Pets involved in attacks against other dogs

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet owner of three dogs neighbors say were involved in several dogon-dog attacks will lose one of them to a McHenry County animal rescue shelter, but can keep the other two.

Jaclyn Vavrik, 29, of Joliet agreed during a city hearing Tuesday to relinquish ownership of her rottweiler Titan to Saving All Our Angles Animal Rescue in McHenry County.

Titan was deemed vicious by city officials after it was allegedly involved – with two other dogs owned by Vavrik – in three separate incidents of attacking neighbors’ dogs on North Reed Street last year.

Vavrik said during a Jan. 15 hearing the dog was given to a friend, who gave it to someone else out-of-state. But Joliet Township Animal Control found Titan and Vavrik identified the dog last week.

Donna Salemi, who works for Saving All Our Angels, said while she knows Titan had issues with other dogs in the past, she said the behavior problems could be fixed.

“With him being so young, it is my opinion that this is very easily corrected,” Salemi said. “He may not have had the correct training to prevent the situation. He is eager to learn.”

City officials gave Vavrik a seven-day deadline to comply with city ordinances for

Titan and her other dog, a pit bull named Duchess, who also was deemed vicious.

Duchess is staying with Vavrik after she complied with requirements for the dog, such as spaying and microchipping. Duchess also is tethered and muzzled, said Becky Gomez, Joliet Township Animal Control officer.

City workers are set to inspect the fencing for Duchess in April.

Some neighbors, whose dogs were attacked by Vavrik’s, were concerned two of her dogs – one deemed vicious and another dangerous – would remain in the neighborhood.

Joliet City Council committee discusses LGBT issues – a first

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A bit of history may have been made Tuesday when the Joliet City Council Diversity Committee met to discuss LGBT issues.

Just what they will do next is uncertain but getting together to talk mattered, said Gini Lester, president of Community Alliance & Action Network, a Joliet-based LGBT advocacy and support group.

“This is history,” Lester said after the meeting. “This is the first time that the city has said to the LGBT community, ‘Let’s talk.’ This is a huge step.”

The meeting was sparked by an article in The Herald-News in November about an annual report from The Human Rights Campaign, which for the first time included Joliet in a rating system on how well cities include the LGBT community in their laws and policies.

Joliet scored 63 out of 100,

which was six points below the state average but four points above the national average.

Diversity Committee Chairwoman Jan Quillman called the Tuesday meeting to discuss the rating after hearing there were a number of people who wanted to talk about LGBT issues with the city.

Only Lester and Melvin Whitehead, a faculty adviser to GLOW, the LGBT student group at Joliet Junior College, showed up.

“I was under the impression that there were going to be a whole lot of people at this meeting,” Quillman said.

She added that she would want more input from people before the city made any policy decisions. But Quillman called the meeting “an important first step.”

“At least the community will know we’re talking about it,” she said.

Councilman Larry Hug said the Tuesday meeting probably was the first time city officials

met to discuss LGBT issues.

“I think we need to engage and move forward,” Hug said.

No one, however, seemed to know exactly what to do next, although Lester said after the meeting that her group and GLOW now plan to organize a candidates forum for the upcoming city election in April.

Alfredo Melesio, director of neighborhood services for Joliet, discussed the city’s score in the rating. He said the city scored high in some areas, but missed points because the Human Rights Campaign never received a response from City Hall on its survey.

He said the city also lost points for not having a liaison with the LGBT community, a duty that could be assigned at City Hall.

For now, just having had the meeting seemed to matter most.

Whitehead told the committee, “I want to thank you so much for taking up this conversation.”

Doreen Swanson, who lives on North Reed Street and said one of her dogs was injured by those belonging to Vavrik, said the story she heard about Titan’s behavior from Salemi was one of “Jekyll and Hyde,” because it was not what she and other neighbors witnessed.

She said Vavrik’s dogs have run at the mailman in the neighborhood.

“Now, hopefully, Titan is going to be able to make amends, but I think that should be on record,” she said.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Building a new courthouse in downtown Joliet would be more convenient and cost-effective than building elsewhere on a greenfield site, Will County officials said during a workshop Tuesday.

“We have a very, very high percentage of litigants who do not have vehicles and they get to the courthouse by train or by bus,” Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

Schoenstedt, several County Board members and other officials met Tuesday to discuss new courthouse design options at the Darien headquarters of Wight & Company, the architectural firm hired last year to develop preliminary design work.

Conversations surrounding a new courthouse picked up over the last year, due to the county’s growing population, coupled with a lack of sufficient space and security in the existing judicial facility, built in 1969.

County officials Tuesday focused largely on the pros and cons of location, while some Republican board members harped on Joliet officials, who were not present, for not offering the county incentives to remain downtown.

Joliet City Manager Jim Hock did not immediately return phone calls made Tuesday afternoon seeking comment.

Officials Tuesday seemed to favor the first option presented, which called for an 11-story downtown judicial complex at the First Midwest Bank site at Ottawa and Jefferson streets that the county bought last year. The Will County

State’s Attorney Office would be housed in the nearby county-owned EmCo building at 57 N. Ottawa St., and the existing courthouse would be vacated.

The first option could cost between $232 million and $257 million, which includes renovations to the EmCo building and site improvements, according to preliminary cost projections.

The second option outlined an eight-story judicial complex building on an undetermined greenfield site, along with construction of a second agency office building and surface parking. In previous discussions, some County Board members suggested the county could save money in construction costs by building on a green site.

But on Tuesday, the costs of such a move were put into perspective when Jason Dwyer, vice president for Dwight & Company, compared estimated construction costs side-byside.

“We had discussions with all of the users about what this would mean, and we felt that, based on the operations of the system, you can’t just say ‘Let’s move the courtrooms’ out to wherever,” Dwyer said.

“You have to move the other functions with it. The state’s attorney’s got to go. The court [administration] has to go.

Otherwise, you’d have such a fractured system.”

A greenfield option could cost anywhere between $256 million and $284 million because of the required land acquisition, site improvements, sewer and water, parking and the construction of a second agency office building, Dwyer said.

Both options included separate satellite court locations in northern and eastern Will County. A third, but unfavorable, option used the existing courthouse for office space and built a new judicial facility at the First Midwest Bank site.

Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley also pointed out the added costs of transporting inmates from the county jail to a greenfield site versus a downtown site. It’s the difference between a “few blocks” and possibly “15, 20 miles,” he said.

Schoenstedt said he’d also like to see the site built downtown.

“A green grass site would take longer to acquire land, do the engineering, streets, sewer, water. It’s going to take more time. And quite frankly, everybody, I’m out of time,” Schoenstedt said. “Whatever gets us to [a new courthouse] the quickest is what I’m in favor of.”

Local officials get nowhere with Caterpillar Governor’s office shows no sign of getting involved

JOLIET – No public effort to save local Caterpillar jobs is developing, and the governor’s office does not appear to be taking up the cause.

Caterpillar announced Jan. 15 it will decide in March whether to move 230 jobs out of its Joliet plant to Mexico.

The company said the decision would depend on internal factors, rather than outside considerations, such as local taxes.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said he has reached out to the company to see if there is anything local or state officials can do. The response was no.

Walsh said he spoke with a Caterpillar official, and, “he basically told me that this decision is not related to any tax issue, any local issue. It’s nothing to do with the business climate in Illinois. It’s nothing to do with the way state regulates business. He called it an inter-

nal cost issue.”

Walsh and other local officials had hoped Gov. Bruce Rauner might have some pull at Caterpillar. Company CEO Doug Oberhelman was on Rauner’s transition team and endorsed the new governor early in his campaign.

Walsh said he could imagine Rauner saying something to Oberhelman along the lines of, “Here I am a week in office, and here you are talking about moving 230 jobs out of Illinois and out of the country.”

He put a call in to the governor’s office on the matter, but has not heard back, Walsh said.

The Will County Center for Economic Development is depending on state legislators to make contact with the governor’s office, Chief Executive John Greuling said. Greuling said last week the CED did not know who to call yet in the governor’s office.

Grueling, too, thought Rauner’s relationship with Oberhelman might do some

good.

“I thought, ‘This guy is pretty close to the governor,’” said Greuling, who hopes Rauner will see the prospect of saving jobs in Joliet as “a win.”

But if Rauner is talking to Caterpillar about the potential loss of Joliet jobs, his office is not giving any hint of it.

Asked if Rauner would make an effort to keep the Joliet jobs in Illinois, Press Secretary Catherine Kelly would only issue a written statement saying, “Gov. Rauner is very concerned about the anti-business climate in Illinois. Jobs moving out of Illinois is a huge problem facing the state and one he is working to address.”

Caterpillar has not indicated the Illinois business climate is related to its plan.

Walsh said he believes the company is looking at Mexico because wages are lower and regulations are not as strict as Caterpillar might face in the United States.

Channahon District 17 hires new superintendent

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon School District 17 School Board on Monday unanimously approved hiring Nick Henkle as Channahon’s next superintendent, effective at the end of the school year.

Henkle, now superintendent at Rockdale School District 84, will replace the retiring Karin Evans. Henkle’s salary will be $132,500 the first year, with 5 percent increases the second and third years of his three-year contract.

“I’ve heard so many good things about this district over the years,” Henkle said, “and I’m thrilled to be joining the district and the community.”

Before becoming Rockdale’s superintendent, Henkle

was a principal in Atwood Heights School District 125. Before that, he was a science and language arts teacher at Rockdale Elementary School.

He grew up in Brookfield, and lives in Tinley Park with his wife, Annie, and their chilNick dren Daisy, 8, Henkle and Ivy, 6.

Rockdale, a PK-8 school, has 292 students enrolled, an average class size of 17 students and 21 teachers, according to its Illinois School Report Card. Channahon District 17 has four schools, a student enrollment of 1,283, an average class size of 24 students and 70 teachers.

Henkle said he appreciates

Channahon’s student-centered and collaborative approach.

“He had a lot of positive attributes, and we loved his positive attitude,” School Board President George McCoy said of Henkle. “I think he will spend his first year becoming acclimated to the district and will carry on what Dr. Evans has done so far.”

P.E. teacher and union leader Bill Stonich said teachers were part of the selection committees, and met and spoke with the final three superintendent candidates.

“He seems like a person who is going to be very collaborative,” Stonich said of Henkle. “His presentation was more of a ‘we’ conversation than an ‘I’ conversation, and I think that he will make a team effort with the teachers.”

Fees eliminated

The Channahon School Board Monday also eliminated most student registration fees for the 2015-16 school year. The idea was brought up last year by Board Member Derek Breen, who said the district’s stable finances would allow it. The board this week agreed.

Next year, parents of in-district early childhood students will pay no fees; they paid $70 per student this year. Kindergarten through seventh-grade fees that were $135 will be zero next year. Eighth-grade fees will be reduced from $170 to $35, which will cover graduation ceremony expenses.

Band fees, which are $50, will be $15 next year. Lunch fees ($2.30), and interscholastic fees, ($15 a sport) will re-

main the same.

Interchange agreement

The School Board also unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with the village of Channahon that will use portions of the district’s property taxes for the next 15 years to cover expenses for improvements to the Interstate 55-Bluff Road interchange area.

Channahon Village Administrator Tom Durkin and Community Development Director Mike Petrick presented a summary of the proposal to the board and said the district brings in $809 in property taxes on the land. If developer Industrial Developments International builds as planned, that could increase to $84,007 once one building is fully assessed.

Romeoville man sentenced to 108 years for child porn, sexual assault Abused girl for nearly 10 years

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Romeoville man who filmed himself having sex with a 12-year-old girl was sentenced Tuesday to 108 years in prison.

Evidence presented to Judge David Carlson showed Timothy J. Brandt, 38, had molested the victim since she was 4 years old. Although no charges resulted when the girl was interviewed at the Will County Child Advocacy Center in 2004, Carlson was shown that video and another from an interview conducted in 2013.

“I watched that little girl in pigtails, drawing while she talks of horrific things for adults ... then watched her cry-

ing a decade later,” Carlson said. “The acts you committed don’t just violate the law, but the laws of humanity.”

Brandt was arrested in May 2013 after a two-month investigation by the Will County High Technology Crimes Unit, Timothy Romeoville J. Brandt police and the Secret Service when he posted videos and still photos on pornography websites that showed him molesting the girl.

In some videos, the victim was holding the camera, according to reports. Brandt also downloaded more than 5,000 images of child pornography.

At Brandt’s bench trial Oct. 14, Assistant Will County State’s Attorney John Connor and defense attorney Jeff Tomczak agreed the evidence would show Brandt was guilty of three counts of filming child pornography, one count of possessing child pornography and two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault.

Seven other pornography counts were dismissed.

“Everyone wants to grow up and be someone better. Unfortunately, I didn’t,” Brandt said before being sentenced.

“Do I need to be put out from part of the population? Sure.

For the rest of my life? ... I hope there’s mercy.”

Brandt, who faced between 34 and 165 years in prison, will not be eligible for parole for 66 years. If he is released, he must still register as a sexual predator for the rest of his life.

“It’s not for everybody,” cautioned Lisa Dorothy, Joliet’s project manager on the new transportation center under construction.

The “people mover” – a golf cart-like vehicle – will be available to move elderly people and those with disabilities along a 216-foot ramp, which is in place during construction, to the Amtrak train.

Dorothy noted the Amtrak temporary office is operated by one person who will not have time to continuously make shuttle runs up the ramp.

“She literally has to close the ticket office and go out,” Dorothy said. “It’s really for the people who truly need it.”

Dorothy said those planning to use the people mover should arrive at the station early enough to give the Amtrak staffer time to drive them to the train.

The people mover has been under discussion since the

city received complaints before Christmas about the temporary arrangement that sets up the long ramp between the ticket office and train.

The boarding platforms for Amtrak and Metra trains were moved to the other side of the tracks from Union Station in preparation for the future train station that will be built there.

The relocation has moved commuters away from the shelter of Union Station. Metra set up temporary shelters, which were located in the path of the people mover until

they were recently moved.

Early said he hasn’t heard anything about a potential strike.

“Nobody wants a strike,” he said. “Right now we’re

waiting on the availability of the federal mediator.”

Union Vice President Steve Camp agreed with Early, saying that teachers didn’t want to strike. But he said teachers have asked about it.

“We want to avoid disrupting the education of our children,” Camp said. “Teachers are thinking about it, but we’re still hoping to solve this with the board.”

One of the teachers’ main issues with the contract is addressing what they have deemed a hostile work environment that led to votes of no confidence in Early and Principal Kelly Whyte. Teachers have said the administration has fostered a work environment where teachers are afraid to speak out.

However, the school board has repeatedly stated its support for the administrators and said that workplace issues are perceived, and teachers haven’t given evidence illustrating them.

Early said the board is interested in getting a fair contract in the midst of declining property tax revenue and financial volatility in the state.

CREST HILL – A teachers union representative said Richland School District 88a teachers are getting frustrated by a lack of progress following submission of their latest contract offer to the School Board and another round of mediation on the horizon.

Negotiations between the two sides started in March 2014; the contract expired at the end of August 2014.

Contract negotiations with a federal mediator are set to start again for the first time since teachers turned down a contract offer after an Oct. 27 meeting, according to Dick Manley, president of American Federation of Teachers Local 604.

District Superintendent Michael Early said this would be the third or fourth time both sides are meeting with a mediator.

Early said teachers made an offer that the district received Jan. 9. The board discussed it in closed session at its Jan. 21 meeting. School Board President Julie Staras-

JTHS Foundation to hold trivia fundraiser

JOLIET – The Joliet Township High School Foundation will host its 10th annual Trivia Day at 2 p.m. March 8 at 176 West, 1100 NE Frontage Road in Joliet.

Teams of between six and 10 individuals are being sought for the 90-minute battle of wits, according to a news release from the foundation. The contest theme this year is “Let the Games Begin” and will involve 10 rounds with 10 questions in each round. Planning underway for Plainfield Irish Parade

PLAINFIELD – The Village Preservation Association’s 13th annual Hometown Irish Parade is scheduled to go marching down Lockport Street on March 15.

The procession will step off from the parking lot behind Plainfield High School Central Campus at 1 p.m., winding its way through the village core.

A full afternoon of fun follows the parade in and around the family tent, where there will be entertainment and a DJ, inflatable bouncers, face painting,

balloon sculpture and games for kids. Food will be available to buy, and the village’s downtown restaurants and pubs will be open for business, too, according to a news release from event organizers.

Entries are added to the lineup after registering and submitting the $50 fee ($75 for businesses). The entry deadline is March 10.

Andrew G. Vollmer, age 93, a lifelong resident of Joliet, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the home of his son, with his family at his side.

Born May 18, 1921 in Joliet, he was the son of Joseph Michael and Emilie (nee Zeman) Vollmer. He was a decorated United States Marine Corp veteran of World War II, whose service included the Battle of Iwo Jima. Andy retired from Caterpillar, Inc. where he worked over 20 years as a machinist, and was a proud member and past President of Local #851, Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union.

He was a life member of the U.S. Marine Corps League and a founding member of its Joliet Detachment. He was also a life member of Cantigny

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois public health officials said a suburban Chicago resident has a confirmed case of measles.

IDPH Director Nirav Shah said only 10 cases of measles have been reported in Illinois over the last five years. He says this case is a reminder of the importance of vaccinations. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease with a characteristic rash.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said it is working with the Cook County Department of Public Health to trace and contact all potential people who were exposed.

Officials said potential exposures may have occurred at: • Northwest Community Hospital’s emergency room in Arlington Heights on Jan. 14 and Jan. 17.

• Supermercade Guzman in Palatine on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13.

• Vista Clinic in Palatine on Jan. 16.

Most candidates for Chicago mayor support city casino

CHICAGO – Most candidates running for Chicago mayor said they’d support a city-owned casino.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the four candidates trying to unseat him participated in a Tuesday debate hosted by the Chicago Tribune editorial board.

It’s the first time all candidates are debating ahead of the Feb. 24 election.

Emanuel, Alderman Bob Fioretti, Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia and businessman Willie Wilson say a casino would boost revenues.

But Emanuel said it wouldn’t solve all of Chicago’s fiscal problems. Garcia said citizens should support if first.

Perennial candidate William “Dock” Walls objects to a casino.

State lawmakers’ attempts to increase casinos statewide have failed. Former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn twice vetoed plans.

Gov. Bruce Rauner said he won’t block new casinos.

‘Wicked storm’: New England hit by blizzard’s 2 feet of snow

By BOB SALSBERG and DENISE LAVOIE The Associated Press BOSTON – Its winds howling at more than 70 mph, the Blizzard of 2015 slammed Boston and surrounding parts of New England on Tuesday with none of the mercy it unexpectedly showed New York City, piling up more than 2 feet of snow.

The storm punched out a 40-to-50-foot section of a seawall in Marshfield, Massachusetts, badly damaging a vacant home. In Newport, Rhode Island, it toppled a 110foot replica of a Revolutionary War sailing vessel in dry dock, breaking its mast and puncturing its hull.

The blizzard’s force and relentlessness stunned even winter-hardened New Englanders.

“It’s a wicked storm,” Jeff Russell said as he fought a mounting snowdrift threatening to cover a window at his home in Scarborough, Maine.

The snow in New England began Monday evening and continued most of Tuesday. A

blizzard warning for Boston ended Tuesday evening as the snow tapered off, but one remained in effect for the south coast, Cape Cod and nearby islands.

The area also was dealing with bitter cold: The low in Boston on Wednesday was expected to be 10 degrees – with wind chill minus 5 – and forecasters said it will not get above freezing for the next week or so.

The Philadelphia-to-Boston corridor of more than 35 million people had braced for a paralyzing blast Monday evening and into Tuesday after forecasters warned of a storm of potentially historic proportions.

The weather lived up to its billing in New England and on New York’s Long Island, which also got clobbered.

But in the New York City area, the snowfall wasn’t all that bad, falling short of a foot.

By Tuesday morning, buses and subways were starting to run again, and driving bans there and in New Jersey had been lifted.

director Louis Uccellini said his agency should have done a better job of communicating the uncertainty in its forecast. But he also said the storm may, in fact, prove to be one of the biggest ever in some parts of Massachusetts.

“It feels like a hurricane with snow,” said Maureen Keller, who works at an oceanfront resort in Montauk.

At least 30,000 homes and businesses lost power in the Boston-Cape Cod area, including all of Nantucket.

A 78 mph wind gust was reported on Nantucket, and a 72 mph one on Martha’s Vineyard.

Dems put brakes on Iran sanctions

By DEB RIECHMANN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats on Tuesday put the brakes on new Iran sanctions legislation, ending for now a looming showdown between Congress and President Barack Obama over negotiations to prevent Tehran from having the capability to make a nuclear weapon.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., a leading proponent of the legislation, said he remains skeptical a deal will materialize but also said he and nine other Democrats now won’t push the bill at least until the end of March.

Menendez’s concession to the White House is good news for Obama, who has threatened to veto any new sanctions legislation. At the same time,

supporters of the bill said the letter signals the White House that Menendez and his Democratic colleagues do support the legislation and are willing to vote for new sanctions if Iran doesn’t reach an agreement with the U.S. and its international partners.

Republicans could still move ahead on the bill, but without Democratic support, Congress would not have the votes needed to override an Obama veto.

The White House, British Prime Minister David Cameron and other international leaders have been lobbying U.S. lawmakers hard, arguing that if new sanctions legislation were passed, Iran could walk away from the talks and say the U.S. was negotiating in bad faith. Obama said the willingness of America’s interna-

tional partners to enforce existing sanctions against Iran also would wane.

Last week, House Speaker John Boehner fueled the rising friction with the White House by announcing that he had invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a staunch opponent of Iran, to stand before Congress March 3 and push for new sanctions.

The announcement caught the administration off-guard and Obama says he will not be meeting with Netanyahu when he visits Washington.

Boehner defended his decision again on Tuesday, saying the House is an equal branch of government and had the right to invite the Israeli leader to “talk to the members of Congress about the serious threat that Iran poses and the serious threat of radical Islam.”

BRZEZINKA, Poland – A Jewish leader stood before 300 survivors of the Nazis’ most notorious death camp Tuesday and asked world leaders to prevent another Auschwitz, warning of a rise of anti-Semitism that has made many Jews fearful of walking the streets, and is causing many to flee Europe.

Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, made his bleak assessment on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Lauder spoke next to the gate and the railroad tracks that marked the last journey for more than a million people murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

He said his speech was shaped by the recent terrorist attacks in France that targeted Jews and newspaper satirists.

“For a time, we thought that the hatred of Jews had finally been eradicated. But slowly the demonization of Jews started to come back,” Lauder said.

Europe also saw a spasm of anti-Semitism last summer during the war in Gaza, with protests in Paris turning violent and other hostility across the continent.

One Holocaust survivor, Roman Kent, became emotional as he issued a plea to world leaders to remember the atrocities and fight for tolerance.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who was in Saudi Arabia to pay respects after the death of King Abdullah, issued a statement paying tribute to the 6 million Jews and millions of others murdered by the Nazis.

Transparency in personnel issues needed SPRINGFIELD – Sometimes, elected officials forget who’s the boss.

They think they are accountable only to themselves.

The reality is it’s the voters who put them in office and the taxpayers who pay the bills who are in charge.

At least, that is how things are supposed to work.

At the very least, we deserve to know how elected officials are spending our money.

All too often, elected officials are as transparent as a slab of concrete.

A good case in point is the College of DuPage.

Last week, that suburban community college board voted to give $762,000 to the college’s president, Robert Breuder, so he would resign.

That’s an awful lot of money to pay someone to do nothing.

More importantly, it’s our money.

And the board of that public institution is mum about why they want him to quit or, more importantly, why they think he deserves almost double annual salary of the president of the United States to do nothing.

That’s the height of arrogance. But its not a particularly uncommon situation for elected officials to be so secretive.

The biggest items in just about any governmental entities’ budget are salaries.

And yet, when school boards, city councils and other local governments vote on contracts for their unionized

Apparently, they don’t want to hear opinions of voters before they consider a measure.

How pathetic.

Shouldn’t the public know the particulars of the contract before the vote?

State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, thinks so.

During the last legislative session, she pushed hard for a measure to require local governments to publicly post the details of labor contacts well before a vote.

The measure died.

There is no telling what government transparency bills will be introduced this year.

Some of the bills may be good, others not so much.

But one thing is certain: More transparency is needed.

As former Gov. Jim Edgar used to say of government, “Sunshine is the best disinfectant.”

And elected officials should remember: The public needs to know.

Character counted for Mr. Cub Most people never will hit 512 home runs in the major leagues, as Ernie Banks did.

Most won’t be chosen the National League’s Most Valuable Player twice, as Ernie Banks was.

Most won’t play 19 years with the Chicago Cubs, be a perennial All-Star, be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first try and be known worldwide as “Mr. Cub,” as Ernie Banks.

But if they choose to, everyone can be like Ernie in one important way: character.

“Ernie Banks was a great player and an even better person,” Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement. “He was a kind, gentle man who loved his fans as much as they loved him.”

Humble. Loyal. Sunny personality. Optimistic.

Positive attitude.

Such nice-guy traits set Ernie Banks apart.

Those traits are what his fans remembered upon learning of his death Friday from a heart attack at age 83.

Banks played from 1953 until 1971. In fact, he broke the color barrier on the Cubs.

Tall and thin, but with surprising wrist strength, he set a National League record for home runs hit by a shortstop that still stands, before he switched to first base.

After retiring, Banks served as a coach and then an ambassador for the Cubs, doing public appearances and meeting fans.

Banks never made it to the postseason, let alone a World Series. Most Cubs teams he played on had losing records.

But losing never hardened his heart. In all the years he played, he never was ejected from a game for poor sportsmanship.

Today’s professional athletes can learn from Ernie’s example.

And so can Ernie’s fans.

“When you do things to try to help people and share things, it really comes back to you,” Banks said in 2013 when he learned he would receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

“I try to do that.”

Here’s the recipe: Combine warmth and sincerity with a positive attitude and a kind heart, mix in good humor and an infectious smile, and you, too, can be like Ernie.

Hey, hey! What a great tribute that would be.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – A couple weeks ago, the Minooka girls blitzed Plainfield Central off the get-go and breezed to a Southwest Prairie Conference victory.

On Tuesday night, the rematch was a different story.

Well, for a half, anyway.

After scoring the final five points of the second quarter to take a 16-14 halftime lead, Minooka scored 18 consecutive points in the third quarter to open a 34-14 lead and coasted to a 50-24 victory.

In a quirk of scheduling, the Indians (17-5, 8-2) will conclude the regular season with four SPC road games. This game was it for their home floor.

“It was a little bittersweet,” said 5-foot-10 senior Kelly Carnagio, a four-year varsity regular who led Minooka with 18 points. “It seems like I’ve been playing here forever.”

Plainfield Central (4-15, 0-8) starts three sophomores and two juniors, and the Wildcats’ young troops gave the Indians all they wanted in the first 16 minutes. Once the second half began, however, something flipped the switch for the Indians.

“We had a lot better ball movement in the second half, and we played with more confidence,” Carnagio said. “It was more our game, more the way we play.”

Minooka scored the 18 straight points to open the third quarter in less than five minutes.

Those points came while the Indians forced four turnovers and Central missed four shots. Included in the barrage were three traditional 3-point plays.

Alexis Pease, who scored 11 points, got the run started with a 3-pointer, one of her three on the night.

“Alexis is our best outside shooter,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “When she gets in a good rhythm, she can knock it down.”

Arlis, meanwhile, finished with 10 points and played strong defense against Central’s top scorer, Hennessey Handy, who finished with 13 points.

“Part of making a run like we had is not letting the other team score much,” Liberatore said. “Sydney [Arlis] did a nice job on Handy. She’s versatile. We’ll match her up against anyone in our conference.”

One of Minooka’s remaining SPC games is against league leader Oswego East, which also has a game left against Oswego, another team in the hunt.

“Oswego East is the toughest opponents we have left, but we’re ready for them,” Carnagio said. “We’ve got all road games, but we’ll hang in there. Everyone is pumped up. We’re know we’re good – we have to prove it.”

Central received balanced scoring with Jerry Gillespie and Kenyon Woodfork (five rebounds) leading the way with nine points each. Malik Fuller (six rebounds) added eight points and Kewon Ware (six rebounds) chipped in with six points.

Gillespie, who drew his second foul midway through the opening quarter, scored all of his points during the final half while Woodfork collected six of his points after the break.

Leading the way for South was Jacob Buchner (five rebounds), who scored 11 of his 15 points during the final quarter.

Shane Ritter got all 12 of his points after the break, with eight of those coming in the final period.

The Cougars also received five points from Michael Ortiz while Nick Welter had five rebounds.

“We were excited about holding them to six points at halftime but told the kids that they were going to make a run. They scored 23 points in the fourth quarter and got it down to single figures, and we can’t have that. “We turned the ball over too many times, tonight,” Higgins said.” I am playing with a lot of confidence right now. We have to win them all now if we are to repeat as conference champs.”

East was led by University of Illinois-bound senior Aaron Jordan, who scored 15 points. He had four steals, handed out three assists and grabbed four rebounds. Elyjah Goss had 13 points, including four dunks out of his 6-foot-7 frame, and hauled down nine rebounds. Cole Kotopka chipped in with eight points and had 10 rebounds.

JOLIET – On paper, Tuesday’s nonconference boys basketball game between Joliet Central and Plainfield South figured to be a close one.

But in reality, it took the better part of the contest for that to happen after the host Steelmen took advantage of a rough first half by the Cougars to grab a 17-6 lead at the break.

After falling behind by 18 points in the final period, South mounted a comeback and was able to close to within six points on two occasions before Central claimed a 47-39 victory.

“We were excited about holding them to six points at halftime but told the kids that they were going to make a run,” Steelmen coach Jeff Corcoran said.

“They scored 23 points in the fourth quarter and got it down to single figures, and we can’t have that. We don’t have the luxury of playing

that way, we have to have good possessions on offense and defense.

“We’re not playing as well as were going into Christmas, but the point is that these guys are finding a way to grind things out.

Jerry (Gillespie) has led us in points most games, but tonight he got in foul trouble and the guys kind of looked and said. ‘What are we going to do now?’ But to their credit, we did a lot of good things offensively.”

The Steelmen (10-7) took a 7-2 lead after one quarter and stretched their advantage to 17-6 at halftime after the Cougars (8-13) made good on three of 18 shot attempts.

Despite hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter, South trailed 28-16 with eight minutes left and then found itself behind 38-20 during the final period.

Junior Isaac Jean-Paul has been named the GLVC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season and second in as many weeks after winning the high jump with a NCAA-best leap of 2.16 meters (7 feet, 1 inch) and adding a runner-up finish of 6.87 meters (22 feet, 6½ inches) in the long jump at the NAIA vs. NCAA Challenge.

The Slammers announced Tuesday that one of their most popular players, shortstop Max Casper, will return for the 2015 season after re-signing this week.

This will be Casper’s third in the Frontier League and second with the Slammers.

He had a .257 batting average with a .346 on-base percentage in 94 games last year, and is considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the Frontier League. He also is known for his relationship with fans and his volunteer efforts in the community.

Casper hails from Circle Pines, Minnesota and graduated from North Dakota State University in 2012. He began his Frontier League career with the Lake Erie Crushers in 2013 and made the switch from second base to shortstop when he signed with the Slammers in 2014.

Senior Nate Vejvoda made his 2014-15 debut for the Celtics.

Vejvoda, the University of Iowa football recruit, entered the game at the 3:42 mark of the first quarter, received a pass from Miles Boykin and scored with an uncontested

layup. It was his only score of the night.

“It was nice to be back and I have to credit Miles with that pass,” Vejvoda said. “I couldn’t believe that I checked into the game and scored.

“My knee feels really good. I started practicing last Wednesday, but I felt a little lost out there. I have to get used to the chemistry with everyone. I’m here for defense and rebounding. We have the scorers. It’s a little different coming off of football and then having the long layoff, but I’ve played enough basketball

to know that it will be fine.”

The Celtics (11-8) trailed Nazareth, 15-12, at the end of the first quarter but then went to work.

PHOENIX – Rob Ninkovich has made the journey from high school football star to NFL journeyman, and after being cut three times and suffering a serious knee injury he has become one of the MVPs of the New England Patriots defense.

Ninkovich was born in Blue Island, and his family moved to New Lenox when he was in the seventh grade.

Krzyzewski fears post-1,000-win letdown

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After months of talk about how Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski would become the first NCAA Division I men’s coach with 1,000 victories and weeks of speculation on when and where it would happen, the focus now turns to win No. 1,001.

So after all that anticipation and excitement of reaching that milestone victory with a 77-68 win Sunday over St. John’s at Madison Square Garden, how do the fourthranked Blue Devils avoid a letdown playing Wednesday night at No. 8 Notre Dame?

“Well, we’re trying to figure that out,” Krzyzewski said. “I think our team this last month has gone through some things that no other team has gone through because of all this. It’s a different journey.”

The Blue Devils (17-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) also have a game looming Saturday at No. 2 Virginia. For the Irish (19-2, 7-1), the game against the Blue Devils is about as big as it gets.

The game will mark the first time in nearly 12 years that two top 10 teams have played at Purcell Pavilion.

The last time was Feb. 9, 2003, when the 10th-ranked Irish beat No. 4 Pittsburgh, 66-64. Before that, the last time two top 10 teams met at Notre Dame was when the ninth-ranked Irish defeated No. 7 Indiana, 68-64, on Dec. 9, 1980.

“I think our fans are going to be through the roof,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said.

A big reason for that has been the play of Jerian Grant, who missed the second half of last season because of an academic suspension. Grant is averaging 16.8 points and 6.1 assists a game.

Krzyzewski describes Grant as one of the best players in the country.

“He puts his fingerprints on everything that’s going on in the game,” Krzyzewski said.

“Grant makes all of their good players even better. He’s that force multiplier. If you have a great player, that’s what a great player does.”

Duke has a player like that in 6-11 freshman Jahlil Okafor, who is averaging 18.5 points and nine rebounds a

game, is shooting 67 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in 19 straight games. He’s also been good at

passing out of double teams.

“He wants to pass. He has made overall great decisions in handling that,” Krzyzewski said. “We’re better if passes out and we hit shots. In the games we’ve played well in, we’ve hit a good percentage of those shots.”

Notre Dame stunned No. 7 Duke with a 79-77 victory last season in the first ACC game for the Irish, ending an 11game losing streak to the Blue Devils. Brey said that win, along with this season’s win at North Carolina, have helped the Irish gain credibility in the ACC. “We’re trying to earn our stripes in the ACC,” he said.

“Those are things that make you feel like you belong in this league and you’re not a stepchild any more. You’re in for real.”

Patriots, Seahawks contribute local flavors in battle of dips

By ALISON LADMAN The Associated Press The Super Bowl isn’t just about the Patriots vs. the Seahawks. It’s also about teriyaki-spiced crabmeat and smoked mussels vs. baked beans, barbecue pulled pork and apples with bacon.

That’s because we decided the battle on the gridiron should continue on the buffet. So we created two versions of that classic party pleaser – seven-layer dip. Each is inspired by the home of one of the teams facing off in the big game, New England and Seattle.

For the New England Patriots, we have barbecued pulled pork topped with skillet sauteed apples and butter. Over that is a thick layer of cream cheese and baked beans, then a final layer of bacon and extra-sharp Vermont cheddar cheese. For the Seattle Seahawks, we start with teriyaki-seasoned Dungeness crabmeat, then add layers of creamy cheese, caramelized onions and smoked mussels, and finish with purple cabbage slaw and blackberry vinaigrette.

And truth is, they are both so indulgently delicious, it really won’t matter who you are rooting for in the game. You won’t be able to resisting cheering for both dips.

Seattle Super Seven Dip Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 16

8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 3 tablespoons milk ½ cup sour cream 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced 2 cups finely grated red cabbage 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives 3 tablespoons blackberry jam 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Kosher salt and ground black pepper Splash of hot sauce 16 ounces well-drained crab meat, preferably Dungeness ½ cup sauce 6 ounces smoked mussels, lightly chopped In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add the milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until smooth and fluffy. Stir in the sour cream, then set aside.

In a medium skillet over medium, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Add the onion and cook, stirring frequently, until well browned and caramelized, about 15 to 20 minutes. If the onion begins to stick, add a tablespoon of water and continue to cook. Set aside.

another bowl, whisk together the jam, vinegar, a pinch each of salt and pepper, the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and a splash of hot sauce.

To assemble the dip, spread the crab over the bottom of a large, shallow baking dish. Drizzle with the teriyaki sauce.

Spread the whipped cream cheese over the crab, spreading evenly to the edge of the bowl. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the cream cheese, then top with the chopped smoked mussels. If making ahead, wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

When ready to serve, heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 20 minutes, or until warmed through. Arrange the cabbage mixture over the top and drizzle with the blackberry vinaigrette.

New England Super Seven Dip Start to finish: 1 hours (30 minutes) Servings: 16

1 pound pork tenderloin, cut into 2-inch pieces 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth ¾ cup barbecue sauce 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 3 tablespoons milk ½ cup sour cream 2 tablespoons butter 2 medium apples, peeled, cored and diced

1 cup thawed corn kernels, well drained 3 thinly sliced scallions Splash of hot sauce 15-ounce can baked beans, partially drained 1½ cups shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese 2⁄3 cup crumbled crisp-cooked bacon In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the pork tenderloin with the broth. Bring to a simmer, then cover and cook until very tender, about 45 minutes. Discard the broth. Using 2 forks, shred the meat, then transfer to a medium bowl. Add the barbecue sauce and toss until coated While the pork cooks, prepare the other ingredients. In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add the milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until smooth and fluffy. Stir in the sour cream, then set aside.

Add the apples and cook until just tender. In a small bowl, stir together the corn kernels, scallions and hot sauce.

To assemble the dip, spread the corn mixture over the bottom of a large, shallow baking dish. Top with the pork, then with the apples. Spread the whipped cream cheese evenly over the apples, spreading to the edge.

fore leaving the hospital, and all received standard medical care, as you did.

Over the next six months, the patients did well. The patients who returned to work earlier did not have a greater number of heart problems -- repeat heart attacks, heart failure or deaths. So this one study suggests that people at low risk after a heart attack may be able to return to work sooner than six weeks.

While training in internal medicine, I cared for a patient with a heart attack. His cardiologist had ordered that he lie flat all the time, even to pass his urine or have a bowel movement. After five days, he told me this was driving him crazy.

He asked if he could just sit up and dangle his legs off the side of the bed, and I agreed. Nothing bad happened -- to him.

However, when the cardiologist found out, he hit the ceiling. To make matters worse, he was one of the most famous and accomplished cardiologists of the 20th century – and I was not. But on this matter, many studies since then have shown that he was wrong.

My take-home lessons from this experience: In the absence of evidence, the judgment of even the finest doctors can be wrong.

There is no substitute for actually studying what is the best way to treat a medical problem.

So ask your doctor if he would reconsider his advice about when to return to work.

Dear Doctor K: I am 59 years old. I recently came home after being hospitalized for five days for a mild heart attack. I feel great -- but my doctor says he doesn’t want me to go back to work for another six weeks, even though my job mostly involves sitting at my desk. I like to stay busy and feel ready to return to the office. Please advise.

Dear Reader: The treatment of heart attacks has come a long way in the past 30 years. Doctors can now open blocked coronary arteries with angioplasty balloons and stents or “clot-busting” drugs. We can use stress tests and echocardiograms to classify patients as low-, intermediate- or high-risk when they are discharged from the hospital. And patients go home with medications that reduce the likelihood of another heart attack.

With today’s treatments, people leave the hospital much sooner.

Only a couple of decades ago, the typical heart attack patient spent weeks in the hospital, much of it on strict bed rest.

In most hospitals today, patients who have a heart attack without additional complications are out of bed in a day.

They’re walking in a day or two, on a treadmill for a low-level stress test in four or five days -- and then home.

But, as in your case, many patients are advised to stay away from work for four to six weeks. That’s a big improvement from the eight- to 12-week prohibitions of the past. But is it really necessary?

To find out, doctors in Australia randomly assigned 142 patients to return to normal activities, including work, either two or six weeks after their heart attacks.

Dear Abby: My wife and I have been married for quite a while, and our intimate life became monotonous and unimaginative a long time ago.
