By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Councilman Robert O’Dekirk is vying to become the next mayor in Joliet, calling the city’s leadership poor and its economic future directionless.

O’Dekirk, who has been on the city council since 2011, plans to outline his vision for Joliet on Tuesday at the steps of the Joliet Police Station. He’s challenging incumbent Mayor Thomas Giarrante, who plans to run for a second term in the 2015 election and is having a fundraiser in February.

O’Dekirk said the city’s progress has been stalled by partisanship and self-interest.

So far, Giarrante has no problem with O’Dekirk running.

“Let him jump in … let’s see what happens,” he said.

O’Dekirk said leadership under Giarrante has been a failure because of a lack of trust between him, city council members and the public. He said Giarrante does not work well with people he’s not close with.

“You need to be able to work with everyone,” he said. “Not just with people you consider your friends.”

O’Dekirk criticized Giarrante’s recent announcement that he wanted an investigation of leaked documents from the city’s condemnation case to take ownership of the Evergreen Terrace apartment complex.

Council members already decided to pursue an investigation, and O’Dekirk thought they would probably not have wanted the mayor to let the public know until it concluded.

“The mayor took the issue and made it a political witch hunt,” he said.

Giarrante said he told council members the night before he was going to contact the Will County State’s Attorney’s office about the leak, but also was worried whether city officials were being transparent enough about the issue.

“After giving it considerable thought, I thought if we didn’t go public and something happened, we would all be held accountable for it,” he said.

Another issue, O’Dekirk said, is

an economic plan for the city, which he and other city council members pushed for. He said good jobs in Joliet are being replaced by minimum-wage jobs and work offered by temp agencies.

“I think it’s clear Joliet needs an economic development plan and it hasn’t happened,” he said, “and the mayor has had three years to put one together.”

Giarrante said he’s brought numerous businesses to the area and continues to meet with more business owners.

“I can go on and on. I’ve met with people,” he said. “… It’s tough. It’s very competitive and you have to offer incentives. But I have met with many businesses trying to bring them here.”

Giarrante said he does not intend to immediately announce his plans for the mayoral campaign. He said he plans to elaborate on his leadership credentials and experience at another time.

“A lot of things can happen in a year,” he said. “At the proper time, I will tell what my plans are.”

QUICK NEWS Fire damages vacant house Sunday morning JOLIET – Fire caused heavy damage to a vacant residence Sunday morning.

Lt. Pat Strocchia said firefighters were called at 11:13 a.m. to a two-story house in the 500 block of Benton Street, where smoke and flames were showing from the second floor.

Firefighters spent about one-and-a-half hours putting out the blaze. No one was injured.

Police Capt. Tab Jensen said investigators believe

the fire may have been started by vagrants trying to stay warm in the unoccupied house.

VOLUNTEERS SERVE ON MLK DAY ‘A continuation of the idea of equality’

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Although Monday was a federal holiday recognizing Martin Luther King Jr., Beth Rice didn’t spend it relaxing.

Instead, Rice, along with her family, spent the morning scrubbing desks, chairs and anything the clients of United Cerebral Palsy of Illinois Prairieland, 311 S. Reed St., could touch with their hands.

By keeping a facility that serves roughly 100 people with developmental disabilities free of harmful bacteria, Rice was putting into practice King’s ideals of civic responsibility and social justice.

“It’s heightening the awareness that we need people helping the community. … It’s like a continuation of the idea of equality for me,” she said about the holiday.

Rice and her family were among 425 volunteers who spent the holiday celebrating the late civil rights leader by improving Joliet facilities and helping residents for the eighth-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. More than half of the volunteers were students from area schools.

R. Dale Evans, who spearheaded the mass volunteer effort, said volunteers contributed about 1,700 hours of community service during the course of three hours Monday morning. More volunteer projects were completed this year than in the past and Evans, who also works for the Housing Authority of Joliet, credited the support from local businesses.

“They have made this a tradition in the community,” he said. “They make it a ‘day on’ rather than a ‘day off.’”

Volunteers gathered at the Joliet West High School cafeteria for breakfast before break-

ing into groups led by team leaders to complete projects at locations such as Cornerstone Services and Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. They met back at the cafeteria for lunch and reflection on the holiday.

About 20 volunteers were at the Rock Run Preserve trails near Black Road chopping down and burning invasive European and Asian plant species while helping to grow native ones such as big bluestem grass and Virginia wildrye.

Dave Wendt, steward of the preserve, said the brush removal would not only improve the environment but create a space for people to hike.

Many of the volunteers were high school and college students who were learning about herbicide and leadership, said Renee Gauchat, volunteer coordinator with the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

“For them this is a day for giving back,” Gauchat said.

“It’s what Dr. King would’ve wanted.”

For some volunteers, the day of service had other meanings besides King’s ideals.

At the cleaning effort inside the United Cerebral Palsy of Illinois Prairieland, Mercedes Smith, a University of St. Francis student, said she had a cousin with cerebral palsy. She goes to a public school that doesn’t provide the kind of services offered at the school inside United Cerebral Palsy.

“I felt like this was a good opportunity to support what this school does for children with cerebral palsy,” she said.

While student volunteers may have participated to complete community service requirements, Bernadette Quasie, an intern for Evans, encouraged the students before the lunch service to find a purpose for the day.

Rialto: Avoid third-party ticket sites

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Rialto Square Theater concertgoers should beware of ticket scams following an increase in reports of third-party brokers selling fraudulent tickets and charging at inflated prices.

Theater officials sent out a news release Monday warning customers to avoid third-party sites, citing an increase in complaints of scams, whether it be of poor customer service, outrageous ticket prices or the inability to get into a show using what they thought to be a valid ticket.

What customers may not realize is they bought the ticket through a third party pretending to be a legitimate Rialto Square Theater box office site.

Some even include a phone number to call for customer service and a link to purchase tickets, Randy Green, general

manager for the theater, said.

“They’re basically providing a false representation of who they are,” Green said. “People don’t take the time to read and look closely to understand what they’re clicking on, but these websites can even have the Rialto theater’s name, a picture, a phone number.”

The growing popularity of buying event tickets online has caused an uptick in scams, Green said.

The online web address people can safely buy online tickets through is Ticketmaster, the theater’s only online ticket seller, Green said.

Green said the theater also has received complaints of people receiving rude responses or abrupt hang-ups when calling the third-party site’s customers service number for assistance, thinking it’s Rialto Square Theater.

“That’s not us,” he said.

The only phone numbers to purchase over the phone is the Rialto box office at 815-726-6600 or Ticketmaster 800-982-2787. Neither method lead you to the true Rialto box office or an official Rialto ticket online seller.

Websites created by third-party ticket resellers may look legitimate with a phone number and a link to purchase tickets, according to a news release from the Rialto.

When in doubt, customers can always call the Rialto Square Theater box office 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 815-726-6600 to assist with a ticket order.

On occasion, the Rialto Square Theatre does partner with local ticket deal companies such as Groupon, Living Social or Clipper Magazine. These are legitimate businesses and should not be considered a third-party reseller as the tickets are always given at a reduced price.

Such a scenario played out for three customers attempting to attend one of Rialto’s bigger events, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, on Nov. 21, said Kari Mills, director of ticketing and Internet marketing. They arrived with tickets bought through a third-party site, but be-

cause somebody came through with a duplicated ticket before their arrival, the barcode was considered invalid, she said.

Theater officials have no way to offer refunds or assist in other ways if the ticket was bought through a third party because there’s no way to ensure the ticket is valid, Mills said.

Green urged customers to avoid such sites if possible and if there’s any doubt, call the box office.

Hillcrest Shopping Center looking to fill Hallmark location

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Hillcrest Shopping Center is looking for a store to fill the spot Rand’s Hallmark vacated after 30 years in Crest Hill.

The store was a mainstay since 1984 in Hillcrest and was the center of a regional Hallmark chain that grew to 18 locations at

one point. But the business collapsed in June with six stores left. Another Hallmark operator bought the assets and reopened all but the Hillcrest store.

“Nobody has taken the space yet,” Hillcrest Shopping Center manager Rick Pabst said, although he has been talking with some vendors who are interested in setting up shop.

“It’s still available, there is

nothing firm yet.”

Pabst said that because big retail stores are selling more items usually found in card shops, there is less demand for specialty gift shops.

Pabst, who regularly works with the city of Crest Hill, wants to make sure the next occupant of the space contributes to the city.

“We don’t want a mas-

sage parlor, a tattoo parlor or anything like that,” Pabst said. “We have always been the hub of the city, and we’re proud of it. We don’t just want anybody in there. We want somebody that’s good and can contribute to the community.”

Debt along with the economic downturn caused financial strains on Rand’s Hallmark, forcing it to

shut down.

Rand’s Hallmark’s assets were sold Aug. 2 to Kirlin’s Hallmark, an independently owned Hallmark Gold Crown location with 91 stores in 10 states.

Kirlin’s reopened former Rand’s Hallmark stores in Frankfort, Homer Township, Orland Hills, Oswego and Tinley Park.

While those locations opened, Kirlin’s Hallmark

decided not to reopen the Crest Hill location.

“It was just a business decision and we didn’t go for it at the time,” said Laura Sievert, marketing director for Kirlin’s Hallmark.

Sievert said many factors go into determining if a store should be reopened, but she declined to comment on the decision to not open the Crest Hill store.

Police arrest wanted Romeoville man

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police have arrested a Romeoville man wanted on outstanding warrants from three local towns.

Capt. Tab Jensen said tactical officers were at BP Gas, 1411 Riverboat Center, Friday night when they recognized James C. Chestnut, 34, and took him into custody.

Chestnut, of the 1700 block of Raleigh Trail, allegedly led Rockdale police on a high-speed chase in September, was jailed under an alias on DUI charges by Romeoville police in November and was released before his identity was discovered.

He then allegedly beat a woman in a liquor store parking lot the following month in Joliet.

Rockdale Chief Robert Dykstra said Chestnut was being sought for a high-speed chase that started about 8:30 a.m. Sept. 29.

Dykstra said a patrol officer saw a silver 2013 Dodge Avenger leaving the Belleview Avenue home of a woman who had an active order of protection against Chestnut. The officer recognized Chestnut, who also had his license revoked for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Dykstra said Chestnut pulled to

the side of the road when the officer stopped him at West Park Avenue and Cottage Place just inside the Joliet limits, but the Avenger was not put in park and sped away when the officer got out to approach. A chase began that went through McDonough, Dewey, Morgan and Pleasant streets.

“From Center Street the pursuit went onto eastbound I-80 at speeds of over 100 miles per hour,” Dykstra said. “When the Avenger got off onto Richards Street into a residential area, the officer disJames C. continued the purChestnut of Romeoville suit in the interest of public safety.”

Police found the Avenger abandoned behind a residence in the 600 block of Richards Street a short time later, but a Joliet canine unit was unable to track Chestnut, Dykstra said. The Dodge was impounded and a baggie of marijuana and an open alcohol container were found inside, police said.

Judge Roger Rickmon issued a warrant the next day charging Chestnut with aggravated fleeing from police and driving with a suspended license.

While Rockdale police were unable to locate Chestnut, Romeoville police reportedly found him passed out behind the wheel in the middle of the road Nov. 24. Jail records show Chestnut identified himself as “Joseph Johnson,” and he was arrested on DUI and other traffic charges.

Jail records show “Johnson” was released two days later after paying $750 bail. Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said Monday that Will County sheriff’s deputies will investigate why Chestnut’s fingerprints were not matched to his real identity before he was released.

On Dec. 15, Chestnut and a 38-year-old woman were parked in the lot of Twin-Dor Package Liquor, 1509 Plainfield Road, when they began arguing and Chestnut punched her in the face, Jensen said.

“The victim and a clerk both said Chestnut followed her into the store, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her back out to the parking lot where he punched her in the face again and drove away,” Jensen said.

A warrant was issued charging Chestnut with two counts of domestic battery following that incident.

He also is facing charges of obstructing justice and identity theft, according to jail records.

Bitten and punched in the line of duty

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – Police say a suspect in Bolingbrook and a patient in Elwood did not go quietly Sunday.

One man is accused of biting a police officer and a woman is accused of throwing punches as she was being put in an ambulance.

Shortly before 3 p.m. Bolingbrook officers stopped a vehicle occupied by Michael E. Medeiros, 19, and Charles R. Tolliver, 25, near Bedford and Rockhurst roads, according to Lt. Mike Rompa.

Rompa said Medeiros and Tolliver “continuously” threatened the

officers and disobeyed their commands before attacking them.

“One officer was bitten three times by Medeiros, who also attempted to remove the officer’s firearm from the holster during the struggle,” Rompa said.

After both suspects were secured, they were booked into the county jail.

Medeiros, of the first block of Vermont Circle in Bolingbrook, was charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.

Tolliver, of the 200 block of Charlotte Lane in Bolingbrook, was charged with aggravated assault,

battery and resisting arrest.

Later that afternoon in Elwood, Lisa M. Styve, 45, called a crisis line that ended up sending police and an ambulance to her Douglas Street home, Police Chief Fred Hayes said.

“They arrived at 6:21 p.m. to find her in an agitated state. She was combative and punched a paramedic as she was being put in the ambulance then punched a police officer,” Hayes said.

Police used a Taser to subdue Styve, who was then taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center for evaluation, Hayes said. After being released from the hospital, she was booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated battery.

Park district shuffles employee positions

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Township Park District on Monday named a new assistant executive director, just about a week after the controversial resignation of the last one.

Gene Coldwater, formerly the director of parks and project management, will now work under Executive Director Garrett Peck.

Coldwater gets the job after former Assistant Executive Director Cameron Bettin, also a planner for the park district, left the job when his department was eliminated. The park district now is outsourcing planning services to Naperville-based Hitchcock Design Group. Bettin’s departure was officially a resignation, although it included a written agreement that he not criticize

park leadership and paid him $20,000.

Bettin at one time was in line for the executive director job before a new park board put Peck in the position in May. Joe Masters, an equipment supervisor who worked under Coldwater, has been promoted to Coldwater’s vacant position as interim director of parks and project management.

Peck said his old position will be filled through promotion or a new hire.

Masters is a lifelong Plainfield resident who has worked with the park district since 2007. Coldwater, a Joliet resident, has worked on the maintenance staff for the park district since 1993.

“Gene and Joe are valued and trusted employees of the Plainfield park district and richly deserve these new posts of trust and responsibility,” Peck

said in a news release.

“Promoting these two men from inside the organization also means they can both hit the ground running.”

Peck said Coldwater will perform many of the same duties assigned to Bettin when he was in the position, including managing requests for quotations, capital projects and decisions on materials for projects.

But the project planning duties still will be outsourced by Hitchcock, which will report to Coldwater on park district projects.

Bettin and his assistant, James Less, resigned the first week of January. Critics of the park district’s current board of commissioners say the resignations were forced. Peck denied the resignation was forced, saying the accusations were baseless.

The crash happened at 1:31 p.m. on Route 52 just south of Cedar Road.

Keyshaunna L. Lucas, 20, was driving a Dodge Stratus southbound when her

had been in the backseat of the Stratus was hospitalized in critical condition. The occupant of the pickup truck was not injured.

State Police said the crash is under investigation, but they believe snowy weather was a contributing factor.

Funeral arrangements for both Baker and Lucas will be held at Minor-Morris Funeral Home.

Cold temperatures headed back to area

and JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com Another round of arctic air is headed to the area, although it won’t be as bone-chilling as the cold snap two weeks ago.

Wind chills at about 20 below are expected across the area Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The high temperature on Tuesday is expected to be 8 degrees.

“This is about our coolest week of the year on average,” said Mike Bardou, meteorologist in the National Weather Service’s Romeoville office. “It’s not unusual to see temperatures get this low.”

By comparison, on Jan. 7, temperatures dipped to -14 degrees, with wind chills of between 30 and 40 degrees below zero.

Tuesday night, temperatures could dip to -6 degrees, Bardou said, with a wind chill of 20 below Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Temperatures are then expected to moderate slightly. Friday’s high is expected to be near 20 degrees.

In addition to the cold air, there are several chances for light snow throughout the week.

“Nothing major is on the horizon,” Bardou said.

He urged people to limit their time outside in the cold weather.

“Those times you do have to be outside have minimal, if any, exposed skin,” Bardou said.

“Frosbite can set in rather

quickly. Bundle up your face, hands, head, feet, everything. Be outside as little as possible.”

Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox treated two patients with frostbite during the previous cold snap.

And expect the cold to stick around for the foreseeable future.

“There’s no immediate sign of any significant warmup,” Bardou said.

The cold weather also can take a toll on vehicles.

But there are some simple things that motorists can do to keep their cars running.

“Go get your car battery tested, particularly if you know the battery is

between three to five years old,” said Beth Mosher, a spokeswoman for the AAA Chicago Motor Club.

“A good battery has 35 percent less starting power in cold weather.”

During the last cold snap, 40 percent of Chicago Motor Club’s calls were for dead batteries, Mosher said.

She also suggested that motorists check their tire pressure, make sure their fluid levels are where they should be, and to have an emergency car kit in case they find themselves stranded. The kit should contain such items as a cellphone and cellphone charger, blankets, a flashlight and jumper cables, she said.

This opportunity turned into a 55 year privilege. Being a radio announcer was more than a job to Don, it was his life. Don hosted the longest standing bowling show in the nation, called “Ten Pin Topics,” which also lead to a variety of different talk shows. He was also the owner and editor of the Will County Sportsman for 37 years. Don was a die hard Chicago White Sox fan and followed every Joliet sporting team. He was the former president and lifetime member of the Old Timers Baseball Association, the Joliet Noon Lions Club and numerous other clubs. Don was inducted into 14 Hall of Fames. Don had a commitment for fundraising for multiple sclerosis; he did this through hosting the MS Softball Games. Don was known as the Voice of Joliet, a voice which will be truly missed.

Italian conductor Claudio Abbado dies Monday at 80 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROME – Claudio Abbado, a star in the great generation of Italian conductors revered for developing a rapport with members of the world’s leading orchestras while still allowing them their independence, died Monday. He was 80.

Abbado died at home in Bologna after a long illness, said Raffaella Grimaudo, spokeswoman for the Bologna mayor’s office.

Abbado made his debut in 1960 at La Scala in his home city of Milan and went on to be its music director for nearly 20 years.

Among his many other positions were as music director of the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin Philarmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra and as principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Even as he battled illness in his later years, sharply cutting back on his appearances, Abbado founded his own all-star orchestra in Lucerne, Switzerland, and devoted more time to training young musicians and founding youth orchestras in Europe.

Just last year, Italy’s president

paid tribute to him by naming him senator for life. In an unusually personal message of condolences, President Giorgio Napolitano said Abbado had “honored the great musical tradition of our country in Europe and the rest of the world.”

The Berlin Philharmonic, where Abbado was chief conductor from 1990 to 2002, said it was mourning “an extraordinary musician and person.”

“His love of music and his insatiable curiosity were an inspiration to us,” a statement on the orchestra’s website said.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Ricardo Muti said he admired Abbado for the “seriousness and profundity that characterized his life as a musician and as a Maestro.”

Abbado was known for his musical ability, for conducting his programs without scores and for his rapport with orchestra members.

He had suffered health problems for many years, resigning his Vienna Opera post for unspecified health reasons in 1991 and then undergoing stomach cancer surgery in 2000.

Governor hopefuls cool to more marijuana legalization

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Illinois may have a new medical marijuana law on the books, and two other states may have approved the drug’s recreational use, but the candidates for Illinois governor this year don’t support legalizing it outright in their state.

Their positions on whether Illinois should extend its four-year medical cannabis pilot project are not so clear-cut, however, according to the candidates’ answers to a campaign questionnaire sent to them

by The Associated Press.

The question of further legalization could arise on the 2014 campaign trail as sick Illinois patients start getting access to marijuana.

Political experts say medical marijuana hasn’t been a strictly partisan issue and

there are other signs that Illinois could be willing to address full legalization, including Chicago loosening its punishment for those caught with pot.

Quinn, who’s seeking re-election, signed a law in August legalizing the use of medical marijuana on a trial basis for severely ill people. State officials must issue regulations before anyone can sign up, though.

Quinn, who didn’t respond to the candidate questionnaire, explained at the signing that he liked the law’s tight regulations and was moved to support it by testimony from a sick veteran. When asked about the issue Friday, he said only that the rule-making process will take time.

All other candidates for governor and lieutenant governor told AP that legalized recreational use of marijuana shouldn’t be al-

lowed.

Bruce Rauner and state Treasurer Dan Rutherford, both Republicans, simply wrote “No” when asked, “Should marijuana be legalized generally?”

Republican state Sens.

Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard, who both voted against the medical marijuana legislation, explained themselves a little more. Dillard said he listens to law enforcement on the issue; a sheriff’s association opposed the medical marijuana bill over concerns of motorists driving under the influence of marijuana.

“I am opposed to the general legalization of marijuana or any other controlled substances, which are currently subject to regulation and governance by the federal government,” Brady said.

Rauner, a suburban venture capitalist, said he

wouldn’t push extending the four-year pilot program.

But his candidate for lieutenant governor, Evelyn Sanguinetti, disagreed.

The Wheaton City Council member suffers from multiple sclerosis, an illness she manages with daily medication.

“While marijuana does not provide a cure for those dealing with debilitating and terminal conditions, it has been known to provide relief to those dealing with the painful symptoms,” Sanguinetti wrote in her questionnaire. “I’m okay with allowing them to continue to do so within the existing restrictions.”

Quinn’s lone Democratic primary challenger, suburban Chicago activist Tio Hardiman, said he was also opposed to fully legalizing marijuana but approved of extending the pilot program.

Study: Despite pension reform, deficit grows

By KERRY LESTER The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Recent pension reform legislation has been hailed as historic and groundbreaking, but the $160 billion savings plan ultimately won’t make much of a dent in the state’s growing deficits, a report released Tuesday said.

While the changes to the state’s major public pension systems will eliminate

their unfunded liability over the next 25 years, the state’s deficit will increase to $13 billion during that time, according to the University of Illinois’ Institute for Government and Public Affairs study.

Institute researchers had projected a $14 billion deficit – a $1 billion difference – if the state had not implemented pension reform.

“The deficit has got-

ten off the front burner,” Institute Director Chris Mooney said. “And the pension solution, while important in terms of [its effect on] the budget, it’s a red herring.”

Mooney said the Institute’s study was released purposely as campaigns for the 2014 general election begin to heat up.

“We want to make sure people know what’s going on, and don’t get compla-

cent,” Mooney said. “This thing [this deficit] just drops like a rock regardless of what we do.”

The study, which the institute calls its “Fiscal Futures Project,” made projections by estimating savings from the pension reform plan and assuming that the state’s temporary income tax increase will roll back from the current 5 percent to 3.75 percent as scheduled in January of 2015.

NEWS BRIEFS Judge: No disclosure on use of spying CHICAGO – A federal judge in a Chicago terrorism case said the government doesn’t have to disclose whether it employed the kind of phone and Internet surveillance revealed in leaks by ex-government contractor Edward Snowden.

The pretrial ruling dealt only with Adel Daoud’s case. He denies seeking to detonate a bomb outside a Chicago bar in 2012.

Defense lawyers wanted the judge to order the government to say whether it used enhanced surveillance to flag Daoud for investigation. They argued that would have violated his rights.

But Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman said in a docket entry late Friday that Daoud’s attorneys “failed to provide any basis” for an order.

Prosecutors said they won’t use evidence derived directly from enhanced surveillance at trial, so aren’t obliged to disclose if they ever used it.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises reports the Illinois State Board of Education is set to discuss

the federal “Smart Snacks” program Wednesday.

The program restricts the type of snacks that may be sold in schools beginning in the 2014-15 school year.

Among the potential targets are cheese- and candy-flavored versions of popcorn, which was designated the state snack food 11 years ago.

Then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich noted at the time that Illinois is one of the nation’s top popcorn-producing states.

The rules only apply to food and beverages sold at school. They set limits for sugar, fat and salt.

Canadian sentenced to prison for scam EAST ST. LOUIS – A Canadian man has been ordered to spend a decade in U.S. federal prison for his role in a credit card scam.

Prosecutors said Paul Pric of Toronto defrauded more than $10 million from tens of thousands of U.S. consumers. He was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis.

Price’s ex-wife, 50-yearold Elissa Wells, was sentenced to four years and seven months in prison for her part in the scheme.

Authorities said companies operated by the Prices made calls to U.S. residents with credit problems. They said their ventures could provide Visa or MasterCards to consumers for an advanced fee of hundreds of dollars.

Frigid air settling in Dakotas, moving eastward

By DINESH RAMDE The Associated Press MILWAUKEE – Another band of arctic air began creeping into the north Monday, bringing frigid temperatures that could linger for most of the week.

Temperatures plunged below zero in North Dakota and northern Minnesota on Monday morning. The cold front was expected to sweep south into Iowa and as far east as Maine by Tuesday night, and remain through Thursday.

The bitter blast will lead to a swath of subzero temperatures, with highs in the single digits and wind chills of minus 20 or colder, said Paul Collar, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“It’s not to the extent of the last outbreak but it’s

still bitterly cold,” he said, referring to the recent polar vortex that sent temperatures plunging well below zero across much of the country and was blamed for at least a dozen deaths.

Some areas of across the U.S.-Canada border could see nighttime lows in the negative double digits in the next few days, he said.

Portions of Minnesota, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine were under wind chill warnings, where wind chills could be 34 degrees below zero or colder.

“With these temperatures you’re going to have issues with exposed skin and frostbite, but not to the degree of severity of the last outbreak,” he said, describing it as “a normal cold event you’d see in a typical winter.”

SPRINGFIELD – Jonathon Monken has weathered some tough storms in his nearly three years as Illinois Emergency Management Agency director.

In the past year alone Monken has led Illinois’ response to massive flooding, deadly tornadoes and the recent severe cold.

Monken tells Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises each disaster has a “rock-bottom point.”

“There’s always a point where there are so many of these circumstances that you can’t control,” he said.

During the stretch of record-shattering low temperatures and snow ear-

lier this month, he said, rock-bottom came when about 400 cars became stuck along interstates 57 and 70 near Effingham.

The state needed help from the Illinois National Guard to get everyone to safety.

He one of Gov. Pat Quinn’s longest-serving appointees though Monken’s tenure with the administration has had its own rough patches.

Quinn appointed Monken in March 2009 to head the Illinois State Police, but senators refused the appointment because he had no formal police training. He resigned that post in February 2011 and was immediately named to take over the emergency management agency.

Iran, U.S., Europe start implementing nuclear deal

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI and JOHN–THOR DAHLBURG The Associated Press TEHRAN – Iran unplugged banks of centrifuges involved in its most sensitive uranium enrichment work Monday, prompting the United States and European Union to partially lift economic sanctions as a landmark deal aimed at easing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program went into effect.

The mutual actions – curbing atomic work in exchange for some sanctions relief – start a six-month clock for Tehran and the world powers to negotiate a final accord that the Obama administration and its European allies say will be intended to ensure Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon.

In the meantime, the interim deal puts limits on Iran’s program – though it continues low levels of uranium enrichment. Tehran denies its nuclear program is intended to produce a bomb.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague called the deal “an important milestone” – but not the ultimate goal.

“It’s important that other sanctions are maintained and the pressure is maintained for a compre-

hensive and final settlement on the Iranian nuclear issue,” Hague said.

The Europeans are aiming to start negotiations on a final deal in February, though no date or venue has been agreed on yet. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Saturday that Tehran is ready to enter talks as soon as the interim deal goes into force.

In the first step of the interim accord, Iranian state TV said authorities disconnected cascades of centrifuges producing 20-percent enriched uranium at the Natanz facility in central Iran. The broadcast said international inspectors were on hand to witness the stoppage before leaving to monitor suspension of enrichment at Fordo, another site in central Iran.

Iran also started Monday to convert part of its stockpile of 20-percent enriched uranium to oxide, which can be used to produce nuclear fuel but is difficult to reconvert for weapons use, the official IRNA news agency said.

After receiving independent confirmation of the steps from the United Nations watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, EU foreign ministers in Brussels approved the partial sanctions suspension.

The White House also announced the suspension of some American sanctions on Iran.

“These actions represent the first time in nearly a decade that Iran has verifiably enacted measures to halt progress on its nuclear program, and roll it back in key respects,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

He said Iran also is providing U.N. inspectors with increased transparency, including more frequent and intrusive inspections.

“Taken together, these concrete actions represent an important step forward,” he said.

Under the deal reached in November in Geneva, Iran agreed to halt its 20 percent enrichment program but continue enrichment up to 5 percent.

U.S. hails withdrawal of Iran invite to Syria meet

By MATTHEW LEE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The United States on Monday welcomed U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon’s decision to rescind his invitation to Iran to attend an international conference on Syria this week, saying it hoped the move would refocus attention on the goals of the meeting.

“We are hopeful that, in the wake of today’s announcement, all parties can now return to focus on the task at hand, which is bringing an end to the suffering of the Syrian people and beginning a process toward a long overdue political transition,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement. The statement was released

shortly after the U.N. announced that Ban had withdrawn the invitation that he had issued to Iran on Sunday and the main western-backed Syrian opposition group dropped its threat to boycott the conference, known as Geneva II. Secretary of State John Kerry is to attend the conference, which is actually being held in the Swiss

town of Montreux, on Wednesday.

U.S. officials said earlier Monday that they expected the United Nations would reevaluate the invitation and rescind it unless Iran fully and publicly endorsed the aim of the meeting, which is to begin to prepare a transitional government for Syria that would pave the way for democratic elec-

tions there. That goal was outlined in 2012 in the socalled “Geneva Communique,” to which the U.S. and others said all conference participants must embrace. Iran had refused to do so, although the U.N. said Ban had received assurances from Tehran that it would.

Public statements from Iran after Ban issued the invitation fell “well short”

of what was required, the U.S. officials said.

The officials restated U.S. complaints about Iran’s role in Syria’s civil war, including arming Assad’s forces and sending fighters to assist his side.

They said Iran’s actions continued to exacerbate sectarian tensions and the deteriorating situation on the ground rather than easing them.

A crumbling Sochi hides behind Olympic facades

By NATALIYA VASILYEVA The Associated Press SOCHI, Russia – A shining new $635 million highway on the outskirts of Sochi stands next to a crumbling apartment block with a red “SOS!” banner on its roof.

The residents of 5a Akatsy Street have lived for years with no running water or sewage system.

Construction for the 2014 Winter Games has made their lives more miserable: The new highway has cut them off from the city center. Even their communal outhouse had to be torn down because it was found to be too close to the new road and ruled an eyesore.

The slum is one of the many facets of a hidden

dark side in the host city of next month’s Winter Olympics, which stands side-by-side with the glittering new construction projects that President Vladimir Putin is touting as a symbol of Russia’s transformation from a dysfunctional Soviet leviathan to a successful, modern economy.

While state-run TV trains its cameras on luxury malls, sleek stadiums and high-speed train links, thousands of ordinary people in the Sochi area put up with squalor and environmental waste: villagers living next to an illegal dump filled with Olympic construction waste, families whose homes are sinking into the earth, city dwellers suffering chronic power cuts de-

spite promises to improve electricity.

Putin promoted the Sochi Games, which begin Feb. 7, as a unique opportunity to bring investment to the Black Sea resort and improve living standards for its 350,000 residents.

Looking back at those promises, many residents, weary from years of living in the midst of Russia’s biggest construction project in modern history, say they have yet to see any improvement in their lives and point to an array of negative effects.

“Everyone was looking forward to the Olympics,” said Alexandra Krivchenko, a 37-year-old mother of three who lives on Akatsy street. “We just never thought they would leave us ... in the middle of a fed-

eral highway!”

People elsewhere in Sochi and surrounding villages have seen the quality of their life decline because of Olympic construction.

In the village of Akhshtyr, residents complain about an illegal landfill operated by an Olympics contractor that has fouled the air and a stream that feeds the Sochi water supply. Waste from another illegal dump in the village of Loo has slid into a brook that flows into the already polluted Black Sea. In the village of Mirny, just outside the Olympic Park, rumbling trucks have damaged foundations and caused homes to sink. And right across the railroad tracks from the Akatsy building, another multifamily residence has become prone to flooding

after an Olympics-related road was built nearby.

Sochi residents also complain about widespread environmental damage, including the destruction of forests and the contamination of a river running down to the sea.

Near the Olympic Park, a popular sandy beach was paved over for the development of a port that was never built.

The Winter Games were intended to showcase Russia’s resurgence from the collapse of the Soviet Union two decades ago.

what had changed in the city for the better, Anatoly Pakhomov started talking about a new shopping mall and a Louis Vuitton store as symbols of positive change.

Amid such pride in status symbols, Sochi has fallen short in providing basic necessities, residents say.

Two giant power stations have been commissioned to provide electricity for the Olympic venues and the city, but power shortages across the city are still ubiquitous. At a recent televised meeting with Putin, Russia’s energy minister said the grid was still being built and was unlikely to come online before Saturday, less than two weeks before the opening ceremonies.

Family of man held in N. Korea worried, encouraged

By DOUG ESSER The Associated Press SEATTLE– The family of an American missionary held more than a year in North Korea was heartbroken and encouraged by a brief news conference in which Kenneth Bae, wearing a gray cap and inmate’s uniform with the number 103 on his chest, apologized and said he committed anti-government acts.

“Our end goal is to see Kenneth reunited so he can recover emotionally and physically. He has chronic health problems,” family friend Derek Sciba told The Associated Press.

Sciba is a friend of Bae’s sister, Terri Chung of Edmonds, and part of a group pushing for Bae’s release.

“On the one hand it’s heartbreaking to see him in a prison uniform at the mercy of folks in North Korea, but on the other hand it’s encouraging to see him and that he’s able to speak,” Sciba said.

Bae made the comments at what he called a press conference held at his own request. He was under guard during the appearance. It is not unusual for prisoners in North Korea to say after their release that they spoke in similar situations under duress.

“I believe that my problem can be solved by close cooperation and agreement between the American government and the government of this country,” he said.

Bae was arrested in November 2012 while leading a tour group and accused of crimes against the state before being sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

He was moved to a hospital last summer in poor health.

He made an apology Monday and said he had committed anti-government acts.

Bae said a comment last month by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden had made his situation more difficult.

“The vice president of United States said that I was detained here without any reason,” Bae said.

“And even my younger sister recently told the press that I had not committed any crime and I know that the media reported it.

“I think these comments infuriated the people here enormously. And for this reason, I am in a difficult situation now. As a result, although I was in medical treatment in the hospital for five months until now, it seems I should return to prison. And moreover there is greater difficulty in discussions about my amnesty.”

Postal unions angry over Staples spots

By SAM HANANEL The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The opening of Postal Service retail centers in dozens of Staples stores around the country is being met with threats of protests and boycotts by the agency’s unions.

The new outlets are staffed by Staples employees, not postal workers, and labor officials say that move replaces well-paying union jobs with low-wage, nonunion workers.

“It’s a direct assault on our jobs and on public postal services,” said Mark Dimondstein, president of the 200,000-member American Postal Workers Union.

The dispute comes as the financially struggling Postal Service continues to form partnerships with private companies, and looks to cut costs and boost revenues. The deal with Staples began as a pilot program in November

at 84 stores in California, Georgia, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania as a way make it easier for customers to buy stamps, send packages or use Priority and certified mail.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said the program has nothing to do with privatization and everything to do with customer service and driving up demand for the agency’s products.

“The privatization discussion is a ruse,” Donahoe said in an interview.

“We have no interest in privatizing the Postal Service. We are looking to grow our business to provide customer convenience to postal products.”

Staples spokeswoman Carrie McElwee referred questions about union concerns to the Postal Service. She said the company “continually tests new products and services to better meet the needs of our customers.”

Union leaders fear that if the Staples program is successful, the Postal Service will want to expand it to more than 1,500 of the company’s other stores.

That could siphon work and customers away from nearby brick-and-mortar post offices, taking jobs from postal workers and even leading traditional post offices to close.

Union leaders have been visiting Staples stores to meet with managers, asking them to share the union’s displeasure with upper management.

Dimondstein asked to meet with the Staples CEO Ronald Sargent, who has declined.

The union plans to hold “sustained” protests this month at Staples stores in the San Francisco and San Jose, Calif., area that would be expanded elsewhere. Union officials also are considering how they can exert pressure on Staples shareholders.

“If Staples insists on continuing to refuse to staff those stores with postal workers, we’re going to urge people to take their business elsewhere,” Dimondstein said.

The union says it’s not asking to shut down the program. It wants the counters to be run by postal employees, not workers hired by Staples.

The average postal clerk earns about $25 an hour, according to the union, plus a generous package of health and retirement benefits. The Staples post office counters are run by nonunion workers often making little more than the minimum wage.

The Postal Service increasingly has looked to work with the private sector to help increase business. In November, it announced a lucrative deal with Amazon to begin package delivery on Sunday.

The agency has struggled for years with declin-

ing mail volume, but the lion’s share of its financial plight stems from a 2006 congressional requirement that it make annual $5.6 billion payments to cover expected health care costs for future retirees. It has defaulted on three of those payments. The Postal Service lost $5 billion over the past year, though operating revenue rose 1.2 percent.

So far, the Postal Service has rebuffed the union’s demands.

As far as who will staff the counters, “that’s Staples’ business. They make their own business decisions and it has nothing to do with us,” Donahoe said.

Donahoe said he’d like to see post office counters in every Staples store “as soon as possible.” But he doesn’t see them as replacing any of the 33,000 traditional post offices. He said he sees the program as an opportunity “to grow the business.”

NEWS BRIEF Stocks lower as earnings fall short NEW YORK – Investors weren’t impressed with the earnings news from big U.S. companies Friday.

Intel slumped after giving a weak revenue forecast and General Electric dropped after its profit margins fell short. Capital One also fell after the bank’s earnings missed expectations.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 7.19 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,838.70. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 41.55 points, or 0.3 percent, to 16,458.56.

The Nasdaq composite fell 21.11 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,197.58.

The S&P 500 index retreated from a record high close on Wednesday.

It ended the week 0.5 percent lower and continued its lackluster start to January.

Wedding insurance expands as nuptials get pricier

By MICHAEL MELIA The Associated Press HARTFORD, Conn. – Worried about the groom getting cold feet? There’s an insurance policy for that.

With the cost of the average American wedding reaching about $26,000, insurers have been selling a growing number of policies to protect against losses from extreme weather, illness and, in

one firm’s case, even a sudden change of heart.

Cheryl Winter spent $500 for Hartford-based Travelers Cos. Inc. to cover her daughter’s $50,000 destination wedding last October in New Orleans, where her biggest concern was a potential hurricane.

The weather cooperated, but the limousine never showed up. Her daughter took a taxi cab to the church, and they used the insurance policy to claim

the deposit money they couldn’t get back from the limo driver.

The insurance is offered by a small number of U.S. companies. Insurers declined to provide data on the number of customers beyond saying they are growing steadily. It can cover losses from issues ranging from bankrupt wedding halls to cancelations forced by unexpected military deployments. Travelers says

issues with vendors account for about a quarter of the claims, with most of those related to issues with photographers or videographers.

For Travelers, an insurance giant with annual revenue of $26 billion, the policies will not make or break the bottom line. But the wedding insurance it began selling in 2007 is also a way to connect with a couple who might later think of the company for

home insurance and other life milestones.

“It could be the beginning of a relationship with a young couple,” said Ed Charlebois, a Travelers vice president for personal insurance.

Wedsafe, backed by Aon, also offers wedding insurance, which differs little from the specialty insurance that firms may offer for other kinds of events and celebrations.

about a relationship souring before the exchange of vows, Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. offers change of heart insurance. It’s been available since 2007, but the program administrator said the fraud rate soared in the early years as policies were bought for couples who were known to be fighting. That coverage now applies only if the bride or groom calls off the wedding more than nine months beforehand.

Give Dirksen his due on civil rights reform People across the country rightly paid tribute Monday to the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of advancing civil rights for blacks through non-violent means.

A federal holiday was established to honor the memory of King, who was killed by an assassin in 1968.

Because King was born Jan. 15, 1929, the third Monday of January was selected as the date for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. President Ronald Reagan signed the King holiday bill into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986.

In his push to advance the cause of civil rights, King had help.

One of those key supporters was a U.S. senator from Illinois who also was born in January – Jan. 4, 1896, to be precise.

Everett McKinley Dirksen, a Republican, played a crucial role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Dirksen was Senate minority leader at a time when Republicans were outnumbered by Democrats, 67 to 33. But history tells us that, because a southern bloc of 21 Democratic senators had always succeeded in blocking civil rights legislation through the filibuster, the chances for passage depended on Dirksen and his fellow Republicans.

Dirksen burnished his statesman credentials by delivering 27 Republican votes to help kill a 2-month filibuster, 71-29, on June 10, 1964. Days later, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was approved.

The executive secretary of the NAACP, Roy Wilkins, praised Dirksen’s leadership on the bill, writing that it “will become a significant part of the history of this century.”

Four years later, Dirksen played a key role in the approval of the Open Housing Act of 1968 – the year that King was tragically slain.

Dirksen survived King by only a year. He died in 1969 after surgery for lung cancer.

The Dirksen Congressional Center is based in Pekin, Dirksen’s hometown. It keeps alive the senator’ legacy of working in a bipartisan manner to accomplish important goals.

But Dirksen has been gone for nearly 45 years now. Many younger Illinoisans have no personal recollection of his leadership.

As the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act approaches, let us remember the gallant role played by Sen. Dirksen to get it approved.

Rauner still polling as lead Republican candidate A solid week of horribly negative media coverage of Bruce Rauner was apparently outweighed by lots and lots of television ads because his numbers are still rising.

A new Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll found that Rauner’s lead increased in the Republican gubernatorial primary since late November.

The poll of 1,139 likely Republican primary voters taken Jan. 14 found Rauner getting 34 percent of the vote, with state Sen. Bill Brady at 17 percent, Treasurer Dan Rutherford at 15 percent and state Sen. Kirk Dillard bringing up the rear at 9 percent.

A We Ask America poll taken Nov. 26 after Rauner launched his holiday season TV ad blitz showed Rauner leading with 26 percent, to Brady’s 18 percent, to Rutherford’s 17 percent to Dillard’s 10 percent. Those numbers confirmed a Public Policy Polling survey taken just days before, which had Rauner leading with 24 percent.

So, essentially, the rest of the pack hasn’t moved at all, while Rauner has added eight points to his lead. Last

“Buoyed by a constant stream of quality TV ads, Mr. Rauner continues to gain ground,” said We Ask America pollster Greg Durham. “For now, it does not appear the negative press he’s recently received has resulted in producing any significant speed bumps.

This race is far from settled, but the Rauner camp must feel like their plan is working.”

As you already know, twin scandals have buffeted Rauner’s campaign since the holiday season ended. He’s been hammered extensively for a December comment that surfaced in early January of Rauner demanding that the minimum wage be cut by a dollar an hour. Last week, the media focused on Rauner’s successful effort to clout his suburban daughter into a Chicago

public school, followed by a $250,000 contribution to that school.

But “earned media” attacks don’t work like they used to, particularly in GOP primaries where a hardcore strand of voters tends to discount the “mainstream media.”

Most importantly, though, is that none of Rauner’s opponents have yet to run a single TV ad. Paid media, and in particular television, moves numbers.

Period. End of story. And Rauner has had the TV all to himself.

Rauner’s massive TV spending is having a profound impact. Just 25 percent of GOP primary voters say they’re undecided. Rauner leads in almost every geographic region in the state, with his biggest numbers racked up in the vote-rich collar counties. There, Rauner scores a whopping 44 percent.

He’s also way ahead in suburban Cook County, with 37 percent. And he has 27 percent in downstate, which puts him 8 points ahead of Brady and Rutherford.

Plainfield North rolls over Lemont

The Tigers went almost three minutes and a half-dozen possessions before denting the scoreboard Monday afternoon during the Joliet Central MLK Day of Hoops. But Jake Nowak opened the flood gates with a traditional three-point play for a 3-2 lead, and North never looked back en route to a 63-46 victory.

“For some reason we haven’t started well lately, but fortunately our defense has been keeping us in it,”

said Tigers coach Bob Krahulik, whose team is 14-3 and has won seven straight beginning with three at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament to snag the consolation title.

With three of North’s first four possessions ending in turnovers, Krahulik noted the Tigers “could have been behind 6-0 or 8-0.”

However, Lemont had trouble finding the basket, shooting 6-of-27 in a first half that ended with North in control 31-15.

“There was a good club on the floor. Unfortunately, it wasn’t mine,” Lemont coach Rick Runaas said.

Trevor Stumpe scored 19 points and Kevin Krieger and Jake Nowak 11 for North, which outrebounded Lemont (9-8) 44-28.

“Our shots weren’t falling [the Tigers shot 11-of-32 the first half] but we had great ball movement at times,” Krahulik said. “We could get to the hole at any time.”

The Tigers led comfort-

ably the entire second half, and Krahulik used reserves extensively in both halves.

“Those kids work just as hard in practice as the other guys,” he said.

“That’s one of our team goals every game, to get a big lead,” Stumpe said. “It’s great to see the reserves having fun on the court.

“It’s good for us [regulars] to get some rest, too.

We played Friday, today and play Friday and Saturday this weekend.”

The match-up Friday is at Minooka, where the Tigers will attempt to do no worse than maintain a share of the Southwest Prairie Conference lead with Plainfield South.

Yorkville bests Lincoln-Way West

During the second of seven boys varsity basketball games at the MLK Day of Hoops, Domark came off the bench midway through the second quarter with his team ahead, 19-16. From there, the junior single-handily engineered an 11-2 run to give Yorkville a 30-18 lead.

Trailing by as many as 16 points, The Warriors clawed back in the second half but could not close the gap, losing 59-41.

“I had him scouted pretty well, but he was lightsout in the second quarter,” said Lincoln-Way West head coach John White.

“He knocked down four straight shots, stretched the lead to 12 and really took us out of our comfort zone.”

Domark added a bucket in the second half, finishing with 16 points for the Foxes, who notched their third win in four days. Following Monday’s victory, Domark said he was excited to help Yorkville complete the holiday weekend sweep.

“It’s been a long, but rewarding few days,” Domark said. “Even though I didn’t have the

But Lincoln-Way West could not maintain their shooting accuracy in the second, as the Yorkville defense limited the Warriors scorers to five second-quarter points.

“Yorkville’s defensive intensity made us a little uncomfortable,” White said. “As a result, we missed a lot of shots that we normally make. We’re going to have to learn how to handle defensive pressure a little better going forward.”

The Warriors had won four out of five games prior to Monday’s matchup. On Friday, Lincoln-Way West defeated Andrew to set a new school record for most victories in a season.

Sitting in fourth place in the Southwest Suburban Blue Conference, White likes his team’s standing as the push for the playoffs steadily approaches.

He noted that the Warriors’ youth will soon be tested as the team prepares for five straight games at home, then finishes February with four consecutive road games.

“We are undefeated against [Class] 3A competition, so that’s big going into playoffs,” White said.

“We start a freshman [Marco Pettinato] and a sophomore [Jon Marotta], but I’ve been very pleased with their play and how they have handled themselves.”

Bloom runs away late

Everything was on time, and the games for the most part were competitive.

The competitive part remained, but things be-

gan to happen in the 4:30 p.m. game, when Sandburg needed two overtimes to beat Crete-Monee, 75-65. Then came Joliet West’s wild 79-78 victory over Rich Central on D’Anthony Wright’s putback at the buzzer.

After waiting through the long day, Joliet Central took the court for the first time in 10 days

at about 8:20 p.m., about 50 minutes later than the scheduled start.

Perhaps it was the late hour, but the Steelmen and Bloom staged a rollercoaster-like finale. Bloom mounted the last run and prevailed, 67-60.

Central (11-6) went on a 12-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to lead, 55-49, and get the crowd

excited. Moments later, however, Bloom (11-6) retaliated. The Trojans used a 9-0 run that grew to 16-2 to put it away.

The main culprit for the Steelmen was the inability to take care of the ball. They committed 23 turnovers and Bloom turned many of them into points.

Central fell behind,

24-8, early in the second quarter and appeared on the verge of being blowout. Coach Jeff Corcoran’s team righted the ship, however, behind Antonio Dyson and Jonah Coble and crawled back, 34-25, at half.

Junior guard Jerry Gillespie had two assists and two driving layups after Bloom turnovers to

open the second half and Coble hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 36-36 early in the third quarter.

From that point, it was back and forth until the Trojans’ final run.

Coble finished with 14 points and Jaylen McGee also had 14 for Central, 12 in the second half. Dyson scored 11 and Gillespie chipped in with 9.

Wright’s buzzer beater lifts Joliet West over Rich Central

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Seconds after the final buzzer sounded Monday, the officials convened briefly at halfcourt, debating if Joliet West’s D’Anthony Wright released a game-winning shot before the clock struck zero.

The referees – who initially counted the bucket before waiving it off moments later – eventually awarded the buzzer-beater to Wright and and Joliet West, giving the Tigers a thrilling 79-78 victory over Rich Central at the MLK Day of Hoops.

Although the officiating crew wavered momentarily, the 5-foot-11 junior got the shot off before time expired.

“The shot was out of my hands before I heard the buzzer, so I knew it counted,” Wright said, recalling the final play of the game.

“I saw the shot go off the backboard as I was running toward the hoop. I knew that I was going to be in a great position for the offensive rebound, so I just went up as hard as I could and got the put-back.”

Before Wright’s game-winner, Rich Central grabbed a one-point lead when Marcus Smith stole the ball and fed Arthur Sutton for an open layup, forcing Joliet Central coach Nick DiForti to use a timeout with nice seconds remaining.

Inbounding under their own basket, the Tigers charged up the court and into the lane before kicking the ball out to Alias Roberts-Burnett at the top of the key. With just under five seconds left, Roberts-Burnett drove right, where his shot over a slew of defenders glanced off the backboard.

All the while, an untouched Wright had snuck in behind the defense.

Wright’s basket capped a wild, high-octane affair between the two teams.

Leading by as many as 15 points in the first half, the Tigers took a 47-36 advantage into halftime.

But, coming out of the locker room, Rich Central creeped back into the game, cutting the deficit to 10 points at the end of the third quarter, then four points following a pair of free throws with four minutes left.

Rich Central seemingly stole the momentum and the game before Wright’s heroics sent the crowd to their feet.

Wright and Elliot Fizer led a balanced Tigers attack with 11 points each.

Loss of a community’s best friend ‘Don Ladas didn’t really contribute, he built it’ VIEWS Dick Goss The day I started as The Herald-News sports editor in 1983, Don Ladas contacted me for an interview. It must have lasted a halfhour, and it aired in its entirety on WJOL Radio.

From that point, Don was one of my best friends and most ardent supporters. Through eras when some believed The Herald-News and WJOL should keep their distance, it was never that way with us. We helped each other.

We were friends. We felt the Joliet sports community would win if we worked together.

Ladas, 85, died Sunday after a long illness. So long, ol’ buddy.

Maybe one reason I felt such a bond with Ladas was the approach we shared when it came to local sports. We felt there were good stories to be told, positive ways to

approach the story, even when your team lost.

Ladas’ biography, “The Voice Of Joliet ... The Life and Times of Hall of Fame Radio Broadcaster Don Ladas,” written by former The Herald-News sports writer Gary Seymour, quotes several big names in local athletics about his impact.

For example, from longtime Joliet major league pitcher Bill Gullickson: “I don’t know if you could say he’s made a contribution to the Joliet sports community – he is the Joliet sports community. He didn’t really contribute, he built it.”

From legendary Lockport basketball coach Bob Basarich: “I wonder if he has any enemies. How can you get mad at a person who’s never said anything bad about you or your program? He is the legend and the icon of the Joliet area.”

Induction into the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame and so many other halls of fame and other honors do not tell his

Ladas was entrenched in the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will

County when I returned to Joliet in 1983. He got me involved, got me on the board of directors and

now I am beginning a twoyear term as president.

What a great group to be involved with, and I owe it all to Don. Through the years, the White Sox played occasional mid-week day games. Don called me several times a season to see if I would be available to go to this game or that one with him.

I always considered myself a great Sox fan.

But guys like Don and Boots Galli have me beat.

When the Sox trained in Sarasota, Fla., Don was there being a fan and gathering radio interviews, year after year. As for Boots, I don’t know of anyone who had a longer streak of home openers attended.

The local bowling community never has had a bigger promoter than Ladas. He brought boxing programs to town. He was a former president of the Joliet Noon Lions Club in addition to a former president of the Old Timers.

He organized the Multiple Sclerosis benefit softball

games that were such a hit for years.

For 30 years, he went out in the nasty winter weather to do live broadcasts of the Wish Upon A Star Foundation Softball Game in the Snow. I was there with him most of those years, and for a while afterward.

Don was there because of his friendship with Wish executive director Don West, because sports celebrities were there and because the foundation grants wishes to seriously and terminally ill children in the greater Will County area. He always was available to promote a good cause.

I have left my wife Jeannine alone countless nights through the years because something was happening that involved local sports. I can only imagine how often Mary Lou Ladas, Don’s widow, flew solo.

I have a feeling she also knew a long time ago what a special guy she was sharing with the Joliet community.

Determination led Wiedeman to broadcast booth CHICAGO – John Wiedeman is scrawling numbers across a blank piece of paper. Memories are flowing.

The Blackhawks radio play-by-play announcer wants to give more than a somewhere-in-the-ballpark answer regarding how many games he has called, including the minors and the NHL, in his broadcast career.

Wiedeman wants to get it right. He always wants to get it right.

Well, let’s see. There were two years in Muskegon, followed by two years in Worcester, plus Cincinnati, plus Philadelphia, plus the New York Islanders, and last but not least the past eight seasons with the Blackhawks.

Rows of numbers fill the page. Wiedeman tallies them in his head.

613 minor league regular-season games + 42 playoff games = 655.

1,001 NHL regular-sea-

655 + 1,112 = 1,767.

About seven hours later would come Game No. 1,768, a hard-fought contest between the Blackhawks and the Colorado Avalanche. And then Game No. 1,769 as the Hawks hosted Anaheim, and Game No. 1,770 as the Hawks hosted Boston.

Which brings us to Game No. 1,771 on Wednesday against Detroit.

Wiedeman, 56, chuckled as he looked at his math project, which sat next to a briefcase filled with notes for that night’s game against the Avalanche. He arrived to the United Center about nine hours early, as usual, so he could watch morning skate, finalize his notes, and conduct

pregame interviews with players.

What did he make of his paper trail of history?

“I can’t believe I still have a voice,” said Wiedeman, who calls games on WGN-AM 720 alongside Troy Murray. “I’m a lucky guy.

I’ll just keep it at that.”

He almost never made it to John Game No. 1.

Wiedeman Long before Wiedeman served as the voice for two Stanley Cup championships and was named as the 2013 Illinois Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, he was a hockey fan with a big dream.

The year was 1992, and Wiedeman was living in an apartment in Villa Park and bar tending at Zanies

Comedy Club in Mount Prospect. His boss at Zanies, T.X. Jones, allowed him to have a flexible work schedule so he could cover Blackhawks games as an unpaid reporter for WCSJAM, a small radio station based in Morris.

After the final game of the season – a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final – Wiedeman was

not yet ready to leave the stadium. He decided to introduce himself to Don Cherry, a Canadian broadcasting legend.

“I hung out at Gate three and one-half, and I waited for him,” Wiedeman said. “He came up the stairs from the dressing rooms, and I had never met him before, and I thought, ‘This guy may tell me to get lost.’ But he didn’t.”

Instead, Cherry listened as Wiedeman asked for advice on pursuing a career as a play-by-play announcer.

Be persistent, Cherry said. Go meet people.

Refuse to be swayed by rejection. Because all it takes is one person to open the door, and you’re in.

Cherry wasn’t finished.

“He says, ‘Once you’re in, then you have to be classy, honorable, hard working, professional,’ ” Wiedeman said. “ ‘You have to show everybody in the business that the decision somebody made to hire you was a good one.

And when you’re on the air, you have to serve the game of hockey.’ Because that’s, in a sense, what we do.”

Wiedeman was inspired.

Kane on the merge of busting out of 10 game slump

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com For two markable months, Patrick Kane virtually was unstoppable.

With the puck seemingly always on his stick, he was firing pinpoint backhanders, wheeling no-look passes and undressing defenders nightly. He was so good – and so consistently good – that he was named the NHL’s player of the month in November and December, racking up 16 goals and 26 assists in 29 games.

Those are eye-popping totals from one of most skilled players in the

world and the best run he has had in his stellar career.

“The first 40-something games were pretty amazing,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “It’s hard to do what he was doing game in, game out.”

That said, it’s exactly what Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby does routinely – every month, every season. And it’s why even Kane can see the Art Ross Trophy he would love to add to his already-impressive trophy case is going to be awfully difficult to come by as long as Crosby’s around.

“He produces every

night,” Kane said. “He’s fun to watch. Even on nights where he maybe doesn’t have his best game, he still comes out of there with two assists or a goal and an assist. Then there are games where it seems like he’s determined, and he’s the best player in the world and just dominates the game. You’re like, ‘Wow, this guy is amazing.’

I think he’s the best player in the league, for sure.”

Kane still is in that conversation and still in the running to be a Hart Trophy finalist as the NHL’s most valuable player. But he has proved to be human of late, and a 10-game

goal-scoring drought – his longest since the 2008-09 season – has dropped him off the scoring-race pace.

Kane has only three assists in those 10 games.

So although he was only three points behind Crosby at the end of his torrid stretch, he was 12 back (6856) entering the Penguins’ game Monday, despite having played three more games than Crosby.

Incredibly, Crosby has gone without a point in only nine games this season. Kane, even with a stretch of 26 out of 27 games with at least a point, has 15.

A healthy Crosby sets

the bar almost impossibly high for the rest of the league. But it gives Kane, who watches a lot of hockey and keeps tabs on the other great players around the league, something to strive for.

“The thing is [being] consistent,” he said.

“That’s the biggest thing about it. To do that for 82 games is where he’s at, and I’m not, I guess. Consistency is the biggest thing, just to keep that chugging along the whole year. I was real hot and right there with him, and then he kind of continues and keeps trotting on.”

Kane seems to be on the

verge of busting out of his slump. He has been more active in the offensive zone since Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw were put on his line four games ago.

He watched highlights of his hot streak, reminding himself how much more “dangerous” he was off the rush. He talked with his dad about going back to what was working in November and December, when he was shooting low.

The high shots are the prettier ones and the open spaces in the top corners can be inviting, but low shots generate more rebounds and still can sneak through.

Rice, Sanders try to bring interest in Pro Bowl

By OSKAR GARCIA The Associated Press HONOLULU – Deion Sanders is giving Jerry Rice one concession as Pro Bowl week begins: The record-setting wide receiver will call the coin toss Tuesday that starts the process of picking teams.

Besides that, the Hall of Fame cornerback claims he has the upper hand under the game’s new schoolyard-style format.

“I think it is going to be a blowout,” Sanders said.

“I don’t think Jerry has strategized.”

Rice’s response: “That’s not going to happen. I have a pretty good mindset of where I want to go.”

The Rice-Sanders rivalry is just one of several moves the NFL is using to try to rekindle interest in the Pro Bowl, set for Sunday in Hawaii. The game has been criticized as too lax in recent years by fans and even Commissioner Roger Goodell, putting the future of the game in question.

The biggest change – a two-day draft on Tuesday and Wednesday that will determine teams in a new “unconferenced” game – responds by targeting

player egos and fan love for fantasy football.

Instead of briefly mentioning a player’s accomplishments during a quick cameo in the all-star game, Rice and Sanders will make choices that reveal the players they believe to be the best among the best – even all-stars don’t want to be picked last in a game with no bad players.

“You want to embrace good-natured ribbing and chop busting,” said Mike Muriano, senior coordinating producer at NFL Network, which is running the draft and televising its second part live.

The league was announcing replacements throughout Monday for players missing the game because of injury or the Super Bowl. Andrew Luck of Indianapolis and Nick Foles of Philadelphia are replacing the quarterbacks in the Super Bowl, Denver’s Peyton Manning and Seattle’s Russell Wilson. Running backs Eddie Lacy and Alfred Morris will step in for Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch, while Alshon Jeffery and Larry Fitzgerald replace Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas.

Rice and Sanders aren’t being too specific about how they’ll make their

picks, though Sanders has said he doesn’t want any Pro Bowlers on his team who have played in more than four all-star games.

“You want what you want,” Sanders said. “I know the guys that are going to cover. No matter what, they’re not cutting no deals.”

Rice said he’s not paying Sanders too much attention because his former 49ers teammate could be trying to misdirect him.

“That might be his strategy – he might go the opposite way and try to select some veterans,” Rice said.

Rice and Sanders have done plenty of talking leading up to the draft, even offering to suit up against one another on the field. Rice says the league won’t let it happen but Sanders says nothing is final until Goodell says so.

“He’s going to be hurting if we suit up,” Rice said.

According to STATS, Sanders had four interceptions in games played against Rice’s teams, going back to 1989. Rice, meanwhile, had 60 catches for 1,051 yards and 11 touchdowns against Sanders’ teams.

Joliet local shares heroin recovery story

The clerk behind the drugstore counter questioned the authenticity of a $100 bill – and it was a counterfeit – but Bill Patrianakos had a ready answer.

His boss had paid cash, he told the clerk about the bill he had forged.

But as Patrianakos hurried through the parking lot to his car, he heard a voice calling after him, “I got you boy! I got you boy!”

Terrified, Patrianakos sped home, chopped his printer into tiny bits and waited for the police to arrive. They didn’t, and Patrianakos continued using heroin.

“I thought I was the exception, not the rule,” Patrianakos said. “I was not the poor minority in the inner city. I was just a normal kid in the suburbs.

Patrianakos, 27, has been clean since 2008. But it’s been a long journey to get there.

Life was fairly simple for Patrianakos – until

his protective parents divorced just as he began a pre-med program at Loyola University in Chicago, giving Patrianakos too much freedom.

A new friend introduced Patrianakos to the party lifestyle. Cocaine, Patrianakos said, produced “the best feeling in the whole world.” Patrianakos soon had a drug problem but not until several hazy years later did he realize it.

“I thought, ‘I can outsmart it. I can just be careful,’ ” Patrianakos said.

“That mentality led me to take more risks and to be a little more dangerous in my decision-making.”

His drug use led to failed classes, a rationalization of having been “good with instruments” and a switch to Columbia University in Chicago to study music.

Patrianakos quit cocaine through sheer will, made acceptable grades and eventually left Columbia.

“Partly because my dad said I’d make no money with a music degree,” Patrianakos said, “and mostly because of drugs.”

22. His friends had graduated but Patrianakos had few college credits. To appease his parents, Patrianakos enrolled in computer programming classes at Joliet

Junior College.

“I had taught myself how to build websites when I was 10 years old, so I thought I’d make a living doing that,” Patrianakos

said. “Really I was just doing drugs all the time.”

Again to appease his parents, Patrianakos went into rehab. He took one look at the crying people in group therapy, decided, “I’m not like those screwed-up guys” and left.

Patrianakos then moved in with an opioid addict who had a crush on him. He and the girl spent all their money on drugs, Patrianakos said, and soon found an eviction notice on their door.

Before they moved out, the girl, Patrianakos said, possibly reacting to his mounting resentment of her, drank a bottle of cough syrup with her oxycontin and went to sleep.

She nearly died, Patrianakos said.

“I thought she made a stupid mistake,” Patrianakos said. “I still thought we had this under control.”

Because the girl was in the hospital, Patrianakos said his father helped him pack. He noticed Patrianakos was unable to stay awake and took him to the hospital, Patrianakos said.

Patrianakos was surprised

to learn he had overdosed.

“I had no tubes. My heart never stopped,” Patrianakos said. “Basically, they put an IV in and I slept it off.”

That’s when Patrianakos met Dr. Gawtham Gutta, who prescribed Suboxone, a medication that helps treat opioid addiction. Patrianakos began that medicine in a 7-day in-patient rehab program.

“I wanted the problem to stop but I didn’t want to stop the drugs,” Patrianakos said. “The same day I got home from the hospital, I went right for the place where I hid my drugs.”

A new routine took place. Stop the Suboxone; binge on drugs; resume the Suboxone. When obtaining pills grew difficult, Patrianakos found a police map online, studied where people were getting arrested for heroin in Chicago, drove up there and asked a man who looked like a “drug guy:” “Do you know where I can get some heroin?”

Medication, Family Guidance Centers help treat opioid addiction

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com For individuals battling opioid addiction, medication is just one of the weapons used to combat it.

Currently, the Federal Drug Administration recognizes three drugs to assist in treatment, said Dr.

Gawtham Gutta, a Joliet internist who treats opioid addiction.

These are methadone (the oldest), Suboxone (a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone) and Vivitrol (naltrexone), an intra-muscular injection.

Methadone, Gutta feels, is the most dangerous because patients still can use

opioids, such as prescription painkillers or heroin, thus increasing the risk of toxicity and overdose.

Suboxone, on the other hand, “can be deleterious to the patient” when used in combination with any other opioid, Gutta said, decreasing the odds the patient will continue to use. One caveat: Starting

Suboxone before the patient begins experiencing withdrawal can worsen the withdrawal symptoms, he added.

Vivitrol blocks the opioid receptors in the brain, although patients can still experience withdrawal and cravings. Also, patients need to be opioid free for at least two weeks

before starting Vivitrol, Gutta said. A relapse also increases the chance of death.

So which to prescribe?

If an individual has no insurance, that choice will be methadone and, due to a federal mandate, that medication can only be dispensed through methadone clinics, Gutta said.

These include the Family Guidance Centers, which have six clinics in Illinois, including one in Joliet, said Ron Vlasaty, executive vice president.

These six clinics are about 80 percent funded by the state and federal government, Vlasaty said.

Soon Patrianakos and his new friend were making a daily trek to the city.

The habit grew expensive, so Patrianakos turned to snorting the heroin and then finally injecting it as he could purchase needles for “two, three bucks” at any drugstore. That’s when Patrianakos began counterfeiting.

A month-long dream

vacation to Greece to visit relatives turned into a nightmare when Patrianakos was arrested at the airport after returning home.

He faced felony charges for the counterfeiting but because he was a first-time offender, Patrianakos was eligible for drug court, which he successfully

completed.

Today, Patrianakos is employed, on the board of directors of Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization, designing websites on the side and weaning off Suboxone. Clean since 2008, Patrianakos rarely refers to his addiction and grows annoyed when others refer to theirs.

“They identify themselves as ‘recovering addicts’ and that’s sad,” Patrianakos said. “It’s not who I am. I’m ‘Bill the Programmer.’ ”

Different treatments available for recovering addicts • TREATMENT Continued from page 27 The different levels of care the Family Guidance Centers provide include intensive outpatient and residential treatments (in conjunction with such places as Stepping Stones Treatment Center in Joliet, Vlasaty said), halfway houses and medication assisted programs, Vlasaty said.

Paul Lauridsen, clinical director of Stepping Stones, said those medications can help give some stability for people in early recovery so they can stay in treatment, especially during the first week of treatment when withdrawal symptoms and cravings are most intense.

“A lot of times people leave because they feel so sick,” Lauridsen said. “We can’t provide those medications but that’s where relationships with Family Guidance and Dr. Gutta are helpful to us. There’s a growing recognition that

those medications are useful in abstinence-based programs such as ours.”

Although the Family Guidance Centers do accept private insurance, they also offer a sliding fee scale for individuals that cannot afford treatment but whose income is above the poverty level.

In essence, Vlasaty said, methadone, an “old drug” that’s been around “50 to 60 years” works by reducing the symptoms of withdrawal and cravings, as methadone is also an opioid.

“We do drug testing on our patients at least once a month to be sure they are clear of all other drugs,” Vlasaty said.

But treating opioid addiction is more than just handing off a prescription to the patient, Gutta said.

Before he prescribes, he learns more about the patient and gets a thorough medical history.

“I look behind the doors,” Gutta said. “I want to know the demons that will ultimately lead the

patient back to usage. I don’t want my patients to be using medication as a crutch.”

Gutta himself prefers Suboxone, as “it’s very clean and works very well.” It’s downfall is that many patients become psychologically dependent on it and dislike giving it up.

“They say, ‘Why do you want me to fail?’ ” Gutta said. “’Life is good; I’m working; and my family and finances are together.’

I’m not asking anyone to fail. It’s one day at a time.

It’s a weaning process.”

Counseling also is very important, Vlasaty agreed, because without it, the addict cannot address the life situations – medical, familial and environmental – that led to the abuse opioids. Many addicts will experience four to five relapses before they successfully recover, Vlasaty said.

“The ultimate goal is to get an individual back to complete functioning,” Vlasaty said, “independent of any medication.”

In most deals, the exact order in which you play the tricks does not matter too much. Occasionally, though, you have to follow a specific sequence, or you can be defeated by accurate defense.

Which applies in today’s deal? South is in three no-trump after East opened one spade. West leads the spade nine and East overtakes with his 10. What should declarer do?

Although East has only 11 high-card points, his hand is worth opening. He has length in the majors, an easy two-heart rebid, and if he finds a fit with his partner, his hand has only seven losers (two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs), which is the normal number for a minimum opening bid with a five-card suit.

South starts with only six top tricks: two spades and four clubs. He might be able to get three more tricks from diamonds, but if he has to lose two diamond tricks, East will establish and run his spade suit to defeat the contract.

Instead, South should impale East on the tines of Morton’s Fork. Since East is marked with the missing aces, declarer should play a club to dummy’s jack, then lead the diamond nine.

If East wins with his ace, South takes two spades, four diamonds and four clubs for an overtrick. Or if East ducks his ace, declarer wins with his queen and leads the heart king from his hand to collect two spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs.

Veterans deserve thanks even when it’s unwelcome Reader wonders where Dear Abby: I just read the letter from “Twice Bitten in Washington,” who had thanked veterans for their service to our country and received several negative responses. I’m a retired vet, dying from Agent Orange poisoning.

I served two tours in Vietnam, and when I returned from Nam, I was called a baby killer, spat upon and refused taxi service because I was in uniform. America has had a change in attitude since the Vietnam War. Today, many folks appreciate what the military is doing. I have been thanked several times while wearing my Vietnam Veterans hat and it makes me feel great, to the point my eyes water.

Tell “Twice Bitten” to continue thanking the military vets. It means a lot, especially to vets like me. Sure beats being called a baby killer. – Vietnam Vet Dear Vietnam Vet: I received many letters like yours from Vietnam vets who were also not thanked for their service when they returned home.

Dear Abby: I would like to offer “Twice” an explanation for the reaction she received. I served two tours in Iraq and lost some good friends. When vets return home from war, home is a scary place. The life we lived and breathed is no longer. After spending so much time fearing the unknown and protecting ourselves physically and emotionally, we can’t stop. Many of us came home feeling guilty that we lived while others died – ashamed that we might not have done enough, that we should have been the one who was laid to rest, that maybe if we had looked harder, fought harder, we wouldn’t have lost a soldier.

When I returned home, I reacted the way “Twice” described. I was resentful that someone would take the

time to honor me, but not the friends I lost. It was a long time before I realized that by honoring me with their sincere thanks, they were honoring every soldier we have ever lost. Exercise is the best feel-good step you can take Dear Doctor K: When I’m tired, the last thing I want to do is exercise. But my wife says that exercising will actually boost my energy. Is she right?

Dear Reader: Listen to your wife. It may sound strange, but in order to get more energy, you have to do the very thing you don’t feel you have enough energy to do – exercise.

There are at least four ways that regular exercise makes you feel more energetic.

For starters, when you exercise, more energy-producing mitochondria form in your muscle cells. Mitochrondria are the cellular powerhouses that convert glucose, fat and oxygen into the substance that cells use for energy.

So, while exercise burns energy, it also enables muscle cells to produce more energy. Any type of regular exercise also creates more tiny blood vessels.

Those vessels bring more oxygen (and glucose and fat) to every one of your cells. Aerobic exercise, which makes you breathe deeply and increases your heart rate, gets the most oxygen circulating.

Exercise also affects levels of hormones and chemical messen-

In large amounts, these stress hormones cause the energy-draining fight-or-flight response. But in the modest amounts induced by exercise, they make you feel energized. Exercise also boosts levels of compounds called endorphins. These are the “feel-good” chemicals that lift your mood. An elevated mood in itself can be an energy booster.

Finally, regular aerobic exercise almost guarantees that you will sleep more soundly – and good sleep is essential for feeling refreshed. Exercise is the only proven way to increase the amount of time you spend in deep sleep, the type that particularly restores energy. The more deep sleep you get, the less likely you are to awaken in the middle of the night, and the more rested you’ll feel the next day.

So, it does sound paradoxical, but

it’s true. Regular exercise can improve your energy even if you don’t feel you have the energy to exercise. But be smart about it. I’m an early riser. I feel a lot more like exercising when I wake up than I do at the end of the day. For many of my friends and patients, it’s just the opposite. They’re late risers who have to be at work by 9 a.m., but don’t feel they’re really awake until later in the morning. (They don’t mention this observation to their boss.) They exercise at the end of the day.

But I hope you won’t think of exercise as a tedious routine. Instead, look at exercise as a surefire energy enhancer you can tap into at will.

You’ve heard repeatedly in this column (and elsewhere) that regular exercise is good for your health. It lowers your risk of many serious diseases.

But, frankly, most of us find it easier to take action to achieve some benefit now, not 30 years from now. Regular exercise will make you feel better now.

Wish him well as you request that he stop calling you for favors. Yes, this may seem harsh, but it can bring the back-and-forth to an end.

Pine is latest incarnation of ‘Jack Ryan’

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now It’s hard to focus on anything but Chris Pine’s striking baby blues, but the “Star Trek” captain proves to be a serviceable action hero as the fourth incarnation of the late Tom Clancy’s famed CIA analyst Jack Ryan.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also stars as a Russian baddie, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” looks great – especially in Imax – and has its share of exciting action scenes, but there’s not much going on below the surface.

Pine follows in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck as Ryan, and this installment serves as his origin story. We first meet him as a student at the London School of Economics on day of the Sept. 11 attacks. Next, he’s a promising young lieutenant in the Marines, forced out by a neardeath helicopter crash.

After rehab, where he meets longtime flame Cathy (Keira Knightley, with not much to do but adopting an American accent), Jack joins the CIA, working undercover as a compliance officer at a big-time Wall Street financial house. He soon uncovers a Russian terrorist plot to cripple the U.S. economy and blow up Wall Street.

Chris Pine stars in the film “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.” from New York to Moscow and back again, as Jack, aided in his quest by his wise old CIA boss played by a grumbly-voiced Kevin Costner, is charged with saving the world and his girlfriend from harm.

What transpires is stuff you’ve seen before in this franchise and others of its ilk.

Veteran scribe David Koepp (“Angels and Demons”) and newcomer Adam Cozad

are the first to write a Jack Ryan screenplay not based on a Clancy novel. That might be why their reboot lacks any depth whenever the gunfire, car chases and explosions subside. The characters, too, are all cookie-cutter: Costner’s the “mentor;” Knightley’s the “girl in peril;” there’s a few ill-fated thugs, a Russian terrorist (Alec Utgoff) and the icy Kremlin official (former ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov).

It’s a credit, however, to Pine and Branagh for making the inferior material better than it should be. Pine, the kind of guy for whom tailored suits were invented, brings a lot of charisma to the role (“Like a Boy Scout on a field trip,” Costner’s character teases.)

Branagh (the actor) makes Russian oligarch Viktor Cheverin a formidable villain.

moves the action along at a brisk pace (there’s a ticking bomb, after all!) delivering a taut film that isn’t afraid of its own shadow.

• “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and intense action and brief strong language. The cast includes Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Grade: B.
