mmallory@shawmedia.com GRUNDY COUNTY – Competitive Power Ventures announced Thursday its intention to open a state-of-the-art electric generating facility in the Three Rivers area of unincorporated Grundy County.

The CPV Three Rivers Energy Center is a nearly $1 billion privately funded project designed to meet the future electricity demands of Illinois.

The 1,100 megawatt natural gas powered 2-by-1 combined cycle facility will provide enough electricity to power about 1.1 million homes.

With a lengthy permit process ahead, Three Rivers project director Michael Bruno said the company has set a goal of beginning construction in 2018 and supplying electricity in 2021.

The 2½ year construction process is expected to create 300 to 500 locally sourced union jobs.

“Grundy County has an amazing, ready-made union

workforce,” Bruno said.

“That’s huge for us. We see unions as an essential partner.”

Once open, the facility is expected to have 25 full-time operational jobs with more than $3 million in payroll and benefits.

There will be significant indirect job creation as well, when factoring in landscaping, janitorial and other jobs, Bruno said.

“This is a huge economic investment to Grundy County,” said Grundy Economic Development Council Executive Director Nancy Norton Ammer.

The 80-acre project site is just south of Exelon’s Dresden Generating Station in Goose Lake Township. The building, which will sit southwest of the mouth of the Kankakee River, will occupy 30 acres. Bruno said an obvious concern for residents would be how the facility will impact operation of Dresden.

“We don’t see it impacting Dresden at all,” Bruno said.

Dresden Site Communications Manager Bob Osgood said

Exelon doesn’t mind having CPV as a neighbor.

“We welcome them,” Osgood said. “We don’t see this impacting Exelon.”

Osgood said it’s difficult to say how or if the new plant would affect Exelon at all. He said it would be speculation because a lot can change before 2021.

Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor and Norton Ammer agreed energy demand projections for the Chicago area indicate a project like this would happen at some point, and they’re glad it’s happening in Grundy County.

Through comprehensive studies, CPV identified Illinois as an area that will need cleaner power generation for the coming decades.

CPV considered 17 sites in the region, but was attracted to Three Rivers for several reasons. It can tap into the power grid nearby and has access to a pipeline that will fuel two natural gas turbines. The site will be cooled by water from the nearby river system.

Cytec offers latest update on water testing in Joliet Township community

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Not many showed up for an open house held Thursday by Cytec Industries to offer an update on water testing in an area near the company’s old chemical plant on McKinley Avenue.

Those who did said well water in the area has been a problem for a long time.

“I just remember my mother made my father buy water because she wouldn’t drink the water,” said Deborah Hughes, who no longer lives in the neighborhood but owns the house she grew up in. “The water just smelled horrible.”

Hughes’ childhood home was among 21 houses that were taken off private wells and hooked up to Southeast Joliet Sanitary District in the early 2000s when Cytec began monitoring groundwater for high

levels of sulfates.

This year, Cytec will hook up another house to the sanitary district water supply after the sulfate level exceeded the allowable standard in a test done in the summer. It was the first house where a sulfate problem was detected since the early 2000s, Cytec Project Manager Ken Milo said.

Milo said the sulfate problem does not appear to be migrating to new areas. The house where high sulfates were found in August is in the same area as other houses taken off wells years ago. It’s not clear whether this well had ever been tested before, he said.

The testing program is voluntary. The attendance at the open house did not indicate a high level of concern. The event ran from noon to 7 p.m. at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, and by 5 p.m. only about 10 people had come by. The church is

across the street from the Cytec site.

Milo said the sulfate standard applied to the wells is not based on a health threat posed by the water.

“In this case, it’s based on aesthetics – odor and taste,” he said.

But at those homes where well water exceeded the standard of 400 milligrams of sulfate per liter, Cytec provides bottled water until the house can be hooked up to the Southeast Joliet Sanitary District.

Cytec pays for the hookup and then pays the water bill for the life of the homeowner.

Cytec, which has a number of monitoring wells both on the site of the now-closed plant and in the neighborhood, eventually wants to get local ordinances passed that would require all wells to be capped with those households switched to sanitary district water.

“We have great resources for industrial projects,” Pryor said. “This project can happen because of access to the pipeline, the power grid and the river.”

Bruno compared energy advancements since 1970 to that of the automobile industry. He said much like motor vehicles, the energy supply systems of today are far more efficient.

Nuclear power stations are currently 23 to 25 percent efficient, Bruno said. This site is estimated to be 63 percent efficient and operate at least 30 years.

Norton Ammer said the tax base enhancement will be huge. Seven taxing bodies would receive funds, including Coal City schools and protection agencies, Goose Lake Township and Grundy County.

CPV has met with all taxing bodies, she said.

Illinois National Guard honors Wilco Area Career Center for program, recruits

vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Plainfield North High School senior Adrian Flores was focused on heading to college after taking criminal justice classes at the Wilco Area Career Center.

He was thinking about the financial battle after graduation. His older brother became a pharmacist but was saddled with student loan debt.

But now, he is Pvt. Adrian Flores, training for real battles as a recruit for the Illinois Army National Guard, with the relief-giving option of going to college with tuition covered.

On Thursday, he was one of three Wilco students, with Pvt. Sarah Smith from Plainfield East and Pfc. Nick Bedtka from Plainfield North, who enlisted and talked to other students about their decision to join during a ceremony to honor the career center.

“When I first began the school year I didn’t have an idea about the National Guard,” Flores said. “I just learned so much stuff about them.”

The ceremony, held by the National Guard at the career center, also was a way to show other students in the criminal justice program at Wilco the benefits of serving in the National Guard and provide examples of success for the joint program.

National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Lenny Miller presented Thursday morning the iconic statue of a minuteman – the precursor to the National Guard – to Wilco instructor Don Malec and Wilco Executive Director Katrina Plese.

Lincoln-Way D-210 board faces more criticism

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Board began their first meeting of the year without three members – two who resigned and one who was absent.

Dee Molinare, board vice president, served as acting president at Thursday’s board meeting in light of former Board President Kevin Molloy’s resignation. Molloy, along with board member Christopher McFadden, resigned this month.

Four board members were at the meeting, with Arvid

Johnson absent.

Superintendent Scott Tingley announced Molloy and McFadden’s resignation, commending for their service but said recent comments from Molloy “do not reflect the opinions of the administration or board.”

Some residents came to Thursday’s meeting to criticize the board and district for what they said was financial mismanagement and one encouraged the board to reverse its decision.

Recently, the district has come under scrutiny for the construction of dog training school facility known as the “Superdog Obedience Training School,” for the benefit of former superintendent Lawrence Wyllie that was referenced in a lawsuit filed by Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite against the board.

She asked the board to reconsider its decision to close North and speak with LWATU. “Please remember that many of our current problems stem from the board blindly following the superintendent’s direction,” she said.

NEW LENOX – Citing personal attacks from critics, Lincoln-Way School District 210 Board President Kevin Molloy abruptly resigned ahead of Thursday night’s board meeting, marking the board’s second departure in less than a month amid controversy.

Molloy submitted his resignation letter to Superintendent Scott Tingley on Wednesday night, Tingley said, after Molloy and Tingley discussed his continued involvement on the board.

Tingley said Molloy was not asked to resign, but he wouldn’t say who approached whom about his potential resignation.

“No, we had discussions and he felt it was best at this time to move away from the board,” Tingley said Thursday. “Kevin has been, as you know, since the fall ... it’s been a difficult time for all of us. At this time, he thinks it’s best for him and his family if he stepped aside.”

Lincoln-Way board accepting applications

NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Board is accepting applications to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of board President Kevin Molloy.

The application can be downloaded from the District 210 website at lw210.org from Thursday until Friday, according to a news release.

The deadline for submission is 4 p.m. Friday.

Those interested can contact against the board filed in Will County court by Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite. The watchdog group formed in August in response to the board’s decision to close Lincoln-Way North.

Molloy and McFadden were among five board members who supported the decision to close North because of financial troubles.

The lawsuit seeks a preliminary court order and a final ruling barring District 210 officials from closing any high school.

“As a result of that, [Tingley and I] agreed I need to do this for the best interest of the district and the best interest of the board members,” Molloy said.

Todd Velky, LWATU treasurer, said the group does not like to see any elected officials resign and that his group has

tried to work with the board to save any of the district’s four schools from closing.

“We’ve been offering our help to right the wrongs of the district,” he said.

Velky once demanded the resignation of every board member at a Sept. 24 meeting except McFadden and Ronald Lullo, which was met with cheers and applause. He said he was speaking at the time as a parent, resident and taxpayer, not for LWATU.

Resignation letter

In his resignation letter, Molloy discussed coming under attack by parents and others upset over the North closure, and its impact on his personal and professional life.

“Since August, my personal life no longer was a personal life. Since August, my family became part of public attack and unfortunately, my business was continually attacked to the point that my employees began to suffer,” Molloy wrote.

He wrote his employer was receiving letters, some anonymous and some signed, questioning if he was “what they wanted representing them within our community.”

State Farm approached him, he wrote, to see “what was

most important to me, my career or my board position.”

“This was the moment I knew the small army had defeated me,” Molloy wrote.

‘Superdog’ facility

The lawsuit in which Molloy and other board members are named also alleges other issues, such as the construction of a dog training school facility at North for the benefit of former superintendent Lawrence Wyllie.

In the Daily Southtown interview this week, Molloy said he did not know until March 2015 about the dog training facility’s existence. However, Molloy’s signature can be found on a 2012 intergovernmental agreement reached between Lincoln-Way and the Frankfort Square Park District regarding the facility. At the time, Molloy signed as secretary.

The agreement allows the park district’s use of Lincoln-Way facilities, including a “Superdog Obedience Training School,” aquatic center for pool parties and open swims, and fine and performance arts center practices, among others.

Molloy said he was not aware of the “Superdog” item in the document because he did not read the whole agreement.

Brewery to hold grand opening Saturday

vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – If a chocolate peanut butter imperial stout brewed with roasted peanuts sounds delectable, a visit to the grand opening of Metal Monkey Brewing on Saturday might be in order.

The candy-like beer is one of the hot ticket items for the upstart microbrewery, which now is out of the basement and brewing in an industrial building at 515 Anderson Drive, Suite 900, in Romeoville.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The creation of a youth committee for the Rialto Square Theatre has gotten off to a good start, its organizer said.

About 50 people are involved so far, including band members and business people in downtown restaurants, Tyler Kelly told the Rialto board this week.

The group also has a Face-

book page, which is Facebook.com/JolietYouthActionCommittee, and has had its first meeting at the Rialto.

“There’s a lot of people who came to the meeting who never actually have been to the Rialto,” Kelly said. “Everyone seems to enjoy what we’re doing and wants to collaborate to do everything we can do for the downtown area.”

Kelly, 24, who works as a stagehand at the Rialto, told

the board in December that he wanted to look for ways to get younger people more involved in the Rialto and bring shows that would appeal to younger audiences.

The board and General Manager Randy Green told Kelly last month that they welcomed his involvement.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge declined Thursday to reduce the bond amount needed for a Tinley Park man accused of beating his wife to death to get out of the Will County Jail.

Bahaa A. Sam, 50, was seeking a reduction from $5 million to $1 million, defense attorney Chuck Bretz told Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

“That amount is still a very substantial bond,” Bretz said.

“Though it’s a very serious

charge ... there are no allegations [Sam] had any issues with any other person outside the relationship.”

On Dec. 19, 2012, Sam allegedly struck Nermeen Sam, 38, several times with a curled weightlifting bar in the front yard of their home in the 19700 block of Silverside Drive. The couple’s then 4-year-old son witnessed the beating, according to Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Steven Platek.

“He stated [to investigators] their argument was regarding

his lack of ability to maintain employment,” Platek said. “He felt she was challenging his manhood a little bit with the inability to hold a job.”

Sam is charged with murder.

Bertani-Tomczak noted there is a petition on file to revoke Sam’s probation on an earlier domestic battery case that involved his late wife. He also has been charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer after allegedly fighting with guards at the Will County Jail in 2014.

Man expected to survive 7 Joliet car shooting

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 34-year-old man was shot while sitting in a car Tuesday.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said police were called about 3 p.m. when shots were reported in the 400 block of Western Avenue.

“They found a blue Chevy Caprice station wagon had been struck by gunfire and found a blood trail, which they followed into a nearby

apartment,” Gregory said.

Officers found the unconscious victim had suffered wounds to his face and left forearm, according to police reports.

The victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in critical condition but was expected to survive, Gregory said Thursday.

Gregory said Thursday detectives had interviewed witnesses, but police had not released any suspect information.

LOCAL BRIEFS BOLINGBROOK – Police said a traffic stop Wednesday led to the seizure of almost 300 grams of marijuana.

According to a statement from Will County sheriff’s police, deputies Winfred Richter with the Gang Suppression Unit stopped a speeding vehicle on Weber Road south of Boughton Road.

Winfred Richter, 26, had “an open white plastic bag with multiple bags of suspected cannabis inside,” police said.

Police said the bag contained 289 grams of marijuana.

Richter, of the 200 block of Williamsburg Court in Romeoville, was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, and booked into the Will County Jail. He is being held on $30,000 bond.

Police seek armed Joliet Dairy Queen robber

JOLIET – Police are asking for the public’s help to identify the man who held up a Dairy Queen last weekend.

About 3:15 p.m. Saturday, a man came into the restaurant at 1700 W. Jefferson St., showed

a handgun to employees and demanded money, Capt. Les O’Connor said.

No one was injured, and the suspect fled on foot.

The bandit was described as a white man in his 40s who wore glasses. He was wearing a black

stocking cap, a brown Carhartt-style jacket and blue jeans, O’Connor said.

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Several items were up for action, with two in executive session, at the Minooka School District 201 board meeting Wednesday.

After executive session, the board approved 5-1, with board member Doug Martin opposed and board member Curt Jebens absent, a three-year contract with the Minooka Educational Support Professionals Association, which runs from the 201516 through the 2017-18 school years.

Superintendent Kris Monn said Thursday the board worked through the language of the agreement to clarify work conditions. Monn said the compensation package was 4 percent more a year for all three years with a slight increase in the starting rates for the cafeteria workers and teacher aides to make the positions more competitive.

Monn said the total new salary money in year one of the contract is $136,480 – 4.86 per-

cent more than the prior year – with a total of $376,784 over the three-year agreement. Also, a few benefits were adjusted to keep the employee group consistent with other groups in terms of health care coverage.

“We are pleased that the board and the MESP have agreed to this new three-year contract that is fair, competitive and allows us to continue our efforts to collaboratively serve the students of our community. We value the efforts of each of our staff members, and this contract represents out commitment to both our staff and the students they support,” Monn said.

According to the MESP contract, positions under the contract include secretaries, clerical employees, custodians, aides, teacher associates, technology associates, nurses and food service providers who work full time, or more than 37.5 hours a week.

Bedtka always had ambitions in law enforcement and already was leaning toward joining the military.

During his freshman year, Bedtka talked with Miller and found out he could get his college education tuition free, then go active with the National Guard. His time at Wilco was the spark he needed.

“Even from my first drill, I felt like I became a better person ... just after someone yelling at me [telling me] I was doing something wrong,” said Bedtka, who enlisted earlier than Flores and Smith.

Smith comes from a military family and also received help from Miller.

Appeals court: Confession banned from Crest Hill murder trial 11 OTTAWA – An appellate court unanimously agreed police illegally obtained a Crest Hill man’s confession in the death of his 89-year-old neighbor.

On Nov. 20, 2012, Gempel came into the Romeoville police station and was questioned by detectives with the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force. Gempel asked about speaking to a lawyer three times and said he wanted to leave twice after taking a lie detector test.

“After about 20 minutes of interrogation, the defendant

told the detectives that he wanted to leave and he wanted a lawyer because he believed the detectives were ‘twisting this around and trying to get [him] to say something [he] didn’t do,’ ” Justice William Holdridge wrote in the opinion.

After taking a cigarette break, Gempel told detectives, “I want to go. I’ll have to get an attorney,” according to a video played for the appellate court.

“The defendant argues the police flagrantly violated his fifth amendment right to counsel ... Because the record clearly establishes the defendant was in custody and invoked

his Miranda rights, we agree,” Holdridge wrote.

“We cannot condone conduct such as this where detectives clearly understood they were prohibited from initiating further communication but chose to do so anyway hoping the defendant would confess,” Holdridge wrote.

Lucille (Muffler) Cassingham Lucille M. Cassingham of Elgin, (formerly of Joliet), died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin at the age of 90.

Mrs. Cassingham was born in Seneca, on Sept. 9, 1925, the daughter of Herbert and Mary Muffler, and she grew up in the Morris area. While Lucille received a four-year fully paid scholarship to St. Mary’s College in Indiana, she accepted a position as the office manager with O’Brien & Sons Construction in Morris.

Lucille married Jacque C. Cassingham in Coal City on April 26, 1952.

For almost 50 years, they lived in Joliet where they raised six children and were active members of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

In 2001, Lucille and Jacque moved to Elgin to be closer to their two daughters and they joined St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Lucille always enjoyed baking and reading her vast collection of cookbooks, but most important to Lucille was the time she spent with her family.

Lucille is survived by her six children, Paul, John (Terri Pickering), Joel (Sheila Arimond), Curt, Lisa and Rene (Jason Barry); and her 10 grandchildren, Ross, Douglas, Patrick, Katy, Zach, Riley, Caroline, Maddy, Audrey, and Hannah. Lucille is also survived by her two sisters, Marie (Russell) Starks of Minooka and Bernice (George) Gahm of Streator; one sister-in-law, Faye L. Cassingham; one niece; and two nephews.

Lucille is preceded in death by her loving husband, Jacque, and her parents.

Lillie accepted Christ at a young age, and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Lockport, for over 50 years .

Lillie was always an entrepreneur and business owner. She and her late husband Moses Doss owned Big D’s Lounge in Lockport.

Lillie also started Lil’s Soul Kitchen and ran that for many years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Louisa Green and Enes Nicholas; one brother, Enes Nicholas Jr.; and one sister, Celia Nicholas.

Lillie leaves to cherish her memories three sons, Andrew Nicholas, Ulysses Doss and Christopher Doss; one daughter, Angela Doss; 16 grandchildren, including granddaughter/daughter, Kywanna Doss; two great-granddaughters; one great-great-grandson; four brothers; three sisters; many special nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host friends.

Carle to appeal to Illinois Supreme Court on tax exemptions

URBANA – An Illinois health care system plans to appeal a court ruling involving whether hospitals should pay taxes.

Urbana-based Carle health system said Thursday it will appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court before a Feb. 9 deadline.

Carle said its tax-exempt status allows it to provide charity care to low-income patients.

The Illinois 4th District Appellate Court ruled this month that part of a 2012 law allowing hospitals to avoid taxes is unconstitutional.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported Champaign County moved this week to put hospitals back on its tax rolls.

State lawmakers gave hospitals tax-exempt status in a 2012 compromise.

Illinois GOP calls Democrats’ college spending bill a hoax

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Democrats approved $721.5 million for tuition grants and community colleges Thursday, a move Republicans called an empty promise because there’s no budget and the spending measure likely will be vetoed.

The action from Democrats only served to highlight the chasm between the two parties when

it comes to settling the state’s finances, one day after Gov. Bruce Rauner urged lawmakers to cast aside partisanship during his State of the State address.

The governor’s budget office said in a letter to lawmakers that Rauner is being advised to veto their idea because there’s no revenue for it and its not connected to any spending cuts to make up for it.

Rep. Jim Durkin, the Republicans’ House leader, called the Democrats’ proposal “a cruel hoax” on students who think they’re going to get money.

“Do we print money in this building?” Durkin asked before the House voted, 67-42, to pass the spending measure. The Senate later approved it on a 36-12 vote, sending it to Rauner.

Durkin said he told House leaders the governor would veto the bill.

The funding measure would allocate $324.4 million to community colleges for operating costs and $397.1 million to the Monetary Award Program, which provides tuition assistance for low-income students.

Democrats say colleges and students are in desperate need for money because they’ve gotten no state funding since July 1, when the budget should’ve taken effect. Instead, the parties have been clashing over how to proceed.

Democrats want a tax increase and spending cuts to close a multibillion-dollar budget hole.

Rauner, meanwhile, maintains he won’t support a tax increase without reforms.

CHICAGO – Investigators did not find enough evidence to charge the son of a disgraced Illinois policeman with financial crimes even though text messages show the father and son discussing money pilfered from a youth program before the officer killed himself, a police spokesman said Thursday.

Fox Lake police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz elaborately staged his Sept. 1 suicide to look like he’d been killed in the line of duty because he feared his embezzlement would be uncovered, authorities said.

The officer’s wife, Melodie Gliniewicz, was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury on felony counts of money laundering and disbursing charitable funds without authority and for personal benefit.

With her indictment, the financial investigation is over, and no one else is expected to be charged, said Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Christopher Covelli.

Investigators were not able to prove that the officer’s 23-year-old son, Donald “D.J.” Gliniewicz, knew until after the fact that the money he was spending had been stolen, Covelli said.

SPRINGFIELD – The Federal Emergency Management Agency is coming to Illinois to help assess damage from early-winter floods that struck nearly two dozen counties.

Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday vowed to “do everything possible to help people and communities” affected by the late December and early January flooding.

FEMA will work with its state counterpart as well as the U.S. Small Business Administration and county emergency management agencies beginning next week to document the extent of damage to homes and businesses in Alexander, Christian, Clinton, Douglas, Iroquois, Jersey, Madison, Randolph, Sangamon and St. Clair counties.

Their findings will help the state determine whether to seek federal financial assistance. The review also will document storm-related costs to local governments in 19 Illinois counties, including those slated for property damage assessments.

Illinois Republican, replacing Feb. 29, after a defense attorney said Hastert is now largely immobile.

Six days after pleading guilty Oct. 28 to violating bank laws in seeking to pay someone $3.5 million in hush money, Hastert was hospitalized for a blood infection that spread to his spine and “nearly died that week,” lawyer John Gallo said.

Prosecutor Steven Block said at the hearing in U.S. District Court in Chicago that the government didn’t object to pushing back sentencing – at least this one time. But he said it shouldn’t be put off indefinitely.

“There are victims in this case,” he said. “They deserve closure.”

While Block used “victims” in the plural, he didn’t identify who he was referring to or how two or more people may have been victimized. Asked about the language later Thursday, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office declined comment.

The May indictment only mentions an “Individual A” who the former speaker allegedly sought to pay “to compensate for and conceal [Hastert’s] prior misconduct against Individual A.” The Associated Press and other media outlets, citing anonymous sources, have reported that Hastert wanted to hide claims that he sexually molested someone decades earlier.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Six members of a Virginia family that friends and neighbors called religious and hard-working were killed in an apparent murder-suicide after a failed negotiation, police said Thursday.

Chesapeake police said they believe Cameron Dooley, 26, killed his parents, brother, sister and another relative before killing himself after an hourslong negotiation with officers.

The other dead were identified as Steven Todd Dooley, 50; Lori Dooley, 54; Landon Dooley, 22; and Brooke Dooley, 17. The name of the sixth family member, a woman, was not immediately released.

Police said in a news release that officers responded to a call to check on a person and found Landon Dooley dead inside a house Wednesday afternoon.

Their investigation led them to another home a couple of blocks away, where they found an armed man barricaded inside. After negotiating for several hours, police said officers entered the home and found the other five people dead, including the man they had been negotiating with.

DES MOINES, Iowa – AbsentDonaldTrump,theRepublican presidential candidates strained to take advantage of a rare opportunity to step out of the front-runner’s shadow in Thursday night’s debate – a staid, policy-heavy contest that offered a glimpse of what the GOP contest might have been without the unpredictable businessman.

Still, the candidates couldn’t resist mocking Trump for boycotting the final debate before Iowa kicks off voting in the 2016 campaign on Monday.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is locked in a tight contest with Trump in Iowa, opened the debate with a sarcastic impression of the real estate mogul’s frequent insults of his opponents.

“I’m a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly,” Cruz said. Then he thanked his fellow candidates for showing Iowa voters respect by showing up.

Never one to go quietly, Trump was holding a competing rally elsewhere in Des

Moines, an event his campaign said was raising money for military veterans.

“When you’re treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights,” Trump said in explaining he was skipping the debate because he felt Fox News had dealt with him unfairly.

Trump’s absence put the spotlight on Cruz, who is challenging for the lead in Iowa, as well as on Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who needs a strong showing in the state to stay competitive.

The two senators engaged in a lengthy debate on immigration, one of the most contentious issues among Republicans. Both have been accused of shifting their stances on legalizing some of those in the United States illegally, a position opposed by many GOP voters.

Cruz accused Rubio of making a “politically advantageous” decision to support a 2013 Senate bill that included a pathway to citizenship, while the Florida senator said his rival was “willing to say or do anything to get votes.”

In a rare standout debate

moment for Bush, the former Florida governor sharply sided with Cruz in accusing Rubio of having “cut and run” on the Senate immigration bill.

“He cut and ran because it wasn’t popular with conservatives,” Bush said.

With their White House hopes on the line, the candidates worked hard to cast themselves as best prepared to be commander in chief and take on terror threats emanating both from abroad and within the United States.

Rubio struck an aggressive posture, pledging that as president he would go after terrorists “wherever they are.

And if we capture them alive, we’re sending them to Guantanamo.” Rubio also stood by his previous calls for shutting down mosques in the U.S if there were indications that the Muslim religious centers were being used to radicalize terrorists.

The candidates largely sidestepped direct confrontations with each other, focusing some of their most pointed attacks on Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

The Associated Press DALLAS – More U.S. airlines and cruise operators are offering refunds or letting pregnant women change itineraries if they booked a trip to places dealing with an outbreak of Zika virus.

While health officials said most people exposed to the virus suffer only mild symptoms, the risk is far greater for pregnant women. Brazilian officials have linked the mosquito-borne illness to babies born with small or deformed heads.

Zika has been detected mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean. The World Health Organization warns that the virus is likely to spread to most of the Americas.

United Airlines and American Airlines said that since early this week, they have been giving some passengers going to affected areas the chance to delay their trip or get a refund.

United spokesman Charles Hobart said the offer was intended for pregnant woman, or those expecting to become pregnant, and their travel companions. Others customers who are worried can call the airline, he said.

American’s offer extends to pregnant women whose doctors recommend against travel, and it expanded the offer from a few countries in Central America to any Zika-hit desti-

nation outside the U.S. A JetBlue Airways spokesman Thursday said the airline would give refunds or rebook passengers concerned about traveling to areas affected by the virus. Delta Air Lines posted a travel advisory on its website that passengers “may qualify” for a refund or change in itinerary if they contact the airline by Feb. 29. A spokesman declined further details.

Among other airlines and cruise companies: • Spirit Airlines will refund or rebook customers who are pregnant or traveling with a pregnant woman to the affected regions, a spokesman said.

Others who don’t want to fly to outbreak zones can get a credit with fees waived.

• Southwest Airlines is sticking to its regular policy of letting customers who cancel ahead of time use their ticket value on another trip.

• Carnival Cruise Line said it would let pregnant women get a credit, delay their trip, or rebook to destinations not on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list of Zika locales.

• Royal Caribbean Cruises said it also would let pregnant women reschedule their trips for a later date at no penalty.

• Norwegian Cruise Line said it is trying to rebook pregnant customers to later trips or to areas away from the outbreak.

A major launch would only deepen those concerns.

Initial word of a possible launch came Wednesday. The Japanese news agency, Kyodo, cited an unnamed Japanese government source as saying that satellite imagery analysis showed the North may be readying to fire a long-range ballistic missile from Sohae, and that the launch could occur in about a week at the earliest.

The 38 North analysis said a rocket test in the coming week appeared unlikely. Imagery from Monday showed vehicles or equipment and personnel near the rocket launch tower, but a rocket wasn’t visible. The website said there’s a high level of uncertainty about what snapshots of activity at the launch pad offered by the commercial imagery indicate.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner declined to comment Thursday on the reports of preparations for a missile test, saying it was an intelligence matter.

Man with 2 handguns, partner arrested at Disneyland Paris

PARIS – A man who tried to bring two handguns into a hotel at Disneyland Paris was detained Thursday along with his female partner, authorities said, amid lingering jitters around the French capital following attacks last year.

No one was hurt in the incident, and the park – Europe’s most-visited tourist attraction – remained open after the arrests.

The man, 28, was detained at the New York Hotel, part of the Disneyland complex, according to a police official who wasn’t authorized to be publicly named. He also was

found to have a Quran. The man’s motives for trying to enter the hotel with arms were unclear.

“During a routine security screening checkpoint at one of our hotels, weapons were discovered in a guest’s luggage through our X-ray machine. The police were immediately notified,” Disneyland Paris communications chief Francois Banon said. “We continue to work closely with the authorities, and the safety and security of our guests and cast members is our utmost priority.”

The man’s partner was detained later at the park, the police official said. The woman didn’t appear to be armed, and no other suspects

were being pursued, the official said.

About a dozen police surrounded the hotel Thursday evening, and a car was towed away from the parking lot, although it was unclear whether the car was linked to the arrests.

Employees at the New York Hotel and several others around Disneyland Paris said they continued functioning as usual after the arrest.

France is under a state of emergency after Islamic extremist attacks around Paris in November that killed 130 people.

Disneyland Paris, east of the French capital, closed briefly after those attacks occurred.

More airlines offer Zika-related refunds to pregnant women

WASHINGTON – North Korea may be preparing to launch a rocket or missile, according to a U.S. defense official and expert analysis of commercial satellite imagery published Thursday.

The analysis comes just three weeks after North Korea drew international condemnation for conducted its fourth nuclear test explosion.

The official told The Associated Press the U.S. has seen activity at a ballistic missile test site that is consistent with previous tests, but the official would not go into more detail. The official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and requested anonymity.

The North Korea-focused website, 38 North, said it has detected what could be the early stages of preparation for launching a space launch vehicle at the nation’s main rocket launch site at Sohae.

North Korea fired its first rocket into space from Sohae, on its west coast, in December 2012, sending into orbit a satellite that soon malfunctioned. The North has said it has the right to launch rockets any time for its space program, but such long-range launches have drawn U.N. sanctions because similar technology can be used for development of ballistic missiles.

The U.N. Security Council is deliberating over how to respond to the Jan. 6 underground nuclear explosion. The U.S. is pressing for tighter sanctions – a step that China, the North’s only ally, appears reluctant to take.

Governments and experts have been skeptical about North Korea’s claim it tested a hydrogen bomb. But whatever device the North detonated, it likely will push the country a step closer toward its goal of manufacturing a miniaturized warhead to place on a missile that can threaten the U.S. mainland.

Remembering the Challenger tragedy Until the morning of Jan. 28, 1986, America had never lost an astronaut during a space flight.

On that day, 30 years ago, we lost seven: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe, a teacher from Concord, New Hampshire, who was selected from more than 11,000 applicants to be America’s first teacher in space.

When the space shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, those seven astronauts were killed in a disaster that seared itself into the national consciousness.

It became a pivotal moment vividly remembered by people years later if ever asked: Where were you when the Challenger exploded?

It was hard to find the appropriate words to eulogize the seven Americans killed in the tragic explosion. Perhaps so, but President Ronald Reagan came as close as anyone to making sense of it all.

In a nationally broadcast speech that evening from the Oval Office, Reagan praised the astronauts’ bravery, consoled their families and expressed confidence in NASA. Addressing America’s schoolchildren, some of whom watched the liftoff live, Reagan said “painful things” such as the Challenger disaster sometimes happen, but they are “part of the process of exploration and discovery.”

“The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future, and we’ll continue to follow them,” Reagan said.

He closed the speech with words from the poem “High Flight” by John Magee Jr. about how the astronauts had “slipped the surly bonds of Earth” to “touch the face of God.” We mourned the loss and prayed such a tragedy never would happen again. That was not to be, as 17 years later, the space shuttle Columbia broke apart upon re-entry, killing all aboard.

What good can come from such times of disbelief, shock and sadness?

Believe it or not, according to an Associated Press story, quite a few youngsters were inspired to become teachers.

McAuliffe’s motto – “I touch the future. I teach.” – became their motto.

Others, encouraged to “Reach for the stars,” dared to dream big dreams and pursue them.

The Challenger Center for Space Science Education, founded by families of the Challenger astronauts, today reaches more than 40 schools, universities and museums.

As for NASA, its shuttle program ended five years ago, and the focus is on the International Space Station and exploration through unmanned space probes. Meanwhile, commercial rocket companies handle much of the nation’s satellite launches.

The hollow, chilling feeling experienced by those who viewed the tragedy has long been remembered. But we can take solace from the fact that “touching the future” and “reaching for the stars” continue to inspire Americans of all ages.

Youthful Minooka heads into wrestling postseason on a high note

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – During his 16 years of coaching in Minooka’s wrestling program, Bernie Ruettiger rarely has had to worry about seeing a team make huge progress in a season.

But the hall of fame coach was faced with a mixture of talented but young individuals to go along with a few veterans, then had to deal with injury woes throughout the season.

However, things appear to be moving in a good direction for the Indians as they prepare for the Class 3A Bradley-Bourbonnais Regional on Feb. 6.

Minooka closed out the regular season portion of its schedule Thursday when it rolled to a 58-12 Southwest Prairie Conference victory at Plainfield Central.

The Indians won seven of the 10 contested matches and just missed out on two others in addition to the four forfeits that were conceded by the

Wildcats.

“Our guys have to keep peaking, they have to keep this up,” Ruettiger said. “Our 182and 195-pounders, Connor Briley and Dan McMillin, what great improvement they’ve made. They’re two guys who just keep learning and are getting better and better each time. We’re coming on as a team, we really are. The future is theirs, if they want it.

“We have 11 freshmen and sophomores at the varsity level, and they’re talented kids

who are doing well. They’re great kids and are nice, maybe too nice, and they’re so self-conscious of everything.

But they’re starting to get tough out there.”

The Indians presented a lineup that featured 11 sophomores and seniors Kenny Kirkland, Carson Oughton and David Newman against Central, which also is a young team this year.

Minooka won the first five matches to grab an early 26-0 advantage. After the Wild-

cats got their initial win, the Indians responded with a run of four more victories before the squads split the final four matches.

Tommy Haase kicked things off with a win by technical fall at 106, and Cody Hoshell followed with a pin at 113 before Dominic Ruettiger (120) and Zach McDowell (126) received forfeits. At 132, Jared Moreno claimed a 9-2 victory over Jake Warren for Minooka’s fifth win.

Joliet Catholic dancing its way to nationals SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – Joliet Catholic Academy’s dance team will compete in the National Dance Team Championship from Jan. 29 to 31 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The Angels will compete in Open Dance & Hip-Hop (Medium Varsity).

The Angels qualified over the summer by taking first place at a regional Universal Dance Association camp. The NDTC is administered by the UDA, a division of Varsity Spirit, and is the only national-level dance team championship endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

At the UDA Regionals Jan. 9 hosted at Illinois-Chicago, JCA placed third in hip-hop and fifth in jazz for its lyrical performance.

“We were missing some guys tonight, but no excuses. Minooka was the better wrestling team, and they outwrestled us and were tougher than us. Our guys need to step up and fight back. But tonight does not decide the season, so we have to be prepared both mentally and physically by next Saturday, and, hopefully, we can put a healthy team on the mat.”

In addition to the team qualifiers, 30 individuals statewide also qualified for state. Among them are Joliet West senior Matt Pesavento, Lincoln-Way West senior Anthony Castaneda, and the Bolingbrook duo of junior Steve Stropkovic and sophomore Alex Acosta.

The individuals at state will bowl six games Friday.

Then the top 30 individuals who are not on teams that advance to Saturday will themselves advance to the Saturday competition and shoot for a state championship.

The Lockport state roster consists of seniors Patrick Carney, Daniel Duplessis, Philip Jackinoski, Mike Pruchnik and Noah Zwit; junior Andy Sims; and sophomores Alec Buchaas and Dylan Smith. Ron Davis is the

champions around the state last Saturday, Collinsville’s 6,795 was the top score, followed by Sandburg at 6,684, Harlem at 6,550 and Lake Park at 6,423. Minooka’s 6,525 finished second to Sandburg.

By Carmen R. Heflin It is the start of a new year and one of your goals this year is to start an exercise program. Zach Binkley, an Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Exercise and Movement Science Program at Lewis University offers these suggestions to help you get started.

The first suggestion is to start small and simple with your exercise and try to get back into building a routine and forming good habits. It is important to establish your prior time-related habits and commitment is key. If time is an issue, which it is for everyone and is the number one reason people say they do not work out, try adding quick 10-15 minute workouts in throughout the day. Make small changes to your schedule that add in more time for physical activity, and try to establish a set routine or program for yourself.

The second suggestion is to

not do this alone. Find a group of friends or a workout partner to help combat a lack of motivation and to keep you going throughout the months. The goals of your partner or group do not necessarily have to be similar to yours, but having someone with the right mindset about working out, exercising, and goal setting can really impact your drive for working out.

A third suggestion is to be patient and diligent. Do not get discouraged because some changes physiologically may happen immediate with exercise while some take longer to show results.

The last suggestion is to hire a personal trainer.

Through assessment and dialogue, these professionals can help identify your goals and create programs to help you reach them.

The last three seasons, Minooka and Lockport have been major players in the IHSA Boys State Bowling Tournament.

Last season, Plainfield North joined the party for the first time.

The three area schools are back at it as they are among the 24 team qualifiers for the annual event that begins Friday and concludes Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.

Minooka finished second to Sandburg in last Saturday’s Sandburg Sectional at Orland Bowl. Lockport was fourth, and Plainfield North was sixth, the final qualifying spot.

The 24 teams at state will bowl six games Friday, after which the field will be cut to 12. Those 12 will continue on with six more games Saturday to determine the state champion.

If recent history is any indicator, the area qualifiers have the opportunity to fare well this weekend. Lockport finished first and Minooka fourth in 2013; Minooka was fifth and Lockport 12th in 2014; and Minooka seventh, Lockport ninth and Plainfield North 10th in 2015.

Hoyer: Cubs could win less, be better

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Cubs won 97 games in 2015 and reached the National League Championship Series.

This offseason, they have added outfielder Jason Heyward, second baseman Ben Zobrist, pitcher John Lackey and a pitcher named Adam Warren who is not a household name yet but could be a good one. Warren was acquired in a trade with the Yankees for shortstop Starlin Castro.

So what’s in store for 2016?

A hundred or more victories and a trip to the World Series?

Looking at baseball from that perspective is dangerous, of course. Nobody knows that better than Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, who was at the University of St Francis on Thursday night as the guest speaker for the annual Brown & Gold Night athletics fundraiser.

“Ninety-seven wins was wonderful, but that’s a tricky barometer,” Hoyer said before the banquet. “Our run differential last year was 81 runs.

That’s more in line with a 90or 91-win team.

“We had some luck. We won eight straight games against Milwaukee and Cincinnati to finish the season, and both of them were struggling. I won’t be evaluating how good we are in 2016 compared to 2015 in terms of wins and losses.”

Hoyer, along with president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, is largely responsible for the makeup of the Cubs and whether the names on the roster will be exactly the same on opening day as they are at the end of January.

“We talk about any other moves we could make every day,” Hoyer said. “I’m happy with where we are, but I would not say we’re done. We’re still having conversations.”

Hoyer said he stays in contact with other general managers on a daily basis.

“We try to bounce ideas off them,” he said. “Then, when we know we have a surplus in a certain area where they have a weakness, maybe we can get together on a trade. The more

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Trevor Cooney scored 22 points to lead four Syracuse players in double figures, and the Orange beat No. 25 Notre Dame, 81-66, on Thursday night.

It was the fourth victory of the season over a ranked team for Syracuse (14-8, 4-5 ACC), which built a 44-27 halftime lead and was not threatened in the second half by the Irish (14-6, 5-3), who played without injured point guard and leading scorer Demetrius Jackson.

EVANSTON – Denzel Valentine made five of Michigan State’s season-high 16 3-pointers and the 12th-ranked Spartans clamped down on cold-shooting Northwestern for a 76-45 victory Thursday night.

Keeping culture alive via storytelling ASE: The Chicago Association of Black Storytellers to present original program

These are some of the elements that ASE: The Chicago Association of Black Storytellers – a group of independent storytellers – will present in “The Oral Tradition of African American Communities,” a 90-minute program Feb. 4 at Lewis University in Romeoville.

According to information supplied by the association, “ase” is a term from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It affirms the power in words and emotions.

Michael Cunningham, who taught English at Lewis University for 37 years and is the director of the university’s Arts & Ideas program, said he reached out to Alice Collins, president of the group, and asked if members could custom-create a diverse program.

“The African-American storytelling tradition is a rich one, the way the culture passes down its wisdom or calls attention to prominent people,” Cunningham said.

“What’s emerged from the culture is a variety of ways of doing that.”

Collins said the group was happy to design a program especially for the university performance, although it would be impossible to represent the entire African culture.

“On the continent of Africa, 450 different languages are spoken,” Collins said, “and in every language, there is an oral tradition of storytelling.”

The storytellers and their art Collins said ASE is an affiliate of the National Association of Black Storytellers.

Although each storyteller is an independent artist, members work together to promote storytelling as art, as well as to educate, inspire and entertain their audiences. To that end, the group also has established a partnership with the University of Chicago Logan Center for the Arts and Black Ensemble Theatre.

The stories these artists relay are as diverse as the storytellers themselves, but can include folklore, historical or personal narratives and accounts of the Underground Railroad, Collins said.

For the Lewis University event, Collins said the storytellers’ presentation will follow a chronological progression, from a culture’s backstory through today’s spoken word.

The audience won’t hear a collection of dry facts.

“Storytelling comes from the heart and touches the heart,” Collins said. “It’s an art, but it’s an art that comes with responsibility. You tell the true story – the story you

When one is writing up bridge deals, one can get so involved in a particular theme that one can miss an alternative line of play or defense that is either worthwhile or better.

For example, in this deal from a world team championship, South played in two spades after making (by partnership agreement) a game-invitational jump guaranteeing at least a six-card suit.

West started the defense with his two top diamonds and, being an observant fellow who saw his partner’s high-low, led the diamond jack. East ruffed, but what did he do next, and has anything else struck you?

When one defender gives his partner a ruff, the card he leads sends a suit-preference signal to tell partner which suit to return after ruffing. Here, the diamond jack was West’s highest remaining diamond, so he was asking for a heart shift. If East had obeyed and led a low heart, the contract would have failed. South could have ruffed, but he would have run out of trumps before the clubs were established.

He would have won only six spades and one club. (East erred by leading a trump.)

Did you notice that West had an easier defense? At trick three, he could have cashed the club ace, then led the diamond three. If East had ruffed and returned a club for West to ruff, later East would have scored the club queen for down one.

However, this defense would have been fatal if declarer had 6-2-3-2 shape with king-queen-10-sixth of spades and ace-doubleton of hearts. Yes, that was unlikely, but West’s original defense was right because it accommodated both layouts.

Getting fewer than six hours of sleep, they note, is associated with worse health outcomes. (There is not enough evidence to say whether getting between six and seven hours of sleep a night is bad for health.)

Why does sleep deficiency impair the functioning of the brain? We don’t know for sure but recent scientific studies have revealed a surprising possibility.

The cells of the brain, like cells throughout the body, produce waste material. This waste needs to be removed from the brain, and then eliminated from the body. These recent studies have found the brain might be much better at flushing out the waste when it is sleeping. If the brain needs seven to eight hours of flushing every night, but it gets only five to six hours, the waste could accumulate.

It’s not easy to get more sleep in today’s 24hour society. You’ll need to make a real effort to make better lifestyle choices. For example, choose to go to bed earlier in the evening instead of staying up to watch TV. Also, make sure you’re not doing anything to sabotage the time you do spend in bed. Exercise regularly early in the day, avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, and keep your bedroom cool.

By doing so, you’ll boost the chances the time you do spend in bed won’t be spent tossing and turning.

Dear Dr. K: Between my young kids and a full-time job, I’m lucky if I manage five hours of sleep a night. My husband says I’m running on empty. How much sleep do I really need?

Dear Reader: You’re not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of adults sleeping fewer than six hours a night has increased by 31 percent since 1985. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Stuart Quan, professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School. He noted the many negative consequences of insufficient sleep.

Even occasional sleep deficiency makes a person more irritable and depressed. It slows reaction times and negatively affects mental and physical performance. In fact, 18 hours of continuous wakefulness has the same adverse effect on reaction time as being legally drunk. Adequate sleep also is needed for optimal learning and memory; staying awake all night impairs the learning of new information.

Being chronically sleep-deprived exacts a toll as well. One and a half weeks of just six hours’ sleep a night can have the same impact as staying awake for 24 hours straight.

Inadequate sleep also negatively affects your health. People who have sleep deficiency are at higher risk for developing high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and earlier death. In addition, inadequate sleep leads to increased hunger and a greater tendency for weight gain.

So how much sleep do you need? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend adults get at least seven hours of sleep a

Dear Abby: I’m a male in my early 50s. As a shy 21-year-old, I had minor surgery to straighten a small (but at the time, to me, ginormous) hump on my nose. I didn’t tell many people, and it boosted my confidence.

Although I can’t say I regret it, looking back I don’t think it was really needed. I met my wife a few years later and didn’t think it was important enough to mention, which doesn’t bother me.

What does bother me is my daughter, 23 and happily married, is complaining about the small hump on her nose and seriously contemplating surgery to fix it. She says she’s the only one in the family with such a nose. Her husband and my wife, neither one of whom are fans of minor cosmetic surgery, are urging her to not do it. I have kept my mouth shut so far.

I hate bringing something up I’ve kept from my wife all these years, yet I have this nagging feeling I’m betraying my daughter by not telling her she has the nose I was born with. I also worry she’ll find out and feel betrayed if I say nothing. Am I obligated to tell her? Am I a jerk if I don’t? behaving as though rhinoplasty is something to be ashamed of. It’s not. Speak up and tell your wife your daughter inherited your nose and fixing yours gave you self-confidence.
