By DON BABWIN The Associated Press CHICAGO – With more than a foot of snow on the ground Monday across much of Illinois, temperatures plummeted to record-breaking and dangerous levels, prompting scores of schools to close, causing hundreds of traffic accidents and triggering searches for the homeless to protect them from the life-threatening cold.

Officials said the bitterly cold temperatures on Monday likely caused two trains to hit what are called bumping posts as they pulled into a downtown station, one with enough force to send six people to area hospitals to be treated for minor injuries.

Monique Bond, a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Police, said there were no reports of traffic fatalities, despite hundreds of incidents in which vehicles spun out of control, rolled into ditches or overturned, leaving thousands of motorists stranded for as long as eight hours before they were rescued.

In Chicago, officials said efforts to find homeless people and convince them to go to shelters or warming buses appeared to be working. The Cook County medical examiner’s office said there were no reports of any exposure deaths.

By Monday morning, temperatures at O’Hare International Airport dropped to 16 degrees below zero — two degrees below Chicago’s previous record for the date, set in 1894 and matched in 1988, said Charles Mott, a weather service meteorologist. The wind chill made it feel like it was more than 40 degrees below zero.

In Rockford, temperatures had fallen to 18 degrees below zero.

“This is some of the most extreme weather we’ve seen in Chicago in decades,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said at an afternoon press briefing.

Around the state, the winds, snow and cold added up to conditions treacherous enough that airlines canceled 1,600 flights at O’Hare Monday. Across town at Midway International Airport, airlines canceled some 85 more.

On the roadways, the biggest rescue operation came at the intersection of Interstates 57 and 70 near Effingham in southern Illinois when over the course of about six hours, workers plucked 375 vehicles and six semi-tractor trailers from the snow, with the larger trucks pulled out by a 10-ton Illinois National Guard vehicle.

3 deaths reported as temps plummet Wind-chill warning remains in effect until at least noon Tuesday

By JIM DALKE jdalke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After nearly 8 inches of snow blanketed Joliet over the weekend, temperatures plummeted to some of the most frigid conditions the area has ever seen, resulting in the deaths of three Will County residents.

A 57-year-old man from Bolingbrook, and a 62-yearold man and a 63-year-old man –both from Joliet – died over the weekend, according to Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil.

All three men were taken to the hospital after shoveling snow, O’Neil said.

The Bolingbrook man died Saturday and the two Joliet men died Sunday.

At 10:45 a.m. Monday the temperature hit -15 degrees in Joliet, with a wind chill of 39 degrees below zero, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Jamie Enderlen.

It was 16 degrees below zero at O’Hare Airport on Monday, breaking the previous record cold for Jan. 6 by two degrees.

The below-zero temperatures followed several inches of snow that fell Saturday and Sunday.

About 8 inches fell in Joliet and about 9 inches fell in Morris.

The frigid temperatures resulted in numerous area closures, including the Will County Courthouse, several area libraries, and dozens of local public school districts and private schools. Waste Management postponed garbage pickup in many places, as well.

Many area public and private schools announced they will be closed again on Tuesday, and the Will County offices closed at noon Monday and are set to reopen at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday morning isn’t expected to be much better, as Enderlen predicts the temperature to be about -17 at 6 a.m. with a -40 degree wind chill.

A wind chill warning is in effect until noon Tuesday, and temperatures aren’t expected to climb above freezing until about 3 p.m., Enderlen said.

“It will still be chilly, but it’ll be balmy compared to what we

[had Monday],” she said.

“Definitely limit your time outside,” Enderlen added. “If you do have to go outside, wear multiple layers of loose clothing. Cover all your extremities, head, hands, face and hand.

And find places to stay warm.”

Exposed skin in -40 degree temperatures will begin to develop frostbite in just 10 minutes, Enderlen said.

Will County Emergency Management Director Harold Damron said if you do have to go outside be sure to bundle up and bring an emergency supply kit with you in your car.

“Even a short amount of time outside can be a big shock to your skin,” Damron said.

“Limiting outdoor activity is one of the best things you can do. Minimize the risk to begin with.”

Highways Engineer Bruce Goul said Sunday night the blowing snow caused several motorists to abandon their vehicles.

“Overnight drivers ran into drifts, lost control, and abandoned their vehicles,” Gould said. “We’ve had to work around them this morning as we’ve prepared the roads.”

Gould said the highest amount of drifting snow is in the southeastern part of the county, and motorists should continue to use caution when driving.

All of Interstate 55 from I-355 to Dwight Road and all of Interstate 80 from Harlem Avenue to LaSalle Road, were extremely hazardous Monday, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police Department.

But as of Monday afternoon the traffic accidents in the county have been fairly minor, Will

County Sheriff’s Deputy Ken Kaupas said.

“I’m pleased to say we haven’t seen anything serious,” Kaupas said. “Everyone has just hunkered in. There haven’t been any significant issues.”

Traffic volume was much lower on Monday as people avoided facing the extreme temperatures and icy roads, Morris Police Deputy Chief John Severson said.

Severson said Morris police only responded to a handful of weather-related calls Sunday and Monday.

The Grundy Sheriff’s Department aided in 20 motorists assists and four minor accidents, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

Plainfield subdivision gains momentum

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village of Plainfield trustees continued to define a new developmental plan for the stalled Fairfield Ridge subdivision after approving Monday night major changes.

The amendment changes the previous plan so garages will be built in the front of the subdivision’s houses in a conventional style instead of the back.

The previous plan called for alleys to connect with driveways behind the houses.

“The changes will assist in bringing in and welcoming new families to Plainfield,” Mayor Michael Collins said, noting the location of the subdivision is just blocks away from downtown. “It’s a very good location and it will help out restaurants and businesses downtown.”

The amendment states that the change will use the land more efficiently

and will present a creative approach to the development of the land.

The new developers taking over the project, K. Hovnanian T & C Homes at Illinois LLC, assured the board that the alley outlets of the six built homes between Soldier Drive, Gardner Street and Flanders Lane will be commonly assessed between all 70 lots.

Last month the board approved another major change to the plan for Fairfield Ridge, which is northwest of the Lockport Street and Van Dyke Road intersection. The change enlisted K. Hovnanian as the new developer after it agreed to modify the number of houses from a mixture of 133 single-family homes, duplexes and townhouses, to 70 single-family homes.

Despite enduring about six years of planning, the Fairfield Ridge neighborhood contains only six houses.

City Administrator Brian Murphy said the

subdivision’s development began in 2008, which unfortunately coincided with the national housing economic downturn.

The economy along with difficulty in finding a developer who would bring the plans back to the intended use of the land as a neighborhood for single-family homes led to stunted development of the neighborhood.

The vote for the garage change passed, with only Trustee Dan Rippy abstaining due to a potential conflict of interest with the law firm he works at.

While board members are looking forward to seeing the land developed, they want to make sure it’s done right.

The board also voted in favor of approving a Speedway gas station on the southeast corner of Renwick Road and Route 30 after village planners said conditions brought up during the board’s Dec. 16 planning meeting regarding overnight parking and

outdoor speakers at the gas station were accepted

by Speedway.

At the beginning of the meeting the Plainfield Police Department was commended for winning multiple awards, one being a second place national award for top police department for Plainfield’s size.

Other board actions at Monday night’s meeting: • Adopted new Federal Emergency Management Agency floodplain maps for Kendall County portion of Plainfield • Approved road closures on Des Plaines Street north from Chicago to Lockport for the 2014 Irish Parade on March 16 • Approved purchase of $9,998 for two in-car camera systems for Plainfield Police from Watchguard Digital In-Car Video • Approved payment of $6,900 for Sergeant 2013 Promotional Testing Process for Plainfield Police from Industrial Organizational Solutions, Inc.

Veterans Mobile Medical Unit rescheduled THE HERALD NEWS news@theherald news.com MORRIS – The Veterans Mobile Medical Unit from Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital scheduled visit to Morris has been rescheduled for Monday.

The date for the MMU’s visit had to be rescheduled to next week because of dangerous weather conditions this week. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday the unit will be at the Morris American Legion, 212 W. Wash-

ington St. in Morris. Veterans who wish to receive care through the MMU must bring a copy of their DD Form 214 or their VA medical ID card with them.

Flu shots are available, but you must be enrolled in the VA health care system to receive a flu shot.

In late summer, the hospital unveiled the 38-foot MMU that features two separate exam areas, a counseling room, on-the-spot enrollment and much more.

“Our Veterans MMU

provides us with an opportunity to engage veterans and to assist them with enrollment in VA health care,” Hines Hospital Director Joan Ricard said. “We are thrilled to be able to increase our presence in the community and bring our top-quality health care out to our veterans through the use of this vehicle.”

Hines deploys the Veterans MMU on a regular basis to areas where many veterans are known to reside.

The Veterans MMU will

also serve National Guard and Reserve personnel by engaging National Guard and Reserve units at their service headquarters shortly after they return home from duty.

A master craftsman and handyman, anyone could bring their issues to Chet and he was sure to know how to fix them. Chet adored his granddaughters and always made time to read to them. Warming shelters welcome cold citizens

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Cold gusts passing through downtown Joliet nearly lifted Levianne Smith off her feet.

Smith said she was walking with two heavy bags of personal belongings Monday morning but the weight wasn’t enough to keep her grounded. She was able to take shelter at the Daybreak Center, 611 E. Cass St. Smith said she was grateful for the hot meals and warmth the shelter provided.

“They have good food here and the volunteers are wonderful,” she said.

Warming shelters throughout Joliet have been accepting dozens of people such as Smith sought to escape sub-zero temperatures Monday.

City officials recommended several shelters for people to retreat to such as the Daybreak Center, MorningStar Mission, Louis Joliet shopping mall and the Joliet public libraries.

With the exception of the libraries, all of the shelters were open Monday and will remain open Tuesday.

Catholic Charities in Joliet runs the Daybreak Center. About 117 clients use the center for dining and resting. It also functions as a cold shelter when the temperature drops to 15 degrees or lower, said Courtney Suchor, Daybreak Center director.

About 30 guests from Sunday night still are at the center and there may be more people coming, she said. The center’s staff offers amenities such as a hot breakfast, showers and clean clothes. They also allow the dining room to be used as a sleeping area.

On Monday, as many as 30 people stayed at the MorningStar Mission dropin center, 364 E. Washington St., Joliet. When the doors first opened at 8 a.m., there were 12 people waiting, said Sandi Perzee, MorningStar Mission business manager.

has a capacity of about 150 people and offers a large room with board games, TV, books and vending machines. The shelter also offers free breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week, she said.

People have been grateful they have a place to come and the staff tries to accommodate as much as possible, she said.

“If they want to get off the streets, they have a place to come,” Perzee said.

Stores were given permission to shut down in the afternoon because of the hazardous weather conditions.

“A lot of them are hav-

ing issues with their employees being able to come in,” Erickson said.

The weather has been bitterly cold for Catholic Charities client Martez Nabors, who carpools with his friends to his job at the Home Depot Distribution Center in Joliet. He said the cold air has made it hard for him to breath at times.

“It’s too cold for people to be outside or be homeless,” he said.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Dick’s Towing owner Dick Bartel advised his employees Monday to take precautions as they worked in frigid temperatures responding to motorists whose cars had broken down or gotten stuck in a snowdrift.

“I told them to take breaks to have a cup of coffee and get out of the wind, and not to work without their gloves for more than a minute,” said the Joliet business owner, who has seen his share of cold snaps during his 40 years of business.

Bartel himself was working out of his house after getting snowed in.

He said his company was inundated with service calls Monday, but was doing everything it could to respond to stranded motorists.

Employees at Todd’s Body Shop and Towing in Plainfield also were busy all day, including responding to a motorist that had run into a tree.

“When it gets this cold, the chemicals don’t even work on the roads,” he said. “There is a layer of snow on all the roads.”

“We have a few guys out there trying to deal with the drifting snow,” Trizna said. “It is still pretty windy out.”

Although the snow-

plow drivers were able to stay in their trucks for the most part, other city employees had to deal directly with the elements, such as those responding to water main breaks.

“We do have a fair amount of water main

breaks in the winter,” said Jim Eggen, director of public utilities for the city of Joliet. “We had two on Monday and three on Sunday.”

The city has tried to limit its employees’ exposure to the arctic cold.

“They stay in their vehicles as much as possible,” Eggen said.

His department also spent the day responding to customers whose water pipes had frozen. He said homeowners can help ensure their pipes don’t freeze by letting their faucets trickle.

“If water is flowing, it won’t freeze,” he said.

Morris city clerk’s resignation read

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – City Clerk John Enger’s resignation letter was read to the Morris City Council on Monday, but will not be officially accepted until the next regular meeting Jan. 21.

At the end of the meeting, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick read Enger’s letter to the council. But it was not on the agenda so it could not be voted on. The next council meeting will be on a Tuesday, due to the Monday before being a holiday.

City Council to vote on matter at its next meeting “Personally and publicly, I want thank you for all you’ve done for this community,” Kopczick said to Enger.

Enger, who has worked for the city in multiple roles for 37 years, said in his letter his resignation will be effective at the end of the day Feb. 3. He said it was time for him to retire because of his ongoing health issues. In spring 2013, Enger was out of work for several months because of illness, but returned in

the fall.

Enger first started with the city in 1977 as the city treasurer, a position he held until the spring of 1981 when he was elected as Third Ward alderman.

His first term as alderman ended in 1985 at which time he was re-elected. But after about two years, he resigned to become city clerk in 1987.

“I pride myself on winning 10 straight elections and I worked under five mayors,” Enger said Fri-

day, when he announced his retirement.

After the meeting Monday, Alderman Bill Martin, who is also the Finance and Administration Committee chairman, said Enger was an asset to the city.

“With my job as an alderman and chairman of finance, it was easier because of his abundance of knowledge in regards to the budget and it has been a pleasure to work with him,” Martin said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The winter months’ holiday spirit often doesn’t extend to blood banks, which have seen a drop in donations and are seeking more to satisfy hospitals’ needs.

Heartland Blood Centers, a blood collection organization that supplies blood to 49 hospitals in the Chicago area and northwest Indiana, experienced a shortage of 700 blood units in December, Director of Mobile Operations Jill Moeggenberg said, which could cause a problem this month if people don’t start donat-

ing.

“These are typically difficult months for blood banks around the country,” Moeggenberg said.

“Around the holidays, in December and January, people are on their breaks and aren’t looking to donate.”

Red blood cells are good for 42 days after donation and platelets are good for three to five days.

About 25 percent of Heartland’s blood comes from mobile blood drives at schools. So when schools go on break, the blood supply gets strained.

While the supply takes a hit, Moeggenberg said the demand starts

to pick back up mid-January, when people who have held off on elective surgeries during the holidays start their procedures.

Morris Hospital saw a high demand for blood pick up at the beginning of the year, but aren’t assuming the same will happen this year, lab director Kimberly Wolfer said.

“We definitely need more donors at this time of the year,” Wolfer said.

Wolfer said the hospital uses about 1,400 units in the facility annually, and gets a little over 100 unit donations per month.

While the hospital officials hope more people

donate blood, the shortage of platelets is even greater, Wolfer said.

Platelet donations are obtained through a longer process, but don’t tire out the donor like blood donations do. They are much more valuable because of their short shelf life, needs of the trauma center and to help clot wounds for leukemia patients.

“It’s so important to the operation that we have people coming in to give that time to donate,” Wolfer said. “Heartland supplies blood to so many places. It’s going to help somebody, somewhere down the road.”

New Lenox plans to continue progress

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Tim Baldermann wants to make sure New Lenox residents continue to see their quality of life improve this year.

Baldermann, mayor of New Lenox, said the economic development in the village should come as a relief to area homeowners.

He said village officials expect the construction of a new police station to finish this year, along with more housing and business development.

“New Lenox is really growing,” he said. “… Even through this recession, New Lenox is continuing to [have new housing] in the suburbs of Chicago. We’ve been growing really well.”

It is anticipated that businesses such as T.J. Maxx and Petco will establish new locations in the village this year, Baldermann said. A new IHOP opened in late December and village officials plan on pushing for more commercial development in the future, he said.

Maintaining village services and infrastructure is just as important as bringing in new businesses, he said.

In the past year, village officials have been discussing a master plan that seeks to develop vacant land near the village commons area and redevelop areas along Route 30, Baldermann said.

He said village officials may

approve of the plan this year.

“Aside from continuing to bring in new business, that’s something we’re pushing for in 2014,” Baldermann said.

New Lenox police officers may be working out of a new facility in August.

Baldermann said the new building is being constructed.

Village officials were able to lower construction costs by using a piece of property owned by the New Lenox Community Park

District, he said. They, in turn, would be able to use office space given to them by the village.

Patrons of the New Lenox Public Library can expect some new changes this year.

Kate Hall, the library’s director, said library staff will continue their strategic plan, which started in 2011, to make overall improvements to the library. Each year the staff sets goals to accomplish and this year they will conduct a staff work flow analysis. The analysis will determine if the library has the right staffing at the right time and department to meet the needs of the community efficiently, she said.

Library board members plan to discuss what will be done with the library’s

cafe. Hall said the cafe is no longer in use because the businesses that once occupied it do not find it viable due to the low amount of library traffic. She said board members will see if using the space as a cafe is still a viable option.

This summer library staff plan to open a digital media lab on the second floor that will give residents the option to record sound and video. They will also be allowed to digitize old photos and transfer footage from VHS tapes to CDs or DVDs. “Our mission is to inform, enrich and enlighten,” Hall said. “One of the things a digital lab can do is open up access to information and tools people wouldn’t have access to otherwise.”

2014 will see opening of sports and events center

“We hope to continue the momentum,” Noak said. “We hope it leads to additional investments in the community and new amenities.”

Romeoville saw companies like The Peacock Engineering Company and Valspar expand into the village in 2013. Throughout the year it received industrial permit requests for more than a million

square feet of land, making development and working with private organizations even more important to village officials.

“It’s part of an anchor of redevelopment in the area,” Noak said of the center’s impact on the surrounding area. “The goal is to bring people outside of the community to invest in the [Route 53] corridor.”

Other key areas of development along Route 53 include multiple sites for retail and industrial growth.

Roadway infrastructure, including light fixtures, new sidewalks and landscaping will continue as village officials search for retail to fill in vacant lots across Romeoville.

With Sam’s Club open and the building for a new Sherwin Williams store complete, the village also will be constructing space for a T.J. Maxx, Chipotle, Dunkin Donuts and Goodwill among other shops.

East of the Weber Road and Normantown Road retail district is a development site at Crossroads Parkway, which Noak said will be an industrial area with several hundred thousands of square feet.

Another improvement to the village’s infrastructure is a proposed Metra railway station at New Avenue and 135th Street along the Heritage Corridor track, from Joliet to

Chicago.

Noak is hoping to finalize the station’s plans early this year. The new station means Romeoville travellers can board on the east side of the village instead of traveling to the Lemont or Lockport stations.

An initial 373-space commuter lot at the proposed Metra station will also alleviate traffic at the other stations.

While the Heritage Corridor is limited compared to other nearby lines like the Burlington Northern-Sante Fe route, planners expect new travellers to use the station now and in the future as development increases traffic along the rail line.

Rush on for concealed carry permits Illinois sees 11K concealed carry applications The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – About 4,500 concealed carry permit requests were submitted on the first day that Illinois’ online application system was open to the public, officials said Monday.

The applications submitted Sunday during the

system’s first 24 hours of operation brought the total requests to more than 11,000, said Monique Bond, a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Police. The other 6,500 applications came in recent weeks, as the firearms instructors were allowed by the state to apply for permits early in order to help “beta test” the functionality of the online application system. Detailed information about which parts of the state had submitted the most applications wasn’t

yet available, Bond said.

“Right now we’re pleased with the ease of the process so far,” she said. Bond called the number of applicants a “pretty healthy number.”

In July, Illinois became the last U.S. state to approve legislation allowing residents to carry concealed weapons.

Those who are older than 21 years of age, have a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card, complete a 16-hour training course and pass a back-

ground check can obtain a concealed carry permit for a fee. The five-year permits cost $150 for residents and $300 for nonresidents.

The law bans concealed carry in places such as schools, child-care facilities, courthouses, public transportation, college and professional sports stadiums and in establishments where alcohol sales make up more than 50 percent of the business’s receipts.

Illinois lawmakers have projected that there

would be 350,000 to 400,000 applications for concealed carry permits in the first year of the law.

Currently, applications can only be submitted online. But Bond said that by July, a written application will be available to residents.

“This is the most expeditious and efficient process,” she said of the online system.

Still, it could be months before anyone will be allowed to possess the firearms.

Dangerously cold weather descends on U.S. The ASSOCIATED PRESS MINNEAPOLIS – The coldest, most dangerous blast of polar air in decades gripped the Midwest and pushed toward the East and South on Monday, closing schools and day care centers, grounding flights and forcing people to pull their hoods and scarves tight to protect exposed skin from nearly instant frostbite.

Many across the nation’s midsection went into virtual hibernation, while others ventured out in temperatures that plunged well below zero.

Forecasters said some 187 million people in all could feel the effects of the “polar vortex” by the time it spread across the country on Monday night and Tuesday.

Record lows were possible in the East and South,

with highs in the single digits expected Tuesday in Georgia and Alabama. Below-zero wind chills were forecast up and down the coast, including minus 10 in Atlanta and minus 12 in Baltimore.

“You definitely know when you are not wearing your thermal undergarments,” said Staci Kalthoff, who raises cattle with her husband on a 260-acre farm in Albany, Minn., where the temperature hovered around 24 below zero and winds made it feel like minus 46. “You have to dress really, really warm and come in more often and thaw out everything.”

Even with this nostril-freezing cold, the family still prefers winter over summer.

“You can always put on more layers,” she said.

“When it gets hot, you can only take off so much.”

For a big swath of the Midwest, the subzero cold moved in behind another winter wallop: more than a foot of snow and high winds that made traveling treacherous.

Nearly 3,200 flights – one out of every 10 domestic departures – were canceled Monday morning, following a weekend of travel disruption across the U.S. Airline officials said de-icing fluid was freezing, fuel was pumping sluggishly, and ramp workers were having difficulty loading and unloading luggage.

Authorities in Indiana and Kentucky – where temperatures dropped into the single digits and below, with wind chills in the minus 20s and worse – warned people not to leave their homes at all unless they needed to go someplace safer.

8STATE BRIEFS Northern Ill. man likely died from exposure WATERMAN – Authorities said a 20-year-old northern Illinois man likely died of exposure after he left a New Year’s Eve party following an argument. The DeKalb Daily Chronicle reported Devin G. Blakeley’s body was found Thursday near a frozen creek in rural DeKalb County.

Authorities said Blakeley was last seen leaving a New Year’s Eve party around 2 a.m. Wednesday, but was never reported missing.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said Blakeley was supposed to wait for a ride home from friends, but “wandered away.” His friend thought Blakeley caught a ride with someone else.

His body was found by friends who went looking for him.

Man injured in Nov. 17 tornado has died EAST PEORIA – An elderly man who was injured in a November tornado in the Illinois community of Washington has died.

Tazewell County Coroner James Jeff Baldi said 84-year-old Charles Koonce died Thursday at a nursing home in East Peoria.

The coroner said Koonce’s injuries from the tornado weren’t the primary cause of Koonce’s death and he had been ill before the storm. But the coroner said the tornado that destroyed Koonce’s home left him with broken bones that “definitely compromised his status.”

Utah same-sex marriage gets put on hold The ASSOCIATED PRESS SALT LAKE CITY – Gay couples in Utah were thrust into legal limbo Monday as the U.S. Supreme Court put a halt to same-sex marriages in the state, turning jubilation to doubt just weeks after a judge’s ruling sent people rushing to get married.

The justices did not rule on the merits of the case or on same-sex marriage bans in general, leaving both sides confident they’ll ultimately win. The decision stays in effect while the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals considers the long-term question of whether gay couples have a right to wed in Utah.

For those couples who just got married – or were planning their nuptials – the latest twist in the legal battle clouds what was seen as a cause for celebration.

“It feels like we are sec-

ond-class citizens during the stay,” said Moudi Sbeity, who is waiting to get married until the legal process plays out.

“There’s also the fear of the unknown of what might come next.”

Sbeity and partner Derek Kitchen are one of the three couples who brought the Utah lawsuit that led to the surprise Dec. 20 ruling by U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby, who said the state’s ban on same-sex marriage violated gay and lesbian couples’ constitutional rights.

State officials praised Monday’s decision to put a hold on things, saying it should have come earlier to avoid uncertainty.

“Clearly, the stay should have been granted with the original District Court decision in order to have avoided the uncertainty created by this unprecedented change,” Gov. Gary Herbert said.

passed on weighing on the constitutionality of defining marriage as being between a man and woman, relying instead on a technical legal argument to resolve the California case and clear the way for same-sex marriage in the state.

Douglas NeJaime, a professor of law at the University of California, Irvine, said the court’s decision to halt gay marriages doesn’t necessarily give any indication of how the justices would rule on the issue.

Meanwhile, the state is trying to determine whether the marriages that already have taken place still are valid.

“This is precisely the uncertainty we were hoping to avoid by requesting the stay,” Reyes said.

Marriage licenses issued in 2008 in California prior to the passage of the state’s same-sex marriage ban were eventually upheld by the state supreme court.

U.S. marks four straight years of slowing health costs

By RICARDO ALONSO–ZALDIVAR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Even as his health care law divided the nation, President Barack Obama’s first term produced historically low growth in health costs, government experts said in a new report Monday.

For the second year in a row, the U.S. economy grew faster in 2012

than did national health care spending, according to nonpartisan economic experts at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In most years, health care spending grows more rapidly than the economy.

That cost pressure steadily undermines employer insurance as well as government programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

But the pattern slowed

starting in 2009, and then appears to have reversed ever so slightly and tenuously.

“Have we turned the corner in a sustainable way? That’s still an open question,” said economist Robert Reischauer, who serves as a public trustee overseeing Medicare and Social Security financing.

“But I am more optimistic than I have ever been that fundamental changes are

under way.”

Monday’s report found the nation’s health care tab reached $2.8 trillion in 2012, the latest year available. Health care accounted for 17.2 percent of the economy, down from 17.3 percent in 2011.

Total spending averaged $8,915 for every man, woman and child, well above the level in other advanced economies. But more spending doesn’t

equate to better health.

By many health measures, other countries are ahead.

Also, the per-capita dollar amount doesn’t tell the full story. In any given year, most of the spending goes for the sickest patients, a small fraction of the population.

The report said Obama’s health care law had only had a “minimal impact” on overall spending. It contributed less

than 0.1 percent to rising costs from 2010-2012, the authors said. That will change this year when the law’s big coverage expansion for the uninsured is expected to increase U.S. health spending by about 6 percent.

Whether that starts a return to the old pattern of faster growth remains to be seen. The White House does not believe that will happen.

Unemployment bill first up in U.S. Senate

By DAVID ESPO The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Senate plunged into an election-year session Monday that promises to be long on political maneuvering and less so on accomplishment, beginning with a struggle over legislation to renew lapsed jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.

“I’m optimistic, cautiously optimistic, that the new year will bring a renewed spirit of cooperation to this chamber,” said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in the first remarks of the year on the Senate floor.

Within moments, he pivoted, accusing Republicans of “never ending obstruction” to President Barack Obama’s proposals over the past five years.

a man who pleaded guilty to slapping a crying toddler on an Atlanta-bound flight to serve eight months in federal prison.

Joe Rickey Hundley was accused of using a racial slur to refer to the 19-month-old boy, who’s black, and hitting him under the eye as the flight from Minneapolis descended to the Atlanta airport last February. He pleaded guilty in October to simple assault after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Prosecutors recommended a sentence of six months in prison. U.S. Magistrate Judge Alan Baverman imposed a higher sentence

more in the coming weeks as their initial 28 weeks’ worth of unemployment benefits expire.

The bill is the first on the Senate’s agenda for the year and part of a heaping portion of leftovers from 2013.

House and Senate lawmakers are negotiating privately over legislation to keep the government operating normally when current funding expires Jan. 15. Agreement is expected quickly, since the two sides and the White House reached agreement on an overall spending cap before adjourning for the holidays.

A separate set of talks is on legislation to replace expired farm and feeding programs. And just ahead is a requirement to raise the nation’s debt limit.

The House is scheduled to return from its year-end break Tuesday,

and already, majority Republicans have served notice they will continue to challenge Democrats over the health care program known as “Obamacare.”

In a memo to the rank and file last week, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said there would be a vote quickly on legislation requiring “prompt notification in the event of a breach involving personal information.”

The health care law is expected to be a central issue in next fall’s election with control of the House and Senate at stake, and Democrats were on the defensive at the end of last year when a major expansion of the program had a debut that was widely panned by lawmakers in both parties and by Obama himself.

The political stakes were immediately on display as lawmakers headed

back to the Capitol.

The Senate Democrats’ campaign organization issued a statement predicting, “nearly every Republican Senate candidate in the country will align themselves with the tea party to block the renewal of longterm unemployment benefits, and American families have only begun to feel the painful consequences.”

House Republicans focused their energy elsewhere.

They unveiled a mock “Obamacare” campaign pledge and challenged Democratic lawmakers to sign it.

“The law may be incredibly unpopular as people in my district are kicked off health care and watch as their premiums and costs skyrocket, but I still support this law – and commit that I will continue to support it through Election Day,” it says.

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Working women in Grundy County have a new way to network thanks to a Women in Business Group recently established by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce.

“We had gotten some feedback from some members who thought it would be nice if women in business had a way to connect with one another,” said Caroline Portlock, executive director of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce. “So we just thought, ‘Let’s start a group.’ ” On Jan. 17, Women in Business will hold its first luncheon at the Morris Country Club, where those interested in joining can meet, learn more and help shape the future of the group.

“What we’ve decided is you don’t have to be a chamber member to participate,” Portlock said.

“Once we get to a point where it’s a formalized group ... non-chamber members may pay on a slightly different scale, but because it is so focused we want to make sure people have the opportunity to get involved.”

Ann Olszta of Heartland Community Bank in Minooka was an integral person in founding the group, Portlock said.

“I was chair of the Women in Business group in Bolingbrook,” Olszta said.

“I liked the support from other women, the sharing of ideas and the mentoring, so I wanted to start that in Grundy.”

The luncheon will include a speaker who will help give the group ideas and get the women excited to join.

“It’s open to women who aren’t chamber members, so maybe moms

trying to get back into the workplace or maybe stay-at-home moms selling Mary Kay and Avon,” Olszta said.

Olszta said the new group hopes to host business seminars, networking events, mentoring programs, social outings and more.

“We want members to gain personal and strategic business relationships, support other women in the workplace and foster growth,” Olszta said.

“It can be empowering to have women supporting women.”

Portlock said the chamber has wanted to create a women’s group for years and is happy to finally launch the organization at the luncheon.

“The goal of the luncheon is to motivate the group of women who are there to talk about the logistics of it – what do we want to see happen, how often do we want to meet, where do we want to meet,” Portlock said.

County receives $50,000 donation Officials from Waste Management of Illinois presented a $50,000 check to fund the newly created Lee Addleman/Will County Veterans’ Employment Advocacy Project.

The program is designed to help veterans obtain employment through employer-based internships and will be managed through the Workforce Services Division of Will County.

Waste Management of Illinois will also donate $50,000 for the next two years of this program. The program bears the name of Lee Addleman, a longtime advocate for Waste Management and Will County.

The new program will have an initial pilot of three years and will be re-evaluated and restructured as needed.

Will County home sales on the rise

By CINDY WOJDYLA CAIN The Herald-News correspondent Five years after the U.S. housing market collapsed, home sales and values in the Will County area finally seem to be rebounding.

“It is just a much more vigorous marketplace,” said David McClintock, CEO of the Joliet-based Three Rivers Association of Realtors.

McClintock said his association’s members are much busier than they have been in recent years.

“If something comes on the market and it’s priced right, there’s a lot of activity,” he said. “Good property priced competitively is going to move and have a lot of offers.”

Will County home sales increased 18.2 percent from 6,932 to 8,194 for the first 11 months of the year compared to the same time period last year.

The median sales price rose 10.2 percent, from $157,000 in November 2012 to $173,000 last month.

Statistics for both Grundy and Kendall counties showed similar positive trends. Grundy County home sales increased 24.9 percent year to date and the median sales price was up 5.6 percent from $141,700 to $149,700.

Kendall County home sales increased 22 percent during the first 11 months of 2013 and the median sales price was up 6.5 percent from $155,000 to $165,000.

Housing inventory and the number of days that homes are sitting on the market also dropped in all three counties.

Appraisal values are still lagging in some cases and financing can be tough to get for some buyers. But McClintock said he would take those issues over the former housing market catastrophe any day.

“They’re good problems,” he said.

Real estate agent and association President Karen Robertson agreed with McClintock’s optimistic outlook.

“It’s crazy busy,” said Robertson, who has been a real estate agent for 11 years. “It’s been my best year in real estate, personally, and I’m looking forward to a really vibrant spring.”

Robertson said homeowners who think they are “underwater” on their home value and owe more than it’s worth should have someone assess their property value now. It’s possible the value has gone up enough to allow them to move, she said.

So many people were stuck in their homes because prices had plummeted, but that may no longer be the case, she explained.

Also, enough time has passed that some property owners who sold their

homes through short sales for the amount owed can get back in the market now if their credit is repaired, she added.

“We call them boomerang buyers,” she said.

Short sale buyers aren’t the only ones coming back – so are real estate agents.

The association saw its membership peak at 1,800 when Will County was flying high as one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. Membership dropped to about 900 members when the market hit rock bottom. Now it’s back up to 958, Robertson reported.

“We’re seeing people come back to the business as a profession,” she said.

New construction also seems to be coming back to the county. Robertson said some of the builders are returning to the area after leaving during the downturn.

And even though appraisals are lagging and financing can be tricky for some buyers, Robertson said interest rates remain low and there are a lot of good deals out there.

Overall, the real estate roller coaster seems to finally be heading up, more slowly than during its heyday, but more consistently than in the past several years.

“We’re back,” Robertson said.

Must rein in the NSA

President Barack Obama has a clearly defined mission in 2014: Protect Americans from the wretched excesses of the National Security Agency.

The NSA ostensibly was created to keep U.S. citizens from harm. Recently, a panel of security and surveillance experts made it clear Americans must be shielded from unchecked invasions of privacy by the NSA. The Affordable Care Act was cursed with all manner of computer glitches, but the machinery to eavesdrop on millions of Americans hums along without credible judicial scrutiny or congressional oversight.

No one is paying attention as the NSA vacuums up stunning amounts of telephone and online data every 90 days and stores it for five years, The New York Times reported. How the information is used and who has access to it is not well understood. Tensions are even surfacing with foreign allies who have varying security links.

The phone companies, and other data sources, turn over the information on the broadest of directions from the NSA’s lap-dog surveillance court. Is anyone acting on the basis of probable cause or some level of suspicion? No. The panel of experts briefed Obama. One can hope he will address the concerns of a former national security adviser in Democrat and Republican administrations, privacy and constitutional specialists and a former deputy director of the CIA. The panel recommends more than 40 changes, including a separation of leadership roles between civilian and military cyber authorities. The president already has turned that down.

The trauma of 9/11 prepared Americans to accept some new, intensive level of security surveillance in dangerous times. The nation naively expected the newly created Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to scrutinize government requests to monitor telephone and online traffic.

Apparently the FISA court plays an essentially rigged and weighted role that only serves the government.

Obama must protect the country from internal security abuses. Congress has legislative powers of executive oversight and the budget. Use both to rein in the NSA. The NSA has a mission, but the agency cannot be allowed to ignore basic rights and freedoms.

Bundle up a little longer; check on pets Weather events sometimes are over-hyped, but the extreme cold that has gripped our area has lived up to the billing.

Although the absolute worst of the weather emergency might have passed, it is not over. Today’s high temperature is expected to be in the low single digits, and wind chills this morning will remain in the 30 to 35-below-zero range, with a wind chill advisory in effect through noon today.

The threats to safety for motorists and others will continue, as well, with black ice, drifting snow and slick patches of packed snow making driving hazardous, including on Interstates – especially those in rural areas.

Gov. Pat Quinn has issued a disaster declaration covering the entire state, and state transportation officials have advised avoiding nonessential travel. With many schools and other local governments and even businesses closed, that should be easier to do.

People who must travel should let someone know where they are going, the route they plan to take and their schedule for the day, so people know where they will be and can find them. Information about state conditions is also available online at GettingAroundIllinois.com.

It’s also advisable to make sure your car has plenty of gas, leave dressed for the weather and that you have a good pair of boots either

on your feet or in your car.

Extreme weather conditions of all kinds means that we have to look after not only ourselves, but also our neighbors. Check on people if you think they might be struggling and help those you can safely help.

Animals are susceptible to the cold, as well. Just because your dog or cat has a fur coat, doesn’t mean they won’t suffer. Please allow your pet indoors most of the day to prevent them from freezing.

Soon enough, we will emerge from the “polar vortex” that has enveloped our area. Until then, stay safe, look out for pets and neighbors and remember it will be but a few short months before the spring.

Sophomore standout Jackson powers offense

OLIET – The future looks bright for Joliet Catholic guard Jalen Jackson.

In his second year on the varsity team, the sharpshooting sophomore is in the midst of a breakout season, leading the Hilltoppers offense 16 points a game.

Additionally, he’s played his best basketball when his team has needed him the most.

Jackson recorded 23 points, going 6 of 8 from behind the arc, during a narrow defeat to Lincoln-Way West on Dec. 26 at the Romeoville Christmas Classic. He followed it up with 18 points during a double double-overtime victory over Romeoville on Dec. 27 and 14 points against Argo on Dec. 30.

His play has helped the team climb out of a hole in the East Suburban Catholic standings.

After a slow start to the season, the Hilltoppers have won six of their past nine games to climb to a 6-9 overall record.

For the 15-year-old Jackson – a Crest Hill resident who also played AAU basketball for the Illinois Gold Rush Wildcats – the stellar sophomore campaign is not only validation that he can compete with the area’s top talent, but

It was that team-first leadership quality that caught the eye of Joliet Catholic coach Joe Gura.

Jackson is at the forefront of the Hilltoppers’ basketball youth movement after the team saw a core of seniors graduate from last season’s team.

Including Jackson, Joliet Catholic has four sophomores and three juniors in their rotation and even more talent on the underclassmen teams, Gura said.

Although the Hilltoppers will surely be tested as they return from the holiday break and begin ESCC play, Jackson is excited about the direction the team is trending.

“Our chemistry is improving and we are getting more comfortable playing with one another,” Jackson said. “We are beginning to trust each other and smooth out all the rough edges. I think we will be a dangerous team in the coming seasons.”

Joliet boxer trains for middleweight title

BY FRANK VAISVILAS The Herald-News correspondent JOLIET – A Joliet boxer who trains in the city is preparing for the biggest fight of his career.

Osumanu Adama, who trains out of the Round One Boxing gym downtown, will face world champion Gennady Golovkin, 31, in the WBA middleweight title bout on Feb. 1 in Monte Carlo.

“For us, it’s a dream fight,” Adama’s trainer, Joseph Awinongya, said.

And it’s a fight that Awinongya said many critics are not giving Adama, 33, any chance of winning. Golovkin is the No. 2-ranked middleweight in the world, according to BoxRec, while Adama is ranked 14th.

The fight with Adam a wa s ac ce pt ed by Golovkin’s promoters just to keep the champion busy until possibly more “interesting” fights later in the year, according to Boxingnews24.com.

“They’re saying (Adama) can’t last three rounds, but we’re going to give (Golovkin) a bigtime surprise,” Awinongya said.

It’s a contest that Adama has been waiting for. Awinongya said Golovkin’s camp had refused Adama’s challenge four times in the past before finally agreeing to the match.

“It’s going to be a much easier fight than we thought,” Awinongya said. “... Osumanu has more boxing skills.”

But he conceded that Adama has to be sure to put up a good defense against Golovkin, who is 28-0, with 25 of those victories coming via a knockout.

“I feel good about this fight (against Golovkin). It’s something I’ve been preparing for.”

But most importantly, Adama’s key to victory will be staying focused and not getting caught up in the hype of competing on a world stage, he said.

Adama knows exactly what’s at stake. A victory and a title belt could mean providing his family with the kind of life that he’s always wanted. He has a 12-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son who are in his native country of Ghana.

“I miss them,” Adama said. “Because of them, that’s why I’m killing myself so, so they could be happy.”

Adama came to the U.S. in 2009 to train and fight professionally and had a rough start.

“Nobody in the boxing world gave him any chance,” Awinongya said.

Adama moved to Joliet in 2010 to train with Awinongya, who’s also from Ghana, and he signed with Wasfi Tolaymat of the Chicago Fight Club.

After making that move, Adama began to see more success in the ring and now has a record of 22-3 with 16 knockouts. His three losses were by decision.

Frigid weather forces Morris sustains early lead to defeat Seneca schools to cancel games

THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – Several area high schools have canceled or postponed today’s basketball games because of inclement weather.

As temperatures neared record-setting lows, most of the local public and private schools closed their doors Monday, canceling all extracurricular events and athletic activities.

With a high projected to be about zero degrees, many district administrators canceled today’s boys and girls games and practices as well.

Eighteen local boys and girls varsity games were scheduled to take place on Tuesday evening.

Plainfield School Dis-

trict 202, Joliet Township High School District 204, Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210, Valley View School District 365U, Lockport Township High School District 205 and Minooka Community High School District 211 have canceled all boys and girls games and practices originally scheduled for today.

Additionally, Providence Catholic and Joliet Catholic – which has not resumed class due to parent-teacher conferences – will not hold games or practices today.

It has yet to be determined by the school districts and IHSA if the games will rescheduled or wiped from the calendar.

SENECA – Three-point shooting got Morris an early lead Saturday night, and the Redskins protected it sufficiently to defeat Seneca, 46-42, in nonconference boys basketball.

Seneca built a 7-0 lead in under two minutes, but once Morris broke through with a Brock Kukman jumper less than three minutes in, it did not let up. The Redskins scored 17 of the final 21 points in the first quarter, shooting 4 for 6 from 3-point land and 6 for 10, overall.

Austin Patterson made two more 3-pointers in the second quarter to go with the two he made in the first as the Morris lead grew as large as 25-14. Seneca needed a late Conlan Callahan 3 to get within eight to end the half.

“We didn’t play hard the first half. That’s the difference in the

ballgame,” Seneca coach Russell Witte said. “We tried to faceguard [Patterson]. We practiced on it for a couple days, and then we get into the game and it just kinda broke down.”

Six points from Austin Applebee and five from Patterson during the third quarter allowed Seneca to narrow its deficit to 3328 entering the fourth quarter.

A conventional three-point play from Brad Wyss and baskets from Applebee and Callahan brought the Irish within 37-35 of Morris with half of a quarter to play.

Morris, which had struggled to score with Seneca’s defensive attention focused on Patterson, turned to Jake Walker. Walker scored seven of his 13 points during the fourth quarter, including a jumper and a 3 on consecutive possessions with Seneca within two points of the lead.

“I’m just trying to find the best shot for me. I was able to get open,

and then I just took the shots that were open,” Walker said.

Late in the fourth, the Irish missed six consecutive shots. By the time Callahan ended the skid with a 3 with less than a second showing on the clock, it was too late.

“We knew that there was gonna be a run at some point,” Kukman said, “and we had to weather the storm and just get right back at them, and I think we did that.”

Classes teach how to aid mentally ill

When someone becomes physically ill or gets injured, hopefully first aid is available until that person can receive professional help.

What about the one who has a mental illness, however? Now, there is first aid for that as well, and classes are available for the general public.

“If you think of first aid that everybody has heard of ... it takes care of physical cuts, scrapes, bruises and things like that,” said John Moss, a certified mental health first aid instructor from the Grundy County Health Department.

“This [the class] is mental health first aid, which is the same basic concept. But, as opposed to cuts, scrapes and bruises, its for [aiding] people you may come across in our daily life who may be struggling with some type of mental issue and how to respond to that ... and how to keep yourself safe as well as providing as much help as you can for that individual.”

The class is geared toward everyone.

“We have librarians, teachers ... whoever wants to take the class,” Moss said of the eight-hour course, which is cut down from the original 12 hours.

The class can be taught in one day, but often will be split into two or three days. The students will take a test, and if they pass, receive a card that indicates they are certified in mental health first

aid, which will last for a couple of years before recertification is necessary.

Moss, a mental health and substance abuse therapist at the Grundy County Health Department, teaches the course outside of his normal work.

The cost of the class is $15, and Moss noted that is “basically the cost of the book, which you can keep and take home.”

Mental health first aid training was developed in Australia in 2001 and has since spread to other countries. It came to the United States in 2008. The official mascot for the course is a Koala named ALGEE. ALGEE represents the action plan, which is repeatedly emphasized throughout the course.

According to the “Mental Health First Aid USA” book, the name stands for: (A) “Assess for risk of suicide or harm;” (L) “Listen nonjudgmentally”; (G) “Give reassurance and information; (E) “Encourage appropriate professional help”; and (E) Encourage self-help and other support strategies.”

The number of students in a class varies.

“We usually like to keep it no more than 30,” Moss said. “I’ve done classes with seven or eight people, and I’ve done classes with 40 people.

There’s a lot of interaction that takes place during the class. ...We’re not just lecturing for eight straight hours. We have them get up; they’re moving around and doing things to keep them interested.”

Many areas of mental health are discussed throughout the course.

“We talk about anxiety, depression, substance abuse, bipolar psychotic disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia. ...We get into suicidal behavior and nonsuicidal self-injury,” he explained.

When a person certified in mental health first aid encounters someone with a mental issue, perhaps at a grocery store, he or she should assess the situation and make sure

he or she is safe.

“Sometimes when making your assessment, it may be something that is way outside your realm,” he said. “Like for myself, because I’m a clinician, I’m experienced. ... My comfort zone is probably a lot higher than someone else’s. ... If it is outside what you are comfortable with, call somebody who is. Keep an eye on the situation and make sure they stay as safe as you can make them and call someone.”

The person with the mental health first aid certification is there to help the person, though not necessarily alleviating the problem altogether.

“I can’t guarantee everything is going to be better,” Moss said, “but I can tell you that I’m going to sit here and listen to you. I will give you some information. ... I’m going to stay here with you and I’m going to do my best to help you. ... Maybe the thing they’re upset about is that their spouse died

a week ago. Well, I can’t make that better, but I’ll sit here and I’ll hold your hand. ... I’ll try to get as much help as I can get you.”

Mental health first aid training is just part of the community outreach provided by the Grundy County Health Department.

“One of the big things we want to emphasize at the health department in Grundy County, is we do a lot of community education,” Moss said.

After winning with dummy’s spade ace, declarer cashed the heart ace. When East dropped the 10, South deduced that hearts were 3-1. He cashed dummy’s club king, played a club to his ace, and led his last spade.

If West had found the best defense, discarding a diamond, declarer would have won with dummy’s spade king and led another spade, discarding his remaining diamond – the key play. Probably East would have led a spade, but Kaplan would have ruffed high, played a diamond to dummy’s ace, ruffed dummy’s diamond seven, and crossruffed the rest of the tricks.

Instead, West trumped the second spade and returned his third heart. Kaplan claimed, saying that he would discard his last diamond on dummy’s spade king and ruff his two low clubs on the board.

Brilliant, especially for someone who was only 16 years old.

Cirrhosis sufferers should try non-drug strategies for pain Dear Doctor K: I have cirrhosis of the liver. I also get tension headaches.

What pain reliever can I take for my tension headaches?

Dear Reader: One of the liver’s many jobs is detoxification – ridding the blood of toxins. Cirrhosis, a liver disease, interferes with the liver’s ability to detoxify substances in the blood.

Your liver sees medications as toxins. When your liver is compromised, medications that are normally considered “safe” may no longer be safe for you.

The safest pain medicine for someone with cirrhosis is acetaminophen (Tylenol). However, even this is more risky in people with cirrhosis. That’s because this medicine can be toxic to the liver. There is some evidence that it may be more likely to injure a liver already damaged, such as from cirrhosis. I advise patients with cirrhosis not to take more than 2,000 milligrams (mg) in one day, or more than 650 mg per dose. That’s the equivalent of two regular-strength acetaminophen tablets. Take acetaminophen for the shortest time as possible. Some doctors believe it’s OK for people with cirrhosis to take as much as 3,000 milli-

Another frequently used non-prescription class of painkillers is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Unfortunately, cirrhosis raises the risk of internal bleeding from NSAIDs. Also, cirrhosis makes the kidneys more vulnerable to injury from drugs, particularly NSAIDs. So I think it’s best for people with cirrhosis to avoid NSAIDs. • Ice or heat, and rest. Numb the pain with an ice pack, wrapped in a towel and applied to your forehead and temples for 15 minutes at a time. If muscle tension accompanies your head pain, apply heat packs to your neck and the back of your head. Retreating to a dark, quiet room to rest can also help.

• Tai chi and yoga appear to reduce headache frequency and severity. But they don’t help relieve a headache once it has begun.

• Acupuncture involves inserting

fine needles into the skin. This may release endorphins, the body’s natural painkilling chemicals. Acupuncture can be used for relieving head pain as it occurs and for reducing headache frequency.

• Biofeedback. Head pain is often triggered by muscle tension. During biofeedback sessions you’ll learn to recognize when you’re tensing up the muscles in the back, neck, shoulders or head – and to relax them before they cause pain. Biofeedback treats and prevents tension headaches.

• Massage. I’ve had several patients who have found that massage of the muscles in the back of the neck gave them relief, though I know of no studies proving its value.

Finally, avoid situations that seem to bring on your tension headaches, such as working at a computer uninterrupted for several hours, or arguments with your children. It may reduce the number of tension headaches you get, and it won’t damage your liver.

Mom’s a weekend alcoholic Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and live with my mother, who is divorced from my father and also from her second husband. During the week, when my mother works, she tells me how good I am, how much she loves me and how proud she is of me.

But on the weekends, she turns into a monster.

Mom is an alcoholic. She has a good job and rarely misses work because she only drinks on the weekends. When she is drinking, she is a different person. She says she hates me and wishes I were never born.

I try to tell her to stop drinking, but she just says to mind my own business.

She never hits me, but she threatens to. Sometimes I wonder if, deep down, she really does hate me. What should I do when she is drinking? I would rather have no mother than one who drinks. – Nameless, Brunswick, Ga. Dear Nameless: You need to join Alateen. Alateen is a fellowship of teenagers who are relatives and friends of alcoholics. Your mother does love her daughter, but her love is trumped by drinking. Alcoholics usually hate themselves, which causes them to act as though they hate everyone around them.

Because they can’t face their self-loathing, they take their hostility out on others. Don’t argue with Mom when she’s drinking; indeed, whenever possible, avoid being around her at

You will learn in Alateen that alcoholism is a disease. Though it cannot be cured, alcoholics can choose to stop hating themselves, stop drinking alcohol and begin leading happy, productive and loving lives. I know this is what you want for your mom. Dr. Wallace: I’m in my first year of college and required to pass two semesters of a foreign language. I decided to take French, but I’m having a tough time. I took three years of Spanish in high school and didn’t have one problem. That’s probably because my parents and I speak Spanish at home.

My professor advised me to drop French with no grade and take Spanish next semester. I really wanted to learn another language, but not at the expense of my grade point average. What do you think I should do? – Lupe, El Paso, Tex. Dear Lupe: Take your professor’s advice. It is very difficult and time-consuming to learn a foreign language at the college level without prior classwork at the secondary-school level. Fulfill your foreign language requirement by taking Spanish. If you want to learn French, inquire if you can audit the class (take it without getting a grade) next year.

‘Snark, sass and style’ Fashion bloggers Tom and Lorenzo strike a chord

But that’s what happened to Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez, creators of TomandLorenzo.com, a fashion and pop-culture blog that offers smart, sharply written, but never mean criticism of celebrity style.

TLo, as the duo is known to devotees, wrote a post in August 2012 about tennis star Serena Williams, who’d worn a red form-fitting Victoria Beckham dress for a “Late Show” appearance. The post was linked by a bunch of bigger sports sites, generating so much traffic that TomandLorenzo.com crashed.

To this day, it’s their most popular post.

But it’s the site’s second most-viewed post – a 6,000word “Mad Men” essay – that helps to explain the 9 million page views per month chalked up by TLo and distinguishes the duo in a field of culture bloggers.

“They’re the perfect combination of snark, sass & style. And I learn stuff too!,” tweeted Mary Beth Mosley, one of TLo’s “bitter kittens” (a.k.a. dedicated fans).

“Being a gay man in a semi-rural area, Tom & Lorenzo are the gay grandfathers I have been looking for my entire life,” Jake Bowen wrote in an email.

But Fitzgerald and Marquez found a niche.

In addition to offering show recaps, whenever new episodes are airing they publish the Wednesday feature “Mad Style,” which interprets the choices of costume designer Janie Bryant.

“Tom and Lorenzo’s ability to follow a character’s development through the costume design of ‘Mad Men’ continues to amaze me and leaves me with a feeling of awe,” Bryant wrote in an email. “After reading their analysis, I am

always impressed with their acute attention to detail.”

Fitzgerald calls the website a representation of his and Marquez’s 17-year relationship, which culminated in their marriage this summer.

In February, Fitzgerald and Marquez, both 47, will release their book, “Everyone Wants to Be Me or Do Me: Tom & Lorenzo’s Fabulous & Opinionated Guide to Celebrity Life & Style.”

When a lady star does well on the red carpet, they give her a “Werq!” in the spirit of Ru Paul. But when she experiences missteps, they generally don’t excoriate her for it. They tell her to fire her stylists. Or they tell her, “Girl, that’s not your dress.”

Their criticism isn’t limited to women. TomandLorenzo.com is one of the few sites that doles its hilariously tetchy commentary on male and female stars alike. A regular reader knows a picture of Johnny Depp in leather fringe and denim is going to elicit the words “elderly gay wind chime.”

It may seem silly to obsess about these things, but Fitzgerald and Marquez have pulled back the curtain on the theatrics and strategies of the red carpet, and there’s nothing simple about it. It’s an event that’s just as highly orchestrated as a wedding, all for the sake of selling you something.

“When you feature a red-carpet post, you’re promoting the designer who gave them the clothes, the stylist who styled them – even if you don’t name the person – the shoes, the bag, everything.

The red carpet is the phoniest thing in the world, and there is so much money on the line,” Fitzgerald said. “The minute that stiletto hits the red carpet and she pivots out of her limo seat and stands up, it’s all about promoting her, promoting her movie, promoting her dress, promoting her shoes, promoting her jewelry.

So much is on the line.”

“Everything is calculated,” Marquez added.

“Right! This is why we’re so damn critical,” Fitzgerald said. “I would never criticize a person in the real world the way I critique someone wearing $75,000 worth of stuff to promote a $200 million project.”
