In the 1870s, the Kankakee Navigation Company built a series of dams and locks to help navigate and create water power. In the distance, directly behind the Eagle Hotel, Dam 2 still is visible.

Plainfield man says construction debris was used to prevent flooding

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield farmer recently in the news for allegations of illegal dumping said he was able to save farmland from erosion with construction and metal debris dropped along a DuPage River bank.

Records show the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has been inspecting the site for 14 years. The Army Corps of Engineers received complaints as far back as 1998.

But authorities only moved to stop the dumping after a TV news report in November.

Herman Fritz said he had a good reason for allowing construction waste to be brought to the bank of the DuPage River bordering his farm.

“I did it to save the farm,” said Fritz, 78.

Fritz said the debris was used to prevent floods from sweeping away his land.

He also said he burned tree branches and other waste that was deposited on his land in flooding over the past several decades.

Documents from several inspections, which were done by county officials on behalf of the IEPA, during the past 14 years detail several violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act. When a CBS Channel 2 report on the alleged dumping of construction, garbage and other waste aired Nov. 20, authorities moved quickly to stop it.

On the same day, Will County State’s Attorney officials filed an emergency injunction to stop Fritz from dumping or allowing anyone else to dump waste along the DuPage River.

The Will County Land Use Department conducted an inspection on the farm for the state EPA on Dec. 5. And the state’s attorney’s office is considering criminal charges as the injunction remains in place.

Fritz said he has stopped dumping anything on the riverbank and won’t dump in the future.

“I’m absolutely done with it,” he said.

Saving the farm

Fritz said he saved his land over the years by building up the river bank.

He said he has been dumping construction materials and metal wastes along the river for the past 60 years to shore up the bank and prevent the river’s flooding from wiping out the farm.

The farm is located across the river from the Joliet Park District’s Wedgewood Golf Course, west of Route 59.

Fritz talked about a flood in 1954, which, he said, destroyed crops on his family farm and swept land into the river. Dirt and sandbags placed along the bank were swept out and didn’t

items, such as bed springs and old scrap metal. He said he allowed a construction company to dump waste along the bank for a fee.

Fritz estimates that he saved seven to nine acres of farm land over the years by shoring up the bank.

During a tour of the farm Fritz gave to The Herald-News, he highlighted where the west riverbank was 4 to 5 feet higher than the ground level. Over the years, he built up the bank, starting at the western edge and moving downstream to the southern border of the farm until he was forced to stop in November.

He also showed examples along the bank of how the river has widened and taken out farm land and old trees.

“I used to play on the other side of the trees,” he said. “Now it’s all the river. I can’t even go there no more.”

Along the riverbank, landfill waste such as plastic bags and garbage can be seen buried underneath piles of dirt, gravel and cement waste. But Fritz denied dumping garbage along the DuPage River, saying he only dumped heavy construction waste.

So Fritz said he started dumping heavy construction waste, such as cement slabs and twisted metal beams, along

the bank to reinforce flood control measures already in place.

During the next six decades, Fritz said, he continued shoring up the bank on his side of the river. He said he also dumped some of his own

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency records show that seven inspections were conducted on the farm since 2001 by the Will County Land Use Department, which conducts inspections for the state agency.

The records don’t include the latest inspection on Dec. 5, which is a part of the state’s attorney’s investigation.

In six of those inspections, investigators discovered 10 or more violations relating to land and water pollution, open dumping and burning and failure to operate a proper landfill.

Members of military thank Eagle Scout

By SANDY ILLIAN BOSCH Shaw Media correspondent Surrounded by a room full of family, friends, fellow Boy Scouts and supporters, Joshua Hudson of Plainfield expressed his thanks Sunday for those who helped him to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

“I thank the members of the Armed Forces, those who are here and those who are not,” he said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”

Joshua became Plainfield Troop 19’s newest Eagle Scout on Sunday. Like all Scouts who reach the organization’s highest level of membership, Joshua planned, organized and carried out a project as his final step toward the Eagle Scout rank.

“I wanted to support the troops,” said Joshua, who set out to collect supplies to fill 150 care packages for Operation Care Package. The

organization sends packages to active service members throughout the world. Joshua collected items at 10 locations throughout the Plainfield area. After about a month, he had collected enough socks, beef jerky, protein bars and foam footballs, along with other items, to fill 180 boxes. He also collected $1,800 to help Operation Care Package.

“I grew up in a patriotic family,” Joshua, son of Timothy and Julie Hudson, said of the motivation behind his project.

Family friend Sgt. Major Dan Miller of the U.S. Marine Corps was one of several members of the military to personally thank Joshua for his work Sunday. Miller told the crowd Sunday of a package that he received from the Hudson family during his second tour of duty in the Middle East. He had received packages before, but this one, containing tiny American flags,

“I wanted to support the troops.”

Representatives of the Air Force and the Coast Guard Auxiliary also were on hand Sunday to thank Joshua for his support of the troops.

with a plaque containing a portion of a flag that accompanied him and the rest of the 746th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron on a trip into Baghdad and over other parts of the Middle East as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Joshua also received a certificate of appreciation from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary National Commodore.

Scoutmaster Adrian McClelland congratulated Joshua on achieving his Eagle Scout rank, but reminded him that Sunday’s ceremony was just the beginning of a life committed to the obligations of the Eagle Scout rank – honor, loyalty, courage, responsibility and service.

Fire spreads quickly Three more election petition challenges filed in Will County in Lockport house

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – Three more April election petition challenges were submitted last week to the Will County Clerk’s office.

The latest objections were filed against: Amy Wendell-Blish, a candidate for the Joliet Park District Board; Leonel “Leo” Venegas, candidate for the Valley View Community Unit School District 365U School Board; and Anne Burley, a candidate for Fountaindale Public Library District Board, Wendell-Blish’s petitions were challenged by James Lofky, a park district resident,

who alleges Wendell-Blish fell short of the signatures required to get on the ballot and submitted incomplete petitions. Wendell-Blish’s petition only had 225 signatures – fewer than the 421 required, the objection states.

Venegas’ petitions were challenged by Mir Ali, of Bolingbrook, who alleges his petitions lacked signatures and had names of people not registered in the school district.

Dennis Raga, of Bolingbrook, challenged Burley’s petition, alleging she is not a registered voter in the library district and did not have a sufficient number of signatures.

Another challenge was filed against Burley earlier in the

week but that individual later withdrew.

Two other challenges to election petitions were reported last week.

In Joliet, City Councilwoman Bettye Gavin’s election petitions were challenged by one of her opponents, James Foster, who alleges she broke federal law by collecting signatures at the nonprofit agency where she serves as executive director.

Gavin has denied the allegations.

Lockport Township Fire Protection District candidate Grant Spooner’s election petitions were challenged by Jim Pelc, a Lockport resident, who alleges Spooner made changes to his petition post-filing.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – An apparent chimney fire caused heavy damage to a ranch-style home Sunday.

Lockport Township Battalion Chief Ed Rossetto said firefighters were called at 2:25 p.m. to the 15900 block of Ranken Drive after a resident reported the fire.

“He’d been home and told the first crew the fire had started near the chimney fireplace area,” Rossetto

said.

While the man was able to get out safely, the fire spread to the attic and the rest of the house. Rossetto said it took about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

“With the wind [Sunday] it spread quickly once it got up into the attic. The whole house is heavily damaged,” he said.

Fire investigators were at the scene Sunday evening.

The Red Cross was arranging shelter for the couple that lives there.

Keep military in our prayers in the new year In last week’s column I wrote about organizations doing great things for people and thought I’d have a follow-up to that. But sometimes things pop up in my mailbox that need special attention and this subject is one of them.

Bob Stapleton of Joliet wrote to say his son, Technical Sgt. Nick Stapleton of Minooka, was deployed on Wednesday. This is Nick’s fifth combat mission and seventh overall deployment as an Air Force Reservist since he enlisted in early 2001.

I’ve written about several young men being deployed, and I first wrote about Nick back in 2011. The late Herald-News columnist John Whiteside wrote about Nick following his first deployment after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

We read about local men and women being deployed, celebrate them when they return and grieve for them and their families when we read about their passing.

But in the middle of it all are the families back home praying for their safe return. Parents such as Bob Stapleton, who has seen his son leave seven times.

Children like Nick’s – Rylie, 7, McKenna, 6, and Brady, 3 – who count on Skype to see their dad as they wait for his return.

War takes its toll on the families back home, Bob said.

The last time he was gone, his young children didn’t really understand what was going on.

“They know exactly this time,” Bob said.

As a parent, Bob is proud of his son for having such respect for his country and being willing to serve. But each time he is called to active duty, it gets harder and harder.

“It was really difficult to see him go this time, with three little kids,” he said.

Nick’s employer, Mastec, a telecommunications provider, has been very supportive of the time Nick takes off for training and deployment.

Bob can’t say enough about employers who support our servicemen in this way.

Even with the official order to end combat in Afghanistan, 12,000 troops will remain as part of Operation Resolute Support to advise Afghan forces in the fight against the Taliban, ac-

cording to New York Times reporter Dave Phillips.

In his Wednesday story, Phillips said Americans are shipping out to train Afghan troops and protect places where Americans remain, “leaving behind spouses and children as the divide between military and civilian life in America keeps growing.”

Nick’s homecoming is scheduled for July 28. Right now, he has 14 years in the reserves and it’s important for him to reach 20 years, he told his dad.

Those who joined the military before 9/11 had no idea what they might be in for, Bob said.

“But these kids, they know exactly what they are volunteering for,” he said.

“That’s why we have to give them all the support we can.”

DETACHMENT ISSUES Certain individuals are at increased risk for “retinal detachment” which occurs when the delicate light-sensitive membrane (retina) separates from the back of the eye. People with a high degree of nearsightedness are susceptible to this problem because their eyes are longer than average from front to back. Others at high risk for retinal detachment are those with a family history of the condition.; Cataract-and glaucoma-surgery patients; and diabetes (who are at risk for “diabetic retinopathy,” which leads to the formation of new blood vessels on the retina). While retina detachment is a medical emergency, approximately 90% of cases are treatable. Early detection of symptoms such as the appearance of persistent flashes of bright light should prompt immediate treatment.

People who have only slight retinal detachment can often still see fairly well, but if the detachment progresses it can lead to total loss of vision in the affected eye. As with any surgery, there will be an adjustment period. This can be frustrating at times, but patience and taking the right actions will lead to a full recovery. The first inspection occurred on May 1, 2001, when 10 violations were documented. After a cease and desist letter was sent to Fritz, a follow up inspection on Nov. 19, 2001, concluded that Fritz had complied with the order and cleaned up the farm.

However, in five inspections dating June 12 and Oct. 20 in 2008, June 23 and Aug. 20 in 2013, and Nov. 14, 2014, 13 to 15 violations were found in each inspection.

Several cease and desist letters weren’t answered by Fritz during that time period.

“I wasn’t ever fined,” Fritz said, adding that he understood that the IEPA had ordered him to stop dumping in the past, but he didn’t because the bank was working to save his farm from floods.

However, after the state’s attorney issued the injunction against him, he decided to stop.

Fritz said that he was working to respond to another cease and desist letter dated Dec. 5 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers relating to the case, stating that a Dec. 2 investigation from the organization revealed there was “a discharge of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States.”

Army Corps spokeswoman Lynne Whelan said the agency received a response from Fritz’s lawyer, Randall Miller, but would not discuss it.

Miller could not be reached for comment.

Whelan said the Army Corps investigated com plaints concerning possible DuPage river pollution at

Fritz’s Farm in 2008 and 2014.

The agency also received complaints in 1998 and 2012 regarding dumping on the bank, but did not investigate those

MARJORIE A. GRAHAM Marjorie A. Graham (nee Tynon), age 85, joined the angels after a battle with cancer on Thursday, January 1, 2015.

Survived by her husband, Charles; son, Kevin; and nieces, Sara (Sally) Niedrich, Jean Bagel and Jane Crnkovic.

Preceded in death by her father, James Tynon; mother, Madeline Feaser Tynon; stepmother, Josephine Tynon; and sisters, Mary Jane Crnkovic and Helen Niedrich.

Marge’s first job was as a secretary at the Joliet Arsenal followed by appointment as secretary to the first three Joliet city managers. During this ten year period, she cared for an ailing mother. At about this time she had a blind date with Chuck with whom she would marry in 1960, and in 1969, son Kevin arrived.

She was a columnist for the Herald News, a teacher’s assistant at Parks School and narrator for Chuck’s travel films shown on Channel 6. Her travels included heli-hiking in Canada and a tour of the Orient (Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaya).

Janet is survived by Donald, her loving husband of 62 years; and three daughters, Sheryl Larson (Hank Kinzie), Renee Kemph (Tom) and Jana Smith (Brian). She is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Strom, and numerous cousins.

Janet was a secretary for the Will County superintendent of schools for five years and the Joliet grade schools for 16 years.

She was the lead in a Sweet Adeline’s quartet, which won the regional championship in the early 70’s. She was also a volunteer for various organizations and honed her bridge skills over several decades.

As per her wishes, Janet was cremated. A memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Joliet, Illinois at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17th.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Joliet area Hospice, or charity of your choice, would be appreciated.

Janet was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.

She will be greatly missed.

There were cruises to Alaska (her favorite), the Bahamas, Cabo San Lucas and a cruise that included a submarine dive off the Yucatan coast. There were rail tours of the Copper Canyon, a mule ride down the Grand Canyon, a hot air balloon ride over Albuquerque and a ride in a sailplane. Besides many tours in the U.S., she booked tours to Ireland, the U.K., France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Morocco and Yugoslavia.

Among her more memorable trips was in the U.K. three days after Princess Diana died. Another was an audience (along with 5,000 others) with Pope John Paul. An introduction of special guests included one for St. Raymond’s choir from Joliet.

She had no prior knowledge of their presence there.

Marge enjoyed getting together with her many friends. She belonged to several clubs, a den mother for the cub scouts, president of the Paulites church seniors group and a Eucharistic Minister. Later in life, she brought Holy Communion to the sick and was active at St. Paul the Apostle Church. And now she will add to her bucket list by soaring with the angels. According to her Irish heritage, we should cry at the birth of a baby and celebrate a life well-lived.

Quinn’s last week: Prospects uncertain for special session

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn enters his final days in office with a last speech and special legislative session on the agenda, but it’s unclear whether fellow Democratic leaders will work with him on his proposal for a 2016 comptroller election or other issues he might raise.

The Chicago Democrat has kept a lower profile since losing Nov. 4, aside from a weekend flurry of public stops. Political experts and lawmakers say his dwindling influence means little hope for a full commitment from legislators on his desire for an election to replace late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, or any last push to increase Illinois’ minimum wage. Aides also acknowledge the lower-key exit, saying he’s focused on slogging through clemency petitions and the transition of power to

Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner.

Quinn addresses the City Club of Chicago’s business and civic leaders for a Tuesday luncheon – a setting where he’s previously floated new ideas but this week could also talk about his legacy or future plans.

He’s called lawmakers to Springfield two days later to consider the special election and told reporters Sunday he hopes lawmakers also use Thursday to consider succession of statewide officeholders on a wider scale. With days left, though, lawmakers said there had been little talk of plans to take up the issue.

House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie acknowledged the opportunity for tackling other matters, but said she hadn’t spoken with House Speaker Michael Madigan about the election proposal.

Van crashes into store, thieves make off with merchandise

CHICAGO – Chicago police say thieves using a minivan as a battering ram crashed into a Best Buy store in Chicago and

made off with several items.

Police say the minivan crashed into the front window of the store in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood just before 5 a.m.

Sunday.

Authorities say several people jumped out of the van, grabbed items and left the van behind as they ran away.

Police did not immediately have any information on whether the van had been stolen as were some of the other vehicles used in so-called “crash-and-grab” burglaries in the city in recent months.

No arrests have been made, and police did not say if they suspect the thieves were tied to the string of similar burglaries in and around the city.

Man dies after being hit by Chicago commuter train

CHICAGO – Chicago police say a man was killed when he was hit by a commuter train.

Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Tammy Chase told the Chicago Sun-Times that the northbound Red Line train struck the man about 3 a.m. at a station.

Police said the victim later was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man’s identity was not immediately released.

The CTA says train traffic resumed about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Frerichs marks swearing-in with community project

CHAMPAIGN – Incoming state treasurer Mike Frerichs will celebrate his inauguration by helping on a community-service project and hosting receptions.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported the Democrat will sponsor an event Sunday on a Habitat for Humanity project in Springfield before his Jan. 12 swearing-in.

Spokesman Dave Clarkin said Frerichs chose Habitat because of its work in rebuilding Gifford.

That’s the northeast Champaign County town where Frerichs grew up and which was struck by a 2013 tornado.

Other events include receptions Saturday at Big Grove Tavern in Champaign and Sunday at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in the capital.

Both events are free but reser-

vations are required.

Frerichs replaces Republican Dan Rutherford, who lost a primary election for governor.

$26M set aside to buy land for parks in Illinois

OAK PARK – An investment of $26 million by taxpayers will allow communities across Illinois to buy land for parks and improve recreation.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced the grants Saturday as part of a plan he said will increase recreational opportunities, create jobs and help the economy.

The money comes from the state’s Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development program. It will provide $24 million to support 75 projects in 28 counties throughout Illinois.

Another $2 million comes from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The money will provide up to half of each project’s cost.

The program is funded by a portion of the state real estate transfer tax. Since 1987, it has provided $391 million to 1,700 local parks.

Born May 5, 1924, in Wesley Twp., Les was a son of the late Arthur and Josephine Shenk-Sorensen. He was raised and educated in Wesley Township, and on August 8, 1947, Les married Shirley Ragain in Kankakee. He was a farmer in Wesley Twp., but also held employment with the Joliet Arsenal and owned and operated Sorensen Trucking. Farming and trucking were Les’ true passion, but he also enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

Thomas Weinhold, resident of Kimberling City, Missouri since 1995 and former longtime resident of Plainfield, Illinois, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at the age of 72.

Tom was the son of Robert R. and Ruth Day Weinhold. He was born on November 22, 1942, growing up in the Plainfield area, and attended Lockport West High School. He worked on the family farm and was part owner of the R&H Choppers motorcycle shop in Plainfield. Tom could build chopper motorcycles from scratch. Tom was also a lifelong avid fisherman and car enthusiast. His retirement years were filled with fishing on Tablerock Lake and working on old cars.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 45

BOSTON – His accusers brandish a confession scribbled inside a boat during an intensive manhunt and a video they say shows him placing a backpack with a bomb a few feet from a little boy who died when it exploded seconds later.

His defenders bank on the story of a difficult childhood in a former Soviet republic and his radicalization at the hands of an influential older brother who could have pressured him into participating in the deadly attack.

Jury selection for the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, accused in the Boston Marathon attacks, begins Monday. Those chosen from a pool of about 1,200 will decide whether Tsarnaev planned and carried out the twin bombings that killed three people and injured more than 260 near the finish line of the race on April 15, 2013. If they find him guilty, they will decide whether he should be put to death.

It’s perhaps the most closely watched federal death penalty case since Timothy McVeigh was convicted and executed for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Tsarnaev’s lawyers tried in vain for months to get the trial moved, arguing the Boston jury pool was tainted because of the number of locals with connections to the race and drawing parallels to the McVeigh case, which was moved to Denver for similar reasons. But U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr. has been unmoved.

Wild ride for Arizona bobcat stuck in car grille

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – An Arizona bobcat may have used up one of its nine lives after it survived getting stuck inside an oncoming car.

Arizona Game and Fish Department spokeswoman Lynda Lambert said that the bobcat appears to have escaped any serious injuries and is awaiting evaluation by a veterinarian at an animal sanctuary in Scottsdale.

Officials say a couple driving in Scottsdale on Friday night hit the bobcat after it darted into their path.

Upon reaching their destination, the man inspected his Mazda sedan and saw the very much alive animal trapped in the plastic grille.

Game and Fish employees sedated the 7-pound animal and removed it.

Iran’s president: Nuclear talks a matter of heart

TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that ongoing nuclear negotiations with world powers are a matter of “heart,” not just centrifuges ahead of talks next week in Geneva.

Speaking to an economic conference in Tehran, Rouhani both countered hard-line critics worried Iran will give up too much while also attempting to signal his administration remains open to negotiation with the six-nation group leading the talks.

Mayor eulogizes officer as cops outside turn backs

By JONATHAN LEMIRE and MIKE BALSAMO The Associated Press NEW YORK – Thousands of police turned their backs Sunday as Mayor Bill de Blasio eulogized an officer shot dead with his partner, repeating a stinging display of scorn for the mayor despite entreaties to put anger aside.

The show of disrespect came outside the funeral home where officer Wenjian Liu was remembered as an incarnation of the American dream: a man who had emigrated from China at age 12 and devoted himself to helping others in his adopted country. The gesture among officers watching the mayor’s speech on a screen added to tensions between the mayor and rank-and-file police even as he sought to quiet them.

“Let us move forward by strengthening the bonds that unite us, and let us work together to attain peace,” de

Blasio said at the funeral.

Liu, 32, had served as a policeman for seven years and was married just two months when he was killed with his partner, officer Rafael Ramos, on Dec. 20. Liu’s longtime aspiration to become a police officer deepened after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, his father, Wei Tang Liu, said through tears.

And as he finished his daily work, the only child would call to say: “I’m coming home today. You can stop worrying now,” the father recalled during a service that blended police tradition with references to Buddha’s teachings.

Dignitaries including FBI Director James Comey and members of Congress joined police officers from around the country in a throng of more than 10,000 mourners.

“When one of us loses our lives, we have to come together,” said officer Lucas Grant of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in Augusta, Georgia.

After hundreds of officers turned their backs to a screen where de Blasio’s remarks played during Ramos’ funeral last week, Police Commissioner William Bratton sent a memo urging respect, declaring “a hero’s funeral is about grieving, not grievance.”

But some officers and police retirees said they still felt compelled to spurn the mayor. Police union leaders have said he contributed to an environment that allowed the officers’ slayings by supporting protests following the police killings of Eric Garner on Staten Island and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

“The mayor has no respect for us. Why should we have respect for him?” said retired New York Police Department Detective Camille Sanfilippo, who was among those who turned their backs Sunday.

Retired NYPD Sgt. Laurie Carson called the action “our only way to show our displeasure with the mayor.”

Plane crash survivor may help probe

By TIMOTHY D. EASLEY The Associated Press EDDYVILLE, Ky. – Sailor Gutzler, the 7-year-old girl who survived a plane crash, walked a mile through the cold, dark woods to safety and then helped authorities locate the wreckage and remains of her family, may not be done helping investigators.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Heidi Moats said Sunday that Sailor is “one remarkable young lady,” and she might be able to assist them in determining what brought the plane down.

It is rare for someone to survive a small plane crash and Moats said they want to talk to Sailor about it.

“Having someone that is a witness [is] always helpful in the investigation, it gives us kind of a story line,” Moats said.

It’s not clear when investigators might talk to Sailor, who despite being bloodied and suffering a broken wrist, pulled herself from the wreckage and walked to the nearest home.

She was dressed for Florida, where her family had been visiting, and was wearing shorts, a short-sleeve shirt and only one sock when she

N. Korea blasts U.S. for sanctions over Sony attack The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea on Sunday criticized the United States for slapping sanctions on Pyongyang officials and organizations for a cyberattack on Sony Pictures – the latest fallout from a Hollywood movie depicting the fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. An unnamed spokesman for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry denied any role in the breach of tens of thousands of confidential Sony emails and business files and accused the United States of

“groundlessly” stirring up hostility toward Pyongyang.

The spokesman said the new sanctions would not weaken the country’s military.

The spokesman told the North’s official media mouthpiece, the Korean Central News Agency, that the sanctions show America’s “inveterate repugnancy and hostility toward the DPRK,” referring to the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“The policy persistently pursued by the U.S. to stifle the DPRK, groundlessly stirring up bad blood toward it, would only harden its will and

resolution to defend the sovereignty of the country,” the spokesman said.

The United States on Friday sanctioned 10 North Korean government officials and three organizations, including Pyongyang’s primary intelligence agency and state-run arms dealer, in what the White House described as an opening move in the response toward the Sony cyberattack.

The sanctions might have only a limited effect, as North Korea already is under tough U.S. and international sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs.

PA-34 plane were moved Sunday so officials with the NTSB can inspect it. They haven’t discussed any possibilities of what brought the plane down or how Sailor survived the crash.

The agency will issue a preliminary report in about 10 days, Moats said at a news conference in Eddyville.

Sailor was treated at a hospital and released to a relative Saturday.

After the Friday night crash, Sailor trekked to the home of 71-year-old Larry Wilkins, who answered her knock at the door and called police. Wilkins said the girl was crying and covered in blood.

“She told me that her mom and dad were dead, and she had been in a plane crash, and the plane was upside down,” Wilkins said.

Sailor was alert and able to point emergency workers looking for the plane in the right direction, said Lyon County Judge executive Wade White, who arrived at the crash site.

The crash killed Sailor’s parents, Marty Gutzler, 48; and his wife, Kimberly Gutzler, 46; Sailor’s sister, Piper Gutzler, 9; and a cousin, Sierra Wilder, 14. All were from Nashville, Illinois.

Pope picks 15 cardinals reflecting diversity

In typical fashion, the two boys basketball teams congratulated each other Saturday afternoon after Joliet Central’s 67-39 victory over Joliet West.

However, West coach Nick DiForti took an extra moment to talk with Central’s 5-foot6 senior point guard, Jerry Gillespie.

“I told him he should play like that every game,” DiForti said. “We applied pressure to him, but he handled it.”

And, he scored.

Gillespie finished with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He used his quickness to score on nice drives into the lane and his outside-shooting ability to hit 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

West sophomore Trevian Bell finished with 12 points, and nobody else on either side reached double figures.

“The big thing about Jerry is that he makes good decisions on the offensive end,” Steelmen coach Jeff Corcoran said. “He’s extra quick and can score. We need him to have the basketball in his hands. The thing he is working on, sometimes when the game gets really quick, he out-thinks himself.”

Gillespie and his teammates struggled through a December they rather would forget.

After going 4-0 in winning the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic, the Steelmen (8-5) were 3-5 in December. That included a 1-3 mark and a consolation-bracket sixth-place finish in the McDipper Christmas Tournament.

The Central team that showed up Saturday against crosstown rival West – which also entered the game 7-5 overall and was coming off a positive showing at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament – was more like the one we saw at Thanksgiving.

“At the McDipper, I think we underestimated some teams, and they beat us,” Gillespie said. “We came to practice every day this week, and the coaches were pushing us to get where we need to be.”

“I wanted to give them a day off, but to the kids’ credit, they asked to practice all three days [Wednesday, Thursday and Friday],” Corcoran said.

The Steelmen, with no starter taller than 6-foot-1 and nobody in the regular rotation taller than 6-foot-2, are 3-1 in the SouthWest Suburban

Blue, where they certainly can be a factor the rest of the season. On the other hand, the league is unforgiving.

“Our league is always rough,” Corcoran said. “But we know who we are. We had a bad December and a poor tournament in the McDipper.

I told the guys, ‘Let’s turn the calendar to January. Decem-

ber is in the past. We can play with people if we play the way we did [against West].’ ” That Steelmen held the Tigers to 22.2 percent shooting and were so dominant they built a 32-point lead at 49-17 by late in the third quarter. All of that was accomplished without one of their top players, guard Taquan Sims, who was out for disciplinary reasons.

Even without the full complement, however, if Gillespie runs the game and scores something like he did Saturday, Central will be heard from.

“Coach [Corcoran] want-

ed somebody to be a vocal leader and control the team,” Gillespie said. “I have to do that. [Fellow guard] Ternell Jordan did a good job helping out on that, too. We played hard. Malik [Fuller], Kenyon [Woodfork], Kewon [Ware], they all stepped up.”

Gillespie, who also had 26 points against Seton in Central’s only victory at the McDipper tournament, enjoys scoring points himself. What kid doesn’t? But he understands it is important he score within the flow of the offense.

“We get out of control sometimes,” he said. “We have to make a slower push sometimes. I have to get better at making sure we do that, and our team will be better.

“We have to take this game and learn from it. We have to get better every day.”

Gillespie knows his role in the process, and he wants to make it work. Perhaps that bummer of a December can remain in the rear-view mirror.

Can the Bears afford to keep Brandon Marshall?

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Depending on whose analysis of Brandon Marshall’s contract you believe, Marshall may be a lot less expensive than Jay Cutler to get rid of and his departure would serve the Bears a great deal better than Cutler’s.

Cutler certainly is overpaid and overrated as a quarterback, and he never will be voted Mr. Congeniality by his teammates. But he does have his supporters, and he’s not a problem in the locker room.

I’m sure there are Bears players who are envious or jealous or both of Cutler for his contract and A-list lifestyle.

But Cutler actually avoids the spotlight rather than hogging it, and there doesn’t seem to be any pocket of dissent or dislike among teammates who would just as soon see him gone.

On the other hand, when it comes to Marshall, more than a few of his teammates gladly would kick

in for his bus ticket out of town.

How will we know if the Bears get it right in their hires of a new general manager and head coach?

If one of their first official moves isn’t a trade or the release of Marshall, you can assume the Bears are in trouble again.

Marshall is one of the three or four best receivers in football – no question about that.

So how come in nine seasons and with five Pro Bowl selections, Marshall never has appeared in a playoff game, and both the Broncos and Dolphins couldn’t wait to get him out of their huddles and locker rooms?

The answer is because he is a nightmare off the field who spends almost all of his time making sure the spotlight is on him and no one else.

One Bears veteran described Marshall’s presence as exhausting.

Another player told me he didn’t think the locker room problems were as serious as the media painted them but did think coach Marc Trestman’s and his coaches’ biggest mistake in getting control of the room was they were afraid of

trying to handle Marshall.

How are you supposed to coach a player or trust a teammate when you never know what he’s going to say or do next?

Then there’s the question of production.

Marshall will be 31 in March as he heads into his 10th NFL season, but he is a phenomenal athlete who always seems to keep himself in top shape.

Before 2014 – his worst season since his rookie campaign, with 61 catches for 721 yards – Marshal never had missed more than two games in a seasons, and he had a string of 65 consecutive starts before missing the last three games of the season.

A gimpy ankle in at least three or four other games he did play in also limited Marshall.

It is reasonable to assume Marshall still is capable of bouncing back physically for another big season or two.

But is all the selfishness and distraction he brings with him worth it for a team desperate for a new start and a breath of fresh air in the locker room?

But it says Marshall’s 2015 salary is guaranteed only if he’s still on the roster on March 13, 2015.

Should the Bears release Marshal before March 13, they will owe him nothing but will take a $5.625 million cap hit.

Certainly, the Bears could attempt to trade Marshall, but what

they’ll find is a bare market not at all to their liking.

Knowing what Marshall’s reign of narcissism has just done to Trestman and Emery, what NFL exec in his right mind is going to deal for him?

The biggest question facing the next GM and head coach of the Bears won’t be how they can afford to cut Marshall. It will be – how can they afford to keep him?

That football czar you’ve been clamoring for the Bears to hire? The one I’ve been clamoring for, too? The one with broad powers to transform the franchise?

Yeah, well, about him: His name is Phil Emery.

And Jerry Angelo. The past two general managers were football czars with all kinds of autonomy.

The problem was that they weren’t especially good at it.

It’s the choosing of GMs that has been the issue, so Bears fans won’t have any peace of mind knowing that the same people who hired Emery – chairman George McCaskey and president Ted Phillips – are in the process of hiring his replacement.

Oh, the franchise has brought in former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi as a consultant in the selection of a GM and a coach, and he is drawing up a list of what appears to be the obvious suspects. Hiring Accorsi was McCaskey’s nod to those of you who don’t think he and his henchman, Phillips, have

VIEWS Rick Morrissey any knowledge of what has come to be known as “football.”

But to many savvy observers of this franchise, all of it appears to be more of the same.

Remember, the Bears hired Angelo as their GM in 2001 only after his name showed up on a list provided by a search firm.

At the time, Angelo was in deep disguise as the director of player personnel for the Buccaneers, then a member of the Bears’ division.

If Accorsi announces he “discovered” Emery’s replacement standing by a Packers water cooler, no one should be surprised.

Yes, the Bears need a football overlord with vast experience and success who can make all the important decisions regarding the roster. Here’s the problem: Unless there’s a way that such a man can materialize spontane-

ously, without the stamp of approval of McCaskey and Phillips, then there’s a good chance this opportunity is doomed.

The Bears need an Accorsi to be their GM – fully formed, created independently of Halas Hall, with no taint of this sad organization on him. Someone who can have a separate entrance to the building until such time it becomes clear he can’t be contaminated. Someone who has been a GM before.

What they don’t need is an Angelo trading two first-round picks and Kyle Orton to the Broncos for Jay Cutler. They don’t need an Emery compounding the mistake by signing Cutler to a two-ton contract.

Is that hindsight? Sure.

So is saying, “I wish I had noticed the stoplight had turned red.”

In the days leading up to the firings of Emery and coach Marc Trestman, there were reports the Bears might change to a Cubs-like power structure.

They would hire their version of Theo Epstein, who has complete control over

baseball operations on the North Side, and “allow” Phillips to concentrate on the business side. The meat of those reports was the part where Phillips would be moved as far away from football decisions as possible. To Moline, say.

Alas, those reports ran up against the great wall of intractability that is the Bears.

When it was announced Phillips would join McCaskey at the news conference to address the firings, it meant Phillips was going to be heavily involved in finding replacements for the not-so-dearly-departed Emery and Trestman.

It meant the cycle would continue. And so it has, with people on the Bears’ list of GM candidates more suited to the franchise’s speed – not former GMs, but scouting directors, assistant GMs and the like.

You tend to trust people who have been successful in the same job before, not relative unknowns such as Emery and Trestman. The Bears appear to be heading in that vague direction again. If your neck hurts,

it’s probably from shaking your head so often.

There’s a huge lack of trust toward the Bears in town, as there should be.

Epstein hasn’t won much in Chicago yet, but he has built up a farm system of high draft picks. Whether they turn into big-league producers remains to be seen, but fans trust him because he won two World Series with the Red Sox, because his plan makes sense to them and because he seems to know what he’s doing.

Yeah, that kind of power structure, please.

There is an incredible buzz around the Cubs heading into 2015 because they hired a manager, Joe Maddon, who had been successful as a real, live manager before. And Maddon’s presence helped in luring big-time pitcher Jon Lester through free agency.

Yeah, that kind of buzz, please.

Reed-Custer piling up points, wins

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – After dropping some close, low-scoring games in 2012, Reed-Custer boys basketball coach Mark Porter decided a different approach was necessary.

So the Comets started to implement a fast-paced, up-tempo game with an emphasis on 3-point shooting to take advantage of the skills of players in their program.

While it has been a work in progress, the dividends finally seem to be paying off in a big way for Reed-Custer, which has won 12 of its first 15 games this season.

In a day when most squads are pleased to score 60 points in a game, the Comets are averaging 90 points. ReedCuster already has gone over the century mark on three occasions.

After closing out 2014 by rallying for a 101-96 overtime win over Dwight to capture the Marseilles Holiday Tournament title, Reed-Custer began 2015 by scoring 60 points in the opening half of Friday’s 103-74 victory over Clifton Central.

“It all started a few seasons ago when we came off of a season where we averaged 40 points a game,” Porter said.

“We just seemed like we were beating our heads against the wall, so we decided that we needed to do something different for our kids. We had to do something to break out and, even if we didn’t win, we’d give ourselves an opportunity.

“We struggled a little that first year and went 9-21 but had some success at the lower levels. Last year, we went 19-12 and won a regional and played in the sectional finals.

We went from averaging 40 points a game to 64 to 77, and now we’re around 90. Each year, we’ve played a little faster but under control, and the kids think that it’s a fun way to play.”

Playing at such a frenzied pace doesn’t come by accident – it requires a lot of work. Porter and his staff make sure the Comets maximize their time in practice.

“We set a great pace in practice in order to make sure that there’s no wasted time,” Porter said. “We go from one thing to the other quickly because that’s the way we want the kids to play. Things need to be high-paced in practice so that we’re able to accomplish that in games. The kids have done a great job, and we still

have a lot of games in front of us.”

The Comets hope to improve on last year’s showing in the playoffs, when they won only their second regional title since 1977 and advanced to the sectional finals, where they fell to Paris, 60-55.

Reed-Custer never has won back-to-back regionals and last captured a sectional championship in 1963, so this squad would like to establish some history.

“We like getting the ball out – and just going and chucking up some 3s. It’s fun,” said Mason Dransfeldt. “When we’re on, the points are really pouring in. We have a lot of good athletes and a lot of leaders on the team who step up when we need it.

“I like the overall attitude of our team. We’re all positive and know that we can always come back. We set some teams goals at the beginning of the year and are ready to get it done.”

Sign of the times

Reed-Custer has a sign on the wall of its gym boasting of the number of 3s it has made this season. After hitting 11 against Central, that total sits at 205, or 13.7 a game.

But when teams try to limit the long-range threat, the Comets are content to adjust their game. When Central attempted to stop the 3s, the Comets responded with plenty of layups.

“It’s great playing with the unselfish players who are on

this team,” said Travis Schoonover, a junior who broke a Marseilles Tourney record by scoring 47 points against Dwight. “It’s great playing with this offense and system.

We’re really talented and unselfish and play together.

“Hopefully, we get the No. 1 seed in the regional so that we don’t have to play both Clifton and Mac (Bishop McNamara).

This is absolutely a perfect team. We know that we can’t live and die with the 3-ball – we have to help on defense and go to the basket.”

Schoonover is averaging 21.5 points, 4.2 assists and 4.3 steals; fellow junior Brent Headrick is scoring 17.8 points while averaging 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks.

Senior Austin Hauck (11.3 points), senior Dransfeldt (10.3 points, 5.7 rebounds), junior Tommy Shaw (7.8 points), senior Zach Zoltani (5.1 points) and junior Neil O’Donnell (4.4 assists) are other top contributors for the team.

While last year’s squad started slowly and ended strong, this season’s Comets hope their early success leads to an even better finish.

“We like to get everyone involved, and we realize who’s hot and who our shooters are and try to get them,” said Headrick, who was the MVP of the Marseilles Tournament. “When they’re guarding our 3s, we try to take what they give us and make the best of it.

“We all have certain jobs, and if one guy is off, the rest of the team is going to pick him up. It’s like a big family.

We’re off to a good start this year. One goal was to win the Christmas tournament, and we did that. We have big goals to try to match and improve on last year.”

By SCHUYLER DIXON The Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas – Tony Romo has a stirring playoff comeback to go with all the late-season disappointments.

Romo threw two touchdown passes to Terrance Williams, the second for the lead late in the fourth quarter, and the Dallas Cowboys rallied for a 24-20 wild-card win over Detroit on Sunday in their first playoff game in five years.

The Cowboys (12-5) wiped out an early two-touchdown deficit to earn a trip to Green Bay, their first postseason visit there since a heartbreaking loss to the Packers in the Ice Bowl in 1967.

“You just have to stay in the moment and understand the game,” Romo said. “It doesn’t end after the first quarter, second quarter. You just have to keep calm. I’ve played enough games to understand that. Maybe I didn’t do that as well when I was younger.”

The Lions (11-6) went 99 yards for one of two first-quarter touchdowns, but Matthew Stafford couldn’t get them in the end zone again. He fell to

0-2 in the playoffs three years after losing a wild-card game to New Orleans.

Detroit was driving with a 20-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter when referee Pete Morelli announced a pass interference penalty against Anthony Hitchens on a third-down pass to Brandon Pettigrew. But officials reversed the call without explanation, and Sam Martin had a 10-yard punt after the Lions tried to draw Dallas offside on fourth-and-1.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell said he got an explanation, but didn’t like it. “Not good enough,” he said.

Romo took the Cowboys 59 yards in 11 plays, including a 21-yard pass to Jason Witten on fourth-and-6. The winner to Williams was an 8-yarder after Romo had several seconds to throw behind an offensive line among the league’s best because Dallas has drafted linemen in the first round three of the past four years.

The Cowboys had to wait a little longer to celebrate after rookie DeMarcus Lawrence gave the Lions the ball back with a fumble after Anthony Spencer’s sack that knocked the ball loose from Stafford.

Lawrence redeemed himself on the clincher, sacking Stafford on fourth down near midfield in the final minute.

The Lions have not won a playoff game since the 1991 season, when they beat Dallas.

Dallas rode quick starts to a 4-0 December that carried it to the NFC East title, but a sluggish first quarter put the Cowboys in a hole.

Golden Tate bounced up from a flattening hit by C.J. Spillman on a punt return and beat Barry Church on a 51-yard pass to open the scoring. Church called out Tate on his radio show earlier in the week, saying the Cowboys were going to pay him back for a blindside block on linebacker Sean Lee that got Tate fined three years ago when he was with Seattle.

The Lions went up, 14-0, on a drive that amounted to 99¾ yards. After Dekoda Watson ran into Martin to keep the drive alive, the 14-play drive ended with Reggie Bush badly faking Orlando Scandrick on an 18-yard scoring run.

Williams (three catches for 92 yards) pulled the Cowboys within seven when he took a short pass from Romo 76 yards to the end zone.

NFC WILD-CARD PLAYOFF: COWBOYS 24, LIONS 20

INDIANAPOLIS – When Andrew Luck was under pressure Sunday, he stood tall and maintained his poise.

Andy Dalton and the Bengals simply collapsed. Again.

Luck delivered a game-changing touchdown pass as he was headed to the turf, and Indianapolis’ defense dominated the rest of the game as the Colts roared past Cincinnati, 26-10, and into the divisional playoff round.

“The one magical play was when Andrew was at his finest,” said coach Chuck Pagano, whose team heads to Denver next Sunday. “He’s a maestro. He’s unbelievable back there.”

For Cincinnati, a bedeviling postseason curse continued.

The Bengals (10-6-1) became the first team in NFL history to lose four consecutive opening-round games.

Dalton tied Warren Moon for the most consecutive opening-round playoff losses by a quarterback, dropping to 0-4 all-time.

Coach Marvin Lewis tied Marty Schottenheimer, Jim Mora and Steven Owen for most consecutive playoff losses (six) by a coach. Lewis also tied Mora, the former Colts coach, for most consecutive playoff losses to start a career, and tied Owen for most consecutive playoff losses with one team.

They haven’t won a playoff game since January 1991.

“It’s kind of like missing a field goal that you should have hit,” Cincinnati kicker Mike Nugent said after setting a franchise record late in the first half with a 57-yard field goal that got the Bengals within 13-10.

But the glaring difference between the postseason success for Luck and the Colts

(12-5), and the postseason failures for Dalton and the Bengals never was more apparent than on two big plays in the third quarter.

On second-and-10 from the Bengals 36, Luck floated a perfect pass to the corner of the end zone as Carlos Dunlap started to take him to the turf. Rookie receiver Donte Moncrief sprinted across the field and cradled the ball for the score that gave Indy a 2010 lead.

“I sort of stepped up in a crease there, saw Donte running his butt off and tried to put it in a spot where only he could get it,” Luck said. “He does such a great job of running underneath those balls, and we had the touch.”

On the next Bengals’ plays, Dalton had Brandon Tate open deep down the middle on a flea-flicker. But instead of scoring, Colts cornerback Greg Toler raced over and broke up the under-thrown pass. Three plays later, the Bengals punted. They never seriously challenged again.

“I thought he (Dalton) hung in there,” Lewis said. “I thought he made plays with his feet. I thought he made plays throwing the football, and I thought he played a good football game.”

Dalton, whose two top receivers were inactive, finished 18 of 35 with 155 yards and lost a fumble on a day the Bengals managed only 98 total yards and five first downs in the second half.

The Colts were much more proficient.

Luck went 31 of 44 for 376 yards, and he couldn’t be going into the next game under better circumstances. For the first time in four tries, Luck finished a playoff game without a turnover. He also joined Dan Fouts, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon and Drew Brees as the only NFL players with three straight 300yard games in the postseason.

JJC men, women capture tourney titles SUBMITTED REPORTS APPLETON, Wis. – The Joliet Junior College men’s basketball team beat Fox Valley Technical, 85-57, in the semifinals and Wisconsin-Fox Valley, 64-59, in the championship game of the Fox Valley Technical Tournament over the weekend.

The Wolves (14-2) opened the semifinal on a 19-0 run.

Darious Randolph finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds; Daymeann Stewart scored 17; and Matt Hund added 10 points, 10 boards and four blocked shots.

“Obviously, we really liked the start of the game,” coach Joe Kuhn said. “We came out aggressive on both ends of the floor and put the game away with that 19-0 run.”

Wisconsin-Fox Valley entered the title game with a 9-2 record. Randolph led JJC with

19 points and eight rebounds, and Hund had eight points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots. Stewart scored 11 and Darius Wells 10. The Wolves held their foe’s leading scorer, Jon Braeger, to seven points.

“We had a hard time finding any rhythm on offense, which made this a difficult game, but the defense we played on Braeger was outstanding,” Kuhn said.

At Kirksville, Missouri, No. 2-ranked Lewis matched the longest winning streak in program history with its 13th straight as juniors Jamie Johnson and Mariyah Brawner-Henley each passed 1,000 career points at the same place Flyers coach Lisa Carlsen played her college basketball.

The Flyers (13-0, 3-0 in the GLVC) never trailed – scoring the first six points – and they led, 51-27, at the half. Johnson finished with 18 points and six assists. Brawner-Henley recorded 27 points, 21 rebounds, four assists, four steals, a block and no turnovers.

“Mariyah and Jamie are arguably the best post/guard combo in the league,” Carlsen said. “It’s a great accomplishment for both, but they have their sights set on bigger things as leaders of this team.”

Truman State is 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC.

Ravens eye Patriots after dismissing Steelers

By DAVID GINSBURG The Associated Press The Baltimore Ravens had just knocked off their despised rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it was time to distribute game balls.

One of the stars of the 3017 wild-card victory Saturday night was linebacker Terrell Suggs, whose zany, betweenthe-legs interception virtually sealed a trip to New England for Round 2 of the AFC playoffs.

“We just gave him the game ball for the greatest catch in the history of football,” coach John Harbaugh said. “I toss it to him. What happened, do you think? He dropped it. He caught the one that mattered. Clutch.”

Clutch, indeed. Just like the Ravens, who sputtered into the postseason as the No. 6 seed before playing their best game of the year at a time when it counted most.

“We were on top of our game,” quarterback Joe Flacco said.

It didn’t matter that the Ravens lost, 43-23, in Pittsburgh in November, or that they needed a 17-point fourth quarter in the finale against Cleveland – along with a San Diego loss in Kansas City – just to qualify for the postseason.

Facing the AFC North champions on the road as un-

derdogs, Baltimore opened the playoffs with a victory for the sixth time in six tries under Harbaugh. The Ravens are 7-4 on the road in the postseason since Harbaugh took over in 2008.

“We’ve been on the road a lot in the playoffs,” Harbaugh said. “Maybe that’s it.”

Playing in Pittsburgh was a mere inconvenience compared to what the Ravens have endured this year. The suspension and subsequent release of running back Ray Rice, the four-game suspension of Haloti Ngata, and injuries to a slew of cornerbacks merely primed the team for a postseason run.

“You don’t let adversity get you down. When things go the wrong way, you stick together and come out and keep fighting,” Harbaugh said. “Our guys have done that all year.

You know over time that pays off.”

Flacco, the revamped secondary and a shuffled offensive line all came up big against the Steelers. So did Suggs, a 12-year veteran of this rivalry who never before experienced the thrill of beating Pittsburgh in January.

With the Ravens clinging to a 23-15 lead in the fourth quarter, Suggs was tumbling to the ground when he got his hands on a deflected pass thrown by Ben Roethlisberger. The ball

slipped from his grasp, but Suggs secured it between his legs while rolling on the turf.

“Big-time play from a bigtime guy,” Baltimore linebacker Pernell McPhee said.

“Whenever my time is done on the field, they could say I never beat the Steelers in the playoffs. They can’t say that now,” Suggs declared. “It was a great achievement, but it’s short-lived. We all know who we’re dealing with next.”

The Ravens have no fear about facing top-seeded New England on Saturday. Baltimore is 2-1 against the Patriots on the road in the playoffs, including a 28-13 triumph in January 2013 that preceded a 34-31 victory over San Francisco in the Super Bowl.

“They’re a very wellcoached team, a very talented team, so we just have to prepare hard for it,” said linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who had two sacks. “It’s going to be a tough challenge, and we know that. But we’re looking forward to that challenge.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Patrick Sharp scored 1:17 into overtime to give the Blackhawks a 5-4 win over Dallas on Sunday night and snap the Stars’ four-game winning streak.

Sharp drove past Jason Spezza down the slot, took Duncan Keith’s feed from the left point and beat Kari Lehtonen with a shot that slipped between the goalie’s body and his blocker.

The Hawks’ Brad Richards fooled Lehtonen with an im-

probable sharp-angle shot with 3:57 left in the third period to tie it at 4 and set up overtime. Richards whipped the puck from the goal line at the left boards, and it slipped between Lehtonen’s elbow and the goalpost.

Brandon Saad, Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell scored for the Hawks, who came back from four one-goal deficits to win.

Erik Cole had two goals and an assist for the Stars. Jamie Benn and his brother, Jordie, also scored for Dallas.

Longtime ESPN sportscaster Scott dies after cancer battle The ASSOCIATED PRESS Stuart Scott was in his element, working a “Monday Night Football” game, when he was forced to leave for an appendix operation.

Doctors discovered a tumor during surgery and Scott was diagnosed with cancer. But he made a point of continuing to live his life – at work and outside of it.

“You beat cancer by how you live,” he would later say.

“So live. Live. Fight like hell.”

That fight ended Sunday when Scott, the longtime “SportsCenter” anchor and ESPN personality known for his enthusiasm and ubiquity, died at age 49.

Scott remained dedicated to his craft even as he suffered through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

ESPN President John Skip-

per said in a statement that Scott was “a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure” and that his Stuart Scott “energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced.”

Skipper also marveled at Scott’s dedication to keep fighting – literally.

“Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments?” he said. “Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set?”

Fans and players at games around the U.S. on Sunday stopped to observe moments of silence.

At the end of last week, I described a couple of deals featuring junior players, for which the age limit is 26 at the moment. In November, I watched a game including Sam Hanser of Saint Louis, who is only 13 years old. In this deal, Hanser handled the ending nicely, overcoming the bad trump break.

Given the adverse vulnerability and the unimpressive long suit, opening two spades was sensible.

West led a low diamond.

Hanser ruffed East’s 10 and led his club six. Although second hand low is right most of the time, here South was marked with some club length, given his diamond void. So West should have won with her ace, but she ducked.

After winning with dummy’s king, declarer (not best) played another club. East should have discarded a heart, but she threw a diamond. West won with her ace and gave her partner a club ruff. East now pushed through a trump, South’s nine losing to West’s king.

South ruffed West’s diamond exit and led a low trump, getting the bad news. But declarer ruffed the next diamond and played a heart to dummy’s queen, bringing everyone down to four cards.

Dummy had the ace-seven of hearts and two high clubs. East held the ace-jack of spades and two diamonds. South retained the queen-eight of spades and king-five of hearts.

Declarer led a winning club. If East had ruffed low, South would have overruffed and played winners. When East discarded on dummy’s last two clubs, at trick 12 declarer led a heart through East’s ace-jack of spades toward his queen-eight. South lost only four spades and one club.

appetite. Or perhaps something else going on in your life caused your depression to get worse.

Your cravings could also be unrelated to your depression. If you never had cravings or weight gain when you were depressed before, it’s not very likely that depression is causing them now.

Taking your age into consideration, it’s possible that perimenopause or menopause is responsible. Some women experience an increase in cravings and appetite during that time. Or maybe your activity level has changed.

Finally, a medical problem may be causing a shift in your eating pattern. Among the more common are hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing’s disease or syndrome, and rare diseases of a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Some people with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome report periodic craving of food (not just sweets).

The craving can be so severe that until they eat, they really don’t think they can function.

Your craving for sweets is a new experience for you. Also, you are likely on medicines that can trigger appetite in some people. For those reasons, you should ask your doctor if your medicines (or a change in the dose) could explain your sudden craving. A general health review may provide more clues and help you get the problem under control.

Dear Doctor K: I am a 50-year-old woman with a history of depression.

I recently developed an uncontrollable craving for sweets, which has increased my weight. Is it my depression or my medicine?

Dear Reader: You are right to wonder about the cause of your craving.

It could be triggered by your depression or by the medicine you are taking to manage it. Or by something else entirely.

Let’s start with depression. Changes in appetite and weight are common symptoms. Weight can go up or down. Some people lose their appetite completely, along with all interest in food. Others with depression experience the opposite and can’t stop eating.

Increased appetite and weight gain are more common in some types of depression than others. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is one example. SAD is a type of depression that seems to be triggered by reduced exposure to daylight.

It typically comes on during the fall or winter months and subsides in the spring.

But there are no hard-and-fast rules about depression and appetite.

Any type of depression can be accompanied by weight gain or loss.

Some medicines can also induce cravings and weight gain, including those that are used longterm to treat depression, psychosis, epilepsy and diabetes (except metformin).

You mentioned that your craving for sweets intensified recently.

Have you started a new medication? Did your dose increase or decrease? A higher dose could have increased side effects, including cravings. On the flip side, a decreased dose may have led to the return of depression symptoms, including increased

We have been together for five years. He’s in a wheelchair and has been since he was a child. I love him very much and am ready to be his wife.

Every time I would tell my mother we planned to be married, she’d give me a thousand reasons why marrying the man I love would be stupid.

We are now at a point in our lives where we are financially stable and are finally ready. When I told Mom, she called me selfish and said she won’t be there. I am heartbroken.

Am I a horrible person for marrying the man I love despite the fact that my family can’t accept his disability? Dear Uncounted: I think you should contact your father, start a dialogue with him and ask why he dropped out of your life.

His reason may be that he was made to feel that his presence in your life was unwelcome, or a fear that you would not be able to accept his sexual orientation.

It seems strange to me that he would leave his daughters behind for no reason.
