Judge upholds 122-year sentence against Erick Maya

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge has upheld the 122-year prison sentence for convicted murderer Erick Maya.

Judge Daniel Rozak ruled Wednesday on the sentence issued by Judge Robert Livas in October. Maya had sought a reduction in sentence, and his attorney argued that Livas allowed his personal feelings to play into his sentencing of Maya.

Rozak disagreed.

“Clearly, Judge Livas should’ve exercised greater restraint in what his comments were,” Rozak said. “[But] there was no abuse of discretion. These sentences are well within the guidelines.”

On Feb. 13, 2014, Maya, 24, ambushed his ex-girlfriend, Briana Valle, 15, and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, shooting

them in the driveway of their Romeoville home. Valle died while Guerrero survived.

Maya was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a jury and faced a minimum of 79 years in jail. Livas sentenced him to 72 years in prison for the murder, 39 for attempted murder and 11 for Erick the weapon ofMaya fense and then retired from the bench in October.

Rozak said the sentences were on the “high end of the middle sentencing range” and Livas “had plenty to go.”

“The seriousness of the crime is the most important factor [in sentencing],” Rozak said. “For me, this wasn’t murder. It was more of an assassination and a coward-

ly one at that. The defendant showed absolutely no mercy to those two women in that car.”

At sentencing, Livas said Maya wore an “idiotic smirk on his face” throughout the trial. No smirk was seen Wednesday as Maya sat in the jury box throughout court proceedings. None of Valle’s or Maya’s relatives attended.

Rozak said a judge’s observations of a defendant’s demeanor can factor into determining an appropriate punishment without representing a personal bias.

“Clearly [Maya] blames the police. The prosecution. His own attorneys. He blames everyone,” Rozak said. “Judge Livas believed [his claims were] filled with contradictions, which I found interesting because that’s how it was for me in court – a lot of contradictions” in Maya’s claims to Rozak.

Posted letter makes claims against Plainfield Township Park District

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Contract negotiations with Plainfield Township Park District maintenance workers appeared to get ugly Monday when a letter alleging plans for layoffs and workplace harassment was posted on the doors of several buildings in the district.

The letter, a copy of which was attached to an email sent to The Herald-News, stated maintenance workers who have unionized received a notice from Service Employees International Union Local 73 that park district administration planned layoffs.

The statement read in part: “We now acknowledge that management’s word means nothing. We will all have fun on the path you have chosen to go down.”

“We are aware of the situation going on,” SEIU spokes-

man Adam Rosen said. “We have received information of [the park district’s] possible intentions of layoffs. And members do know, as well.”

Park District Executive Director Carlo Capalbo said the letter was found Monday morning tucked in an envelope inside a plastic bag duct taped to the main administration building door and the recreation office door.

Capalbo said the park district was unsure who left the letter.

When asked whether the district sent SEIU a notice of layoffs, Capalbo said, “We had not established layoffs. We began the proper mechanism for alteration of the park district activity.”

That “alteration” includes the potential for layoffs, he said.

Capalbo added he has continued evaluating the district, including personnel, since his

hiring as director in August.

The statement also alleged there were 11 cases of sexual harassment, three cases of “Mexican employees hurt over racial comments” by an administrator, and a manager who physically disciplined an employee.

The letter also alleged managers mishandled yearly employee reviews, and that a monthly informational letter and marketing message would be sent out.

“We have no substantial evidence or knowledge of evidence on the allegations proposed,” said Capalbo, who sent a copy of the letter to a labor attorney Monday.

Rosen declined to comment on the allegations in the letter.

Capalbo and Rosen said both sides have negotiated a contract in good faith since discussions started in August, but couldn’t say if they are close to an agreement.

LOCAL BRIEF No charges in alleged knife incident in Elwood ELWOOD – One truck driver allegedly pulled a knife on another driver during an argument Wednesday over who had first dibs on an empty cargo container.

The incident happened a little after 1 p.m. along Elwood International Port Road in the BNSF rail yard, Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said.

No one was injured and no charges were filed. The person accused of pulling the knife on the other driver has been banned from the rail yard, Hayes said. There’s a strict policy against bringing weapons onto the property.

The victim left the scene before police arrived and did not want to press charges, Hayes said.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Depending on where you stood Wednesday, day one of the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing shutdown was either the first of many headaches – or smooth sailing and a victory for public safety.

From inside Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes’ police vehicle, the shutdown of Walter Strawn Drive meant fewer interactions between truckers on Route 53 and the nearly 2,300 residents who call Elwood home.

“The people of Elwood are going to sleep good tonight because the sky is not falling,” Hayes said. “This is a victory for public safety.”

Thousands of trucks have used the 1.7-mile stretch of road just west of Route 53 daily to reach the BNSF intermodal in Elwood or the Union Pacific intermodal in Joliet. But that route now is blocked off after the Illinois Commerce Commission ruled earlier this month to shut down the railroad crossing amid safety concerns.

The crossing was closed to traffic early Wednesday morning.

Gates at that crossing were broken nearly 50 times in 2013, according to village officials, who have tried for some time to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area.

Trucks now are expected to use the Interstate 55/Arsenal Road interchange – a $68 million project completed by IDOT in 2012 to handle increased truck traffic and relieve regional traffic congestion.

Semitrailers also often use Laraway Road.

Hayes’ officers in Elwood ticketed 19 semitrailers for illegally using local roads to access the nearby industrial park. Most were ticketed for using Manhattan Road, while a handful tried cutting through town via Mississippi

It also means having to shift much of the logistics company’s operations from its Wilmington facility to Elwood, which already is at capacity, he said.

For years, his overweight customers used Walter Strawn Drive – the only access point that allows trucks more than 80,000 pounds – to enter and exit the intermodals. Now, to leave his facility, his employees must reduce the load to be considered legal.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre board formed a 12-member committee Wednesday to come up with a solution to the theater’s marquee problem – hopefully by March.

The committee was formed at a meeting at which the Rialto board might have received a check for $350,000 to take care of its marquee problem.

But the pending offer from businessman Jay Bergman fell apart last week when Rialto leaders decided the marquee solution needed to be reached in a public forum.

“We couldn’t circumvent the public process. We just couldn’t do it,” said James Smith, chairman of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority board that oversees the Rialto.

Smith said he hoped the Rialto could talk with Bergman about the donation later. Bergman, contacted after the meeting, said that was not likely.

“I never say never but it’s very unlikely,” Bergman said, “because my reason for making this contribution was to

Bergman’s $350,000 proposal came after previous donor Ed Czerkies pulled a $350,000 donation because of the ongoing marquee controversy, which included objections to his parents’ names being placed on the sign.

Bergman did not ask for any recognition on the marquee. But the modern marquee already in production would have likely gone forward largely as is. Rialto General Manager Randy Green said that $197,000 worth of work has

been done on the marquee and it is 75 percent completed.

Green said the marquee committee should be able to focus attention in ways that the full Rialto board could not. He said he hoped a recommendation would come by late March.

Two of the leaders of the marquee opposition will be on the new committee – Mary Beth Gannon and Michael Morgan from the “Rialto Belongs to the People” group.

The committee will be cochaired by Chris Clott, dean

of the College of Business and Health Administration at the University of St. Francis, and Eveann Lovero, professor and chair of the Department of Business Administration at Lewis University.

Other members include: Daniel Vera and Vicki Murphy from the Rialto board; Steve Randich and Jeffrey Hettrick from the board of Rialto Square Theatre Foundation; and Rialto volunteers Cathy Cecchi and Mike Acosta.

“It seems like you’re trying to divert the problem to some side committee,” said Brian Nelsen of Joliet told the board at the meeting.

Charlie Sullivan of Bolingbrook, who has a business in Joliet, questioned the academicians put at the head of the committee.

“We seem to have two business people rather than a historian,” he said.

Nearly a dozen applicants seek spot on Rialto board

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Tom Giarrante had received as of late Wednesday afternoon 11 applications for an opening on the Rialto Square Theatre board.

“There are a lot of good

candidates,” Giarrante said.

“It’s a good mix.”

The mayor was taking applications until the end of the business day Wednesday. He plans to begin interviewing candidates next week intends to name an appointee at the Feb. 15 City Council meeting.

Giarrante announced

at the Jan. 20 City Council meeting he was taking applications for the Rialto board opening after the two people he was considering declined the position.

Interest has grown in positions on the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority board,

which oversees the Rialto, since a controversy erupted over plans to put a new marquee on the Rialto. Two potential donors, each offering $350,000 to pay for the marquee, have pulled out as the controversy continued.

Giarrante declined to say who has applied. He said he would ask applicants during interviews whether they want their names released before he selects a candidate.

‘Chat with the Chiefs’ tackles distracted driving Emergency equipment, protocol also addressed

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The first Plainfield “Chat with the Chiefs” event Wednesday night sparked several conversations about police, fire and emergency management operations, including distracted driving and emergency equipment and protocol.

About 20 people, including representatives from several local governments and Mayor Michael Collins, came to the chat and also listened to updates from the first responder agencies.

“I had no expectations on what the turnout would be,”

said Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek, who hosted the chat at the Plainfield Law Enforcement Center.

Other tidbits of advice included clarifying that tornado sirens are meant as warnings for people outside to immediately seek shelter, not for people in homes; asking residents to download weather alert apps or purchase devices; calling village nonemergency numbers for nonemergency situations; and to make way for emergency vehicles when the white emergency light turns on at intersections with traffic lights.

Fire and police officials also shared several updates with residents, including operational reports and the different services they offer.

Three more meetings will be held this year. They start at 7 p.m. and provide light refreshments.

The next chat is scheduled for April 22 at the Plainfield Fire Protection District headquarters. The next two chats are July 22 at the Plainfield Law Enforcement Center and Oct. 28 at the Plainfield fire district headquarters.

Will County Board member thanks Minooka trustees

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Will County Board Member Don Gould thanked Minooka trustees and the village Tuesday night for working on extending the Lions Park bike path.

“I am glad we were able to work together to get the path extended,” Gould told trustees Tuesday. “I think it’s a great public safety measure which was needed for a long time and will be a good thing for the village’s future.”

Will and Grundy counties each are chipping in $100,000 toward the cost of the path, a project that’s been at the top of Mayor Pat Brennan’s list for 15 years. The path will make it safer for bikers and walkers along McEvilly Road, where there is little more than a shoulder to travel on.

Brennan noted Gould was instrumental in getting things passed by the county.

“Although he won’t tell you, he spearheaded the effort at Will County,” Brennan said.

McEvilly Road carwash demolition

After sitting vacant for the last six years, the car wash on McEvilly Road in front of the Minooka municipal building is set for demolition.

Minooka trustees voted 6-0 to approve contractor Grosshenig Inc. of New Lenox as the low bidder on the project. Grosshenig’s bid was $18,589, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

The car wash shares a parking area with Minooka Creamery restaurant and ice cream shop.

The property will be turned into green space for now, Brennan said after the meeting.

The village intends to have the demolition complete before the creamery opens again in the spring.

Judge rules dead witness’s testimony can be recited at second murder trial

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A dead witness’s testimony from a man’s first murder trial can be used in the second trial, a judge decided Wednesday.

Judge Sarah Jones granted prosecutors’ motion to recite questions and answers used during James Sitko’s time on the witness stand when Santos Loza was tried in September 2013.

A jury found Loza, 34, guilty of beating 8-month-old Kevion Bender to death in 2008 at his Joliet home, but Jones ordered another trial after reviewing case law.

Sitko, who died Jan. 3, was Bender’s grandfather.

“He was a substantial witness,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Derek Ewanic said. “Based on case law [testimony can be repeated because], the defense had

the opportunity to cross-examine him.”

When Loza is tried again, a Will County employee will read transcripts of Sitko’s testimony, and jurors will be told he has died since giving the statements under oath. Defense attorney Adam Altman said it would be less prejuSantos dicial against Loza Loza to say they are being read because Sitko is “unavailable.”

“When you’re deceased, you’re clearly unavailable,” Ewanic argued. “It could seem prejudicial to the state’s case that Sitko didn’t want to come and testify.”

Village Hall asbestos removal

Renovations at Minooka’s municipal building previously turned up asbestos in the glue in carpeting in the police department’s locker room, hallway and in the board room.

While the board room was not part of the planned renovation, the carpeting will be torn out and the asbestos removed while other parts of the building are done.

Village trustees approved a change order that allows Narvick Brothers to remove all the asbestos-laden materials at a cost of $11,443. Narvick also received approval to replace the carpet in the locker room and board room at a cost of $9,731.

The asbestos will be removed under Illinois Environmental Protection Agency rules and regulations, said Duffy.

Since Narvick already was on the locker room project, the village got a good price on the removal, Duffy said.

Loza for three months when she dropped off her son at Loza’s house in Joliet so she could go to work Oct. 26, 2008, investigators said. She returned late that night with her other son and looked in from the doorway at Kevion, who appeared to be sleeping.

Kevion was unresponsive when they awoke the next morning.

Medical experts testified the injuries – including a fractured skull – were inflicted during the time Loza was alone with the infant. He immediately was suspected by police, but was not arrested until August 2010.

Sitko continued a relationship with Loza after her son’s death, but defense lawyers only were allowed to ask during the trial about the couple’s relationship until February 2009, when they stopped seeing each other regularly.

Judge: Caesars bankruptcy case will be held in Illinois WILMINGTON, Del. – A federal judge in Delaware ruled Wednesday that the Chapter 11 case of casino giant Caesars Entertainment Corp. will proceed in Illinois, denying a motion by several creditor groups who wanted the case heard in Delaware.

The ruling by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross was a victory for Caesars, whose operating unit filed for bankruptcy protection in Chicago earlier this month just days after the creditors groups filed a petition in Delaware to force the company into involuntary bankruptcy.

Caesars is the parent company of Harrah’s Joliet Hotel and Casino.

Creditor attorneys had argued that Caesars filed in Illinois partly because it will be easier there to shield company officials from lawsuits over what they allege were improper transfers to shield the operating unit’s assets

from creditors.

Caesars attorneys contended that under bankruptcy law, Gross should defer to the company’s choice of Illinois as the best place to try to fashion a consensual plan maximizing value for all stakeholders.

“That decision is entitled to just enough deference ... to permit debtor to proceed in its chosen forum,” Gross said in an oral ruling that will be explained in detail later in a written opinion.

Although he ruled that the interest of justice “narrowly supports” Illinois as the forum for the case, even if the choice was made to protect insiders, the judge had strong words for Caesars, asserting that the company’s conduct leading up its bankruptcy filing “on its face is suspect.”

Gross noted a ruling in which a federal judge in New York said earlier this month that Caesars may have violated federal law by selling off assets and stripping away investors’ guarantees without their approval, as credi-

Rewarding such conduct could set a precedent for future cases and impair the ability of struggling companies to openly negotiate with creditors before seeking bankruptcy protection, Gross ruled.

“It’s really not a football issue,” Pfeifer said. “It’s really a youth issue. We haven’t done enough to make people understand how serious this is.

Concussion symptoms include appearing dazed or stunned and feeling headache or pressure in the head. A concussion victim also may experience nausea and vomiting.

The workshop will address the nature of concussions, diagnosis, treatment, symptoms, and establishing strong concussion policies and procedures for schools and athletic organizations.

Martin said the workshop is aimed at youths up to eighth grade, but athletes in high school should come, as well.

Pfeifer said most people have thought of concussions in the past as a kind of headache, but the damage is not as visible as it would be with a broken bone.

“With the brain, we don’t see it,” Pfeifer said. “We don’t have an idea … a lot of people believe because they’re young, they’re pliable and it’s not going to be an issue.”

Peter R. Kooyenga, 57, was arrested and booked into the Will County Jail on charges of assault, vandalism, disorderly conduct, Peter R. i n d e c e n t e x - Kooyenga posure and re57 sisting arrest.

Braidwood Police Chief Rich Girot said Kooyenga was “highly intoxicated” on the three occasions police were called to his residence at the Sands

Motel, 1179 W. Kennedy Road.

“There was an argument around 5 a.m. He locked himself in his room when officers arrived and then broke his own door to try and get out,” Girot said.

Police returned about 11 a.m. after Kooyenga reportedly became irate the motel manager had not fixed the door yet.

At 4:05 p.m. police were called for a third time when Kooyenga allegedly became angry the motel manager was using a video camera to record his behavior.

“During the argument, he dropped his pants and made lewd gestures, then broke the camera during a scuffle,” Girot said.

No one was injured.

NEW LENOX – Phil Pfeifer wants to alert New Lenox families and youth athletic organizations to the dangers of concussions.

Many people seem unaware of how dangerous a concussion is and what should be done to treat it, said Pfeifer, a member of New Lenox Safe Communities America. That’s why Pfeifer, along with several area physicians, will host a workshop on concussions at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway.

“We want to make sure our passion of young athletes is being taken care of on the field,” he said. “We have this huge rash of sports concussion injuries occurring … by no means should any head injury be considered less dangerous than any other ones.”

New Lenox Safe Communities and its Youth Sports Injury Prevention Team will host the workshop. Members will provide an educational and interactive presentation.

Joining Pfeifer will be

Scott Kenny, chiropractor and co-owner of Integrated Physical Medicine, and Jason Hurbanek, orthopaedic surgeon and partner with Hinsdale Orthopaedics.

The Illinois High School Association was sued in November 2014 for allegedly not doing enough to protect football players from concussions.

In December, the association defended its policies at a news conference in New Lenox.

A concussion is a brain injury and as many as 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur annually nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Through [New Lenox] Safe Communities, we look at preventable injuries,” said Daniel Martin, New Lenox public safety division chief. “We look at statistics, trends, we look at what our members are saying.

The concussions are a big, big thing. A lot different when I was kid.”

Concussions can occur without loss of consciousness and in any sport. But they also can occur outside of sports, such as

Lockport’s Hawthorne Preserves subdivision to get new playground

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A new playground is planned for Lockport’s Hawthorne Preserves subdivision.

It’s one of three playgrounds Lockport Township Park District officials plan to either create or refurbish.

Park District Executive Director Sue Micklevitz said the developer of homes in Hawthorne Preserves provided cash and land to the park district, which it will use to create Hawthorne Park.

On Monday, park commissioners approved the purchase of equipment for the playground, which will be near Farrell Road and 151st Street.

“This was the first step in the purchase of playground

equipment,” Micklevitz said.

She said the developer owes cash or land to the park district based on the number of people who move into the subdivision. In this case, that amount was about $51,000.

Park commissioners approved the purchase of equipment from La Grange-based NuToys Leisure Products for about $40,000, she said. The rest of the money, along with money from other funds, will be used to pay for playground equipment installation, such as swings and slides, she said.

“We do have some funds set aside to cover the remainder of the cost of [installation],” she said.

Park staff also plan to replace the playground in Arrowhead subdivision near Broken Arrow Golf Club, she

said. A new playground called Renaissance Park will be installed in Crest Hill, she said.

Water agreement, windows, lights approved

Commissioners also approved Monday the continuation of a water billing agreement with Romeoville for a pool located near Romeoville High School.

Micklevitz said the village provides water and sewer service for the pool, built in the late 1990s.

Commissioners also unanimously approved replacing windows for the Prairie Bluff Golf Club house, buying energy efficient lights for Challenge Fitness tennis courts, and buying a trailer for the transportation of maintenance equipment.

Joliet has jurisdiction over nearby Laraway Road and Centerpoint Way, while Will County has jurisdiction over Arsenal Road.

The county does not offer overweight permits and allows only grain haulers or trucks with “non-divisible loads” carrying up to 88,000 pounds.

Because Joliet does not allow truckers to access the Joliet intermodal from the north, drivers end up making an illegal U-turn farther south, heading back north to enter the industrial park.

CenterPoint Properties, the developer of both intermodals, along with trucking and logistics companies, opposes the shutdown.

CenterPoint representatives are meeting with affected businesses Thursday at its Oak Brook headquarters to discuss the situation.

Gov. Rauner among nation’s top donors in 2014 elections

CHICAGO – Multimillionaire Bruce Rauner was one of the top donors in the U.S. to 2014 state-level political campaigns, sinking more of his own money into his successful bid for Illinois governor and other races than almost any other organization or person nationwide, a new study found.

Rauner, a private equity investor who was sworn into his first public office this month, contributed more than $28 million from his personal bank account, according to campaign finance disclosures filed with the state.

The Center for Public Integrity analysis shows that was more than any other individual, and dwarfed only by contributions made by the Republican Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association.

Trustees to vote again on buyout for College of DuPage head

GLEN ELLYN – Trustees of the College of DuPage are expected to take another vote on a $762,000 buyout package for the school’s president.

The board of trustees last week voted 6-1 to accept the severance deal for President Robert Breuder. The deal will pay Breuder nearly three times his base salary when he retires

in March 2016, three years before his current contract expires. He’s been the college’s president since January 2009.

Officials of the college have refused to elaborate on what the new vote is about.

Board Chairman Erin Birt calls Wednesday’s vote “a simple procedural thing.” She adds the contract has been approved by the board and will remain approved.

Report: Marijuana market could reach $36M in 2016

CHICAGO – Patients aren’t the only ones disappointed by delays in Illinois’ medical marijuana program. Investors’ hopes for financial returns are fading, at least for this year, according to a new report.

ArcView Market Research, a California consulting company, is telling investors the Illinois

market could eventually expand to $36 million when it gets off the ground in 2016, but there will be far less revenue this year because of delays. Gov. Bruce Rauner plans to conduct a legal review of the program after former Gov. Pat Quinn declined to award business licenses before leaving office this month.

Because of the setbacks, which will delay planting of the first legal crop, ArcView predicts the state’s 2015 market to be worth just $5.7 million, according to figures released exclusively to The Associated Press this week.

Warren Buffett’s sister donates $100M to Northwestern

EVANSTON – Billionaire investor Warren Buffett’s sister has donated $100 million to Northwestern University, which the suburban Chicago school

says is the largest single gift in its history.

Northwestern announced the donation on Wednesday morning from Roberta Buffett Elliott. The money will be used to create the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Studies.

Elliott is a 1954 history graduate of Northwestern. It will fund professorships, research, scholarships, student travel grants, visiting scholars and graduate student fellowships, among other initiatives.

The university says Elliott’s gift is part of its $3.75 billion fundraising campaign. School officials say including this donation she has given about $110 million to Northwestern.

Northwestern President Morton Schapiro says Elliott’s gift will “fundamentally transform” the school’s global programming.

By ERICA WERNER and ERIC TUCKER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Confronting skeptical Republicans, attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch pledged a new start with Congress and independence from President Barack Obama Wednesday, even as she defended the president’s unilateral protections for millions of immigrants in the country illegally.

“If confirmed as attorney general, I would be myself. I would be Loretta Lynch,” the nominee told her Senate confirmation hearing as Republicans showered criticism on the current occupant of the job, Eric Holder. They said Holder was contemptuous of Congress and too politically close to Obama, and repeatedly demanded assurances that Lynch would do things differently.

“You’re not Eric Holder, are you?” Texas Republican John Cornyn, one of the current attorney general’s most persistent critics, asked at

one point.

“No, I’m not, sir,” Lynch responded with a smile.

It was a moment that summed up a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that often was more about Obama and Holder than about Lynch, who is now the top federal prosecutor for parts of New York City and Long Island. If confirmed, she would become the nation’s first black female attorney general.

Holder, Cornyn contended, “operated as a politician using the awesome power conferred by our laws on the attorney general.”

Lynch asked the senator to take note of “the independence that I’ve always brought to every particular matter,” and she said that when merited she would say no to Obama.

On immigration, Lynch faced numerous questions from Republicans critical of the administration’s new policy granting work permits and temporary deportation relief to some 4 million people who are in the coun-

try illegally. The committee chairman, Republican Chuck Grassley of Iowa, called the effort “a dangerous abuse of executive authority.”

Lynch said she had no involvement in drafting the measures but called them “a reasonable way to marshal limited resources to deal with the problem” of illegal immigration. She said the Homeland Security Department was focusing on removals of “the most dangerous of the undocumented immigrants among us.”

Pressed by Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, a leading immigration hard-liner, she said citizenship was not a right for people in the country illegally but rather a privilege that must be earned.

However, when Sessions asked whether individuals in the country legally or those who are here unlawfully have more of a right to a job, Lynch replied, “The right and the obligation to work is one that’s shared by everyone in this country regardless of how they came here.”

The Associated Press SHEAR YASHUV, Israel – The Lebanese militant Hezbollah group fired a salvo of missiles at an Israeli military convoy in a disputed border area Wednesday, killing two soldiers and triggering deadly clashes that marked the most serious escalation since the sides’ 2006 war.

The flare-up, which also left a U.N. peacekeeper dead, added to the regional chaos brought on by neighboring Syria’s civil war. Hezbollah indicated the attack was in retaliation for a deadly Israeli strike on its fighters inside Syria earlier this month.

Thailand, a long-standing U.S. ally, has been under martial law since the military staged a coup last May. BEIRUT – The Islamic State group released a message late Wednesday purportedly by Japanese hostage Kenji Goto, extending the deadline for Jordan’s release of an Iraqi would-be hotel bomber linked to al-Qaida.

The audio was released as Jordan had offered a precedent-setting prisoner swap to the Islamic State group in a desperate attempt to save a Jordanian air force pilot the militants purportedly threatened to kill, along with Goto.

The audio recording, in English, said the Jordanians must present Sajida al-Rishawi at the Turkish border by sunset Thursday, or Jordanian pilot Mu’as al-Kasaseabeh will be killed.

The Associated Press could not independently verify the contents of the recording, which was distributed on Twitter by IS-affiliated accounts.

On Wednesday, the pilot’s father met with Jordan’s king who he said assured him that “everything will be fine.”

Illinois voters are getting the change they voted for Gov. Bruce Rauner didn’t completely close the door to higher taxes last week during a speech at the University of Chicago, but he made it very clear with what he said and did that he wants huge state budget cuts.

“We have every reason to thrive,” Rauner said. He then laid out his reasoning for why the state is on a “fundamentally unsustainable path,” pointing his finger at the “policies and the politics mostly coming out of Springfield [which are] really at the core of the problem.”

“The politicians want to talk about, ‘Well, let’s raise the income tax to fix the debt or the problem,’” Rauner said. “Raising taxes will come nowhere near to fixing the problem and, in fact, will make part of the problem worse and just kick the can down the road. ...

This is the critical lesson that we’re seeing. We’re on an unsustainable path. We need fundamental structural change, and raising taxes alone in itself isn’t going to fix the problem – and in a lot of ways it’s going to make it worse.”

Rauner said the budget was “out of control” and the state has suffered “complete mismanagement.”

“Just raising taxes to try to fix that? No chance. No chance,” Rauner said.

Notice how he said “just raising taxes,” and “raising taxes alone.” Those usually are phrases uttered by politicians who are keeping the door open for higher revenues, however slightly.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DON’T CUT STATE FUNDING OF HUMAN SERVICE GROUPS To the Editor:

Since the election of Bruce Rauner as governor, there has been much speculation regarding his action on the state’s budget.

Human service providers that receive funding from the state are very concerned. This sector has been informed the only programs that will continue to receive funding are those that are mandated, court-ordered or reimbursed by Medicaid. All other agencies are at very high risk of losing funding, which supports our services.

The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living provides a vast array of one-of-a-kind services to people with any disability of any age. One of the most important programs we provide is our Community Reintegration Program. In this program, we assist eligible people with disabilities in leaving nursing homes and moving into their own residences. On average, the state pays between $35,000 to $72,000 annually to keep someone in a nursing home. When that person is reintegrated into the community, the annual cost

to the state is roughly $10,000 to $12,000. The savings to the state are obvious; they can be measured in dollars. The freedom a person with a disability enjoys living in their own residence is priceless.

Perhaps Springfield needs to be “shaken up.” However, slashing the budgets of Human Service providers that literally save the lives of thousands of Illinoisans would be senseless. Such actions will result in more unemployment, a negative impact on local and state economies, and a lack of services for thousands of persons with disabilities, domestic violence victims, homeless citizens, etc. The governor and legislators must ask themselves if this is the direction in which the state should go.

Elected officials must craft a budget that does not reduce state funding of Human Service organizations that provide valuable services. It is your responsibility to locate resources that will support these vital programs.

JOLIET – Things were looking pretty good for Joliet Junior College’s men’s basketball team after it grabbed an 18-point lead over Milwaukee Area Technical College early in the final half of Wednesday’s game at Fizz Wills Gym. But things can change quickly in North Central Community College Conference play, especially against a ranked opponent, and that’s just what happened to the Wolves.

MATC used a 14-0 run to get back into the contest and then held off a late JJC rally to capture a 73-71 victory.

The Wolves (16-7, 2-5) experienced a long drought from the field in the final half, which allowed the 10th-ranked Stormers (18-4, 5-2) to turn a 5234 deficit into a 54-53 lead.

“We had a hard time scoring, and our defensive rebounding was nonexistent,” Wolves coach Joe Kuhn said.

“It’s pretty tough when you play defense and you don’t rebound. I thought that they just killed us inside. I think our shot selection early in the second half really doomed us.

“That led to some easier run-outs for them – and coupled with the lack of defensive rebounding, you can’t beat a good team. We’ve lost a couple in a row in basically the same

way, so at some point the players have to look within themselves.”

JJC led, 47-32, at halftime, then stretched its advantage to 52-34 shortly after the break after a 3-pointer from Alex Parks (six points) and a layup

MATC’s Evan Burlingame made a pair of layups to cap the 14-0 run to pull his team to within 52-48 with 13:41 left.

Then after Daymeann Stewart (17 points) hit a free throw, the Stormers got three straight layups from Austin Dunbar to grab a 54-53 lead.

The visitors took a 65-60 lead with 5:33 left on a 3-pointer by Allante Washington, and the Wolves’ comeback hopes stayed alive after MATC missed four close shot tries during its next possession.

“I was making the turn and slipped and fell on first base,” he said. “I fell out of nowhere, super hard. When I went to stand up, my knee stayed down and my foot stayed in the dirt. I went from the ultimate high of hitting the home run in a playoff game to that.”

Smith has had knee injuries, but never like that, he said. “I felt the pain.

I could feel the skin behind my knee, but otherwise, it felt like an empty space,” he said. “But all the stars lined up. If that was the last time I ever swung a bat, it would be awesome. I knew right there everything was OK. “I thought about crawling around the base, but I said, ‘That’s not happening.’ Literally, step by step, my whole life flashed before my eyes. It was like an out-of-body experience, but I was very aware. There was some spiritual stuff happening. It was awesome.”

Smith eyed second base as he struggled to balance on his left leg, then began his one-footed hop. He heard the umpire offer assistance but heard nothing else. He declined a pinch-runner, which by league rule was legal in his situation. His right leg dangling,

he was hoping the opposing second baseman and shortstop would not offer assistance. If they did, he would say no.

He got past second base, looked at third and started hopping toward it.

“All of a sudden it got so loud,” he said. “I was like, ‘This is awesome.’ I started hitting my chest. I was in my own world. Then I noticed something move and I jumped back into a state of consciousness. I was hopping along pretty good. The third base coach didn’t know what to do when I got there. It was like he saw a ghost.

“Then your boys at the plate [his teammates] are there to support you. I was so proud to be part of that. I said, ‘Guys, just don’t start jumping on me.’

Smith says he swung the bat and hit the home run, all right, but of the Hollywood-like aftermath: “Somehow, it was just supposed to happen like that.

Gary Gaetti was my manager, and he and some guys on the other team said they never saw anything like that.

The catcher on the other team texted me after the game, when we had just beaten them in a playoff game, and said, ‘You’re my hero.’ That brought a tear to my eye.

“I’ve played on five championship teams along the way. I’ve had cool moments, but this is the coolest moment of my career.”

I’ve known Smith since he played for Joliet Township. When he says he did the seemingly impossible for his team, his community and his family, believe him.

“I didn’t do it for the limelight,” he said. “I did it because that’s how I play ball, day in and day out. Good or bad, I give it everything I’ve got and play to win every night. I have the same mentality in my personal life, when people aren’t watching.”

As difficult as the rehab has been, it is nothing Smith cannot handle. He

moved to Arizona just this week because it is more conducive to working on baseball, and rehabbing injuries, year-round. At 32 years old, he says he is in the best shape of his life and plans to continue playing for as long as someone will have him.

Meanwhile, he has more to do, with the help of his home run hop.

“This was my most fortunate situation in life,” he said. “I’ve been on Good Morning America and Yahoo Sports. I opened up SportsCenter on ESPN. Marketing people are communicating with me. They put me on major networks. Baseball America is doing a story, and I just did an interview with CBS.” He also earned a “Best Person In Sports” nod from Fox Sports Live.

And, he had the opportunity at the Pitch & Hit banquet to speak of the inspirations that Ron Santo, Ernie Banks and Jackie Robinson were.

Smith said he has formed a partnership with Enroll America.

“I’m helping spread the word about the Feb. 15 deadline for the Affordable Care Act,” he said. “The ACA brings awareness. Nobody like me with a torn patella can be denied coverage.

At the end of the day, you need health coverage.

“Coming from this community, I want to help as many people as I can. I wouldn’t change anything, even before this happened.”

That’s what Sean Smith is all about.

Good things are happening to a good guy.

The roster of award winners at the annual Chicago Pitch & Hit Club banquet often includes a Joliet-area connection.

Never, though, has there been one with a story to tell quite like his.

Sean Smith, who was selected out of high school at Joliet Township by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2000 draft, has played professionally for 15 seasons. Most recently, he has been in the independent Atlantic League. His “Hop Seen ’Round the World,” which has drawn nearly 2 million hits on YouTube, merited his selection for Pitch & Hit’s Ron Santo Inspiration Award at Sunday’s banquet.

Late last September, Smith’s team – the York Revolution – was trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 3 in the semifinal playoff series against Lancaster. Smith belted a game-tying home run to left field. York won that game to take a 2-1 lead in the five-game series, although Lancaster would win in five.

No matter. The aftermath of Smith’s home run trot – make that, home run hop – captivated the sports world.

After knocking the ball out of the park, Smith tore the patella in his right knee when he had about 270 feet remaining as he rounded the bases.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com Coal City and Wilmington renew their rivalry on the mat Friday, and the stakes should be a bit higher than they have been the past two seasons.

That’s because the Coalers and Wildcats figure to be the favorites in Feb. 7’s regional ahead of Plano, which has captured the last two regional titles.

Those three, along with ReedCuster, will make the long trek to Chicago’s southwest side to join seven city schools in the Class 1A Agricultural Science Regional.

The winner of the regional will advance to the dual team Plano Sectional and be favored to earn a trip to the state quarterfinals in Bloomington.

Although Coal City is ranked fifth and Wilmington eighth in the latest GEI Wrestling Apparel rankings on Illinois Matmen, the Wildcats prevailed when the teams last met.

In last weekend’s Interstate Eight Conference meet, coach Rob Murphy’s Wildcats beat Mark Masters’ Coalers, 220-193, for top honors. Both squads had four champions, but Wilmington had 11 in the top four, compared to seven for Coal City.

Earlier this month, Coal City took fifth and Wilmington was seventh at the Princeton Invitational, which featured most of the state’s top Class 1A programs.

The Coalers got the upper hand when the pair competed in the dual team St. Thomas More New Year’s Challenge after Coal City fell, 34-30, to No. 3 Lena-Winslow for the championship while the Wildcats settled for 11th place.

Both squads are enjoying excellent dual meet seasons, with the Wildcats carrying a 25-5 mark and the Coalers a 24-3 record into the 6 p.m. matchup at Coal City Middle School.

“Wilmington has a solid team with a lot of depth in the middle and upper weights,” Masters said. “They can move guys around and get the matchups they’d like to have in a dual. Rob and his staff do a great job of getting the most out of their guys when it counts the most.”

The veteran Wildcats coach is interested to see how the latest meeting develops.

“They have a great dual team this year,” Murphy said. “If you look at common scores against other teams, they are blowing them out, and ours

While Wilmington has been a staple in the dual meet tournament of late, qualifying eight times since 2002 and winning five trophies, including state titles from 2007 to 2009, Coal City hasn’t advanced to the event since 1999, a year after it won its third second-place trophy.

Regardless of who emerges as regional champion, both sides also will be focused on advancing as many individuals as they can to the Wilmington Sectional and then getting plenty of medal winners in Champaign before the dual team tournament gets underway.

“We really surprised ourselves at the I-8 Conference tournament when we won it,” Murphy said. “I have a good group of seniors, and we are going to just go out there and do our best. The regional should be a dog fight with Plano, Coal City, Wilmington and Reed-Custer at Ag Science.

We are going to need some help from the other teams to have a chance to win.”

After getting bumped out of the dual team tournament so often by the Wildcats, the Coalers hope that this finally may be their year.

“I know our guys are amped up looking forward to regionals,” Masters said. “We haven’t won one since 1999.

I think we’ve been second 11 times in that span, and it’s been second to Wilmington in most of those years.

Our goal is always to win the regional and advance as many guys as we can to the state tournament. In order for us to win the regional, we need to have a lot of things go our way. Scoring bonus points and winning the close matches will be at a premium in order for us to knock off Wilmington.”

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Jerian Grant had 23 points and 12 assists and No. 8 Notre Dame made two shots in the final 67 seconds as the shot clock ran out to beat No. 4 Duke, 77-73, on Wednesday night.

Grant lost control of the ball, picked it up at the free throw line and got a shot off just in time to give the Irish a 73-70 lead with 67 seconds left. After Quinn Cook hit a pair of free throws, Grant looked as though he was holding for a shot. But he fired it over to Steve Vasturia in the corner for a 3-pointer, giving the Irish a 76-72 lead. Grant then blocked a layup attempt to end the threat by Duke.

The win keeps Notre Dame (20-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which finished in 13th place in its first season in the league last year, in second-place halfway through the conference season, a game behind Virginia.

Duke (17-3, 4-3) is off to its worst start in league play since opening the 1995-96 3-4 after losing their first four league games.

The game was a battle of two player-of-the-year candidates and Grant came up with the big plays at the end. Jahlil Okafor led Duke with 22 points and 17 rebounds, but he was 2-of-7 from the free throw line, including 1-of-5 in the final 4:30. Duke was just 10-of-20 from the free-throw line while the Irish were 11-of-16.

CHICAGO – The White Sox were looking to add versatility to their lineup, so they decided to bring back infielder Gordon Beckham after trading him last season.

Beckham agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract with the Sox, which cleared a roster spot by designating outfielder Dayan Viciedo for assignment on Wednesday.

General manager Rick Hahn wanted to give manager Robin Ventura more options.

“It certainly was very import-

ant for us,” Hahn said, “to find a way to provide more flexibility in the lineups for Robin so that he has the ability to play matchups more easily – defensive substitutions, offensive matchups, left-right matchups when appropriate. Signing Gordon is another step in that direction.”

Beckham has spent almost all of his six big league seasons with the Sox, who traded him to the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 21. He made $4,175,000 last season, when he hit .226, and Los Angeles declined to offer him a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline, making him a free agent.

He said he is excited to return to the Sox, particularly with the team poised to contend in the AL Central after back-to-back losing seasons. The Sox added pop to its lineup by signing Adam LaRoche and bolstered its rotation by trading for right-hander Jeff Samardzija. The Sox also brought in closer David Robertson and outfielder Melky Cabrera, along with reliever Zach Duke.

“The moves have definitely been eye-opening,” Beckham said. “There’s definitely a willingness to win. I think it’s going to be a good team. It’s going to be fun to win.”

Belichick, Carroll two peas in a pod?

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush PHOENIX – It is impossible to experience a Super Bowl week without every story line and all of the minutest details surrounding every individual involved in the game going under the microscope and coming out analyzed to death.

So it surprises me that little or nothing at all has been written or said about the relationships and similarities between Seattle coach Pete Carroll, New England coach Bill Belichick and New England owner Robert Kraft.

Have we all forgotten that Carroll was the head coach of the Patriots from 1997 to 1999 compiling 10-6, 9-7 and 8-8 seasons, making two trips to the playoffs and that Belichick was his successor?

Carroll is a huge fan of Kraft to this day.

“Robert (Kraft) was a really good partner to work with back in the day,” Carroll said.

“He gave me an opportunity that I will always be grateful for. He also sent me out the door, too, and I remember that. We’ve maintained over the years a very respectful relationship and he’s done a remarkable job.”

And Belichick is a Carroll guy, too.

out by findings of rampant rules violations while he skipped town just ahead of the posse to take the Seattle job.

Asked about that on media day, Carroll responded he never talks about it because he still thinks the NCAA was wrong. Mmm huh.

Earlier this season, Seattle was fined more than $300,000 and docked two 2015 minicamp practices because of Carroll overseeing illegal practices this past summer.

I guess they both are cheaters, but only the Patriots coach is being branded with the scarlet “C” this week. Is that because Belichick has won so much more than Carroll, or because Carroll is so much more media friendly?

Kraft is one of the most respected owners in the NFL. Has he gotten there by employing cheaters?

Kraft doesn’t think so, and said this week about the latest scandal surrounding his team: ”I want to make it clear that I believe, uncondition-

ally, that the New England Patriots have done nothing inappropriate in this process or in violation of NFL rules.

“Tom, Bill and I have been together for 15 years. They are my guys, they are part of my family. And Bill, Tom and I have had many difficult discussions over the years, and I have never known them to lie to me. That is why I am confident in saying what I just said.”

Carroll actually spoke out in support of Belichick on the under-inflated balls issue.

“I’m much better versed today than I was a week or so ago. I never checked on the whole process of how our footballs were handled until this week. I can empathize with Coach Belichick in that same way. I never have, so I can understand that he never has either.”

So where does this all leave us?

Do we want to go with all’s fair in love and war, or it ain’t cheating unless you get caught? No, that’s not right.

Perhaps these clearly are the two best coaches and the two best teams in the NFL because they’re willing to do whatever it takes to win, and as we all know, winning isn’t the most important thing, it’s the only thing.

New Lenox Area Historical Society to offer program about historical New Lenox church If you go

That’s what Bob Romadka heard while copying some historical materials recently for a planned historical presentation in honor of Trinity Lutheran Church’s 75th anniversary.

This is why Romadka and Edward A. Tatro, both members of the New Lenox Area Historical Society, as well as longtime members of the church, are offering this multi-faceted program Feb. 5.

Tatro plans a presentation with photos of the building’s construction, pastors, church leaders, organizations, Sunday and youth classes, as well as anecdotes of the past. For instance, Tatro can recall the original parsonage – a two-story house next door to the church – and how as a youth, he cut the grass on the property.

“We kept everything in the little one-car garage,” Tatro said.

The first Sunday school was March 31, with 15 students.

Tatro said the program will include information on the area’s first Lutheran presence, which dates back to 1850, he said.

In fact, Tatro said, Trinity Lutheran’s first dedicated

worship space was a basement chapel.

“It was the middle of the war, and there was not a lot of building materials available or no contractors to build it,” Tatro said, “so they built it by themselves.”

Furthermore, Romadka and Tatro are interested in hearing from anyone with artifacts, memories and doc-

uments they’d like to share.

Their goal is to preserve as much history as possible before it becomes lost forever.

“At the 50th [anniversary], we had people that could tell us about starting the church,” Tatro said. “Now, they are long gone.”

Romadka will focus on interesting details on the church’s windows, such as

Q 1951 – Construction began to complete the church.

Q 1952 – Dedication of the completed building was Sept. 28.

Church membership grew to 177.

Q 1955 – Trinity acquired real estate adjacent to the church for a parsonage and parking.

Q 1961 – Property for a new parsonage across the street was bought for $2,200.

Q 1963 – The first Vacation Bible School was held.

Q 1966 – Construction began on an educational wing.

Q 1976 – The new facility was dedicated Sept. 25.

Q 1976 – Pastor Paul Bacon became the fifth pastor. During his tenure, church membership increased to 600 people.

Q Late 1970s – Church sponsored a Laotian refugee – Yang Ton – and his family.

Q 1983 – A preschool was established under the direction of the pastor’s wife, Annette Bacon.

Present director is Janine Welsh Q 2011 – Pastor Douglas Hoag observed mission work in India, which resulted in Trinity supporting two indigenous Indian missionaries in their training in Hyderabad, India Q Today – Two worship services are offered – traditional and

contemporary. For more than 30 years, the church has participated in New Lenox’s Good Friday Cross Walk. The church supports the following ministries – MorningStar Mission in Joliet, New Lenox Food Pantry, Feed My Starving Children, SowHope Women’s Ministries and St. Matthew’s Congregation in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

“It’s the story of people,” Tatro said.

St. Mary students host Our Lady of Guadalupe prayer service The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – The entire sixthgrade class at St. Mary Nativity Catholic School prepared a bilingual prayer service and procession for the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12.

A school parent, Frank Lozano, a member of a mariachi band, had the band perform customary songs. The school’s madrina coordinator and school parent, Adrianna Westerhausen, read the first scripture in Spanish and helped translate other parts of the prayer service, which several students read.

Next, five students acted the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearances to Juan Diego in 1531. Rachel Carreno

made her own Our Lady of Guadalupe costume with the help of school sewing instructor, Kris Brozovich.

Jalen Turley was Juan Diego, who wore an image of Our Lady on his burlap “tilma.”

Louie Velasquez played the bishop, Kelly Fitzgerald was the doorkeeper, and Nolan Nemanich was Juan’s uncle.

After the short skit, the students and others in attendance processed out of the church, with J.T. Morales and Angell Garcia leading the way, carrying a large picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The students filed out of church in procession carrying red roses, pictures of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe, and posters honoring Mary as the Protectress of the

Unborn and Patroness of the Americas.

During the procession, school students prayed the Hail Mary in Spanish, which they had practiced in homeroom, Spanish and religion classes.

Back in the church, general intercessions were prayed in both Spanish and English. The mariachi band played again to conclude the celebration.

Upper grades religion teacher Carol Stiff organized and executed the prayer service.

Over the last two days, we have seen that defensive leads in the middle of a deal may transmit important information. But that is, of course, also true of the opening lead. It should throw light on the leader’s holding in that suit.

In this deal, for example, what should West lead against three notrump?

Inexperienced players holding that North hand always want to show their diamond suit. When asked if they want to play in five diamonds, rather than in three no-trump, their answer is usually along these lines: “Oh, no, but I just wanted to tell my partner about my suit. The risk: Older adults don’t break down this medication well. If you take it at night, you might feel groggy and confused even hours later. This can lead to falls and injuries when you get up to urinate in the middle of the night, or in the morning on awakening.

What to do: Avoid medications with antihistamines, unless your doctor says they’re OK. Finally, a word about combination medicines.

These drugs contain several medications in one dose. They may include a painkiller, a cough suppressant and a decongestant.

But you may not need all of the medications.

Treating symptoms you don’t have exposes you to medicine you don’t need. That unnecessarily puts you at risk for side effects. To minimize the risk, choose cold remedies that treat only the symptoms you have.

Dear Reader: Your wife is correct. Clearly, you should listen to her more often.

Painkillers, decongestants, antihistamines and combination remedies – even those available over the counter – can sometimes cause health problems.

They can interact with other drugs and can interfere with existing conditions.

When choosing a cold medication, read the list of active ingredients.

Older adults in particular should pay close attention to the following ingredients: DECONGESTANTS narrow blood vessels, which can help reduce inflammation in your nasal passages.

The risk: Decongestants are also stimulants, which means they can increase your blood pressure. They can increase your heart rate and cause anxiety or insomnia. These drugs can cause problems for people with heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. That’s because increased blood pressure and heart rate, and anxiety, put a strain on the heart. So do poor quality sleep and diabetes.

What to do: Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using them.

ACETAMINOPHEN relieves pain and reduces fevers.

The risk: Too much acetaminophen (more than 3,000 to 4,000 milligrams per day) can harm your liver. Alcohol can increase the harmful effect.

Dear Abby: I am in a great relationship with a wonderful man, “Kevin.” He loves me very much and we get along well. I have three kids – two with special needs – and Kevin loves them and treats them like his own. He also has a son, age 6, who has cystic fibrosis.

I love Kevin and can see myself marrying him. The problem is, I don’t think I like his son. He’s a good kid, cute and funny, but I don’t feel “love” for him. I’m affectionate with my own kids, but I have to force myself to be with this boy. I am easily irritated by him and sometimes just don’t want to be bothered.
