By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Township Park District Executive Director Garrett Peck resigned Thursday, saying he has become a “lightning rod in the community.”

Peck sent a letter of resignation to the board of commissioners about 4 p.m on a day in which he was already answering questions about a state order to reinstate a worker who had been fired – the latest in a series of a controversies since Peck took the job in May. In his resignation letter, Peck said he took the position “in a controversial manner, which made it extremely difficult to function with the entire board and the community.”

Peck said he will not seek severance or payout from his contract.

“I had a lot of great ideas that will not be able to move forward as a result,” Peck wrote in his letter, listing accomplishments that included savings on health insurance for employees, a shuttle bus with a wheelchair lift, plans for an indoor soccer facility, a veterans program, and more than $1.5 million in additional revenue to expand services.

Gene Coldwater, recently named the assistant executive director by Peck, will become the interim director while the board chooses a replacement.

Nugent and Wendi Calabrese, saying it was an honor to work with them.

He also apologized to the local Republican Party.

He declined to comment further on his resignation.

“I’m somewhat relieved because he was a problem for the district,” Commissioner Larry Newton said. “But the board members that hired him are still there.”

Newton said the board has a lot to do to find a long-term solution to the executive director position. Emails and calls to other comGarrett Peck missioners were not returned Thursday.

Peck, a Plainfield village trustee, was brought in to the park district as secretary on May 8 by a new board majority composed of President Peter Hurtado, Vice President Janet Silosky and Commissioner Peter Steinys.

Three days later, the board hired him as executive director over Cameron Bettin, the superintendent of planning, who had been pegged by the old board to be the new director.

Returning commissioners Newton and Mary Kay Ludemann voted against Peck’s hiring.

The most recent controversy were the resignations of Bettin and employee James Less, who left their jobs with

severance pay and a signed agreement prohibiting them from saying anything negative about park district leadership.

Peck said the move was part of a plan to oursource the planning work that had been done by Bettin and Less.

Critics said the resignations were forced.

Peck on Monday promoted Coldwater to assistant executive director, assigning him the same duties Bettin had except for planning services.

Then Peck had a run-in Tuesday with the Plainfield Patch online media outlet. In response to a request for information, Peck said he would cease communication with Patch because of its story selection and comment policies.

Hurtado, according to Patch, sent an apology on Wednesday, saying Peck’s “remarks were uncalled for and in no way keeping with the standard of respectful communication that we all need to live by.”

Village trustee Jim Racich was one of the outspoken critics of the new board and Peck’s administration.

“I think it’s definitely for the better,” Racich said of the resignation.

Racich was kicked out of a board meeting in May for criticizing Peck.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to get an executive director that will move the district in a positive direction,” Racich said.

Racich also said it was important to involve the community because the public would feel a part of a process that seemed closed during Peck’s hire.

NEWS BRIEF Police: No abduction attempt made at elementary school ROMEOVILLE – Police say a misunderstanding led to erroneous reports a man attempted to lure a child into his vehicle Wednesday.

Plainfield School District 202 issued a news release Thursday saying a 5-yearold was approached by a stranger who told her to get into his vehicle. The incident was reported to Romeoville police.

“This turned out to be a total mis-

understanding,” Deputy Chief Steve Lucchesi said of the incident, which occurred near Tammanny and Tuscany lanes. That area is south of Lakewood Falls and Creekside elementary schools and west of Kenneth L. Hermansen Elementary School.

Lucchesi said a student’s mother was unable to pick up her daughter from school and asked her own mother to do it, which has happened before.

“The grandmother usually walks, but

since the weather turned so cold she asked her neighbor to drive her. He got out of the car telling the girl to get in and another girl who was there thought he was talking to her,” Lucchesi said.

Lucchesi said police interviewed the man, relatives, neighbors and witnesses Thursday.

“A big misunderstanding which is actually fortunate. We’ve verified there was no abduction attempt,” he said.

THE ‘VOICE’ STILL ECHOES Joliet radio legend Don Ladas laid to rest Thursday

Joliet sports radio legend Don Ladas was laid to rest Thursday.

He died Sunday at age 85 following a long battle with an illness.

“Don was known as the ‘Voice of Joliet.’ A voice that will be truly missed,” said Father Burke Masters, whose Little League and high school baseball games were called by Ladas.

“What I always remembered was that he was so respectful,” Masters said in his eulogy. “It was a privilege to be interviewed by Don.” Masters described Ladas as a man who was kind, loving, competitive, hard-working and charitable.

Ladas showed love and respect without discrimination, gave to others Don Ladas when he could and always spoke positively – both in his public and private life.

“Don gave to his family, and to all of us who knew him, a blueprint of how to live the Christian life,” Masters said. “He respected and loved everyone no matter the color of their skin. Whether or not they were the best player or the worst player on the team. Rich or poor. To Don, every single human being had dignity and he gave them the respect they deserved.”

Ladas was born Dec. 23, 1928.

He met his wife Mary Lou at WJOL-AM radio station and the two were married for 52 years.The couple had three children and seven grandchildren.

Ladas established himself as a local icon during his 54 years as a WJOL broadcaster calling local sports events. There he entered the homes and hearts of thousands of area residents.

“Don was always the most prepared person on the air,” Masters said.

Ladas hosted Ten Pin Topics, the nation’s longest-running radio bowling program. Ladas owned the Will County Sportsman, a sports publication devoted largely to bowling, for 37 years, and has been inducted into 14 halls of fame.

He briefly was a part-time sports reporter at The Herald-News before being persuaded to go for a radio job at WJOL. Ladas would later joke that all he knew about radio at the time was how to turn it on and off. But he became not only one of the radio station’s biggest radio personalities but also a high-volume ad salesman.

For decades, Ladas hosted multiple sclerosis fundraiser softball games, and occasionally would bring professional players from the Cubs and White Sox down to Joliet to play.

“The same loving and caring man that his family knew so well, was the same man that the public saw, as well,” Masters said.

“Dad taught us commitment, loyalty, humility, love, respect, charity, perseverance, dedication, inspiration,” Sheri Voss, Ladas’ daughter, said Thursday during the funeral. She read a letter she found that Ladas wrote and read when his own father passed away.

“The love that I have stored within, my speech nor pen could not begin to tell you even part of all the contents in my heart,” Voss read. “I find that all my dark, bleak days are brightened by your kindly ways.”

Masters said Ladas was a man who found the secret to life. Giving to others and staying positive found Ladas true peace, he said.

And as Ladas rests in peace, he looks down on Joliet from heaven “calling the greatest game on earth,” Masters said.

Park district ordered to take back employee

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Illinois Labor Relations Board has ordered the Plainfield Township Park District to reinstate an employee who was fired after recruiting employees into a union.

The park district was ordered to reinstate maintenance worker Joel Schumaker with back pay and interest for lost wages.

The ruling states that Garrett Peck – who resigned Thursday from his post as the district’s executive director – and Assistant Executive Director Gene Coldwater, superintendent of parks at the time, interrogated Schumaker and employee John Nickl on Aug. 15 about their involvement with the union and media.

On Aug. 23, Peck disciplined Schumaker for soliciting an employee about the union. Schumaker was then assigned different duties Sept. 3 and terminated from his position Nov. 1, the ruling states.

“We’re heartened that the labor board has ruled correctly in this case,” said Anders Lindall, a spokesman for American Federation of State County Municipal Employees Council 31, which represented Schumaker. “The park district and all employers should know that harass-

ment and intimidation of workers is unacceptable, and employees should be assured that their rights at work are protected from illegal retaliation.”

The ruling is the most recent blow to the park board and administration, which have been criticized for Peck’s appointment to executive director, the resignations of former employees Cameron Bettin and James Less, and outsourcing of the park’s planning department.

Park district Commissioner Larry Newton said all he knew about the case was that there were unionization efforts and a complaint.

“I’m extremely disappointed that we continue to put out this awful view to the public,” Newton said of the controversial decisions by Peck’s administration. “We’re hearing more [from] people now

than in the 10 years I’ve been on the board.”

The ruling orders the park district to cease and desist from retaliation or discriminating against Schumaker or any other employee for participating in a union.

It also orders the park district to rescind the decision to discipline and reassign Schumaker for soliciting employees to join unions, and re-employ Schumaker to his former position, striking any record of the stated discipline or termination from his employment file.

The park district will need to pay Schumaker back wages lost for the time missed after he was fired, including back pay and 7 percent interest.

The park district can appeal the ruling within 30 days of the decision.

Failure to comply with an initial or subsequent rul-

ing may allow the labor relations board to take legal action if needed, according to the Illinois Public Relations Act. Peck said Thursday, before he announced his resignation, that he was aware of the ruling but couldn’t discuss specifics because it was an ongoing legal matter.

The labor board judgment, filed Jan. 9, comes after the park district failed to respond within 15 days to a complaint filed Aug. 29 by AFSCME. The failure to respond to the complaint automatically implies guilt by the park district, according to the ruling.

After the 15 days expired, the park district asked for a variance to extend the responding time period. But AFSCME contended the park district can’t delay any compensation owed to Schumaker, and Administrative Law Judge Anna Hamburg-Gal agreed.

A special park district board meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in the Heritage Professional Center, 24023 W. Lockport St. The board will enter closed executive session concerning “the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal, of specific employees or legal counsel,” and litigation.

Man dies in I&M Canal snowmobile accident

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – A Channahon man died Wednesday night after his snowmobile struck a tree.

Gregory J. Mosher, 29, was following a friend on another sled about 10 p.m. when they were riding on the I&M Canal a half-mile west of Brandon Road, Police Chief Robert Dykstra said.

“The friend told us they had just made some repairs on the snowmobile and were taking it on a very brief test run,” Dykstra said.

While the other man rode on the trail, Mosher rode onto the ice where a

tree that had fallen into the canal was sticking about four feet out of the water, Dykstra said.

“He hit it with the right side of the sled and was ejected. He and the snowmobile went traveling about 40 feet in opposite directions,” Dykstra said.

Mosher’s friend called 911 with his cellphone and an ambulance took him to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Mosher was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 11:08 p.m.

Dykstra said the Illinois Conservation Police will investigate the accident. Snowmobiling is allowed on the canal trails.

Joliet hires four police and firefighters More positions could be filled

The Joliet City Council this week approved filling

four vacant positions in the police and fire departments. Both departments have struggled to maintain staffing levels after the 2008 economic downturn and city budget cuts.

City Manager James Hock said City Council members authorized hiring five police officers and filling several positions in

the fire department. But those hirings are on hold as city officials prepare to discuss the city’s strategic plan in February, he said.

Councilman Michael Turk said he knows it’s been a struggle for all city departments to maintain staffing levels and quality service.

The sessions, scheduled for the evenings of Feb. 11 and 12 at the Joliet City Fire Department’s training room, 101 E. Clinton St., are the first of many steps in developing a comprehensive, goal-oriented plan for the city.

A start time was not available as of Thursday.

Councilman Larry Hug said developing a longterm plan is by no means a progressive idea. Quite frankly, he said, it’s been a long time coming.

“We’ve never really had a plan. It’s like driving somewhere blind and we don’t have a map,” he said.

that he wanted to develop a long-term plan for the city.

Hock said he hired Craig Rapp, senior associate at the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University and president of Craig Rapp LLC as a consultant to guide the strategic planning.

Hock said his ultimate goal is to get everyone on the same page in terms of the city’s future – even if that means retro-fitting the recently approved $288 million budget. The city council approved the 2014 budget with the understanding that it would be re-examined once a threeto-five-year strategic plan was in place.

As part of the process, department heads, the mayor and council members will have opportunity to complete what is called a SWOT analysis – or an outlining of Joliet’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats,

Hock said. Those findings will be presented at the first session.

Councilman Robert O’Dekirk said Thursday he hopes council members and other stakeholders can gain some sense of direction for the growing community during the upcoming sessions.

“Joliet has a lot of offer but it hasn’t really been maximized in the last 15, 20 years,” he said. “We can be a divided council at times but I’m hoping we can gain some sense of direction, some consensus on where we should be headed.”

Her priorities include filling vacancies in the police department and maintaining appropriate staffing levels at the city’s fire department, even with a critical $2 million federal grant that is scheduled to run out later this year.

The Joliet Police Department is expected to fill in a position for a patrol officer and sergeant because of retirements.

Police Chief Brian Benton said after the economic downturn, the city faced difficult budget decisions and officials looked for ways to make cuts. Police officials were asked to make cuts internally and a buyout option was offered

for eligible officers to retire early.

Between 2009 and 2011 the buyout option was offered at different times for a number of senior officers, but a hiring freeze also was in effect, he said.

It led to vacant positions with nobody to fill them.

The number of police officers went from 302 to an estimated 240 or so at the time, he said. Currently, the department has 254 officers.

The City Council also authorized filling fire department positions for a firefighter/paramedic and EMS coordinator/ lieutenant. Both positions were vacant because of retirements.

City officials have been discussing whether they should hire eight firefighters. Fire Chief Joseph Formhals has said the city could save $220,000 a year in overtime with fire department staffed at 209.

Driver charged with DUI after fatal I-80 crash early Thursday

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The driver whose passenger died in a crash that closed Interstate 80 for hours Thursday morning was arrested for drunken driving.

Jaroslaw Mietus, 28, of Hickory Hills was arrested on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol after being treated for minor injuries at Morris Hospital, according to State Police

Master Sgt. Scott Angus.

At 5:25 a.m. Mietus was driving west in a 2000 Ford F150 pickup near Ridge Road at milepost 118 when he struck the back of a 2006 Freightline semitrailer Jaroslaw parked on Mietus the shoulder and bounced back into the path of a 2005 Lexus Rx330.

The Lexus driver, a

60-year-old Crest Hill man, and the semitrailer driver, a 40-year-old East Sparta man, also were taken to Morris Hospital and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Mietus’ passenger, Rafal M. Szczepaniak, 26, of Bridgeview, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:45 a.m., according to the Grundy County Coroner’s office.

The crash closed westbound I-80 until 10 a.m. between Ridge and Brisbin roads, Angus said.

Mokena could get indoor go-kart track

By LAUREN LEONE-CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com MOKENA – An indoor go-kart racing facility could speed its way into Mokena as early as this summer.

The closest indoor gokart facility, according to Mokena officials, is in Addison, which is about a 40-minute drive from Joliet.

Another facility is located about an hour’s drive north of Joliet in Buffalo Grove.

It’s expected to be a regional draw, from thrill-seekers stopping in the area for a quick spin around the track to businesses holding corporate and social events and local families celebrating birthdays, said Alan Zordan, director of economic and community development for Mokena.

“It’s definitely something new and fun for the area,” Zordan said. “It means a lot to us because it makes Mokena a destination. People outside the community will use that facility and while they’re in town, they might go out shopping or find something else to do.”

David and Mike Larson, of the Maryland-based company Autobahn Indoor Speedway, LLC, presented their plans Monday to the Mokena Village Board to bring a family-friendly attraction to the area. The company owns and operates an indoor go-karting facility just outside Baltimore, and is looking to open a facility in Jacksonville, Fla., and in Mokena, David Larson said.

It has a similar one just outside Baltimore. square feet, equipped with two grand prix-styled race tracks, electric-powered karts and a snack bar.

The targeted Mokena location is 9120 W. 191st St., just east of LaGrange Road.

The 300,000-square-foot building, owned by Ligo Products, Inc., is currently zoned for industrial use, which means the village board would have to grant the company a special-use permit before that space could be used for indoor recreation.

Ligo Products, Inc. would lease some of the building’s space to the company, Zordan said.

Larson said the company projects to generate about $100,000 each year in amusement tax revenue, all of which goes directly to the village.

As a procedural matter, a public hearing before the village’s planning commission is slated for Feb. 20 to

consider the special-use permit, Zordan said.

“The hearing and review by the planning commission are required because these special uses have special impacts,” he said. “With some industrial-zoned places, we do have issues with parking now and again so we typically would have to evaluate the parking situation.”

But unlike older industrial-zoned buildings, the Ligo building – built 10 to 15 years ago – has ample parking space for what is expected to be a huge regional draw, Zordan said.

If all goes as planned, the planning commission will make a recommendation to the village board. The board is expected to approve the special-use permit no earlier than late March or early April, he said. The facility could potentially be open for business by this summer.

IDR to halt ‘artificially sourced sales’ for 150 days

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – For at least 150 days, the Illinois Department of Revenue is putting a stop to what it considers “artificially sourced sales” happening in various Illinois municipalities, which could very likely include Channahon.

The IDR issued an emergency amendment Wednesday establishing new regulations that prevent municipalities from collecting sales tax revenue on sales that did not happen in a “meaningful way” within their municipal borders.

Although the emergency amendment is in effect for a minimum of 150 days, the IDR also proposed permanent rules that could replace the emergency rules, pending a review from the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules.

With the new regulations, businesses operating across multiple locations will have to pay sales tax to the municipality that houses company executives and an inventory of goods, and

is the primary location where purchase orders are accepted.

The amendment outlines several other rules regarding where and how point of sale should be determined.

“It’s not really fair if 3,000 employees work in Cook County and one employee works in Channahon, but [Channahon] get the sales tax revenue,” IDR spokeswoman Sue Hofer said. “Call me crazy, but that doesn’t seem like a fair treatment of sales tax.”

This amendment c o u l d a f f e c t C h a n n ahon, which the Regional Transportation Authority alleges has 16 or more companies routing sales transactions through small, nearly non-existent offices in the village – many listed under the same address – to take advantage of the county’s much-lower sales tax.

The RTA is involved in a lawsuit with Channahon and Kankakee, claiming that the municipalities deprived the RTA and other units of local government of several millions of dollars in legitimate tax revenue.

Channahon also entered into what it calls “Economic Development Incentive Agreements” with several of those companies in which it rebated as much as 85 percent of sales taxes revenues to the companies that paid them, according to Hofer.

Hofer said IDR feels it is unfair that the municipalities providing public services for the bulk of those companies are not getting the sales tax. Channahon President Joe Cook and Village Administrator Joe Pena said they are still in the process of interpreting the new emergency rules.

“Once we have an opinion one way or another on where we’re at with this whole thing, we’re encouraged that the [rebate program] can continue,” Pena said.

Cook said that despite the RTA’s allegations, the businesses in Channahon had employees, phones and computers, and could potentially meet the new criteria for point of sale.

Joliet library takes itself off list of warming centers

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Library no longer is listed as a warming center, but people can still come in to get warm when the weather turns frigid.

“Our role has not changed,” Library Director Kevin Medows said.

But the library no longer appears on the list of warming centers that the city puts out to advise res-

idents where they can go on icy days like Thursday, when the temperature sank to zero.

Medows said library told the city that it wanted to be off the list after a media outlet during the polar vortex at the start of January reported that the library closed for two days because of the weather – even though the two library branches were among the city’s designated shelters from the cold.

Joliet cold shelters open THE HERALD NEWS JOLIET – Warming shelters have opened in Joliet because of the cold weather.

The city has announced that people can seek shelter at the following locations: • Louis Joliet Shopping Mall from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

• Daybreak at 611 E. Cass St. for overnight.

• MorningStar Mission at 350 E. Washington St. for overnight.

The city has also issued the following advice for managing the cold weather when indoors: • Hang blankets over windows at night but let the sun shine in during the day. Cover cracks around doors with rugs, towels or newspapers.

• Make sure there is proper ventilation when using alternative heating from a fireplace, wood stove or space heater.

• If water pipes freeze, shut off water at the main source, call a plumber and your insurance agent, and do not try to thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame or torch.

Advice for outdoors includes:

• Avoid overexertion from shoveling or cold-weather tasks, which can lead to heart attacks.

Be aware of pain or tightening in the chest.

• If stranded, cover exposed body parts and seek shelter.

• Watch for signs of frostbite, including numbness and whiteness of the skin. If symptoms appear, seek medical help.

• Watch for signs of hypothermia, or low body temperature, such as slurred speech, incoherence, memory loss, disorientation, uncontrollable shivering, drowsiness, repeated stumbling and exhaustion.

Hypothermia can be fatal. If body temperature falls below 95 degrees, seek medical attention.

Immediate treatment for hypothermia includes warming the body slowly with dry clothing and a warm blanket around the head and neck. Warm the core body first. Do not warm arms and legs first, which can cause cold blood to flow to the heart and lead to heart failure. Warm broth is helpful, but do not use alcohol, drugs, coffee or any hot beverage.

“Shelter” is the wrong word, Medows said, because it suggests the library is supposed to be open on frigid days.

“That’s a key point that needs to be made,” Medows said. “The library is not a shelter. We were always under the agreement that we could still close.”

People in need of shelter – or warmth – can still come into the library when it is open during regular business hours just as before.

The difference, Medows said, is that the library avoids the perception that it is supposed to be available when the weather turns cold.

“We don’t want people to think that we are part of the emergency plan for the city,” Medows said.

Fire Chief Joseph Formhals, who does try to ensure that arrangements are available for people who are homeless or who have other reasons to seek shel-

ter during extreme cold weather, was told Thursday that the library wanted off the list and said, “I am kind of sad to hear that.”

Formhals noted as well that the library will still be a place people can go when it is cold, even if it is not on the official list of warming centers.

“It’s just that they want the ability to close down and not feel they have the responsibility to open for the day and staff it,” Form-

hals said.

Daybreak and MorningStar Mission offer overnight warming shelters.

But the only other designated warming center for daytime is Louis Joliet Mall.

Formhals said Daybreak and MorningStar accommodated people in the daytime when the library closed earlier this month.

But he will look for other institutions downtown or on the near east side willing to offer daytime shelter.

Morris teens to audition for ‘America’s Got Talent’

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Track, basketball, football, scholastic team – Aurelius Lennon-Rios and Marques Kjellesvik are two very busy teenagers.

But after all of their practices, the best friends still make time to work on their dance routine a few hours a night, every night.

“It’s our dream to just dance,” Lennon-Rios said.

“We would love to grow up and be a professional dance team.”

Friday, the two will take their talents to Indianapolis where they are auditioning for the popular televised competition, “America’s Got Talent.” The duo dubbed themselves “Marques Aurelius” and will be performing a dubstep dance routine they have practiced for the past six months.

“It’s a little bit nerve-racking,” Kjellesvik said. “We don’t know how many people we’ll be dancing in front of – could be 1,000 or it could be none.

We just know the judges will be there.”

Dubstep is a popular

genre of electronic dance music that puts less emphasis on lyrics and vocals and focuses more on beats and bass lines.

To dance to the music, Lennon-Rios and Kjellesvik use common hip-hop dance techniques, like “popping,” that involve muscle isolations mixed with fluid movements.

“Even before we started dancing, we loved dubstep,” Lennon-Rios said.

“We started watching videos of Marquese Scott and he really inspired us to dance.”

The boys began watching videos of Scott – a wellknown dubstep performer – about a year ago and haven’t quit since.

Kjellesvik said they spent weeks just watching the videos for three hours a day before they actually tried dancing themselves.

“I would look at some of these crazy moves and think, ‘I can’t do that,’ ” Kjellesvik said. “But then you keep trying it over and over and eventually you’re like, ‘Ok, maybe I can do that.’ ” The two are almost entirely self-taught, except for the guidance provided

grew up in New York and was a part of hip-hop and

break dancing crews as a teenager. His expertise became useful when his son and Kjellesvik became interested in dance.

“Without my dad I don’t think we would be here,” Aurelius Lennon-Rios said.

Andrew Lennon-Rios said he is committed to helping the two succeed as long as they are committed to their dream.

“I’m here for support,” Andrew Lennon-Rios said.

“They are so dedicated to this dream. They talk about it and they live it.”

Several times during last summer, the two, along with another friend who no longer dances with them, would practice their moves on Liberty Street in downtown Morris.

“We put a hat down one day and were so surprised when we got $35,” Aurelius Lennon-Rios said. “People would stop to watch us. It was really cool.”

About three months

into dancing, Aurelius Lennon-Rios said he saw the America’s Got Talent tour would be coming to Indianapolis and decided he and Kjellesvik should develop a routine for the show.

“They started frustrated but then they got through that mental block and kept going,” Andrew Lennon-Rios said. “That’s really encouraging for me to see because now I know if they set their mind to something they will get it done.”

The boys are confident they can go far in the competition, but are committed to dancing whether they succeed Friday.

The two said they love performing and being creative and are even open to trying other types of performance art or anything that lets them be creative.

“If they tell is no then that’s fine,” Kjellesvik said. “That just means we’re going to go home and work harder.”

Famed attorney Hookstratten dies at 83

By BETH HARRIS The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Ed Hookstratten, an attorney who represented a galaxy of entertainment and sports stars including Johnny Carson and Vin Scully during a career of more than 50 years, has died at 83.

He passed away Wednesday of complications from congestive heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills, his son Jon Hookstratten said Thursday.

Hookstratten was a powerful and iconic force in sports, entertainment and broadcast news while representing Carson, Elvis Presley, Dan Rowan and Dick Martin of “Laugh-In” fame.

His news clients included Tom Brokaw, Bryant Gumbel, Jessica Savitch, and Tom Snyder.

“Ed Hookstratten was a brilliant lawyer, my representative and one of my dearest friends

in all the world,” Scully said in a statement. “He introduced me to my wife, Sandi, was our best man at the wedding and was there for me during my darkest hours. My heart goes out to his family with deepest sympathy.”

Nicknamed “The Hook,” Hookstratten negotiated Gumbel’s move from NBC in 1997 to CBS with a contract that paid the former “Today” show host nearly $5 million a year.

Hookstratten had a reputation for getting his star clients innovative, lucrative and unprecedented deals.

“My father was a larger than life personality in a town that specializes in them,” Jon Hookstratten said. “He was obsessed with taking care of his

clients who became a part of his family.”

Hookstratten is mentioned in movie producer Robert Evans’ book “The Kid Stays In the Picture,” and in “Those Guys Have All The Fun,” a book about the origin of ESPN. Hookstratten also was the namesake of the “Lt. Bob Hookstratten” character in Rob Reiner’s rock music mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.” Born Edward Gregory Hookstratten on June 12, 1930, in Whittier, Calif., he earned a business degree from the University of Southern California, where he attended on a baseball scholarship, and earned a degree from Southwestern School of Law in 1957.

Billy Ross, survivor of ’60 Cal Poly crash, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.

– Billy Ross, a survivor of the 1960 plane crash that killed 16 members of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo football team, has died at age 78.

A university statement said Ross died Monday in Bakersfield, Calif. The cause was not released.

Ross was an offensive tackle on the 1959 and 1960 Mustang football teams.

He was 25 when the

team’s flight crashed at the Toledo, Ohio, airport on Oct. 29, 1960. Sixteen teammates and six other people were killed.

Ross was among 26 survivors but suffered severe burns and spent seven months in a

Toledo-area hospital for skin grafts and rehabilitation.

Ross graduated from Cal Poly in 1963 and became a high school teacher and football coach until severe foot pain from crash injuries forced him out of coaching.

CHICAGO – For months, Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner has owned the airwaves and raised millions more than his March primary opponents.

Now he could be about to face his toughest rival yet: the state’s well-funded and politically powerful labor unions.

Officials from several unions say they’re close to launching coordinated attacks against the wealthy businessman, who’s made standing up to “union bosses” a campaign theme.

They say Rauner is markedly anti-labor compared to the other GOP candidates, state Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard and Treasurer Dan Rutherford.

The unions have the money to compete with Rauner financially. But their efforts could backfire if they solidify for primary voters that he’s the candidate most likely to stand up to organized labor.

Rauner says he’s ready for the attacks.

U of I tuition to top $100,000 for 1st time CHAMPAIGN – Newly approved tuition increases at the University of Illinois mean that four years of college on the flagship campus will top $100,000 for many students.

Trustees voted Thursday to raise tuition by 1.7 percent.

They also increased fees and housing costs. Vice President for Academic Affairs Christophe Pierre says the increases stick to a university plan to keep increases in line with inflation.

The annual tuition for in-state students will be $12,036 in Urbana-Cham-

Increases would only affect students starting this fall.

That’s because state law locks tuition for four years for public university students.

Tuition, fees and other costs will top $100,000 for many Urbana-Champaign students.

New lawsuit filed in priest sex abuse case CHICAGO – A new lawsuit alleging sexual abuse of children in the 1960s and 1970s focuses on a now-defrocked priest mentioned in documents the Archdiocese of Chicago released this week.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Cook County Court on behalf of three plaintiffs.

It accuses the former priest, Norbert J. Maday, and another man of molesting children, sometimes in swimming pools. It names the men and the Archdiocese of Chicago as defendants.

A spokeswoman says the archdiocese hadn’t seen the lawsuit, so couldn’t comment Maday was convicted in 1994 and imprisoned for molesting two boys. The documents released this week show Cardinal Francis George sought Maday’s early release in 2000. But months before Maday’s scheduled release, George informed parole officials in 2007 the diocese was severing all ties to Maday.

Online ads show rise in available jobs in Ill. CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Employment Security said online advertis-

ing for jobs in Illinois was up almost 10 percent in December from a year earlier.

The department said Wednesday that 215,000 job openings were advertised in December. That’s up by 19,000 from December 2012.

The department said 92 percent of the jobs advertised last month were full time.

The five most-advertised jobs were for truck drivers, registered nurses, retail sales workers, retail supervisors and marketing managers.

Employment Security Director Jay Rowell called the number of online job ads a sign that employers are ready to hire if they can find the right candidates.

Illinois has one of the nation’s highest unemployment rates, at 8.7 percent in November. December unemployment data is scheduled to be released Friday.

Chicagoan killed in Kabul mourned WILMETTE – Hundreds of people attended a memorial service for a suburban Chicago woman who was killed during a Taliban attack at a popular restaurant in Afghanistan.

Mourners gathered at Weinstein Funeral Home in Wilmette on Wednesday to remember Lexie Kamerman, 27, who was one of 21 people who were killed last week during a suicide bombing and gun attack at a Kabul restaurant.

“Each of you has your own passion, but often we come up with excuses not to follow it or let it take us all the way,” said her mother, Ali Pohn.

“Maybe the legacy of Lexie is to remind all of us that we have a choice. ...”

Panel urges end to phone data spying

By STEPHEN BRAUN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A government review panel warned Thursday that the National Security Agency’s daily collection of Americans’ phone records is illegal and recommended that President Barack Obama abandon the program and destroy the hundreds of millions of phone records it has already collected.

The recommendations by the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board go further than Obama is willing to accept and increase pressure on Con-

gress to make changes.

The panel’s 234-page report included dissents from two of the board’s five members – former Bush administration national security lawyers who recommended that the government keep collecting the phone records. The board described key parts of its report to Obama earlier this month before he announced his plans last week to change the government’s surveillance activities.

In that speech, Obama said the bulk phone collection program would continue for the time being.

He directed the Justice De-

partment and intelligence officials to find ways to end the government’s control over the phone data.

He also insisting on close supervision by a secretive federal intelligence court and reducing the breadth of phone records the NSA can investigate.

Phone companies have said they do not want to take responsibility for overseeing the data under standards set by the NSA. In addition to concluding that the daily collection of phone records was illegal, the board also determined that the practice was ineffective.

“We have not identified a single instance involving a threat to the United States in which the program made a concrete difference in the outcome of a counterterrorism investigation,” it said, and added, “We are aware of no instance in which the program directly contributed to the discovery of a previously unknown terrorist plot or the disruption of a terrorist attack.”

It said the NSA should instead seek individual records relevant to terror cases directly from phone service providers under existing laws.

“Given the limited re-

sults, we concluded the program should be ended,” said board member James Dempsey of the Center for Democracy and Technology, a civil liberties group.

Dempsey and another board member, former chief federal appeals court judge Patricia Wald, also said the phone sweeps did not appear to have clear or strong legal grounding in the USA Patriot Act – the statute overseeing the government’s surveillance activities.

“We have to be careful that secret law does not creep into our jurisprudence,” Wald said.

The board wrote that the phone surveillance did not have a “viable legal foundation” under the Patriot Act, which was used to provide legal backing for the operation after it was secretly authorized by President George W. Bush.

The board also said the surveillance raised constitutional concerns about unreasonable searches, free speech and freedom of the press. Two federal judges have split in recent rulings over the constitutionality of the government collecting Americans’ phone records in such a wholesale way.

Syrian peace talks yield U.S. eyes difficulties in hard stances, slight hope next round of Iran talks

By LORI HINNANT and ZEINA KARAM The Associated Press GENEVA – Syria’s government said stopping terrorism – not talking peace – was its priority, while the Western-backed opposition said “the road to negotiations” had begun, offering a glimmer of hope Thursday for a way to halt the violence that has killed more than 130,000 people.

The two sides did not meet face-to-face, buffered by a famously patient U.N. mediator who shuttled between representatives of Syrian President Bashar Assad and members of the opposition trying to overthrow him. And they did

not seem ready to do so Friday as originally scheduled.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem questioned both the point of the talks and the legitimacy of the Syrian National Coalition, which is made up largely of exiles and lacks influence with an increasingly radicalized rebellion.

Infighting among rebels in the civil war has grown so deadly – almost 1,400 killed in the past 20 days – that the head of al-Qaida called on Islamic militants to stand down, playing directly into Assad’s argument that only his government is preventing Syria’s further descent into chaos.

ing before his meeting with mediator Lakhdar Brahimi, said his government’s priority was to “to fight terrorism.”

Both U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and the head of the Syrian National Coalition derided the notion that Assad should stay in power to fight terrorists.

Both sides affirmed positions hardened after nearly three years of fighting. They blamed each other for turning a once-thriving country into ruins, and they called each other terrorists.

But their willingness to meet separately with Brahimi gave the first sense that the negotiations might bear fruit.

By BRADLEY KLAPPER and JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – For the United States and its negotiating partners, the next round of nuclear talks with Iran could present a difficult decision: to sign another temporary agreement or accept nothing less than an ambitious, multiyear accord to dismantle the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.

To critics in the Middle East and on Capitol Hill, anything short of a full agreement may be seen as merely allowing the Iranians to stall for time, potentially reaping billions of dollars in eased economic sanctions while

still refining their nuclear technology. It could also make it harder for President Barack Obama to hold off a congressional push for tougher sanctions on Iran, which the White House has warned would upend the fragile diplomacy.

The United States and its five partners – Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China – plan to resume face-to-face negotiations with the Iranians next month. They secured a six-month agreement in November that went into effect just this Monday.

That deal froze key parts of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing some trade and financial penalties. Though it in-

cluded a provision to renew the short-term accord for a period of time that would have to be agreed to by all parties, it also aimed to clear the way for broader negotiations on the thorniest aspects of Iran’s nuclear program.

But analysts say another short-term deal may be the only feasible outcome given the vast differences between Tehran and the international coalition.

“I think it’s extremely unlikely that it will be possible to reach a comprehensive agreement in the next six months,” said Gary Samore, who until last year was Obama’s top arms control adviser.

“We’re in for a rolling series of extensions.”

NEWS BRIEFS Virginia AG to fight gay marriage ban RICHMOND, Va. – Gay marriage moved closer to gaining its first foothold in the South when Virginia’s attorney general said Thursday that the state’s ban on same-sex matrimony is unconstitutional and he will join the fight to get it struck down.

“It’s time for the commonwealth to be on the right side of history and the right side of the law,” newly elected Democrat Mark R. Herring said.

Republicans accused Herring of shirking his duty to defend the state’s laws after less than two weeks on the job, while gay rights activists exulted over the latest in a string of victories – this one in a conservative and usually hostile region of the country.

The move reflects the rise of a new Democratic leadership in Virginia and illustrates how rapidly the political and legal landscape on gay marriage in the U.S. is shifting.

South Sudan, rebels sign cease-fire ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – South Sudan’s government and rebels signed a cease-fire deal Thursday that leaders hope will put a pause to five weeks of warfare that has killed thousands of soldiers and civilians.

The peace deal represents the first real progress since political friction turned violent Dec. 15, fueling countrywide battles with ethnic overtones.

But questions were immediately raised about whether all fighters in South Sudan would abide by the agreement, and how long others would follow it.

The military spokesman for South Sudan cautioned that a group of rebel fighters from

the former vice president’s Nuer ethnic group – thousands of armed youths known as the “White Army” – may not want peace.

FDA to revise nutrition facts label WASHINGTON – Those nutrition labels on the back of food packages may soon become easier to read.

The Food and Drug Administration said knowledge about nutrition has evolved over the last 20 years, and the labels need to reflect that.

As the agency considers revisions, nutritionists and other health experts have their own wish list of desired changes.

The number of calories should be more prominent, they say, and the amount of added sugar and percentage of whole wheat in the food should be included. They also want more clarity on how serving sizes are defined.

Man pleads not guilty in 1978 Lufthansa heist NEW YORK – More than 30 years after hooded gunmen pulled a $6 million airport heist dramatized in the Martin Scorsese movie “Goodfellas,” an elderly reputed mobster was arrested at his New York City home on Thursday and charged in the robbery and a 1969 murder.

Vincent Asaro, 78, was named along with his son, Jerome, and three other defendants in wide-ranging indictment alleging murder, robbery, extortion, arson and other crimes from the late 1960s through last year.

The Asaros, both identified as captains in the Bonanno organized crime family, pleaded not guilty through their attorneys and were ordered

held without bail at a brief appearance in federal court in Brooklyn.

The elder Asaro’s attorney, Gerald McMahon, told reporters outside court that his client was framed by shady turncoat gangsters.

The indictment accused Asaro of helping to direct the Dec. 11, 1978, Lufthansa Airlines heist at Kennedy airport – one of the largest cash thefts in American history.

India police say elders ordered gang-rape KOLKATA, India – A 20-yearold Indian woman said she was gang-raped on the orders of a village council because she fell in love with a man from a different ethnic group, police said Thursday.

Twelve suspects and the head of the council have been arrested for the Monday night attack, police said. The woman told police that she lost count of how many men raped her. She was hospitalized Thursday in serious condition.

TV news reports said the woman is a member of an ethnic tribal group and the man is a Muslim from another village. The man visited the woman’s village, Subalpur, on Monday to propose marriage, but was caught by other villagers, and the man and woman were tied to a tree while the council decided their fate, reports said.

Police official C. Sudhakar said the village council ordered the man and woman to each pay a fine of $400. The man’s family was able to pay, but when the woman’s family said they were too poor, the council ordered the gang rape, police said.

Pension reform didn’t save us In the wake of overhyped pension reform, experts are reminding us that Illinois’ financial woes are far from over.

In fact, they’re not much different.

According to the Institute for Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois, as the pension systems eliminate their unfunded liability over the next 25 years, the state’s deficit would increase by $13 billion based on current spending and revenue.

Without the pension reform passed so far, that deficit would be $14 billion.

And that prediction is based on the assumption that the Legislature plans to roll back the “temporary” income-tax increase from 5 percent to 3.75 percent.

So before we place a lot of stock in politicians who claim they’ve saved this state from financial collapse via tinkering with pension reform, consider that Illinois still is wallowing in debt and credit-rating agencies remain unimpressed.

We should expect that without significant changes in state leadership that the deficit will be used as justification, among others, to make the “temporary” income tax increase permanent as state leaders continue to kick the can down the road.

Without far more significant changes to pension reform, which the Legislature and Gov. Pat Quinn decided not to make, changes will have to be made elsewhere or Illinois’ fiscal problems will not improve.

Spending must be addressed. You will hear some politicians tell you that revenue also needs to be addressed, which means they want more of your taxes.

We’d urge residents to pay close attention to the solutions proposed as election season approaches over the next several months.

Ramblin Man feeling the pressure Next week will be my first edition as owner of the Lebanon Advertiser, a small, community newspaper near St. Louis. I’m excited, nervous and still scratching my head wondering how this happened.

I mean, I know how it happened.

But, still, I’m a bit dumbfounded by the whole thing.

That’s because I’m convinced that the former owner could have gotten a better deal for himself from somebody other than me.

It’s refreshing – nay, exhilarating – to find that there are people in this world who do not value money above everything else.

The former owner, Harrison Church, did what he thought was right for the community and the long-term success of the newspaper – not what he

RAMBLIN’ MAN David Porter thought was best for himself. That’s a rarity, but Harry is a rare breed.

The negotiation for the newspaper was more of a vetting process. I knew that there were others who had inquired about buying the paper because a couple of them had discussed it with me before I ever met Harry. Throughout the negotiation, I learned of at least four others who had made inquiries.

They knew that Harry was close to retirement. I know that most of them, and probably all of them, have deeper pockets than I do.

I like to think that Harry’s deci-

sion to sell the newspaper to me says something about me. But I think it says more about Harry.

He’s an old-school newspaper man whose family owned the publication for 75 years. He knows how to set lead type on a Linotype machine and how to run a press.

When I met him this past fall, he was still pasting the paper up on large layout sheets by hand with hot wax. I’m not saying he’s the last guy in Illinois to be doing that, but he would be close to it.

It’s been more than 20 years since I’ve done that, but I still know how.

I think Harry liked that I had been around awhile and was a “hands-on” editor like him.

Someone should be shoveling sidewalks To the Editor: Have you driven across Jefferson Street after a heavy snowfall? Every business has immediately cleared the snow off of their parking lots. They want to make sure that their customers can get in and buy the merchandise, or food, or service. This is so that the businesses keep making money.

But, then look at the sidewalks around the business. They are not shoveled. Shouldn’t these same businesses that make profit from the community also serve the community?

Those people who don’t have cars, have to walk or take a bus.

They have nowhere to walk. They usually walk on

Maybe he just likes underdogs. There was no way I was ever going to own my own newspaper if it wasn’t for someone like Harry having faith in me and working with me to achieve that goal.

It puts an additional level of responsibility on my shoulders to prove to him that he made the right decision. Maybe that’s what he likes – knowing that I will work harder and appreciate the opportunity more.

Today, a lot of news-

papers are run by former advertising directors and businesspeople. Maybe that’s where the smart money is. But I’m from the news side, and so is Harry. For us, content is king and advertising is a necessity. Maybe that’s what appealed to him.

Whatever it was, I’m thankful for the opportunity.

A few people have asked whether I’ll continue to write this column. I might as well.

I’ll be running it in my own newspaper, too. I’m amazed at the level of support I’ve had for this venture from readers, friends and Harrison and his wife Harriet. That’s a lot of pressure, folks.

Lewis knocks off No. 9 Southern Indiana Kyle Nelson plays ‘probably his best game’ to key Flyers to victory

The Lewis men’s basketball team had not beaten Southern Indiana in the last decade at Neil Carey Area. The past two seasons, the Flyers dropped one- and twopoint decisions.

But the agony ended Thursday when Lewis, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, outscored Southern Indiana, 47-36, in the second half en route to a 73-63 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory.

“This was big. We prepared hard for two days for these guys,” said Lewis sophomore big man Kyle Nelson, who had what coach Scott Trost termed “probably his best game.”

Nelson had to battle Southern Indiana’s heavyweight post man, Aaron Nelson, and with the help of David Niggins off the bench, more than held his own.

Kyle Nelson scored 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. He stepped out and hit three 15-foot jumpers in the second half. Aaron Nelson, who came in averaging 18 points, settled for 14 and six boards.

“Kyle’s been struggling confidence-wise,” Trost said. “[Thursday], he stepped up and made shots. I thought he was really good.”

Lewis (14-2, 6-2) struggled offensively early and shot only 37.5 percent in the first half, which ended with the Screaming Eagles (14-2, 6-2) leading, 28-26.

But the Flyers were torrid in the second half, shooting 53.3 percent to finish at .452.

“Kyle played a heck of a game,” he said. “I am very proud of him.”

Niggins, who swears he called “bank” on the 3-pointer he banked home in the second half, said that going against Aaron Nelson is no picnic.

“He is a big boy,” he said. “I think we made a statement with this one.”

Southern Indiana, which ended Lewis’ season in the GLVC Tournament a year ago, received 13 points from Lawrence Thomas and 11 from Gavin Schuman.

Lewis will face Bellarmine at 3 p.m. Saturday in a GLVC contest.

Lincoln-Way East claims first conference victory

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A strong second quarter powered Lincoln-Way East to its first conference victory Thursday.

Trailing Joliet West, 24-13, at the end of the first quarter, the Griffins outscored the home team 2410 in the second quarter, capped by a 16-2 run to end the half to claim a 70-67 victory over the Tigers.

After seeing his team blow a fourth-quarter lead in the last game – a 44-37 defeat to Lockport – Lincoln-Way East (5-13, 1-5) coach Rich Kolimas was pleased see his team clamp down, dictate the pace in the second half and emerge victorious.

“Sometimes it’s easy to get deflated if you play hard but are not rewarded with wins,” Kolimas said. “But these boys don’t get down on themselves, they just keep working and playing hard.”

The Griffins have now won two of their past three games. It was hard to fore-

see a Lincoln-Way East victory in the first quarter Thursday against Joliet West.

The Tigers dominated play from the inside out in the opening eight minutes, scoring their first six points off offensive rebounds, then went 4 for 6 from 3-point territory.

Following a 12-5 Joliet West run, Kolimas used his first timeout in order to stop the bleeding. “[Joliet West] is such an athletic team that can hurt you in so many different ways,” Kolimas said.

“They can drive the paint, rebound and hit the outside shot.”

The second quarter, however, was a different story. With about four minutes left in the second and his team trailing by 14, starting guard Tom Dinaso returned to the court after an abbreviated break. Moments later, the senior guard took a charge and scored a quick basket, seemingly energizing a listless Griffins squad.

Dinaso scored six of his 16 points in the second

quarter, including a layup as time expired, to give Lincoln-Way East a one-point lead at halftime.

“We thought that we could hang with Joliet West on both sides of the ball,” Dinaso said. “It took a while for us to get going and establish a rhythm. I thought that we started to play our game in the second quarter and carried it over into the second half.”

“Tom is the leader of this team,” Kolimas said.

“He is very vocal and leads by example, and the rest of the team really feeds off his energy.”

While the Griffins offense slowly pulled away in the third quarter, the Tigers’ shooters sputtered from the field.

Joliet West did not score in the third until nearly four minutes had passed. Shots the Tigers normally hit with ease were not falling, as the team made one field goal in the third quarter.

In the fourth, Lincoln-Way East protected its lead and hit a handful of free throws down the stretch to wrap up the victory.

His hope is that Joe Fan takes a closer look at what is happening than what it says on the surface.

Friday. The Spartans are among the top teams in the state, No. 1 according to some. Super 5-foot-9 guard Tyler Ulis is a Kentucky recruit and an Illinois Mr. Basketball candidate.

That sort of attraction brings fans to the Student Activity Center. They’re not expecting an upset, they want to see the best player and best team.

“When you have the No. 1 team in the state coming in, the casual fan probably is not going to see what is happening,” Gura said, anticipating those fans overlooking what his team is accomplishing. “I want us to be at our best and see what happens.”

It is possible the Hilltoppers (7-12) will play well and still be blown out by a team as good as Marian.

But fans willing to look deeper and able to recognize an underdog doing things the right way may come away impressed.

“We’ve got a bunch of sophomores and juniors who are undersized and are battling their butts off,” Gura said after Wednesday’s 48-37 loss to Lincoln-Way Central. “It’s been like that all season.

where we want to be. But as long as we stay on the road, we will be OK.” Gura said the Hilltoppers, who already have more victories than the previous two seasons combined, not only must contend with Marian, but Benet, Notre Dame and St. Viator are next on the schedule. Benet and St. Viator are ranked in the Chicago area and Notre Dame also is good.

“Brutal,” was Gura’s description of what lies ahead As much as the Hilltoppers would like to knock off one or more of the East Suburban Catholic heavyweights, using those games as a learning experience and continuing on that road will be rewarding in itself.

The Hilltoppers had won two straight before the loss to Lincoln-Way Central. A big reason why they fell behind the Knights was their 8-of-37 shooting in the final

three quarters, a chilly 21.6 percent.

Putting aside the temporary inability to hit layups and open jumpers, there are things Joliet Catholic has been doing well.

“We’ve been playing real hard defensively,” junior guard Keegan Tyrell said. “We have to pack it in a little more because we’re small.

“That’s important, and we’ve been crashing the offensive boards, too. And as we get more experience, we’re learning how to finish.”

Tyrell is in the regular rotation with juniors Nick Dalesandro and Colton Kolowski and sophomores Jalen Jackson, Drake Fellows, Harold Davis and Luke Mander.

“That’s a nice thing that they’re all underclassmen,” Gura said. “That’s encouraging. They’re learning.”

Fellows is 6-6, Mander 6-4 and they share the center spot. Kolowski is 6-3,

Dalesandro 6-1, Davis 5-10 and Jackson and Tyrell 5-9.

The Hilltoppers are not going to beat opponents into submission with their size.

What they must do, in addition to playing hard and smart defensively, is value the basketball, get good shots and knock them down. Plus, they need occasional points off putbacks. They scored only one basket in that manner against Lincoln-Way Central, which contributed to the loss.

As Gura said, they’re not yet where they want to be. But aided what he terms his “good teaching staff” of assistants Dave Mondrella, Tom Knapczyk and Adam DeGroot and a roster of “great kids,” he is excited about his last hurrah.

“Whenever I leave JCA, that will be it for me coaching,” Gura said earlier this season. “When that time comes, the program hopefully will be where we want it to be.”

Hahn appeases fans with offseason moves

In his second offseason as White Sox general manager, Hahn has found a way to heal a wounded fan base in the months after a horrible 99-loss season. And he’s done so even though his team won’t be expected to contend in 2014.

All Hahn has done is acquire enough good, young position-player prospects to complement a solid, young pitching staff led by Cy Young candidate Chris Sale, a nice mix that seems to have the Sox – even without Masahiro Tanaka – on the path to being good again before too long. Perhaps by 2015.

A fan base well known for showing its grumpy side will convene Friday through Sunday for SoxFest at the Palmer House Hilton and will not be completely rid of a bad baseball hangover from 2013, but are pretty much sold on Hahn’s transparent plan to make it all better. In Rick they trust.

Hahn has acquired $68 million Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu, right fielder Avisail Garcia, center fielder Adam Eaton and third baseman Matt Davidson in trades and free agency since the middle of last season. Those deals potentially add four new regulars, almost half a lineup, under long-term team control. They also boosted the Sox’s bottom-ofthe-barrel prospects rankings to something more respectable.

“On paper, there is a future for every one of those moves but, there again, nobody is proven,’’ one major league scout said. “Davidson is not proven. [Garcia] has good talent, but he’s not proven, either. Eaton is your typical leadoff guy center fielder, and his best years should be ahead of him, but he’s not proven. That’s where you have to trust your scouts.’’

The Sox did part with a proven, 25-year old closer in Addison Reed to get Davidson (the Diamondbacks were happy to get him for a third baseman that was behind two others in their system) and

versatile 26-year-old left-hander Hector Santiago to fetch Eaton. So their supply of good, young pitching has taken a hit.

With every gain comes a cost, which Hahn and his staff seem to get if increased spending in scouting means anything. After ranking last in draft spending from 2007 to 2011 and being KOed from Latin American talent searches because of the David Wilder kickback scandal, the Sox are investing more on both fronts Hahn’s special assistant in Latin America, Marco Paddy, reeled in a huge international catch in teenage outfielder Micker Zapata, signed for $1.4 million.

penalties for overspending put the Sox, who have spent 100 percent of their bonus pools in the last two drafts, back in the game.

“In the end it’s about winning in Chicago, and the acquisitions we’ve made in the last few months are a big part toward that,’’ Hahn said. “But what I personally feel good about is the improvements we’ve made on the player development side, the scouts we’ve added [pro, amateur, international], the re-introduction of this club to the international signing market which will help us long term, and fully funding those departments now.’’

Sox payroll figures to fall below $90 million (it was $112 million last year) but chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in December there was room to add for the right cause, which turned out to be a somewhat surprising nine-figure multiyear pitch for Tanaka. The attempt failed but hiked the Sox approval rating with fans.

“We have enough money to win,” Hahn said. “We have enough to build a competitive club and if sometimes we have to be creative or take some chances or make some trades as opposed to just papering over mistakes [with money], so be it.”

Mistakes? Last season was so riddled by them that fans stopped paying attention to the Sox at midseason. They were so hard to watch. With a sound plan being executed for all to see, there is reason for hope – and to pay attention again.

Herring and Pasqualoni replace Tim Tibesar and Mike Phair, respectively.

They were fired Jan. 12.

Herring has coached for 33 years, including eight as a linebackers coach. He coached the linebackers for the Texans from 2011 to 2013 and the Cowboys from 2008 to 2010. He also was the Texans’ linebackers coach from 2002 to 2003.

From 2005 to 2007, Herring was the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Arkansas. He has 25 years of experience coaching in the college ranks.

Pasqualoni has coached for 42 years, with this being his seventh as an NFL assistant. He was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator/defensive line coach in 2010. From 2008 to 2009, Pasqualoni was the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator. He coached Dallas’ linebackers from 2006 to 2007 and the tight ends in 2005.

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com The last time Derrick Rose participated in USA Basketball, the Bulls point guard eventually walked away with the 2011 NBA MVP. Call it a dose of confidence Rose never let go of that season.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau would love a repeat performance.

Rose was one of 28 players named for the 2014-16 USA national team pool Thursday, and if his surgically repaired right knee can re- Derrick Rose spond in time, he could play in this summer’s FIBA World Cup in Spain.

“Well, I’m hopeful that he will,” Thibodeau said of Rose on Wednesday night.

“But a lot depends on where his health is.

But I thought it was a great experience for him in the past. I know how much he enjoyed it. I know how USA Basketball feels about him. I think it’s a great honor and a privilege, and hopefully it’ll work out.”

Rose was a member of the gold medal

team that won the World Championships in the summer leading into the 2010-11 season, and he helped guide the Bulls to the Eastern Conference Finals in the wake of that.

“It challenges guys,” Thibodeau said of the USA Basketball experience. “I think it’s beneficial to all the players. I know Derrick, my first year when he played that summer in the World Games, he hit the ground running. He had a great season. He was the MVP. But I thought that experience was invaluable to him.”

The next step in the pool process for Rose would be showing he’s healthy enough to qualify for the team, and USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo addressed that in a teleconference, mentioning two injured guards: Rose and Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook.

“Certainly Derrick Rose, we’re not sure about,” Colangelo said. “We have a fluid roster. We continue to watch players and prepare ourselves.”

Thibodeau was named an assistant coach on the staff last season, so if Rose can give it a go there will be a very familiar face watching him closely.

“Well, I’m hopeful that he will. But a lot depends on where his health is.

Lupus sufferer promotes community theater

The award-winning play “’night, Mother” by Marsha Norman is intense, intimate and will take the audience on a wild ride of emotions.

At least that’s what Christina Spiros of Shorewood – who plays “Mother,” just one of the play’s two roles – thinks.

“Seating will be limited, only 50 people per show, and the audience will be onstage with the actors,” Spiros said.

“And we will only have five shows.”

The play is produced by Latitude 41, a five-board member community theater group, which is the new house group for the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in Joliet, Spiros said.

All five, including Spiros, who battles systemic lupus while vigorously promoting community theater, are former members of the Joliet Drama Guild, Spiros said.

Unlike some groups, there is no membership. Other participants are called “supporters,” she added.

People most commonly associate the name Latitude 41 with its annual “Transylvania General” show, Spiros said.

The theater group also produces Bicentennial Park’s annual musical, as well as two shows of its own.

“Sometimes I’m onstage and sometimes I’m behind the scenes making costumes,” Spiros said. “I try to be a part of it wherever I can be.”

The original production of “’night, Mother” won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for drama and

four Tony Award nominations.

Spiros said the role of “Mother” is her largest – and most challenging – to date.

It’s the first time Spiros will portray an older woman – Mother is in her 60s and Spiros is 44 – and as a “simple, country woman,” Mother’s word choices are significantly different than Spiros’ own.

Calling up memories of her grandparents as they aged helped Spiros learn to walk and talk slower.

“I translated that into the person I created onstage,” Spiros said.

Community theater is a fairly new passion for Spiros, although as a teen, she did work behind the scenes at what is now Plainfield Central High School. At 21, Spiros started experiencing the joint pain and exhaustion that led to a lupus diagnosis the following year.

“I was working downtown [Chicago] at the time. I’d get on the train just crying from the pain,” Spiros said. “Twelve hours later, my knees would practically be the size of soccer balls.”

About eight years later, Spiros stopped working full time and began a real estate career; its flexible hours were easier to manage during lupus flareups. When her sales dropped in 2004, Spiros then worked at a craft store until a herniated neck disc prohibited her lifting anything heavier than 25 pounds.

That’s when Spiros enrolled in Lewis University in Romeoville to major in English and minor in theater.

“I had loved being part of a theater family. It’s such a close-knit group,” Spiros said.

“When you’re in a show, you develop a core group of friends.

It really is like family.”

A change in her medication has reduced Spiros’ symptoms; she now works for R R Donnelly in Bolingbrook. Still, the

medication has affected her liver and kidneys, she said. Other lupus-related symptoms, for Spiros, have included pleurisy and endocarditis.

Still, Spiros feels her lupus is mild, by comparison to others.

“I think sometimes keeping busy helps,” Spiros said.

“Keeping busy” meant learning to sew in 1999 and founding Children’s Couture in 2009.

By then Spiros owned three sewing machines, as well as a serger for creating professional seams. Each item was one of a kind, Spiros said, although if a customer liked a particular one, Spiros would modify it, perhaps with different buttons or accent fabric, she said.

Today, Spiros sews mainly for Latitude 41. Other board members are Bill Griffith of Plainfield, Laura Griffith of Plainfield, Luke Pascale of Plainfield and Al Pindell of Shorewood.

One significant features of Latitude 41 is that the director for any given show chooses the show. Bill Griffith is the director for “’night, Mother.”

“It’s been our goal to have directors that are so passionate about a show, they just have to bring it to life,” Spiros said.

‘RIDE ALONG’ REVIEW

Laughs along the way

By JESSICA HERNDON The Associated Press Joining the ranks of odd-couple police comedies, “Ride Along” delivers laughs over action, with loudmouthed funnyman Kevin Hart driving the hilarity.

Hart had a lot to live up to stepping into the role of rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube’s sidekick in this buddy-cop farce. Cube (real name O’Shea Jackson) and Chris Tucker were classic quipsters in the 1995 pot-comedy “Friday” that started it all, and when then-newcomer Mike Epps dropped in on the sequel, his chemistry with Cube led to a third film.

The formula is always the same: Cube, who is level-headed for the most part, gets into trouble with his

ridiculous sidekick. “Ride Along” is no different, and that’s OK. It’s a blueprint we’ve come to rely on for nearly 20 years. With roots in stand-up, Hart continues to make a successful transition from stage to screen, with three films released in the past year and five scheduled through 2015.

In “Ride Along,” Hart’s rapid banter comes off naturally, as if he’s always improvising. Cube’s no-nonsense approach, punctuated by his steady straight-face, offers an ideal contrast.

Ben (Hart), who has just been accepted into the Atlanta police academy, is ready to ask his girlfriend Angela (Tika Sumpter) to marry him. But first, he’s determined to get the approval of her older brother, James (Cube), an Atlanta police officer. But at 5 feet, 4

inches tall, Ben is far from James’ biggest fan. He’d pictured his sister with a brawny athlete, “not the mascot,” he says. In order to prove he’s worthy of asking for Angela’s hand, Ben must accompany James on a 24hour patrol of Atlanta.

Unfortunately, Ben doesn’t do a great job of being tough or discrete.

He likens police work to his “Call of Duty” video gaming and calls Angela “bouncy butt” after telling her, “You make me think of rainbows because we both love colors.” It’s one of many absurdly funny lines Hart delivers while trying to prove himself to James. And their exchange, reminiscent of smoothtalking Will Smith and the foolish Martin Lawrence in “Bad Boys,” is consistently amusing.

‘GIMME SHELTER’ REVIEW

Message with a light touch

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post Vanessa Hudgens’ campaign to erase the memory of “High School Musical” from our nation’s collective consciousness continues apace with “Gimme Shelter,” a factbased indie drama in which the former Disney teen queen plays a troubled, pregnant 16-year-old runaway.

As with her bad-girl performance in last year’s campy, culty “Spring Breakers” – which garnered more critical praise than viewers, but also a few outright pans, including mine – it’s unclear whether middle America is ready to embrace this newly serious actress.

That’s a shame, because she’s quite good.

It’s more than a matter of adopting fake facial piercings, matted hair, a spotty complexion, a Noo Yawk accent and a bad attitude, all of which Hudgens does with great conviction.

That’s nothing that a host of other glamorous actresses seeking artistic street cred haven’t also done. Hudgens, however, makes the most of her physical transformation, down to her character’s shuffling, boyishly belligerent walk.

Hudgens also gets at the character’s vulnerability, making it poignantly clear that the chip on the girl’s shoulder is a defense mechanism. From

the opening scene, when Apple decides to leave her mother – a junkie prostitute played, with ferocious intensity and filthy yellow teeth, by Rosario Dawson – it’s obvious that Apple is terrified, despite her bravado.

She tracks down her birth father, Tom (Brendan Fraser), a wealthy Wall Streeter who’s willing to take Apple in if she gets an abortion.

But our heroine can’t go through with the procedure and finds herself in a shelter for pregnant teens.

The movie, which was inspired by Kathy DiFiore, a New Jersey woman who operates several such shelters, has a strong anti-abortion message but mostly avoids religiosity.

Here are the answers to the first two questions in my Christmas Competition.

1. How should South plan the play in six clubs after West leads a trump and East follows suit?

South should finish drawing trumps, cash the heart ace, play a diamond to dummy’s queen, ruff the heart jack in his hand, and lead another diamond to the dummy.

If the diamonds split 3-2, declarer is playing for an overtrick by taking two spade finesses. So, let’s assume diamonds are 4-1.

If East has four diamonds, South cashes the last high diamond, then gives East the lead in diamonds. Now if East has the spade king, he is endplayed. If he leads away from that king, declarer runs the trick around to dummy’s queen, then plays a spade to his jack. (If East does not have the spade king, the contract has no chance.)

Alternatively, as in the diagram, if West started with four diamonds, South should now lead the spade queen from the board.

If the finesse loses, again the contract was unmakable. So let’s have East cover the queen with his king. Declarer wins with his ace and exits with his last diamond to endplay West, who must either lead around into South’s jack-nine of spades or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

2. Suggest an uncontested auction to six clubs.

This is tough. It is much easier to end in six diamonds, which makes with this distribution. I accepted anything reasonable.

Elevated eye pressure could indicate glaucoma Dear Doctor K: At my last appointment, my ophthalmologist mentioned something about elevated eye pressure. What could this mean?

Dear Reader: Elevated eye pressure is often – but not always – associated with glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause vision loss by damaging the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. How does elevated eye pressure (also called intraocular pressure) damage the optic nerve? Normally, a clear liquid called the aqueous humor circulates through the eye, helping to maintain the eye’s shape and pressure. Eventually, the liquid passes through a sieve-like system of tissues and drains out of the eye.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff In glaucoma, this drainage system breaks down, slowing or blocking the outflow of fluid. The fluid backs up and pressure rises inside the eye.

Why is this? Imagine filling a balloon with water.

Say you’re squirting water into the balloon with a turkey baster and pinching the opening of the balloon to keep the water inside.

There’s just a little amount of water in the balloon.

When you loosen the opening, water will dribble out because there’s not much water pressure inside.

But say you fill the balloon until you think it’s close to bursting. Now when you unpinch the opening, water will shoot out – the more water inside

the balloon, the greater the water pressure. It’s the same with your eyeball.

When pressure builds inside the eye, this puts pressure on the optic nerve. If the pressure continues, optic nerve fibers begin to die off and vision fades. This damage is irreversible.

Eye pressure is measured during any standard eye exam. Elevated pressure can indicate glaucoma – but not everyone with slightly elevated pressure will get glaucoma. That’s because the amount of stress the optic nerve can withstand differs for each person and each eye. Just as not everyone with slightly elevated pressure will get glaucoma, it’s also true that some people with normal pressures will get glaucoma. Their optic nerves are unusually susceptible to what in most people are normal pressures.

That’s why your eye

doctor would not only have measured your pressures.

He or she also would have looked for additional signs of glaucoma. For example, if the front surface of your optic nerve, called the optic disc, was affected by glaucoma, the doctor would have seen “deep cupping.” A deeply cupped disc appears indented and more pale and yellow than normal. It means that, whatever the pressure in your eye is, the optic disc (optic nerve) is being damaged.

You should also have two to four eye examinations per year to make sure the disease is not progressing. If it is, you may need more aggressive treatment.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old guy, and I’m really attracted to a certain young lady my age. I met her at a party and she seemed interested in me. I asked her for her telephone number and she gave it to me and asked me to call her sometime. Well, yesterday was the time. I called her, and we talked for about 15 minutes when I finally got the courage to ask her for a date. She told me she would love to, but that she was going steady with a guy she really loved. I was so shocked I nearly dropped the phone.

I then asked her why she gave me her phone number and then asked me to call her, and she said that I seemed like a friendly guy and she wanted for us to be friends. I hung up a confused guy. I don’t want to be “just friends” with her. I want to take her out.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and this past summer started a complete “body makeover” program. I eat properly and exercise regularly, and in two months I have lost 17 pounds. I still need to lose about a dozen more pounds, so I’m staying on my program.

Once I get down to 120 pounds, I intend to maintain that weight. My mom is a great cook and baker, so we always have an abundance of food around.

I realize that it is difficult to forgo mom’s delicious dishes, but those extra calories definitely add up. According to Dr. James Mass, author of “Power Sleep,” teens should have about 10 hours of sleep per night.

He offers these tips for getting a good night’s sleep: • Avoid caffeine after 2 p.m., including soda, iced tea, coffee and chocolate.

• To create a stress-free environment, keep homework and other non-slumber activities to a minimum in your bedroom.

• Don’t exercise within 3 hours of bedtime. You’ll be too pumped up to sleep.

• Keep your bedroom no warmer than 75 degrees.

‘The Best Offer’ doesn’t add up to much

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post It would be easy to mistake the era depicted in “The Best Offer” as some quaint, long-ago time when men wore suspenders, posh restaurants had good acoustics and selfies were painted in exquisite detail. But the film, by “Cinema Paradiso” auteur Giuseppe Tornatore, takes place in the present day, albeit among an upper echelon of wealthy and refined individuals.

The whiff of musty air works for the film, which has a Hitchcockian quality and music by the brilliant Ennio Morricone, Sergio Leone’s goto composer. This is a movie about antiques, and that includes the main character, the perfectly-named Virgil Oldman, played by Geoffrey Rush.

Virgil is a renowned

auctioneer and appraiser with a passion for paintings. He’s a serious man with a fear of women (at least real ones; he has a massive collection of female portraits) and an off-putting habit of wearing gloves at all times. He has at least one skeleton in his closet: He sometimes passes off authentic masterworks as forgeries, then auctions them at a discount so he can add them to his secret collection.

Virgil’s accomplice and purchaser in this scheme is Billy, played by Donald Sutherland, whose scarves and flowing locks call to mind a creepy professor.

Virgil, while lonely, seems to be on top of his professional game. But then he gets a call from a reclusive heiress, who hasn’t left her house in more than a decade and wants to offload the valuable belongings of her late parents. Virgil

agrees to work with Claire (Sylvia Hoeks), who speaks to him through a door, and before you know it, he’s falling in love. Never mind that he’s never seen her – or that she’s 27.

In the process of sifting through Claire’s belongings, Virgil keeps stumbling upon rusty gears, scattered around the house like Easter eggs, and he enlists young Robert (Jim Sturgess) to help him reassemble the pieces into a spectacularly strange contraption.

At its best, the movie, like the slowly materializing gizmo, builds on itself while retaining an aura of mystery.

Morricone’s unnerving music almost single-handedly creates the suspense. While movie scores often call attention to themselves, Morricone’s is ever-present and evocative but also unobtrusive.

The beginning of the movie is cryptic and entertaining, and Tornatore cooks up an equally inspired – if overwrought – ending, but the filmmaker doesn’t appear to have any idea of how to link the two. It wouldn’t be right to give too much away, but suffice it to say, during the middle of the movie characters begin behaving in increasingly strange and unbelievable ways and there are unexplained leaps in time that prove confusing (and not in a delightfully enigmatic way).

“The Best Offer” turns out to be a beautiful shell. It looks good and sounds better, but for all its intricacies, it doesn’t add up to much.

• “The Best Offer” received two out of four stars. The film is rated R and it contains graphic nudity and sex. It runs 131 minutes.

PROJECT SCHEDULE The Turf Mowing Service will occur at numerous parks throughout the district and New Lenox School District 122 sites -a map of the site locations will be provided in the Bid Documents. Generally, sites will be mowed once a week starting in mid April thru first week of November 2014 (weather pending-see bid documents for particulars).

Bid Documents will be available at the New Lenox Park District Community Center (1 Manor Drive) New Lenox, Illinois on January 28, 2014 at 10 a.m.

A public bid opening will occur at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the New Lenox Park District Community Center located at 1 Manor Drive, New Lenox, Illinois. Sealed bids will be received until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the New Lenox Park District Community Center. Bids should be labeled “Turf Mowing Service”.

A Certified or Cashier's check payable to the New Lenox Community Park District, or a Bid Bond in an amount equal to Ten Percent (10%) of the total bid amount must accompany each bid. Failure to provide a Bid Bond or Certified or Cashier's Check shall render the bid incomplete and rejected. Once submitted, no bids will be withdrawn without written consent from the New Lenox Community Park District's Attorney.

The successful bidder will be required to furnish Performance Bond in the full amount of the contract price and proof of insurance demonstrating the Bidder's insurability.

The New Lenox Community Park District reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids, reject non conforming bids, reject conditional bids, waive irregularities in the bid-
