JOLIET – The mayor is taking resumes for the Rialto Square Theatre board, opening up the possibility of an appointment from the group that opposed and blocked a theater marquee already in construction.

Mayor Tom Giarrante announced that he would take resumes after a member of the “Rialto Belongs to the People” Facebook group spoke at the Tuesday City Council meeting and urged him to put one of his colleagues on the board.

Giarrante said he was going to make the announcement anyway because his choice for the board, former City Manager Thomas Thanas, has declined to take the position.

“So, I’m going to open it up,” Giarrante said.

He will take resumes starting Wednesday through Jan. 28 and wants resumes delivered to his office at City Hall.

The leading candidate from the “Rialto Belongs to the People” group is Mary Beth Gannon, who said later she would apply. Gannon came to a City Council meeting two weeks ago asking why she was not being considered for the opening. Giarrante said Tuesday he would consider Gannon for the position.

Gannon was at the meeting and said later when asked about Giarrante’s statements, “He said I’m going to get an interview, so I’m going to hold him to it and hope I get a fair chance” In another Rialto devel-

opment, Councilman Bob O’Dekirk agreed to set up a meeting that would include the council, the Rialto board and members of the “Rialto Belongs to the People” group.

O’Dekirk, who last week said he believed Gannon should be reconsidered for the board, is the council liaison to the Rialto board.

The meeting was urged by Ronald Gruber, another member of the “Rialto Belongs to the People” group. Gruber delivered a lengthy statement, calling for his group to have more influence in the future of the Rialto.

“I can assure everyone that we are not going away,” Gruber said.

Joliet City Council eyes new public comment rules; citizen concerned

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A citizen who called for rules on public comments at City Council meetings said the city is going too far with its proposal.

“What they did is bastardize it,” said John Sheridan, a facilitator with the Cunningham Neighborhood Council.

Sheridan nearly a year ago suggested an ordinance governing things such as public comments at council meetings. But he said Tuesday the proposed ordinance gives too much control to Mayor Tom Giarrante.

Giarrante said he had no influence on the proposal and did not see it until it was completed.

New City Attorney Martin Shanahan, who started on the job two weeks ago, said he wrote the proposed rules on his own based on ordinances used in other communities.

“I pulled from maybe a dozen or so other towns,” Shanahan said. “That’s where these ideas come from.”

“They’re fixing it so he [the mayor] is totally in charge and taking all control out of the council.”

“Absolutely not,” Giarrante said when asked if he had any influence on the proposed ordinance. “Everybody saw it at the same time.”

The proposed ordinance is set to be reviewed by the Joliet City Council Land Use and Legislative Committee when it meets at 3 p.m.

Wednesday in council chambers at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St. What appears to be at issue is a rule requiring comments be addressed to the entire council and not to individuals – such as the mayor, a council member or a staff member, such as Shanahan. Sheridan also wants

council input before a speaker is ruled out of order.

The matter was brought up at the Tuesday meeting of the City Council, and a few council members said they would not support the rule requiring comments be addressed to the full council only.

Sheridan said a resident should have the opportunity to address individuals with permission from the mayor or whoever is presiding over the council.

He also wants the council to have a vote to overrule the mayor; in cases where the mayor limits a speaker’s comments.

“They’re fixing it so he [the mayor] is totally in charge and taking all control out of the council,” Sheridan said.

Shanahan said some of his proposals are aimed at avoiding debates between citizens and the council at meetings.

“It’s public comment – not public debate,” he said.

He also noted that his proposal can be changed if the council wants. But as to authorship, he was emphatic.

“This is mine,” Shanahan said.

The “Rialto Belongs to the People” group developed in opposition to a marquee that was announced in November.

The marquee featured a digital board and a memorial to the parents of Ed Czerkies, a retired businessman who had donated $350,000 for the marquee.

After weeks of controversy, Czerkies pulled his donation.

But sign construction had already started, the Rialto has put $120,000 into the project, and the board is trying to decide what to do next.

Gruber said the “Rialto Belongs to the People” group has raised $6,700 in a GoFundMe. com campaign and has another $4,000 in assets available.

Joliet friends, neighbors and customers remember slain store clerk Police seeking assistance

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com and BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The death of Mohammad Eid shocked and saddened dozens of his friends, neighbors and customers of the Gardner Food Mart in Joliet, where he worked until he was killed Monday in a botched armed robbery.

Those who loved him gathered outside the Joliet store near Nowell Park on a cold Tuesday evening to pay their respects to Eid, who knew many of them by name, including the neighborhood children. As they decorated the store’s entrance with lit candles, flowers, teddy bears and signed posters, they cried and comforted each other.

Megan Cooper of Joliet urged the crowd to stop the violence. She encouraged them to look out for one another and do something positive.

“Don’t let all the good he’d done go in vain,” she said.

Eid, 24, was shot and killed during an armed robbery attempt Monday afternoon at Gardner Food Mart, 1000 Gardner St., Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said. One suspect died after the attempted robbery while another remained at large Tuesday.

Throughout Tuesday, patrons and those who knew Eid came by to decorate the store entrance in his honor. At night, they held a vigil, where they prayed and sang.

Joliet Central High School student Jesus Alvarez said Eid would always ask him to hand him a bag of chips when he came into the store and he would always call his mom “Mama.”

“He would always smile at me. He used to call my mom, ‘Mama.’ ‘What’s up, Mama.’

He was nice with all the kids,” he said.

Botched robbery

Earlier Tuesday, Rodolfo Vasquez, 47, of Joliet said Eid was a good guy who would give items to the neighborhood children, such as candy and chips. Vasquez came to the

store in the morning to hang a small cross at the entrance.

“He is going to be dearly missed,” Vasquez said. “He helped the neighborhood kids.”

James Edward, 75, of Joliet pulled up to the store parking lot in his car Tuesday and was surprised to learn of Eid’s death. He said he spoke Monday morning with Eid at the store, where he goes to play the lottery.

Norris and another man were both covering their faces with hoods from their sweatshirts and masks when they walked into the store about 3:15 p.m. Monday, police said.

Both robbers were armed, Benton said.

Eid got a handgun from under the counter and exchanged gunfire with the robbers, Benton said. The store has interior and exterior surveillance cameras.

Eid was shot in the chest and thumb, Benton said, while one of the robbers also was

shot in the chest area. A Joliet Fire Department ambulance took Eid to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Norris fled and was later dropped off at the medical center, where he also died, Benton said. Detectives questioned two people early Tuesday about taking Norris to the hospital, but do not believe they were involved in the robbery.

One customer “came in and out” while a friend of Eid’s was “hanging out in the back stockroom” during the incident, which lasted less than two minutes, Benton said.

According to the Department of Corrections, Norris of Joliet was scheduled to complete parole Wednesday for aggravated battery and drug possession convictions.

While serving time at the Illinois River Correctional Center in 2013, Norris was charged with 16 counts of money laundering and fraud. He was allegedly among a ring of more than 15 people who ripped off Joliet banks by withdrawing money at ATMs and having money orders issued from the same accounts before the insufficient funds were discovered, according to investigators.

Norris was scheduled for a pretrial hearing on those charges next month.

“Look at the facts of the situation. When people analyze the original G.I. bill, you see the investment in education with people coming back home from World War II,” Foster said. “Over time, you saw higher salaries.

They paid more taxes. It’s a [wise investment].”

Critics, including U.S. Rep Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said Obama’s tone seemed more combative toward Republicans than he’s seen in past State of the Union addresses, perhaps because in the past he had faced future elections.

“He seemed very combative tonight,” Kinzinger said.

“I didn’t sense a lot of: ‘Hey, you guys won the election; let’s see how we can work together.’ ” Kinzinger disagreed with Obama’s assessment that

the “shadow of crisis” has passed in the national economy. The economy has certainly improved, but the crisis has not passed, he said.

“The middle class is still suffering, and it has more under this president than any other,” Kinzinger said.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, said he hopes the next two years are productive. He called for bipartisanship in passing

comprehensive tax reform.

Lipinksi said he was “happy to hear” of Obama’s push for more funding for infrastructure and transportation projects.

But Lipinkski said he was equally concerned about Obama’s push to renew fasttrack trade authority, which allows Obama to sidestep Congress in many ways in negotiat ing trade agreements.

WASHINGTON – Refusing to bend to the new Republican Congress, President Barack Obama unveiled Tuesday night an ambitious State of the Union agenda steeped in Democratic priorities, including tax increases on the wealthy, education and child care help for the middle class and a torrent of veto threats for the GOP’s own plans.

In a shift from tradition, Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress was less a laundry list of new proposals and more an attempt to sell a story of national economic revival. He appealed for “better politics” in Washington and pledged to work with Republicans, but he showed few signs of curtailing or tweaking his own plans to meet GOP priorities.

Instead, the president vowed to use his veto pen to strike down the Republican leadership’s efforts to dismantle his signature accomplishments, including his health care and financial reform laws.

“We can’t put the security of families at risk by taking away their health insurance or unraveling the new rules on Wall Street or refighting past battles on immigration when we’ve got a system to fix,” Obama said. “And if a bill comes to my desk that tries to do any of these things, I will veto it.”

Walter Strawn crossing shutdown causes concern Closing set for Jan. 28

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Local highway department heads are concerned about the pending Jan. 28 shutdown of Walter Strawn Drive – one of the main entryways trucking companies use to access two intermodal industrial parks in Elwood and Joliet.

“It’s going to be a nightmare,” said Bruce Gould, Will County highway engineer, who said the move means Interstate 55 and the county-owned Arsenal Road will be inundated with semitrailers trying to enter and exit the intermodals.

The Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing must be closed by Jan. 28, after the Illinois Commerce Commission ruled last week the crossing is too dangerous to remain open while a permanent solution to safety hazards can be found.

A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation said Tuesday the shutdown is tentatively planned for Jan. 28, weather permitting. CenterPoint Properties, the developer of both intermodals, along with trucking and logistics companies, oppose the shutdown.

Grain haulers carrying up to 88,000 pounds can use Arsenal Road, but others can only haul up to a maximum of 80,000 pounds, Gould said, not-

Another alternative is Laraway Road, but Joliet prohibits trucks from entering the Joliet intermodal when heading south on the adjacent CenterPoint Way, rendering that route unusable.

Joliet officials have not considered allowing semitrailers to enter the intermodals from the north for a simple reason, said Jim Trizna, the city’s public works director.

City officials do not want Joliet to end up like Elwood, which has dealt with almost-daily traffic congestion from truckers accessing the intermodals via Walter Strawn.

“We’ve tried to avoid that.

We know it’s going to tear up the roads,” Trizna said. “Even when you design roads for that, you typically never de-

sign for enough [trucks]. One truck doesn’t kill you. It’s when you have [more than that].”

A regional impact study should be completed prior to the crossing closure, Gould and Trizna said.

While staff from IDOT, Union Pacific, ICC and Elwood all agreed to the shutdown during ICC hearings, an IDOT engineer recently sent a letter to the administrative law judge overseeing the case, urging her to reconsider alternatives.

Crossing gates were broken nearly 50 times in 2013, according to village officials, who have tried to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area for some time.

Increased traffic enforcement is anticipated following the crossing shutdown next week to ensure safety, but also to stop truckers from using illegal routes, Trizna said.

Joliet considers Union Station lease with GSA

The General Services Administration would be the first new tenant for Union Station since the city started building a replacement train station.

Union Station has been target-

ed for other uses.

The Joliet City Council Land Use and Legislative Committee on Wednesday is scheduled to review a lease for GSA. Both the full City Council and federal government would have to approve the lease.

Union Station is just one option for GSA, said Kendall Jackson, Joliet planning director.

“It’s not a done deal at all,”

Jackson said Tuesday. GSA, which now has an office downtown, is shopping for new space because its lease is up, he said.

The GSA lease would cover 1,170 square feet of space last occupied by Bar Blu, a restaurant and bar, but not take the entire space, according to a city memo on the lease.

The space amounts to about a third of what was used by Bar

Blu, Jackson said. The city also needs to fill space that was used

by Amtrak and a coffee shop before construction began on a new transportation center.

GSA provides products and solicits real estate for other government agencies.

Base rent on the Joliet space is estimated at $1,365 a month, or $14 per square foot, during the first five years of the 10-

year lease, according to the city memo. GSA also would pay build-out costs in the first five years. The agency would pay base rent only in the last five years of the lease.

The city would be able to increase base rent over the 10year period.

Build-out costs are estimated at $59,670, or $51 per square foot.

Officials are conducting bacteriological tests on the water.

Koch said the boil order is expected to be lifted Wednesday afternoon, or earlier, pending city notification.

Housing numbers improving

Also at the Village Board meeting, Director of Development Mike Petrick told trustees the latest housing numbers. Many are improving, he said. The total construction value of new homes in 2014 was $2.343 million, as compared to a value in 2013 of $1.912 million.

The average home sale price in Channahon was $208,436 in 2014, compared to $197,286 the year before, and home sales last year totaled

$34.184 million, compared to $8.681 million in 2013.

Winners of the Channaholiday Contest were also announced. Vicky Hurst won first place, Christian Chudy second and Diane Cook took third. They were recognized at the meeting and received prizes including gas cards, restaurant gift certificates, gift baskets and a round of golf.

This was the first year the village instituted the contest, designed to promote local shopping. To enter the contest, residents could fill a card with stamps by visiting at least 15 of the village’s 46 participating businesses.

The businesses that gave out the most stamps were McDonald’s, Walgreens, Jimmy John’s, Casey’s General Store and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The competition began Nov. 29 and ended Jan. 2.

Twenty-eight stamp cards were turned in. Surveyed businesses indicated they liked that the event encouraged customers to shop local.

CHANNAHON – Channahon village trustees have unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement between the village and several area taxing bodies.

Through the agreement, approved Monday by trustees, the entities agree to allow the village to use portions of their property taxes for the next 15 years to cover Interstate 55-Bluff Road interchange improvements.

Improvements include expanded interstate ramps, added turn lanes to Bluff Road, new traffic signals, a water line under the interstate and other work.

The project will be done in preparation for a 118-acre logistics/industrial center planned for the northeast area of the intersection by developer Industrial Development International.

The Minooka Community High School Board approved the agreement last week, and

the Channahon School District 17 board has the item on its Jan. 26 agenda.

According to Channahon Village Administrator Tom Durkin, two additional taxing bodies also will meet Monday; he will present to the Will County Board for the second time in early February, and the Channahon Fire Protection District and the Three Rivers Library Board are expected to make their decisions in February.

Previously acquitted of attempted murder

Dominique D. Travis, 21, pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and was sentenced to five-and-a-half years behind bars. Defense attorney Elizabeth Meyer said the two-year sentence Travis received two weeks ago for striking his pregnant girlfriend earlier in 2013 will be served at the same time.

On Sept. 2, 2013, several peo-

ple were sitting on a concrete wall in the 200 block of North Broadway when Travis walked by and began arguing with Ryan Dominique K. McCorkle, D. Travis according to Assistant State’s Attorney Steven Platek.

“Travis [returned] and confronted him with a black handgun in his waistband,” Platek told Judge Edward Burmila.

Police said Travis shot at the group, striking McCorkle in the calf. In exchange for pleading guilty, charges of ag-

gravated battery, aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a gang member were dropped against Travis.

McCorkle, 22, was arrested by Joliet police Jan. 2 on charges of drug trafficking and delivery of marijuana. He is being held in the Will County jail,

where Travis also is being kept, until his transfer to the Department of Corrections.

A month after the Joliet confrontation, Travis allegedly got into a fight outside a party in the 100 block of Malibu Drive in Bolingbrook, according to police reports. Travis was accused of shooting a 20-year-old Bolingbrook man in the chest and a 21-year-old Bolingbrook man in the leg before fleeing as a passenger in

an SUV and throwing a gun from the vehicle during a police chase.

Travis was charged with attempted murder, but during his trial in August, witnesses testified they could not remember identifying him that night.

Now-retired Judge Robert Livas noted the witnesses’ “collective amnesia” while ruling prosecutors had not proven their case, finding Travis not guilty.

LOCAL BRIEFS Batinick to keep 97th District office in Plainfield

PLAINFIELD – The local office for the 97th District state representative is staying at 24047 Lockport St. in Plainfield.

Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, is taking over 1,000-square feet of space in the building used by predecessor Tom Cross for his district office in downtown Plainfield.

“I’m just taking a very small portion of it,” said Batinick, adding that the space includes three rooms. “[Cross] was the leader [of House Republicans], so he had a big office and had his political campaign office in the suite next to it.”

Batinick said he was considered leasing space in the new Plainfield Township Community Center “to keep taxpayer money with taxpayers,” but there wasn’t enough space.

Batinick said one of his goals as he starts his first term in the state Legislature was to return 11 percent of his representative’s stipend back to the state.

Born December 16, 1935, to Stanley L and Edith P (Malenke) Williamson.

Preceded in death by her loving husband, Ronald J. Branchaw; her parents; grandparents, Paulina and Reinold Malenke; and one brother, Robert Williamson.

Survived by her devoted daughter, Beth Branchaw (David W. Higgins); niece, Ruth (Williamson) Bannister; nephew, Robert Williamson; cousin, Beverly (Borio) Ramuta; a grandniece, grandnephews, and cousins.

Carol was a lifelong resident of Joliet. She was a devoted wife and mother who took great pride in caring for her home. She had an infectious laugh and was beloved by her many friends. In her 20’s through early 30’s, she worked at Illinois Bell Telephone, where she met a group of wonderful, lifelong friends, who call themselves the “Club Girls”. She enjoyed classic Hollywood movies,

pinochle, and See’s candy.

Graduated 1954 JTHS, Member, JTHS Choir, Joliet Women’s Club.

Member, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid Society and Choir.

A funeral service will be on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, at 10:30 a.m.

Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home.

Elsie Mae Hanna “Toots” (nee Baltz), age 88, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Born October 23, 1926, in Troy Township, she was a lifetime Joliet area resident.

Preceded in death by her husband, Mark (1990); her parents, John L. and Irene (nee Garlic) Baltz; her stepmother, Elsie Page Baltz; and two brothers, Harlow and Donald Baltz.

Beloved mother of Marlene (William) Greiner; loving grandmother of Stacy Connelly and Lisa (Dr. Brian) Winkleman; proud great-grandmother of Quinn and Campbell Connelly; Hanna and A.J. Winkleman; dear sister of Lt. Col. Katherine Hayes; aunt to several nieces and nephews.

ANN I. HONIOTES Ann I. Honiotes (nee Kochalka) Anna “Ann” I. Honiotes, age 92, died peacefully at Our Lady of Angels in Joliet under the watchful eye of their caring staff, especially her special caregiver Ashley, and Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Born in Joliet on May 15, 1922, in the home of her parents, Joseph and Mary Kochalka above their neighborhood grocery store on Garnsey Avenue. She met the love of her life, Andrew J. Honiotes at the St. Thaddeus Church bazaar when she was 16 years old. Four years later in July 1942 they eloped and were married by an army chaplain at Chanute Field in Rantoul, IL. Although her parents were immigrants from Slovakia and his from Greece, they proved that true love would overcome any cultural bound-

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Reies Lopez Tijerina, a Pentecostal preacher turned activist who led a violent raid of a northern New Mexico courthouse nearly 50 years ago, died Monday. He was 88.

Family representative Estela Reyes-Lopez said Tijerina, who helped spark the radical Chicano movement, died at an El Paso, Texas, hospital, of natural causes.

Tijerina, who had been battling a number of illnesses, including a heart condition, had to use a wheelchair in recent years but still occasionally gave speeches.

She shared stories of playing barefoot in the snow as a child, learning to drive in her father’s grocery delivery truck at age 14, and riding her bicycle to the far west side of Joliet to see Andy when they were dating because “he and his brothers worked 16 hours a day” on the Honiotes family truck farm at Troy Rd and Midland Avenue. Weeks after they were married Andy went overseas with the U.S. Army Air Corps.

She attended dressmaking school by train in Chicago until Andy returned from Europe nearly 3 years later at the end of the war in 1945.

Those skills she learned would be perfected during her lifetime making many of her own clothes, all the draperies in their home, Halloween costumes and countless alterations for family and friends. Her greatest joy was cooking and baking for her family and friends. Her signature treat was the traditional Slovak “Rozki” cookies she learned to make from her mother. We estimate she may have made nearly a million of them in her lifetime.

She was a lifetime member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church Altar and Rosary Society, Homemakers, and a lifetime member of the PTA. She was an active member of the “Lady Lions” and later in life she became a full member of the Joliet Noon Lions Club and was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones award for her service following in the footsteps of her late

EMMA JEAN MIKUSKA Emma Jean Mikuska “Toddy”, (nee Residori), age 79, entered eternal life on Sunday, January 18, 2015, with her loving family by her side.

Toddy is survived by her loving son, Richard B. (Tommi) Mikuska Jr. of Garfiled, AR; loving sister, Jeanie (Vince) Gelsomino of Princeton, IL; as well as numerous dear in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard B. Mikuska Sr.; parents, Arthur and Mary (nee Legan) Residori; sister, MaryAnn Stasko.

Toddy was employed at Tri-County Periodicals where she worked as a secretary after graduating from Providence High School. She belonged to the Hobbits Club in Arkansas where she previously lived. She was a lifetime VFW Ladies Auxiliary member. Toddy married her husband and love of her life, Richard Sr., on May 12, 1956. Toddy had a passion for cooking and loved being a homemaker. She was a very thoughtful and generous person and she will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

Lillie M. Minarich (nee Salato), age 100 years, passed away Sunday January 18, 2015, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County. Born in Hiteman, Iowa on September 20, 1914, and living in Joliet most of her life.

As a young lady, she was a member of the West Park Ladies Baseball Team. Years ago, she worked at the Navy Yards in Rockdale. Member of the Paulites of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Lillie enjoyed crocheting, baking and working in her rose garden at home. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Peter A. Minarich (1997); her parents, Peter and Antonia (nee Marca) Salato; two brothers, Felix and Elmer Salato; and four sisters, Margaret Campagna, Helen Bajt, Louise Menegan and Mary Jane Berg.

Survived by her daughter, Anna Mae (Wayne) Gustafson; and her son, Robert (Marlene) Minarich; seven grandchildren, Victoria (Greg) Menozzi, Mark (Donna) Gustafson, Scott (Amy) Gustafson, Kevin (Diana) Gustafson, Duane (MaryJo) Minarich, Debbie (Rich) King and Diane (Randy) Christenson; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Celia Kren (nee Starcevich), 89, most recently of Lisle, passed away January 18, 2015, at Central DuPage Hospital.

Survived by her son, Barry (Diane); daughter and best friend, Sue (Kelley Neal); in-laws, Lillian Starcevich, JoAnne Starcevich, Rome Kren, Marge Kren and Sally Kren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded by her parents, John and Anne (nee Putrich); brothers, Tony and George; sister, Catherine Senffner; son, Bruce; as well as former husband, Bernard and various other relatives.

Special to Celia were her three grandchildren, Tracey (Matthew) Kelly, Amy (Trevor) Sula, and Nate (Jillian) Kren; and great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Tanner, Jonah, McKinley and Brady.

Celia served in U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII and was employed by Marshall Field’s in Joliet for 22 years.

She was a die-hard Cubs fan and treasured her books, flowers and loved old movies. The family would like to thank home health nurse, Laurie, for her care, compassion and dedication. “Her” feline companion, Jordan, will miss her greatly.

Dan graduated from Lockport Township High School in 1945, where he played baseball, basketball and football and served as senior class president. Dan immediately joined the United States Marine Corps and became a proud Marine, serving four years active duty and four years in the USMC Reserve at the rank of Corporal.

Dan was a 1951 graduate of Freight Traffic Institute of Chicago. He was employed at Blockson Chemical and at Mechling Barge Line as a traffic manager. He owned and operated Dan Lambert Amoco from 1957 until his retirement in 1999. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Lewis University in 1970.

Dan loved baseball and coached young players for over 30 years at Marycrest, St. Joe’s Park, St. Paul the Apostle School, Goltz Park, Joliet Collegiate team and the University of St. Francis.

A: Many clients inform me that avoiding probate is a primary concern or goal in their overall estate plan. Putting aside the question of whether probate truly is the “absolute evil”it is perceived to be (believe it or not, there are certain advantages to probate), for various reasons I always discourage adding children or other non-spouse relatives as joint tenants on bank accounts, investment accounts and real estate. Adding a non-spouse as a joint tenant on property is the equivalent of making a cash gift to the individual, which may require the filing of a federal gift tax return. Depending on the value of the property and the overall size of your estate, adding a non-spouse on title may reduce the amount of property you can pass to your heirs free of the

federal estate tax. In addition, if your new joint tenant becomes disabled, it may be necessary to institute guardianship proceedings in order to manage or dispose of the asset. Finally, if your new joint tenant encounters problems with creditors, is an unsuccessful party to a lawsuit, voluntarily/involuntarily files for bankruptcy, or faces divorce proceedings, then your asset could become subject to the claims of those creditors.

For these reasons, if avoiding probate is a crucial goal in your overall estate plan, you should consider the alternatives to joint tenancy, which include utilizing a funded estate plan trust, a land trust at your local bank or trust company, establishing“payable on death” or“transfer on death”accounts naming your intended recipient(s) as beneficiary.

In addition, the recent Transfer on Death Instrument Act may be appropriate for your particular situation.

First of all, you should set up an appointment with your attorney. Second, there are some general things you should know: Contrary to what you may have heard on late-night-t.v.-avoid-probate ads, “the State” does not take everything if your husband died without a Will.

Most probably your home is held in “joint-tenancy” or “tenancy by the entirety”. “Joint-tenancy” means you both own 100% of your real estate and upon your husband’s death the whole 100% becomes yours. “Tenancy-by-the-entirety” is used to protect your homestead from creditors. You both own 100% of your home and certain creditors (not including the company holding the mortgage on your home) are barred from foreclosing on your home as long as you continue to reside in the home. In either case, there is nothing you need to do with the title of your home right now.

If sometime in the future you decide to sell your home, you will need to complete an affidavit of deceased joint tenant. This affidavit will be prepared as part of the closing documents.

Since you have been married for forty years, I presume that most all your assets such as bank accounts, investments, the car and any other real estate was owned by you and your husband as joint tenants. If that is true all this property becomes yours at your husband’s death. You may wish to inform your bank of his death. If you sell the car, the Secretary of State’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles will require a certified copy of your husband’s death certificate and will also ask you to complete some of their forms to transfer title.

If your late husband had life insurance, call the insurance company and ask them to send you the forms necessary to cash in or reinvest the proceeds of his life insurance.

HOWEVER, if your husband died with real estate or the car or other assets such as bank accounts, investments, stocks, bonds in his name only, then be aware that under Section 2-1(a) of the Illinois Probate Act of 1975, ½ of this property goes to you and ½ is to be divided equally among your children. It is at this point that you definitely need to see your attorney. He or she will advise you about the documents you need to prepare to divide these assets.

If the assets in your late husband’s name only are under $100,000.00 in value, then a Small Estate Affidavit may be prepared to properly divide these assets. If these assets (in your late husband’s name only) are over $100,000.00 you may need to probate your late husband’s estate. If you own real estate outside the State of Illinois, such as a condo in Florida or a cabin in Wisconsin, then you will need to talk with a lawyer in that state.

I’m sure you are not in an emotional condition to deal with all this right now.

So do the following: 1. Take one day at a time. 2. Hire an experienced probate, estate-planning or elder law attorney to handle all these problems. 3. A: As you know, a common theme among big business is that the Illinois Workers’ Compensation system is bad. Having practiced in this State for over 40 years, I can attest that it is not, when looked at from a straight forward objective view. However, the view of business is a very simple one: bottom-line. If another State is cheaper, than the State that is pricier is “bad.” Frequently they compare Illinois to Indiana.

Indiana’s workers’ compensation rates are cheaper for employers. The reason is very simple: when a worker is injured and suffers a disability, he or she is kicked to the curb, given a very small amount of money, and left to fend for themselves. Illinois has always taken a more humanitarian approach, one that reflects individual human dignity, since work frequently defines who we are.

An example is a case I had several years ago where a person was hired in Illinois but injured in Indiana. Of course the insurance company paid Indiana benefits, and even though the person had multiple surgeries and could no longer return to his job as a supervisor in the construction trades, he would only get a $24,000.00 settlement under Indiana law. His future work life was about 20 years and that sum was about 4 months worth of wages. The sum was well below unfair. Because we were able to bring the case under Illinois jurisdiction, he was able to get 2 things he could not get in Indiana. The first is vocational rehabilitation.

What this is is that when a person is no longer able to do their old job because of an injury, they are entitled to retraining, or at least placement in a new position, so they can remain a productive part of the work force.

As I stated earlier, Indiana simply kicks them to the curb and could care less what happens to them. During this period of vocational rehabilitation, in Illinois, the employee receives maintenance, which is 2/3rds of the average weekly wage for the year before the accident. Thus the employee’s income is cut by 1/3rd, so it is hardly the gravy train many wish to claim, especially since most people have their standard of living at the level of their full wages these days.

If the wage earner’s new job is significantly less wages than the previous job, in Indiana the worker will get a small settlement, like the $24,000.00 I earlier described, based on an artificially low scheme known as AMA Impairment Ratings. These are ratings of per-centages of impairment (not disability) the creation of a which is funded by big business and insurance companies. In Illinois, he will get 2/3rds of the difference between the old wages and the new wages, again representing a loss of income, until age 67, but at least the employee will have the income for a lower standard of living but approaching as before. Interestingly, when the economy was way low several years ago, all the construction projects in Indiana were seeking Illinois workers, because, in my opinion, our workers do a better job. So the truth of the matter is that business can make out better with a bad workers’ compensation system, but if you happen to be the employee who was kicked to the curb, the rest of your life will be one of poverty. If you are an Illinois worker who takes a job in Indiana, you need to buy lots of disability insurance and get a policy which does not exclude workers’ compensation (most do). Unfortunately, in today’s climate few can afford this kind of insurance. adno=0300590

Q. What is the difference between a negligence claim and a product liability claim?

A. A negligence claim is based on a duty and a breach of that duty. Would a ‘reasonable person’ have done the same thing as the defendant? A product liability claim arises when there is some type of defect in the product design or a failure to warn of some danger related to the product.

The easiest way to explain is by example. If you are in an automobile accident and the person who hit you was driving too fast, but is blaming the accident on brake failure, it is potentially both a negligence claim and a product claim.

The defendant who was driving too fast for conditions is a negligence issue. Was he driving in excess of the posted speed limit? Was he driving too fast for conditions such as weather or traffic? If so, there is a potential negligence claim.

As to his claim of brake failure: Did he know his brakes were worn out or “bad” before driving it that day? If so, he did not act as a ‘reasonable person’ and there may also be a negligence action for this. On the other hand, if he just had

his brakes worked on and they were improperly installed, then the company that did this work may be responsible for negligently repairing or replacing the brakes. If the brake pads that were replaced, however, turned out to be properly installed, but were defective in some way, then a claim against the manufacturer of those pads may exist based on a defective product (i.e. product liability).

Another example of a product claim is when a drug is released into the stream of commerce knowing of a potentially serious side effect, yet no warning is listed to advise users of the risk. In essence, a product claim is designed to help protect the end user or consumer from a dangerous situation that may not be recognizable to the normal person just by looking at the product.

Whether you are injured due to the negligent acts of another, a defective product, or using a product with a hidden hazard and inadequate or no warning, you should always consult lawyers well versed in injury law who will help you recover from the responsible parties to the full extent of the law. adno=0300589

WALTER PLUME

Born: May 13, 1930; in Amboy, IL Died: Jan. 16, 2015; in Kankakee, IL Walter Plume, age 84, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

Born May 13, 1930 in Amboy, Illinois, Walter John was a son of the late Lloyd E. and Flossie (Ford) Plume.

He was a graduate of Amboy High School with the Class of 1948, and went on to honorably serve in the United States Marine Corp from 1951 to 1961, as a commissioned officer.

Walter continued his education at Northern Illinois Teacher’s College, and taught at Wilmington High School, prior to joining the faculty at Joliet West High School, from where he retired in 1985. Throughout his career, Mr. Plume taught chemistry, physics and earth sciences.

On June 28, 1958, Walter married M. Joyce Wade in the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington, and she preceded him on January 19, 2010.

Walter was active with Boy Scouts of American since the age of 13. Over the years, he belonged to Rainbow Council; was a Webelos Leader and Treasurer for Pack #455; served as Assistant Scout Master and Committee Leader at large for Troop #458 in Wilmington, and was most recently influential in reactivating BSA Troop 2 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Today, Troop 2 provides an opportunity for every boy with special needs to experience the adventures and opportunities of Scouting. Walter’s other memberships included Wilmington Lodge #208 A.F. & A.M., the Wilmington Lions Club and Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA). Walter served on the Wilmington School Board for numerous years, with his personal mission of providing the best education to the students of District 209-U, all while being fiscally responsible.

His hobbies included stamp collecting, woodworking and traveling. Walter especially enjoyed being overseas, vacationing to the National Parks and visiting natural formations. His passions were small bore shooting, restoring old cars, particularly 1953 and 1968 Chevys; and genealogy. Walter was proud to have traced his family heritage back to the Puritans and the Mayflower.

He will be remembered as a true frugal individual, who was a “Jack of

all trades”.

Survivors include his two sons, Lloyd (Kwi Suk) Plume of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Leslie (Laura) Plume of Madison, Alabama; six grandchildren, Kenneth, Ryan, Leah and Savannah Plume, and Young Kim-Plume and Hannah Shin; and one great grandchild, Sun Bin Shin.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce; and two brothers, Kenneth Lyle Plume and Frank Elias Plume.

Visitation and video tribute will be held at The First United Methodist Church, 401 East Kahler Road in Wilmington, on Friday January 23, 2015, between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow Saturday morning January 24th, in the church at 11:00 a.m.

Reverend Thomas Kingery will officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Oakwood Cemetery Sunset Addition, where Walter will be laid to rest with his late wife Joyce.

Lucille H. Smith, 96, entered eternal life on January 20, 2015.

Born on July 31, 1918, she was the daughter of Anton and Sophie Jasinski. A lifelong Joliet resident, she graduated from Holy Cross Grade School (1932) and Joliet Township High School (1936).

In 1943, she married Thomas E. Smith in Virginia Beach, VA, and began her life as devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, and gardener.

She was a founding member of St. Mary Magdalene Parish and she and her husband were named to the parish Wall of Honor in 1999. She served

He worked for a time at the Arsenal, A & P Grocery Stores and Caterpillar, before working and retiring from Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where he liked everyone and everyone liked him. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. He taught his children good work ethics and caring for people by example. John received 90 birthday cards for his 90th birthday from old friends and relatives.

He leaves us with good memories of many fun times we shared. We celebrate his life. He truly was a fine dad, grandpa and great grandpa, and will be missed.

Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd, Friday, January 23rd at 11 :00 a.m.

Study finds no easy way to reduce Illinois’ debt

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said President Barack Obama’s decision to restore U.S. diplomatic ties with Cuba will have real benefits for Illinois.

Durbin issued a statement Tuesday after he and other members of Congress returned from Cuba. It was the first congressional delegation visit since Obama’s announcement last month. The Illinois Democrat said restoring ties will help farmers, small businesses and working families in Illinois and around the United States.

Durbin also said it can help open Cuba to new ideas and improved human rights the 50-year policy of exclusion could not.

Republicans control the Senate and the House. Durbin said he is worried lawmakers may “scuttle” the effort to fully lift the decades-old embargo on Cuba. But, he said, the American people are ready for it to end.

CHICAGO – The University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs said there is no easy to repair Illinois’ chronic annual deficit.

An analysis released by the university’s Fiscal Futures Project indicates Illinois currently faces a $9 billion annual deficit that will grow to $14 billion by 2026.

Co-Director Richard Dye compared the state’s fiscal status to that of a person in deep credit card debt. He said the state hasn’t paid debt totaling $159 billion – which he said is more than twice the inflow of revenue in a single year.

Dye said solving the debt problem will require a long-term fiscal plan that includes tax increases, spending cuts and economic growth. But changes in expectations and policy also are needed to restore fiscal balance, the study said.

Munger: Comptroller position a good place to help Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – New Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger sees her new job as a chance to help the state get its budget problems in order.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed Munger to replace Judy Baar Topinka, who died in December after winning another term as comptroller.

Munger told The State Journal-Register she brings valuable experience to the role of overseeing the state’s checkbook.

Munger managed multibillion-dollar budgets as a business executive. The Lincolnshire Republican also served on the board of a social service agency, where she saw how Topinka’s policy of prioritizing

Kilgore decision at U of I draws heavy public comment

URBANA – More than 500 people sent emails to the University of Illinois after it decided not

to keep James Kilgore as an instructor and before it went back on that decision and decided to rehire the former Symbionese Liberation Army member.

Some of the writers excused Kilgore’s crimes as youthful indiscretions. Those who wrote hoping he never would be rehired noted his felony conviction for his role in a 1975 bank robbery by the radical group that left a woman dead.

Eight charged in South Side Chicago dog-fighting ring

CHICAGO – Eight people are facing criminal charges after police said they discovered a dog-fighting ring on the South Side of Chicago.

Officers responded to a report of dog fighting at a West Englewood home Sunday night.

Police said the officers found four wounded pit bulls, including one in severe distress, fresh blood and a dog-fighting ring inside of the home.

According to a press release, 22-year-old Jawaan Chick of Matteson has been charged with felony dog fighting by someone who owns or breeds fighting animals. Seven others are facing felony charges related to attending a dog fight.

WASHINGTON – The government’s health insurance website is quietly sending consumers’ personal data to private companies that specialize in advertising and analyzing Internet data for performance and marketing, The Associated Press has learned.

The scope of what is disclosed or how it might be used was not immediately clear; but it can include age, income, ZIP code, whether a person smokes, and if a person is pregnant. It can include a computer’s Internet address, which can identify a person’s name or address when combined with other information collected by sophisticated online marketing or advertising firms.

There is no evidence personal information has been misused.

But connections to dozens of third-party tech firms were documented by technology experts who analyzed HealthCare.gov and then confirmed by AP.

Obama’s address marked the first time in his presidency that he stood before a Republican-controlled Congress.

Yet the shift in the political landscape also has been accompanied by a burst of economic growth and hiring, as well as a slight increase in Obama’s once sagging approval ratings – leaving the White House to see little incentive in curtailing or even tweaking its agenda in response to the Republicans’ midterm election victories.

After ticking through signs of the rising economy, the president turned toward Republicans sitting in the chamber and said with a wink, “This is good news, people.”

The centerpiece of Obama’s economic proposals marked a shift away from the focus on austerity and deficit reduction that has dominated his fiscal fights with Republicans.

In a direct challenge to GOP economic ideology, Obama

called for increasing the capital gains rate on couples making more than $500,000 annually, to 28 percent.

The president’s tax plan would also require estates to pay capital gains taxes on securities at the time they’re inherited and slap a fee on the roughly 100 U.S. financial firms with assets of more than $50 billion.

Much of the $320 billion in new taxes and fees would be used for measures aimed at helping the middle class, including a $500 tax credit for some families with two spouses working, expansion of the child care tax credit and a $60 billion program to make community college free.

“Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well?” Obama asked. “Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?”

Even before the president’s address, Republicans were balking at his proposals and painting a far less rosy picture of the economy.

“We see our neighbors agonize over stagnant wages and lost jobs. We see the hurt caused by canceled health care plans and higher monthly insurance bills,” said Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, who delivered the Republican response.

“But when we demanded solutions, too often Washing-

ton responded with the same stale mindset that led to failed policies like Obamacare. It’s a mindset that gave us political talking points, not serious solutions.”

With an eye on a swirl of foreign policy challenges, Obama defended his decision to return to military action in Iraq and also authorize airstrikes in Syria. He said Congress could “show the world that we are united in this mission” by passing a new resolution formally authorizing the use of force against the Islamic State group.

As the U.S. eyes a March deadline for a framework agreement with Iran on its disputed nuclear program, the president vowed to veto any effort by Congress to pass new sanctions legislation.

Such a step, he said, “will all but guarantee that diplomacy fails – alienating America from its allies and ensuring that Iran starts up its nuclear program again.”

The president also heralded his unilateral move last month to normalize diplomatic relations with Cuba after a half-century of animosity, and he urged lawmakers to follow his lead by lifting the economic embargo on the communist island. CENTENNIAL, Colo. – The first time James Holmes appeared in court, his hair was dyed a comic-book shade of orange.

As the first day of jury selection ended Tuesday in the Colorado theater shooting case, Holmes’ hair was dark brown and neatly trimmed. His orange jail uniform was replaced by khaki slacks, a dress shirt and a blue blazer.

Holmes’ more-conventional appearance was an indication that the case was nearing when a jury would see the defendant accused of killing 12 people and wounding 70 others at a suburban Denver theater in 2012. But attorneys first must sort through thousands of potential jurors.

Court officials initially summoned a jury pool of 9,000, the largest in U.S. history. But that figure later fell to about 7,000. It could take until June to seat the jurors and alternates for a trial that might last until October.

Monday night with what a resident described as an earth-shaking thud. The Ohio Department of Transportation said it’s difficult to predict how long pavement repairs might take without seeing the damage.

Quinn’s last days in office show he is not a class act REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – A familiar voice came booming across my phone line the other day.

“Scott, it’s George Ryan.”

I hadn’t talked to the former governor since he was released from prison.

Now that he has paid his debt to society, he wanted to weigh in on a matter of political protocol: whether Pat Quinn should have shown up for Bruce Rauner’s inauguration.

With the exception of the day Rod Blagojevich was impeached, the outgoing governor – for at least the last 50 years – always has been there to hand over the reins to his successor.

It’s a gracious thing to do.

In a democracy, power is handed over peacefully.

In Washington, on inauguration day, the outgoing and incoming presidents and their spouses have tea together before the swearing-in.

It brings a certain civility to the process.

Ryan said that when his successor, Blagojevich, was sworn in, he sat through it.

“It was hard. He took hits at me. But I sat there and took it,” he said.

Good for George Ryan.

Former Gov. Dan Walker beat former Gov. Richard Ogilvie. But Ogilvie sat through the inauguration and listened to Walker say, “The free ride is over.”

Ogilvie, a tough former World War II tank commander, sat there and took it.

But on Jan. 12, Pat Quinn was nowhere to be seen.

He stayed home in Chicago and pouted.

OK, maybe he didn’t pout.

But his conduct since Election Day has been pretty bad.

First, he refused to concede the night of the election when it was readily apparent he had lost.

Then he declined to make the traditional congratulatory call to the winner.

And, finally, he blew off the inauguration.

That’s not being a class act – at all.

And, yes, I’m aware we had a brutal gubernatorial race.

All elections for governor are brutal. Mud is slung. Egos are bruised.

Candidates cry foul.

“Elections kind of bring out the worst of us, and afterward we get back together,” former Gov. Jim Edgar told Illinois News Network.

“Inaugurations have a tendency to bring people together.”

Edgar is right.

Unless one of those people doesn’t bother to show up.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Coming off one tough conference game while preparing for another, Joliet Catholic boys basketball coach Joe Gura was understandably concerned about how his team would perform in Tuesday’s nonconference contest at Lincoln-Way Central.

But after the Hilltoppers jumped out to a quick 15-2 advantage and extended their lead to 16 points early in the second quarter, most of their coach’s fears were eased.

JCA grabbed a 34-14 halftime lead and never let the Knights get any closer than 18 points during the second half as it went on to capture a 57-36 victory.

“We were on the road on a Tuesday night sandwiched between two unbelievably tough games,” Gura said. “You worry about are we going to have energy and what are the guys thinking? Is there any hangover from Friday and any looking forward to this Friday? We talked about execution and energy – and we had energy, and we also executed real well.

“We know what we have ahead of us, so we have to get better in each game. The big-

gest thing for us is that we’re young, and I like that. What we’re doing better is understanding how to play like a team. We play pretty good basketball and run decent stuff; but it’s the nuances of the game, and we’re starting to get that – and to me, that’s everything.”

The Hilltoppers (11-9) received baskets from four play-

ers to grab the early, 13-point advantage. Jalen Jackson, who scored a game-high 25 points, got scoring started with a 3-pointer and ended the run with a layup.

After Central (3-11) closed to within 16-5 at the first break, Jackson scored four of team’s next five buckets, including three 3-pointers. He finished the opening half with 17 points,

which was three more than the hosts had scored by halftime.

“We had some great looks in the first half, and we knocked them down,” Jackson said.

“These last two years have helped us to become the team that we are, and our chemistry is at another level from where it was last year. We’re showing progress, and you never want to take a step back. The thing

that I like is when we play unselfishly. When we do that, we’re a hard team to stop since it puts a lot of pressure on the other teams’ defense.”

JCA also received 12 points from Harold Davis, while Drake Fellows added eight points and 10 rebounds and Pete Ragen had six points and eight rebounds. The Knights got 10 points apiece from Chris Robinson and Mike Koszela, while Mitch Kwasigroch added six points.

While JCA’s fast start was just what Gura was hoping to see from his team, it also pretty much guaranteed another frustrating evening for Central coach Bob Curran.

The early deficit was too much to overcome for the youthful Knights; but to their credit, they continued to battle throughout the remainder of the game.

“Our youth has really shown by our inconsistency,” Curran said. “In the first quarter, we had nine turnovers, and we didn’t play very good defense. To their credit, Jackson made shots, but we have to know who the best player on the court is and stop him a little bit better. But our kids did a good job of playing with pride in the second half.”

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – The Providence boys basketball team ran into a buzz saw Tuesday night.

It was the state-ranked St. Rita Mustangs who beat the Celtics, 63-43, in a Chicago Catholic League matchup between Augustinian rivals.

“That (St Rita) is a team that can win the state championship, and that is what they are talking about in their locker room,” Celtics coach Tim Trendel said.

Providence (8-8, 2-5) held its own in the first quarter, only down three with 2:25 remaining. After a quick four-point

run by St Rita (14-2, 6-0), the quarter ended with the Mustangs up, 13-7.

The Celtics cut it to four on a basket by Miles Boykin to start the second quarter. That was the closest the Celtics would get for the remainder of the game.

The athletic and long Mustangs outscored the Celtics, 194, the rest of the quarter to take a 32-15 halftime lead. During that surge, St. Rita scored 13 unanswered points and held the Celtics scoreless for about four minutes.

“A game like this helps us in the long run,” Trendel said.

“Our kids are disappointed, but I told them we are really getting ready for March.

In that third quarter, Celtic senior Jack Brody scored eight of his game-high 20 points to keep Providence in the game.

“Jack played well in the game,” Trendel said. “With Jack, it’s a lot about how he

starts; and with Miles back, he is also learning how to play with him.”

In the fourth quarter, Brody hit for eight more points; but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs outscored Providence, 17-14, and claimed the victory.

“We are a work in progress,” Trendel said. “We have to learn how to trust each other. Once we get everyone back, we will be just fine.”

Charles Matthews, the 6-foot-6 Kentucky-bound point guard, led the Mustangs with 22 points. Kain Harris added 17.

The Mustangs have won seven in a row.

Matt Koran always had confidence in his ability in the classroom and the athletic arena.

Still, the Joliet West graduate admits he had doubts in the back of his mind. Going to Harvard to study and play football, who wouldn’t have doubts?

Well, look at him now.

Koran, a junior, was a starting inside linebacker for the Crimson in their 10-0 season last fall when they beat rival Yale, 31-24, in “The Game,” a thrilling season finale, and won the Ivy League championship. At the postseason team banquet, coach Tim Murphy announced that, by a vote of his teammates, Koran will be the 142nd captain in Harvard’s storied football history.

“It is a big honor,” Koran said while home in Joliet for semester break. “No, I’m beyond honored. It has been a whirlwind semester. You can’t do any better than 10-0.

I’m proud of the team and how it came together this year.

“To go 10-0 is incredible.

I’m looking forward to next season. We have a lot of guys returning. But we won’t be exactly the same team, and we know we will have a huge target on our chests. We’ve got work to do.”

Spoken like a true captain, Harvard’s one and only. Unlike most schools, the Crimson designates one captain per season. At the awards banquet, Murphy described Koran as having “enormous character, and he’s a tough guy.”

Koran was a standout linebacker, wrestler and catcher/ slugger at Joliet West. He not only was among the most accomplished athletes on each of those teams, but he was a leader in every sport.

Jones’ ‘ugly’ bucket lifts Central over Lockport in thriller

By TIM O’BRIEN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Joliet Central’s Morgan Jones didn’t shy away from the truth. That was one ugly jump shot.

It didn’t matter, of course. It went in with a bounce and a friendly roll.

Jones’ mid-range jumper in the lane proved to be the difference for host Joliet Central on Tuesday night as the Steelmen girls basketball team came back from a 12-point, third-quarter deficit to win a 4543 thriller over Lockport in a SouthWest Suburban Blue contest.

“I was off-balance, and it happened to go in,” Jones said with a smile. “I wasn’t sure how open I was. Sometimes it’s going to fall in. Sometimes it doesn’t, so keep shooting.”

Monica Barefield’s 16 points paced Central (7-11, 3-3), with Gerhyrah Grant (10 points), Jones (eight points, nine rebounds) and Chantell Mack (eight points, nine rebounds) contributing.

Laurel Kucharski finished with 11 points for Lockport (10-8, 3-4), with Kianna Campbell (nine points) and Jamari McAfee (eight points, four assists) chipping in.

Central coach Brian Reed will take the victory. He just would like to see some more consistency out of his Steelmen, who trailed, 36-24, with 3:17 left in the third quarter. Central closed the game on a 21-7 spurt.

“We’re playing better now, and we’re playing with more energy,” Reed said.

“We’re learning how to play together, and it’s a work in progress.”

Barefield delivered a pass over the defense to Mack underneath, Mack going up and drawing the foul to cut the deficit to 42-41.

Mack missed the free throw, but Central rebounded to set up Jones’ off-balance but effective go-ahead bucket. Receiving the ball at the 3-point line, Jones dribbled in and rose up just inside the free throw line in traffic for the go-ahead score.

“We had to hustle more and get after everything,” Jones said.

“We had to pick up the intensity,” Barefield said. “Coach kept calling timeouts and telling us to pick it up on defense and make some shots. We’ve got to have heart to win. When things are down, you have to go all out.”

Reed hopes that the mindset and momentum rolls over in just that fashion – all out over the last month-plus of the season.

“It was a nice win over Lockport,” Reed said. “Hopefully, we’ll peak at the right time, because we’re starting to see the potential of this team.”

“We’re playing better now, and we’re playing with more energy. We’re learning how to play together, and it’s a work in progress.”

By JANIE McCAULEY The Associated Press The Bears hired Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator Tuesday, hoping the veteran coach who spent the last four seasons with San Francisco can breathe some life into the once-storied unit.

The Bears said they have reached an agreement with the 56-year-old Fangio to take over the Bears’ struggling defense under new coach John Fox. Terms were not disclosed.

Fangio had been a candidate for the defensive coordinator job with the Washington Redskins, who instead hired Joe Barry. Fangio also was bypassed for the 49ers’ coaching job, given to defensive line coach Jim Tomsula last week.

Fangio just finished his fourth season as 49ers defensive coordinator after coming from Stanford with Vic Fangio former coach Jim Harbaugh before the 2011 season. San Francisco had one of the NFL’s top defenses during his tenure but missed the playoffs at 8-8 last season following three straight NFC championship game appearances.

The 49ers’ defense struggled to find any consistency last season after the injuries of a number of star players.

“It usually happens in droves that way sometimes,” Fangio said about the series of injuries. “Like I said, I’ve been in the NFL a long time.

There’s been other years like this. You can’t let it get your dauber down. You just have to keep your focus, keep the blinders on and do the best you can do.”

Fangio has 28 years of NFL coaching experience, with 15 seasons as a defensive coordinator – Carolina (1995-98), Indianapolis (1999-2001), Houston (2002-05) and San Francisco. He also worked for the Saints and Ravens.

During his time in San Francisco, the 49ers were second in the NFL in scoring defense (17.4 points per game), third in total defense (310.2 yards per game) and fourth in takeaways (122). The 49ers also had the top run defense (92.0 ypg) and allowed the second-lowest yards per carry (3.78).

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Marc Trestman will be coaching in the NFL again next season, as he was hired to be the Ravens’ offensive coordinator, the team announced Tuesday.

Trestman was fired on Dec. 29 following a 5-11 season with the Bears. He reportedly had interviewed with the Raiders, Browns and Jaguars for their vacant offensive coordinator spots. The Ravens’ post became available when Gary Kubiak left to coach the Broncos. Former Broncos offensive

coordinator Adam Gase also interviewed in Baltimore.

After a 2013 season in which the Bears’ offense was second in the league in scoring, it fell to 23rd in 2014, a big reason for the poor season and Trestman’s firing. The Bears were 21st in total offense, and Jay Cutler turned the ball over a league-high 24 times.

This is the eighth NFL team that Trestman has coached for and his fifth as an offensive coordinator. He has been the coordinator for the Browns (1988-89), 49ers (1995-96), Cardinals (1998-2000) and Raiders (2001-03), while also making

stops in Minnesota (1985-1986), Tampa Bay (1987), Detroit (1997) and Miami (2004). Trestman coached the Montreal Alouettes from 2008-12.

Trestman will work with Joe Flacco and a Ravens offense that was 12th in the NFL in yards and eighth in scoring last season.

The hiring, as well as heavy interest in Trestman, likely conveys that the league put more of the Bears’ struggles on Cutler as opposed to Trestman, the play-caller. The Ravens certainly trust what Trestman did in 2013 more so than last season.

Hawks hand Coyotes 6th straight loss

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Andrew Shaw broke out of a scoring slump with two goals, and the Blackhawks beat the struggling Arizona Coyotes, 6-1, on Tuesday night.

Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists, and rookie Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and an assist as the Hawks got back on track after dropping two in a row and three of four. Kane’s goal in the second was No. 200 for his career, and Teravainen had his first multipoint game in the NHL. Hawks goalie Antti Raanta made 35 saves while improving to 7-0 at home this season.

Raanta started in place of Corey Crawford, who likely will get the nod in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Arizona lost its sixth consecutive game, extending its season-worst streak. Lucas Lessio scored his first career goal in the second, and Mike Smith finished with 45 stops.

The Coyotes played without left wing Mikkel Boedker, who had appeared in 257 consecutive games for the fourth-longest streak in team history.

The 25-year-old Boedker, who leads Arizona with 14 goals, had his spleen removed after he was injured in Sunday’s 4-3 shootout loss at Winnipeg.

Shaw had only one goal in his previous 22 games coming into the night. He played sparingly in the third period of Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Dallas, but he was much better right from the start against Arizona.

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small yellow onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound ground beef 1 teaspoon chili powder Salt and ground black pepper Eight 8-inch flour tortillas, room temperature 15-ounce can refried beans 1 cup grated cheddar cheese Salsa, to serve Guacamole, to serve Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 9-by13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.

In a large skillet over medium-high, heat the oil. Add the onion and garlic and saute for 4 minutes. Add the ground beef and saute, breaking it up, until browned, about 6 minutes.

Sprinkle in the chili powder, then stir well.

Season with salt and pepper, then set aside off the heat.

One at a time, lay a tortilla flat on the counter. Spread about 2 tablespoons of the

refried beans evenly over the entire surface of the tortilla. Spoon about ¼ cup of the ground beef mixture in a line near the edge of the tortilla closest to you, then top that with about 1 tablespoon cheese.

To fold the burrito, start with the edge closest to you, lifting it and rolling it toward the center. Halfway into the roll, fold both sides toward the center and over the rolled bottom edge. Now continue rolling the bottom until the burrito is fully formed as a log. The refried beans should hold the burrito together.

Place the burrito in the prepared pan, then repeat with the remaining ingredients.

Scatter the remaining ½ cup cheese over the tops of the burritos, then bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned at the edges. Serve with salsa and guacamole on the side for dipping.

here is something magical about a burrito, that combination of crispy tortilla edges that turn doughy soft at the center, all concealing a delicious blend of beans and meat and melted cheese. Splash that sucker with some salsa, sour cream, perhaps a spoonful of guacamole, and that’s a pillow of perfection on your plate.

Usually, a burrito makes a meal. But for my Super Bowl party, I decided to turn the dish into a finger food. Using smaller flour tortillas, I rolled up an army of burritos filled with refried beans, ground beef and cheese. Once you have your ingredients arranged, the rest of the prep is easy.

The burritos also can be assembled in the morning, arranged in the pan, then refrigerated until ready to bake and serve.

Want to make these vegetarian? You can simply leave out the ground beef (make sure you buy vegetarian refried beans) or substitute cooked rice. You can add vegetables, such as onions or mushrooms, but you’ll need to sauté them first, otherwise they won’t have time to cook in the oven (and will make your burritos soggy).

Be sure to let your tortillas warm to room temperature before proceeding with the recipe.

Cold tortillas will crack and split when you try to roll them. Alternatively, you can wrap them in foil and heat them in the oven for a few minutes, or until softened but not toasted.

In today’s deal, look at only the North and South hands. West leads the heart jack against three no-trump.

How should declarer tackle the spade suit?

North’s two-diamond rebid was New Minor Forcing. It announced at least game-invitational values and asked opener to describe his hand further. South denied both three spades and four hearts.

South starts with six top tricks: one spade, three hearts and two clubs. It is logical to try to rake in four spade winners, losing only one trick in the suit.

The obvious-looking line is to cash the ace, the honor from the shorter side first, then to lead toward dummy.

If West plays an honor, declarer’s problems are over. And if West plays low for a second time, South should call for dummy’s queen. If the suit is 3-3, it is a straight guess, whether West has king-third or jack-third. But playing the queen wins when East started with jack-doubleton. (At this point, there is no winning play if East has king-doubleton; declarer will lose always two spade tricks.)

However, there is a better play.

South should win the first trick on the board and lead the spade queen. If East covers with the king, South wins and his mission is accomplished. If East plays low, so does South. This loses only when West has king-third or king-jack-third.

Shock and other life-threatening symptoms of TSS can develop suddenly. TSS is a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing the symptoms of TSS should be taken to a hospital immediately.

Treatment involves fluids and medicines given intravenously to raise blood pressure and improve blood flow to vital organs.

Antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria that are causing the infection and releasing the toxin. If organs begin to fail, a person may need to be connected to machines to keep them alive. If the lungs fail, they may need to be put on a breathing machine. If the kidneys fail, they may need to be connected to a dialysis machine.

Most people with TSS recover completely. Unfortunately, some die – even with prompt treatment in the hospital.

To reduce your risk of developing tissue infections, promptly clean and treat even small skin wounds. To help avoid TSS related to tampon use, change tampons frequently.

Dear Doctor K: I saw a warning about toxic shock syndrome on a box of tampons. What is it, and what does it have to do with tampon use?

Dear Reader: Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare, life-threatening illness triggered by certain bacteria. The two bacteria most often involved are streptococci (“strep”) and staphylococci (“staph”).

The cases caused by streptococci tend to be the most severe. In TSS, toxins (poisons) produced by these bacteria cause a severe drop in blood pressure that can lead to organ failure.

Doctors first became aware of toxic shock syndrome back in the 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, several young women using a particular type of tampon died from TSS. (That tampon was later removed from the market.)

Tampon-related cases of TSS have decreased since then, but tampon use remains a risk factor for TSS. Women who develop TSS are more likely to have used high-absorbency tampons, used tampons continuously for more days of their cycle, and kept a single tampon in place for a longer period of time.

Not all cases of TSS are related to tampon use. In some patients, bacteria that cause TSS enter the body through a wound or puncture. The bacteria that cause TSS often live on the skin. When the skin is damaged by an injury, the bacteria can travel from the surface of the skin into the wound. Once they get inside the wound, they can multiply and spread under the skin’s surface.

Sometimes, however, toxic shock develops after a relatively mild injury, even one in which there is no visible injury to the skin. And sometimes no cause is identified.

Dear Abby: A short time ago, I discovered my parents are “swingers.” I had picked up my mother’s phone to take a picture and an incoming text caught my attention.

When I read it and investigated further, I learned the truth.

Before we go to our seats, we check to see which way has fewer people seated so we disturb the fewest possible.
