By THE HERALD–NEWS The below-zero temperatures expected this week caused dozens of local school districts to cancel classes for Monday and state police to issue a warning advising motorists to stay off the roads if they can.

By 6 p.m. Sunday, virtually every local public school district in Will and Grundy counties had announced its intention to be closed Monday, with some already deciding to be closed Tuesday, as well.

The moves were prompted by an unusual weather pattern driving bitterly cold air from the Arctic Circle south across a huge swath of the Midwest, which was expected to send temperatures plummeting Monday, the latest punch from a winter that is in some areas shaping up as one of the coldest on record.

Temperatures will remain in the grips of the deep freeze for 2½ days, said meteorologist Mike Hudson of the National Weather Service. It will be similar to what happened earlier this month when temperatures dropped quickly and stayed low for days when a piece of the polar vortex – winds that circulate around the North Pole – “broke off and moved south,” Hudson said.

In cities where temperatures reached the 40s, 50s and even higher Sunday, the temperature Monday will range from the teens to well below zero. And with the wind chill, cities throughout the Midwest will feel far colder than the minus 4 that Hudson said was expected in Barrow, Alaska, the nation’s northernmost city.

The frigid weather caused Illinois State Police to issue several warnings to motorists, asking them to stay off the roads if at all possible ISP said the winds, which could gust up to 50 mph, would blow around the snow and create blizzard-like conditions, especially in rural areas. All motorists are being urged to remain at home, according to a news release from ISP, with Illinois State Police District 05 – Joliet strongly advising against non-essential travel.

DEMAND FOR SENIOR SERVICES GROWS Adult day care facility Autumn Country Club needs bigger space

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When Therese Black’s husband was diagnosed with dementia at 54, she needed to find a place for him to stay while she was working.

Gary, now 64, had to retire from a painting business but Therese said she still needed to work because she wasn’t old enough to retire. She managed to find a place for Gary to stay during the day at the Autumn Country Club, 1401 Plainfield Road, Joliet.

The club gives seniors such as Gary a place to hang out with others, play games and even get physical exercise.

“The staff here is just out of this world,” she said. “I just love them.”

Gary, of New Lenox, is among about 40 clients the club serves every day. Because the club is at full capacity with a waiting list of about 20 people, it is planning to move to a larger location at 107 N. Reed St. The location may open in April, said Christine Doyle, registered nurse with the club.

The new property will have a better layout plan for the club staff, a nicer porch and outdoor area and better off-street parking, said Catherine Waterman, the club’s program director.

But mostly, it will just be a larger building fit to serve 70 people.

“There is only so many people we can help right now,” she said. “There is a great need for it.”

The demand for senior services in general has been on the rise in recent years.

In 2012, the number of people served by the Senior Services Center of Will County In Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties increased by 10 percent to 56,752 from the year before, said Executive Director Pat Hensley.

The need for senior services will increase as the population in Will County continues to grow, she said. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county’s recorded 2010 population of 677,560 people was estimated to grow 0.7 percent in 2012.

The Autumn Country Club was established in 1990 and is owned by Waterman and Mary Anne Davies. The club gives physically or cognitively impaired adults the chance to maintain an active and social lifestyle through a club atmosphere, according to its website.

“The last thing we want it to be like is a nursing home,” Doyle said.

The club gives respite for caregivers, parents, children or spouses who need a place to take care of a loved one and give them a much-needed break.

Club staff also monitor their clients’ health and accommodate any special needs they have.

Doyle said the people who go the club engage in activities such as singing, arts and crafts and board games. All of the activities provide some form of mental and physical stimulation for the people.

“With an adult day care program, it allows them to get together with their own peer group and with their own friends,” Waterman said. “It allows them to get up and get out.

It helps with that homebound depression and isolation.”

Joliet businesses give view on future Downtown owners present their problems for revitalization plan

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Business owners would like to see more parking, more corporate business and fewer traffic headaches included in the city of Joliet’s downtown revitalization plan.

The city, along with the City Center Partnership, heard public proposals from six consultants who outlines plans to improve downtown Joliet earlier this month.

Pat Reimer, manager of Chicken-N-Spice, located at 251 N. Chicago St., said the city needs to focus on changing the downtown traffic flow.

“The first thing I would love to see is no more oneway streets,” Reimer said.

“It would take the fear out of coming downtown.”

Reimer said her customers frequently complain about the traffic pattern near Chicken-N-Spice, especially when surrounding roads are closed for construction. One customer who was attempting to pick up a large catering order was crying on the phone to Reimer because she couldn’t find a street that would get her into the parking lot, Reimer said.

“She was so rattled she didn’t know what to do,” Reimer said. “It’s a source of inconvenience.”

“They have to eliminate the parking meters,” Reimer said. “Why would you come downtown for lunch if you’re afraid of getting a $10 parking tick-

“You have to give people two hours to come here, sit down and relax.”

Georgouses added in order to help the restaurant business in downtown Joliet, the emphasis needs to be on filling corporate offices, rather than starting with food and beverage.

“The city wants to

bring entertainment and restaurants downtown,” he said. “You have to bring different businesses. More offices. You have to get people here who will support [the restaurants].”

But in order to bring businesses and residents downtown, you have to start by changing the area’s perception, said

James Smith, who owns James V. Smith & Associates, a real estate appraisal company at 305 N. Ottawa St. “The perception of safety comes first,” Smith said. “The old school of thought is that [downtown] is not safe. And at one time it wasn’t. But that has changed.”

The key, Smith said, is

to get more people living downtown to create more of a neighborhood atmosphere.

“You need that core group of people that are residing downtown,” he said. “There are plenty of people downtown during the day. But what happens at 5:30, 6 p.m.? You need those people living downtown seven days a week.”

Rod Tonelli, president of Ruettiger, Tonelli and Associates and a member of the panel that will select the downtown plan consultant, agreed that the key to revitalizing the area is getting people downtown on a more regular basis.

“The key is bodies,” Tonelli said. “Bodies that are there every single day.”

Tonelli’s engineering, design and geographic information technologies firm began in 1979 but left its downtown location in 1996. Tonelli said he was impressed by the consultant’s presentations, especially as they addressed the need of filling vacant buildings with corporate businesses.

“You need to fill the upper level of stores with offices and people who are here every day,” he said.

“That will take care of other issues like restaurant space and retail space.

That will drive the liveliness and activity that will put people literally on the street. It will improve the perception of activity downtown.”

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Brian Applegate remembers one of his most rewarding experiences as a firefighter was trying to calm someone pinned inside of a vehicle.

While physical fitness is necessary for the daily demands of being a firefighter, so are people skills, he said.

“I think most of our job beyond the skill portion is being able to talk to somebody on their worst days,” he said. “You need to make them feel like you’re there to make them feel better.”

Applegate’s skills as a firefighter has landed him a position as a district employee with the New Lenox Fire Protection District.

Becoming a district employee also allows for career advancement within a fire district, he said.

To make it as a district firefighter, Applegate had to pass a series of examinations lasting six months to enter an eligibility list to potentially become a district employee.

Mead said he will be on a probationary period for a year that will determine if he will stay with the district.

Fire district officials say they have had high turnover because pay in New Lenox is low compared to what firefighter/paramedics can get elsewhere.

In the past two months, the district has lost five firefighters to turnover and 49 in the past five years.

“I can’t blame [anyone] for that because they’re wanting to move forward,” Mead said.

The average starting salary for a firefighter is $37,000, which is less than the salaries offered by neighboring fire protection districts in Northwest Homer, Mokena, Lockport, Homer and Frankfort, according to fire district officials.

Fire district officials are asking for an increase in property taxes on a March referendum in part to increase pay

for firefighters.

The tax rate would increase from 36 cents to roughly 49 cents per $100 of overall assessed property values.

The six months Applegate spent testing to earn his place on the firefighter eligibility list was not easy.

Each firefighter candidate takes written, oral and interactive assessments conducted by the New Lenox Board of Fire Commissioners.

After the first test, the number of candidates is cut almost in half. The remaining candidates are assigned a score and rank. They are put on an eligibility list for two years with the hopes a spot for a district employee opens.

Applegate said he’s looking forward to his career as a firefighter/ paramedic in New Lenox.

“We’re a growing community,” he said.

“I’m very fortunate to work in the community.”

Former hospital employee knit family together with love

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com After Rosemary Muir of Joliet retired as a hospital ward clerk, she blessed that hospital with hundreds of knitted newborn caps, much in the way Rosemary knit her family together with her love and dedication.

She became the family breadwinner after her husband Edward became disabled, cared for her parents – her father after he became blind and her mother after she developed Alzheimer’s – and organized the family finances and personal information, said Mary Lynn Ferone of Joliet, one of Rosemary’s daughters.

“She just always held things together,” said Jackie Muir, of Chicago, another daughter. “She was the backbone of the family, a strong person, a warm person, someone you could confide in, the voice of reason, very kind, loving and understanding. She did not get mad at people; she was the peacemaker.”

Both girls related warm Christmastime memories of visiting the former St. Vincent orphanage in Chicago with their parents and bringing toys for the orphans. Rosemary openly shared with her girls the knowledge they were adopted from that orphanage at a time when parents often kept adoption details hidden.

“One of the earliest things I remember was my mother telling the story of how ‘Mommy and Daddy always wanted a baby to

“She told us how they prayed and prayed until one day ‘Sister Mary Ellen called us and said she had

a baby for us and that baby was you.’ ” Jackie said her adoption did not become official until she was 6 years old because doctors had mistakenly thought Jackie had a heart condition that could require surgery.

“If I would have needed open heart surgery, there was no way my parents could have paid for it,” Jackie said. “Thankfully, I did not need it.”

Golfing with dad

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent When Channahon’s Josh Manion was just 4 his dad Bobby Manion started taking him along to play golf.

By age 9, Josh really got into the game which has now led him to an interesting career in professional golf management.

It all started with his dad, Josh told me.

“Some of my best times was just playing with my dad. He’s the one who got me started. He would go to all my tournaments and watch,” he said.

What a great dad!

I’ve known Josh for years; he was a student of mine when I taught Sunday School at Channahon United Methodist Church.

So I thought it was pretty interesting when his grandma, Frieda Manion, mentioned that Josh had graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in business and marketing and a focus on PGA management.

Not a golfer myself [Josh has offered some lessons], I had no idea how one becomes a pro golfer or part of the pro circuit, let alone that you could go to a university and study golf

management.

The fact that Channahon has its own award winning golf course – Heritage Bluffs – is a real plus for Josh and other area golfers.

Josh began playing in tournaments in Channahon, as well as at Pontiac Elks and Wolf Creek, both in the Pontiac area. There weren’t too many junior tournaments back then, but that is really changing, he said.

He attended junior golf camps before he reached high school age. And of course dad was there all along the way to support and cheer him on.

As a member of the Minooka Community High School golf team, Josh was rated No. 1 on the JV team and was named all conference during both his freshman and senior years.

While going on the pro circuit is always in the back of Josh’s mind, he has set his sights in realty and is now working at Playin’ Thru Golf indoor golf facility on VonEsch Road in Plainfield owned by his former instructor and former Nettle Creek (Morris) head golf pro Tom Powers.

“He was one of my first instructors way back

when, I can’t say enough about him,” Josh said about Powers.

Powers is providing Josh with a great opportunity. He has multiple duties at Playin’ Thru but it gives him the opportunity to meet people and bring in his own clientele to teach.

Josh remembers all his former golf instructors, including John Keegan from Morris Country Club and Mark Fehrenbacher from Heritage Bluff, who taught him along the way.

Now Josh is putting those skills to work and he loves seeing the faces of his students light up when golf really clicks for them.

One of those clients is a 12-year-old girl. She wasn’t bad to start with and after just three lessons she was hitting the ball 90 percent of the time. Now they’ll start working on her distance skills.

During spring break a year and a half ago Josh and his dad took a trip to San Diego to play golf.

Josh’s favorite times are still those he spends with his dad.

“An aunt told me that, in 1948, she [Rosemary] bought the first TV for the family from Fowlers,” Jackie said.

Jackie recalled the beautiful sweaters her mother knitted for both girls. Rosemary loved her job as hospital switchboard operator and often trained new employees, Jackie said. Rosemary became a ward clerk only after the position was phased out.

“When she graduated from high school in 1942, it was war time,” Jackie said.

“The average person did not go to college; she went to work. She was always very proud that we went to college.”

Jackie recalled struggling with organic chem-

istry in college and how staunchly her mother supported her, even when Jackie had to take the class twice. Rosemary was not, Jackie said, her daughters’ best friend, as some parents identify themselves, but rather a very good parent.

“She was very fair and loving; she wanted the best for us. Even if she could not afford it, she still wanted the best,” Jackie said. “She guided us, taught us right from wrong and always told us to do the best we could, that she was on our side. It really made a difference in our lives.”

Rosemary was 89 when she died Nov. 25.

Born April 23, 1940 in Joliet, to Edward and Jean (nee Behringer) Claussen.

A U.S. Navy veteran and a boilermaker with over 35 years of service with the Local Union #1 Chicago. Cliff enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, stained glass, basketball games and spending time with his five grandkids who will truly miss him.

Former University of Arizona AD dies at 90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS TUCSON, Ariz. – Dave Strack, the former University of Arizona athletic director who hired the first black basketball coach at a major university, has died. He was 90.

Arizona said Sunday that Strack died Saturday.

Before going into athletic administration work, Strack coached basketball from 1960 to 1868 at Michigan, where his teams compiled a 113-89 record. His 1965 team, which featured Cazzie Russell, went 24-4 and lost the NCAA championship game to John Wooden’s UCLA squad, 91-80.

Strack was Arizona AD from 1972 to 1982.

Shortly after taking the job, he hired Fred Snowden as the first black basketball coach at an NCAA Division I school.

Strack spoke about the hiring in an interview with the Tucson Citizen at Snowden’s funeral in 1994. He said he and then-university President John Schaefer spoke about the issue at length and decided Tucson “was ready” and basketball “was ready” to have a black head coach.

“Fred fit the bill and didn’t disappoint anyone,” Strack said.

Strack told Arizona Daily Star columnist Greg Hansen last year that he had been under pressure to bring in Jerry Tarkanian as McKale Center opened.

“But I hired Fred Snowden,” Strack said. “It wasn’t about breaking the color barrier, it was because I believed Fred could rebuild our basketball program faster than Tark could. And he did, too. ... He got [Eric] Money and Coniel [Norman], and it was built, almost overnight.”

Mason was acquitted on all charges.

Strack’s accomplishments at Arizona included the opening of McKale Center and the move from the Western Athletic Conference to the then-Pac-10 in 1978.

Current Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne called Strack “a forward-looking administrator.”

Strack grew up in Indiana but played basketball at Michigan from 1943 to 1946 and twice was named the team’s MVP. He was an assistant basketball coach for the Wolverines from 1948 to 1959. He left in 1960 to become head coach at Idaho, then left after one season to take the Michigan head coaching job.

Strack was named associate athletic director at Michigan in 1970, then two years later took the Arizona AD job.

He was preceded in death in 2011 by wife Ruth Ann Stark.

They met as Michigan students and were married 64 years.

Mall gunman had no criminal record

By BEN NUCKOLS The Associated Press COLUMBIA, Md. – The gunman who shot two people to death at a Maryland shopping mall had no criminal record, police said Sunday, but little else was

known about the 19-yearold and whether he knew his victims.

Darion Marcus Aguilar of College Park, Md., carried out Saturday’s attack with a 12-gauge shotgun at a skateboard shop at the Mall in Columbia in suburban

Baltimore before killing himself, police said.

Howard County Police Chief William McMahon said investigators are trying to determine whether Aguilar knew either of the victims, who were both employees of a shop called

Zumiez.

Police identified the victims as Brianna Benlolo, 21, of College Park, Md., and Tyler Johnson, 25, of Mount Airy, Md. McMahon offered no motive for the shooting.

“There are a lot of unanswered questions,” Mc-

Mahon said at a news conference. Aguilar purchased the shotgun legally last month at a store in neighboring Montgomery County.

It took hours to identify the gunman since he was carrying ammunition and a

backpack containing homemade explosives, McMahon said.

Five other people were hurt in the attack and its aftermath, but only one was hit by gunfire. All were released from hospitals by Saturday evening.

California drought has ranchers selling cattle

By JASON DEAREN The Associated Press AROMAS, Calif. – In January, business at the 101 Livestock Market’s cattle auction on California’s Central Coast is usually slow. The busy season is normally in June or July, when ranchers have had time to fatten their animals for weeks on spring grasses.

This year, however, business is bustling, with packed pens of moaning cattle and cowboys standing on tip-toe to get a glance at their potential prizes.

Because of historically dry conditions, California’s soil moisture – a key ingredient for the forage that cattle graze on – is low throughout the state.

With feed costs high and weeks of dry weather in the forecast, ranchers are already selling off parts of their herds as normally green grazing pastures have turned brown.

“We’re in the drought now, so a lot of these are going back to Texas,” said rancher and auction house co-owner Monty Avery, gesturing to a pen packed

full of cows. “We usually sell about 100-150 animals per week. Now we’re seeing 800-1,000 per week, so the volume’s jumped up.”

Gov. Jerry Brown has formally proclaimed a drought in California, a move that codified what farmers and ranchers in the state had known for weeks. The U.S. Drought Monitor has said there are “extreme drought” conditions in central and northern California, where much of the state’s ranching is located.

California is now in its third dry year, with little snowfall so far this winter and forecasts suggesting only more sunshine. Precipitation in most of the state is less than 20 percent of normal and reservoirs are dwindling – one town on California’s far northern coast said it has fewer than 100 days of drinking water in storage.

The state is the nation’s leader in dairy cows, and fourth overall in the U.S. for total number of cattle, trailing Texas, Nebraska and Kansas, according to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. With little free food available

“If the weather doesn’t change, I might need to get rid of all of them,” said Martin, who is in his 70s and used to run about 600

heads of cattle. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life ... It’s a disaster.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Jan. 16 declared a drought disaster in some California counties, which allows farmers to apply for low-interest loans to help them cope.

Ranchers are not included in the program.

To help them navigate the historic dry weather, the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources is holding workshops.

“From previous droughts we’ve learned that feeding the whole herd through the drought may spell the end of business,” said Glenn Nader, adviser for the program in Sutter and Yuba counties.

Some of California’s herd will be headed to Texas, which is recovering from its own severe drought. That state’s herd of five million head of cattle has shrunk over the past few years by a quarter, said Jason Cleere, a rancher and beef cattle specialist with Texas AgriLife Extension at Texas A&M University.

But as the drought has eased in most of Texas, the herd is being rebuilt, creating a market for California’s ranchers looking to sell.

“There’s a lot of room for more cows to come into our state, and for ranchers to add some back,” Cleere said.

Vladislav Miftakhov, a student at Penn State’s satellite campus in Altoona, was in jail Sunday after being arrested Friday and charged with possessing a weapon of mass destruction, risking a catastrophe and several other drug and weapons counts, according to court records. The records did not list a lawyer for Miftakhov, who was being held on $500,000 bail.

“Miftakhov stated his intent was to set the devices off in a remote field and did not intend on ‘blowing anything up,’” the affidavit said.

FORT WORTH, Texas – A brain-dead, pregnant Texas woman’s body was removed from life support Sunday, as the hospital keeping her on machines against her family’s wishes acceded to a judge’s ruling that it was misapplying state law.

Marlise Munoz’s body soon will be buried, after John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth announced it would not fight Judge R.H. Wallace Jr.’s Friday order to pronounce her dead and return her body to her family. The 23-week-old fetus she was carrying will not be born.

Munoz’s husband, Erick Munoz, sued the hospital because it would not remove life support as he said his wife would have wanted in such a situation. Erick and Marlise Munoz worked as paramedics and were familiar with end-of-life issues, and Erick said his wife had told him she would not want to be kept alive under such circumstances.

But the hospital refused his request, citing Texas law that says life-sustaining treatment cannot be withdrawn from a pregnant patient, regardless of her end-of-life wishes.

Wallace sided Friday with Erick Munoz, saying in his order: “Mrs. Munoz is dead.”

“From the onset, JPS has said its role was not to make nor contest law but to follow it,” according to a statement released by hospital spokeswoman J.R. Labbe. “On Friday,

a state district judge ordered the removal of life-sustaining treatment from Marlise Munoz. The hospital will follow the court order.”

Shortly afterward, Erick Munoz’s attorneys announced that she had been disconnected from life support about 11:30 a.m.

Erick found his wife unconscious in their Haltom City, Texas, home Nov. 26, possibly due to a blood clot.

Doctors soon determined that she was brain-dead, which meant that she was both medically and legally dead under Texas law, but kept her on machines to keep her organs functioning for the sake of the fetus.

Legal experts interviewed said the hospital was misreading the Texas Advance Directives Act and that the law doesn’t have an absolute command to keep someone like Munoz on life support.

GENEVA – Two days of face-to-face peace talks yielded a narrow and tentative agreement Sunday for women and children trapped in a besieged Syrian city, and the government said President Bashar Assad had no intention of giving up “the keys to Damascus.”

With little progress to show after months of international pressure for the conference in Geneva, the U.N. mediator hoping to broker an end to Syria’s civil war defended their pace.

The limited agreement to let women and children leave a blockaded part of the old city of Homs, under negotiation for at least two days, fell far short of expectations and was called into question by multiple reports of govern-

The talks have yet to touch upon the issue of a possible transitional government – their purpose according to terms laid out when they were first conceived.

Efforts to oust ‘toxic’ leaders in Army Dave Matsuda, an anthropologist studying suicides among troops in the U.S. Army at the Army’s request, is pointing at “toxic leaders” as part of the problem.

Matsuda was hired in 2010 by then-Brig. Gen. Peter C. Bayer Jr. to try to help U.S. commanders understand what was going on below the surface in Iraq.

Bayer was supervising the Army’s draw-down in Iraq at the time.

He wanted Matsuda’s help figuring out why almost 30 soldiers in Iraq had committed suicide or attempted suicide the previous year.

After studying the cases of eight of the dead soldiers, Matsuda found that while they did have complicated personal lives – generally given

as the reason they had committed suicide – there also was fault to be found among the military commanders who had led them.

In each of the cases, he discovered a leader or leaders who had contributed to creating a “toxic” environment for the soldiers.

Matsuda said the evidence does not show the leaders caused the soldiers to take their lives, but his report said that suicidal behavior “can be triggered by ... toxic command climate.”

He described platoon leaders taking turns to see who could “smoke” the soldier the worst, finding the most extreme tortures, duties and other annoyances to make that grunt’s life miserable. It was psy-

chological warfare at the soldier’s expense.

In 2012, armed with the years of research, the Army revised its leadership manual to identify toxic leadership, and followed that up with a tiny pilot project, involving eight commanders, that allowed subordinates to evaluate their leaders anonymously.

There are plans to expand that process this year, and the Army expects to have anonymous evaluations of about 1,100 battalion and brigade commanders by late next year.

Fighting the enemy on the outside is a tough enough job. Soldiers shouldn’t be fighting the enemy on the inside, too.

Talley a man of many bowling hats USF women’s, men’s coach guides Romeoville’s strong season VIEWS Dick Goss Tony Talley could not let go, which comes as no surprise.

Talley is coaching the men’s and women’s bowling teams at University of St. Francis in their inaugural season. Yet his sense of loyalty demanded he remain as the boys’ coach at Romeoville for one more season.

The NAIA and IHSA seasons basically are simultaneous. Talley, who works third shift at Motorola in Schaumburg, sees himself coming and going.

“The high school team practices at Strike ‘N Spare in Lockport, and when they’re done, I shoot over to Town & Country (in Joliet) for the college practices,” he said. “I’ve kept going back and forth.

“It takes a toll on every aspect of life, healthwise and my family. Sacrifices have had to be made.”

Town & Country proprietor George Kontos lends a big helping hand, especially with the USF women’s team, and Mike Key, Talley’s former assistant at Romeoville, also is helping run things with the USF teams until Talley arrives each day.

Talley was excited for the opportunity to coach on the next level when St. Francis announced formation of men’s and women’s bowling programs in December of 2011. But why stay for one last season at

“I did this for (Romeoville athletic director) Jim Boudouris,” Talley said. “Plus, this was my first freshman class and I didn’t want to leave them now that they’re seniors (Dakota Vostry, Stephen Vaughn and Kyle Zaremba are the senior regulars).

“There were lots of sacrifices in life. But it’s a nice reward seeing these (Romeoville) kids do well.

They won conference and the regional.”

Talley approached St. Francis athletic director Dave Laketa “to see how he felt” about continuing to coach Romeoville this season. He gave his OK, and with Kontos’ and Key’s help, the energetic plan worked.

Romeoville was disappointed Saturday, failing to advance to state from the Andrew Sectional at Orland Bowl, although

Vostry did qualify as an individual. But the Spartans had quite a season, and USF’s freshman-laden women’s and men’s rosters have been strong.

The women’s lineup, especially, is loaded with local talent.

The top 64 teams qualify for the NAIA sectionals in March. The Saints’ women were ranked 44th, and their showing in their most recent tournament should improve that

standing. The men were ranked 70th.

“The girls are all bowling above what we thought they would,” Talley said. “The men are where we hoped they would be. They still are in position to make a run at getting in the sectional.”

The regular women’s lineup includes Courtney Fowler (Lockport), Lauren Troha (Lockport), Morgan Karwoski-Flaherty (Lincoln-Way West) and

Taylor Wilmoth (Plainfield North).

Talley spent five years coaching at Plainfield South. The year after he left for Romeoville, 2009, South won the state title.

His Romeoville teams finished ninth in 2011 and fifth in 2012.

“That first core of kids we had at Romeoville was special,” he said.

“Romeoville was always the team that came in last place. But that group had incredible fight in them.

Before long, they were not the doormats, and their drive got passed down to the next group and to the next group, which is this team.

“It’s something to see kids grow freshman year to senior year. They go from kids to young men before your eyes. One of the big things this year is how Dakota Vostry has developed.”

Talley is a threetime king of Joliet area bowling and a member of the Greater Joliet Area Bowling Hall of Fame.

However, he has not been able to continue his career as he would like because of injury.

“I hurt my back five years ago and have been struggling with it since,” he said. “Every year I hurt it, go to rehab, they patch me up, I get back on the lanes and I hurt it again.

I haven’t bowled a full season in five years.

“This year I injured it at the beginning of bowling season and haven’t even had time to go to the doctor.”

It is easy to see why.

Morris competitive dance team wins own sectional

By T.G. SMITH tsmith@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris competitive dance team won its second straight IHSA sectional on Saturday, topping the field in Class 1A to head up six teams that will advance to state next weekend.

Additionally, the Minooka dance team took first place in the Class 3A portion of the event.

“This is honestly the most amazing win. I feel like we really have transformed as a team from the beginning,” Morris senior captain Molli Aldrich said.

“We’ve worked so hard and to have this experience with

The Redskins finished first to Fieldcrest who was second in this year’s Morris Sectional. The locals had a team score of 84.70 to 83.40

for Fieldcrest.

“Very exciting. Especially to win on our home floor makes it even better,” Morris coach Becky Struck said.

“We had so many fans here who came out to support

us and we are thankful for them because that helps the team with their energy. The girls rocked an excellent performance and I could not be happier.”

Six teams advanced out of each class with Clinton, Normal University, Mahomet-Seymour and Knoxville also advancing from Class A. Junior captain Peighton Shannon said that the team simply fed off the home crowd.

“I’m really, really excited. We talked about energy before and that energy is unforgettable,” she said. “I definitely felt the pressure since it was here because I knew that our fan base was

going to be really strong and it was.”

Going in, some of the girls on the team were unsure if performing in front of the home crowd would make them even more nervous. However, Struck said that it proved to be an asset for her Redskins.

“They are used to performing at home here for basketball games, but today there was added energy for a sectional competition,” she said. “Typically going away to another team’s home floor makes it difficult because we are not familiar with things but I think having it here made it much easier for the girls. They really used that energy.”

In Class 3A action, Minooka finished first ahead of Oswego. The Indians had the best score of any team in the field with a 92.60 while the Panthers had 89.13. Also advancing from Class 3A were: O’Fallon, Collinsville, Plainfield Central (85.33) and Plainfield North (85.27).

“I am so proud of this team. They are very dedicated and hard working girls,” Minooka coach Cathy Gliwa said. “This was their best performance to date. Our goal this year was to qualify for state. Winning sectionals and qualifying at the same time is amazing – I am glad I got to share that moment with them. All their hard work paid off.”

Lewis retires Kennedy’s No. 14

USF men, women fall at Saint Xavier

STAFF REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University retired the basketball jersey number 14 worn by Joliet native Tom Kennedy during Saturday’s women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader against Bellarmine.

Kennedy was honored along with the Lewis All-Decades Men’s Basketball Team of the 1950s and 1960s.

The All-Decades team includes Pat Callahan ’55, Tony Delgado ’65, Ray Fedo ’56, Tom Kennedy ’62, Al Latham ’61, John Lucas ’70, Bill McManaman ’69, Wayne Molis ’66, Bill Pauls ’66, Duane Szymkowski ’66, Bob Thayer ’61 and Ferry Williams ’68.

Fedo and Molis were recognized posthumously.

Kennedy, a 1982 inductee into the Lewis Athletics

Hall of Fame, competed for the Flyers from 1959-62.

He is 26th in school history in scoring with 1,138 points, averaging 16.7.

He was team MVP and a Catholic College All-American in 1962 after being named Lewis’ Most Improved Player in 1960 and ’61.

A 13th-round draftee of the Chicago Zephyrs, Kennedy also coached the Lewis’ men’s soccer team from 1967-69, played baseball for the Flyers and served in several administrative positions.

He most recently has been executive director and president of new ventures at Regis University in Denver.

His number is the second Lewis men’s basketball number to be retired.

The first was Larry Tucker’s.

The worst was finally behind the Blackhawks – the sloppy play, the lackluster efforts, the dog days of January.

But on Sunday night, Toews was standing in front of his locker, and he was gritting his teeth.

Feeling angry, feeling frustrated. The worst had only gotten worse – the sloppy play, the lackluster efforts, the dog days of January.

“I don’t know if there was any emotion, really, as you could tell,” he said.

“We just threw away another two points. I don’t know. I don’t really have

The previous Sunday, the Hawks were coming off their biggest weekend of the season – inspired, high-intensity victories over the league-leading Anaheim Ducks and the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins. The heightened weekend seemed to lift the Hawks out of their midseason doldrums.

But a messy shootout loss at Detroit, a lifeless loss at Minnesota, and Sunday’s come-fromahead loss to the Jets erased all that goodwill, all that energy, all that confidence. In their last home game until March – with a difficult six-game road trip and the Olympic break looming – the Hawks gave up three third-period goals in a game they should have won easily.

Sox make successful pitch to fans

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com CHICAGO – SoxFest was a chance for fans to rinse the soot and grime leftover from the crash and burn season that was 2013.

It was an opportunity to see $68 million free-agent Jose Abreu in person, and to jump on board with a vision general manager Rick Hahn spelled out for the future. It came and went for fans who showed they’re not quite over last season – they grumbled about everything from Adam Dunn to weaknesses at catcher to Alexei Ramirez’s atten-

tion span to manager Robin Ventura’s lack of fire the day after Hahn awarded Ventura with a contract extension. Some expressed legitimate concerns about who their closer will be after Addison Reed was traded for third base prospect Matt Davidson.

The gripes didn’t dominate the weekend, but they were heard. And taken in stride by a management team and players who understand.

“You have a season like that, it’s tough on everybody,” Dunn said. “As tough as everyone thinks it is on them, we lived it

every single day. Not to say they didn’t, [but] this is what we do [for a living].’’

Hahn could have reminded fans that the 63-99 season, as bad as it was as the franchise’s worst since 1970, marked only the second time since 1990 – a span of 23 years – that the Sox finished worse than third place. It was only the eighth time they were worse than second.

That’s pretty good, especially with a World Series title sprinkled in there in 2005.

By all accounts, the Sox’s arrow seems to be

pointed up even though the list of contenders in the American League Central in 2014 will start with Detroit and end somewhere around Kansas City and Cleveland.

They have a lot of ground to make up.

“We have a tough road to hoe,” said Don Cooper, who is preparing for his 12th season as Sox pitching coach. “We have a lot of young players. What Rick has done has made us look much better for the future. As far as the immediate future, I think it’s going to be a heck of a challenge for us.”

By OSKAR GARCIA The Associated Press HONOLULU – Dallas running back DeMarco Murray caught a 20-yard pass for a touchdown and Carolina running back Mike Tolbert plunged into the end zone for a 2-point conversion with less than 1 minute to give Jerry Rice a win over Deion Sanders in the first schoolyard-style Pro Bowl on Sunday.

The touchdown and conversion gave Rice a comeback after Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles threw a 12-yard touchdown to Cleveland tight end Jordan Cameron with less than 5 minutes to play to give Sanders a 21-14 lead.

The touchdowns by Cameron and Murray were the only scores of the second half in a game that had eight turnovers – including

six interceptions – and nine sacks.

Foles was the only quarterback of six in the game to not throw an interception.

He was named offensive MVP. Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson and Carolina quarterback Cam Newton also had touchdowns for Team Sanders.

New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham and Cleveland wide receiver Josh Gordon caught touchdowns for Team Rice.

The Pro Bowlers were split up by the NFL greats in a new draft format meant to improve the game. The picks made earlier in the week created matchups that pitted usual teammates against each other and challenged Rice and Sanders to compare the all-stars against one another.

The result was a game that appeared more competitive than in years past, with some big hits and fewer shenanigans.

CLEAN TEETH, HAPPY DOG Pet professionals offer tips to keep your dogs teeth healthy, clean

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com Has sweet-tempered Fido suddenly turned cranky? It might be time to peek inside his mouth.

Bad teeth can cause bad behavior, as well as bad breath. More than 80 percent of dogs suffer from periodontal disease said Kristy Dilworth, owner of Smart Dogs Training and Lodging, and, as in humans, which can lead to heart disease.

“People don’t realize it,” Dilworth said. “I’ve seen dogs’ whole demeanors change because they had rotten teeth. And when puppies are teething, it’s harder to keep their attention. Every dog is different when it comes to handling pain.”

Since dogs can’t brush their teeth or say, “My mouth hurts,” it’s up to owners to maintain good dental habits. This is especially important for dogs that eat only wet food, Dilworth said, as wet food lacks abrasion.

The crunching action of dry food certainly helps – some owners mix a small amount with the dogs’ wet food to help strengthen gums, too, Dilworth said – but dry food alone won’t keep teeth completely clean and healthy.

“If people can brush their [dogs’] teeth once a day, great,” Dilworth said.

Both Roo, a 6-year-old Australian cattle dog, and Rooby, a 4-year-old Australian Cattle/Lab mix, enjoy the process since it gives them “one-on-one” time with Portlock.

Good doggie oral hygiene is especially important to Portlock, as all the dogs she has owned are rescued and arrive at her home with teeth and gums

in less than tip-top shape.

One malamute had canines so brittle, they broke off in his mouth, Portlock said.

“You really can’t be a good malamute with your canines gone,” Portlock said.

Roo gets extra cleaning every five weeks when she has a “spa day.” Rooby’s vet cleans her teeth every three weeks, as Rooby is less comfortable with the process than Roo is, so Portlock’s efforts are less effective with her.

In between brushings, the dogs only eat commer-

cially prepared snacks that help promote healthy teeth and gums, Portlock said, and these the dogs eat every day.

“On Sundays when we watch football, they get treats, too,” Portlock said, “only they get dental treats.”

Make the task easier by selecting a dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste and – for the first few brushings only – putting a small treat on the brush so the dog understands teeth brushing time is “fun time,” Dilworth said.

If your dog still rebels,

let him at least swish the toothpaste in his mouth, similar to when adults rinse their mouths with water when toothbrushes aren’t available. Nylabone chew toys also help clean teeth, Dilworth said, and a good diet and plenty of fresh water help contribute to oral health.

Healthy gums will have “a nice pink color.

Inflamed areas should be checked with the dog’s vet, as should any black discoloration, Dilworth said. There also should be no yellow or brown tartar buildup on teeth.

If the dog allows it, run a finger along his teeth and gums and note any flinching or other reactions that may signal pain, Dilworth said. Check for loose teeth, excessive drooling or foul “doggie breath.” This last can signal trouble in other areas of the body, such as the kidneys.

Puppy teething is another cause of mouth pain, which inevitably leads to chewing for relief. To ensure puppies don’t gnaw on inappropriate items [children’s toys, Daddy’s slippers, etc.], keep some frozen washcloths handy.

“Dogs love those,” Dilworth said. “Flavored Nylabones are good, too.”

Normally, puppy teething begins around 3 to 5 months and stop when adult teeth come in. However, some dogs become habitual chewers, Dilworth said. This is most likely to happen if the dog is bored.

If that occurs, Dilworth said, don’t try to distract the puppy with a treat or a chew toy. The dog may continue the chewing, thinking, in his mind, that he is being rewarded for it.

Instead, take the dog for a little walk.

“Five minutes later, give him a bone,” Dilworth said. “He’ll associate it with a nice walk.”

Change to Westminster show celebrates the every-dog

By JENNIFER PELTZ The Associated Press NEW YORK – When the nation’s foremost dog show added an event open to mixed breeds, owners cheered that every-dogs were finally having their day.

They see the Westminster Kennel Club’s new agility competition, which will allow mutts at the elite event next month for the first time since the 1800s, as a singular chance to showcase what unpedigreed dogs can do.

“It’s great that people see that, ‘Wow, this is a really talented mixed breed that didn’t come from a fancy breeder,’ ” said Stacey Campbell, a San Francisco dog trainer heading to Westminster with Roo!, a high-energy – see exclamation point – husky mix

“I see a lot of great dogs come through shelters, and they would be great candidates for a lot of sports. And sometimes they get overlooked because they’re not purebred dogs,” Campbell

said.

Roo! will be one of about 225 agility dogs whizzing through tunnels, around poles and over jumps before the Westminster crowd. And, if she makes it to the championship, on national TV.

Animal-rights advocates call the development a good step, though it isn’t ending their long-standing criticism that the show champions a myopic view of man’s best friend.

Westminster’s focus is still on the nearly 190 breeds – three of them newly eligible – that get to compete toward the best-inshow trophy; more than 90 percent of the agility competitors are purebreds, too.

But Westminster representatives have made a point of noting the new opening for mixed breeds, or “all-American dogs,” in showspeak.

“It allows us to really stand behind what we say about Westminster being the show for all the dogs in our lives” while enhancing the 138-year-old event with a growing, fun-to-watch sport, said David Frei, the show’s longtime TV host.

It is true that at the bridge table, producing an unusual bid might not be a good idea if it is going to flummox partner into making an error. But if you have discussed the situation before, you can safely produce the unusual.

Look at today’s North hand. You deal and open three hearts. With the opponents retaining a respectful silence, your partner responds four diamonds. Assuming this is natural and forcing, what would you rebid?

What does four diamonds promise? Many teachers use the expression “six and 16” – at least a six-card suit and 16 high-card points.

Also, typically, responder is very short in opener’s suit, especially when that is a major.

How should opener react? With no support for responder’s suit, he may rebid his own suit or three no-trump (if legal, of course). With moderate support, like a low doubleton (or perhaps honor-doubleton with an unappealing hand), he raises responder’s suit. But with good support (any three cards, or honor-doubleton and an appealing hand), he shows a side-suit singleton (or void).

In this deal, North should rebid four spades. And that is just what South wants to hear. He can now leap majestically to six diamonds.

Note that even after a club lead and trump shift, the contract is laydown. South takes one spade, one heart, eight diamonds and two spade ruffs on the board.

Celebrate big birthday while on a budget Dear Abby: I’m a 14-yearold girl going on 15. I am half-Mexican. In the Mexican culture, a girl’s 15th birthday is the year in which she becomes a woman. Most girls have a “quinceañera” party for this birthday. But these celebrations cost a lot of money – almost as much as a wedding.

I have been debating whether I should have one.

My mom says she would rather put the money toward my college fund.

I agree with her, but I also feel like I should acknowledge my Mexican background as much as I do the Caucasian part. I don’t want to pressure my parents, but I also don’t want to be left out when my friends talk about their quinceañeras. What do you think? – Party Or Not In Northern California

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Party Or Not: A quinceañera may cost almost as much as a wedding, but there are weddings for every budget. We all have heard of families who have gone into debt to finance a wedding, but I never advise readers to go into debt for something like that.

If your primary reason for wanting a quinceañera is so you won’t feel left out of the conversation when friends talk about theirs, consider a small celebration with some of your girlfriends.

That way your college fund won’t be depleted, and you’ll spend fewer years paying off student loans.

One of my friends, Fabiola, told me some godmothers (“madrinas”) help to defray the cost of a quinceañera.

There can be a godmother for the cake, another for the dress, etc.

But she also told me although her mother insisted she have a quinceañera, in thinking back about it, she wishes she’d had that money for college. There are other ways to celebrate your Mexican heritage than spending a lot of money, so please give this some serious thought.

Like many women my age, I’m on several medications.

Should I be actively managing them? Or can I leave that to my doctor?

Dear Reader: Many older adults are on a number of medications, prescribed to treat different health conditions. Yet each medication you take has the potential to interact – sometimes dangerously – with another.

And if you see specialists for various health conditions, your medications may be prescribed by several different doctors.

If that’s the case, work with your primary care physician (PCP) to manage your medications. That means reviewing all of them with your PCP at every visit. Make sure to tell

Your doctor can make sure each drug is appropriate for you, and check that your medications don’t interact with one another.

At any medical visit, your doctor may suggest starting a new medication or changing the dose of one you already take. But time constraints may prevent your doctor from providing a detailed explanation of why and what to expect. So you need to take the initiative.

My colleague Dr. Anne Fabiny is chief of geriatrics at Harvard-affiliated Cambridge Health Alliance and editor in chief of Harvard Women’s Health Watch. She recommends asking lots of questions.

First, make sure you understand why the doctor is suggesting the medication, and what it is going to do. Ask what adverse effects the drug might have and which ones warrant a call to your doctor.

Find out how long you’ll be on the medicine. And check back in with your doctor after a few weeks to let him or her know how you’re doing.

On my website, I’ve put a list of 10 questions to ask your doctor every time you get a new prescription.

If you’re thinking of stop-

ping one of your medications, perhaps because of unpleasant side effects, let your doctor know first.

You and your doctor can explore other options, such as lowering the dose or switching to a different drug.

When I was early in my training in internal medicine, I got my first lesson in how difficult it could be to make sure a patient was taking the right medicines.

A patient of mine was getting medicines prescribed by several specialists – 13 medications in all. At every visit, I went over what I thought was the total list of her medicines, and she said I had it exactly right.

She was crippled by arthritis, so one day I made a home visit. She offered me some

tea, and as we sat down at the dining room table, I noticed a beautiful glass vase – full of pills.

Her daughter told me each morning she put her hand in the vase, grabbed a bunch of pills and swallowed them. She knew she should take each pill as it was prescribed, but she felt “it would all work out OK in the end” the way she was doing it.

After she had gone into heart failure three times in three months, I (and her daughter) finally convinced her to take the medicines as prescribed. Her health improved.
