Checkers would be part of a redeveloped strip center at 457 E. Cass St. The Checkers plan is scheduled to go Jan. 21 to the Zoning Board of Appeals for approval of zoning variations.

The Florida-based restaurant chain opened a restaurant at 1805 W. Jefferson St. in 2015.

The proposed site is not the first location Checkers picked on the east side, said James Haller, director of community and economic development for Joliet. The restaurant originally was going to be located on Collins Street, just north of Cass Street.

Instead, Checkers is going into the parking lot of a strip center acquired by Aetna Development Corp., the company that built the Family Dollar-Advance Auto Parts strip center across the street. Check-

Aetna is renovating the existing strip center, which includes Mimi’s Liquors and a vacant space formerly occupied by the El Ranchito grocery store. El Ranchito moved to another building next door.

Jose Alcantar, manager at Mimi’s Liquors, said the renovations and addition of Checkers will be good for business.

“It’s going to be better looking. There are going to be more customers to come here to shop,” Alcantar said.

Will County forest district committee OKs $15.2 million preserve restoration project

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com An operations committee with the Forest Preserve District of Will County approved an agreement Wednesday with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, bringing the outfit one step closer to executing a $15.2 million aquatic ecosystem restoration project for the Prairie Bluff Preserve in Lockport Township.

The site has long been a critical habitat for endangered plants and species, such as the Hines emerald dragonfly, among others, said Ralph Schultz, the district’s chief operating officer.

But many of the rare species found in this habitat rely on a stable source of groundwater, which is under the threat of invasive species.

The goal of the project is to restore the land and the nearby

Lockport Prairie, he said.

Rain that falls on Prairie Bluff seeps into the soil, meets with limestone bedrock and flows east, where it pools to provide water critical to preserving the site’s rare dolomite prairie, according to the district. The groundwater plays a key role in recharging the aquifer and supporting several endangered species.

Restoration work, which may begin as early as fall 2016, will include invasive species eradication, turning drain tiles into groundwater recharge areas to preserve more water on site, native plant establishment and control of the eroded area.

Schultz said construction would “take several seasons.” After that, the Forest Preserve District will closely monitor the restoration progress.

“You want to nurture what

you’ve started,” Schultz said.

The project is moving forward after a number of ecological studies, such as groundwater dynamics, population monitoring, plant community quality assessments, and mapping to document conditions and develop a more thorough understanding of biotic and abiotic interactions, according to a district summary of the project.

“These studies have shown that human-based alterations within the groundwater recharge watershed and invasive species in the preserve are having a negative effect on habitat availability and sustainability within the preserve,” the summary stated.

The partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is awaiting approval from the full Forest Preserve District Board of Commissioners. The board next meets Jan. 14.

Checkers is seeking a variance in the parking requirement for the restaurant, which staff supports, said Jim Torri, a planner for the city.

The city is requiring an indoor walk-in area for carryout orders, Torri said.

Lockport enacts plan to enhance city’s appeal

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Looks aren’t everything, but they are important for the city of Lockport as it tries to attract new business.

Lockport city officials have a plan to beautify the community that includes improving the appearance of streets and properties while also installing new signs and monuments.

Mayor Steven Streit said there’s no doubt the beautification plan is part of his overall goal to boost the city’s profile.

As retailers who may be interested in bringing their business to Lockport drive through the city, they take a holistic view, he said.

“If it looks like we don’t care about our town. It doesn’t encourage them to come here,” he said.

The city already has improved one major eyesore of the downtown area by inviting a new owner to take over the Volz building, which was heavily damaged by fire years ago. Now it’s the home of the bar and restaurant Embers Tap House.

Beautifying Lockport

City Administrator Ben Benson said the focus of the beautification plan to improve streets and properties will be the corridor that starts on East Ninth Street and stretches to East 159th Street.

Streit said one rare opportunity for aesthetic improvement for the city is the Illinois Department of Transportation’s 2017 project to improve Routes 171 and 7 in the downtown area.

Because beautification efforts are not part of the state project, the city administration proposed having “streetscape” improvements, such as better sidewalks or brick walkways, in addition to the IDOT work.

The city budgeted $200,000 for streetscape improvements.

Architect: Courthouse design will reflect city’s past and future

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The new Will County Courthouse planned for downtown is being designed to reflect both Joliet’s past and future, an architect told city officials Tuesday.

Jason Dwyer, senior project executive with Wight & Co., made a presentation to the Joliet City Council, which sees the courthouse as an integral part of future downtown development.

Dwyer told the council that the courthouse design uses limestone, a key part of Joliet’s history, while also presenting a modern building for the city’s future.

“This is a great opportunity here to build a building that can continue to be a catalyst for economic development,” Dwyer said. “While we want to be respectful of the past and true to the heritage, we also want to have a forward-looking approach.”

Several county officials attended the meeting that precedes expected votes this month by both the County Board and City Council on an intergovernmental agreement in which Joliet contributes $10 million to the project to ensure

the courthouse stays downtown.

One County Board member called the agreement “the start of a beautiful relationship.”

Dwyer presented artist’s drawings showing a 10-story courthouse gleaming with glass along its horizontal facade while supported by stone on the sides. In front of the courthouse is a mostly glass building that would house the offices for court services.

An outdoor entry area to the buildings along with the use of glass should create a relatively welcoming atmosphere for a courthouse facility, he said.

“We’re trying to make the court experience as comfortable as possible, knowing it’s a high-stress environment,” Dwyer said.

The new courthouse would be built just west of the existing Will County Courthouse on the former First Midwest Bank property.

Councilman John Gerl, who serves as the intergovernmental liaison working with county officials on the project, called the design “an A1 product for our downtown.”

Gerl noted that the City Council is likely to vote Jan. 19 on an intergovernmental agreement in which the city

would contribute $10 million over 20 years to courthouse construction and waive fees for building permits.

Will County expects to pay between $150 million and $160 million for the courthouse.

Will County Board Finance Committee Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, said the County Board also expects to vote this month on the intergovernmental agreement.

Several county officials were at the meeting, including County Board member Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, who said she expects both county and city to approve the intergovernmental agreement, and added, “I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship.”

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk thanked both county officials and council members who have worked on the agreement.

“It’s great to see two elected bodies working together to do this,” O’Dekirk said.

“And, we’re not done yet. We still have to work on Chicago Street.”

The city wants the county to give up a parking lot that now blocks Chicago Street from running directly from downtown to Interstate 80. Opening up the street is seen as key to downtown development.

JOLIET – The Joliet Park District board plans to interview candidates for executive director this month.

The board met Monday in closed session to review about 10 applications for the director’s job, board President Glen Marcum said.

“We probably will start interviewing in the third week of January,” Marcum said Wednesday.

The new executive director is likely to be hired sometime in February, he said.

The board is seeking a new director after Dominic Egizio resigned in October after an investigation into a

complaint made by a female employee. Egizio had been on administrative leave since late August.

Park District Finance Director Matt Pehle has been serving as interim executive director.

Marcum said the applications for the job came from a wide area and beyond Illinois. The Illinois Association of Park Districts conducted the search for a new executive director. Marcum said the association narrowed the applications to those that were reviewed Monday.

Egizio had been executive director since 2004 and was a park district employee for 26 years. His salary was $160,000.

Police: Wilmington men charged in heroin raid, admit to selling 400 hits per week The HERALD–NEWS WILMINGTON – Wilmington police and a Drug Enforcement Administration task force on Wednesday arrested two men who are “possibly the largest suppliers of heroin to the immediate area,” according to a police department news release.

Larry Mikesh, 52, of Wilmington, and Jason D. Gregory, 40, of Wilmington, are each charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

The department has been conducting drug investigations over the past several months, the release stated, and executed a search war-

rant with the DEA just after noon at 30720 S.W. Frontage Road, arresting Mikesh and Gregory.

According to the release, the two admitted to selling more than 400 hits of heroin per week and told law enforcement they travel to Chicago every two or three days to pick up their supply.

During the raid, police recovered 15.9 grams of heroin individually packaged as 52 hits, 5.8 grams of marijuana and items indicative of the sale of narcotics, such as scales and packaging material.

Mikesh and Gregory were transported to the Will County Jail, where they will be held pending a bond hearing.

Child porn bench trial ends, verdict next week JOLIET – A Will County judge is scheduled to decide next week if prosecutors proved a Crest Hill man downloaded child pornography and made it available online to others.

Jones is set to issue her decision in the trial Jan. 15.

Devonte C. Jessup of Joliet pleaded guilty Devonte Wednesday to C. Jessup armed robbery in exchange for a 30-year sentence. Jessup will first be eligible for parole after serving half his sentence and will receive credit for the year-and-

a-half he’s spent in the Will County jail.

“I want to apologize for the crime I committed. My intent was never to hurt anybody.

The gun went off by accident,” Jessup told Judge Daniel Kennedy.

About 11:35 p.m. July 25, 2014, Jessup came into Citgo, 609 Ruby St., wearing a “red hooded sweatshirt with a black bandana over his face and carrying an AK-47 rifle,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Fred Harvey said.

Jessup demanded the clerk put money from the register on the counter, which was taken by his accomplice, Farleigh O. Jones, 21, of Jo-

liet. Jones pleaded guilty to armed robbery in exchange for a 16-year sentence.

Jessup then demanded more money, but when the clerk said he was unable to open the safe, Jessup shot a round into the wall behind the clerk and fled, Harvey said.

Patrol officers reportedly found Jessup near Oakland Avenue and Moran Street, two blocks north of the gas station, and Jones in nearby St. John’s Cemetery with the AK-47 and $200.

The robbery was recorded by surveillance cameras and Jessup made a full confession to police after his arrest, according to court records.

Semi driver cited after rolling over graves at Abraham Lincoln cemetery The HERALD–NEWS ELWOOD – Elwood police have cited a truck driver after authorities say he entered the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and ran an 18-wheel semitrailer over the graves of three veterans.

Disobeying the “No Truck” signs posted at the entrance to the cemetery off Route 53, the driver told police he was traveling Monday afternoon to a warehouse located at the nearby intermodal facility operated by CenterPoint Properties, according to a news release from Elwood initiative Safe Roads Illinois.

Faraz Namdari, 43, of Chicago, the driver rolled the truck over the graves, narrowly missing several headstones, the news release stated. Namdari was stopped by cemetery staff who notified police.

Police issued three citations to Namdari. He was cited with disobeying a 5-ton weight limit sign, operating an over-length truck and spilling debris on the roadway.

“CenterPoint was appalled to learn of the incident at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery,” said Michael Murphy, chief development officer of CenterPoint Properties, in a statement. “While it is fortunate that no one was injured as a result, the driver’s actions were unacceptable and disrespectful, and CenterPoint hopes that all responsible parties are held to account for this unfortunate circumstance.”

Staff is waiting for weather conditions to improve to determine the extent of the damage and whether there is any danger of the burial sites collapsing, according to the news release.

Going farther west, a water main was relined during the summer on Essington Road between Jefferson Street and Glenwood Avenue.

In a nearby residential neighborhood, water main replacements are scheduled this spring for Kungs Way and a section of Douglas Street between Terry Drive and Westnedge Road.

Third Ward Alderman Darren Deskin said there are a dozen properties in Lockport that are abandoned and in need of fixing.

“These abandoned properties haven’t had any maintenance or any upkeep, in some cases, in decades,” he said.

Some properties are in unincorporated areas, and the city may have to either work with Will County or incorporate those areas to make them

more presentable, Streit said.

He said some of them are along Route 171.

The next part of the beautification plan is to set up more signs and monuments in the city. For about $180,000 over the next three budget years, city officials plan to install about 10 new signs as well as flower plantings at Lockport’s main gateways.

The city has a historic gateway sign at the entrance of East Ninth Street, but now officials want them all over the city, Benson said.

City officials also want an LED sign for the shopping center at 159th Street and Interstate 355. Because IDOT owns 159th Street, Benson said, the city is awaiting approval to install it.

JOLIET – A section of Springfield Avenue in Joliet was open again Wednesday morning after being shut down most of Tuesday because of water main breaks.

The first break occurred Tuesday morning and was followed by two more breaks during the course of repairs, Joliet Utilities Director James Eggen said.

Repair crews worked into the night to fix the breaks.

Another section of the

same water main was replaced during the fall. That section runs north of Oneida Street in front of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. The break in the main was south of Oneida in a section of the main that was not replaced.

Springfield Avenue was closed Monday in the block between Oneida Street and Jefferson Street.

Eggen said the main was probably built sometime during the 1960s and eventually will need to be replaced when money is available.

Joseph served for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked for Smurfit-Stone Container Company as a supervisor for over 30 years.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and diehard Chicago Cubs fan. Papa Willie was a wonderful grandfather and took no greater pleasure then spending time with his sweetie pies.

Trooper in Sandra Bland traffic stop indicted, fired

HEMPSTEAD, Texas – A Texas state trooper who arrested Sandra Bland after a contentious traffic stop last summer was fired Wednesday after being charged with perjury for allegedly lying about his confrontation with the black woman who died three days later in jail.

Trooper Brian Encinia claimed in an affidavit that the Naperville, Illinois, woman was “combative and uncooperative” after he pulled her over and ordered her out of her car.

The grand jury identified that affidavit in charging Encinia with perjury, special prosecutor Shawn McDonald said Wednesday night.

Hours after the indictment, the Texas Department of Public Safety said it would “begin termination proceedings” against Encinia, who has been on paid desk duty since Bland was found dead in her cell.

Bland’s arrest and death, which authorities ruled a suicide, provoked national outrage and drew the attention of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Video of the stop shows Encinia drawing his stun gun and telling Bland, “I will light you up!” She can later be heard off-camera screaming that he’s about to break her wrists and complaining that he knocked her head into the ground.

Encinia’s affidavit stated he “removed her from her vehicle to further conduct a safer traffic investigation,” but grand jurors “found that statement to be false,” said McDonald, one of five special prosecutors appointed to investigate.

School safety group offers preliminary suggestions

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois educators should explore sharing private student information

with local officials when facing potential emergencies and train students to speak up about suspicious activities, a group studying school safety has recommended.

A preliminary report the School Security and Standards Task Force sent to legislators last week comes in response to the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut. A final version must be delivered to the State Board of Education by July 1.

Among the suggestions is a proposal to create a school district “threat team,” which could take advantage of emergency exceptions to federal and state student-privacy laws prohibiting sharing personal information with police. A State Board of Education spokesman could not immediately elaborate on the proposal.

The task force also recommends that schools look to federal and industry ideas for retrofitting buildings and review emergency-response protocol that go by monikers such as “ALICE” – Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. The Department of Homeland Security’s “See Something, Say Something” program could help schools develop environments where students aren’t afraid to speak up about comments or actions that unnerve them.

The final version is expected to retain the ideas as recommendations, not requirements, because members found the state’s economic, geographical, and cultural diversity doesn’t lend itself to a one-size-fits-all solution, and some schools have more advanced safety measures in place than others.

Man taking photos of schools shot dead by police

ZION – Lake County authorities said a 38-year-old man wearing a tactical-style vest and carrying a BB gun was killed Wednesday in a police-involved shooting in Zion.

Sheriff’s Detective Christopher Covelli said the man was killed after he led officers on a foot chase.

Authorities said officers re-

sponded early Wednesday to a report that a suspicious person was taking photographs of two local schools. The person, who appeared to be wearing body armor, was located by investigators and a foot pursuit followed. A struggle between the officers and the suspect ensued, resulting in the man being shot.

Covelli said the body armor was found to be a homemade tactical-style vest with metal inserts.

The man’s name was not released, nor were those of the officers involved in the shooting.

Wheaton College professor disputes university accounts

CHICAGO – The professor of a Christian college who asserted Christians and Muslims worship the same God said Wednesday that her views are in line with the college’s mission and disputed university accounts of interactions with administrators who’ve taken steps to fire her.

Larycia Hawkins, who’s Christian, was placed on leave at Wheaton College in December after posting her views on Facebook. She also wore a headscarf to show solidarity with Muslims. College officials said her views were inconsistent with the college’s “doctrinal convictions.”

On Tuesday, they said she refused to participate in further conversations about theological issues and initiated termination-for-cause proceedings.

But during a news conference Wednesday at a downtown Chicago church, Hawkins said she tried to reconcile with university officials.

Hawkins, a political science professor, said she met with administrators several times after the Facebook posting and provided statements explaining her beliefs, which she said don’t contradict the college’s.

Hawkins said she was told further discussions weren’t required, but college officials then changed their requirements and said she’d have to participate in two years of

ongoing conversations during which time her tenure would be revoked. She said university officials advised her to get an attorney, and the next communication was the notice of termination proceedings.

“The rules changing, the goal post keeps moving. And I said, ‘I have dignity, I’ve answered your questions and my statement stands,’” she said Wednesday.

She said nothing about her views contradict the college’s statement of faith, which all instructors sign. Among other things it affirms belief in “one sovereign God,” views on Adam and Eve, and the existence of Satan.

Students, alumni, professors and clergy members from several faiths spoke Wednesday in support of Hawkins.

Ex-Chicago lawyer’s cases studied after judge’s ruling

CHICAGO – Chicago’s law department is examining more than three dozen open cases that were being handled by a former top city attorney who resigned this week after a federal judge accused him of hiding evidence in a fatal police shooting, a department spokesman said Wednesday.

Bill McCaffrey said Jordan Marsh was either the supervisor or lead attorney in 37 police misconduct cases at the time the judge issued his ruling. McCaffrey said the decision to look at the cases was made by the head of the city’s law department, Steve Patton, and that there are no plans to examine closed cases that Marsh worked on since joining the department in late 1997.

In a 72-page opinion Monday, U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang accused Marsh of hiding evidence and lying about it later in his work representing the city in a civil lawsuit brought by relatives of Darius Pinex, a 27-year-old black man shot and killed by police during a 2011 traffic stop in Chicago. Chang tossed out a jury’s findings in April that the shooting was justified and ordered a new trial.

Calif. governor declares gas leak an emergency

LOS ANGELES – California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency Wednesday over a massive natural-gas leak that has been spewing methane and other gases into a Los Angeles neighborhood for months, sickening residents and forcing thousands to evacuate.

In a statement, Brown said he acted based on the requests of people in the community of Porter Ranch and the “prolonged

ground storage facility.

The well, owned by Southern California Gas Co., has been gushing up to 1,200 tons of climate-changing methane daily, along with other gases, since it was first reported in October. It will be months before workers can stem the leak, experts say.

The utility is paying to relocate thousands of households after residents complained of nosebleeds, nausea and other ailments from the fumes.

Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles school board already have declared the crisis an emergency, moving students out of two local schools.

Watchdog warns of scaled-back IRS service

WASHINGTON – The IRS is planning to push you to fire up the computer rather than calling for tax help, but the agency’s in-house watchdog says that could freeze out millions of taxpayers or force them to pay for advice.

As part of a plan that would focus more on online accounts for the 150 million individual taxpayers and 11 million businesses seeking help and information, the IRS may soon dramatically scale back telephone and face-to-face service, National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson said in her annual report to Congress.

Olson said service cutbacks may cause more people pay for tax preparers and software to file their returns.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea’s declaration that it had tested a hydrogen bomb for the first time was greeted with widespread condemnation – but also skepticism – as world powers vowed Wednesday to punish the impoverished and defiant nation with new international sanctions.

The isolated country’s fourth nuclear test since 2006 was a “reckless challenge to international norms of behavior and the authority of the U.N. Security Council,” British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said.

The council met in an emergency session and called the test “a clear violation” of its resolutions. It agreed to start work immediately on a resolution for new sanctions.

The international community must respond with “steadily increasing pressure” and rigorous enforcement of existing measures, U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said.

Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have aimed at reining in the North’s nuclear and missile development, but Pyongyang has ignored them and moved ahead with programs to modernize its ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons.

A successful test would mark a major and unanticipated advance for the North’s still-limited nuclear arsenal and push its scientists and engineers closer to their goal of building a warhead small enough to place on a missile that can reach the U.S. mainland.

But an early analysis by the U.S. government was “not consistent with the claims that the regime has made of a successful hydrogen bomb test,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

The U.S. is still doing the work needed to learn more about the North’s test, he added.

Lawmakers were busy in 2015 stamping out those widgets Maybe the boys in Springfield think they are being paid by the piece. That certainly would explain why they had time to pass more bills in 2015 than they did in each of the previous four years.

All the evidence points to quantity over quality. Illinois passed 237 laws last year after passing 197 in 2014, 221 in 2013, 157 in 2012 and 214 in 2011.

Legislators had time to ponder bobcat hunting, pumpkin pie, powdered alcohol, changes in divorce terminology, gay conversion therapy, police body cameras, carbon monoxide detectors in schools and pets left in hot cars.

They decided pet cruelty was bad, but that it is worse if you beat Fido in front of a child.

When you are busy doing piece

work, there isn’t time for the craftsmanship, or statesmanship, required to tackle substantive works that last. There was no state budget. There was no improvement in the state pension deficit, now topping $110 billion. There was no movement on improving the state’s business climate to stanch the job and resident bleed. There were no fiscal moves to halt the state’s dive toward junk bond status. There was no progress toward paying the state’s $7 billion backlog of bills.

Lawmakers in 2015 needed to craft a finely tuned economic engine that would dig us out of this deep financial hole. Instead, they made us a cheap plastic toy shovel that would have been better outsourced to China.

Genocide must be acknowledged before it can be stopped NEW YORK – A sign with a flower outside a cathedral at what has to be one of Manhattan’s busiest intersections on 34th Street and Second Avenue stands as a subtle reminder of genocide. One wonders how many diplomats on the way to and from the United Nations headquarters, tourists and commuters have passed it this year without noticing the banner for the centennial year of the Armenian genocide outside St. Vartan Cathedral.

2015 marked the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, even as the massacre still goes unacknowledged throughout the world.

As Philadelphia archbishop Charles J. Chaput put it in a speech: “Starting in 1915, Turkish officials deliberately murdered more than 1 million members of Turkey’s Armenian minority. The ethnic and religious cleansing campaign went on into the 1920s. [The victims] were overwhelmingly

Christian. Turkey has never acknowledged the genocide.

It’s one of the worst unrepented crimes in history.”

And there could be other such crimes on the way. By way of a brief tour, Chaput said: “Today we have our own tragedies, from church bombings in Pakistan to the beheadings of Christians in North Africa. More than 70 percent of the world now lives with some form of religious coercion. Tens of thousands of Christians are killed every year for reasons linked to their faith.”

I was heartened to see President Obama issue a statement just before Christmas recognizing “brutal atrocities” being committed against Christians in Iraq and Syria.

“In some areas of the Middle East where church bells have rung for centuries on Christmas Day, this year they will be silent; this silence bears tragic witness to the brutal

In the weeks preceding Christmas, it was reported that the White House soon would issue a statement labeling the slaughter of the Yazidi people in Iraq genocide. While applauding that move, an ecumenical coalition urged that the administration include Middle Eastern Christians in the designation.

As the letter sent to Secretary of State John Kerry signed by pastors, scholars and activists put it: “We have extensive files supporting a finding that ISIS’ treatment of Iraqi and Syrian Christians, as well as Yazidis and other vulnerable minorities, meets this definition. They include evidence of ISIS assassina-

tions of church leaders; mass murders; torture; kidnapping for ransom in the Christian communities of Iraq and Syria; its sexual enslavement and systematic rape of Christian girls and women; its practices of forcible conversions to Islam; its destruction of churches, monasteries, cemeteries and Christian artifacts; and its theft of lands and wealth from Christian clergy and laity alike.”

In testimony before Congress shortly thereafter, Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus, which has an emergency aid campaign supporting church efforts in the region, urged: “The United States is rightly viewed as the world’s leading defender of vulnerable minorities, and it is critically important that the State Department consider the best available evidence before issuing a statement that would exclude Christians. An official government

declaration of genocide is an opportunity to bring America’s religious communities together to pursue the truth, to support victims, and to bear witness to the noble principle of ‘Never Again.’”

The White House could listen to its own ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, Rabbi David Saperstein. He was in Rome in December, where he said that the West “cannot remain silent” about what is happening to Christians, who are in danger of being “wiped out.” President Obama, not for the first time, said something beautiful about religious freedom. Acknowledging the fact of genocide against Christians in the world today would put some teeth to his words.

The classifications do not matter as much as the size differential, however. After losing 6-foot-6 sophomore Matt Hund (Plainfield Central) at the semester break to academic ineligibility, JJC coach Joe Kuhn figured his best chance was to play four guards and make the Trojans win the game from outside.

The Trojans took the bait and ran with it. Triton hit 9 of 19 from 3-point range in opening a 56-43 halftime lead and finished the night 14 of 33 from beyond the arc, a 42 percent clip. The Wolves were 6 of 21 from long range, so they were outscored, 42-18, on 3-pointers.

“That was big, but size was the key factor,” Kuhn said.

“We battled them for a large portion of the game, and I’m proud of the guys for that. We were within 12 points or so for a large portion of the night, but their size and depth were the difference.”

Benet rallies late to surge past JCA

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LISLE – Things were looking pretty encouraging for Joliet Catholic Academy’s girls basketball team after it grabbed a 10-point lead just after the midway mark of the third quarter in Wednesday’s East Suburban Catholic Conference clash at Benet Academy.

But there’s a reason why the Redwings are again one of the state’s best teams, and they demonstrated that during the final 12 minutes to rally for a 69-55 win over the Angels.

Benet (15-2, 2-0), which plays three individuals who started in last year’s Class 4A title game that it won, kept up a tough press throughout against the Angels (8-5, 1-1), who struggled from the field in the final quarter, in which they were

outscored by a 23-6 margin.

“They pressed the whole game; and when we had fresh legs, we were able to get some layups and some run-outs,” Angels coach Nick Leonard said. “But then our girls started to get a little tired; and as I look back, maybe I could have given them a break. But at the time, they were playing so well that I hoped that their momentum would carry them over.

“We made some mistakes, which led to some baskets.

We just couldn’t really adjust.

They were able to slow us down in the backcourt so we couldn’t set up our stuff in the halfcourt.

We had to stretch it out to try to get some deflections and turnovers. But Kathleen (Doyle) is such a great player and she saw it, made a great pass, and they’d finish. When you play a girl like that, you have to play four quarters – and, unfortu-

Things were going well for the Redwings after they built up a 29-22 lead in the second quarter, but JCA closed out the half with a 10-0 run to move in front, 32-29, at the break.

Mia Farrell (10 points, six rebounds) hit four free throws during that stretch while Andriana Acosta (10 points, nine rebounds), Nicole Ekhomu (18 points, four blocks) and Emma Ehrsam all added buckets for

the Angels.

JCA’s lead continued to grow in the third quarter, finally reaching 47-37 with 3:46 left in that period after a 6-0 spurt that featured two baskets from Acosta and a pair of free throws from Ekhomu.

But Benet was able to score nine of the final 11 points in the quarter, with Doyle (15 points) supplying two layups to help the hosts close to within 49-46 with eight minutes left.

Angels only connected on 2 of 13 shots from the floor. Meanwhile, Benet made half of its 16 attempts, with Katie Jaseckas (five rebounds) making four of those buckets and collecting nine of her 15 points in the final quarter.

Benet’s Elise Stout (five rebounds) hit four 3-pointers in the first half and five for the game to help her finish with 20 points. JCA, which hasn’t played at home yet, also got 11 points from Kaitlyn Williams.

“Our schedule has been tough,” Leonard said. “We’d love to play in front of our home fans and then be able to go home in a half-hour. But we’re going to play the schedule that we have; and it’s been a great learning tool, because regionals and sectionals are at neutral sites. If we want to reach our goals, we’re going to be in environments like this.”

“We’ll see how it looks,” he said. “I thought we had a real good offensive first half ourselves, scoring 43 points against them. But their size really took over in the second half.”

Triton’s size includes players who are 6-9, 6-7, 6-6, 6-6, 6-5 and 6-4. Mix in the good guard play and excellent shooters, and it’s little wonder the Trojans destroyed South Suburban by 30-plus points Sunday. South Suburban recently beat JJC by a similar margin.

Guard Eric Gillespie hit 5 of 10 from 3-point range and scored 27 points to lead Triton. Four other Trojans scored in double figures, and three of them combined with Gillespie to finish 13 of 25 on 3s.

Freshman guard Robbie Brooks (Plainfield Central) did what he could to keep the Wolves in the game. He scored 19 points to go with

seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

“Brooks had a tremendous game,” Kuhn said. “He was on the offensive and defensive boards, he broke them down with penetration, and he was out there probably 38 minutes.”

In fact, Brooks played just under 39 of the 40 minutes.

Kiwane Crowder chipped in 15 points for JJC. Pat Kenny added 12 and Jonathan Boatright (Bolingbrook) 10.

Kenny also snared seven rebounds.

Triton took control early behind its hot shooting, grabbing a 21-7 lead with 14:18 left in the first half.

Matching the Trojans’ athleticism as best it could, JJC still was within 72-60 with 12:22 left, but then the floodgates opened. With the Wolves pretty much running on fumes, Triton went on an 18-4 run for a 90-64 lead with 6:57 remaining, and it was over.

“We have to learn from this and move on,” Kuhn said.

The 2016 Lewis University men’s volleyball team started out its season with a win Saturday over No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville.

“We battle hard every day in practice, and the last thing that these guys want is for a ball to drop, so everyone’s going after balls and staying aggressive. It’s rare to see that from a younger team, but these guys are handling it very well and are doing a great job.”

So whom did the Flyers’ coaching staff look to in their opener with UCSB? Three redshirt freshmen and a senior who saw limited playing time a year ago. That’s a testament to the type of program that Friend and company have developed in his 12 seasons at Lewis.

Julian Moses and Michael Simmons took over the outside hitter spots held by Powell and Petty; Jake Walenga assumed the libero spot that Yanez played; and senior Patrick Lil-

ly started at Fitterer’s old opposite position.

Lilly collected 11 kills to give him two more than he had all of last season, and Walenga and Simmons played well in their debuts. But the big story of the match was Moses, who hit .471 with 21 kills and had eight digs and six block assists. That effort helped him to be named Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Offensive Player of the Week. In addition, he was named as National Freshman of the Week by Off the Block.

“I still think we have some mysteries, for sure,” Friend said. “But we also have a lot of good pieces. It will be a different year compared to what you’ve seen in the past couple of years. But it will be a great learning experience as we go through it. We’ve got some great, talented guys that are hungry and want to win.”

ROMEOVILLE – Whenever a men’s volleyball program graduates four All-Americans from a team that just misses out on winning a national championship, it’s a good possibility the next season will fall far short of that success.

That’s just the scenario Lewis University is facing in the upcoming season, but with one notable exception: The Flyers don’t intend for this to be a rebuilding campaign.

Despite the huge losses they suffered after their historic 27-4 season – which ended with a heartbreaking defeat to Loyola in the NCAA finals – the Flyers entered the current year ranked eighth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll.

And Lewis kicked off its season in style Saturday by capturing a 3-1 victory over No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at Neil Carey Arena. Then, a day after losing to the Flyers, the Gauchos bounced back with a four-set win in Chicago over the two-time defending national champion Ramblers in their season opener. Loyola was ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll.

This season’s cupboard is far from bare, even after three-time All-American and first-team pick Geoff Powell and second-team All-Americans Greg Petty, Eric Fitterer and Lucas Yanez left some big shoes to fill for head coach Dan Friend and associate head coach Matt McCarthy.

Off The Block website named senior middle blocker Bobby Walsh as a first-team Preseason All-American and senior setter Scott Fifer to its second team. Walsh also was an AVCA second-team All-American last year after leading the nation in blocks per set. The other returnee from the runner-up squad is junior middle blocker Jacob Schmiegelt.

But although they possess several key pieces of the puzzle with a quality setter and excellent blocking, the Flyers have some question marks concerning their outside hitters, opposite and libero in the wake of

Flyers to a 13.5-7 blocking advantage over UCSB. He now ranks third all-time in blocks at Lewis with 436 and soon will pass Alex Vigansky’s mark of 440 for best in the rally-scoring era.

“We have a lot of new guys this year, so it was nice that we clicked in the beginning of the season,” Walsh said. “I really didn’t expect it. I expected it to be a little rougher, especially in the first game, but we came out on top. We have a bunch of athletes out here, and they played real smart, especially our passing. Hopefully, we can continue to do that all year.

“Our team last year was insane; but, unfortunately, we fell a little short, so this year we have some unfinished business. These new guys were battling against us, and they were the reason that we made it so far, since we had to battle against them every day in practice. I love the energy that this team brings. The guys out on the court are so energetic.”

The Flyers will learn more about themselves in upcoming matches at No. 7 Hawai’i on Sunday and hosting No. 10 Penn State on Jan. 16. Next month, they’ll start the first of home-and-home MIVA matches with No. 3 Loyola, No. 6 Ohio State and No. 14 Ball State. And in March, they’ll head west to play No. 2 UC Irvine and No. 4 Long Beach State.

“We have a lot of new guys in the lineup this year, so we figure it will be a process,” Fifer said. “We’ve been working really hard in the fall season and preseason to bring it together, and our main goal for the first match was to minimize our errors – and for a first match, it was a great job from all of the guys all-around and from everyone who came in off the bench.

Herzog a manager who made a difference The question often is raised: How much difference can a baseball manager make?

The popular response is not much. A team that wins 90 games, or one that loses 90 games, would not have done much better or worse depending on who the manager is.

How often we hear it said the manager can’t swing the bat or catch the ball. The players have to perform.

And yet, there are exceptions. There are the select few who qualify as all-time great managers, those whose teams win perhaps more than the talent level dictates they should.

Among them is Whitey Herzog, who will be the guest speaker for the 67th annual Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County banquet, which is scheduled the night of Jan. 21 at the Clarion Hotel at Larkin Avenue and Interstate 80.

Thanks to the managerial skills he exhibited, especially with the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals, Herzog was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans

His induction was on July 25, 2010. The Cardinals retired his uniform number – 24 – on July 31 that year, and in August 2014 he was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame museum as a member of its inaugural class.

What was so impressive about Herzog’s teams in Kansas City and St. Louis is how they won. They pitched, they played solid defense and they ran the bases with abandon.

They delivered in the clutch.

He valued on-base percentage in his hitters long before that became a statistic everyone wanted to quote. The occasional long ball was nice, but there was no reason to sit around and wait for it. That’s not what “Whiteyball” was all about.

Raspopovich finished with 10 points and five assists. Senior Jens Kennedy (Dwight) scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in his return to action after a two-game absence.

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Rookie Artemi Panarin scored two goals for the second straight night, and the Blackhawks beat Pittsburgh, 3-1, on Wednesday for their second win against the Penguins in two days.

Panarin broke a 1-all tie when he jumped on a loose puck after a faceoff and whipped it over the glove of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury at 8:56 of the third.

Teuvo Teravainen added an empty-net goal as the Hawks earned their season-high fifth straight win in the opener of a four-game homestand.

Panarin also had two goals in the Hawks’ 3-2 victory at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, including the winner in overtime. The Russian winger leads all NHL rookies with 15 goals and 38 points.

Lemont native Scott Darling, filling in for starter Corey Crawford, made 17 saves as the Hawks swept the season series against the Penguins for the second straight year.

Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh, and Fleury finished with 34 stops. The Penguins had won two in a row and four of six before the two losses against the Blackhawks.

Hawks keeping most of the action away from Darling, the teams exchanged screened goals in the first two periods.

Malkin tied it with his 19th goal at 7:33 of the second. With Hawks captain Jonathan Toews in the box for high sticking and Patric Hornqvist making life difficult for Darling in front, Malkin’s big drive from the point went off the inside of the crossbar and into the net.

The Hawks had a chance to go in front again with 5½ minutes left in the second, but Fleury denied Kane in front, and then made a terrific blocker save on a wide-open Trevor van Riemsdyk. Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz shot it wide right on a prime opportunity about 4½ minutes into the second.

NOTES: Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said he had no update on forward Richard Panik, who was acquired in a trade with Toronto on Sunday night.

Panik was in the minors at the time of the deal but is expected to join the Blackhawks once he resolves a visa issue. “It’s not in our hands,” Quenneville said.

Royals sign OF Gordon to $72M 4-year contract The ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. – With a cold wind blowing outside and the warmth of spring training still more than a month away, Alex Gordon walked into the home clubhouse of Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday and grinned.

He was home. And he will be for a while.

The All-Star outfielder signed a $72 million, four-year deal to remain with the Kansas City Royals, the long-downtrodden team that drafted him more than a decade ago, and that he helped climb to the pinnacle of the sport with a World Series triumph this past season.

“When I walked into the locker room, it put a smile on my face,” Gordon said, “because at the end of the season, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do that again.”

Gordon – who had been courted by various teams including the White Sox – will make $12 million this season, $16 million next and $20 million each of the following two years. The deal includes a $23 million mutual option for 2020 with a $4 million buyout. If he is traded, the option would be voided and the $4 million would become an assignment bonus.

Bucs fire Lovie Smith after 2 seasons The ASSOCIATED PRESS TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired coach Lovie Smith on Wednesday night.

Smith went 6-10 this season and 8-24 over two years in charge of the team.

The announcement came as a surprise to many because Smith’s job was not considered to be in danger.

But finishing No. 5 offensively and No. 10 defensively was deceptive. The Bucs struggled to get the ball into the end zone, ranking 20th in points. They were 26th in scoring defense, allowing 24 or more 10 times.

The Bucs gained over 500 yards twice and averaged a team-record 375.9 yards per game. Martin finished second to Adrian Peterson for the NFL rushing title, and Mike Evans had another big year receiving with 74 receptions for 1,206 yards, but only three TDs. Ken Griffey elected to Hall with highest percentage; Piazza in

By RONALD BLUM The Associated Press NEW YORK – Ken Griffey Jr. was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame on Wednesday with the highest voting percentage ever, and Mike Piazza will join him in Cooperstown this summer.

A star slugger of the Steroids Era never tainted by Ken Griffey accusations of drug use, Griffey was on 437 of 440 votes in his first appearance on the Baseball Write r s ’ A s s o c i a - Mike Piazza tion of America ballot. His 99.3 percentage topped the previous mark of 98.84, set when Tom Seaver appeared on 425 of 430 ballots in 1992.

There had been speculation Griffey could become the first unanimous selection.

“I can’t be upset. It’s just an honor to be elected and to have the highest percentage is definitely a shock,” Griffey said on a conference call.

After falling 28 shy last year, Piazza received 365 votes in his fourth time on the ballot and will be inducted along with Griffey on July 24.

“Incredibly special. Wow,” Piazza said on a call with MLB Network.

“I sat here with my mouth on the floor,” he said.

A player needs 75 percent to gain election, and Jeff Bagwell missed by 15 votes and Tim Raines by 23. Trevor Hoffman, on the ballot for the first time, was 34 short.

The vote total dropped by 109 from last year because writers who have not been active for 10 years lost their votes under new rules.

There were significant increases for a pair of stars accused of steroids use. Roger Clemens rose to 45 percent

and Barry Bonds to 44 percent, both up from about 37 percent last year.

Mark McGwire, who admitted using steroids, received 12 percent in his 10th and final ballot appearance.

“They were Hall of Famers before all this stuff started,” Griffey said on MLB Network.

Half of baseball’s top 10 home run hitters are not in the Hall: Bonds (762), Alex Rodriguez (654), Jim Thome (612), Sosa (609) and McGwire (583). Rodriguez, who served a yearlong drug suspension in 2014, remains active. Thome’s first appearance on the ballot will be in 2018.

Curt Schilling rose from 39 percent to 52, Edgar Martinez from 27 percent to 43 and Mike Mussina from 25 percent to 43.

Griffey was known simply as “Junior” by many as a contrast to his father, threetime All-Star outfielder Ken Griffey, who played alongside him in Seattle during 1990 and ’91. The younger Griffey became a 13-time All-Star outfielder and finished with 630 homers, which is sixth on the career list. After reaching the major leagues in 1989, he was selected for 11 consecutive All-Star Games in 1990.

Now, he’s headed to Cooperstown.

“In case you don’t know, I’m really superstitious. I’ve played in the Hall of Fame game three times and I’ve never set foot in the building.

I’ve never even seen the front of it,” Griffey said. “The one time I wanted to go in there, I wanted to be a member.”

Wanting to play closer to his home in Florida, he pushed for a trade to Cincinnati – his father’s old team and the area he grew up in – after the 1999 season. But slowed by injuries, he never reached 100 RBIs again after his first season with the Reds, and he moved on to the White Sox in 2008 before spending his last season-plus with the Mariners.

dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – About two months ago, Chris Book, a member of St. George Circle of Serbian Sisters, spent a day at a warehouse in Gary, Indiana, where volunteers had sorted, labeled and packed a variety of goods, personal care products and clothing into a 40-foot cargo.

Book, of Joliet, said that translated to 427 personal gifts to be delivered to children at 12 orphanages in Serbia.

That cargo was due Thursday, in time for Christmas as set by the Julian calendar (Jan. 7) and when the holiday is celebrated in Serbia, Book said. The warehouse is part of Lifeline Humanitarian Organization, which provides relief for Serbian orphans, young adults with mental illness and adults with disabilities, she said.

“We’re very lucky to have this organization where we can serve our people back home,” said Sophie Anderson of Channahon, president emeritus of the circle, which is part of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Joliet.

“When we take care of people in the homeland, it shows our unity and love for them; we’re united in our faith and our blood.”

Lifeline Humanitarian Organization has a Chicago office, and volunteers from six regional churches – including St. George – helped pack the cargo, Book said. Lifeline is just one ministerial effort of St. George’s circle, which turned 85 this past year, Book said.

“A spirit of giving has always defined our circle,” Book said in an email.

The average age of the 50 members of this extremely active circle – or kolo – is 60, and most are second- and third-generation Serbian Americans, Book said, with

The wise bridge player avoids a minus score by anticipating his problems. In this deal, Justin Hackett from England (West) did just that – and he made the key play smoothly, not with uncertainty and a perspiring brow, which would have given the game away.

How did the play go in three notrump? West led the spade seven: two, 10, queen.

South’s two diamonds was an inverted minor-suit raise, showing at least game-invitational values and denying a four-card major. North’s two-heart rebid indicated a stopper in that suit and warned of weakness in at least one black suit.

South started with six top tricks: one spade (trick one), two hearts, two diamonds and one club. He had to guess diamonds for two more winners.

Then, perhaps East had the club king, or, because the first trick marked West with the spade ace and king, maybe he could be endplayed in spades to lead a club into South’s ace-queen.

Declarer correctly played East for the diamond queen and took his tricks in the suit.

East pitched a heart and a spade, but what did West discard? Anticipating the endplay, he calmly threw the club 10.

Now declarer cashed dummy’s top hearts, then led a spade, hoping to snare West.

However, after taking four spade tricks, Hackett led a heart to his partner’s queen for down one.

You are most likely to find trans fats in commercial baked goods (crackers, cookies, pastries, pies and doughnuts) and frozen pizza. The “nutrition facts” label lists trans fat levels. Do your best to avoid eating foods with trans fats. They are the “baddest” of the bad fats.

But not all processed foods are unhealthy. Some processed foods offer valuable nutrients as well as convenience. Canned beans and fish, for example, are both healthy processed foods. Frozen fruits and vegetables also are valuable. Producers pick and quickly freeze the produce, which retains its nutrients.

To check canned and frozen food for overall nutritional value, read the ingredients list. You want something that has minimal ingredients, most or all of which you recognize.

Processed foods are a relatively new thing. Until about 100 years ago, in the developed nations we ate foods (meats, fruits, vegetables) that were grown and raised locally. Industrial-size agriculture, shipping foods long distances and supermarkets were yet to come. As a result, we ate healthier. But preparing meals took longer, and we spent a bigger fraction of our income on food. So there also are advantages to how we eat today. With a little knowledge and attention, we can preserve these advantages while also eating healthier.

Dear Dr. K: Most nutrition advice starts with “avoid processed foods.”

What exactly are processed foods? Are they all bad for you?

Dear Reader: A processed food is any food that has been changed in some way from its original state. Processing includes canning, cooking, freezing, dehydration or milling.

As you say, nutrition gurus often urge us to spurn processed foods. I spoke with Stacey Nelson, a registered dietitian and manager of clinical nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. She noted most food needs to go through some degree of processing in order to make it edible and digestible.

The main concern with processing is it can reduce a food’s nutritional content.

It also can add unhealthy things you should avoid or limit.

In particular, be wary of the following in processed foods: • Refined grains. Processed foods may contain refined grains, such as white flour and white rice.

Milling whole grains removes the bran (which contains most of the fiber) and the germ (which contains protein, fat, vitamins and minerals). Fortification adds nutrients back after processing, but it might not restore the original nutritional profile.

• Added sugar. Sweeteners, such as table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, are refined carbohydrates.

These are considered unhealthy if they take up too much of your diet. Many processed foods contain added sugar.

• Sodium. Processed foods often contain a lot of added sodium (mostly table salt). At the top of the list are canned soups, breads, frozen foods and processed meats. Eating too much sodium has been linked to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

• Trans fats. Some processed foods contain trans
