Union Station – Joliet The need for a new railroad station in Joliet was prompted by the relocation and elevation of street level railroad tracks in the downtown area.

Civic and business leaders, together with various railroad companies, agreed to undertake the project to reroute and elevate their tracks in order to reduce congestion.

In Joliet, the idea for a new railroad station was not actually part of the original elevation project, but once ground was broken on the project on May 25, 1908, the construction of the station was hastened toward completion in conjunction with elevating the tracks downtown.

Union Station was designed and constructed between 1908-1912 at a cost of nearly $250,000. Jarvis Hunt, a nephew of the iconic 19th-century architect Richard Morris Hunt, was the architect for the new structure.

In Chicago, his best-known works are the American Trust and Savings Bank, the Lake Shore Club, the original group of buildings at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and the 900 North Michigan Avenue Building.

The Adam Groth Company of Joliet was the general contractor for Union Station.

Germany, learned the cut stone building trade from his father and arrived in Joliet and started his cut stone and contracting business in 1895.

The Adam Groth and Company was known for its interior marble work as well as for its fine exterior cut stone. Much of the stone that Groth used came from Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Joliet quarries.

Groundbreaking for the construction of the new station was held on July 31, 1911.

The structure was designed

by Hunt in a Neo-Classical Revival style using local Bedford limestone that was cut and polished by Groth. The two-story oblong hexagonal building faces the track intersection with flanking angled wings on each side. Stairs on either end of the station allow passengers to climb nearly twenty feet to the elevated level of the newly designed tracks.

Similar Romanesque windows are repeated on the track side of the building, making the street and track facades symmetrical. Ornamental, flat-roof canopies can be found above the entry doors on both sides of the building.

Union Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

In 1991, the station was completely renovated as part of the City Center revitalization program. In September 2014, Union Station was closed to commuter traffic as Joliet

began the first phase of the Gateway Transportation Center project.

A new train station is part of the Gateway Transportation Center project, which includes a bus station and the converting the old Union Station for commercial uses.

The entire project is estimated to cost more than $40 million dollars, with parts scheduled to be completed by summer 2016.

SOS Children’s Village in Lockport provides foster care

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Sandra Marbeth never had children of her own – but she always wanted to be a mom.

She got her chance when she became a foster parent for SOS Children’s Village in Lockport, where she raised 41 children and adopted six. God blessed her with a home and children, she said.

One of her daughters who grew up in the village decided to have it be the place for her wedding reception. She now works for the village, Marbeth said.

“I think for me it’s full circle. SOS gave to her, and she in turn is giving back to SOS,” she said.

It’s not just her child who has given back to SOS: The Lockport community also has given back to the international nonprofit child care provider that began in Austria after World War II. That local support has been key for the organization that allows parents such as Marbeth to care for children in need of a protective family environment.

“To the credit of this community, they quickly found out and committed – which is probably important in today’s society – that the more we invest in our children, the better society we will have,” said Tim McCormick, SOS Children’s Villages Illinois CEO.

Paving the way

SOS Children’s Villages provides foster care where children live with their siblings in an SOS single-family home with a full-time professional foster parent.

While SOS Children’s Villages runs more than 2,100 facilities and programs worldwide, Illinois and Florida are the only two states in the U.S. that have villages.

Lockport was the first to become the site for one, when the SOS village opened in 1993.

“What is interesting is that at the very beginning, no one knew what it was. The local community didn’t know what it was. There was a lot of education,” McCormick said.

Lockport was chosen for

three reasons, McCormick said: It provided a big enough footprint to create a village, there was an emerging need for foster care in the area, and there was community support.

The support has come from local volunteers and major companies, such as Imperial Crane Services.

The success of the SOS Children’s Village model in Lockport paved the way for future villages in Chicago, McCormick said. The organization has two villages in that city.

“I think, in many ways, Lockport was the very fertile ground to show in the state of Illinois how this process could work,” he said.

Raising foster children

The process has been rewarding for three foster par-

ents, including Marbeth.

Michelle Haldeman, who’s worked at the Lockport SOS Village since the beginning, said the experience is rewarding as she sees her children change and grow. They have been integrated with her biological family and, as a result, have aunts and cousins.

“One of my kids, when she turned 6, she came to me and said ‘Someone called me a foster kid; what is that?’ She didn’t even know she was in foster care until later on,” Haldeman said.

When Joy Herth – a foster parent for five years in Lockport – was growing up, she always knew she wanted to work with children. She once struggled with knowing what she wanted to do with her life before focusing on working in a foster care agency.

When she discovered SOS Children’s Village, she knew it was where she wanted to be.

It’s not always easy raising foster children who will push back to see if a foster parent will truly stay with them, Herth said. Children will sometimes hit, fight and call others names.

“You always have to remind yourself of why you came in the first place,” she said.

McCormick said children in foster care today are the kind people see as more behaviorally and medically complex than in the past.

Before coming under the care of foster parents at SOS Children’s Village, those children already have met adults who have failed them, he said.

“It could be the school system, it could be their own biological parents, it could be other foster parents. … That child says, ‘Well, how are you going to be different than anyone else I’ve met?’ And they test that, and at some point in

Joliet preparing its case to get train station built

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city will try again this month to get the new Joliet train station on track.

The city’s downtown public transit project has been on hold since August when the Illinois Department of Transportation would not award bids for the new train station.

The train station is part of a plan that includes a bus station and new commuter platforms. But money ran out for the project and state officials would not move forward with Joliet’s plan to build the train station now and the bus station later when more money was available.

“We think the money can be found. We just need time to do that,” said Steve Jones, special projects manager for Joliet.

Jones has been meeting with representatives from IDOT, Metra, Pace and Amtrak to work out a possible funding solution, which he hopes to present to IDOT as

The state has control over the project, since it has provided $30 million in grants to pay for most of it. Originally estimated to cost $42 million, the project now is pegged at $49.7 million.

An IDOT spokesman has

said the state wants to keep its financial commitment to all transportation agencies involved in the project.

But Pace, the suburban bus service that runs in Joliet and would use the new bus station, is willing to wait for the facility.

“We are supportive of the city position to complete the rail portion of the project,” said Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot. “Then, we will work with them later on to complete the bus portion.”

Jones said there is enough money in the project budget

to build the train station and a new commuter platform.

But there would be $1.9 million left for a bus station with turnaround area for buses, which is estimated to cost $6.8 million.

Joliet is trying to fill the roughly $4 million gap in part by putting in more of its own money and in part by seeking more money from the transportation agencies that will use the transit center. Jones said he is waiting on a response from Metra, which he hopes to have before going to IDOT with a proposal.

Meanwhile, he also contacted the offices of U.S. senators Richard Durbin and Mark Kirk, hoping to get funding from a transportation bill approved in December.

“We do know that the new transportation bill has funding for buses and bus facilities,” Jones said. “The key is, can we get potential federal funding to build Pace [the bus station]? It’s going to take time, so why not start with what we can build now?”

Joliet attorney Carey retires, looks back at Rialto years

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – This will be the first year since the formation of the authority that governs the Rialto Square Theatre that the theater will be without the legal services of Thomas Carey. Thomas C a r e y r e - Carey tired from his law practice at the end of 2015 after a career that spanned 40 years, and through most of that career he has served as the Rialto’s attorney – much of it without charging for his work.

“With their financial struggles, I decided they would be my pro bono project,” said

Carey, noting lawyers are required to do some form of legal service at no charge each year.

“That has been the case since the mid-’90s.”

Rialto board members at a recent meeting expressed their appreciation for Carey’s work through the decades.

“There’s a lot of people who don’t know that Tom was totally pro bono,” said James Smith, a Rialto board member since 1996. “I can’t tell you how many times we prevailed on Tom Carey.”

New board Chairman Dan Vera said Carey has done “an excellent job” for the Rialto since the entity that governs the Rialto was formed in 1978.

Most of Carey’s legal career actually has been devoted to real estate law. His clients included Spring Realty, the

Joliet real estate agency and home builder that was very active during the housing boom years.

His career began in 1975 as a prosecutor in the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Carey was just a few years into his career, working on the staff of the Legal Department at the City of Joliet, when he became involved with the Rialto. The city with the state of Illinois created the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the formal name of the entity typically called the Rialto board.

Carey was the staff attorney assigned to draw up the papers that transferred the deed to the theater from the Rubens family, which built the Rialto in 1926, to the newly formed authority.

Having been involved with the Rialto since the authority’s beginning, Carey is well aware that controversies over Rialto funding, such as recent questions raised about the city’s $600,000 annual contribution to the theater, are not new.

He also knows the city has been involved with the Rialto from the start.

“The city was the triggering force to create the Rialto,” he said.

Carey did not plan to stay involved with the Rialto and left the city staff for private practice. But the newly formed authority was familiar with Carey and asked him to do legal work, which he did until the end of 2015.

He has good memories from the early years and the people who worked to revive the Ri-

alto.

“They had some real good artisans who came in and did work on the theater. At the time it was fairly run down,” Carey said. “I got to know Dorothy Mavrich very well. She was a good lady.”

Mavrich, the woman who led a grassroots effort to save the Rialto from demolition, died Feb. 10.

Carey plans to remain a Joliet resident. Retirement plans include travel and spending more time with grandchildren.

As for the Rialto and recent issues surrounding the theater, he said, “I just hope that things settle down for them and that any controversy be eliminated, and that the Rialto foundation receives the kind of community support it needs.”

Adopt a snowman for MS in Minooka Most people have something special they like to collect. For Teresa Puralewski, it was snowmen.

When Puralewski passed away at the age of 62 in 2011 from complications of multiple sclerosis, she left behind an amazing collection of snowmen.

After her mom died, Dawn Sphumpert couldn’t bear to part with the collection that had grown so big it’s been housed in boxes in Sphumpert’s basement, in a friend’s basement and in a storage unit.

Now, nearly five years later, Sphumpert is ready to give up her mom’s beloved figures, pillows, kitchen- and bathroom-ware and trinkets,

but they will only be given to those who want to give them a loving home.

That’s how Sphumpert came up with the idea to adopt out all of the snowmen and hold a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis at the same time.

“I didn’t want to just drop them off at The Salvation Army, she wouldn’t have wanted that,” said Sphumpert. “She wanted to have a snowman museum.”

From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Saturday in the village of Minooka community room

(121 E. McEvilly Road), anyone is welcome to come by, browse the collection and take home one or more snowmen to cherish.

There will be snowmen games for kids, a Frosty the Snowman movie on the big screen and Frosty the Snowman in person to visit with the children. There also will be snacks available for purchase.

There’s no entry fee or cost for the event, or even to adopt a snowman, but donations will be accepted for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The event is a way Sphumpert feels she can honor her mother and find special homes for as many of her mom’s beloved snowmen as

she can. She also believes the adoption event idea came from her mom.

“It would be something she would think of,” Sphumpert said. “She was a very unique person.”

For the last 11 years of her life, Puralewski resided at Meadowbrook Manor in Bolingbrook after an incident in which she broke her leg.

While there, Puralewski made friends with everyone and took people under her wing. People would be put in her path for a reason, Sphumpert said.

Puralewski continued collecting the snowmen all the while she lived in the facility.

No one would believe how many she had by the time she

passed away, Sphumpert said.

The event should be really fun and unique, she said, and Sphumpert hopes to draw not only children to the activities but teens and adults who also share her mom’s love of snowmen.

“I want them to find a special home with someone else to love them as much as my mom did,” Sphumpert said.

“What better way [is there than] to have her snowmen find a home and raise money for multiple sclerosis at the same time.”

“He actually tried selling cars for couple of months,” Sharon said, “and then he went into the airlines.”

Through the years, Bill worked for North Central Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Republic Airlines and Delta Air Lines, from which Bill retired at the age of 60, which Sharon said was the mandatory retirement age at the time.

Sharon said she and Wanda flew to Houston with Bill.

When the plane landed, it was announced to passengers that their pilot had just completed his last flight, Sharon said. Bill then was brought out for an introduction and a few cheers.

But Bill, “a tough, stoic German,” just stood there,

not knowing what to say, Sharon said.

“He had a little smile on his face,” she said. “He appreciated it, and we appreciated it.”

Bill woodworked for a few months in his basement workshop and then began his charter service, which he ran for 10 years until ill health intervened. But Bill, often seen with a pipe in his mouth, had other interests to occupy him.

He loved gardening, as well as collecting and researching the history of antique guns, especially those from the Civil War period, Sharon said. Several magazines published accounts Bill wrote regarding that research, she said.

Toward the end of Bill’s life – he was 93 when he died Aug. 2 – Bill enjoyed sitting among his beloved oaks, watching the birds and feeding the raccoon that lived under his deck. It was a perfect life.

“He had his Siamese cats he loved,” Sharon said. “And Mom.”

JOLIET – It was the 1960s and Willis “Bill” Schubert, a commercial airplane pilot, was about to take off when a hijacker came aboard.

But Bill simply backed up to the gate and officials boarded to arrest the man, said his daughter, Sharon Perinar of Minooka. On another occasion, Bill popped a Siamese kitten he found in Minnesota into his briefcase and let out “the screaming little creature” inside the cockpit.

“He always loved Siamese cats,” Sharon said. “To this day, I have two staring at me.”

Bill, of Joliet, started his aviation career as a bomber pilot in World War II and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. Later, Bill served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and then worked as a commercial pilot before starting a charter service teaching aviation in Joliet and Bolingbrook.

Through the years, Bill had many flying adventures.

He flew U.S. diplomats out of Cuba when Fidel Castro assumed power and one of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s daughters to diplomat dinners, Sharon said.

“When he’d come home, Mom would have an egg sandwich for him, and he’d report on his flight,” Sharon said.

When Bill was in the reserves, his late wife, Wanda, often traveled with him, Sharon said. Bill met her when he was stationed in Oklahoma and Wanda, who was from Arkansas, was visiting the state to care for a sick aunt.

“He saw her in a restaurant and said, ‘That’s the girl I’m going to marry,’ and they got married two months later,” Sharon said. “They were married 70 years.”

Sharon said she was born the following year and stayed with her grandmother when her parents traveled. But

WILLIAM E. AUSTIN JR. William E. Austin Jr., age 65, known to his friends and family as “Night Hawk,” was the son of the late William Sr. and Margaret A. Austin. Born in DeLand, Florida, Nov. 12, 1950.

Night Hawk graduated from high school and entered Bethune-Cookman College when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, a Vietnam veteran, 173rd Airborne Brigade, AKA “The Herd”.

He departed this life on Dec. 23, 2015, at Silver Cross Hospital.

He leaves to mourn a devoted wife, Tracy Smith-Austin; mother-in law, Betty Smith; two sisters, Bettye Gavin (Archie), Joliet, IL and Karen Scruggs (George), Decatur, Alabama; one brother, Wayne Austin (Nora) Seville, FL; children; one daughter, Patronda Austin, DeLand, FL; sons, William Austin III, Joliet, IL, Kevin Woody, Palm Beach, FL, and Richard Austin, Atlanta, Georgia; godson, Mar’Shawn Tyrel McCullum; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; cousins, Ronnie and Timothy Williams. Bob was co-owner and operator of Joliet United Auto for over 30 years along with his brother, Charlie.

His spirit lives on in all of us.

CHICAGO – The furor over recent Chicago police shootings has legislators considering whether voters should be allowed to recall Mayor Rahm Emanuel or future officials who hold his post.

Illinois state law currently addresses only the recall of a governor, a provision voters approved in 2010 after former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested and impeached. Now, state Rep. La Shawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat, wants voters to also have the power to remove the mayor of the country’s third-largest city.

In light of the unrest in the city, Ford said, “It’s clearly the right thing to have on the books.”

But what about mayors in other Illinois cities?

What about state lawmakers? How does Illinois compare to other states when it comes to recalls? Here’s a closer look at those questions and the particulars of Ford’s measure.

FORD’S RECALL PROPOSAL

Ford introduced his bill Dec. 9, the day Emanuel addressed the Chicago City Council and apologized for the death of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white police officer in October 2014. Emanuel’s apology came a couple of weeks after the release of police dashcam video that appeared to show McDonald walking away from officers when he was shot. The video triggered protests and calls for Emanuel’s resignation.

Emanuel has said he won’t step down.

“We understand there’s a desire by some to insert politics into this discussion, but the mayor’s focus is not on his own personal politics,” Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins said in a statement. “His focus is on taking the action necessary to finally and fully address

an issue that has challenged Chicago for decades, and reform the system and culture of policing in Chicago.”

Under Ford’s proposal, two city aldermen would have to sign an affidavit agreeing with a recall petition and organizers must collect more than 88,000 signatures from registered voters in the city. At least 50 signatures must come from each of 50 wards.

The proposal would preempt local law, so it needs approval from two-thirds of each chamber of the Illinois Legislature to pass during the session that starts this month. The bill would be effective immediately if signed into law, a scenario that can pose legal questions because it would target someone currently in office, said David Melton, executive director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER OFFICEHOLDERS?

Ford said in the coming weeks he’ll be holding town hall meetings in his district to get constituents’ thoughts about the bill and whether it should be expanded to include recall provisions for other officeholders, including other mayors. He said he’s willing to consider also including lawmakers but said he didn’t do so initially because legislators don’t wield the same authority as statewide officeholders or the Chicago mayor.

Nineteen states and the District of Columbia allow recalls of state and local officials, according to Joshua Spivak, a recall expert at the Hugh L. Carey Institute for Government Reform at Wagner College in New York City.

Illinois is included in that count but is unique in that its constitution has guidelines for the recall of only the governor.

“There’s no jurisdiction I know of that have just one guy [open to recall],” Spivak said.

James will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend and will be truly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Illinois, Missouri assess their damage, cleanup after flooding

By JIM SALTER and JIM SUHR The Associated Press KINCAID – The Mississippi River and many of its tributaries continued their retreat Sunday from historic and deadly winter flooding, leaving amid the silt a massive cleanup and recovery effort likely to take weeks if not months.

The flood, fueled by more than 10 inches of rain over a three-day period that began Christmas Day, is blamed for 25 deaths in Illinois and Missouri, reflecting Sunday’s discovery of the body of a second teenager who drowned in central Illinois’ Christian County.

The Mississippi River was receding except in the far southern tip of both states.

The Meramec River, the St. Louis-area tributary of the Mississippi that caused so much damage last week, already was below flood stage in the hard-hit Missouri towns of Pacific and Eureka and dropping elsewhere.

Sunday along the still-rising Illinois River north of St. Louis, where crests near the west-central Illinois towns of Valley City, Meredosia, Beardstown and Havana were to approach records before receding in coming days.

In Kincaid, a 1,400-resident central Illinois town near the South Fork Sangamon River, Gov. Bruce Rauner toured flood-damaged homes Sunday as Sharon Stivers and other residents piled ruined furniture, appliances and clothes along the street for disposal crews to pick up.

Mike Crews, Christian County’s emergency manager, said the worst of the inundation appeared to be past, “until the new weather comes,” citing the prospect of potentially heavy rain later in the week.

Stivers shares a home with her 45-year-old daughter battling breast cancer, along with a granddaughter and four dogs. Floodwaters got 4 feet into their home, located in an area where flood insurance wasn’t available.

“Am I mad?” she asked. “I lost my home. My daughter has cancer and lost her home.

Across the street, Theresa Gibson was getting help from relatives and friends clearing out what they could salvage after the flood reached 18 inches into her home, buckling newly finished oak floors and saturating walls.

In Illinois’ Morgan County, home to the 1,000-resident village of Meredosia, locals were keeping wary eyes on levees fortified with 50,000 sandbags. As of midday Sunday at Meredosia, the Illinois was more than 10 feet above flood stage and pressing toward an expected crest Tuesday roughly a half-foot short of the record set in July.

While optimistic those levees would hold, Jacksonville-Morgan County Emergency Management Director Phil McCarty said the prospect of flooding during the chill of winter carried dangerous health risks, including hypothermia.

Expectations for Fox, Pace will be raised dramatically after this season What should we make of the Bears’ 24-20 loss to the Lions on Sunday to close out the 2015 season?

From the opener 17 weeks ago, they were without their No. 2 running back, top three receivers, top two tight ends, top two centers, top four defensive linemen and starting strong safety – and Shea McClellin was active but invisible.

In Week 1, they were a consensus pick to finish last

in the NFC North. Now they have.

Do you want pipe dreams or reality? 2015 was the first year of at least a three-year rebuilding program.

Based on opening-day expectations and how short-handed they were, I don’t see how you can be anything but impressed by the fight they put up against the Lions and how close they came to stealing a win.

But you can’t be happy,

Still, at this time a year ago, the Bears were the laughingstock of the NFL. Now, they’re a team short on talent but with a growing reputation for their effort,

Now, you have a quarterback for now and the future, Cutler, and your greatest fear is that the offensive and defensive coordinators will be pilfered to be head coaches on other teams.

While a loss is a loss, the Lions game still capped what

has been a good but not great first year for the Ryan Pace/ John Fox regime.

Now the honeymoon is over. Better than last year won’t be good enough a year from now. Step 2 of the rebuilding plan should be to win nine or 10 games and sneak into the back end of the playoffs.

Former University of St. Francis basketball player Shawn Green was at center court with his family to present the game ball. Green, a 1997 USF graduate, is battling through setbacks from his recurrence of brain cancer.

The entire gate – $3,100, all via donation from the large crowd – from Saturday afternoon’s St. Francis versus Lewis men’s basketball game at the Sullivan Center on the USF campus went to the Green family in an effort to help offset their medical expenses.

Then came the stunning game itself. Regardless of where your loyalties lie, it is difficult to imagine the Saints dominating Lewis the way they did.

USF won, 75-55, in a game that never was closer than 14 points in the second half.

Granted, St. Francis (13-1) is excellent. The Saints are ranked No. 2 in the nation in NAIA Division II. They beat defending national champion and No. 5-ranked Cornerstone a few days earlier.

Lewis (9-3) hardly is a pushover, never has been and never will be under coach Scott Trost. The Flyers, always a contender in the Great Lakes Valley Conference – which many feel is the best NCAA Division II league in the nation, had won 42 straight against NAIA opponents before Saturday.

Lewis had beaten St. Francis 13 straight.

As veteran-laden and talented as USF is, you might have felt beating Lewis may be too tall of a task, especially with Saints center Jens Kennedy still sidelined, the aftermath of a concussion.

“I couldn’t have drawn it up any better,” USF coach Ryan Marks said afterward.

“These are the kinds of games teams like Cornerstone and Lewis have won a lot, consistently, over the years. We feel we are on the threshold.”

“This was a big, big, big confidence booster for us,” said USF senior forward Ilya Ilyayev, who finished with 24 points and 17 rebounds. “I thought we could beat Lewis, but I didn’t expect to beat them like this.”

Ilyayev already has been the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week three times this season, including the past two weeks. He averages a CCAC-leading 23.6 points and 9.3 rebounds, which is in the top five in the league. He is shooting .515 from the field and .817 from the free-throw line.

“Ilya is truly a kid wanting to be the best he can be,” Marks said. “He is playing at the highest level now. He was scoring and getting a decent number of rebounds earlier, but his defense and setting picks and those things had to come along with that.”

Kennedy, incidentally, is averaging 17.9 points and 7.0 rebounds, giving USF as potent a 1-2 punch as there is anywhere.

St. Francis’ goal, in fact, is the summit.

“I played with a lot of awesome players and future Hall of Famers,” center Matt Slauson said. “But Matt, to me, is the absolute best. … The guy is the best NFL player I’ve ever played with.”

Forte finished the game with 76 rushing yards on 17 carries, three receptions for 34 yards and the receiving touchdown.

His 110 yards pushed his career yards from scrimmage to 12,718.

The touchdown made 64 for his career.

He remains, at 30, a productive back. Despite missing three games with a knee injury, he finished the season with 898 yards and four touchdowns rushing, leading the way in a three-headed backfield.

“It’s hard to explain how much I learned from him,” Langford said. “I’ve learned how to be a professional, how to compete every game – in it or not – and how to finish, just like he did today.”

After the game, Forte took one more trip through the south

end zone and reached into the stands. He gave some fans highfives. He handed over some of his gear.

“I wasn’t able to get everybody, but I was able to slap a few hands and say thank you,” Forte said. “If this was the last game that I play at Soldier Field, I didn’t want to leave without showing the fans that I appreciate them in person.”

Afterward, Forte took the long jog across the field. He vanished into the tunnel on the north side of the stadium for what might have been his final time as a Bear.

“I’m going to tell my kids about this guy,” offensive lineman Kyle Long said. “I’m going to tell my grandkids about this guy if they don’t already know, because he’s going to be everywhere. He’s a legend. He’s somebody who should be in the same conversation with the greats.”

Then, Long repeated the same phrase that was echoed around the locker room Sunday.

“He’s the best player I’ve ever played with.”

Before Sunday, only Barry Sanders, LaDainian Tomlinson, Curtis Martin and Ricky Watters had totaled 1,200 yards from scrimmage in each of their first eight years in the league. Now, Forte has, too.

Forte may be 30, but if he has slipped at all, it isn’t noticeable. He says he wants to stay.

“Yes, I’d like to stay here, but I don’t have any control over that right now,” he said. “When free agency hits, we’ll obviously cross that bridge when it gets here. Yeah, I’d obviously like to finish my career out with the Bears.

I was drafted by them, so that is special to me.”

Pace has given no indication what’s on his mind regarding Forte.

Kyle Long clearly will be a building block for the future, but at tackle or guard?

He thinks his team has taken a clear step forward by winning one more game than last year.

“Well, that’s progress,” Long said. “It’s not the progress we’re looking for. Being a starter on

both teams, last year and this year, I can tell you that this is a different team this time around. Although the record doesn’t reflect that, and I’ve said it a million times, I’ll go to fight with this group any day of the week.”

Asked what he thinks of his first team of Bears, Fox said, “The way we are going to play football as I said, today was a microcosm of what we’ve done all season.

“I think we just need a couple of pieces. We aren’t real far. I know it looks like we are, recordwise. But we’re really not. I think the core of our team is the group in there, and they understand and know how to operate it.”

Fox had best be right.

Next year’s slate of opponents includes only two playoff teams in addition to the Packers and Vikings – Washington (9-7) and Houston (9-7).

Other than that, there are no winning teams on the schedule.

High marks won’t come without wins, and there will be no more bonus points for effort and organization.

Matt Forte pointed skyward as Soldier Field erupted with cheers. The Bears’ veteran running back had just sprinted to the end zone on a 23-yard swing pass from Jay Cutler.

Forte jogged to the sideline and tossed the football to a ball boy. He keeps most of his touchdown balls. This one was no different. He’ll have it painted like the others and keep it at his house, just like the others.

Yet, depending on how this offseason plays out, this one could become much different from the rest.

After eight seasons in which he has racked up the most yards from scrimmage of any Bear since Walter Payton, Forte enters the offseason facing an uncertain future. His four-year, $30.4 million contract expired Sunday with the Bears’ 24-20 loss to the Lions.

Now, the Bears team that drafted him in the second round in 2008 will weigh its allegiance toward a player who spent his whole career in Chicago against the age and agility of a 30-yearold ball carrier.

The coming months will determine whether Forte will view Sunday’s touchdown ball with special significance. Whether the Bears sign Forte or opt to go with the younger (and cheaper) options of rookie fourth-round pick Jeremy Langford and second-year back Ka’Deem Carey, the mark Forte made on his Bears teammates and coaches

Manning helps lead Broncos to No. 1 seed The ASSOCIATED PRESS DENVER – Peyton Manning replaced Brock Osweiler in the third quarter Sunday and led the Broncos a 27-20 win over the San Diego Chargers that clinched the top seed in the AFC playoffs for Denver.

Combined with New England’s loss at Miami, the Broncos (12-4) secured the No. 1 seed even as they head into the playoffs with a quarterback quandary on their hands.

The Chargers (4-12) wrapped up what might have been their final season representing San Diego as ownership tries to move the team to L.A. The Broncos were facing the possibility of tumbling into the wild-card round because of Kansas City’s 10th consecutive win, 23-17 over Oakland, when Manning came to the rescue.

BILLS 22, JETS 17: At Orchard Park, New York, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw interceptions on each of New York’s final three drives, and the Jets’ playoff hopes were dashed.

The Jets (10-6) would have made the postseason for the first time since 2010 with a win, but the defeat combined with Pittsburgh’s win at Cleveland ended those hopes. New York had a fivegame winning streak stopped, and the loss came against former Jets coach Rex Ryan – fired by New York and hired by the Bills (8-8) last January.

STEELERS 28, BROWNS 12: In Cleveland, Ben Roethlisberger threw three touchdown passes, Pittsburgh’s defense dominated, and the Steelers slipped into the AFC playoffs with the win over Cleveland (3-13), which fired coach Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer after the game.

The Steelers (10-6) had to win and needed Buffalo to knock off the New York Jets to make the postseason.

Pittsburgh did its part, then earned a wild-card berth when the Bills won.

Pittsburgh will play at Cincinnati next weekend.

DOLPHINS 20, PATRIOTS 10: At Miami Gardens, Florida, Tom Brady was sacked twice and knocked down at least half a dozen times, and New England missed a chance to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

New England (12-4) ends up as a No. 2 seed after Denver defeated San Diego to earn the top seed.

The Dolphins (6-10) wrapped up a disappointing season and are expected to embark on a search for their ninth coach since 2004.

TEXANS 30, JAGUARS 6: In Houston, J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus led the defense and Jonathan Grimes scored twice to help the Texans clinch the AFC South.

Houston will host Kansas City next weekend in the a wild-card game.

Newton tied Steve Young’s NFL record for most career TDs rushing by a quarterback with 43. Young took 15 seasons to reach that plateau; Newton did it in five.

Newton completed 21 of 26 passes for 293 yards as Carolina (15-1) overcame a slow start to build a 31-3 lead in the third quarter over the Bucs (6-10).

Carolina won its 11th straight home game. The Bucs finished last in the NFC South for the fourth time in five years.

CHIEFS 23, RAIDERS 17: At Kansas City, Missouri, Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes, Kansas City sacked Derek Carr six times, and the Chiefs collected a franchise-best 10th straight win.

After a 1-5 start, the Chiefs (11-5) are headed to Houston for a wild-card game next weekend after Denver won the AFC West with its win over San Diego.

The Raiders finished at 7-9.

SEAHAWKS 36, CARDINALS 6: At Glendale, Arizona, Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes in a second-quarter outburst and Seattle snapped Arizona’s nine-game winning streak.

Seattle (10-6) will play at either Washington or Minnesota in the wild card round next weekend, depending on the outcome of Sunday night’s game between the Vikings and Green Bay. The NFC West champion Cardinals

(13-3) already had clinched the NFC’s No. 2 seed and a first-round playoff bye.

EAGLES 35, GIANTS 30: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Giants suffered another tough loss in what may have been Tom Coughlin’s final game.

Former Giant Walter Thurmond scored on an 83-yard fumble return in the third quarter, and Philadelphia (7-9) added to Coughlin’s season-long frustrations.

It was the third straight loss for the Giants (6-10), who finished a third straight losing season and a fourth straight year out of the playoffs.

The 69-year-old might retire and end his 20-year NFL head coaching career.

REDSKINS 34, COWBOYS 23: In Arlington, Texas, Kirk Cousins threw for three touchdowns before leaving late in the first half of a playoff tuneup against Dallas (4-12).

Cousins broke Jay Shroeder’s franchise record for yards passing in a season, finishing with 4,166.

The Redskins (9-7) won four straight to finish the season, their longest streak since winning the last seven the last time they made the playoffs in 2012. The NFC East champions will be the No. 4 seed on wild-card weekend.

COLTS 30, TITANS 24: In Indianapolis, Recently signed Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley each threw a touchdown pass in the first half and Jerrell Freeman scored on a 23-yard interception in the second for the Colts.

The Colts (8-8) won their last two games to avoid the first losing season since 2011, but didn’t get the help they needed – a Houston loss and seven other games to go the right way – to make the postseason.

Tennessee (3-13) clinched the No. 1 draft pick by losing its fourth straight.

SAINTS 20, FALCONS 17: In Atlanta, Jamarca Sanford’s interception at the Atlanta 25 with less than two minutes remaining set up Kai Forbath’s 30-yard field goal as time expired.

It was the Saints’ sixth sweep of the season series with the Falcons in 10 years under coach Sean Payton. Payton is 15-5 against Atlanta.

The loss denied the Falcons (8-8) their chance to give first-year coach Dan Quinn a winning record. The Saints (7-9) avoided giving coach Sean Payton his first 10-loss season.

49ERS 19, RAMS 16 (OT): At Santa Clara, California, Phil Dawson kicked a 23yard field goal 11:33 into overtime for his fourth of the game to lift San Francisco in what was Jim Tomsula’s last game as coach. The 49ers (5-11) avoided their worst finish since 4-12 in 2005, but Tomsula was fired after the game.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher finished 7-9 for his fourth straight losing season running the team.

Loving leads Ohio State over Illinois

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Marc Loving led four Ohio State players in double figures with 27 points as the Buckeyes held on Sunday to beat Illinois, 7573, for their sixth straight win.

Loving scored six straight points to carry Ohio State from a 61-59 deficit to a 65-61 lead with 2:21 to play thanks to a dunk, a 3-pointer and a foul shot.

Ohio State held a five-point lead when Michael Finke’s tip-in made it 70-67 with 23.3 seconds left. Jae-Sean Tate’s slam with 12.6 seconds left made 72-67 before Jalen Coleman-Lands hit a trey to pull Illinois (8-7, 0-2) within 72-70.

A pair of Loving free throws upped the score to 7470, but Malcolm Hill hit another 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left. Loving made one of two foul shots, and a desperation shot from midcourt by Hill at the buzzer missed.

JaQuan Lyle, who had no points or assists in the first half after playing less than two minutes because of foul trouble, had 14 points and five assists for the Buckeyes (10-5, 2-0 Big Ten). Keita Bates-Diop had 11, and Kam Williams added 10.

Hill, Kendrick Nunn, Coleman-Lands and Finke all had 14 points for the Illini.

Ohio State led, 52-51, with nine minutes to play when Kam Williams scored five straight points and Lyle added a floater in the lane to push the Buckeyes’ lead to 59-51.

But the Illini got a basket

by Finke and a trey by Coleman-Lands to close to within three. Hill’s basket and Finke’s third 3-pointer of the second half gave Illinois a 61-59 lead before a Loving dunk tied the score with four minutes left.

Loving and Bates-Diop, from Normal, both had 11 points as the Buckeyes took a 30-26 halftime lead.

Ohio State was 28 of 39 from the free throw line; Illinois made 9 of 11.

That’s all it was, Butler said.

One half. Still, it was an amazing run.

Butler broke the Hall of Famer’s team record for points in a half, scoring 40 of his 42 after the break to lead the Bulls over the Toronto Raptors, 115-113, on Sunday.

Jordan had 39, also in the second half, in a game against Milwaukee in 1989. Butler shot 14 of 19 in the final two quarters after a 1-for-4 start in the Bulls’ fourth straight win.

“Don’t compare me to him,” Butler said. “I don’t want to be compared to him because then people are going to think I got to do what he did. I’m trying, but we’re nowhere near the same player.”

One of Jordan’s teammates was pretty impressed, though.

“What a performance by @

JimmyButler. You don’t see individual efforts like this too often,” Scottie Pippen said in a tweet.

Butler’s performance came after he got stitches in his mouth. He was accidentally elbowed by DeMarre Carroll in the second quarter after making a basket. He needed one stitch to close the wound and ready him for the second half.

“I was mad, but I just came out and was just aggressive,” he said.

He scored 21 points in the third quarter, the most the Raptors have given up to an opponent in a single quarter this season, shooting 7 of 9 from the floor and making all seven of his free throw attempts.

In the fourth, Butler put the Bulls in front with a 3-pointer from the corner with 30.9 seconds to go to give Chicago its first lead since early in the second. A pair of free throws by Butler closed out the victory shortly afterward.

ler’s outing.

“I’ll say this: It’s the best performance I’ve seen coaching,” said Fred Hoiberg.

The Bulls coach was also full of praise for the way his team responded in the second half, commenting that the four-game winning streak that his club is now on closed out “a very important week for us.”

Butler’s teammates were equally complimentary.

“It’s not just that he scored a lot of points, he did it in a very efficient way and he did it in a way that was critical for us to win the ballgame,” said Pau Gasol, who registered his 17th double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

While Raptors coach Dwane Casey said he tried everything to slow Butler down, he was also upset about being in front for the majority of the game and failing to close out the victory.

The Raptors haven’t beaten the Bulls since Dec. 31, 2013.

“We can’t give up 34 points in the fourth quarter,” he said.

Crawford’s 26 saves lift Blackhawks

By MATT CARLSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Corey Crawford made 26 saves in his NHL-leading sixth shutout this season to lead the Blackhawks past the Ottawa Senators, 3-0, on Sunday night for their third straight win.

Duncan Keith and Artem Anisimov scored for Hawks, who also got an empty-net goal from Andrew Desjardins with 48 seconds left.

Crawford wasn’t tested consistently, but he was sharp when needed in earning his 18th career shutout in his 300th game.

Ottawa’s Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots, but the Senators lost their third straight and fifth in their last six.

The Hawks, who have won six of eight, avenged a 4-3 over-

time loss at Ottawa on Dec. 3.

Crawford came up with the toughest save in the choppy, scoreless first period when he stopped Alex Chiasson’s pointblank deflection of Mika Zibanejad’s shot from the slot.

Keith opened the scoring at 8:13 of the second on a screened drive from the left point that sailed past Anderson’s blocker with Marian Hossa and Jean-Gabriel Pageau jostling in front.

Crawford was alert – and made a handful of tough stops – to keep it scoreless. He robbed Max McCormick, who was wide open at the edge of the crease, with a quick blocker save with about 2 minutes left in the second.

Anisimov swatted in a rebound at 6:01 of the second to extend the Hawks’ lead to 2-0.

There are a few bridge experts who so trust their reading of a deal that they confidently play antipercentage.

For example, there are Jeff Meckstroth, who lives in Florida, and Peter Fredin from Sweden, who was the declarer in this deal.

Against five spades, West led his lowest club. East took the trick and shifted to the diamond king. What happened after that?

The deal occurred during the European Bridge League’s 13th Champions Cup in Milan. Most Souths took 10 tricks, losing one spade, one diamond and one club.

Note Fredin’s careful three-heart rebid. He was always going to bid four spades, but wanted partner to judge what to do if, for example, West raised immediately to five clubs. Then, after West passed, North jumped to four spades, accepting what he thought was a game-try by his partner. So, when East rebid five clubs, South was happy to compete to five spades.

Fredin knew that East had long and strong clubs.

He thought that if he also had king-doubleton or king-third of spades, he would have overcalled three notrump, not three clubs. So, placing West with the spade king, Fredin won the second trick with the diamond ace and led his spade jack.

West, never guessing what was happening, played low. Now Fredin took 12 tricks: six spades, five hearts and one diamond.

On the other hand, other large studies have not come to the same conclusion. So the evidence is mixed.

The alternative treatments to PPIs don’t have to be other pills, such as H2-blockers. Lifestyle changes often help. You may be able to control your stomach symptoms by: • Changing your diet.

Cutting back on coffee, chocolate and fatty foods may help. You also can limit carbonated beverages, citrus fruits and tomatoes.

• Elevating the head of your bed.

• Not lying down right after you eat.

• Not smoking.

• Moderating your alcohol intake.

• Losing excess weight.

You also should consider adjusting other drugs you may take. For example, if you take an anti-inflammatory drug (such as ibuprofen), you may be able to take it with food or reduce the dose, which may reduce stomach-related side effects.

If you take a PPI and are concerned about this research, ask your doctor about other treatment options. You may get relief with over-thecounter antacids, such as Mylanta and Maalox, or over-the-counter or prescription H2 blockers, such as famotidine (Pepcid) or ranitidine (Zantac). I would recommend this particularly if you have risk factors for heart disease or already diagnosed heart disease.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been taking PPIs for years to treat my heartburn.

Now I hear they might increase my risk for a heart attack. Should I stop taking them?

Dear Reader: Proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, are antacid drugs used to treat some ulcers, heartburn (GERD) and other causes of upset stomach. These popular drugs include the brand names Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.

PPIs, available over the counter, have been considered quite safe.

That’s why one recent study attracted much attention: It found that people who take PPIs are at a higher risk for heart attack than people who don’t use these drugs.

For the study, researchers analyzed the medical records of nearly 4 million people. They looked to see if there was a higher rate of cardiovascular problems, including heart attack, among people taking proton pump inhibitors for GERD. They found that people who had taken a PPI had a 16 percent to 21 percent increased risk of heart attack compared with people who had not taken these drugs. What’s more, the increased heart attack risk was not limited to people who already had heart disease, or to older individuals.

No increased heart attack risk was seen among people who took another type of antacid (called an H2-blocker).

These include cimetidine (Tagamet) and ranitidine (Zantac).

This study cannot – and was not designed to – prove whether PPIs are to blame for increased heart attack risk. There could be other factors that both increase the likelihood a person will use PPIs and increase the risk of heart attacks. But these results do warrant some concern. That’s be-

Dear Abby: My husband went to Florida three months ago to care for an ailing former lover. He told me she will be leaving him a sizable inheritance and he needs to protect her from “vultures.” I admit I am suspicious of his motives.

I think there may be more going on than what he’s telling me, but he has been painting a pretty picture of how rosy our future will be with her gift.

He has now suggested that we get a temporary divorce so he can marry her in order to get her entire estate!

He claims it will be nothing more than a business arrangement. His suggestion left me flabbergasted. Even though our marriage has been rocky at times, I have never seen this side of him.

I don’t know whether to believe him and be simply disappointed at his callous behavior, or not believe him and conclude that he really wants a divorce so he can marry her. Any thoughts? –
