JOLIET – An outspoken critic of the Rialto Square Theater’s new marquee addressed the mayor during Monday night’s pre-council meeting, asking why she isn’t being considered over other candidates for appointment to the Rialto’s governing board.

“I sent you my resume. …

You didn’t call me. You sent me a rejection letter,” said Mary Beth Gannon, a longtime Joliet resident.

Mayor Tom Giarrante’s letter, which Gannon posted on Facebook, stated he received her resume but that he has “been in contact with two Joliet residents that had contacted [him] earlier in the year.” He then wrote he would keep her resume on file for future reference.

There’s only one vacant

seat on the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, with Giarrante having appointed two members to five-year terms last month.

Tom Thanas, former city manager and longtime Joliet attorney, is one of the interested candidates for the Rialto board, and he reached out several months ago, Giarrante said Monday night.

But Giarrante declined Monday to name the other person who submitted a resume.

“You produced one name, apparently. Tom Thanas.

Who’s the other one?” Councilman Larry Hug asked during the meeting. When Giarrante refused, Hug responded, “Thanks for the transparency.”

When asked by a Herald-News reporter after the meeting why he won’t offer up the person’s name, Giarrante

said: “You’ll get transparency if and when I bring his name up.”

Jim Smith, chairman of the Rialto’s governing board, told The Herald-News he does not know the name of the third person.

Giarrante’s appointments come on heels of controversy surrounding the Joliet theater’s new marquee design.

Many residents have criticized the new design, first unveiled in November, saying it doesn’t fit with the 88-year-old building’s character and that the space on three sides of the marquee to be devoted to honor the donor’s parents is too prominent.

Plainfield approves sign variances

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Drivers may see new, larger signs for several businesses along Route 59 after village trustees approved sign variances Monday.

Sign variances for Adventist Healthcare Plainfield Medical Campus, Ross Dress for Less and the Vintage Harvest Retail Center were passed after brief discussions about how each applicant needed better signage.

Trustees and village staff also reminded residents of several measures the village and residents need to take to prepare for the cold weather combined with winter storms this week.

Adventist Healthcare, located at 15720 S. Route 59, requested a variance to the village’s zoning code so it could build a ground monument sign.

The issue came up at the Dec. 15 board meeting, and trustees directed the village attorney to draft an ordinance allowing a 64 square foot ground sign up to 15 feet in height.

Trustee Bill Lamb first sup-

ported limiting the sign to 13 feet in height at that meeting because he wanted to see the sign level with signs from businesses across the street, which are at a lower ground level. But he said he supported a sign up to 15 feet high Monday.

“They do need the bigger sign,” Lamb said, adding that the 15 feet is just a limit. “They don’t have to do 15 feet. It can go lower.”

The Ross store at the southwest corner of 127th Street and Route 59 asked for two new signs.

This includes a new main sign of about 300 square feet and a smaller 210 square foot sign on the north side of the building facing Walmart. The respective limits on sign sizes are 145 and 165 square foot.

Lamb questioned whether the sign at the side of the building would attract enough traffic to warrant a variance.

But sign developer Chuck Zenn said the sign was a result of corporate and local store needs.

“We do feel we have good visibility on 127th Street, and it’s a workable sign,” Zenn said.

tage Harvest Retail Center sign, Angelo Kleronomos, also said there was a greater need for a larger, more visible sign at the retail center, which is trying to attract businesses into empty lots.

“We’ve had some people back away because of the fact that [the sign] is set back,” Kleronomos said.

After a brief discussion, trustees unanimously approved a sign that was a maximum 150 square feet and 15 feet tall.

Village officials also wanted residents to be prepared for the wintry weather this week.

• Road crews will be putting sand on the roads this week instead of salting because salt doesn’t work at the cold temperatures this week.

• Waste Management crews that couldn’t pick up garbage at some locations in the village Monday will pickup Tuesday.

• A warming shelter and supplies for village residents and nonresidents are at police headquarters, 14300 Coil Plus Drive. Extra police personnel will be on duty Tuesday morning.

“We can do it. If Dorothy Mavrich can do it, why can’t the rest of us?” Gannon said. As of Monday night, the group’s GoFundMe site has raised $600 since going live about three weeks ago.

Joliet Area Historical Museum exhibit on display until March 22

JOLIET – It’s never too late to mend, but you only have until March 22 to see how it’s been done locally.

A temporary exhibit at the Joliet Area Historical Museum uses photographs and artifacts from former prisoners, guards and wardens to show the history of the Joliet Correctional Center on Collins Street, the adjacent Women’s Prison and Stateville.

The exhibit shares its title with an 1856 novel by Charles Reade about a man locked up for a crime he didn’t commit.

“It’s Never Too Late to Mend” also is painted on the floor of the Collins Street facility, which was under construction in 1856 and operated until 2001.

“I think we get the most questions about the prisons from visitors,” Executive Director Greg Peerbolte said.

While Joliet was nationally known as “a prison town” for decades, city leaders during the rebuilding years of the 1990s wanted to downplay the reputation.

“It’s more of interest now. I think it’s a generational thing.

It’s not the only thing [the area is known for] anymore and it’s become part of history to people,” Peerbolte said. “Collins Street was open from before the Civil War to 9/11. That’s a lot of American history.”

When the first prisoners arrived in Joliet in 1858, “it must’ve seemed like a paradise compared to ‘the dungeon’ of Alton,” Peerbolte said.

Peerbolte said the focus of the exhibit is “reform,” and while some notable inmates are mentioned, there’s no “Hollywood” view of prison life.

“I’d like to think most people in prison deserve to be there and didn’t want anyone who might be a crime victim or related to a crime victim think we were disrespecting them and glorifying the criminals,” Peerbolte said.

Among the exhibits are “the Shankboard” – a collection of common items turned into deadly weapons. Also, there are cell doors and locks from the 19th century, old handcuffs, and a Tommy Gun that Joliet police used while making arrests in the early 20th century.

The exhibits include a noose, too.

“Hangings were actually done at the Will County jail instead of the prison. Invitations were sent out,” Peerbolte said.

Several visitors wrote suggestions to refurbish it as a separate museum or a restaurant.

Mike Johnson has volunteered at the museum for eight years. Johnson was a guard at Joliet Correctional Center from 1984 to 1990 and a counselor there until 1998.

“People always ask about the prison and sometimes I’ve been able to answer their questions from my own [knowledge],” said Johnson, whose uniform also is on display in the exhibit.

In February, Johnson will lecture at the museum on the prison’s history and share his own anecdotes. Peerbolte said the date for that presentation will be finalized soon.

“We’re just known as a prison town from TV and movies,” Johnson said. “People are interested in that.”

Driver says GPS led him to drive onto railroad tracks

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A man told police he was following his GPS system when he turned onto railroad tracks Sunday night.

No one was injured when a passenger train struck the car about 10 minutes later near the Ninth Street crossing in Lockport.

Police Lt. Ron Huff said shortly after 7:30 p.m. the driver of the 2013 Ford Focus drove about 25 feet south of the crossing.

“It may have been telling him to turn on Commerce Street, but he went onto the tracks and the vehicle got stuck sideways across the tracks,” Huff said.

Timothy Cleary, who lives nearby, saw the Focus’ wheels spin in the gravel as the driver tried to move back.

“I was just looking out the window and he was trying to push out. I called 911 and made sure they knew what was going on because those trains come by so fast there,” Cleary said.

Huff said Lockport police notified the railroad, but railroad personnel were unable to reach the engineer in time.

Lockport Township Fire Chief Dave Skoryi said the crash happened about 7:45 p.m.

First Latina sworn in as Will County judge

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jessica Colon-Sayre’s late mother was proud of her, although she never quite got her title right.

“My mom would tell anyone – friends, people she just met, people she saw at the gas station – ‘This is my daughter. She’s the district attorney of the state of Illinois,’ ” Colon-Sayre said.

Colon-Sayre was an assistant Will County state’s attorney, but on Monday, she was sworn in as an associate judge and was certain her mother would have said she was now a judge for the entire state.

She also is the first female Hispanic judge in Will County.

Colon-Sayre became the county’s 20th associate judge.

Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said the 16 circuit judges believed Colon-Sayre was the most qualified of more than 30 applicants.

Colon-Sayre was born in Puerto Rico and graduated from DePaul University in 1996.

She received her law degree from John Marshall Law School and was an assistant state’s attorney for 11 years.

“Most of you who’ve worked with me or against me understand my passion for what I do,” Colon-Sayre said. “Now that I’m on this side [of the bench] that passion for what is just and fair will not waiver.”

Colon-Sayre resides in Crete with her husband, Todd, and two children, Dylan and Elsa.

Families argue outside courtroom following murder trial hearing

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Friends and relatives of a 16-year-old driveby shooting victim and supporters of the teen accused of his murder nearly came to blows Monday at the Will County Courthouse.

After Christopher Stamps, 16, appeared briefly before Judge Dave Carlson on murder charges for the Oct. 23 slaying of Latray Wright, also 16, tempers boiled over in the hallway.

A shouting match involving several people began near the elevators and con-

tinued as a dozen Will County Sheriff’s deputies were called to escort them to separate exits.

Christopher Stamps was led in by two Will County Sheriff’s deputies. He is being held in the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center, but is charged as an adult

with Wright’s murder.

Wright was fatally shot while walking near Princeton and Fairmont avenues in Lockport Township. Stamps was arrested three days later and charged in the death, according to police reports.

Police said online insults from one street gang faction

to another led to the drive-by shooting.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney John Connor and defense attorney Cosmo Tedone agreed to exchange Wright’s medical records from Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn and the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Snow will likely trigger Joliet parking ban

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet snow parking ban is likely to take effect if more than 2 inches of snow fall by Tuesday morning as predicted.

Joliet city officials anticipated at least 4 inches of snow between Monday night and Tuesday morning, which would put the snow parking into effect.

The National Weather Service has forecast between 3 and 7 inches of snow. Wind gusts up to 30 mph Tuesday and Wednesday create the possibility of blowing snow in some areas.

Under the Joliet snow parking ban, all vehicles must be moved off public streets for city plow trucks when 2 inches or more of snow falls. Once streets are clear, cars can be moved back.

That ban was revised in December when City Council members voted to allow park-

She said the ban revision was a compromise between residents and the city because some Joliet roadways are densely populated and offer the least amount of off-street parking.

“If they have any alleys at

all, they’re very narrow,” she said.

Residents can park on even street addresses during snowfall on sections of Raynor Avenue, Center Street, Marion Street and Jefferson Street, Heinemann said.

Colder north and northwest air is creating a climate more conducive to snow, said Eric Lenning, National Weather Service meteorologist. There was little snow in October and November and no snow throughout December.

“The snowfall [Monday] night would probably be as much as we’ve had this winter accumulatively thus far,” he said.

Lenning warned of bitterly cold air coming after the snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He said there will be wind gusts from 20 to 30 mph. The cold air can be dangerous and potentially deadly for people who go outside unprepared, he said.

Fee for new courthouse

Later this month, members of the Will County Board hope to take advantage of House Bill 5889 – which allows the county to impose court fees to help pay for construction of a new courthouse.

A public hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday for the county board’s Judicial Committee, in the committee room of the county building at 302 N. Chicago St. The public is invited to attend and to make public comment.

The money that’s raised through HB 5889 can only be used for the construction of a new courthouse, so the county cannot shift the money around to help fund juror costs, Schoenstedt said.

The new fee would raise between $1.5 and $2 million a year, but the entire courthouse project could cost anywhere between $140 and $200 million to build.

Objection filed to Shorewood trustee’s candidate papers THE HERALD–NEWS SHOREWOOD – A longtime village trustee’s candidacy for re-election is being challenged by one of the other candidates.

Anthony Luciano filed an objection to Trustee Jim McDonald’s petition for re-election, alleging that 55 of 147 signatures are invalid because either the signer is not a registered voter, is not in the district or is not a “proper person and not genuine.”

The village requires 132 valid signatures to appear on the ballot for the April 7 elections.

A public hearing on the objection has been set for 4 p.m.

Friday at Village Hall, One Towne Center Blvd.

Calls to Luciano and McDonald were not immediately returned Monday.

Four candidates are vying for three openings on the village board. McDonald has been a trustee for 11 years.

WILL COUNTY – There are two state laws coming this year that directly affect Will County government – one puts more money into the budget and another takes it away.

If nothing is done, Senate Bill 3075 – which gives jurors a pay raise but provides no funding mechanism – is estimated to burn as much as a $350,000 hole in the county’s budget this year, Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

“I feel strongly that jurors should get paid more, but on the other hand, I also don’t believe that the county should, just all the sudden, have to pay for it,” Schoenstedt said.

But a fix is in the works, state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said.

After discussions with McGuire and other local lawmakers, the original sponsor of the bill, state Sen. John Mulroe, D-Chicago, agreed to sponsor follow-up legislation that raises court-filing fees to help offset costs, McGuire said.

While opponents have argued a fee increase is unfair to court users, McGuire said there’s a system in place in

Will County that allows people to request their fees be waived.

The county spent about $330,000 last year in juror payments, which includes gas mileage, Schoenstedt said.

Such an unfunded state mandate puts pressure on the budget, he said.

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner announced Monday that Joliet native Leslie Munger will be named as Illinois’ next comptroller, although it remained unclear how long the Republican’s appointment for the four-year position would last.

Munger will fill the office left vacant when Judy Baar Topinka, a Republican, died last month shortly after winning a second term as comptroller. Munger, 58, was born

in Joliet and graduated from Joliet West High School in 1974, when she was recognized as Miss Alpha Omega for her involvement in student activities, according to her brother Doug Geissler.

“She’s deeply honored to be appointed to serve the people of Illinois. She will be good at what she does. She works harder than anybody,” Geissler said.

She passed away surrounded by family on January 1st at Provena Hospital in Joliet, at the age of 84.

Janet is survived by Donald, her loving husband of 62 years; and three daughters, Sheryl Larson (Hank Kinzie), Renee Kemph (Tom) and Jana Smith (Brian).

She is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Strom, and numerous cousins.

Janet was a secretary for the Will County superintendent of schools for five years and the Joliet grade schools for 16 years.

She was the lead in a Sweet Adeline’s quartet, which won the regional championship in the early 70’s. She was also a volunteer for various organizations and honed her bridge skills over several decades.

As per her wishes, Janet was cremated. A memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Joliet, Illinois at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17th.

There’s been disagreement over how long a Rauner appointee should stay in office.

Outgoing Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn has called legislators to Springfield on Thursday to consider a possible 2016 special election for comptroller, saying voters should have a say.

But Rauner says he has the legal authority to name a full-term appointment. The Republican, who takes office next week, and Munger pushed Monday for another option:

merging the comptroller and treasurer offices.

“I’m not interested in a political career, only on doing what is best for the state we all love and want to make great again,” Munger said in a statement, adding she’d “relentlessly advocate” for a constitutional amendment to combine the offices. “That’s what Judy wanted, and the people deserve the opportunity to vote on it.

I would look forward to helping eliminate the very office to

which I was appointed.”

A merger of the comptroller and treasurer offices has often been discussed, though legislative attempts have fizzled out.

The comptroller writes the state’s checks, while the treasurer is tasked with investing state funds.

Munger lost in November to Democratic state Rep. Carol Sente for a seat in the northwest suburbs. She has previously held director and management positions at Proctor

& Gamble and Helene Curtis Industries, leaving her last job in 2001.

Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf said a fly-around tour is planned with Munger and Rauner later in the week. He said Topinka’s longtime aide, Nancy Kimme, will become Munger’s chief of staff.

He is survived by his loving wife, Billie Louise (nee Ratliff); four children, William Patrick (Sandra) of Winnetka, James Thomas (Agnes) of Joliet, Mary Therese (Ronald) Dell of Wheaton and Susan Louise (Douglas) Parrett of Champaign; grandchildren, Eli (Jodi) Limacher of Shorewood, Kirk (Hillary) Limacher of Winnetka, Zachary Limacher of Seattle, Catherine Limacher of Joliet, Jacob (Caroline) Dell of Downers Grove, Adam (Lisa) Dell, Mariah Dell, Elizabeth Dell, John (Crystal) Parrett, all of Chicago and Anne Parrett of Milwaukee; great-grandchildren, Andrew, George, Henry, Ava, Audrey and Amelia Limacher.

He was loved and will be remembered for his wisdom, faith and his wonderful sense of humor.

Dr. William Carl Limacher, age 98, passed away in his home, Sunday, January 4, 2015.

His last hours, like his entire life, were spent with his family and Billie, his beloved wife of 70 years.

Bill was born August 29, 1916, in Joliet where he lived his entire life.

He was the third of four sons of Dr. John and Lillian Limacher. He was a graduate of St. Raymond Catholic School, attended De La Salle High School and was the Valedictorian of the first graduating class of Joliet Catholic High School. He graduated from Loyola dental school in 1939 with a DDS degree and was awarded the coveted Blue Key Award for Academic Excellence, the Omicron Kappa Epsilon National Honor Society for excellence in Dentistry and Scholastic grades.

He played on the golf teams at De La Salle, Joliet Catholic and Loyola.

Following graduation, he began his Dental Residency at the United State Marine Hospital on Staten Island, NY. After Pearl Harbor, he applied for a dental commission in the Dental Corp of the United States Navy and received the Commission of Lt. JG. Before serving In Okinawa, he was stationed at the Naval Air Technical Training Base in Norman, OK where he married the love of his life, Billie Louise Ratliff.

Born in Joliet, formerly of Minneapolis, Minnesota and currently residing in Conway, Arkansas. A Joliet Township Central class of 1977 graduate, she was employed as a personal caretaker in Conway, Arkansas.

University of Illinois board mulls freezing in-state tuition

URBANA – The University of Illinois Board of Trustees is considering a proposal to freeze in-state tuition for freshmen for the first time in more than 20 years, officials said Monday.

A board committee planned to review the proposal on Monday, and their recommendation is scheduled to go to the full board on Jan. 15.

If approved, the base tuition for in-state freshmen next fall would be the same as for the current school year: $12,036 a year in Urbana-Champaign, $10,584 at the Chicago campus and $9,405 in Springfield. The rate would remain unchanged for four years by law, though student fees and housing costs could increase.

Base tuition would increase by 2 percent for non-Illinois residents.

University officials said holding the line on tuition will help middle-class Illinois students, whose family incomes are not low enough to qualify for federal or state financial aid, but not high enough to cover costs on their own. They said the last time there was no tuition increase was the 1993-94 academic year.

University officials also said they hope to hold future tuition increases to the rate of inflation or lower, although that depends on state funding and other factors.

The Barack Obama Foundation also is screening proposals from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Honolulu and New York.

Foundation officials said last week they’re worried the University of Chicago may not be able to secure the land it has proposed because it doesn’t control the property. Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said it was working to address the concerns.

The sites are in Washington and Jackson parks. The public hearings are scheduled for Jan. 13 and 14.

Illinois pilot OK after small plane crash in eastern Indiana

SELMA, Ind. – Indiana State

Police say an Illinois pilot has survived a single-engine plane crash in eastern Indiana.

Indiana State Police say 59-year-old Richard Kingston of Norris City, Illinois, was conscious and alert when troopers located him Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say they responded to a report of a plane crash in southeastern Delaware County.

Troopers were taken by tractor to the scene, where they found Kingston. He was the only person aboard. Emergency workers extricated him from the 1990 single-engine Raytheon aircraft. It had skidded across a harvested corn field into an area of cut trees.

Kingston was taken to a Muncie hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The FAA is investigating.

Jury selection begins in central Illinois murder trial

BLOOMINGTON – Jury selection has started in the trial of a central Illinois man accused in the 2013 beating death of his girlfriend’s toddler son.

The trial started Monday in Bloomington for 25-year-old Nicholas Compton of Colfax. He is charged with murder and other counts in the death of 3-year-old Robert Cramer in March 2013 in Normal. He has pleaded not guilty.

Compton’s girlfriend, Danielle Fischer, also is charged in the case. She has pleaded not guilty and is next due in court Jan. 29.

WJBC radio reported Compton is accused of hitting the boy in the abdomen, causing tissue damage that led to a fatal seizure.

Compton has insisted the child

was injured accidentally.

2 dead men in parking garage believed homeless

ROCKFORD – Autopsies are planned to determine the cause of death for two men whose bodies were found in a Rockford parking deck.

The bodies of the 40- and 56-year-old men were found around 6:20 a.m. Monday in a vestibule on the fourth level of the downtown parking deck by a facilities manager.

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says autopsies are planned for Tuesday.

She says both men are believed to be homeless, but below-zero temperatures might not have been the culprit in the deaths.

NEW YORK – After six months of falling oil prices, investors are starting to worry that the prolonged slump is signaling a weaker global economy.

That fear shook financial markets Monday as oil plunged again, dipping below $50 for the first time in more than five years and triggering a big sell-off, not just among energy stocks but across the entire stock market.

Since the decline began, investors assumed lower oil prices, caused by a glut in supply, will be a boon to the U.S. economy. That thesis was discarded Monday as prices plunged further and investors started to fret about the wider implications of the drop.

The S&P 500 index dropped 37.62 points, or 1.8 percent, to 2,020.58. That was the biggest one-day slump for the index since Oct. 9. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 331.34 points, or 1.9 percent, to 17,501.65. The Nasdaq composite fell 74.24 points, or 1.6 percent, to 4,652.57.

CDC: Flu season worsens, could peak this month

NEW YORK – The flu is now widespread in all but seven states, and hospitalization rates match the dismal season two years ago. While health officials fear this will be an unusually bad year, it’s too soon to say.

The latest figures released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the flu hitting hard in most of the 43 states where the

The report is for the week of Christmas, and it shows the flu season following a similar track as the last two, when flu activity peaked no later than mid-January. Perhaps that will happen this winter, too, the CDC’s Dr. Michael Jhung said.

Experts are worried because the nasty bug making most people sick isn’t included in this year’s vaccine. Preliminary data on how well the vaccine is working is still weeks away. Flu is one of the nation’s leading causes of death, killing roughly 24,000 a year, on average.

Baby snatched by gunman found dead; clues sought

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Detectives trying to determine who abducted a 3-week-old infant after wounding her parents and uncle at a home have few clues and are asking for the public’s help, officials said Monday.

The baby, a 10-pound girl named Eliza Delacruz, was found dead Sunday in a trash bin in Imperial Beach, about 120 miles south of Long Beach, where her relatives were shot Saturday.

The infant’s body was found at a strip mall in the city near Mexico, raising the possibility the assailant crossed or hoped to cross the border. Long Beach detectives believe the family was targeted for some reason but do not yet know the motive.

Jury selection underway in Boston Marathon bomb case

By DENISE LAVOIE The Associated Press BOSTON – Some of the prospective jurors who could decide Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s fate got their first look Monday at the young man accused of bombing the Boston Marathon, and they seemed transfixed by the sight of the shaggy-haired 21-year-old.

Tsarnaev, for his part, rose to his feet Dzhokhar a n d n o d d e d , Tsarnaev slightly and awkwardly, as he was introduced to the first group of about 200 citizens.

So began what could be weeks of jury selection in the nation’s most closely watched terror trial since the Oklahoma City bombing two decades ago.

Security was tight, with dozens of police officers stationed inside and outside the federal courthouse along with bomb-sniffing dogs.

The potential jurors seemed riveted by Tsarnaev and by U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr.’s explanation of the gravity of what they will be asked to do if they

are picked: They must decide not only whether the former college student is guilty or innocent, but also what his punishment will be if he is convicted – life in prison or execution.

The judge told the potential jurors not to think of the trial as “an annoying burden” but as a needed service and an “important duty of citizenship.”

Tsarnaev is accused of planning and carrying out the twin pressure-cooker bombings that killed three people and wounded more than 260 near the finish line of the race on April 15, 2013.

O’Toole briefly outlined the 30 charges against Tsarnaev, which include using a weapon of mass destruction.

He also is accused of killing an MIT police officer as he and his brother, now dead, made their getaway.

Tsarnaev, flanked by his attorneys, sat at a table at the front of the room. Wearing a dark sweater and khaki pants, he looked down much of the time and picked at his beard.

He nodded to the first group of potential jurors in the morning. When he stood for a second group of 200 in the afternoon, he looked down at the floor.

Over three days, a pool of about 1,200 prospective jurors will be summoned to court. Twelve jurors and six alternates will ultimately be selected. The judge said testimony in the trial will begin on Jan. 26 and last three to four months.

Heather Abbott, of Newport, Rhode Island, who lost her left leg below the knee in the Boston attack, said she plans to attend some of the proceedings. She said her biggest question may be an unanswerable one: Why? “I don’t know whether I’ll ever get any answer to that question, but I guess I want to understand what the thought process was,” Abbott said. “Why he would want to do this to people ... it’s really hard to understand.”

The unusually large pool was seen as necessary because of the need to weed out those unduly influenced by heavy news coverage of the tragedy, along with the many runners, spectators and others affected by the bombings.

Also, those who are unalterably opposed to the death penalty will not be allowed on the jury.

Tsarnaev’s lawyers tried and failed to get the trial moved out of Boston.

But Rauner and others insist that Illinois’ first divided government in more than a decade won’t mean four years of gridlock, but rather produce the kind of chemistry needed to end years of legislative near-paralysis.

If so, Illinois could be a notable outlier in an increasingly polarized nation of red and blue states, and could help Republicans solve the mystery of how to become relevant again in a place that’s been trending

“I think they’ll be very productive,” said former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady.

But first, Rauner has fences to mend. The multimillionaire private equity investor spent the year-long campaign ripping Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and the powerful leaders of the Illinois House and Senate, calling them “career politicians” who drove the state into a “death spiral.”

Rauner, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton made nice during a two-hour meeting shortly after Election Day. Rauner also been calling every member of the Legislature, saying he wants to get to know each one personally.

Many are skeptical. Among them are labor leaders, several of whom Rauner singled out by name during the campaign as contributing to the state’s financial ruin. The unions are gearing up for a fight should

Rauner move to weaken their bargaining power, as Daniels and Walker did in Indiana and Wisconsin.

“Bruce Rauner has made it very clear he’s very hostile to organized labor,” said Tom Balanoff, president of the Service Employees International Union Local 1.

Yet Balanoff, who was one of those Rauner accused of “owning” state government and the Democratic Party, said his union has worked with GOP governors in the past.

Rauner himself has seemed to be lowering expectations.

After telling voters during the campaign he had a plan to simultaneously lower taxes and increase spending for education, he now says the state’s finances are far worse than he was led to believe. It could be a way to give himself some wiggle room while pinning blame for unkept promises on the Democrats who preceded him.

The Associated Press BEIRUT – Lebanon turned back Syrians trying to cross the border Monday under strict new visa regulations, saying it simply cannot handle any more people displaced by the ongoing civil war.

The policy, requiring Syrians to obtain visas that sharply limit the time they can stay in Lebanon, effectively narrows one of the few escape routes left from a conflict that has displaced a third of Syria’s pre-war population and shows no sign of ending.

Humanitarian groups dealing with Syrian refugees say authorities should not close the doors on people desperate to leave.

Leading politician Walid Jumblatt said there should be difference in dealing with “refugees who are fleeing death and destruction in Syria after they lost their

homes,” and those who come to Lebanon for political activities.

“The vast majority of them left Syria because of fear of war, and they are innocent,” Jumblatt said in comments published Monday.

The violence in Syria between forces loyal to President Bashar Assad and those opposed to his rule have caused more than 3 million people to flee the country, mainly to neighboring Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and

Iraq. Western countries only have accepted small numbers of refugees, and hundreds of people have drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea on rickety ships. More than 200,000 have died since the uprising began in 2011.

Lebanese officials say they can’t absorb any more, estimating there are about 1.5 million Syrians in Lebanon – about one-quarter of the total population. Some 1.1 million are registered with the U.N.’s refugee agency.

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia – Highlighting the depth of Indonesia’s air safety problems, the transportation ministry announced harsh measures Monday against everyone who allowed AirAsia Flight 8501 to take off without proper permits – including the suspension of the airport’s operator and officials in the control tower.

The routing permits of all airlines flying in the country also will be examined to see if they are violating the rules, said Djoko Murjatmodjo, acting director general of air transportation.

“Who knows if other airlines are also doing the same thing?” he said.

The crackdown comes as searchers continue to fight bad weather while combing the Java Sea for bodies and wreckage of the Airbus A320 that crashed Dec. 28, killing all 162 passengers and crew on board.

The plane was traveling between Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, and Singapore on a Sunday. Officials have since said its permit for the popular route was only for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and that AirAsia quietly switched three of those days. Officials in Singapore, however, have said the plane was authorized to fly on Sundays from its end.

Applications for specific routes take into account issues including air traffic rights and airport takeoff and landing slots.

While the airline is being investigated, Indonesia has banned all AirAsia flights between Surabaya and Singapore.

AirAsia Indonesia President Director Sunu Widyatmoko said by text Monday that the airline will cooperate with the government during the evaluation, but would not comment on the permit allegations until the process is complete.

CHICAGO – Bruce Rauner became a Republican rock star when he unseated a Democratic governor in left-leaning Illinois, pledging to run Barack Obama’s home state in the mold of GOP darlings Scott Walker and Mitch Daniels. But as he takes office this month, many are wondering: Can he deliver on the hype?

There are reasons to believe the answer is no, and that Rauner’s victories may have ended on Election Day. Unlike Walker in Wisconsin and Daniels in Indiana – governors Rauner has called his role models – he inherits a state with deep financial problems and a Legislature that’s overwhelmingly Democratic.

That could make achieving his top priorities – such as closing the state’s multibillion-dollar budget hole and switching public employees to a 401(k)-

strongly Democratic.

“People have cherry picked [businesses] from us and laughed at us for many years,” said Republican state Sen. Bill Brady. “I think now people are looking at us with a cautious but also optimistic eye.”

Heightening Rauner’s predicament is Illinois’ history of putting off major issues that other states tackled during the recession. Thus, the state now has the nation’s worst-funded public pension system, slower-than-average job growth, billions in unpaid bills and the worst credit rating.

The political dynamic is now changed, either for better or worse.

With a Republican in the governor’s office, GOP lawmakers will at least have an incentive – some would say mandate – to put “yes” votes on major initiatives rather than just uniformly opposing, and Democrats may have to compromise more.

Treasurer raises insult taxpayers Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford gave several of his employees significant pay raises over the past year and awarded one-time payments to several employees a few months ago.

We expected more of Rutherford, a former Republican state senator. Rutherford will leave office in January, having lost in a four-way primary for the GOP nomination for governor. That means he’s essentially been a lame duck since April.

But his office gave pay raises ranging from 8 to 36 percent, and it awarded nearly $90,000 in one-time payments to 35 nonunion employees. Those payments included $10,000 to his former chief of staff, on top of an annual salary of about $125,000.

Rutherford defended the raises through his spokeswoman, Mary Frances Bragiel. She said the raises and payments were “all based on performance, job duty changes and more responsibility.” She said some of the payments and raises were used to help retain people and reflected successful programs in the office. She pointed out, for example, the unclaimed property division returned assets of more than $100 million for the first time in 2011; the total in 2013 was $139 million.

Frank Prochaska, a spokesman for Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said it amounted to “profiteering.” He said union employees received smaller pay bumps in recent negotiations. “It is a disgrace to dedicated state employees and public servants,” he said.

But the ones who should be complaining loudest are taxpayers. It’s amazing how many times state officials have said how tight the state’s budget is and how carefully they watch spending. And it’s equally amazing the number of times the state finds money to hand raises to loyal followers or to finance questionable programs.

Rutherford’s gubernatorial bid was derailed by accusations that so far haven’t been proved. We admired Rutherford’s common-sense approach to issues during the campaign and his determination to keep running, despite a clear signal his efforts were not going to be rewarded. That makes this action even more disappointing.

What taxpayers need, and want, are elected officials to be careful stewards of taxpayer dollars. We’re not opposed to deserving state employees receiving wage increases. But we are appalled when the amounts range from 8 percent to 36 percent. In most private businesses, such raises are most often below 5 percent, if that. Eight percent would be rare, and 36 percent is fantasy land.

Those numbers are even more ludicrous given the state’s terrible financial situation. It’s this kind of spending that placed Illinois in its current financial straits, and the state will remain there unless elected officials change their ways.

Good morning, USA, and Happy 2015. Well, I am on a new quest this year. I really am tired of big government and want to trim it down a notch. My quest is to join Mark Levin and bring about a constitutional convention.

We seem to have problems stopping the government from growing too big and lying too much.

The politicians need to have term limits, as do the Supreme Court justices.

We need to have either a flat tax (preferred) or a consumption tax.

Let’s make sure everybody pays

a fair share. I would like to see our borders tightened and made safe by our armed forces under direction of the Pentagon.

I would like to see us combine as many of our agencies as possible. An example would be combining the CIA, FBI with the NSA. How about combining the EPA with OSHA? I would like us to rid ourselves of the special-interest groups in Washington.

And I would like us to stop supporting freeloaders who make a mockery of our welfare systems.

Just a few thoughts for the new year.

Unique chemistry keeps Saints rolling

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – University of St. Francis men’s basketball coach Ryan Marks says there is a unique brand of chemistry at work.

Despite missing 6-foot-8 junior center Jens Kennedy – a Dwight graduate who was nursing an ankle injury – the Saints (12-4) whipped nonconference foe Indiana Northwest, 96-74, Monday night at the Sullivan Center for their sixth victory in seven games.

USF is 6-1 since the calendar flipped to December, and the only loss in that span was to NCAA Division II Lewis.

“It is kind of a unique chemistry,” Marks said. “Our team in general is not overwhelming people. We don’t have a 25-point-per-game guy.

We don’t have a star.

“We play 10-11 guys every night, and this group embraces that. They seem to be enjoying it. You can say we’re a law-of-averages team. Most nights, we have enough guys playing well enough for us to win.”

On Monday night, it was Ed Presniakovas (Plainfield South) and Ilya Ilyayev who led way. Presniakovas scored 15 of his 18 points and Ilyayev 14 of his game-high 27 in the first half, which ended with the Saints on top, 42-33. Presniakovas and reserve Ryan Peter (Joliet Catholic) sparked an 11-0 run late in the half that allowed USF to take control for good.

Junior guard Breshion Tucker (JCA), meanwhile, comes off the bench and embodies what Marks said about chemistry.

“Breshion transferred in to us this year,” Marks said. “He legitimately could be playing more minutes. He’s learning our system and is doing a marvelous job. He and the others off the bench give us a spark.

“Brian Edwards [Joliet West] is the same way. He comes off the bench and goes about his business.”

Ilyayev entered Monday’s game averaging a team-best 15.5 points, Kennedy 14.1 and Presniakovas 13.9. Presniakovas and guard Jo Jo Ballestero, who scored 18 points, provide much of the 3-point shooting – although the big men, Kennedy and Ilyayev, also have hit 28 of 55 3s between them.

“I think the CCAC has six or seven teams that legitimately are in the discussion for the top 25 teams in the country,” Marks said. “We want to continue playing well, and hopefully, five weeks from now, we are still among the five or six being talked about.”

Of this and that: • The discussion about the best large-school boys basketball teams in the Joliet area invariably includes Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Bolingbrook, in whichever order.

However, with the anticipated return of football standouts Miles Boykin and Nate Vejvoda, Providence also is mentioned as a possible factor in the second half of the season and the postseason.

The Celtics (7-6) play Tuesday night at Hales Franciscan.

Coach Tim Trendel, providing the best answer he can to the question so many have been asking, said Monday it is “5050” whether that game will mark Boykin’s season debut.

Vejvoda, however, will be out “another week or two.”

Boykin and Vejvoda were big-time receivers on Providence’s Class 7A football state championship team. A two-time all-area selection in basketball, Boykin will play his college football at Notre Dame, and Vejvoda will be at Iowa.

Boykin just returned from the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl that was held Sunday night in California, although he did not play because of the finger that was dislocated during the state playoffs and had to be surgically repaired.

He and Bolingbrook defensive lineman Micah Dew-Treadway were two of six Notre Dame recruits on the two rosters. Five, including Boykin and Dew-Treadway, were members of the West, which lost to the East, 24-3.

• Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Bolingbrook and Providence are among the schools that have been assigned to the Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional. All four basketball teams could be threats to win their regional and reach the sectional.

Of course, Neuqua Valley (13-1), which plays Tuesday night at Bolingbrook, also is in the field. So is Oswego, which is decent. By that time of year,

The pavilion will open at 4 p.m. Admission is $15. The program will include a live auction conducted by exBears defensive tackle Steve McMichael, who also will sign autographs. The bands Lucky Town (6 to 8 p.m.) and Back Country Roads (9 to 11 p.m.) will provide entertainment.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As the boys bowling season reaches the final week of its regular campaign, Joliet West is hopeful it has positioned itself for a strong finish.

That kicks off today when the Tigers meet Lockport at Strike N Spare II to see which squad heads into Saturday’s SouthWest Suburban Blue meet at Woodridge’s Brunswick Zone as the favorite.

Both are 7-2 in dual meets, but the Porters own a slight points lead.

Next Saturday, West competes in the IHSA Plainfield South Regional at Town & Country Lanes for the chance to advance to the Plainfield North Sectional, with team’s ultimate goal being a trip to the state finals in O’Fallon on Jan. 30-31.

A year ago, the Tigers fell one spot shy of advancing to the sectionals, so coach Scott Gentile realizes the postseason path will be challenging.

“We’ve been talking to the guys all year about being consistent and peaking at the right time, and it seems like we’re starting to hit our stride late in the season,” Gentile

“We’re a young team with only one senior, so finding that consistency can be a struggle at times. Spare-shooting has been our biggest weakness; but we’ve been working in practice a lot on that, and guys are improving. This is a good group, and they all get along and push each other. If one guy is down, someone else has stepped in and picked that guy up.”

Although the future looks bright for West since it only has one senior – Josh Pesavento – the squad has big hopes for the rest of its current season.

Pesavento, who’s joined on the team by his brother Matt, a junior, doesn’t plan to be the only Tiger to compete in the sectional, as he was a year

ago.

“Early in the year in tournaments, we were in the middle of the pack since we’d had some 900 games; but in our last tournament, we had some 1,080s or 1,100s,” Josh Pesavento said. “But I know that we can still improve since we usually have one bad game.

This is the point that we’ll turn it on since we have Lockport tomorrow, which is big for conference.

“I feel, like we gel pretty good with each other, and some of us hang out at each others’ houses. I think that we should do good in regionals. But we just have to execute our shots, and we can’t have a bunch of opens; we have to keep getting spares.

We just have to focus on one frame at a time, and we’ll be fine.”

West improved to 10-4 overall in dual meets Monday after it claimed a 3,094-2,813 nonconference victory over Plainfield Central at Town & Country.

Noah Plunge had a 268 high game and 741 series, while Josh Pesavento rolled a 237 high game and 669 series.

Kyle Branner led the Wildcats with a 247 high game and 641 series.

“My favorite thing about our team is that we’re really close and we usually pick each other up pretty well,” Tigers junior Scott Lyman said. “We used to have a couple of guys bowl good and a couple bowl not so good, but now we’re starting to bowl as a team and have everybody shooting a pretty high game, and that’s what we’ll have to do against Lockport.

“We go to each others’ houses on the weekend, so we’re just really close. We know each others’ favorite thing to do, and all have our inside jokes. I don’t think that we were that confident early on; but after we’ve been shooting scores in the thousands in almost every game, we’ve definitely gotten a lot better. I feel good about where we’re at right now.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Zach Auguste’s basket off an offensive rebound with 1:07 left helped No. 13 Notre Dame hold off No. 18 North Carolina, 71-70, on Monday night.

Auguste’s basket got the lead back for the Fighting Irish (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who had led by 11 points in the second half only to see the Tar Heels (11-4, 1-1) briefly push ahead late. Then Notre Dame survived two shots by preseason all-American Marcus Paige in the final seconds, the last a desperate 3-point heave that wasn’t close as the horn sounded.

Now Notre Dame is 3-0 in league play for the first time – Big East or ACC – and off to its best start in 15 seasons under Mike Brey.

Auguste finished with 18 points while Pat Connaughton had 16 for the Irish, who shot 46 percent and overcame their own cold shooting down the stretch to hang on.

Paige finished with 15 points for the Tar Heels, who shot 37 percent and couldn’t quite complete the comeback on a night when they struggled to get consistent defensive stops until the final 10 minutes. North Carolina missed 13 of 14 shots in the final 7-plus minutes to fall a basket short.

Kennedy Meeks hit two free throws with 2:07 left to give UNC a 70-69 lead – its first lead since 4-2 – and get the home crowd roaring.

But Auguste rebounded Connaughton’s missed shot and put it back in to get the lead back, snapping a run of eight straight misses and giving Notre Dame its first basket in more than 9 minutes.

Gasol scores 27, Butler has 22 as Bulls beat Rockets

CHICAGO – Pau Gasol had 27 points and 14 rebounds, Jimmy Butler scored 22 points and the Bulls won for the 13th time in 15 games, rallying to beat the Houston Rockets, 114105, on Monday night.

Derrick Rose added 19 points. Nikola Mirotic had 17, and the Bulls outscored the Rockets, 19-5, over the final 3:19.

Josh Smith led Houston with 21 points. James Harden scored 20, but the Rockets lost for the fourth time in six games.

Michigan State bounces back, 70-50, over Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State had its back to the wall and went back to playing “Izzo-ball” in the first half on Monday night.

The result was a 70-50 romp over Indiana, with Denzel Valentine and Branden Dawson bouncing back after subpar games and several teammates playing key roles.

Battling sickness, Valentine scored 15 points, 11 more than in a double-overtime loss to Maryland last Tuesday, and Dawson added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Spartans (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten).

“We pushed the ball a lot better and got open looks,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “But our defense was really what won us the game. And ‘B.J.’ (Dawson) was phenomenal.”

WASHINGTON – There’s no skunky bar odor amid the beer taps. Instead of booze, colored water fills the bottles.

The real alcohol is locked away but still close enough for the extra temptation of smell – and to test the safety of a new drug designed to help heavy drinkers say “when” sooner than usual.

The replica of a fully stocked bar inside the hospital at the National Institutes of Health is an important part of the experiment. Researchers believe sitting in the dimly lit bar-laboratory should cue the volunteers’ brains to crave a drink and help determine if the pill they’re testing counters that urge.

“The goal is to create almost a real-world environment but to control it very strictly,” said lead researcher Dr. Lorenzo Leggio, who is testing how a hormone named ghrelin that sparks people’s appetite for food also affects their desire for alcohol, and if blocking it helps.

Amid all the yearly resolutions to quit, alcohol use disorders affect about 17 million Americans, and only a small fraction receives treatment. There’s no onesize-fits-all therapy, and the NIH is spurring a hunt for new medications that target the brain’s addiction cycle in different ways – and to find out which options work best in which drinkers.

“Alcoholics come in many forms,” said Dr. George Koob, director of NIH’s National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, which has published new online guides, at www.niaaa.nih.gov, explaining who’s at risk and what can help.

At the bridge table, a short cut – a short suit – will make you wealthier if – an important if – you have a fit with partner.

Look at today’s North hand. After partner opens one spade, what should North respond?

If you count shortage points, add three for a singleton when you have at least a nine-card fit. So, the North hand is worth 11 support points, which is ideal for a three-spade limit raise.

If you count losers, the North hand has eight: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. (No suit has more than three losers.) Eight losers is also the number for a game-invitational limit raise.

Then South, who knows that his excellent diamond suit will provide discards, immediately uses Roman Key-Card Blackwood. North replies five hearts, showing two key-cards (two aces, or one ace and the trump king) and denying the trump queen. Now South knows that six spades is high enough.

West leads the club queen. What should declarer do?

The play ought to be straightforward. South should win with his club ace and draw two rounds of trumps.

When they break 3-1, he turns to diamonds, discarding dummy’s last two clubs as quickly as possible. Declarer ruffs his fourth diamond in the dummy, cashes the heart ace, trumps a heart back to hand and ruffs his remaining club in the dummy. Then he can claim, his hand containing two trumps and a high diamond. West takes only one trump trick. **

It is the same kind of discipline that works in people who have overactive bladder, a condition much more common than interstitial cystitis. While bladder training cuts down on the frequent urination, unfortunately it doesn’t reduce the pain of urination.

• ORAL MEDICATIONS. Pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron) is the only medication specifically approved for the treatment of interstitial cystitis. Other drugs not specifically approved for the condition also may offer relief. They include analgesics (pain relievers), tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines and H2 blockers used to treat heartburn.

• BLADDER DISTENTION. Sterile water is used to stretch the bladder. This may allow the bladder to hold more urine and interfere with pain signals transmitted by nerves in the bladder.

• BLADDER INSTILLATION (bladder wash).

The bladder is filled with a sterile solution containing one of a number of ingredients that work directly on the bladder wall to reduce inflammation and block pain. It may also prevent muscle contractions that cause pain, frequency and urgency of urination.

• ELECTRICAL NERVE STIMULATION. Mild electrical impulses are used to stimulate nerves to the bladder. The electrical pulses may increase blood flow to the bladder, strengthen pelvic muscles or trigger the release of substances that block pain.

Dear Doctor K: I have interstitial cystitis. Medications have helped, but not much. What else could help relieve my symptoms?

Dear Reader: Interstitial cystitis is a puzzling bladder condition in which the bladder wall becomes irritated or inflamed. We don’t know what causes the condition. Some doctors speculate that an infection, most likely with viruses, is responsible. However, I’m not aware of any good evidence in support of that.

The symptoms of interstitial cystitis are similar to those of a bacterial urinary tract infection.

However, in interstitial cystitis, there is no bacterial infection, and the symptoms do not respond to antibiotic treatment.

Symptoms include frequent urination, an intense urge to urinate and a burning sensation during urination. People may also experience pain, pressure or tenderness in the bladder area. In many patients, symptoms come and go. In others, symptoms continue to get worse.

In some people, interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that lasts for many years. In others, it disappears suddenly. But symptoms may return again, even years after the first illness.

There is no therapy that cures the disorder, so the goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms. Often a person needs to try several therapies before finding the right combination: • DIETARY CHANGES. Caffeinated beverages, alcohol, chocolate, and spicy or high-acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes are some of many foods that can aggravate the condition. Each person needs to experiment to discover what she or he needs to avoid. Smoking aggravates interstitial cystitis in some people, and quitting smoking can also help.

• BLADDER TRAINING. Patients can learn to reduce frequent urination by following a schedule for

Dear Abby: I was single for four years and recently remarried. I didn’t intend to marry again, but then I met “Bob.” He was so kind and attentive that I was attracted. He proposed to me every day, several times a day, and eight months later I married him.

Bob moved here from out of state and hasn’t been able to find work. It has been challenging. My daughter lives with us and is in college.

Bob’s mood swings have been drastic lately. He doesn’t want me to talk to anyone else, do anything without him (hang with my friends, my daughter, etc.).

I have a great job and work part-time in the evenings to make ends meet. I try to stay calm, but he yells, uses profanity and is highly manipulative.

I am at a loss. I would like to help him, but his depression is tearing us apart. I also believe he is addicted to marijuana. He has threatened suicide, but I don’t know if he would actually go through with it.

Abby, I have worked very hard to get where I am. I know I need to take care of myself and my daughter, but I don’t want to just throw this away, either. Help! –
