By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – History teacher David Belden has a bit of an obsession with the local history behind Lincoln Highway and Route 66.

So much so that every year in his Chicago History class at Minooka Community High School he has his students do a project on one of the highways. This year, he’s co-authored a book with fellow English teacher Christine O’Brien on the Lincoln Highway called “Images of America: The Lincoln Highway Across Illinois.”

“I always wanted to do a book on Route 66, but someone beat me to it,” Belden said. “So when they contacted me about a Lincoln Highway one, I suggested we do the entire Illinois area.”

The book was released Dec. 9 and is available for $21.99 on Amazon. com and at large book retail stores.

This is Belden’s sixth book with Arcadia publishing, all of which he has worked on in conjunction with his local history classes. The books all have dealt with digitizing historical pictures.

“I learned a lot about not only the road construction but the cultural and economic impact tied to the automobile,” Belden said. “This is the highway that really began it all.”

O’Brien has worked with Belden on previous books, but this is the first one she has co-authored.

O’Brien’s love for organizing and photography is what attracted her to take on a bigger role with this book.

“Years ago, [Belden] asked me to help proofread the Will County book for him, and since then, I have helped him edit, organize and assist with all of the other books,” O’Brien said in an email. “With ‘The Lincoln Highway Across Illinois,’ I became more involved with selecting images for the book and taking needed photographs from around the area. “ The book has more than 200 images of the historical highway. From southern Cook County to the Mississippi River, Lincoln Highway goes through numerous Chicago suburbs eventually heading west, according

“Conceived by entrepreneur Carl G. Fischer in 1912 and endorsed by businessman Henry B. Joy, the idea of creating an automobile-friendly roadway spanning America would soon change the nature of travel in the 20th century. ‘Lincoln Highway in Illinois’ defines and describes the role of the highway as it zigzags its way across the ‘Land of Lincoln’ and highlights the cities, towns and rural communities along its route,” according to the release.

The cover of the book features an old photo of the highway surrounded by fields and trees, not the gas stations, stores and industry that surround it today. It was chosen by O’Brien and shows an automobile along Lincoln Highway near Franklin Grove. The photo came from the University of Michigan.

“I knew the photo should be focused on the Lincoln Highway itself, and I thought it was important to see

a street sign with the name of the highway. The photo also shows old vehicles, open road and a lot of rural land, which clearly portrays how long the Lincoln Highway has been around,” she said.

As with his previous books, which have focused on Grundy County, Will County, Joliet, Princeton, and the Illinois and Michigan Canal, Belden’s local history students helped him research and digitize the more than 200 pictures in the book.

Belden said about 15 students from his local history class last school year worked on the book.

“They scanned (photos), entered research, organized and wrote, to some extent,” he said.

Because the road goes through areas close to them such as Joliet and Frankfort, the students identified with the project, he said.

Nicolette Krzywanos was a sophomore when she worked on the project and said she was able to become more familiar with the road that she has driven on before through the project.

Belden said he and his classes will be working on more books in the future and local brochures. The next project will be Joliet-themed.

Take precautions to avoid frostbite, hypothermia, officials warn

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When Mike Zaworski looked out his window Sunday, he joked that it seemed like he was looking at the North Pole.

Zaworski, of Joliet, was bunkered in his home with his family as the snow accumulated inch by inch in his neighborhood. He managed to free up his driveway twice with his snowblower and he helped other neighbors with their driveways until he ran out of energy. But the snow kept on coming.

“This is like a frozen tundra right here,” he said.

He decided to spend the rest of his Sunday afternoon relaxing with his family. When he looked at his backyard from inside, he said it seemed like the snowdrift was about a foot high.

Temperatures are expected to be steady between 15 to 19 degrees below zero, with wind chills as low as 35 to 45 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service.

On Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm and wind chill warning for the northern Illinois regions. Meteorologists expected heavy snow, with a total accumulation of 4 to 8 inches of snow in Will County.

Zaworski said he remembers the snowfall from about two years ago being worse than this season, with snowdrifts about 3 feet high.

Joe Polak, of Joliet, said he also remembers that same winter being worse. Everyone in the neighborhood was helping each other clear driveways and sidewalks, he said.

Before the weekend, Joliet city officials notified residents of warming shelters at Joliet public libraries, Louis Joliet shopping mall, Morningstar Mission and the Daybreak Center.

However, both libraries were closed Sunday because of the weather conditions. Dozens of public school districts in Will, Grundy, Kendall counties announced they

About 30 additional people took shelter at the Daybreak Center, said Glenn Van Cura, executive director of Joliet-based Catholic Charities, which runs the center.

The center is open 24 hours a day and typically houses 117 people who sign up for its services and work with a case manager, he said.

He said the center will be open Monday and more people may come as temperatures drop.

“We’ll probably be accepting people throughout the night,” he said.

Joliet city officials reminded residents to take precautions when going outside during winter storms and cold weather.

They should also watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia.

With frostbite, the skin becomes numb and appears white or pale.

The symptoms of hypothermia include slow or slurred speech, incoherence, uncontrollable shivering or drowsiness.

Officials have also said when residents are indoors they should shut off the water if the water pipes freeze. They should also cover any cracks around doors with materials such as rugs or towels.

Polak was able to head out for shopping despite the amount of snow on the ground, thanks to his Chrysler van. He said there wasn’t much of a crowd when he was out.

“A lot of people are probably figuring, ‘I don’t even want to go out in this weather’ so they just stay home,” he said. “If you don’t have to go out why go out?”

Evergreen Terrace lawyers want out of condemnation case

BY BOB OKON The Herald-News The lawyers for Evergreen Terrace have filed a motion to withdraw from the condemnation case, saying they have not been paid for their services and have been sued by the sister of the housing complex’s most well-known owner, Ronald Gidwitz.

The motion to withdraw is the latest sign that the defense may be unraveling as the legal fight enters its ninth year and Joliet continues to press its case to take over the 356-unit, low-income apartment complex.

The City Council is expected this week to vote on a settlement with tenants, who, along with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, were co-defendants with Evergreen Terrace owners when the trial started in October 2012. HUD settled with the city in November.

Evergreen Terrace in the 300 block of Broadway Street is a privately owned but federally subsidized housing complex for low-income residents. The city initiated its condemnation lawsuit in 2005, contending that mismanagement and neglect have led to crime and poor living conditions.

Lawyers for the Chicago law firm of Ungaretti & Harris declined to comment on the motion to withdraw from the federal case but the motion filed Tuesday states that “no fees have been paid to U&H for its trial work and significant sums remain unpaid for pre-trial work.”

The motion goes on to state Ungaretti & Harris recently was sued by Nancy Gidwitz, “the sister of Ronald J. Gidwitz and a person

with her own interest in the Evergreen Terrace Parties.”

Ronald Gidwitz, a prominent Illinois Republican and businessman who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2006 and formerly served as chairman of the State Board of Education, is the best known among the group that owns Evergreen Terrace.

Ungaretti & Harris says the lawsuit brought by Nancy Gidwitz “seriously complicates” the firm’s continued involvement in the case.

“U&H should not be forced to continue to represent the Evergreen Terrace Parties while at the same time defending a lawsuit filed by one of the owners of those clients,” the motion

states.

A spokeswoman for Evergreen Terrace owners declined to comment. Joliet City Attorney Jeff Plyman also declined to comment on the motion other than to say it will go to court for a hearing Jan. 10.

Both sides have had dissension in the ranks in recent weeks.

Joliet Councilman Robert O’Dekirk, a potential candidate for mayor in 2015, last month pointed to $2 million the city has spent on its own lawyers in the case and questioned whether the city should continue to pursue condemnation.

The case has wound its way to the U.S. Supreme Court to establish the city of

Joliet’s right to condemn a piece of property in which the federal government has an interest.

The presentation of evidence and testimony recently ended. But lawyers from both sides have been given until the end of February to present summaries of the facts and applicable law to U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle.

Even if Norgle rules in favor of Joliet, the case would then go to a jury to determine what price the city should pay for Evergreen Terrace. If the price is steep, the city council could be divided over whether it should move forward with taking over the property.

Grundy County director of technology retires Friday

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – J. P. Watters has served as the Grundy County director of technology since 2004, but the nine-year county employee recently announced he is retiring from the position.

“I have a retirement option that surfaced and it’s a wonderful opportunity so I’m going to take it,” Watters said.

Watter’s last day was Friday.

The Grundy County Technology/Elections Committee met Friday night in a special meeting to discuss what will happen with the vacant position, but was unable to reveal any details about the future of the county’s technology department at the time.

“He’s always been here and we think we’ll probably see him around every once and a while,” said Ron Severson, Grundy

County Board chairman.

“I suspect that when the siren goes at two o’clock in the morning, [Watters] will probably walk in here.”

The committee will recommend a plan for the position to the Personnel Committee at a future meeting. The Personnel Committee will review the plan and make further recommendations to the full county board.

Severson said it will be a few months before any action is taken in regards to the position.

Until then, Severson said the current technology department employees will “step up” and bear the extra workload.

Watters said he has full confidence in the technology department’s ability to continue without him.

“I believe the staff has a good plan, and the board, of course, has the final plan,” Watters said In 1997, Watters began

his career with the county as a contractor for the late Sheriff James Olson, but transitioned to Director of Technology in 2004.

During that time, Watters maintained and improved the county’s computing systems and assisted with elections, taxes and vital records.

“Basically, if the computers had wires on them, we were responsible to make them function,” Watters said. “We took it from computers with dial-up Internet to a corporate network with servers.”

Before working with the county, Watters owned a wireless company and had a 20-year career with ComEd. Watters said he had a positive experience while he was at the county.

“It’s a wonderful place.

The best asset is the people,” Watters said. “We have a great group of elected officials that work well together.”

Braidwood man was fine photographer

By DENISE M. BARAN-UNLAND The Herald-News Correspondent During the first week of Ryan Heitke’s leukemia treatments, his hospital window offered a view of Chicago.

“I asked him if he wanted his camera,” said Ryan’s father, Steve Heitke of Braidwood. “So he set it up to take some timed photos of the skylines. He also took some photos of his IV equipment and the names on the wall of the different hospital wings that were dedicated to someone, stuff of that nature.”

Lillie Heitke, Ryan’s mother, said her son posted some of those Ryan Heitke photos on Facebook.

“It’s amazing how many people looked at them,” she added.

Ryan’s zest for photography developed from the moment he grasped a Fisher-Price camera. As a boy, Ryan took pictures of his family, and as an adult, Ryan shot a few weddings but he especially enjoyed capturing inanimate objects.

“Something would just catch his eye, something we would take as nothing, and he’d be just beaming,” Lillie said. “He would drive places and find things he thought were interesting.”

For many years, Ryan used point-andshoot cameras. But six years ago, when Ryan began working at a Best Buy store in Joliet, he started buying higher-end photography equipment, Steve said.

Ryan’s parents hoped Ryan might pursue a photography career – and Ryan took some graphics arts classes hoping to eventually design video games, Steve said – but Ryan felt only wedding photographers made much money and explained that field already was saturated.

“He thought he should leave photography as a hobby,” Steve said, “although he easily could have sold the pictures he took of farmland, silos and other buildings.”

When he wasn’t fiddling with cameras, Ryan played video games online with his friends. Ryan was a wealth of technical information when it came to computers and camera equipment, but overall was

quiet and shy.

Or so his parents thought. However, people who knew Ryan in the work environment, first at Best Buy and then later when he was a clerk at Chicago Aerosol in Coal City, shared stories of a different Ryan with Steve and Lillie. Ryan was a person who grinned often and made people feel good about themselves.

“One girl that was having a rough time came in one morning and he had her favorite coffee ready for her with a little note, just to make her smile,” Lillie said.

In September, Ryan woke up with symptoms of a gall bladder attack. Subsequent tests revealed leukemia. Ryan was diagnosed Oct. 11, began treatment six days later and endured two more hospitalizations. He died Nov. 25 at the age of 26.

During most of his illness, Ryan’s camera equipment sat home, unused.

“He was just too weak,” Lillie said. “It got to the point where he could only take a few pictures on his cellphone.”

A chance for redemption Joliet School District 204 optimistic about innovative counseling program

By TINA AKOURIS The Herald-News JOLIET – All Nicole Gore could do was stare at the phone in disbelief.

“Ishmael? You mean, my Ishmael?” she said.

Her son, Ishmael Ottman, a junior at Joliet West High School, was in trouble. The October incident that prompted the phone call had occurred in the school cafeteria.

A student was bothering one of Ottman’s cousin’s friends, so Ottman intervened.

“He threatened me, but he also threatened my life,” Ottman said. “I got up and got into his face, and I pushed him onto the table. Then I went to the dean.”

Gore said that when the dean called her, she thought it was a joke.

“I was caught offguard,” she said. “He was never really in any trouble, ever. It was always just typical kid stuff. He’s always been my gentle giant.”

But the incident resulted in Ottman getting an expulsion warning.

Because it was his first offense, he had the option of attending a counseling program the school district implemented the previous school year in a partnership with the Joliet Region Interfaith Educational Council.

“I am very quiet around new people,” Ottman said.

“But my sister said to just give it a chance. Now I feel like a new person.”

Thompson said the PSC deals with students who have been involved in serious incidents such as fighting, substance abuse, and verbal confrontations and threats to staff and other students.

He said about 58 students have gone through the program.

The student and his or her parents/guardians participate in four, onehour sessions at the Joliet Township High School District 204 administration building. Thompson leads each session, which

includes an invited guest of the student’s choosing and a volunteer from the community.

“During the third meeting, we talk about the issue that got them into trouble,” Thompson said.

“This is about building relationships and making sure that the walls have to come down. What is beneath the surface?”

At the fourth session, the group discusses coping mechanisms for the student so the negative behavior is not repeated, he said.

“Our last meeting is also with the dean (of students), and the dean signs off on it,” Thompson said. “(The student) is asked to follow up with that per-

son.”

He said only one person has the floor at a time, and Thompson uses a beat-up Nerf ball to pass around the table to indicate a participant’s turn to speak.

“A lot of this comes from the Native American Indians and Aboriginal sect in Australia,” Thompson said. “They’d sit in a circle and pass around a peace pipe. The circle represents unity, oneness and peace. ... A ball is used here instead.

It’s a talking piece.”

Matt Zambrano is a community volunteer for PSC along with his wife, Marisa. But Matt Zambrano didn’t know about PSC until Marisa told him he was going to one

of Thompson’s sessions.

The couple have three children, one of whom is a Joliet West graduate and a freshman at Brown University.

“We raised our kids in Joliet, and I am very passionate about the Joliet schools,” Marisa Zambrano said. “I dragged my husband to the first meeting because I had never heard about this program before. You make one mistake and these kids are labeled, and they need to redeem themselves. Teens just want someone to sit and listen to what they have to say.”

Ottman agrees. He said that was the driving factor for him in improving his behavior after the caf-

eteria incident.

“I ended up having a stronger connection with my siblings, and even my brother’s girlfriend gives me awesome advice, too,” he said. “She tells me she loves me, and it’s nice to have someone there for me.”

Community volunteers such as Matt Zambrano want to give troubled students the hope that there’s something better in life for them. Zambrano, who was at first reluctant to get involved in PSC, gives students his life experiences — and being involved in PSC is helpful to him, too, he said.

“I can open up to these kids and give them my life experiences — they can either take it or leave it,” he said. “When you can make a connection with a kid, that’s the most gratifying thing, to impact someone’s life.”

Gore is appreciative of District 204 for placing Ottman in PSC because it has brought her closer to her son. Gore said she can’t help getting caught up in work, and sometimes her children have had to “raise themselves.”

“But I think we are closer now, and I can put time to the side for him,” Gore said. “I feel selfish sometimes because I want our little time together.”

Thompson said there are about 70 volunteers signed up for PSC this school year, but there’s always the need for more.

“Our aim is to tell these kids that they have a future and a hope,” he said.

“We tell them, ‘You are somebody.’”

Airport, Illiana Expressway top county’s agenda

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Board Speaker Herbert Brooks Jr., D-Joliet, thinks a south suburban airport will create much-needed jobs as well as make air travel more convenient to those living in the area.

“I can’t wait to buy my first ticket,” Brooks said.

The proposed construction of the south suburban airport near Peotone is one of the top issues in the 2014 state legislative agenda the Will County Board recently approved. Brooks said the board “as a whole” supports the construction of the south suburban airport.

Gov. Pat Quinn in July signed legislation giving the Illinois Department of Transportation the power to build the airport. State officials project the airport will create about 25,000 jobs, including 14,000 jobs once it is operational.

The Will County Board recently formed an Airport Committee to act as a clearinghouse in evaluating airport information as well as a link between IDOT, eastern Will County officials and residents, and the board. The committee meets at 8:30 a.m. the first Thursday of every month in the county board committee room.

IDOT has produced an airport master plan for the south suburban airport that is now under review by the Federal Aviation Administration. The airport site comprises about 5,800 acres, but could eventually encompass about 20,000 acres, including land necessary for access roads and noise abatement.

Brooks said he also supports the Illiana Expressway, a proposed 50mile highway stretching from I-65 in Indiana to I-55 near Wilmington in southern Will County. He said the proposed highway would do much to reduce traffic congestion

“Truck traffic on Route 53 is especially horrendous,” he said.

“The board has worked diligently to monitor the progress of these two projects, and we will continue to work collaboratively with the state and the local stakeholders most directly impacted by both,” Howard said in a statement. “We want to make sure the voices of residents, municipalities, the agricultural community, businesses, and others are heard when critical decisions are made in the months and years to come.”

Republican chair Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said the county board is trying to be “proactive in reaching out to our elected officials and sharing our residents’ stories with them, so the right path is taken for the sake of our economy, job creation, and the quality of life here.”

Heating costs expected to rise

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com When it comes to cutting down on winter heating costs, Jim Chilsen recommends not making your home work harder than necessary to make you comfortable.

Chilsen, Citizens Utility Board spokesman, said there are many little things people can do that can make a big difference on their gas bill. The board, a nonprofit organization that represents utility customers’ interests, knows several ways customers can save on energy.

“Nobody would say their gas bills are low,” he said.

“While it’s good news that gas prices have been relatively stable in the last few years, people are still struggling to pay their energy costs. Practicing energy efficiency at home is still a necessity.”

In fact, the U.S. Energy Information Administration is predicting the cost of heating a home in the Midwest with natural gas will increase almost 12 percent this winter, while remaining the most cost-effective option.

The average household in the Midwest will spend $713 heating a home with natural gas from October through March, compared with $974 for homes heated with electricity and $1,584 for those heated with propane, according to the administration’s December forecast. Last year, the average Midwest household spent $638 heating a home with natural gas, $955 heating a home with electricity, and $1,333 heating a home with propane.

No matter the energy source, customers can cut costs by buying a programmable thermostat that will adjust home temperature automatically at different times throughout the day. People can save up to 3 percent on their heating bill for each degree lowered on the thermostat, according to the board.

Ways to save energy this winter • Buy a programmable thermostat.

• Close doors to unused rooms and blinds to windows at night.

• Reduce cold air drafts in doors, windows, pipes and fans.

• Make sure the home is well-insulated, especially the attic.

• Set water heater to 120 degrees and cover it with an insulating blanket.

• Clear radiators, registers, air returns and baseboards of dust and furniture.

• Use Compact Fluorescent Light or LED bulbs in your home.

• Circulate the heat with a ceiling fan. Run the fan clockwise to pull warm air down.

One of the most effective ways people can conserve on heating is by sealing windows, said Julian Hammond, owner of Joliet-based Home Heat Air and Appliance Service. He said if people don’t have double-pane windows, they should seal it with plastic.

He also recommended people buy a rubber sweep for doors or replace old ones. When it comes to furnace units, the filters should be changed once a month as well as cleaned and inspected every year, he said.

“That’s basically just for safety concerns and product longevity,” he said. “Some people will run it ’til it breaks.

They won’t clean it. When I come out there’s usually compound issues.”

Other ways people can save on energy is keeping a home well-insulated by not only blocking cold air from doors and windows but fans, vents and plumbing underneath sinks.

Close doors to rooms that are not in use and clear radiators, registers, air returns, baseboards and furniture of dust and other obstacles.

One commonly held myth about gas utility companies is that they cannot turn off the service during the winter season. Companies can shut off service if temperatures are expected to stay higher than 32 degrees for the next 24 hours.

“If people are behind on

their bills, they shouldn’t think they’ll get a break in the winter,” Chilsen said.

For their part, ComEd officials offer financial assistance programs to customers struggling with electricity bills, such as Residential Special Hardship grants, ComEd Helps Active Military Personnel and Non-Profit Special Hardship programs. Details on who qualifies for these assistance programs are available through their website at ComEd.com.

Paul Callighan, ComEd spokesman, said that the average monthly bill for a residential customer on the ComEd energy rate is about $73. For customers who use Nicor Gas Co., the current gas costs is 40 cents a therm this month, compared to 45 cents a therm for December 2012, according to their website.

Another myth customers have on energy costs is that nothing can be done to cut the costs. Chilsen pointed out people can use cubenergysaver. com, which can give customers money-saving plans for free.

He said if people are in danger of losing their heating service during the winter, they can contact the Citizens Utility Board and have their rights as a customer explained, along with access to the necessary resources.

“The No. 1 part of being a utility customer is knowing your rights,” he said.

Plainfield officials: Village’s strategic plan on track

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village officials say residents can expect Plainfield to stay on track with community linkage and infrastructure improvement in the second year of its 5-year strategic plan this year.

Village officials also will be planning construction on the Interstate 55 interchanges at Route 30 and Route 126-Lockport Street, and preparing for businesses to come and expand operations as Plainfield continues growing.

The strategic plan was adopted by the village during the summer and includes four major areas of development: transportation and community connections, business and

retail development, community life and identity, and village infrastructure.

Long-term goals have been set out within each of these key areas. But within each area, Village Administrator Brian Murphy said specific action items will be worked on for 2014.

“Our goals for next year are to continue implementing a number of the initiatives,” Murphy said, pointing out helping businesses expand and communities come together as major areas of improvement.

“The last number of years, we have been in rather challenging times both from our own finances, and as a community the growth has been rather limited,” Murphy said. “So now that we’re seeing developers and development

begin to express interest in our community, we can help with that.”

Murphy said businesses are starting to notice Plainfield as a destination for their headquarters.

The village will continue to help find spaces for companies like Vintage Tech, a waste and recycling management company that moved its operations from Romeoville, and existing companies that want to expand.

Mayor Michael Collins is scheduled to discuss plans for business growth and outlook of the city in his State of the Village address, scheduled for Jan. 15 at the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce Luncheon.

Residential growth is up as well, with about 140 permits submitted.

That’s why Murphy said the first priority is the community linkage pathway network, which

is aimed to connect neighborhoods and break down the separate identities of north, south, east and west Plainfield.

Village officials also are working on specific tasks this year that will build off last year’s work and help complete the strategic plan’s vision for 2018.

Along with discussing transportation plans with representatives from the surrounding communities, village officials plan to work on safe pedestrian and bike paths, develop plans for a PACE bus depot, deter Plainfield truck traffic, and find ways to alleviate traffic at heavily congested areas, including downtown.

To define and improve Plainfield’s identity, the village has already sought

and received in October a designation of the Downtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The village will continue to work on relocating the French Market to the riverfront.

The village decided to not create a TIF district along Route 30, but officials are still planning to look at locations for a hotel or business center along Route 59 or 30.

Village staff also continue to encourage discussions with the Plainfield Park District, the four Plainfield-serving school boards and the Riverfront Foundation.

Community pulls together

By KRIS STADALSKY The Herald-News correspondent Last year was a difficult time for many, but the people of Channahon, Minooka and surrounding communities rallied to help out in so many ways.

It’s particularly heartwarming to see both adults and students from our schools taking on projects to be a part of the ongoing solution. Here are just a few highlights and recaps of people helping people in times of need during 2013:

Drivers stuff a bus Bus drivers and transportation employees from Minooka Community Grade School District 201 and Minooka Community High School District 111 joined forces after the November tornadoes and

decided to stuff a school bus with food and needed items for our neighbors in Coal City, Diamond and Washington.

The combined transportation department stuffed five buses, two trailers and one truck full of canned and boxed goods, bottled water, clothes, blankets, towels, baby items, personal toiletries, warm clothing, flashlights, batteries ... the list goes on.

The entire community lent a hand in this one after a flier went out via the grade school’s email system.

The response was overwhelming, Minooka Grade School Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.

Bus drivers participated in sorting, boxing and labeling everything, driver Jennifer Kopstain said.

Then 14 of them took the

donations to the people in need.

Joliet director’s new film reflects his strong faith

By FRANK VAISVILAS For The Herald-News JOLIET – An inspirational, faith-based film that was shot mostly in Joliet is scheduled to be released Jan. 28 on DVD by Lionsgate Films.

“Dreams” is the story of four people who seek to overcome their pasts and achieve their dreams in unusual and emotionally trying circumstances.

Its director, Joel Kapity of Joliet said during its premiere at a theater outside of Detroit that many audience members left the theater with tears in their eyes, which is the effect he hoped for in making the movie.

He said the film forces people to talk about the situations portrayed and offers tools to heal and forgive.

“We didn’t want it to be cheesy,” Kapity said. “So many faith-based films aren’t real.”

One character in the movie is a singer who’s confronting the psychological damage from being sexually abused by her father, while another character is a former gang member who’s trying to lead a law-abiding life after prison. The other main characters are a dancer and a boxing trainer trying to reconnect with his daughter after a life on drugs.

One cast member is from Joliet, Joseph Awinongya, who plays the trainer, Paalo, a character close to who he is in real life. Awinongya recently sold his gym in Joliet,

Awinongya left his home country of Ghana, where his daughter was born, to pursue a boxing career in the U.S. with Don King in 1999.

In recent years, he has been trying to reconnect with his 14-year-old daughter. And also like Paalo, Awinongya runs the gym as an outlet to keep kids off the street and out of trouble.

ie. In the film, Adama is training for a championship match. In real life, he’s now training to challenge middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on Feb. 1 in Monte Carlo.

Awinongya said the film is very emotional.

“I don’t like watching myself [on the screen],” he said. “But for this movie, I sat down and cried.”

Kapity said “Dreams” was developed over 10 years, starting from a conversation with his best friend, Marchello Lee, who plays the dancer in the film.

He said one of the biggest obstacles to making the film was raising money for its nearly $250,000 budget. But investors gradually began providing the funds he needed.

Although he considers “Dreams” a faith-based film, it is not overtly Christian and people of other faiths will enjoy it, Kapity said. But he took its messages about forgiveness and faith from the Bible.

“I believe this film leads you to God,” Kapity said.

“Dreams” is the second film for the 32-year-old director. His first, “Blessed and Cursed,” is a Christian gospel movie that was released in 2010.

Kapity said he’s a fan of some non-Christian films but believes his purpose is to direct faith-based films.

“Life is short,” he said.

“Everything I do, I want it to lead people to God. Otherwise, it doesn’t feel like it’s worth doing.”

City manager weighs options for prison redevelopment

Hock is expected to tour the prison sometime in January with state Sen. Patrick McGuire and probably someone from the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

McGuire said the Illinois Department of Corrections is arranging the tour at his request.

McGuire, who has joined the efforts to redevelop the prison, said he thought the new city manager should get inside.

“I want him to see it with his own eyes,” McGuire said.

The Joliet prison has some fame as a place name in old movies about Chicago crime and more recently as the setting for the opening scene of “The Blues Brothers.”

The parking lot just outside the warden’s office and prison walls features sign boards that tell of the history of the Joliet Correctional Center and the prisoners held there. But there is no access inside the prison.

The Joliet City Council renewed the parking lot arrangement with the state last month for another five years.

Mayor Thomas Giarrante said there is a business interested in using the prison site.

“The problem is the initial cost to make it safe is $3.8 million,” Giarrante said.

The state owns the prison but has not made any serious effort to pursue redevelopment.

Hock wants to find out if limited redevelopment of the prison would be more economical and, thus, more likely.

Aux Sable students start business, help hungry

By TINA AKOURIS The Herald-News Natalie Sipes and Riley Mulcahy were sitting around with their families talking about how to help those less fortunate.

It was a brainstorming session that eventually gave the two eighth-grade girls an idea that would benefit a lot more than just a few people.

The idea was to start a tutoring business. But the profits from the business aren’t going into the girls’ pockets or to just a few people who need a hand.

Instead, the money will go toward helping more than 100 children and their families get some food on their table.

The Creekside Cares charity helps hungry students in Plainfield School District 202 schools. Each week volunteers provide non-perishable foods to the students, and in the summer the charity also provides school supplies.

“We were trying to figure out what charities to [help[ and at first we looked into the Makea-Wish Foundation, but we realized our money would be more beneficial to a small local charity,” Mulcahy said.

The girls, who attend Aux Sable Middle School, needed a month to get the tutoring business off the ground. They printed fliers, made business cards, created a website and sent out emails.

“We have worked really hard on this and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments,” Sipes said. “I got emails and texts from friends about how much of a good job I am doing.

People are going to look up to you if you make a difference.”

Jeffrey Peterson started the Creekside Cares backpack food charity and is a physical education and health teacher at Creekside School in Plainfield. Peterson said when he found out that the girls were going to donate their profits to Creekside Cares, he felt very grateful.

“It’s been my mission to increase awareness in various ways through food drives and fundraising of different sorts,” Peterson said. “I think it is admirable for these two girls to want to give back to the students at Aux Sa-

ble, because we do service some students there and throughout District 202.

“I was very humbled and appreciative that they agreed to give of their talents and help those who are in need.”

Peterson said he first met Natalie Sipes’ mother, Becky, over the summer when she was shopping at a local grocery store. Natalie Sipes said her mother became intrigued with what was in Peterson’s grocery cart.

“He bought a whole cartful of mac and cheese and she was wondering

what he was doing,” Sipes said. “That’s how she got involved.”

But nothing really took off until early September.

Natalie Sipes went to Peterson and told him she was starting the tutoring business with Mulcahy and that all the proceeds would go to Peterson’s charity.

Peterson said Creekside Cares helps 160 children in the Plainfield School District each week, but many people don’t think there is a hunger problem in the area.

“They think because

we are close to Naperville there isn’t a problem, and maybe they have their blinders on [but[ it is happening in our community,” Peterson said. “Food insecurity is invisible.

Kids are coming to school hungry and it is affecting their ability to learn.

They go to the nurse and most of the time they say they’ve eaten nothing, or ‘My family split a mac and cheese.’ I really wanted to help make a bigger impact on these students.”

Sipes and Mulcahy aren’t just learning how to help those less fortunate.

They are learning what it takes to run a business.

“You have to put yourself out there,” Mulcahy said. “If you are too shy and you can’t really do interviews and can’t put the word out, it’s a lot harder.”

The girls tutor in Algebra I, and any student at a K-8 level in English, language arts, social studies and science. They charge $10 an hour for students who attend the district’s “Blue House” schools.

Arguments on surveillance heard in terrorism case

By MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press CHICAGO – A terrorism suspect’s attorney argued Friday that a Chicago judge can restore “lost faith” in the judicial system by ordering the government to disclose whether it used the kind of expanded U.S. surveillance revealed by Edward Snowden against his client.

The impassioned comments came in U.S District Court during a rare open hearing regarding evidence that may have been gleaned from phone and Internet spying – an issue that jurists have been increasingly forced to grapple with in the wake of leaks by former government contractor Snowden.

“Step up and say, ‘The time has come,’ ” defense attorney Thomas Durkin said, appearing to challenge U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman.

Mandating the disclosures, he added, “would go a long way toward restoring lost faith (in the justice system)

in this country.”

The defendant at issue in Friday’s hearing was Adel Daoud, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen from suburban Chicago who denies allegations that he took a phony car bomb from an undercover FBI agent in 2012, parked it by a downtown Chicago bar and pressed a trigger. His trial is scheduled to begin April 7.

At the end of 2013, a federal judge in Manhattan upheld the legality of the phone records collection program, while another federal judge in Washington, D.C., earlier concluded it was likely not constitutional.

But the judge in Chicago took pains to say Friday not to expect such an expansive opinion from her when she rules in Daoud’s case in the coming days.

“I’m not sure my ruling will be that grandiose,” she said, responding to Durkin’s call for her to restore faith in the judiciary.

She did not say when she would issue the ruling.

Another Daoud attorney, Josh Herman, said some documents turned over by prosecutors, including emails dated 2011,

seemed to support defense attorneys’ claim that warrantless surveillance was used on Daoud.

“This is not tin foil hat paranoia,” Herman said.

But prosecutor William Ridgway said the

2011 emails may have been found on Daoud’s computer that authorities seized with a warrant in 2012.

If the government did target Daoud only after sifting through communications data without a warrant, the defense wants to challenge all subsequent evidence on the grounds it was gathered through a violation of Daoud’s constitutional rights against unreasonable searches.

Prosecutors have agreed they must notify terrorism defendants if they plan to use evidence derived directly from enhanced surveillance at trial. However, they say they don’t plan to use any such evidence at Daoud’s trial and, therefore, aren’t obliged to say one way or another if they used the surveillance programs.

Daoud’s attorneys say the government’s refusal to clearly confirm or deny that it used the programs leaves them hamstrung: With no answer, they can’t mount a credible constitutional challenge.

Comment period ending on Illinois ‘fracking’ rules The ASSOCIATED PRESS CARBONDALE – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources planned to accept public comments through Friday on its proposed rules to govern the high-volume oil and gas extraction method known as “fracking,” then decide in the coming weeks if it will make changes based on that feedback, officials said.

A coalition of environmental and community groups that opposes fracking said Friday they had delivered 18,000 comments to the DNR; agency spokesman Chris McCloud said it had received 5,000 comments online as of Wednesday. Residents also were permitted to mail in comments and many spoke at public hearings held in November and December.

Fracking – short for hydrau-

lic fracturing – uses a high-pressure mixture of water, sand and chemicals to crack and hold open thick rock formations, releasing trapped oil and gas. Combined with horizontal drilling, it allows access to formerly out-of-reach deposits. Supporters say it will create thousands of jobs, but opponents fear it could pollute water resources.

The state’s first-ever fracking regulations, negotiated with the

help of some environment and industry groups, were hailed as the toughest in the nation when they were signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn last summer. The DNR, which will enforce them, must adopt rules to reflect the law and published a first draft in November.

But opponents complain that the DNR’s proposed rules are inadequate and rushed, in some cases weakening the regulations

passed by lawmakers. They planned to deliver a petition Friday to the governor, asking him to form a council of several state agencies, including emergency responders and transportation officials, to help rewrite the rules.

Energy companies hope to begin fracking this year in the New Albany Shale formation in southern Illinois where they hope significant oil deposits lie 5,000 feet or more below the surface.

Kerry: U.S. will support Iraq, but without troops

By DEB RIECHMANN The Associated Press JERUSALEM – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that the United States will support Iraq’s fight against al-Qaidalinked militants who have overrun two cities but won’t send in American troops.

Kerry said the militants are trying to destabilize the region and undermine a democratic process in Iraq and that the U.S. is in contact with tribal leaders in Anbar province who are standing up to the terrorists.

But, he said, “this is a fight that belongs to the Iraqis. That is exactly what the president and the world decided some time ago when we left Iraq, so we are not obviously contemplating returning. We are not contemplating putting boots on the ground. This is their fight. ... We will help them in their fight, but this fight, in the end, they will

Al-Qaida linked gunmen have largely taken over the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in an uprising that has been a blow to the Shiite-led government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bombings in the Iraqi capital Baghdad killed at least 20 people Sunday.

Anbar, a vast desert area on the borders with Syria and Jordan, was the heartland of the Sunni insurgency that rose up against American troops and the Iraqi government after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

In 2004, insurgents in Fallujah killed four American security contractors,

hanging their burned bodies from a bridge. Ramadi and other cities have remained battlegrounds as sectarian bloodshed has mounted with Shiite militias killing Sunnis.

“We are very, very concerned about the efforts of al-Qaida and the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant, which is affiliated with al-Qaida, who are trying to assert their authority not just in Iraq but in Syria,” Kerry said.

“These are the most dangerous players in that region. Their barbarism against the civilians in Ramadi and Fallujah and against Iraqi security forces is on display for everyone in the world to see.”

Kerry made the comments as he left Jerusalem for talks with leaders in Jordan and Saudi Arabia about his Mideast peace-making efforts after three days of lengthy meetings with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Kerry said some progress was made in what he described as “very serious, very intensive conversations,” but key hurdles are yet to be overcome.

His talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh covered the peace process, Syria and Iraq.

After his short stay in Amman, Kerry flew to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and then took a 30-minute helicopter ride to King Abdullah’s desert palace.

The Saudi leader developed an initiative in 2002 in which the Arab world offered comprehensive peace with Israel in exchange for a full pullout from all territories it captured in the 1967 Mideast war.

The initiative, revolutionary when it was introduced, has been endorsed by the Arab League and, technically, remains in effect.

“Saudi Arabia’s initiative holds out the prospect that if the parties could arrive at a peaceful resolution, you could instantaneously have peace between the 22 Arab nations and 35 Muslim nations, all of whom have said they will recognize Israel if peace is achieved,” Kerry said.

“Imagine how that changes the dynamics of travel, of business, of education, of opportunity in this region, of stability. Imagine what peace could mean for trade and tourism, what it could mean for developing technology and talent, for job opportunities for the younger generation, for generations in all of these countries,” Kerry said.

Kerry said after his meeting with the Saudi leader that the king said he supported Kerry’s peace efforts and the Abdullah’s initiative “has been part of the framework that we’ve been piecing together – both in inspiration and substance.”

NEWS BRIEFS Iraqi troops, al-Qaida militants battle kills 34 BAGHDAD – The Iraqi military tried to dislodge al-Qaida militants in Sunni-dominated Anbar province Sunday, unleashing airstrikes and besieging the regional capital in fighting that killed at least 34 people, officials said.

A series of bombs in Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad, meanwhile, killed at least 20 people.

The recent gains by the insurgents have been a blow to the Shiite-led government – as sectarian violence has escalated since the U.S. withdrawal. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington

was “very, very concerned” by the fighting but would not send in American troops.

Video of the airstrikes in Anbar – apparently taken by aircraft at night – was released by Iraq’s Defense Ministry showing al-Qaida hideouts being bombarded. It showed men gathered around a vehicle, then running away as the site was struck.

A ministry statement said the air force struck a militants’ hideout overnight, identifying them as belonging to the al-Qaida-linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, which the government refers to as “terrorists.”

The army and allied tribesmen also fought al-Qaida militants around the provincial capital of Ramadi on Sunday, two Anbar government officials told The Associated Press by telephone. They said 22 soldiers and 12 civilians were killed, along with an unknown number of militants, and 58 people were wounded. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Pope to travel to Holy Land, Jordan in May VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis says his upcoming trip to the Holy Land

aims to boost relations with Orthodox Christians. But the three-day visit in May also underscores Francis’ close ties to the Jewish community, his outreach to Muslims and the Vatican’s longstanding call for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

The announcement was made Sunday just as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrapped up three days of talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a new U.S. bid for peace.

Francis told thousands gathered in the rain for his weekly Sunday blessing that he would visit Amman, Bethlehem and Jerusalem on May 24 through 26. It is the only papal trip

confirmed so far for 2014 and the second foreign trip of Francis’ pontificate, following his 2013 visit to Brazil for World Youth Day. Francis, an Argentine Jesuit, will be the fourth pope to visit the Holy Land after Paul VI’s landmark visit in 1964.

In his Christmas address, Francis singled out the Holy Land for prayers, saying “Bless the land where you chose to come into the world, and grant a favorable outcome to the peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.”

Area officials remain positive after Dominick’s leaves market

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Officials in Joliet and Shorewood are remaining positive in the face of the closure of Dominick’s stores in their communities.

The stores at 2318 Essington Road in Joliet and 435 Weber Road in Romeoville are two of 57 Dominick’s stores across the Chicago area that closed their doors Dec. 28. Another 15 Dominick’s stores are being purchased by either Jewel-Osco or Mariano’s. Dominick’s parent company, Safeway, in October announced its plans to leave the Chicago market.

While there is no buyer yet for the Dominick’s stores in Joliet and Romeoville, Mariano’s has announced that it is purchasing the Dominick’s store at 950 Brook Forest Av. in Shorewood.

Shorewood Community Development Director Karen James said she

is excited to see Mariano’s will take over the spot. That Dominick’s store opened in 2001.

She anticipated that Mariano’s will open in the next couple of months. The Dominick’s store is scheduled to remain open until Jan. 25.

“It has an excellent location with the intersection of Route 30 and Black Road,” James said. “They (Dominick’s) were really the first thing we had at that intersection.

At one point, Dominick’s was one of our top 10 sales producers.”

According to Mariano’s website, the store’s pharmacy will open Jan. 26, with the store’s opening date expected to be announced soon. Mariano’s is owned by Wisconsin-based Roundy’s Inc., which operates 163 retail grocery stores and 101 pharmacies under the Pick ’n Save, Rainbow, Copps, Metro Market and Mariano’s names in Illinois, Minne-

sota and Wisconsin.

The former Dominick’s store on Essington Road in Joliet was built 15 to 18 years ago as part of a new commercial development, according to city officials. Kendall Jackson, Joliet’s planning and economic development director, said the building would be well suited if another grocery store moved into the space.

“It is a fairly good commercial corner with good traffic counts,” Jackson said. “I think that area could support another grocery store.”

But James Haller, Joliet’s community and economic development director, noted that “the grocery business is very, very competitive.”

“There are a lot of grocery opportunities for the consumer,” he said, pointing out the presence of other grocery stores such as Jewel, Aldi and Food For Less in the area.

Understanding the difference between the sell-by, use-by and bestif-used-by dates at your local supermarket can save your family from recurring illnesses and food poisoning affecting 48 million people each year, according to the USDA. What’s inside your refrigerator? It looks good, it smells good and it tastes good, but bacteria that makes us sick doesn’t change smell, taste or appearance. Though we can’t protect ourselves in every situation, how we care for what we buy can keep us from a lot misery.

After four days of medical hospitality for food poisoning, I decided to review my hectic lifestyle of eating out, carry-out and grocery shopping to reeducate myself.

At various grocery delis I was reminded the fresh lunch meat stamped date is the date you buy it; the food is good for four to five days after, except for chicken, turkey and bologna, which is good for three to four days. On mayo salads, creamy desserts and sauces, generally use in a three to four day window. There’s bonus time with packaged vacuumed-sealed foods, usually seven to eight days.

In the meat department, allow more leeway time before the store’s sell

date, in which food is usually good for 2 to 3 days after. Watch ground meats, especially chicken and turkey, which can spoil in two to four days.

For quality eggs, use the packaging date not the use-by date. The difference from packaging to tossing should be no longer than four to five weeks. The shorter best-if-used date is recommended for best flavor and peak quality.

Consumers can maintain safety of dairy products by selecting pasteurized labeled items sufficiently before the use-by date, picking them up just before checking out. Once home, refrigerate at 40 degrees, putting milk in the coldest, darkest, back part of the shelf and never in the door as milk is affected by light. Please, don’t pour unused milk back into the bottle because you may be inviting bacteria infections.

For the budget conscious, it’s OK to freeze milk so long as you do it before the sell-by date. Flavor and texture, however, may be affected.

Bacteria’s effect can be felt in hours or sometimes not for weeks. Less than an ounce of prevention starts 2014 off right. For a safe, effective sanitizing solution combine one teaspoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water. Use it to sanitize countertops, appliances and to rinse off any invisible bacteria clinging to the outside layer of fruits and vegetables. It’s nature’s magic.

LETTERS Decries bombing in Israel To the Editor: As an Ahmadi Muslim, I condemn the Dec. 22 bombing on a public bus near Tel Aviv. Islam categorically rejects violence and the taking of innocent lives. The Quran states, “if any one killed an innocent person ... it would be as if he killed all of mankind.”

Furthermore, there is no place for vigilante justice in Islam. It is stated in the Quran, “Those who give in times of both ease and hardship, those who control their rage and pardon other people, God loves the good-doers.”

Violence accomplishes nothing but rather creates an atmosphere of disdain and distrust among people.

Dialogue is preferred over revenge and violence. I pray that all those involved choose dialogue to accom-

plish their goals.

Do whatever you want To the Editor: It seems that everyone is against smoking, but many states have legalized marijuana, which, while used in several ways, is mostly smoked. Seems like we’re dealing with an oxymoron here.

Marijuana is also an intoxicant, and while not alone with this quality, is now responsible for an substantial rise in DUI cases.

In Illinois, the Legislature has chosen to increase the speed limit on major highways to 70 mph, the rationale being that motorists routinely violate the 65 mph limit. “Speed kills” seems

to not apply here. Another oxymoron, it seems.

Also, it appears that anyone from a wealthy family may commit almost any crime and use the defense of “affluenza.”

It seems that a teenager in Texas was convicted of drunken driving — with the defense arguing that because he comes from a wealthy family he was never taught the difference between right and wrong. The judge bought the defense and sentenced him to probation but no jail time.

The state of the union apparently is that our governments, federal and state, have decided that their citizens should be able to do what they want, when they want and how they want.

The 6-foot-6 forward returned to action during the York Christmas Tournament and Saturday’s victory over the Hilltoppers was his fifth consecutive start.

Since his comeback, Boykin has showed little signs of rust.

PLANO – Three of the four local boys basketball coaches who participated in the 51st annual Plano Christmas Classic enter 2014 happy with their team’s most recent performances.

Morris, Newark and Seneca all outplayed their seeds at the tournament, which wrapped up earlier this week. Sixth-seeded Morris finished second, eighth-seeded Seneca was fifth and 13th-seeded Newark, which did not get a first-round bye, placed seventh. Third-seeded Coal City was the one exception to the local success, finishing eighth.

The one negative for Morris is that it exited the tournament, and thus enters the unofficial second half of the season, on a sour note. Top-seeded Ottawa defeated the Redskins, 68-50, in the championship game late Monday night.

Morris coach Joe Blumberg was asked if the tournament was still a net positive after the loss.

after rehabbing from concussions, a stingy manto-man defense and an improving Celtics offense powered a 14-2 second-half run that capped a 44-33 victory over Joliet Catholic on Saturday night.

Led by Boykin’s eight points and nine rebounds and a team-high 11 points from senior guard Ryan

Brankin, the 14-2 swing – which stretched from the third quarter and into the final frame – came immediately after Joliet Catholic seized a 28-27 lead with a 10-4 run of its own.

“I just told my team to stay the course,” head coach Tim Trendel said.

“We had some good looks, but our shots weren’t fall-

ing. I thought our effort and defensive intensity were great, it was just a matter of making some shots.”

Boykin, a Division-I football prospect, missed five games after he was concussed in the WJOL Thanksgiving Tournament championship game against Joliet Catholic.

Bibbs concludes huge season, declares for draft VIEWS Dick Goss It may not have happened in the most prestigious bowl games, but two ballyhooed running backs from the Joliet area, Kapri Bibbs (Plainfield North) and Ty Isaac (Joliet Catholic), showed very well.

Bibbs rushed for 169 yards on 27 carries and scored three touchdowns, including a 75-yard run, as Colorado State rallied for a wild 48-45 victory over Washington State in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

In his first season at Colorado State, the sophomore earned second-team All-America recognition from the Walter Camp Foundation and first-team All-Mountain West honors, despite not becoming a starter until the seventh game. He also was named an honorable-mention All-American by Sports Illustrated. Including the bowl game, he rushed for 1,741 yards (6.2 per carry) and 31 TDs, ranking among the nation’s leaders in both categories.

In fact, Bibbs became the third college back ever to rush for more than 30 touchdowns in a season.

About a week after the game, he declared for the NFL draft. He is taking criticism on social media for the decision, but if he can get the money now, why not? If he wants a college degree, he can complete it later.

Isaac, meanwhile, rushed for 44 yards on eight carries and ran 35 yards with a short pass as Southern California whipped Fresno State 45-20 in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl. The true freshman became more of a factor late in the season and rushed for 236 yards overall with two TDs. He averaged 5.9 per carry and caught four passes for 57.

Rumors have persisted Isaac may transfer to a school closer to home. But he never said that, at least not publicly. Perhaps the

solid finish to his first season will make it more likely he will stay at USC.

No place like home When I talked with Jeff Monken two days before he was introduced at a news conference as Army’s 37th football coach, the ex-Georgia Southern coach was at the home of his parents, Nancy and Mike, in New Lenox.

His dad was the football coach at Joliet East in the 1970s and at Joliet Central when Jeff, who graduated from Central in 1985, played for the Steelmen.

“I was a wide blocker who lined up at wide receiver,” Monken said. “We had guys more talented than me at receiver.

“But playing for my dad was the greatest experience I ever had. I had grown up riding the bus to games. I ran water out there during timeouts.”

Monken, who was inducted into the Millikin University Athletics Hall of Fame in October, said he’s “incredibly privileged and honored” to be coaching at Army. He also feels good about being able to return to his boyhood home.

“It’s neat to be able to come home and bring my kids here [he and wife Beth have three daughters] where I grew up,” he said. “They really enjoy coming see grandma and grandpa.

“The folks at Georgia Southern probably miss my parents more than anybody. They went to almost every game the four years I was there. I imagine they will attend most of the Army games now.”

Monken’s parents accepted an invitation to accompany him to the news conference at West Point, N.Y. “What a source of pride it is for them to go out there,” he said.

Monken, 46, said he’s humbled to walk the same halls walked by so many of our nation’s great military leaders. Being the Army coach is a difficult job, but Monken is equipped to handle the

Despite team struggles, Peters successful at Plano play them so many times and our games have been so close, and then with the tournament implications that we have had the last two years, I guess you could definitely say they’re our biggest rivalry, overall.

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com One game into the 51st annual Plano Christmas Classic, the Coal City boys basketball team was undefeated on the season. It exited the tournament having lost three straight.

The first of those losses was to Morris, which the Coalers had previously beaten at last season’s Class 3A Herscher Regional and again at their own Thanksgiving Tournament this fall. The Coalers’ next scheduled game is against Morris, which they could very well see again later at the Prairie Central Regional.

After the Classic, Coal City center and reigning Morris Daily Herald Player of the Year Nick Peters answered some questions from the MDH.

Q. What did the team learn from Plano?

A. I think we learned that we have to come out and start each game and get off to a fast start. I think pretty much in every one of our games, we had a slow start and found ourselves down 10 or 15 points in the first half, and while we were able to battle back and make those games close, it would have been easier if we had had a better start.

Q. What did happen during the first several games of the season that didn’t during the losing streak?

A. I think the first seven games of the year, or however many there were, we kind of made more shots.

I think we were still in all of the games, and really we still got the shots we wanted. They weren’t falling, really. Mainly the losses could be blamed on our defense. Our defense definitely needs to improve, both our man-to-man and

in my four years I was able to reach that landmark. So I guess I didn’t really back then.

Q. Individually it was quite a tournament for you, making the All-Tournament team and reaching 1,000 career points.

Did you expect either of those things to happen there?

Q. How is your game different today, and specifically how have you changed as a scorer, from what it was when you scored your first varsity points?

A. I think playing foot-

honestly had no idea about it. I had no idea how many I had going into the year or into the tournament or anything like that. So that was really nice how it happened in the last game with my first bucket. With the All-Tournament team, well I wasn’t surprised by it. I wish we had fared better, and then maybe I would have known for sure that I would have gotten it. Going 1-3, even though it was a very tough field playing only in the winners’ side, the individual accolades doesn’t make up for our 1-3 effort.

Q. Would you have believed joining the 1,000-point club possible when your varsity career started?

A. Honestly, I didn’t think about it. I didn’t know it was a thing at the time. I didn’t know it was a high accolade to get. Now that I do, just being a part of it is special to me, that

ball has gotten me a lot stronger. I’m able to go through contact better than ever this year. My post game has gotten a lot better. Before, I would settle for a lot of jumpers, where now I can use my post game a lot more – both a face-up post game as well as a back-to-the-basket post game. I can go through a lot more contact, which makes it easier for me to drive to the basket and also to take more shots in close to the basket, and it’s due to me being stronger.

Q. Do you guys have a bigger rival than Morris right now?

A. I guess you really couldn’t say that we do.

With the limited amount of games in a season, every game is really a rivalry in itself. You always know the guys you’re playing against, and you really want to come out with a victory. With Morris, we

Q. You’re still unbeaten at home this year. Is it an advantage that your next four games, along with the conference tournament later this month, will be played in Coal City?

A. Yeah. With our roster, and having a lot of guys that have had a lot of time in our gym, it definitely helps to play at home.

We’re very comfortable there. Like you said, our next four are all there, and all of our games but one in January are there, and like you said the conference tournament is also there.

We’re hoping that will play into our advantage down the stretch now that we’re done with the first half of the season.

Q. What was going through such an up-anddown senior football season like?

A. It was definitely ingrained in the football players’ heads, and for me now that I’m playing basketball, that no matter what happens, you have to come back to practice and put in the work each week.

It has to happen every night in practice, not just on game nights. With how that all played out – going from ‘we might not make it’ to ‘we might make it’ to ‘we won’t make it now’ to ‘we’re in’ – it taught me individually as well as the rest of the guys on the team that no matter what happens, you have to put in your work every day.

That’s honestly where a lot of games are won and lost is during preparation each week.

NOTEBOOKS GYMNASTICS: Lincoln-Way co-op continues improving While there may be some growing pains for the Lincoln-Way co-op squad this season, it appears the team is heading in the right direction.

In the 2013 portion of the campaign, three non-seniors put up the best all-around numbers for the squad.

Junior Shelby Wiktor was the team’s top scorer at the Dec. 21 Homewood-Flossmoor meet with a 32.950. The previous week, sophomore Mallory Winter was the top scorer at Conant with a 32.8.

Another young athlete poised to make some noise is freshman Kara Auchstetter.

She hasn’t been too far behind her more experienced teammates. At H-F, she was right behind Witkor with a 32.6. At Conant, she was just shy of Winter with a 32.3.

“We think we’re sitting pretty good,” Romeoville’s Dakota Vostry said. “We really have confidence in this team this year, and we’re looking for big things in conference and the postseason.”

Thursday’s 15-team Tinley Park Invitational. Vostry had a six-game 1,345 pinfall total to finish third individually. Teammate Kyle Zaremba (1,250) finished 10th.

“We didn’t bowl well and we still finished second,” Vostry said. “I guess that’s a good sign. We thought we had a good chance to win it. We just missed a lot of spares and we didn’t get any breaks.”

Blumberg was asked Monday what, if anything, is correctable for Morris in order for it to close the gap on the Pirates in the future.

“For some reason, we tried to become shot-blockers tonight.

We played behind in the post, which is something we never want to allow,” Blumberg said.

“We have counters when teams overplay and take some things away that we didn’t get to, that we didn’t execute and we need to clean some of those things up over the next two months.”

Had Callahan been on the floor, Witte said Carter Gallick still would have brought the ball up the floor, but that Callahan would likely would have been stationed in the corner, where Barnett was instead.

“You never know when postseason happens, with these emphasis the way they are now, we might have somebody else in foul trouble.

Someone else is gonna have to step up and get the job done,” Witte said.

“We’re not a one-man team, and it might hurt us in terms of All-Tournament recognition type of things, but as long as we keep winning games, I don’t care.”

Newark’s only two losses at Plano were to Aurora Christian, which it had defeated earlier, and to Seneca in an effort that was less positive than its others.

“Kaneland’s a good quality team. We played [Hinckley-Big Rock], we played pretty well. Again it was a good game,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “Aurora Christian, they got us down 12-0 and that was pretty much the game. But then Seneca just put it on us. We’re a young team. Let’s forget about a game.”

What was a poor finish for one local team was a great way to end the tournament for another. Newark’s 56-55 defeat of Coal City on Monday afternoon was a win

for the Class 1A Norsemen against a 2013 Class 3A regional champion.

“Good composure at the end. A couple of things went wrong for us, but they held on. It’s a good win,” Tollefson said. “Last year, and the year before, sometimes without that true point guard, we would tend to just panic, and I thought the kids did a really nice job.”

Coal City did outscore Newark, 32-26, in the second half of their game, putting a thin silver lining on an otherwise poor ending to Coal City coach Brad Boresi.

“Right now, we’re just making it tough on ourselves because we’ve dug ourselves a hole,” Boresi said. “In all four games, we’ve managed to come back. As bad as we played in the first half today, to still have a shot at the end to win the game, I can’t knock the effort we had in the second half.”

Coal City got more than a week off after the loss until its next game, which is Tuesday against Morris.

“I’d much rather have [a losing streak] here than a three-game stretch in our [Interstate Eight] conference season, but at the same time, I think I found some things out at the tournament too,” Boresi said. “It wasn’t just a 1-3 finish and everything was bad for us.

“I think I found some guys who can play in certain situations. I thought Nick Micetich did a nice job, stepped up and hit some big shots for us, getting pretty much his most varsity time he’s had all year as a sophomore. That was a bright spot. Overall, I wouldn’t say it was a complete failure, but it wasn’t the best of showings for us.”

ox “Soxy” Mihelich, a 4-year-old bichon frise, can’t make his own New Year’s resolutions.

So his owner, Andy Mihelich of Joliet, is making a couple for him: less bacon bits, sleeping at night instead of waking up owners at 3 a.m. to play, and no more snacking on the mail.

“He got into a check one time,” Mihelich said. “We had to Scotch tape it.”

Amanda Caponi of Joliet is resolving that Oliver, her 2-year-old golden retriever, will stop “counter surfing” and nosing through the garbage.

Pushing everything back on the counter and facing the trash can to the wall doesn’t deter Oliver.

“We don’t put much food on the counter anymore that we leave out, like bread and cookies,” Caponi said. “Catching him in the act seems to be working the best so far.”

Mary Johnson of Joliet is tired of diapering Bronson, a 4-year-old Pom-Chi, a bad habit for a “Harley-riding biker dog.”

New Year’s resolution? Embrace housebreaking, Johnson said, and become free of his “diders” made from fleece, Velcro and panty liners.

By contrast, Sarah Pyle of Romeoville and Amanda Rose Hicks-Barnhardt, board member and public information volunteer at Joliet Jewish Congregation, have resolved that their pets will work on deeper issues, such as fear-based behavior problems and unhealthy weight gain.

Sullivan says: • Get more exercise. Simply walking the dog or playing fetch in the yard gives your dog mental stimulation as well as good exercise. Mature dogs have a harder time burning off calories, and canine obesity is a common problem for mature dogs.

• Learn a new trick. Search on the Internet for dog tricks that you can train your dog to perform in a minimal amount of time.

• Better manners. Your dog wants to behave and not cause any trouble for the family. But they understand only one language: dog language. You may need to consult a professional trainer to educate you on how your dog views the world and how to demonstrate leadership that they understand and respect.

• Get current on vaccinations.

Preventive care is a great way to ensure that you are doing all you can to keep the family dog from falling ill in the new year.

Haggerty says: • Give your dog a job. Dogs are made to work and the majority of pet dogs are bored. There are lots of fun things out there to do with your dog to give them an outlet for that work drive and keep their minds active.

• Feed a quality diet. Consider switching to a high-quality, grain-free food or, even better, a raw diet.

• Educate yourself on vet care and vaccinations. Many dogs are overvaccinated. Do your own research before agreeing to subject your dog to all those vaccinations and medications that can have serious side-effects.

hether it’s a golden to play catch with, a beagle to snuggle with or a Labrador to run with, a dog is often one of a child’s first and best friends.

If your family is considering making a new friend, there are plenty of things to think about before you get a dog.

The special bond between dogs and their owners is based on “pure, unconditional love,” said Katenna Jones, director of educational programs with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. “For children, the benefit of dogs is immeasurable, but the key to the most beneficial relationships is the right match.”

“Dogs make great pets because they are naturally social animals that typically crave human companionship,” said Jenna Stregowski of Guide to Dogs on About.com. Dogs “encourage responsibility in kids as well as adults, and they can boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem.”

Family decision Before buying or adopting a dog, sit down as a family and make the decision together, Jones said. What are your priorities or deal-breakers in terms of size, age, maintenance? Do you want a runner or a lap dog? How about drooling or barking?

At what age are your children ready?

“I think growing up with dogs can be a great experience for a child of any age,” Stregowski said.

“I am no parenting expert, but I would say it all depends on the parent and the home situation. Until a child is grown, the parent is the one ultimately responsible for the family dog. The child’s involvement in handling and training a dog depends on the individual child’s maturity and ability in the eyes of the parent.”

Dogs can knock over toddlers or crawlers, but kids ages 5 to 10 are ideal owners “because they tend to have the ability to understand some degree of responsibility but are not old enough to be so distracted by their social lives that they forget about their dogs,”

• PETS Continued from page 24 Pyle’s 1-year-old pit bull mix, Peety, that Pyle adopted at 9 weeks from a neighbor’s unplanned litter, is more than shy. Peety is afraid of “people, objects, new places and noises,” she said, which makes him appear aggressive.

“I can’t move the furniture around without him freaking out,” Pyle said. “He has tried biting people. Luckily I can see it coming and be able to get there before he can make contact with skin.”

After taking agility classes at Lucky Dog Academy in Plainfield, where Pyle now works as a trainer, Peety has gained confidence. Unfortunately, Peety had

to quit due to mobility problems in both hips and one knee, so Pyle switched Peety to nosework classes and he succeeded there, too, because a “dog can’t sniff and be scared at the same time,” she said.

“If we had never gone there, I believe he would have been put down for biting someone,” Pyle said. “But he still has issues with people and I want to help him, so I started to teach him rally.”

In rally, Peety walks on Pyle’s left side as they navigate 20 cones, each labeled with a specific and increasingly difficult command, such as “sit,” “down” and “turn.” Peety begins each rally with 200 points. Judges deduct for mistakes. Obedience is key to winning.

While it’s hard to overcome the appeal of an adorable puppy, a young adult dog is a good match for a busy family, Jones said. “You will skip the difficult and time-consuming house-training, manners training and teething phases,” Jones said. Those burdensome tasks are the reasons why adolescent dogs are the most likely to be relinquished to an animal shelter, Jones said.

“Plus, you will see right away the final size, shedding amount, exercise needs and other characteristics such as personality that may not be anticipated from a puppy.”

Breed all about it Stregowski typically doesn’t recommend one dog breed over another.

“While breed plays a large role in the personality of a dog, all dogs are different,” Stregowski said. “One golden retriever might be the best family dog ever, while another might have fear issues.”

Stregowski did suggest some of “the commonly agreed upon breeds that go well with families.” For medium to large dogs: golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, standard poodles and collies. For small to medium dogs: beagles, shelties, bichons and Havanese.

Jones likes to recommend mixed breeds, “as they tend to have fewer health and behavioral concerns that pure breeds. Designer breeds (such as a labradoodle, a Labrador and poodle hybrid) are, in fact, mixed breeds with catchy names.”

Stregowski had one more piece of advice: “If you ask me, I will recommend a mutt every time. Hicks-Barnhardt made resolutions for two dogs: Lorelai Leigh, a 6-year-old tri-color beagle-coonhound mix, and Fessie, an 11-year-old, 107-pound Labrador mix.

Lorelai Leigh needs to lose 3 pounds, which is a lot of extra weight for a small dog possibly needing surgery. Fessie will address his fear of strangers.

“She (Lorelai Leigh) is a little too chunky now and it is bad for her back, hip and leg,” Hicks-Barnhardt said. “The

other guy, I hope to take him to a behavioral specialist or trainer to help with his issues since being abused as a pup.”

When Lorelai Leigh was about 12 weeks old and before Hicks-Barnhardt owned her, a large-breed dog mauled her and fractured her back, temporarily paralyzing her.

She required “many staples” and morphine for pain, Hicks-Barnhardt said. The owner abandoned her, so Hicks-Barnhardt adopted Lorelai Leigh to spare the dog euthanasia, she said. Extra weight adds to the strain Lorelai Leigh already feels due to the scar tissue on her back and upper hip area.

Lorelai Leigh won’t be dieting alone. Hicks-Barnhardt is returning to her gluten-free

vegan diet and plans to team up with Lorelai Leigh for long walks when warm weather returns.

“Due to a disability, which led to my weight gain, I have trouble walking,” Hicks-Barnhardt said. “So she will waddle and I will limp.”

Ten years ago, Fessie – also a rescue dog – just showed up at Hicks-Barnhardt’s house. He was full of ticks and protruding rib bones. For several months, Fessie required four small daily meals to encourage healthy weight gain. Fessie hates men, a clue of past abuse, she said.

“I would like him to meet a professional (trainer), just see how the poor kid responds,” Hicks-Barnhardt said. “Fes deserves something new and less stressful.”

This was the deal in last week’s final column. Chen Yuechen from China won the 2013 Richard Freeman Junior Deal of the Year from the International Bridge Press Association for his defense against six notrump.

Chen (West) had guessed to lead his club three. South had taken East’s nine with his ace, played a diamond to dummy’s jack, and run the heart jack. West had won and found the killing return of his remaining diamond.

South won in his hand, cashed his club king, and led a spade, planning to finesse dummy’s 10. He needed two dummy entries: one to repeat the heart finesse and the second to cash the 13th heart. But Chen put up his spade jack, a textbook entry-killing play that defeated the contract.

I wonder how many readers noticed that South missed an interesting chance to make his contract. Before playing a diamond to dummy’s jack, declarer should have cashed his diamond ace. This looks pointless, but not when West started with only two diamonds. When he got in with his heart ace, he would have been endplayed.

If West returned a club, South could get four tricks in the suit by playing low from the dummy to collect three spades, one heart, four diamonds and four clubs. Or, if West shifted to a low spade, declarer would win with dummy’s 10 and have his second dummy entry. He would win three spades, three hearts, four diamonds and two clubs.

This is called a Dentist’s Coup – extracting the safe exit card(s) from a defender’s hand.

Prevent recurrence of knee bursitis Dear Dr. K: I have knee bursitis.

What is bursitis? What can I do to relieve my discomfort?

Dear Reader: A bursa is a sac-like structure that sits over large joints such as the knee or hip joints. Bursae act as cushions between muscle and bone and reduce friction during movement.

When a bursa becomes painful or inflamed, the condition is called bursitis. The symptoms of knee bursitis include pain made worse by movement of the knee, but which is still present even when the knee is not moving. There often is swelling of the area above the kneecap (the patella). Finally, if you push on the area where you feel pain, you’ll feel tenderness.

The knee has several bursae. The bursa that lies directly over the kneecap (called the prepatellar bursa) and the bursa located just below the knee joint, toward the inside (the anserine bursa) are the most likely to cause pain.

Sometimes, bursitis develops from a disease that can affect joints, such as gout or rheumatoid arthri-

The common causes of knee bursitis are overuse or prolonged kneeling.

During the healing process, which usually lasts two to six weeks, you’ll need to avoid activities that aggravate your bursitis. If you have prepatellar bursitis and can’t avoid resting on your knee, use a kneeling pad as a cushion. If you have anserine bursitis, sleep with a small pillow between your thighs so the other knee does not rest its weight on the sore knee at night.

In the meantime, try RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) to reduce swelling. You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or an anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) to relieve discomfort and reduce inflammation.

If the pain is intense or does not quickly improve, your doctor may inject a corticosteroid drug directly into the area. However, repeated steroid injections can damage the tissue in your knee.

Your doctor also may recommend physical therapy to strengthen and stretch your thigh muscles, which help to protect your knees.

After your bursitis heals, take these preventive measures to prevent a recurrence: • Get up and stretch your legs regularly if you work on your knees for long periods of time.

• Stretch your legs before and after you exercise.

• Vary your workouts to rest your knees.

• Elevate and ice your knees after you exercise or spend a long time on your knees.

Money for cigarettes could go toward helping others Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have stopped smoking. I haven’t had a cigarette in over a week, and I won’t ever smoke again. That’s a promise I made to myself, and I will keep it. I’m a very strong-willed guy.

I still have nine full packs of cigarettes, and my uncle offered me $25 for them, but I hate to contribute to his nicotine habit. I had intended to destroy the cigarettes so they wouldn’t bring harm to anyone else. Your opinion will be appreciated. – Kenny, St. Paul, Minn.

Dear Kenny: First of all, congratulations for being smoke-free! It wasn’t easy, but it was a very good decision.

One option is to destroy the cigarettes, and there is symbolic value in doing so. Another option – since your uncle would get his cigarettes anyway – is to give him the nine packs and give the $25 to the American Cancer Society. That way, the money would go to the cause of helping others who are addicted to cigarettes and who are eager to eliminate the powerful nicotine habit forever.

Dr. Wallace: I live with my mother and father.

My dad is a good man and works hard to support my mother and me, but he finds it very difficult because my mother has evolved from a social drinker into a full-blown alcoholic. She doesn’t get drunk every day, but she drinks every day and it causes my dad and me a lot of concern.

She admits that she is addicted to alcohol, but tells us she can’t control herself and knows she will be addicted until the

I keep telling her that she can be cured if she would find help, but she says she is beyond help.

Isn’t it possible for Mom to go to some sort of hospital where she can be cured of drinking? Dad and I would do anything to get Mom back to what she once was. – Nameless, Elkhart, Ind. Dear Nameless: There is no “cure” for alcoholism, but your mother can join millions of Americans living an alcohol-free life as a recovering alcoholic.

One of the best selfhelp organizations to keep an ex-drinker free from alcohol is Alcoholics Anonymous. But nothing will help Mom until she wants that help. Do all in your power to get Mom to become part of this group.

I would recommend that you become a member of Alateen, a group that helps teens cope with parents and friends whose lives are affected by alcohol. Find the local group in your telephone book. Best of luck to you and your family.

Your story is heartbreaking, and I hope Mom listens to you and finds the courage to break free from her addiction.

Roberts talks about ‘August: Osage County’ was a treasure box of discovery for me, and at the top of the heap was Meryl Streep, who showed that it is about working hard. Because I’ve never seen anybody work harder than she works.

Nowadays, by choice – the choice of raising a family – she limits herself to one starring role a year (2012: “Mirror Mirror,” 2011: “Larry Crowne,” “2010: “Eat Pray Love” and some ensemble work in “Valentine’s Day”).

It’s safe to say she’s the second lead in the dysfunctional family melodrama/dark comedy “August: Osage County,” chewing up the scenery right behind the devouring of scenery by her idol Meryl Streep.

Roberts plays Barbara, who she describes as the “oldest and least appreciated sister” in the Weston family. The setting is the Weston home, where cancer-riddled, pill-popping, fouled-mouthed mom (Streep) continues to dominate everything and everyone when the family comes together after dad (Sam Shepard) commits suicide.

Roberts recently spoke about her role as well as the awe and respect she holds for Streep.

Ed Symkus: Have you seen the film yet?

Julia Roberts: I just did, and I sat between [costars] Dermot Mulroney and Julianne Nicholson. I think I cut off Dermot’s circulation, just squeezing his hand with excitement to see what everybody did. It’s such a great ensemble, and even though there were a lot of scenes that we were all in together, my favorite one is at the bus station with Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Chris [Cooper]. To watch the way they did that was just heartbreaking. That’s why you want to go and see what your friends did so perfectly.

ES: There’s already a lot of talk about what’s being referred to as the “fish scene,” where you and Meryl really go toe-to-toe in emotional intensity. Could you talk about putting that scene together?

JR: The rhythms and the performance of it is terrifying. I think the word “fish”

ES: You’ve said many times in the past how much of a Meryl fan you are. Did the experience of finally acting with her live up to your expectations?

JR: To work with Meryl Streep is a

But here’s the thing, here’s the crux of the biscuit, if you will. We worked our butts off, because there was no other way to do it. I’ve never worked so hard in my life! And I’ve given birth to three children! It was like a mountain to climb, every single day. And we discovered that the only way to climb it was holding hands, whether we liked it or not. We would work all day, and go home and shower, then all run to Meryl’s house, and start practicing for the next day.

Because you had to have that momentum going, otherwise it would just leave you.

And it was the best acting experience of my life. I don’t know how they did it eight times a week [in the play], without some kind of rehab after. Our experience

dream come true for anyone. It was intimidating, certainly, to be in those scenes with her. Choking her and things like that is not how I pictured it going, in my mind.

All these years I thought we’d be together and having tea, speaking in fabulous accents, and all dressed up, looking very chic. And then there we were, and I’m sweating and I have on a big butt pad. So, that wasn’t what I had in my dream. But it was amazing, and I think that at the end of every day, coming out of the truth of the Weston family, and into our own truths of who we are together, there was always a hello and a kiss and an “I love you,” and that was really the elixir that I needed to come in the next day and to climb over the next table to choke her in the next way.

It’s very scary to do that kind of stuff.

You have to feel really safe with that person. She’s not only sublime and superior in her work, she’s such a beautiful person that she sees not only what I need as an actor, but what I need as a girl in the world. And she provides all that, all the time.

ES: This movie is all about angry people venting their frustrations, sometimes on each other.

How do you deal with that in your own life?

JR: I act (pause). I mean, I don’t have to be angry now for 10 more years. I got it all out.
