur said. “They lived for God and for the church.”

Home-schooled through high school, Halbur was active in parish ministry even as a teen. Later, she founded and directed the Joliet-based Cherubim Catholic Children’s Choir, was director of music at St. Mary

A couple of Halbur’s fellow convent explorers in the reality show outright told her that Halbur shouldn’t become a nun before she had known romantic love with a man. One in particular said Halbur couldn’t know what she was forsaking if she never had kissed a boy.

There was drama during the series – as is expected with today’s reality shows, even when they’re filmed in a convent. Mostly, Halbur avoided those moments, even isolating herself in prayer during one biting conversation among the four other women.

“I think they focused more on the dramatic moments,” Halbur said of the series, “but the crying and the conflict, that was not happening every single day. There were a lot of peaceful moments, too. ... We actually did have time without the cameras. ...

The shows were made from hundreds of hours of shooting. They are just snippets.”

Halbur said that at the beginning of the taping, she was aware of the cameras and crew but tried to not let them affect her experiences. St. Mary School hosts Christmas band concert

PLAINFIELD – The St. Mary Immaculate Parish School Cadet and Concert Bands, under the direction of Lacey Freeman, performed their annual Christmas band concert Dec. 4 in the gym before an audience of parents, family, friends and teachers.

The fourth- and fifth-grade Cadet Band presented “Rolling Along,” “Hot Cross Buns,” “A Mozart Melody,” “Jingle Bells” and “Up on a Housetop.” This was the first performance for the fourth-grade musicians.

The sixth- through eighthgrade Concert Band presented “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Sleigh Ride,” “German Dance” and “Drummer’s Christmas Carol.”

At the conclusion of the performance, the students presented Freeman with a bouquet of flowers. Refreshments then were served.

The SMI Band Program is comprised of 59 students in fourth through eighth grades. Student musicians also entertain at other school functions such as Olympic Day, and some members play with the school choir at weekly school Masses.

Today’s column contains a defensive problem. East has to read the deal to find the way to defeat the four-spade contract. West leads high from his doubleton diamond. East takes three tricks in the suit, West discarding the heart two on the third.

What should East do next?

In the bidding, North had an unenviable rebid. He did not want to bid one no-trump without a diamond stopper. He did not want to raise spades with a low tripleton. So he rebid two clubs, despite having only a five-card suit. South’s two-diamond cue-bid was an artificial game-force.

Dear Doctor K: I have something called Morton’s neuroma. Can you explain what it is, and what I can do to relieve the pain?

Dear Reader: A neuroma develops when a nerve is compressed, injured or pinched, causing swelling and pain. A neuroma in the area between the third and fourth toes, or between the second and third toes, is known as a Morton’s neuroma.

(I’ve put an illustration of Morton’s neuroma on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

Morton’s neuroma causes sharp, burning pain and numbness in the toes and foot. You may feel like you’ve stepped on a tiny hot coal and can’t get rid of it.

At the same time, you’ll have the disconcerting experience of not being able to feel your toes.

Sometimes the nerve tissue becomes so thickened you can feel or see a lump.

Women, particularly those who wear tight shoes, are at greatest risk for Morton’s neuroma. The best way to prevent the condition is to wear shoes with wide toe boxes. Tight, pointed shoes squeeze bones, ligaments, muscles and nerves. High heels may worsen the problem by shifting your weight forward. Over time, this combination can cause the nerves to swell and become painful.

Wearing shoes that provide enough room in the toe box is also the first step in treating Morton’s neuroma. For instant relief when pain flares up, try taking your shoes off and rubbing the area. The nerve can get trapped below the ligament, and rubbing can move it back to its natural position.

Your doctor or a footcare specialist may recommend lower heels and metatarsal pads. These pads provide cushioning under your neuroma and

Dear Abby: Recently, a member of the family suggested that my mother Google the name of my sister’s new live-in boyfriend. (Another family member said he had done it months ago.) When Mom did, she saw that he is a convicted sex offender. We were all shocked as he has been very good to my sister and other members of the family.
