O’Dekirk outlines progress, plans JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk in his State of the City speech Wednesday said Joliet ended 2015 with an unexpected budget surplus, and then shared several plans he has for the city for 2016.

The mayor gave his address at a luncheon meeting Bob O’Dekirk of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry at the Joliet Country Club.

O’Dekirk presented a long to-do list for the coming year that ranged from initiating the long-contemplated opening of Chicago Street downtown to adding an enforcement officer to deal with vicious dogs.

He also said the city will try to repeat a budgetary outcome that was accomplished at the end of 2015 – turning a projected $8.6 million deficit into a $1.7 million end-ofyear surplus.

The city “budgeted correctly,” O’Dekirk said.

The budget got a big boost in revenues because of economic development in the past year from projects such as the Amazon.com fulfillment center that opened and the massive Ikea distribution center in the works, he said.

Most of those projects started under O’Dekirk’s predecessor, Thomas Giarrante. Some, including a $21

million Whirlpool distribution center, have been announced since O’Dekirk took office in May. O’Dekirk said growth will continue, mentioning that he has signed a number of nondisclosure agreements for developments being contemplated in Joliet.

year-end deficit of more than $6 million.

The mayor presented a long action agenda for 2016.

He said he expects major progress in 2016 on plans for a Houbolt Road toll bridge connecting the CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet with Interstate 80 and future widening of Interstate 80.

O’Dekirk also said he expects an agreement with Will County, and perhaps even the start of construction, for the connection of Chicago Street from downtown to Interstate 80, a route now interrupted by a courthouse parking lot.

“I think in 2016 you’re going to see a continued push to revitalize the downtown area,” he said.

O’Dekirk also said he supports adding field turf to Silver Cross Field, an idea recently proposed by the Joliet Slammers as a way to attract more events and people to the city’s baseball stadium.

Addressing an issue that has come up since a pit bull attack earlier this month, O’Dekirk said he wants to hire an enforcement officer to go along with the revamping of the city’s ordinance for vicious dogs.

Rialto events planned for 90th anniversary in May

No state budget, but collective bargaining changes, job growth No. 1 priority

SPRINGFIELD – Even as Illinois remains without a budget, Gov. Bruce Rauner on Wednesday used his second State of the State address to double down on his call for the Democrat-controlled Legislature to go along with his pro-business, anti-union agenda.

His speech left Democrats with few positive things to say about the rookie governor, but Republican lawmakers said they support his call for a spending plan that’s paired with structural reforms, including changes to collective bargaining.

Speaking very little on the state’s budget gridlock, which has left social service agencies reeling, Rauner said businesses and jobs are leaving Illinois left and right because of the state’s costly workers’ comp system, liabilities, labor regulations and high property taxes.

“All I’m asking is a return to balance in this state ... [because] right now, we don’t have competitive balance and jobs are leaving,” Rauner said in his speech.

Unions, collective bargaining

Democrat lawmakers were quick to criticize Rauner, who went so far as to say recent contract demands from the state’s largest public employees union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, are “out of touch with reality.”

Republican lawmakers, on the other hand, agreed with Rauner’s call to “install common sense into [Illinois] union contracts,” remove red tape from the state procurement process and hold universities more accountable.

“He does not like unions, and for whatever reason, he thinks Illinois will not move forward until collective bargaining is destroyed. But the Senate majority and House majority doesn’t think that way,” she said.

There are several areas in which Democrats and Republicans agree – including the need to better fund schools, Larry Walsh reduce recidi- Jr. vism rates and D-Elwood enact pension reform, said state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood.

“If he would get off the unions, there could be more movement on some of his agenda items,” Walsh Jr. said.

But Rauner hardly backed down Wednesday, saying “taxpayers are losing from the hidden costs of work rules buried in previous [state employee] contracts,” such as AFSCME’s ability to

file grievances against volunteer efforts or to manipulate overtime policies to boost pay.

More accountability, less red tape

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said Rauner “hit upon a lot of things that [Batinick has] been talking about” for some time, including the need to consolidate gov-

ernment and freeze property taxes while scaling down unfunded mandates for local governments.

B a t i n i c k Mark Batinick also has long R-Plainfield advocated for Rauner’s desire to pull back much of the red tape associated with the state’s procurement, or purchasing, system.

That would attract business to Illinois, he said.

Rauner also announced a 10-point education plan to increase funding and focus on poor districts while “setting rigorous benchmarks for program performance.”

Hundreds visit Joliet Central student center More online

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hundreds of people came to see the new Joliet Central High School student center and galleria space at its grand opening Wednesday.

District 204 Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy wanted to see if the crowd gathered in the new cafeteria inside the student center was as amazed as she was when they first walked into the building.

“If you did, could you just cheer real loud if you feel the same way I do?” she asked.

Cheers, claps and whistles from the audience followed.

The 43,164-square-foot student center addition to the Central campus building has a galleria space more than 7,000 square feet in size and a cafeteria that can house up to 600 students – about 250 more than the previous one.

The center also has a student-run office for Abri Credit Union, a bookstore, a technology help desk and presentation rooms.

The student center was designed to feature some of the same Collegiate Gothic architecture from the historic Central campus building.

Wight & Co. served as designer and architect of record

for the student center project.

Gilbane Building Co. provided construction management services. Kevin Havens, Wight & Co. executive vice president and design director, said that when the original Central building was designed, the Collegiate Gothic style was chosen

to represent the highest levels of educational achievement.

Despite its historical trappings, the student center is a “thoroughly modern building,” Havens said.

“You get the sense that connecting the past with the future was really the mission of the project,” he said.

Former Central Principal John Randich appeared at Wednesday’s grand opening, remarking that the facility is what he believed to be the final addition to an amazing building phase he was a part of as principal.

“Today is not only a celebration of the grand opening of the new student center but for me a fitting conclusion to the facility upgrades that were accomplished over the last 20 years, designed to improve the learning environment for Central students,” he said.

Plainfield police release 2015 crime statistics at ‘Chat with Chiefs’

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The official report hasn’t come out yet, but Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek released the village’s annual FBI crime reporting data for last year’s “Part 1” offenses at a public meeting Wednesday night.

Konopek presented the data during the quarterly “Chat with the Chiefs” public forum.

According to the data, the crime index for the village, the total number of Part 1 offenses per 1,000 residents, rose from 8.64 to 9.16.

Even at 9.16, Konopek said that the crime index is low, adding that all the categories are significantly less than

years before 2014.

“Obviously, we want all these numbers to be zero,” Konopek said. “We still remain one of the safest communities in the state.”

Part 1 offenses include criminal homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault and aggravated battery, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, arson and human traffic offenses.

According to the data, Plainfield in 2015 reported one criminal homicide, 10 rapes, seven robberies, 21 aggravated assaults and batteries, 44 burglaries, 291 thefts, 10 motor vehicle thefts, two arsons and no human trafficking offenses.

“Even though we may have seen an increase, in almost every one of the crimes, [homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault and batteries,] the offender was known by the victim,” Konopek said, explaining that it means a higher crime index doesn’t indicate there are more criminals on

the streets.

Arsons were down considerably from last year, which produced a string of related juvenile arsons.

Traffic offenses

Sgt. Eric Munson presented statistics on the top 15 areas for traffic crashes in 2015 at the meeting.

More than half of the list was intersections with Route 59, with the top four belonging to Route 59 intersections with Renwick at 62 crashes, Route 126 at 44, 135th Street at 37 and Lockport Street at 36.

Munson said more than half of the crashes involved were fender-benders where drivers on cellphones were likely the culprit.

Munson and Konopek were asked whether Plainfield police are giving tickets for expired vehicle registration stickers, since Illinois Secretary of State Jessie White’s Office announced it would not be mailing out reminders to save on budget.

“It is up to officer discretion,” Konopek said. “But based on what we’ve been looking at so far, officers have been leaning on the side of the residents versus the law.”

Konopek also announced Wednesday that the village will continue its sale of weather alerting radios 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the police station March 2 at a discounted price of $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The man convicted of five murders and suspected in at least five others in Will County returned Wednesday to the courthouse in Joliet.

Though Milton Johnson’s sentence was commuted to life in prison when the state abolished the death penalty, he is still entitled to make post-conviction motions under the laws in place at the time. Johnson, now 65, claims his trial attorney in one case was incompetent and should have filed to suppress his arrest.

Appellate defender John Greenlees said no additional witnesses will be called on Johnson’s behalf and the hearing could end at the next court appearance in April if prosecutors have no rebuttal witnesses.

In March 1983, Johnson was paroled after serving half of a 25-year sentence for raping a woman in 1970 in Pilcher Park.

On July 17, 1983, he killed Anthony Hackett, 18, who had been sleeping in his car on Interstate 55 near Wilmington, and raped Hackett’s fiancee, leaving her for dead.

On Aug. 20, 1983, Johnson fa-

tally stabbed Marilyn Baers, 45, Barbara Dunbar, 38, Pamela Ryan, 29, and Agnes Ryan, 75, inside a ceramics shop on Cass Street in Joliet.

Prosecutors have said there also is “overwhelming evidence” Johnson killed five people – George Kiehl, 24; Cathleen Norwood, 25; Richard Paulin, 32; and Will County sheriff’s auxiliary deputies Denis Foley, 50, and Steven Mayer, 22 – off 147th Street in Homer Township the night before Hackett was murdered.

Because he was sentenced to death for the other murders, then-Will County State’s At-

torney Ed Petka decided not to prosecute those cases unless his convictions were overturned on appeal.

In other court news

• An Elwood man who was convicted of killing an 18-month-old girl will receive a new sentencing hearing. The law requiring Lee K. Ponshe, 32, be sentenced to life in prison because of the victim’s age was recently declared unconstitutional. In April 2009, Ponshe beat Halli R. Burton after the toddler woke up crying, prosecutors said. Halli’s mother had met Ponshe online and they’d

moved into his home days before the girl’s death. Ponshe now faces 20 to 60 years in prison.

• Blaique P. Morgan, 19, and Amari Morgan, 17, were indicted on murder charges Wednesday and their bonds were reduced from $2.5 million to $1.5 million. The Morgan brothers were arrested after the Jan. 7 slaying of Robert J. Bielec, 62, their next-door neighbor, in the 1700 block of Houston Avenue in Joliet Township. Police said the teens and Bielec were involved in an ongoing argument when he was struck with a pipe or crowbar.

Sentencing delayed for Aurora man who plotted Joliet terror attack CHICAGO – Sentencing has been delayed for a west suburban man who prosecutors say plotted with his cousin to carry out a terrorist attack at an Illinois National Guard base in Joliet.

Jonas Edmonds of Aurora was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday afternoon. But a late filing Tuesday moved the

hearing to March 14.

Edmonds has pleaded guilty in a plea agreement to conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State group and to making a false statement to law enforcement.

He faces a maximum 23-year prison term.

His cousin, Hasan Edmonds, also of Aurora, pleaded guilty to similar charges. He was supposed to be sentenced

separately. But his sentencing date has also been moved to March 14. So the two will now be sentenced together.

The filings gave no explanations for changing the dates.

Prosecutors say Hasan Edmonds devised a plan to travel to the Middle East and join Islamic State fighters overseas.

Joliet man charged with DUI after Wilmington-area train crash

bstanley@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – A Joliet man was arrested Tuesday after his unoccupied car was struck by a train.

At 7:16 p.m.

Tuesday, Will County sheriff’s deputies were called to Brant M. River Road a Jordan half-mile east of Interstate 55 where a BNSF train had struck a red Volkswagen and pushed it into a field, sheriff’s spokeswoman

Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Brant M. Jordan, 27, and a 39-year-old woman said they’d been in the car but had gotten out before the collision, Hoffmeyer said. “[Jordan] stated he was traveling westbound on River Road when he observed a train that was far down the west side of the tracks and was stationary,” Hoffmeyer said.

When Jordan reached the tracks, the barricade was down.

“After waiting for 15 minutes he made the decision to attempt to make a U-turn,” she said. “While doing this he

went around the gate onto the tracks when his front tire got stuck on the tracks and he was unable to push it to safety.”

When the passenger got out, she saw another train approaching from the north at a “high rate of speed,” Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies performed field sobriety tests and Jordan, of the 1500 block of Hosmer Street, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, violating a railroad crossing and improper lane use.

Wanted Rockdale man arrested in Joliet woman’s 2015 fatal overdose

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A Rockdale man was arrested early Wednesday in connection with the fatal overdose of a Joliet woman last year.

Shawn A. Eikey, 21, was located at a res- Shawn A. idence in Joliet Eikey Township by Will County sheriff’s police, who’d been seeking him since Dec. 30, spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

On Aug. 25, Eikey allegedly sold hydromorphone, a prescription painkiller, to Daniel Howe at a basement apartment in the 100 block of Schorie Avenue that Howe shared with his girlfriend, Emily C. Buckley, 22.

Hoffmeyer said Howe, Buckley and another friend used the drugs and stayed up partying, but when Howe and the friend woke up about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 26, they found Buckley had stopped breathing.

Toxicology results showed her death was a result of the drugs and Eikey was questioned Nov. 3 about the sale,

when he was arrested by the Will County Cooperative Police Assistance Team on another narcotics case, Hoffmeyer said.

After 46 days in jail, Eikey pleaded guilty to one count of drug possession and was sentenced to four years of probation, according to court records.

On Dec. 30, Eikey was indicted on charges of drug-induced homicide and delivery of drugs, but the indictment was kept under seal until Jan. 21, according to court records.

Eikey is being held in the Will County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Natural gas agreement is 32 percent decrease

Because the cost of natural gas is low right now, the village of Minooka was able to secure a contract with IGS Energy at a 32 percent a therm decrease for the next three years.

Minooka trustees unanimously approved the agreement for the supply of gas for municipality use with IGS through January 2019.

The village spends between $17,000 and $19,000 annually on natural gas, Finance Director John Harrington said.

“We are not a big [natural] gas user, but it’s a big savings amount in therms,” Harrington said.

Taxes abated on GO bonds

Trustees also unanimously approved abatement of taxes on four series of general obligation bonds issued to the village between 2008 and 2015, totaling $13.26 million.

The debt service of $1.24 million on the bond issues will be paid through alternate revenue sources such as utility taxes, Harrington said.

The abated taxes will not affect the $2.45 million levy approved by the Village Board

New Lenox looks to add vaping to no-smoke law

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – New Lenox is set to approve extending its Smoke Free New Lenox ordinance to e-cigarettes and similar products.

The Village Board on Monday discussed a set of three ordinances that would include alternative smoking devices containing nicotine, such as e-cigarettes, on the list of products banned from use in public spaces.

The amended language on the Smoke Free New Lenox ordinance includes: “Further, Smoke or Smoking means the use of any alternative nicotine product or vapor product, as defined in this section.”

An alternative nicotine product is defined as any product containing nicotine but no tobacco, and a vapor product is defined as any electronic device used to emit a vapor from nicotine, in a solution or other form, according to the ordinance.

The other two ordinances add illegal use as well as sale

of these products to minors to New Lenox’s punishable offenses and outline related fines and penalties.

Public health concerns, as with tobacco smoking, are the sole reason for bringing this action, Mayor Tim Baldermann said, citing concerns from the World Health Organization on the negative effects of nicotine.

“We are not arguing the science,” he said.

Baldermann said after the meeting that the village in the coming months is also moving toward making changes to zoning ordinances that would require new vaping businesses to be located only in industrial areas to ensure lack of access to minors.

The owners of two New Lenox vaping shops addressed the trustees and voiced some questions and concerns on how the new ordinance would affect their businesses.

Jason Kois, of Iron Clad Vapor, wanted to ensure his customers would still be allowed to test the variety of flavors he sold within the shop using a device setting that would emit no

nicotine.

Baldermann said as long as nicotine was not being emitted into the air, the shops would not be in violation of the law.

Jason Gaither, who co-owns Black Wolf Vapes with Justin Hoogeweg, told the board that many customers like to come and smoke their own devices in the shops, and that it would be difficult for the owners to regulate vaping within their shops.

Baldermann said the owners would have to enforce the law in their businesses.

Hoogeweg, in a later interview, said preventing customers from using their own devices in his store would “absolutely affect our business.”

Gaither said the owners plan to come back to the board when it votes on the measures with more information, adding that perhaps all the research on vaping is not getting to “the people making these decisions.”

“We want to make sure that vaping has a fair chance and that people have a chance to read the proper information,” he said.

After researching the number of liquor licenses approved through the village, staff found

two outstanding licenses not assigned to businesses.

MINOOKA – Plans for the long-awaited bike and walking path between Minooka’s Lions Park and the south side of the DuPage River in Channahon have taken another big step forward.

Minooka village trustees unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday authorizing acquisition of easement rights for property near McEvilly Road for the path to be used for construction and utilities.

The path will be constructed on the north side of McEvilly Road and not only will make getting between the two towns easier for bikers and walkers, but also will keep people off McEvilly Road and create

a safer mode of recreational travel.

The project is on schedule and bid letting will go out in late spring, said an enthusiastic Mayor Pat Brennan, who has for years pushed for the path.

“We are getting closer,” he said.

Kathleen retired in 2013 after 37 years as a nurse manager and staff nurse at St. Joseph Medical Center, where her compassionate, knowledgeable care of patients and professional management of nursing teams earned her many awards and recognitions. She was an avid reader and travel enthusiast throughout her life. She treasured time spent with family and dear friends.

Richard Joseph Hermes, age 82, of Wilmington passed away, Jan. 27, 2016, at Presence St. Mary’s Medical Center in Kankakee.

Born Aug. 5, 1933, in Joliet, Richard Joseph was a son of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Klover) Hermes. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dick honorably served during the Korean Conflict. On Nov. 27, 1954,

he married Marie Offerman at Saint John’s in Joliet, and together they raised their family in Wilmington. Dick worked for Caterpillar in Joliet, where he retired from after 33 years of service. He was a member of St. Rose Church in Wilmington, WIlmington VFW, Wilmington American Legion and the Knights of Columbus, Fr. George Kuzma Council. In his spare time, Dick enjoyed playing cards, fishing and traveling.

FRANK E. MARTENSEN Frank E. Martensen, age 87, born into eternal life Monday, Jan. 25, 2016.

A 19-year resident of the Carillon community in Plainfield, formerly of Oak Lawn, Frank retired in 1994 from Landis Plastics of Chicago Ridge after more than 30 years of service. A strong man of faith and a devoted member of the R.C.I.A., Frank was a very active member of the St. Andrew Catholic Community, Eucharistic Minister and Ministry of Care delivering communion to the sick. He enjoyed his work with the Senior Citizens Club and also loved to travel. Frank was a veteran of the Korean War serving U.S. Army.

He is survived by his loving children, Mary Ann (Donald) Huenecke, Patty (Joel Kaphengst) Martensen and Paul (Bernadette) Martensen; grandchildren, Sara (Jeff) Kirkpatrick, Benjamin (Raija) Huenecke, Morgan and Matthew Martensen.

Character actor Abe Vigoda dead at 94

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Character actor Abe Vigoda, whose leathery, sad-eyed face made him ideal for playing the overthe-hill detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series “Barney Miller” and the doomed Mafia soldier in “The Godfather,” died Tuesday at age 94.

Vigoda’s daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, told The Associated Press that Vigoda died Tuesday morning in his sleep at Fuchs’ home in Woodland Park, New Jersey. The cause of death was old age. “This man was never sick,” Fuchs said.

His death brought to an end years of questions on whether he was still alive – sparked by a false report of his death more than three decades ago. Though Vigoda took it in stride, the question of whether he was dead or alive became something of a running joke: There was even

a website devoted to answering the much-Googled question, “Is Abe Vigoda dead?”

(On Tuesday, it had been updated with “Yes,” with the date of his death.)

Vigoda worked in relative obscurity as a supporting actor in the New York theater and in TV until Francis Ford Coppola cast him in the 1972 “The Godfather.”

Vigoda played Sal Tessio, an old friend of Vito Corleone’s (Marlon Brando) who hopes to take over the family after Vito’s death by killing his son Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). But Michael anticipates that Sal’s suggestion for a “peace summit” among crime families is a setup and the escorts Sal thought were taking him to the meeting turn out to be his executioners.

Marvin Minsky, pioneer of artificial intelligence, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Marvin Minsky, a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who saw parallels in the functioning of the human brain and computers, died Sunday at age 88.

The university said Minsky died Sunday at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage.

Minsky viewed the brain as a machine whose functioning can be studied and replicated in a computer, and he considered how machines might be endowed with common sense.

Daniela Rus, director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, said Minsky “helped create the vision of artificial intelligence as we know it today.”

Minsky joined MIT’s faculty in 1958, after earning degrees from Harvard and Princeton universities. It was at Princeton that Minsky met colleague John McCarthy, and in 1959 the pair founded the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Project, now known as MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. McCarthy is credited with coining the term “artificial intelligence.”

The New York Times reports the lab brought about the notion that digital information should be shared freely and was part of the original ARPAnet, the precursor to the Internet.

Minsky’s other accomplishments include inventing and building the first ultrahigh-resolution confocal microscope, an instrument used in the biological sciences. In 1969, he was awarded the prestigious Turing Award, computer science’s highest prize.

Fox Lake police widow indicted in money laundering probe

A grand jury has indicted Melodie Gliniewicz, widow of disgraced Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, for a role investigators say she played laundering money and using charitable funds for personal benefit, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Melodie Gliniewicz, 51, was found to be involved in the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post with her husband, whose involvement was tainted after the investigation into his Sept. 1 death found inconsistencies in financial documents, officials said.

The Lake County Grand Jury indicted her after hearing testimony Wednesday.

She was indicted on three counts of disbursing charitable funds without authority and for personal benefit, Class 2 felonies; one count of disbursing charitable funds without authority and for personal benefit, a Class 3 felony; one count of money laundering, a Class 2 felony; and one count of money laundering, a Class 3 felony, authorities said.

The most serious charges carry a potential prison term between three and seven years.

After the indictment, a Lake County judge issued an arrest warrant for Melodie Gliniewicz, setting bond at $50,000.

According to a statement from her attorneys at North Barrington-based Kelleher and Buckley LLC, Melodie Gliniewicz is a victim of her husband’s actions and “looks forward to her day in court to show the world her innocence.”

Illinois medical marijuana advocates push for expansion

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois medical marijuana advocates say they delivered 25,000 signatures to Gov. Bruce Rauner ahead of the State of the State address.

Medical Cannabis Outreach petitioned the Republican

governor Wednesday to expand the state’s medical marijuana program to include post-traumatic stress disorder, which affects many military veterans, and seven other conditions.

Iraq war veteran Jonathan Byrne, who has a traumatic brain injury, said he wants Rauner to give vets a choice to use marijuana instead of prescription drugs.

The state’s first medical marijuana dispensaries opened in November.

An expert panel has recommended adding eight medical conditions to the marijuana treatment list. The Illinois Department of Public Health is expected to rule on the recommendations by the beginning of February.

Western Illinois U. laying off 30 as it awaits state money

MACOMB – Western Illinois University is firing 30 faculty members as the school tries to cut costs while it waits for long-overdue state funding.

University trustees voted Monday to cut the faculty jobs to save up to $2 million.

University spokeswoman Alisha Looney said Wednesday that Western Illinois is notifying the affected assistant professors, instructors and others.

Looney said some actually will not lose jobs for months because of contract provisions.

Western Illinois and other state universities have been without money from the state government since July as part of the ongoing budget stalemate between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the General Assembly.

About $51 million, or roughly 21 percent, of Western Illinois’ most recent $245 million budget came from the state.

Prosecutor Ed Parkinson told jurors Wednesday the woman’s body will tell them she was murdered.

An initial autopsy on the 38-year-old’s body was inconclusive, but subsequent tests of the cremated remains and photographic evidence determined the mother of four died from suffocation.

In its statement, the defense questioned when she was last seen alive and said the truth rests in the hands of the children.

Coroner Jim Keller testified Cory had been dead for a long time when her body was found.

However, he admitted under defense questioning he hadn’t put his observations in writing.

Panel asks Obama for added Asian carp control study

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Advocacy groups want President Barack Obama to support further study of long-term measures to prevent Asian carp and other invasive species from migrating between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds.

A 30-member panel representing governments, businesses and environmentalists has sought regionwide agreement on how to close aquatic pathways in the Chicago area linking the two giant water systems without damaging shipping and recreation.

In a letter this week, the Chicago Area Waterway System Advisory Committee asked Obama for a study of “control points” such as specially designed locks that would let boats to move back and forth while stopping fish, mussels and other live organisms from doing likewise.

The study would be conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which would make recommendations to Congress and other officials.

WASHINGTON – The Federal Reserve sounded a note of concern Wednesday about how global pressures could affect a slowing U.S. economy, but kept a key interest rate unchanged.

Six weeks after it raised rates from record lows, the Fed took stock of a more perilous international picture that could alter its plans for further raising rates.

Fed officials issued a statement after their latest policy meeting that suggested they might reduce the pace of future rate hikes if market losses and global weakness persist.

But stock investors were disappointed the Fed did not commit outright to delaying its pace of rate increases. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down about 223 points, or 1.4 percent.

Lawyer: ‘Runaway grand jury’ indicted abortion foes HOUSTON – Two anti-abortion activists facing charges after making undercover videos about Planned Parenthood did use fake driver’s licenses to get into a Texas clinic, their attorneys said Wednesday, but their actions weren’t meant to defraud or harm the abortion provider.

Attorney Terry Yates said at a news conference that the case against anti-abortion activists David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt won’t stand up in court.

Study eyes schizophrenia source, may aid treatment

NEW YORK – Scientists pursuing the biological roots of schizophrenia have zeroed in on a potential factor – a normal brain process that gets kicked into overdrive. The finding someday could lead to ways to treat the disease or even prevent it.

The result – accomplished by analysis of genetics, autopsy brain tissue and laboratory mice – is “going to be a game-changer” in terms of understanding schizophrenia and offering routes for treatment and potential for prevention, said Bruce Cuthbert, acting deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health, which helped fund the research.

Almost 1 percent of the general population will have schizophrenia at some point in their lives.

Gov. Snyder pledges help to Flint amid mistrust of gov’t

FLINT, Mich. – Flint residents coping with lead contamination will be cleared to drink unfiltered water again only when outside experts determine it is safe, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said Wednesday, acknowledging their mistrust of government officials while saying a full replacement of the city’s pipes is not imminent.

A lawsuit filed earlier in the day by environmental and civil-rights groups asked a federal judge to order the prompt replacement of all lead pipes in Flint’s water system at no cost to customers. Snyder did not rule out the eventual replacement of the lead service lines leading from water mains, but he said it is a longer-term consideration.

In the meantime, Flint hired a Virginia Tech professor who helped expose the lead problem despite initial skepticism from state regulators to now oversee water testing. Professor Marc Edwards also was appointed by Snyder to a committee that will set in place long-term solutions.

“There absolutely is a trust issue,” Snyder said during a news conference with state and local officials who announced more plans to address the crisis. The Legislature on Thursday is expected to direct $28 million in added funding toward Flint.

Mayor Karen Weaver said residents should not have to pay for the water “they did not and are not using.”

Emergency budget legislation approved Wednesday by a Senate committee includes $3 million to help Flint with unpaid water bills.

“I was glad that the governor said these are just first steps, because I’m asking for a staircase,” she said.

While under state financial management, the city switched its water source to the Flint River but without controlling corrosion. That caused lead to leech into the water for a year and a half, and it contributed to the spike in child lead exposure before state and officials fully acknowledged the problem in early October.

It remains unclear how badly the lead service lines were damaged by the river water. While Snyder’s administration has estimated it could cost up to $55 million to repair some 15,000 pipes, he cautioned that more study is needed.

“A lot of work is being done to even understand where the lead services lines fully are,” Snyder said. “The short-term issue is about recoating the pipes (with chemicals) and that will be based on third-party experts saying the water is safe. ... It’s a lot of work to take out pipes, to redo all the infrastructure.”

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Interim Director Keith Creagh said water samples show “things are trending better,” but he stressed the results are not statistically valid.

“Now we need to figure out ... is there a protective barrier” being recoated in the pipes by anti-corrosion chemicals, Creagh said. “Yes or no? ... We’re not going to guess.”

He said officials also are working to identify neighborhoods with no lead pipes, so those residents can get the allclear on their water.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday expresses doubt about whether the city can maintain optimal corrosion treatment when it switches to another new water source later this year. It seeks a ruling to force city and state officials to remedy alleged violations of the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act, including a failure to properly treat the water for corrosion, test it for lead, notify residents of results, and accurately report if the correct sample sites are being selected.

Marching for life in a blizzard of love WASHINGTON – As I write, the annual March for Life is about to happen on the National Mall, despite the massive snowstorm descending on the East Coast.

People from across the country are gathered around a table, hosted by the National Review Institute, to discuss the value of human life and the dangers to it. The conversations are intense and overflowing with gratitude. Gratitude for lessons learned and gifts received, for opportunities to help people in their most painful moments and throughout their lives. Despite the frequently painful circumstances being described, there is hope here.

Karen talks about her past so others might not repeat it, knowing the pain it has brought her family.

She talks about it, too, because of the choice she didn’t really fully have when she was young and scared, her mother driving her to the abortion appointment. Lizanne talks about her daughter with Down syndrome because her daughter is her gift of joy and she doesn’t want scared parents to be deprived of a similar gift.

Earlier in the day, former Cosmopolitan magazine writer Sue Ellen Browder talked about the freedom that comes in disassociating oneself from abortion advocacy and the cultural warfare that accompanies it. The hashtag on Twitter for those marching in protest of the Supreme Court’s legalization of abortion is “#WhyWeMarch.” Browder marches against a dehumanizing relativism, a cultural indifference that devalues the wondrous possibility and endless miracle of life.

Abby Johnson is sitting across from me. If you’re looking for something radical in the world, she’s it.

Johnson is a former Planned Parenthood clinic director who now runs a ministry dedicated to helping people leave the abortion industry.

A few months back, when shocking undercover videos involving Planned Parenthood and fetal tissue harvesting were being released, I asked Johnson what she thought people might need to hear. “I want

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez women and men to know that there is healing from aborting your own child or participating in the abortion industry. We aren’t meant to suffer in silence or suffer alone. We are meant to voice our burdens to others so that they can accompany us on our healing journey.”

She continued: “In this country, we are currently seeing a lot of outrage regarding abortion and the abortion industry. And that’s fine.

But we need to remember that there are real people inside those clinics who are worthy of healing and redemption ... they deserve a new and better life than the one they are currently living. We don’t need rage in this movement. We need action that is bathed in compassion and mercy ... that is what brings about true conversion. We don’t need anger. There is enough anger and hurt inside those abortion clinic walls.

Ours needs to be the voice of hope.”

Her hope extends to those who work in abortion clinics. She doesn’t demonize them. She will not dehumanize anyone. She knows that people who work in abortion clinics often are parents. They need to make a living and put food on the table. She doesn’t agree with their cause, but she once was in their shoes. She’s happy to help them if they want to get out of this ugly business. And she wants them to know that pro-life love extends to them.

In the midst of pain and suffering, there is light and hope. One speaker at the conference described the annual March for Life and the pro-life movement itself as an “army of love.” May it ever be so, and may that love spread throughout a fallen world.

Let public assess wisdom of using red-light cameras

For years now, we’ve been warning about the immorality of red-light camera profits that have tempted officials in many suburban municipalities.

We’re open to the idea that technology can be used to enforce the law and make us all safer.

If, for example, authorities determine through unambiguous data that driving beyond a certain speed on a specific stretch of road is unacceptably dangerous, then government has a responsibility to set the speed limit at that number and enforce it – and we’ve never opposed technological advances that have helped law enforcement do so more effectively.

The same holds true for red-light cameras. If they can be used to stop people from running red lights and endangering the lives of themselves and others, they could be a legitimate tool.

But whether they are effective at doing so is a considerable question.

There’s no doubt that officials in many of the municipalities that have installed red-light cameras were motivated by the windfall of traffic citation revenue they promised.

But we also recognize that many officials have leaned toward the technol-

ogy because they genuinely believe it can make our intersections and roads safer.

Yes, at some locations, the cameras may have helped increase traffic safety. But as counterintuitive as it may sound, in many locations, it appears that they have not.

We agree with the conclusion drawn by Beth Mosher, director of public affairs for Chicago AAA. She said municipal officials ought to “be judicious and know why crashes are happening.”

Beyond that, given the lack of credibility that red-light cameras have with the public at large, unbiased statistics on the intersections where they’re located should be made widely available.

We believe the public deserves an online statewide database of crash statistics at red-light-camera intersections so people can assess the effectiveness of the cameras for themselves.

Officials in municipalities that use the devices should be required to provide consistent and regularly updated information on the crashes that occur and the details that are relevant to understanding them.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

USF gets plenty of contributions from bench in 20th victory

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When one of the top teams in the nation goes up against a first-year program, you expect to see a lot of different faces on the court for the highly ranked squad.

And that’s just what happened Wednesday when the No. 5 University of St. Francis women’s basketball team played host to winless Governors State University.

USF coach Samantha Quigley rewarded many role players with significant playing time, and they helped lead

their team to a 63-44 victory at Quigley Court in the Sullivan Center.

“Our bench and players who maybe don’t get as much time as they want were the ones who came to play today,” Quigley said. “And that’s huge, because they’re working their butts off in practice every day, and that’s putting us in good positions to get ready for teams. When their number is called, they’re going to be ready, and that’s so important.

“We talk so often about them being a spark off of the bench and that every time they step out on the court that

they’re doing something to help us. They bring energy for us, and if our starters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do, these girls come ready to play. When you’re looking for energy, defensive stops and clutch baskets, we get that from them.”

Senior Alexis Brown got her first start of the season and wound up with a team-high 10 points in addition to four assists and five steals.

“I feel like the goal of the second-string is to kind of keep the same pace and be just as competitive as the starters,” Brown said. “We always give

the same amount of effort every night, no matter how many minutes we play or don’t play.

I’ve been here for four years, and this is the closest group that we have, and I think that’s the main reason for our success.”

Cody Brand, Ivana Markovic, Renee Martin, Mary Rouse and Trish Stritzel each came off of the bench to play 15 or more minutes. Markovic added nine points, Stritzel chipped in with seven points, and Brand had six points for USF. “It’s a lot of fun to be on this team with all of these good

players,” Brand said. “Every day at practice, we battle each other and try to make one another better in any way possible. I like how we all have a lot of talent, and even though there are things that we have to work on, we’re getting better every day. It’s an interesting group, and it’s fun playing with each other.”

Overall, 11 of the 12 Saints who played were able to score points. That type of depth helps to explain why USF notched its 20th win in 23 games. It’s only the sixth time in 40 years that

Strong second half powers Reed-Custer victory SUBMITTED REPORTS COAL CITY – When Travis Schoonover picked up his third foul in the first half and had to sit down, the Reed-Custer boys basketball team went into an uncharacteristic tentative mode.

In the second half of the semifinal game at the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament, however, the Comets were back to normal.

Brent Headrick scored 20 points, Schoonover added 19 in only 16 minutes and A.J. Simonell chipped in 18 Tuesday night as Reed-Custer scored a 72-57 victory over Plano to advance into Friday night’s title game against Sandwich.

“We got tentative in the first half when Travis picked up his third foul,” Comets coach Mark Porter said. “After that, we seemed to just want to survive. That’s not how we play basketball here. We don’t just survive, we attack. We did a

much better job in the second half of attacking.

“We challenged our bigs at the half, and I thought A.J. [Simonelli] really responded with baskets inside.”

Simonelli made all seven of his field-goal attempts. Headrick hit 7 of 13 shots, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range, and had nine rebounds and five assists.

Neil O’Donnell had five assists and five steals, and Schoonover contributed three steals.

“We had six new girls come in this season, so we were a little worried about depth,” Martin said.

“But the first time that we met each other, we all just fit together well. We like each other and want to get better in practice. Coach always talks about competing for minutes, so we push each other. We want to make the starters better, and they also make us better.”

Among the USF starters, Kamari Jordan and Angelica Osusky both scored eight points, while Charnelle Reed added six points. For GSU, Raven Phillips led all scorers with 14 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds. Zaporia Smith added nine points and 10 boards, while local products Kanitral Averhart and Andreana Johnson scored eight points.

Markovic, one of five freshmen on the squad, said she is thrilled to get the chance to play on a special team like this and hopes that she and her teammates can keep things going.

“It’s exciting to come here from a little high school, since I didn’t know what to expect,” Markovic said. “But we mesh together well and feed off of each other. We have good chemistry since we’re like sisters. Coach talks about being a spark and bringing energy, especially if you don’t start.

Kelliher averaged 23.5 points, six rebounds and three blocks over the course of two GLVC victories last week.

In those two games, she also combined for a 74.1 percent (20-of-27) shooting clip and was 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the foul line.

Joliet West at Joliet Central the headliner

It usually happens near the end of January, a weekend on the boys high school basketball schedule where good matchups abound.

This is that time. The headline attraction for local fans, of course, is the Joliet West at Joliet Central game, scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Of course, for Joliet Catholic fans, they realize the Hilltoppers will not face any tougher or more attractive opponent during the regular season than Notre Dame, which will visit at 7 p.m.

Friday.

Incidentally, apologies for reporting a couple of days ago that the Notre Dame-JCA game would be Saturday.

That’s when it originally was scheduled, but it was switched along the way to Friday.

Another huge matchup could be termed the Battle of New Lenox, as Lincoln-Way Central will visit Lincoln-Way West at 6:30 p.m.

Both teams are good. Both are ranked in The Herald-News’ weekly rankings.

And, if you are a follower of the Southwest Prairie Conference, Minooka at Plainfield East and Plainfield South at

VIEWS Dick Goss Plainfield North both have the potential to be good ones.

As for that Joliet West at Joliet Central battle, it should draw a big crowd. The suggestion is to get there early, get a decent parking place and begin your evening watching the sophomore game that begins at 5 p.m.

Following Central’s 47-38 victory Tuesday night over Plainfield South, Steelmen senior guard Taquan Sims said he was eager for Friday night’s game.

“I’m looking forward to playing our rivals,” he said.

“It will be an interesting game.

“The last time they came here, last season, I was out and we beat ’em bad. We’ve been winning lately, and they had that stretch where they lost some games [five of six, before winning the last two].

Maybe we can take advantage of that.”

Jones was 7 of 11 from the field and 9 of 11 from the free-throw line for the Bulldogs (14-6, 3-5 Big East), who made 25 of 29 free throws to 6 of 13 for the Blue Demons (7-13, 1-7). Kellen Dunham made three 3-point attempts and scored 16 points while Andrew Chrabascz added 10.

Tommy Hamilton had four 3-pointers and 13 points for DePaul. Eli Cain also scored 13 points, and Myke Henry added 12.

Henry had a 3-pointer and jumper to cut Butler’s lead to 56-47 with 5:35 left, but Jones

Seahawks’ Wilson picked 1st in Pro Bowl Draft

WAHIAWA, Hawaii – Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was selected Wednesday as the first Pro Bowl Draft pick.

Wilson was chosen by Michael Irvin, serving as a Pro Bowl legend captain opposite fellow Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for Sunday’s game. Rice took New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning with his first pick.

“It’s always a great rivalry game,” he said. “But the bottom line is, we have to be prepared for what we are going to see. We can’t have a slow start like we had tonight. We have to play 32 minutes.”

Joliet West features one of the area’s best wing players in Trevian Bell, an excellent guard in Teyvion Kirk and any one of about eight other players who could be the hero on a given night.

However, Central also goes 10 deep, and on a given night, who knows who might step

up?

You get a feeling the name players will make their contributions, but there is someone lurking out there – perhaps not a starter – who will make the difference.

Meanwhile, at JCA (14-3), the Hilltoppers will be looking to take that next step and knock off one of the East Suburban Catholic’s true heavyweights. Notre Dame certainly qualifies as that. If JCA plays well defensively and gets some offensive contributions from every position on the floor, the Hilltoppers can make it interesting.

As well as Minooka (16-7) has been playing, Plainfield East (9-10) also is on the rise.

And Plainfield South (7-14) could give Plainfield North (11-8) and area scoring leader Kevin Krieger a run as well.

Jacob Buchner, the Cougars’ leader, got a rare off shooting game out of his system at Joliet Central and may be ready to turn the tables.

In the Battle of New Lenox, it will be interesting to see whether Lincoln-Way West’s physical guard, Marco Pettinato, can dictate terms to the Knights’ group of guards, led

Minooka freelance writer shares her experiences of ministering in Haiti

INOOKA – The wheels screeched as they hit the wet runway. I lifted the window shade and watched the snowflakes blow in a whimsical pattern.

This Chicago weather was a far cry from the 90-degree temperatures, high humidity and swarms of mosquitoes of the past week. Once again, I adjusted to my First World life after experiencing a Third World reality.

Stepping out in faith

In the summer of 2010, Don Shire of Don Shire Ministries came to our church, Minooka Bible Church, for a trumpet concert and to share his ministry of widows’ homes and orphanages in Haiti, India and Honduras.

I told my husband, Nate Selk, “I would love to go to any of More those places but Haiti – it’s so diseased and online scary.”

In the U.S., we often forget to rely on God. Christians in Haiti trust that the Lord will provide; they have hope.

Joliet Catholic announces Dec. Students of Month The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Joliet Catholic Academy has announced the December Students of the Month: Ryan O’Connell (Kiwanis Club), Meghan Harrison (Lions Club), Juan Diaz (Rotary Club) and Jack Geissler (Exchange Club).

Ryan O’Connell, the son of Michael and Jodi O’Connell, has been named the Kiwanis Club Student of the Month. O’Connell currently has a 3.11 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), O’Connell is a member of the National Honor Society, International Thespian Society Member and Tri-em Music Society.

He is a past Kairos leader.

In addition, O’Connell serves as the vice president of the JCA band, president of the drama club, and president of the Improv Comedy Club. He also has received the The- Ryan O’Connell ology Award. Upon graduation, O’Connell – who has been heavily involved in JCA Drama Productions, often as a lead actor – plans to attend film school in California.

Meghan Harrison, the daughter of John and Susan H a r r i s o n , h a s a Meghan Harrison 4.63 GPA on a 5.0 scale and has been named the Lions Club Student of the Month. She has been named to the honor roll every quarter during her high school career, and she is a member of the honors program, National Honor Society, an Illinois State Scholar and the Spanish National Honor Society.

Harrison is a member of the Leo Club, varsity club and student council, and is a student ambassador. Additionally, Harrison was the captain of the varsity volleyball program in 2015, and is a member of the varsity softball program.

In volleyball, Harrison helped lead the Angels to the runner-up finish in Class 3A at this year’s IHSA Volleyball Finals. She was named First Team All-Area for volleyball in both the Daily Southtown and The Herald-News. Harrison plans to attend Loyola University in Chicago upon graduation, where she will study

nursing.

Juan Diaz, the son of Juan Diaz Sr., currently has a 3.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale and has been named the Rotary Club Student of the Month. Juan has been accepted into Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and the Kazma Scholars.

He also has received a medal in Theatre Arts, a certificate in Algebra I, a medal in Theology III, and honorable mention for the National Spanish Exam in Spanish II and IV. In addition to his academic distinctions, Diaz is a member of the Spanish club, the math team, JCA’s Art and Literary Magazine: “4188,” Movie Club, Victory View Media and the Respect Life Club. Juan also is the president of Mu Alpha Theta, the president of National Spanish Juan Diaz Honor Society, and the treasurer of the Spanish club.

Outside JCA, he volunteers his time in youth ministry and the cathedral teen choir.

He is employed at Our Lady of Angels as well as Diaz Remodeling and Painting. Diaz Jack Geissler plans to attend either the University of Chicago or the University of Minnesota, where he plans to study chemical engineering and biochemistry.

Jack Geissler, the son of Douglas and Lanette Geissler, has a 4.75 GPA on a 5.0 scale and has been named the Exchange Club Student of the Month.

Geissler is a member of the student council (where he serves as the treasurer), student ambassadors, National Honor Society, Spanish club, National Art Honor Society, math team, National Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

At the bridge table, if you successfully eliminate losers, your opponents will be depressed.

That applies in today’s deal. How did South make East-West sad after West led the heart two against five clubs doubled?

South had a so-so hand for a three-level weak jump overcall, but the vulnerability was in his favor.

West’s three-spade response showed the values for a single raise. (With game-invitational strength, he would have jumped to four spades; and with game-forcing power, he would have cue-bid four clubs.)

Then North adopted a bad tactic: If you are willing to go to five clubs, do it immediately; do not give the opponents extra bidding space. Also, after East showed his second suit, and West retreated to four spades, North ought to have doubled and probably gone plus 500.

If West had led the spade ace, five clubs doubled would have failed. But when he led a heart, South took full advantage. He won with dummy’s heart ace and continued with the heart queen.

East defended well by playing low, but South discarded a spade.

That scenario was repeated at trick three: heart jack not covered and spade pitched.

Then declarer correctly led dummy’s last heart, and even though East played his king, South threw his last spade. A moment later, declarer got into his hand with a spade ruff to take the club finesse and ended with plus 550.

Unfortunately, the opposite also is true: Some of the 200 women in whom cancer is discovered will die anyway, because the cancer already has spread by the time it is discovered. My colleagues estimate, of the 10,000 women who get annual mammograms, five will be saved from premature death caused by breast cancer. That’s the benefit of annual mammograms in women age 40-49.

Now let’s look at the risks in these 10,000 women receiving annual mammograms. In about 6,000, a suspicious spot will be seen on the mammogram.

That is, 6,000 women will live for some time with the fear they have cancer.

They will have a repeat mammogram.

About 1,000 of these repeat mammograms still will look suspicious.

This will lead to a biopsy, which is stressful and uncomfortable.

The biopsies will find about 100 women have a cancer that is at risk to spread. That is, 100 of the 6,000 women who were told they might have cancer will prove to have a cancer that is truly fearful.

Now, to your question, dear reader. The new ACS recommendations say a 47-year-old woman of average risk for breast cancer, and without a past mammogram, should get one.

I’m hopeful my description of the risks and benefits will help your decision.

yesterday’s column, I answered a question from a 47-year-old woman who had never had a mammogram and wondered if she should have one. She had heard one group of experts – the American Cancer Society (ACS) – had recently changed its recommendations on this issue.

The reader’s question raises a broader issue: What are the benefits of regular mammograms and what are the risks for a woman like her? A screening test, such as a mammogram, looks for early signs of a disease.

It aims to catch the disease in a curable stage.

That’s the benefit.

But not everyone has the same benefit. A woman is more likely to benefit from a screening test if her risk of developing the disease is higher.

For example, a woman whose mother or sister has had breast cancer is at higher risk for getting breast cancer herself.

Such women often begin mammograms before age 40. The new guidelines we talked about in yesterday’s and today’s columns apply only to women at average risk.

Another important factor that affects a woman’s risk of breast cancer is her age. Breast cancer is fairly unusual in women age 40-49, but becomes more common after age 50. So the benefits of mammograms are less in women age 40-49 than in women age 50-59.

How great are the benefits in women age 40-49, like our reader who asked the question?

My Harvard Medical School colleagues Drs. Nancy Keating and Lydia Pace estimate if 10,000 women turning 40 were screened each year for 10 years, about 200 cases of breast cancer would be discovered.

However, in about 100 of those 200 women, the cancer would be so slow-growing it would
