Central Presbyterian Church The Central Presbyterian Church, located on the northwest corner of Richards Street and First Avenue, was built in 1895, with Joliet limestone under the direction of Rev. D. C. Milner, and the architectural firm of Knox and Elliot.

The Victorian Gothic style church, shown here in the then image, was built on the east side of the city as the population of Joliet moved from the city center. Organized as a church in 1844, the first Central Presbyterian Church was built in downtown Joliet on the southeast corner of Ottawa and Van Buren Streets.

The bell that rang for more than 40 years in the tower of the old downtown Presbyterian Church was placed in the belfry of the new eastside church. The bell was purchased in the 1850s at a cost of $500 and for many years was the only bell in town and rang for fires as well as church services.

The now photograph shows a view of the old church today which is located at 17 South Richards Street. Considered a local landmark, the old Central Presbyterian Church is part of the Jacob Henry Estate today.

Frankfort continues to celebrate Winter On The Green

By MAUREEN BLEVINS Shaw Media correspondent What better way to fight cabin fever than by getting out and enjoying some winter activities? The village of Frankfort’s cure is its Winter On The Green.

Mary Canino, Frankfort manager of community relations, said Winter On The Green has evolved over the past 20 years from what was originally just two events to six consecutive Sundays.

On Sunday at Breidert Green Park in Frankfort, the Frankfort Lions Club co-sponsored the Winter Games events that included kite flying, street hockey, ice bowling and a cardboard Iditarod.

Rod Campbell and Dean Shoucair of the Lions Club were on hand to help keep things

moving. Campbell said the Lions Club has been involved in Winter On The Green for the past three or four years.

Although the weather was cold and there was blowing snow, there were a few people willing to try flying kites.

Ethan Mills and Alex Desjardins, sixth-graders from Hickory Creek School, were able to get their kites airborne with a little help from Shoucair and his wife, Camille.

Riley Clark, 10, and Michael Svehla, 9, tried ice bowling and hockey, while Svehla’s younger sisters, Chloe, Willow and Laurel, preferred the hot chocolate and cookies. Caitlyn Lim, 5, also had a sled ride across the green, but she preferred the ice bowling.

Balloons filled with water were frozen to replace bowling balls, presenting quite a

challenge since they do not freeze perfectly round. Caitlyn didn’t seem to mind, however, and had more luck tossing the balls at the pins than rolling them.

A roaring fire and complimentary treat of hot chocolate and cookies helped keep participants and visitors warm.

Cassidy Clarke, a ninth-grader from Frankfort, enjoying the warmth of the fire, said it

was a first-time visit for her family, and she thought the events were fun.

“Actually more fun than I expected,” she admitted.

One older couple, Bill and Sandy Laude of Frankfort, said they try to get over to the green every Sunday to check it out.

“It’s a nice time out,” Sandy said.

According to Mary Canino, the two biggest draws are the Ice Fest and the chili cook-off, each of which tend to draw between 200 to 300 people, she said. Admitting that so much depends on the weather, she did make it clear that if the temperature were too cold or too inclement, the chili tasting would be moved indoors to the Founders Center.

Although Sunday’s weather might have hampered the turnout, Canino still felt that overall it was “pretty good.”

Those who did show up were having fun.

“And that’s all that matters,” she said.

State Supreme Court rules Will County libraries in favor of D113A in lawsuit offer up a Great Read

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Illinois Supreme Court unanimously upheld a lower court decision to dismiss a lawsuit filed in 2010 against Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A. The lawsuit, Lutkauskas v.

Ricker, claimed that between 2007 and 2010, District 113A administrators and School Board members engaged in or aided illegal spending of $12 million from the district’s working cash fund, then took steps to conceal the expenditures.

Citing school code, the lawsuit sought dismissal of the defendants from their positions within the district and fines of as much as $10,000 against the defendants.

Of the defendants named

in the case – including former Superintendent Timothy Ricker and several former school board members – only Assistant Superintendent Mary Gricus remains with the district.

In a decision published Friday on its website, the court determined the plaintiffs could not seek financial recovery because the funds the plaintiffs alleged were improperly diverted from the working cash fund were not used for an improper purpose.

Because of this, there is no evidence the district suffered any financial loss, the decision said.

In a statement, plaintiffs Anthony Lutkauskas, Laura Reigle, Duane Bradley, Louis Emery and Janet Hughes said they understood the court’s decision, but disagreed with it.

“We are disappointed with the court’s decision, because it seems to eliminate precisely the strict controls that the statute imposes on working cash funds, leaving taxpayers with no accountability against boards that just decide to spend more than what is legally authorized,” the statement said. “Requiring taxpayers to show that the money was spent for nonlawful purposes eliminates precisely the protections we think the legislature intended for working cash fund monies.”

School Board President Cindy Kelly said the board is happy with the court’s decision.

“We are relieved it’s finally over and we can now concentrate on what’s important to us: the district’s children,” she said.

Community Summit on heroin to be held in April

Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, will participate in a statewide effort to reduce drunken driving over the Super Bowl weekend, Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.

Special enforcement efforts will include a roadside safety checkpoint, saturation patrols and seat belt enforcement zones at locations throughout the city, according to a news release.

Officers assigned to these details will be checking for impaired drivers as well as other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code with an emphasis on alcohol, insurance, occupant restraint, cellphone violations, and child restraint violations.

This enforcement campaign is possible through an IDOT grant and aims to reduce the number of impaired and unsafe drivers before, during, and after the Super Bowl festivities.

LOCAL BRIEFS Man pronounced dead; found outside garage

JOLIET – A 23-year-old Joliet resident was pronounced dead late Friday night after being found outside a parking garage.

The resident was found outside a parking deck in the 100 block of North Ottawa Street in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. The resident was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m. Friday.

Preliminary findings from an autopsy Saturday found the person died from multiple injuries due to a fall from heights, according to the coroner’s office. The final cause of death is pending police, autopsy and toxicology reports.

The name was being withheld as family members were being notified.

ROMEOVILLE – The 2015 Hero Helps Community Summit will be held from 8 a.m. to noon April 10 at the Romeoville Athletic & Events Center, 55 Phelps Ave. in Romeoville.

This year’s event will focus on “Next Steps” in the community’s public health response to the heroin and other drug overdose epidemic, according to a news release from event organizers.

The event includes a resource expo with representatives from more than 30 organizations available to provide information on their services.

Preregistration is not required but those planning on attending are encouraged to visit www. herohelpsevent.com to sign up.

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Area libraries and school districts are opening the 2015 Great Read community literacy program with a trivia contest and a new theme that “pops.”

The theme for this year is “Pop Goes the Culture,” and the program’s opening gala features a “Pop Culture Clash” trivia contest at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Barnes & Noble in Joliet.

Last year, the theme was World War, commemorating the centennial of World War I. At the opening event, a historical re-enactor told stories of the World War eras.

“Normally, we have a speaker or performer,” said co-organizer Tom Hernandez from Plainfield School District 202.

“This year, we’re doing something completely different.”

The opening event trivia contest this year will have 10 pop culture genres: Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Dungeons and Dragons, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Doctor Who, The Lord of the Rings and Sherlock Holmes.

Teams will be grouped into a bracket-tiered system and answer trivia questions about their favorite pop culture subgenre. Prizes include $25 gift cards to Barnes & Noble.

The Great Read program, an initiative to promote reading among students and adults, was started by Plainfield School District 202 and the Plainfield Public Library nine years ago. Back then, “Fahrenheit 451” was the centerpiece, and the program focused on one book each year.

But two years ago, the format changed to introduce a theme and thousands more book choices to readers. During the course of the Great Read, several other libraries and educational districts throughout Will County joined in.

This year’s theme broadens the base to anything pop culture.

Trash to Treasure event supports food pantry January always makes me want to clean out closets and get rid of stuff I don’t need or use.

After more than a year of remodeling, including rooms and closets, I have a lot of stuff to get rid of. Purple Hearts, AmVets and Good Will all have been making regular stops at the Stadalsky household.

But there are other ways to get rid of stuff, and what you might consider trash someone else might see as a treasure. Garage sales come to mind, but it’s a little nippy outside.

Laurie Musclow, recreation and public relations coordinator for the Village of Minooka, came up with a great idea. Last weekend was

With the village’s new community room, Musclow had more than enough room for the 45 tables that residents set up to sell their wares.

There was everything from tools to dolls and toys to clothing and knickknacks.

I even saw a guitar and a washer/dryer set for sale.

Retired union contractor Jim Wolf and his wife, Kathy, were selling Jim’s tools in an attempt to “empty out

the house,” Jim said. He had some other unique items for sale as well.

Jim and Kathy also go to Junk in the Trunk events, particularly in Morris where he says you sometimes can find antiques.

The village was selling off some old signage that no longer met state codes, Musclow said. If the iridescent coating wears off, the signs must be taken down.

Everything from directional to stops signs could be bought. Two lucky buyers walked away with the only stop signs.

The event not only gave locals an opportunity to sell or buy stuff, but Musclow made it a fundraiser as well. Each vendor paid just $5 to set up

a table. The money, about $150 because some donated even more than their share, went to the food pantry at the Minooka Bible Church.

Out in the foyer, Matt and Evan Strand, under the watchful eye of dad Eric, sold chili with all the toppings, chips, drinks and candy. The money they raised will go toward the boys’ upcoming trip to south Africa in 2016 with the Minooka High School Travel Abroad Program.

Sue Badalamenti and daughter Elizabeth Badalamenti were having a grand time during the Trash to Treasure event, for so many reasons. They got to clean out their house, make some money, swap great ideas with fellow vendors and custom-

ers and spend a lot of time socializing, Sue said.

She likened the atmosphere to hanging outside with her neighbors.

“We have a nice indoor place to have a garage sale,” Sue said of the new community room. “It’s really nice.”

The Trash to Treasure event will be held the third Saturday of the month.

“They were just saying, ‘Oh my gosh where are you now?’ and we had a nice discussion,” Linney said, adding that as far as she knows, it was the first live video chat done with students at Richland. “It makes this trip more meaningful,” she said.

Foster said he also participated in the discussion, answering and asking questions, as well as telling students about starting his own company at a young age.

Foster gave Linney a tour of the Capitol building, and she met House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California.

“The meeting with Nancy Pelosi struck me very seriously,” Linney said. “We had a nice five-minute conversation, specifically about technology and coding and getting Internet access for schools everywhere.”

When it came to the president’s address, Linney said she started clapping when Barack Obama briefly mentioned coding in conjunction with careers for students.

“He was very far away,” Linney said. But she realized she was just 15 feet away from first lady Michelle Obama when she noticed cameras flashing in her direction.

“It really still is kind of crazy,” she said.

She said the experience was “just so surreal.”

CREST HILL – With a flat tire and arriving late to work, Tara Linney didn’t have the greatest start to her day Jan. 13.

But that bad luck perhaps set up the Richland School District 88a educator for a big surprise later in the day, when she got a call from U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville.

A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders affecting the human foot and ankle. Following his pre-medical education, he attends a school of Podiatric medicine for four years graduating with a Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine. The podiatric medical curriculum is an allopathic (traditional) medical education with an emphasis on the disorders and disease of the lower extremities. Following graduation, the new doctor of podiatric medicine may elect to pursue a one to four year residency in various specialty areas, such as foot and ankle surgery or podiatric orthopedics. LEMONT – The village of Lemont Electoral Board has determined that objections against the election petitions of Lemont Village Board candidates Kevin Cliff and Rick Ligthart were sufficient to have their names removed from the April election ballot.

The board released its written decision Thursday after hearings were held Jan. 12.

By being removed from the ballot, Cliff and Ligthart will have to run as write-in candidates if they wish to run against incumbents Debby Blatzer, Rick Sniegowski and Ron Stapleton.

The objections, filed by Stapleton, cited numerous clerical errors in the challengers’ election filing forms.

In the majority decisions written by the Electoral Board, members said errors on the candidates’ statements of economic interest made them invalid.

When signing their statements, both Cliff and Ligthart wrote the incorrect year when writing the date.

Although both candidates admitted it was an honest mistake during their hearings, the board said in its decision the error was enough to cast doubt on the accuracy of the documents.

The purpose of the statement of economic interest is to allow the public to view a candidate’s financial dealings within the calendar year they are filing election petitions.

Writing the incorrect year would mislead the public as to which year the dealings took place, the decision said.

In the case of Ligthart, the board also said that the fact that he submitted one of Cliff’s sheets of petition signatures cast doubt on the validity of his other petition signature forms.

During his hearing, Ligthart said he accidentally took one of Cliff’s petition sheets while hurriedly compiling his petition forms.

JOLIET – Claude Kern of Naperville, former chairman of the culinary arts department at Joliet Junior College, recalled how John Noe Jr. sat in his office as a prospective student and said: “I want to have your job someday.”

And that, Kern said, along with John’s overall maturity, impressed him. Many years later, John became chairman of the department. Claude was not surprised, saying John was one of the first – if not the first – non-European-trained chefs to teach culinary at JJC. “John was always a hardworking, very straight guy,” Claude said, “He did not drink; he did not smoke; he did not mess around with anything.

His family and his teaching career always came first, and that’s the kind of person he was.”

John was 78 when he died Jan. 18. Jan Larsen of Joliet was the Living editor for The Herald-News and co-chairwoman of JJC’s Classical 100 scholarship dinner when she met John.

Jan admired John’s extensive knowledge of wine, the exciting things he did with food before the celebrity chef era and the down-to-earth way he related to people.

“He was a good man and a good chef,” Jan said.

Jeannine Noe, John’s wife, believes John’s interest in culinary stemmed from two experiences. One was working as a manager for food stores Kroger and National. It was because John opened the Joliet Kroger that he and Jeannine moved to Joliet from Chicago, she said.

When Jeannine spent a year in Normal finishing her education degree, she took the couple’s third- and fourthgrade children with her. John and their eighth-grader stayed home. Out of necessity, John had to cook and discovered he loved it, she said.

“In the fall of 1971, when I had graduated, he got started in the culinary arts program, which had just opened,” Jeannine said. “He was one of seven that had enrolled.”

During his school years, John attended classes by day and worked in restaurants at night, Jeannine said.

After graduation, John taught a culinary program geared toward boys for the Valley View Community Unit School District 365-U in Romeoville. A few years later, John began teaching at JJC. He served as head of the culinary department from the late 1980s until his retirement in 1994, Jeannine said.

Although John was a good husband, father, friend, chef and teacher, Jeannine believes he will be remembered most for two traits.

“He was a hard-working man,” Jeannine said, “and he did not give up.”

Lynda S. Galvan (nee Koltes), age 64, passed away Friday, January 23, 2015, at home with her family by her side following a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Lynda enjoyed visiting Key West every year and deep sea fishing.

She was also an avid collector of all things special and beautiful. She

DORIS J. HUBBS Doris Jeannette Hubbs, (Nee DeGroodt), age 91, late of Lockport, passed away peacefully January 23, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born in Cornell IL, moved to Joliet to attend Silver Cross School of Nursing. Upon graduating Nursing School, she worked at Silver Cross Hospital for 44 years, retiring in 1989 after being House Supervisor on midnights for many years. Doris was President of the Silver Cross Alumnae Association for many years, and looked forward to planning the annual reunion banquet and seeing old classmates and friends. She treasured every note, card and letter that was sent to her from alumnae of all classes.

She was extremely proud of her

years of service and grateful for the training received at the School of Nursing. Doris was humbled and honored to have a Scholarship Fund established in her name for continuing education of nurses.

She was active in Will County Kings Daughters having served as County President various times over the years. Doris was active at First Methodist Church of Lockport and baked many a biscuit for the annual Chicken Ala King dinner.

She loved her family and her many close friends she had over the years. Doris loved to travel and visited most every state. She also loved gardening, baking and making jams from any fruit she could get ahold of.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Merl, in 1991; her parents, John and Verdena (Iverson); and her sister, Evelyn.

Survived by her children, Jim (Lauri) and Don of Lockport, Cindy (Mark) Schultz of Crest Hill. Grandchildren Josh and Jeremy Redmon, Nikki Hubbs and Suzanne Schultz; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Doris’ family would like to thank Pat and Chris for keeping watch over her these past few years, Dr. Catherine Baker for all of her care for so many years and Silver Cross Hospital and Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Illinois ‘fracking’ off to slow start amid oil-price slump

ST. LOUIS – The oil and gas drilling technique known as “fracking,” once trumpeted as a job-creating boon for southern Illinois, is off to a feeble start in the state as slumping oil prices and the rigors of Illinois’ new regulations have energy interests cautiously waiting on the sidelines.

Two months after a legislative panel approved long-awaited rules for high-volume hydraulic fracturing, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said only Denver-based Strata-X has registered with the state to pursue such drilling. No one has applied for a permit yet.

The lack of immediate movement contrasts sharply with a land rush in recent years in southern Illinois, where energy interests spent millions snapping up oil and mineral leases spanning hundreds of thousands of acres in anticipation of a shot at the area’s oil and natural gas deposits. Fracking proponents were banking on the industry producing tens of thousands of jobs in a region that long has had some of the state’s highest jobless rates.

But a downdraft on oil prices has left investors fidgety.

Compounding matters is the need to sort through the state’s new regulations – which the industry and environmental groups helped negotiate – as well as threats of lawsuits by Illinois fracking foes hoping to block or at least modify the drilling practice, which they consider risky to humans and the environment.

KENOSHA, Wis. – Police say 11 people were hurt but none seriously when a bus crashed on Interstate 94 in southeastern Wisconsin.

The Kenosha County sheriff’s office said the coach-style commercial bus was returning from Milwaukee to the Chicago area when the driver suffered an apparent medical condition and collapsed about 11:30 p.m.

Saturday.

The bus, carrying 34 passengers, was going about 60 mph when it drifted into a concrete wall along the freeway’s right shoulder, striking the wall two or three times before coming to rest.

Authorities said a passenger took the wheel after realizing the driver was no longer in his seat.

The 68-year-old driver was admitted to a Kenosha hospital.

The driver was cooperative with the investigation and was not ticketed.

Eleven passengers were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Chicago police find 386 pounds of marijuana in SUV

CHICAGO – A man got more than a ticket during a traffic stop when Chicago police discovered 386 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $1 million inside an SUV he was driving.

The traffic stop happened shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday in the city’s North Austin neighborhood. Police say that when officers tried to pull over 37-year-old James Hargett of Chicago, he allegedly drove off before he jumped from the vehicle and ran away. Police later found Hargett hiding under a porch and arrested him.

For the traffic stop, Hargett was charged with three traffic citations and a driving an uninsured vehicle. The discovery of the marijuana resulted in a felony charge of cannabis possession.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.

Airlines cancel 85 flights at O’Hare amid wet snow

CHICAGO – More than 85 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport as a sloppy mixture of snow and rain fell in the Chicago area.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said Sunday that 85 flights were canceled as of 7:30 a. m., although the rest of the flight operations were normal.

Midway International Airport was operating normally with no cancelations.

The National Weather Service said the Chicago area was expected to get about an inch of snow or less by late Sunday afternoon.

Metra considers allowing small pets on trains

CHICAGO – Metra is considering launching a three-month test run to allow small pets on its trains.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported the commuter rail service’s advisory group on Friday approved a proposal permitting small pets in enclosed carriers on the Rock Island line.

Metra’s board of director is expected to vote on the proposal in February.

The move follows a petition drive by an Aurora woman.

Rhonda Church said welcoming pets would be good for both pets and riders and improve traffic congestion.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis says pet carriers would have to be kept on passengers’ laps or under seats.

He noted service animals assisting people with disabilities are currently allowed on trains at all times.

GLENDIVE, Mont. – Sonar indicates part of an underground pipeline that spilled almost 40,000 gallons of oil into Montana’s Yellowstone River and fouled a local water supply is exposed on the riverbed.

The pipeline is exposed for about 50 feet near where the breach occurred Jan. 17, according to a news release from public agencies involved with the response.

The pipeline had been buried at least 8 feet under the riverbed, and the depth was last confirmed in September 2011.

The cause of the spill remains under investigation. It prompted a five-day shutdown of drinking water services for 6,000 people in the city of Glendive after oil got into a treatment plant.

‘Birdman’ tops SAG Awards

The backstage farce “Birdman” topped the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Award, winning best ensemble cast, even though its star, Michael Keaton, was upset

by Eddie Redmayne in the most outstanding actor category.

Keaton led the “Birdman” cast, including Emma Stone, Edward Norton and Zach Galifianakis, in accepting the top honor from the acting guild, calling the profession “the ultimate team sport.”

MIAMI – Miss Colombia Paulina Vega has been crowned Miss Universe in Miami, beating out contestants from 88 other countries.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha were the runners-up during Sunday’s competition in Miami.

Vega is from Barranquilla, Colombia and is studying business administration. She said the contests leading to Miss Universe were the first she’d participated in and will be her last as she’s eager to return to her studies in business administration.

The 22-year-old is the granddaughter of a legendary tenor, Gastón Vega.

By YURAS KARMANAU The Associated Press KIEV, Ukraine – Ukraine’s president said Sunday that intercepted radio and telephone conversations prove that Russia-backed separatists were responsible for firing the rockets that pounded the southeastern city of Mariupol and killed at least 30 people.

The attack on Mariupol, a strategically situated port city that had been relatively quiet for months, alarmed the West and looked likely further to aggravate relations with Russia.

Putting the blame squarely on Moscow, President Barack Obama said the U.S. would work with its European partners to “ratchet up the pressure on Russia.”

European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini later announced that EU foreign ministers would hold an “extraordinary” meeting in Brussels on Thursday to discuss Ukraine. Diplomats

said the U.N. Security Council would meet Monday afternoon on Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking separately with Mogherini and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, told them the Ukrainian government bore responsibility for the latest military escalation, according to statements released by his ministry. Lavrov did not, however, directly address who had carried out the attack on Mariupol and said that it should be investigated.

Separatist leader Alexander Zakharchenko initially announced that his forces had begun an offensive on the government-controlled city of Mariupol. But after the extent of civilian casualties became known, he backtracked and blamed Ukrainian forces for Saturday’s carnage.

The rocket attack came a day after the rebels rejected a peace deal and announced they were going on a multipronged offensive against the

Kiev government in a bid to seize more territory. The rebel stance has upended European attempts to mediate an end to the fighting in eastern Ukraine that has cost at least 5,100 lives since April, according to United Nations estimates.

“The intercepted radio and telephone conversations, which were given to me by Ukraine’s security services, irrefutably prove that the attack was conducted by the terrorists, who, unfortunately, are supported by Russia,” President Petro Poroshenko said during a meeting of his Security Council.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation’s monitoring mission said Saturday that the Grad and Uragan rockets that hit Mariupol were fired from areas under rebel control. The OSCE said its Permanent Council would meet Monday in Vienna “in light of the rapid deterioration of the situation in eastern Ukraine.”

Blizzard expected for stretch of Northeast

By VERENA DOBNIK The Associated Press NEW YORK – A “potentially historic” storm could dump 2 to 3 feet of snow from northern New Jersey to southern Maine starting Monday, crippling a region that has largely been spared so far this winter, the National Weather Service said.

A blizzard warning was issued for a 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, including New York and Boston, and the National Weather Service said the massive storm would bring heavy snow, powerful winds and widespread coastal flooding starting Monday and through Tuesday.

“This could be a storm the likes of which we have never seen before,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference Sunday.

De Blasio held up a piece of paper showing the city’s top 10 snowstorms and said this one could land at the top of a list that goes back to 1872, including the 26.9 inches that fell in 2006. “Don’t underestimate this storm. Prepare for the worst,” he said as he urged residents to plan to leave work early Monday.

Boston is expected to get 18

to 24 inches of snow, with up to 3 feet west of the city, and Philadelphia could see 14 to 18 inches, the weather service said.

“We do anticipate very heavy snowfall totals,” said Bob Oravec, lead forecaster with the weather service in College Park, Maryland. “In addition to heavy snow, with blizzard warnings, there’s a big threat of high, damaging winds, and that will be increasing Monday into Tuesday. A lot of blowing, drifting and such.”

Wind gusts of 75 mph or more are possible for coastal areas of Massachusetts, and up to 50 mph further inland, Oravec said.

Airlines prepared to shut down operations along the East Coast, leading to the expected cancellation of about 1,200 flights scheduled for Monday, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

A weekend storm that had brought snow and slush to the Northeast – the first real snow of the season for many areas – was just a warm-up.

“Looks like our luck is about to run out,” said John Paulsen as he gassed up his SUV in New Jersey. “I can’t complain too much since we’ve had a pretty

mild winter, but I don’t know if I’m ready for a foot or so of snow all at once.”

The storm system driving out of the Midwest brought several inches of snow to Ohio on Sunday and was expected to ultimately spread from the nation’s capital to Maine for a “crippling and potentially historic blizzard,” the National Weather Service said.

The Washington area expected only a coating or a bit more, with steadily increasing amounts as the storm plods its way north.

Preparations large and small were in effect elsewhere in New York. A Manhattan Home Depot store sold about twice as many shovels over the weekend as it normally does, and transit officials hoping to keep the subways running smoothly planned to use modified subway cars loaded with de-icing fluid to spray the third rail that powers trains.

The Super Bowl-bound New England Patriots also expected to be out – as in out of town – by the time the storm arrives in Boston. The team plans to leave Logan Airport at 12:30 p.m.

CHICAGO – With virtually no hard proof that medical marijuana benefits sick children, and evidence that it may harm developing brains, the drug should only be used for severely ill kids who have no other treatment option, the nation’s most influential pediatricians group says in a new policy.

Some parents insist that medical marijuana has cured their kids’ troublesome seizures or led to other improvements, but the American Academy of Pediatrics’ new policy says rigorous research is needed to verify those claims.

To make it easier to study and develop marijuana-based treatments, the group recommends removing marijuana from the

government’s most restrictive drug category, which includes heroin, LSD and other narcotics with no accepted medical use, and switching it to the category which includes methadone and oxycodone.

The recommended switch “could help make a big difference in promoting more research,” said Dr. Seth Ammerman, the policy’s lead author and a professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Stanford University.

The academy’s qualified support may lead more pediatricians to prescribe medical marijuana, but the group says pediatric use should only be considered “for children with life-limiting or severely debilitating conditions and for whom current therapies are inadequate.”

Obama seeks bigger wilderness designation in Alaska refuge

By BECKY BOHRER and JIM KUHNHENN The Associated Press JUNEAU, Alaska – President Barack Obama is proposing to designate the vast majority of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a wilderness area, including its potentially oil-rich coastal plain, drawing an angry response from top state elected officials who see it as a land grab by the federal government.

“They’ve decided that today was the day that they were going to declare war on Alaska. Well, we are ready to engage,” said U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and chair of the Senate energy committee.

The designation would set aside an additional nearly 12.3 million acres as wilderness, including the coastal plain near Alaska’s

northeast corner, giving it the highest degree of federal protection available to public lands. More than 7 million acres of the refuge currently are managed as wilderness.

The refuge’s coastal plain has long been at the center of the struggle between conservationists and advocates of greater energy exploration in the U.S. Political leaders in Alaska have supported allowing for exploration and production within the coastal plain. They have opposed attempts to further restrict development on federal lands, which comprise about twothirds of the state, including within the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.

FBI: Hunt continuing for suspect in bomb threats against airliners The ASSOCIATED PRESS ATLANTA – Federal law enforcement officials are continuing to pursue a suspect after recent bomb threats targeted two jets bound for Atlanta, prompting F-16 fighter jets to escort the planes, an FBI agent said Sunday.

“We certainly take these types of threats seriously and we’re pursuing them aggressively,” Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent

Stephen Emmett told The Associated Press, a day after the threats were made.

“We are continuing to pursue leads in the efforts to locate this individual,” Emmett said.

Airport officials said Saturday’s threats targeted Southwest Airlines Flight 2492, which arrived at Atlanta from Milwaukee; and Delta Air Lines Flight 1156, which arrived from Portland, Oregon. No bombs were found in

searches of both planes after they landed safely Saturday in Atlanta.

The threats had been posted on the social media network Twitter, said Preston Schlachter, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

After being alerted, military officials dispatched two F-16 fighter jets from a base in South Carolina to escort the commercial aircraft to Atlanta.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – In fierce fighting Sunday that killed more than 200 combatants, Nigerian troops clashed with Islamic extremists who attacked Maiduguri, the biggest city in northeastern Nigeria, from three fronts.

At the same time, the insurgents continued scorchedearth attacks on villages some 125 miles to the south in Adamawa state, slitting throats of residents, looting and burning homes and abducting dozens of trapped women and children, according to Vandu Kainu and other escaping survivors.

Adamawa state legislator Adamu Kamale appealed for troops to protect civilians in Michika, where six villages are under attack. “The attacks have continued since Friday with no presence of security operatives,” he complained.

The multiple attacks come as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital nearly 1,000 miles southwest of Maiduguri, to encourage peaceful elections on Feb. 14 in Africa’s most populous country.

“This will be the largest democratic election on the continent,” Kerry said. “Given the stakes, it’s absolutely critical that these elections be conducted peacefully – that they

are credible, transparent and accountable.”

Kerry met with President Goodluck Jonathan and his chief rival candidate, former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari. Kerry told reporters afterward that he won pledges from both to refrain from violence.

He also issued a warning: Anyone responsible for inciting post-election mayhem will be barred entry to the United States, where millions of Nigerians live.

Kerry promised more U.S. support in the fight against Boko Haram if the elections take place peacefully and democratically.

More than 800 people were killed in northern protests after Buhari, a Muslim northerner, lost 2011 elections to Jonathan, a Christian from the south.

Boko Haram has denounced democracy and wants to make an Islamic state of Nigeria, whose population of about 170 million is divided almost equally between Muslims in the north and Christians in the south.

In Maiduguri, troops blocked roads into the city, which also prevented civilians from escaping.

Minooka coach Scott Tanaka made an interesting comment following his boys basketball team’s 66-65 victory Friday night at Plainfield North.

“In my opinion, Joe [Butler] is the best player in our conference,” he said.

Discussion of the best players in the Southwest Prairie always includes the big-name seniors – Plainfield North’s Trevor Stumpe and Plainfield East’s Aaron Jordan – but usually not Butler, a 6-foot-1 junior who is quite a baseball player.

However, the more you see of him on the basketball floor, the more you see what he does for the Indians (11-12, 4-4) on both ends of the floor, and the more you understand why Tanaka feels the way he does.

“So that’s how [Pace] got my attention early. When this came up, he was very high on my list, but I’d never met him. I talked to him on the telephone a couple times before his interview. And then he came in for his interview and we – all three of us [George McCaskey and Ted Phillips] – really liked him.

“You could see he was ready.

I look at him, and you know I probably couldn’t do the job today, there’s too much technology that leaves me behind. He’s very modern, cutting edge, and the way they use computers and everything. But the one thing I noticed about him is he’s got a

throwback soul to him. He cares about tradition, he cares about history – and those are rare things today.”

Accorsi’s connection to John Fox is well known. But if he expected Fox to be available, he said absolutely not.

“No. I heard rumors, but I did not [believe them], actually,” he said. “When I was watching the [Colts] game, I never thought, ‘Gee, I’m glad they lost, maybe he’s going to get fired.’ That never entered my mind.”

Accorsi agrees with Pace that it wasn’t hard to jump once Fox hit the market. “I saw Ryan’s comment, which was very accurate,” he said. “When

he became available, that was a game-changer for us.”

Still, Accorsi says Fox getting the job was no sure thing.

“When he became available, there were six jobs open,” Accorsi said. “I knew it was going to be very competitive. There was no question in my mind I’d recommend him, but the other three people didn’t know him.

“When he came in, it clicked with Ryan right away, and George and Ted liked him, too.

Of course, it was the old John Fox to me, his office [Giants] was right next to mine, so I knew him very, very well. But they had to feel comfortable with him. Then Ryan went out himself for a second interview in Denver and that’s when they pretty much had a conviction.”

Accorsi can’t be more grateful for being allowed to help put this new Bears management team together.

“I told those guys, ‘Thanks for making me a Bear; I’m going to be a Bear for life now.’ ” After Part II, you will understand why that’s so important to him.

Accorsi had Bears link dating back to college, Piccolo BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush A significant majority of Bears fans have spent the past week or two celebrating their belief that, this time around, the McCaskeys have gotten it right in retooling the leadership of their football operation.

The difference between this and their past four attempts over the past 23 years is the stewardship of Ernie Accorsi.

The former general manager of the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants has served as a consultant to the NFL since his retirement after the 2007 season.

About 13 years ago, Accorsi and I became friendly after the loss of a close mutual friend and, when we sat down to visit about the arrival in Ryan Pace and John Fox in Chicago and his part in the process, he explained the details of his consulting relationship with the NFL and something else I didn’t know.

He also was a good college buddy of Brian Piccolo, a protégé early in his career of George Halas, and he had long dreamed of working with the Bears.

Before this, Accorsi had assisted the Atlanta Falcons in the hiring of Thomas Dimitroff and consulted the Carolina Panthers on the hiring of Dave Gettleman as their general managers.

“I did that, that [Panthers] was two years ago and it was a lot of work,” Accorsi said. “Not as much work as this. This was pretty intense and I did it, to be honest with you, not to be patronizing but I did it because it was the Bears.”

His first connection to the Bears was Piccolo.

“Brian and I were in the same dorm at Wake Forest, Davis Dorm.” With a bit of a snicker, Accorsi added, “You know I loved the movie, but James Caan wasn’t Brian. You know, Brian was so humble. I mean, he had a wit, but you had to almost say, ‘What did you say?’ to get the wit out because he was so quiet.”

Accorsi recalls one of the benefits of being friends with Piccolo.

“There were about probably 10 Catholics on campus at Wake Forest in 1961,” he said. “You know, I went there because I thought I was going to be a bigshot golfer, and it turned out I couldn’t make the team.

“You had to hitchhike to

Mass. It was tough to get a ride, but people would take a shortcut through campus to get to the other side of town. So I always asked Piccolo, ‘You know, what Mass are you going to?’ because people, you know, would skid to a stop when they saw him, so I’d be able to get a ride.”

Here is another one of Accorsi’s favorite Piccolo stories: “Freshmen had their own schedule, were not eligible for varsity, and they played Friday nights,” Accorsi said. “So, I’m sitting on a chair and he’s sitting on the bed in the fall of ’61 and he says his ankle’s all swollen, he can’t even get his shoe on, and he says, ‘This is the first time I’ve ever been hurt in my life, and I knew I was going to get hurt.’ I said, ‘What do you mean you knew you were going to get hurt?’ He said, ‘Because I ate meat on Friday for the first time in my life.’

“Now, you know he didn’t say it as a joke. He did it in almost a child-like way and he was just the sweetest guy in the world. He just never changed.

ers, but we were pretty good friends.”

Accorsi said that, when the chance to consult for the Bears came, it was a pretty easy call.

“I’m just very historically conscious,” he said. “You know, I walked in that office [Halas Hall] every day and saw all those retired numbers, I saw Brian’s up there, and it just meant a lot to me, so that’s why I did it.”

Additionally, there was his admiration of Papa Bear.

“When I worked at the league office, my title was assistant to the president of the NFC. Those jobs don’t exist any more, and I worked for [Pete] Rozelle, but you know George Halas was the president. It was a ceremonial position, basically, but he would do check presentations and hand out the trophy.

“Well, one day we took a car over to Sloan-Kettering and it was 1975. Ed McCaskey was in the back seat, I was in the back seat, and Mr. Halas was in the front to make a check presentation for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund to Dr. Ted Beatti, who was Brian’s doctor at SloanKettering.

“I was in the background, I just stood there with Ed and he [Halas] was talking to Beatti

and they made the presentation.

Halas was in the front seat going back and he was very quiet.

Then he turned around to us and said, ‘I talked to Dr. Beatti, they could have cured Brian today,’ and tears were coming down his eyes.

“You know, he’d ask me about Brian and what he was like and everything and I said, ‘You know, I didn’t see all that busting the chops personality. He was so quiet and humble then.’ “ ... [A]ll that really added to it when the Bears called.”

In large part, it might have meant so much to Accorsi as much because of Halas as Piccolo. “‘You know, Mr. Halas, I was a nobody, I was as low as you could get on the totem pole with Rozelle [working in the league office] and he [Halas] took a special interest in me because of Piccolo. So, I said, ‘You know, if I’m not going to do this any more, this would be a great one to go out on.’ ” An awful lot of Bears fans are glad the Bears and Accorsi found each other again.

Wade, Bosh and Whiteside lead Heat over sluggish Bulls

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Hassan Whiteside bounced around the NBA Development league and played in China and Lebanon, hoping NBA teams were keeping tabs and would give him an opportunity.

He was in Charlotte, working out at the downtown YMCA, a few months ago. He then got his chance with the Heat, and he’s making the most of it.

Whiteside had an unconventional triple-double with a career high 12 blocks to go with 14 points and 13 rebounds Sunday to help Miami beat the sluggish Bulls, 96-84.

“It’s a blessing. Like I told my teammates, you won’t believe how things work out in life,” said Whiteside, who signed with Miami in late November. “Three months ago, I was at the downtown Y just

chilling, working on my game.

I couldn’t get a team to pick up the phone.”

On Sunday, he made the Bulls miserable. His teammates did their part, too. Dwyane Wade scored 26 points, and Chris Bosh finished with 20.

Luol Deng scored 15 in his return to the Bulls. Mario Chalmers had 15 points, and the Heat squashed whatever momentum the Bulls appeared to be building after beating San Antonio and Dallas.

Miami led by 10 at halftime, 12 going into the fourth quarter and remained in control the rest of the way.

Wade and Bosh came through with strong performances. Deng had 10 rebounds and four assists in his first game at the United Center since the Bulls traded him to Cleveland last season. And Whiteside wreaked all kinds of havoc in just 24 minutes af-

ter missing two games with a sprained right ankle.

Pau Gasol had 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Bulls, giving him 50 over the past three games. Derrick Rose scored 19 for the Bulls but missed all six 3-pointers.

Aaron Brooks scored 17. But the Bulls fell to 13-11 at home.

It was not what the Bulls had in mind after handing the Spurs their most lopsided loss of the season Thursday at the United Center and winning at Dallas the next night. Those two wins on the heels of a 2-6 slide seemed like strong signals they were coming around. But this was a big step back.

For Team Foligno, the Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos had two goals and an assist apiece, Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists, and Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin added three assists.

Captain Nick Foligno, also of Columbus, was asked what he learned from being a captain of the team he helped pick.

“How to handle 20 egos,” he cracked. “That’s probably the hardest thing. But it’s fun in the role of showing off our team and our city.”

The fake fight provided some energy to a capacity

crowd of 18,901 on the game’s first visit to Columbus. Late in the second period, during a scrum in front of the net, Ovechkin and Foligno pretended to mix it up with Calgary’s Mark Giordano and the Blackhawks’ Brent Seabrook.

All of the players were laughing after they grabbed and hugged each other.

It was fitting that Toews scored the goal that shattered the record. He held off defenseman Brent Burns of San Jose to find the net with a rising shot with 5:39 left.

Toews said he was just happy to silence the cannon that fires every time the home team scores at Nationwide Arena.

“It’s loud enough that it gets on your nerves pretty quickly and especially when they score 12 or so goals,” he said. “It gets you a little bit.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was enough to give a goalie nightmares: A record 29 goals, 25 players with at least two points and eight with at least four.

In addition to the high-profile superstars who didn’t make it to Ohio’s capital city for the NHL All-Star game, defense also took a holiday.

John Tavares of the New York Islanders matched a record with four goals Sunday night, and Team Toews beat Team Foligno, 17-12, in the highest-scoring NHL All-Star game.

“We had so many good players on each team,” said Philadelphia Flyers forward Jake Voracek, who tied another record with six points. “There’s going to be a lot of goals.”

How much offense was there? Tavares wasn’t even the MVP, although that might have been because of a little home cooking. Ryan Johansen of the host Columbus Blue Jackets had two goals and two assists for the losing side and was selected as the MVP in voting by fans on Twitter.

Tavares was as gracious about the balloting as he was good on the ice.

“I didn’t come to the game trying to get the car,” said Tavares, referring to the prize given to the MVP. “You get four goals, and obviously you think you have an opportunity. But Ryan had a good game. He had a couple of nice goals, made some nice plays.”

Johansen, a budding star for the Blue Jackets, was touched by the smiles of the fans he encountered all week.

“It’s meant a lot, being a part of it – seeing the fans and how much they’ve been enjoying all the festivities,” he said. “We did a two-hour [autograph] signing. Everybody just seemed to be having a

By DAVID GINSBURG The Associated Press COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Melo Trimble scored 27 points, and a tip-in by Dez Wells with 1.4 seconds left capped a furious comeback that enabled No. 13 Maryland to squeeze past Northwestern, 68-67, on Sunday night.

The Terrapins (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten) never led until Trimble made two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to make it 66-65. After Tre Demps hit a jumper for the Wildcats, Trimble missed a 3-point try, and Wells snared the rebound before scoring with a layup off the glass.

There were several times during the game when it seemed Maryland was doomed to its first losing streak of the season. The Terrapins trailed by 14 in the first half by 63-52 with 3:46 left.

But Trimble and Wells led the Terps back, with help from a 3-pointer by Jake Layman that cut the gap to 65-62 with 1:05 to go.

Trimble went 9 for 10 at the foul line, and Wells scored 17 for the Terrapins, who improved to 3-0 following a defeat.

As we all know, defense is the hardest part of the game. Some players, when the declarer, carefully count losers and winners, and work out a sensible line of play. But as soon as they go on defense, they stop thinking and play the first card that comes into their minds.

No doubt you do not fit this picture, but your partner is a textbook example. So this week we are going to try to help your partner’s defense, which will greatly improve your results.

There are a few important “rules” to follow. Which one does this deal highlight?

West is on lead against four hearts. Which card should he choose?

North’s four clubs was a splinter bid. It announced four-card heart support, at least game-going values and a singleton or void in clubs.

West apparently has two sensible leads: the diamond queen and spade two. However, the dummy surely has at least five diamonds. With 4-4 in the red suits, North would almost certainly have responded one heart, not one diamond. Also, not leading an opponent’s suit will be right most of the time. West should select the low spade. And here is the key point: When leading a suit partner has not bid, a low card from length guarantees at least one honor in that suit.

Here, therefore, when declarer plays dummy’s spade nine, East should win the trick with his jack.

The only honor East cannot see is the king, and West must have it. Next, East cashes his spade ace and leads another spade. Then, he waits for the setting trick from his trump holding.

PDE5 inhibitors – medicines such as sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra) and tadalafil (Cialis) – are normally used to treat erectile dysfunction, but they also improve BPH symptoms.

Before starting a medication, try the following lifestyle changes. They can help relieve symptoms and may take away the need for medication: • When you urinate, empty your bladder completely. This will reduce the need for return trips to the toilet. Be patient. In men with BPH, it’s very common for the stream of urine to stop temporarily, as if you have emptied your bladder completely.

But if you wait a bit, you may notice that urination starts again.

• Talk with your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications. Some, such as antihistamines and decongestants, may interfere with urination.

• Avoid drinking fluids in the evening, particularly caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Both can lead to nighttime urination.

• Reduce stress. Exercise regularly and practice relaxation techniques such as meditation.

All of the medicines I discussed above are new since I went to medical school. As a result of research, men get better relief from their BPH symptoms today.

Dear Doctor K: Can you discuss medications to treat BPH? Dear Reader: Around the time of a man’s 50th birthday, his prostate begins to grow. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is not cancer, and it does not lead to cancer. However, BPH causes bothersome symptoms in about half of men with the condition.

As the prostate gets bigger, it starts to press against the urethra and the bladder, like fingers pinching a straw. This pressure eventually obstructs the flow of urine. It forces the bladder to squeeze harder to push urine through the urethra. Like any muscle, the bladder wall becomes thicker with work. That thickness reduces the amount of urine the bladder can hold.

All of these changes can lead to symptoms that include: • a hesitant, interrupted or weak urine stream; • a sudden and urgent need to urinate (a feeling that a man can’t hold it); • leaking or dribbling of the urine; • a sense of incomplete emptying; • more frequent urination, especially at night.

If your symptoms start to interfere with your dayto-day life, your doctor can prescribe medication. Surgical options are available, but your doctor is likely to recommend medication first.

Three types of drugs are available to treat BPH: • alpha blockers • 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors • a PDE5 inhibitor These drugs work in different ways to improve symptoms, and they often work well in combination.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips ous family members have offered to teach him. But his nonchalant attitude toward learning has made everyone give up.

We live in a big city with poor public transportation, and his job is far from home.

Catching the bus to work is unsafe and takes hours, and daily cab fare isn’t cost effective. We know his parents aren’t happy transporting him back and forth, and we think they need to push him toward more independence. His social life is limited to family events, and dating is out of the question.

We worry about what will happen as his parents are getting older, and none of us plan on assuming the responsibility of transporting him. Any suggestions? –

Dear Concerned Aunt: How do you know the parents aren’t happy about transporting him? Have they said it? If so, the next time they vent, tell them you’re concerned about their son and why. He may have additional problems that you are unaware of. He may simply be a late bloomer or have no incentive to be independent because his parents are happy with him snug in their nest.

However, if this is the elephant in the room that no one – including the parents – wants to acknowledge, keep mum because if you don’t, you will be resented for it.

Dear Abby: We have a couple of daughters who have told us we must take off our shoes if we visit them (and our beautiful grandchildren). Although I’m not sure of their reasons for this, I do know for sure that we have never tracked any kind of dirt into their house when we visited. In fact, our shoes are always clean.

I have very sensitive feet.

I cannot even walk outside barefoot. On top of that, my feet get cold if they aren’t covered. I have always worn house slippers at home if I didn’t have shoes on.

In a discussion with my wife, I suggested that their request was both inconsiderate and disrespectful. I also said they should provide alternatives to shoes for visitors if they expect guests to remove their shoes. What is the proper etiquette in a situation like this? – Cold Feet in Iowa Dear Cold Feet: A person does not have to track “dirt” into a house to carry germs on the soles of one’s shoes.

If guests have walked on a sidewalk or driveway where someone has walked a dog or spat, then I can see why a parent might want shoes removed if children play on the floor.

Good manners in a case like this would be to cheerfully cooperate with your hosts and, if slippers are not provided, to bring a pair over that you can leave for the next time you visit. It’s a small price to pay for spending time with your beautiful grandchildren.
