His petitions for re-election to seat were challenged

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Village Trustee Jim McDonald will not seek re-election April 7, withdrawing his candidacy hours before a scheduled hearing over an objection to his candidate petitions.

McDonald’s petitions were challenged Jan. 5 by Shorewood resident Anthony Luciano, who also is running for Village Board.

A hearing was scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, but it was canceled after Shorewood Executive Assistant Toni Dulny said she received McDonald’s withdrawal papers shortly after noon Thursday.

Luciano alleged in his objection that 55 of McDonald’s 147 signatures were invalid.

“I’m sure I could’ve, but I didn’t have enough time to verify those signatures,” McDonald said, adding that he also withdrew because of the legal consultation costs associated with contesting the objection, as Jim well as personal McDonald reasons.

“I regret he had to withdraw,” Luciano said. “But the whole idea behind the objection was to make sure we’re following the election code.”

Luciano alleged that 55 of McDonald’s signatures either weren’t signed by the proper person being represented, or came from someone who wasn’t a registered voter or who didn’t live in the village.

A candidate needed 132 signatures to qualify for the

ballot. So Luciano needed to prove that at least 16 of the alleged 55 improper signatures were invalid.

McDonald said health issues in the weeks prior to the petition deadline prevented him from obtaining the same amount of signatures he gathered in previous campaigns.

After an informational hearing on the objection Jan. 9, McDonald said he would get affidavits from the people whose signatures were in question.

McDonald said he obtained the affidavits, but an attorney said the Election Board may not accept them. He advised McDonald get the affidavits again through a notary.

But McDonald said he didn’t have enough time to get the signed affidavits a second time.

Call at issue in slaying case Romeoville man said to have told son he killed wife

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County judge could decide next month whether a phone call made by a 71-year-old Romeoville man charged in the 2010 death of his wife will be admissible when he stands trial.

A hearing on the matter was scheduled for Thursday before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak, but was postponed until Feb. 17 at the request of both attorneys.

John Sadler, 71, was arrested in 2010 after police found Carol Sadler’s body in their Romeoville home. According to police, Sadler admitted he’d hit his wife of 46 years on the head with a hammer during an argument 10 days previous and told friends she was out of town.

Sadler was initially arrested on murder charges, but those were dropped three months later because medical tests reportedly couldn’t prove the hammer injuries triggered the heart attack that led to Carol Sadler’s death.

He faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, concealment of a homicide, aggravated battery to a senior citizen and aggravated domesJohn Sadler tic battery.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Frank Byers said Thursday there are still “some legal issues” to be worked out on both sides.

Byers said February’s hearing will determine whether a phone call Sadler made to his son from the Romeoville police station can be admitted as evidence during the trial.

While Sadler’s son could testify his father admitted killing his mother and planned to plead guilty, Byers said a deci-

sion is needed on whether the recording itself can be used.

At the time of the phone call, the Romeoville Police Station was “brand new,” Byers said, so the phones didn’t yet have stickers disclosing that calls were subject to recording.

Byers said there’s also question as to whether the phone conversation was indeed private.

“Police were standing right next to him, so what was his expectation of privacy anyway?” Byers said. “He used a police phone.”

Byers said recent changes to the state’s eavesdropping law, which eases restrictions on recordings, could also come into play in determining whether the phone call recording can be admitted as evidence.

Outside the courtroom, Sadler’s lawyer Ignatius Villasenor wouldn’t comment beyond the fact that both sides had “legal and statutory issues” to work out between now and Feb. 17.

Schools move to teach typing to students at younger ages

OLINGBROOK – Eighthgrade students at Jane Addams Middle School were focused on their keyboard strokes Wednesday morning in their applied technology class.

Except for the clacking of keyboards, the room was silent between their teacher’s instructions, as the 19 students typed word strings such as “ask all salsa” and “glad dad had half a salad.”

They were learning how to type, and the letters for all those words are found along the center line of the keyboard, known as “home row.”

In the past, typing was an optional course students could take, dedicated to the high schools. The phasing in of keyboarding to the middle-school level is a result of students being exposed to computers at an earlier age, and an attempt to get students to break bad typing habits early.

Breaking bad habits

Keyboarding is an essential skill students should learn earlier, said Roger Merritt, an applied technology teacher at Jane Addams.

Valley View School District 365-U used to offer typing instruction at the high-school level. But it also offered keyboarding as an option in the middle schools.

“It wasn’t until this year it officially became a part of the middle-school curriculum,” Merritt said.

The district also is phasing in Chromebooks, a type of laptop designed to use web applications and cloud-based storage.

Missing public comment rules found

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It turns out the city of Joliet has written rules for public participation after all.

Councilman Jim McFarland ferreted out the rules Thursday, a day after staff told him and other council members at a committee meeting that they could find no written procedures for public comment at meetings.

The public comment rules have become an issue since City Attorney Martin Shanahan proposed an ordinance out-

lining rules opposed by some, including McFarland.

McFarland questioned why new rules were proposed. McFarland said Thursday he suspects the new rules are a reaction to public opposition to the Rialto Square Theatre marquee voiced at recent council meetings.

“I think it’s very suspicious,” McFarland said Thursday. “I think it has to do with the marquee controversy.”

City Manager Jim Hock and Shanahan told the council’s Land Use and Legislative Committee on Wednesday that a proposed ordinance that in-

cludes rules for public participation was created because they could not find a city ordinance that governed procedures at council meetings.

Both said Thursday that the problem was that the resolution passed in 1998 was never converted to a city ordinance and proved difficult to find.

“I would suggest an ordinance so we could find it,” Shanahan said.

City Clerk Christa Desiderio said an attempt was made to find rules for public comment in old city resolutions. But the relevant resolution turned out to be categorized in the

city computer under the word “participation” and not the words used in the search.

“There was an attempt to find rules of procedure and rules for council meetings,” Desiderio said. “That doesn’t show up when you search that way.”

Desiderio found the resolution after McFarland did an Internet search to find information related to an old controversy. In 1998, the City Council passed a resolution limiting comment to workshop meetings. McFarland said he remembered the controversy and tracked down newspaper

articles to place the date.

Mayor Tom Giarrante, a council member at the time, voted for the resolution. While it still stands, it is not observed. Public participation is allowed at regular council meetings. He did not immediately return calls made Thursday afternoon seeking comment.

Other rules in the resolution are practiced but often bent, including a three-minute limit on public comments and a requirement that people notify the city clerk on the Thursday before council meetings if they want to speak.

Joliet proposes crackdown on ‘temporary’ signs

In 30 days, according to a proposed Joliet ordinance aimed at limiting the use of banners, inflatables and other roadside attention-grabbers placed outside local businesses.

“I’ve had a lot of complaints about dancing puppets and feather signs,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said. “It’s beginning to look like a carnival.”

Quillman has been the lead proponent for tighter regulation of temporary signs that do not go away.

The Joliet City Council Legislative and Land Use Committee this week approved a proposed ordinance that could go to the full council for a vote Feb. 3.

The proposed measure puts limits on how many temporary signs can be posted, how long they can stay, and how many times a year they can be used.

Businesses and others who use the signs would pay a $50 permit fee for the signs. Those who violate the ordinance

“We’re trying to bring some order, some control to an issue that has cropped up over the years,” said Kendall Jackson, the city’s planning director. “These are signs that are temporary in nature but, without regulation, become permanent.”

The proposed ordinance would allow a business to use up to three temporary signs for a 30-day period. Businesses could use temporary signs only twice a year.

An exemption would be granted for signs used by home sellers, such as open house advertisements. A-frame signs are being exempted as planners consider how to regulate

New member joins library board

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield resident Jason Puetz said one of the main reasons he is running for the unexpired two-year term on the Plainfield Public Library Board is because he sees the need for a referendum to expand the library.

“There are books stacked to the top of the ceiling,” Puetz said. “There’s no more space to do anything. I’d like to see a referendum, if possible, help the library out.”

Puetz, a 29-year-old data entry specialist at a local legal advertising firm, has the opportunity to help direct that process after being appointed by library trustees Wednesday to the open seat vacated by Gretchen Fritz.

to take a seat on the Will County Board.

Trustees Sharon Kinley, Patricia Miller, Crystal Andel and Vicki Knight voted to appoint Puetz.

Trustees Carl Gilmore and Samantha Hurtado were absent.

Puetz was appointed now Jason Puetz because he is expected to win Fritz’s vacated seat, since he faces no opposing candidate in April. Joining the board now can provide him with experience before the election.

“It seemed appropriate to appoint him for that position,” said Kinley, the board president. “He’s a fourth generation Plainfield person and he’s a very frequent visitor to the library. ... He’s very aware of new technology and how

libraries are using that technology.”

Puetz said he envisions a library with more space “more suited to the 21st century.”

The library is identifying whether and how a November 2016 referendum could expand the library’s space and utilities.

Puetz attended a special meeting last week when trustees approved a contract for an owner’s representative, which would examine and lead referendum efforts.

Trustees approved an amended contract with the firm Wednesday.

“As an active user of the library, I have strong feelings about what library services should and can be,” Puetz said.

“I already know what I like. I want to be able to express both my ideas and what I hear people are looking for.”

“Nothing is going to change,” Luciano said when asked if he would change his campaign strategy. “It’s not true that this puts me on the board. There’s still a period for write-in candidates.”

Plans moving forward for Crossroads Plaza

vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Local officials hope a redevelopment of the Anderson’s Crossroads Plaza jumpstarts economic development along the Route 52 corridor in Shorewood.

Burger King, Sparx Hair Studio, 7-Eleven and several other multi-tenant commercial buildings dot the major intersection at Routes 52 and 59.

The Crossroads Plaza on the northwest corner of the intersection, with undeveloped land and the outline of a demolished restaurant, isn’t particularly pleasing to the eye.

But members of the Anderson family, who have owned the property for three generations, have broken through on plans to redevelop the lot, getting approval from the Village Board last week.

“It’s a real exciting time,” said David Anderson, one of three brothers who has tried to finalize plans for the past

several years. “It’s taken a couple years to get the engineering and design approved. The state was our biggest obstacle.”

Anderson said plans to construct a one-story structure at the corner, reface the north and west buildings, and build an addition with a drive-thru were stalled because the family had to deal with a laborious approval process through the

Plans include leveling the nearby hill into a parking lot.

The intersection is close to the DuPage River, Hammel Woods County Forest Preserve and residential areas.

“Now we’re hoping to attract major retail, business and a fast food [restaurant] of

some type,” Anderson said.

“There was lots of discussion over the last couple of years.

Nobody committed because of the length of the process. But we’re now reaching back out to previous interested parties.”

One of those parties is Starbucks, which signed a letter of intent with the family a year ago. Anderson said that letter isn’t valid anymore, and

the family is talking with several coffee shops and other commercial businesses, and continuing discussions with Starbucks, about locating in Crossroads Plaza.

Anderson said construction is expected to start in the spring, and will likely take about 18 months.

The intersection of Toutes 52 and 59 is important to the village, Mayor Rick Chapman said, noting that the intersection and the DuPage River inspired the village’s logo.

“That entire corner and area is in our master plan for redevelopment,” Chapman said. “The Anderson family is the first one to step up to the plate and do some rebuilding.”

Chapman said there wasn’t any other redevelopment going on along the corridor, so he’s hoping the Crossroads Plaza will lead to more businesses setting up shop in Shorewood.

“I’d envision it as more of a commercial corner than it is right now,” Chapman said.

D91 Education Foundation members will run fundraisers and attract financial support to help the Lockport school district obtain needed items.

One item that is top priority for the foundation is paying for mobile science labs at

Milne Grove School.

“My background is very much hands-on, educational learning,” said Adam Woodworth, foundation president and former school board member. “It’s giving kids hands-on learning in the classroom.”

Woodworth, who also works as executive director for the Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn, said the foundation filed paperwork with the state and will apply for nonprofit status.

The foundation is part of the school district’s strategic plan, but Woodworth said it

is a separate entity tied to the school through its mission to serve it.

Jaime Koziol, Milne Grove Elementary School principal, said she was excited about the foundation.

“I live in the community and I’m blessed to work in the community,” she said. “I think it’s a good step that our school district has a foundation to look for creative or alternative funding for our education initiatives.”

The Morris City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved contracting with Homer Tree Service for the removal of 18 trees on airport property for $5,400. Airport liability insurance also was purchased from Global Aerospace for just under $13,800, the lowest bid.

The city plans to extend its north-south runway and taxiway to the north by 500 feet, making it 5,500 feet, to accommodate larger aircraft. Precision lights to make landings easier also are planned.

After the north-south runway is extended, the project includes widening the runway from 75 to 100 feet and overlaying it with more asphalt to accommodate heavier aircraft.

The runway extension is the first of many improvement projects scheduled in the next five years aimed at making the

airport more compatible with corporate jets.

The tree removal approved Tuesday will clear more space for the runway protection zone, which is a larger area required by the increased length in the future runway, Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday.

“We’re going to an instrument approach and a larger runway, and the trees pierce the approach pattern,” he said.

More than 30 trees have already been removed; Tuesday’s council action approved working with Homer Tree Service to remove 18 more.

“We’re happy to have Whitman Road done and the new bridge,” Alderman Julian Houston, Airport Committee chairman, said Wednesday.

As part of this project, the city had to obtain numerous parcels of land to accommodate the expansion. Whitman Road had to be extended west of Ashley Road with a bridge to provide homes on that road new access, since the airport work no longer allows them direct access to Route 47.

struction is expected to begin once the weather warms up, Houston said.

A March 3 preconstruction meeting is scheduled for the project, Kopczick said. The runway extension will be completed first and then officials will discuss whether the city should move forward with purchasing property for the future east-west runway or begin the widening and overlaying portion of the first runway project.

“If we do the widening and overlaying first, the airport has to be shut down for about a year,” Kopczick said.

“If we do the crosswind runway [east-west runway], it will stay open,” he said, “and then we can do the widening and overlay project and stay open because general aviation can use the east-west runway temporarily.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics must work with the Morris Airport on this decision.

“The airport is really in great shape and moving along really well,” Houston said.

“I know finances are always tight ... you’re trying to balance what the state is telling you, what you have to do and what you work with,” he said.

Teacher Helen Brandolino remembered for the music Ran Joliet music store with husband

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Even at Helen Brandolino’s funeral, her daughter was meeting some of her mother’s old piano students for the first time.

Brandolino died Jan. 16, and her funeral was Tuesday.

She was a longtime Joliet piano teacher who, with her husband, Sandro “Sandy” Brandolino, opened Brandolino’s West Side Music Center and ran the store for 36 years.

“There were people at the service at St. Anthony’s Church that came and told me, ‘You don’t know me, but your mom gave me piano lessons when you were [at the home] on Clement Street,’” Marianne Brandolino said.

Such comments were not uncommon.

“Oh my gosh, I run into so many people that she taught lessons to,” she said.

Sandy was probably the more familiar figure of the store’s husband-and-wife business team. Helen ran the financial side of the business and filled in when a piano teacher could not make it for a lesson, her daughter said.

The Brandolinos sold the store in 2007.

West Side Music Center no longer has the Helen Brandolino Brandolino name, but it still is in business at the same location, 1009 Jefferson St. “It was a very well-established business, and certainly people recognize the name,” said Mark Scherf, who bought the store.

The Brandolinos’ grandson, Bobby Brandolino, continues the family name in the music business today with Brandolino’s Encore Music store at 700 W. Jefferson St. in Shorewood.

“My mother was so proud of my nephew Bobby,” Marianne said. “Bobby worked hand-inhand with my dad.”

While Helen gave lessons at the store, she more frequently taught at the Brandolinos’ former home on Clement Street.

She also taught for three years at the old Joliet Conservatory of Music, Marianne said.

But her music lessons actually go back to her husband Sandy’s military service, when he was at an Air Force base in Michigan in the 1950s.

“My dad played in the U.S. Air Force band, and it was his dream to open a music store,” Marianne said. While Sandy played in the band, Helen gave piano lessons to Air Force officers and their wives.

Helen is survived by Sandy, along with five children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren include Joliet City Councilman Jim McFarland.

“My mother was an inspiration to all who knew her,” Marianne said. “She touched many lives with her kindness and warmth. She would light up a room with her loving and compassionate personality and smile.”

Neal said he doesn’t see a conflict of interest with his ongoing litigation with the Rialto and the Facebook group he created because it’s not a place to exclusively talk about the lawsuit.

Green said he has not been invited into the Facebook group, but he is aware of some of the comments people have made. He said the Rialto will pay attention to them.

“The more information we have, the better,” Green said.

Neal said he thinks Rialto management would be in “less of a pickle” if they established a social media discussion group to find out what people who attend and support the theater would be interested in.

JOLIET – The Facebook group “The Rialto Belongs to the People” has taken on a life of its own, says creator David Neal.

Neal, an Illinois Attorney General special prosecutor, is being sued by the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which governs the Rialto Square Theatre, for unpaid rent.

But he said he doesn’t see himself as the leader of a Facebook group that has become a gathering place for people who have protested the Rialto board’s decisions on the new planned marquee.

“It’s a place to make comments, suggestions, whatever, regarding the Rialto,” he said.

Some of its members – including administrators – are vocal critics of the Rialto’s plans for a new marquee, such as Mary Beth Gannon. Sara Wittchen, who created the GoFundMe fundraiser to support the Rialto, also is a member.

Neal said he created the group, which has more than

950 members, to give people a place to discuss the Rialto marquee issue separate from the conversations taking place on another Facebook page, called “You know you’re from Joliet if…”

The group’s purpose has also grown beyond the marquee. Neal said it’s a forum for people to raise money to support the Rialto and discuss theater events.

Gannon said the group’s initial goal was to raise public awareness about the marquee changes and spur public action.

“It started out that way, but we’re also looking at fundraising, that’s one of our things, and looking at ways to help the Rialto get in the black. We got a lot of ideas for what kind of shows could be there,” she said.

She said the group is always looking for more members.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green said he was aware of the Facebook group and thought Neal’s association with it was “very curious.”

New Coroner/Recorder of Deeds offices open

St. Patrick’s seeks to demolish old school

JOLIET – New locations for the Will County Coroner and Recorder of Deeds offices are now open.

On Tuesday, Will County Executive Larry Walsh and County Board leaders were joined by Coroner Pat O’Neil and Recorder of Deeds Karen Stukel to officially open the new offices at 158 N. Scott St. in downtown Joliet.

The Recorder of Deeds’ office has more appropriate space to serve residents who are conducting research, according to a news release from the county, while the coroner’s office has a more efficient space to accommodate additional storage and office needs.

The project was partially funded with revenue from the county’s gas-to-energy plant, which operates at the county-owned Prairie View landfill, according to the news release.

Numerous energy efficient features were used in the construction, including a high efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning system; LED lighting on the interior and exterior; and high recycled carpeting, flooring and ceiling tiles.

The archdiocese owns the building, adjacent to St. Patrick Church, 200 E. Illinois St. in Lemont, but needs village permission to demolish the building because it is in the historic district.

The Lemont Historic Preservation Commission is expected to rule on the request during its Feb. 12 meeting. If it denies the request, the archdiocese will have the right to appeal to the Lemont Village Board.

Kevin O’Malley, the archdiocesan facilities and construction director, said in an email the building has deteriorated since it was last occupied more than 10 years ago and is unusable and unsafe.

He said it would cost $1.25 million just to make the building safe, not accounting for renovating or modifying the interior.

There are no immediate plans for how the land would be used, he said.

Historical preservationists are concerned about the future of the former St. Patrick School, with a hole recently forming in the roof.

Preservationists have asked whether the archdiocese has tried selling the building and land to someone interested in repairing and preserving it.

However, O’Malley said in an email that “the archdiocese does not sell land or buildings that are vital to parish life. The proximity of this piece of land relative to the church would most definitely prohibit selling it.”

The matter is reminiscent of another building the archdiocese tried to demolish.

In 2013, the archdiocese had applied for a certificate of appropriateness to demolish a 19th-century house at 217 Cass Ave. to create a parking lot.

The historic preservation commission denied the certificate, but the Village Board approved it.

The deal between the house owner and the archdiocese to sell the house has since fallen through and the house remains standing.

She was the 3rd of four children born to Edward J. and Mildred Rice in Benton, Illinois.

Having graduated from Benton high school in 1948, she met her sweet heart Randall Parrish while working as a popcorn girl at the Star Movie Theater. They married on December 21, 1950, while he was home on leave from the Navy, and loved and cherished each other for 63 years, until Randall’s passing in May of 2013. Although she always saw herself primarily as a homemaker and mother, she held a variety of interesting and challenging jobs. She was a cosmetologist, and inspector at Uniroyal, and a real estate agent/ broker among others.

After retirement in 1990, she and Randall spent several years snow birding between Illinois and Arizona and this past 6 years as full time Arizona residents; Martha moved back to Illinois for this past year.

Reports: Saudi king dies at 90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, the powerful U.S. ally who joined Washington’s fight against al-Qaida and sought to modernize the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom with incremental but significant reforms, including nudging open greater opportunities for women, has died, according to Saudi state TV. He was 90.

More than his guarded and hidebound predecessors, Abdullah assertively threw his oil-rich nation’s weight behind trying to shape the Middle East. His priority was to counter the influence of rival, mainly Shiite Iran wherever it tried to make advances. He and fellow Sunni Arab monarchs also staunchly opposed the Middle East’s wave of pro-democracy uprisings, seeing them as a threat to stability and their own rule.

He backed Sunni Muslim factions against Tehran’s allies in several countries, but in Lebanon for example, the policy failed to stop Iranian-backed Hezbollah from gaining the upper hand. And Tehran and Riyadh’s colliding ambitions stoked proxy conflicts around the region that enflamed Sunni-Shiite hatreds – most horrifically in Syria’s civil war, where the two countries backed opposing sides.

Those conflicts in turn hiked Sunni militancy that returned to threaten Saudi Arabia.

And while the king maintained the historically close alliance with Washington, there were frictions as he sought to put those relations on Saudi Arabia’s terms. He was con-

Abdullah’s death was announced on Saudi state TV by a presenter who said the king died at 1 a.m. on Friday.

His successor was announced as 79-year-old half-brother, Prince Salman, according to a Royal Court statement carried on the Saudi Press Agency.

Salman was Abdullah’s crown prince and had recently taken on some of his responsibilities.

Abdullah was born in Riyadh in 1924, one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia’s founder, King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. Like all Abdul-Aziz’s sons, Abdullah had only rudimentary education. Tall and heavyset, he felt more at home

in the Nejd, the kingdom’s desert heartland, riding stallions and hunting with falcons. His strict upbringing was exemplified by three days he spent in prison as a young man as punishment by his father for failing to give his seat to a visitor, a violation of Bedouin hospitality.

Abdullah was selected as crown prince in 1982 on the day his half-brother Fahd ascended to the throne. The decision was challenged by a full brother of Fahd, Prince Sultan, who wanted the title for himself. But the family eventually closed ranks behind Abdullah to prevent splits.

Abdullah became de facto ruler in 1995 when a stroke incapacitated Fahd. Abdullah was believed to have long been irked at the closeness of the alliance with the United States, and as regent he pressed Washington to withdraw the troops it had deployed in the kingdom since the 1990 Iraqi

invasion of Kuwait. The U.S. finally did so in 2003.

When President George W. Bush came to office, Abdullah again showed his readiness to push against his U.S. allies.

In 2000, Abdullah convinced the Arab League to approve an unprecedented offer that all Arab states would agree to peace with Israel if it withdrew from lands it captured in 1967. The next year, he sent his ambassador in Washington to tell the Bush administration that it was too biased in favor of Israel and that the kingdom would from now on pursue its own interests apart from Washington’s. Alarmed by the prospect of a rift, Bush soon after advocated for the first time the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

The next month, the Sept.

11, 2001, terror attacks took place in the United States, and Abdullah had to steer the alliance through the resulting criticism. The kingdom was home to 15 of the 19 hijackers, and many pointed out that the baseline ideology for al-Qaida and other groups stemmed from Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.

When al-Qaida militants in 2003 began a wave of violence in the kingdom aimed at toppling the monarchy, Abdullah cracked down hard. For the next three years, security forces battled militants, finally forcing them to flee to neighboring Yemen. There, they created a new al-Qaida branch, and Saudi Arabia has played a behind-the-scenes role in fighting it.

When Fahd died in 2005, Abdullah officially rose to the throne.

Man who staged famed James Dean fight scene dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Frank Mazzola, the real-life tough guy who taught James Dean how to stage an authentic-looking knife fight for the classic 1955 film “Rebel Without a Cause,” has died at age 79.

Mazzola, who went on to a long career as a Hollywood film editor, died Jan. 13, Jaime Larkin, a spokeswoman for the Motion Picture and Televi-

sion Fund in Woodland Hills told the Los Angeles Times. He had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

He was by his own account a child actor turned street tough when he sneaked onto the set of “Rebel Without a Cause” after appearing in a small part in Dean’s previous film, “East of Eden.”

Mazzola so impressed director Nicholas Ray with his attitude and knowledge of youth

culture that he was hired as a consultant and given a small role.

He helped scriptwriter Stewart Stern work dozens of street slang expressions into the film, and Mazzola took Dean to meet the Athenians, the Hollywood street gang he hung with.

Mazzola’s group would teach the actor how to fight and walk tough. When it came time to choreograph the fa-

mous fight scene, Mazzola showed Dean how to hold a knife in one hand and wrap his jacket around the other like a real street fighter would to keep from being stabbed.

After a couple more small roles following “Rebel,” Mazzola launched a long career as a film editor. His credits include “The Hired Hand,” starring Peter Fonda, and the director’s cut of “Wild Side,” starring Christopher Walken.

Gov. Rauner has investment adviser, not blind trust

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner, perhaps the wealthiest officeholder in Illinois history, said just before taking office last week that he had set up “blind trust procedures” to shield himself from conflicts of interest with the extensive portfolio of investments he holds.

But the wealthy Republican did not set up a blind trust, instead granting administrative power over much of his money to an investment adviser with whom he can share financial information, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Experts say the plan is not as rigorous as a blind trust. A blind trust would have required Rauner – while remaining the beneficiary – to transfer his wealth to an independent trustee who would not disclose how the money is handled.

Instead, he gave power of attorney to handle his investments to Roundtable Investment Partners, in which Rauner is an investor.

He said all financial information would bypass him and go to Roundtable, which he said would provide him only with minimal information necessary to complete disclosure documents.

A true blind trust would be prohibited by Illinois ethics law, which requires officeholders to annually disclose their major holdings.

Rauner spokesman Lance Trover said the governor used the term “blind trust” to suggest the safeguards he was seeking.

It is not “feasible” for Rauner to use a true blind trust under ethics law, said Trover, who noted it could also block a politician’s assets from public scrutiny.

Education board wants $730M more pre-K-12 funding

SPRINGFIELD – With a new chairman at its helm, the Illinois State Board of Education Wednesday asked lawmakers to provide an additional $730 million for state schools in what could be one of the toughest budget years in Illinois history.

The board is asking for a 10.7 percent boost for schools in the state’s 857 districts. The board made the recommendation shortly after former state Sen. James Meeks, a Chicago Democrat who backed GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner in his gubernatorial bid over former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, was sworn in as chair.

Meeks, who replaces Quinn appointee Gery Chico, says boosting funding for schools is his top priority.

Illinois health law enrollment climbs past quarter-million

CHICAGO – Nearly 287,000 Illinois residents have signed up for private coverage under President Barack Obama’s health care law. The enrollment surpasses last year numbers, when about 217,000 Illinoisans signed up.

The Health and Human Services Department updated the Illinois tally Wednesday. The figure includes consumers who were automatically re-enrolled into their current plan or a plan with similar benefits.

There’s one month to go in the enrollment period. The Obama administration expects a surge of sign-ups near the Feb. 15 deadline. Illinois is one of 37 states served by the HealthCare. gov website where consumers

can shop for insurance and qualify for financial help. Ten health insurance companies are participating in Illinois.

By ALAN FRAM The Associated Press WASHINGTON – With thousands of abortion protesters swarming the city in their annual March for Life, Republicans muscled broadened abortion restrictions through the House on Thursday after a GOP rebellion forced leaders into an awkward retreat on an earlier version.

By a near party-line 242-179 vote, the House voted to permanently forbid federal funds for most abortion coverage.

The bill also would block tax credits for many people and employers who buy abortion coverage under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

A White House veto threat and an uncertain fate in the Senate mean the legislation has no realistic chance of becoming law. But on a day when crowds of anti-abortion demonstrators stretched for blocks outside Capitol windows – and hours after the embarrassing GOP stumble on another abortion measure – Thursday’s vote let party leaders signal that the Congress they now command is at least trying to end abortion.

The GOP’s passage of one bill and the abrupt derailment

of another forbidding most late-term abortions underscored the party’s perilous balancing act of backing abortion restrictions crucial to conservatives while not alienating women and younger voters wary of such restrictions.

Obama, out West to promote his State of the Union economic agenda, embraced the same 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion that the protesters were vilifying.

He said the decision in the Roe v. Wade case “reaffirms a fundamental American value: that government should not intrude in our most private and personal family matters.”

He said the House-passed bill would “intrude on women’s reproductive freedom and access to health care and unnecessarily restrict the private insurance choices that consumers have today.”

Republican House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio praised the marchers in a written statement that also seemed to acknowledge discord among Republicans.

“This march is part of a longer one, and our destination is clear: to secure and protect the rights of every unborn child.

When there is disagreement, we should pause and listen closely. When there is move-

ment, we should rejoice, and the House’s vote to ban taxpayer funding of abortion is cause for doing so,” he said.

Even so, the GOP sidetracking of the late-term abortion measure sparked grumbling from politically potent allies.

In a sharp statement that singled out Rep. Renee Ellmers, R-N.C., and others, National Right to Life President Carol Tobias criticized GOP dissenters on the late-term bill and warned, “Some of these lawmakers may ultimately conclude that they were ill advised to sacrifice the trust of their pro-life constituents so egregiously.”

Ellmers, who has had a strong anti-abortion voting record, was among those who had objected to portions of the late-term abortion bill. Her spokeswoman, Blair Ellis, declined to comment.

Dozens of protesters visited her Capitol Hill office Thursday to protest her role in scuttling that measure.

On the House floor, a debate that has raged virtually every year for decades was emotional, as usual.

“Abortion is not health care. It’s a brutal procedure that ends lives of unborn children,” said Rep. Joseph Pitts, R-Pa.

By AHMED AL-HAJ The Associated Press SANAA, Yemen – Yemen’s president resigned Thursday, saying he had reached a “deadlock” in talks with Shiite rebels who rule the capital and had confined him to his home. His resignation raised fears the Arab world’s poorest country could again split apart, severely complicating U.S. efforts to combat al-Qaida’s powerful local franchise.

after being pressured to make further concessions to the rebels, known as Houthis, who are widely believed to be backed by Iran, charges they deny.

Roberta Jacobson, the top U.S. diplomat for Latin America and the most senior American official to visit the island country in more than three decades, said the second day of wide-ranging talks in Havana were “positive and productive,” focusing on the mechanics of converting interest sections in each other’s capitals into full-fledged embassies headed by ambassadors.

Josefina Vidal, her Cuban counterpart, also praised the dialogue.

Both officials, however, outlined the obstacles to making a U.S.-Cuban relationship like that of any two other countries.

Jacobson spoke of America’s persistent human rights concerns in Cuba. Vidal cited Cuba’s status on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism and the various financial restrictions imposed on the country as a result of the U.S. trade embargo.

Nine families sued Remington and others in Bridgeport Superior Court in December arguing the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle used in the shooting should not have been sold for civilian use because of its overwhelming firepower. A 10th family joined the lawsuit adding a wrongful death claim.

The case was placed before U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny last week after Remington argued that since it is located in North Carolina and not Connecticut, federal court was a more proper jurisdiction.

Timothy Lytton, a professor at the Albany Law School who has written extensively about suing the gun industry, said getting the case into the 2nd U.S. Circuit, of which Connecticut is a part, is a victory for the defendants.

“The 2nd Circuit has previously refused to hold gun manufacturers liable or permit lawsuits against gun manufacturers for injuries caused by third parties,” he said. “It has a history of knocking these types of cases down.”

BAGHDAD – Iraqi commanders heavily dependent on outside support to defeat the Islamic State group are increasingly voicing frustration over the U.S.led coalition’s efforts, complaining of miscommunication, failed deliveries of weapons, inadequate training and differences in strategy.

Speaking to The Associated Press this week, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said, “We want to see an acceleration of the training, acceleration of the delivery of arms” from foreign allies.

Al-Abadi complained that Iraq is “left almost alone to get these arms and munitions for the army, for our fighters, and we expect much more.”

At the same time, he reiterated that his government does not want any foreign boots on the ground, and he acknowledged that coalition airstrikes had been “very, very effective.”

Leaders of the coalition stressed its successes at a London meeting Thursday, with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry saying that nearly 2,000 airstrikes had helped ground forces retake 270 square miles of territory, kill 50 percent of Islamic State commanders and choked off some of the group’s oil revenue.

Anders Lindall, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County Municipal Employees Council 31, said Rauner was using numbers that are inaccurate and in some cases outdated. He said public union employees are not the cause of

the state’s challenges.

AFSCME, the state’s largest public-employee union, is set to begin negotiations with Rauner’s administration on a new contract.

“The type of misleading statement and false facts we see today are not an encouraging first step you want to see from someone who is truly

trying to work together for the common good,” Lindall said.

Rikeesha Phelon, spokeswoman for Senate President John Cullerton, said the Chicago Democrat wants to see how Rauner’s statements translate into legislative policy and a proposed budget.

Rauner is scheduled to deliver his budget address on Feb. 18, two weeks after his State of the State.

But Cullerton clearly wasn’t pleased after Rauner ripped legislators in his inaugural speech for leading Illinois into a budget disaster, saying afterward that many of the new governor’s comments were inaccurate and that he “is going to have to learn about state government.”

Rauner on Thursday also named new members of what he’s calling his “Turnaround Team” – people he said have experience in budgeting and management. They include former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican who will serve as senior adviser.

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday began laying out priorities for his first year in office, saying property taxes and workers’ compensation costs are too high, Medicaid spending is unsustainable and state workers’ salaries and benefits are too generous.

In a speech he said was a preview of the State of the State address he’ll give next month, the Winnetka Republican said Illinois is in “massive deterioration mode.”

He said he will propose a number of reforms to turn the state around, and indicated they would involve making Illinois more attractive to businesses while slashing spending on everything from health insurance for the poor to public-worker pensions and the state’s payroll.

“This is the critical lesson that we’re seeing: We’re on an

unsustainable path,” Rauner told students at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. “We need fundamental structural change and raising taxes alone ... isn’t going to fix the problem, and in a lot of ways, it’s going to make it worse.”

While he didn’t outline specific proposals, many of Rauner’s ideas are likely to draw heavy opposition from majority Democrats and even some fellow Republicans in the General Assembly, as well as public-employee labor unions.

He said higher-than-average costs of workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance are driving businesses out of the state, property taxes are “brutally high” and “shenanigans” in the public-employee pension system have made Illinois’ multibillion-dollar pension debt “a time bomb for taxpayers.”

No respect? Get rid of the office

If comedian Rodney Dangerfield were still alive, he would sympathize with the office of Illinois lieutenant governor. Like Dangerfield, the office “don’t get no respect.”

It started with the drafters of the 1970 Illinois Constitution.

That document, under which we live today, set forth six constitutional offices: governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and comptroller.

If the attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer or comptroller posts become vacant, the constitution mandates that the governor appoint replacements.

If the governor post becomes vacant, the constitution directs that the lieutenant governor take charge.

But, if the lieutenant governor office becomes vacant, the constitution is mum. No provisions were set forth to name a replacement.

That’s strange, indeed, given that a vacancy crops up every once in awhile.

During the past 50 years, Illinois has had 10 lieutenant governors, and three of them vacated the office during their terms. Two – Samuel Shapiro in 1968 and Pat Quinn in 2009 – ascended to the governorship.

One – Dave O’Neal in 1981 – resigned.

The vacancy lasted nearly eight months after Shapiro departed, more than 19 months after O’Neal quit, and almost two years after Quinn left to take over for the ousted Rod Blagojevich.

The new law approved in the waning days of Quinn’s administration addresses the unusual situation of the full-term vacancy in the comptroller’s office because of the death of Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka last month, after she won a second term but before she could be sworn in.

tional offices if the vacancy would be at least 28 months before the next statewide election.

Offices affected are attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and comptroller.

Again, possible lieutenant governor vacancies are not addressed.

The newest oversight likely can be traced to the constitution’s failure to provide a means to fill the vacancy by appointment. If you can’t fill it by appointment in the first place, bill drafters probably reasoned, how can you fill it by special election?

Looking back half a century, Illinois’ political elite have found themselves befuddled by the office more than once.

In 1968, Illinoisans elected a Republican governor, Richard Ogilvie, and a Democratic lieutenant governor, Paul Simon. That fractious anomaly was corrected in the 1970 Constitution, which required each party’s gubernatorial and lieutenant governor nominees to run as a team in the general election.

In 2010, Chicago pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. Although he was talked into resigning the nomination, it was an embarrassment that caused the Legislature to approve a law that requires candidates for party nominations for governor to name their lieutenant governor running mates before the primary.

It’s clear that the office has been a nuisance at times, which may be the reason politicians don’t mind much if it happens to be empty.

What new Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti does with the position is up to her and Gov. Bruce Rauner.

But if the office is to remain a constitutional afterthought, perhaps it’s time to give it some “respect” – a means to fill vacancies, along with giving it real responsibilities – or do away with it.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield South’s wrestling team has already accomplished a lot this season but the program wants to make more history before the season ends.

With a win over Oswego today, the Cougars earn at least a share of their second straight Southwest Prairie Conference title. Then early next month, South hopes to capture its first regional championship against a tough field featuring Minooka, Moline and Yorkville.

Coach Jason Acevedo’s Cougars completed a sweep of District 202 schools Thursday after winning eight of the first nine matches to claim a 56-20 SPC victory at Plainfield North.

“We obviously want to repeat in the conference, but the ultimate goal is to win the regional championship,” Acevedo said. “So everything that we’re doing like working on technique and cleaning things up is for the state series push.

After North’s Luke Smiley beat Daniel Escobar, 13-0, in the opener at 132 pounds, the Cougars answered with falls from Andrew Bonner, Liam Hannon and Joe Miner.

“We’ve really been working hard since the summer,” Miner said. “We’re just a really big family and we practice hard every single day. Then we go out and win on the mat and that’s all that matters.”

South extended its advantage to 36-4 after Derek Biliskov recorded a fall at 170 and Adrian Cervantes and Andy Gastelum bookended that pin with forfeit victories.

“I’m really happy with the way that things have gone this year,” Biliskov said. “Every year our team has taken steps forward and that’s a tribute to the coaches. From our best wrestlers to the younger guys, we’re solid across the board.”

The next four matches featured state-ranked competitors and to their opponents’ credit in the contested matches, two went the distance and none ended with a pin.

After South’s Danny Saracco won by technical fall at 195, teammate Eric Johnson only led Leo Santos 1-0 going into the final period before claiming a 6-0 victory.

“We’ve been working hard this season and everyone

is doing their job,” Saracco said. “We definitely want to be a state-qualifying team. So we’re going to keep wrestling like we’ve been and keep pushing each other in the room.”

The Tigers won the next three as Nick Wolf defeated Nate Karas, 10-1, in the heavyweight match, Marcus Povlick claimed a forfeit win and Tyler Myers added a pin.

“This year has been a step in the right direction and we’re building with the kids that we have,” Tigers coach Jeff Kastel said. “We see it from the beginning of the season and from match to match.

We’re looking to get two or three kids to state and two of them placing.”

South closed with two more victories as Marc Fleenor received a forfeit win at 120 and Erik Santiago wrapped things up by collecting his team’s fifth pin.

“We’re tough as individuals and that plays into the team aspect when it comes to tournaments,” Fleenor said.

“We’ve been a young team the past couple of years but we’ve grown with each other. We’re all good in our own ways so we can help each other.”

Plainfield North senior helps U-18 U.S. women’s team take gold

Fifteen years of hard work sometimes leads to great things. That’s particularly the case for Mikaela Gardner.

The Plainfield North senior was a member of the U.S. women’s team that took gold at the Under-18 Women’s World Championship on Jan. 12 at Harbor Center in Buffalo, New York.

“It was so exciting,” Gardner said. “Being able to just jump over those boards and throw your gloves up and finally being able to say that the U.S. was the number one team out of the whole world in our age group, that’s awesome.”

To finish best in the world, the U.S. went undefeated, beating Russia, 7-1, and the Czech Republic twice, 3-0 and 5-0. Even more exciting, the U.S. opened and closed the tournament by overcoming rival Canada, 2-1 in overtime and 3-2 in the final game.

The Canada games stood apart from the rest because of the intensity in the rink and the support from the crowd.

More than 2,000 people came to watch both games and hearing people chant U-S-A energized the girls. After the victories, the team got the celebrity treatment as fans asked them to autograph tickets and take photographs.

Beating Team Canada at any level is a huge accomplishment because it is the biggest rival in women’s hockey. The two teams are always evenly matched in talent.

“They’re a great team to play against,” Gardner said.

“They’re very talented. It’s pretty back and forth, but there’s a pretty big rivalry. It doesn’t matter what age, you want to beat them because you want to prove that you’re the best team, but at the same time, you respect them.

They’re players just like you and they’re good opponents and very talented.”

In October, Gardner was invited to a weeklong camp with 10 other girls her age to see how well they played together. Weeks after the Denver camp, the Ohio State-bound Gardner was offered a spot on the U-18 team.

“That was a big moment, making the team,” Gardner said. “I hoped that it was going to happen, but I kind of had my doubts. There’s so many other talented girls, but it finally came true. I was so excited. Not just for the fact that I made it but being able to put on the USA jersey and knowing that in a way that you’re representing the country, which is so cool to me. I was totally blessed to be given that opportunity.”

PHYSICAL STYLE

Since she played on the Gold-medal team, Gardner is considered to be one of the top eight defense players of her age in the country. Gardner and her Chicago Mission coach Tony Cachey attribute

this to her physical style of play.

Gardner has a strong body and is hard to push off the puck, which is important for someone who plays defense.

She’s good at positioning herself defensively, is a smart player and also can play strong offensively.

For the U-18 team, her main focus was on being strong and playing smart defense – making good plays, good passes, breaking out of the zone, positioning and not letting the other team get a good scoring opportunity. Her grit helped her make the team, but Cachey says that something else makes her stand out.

“More importantly than being a good hockey player, she’s a great kid,” Cachey said. “She works really hard at practice. Her will to compete is higher than other players, and she’s extremely coachable. She takes coaching, absorbs it and runs with it. She has a high skill level, competes really hard, works really hard, wants to win and when you combine all of that,

you have a special player.”

Her strong work ethic comes from her strong passion for the game. When she was three, Gardner watched U.S. Olympic captain Cammi Granato play at a charity event for Ronald McDonald. Watching Granato play sparked an interest in her.

“After the game I said, ‘Mom, I’m going to play hockey,’ ”Gardner said. “Cammi Granato was so nice. My mom knew her mom through work so she gave me her signed Olympic gloves. I grew up knowing that I wanted to be her. She was so good with me.

She would always talk to me, and if I ever saw her, she’d always come say hi and ask how I was doing. That was pretty much the person that made me realize that I wanted to do this when I’m older.”

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

From that point on, she stuck with hockey. Now that she is older, Gardner has played for the Chicago Mission team for three years. Last year, the Mission, which cur-

rently is ranked first nationally, finished third among 16 teams at nationals. This year, they want to take it all.

To make it to nationals, they have to win state and regionals, but every win leading up to that is important. At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Mission will play CYA at Seven Bridges Woodridge in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.

Even though Gardner is focusing her attention on her play with the Mission, sometimes it’s nice to look back at a big accomplishment.

“Four, five, six years ago I never would’ve thought that I would be where I am,” Gardner said. “It wouldn’t be without tremendous help from all of my coaches and my parents.

“To be on the U-18 team was my ultimate goal, so being able to reach that goal meant everything paid off.

Everything that my parents have done, everything that my coaches have done for me and everything that I’ve worked for has finally paid off.”

COAL CITY – Jerry McDowell has spent lots of time on a baseball diamond. Between Coal City Middle School and Coal City High School, he has been coaching for 52 seasons. And, in this day and age, a coach doesn’t stick around that long unless he is successful.

On Saturday, the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame will honor McDowell’s success by inducting him at a dinner held at the Westin Yorktown Center in Lombard. Joining McDowell in the Class of 2015 will be Joliet Catholic’s Jared Voss (who was featured earlier in the Herald-News), Paul Hoel of Hinsdale South, Todd Hopkins of Ottawa Marquette, Denny Short of Waubonsie Valley and Brian Wujcik of Oak Lawn Richards.

McDowell has been coaching the Coalers since the spring of 1996 and also has been the coach at Coal City Middle School since 1988, having started his career at Gardner Grade School in 1984.

In that time, he has amassed a 1,028-374 record, getting his 1,000th win last year when Coal City beat Illiana Christian on April 23. His Coal City Middle School teams won state titles in 1996, 1997 and 2013, while the Coalers advanced to the Class A state tournament in 2002 and the state finals in Class 2A in 2008, finishing fourth.

Being the head coach means McDowell stresses the team before the individual, and he is quick to give credit to his players and coaching staff. Greg Wills has been his assistant for all 20 years at the high school, while Nate Wills has been the sophomore coach at Coal City for nine years and has been his assistant at the middle school for 12.

“It’s definitely an honor,” he said about his induction.

“I am pretty ecstatic about it.

We’re able to teach them how we want them to play from day one.

“One other person I couldn’t have done this without is [former Coal City athletic director] John Cullick. He was instrumental in me coming to Coal City, and has been

supportive ever since I got here. And, of course, my wife, Bonnie. She’s the one that takes our kids to their practices and stuff like that, since I am usually at a game or practice of my own.”

McDowell is a man who never tires of baseball. One would think that after coaching a middle school season in the fall and a high school season in the spring, he might

welcome a chance to not look at a baseball for a while. So far, that hasn’t happened.

“It’s a long season,” he admits. “You start the high school season in March, and that goes through June. Then there’s the summer season, and that’s June and July. Then the middle school starts in August and goes into September and, if you are lucky, October.

There’s only three months off

without baseball, but the kids will start itching to throw a ball around in February or so.

“I do love it. It’s become part of my routine, and I love doing it. I hope that it rubs off on some of the kids I coach.”

Coal City athletic director Dan Hutchings has had an interesting perspective on McDowell for the past year or so.

After working with him in the athletic department for many years, Hutchings has a son, Payton, playing for McDowell at the middle school.

“What I like about Jerry as a member of the athletic department is that he has a laid-back style, and he preaches small ball,” Hutchings said.

“In order to play that type of baseball, you have to be wellschooled in the fundamentals.

“What I like about Jerry as a parent is that he preaches fundamentals. If you do those little things right, the big things will take care of themselves.”

McDowell’s teams have had success against big-name pitchers in the past, as well.

Tanner Roark of Wilmington now pitches for the Washington Nationals. When he was in high school, his record in four years against Coal City was 4-4. In his senior year, Wilmington went 40-1. The one loss was to Coal City. Another current big-leaguer, J.A. Happ, pitched for Spring Valley Hall, and McDowell’s team beat him 10-0.

It’s those fundamentals that helped his clubs beat those pitchers, and they come into play much more now with the way the game has changed because of equipment. The day of the live ball and bat are over, and the emphasis is more in manufacturing runs.

“Back in 2001 and 2002, we were hitting 45 to 50 home runs as a team,” McDowell said. “This year, I think we hit three in junior high and six all year in high school. You can’t just wait for the home run any more. You have to be able to move runners over and take advantage when the other team makes mistakes.”

Better yet, he is shooting .517 from the field, 507 (36 of 71) on 3-pointers and .843 from the free throw line. He is a two-time winner of the Mount West Player of the Week award and is averaging 25.0 points in his past five games.

If Marks doesn’t make the NBA, he should at least be in camp with someone before next season begins.

Holmes and Ward, who were high school teammates, squared off Wednesday night in a Mid-American Conference game, and Holmes posted his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in Bowling Green’s 74-58 win over Eastern Michigan. Ward finished nine points and five rebounds.

Holmes is averaging 28.7 minutes, 14.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and is shooting .559 from the field, .400 on threes (6 of 15) and .699 from the free throw line. Ward is averaging 31.5 minutes,

Moore is playing 26.4 minutes a game at SMU and is averaging 8.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 blocks. He is shooting .452 from the field and .696 from the free throw line.

Bennett is averaging 29.6 minutes, 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting .520 from the floor for Cal Poly.

The way these five are producing on the D-I level indicates something good is happening in Joliet area boys basketball, despite the criticisms.

Speaking of the return of celebrities who make our sports banquets fun, Joliet Catholic graduate Mark Grant, himself a former major league pitcher, will return as master of ceremonies for the Joliet Catholic Alumni Association Hilltopper Banquet on Feb. 12 in the school’s Activity Center.

The guest speaker, as announced in Sunday’s Herald-News, will be 16-year NHL veteran and current Blackhawks TV color analyst Eddie Olczyk.

The JCA sports banquet was revived last year in a new format, and professional golfer Paul Azinger was the guest speaker.

“We want to ride the Blackhawks momentum,” said Sue Bebar, JCA director of alumni relations. “Last year was a big success. We had about 450 at the banquet and we hope to get that many again.”

Boys basketball in the Joliet area sometimes gets a bad rap.

Among the criticisms is the lack of good big men in recent years. Yet, if you focus on NCAA Division I, the highest level, we could form quite an all-star team of collegiate talent from our area.

Our starting five, all major contributors to their teams, would look like this: Derrick Marks (Plainfield Central), Boise State, 6-foot-3, senior, guard; Richaun Holmes (Lockport), Bowling Green State, 6-8, senior, forward; Karrington Ward (Lockport), Eastern Michigan, 6-7, senior, forward; Ben Moore (Bolingbrook), SMU, 6-8, sophomore, forward; Brian Bennett (Plainfield East), Cal Poly, 6-9, junior, forward.

SMU is 15-4, Bowling Green 12-4, Boise State 13-6, Eastern Michigan 12-6 and Cal Poly 8-8. So our guys do have a shot at playing in the postseason, perhaps a couple in the NCAA Tournament.

Two Plainfield boys dance with Chicago BullsKidz

LAINFIELD – During timeouts and halftime at Bulls’ games – among the dunks, dribbles and blocks – a different type of athletic performance takes place.

This one involves dance, agility, incredible determination and skill, with performers at least half the age of those in the NBA. The Chicago BullsKidz are a group of talented, high-energy boys and girls ages 7 to 14 who perform at several regular season games with upbeat dance routines. More than 100 children try out annually to be a part of the team and two of this year’s dancers – 11-year-old Darius Vazifdar and 11-year-old Matthew Wengielnik – hail from Plainfield.

“It’s hard but it’s fun,” Matthew said.

Matthew started dancing four years ago, after attending Darius’ dance show at the Rialto Square Theatre and thinking to himself, “That’s really cool, I want to do that!”

He began at the Joliet x-3 Dance Studio and has since moved on to Plainfield’s Revolution Dance Studio.

Last year, he worked up the courage to try out for the Bulls squad and – much to his glee – got the call to join.

“I was really excited, it felt great to be picked,” Matthew said. “At first, I was really nervous, but once I got out there, I forgot that there were 22,000 people watching.”

Matthew said he wants to continue dancing in the future. He isn’t sure where it will to take him, but he’s sure he’s going to enjoy it.

“I like the feeling of being able to work hard and do things that are awesome,” Matthew said. “It feels really good to do it.”

The troupe is on hand for weekend and holiday games throughout the season, from September through the end of the playoffs in May or June, performing during time-outs and stoppages in play.

Practices are on weekends at Studio 22 High Tech in Niles, which can be a bit of a haul for some families, but there are no complaints.

“The kids and their families are extremely dedicated to their art and to the performances,” said Shante Roberts, dance team coordinator for the BullsKidz. “A lot of the kids have had prior dance training and some have been dancing a while, which makes them more comfortable in the live setting. But just in general they all do a terrific job.”

One of the best parts about the program, Roberts added, is that the kids learn about teamwork, dedication and cooperation. That’s especially

useful for Darius, who studies a variety of dance at several different studios, including the Plainfield Dance Academy, and aspires to one day dance on Broadway.

“I always liked the Bulls as a kid,” said Darius, who’s been dancing since he was 4 and competing since he was 6, “so I figured I’d give it a try.”

Darius’ mother, Annette Vazifdar of Plainfield, feels BullsKidz pushes Darius to keep developing both skill and confidence.

“When your son says, ‘Hey, I want to end up on Broadway,’ ” Vazifdar said, “BullsKidz allowed him to see there is bigger things out there.”

Darius said the BullsKidz experience is so good, he’d liked to see more kids audition for it and not worry if they make it or not. Not landing a role doesn’t mean one isn’t a good dancer, he said, nor is it a reason to give up.

“It just means that someone else was better than you,” Darius said.

Declarer should discard a club from his hand at trick one, draw the missing trumps, play a club to his ace (maybe West has a singleton king), cross to dummy with a trump and discard his last two clubs on the pair of heart winners.

Then he ruffs a club in his hand.

If the clubs are 3-2, South plays a trump to dummy, ruffs another club, leads a diamond to dummy’s ace, and pitches his last diamond on the now-high club seven.

In truth, the risk of opioid addiction among people with chronic pain is low.

But there are exceptions.

Some people are born with a greater tendency to become addicted. Anyone with a personal or family history of drug abuse or mental illness is at increased risk of addiction.

If you haven’t already done so, discuss with your doctor your treatment goals, how to take the medication safely and what side effects you can expect.

Dear Doctor K: My doctor has prescribed prescription painkillers – opioids – for my severe back pain.

They relieve my pain, but how can I reduce my risk of becoming hooked?

Dear Reader: Simply being aware of the risk of addiction is a good first step in ensuring that you do not become addicted to prescription painkillers.

I’ll explain a little bit about painkillers. Then I’ll describe some steps you can take to prevent addiction.

Opiates are natural painkillers. They come from the seedpod of the Asian opium poppy plant.

They include opium, morphine and codeine. Your brain also makes its own natural painkillers, called endorphins.

Opioids are created by man-made chemical modifications of opiates.

Examples of opioids include heroin, oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet) and hydrocodone (Vicodin).

Opiates and opioids are very effective painkillers.

They bind to a group of receptors called opioid receptors. It’s like a lock and key: The opiate or opioid is the “key,” and when it attaches to a receptor (the “lock”), your pain is lessened. There are opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord and in the gut.

They also are on the white blood cells that are a key part of the immune system.

We’re not sure what they do in the gut, or on white blood cells.

The natural painkillers that your brain makes (endorphins) also attach to these receptors. When a person is badly injured, the brain releases these natural painkillers to try to reduce the pain.

Opiates and opioids reduce the intensity of pain signals reaching the brain and reduce feelings of pain.

They can also produce a feeling of well-being and euphoria.

Most doctors consider it appropriate to prescribe opioids for chronic pain caused by cancer or for end-of-life pain. But the
