PLAINFIELD – A Joliet man died Sunday when his car veered off Interstate 55 and flipped over.

Steve R. McMullan, 34, was

driving southbound about 7:49 p.m. when his 2011 Honda Accord left the roadway just north of Lockport Street, according to reports.

“It struck the face of the guardrail, went into a ditch and rolled over,” State Police

Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said.

“The vehicle struck a fence and tree before it crossed over the frontage road and rolled back onto its wheels in the ditch.”

McMullan was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 p.m., according to the Will County

Two killed, including store employee, in attempted robbery in Joliet

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two men are dead after an attempted robbery Monday afternoon at a convenience store in Joliet.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said the holdup occurred about 3:15 p.m. at Gardner Food Mart, 1000 Gardner St., near Nowell Park.

“Two suspects came up on foot and walked in, covering their faces with their hoodies.

One of them was armed and engaged the proprietor behind

the counter who drew his own weapon,” Benton said.

The two men exchanged gunfire and the employee was killed at the scene, Benton said. Customers were in the store at the time.

The wounded robber was able to flee and was later dropped off by someone at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where he died, Benton said.

Authorities did not immediately release Monday the names of either of the deceased.

The second robber fled the scene and was being sought by police Monday night. He was described as a black man around 5-foot 9-inches tall with a light complexion. He was wearing a gray hoodie.

Benton said police were considering Monday night whether the suspects have been involved in other recent robberies.

ROMEOVILLE – Village trustees are scheduled to vote Wednesday on a five-year, $500,000 agreement giving Naperville-based Edward Hospital naming rights to the Romeoville Athletic and Events Center.

The agreement includes reserving about 1,660 square feet of space in the center for the hospital to use as a physical therapy center. The space would be free to the hospital in the first year. Over the next four years, the space would be rented out at $11 per square foot.

The agreement would rename the facility “Edward Hospital Athletic & Event Center.” The hospital would become the “official sponsor of the center” and the Edward Hospital logo would appear one of the portable basketball courts.

In return, the village will receive five installments of $100,000 for the next five years.

JTHS seeks community’s votes for national contest

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School has entered a $200,000 national education contest hoping for a chance at one of the 13 prizes to recognize the best in K-12 innovation.

In addition to completing an online application for the fourth annual Follett Challenge, teachers from JTHS also submitted a short video to promote its program, which teaches students the 21st century skills they need to be prepared for life, according to a news release from JTHS. Ten of the prizes, valued at $8,000 each, to be given away are from the “People’s Choice” category and will solely be based on how many votes applicants have received for their videos from the public.

Video voting begins Jan. 19.

JTHS’s video will be posted at

www.FollettChallenge.com under the “View Entries” tab.

Users can cast one vote per day through Jan. 30.

Silver Cross raises $30,000 for United Way

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital raised more than $30,000 to help the annual United Way of Will County Campaign, which kicked off in December.

The hospital’s theme for the campaign this year was “Live United.” Hospital employees were asked to participate in the Campaign by making a pledge through a payroll-deduction program, Christmas Tree raffle and split the-pot-raffle, according to a news release from Silver Cross.

In addition, a new Teddy Bear collection was held where hospital employees donated more than 100 teddy bears to support the children involved in the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Volunteers serve community on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Day On service project locations

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Had Lonnell Evans taken Monday off, he would stayed home either watching TV or catching up on lost sleep.

Instead, the Joliet West High School senior was out at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, removing wreaths from hundreds of graves of the military men and women buried there.

“I’m glad I’m out here. I feel like I am making a difference in the community,” Evans said as he gathered wreaths.

The wreath gathering was one of many service projects local students participated in on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, making it a “day on” rather than a “day off.”

A series of service projects in the Joliet area were hosted Monday by the Community Services Council of Will County. The 26th anniversary of the “Day On, Not a Day Off,” event represented a day of service, inviting hundreds of volunteers to clean, fix and assist local agencies.

Nonprofit organizations were asked to submit projects to the staff of United Way of Will County, who compiled them and sent them to program staff.

Besides the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, students – along with other volunteers ranging from children to senior citizens – aided Catholic Charities Daybreak Center, Center for Disability Services, MorningStar Mission and Will County Forest Preserve.

He said more than 620 volunteers participated in the day of service, 400 of them Joliet West and Central high school students. Between 25 and 30 volunteers were gradeschool children, he said.

“We’re extremely proud of the Joliet community. They answered a call for service and we joined other cities who made [Martin Luther King Jr.’s] vision come alive by

making it a day on and not a day off,” he said.

Participating in the “Day On” event is a good opportunity for students, said Linda Bowers, Joliet Central High School teacher.

“For the kids to get up early on their day off is amazing,” Bowers said. “You see the camaraderie. Everyone is in a good mood. It’s interesting to see.”

Before the volunteers headed out Monday morning, Evans rallied the crowd in the Joliet West High School cafeteria by yelling “Make it a day on!” while the crowd yelled back “Not a day off!”

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, who visited Joliet West High School on Monday morning, said each year the number of event volunteers increases. The event represents the work and memory of Martin Luther King Jr. “He worked to help others.

He sacrificed his time to help others,” Walsh said.

Raceway prepares for snocross tourney

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Giant snow-makers have billowed mounds of crystallized water onto the Route 66 Raceway the past two weeks to prepare for the Joliet area’s first major snocross tournament.

The nationally televised event, in Joliet from Feb. 20 to 21, will represent a first for the International Series of Champions, a leading winter motorsports authority. This will be the first snocross tournament south of Lake Geneva, raceway Operations Manager Shayn McMartin said.

Portions of the drag strip look like slick, elevated snow dunes after super-powered snow-makers sucked in cold water and ejected snow onto the raceway.

“It’s new territory for us,” McMartin said, estimating labor costs to be about $100,000.

Man-made snow

A lack of consistent snow this winter hasn’t stopped raceway officials from preparing the drag strip by manufacturing their own snow with pond water west of the track.

After the pond’s ice cover was cut with a chainsaw, water from the pond was suctioned through large pipes to the fans, designed to spray water in front of large, high-speed snow-makers with fans.

The fans, on a cold day, deliver enough wind chill to turn the water into snow. But the water must come in at 200 to 300 pounds per square inch, requiring a lot of power.

The weather can’t be too cold or the water will freeze in the pipes and snow-makers’ muzzles. It also can’t be too warm, or the raceway won’t get the kind of snow that snocross organizers want, McMartin said.

“Man-made snow is more compact,” he said. “They’re more like small ice pellets. It’s

denser snow that’s more consistent. [The racers] like it.”

So they came together to find ways to optimize the facilities in the winter.

McMartin is from northern Wisconsin, where he developed an interest in snocross.

He got in contact with the International Series of Champions, which was enthusiastic about bringing snocross to Joliet.

39 apply for vacant Plainfield school board seat

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Almost 40 people have applied for a single open seat on the Plainfield School District 202 Board.

According to information requested from the school district, 39 applicants are vying for the unexpired two-year seat on the board after William Dargan resigned mid-term last month.

“I think everybody is surprised this many people applied,” Board President Roger Bonuchi said. “When I was appointed to the board in 2005, there were only 11 applicants.”

Bonuchi noted that out of the 39 applicants, many just provided their name or basic information.

“On that list there were

some serious candidates, but many of the others gave us nothing,” he said.

Bonuchi said he expects board members to agree on which candidates from the 39 they want to interview by Wednesday. They will interview candidates Friday and be ready to appoint a new board member by the regular board meeting next Monday.

Animal rescue faced with eviction eyes locations

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Donna Hawk’s world has turned upside-down since her Joliet Township no-kill animal rescue operation received an eviction notice before Christmas.

“A month ago, I said, ‘We’re done,’ ” said Hawk, executive director for Cache Creek Animal Rescue.

Thanks to the publicity received since, the rescue is down

to about 60 adoptable dogs – an all-time low compared to the usual 150.

“I can’t even tell you how many we adopted out this weekend,” she said Monday.

Based in downstate Anna, Cache Creek has a shelter facility at 20654 Burl Court in Joliet Township. The nonprofit, nokill shelter takes in dogs and cats from kill shelters across the state.

Hawk’s landlord had wanted the shelter out by Jan. 10,

but has since extended the deadline to Sunday, Hawk said, thanks to a pro-bono attorney who has negotiated with the landlord.

In the meantime, Hawk has sought a new place, narrowing her choices down to two locations: a place in Plainfield off Route 59 and another in New Lenox near Spencer and Cedar roads.

Hawk said she hopes to have a place secured by the end of the week, adding that “none of

this” was possible without the hundreds of generous people who donated through the shelter’s GoFundMe site. The site was launched days after Hawk received the eviction letter, and has since accumulated more than $80,000.

Until a location is secured, Hawk said the shelter is trying to adopt out as many pets as possible. It has cut adoption fees in half, she said.

Part of the $80,000 raised is going toward much-needed

repair work at Hawk’s downstate location, which is prone to flooding. Hawk also has put money toward repair work for the transport van that moves pets from southern Illinois to Joliet.

The rescue shelter plans to move as soon as it secures a lease, she said. Before the shelter can adopt out animals at the new location, the Illinois Department of Agriculture will have to inspect and sign-off on the property.

Plainfield board has restored confidence in park district

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Township trustees have rescinded a vote of no confidence they issued against the Plainfield Park District board almost a year ago.

The unanimous vote was issued during a board meeting last Wednesday, revers-

ing a stance trustees took in February 2014 to criticize the Plainfield Township Park District board.

“We rescinded that mostly around the fact that things have stabilized at the park district,” Township Supervisor Tony Fremarek said.

Township leadership issued the no confidence vote in the Park Board when it

was controlled by a majority consisting of commissioners Peter Hurtado, Janet Silosky and Peter Steinys.

That group made several decisions that drew the public’s ire after forming in May 2013, including hiring a Plainfield village trustee with no parks experience as the district’s executive director.

However, since the initial

vote of no confidence, the park district has experienced a shift of power. First, Silosky joined commissioners Mary Kay Ludemann and Larry Newton to form a new majority backed by a public advocacy group calling itself “Park Truth.”

The district hired a new, experienced executive director, and a new law that cre-

ated two new commissioner positions on the Park Board further diluted Hurtado’s and Steinys’ voices.

“In fairness to that board, instead of saying nothing, we made it a point of recognizing things are fine again,” Fremarek said.

Park Board President Ludemann said she appreciated the township’s reversal.

Murphy USA gas coming to Joliet THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – A new gas brand is coming to Joliet if the City Council approves a subdivision plat on the agenda Tuesday.

Murphy USA wants to put a gas station at the southwest corner of Route 59 and Theodore Street, according to a council memo on the meeting agenda. The site is an outlot in the Wal-Mart shopping center.

CREST HILL – The death of a woman whose body was found Friday at an outdoor storage facility will be listed as “suspicious” until toxicology tests are completed.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Monday there were no obvious signs of foul play and an autopsy showed hypothermia because of cold exposure may have contributed to Tiana M. Wallace’s death.

Wallace’s body was found Friday morning within the complex of U-Store-It, 1906 Plainfield Road. Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said Monday that Wallace, 30, was renting a unit there until last month.

“We learned she was [telling others] her stuff was still in there,” Wilkerson said.

“Management said she didn’t

have access to the facility anymore, so someone had to have let her in.”

Wilkerson said Monday the investigation will remain open until the coroner’s reports are completed.

Wallace used a wheelchair, according to reports. Court records show she pleaded guilty to endangering the life or health of a child after an April 2010 fire that killed her 4-yearold son.

According to Herald-News reports, Omariya Dishman was left alone for at least 30 minutes before a fire started in Wallace’s first-floor apartment in the Evergreen Terrace housing project. Fire investigators determined the fire started accidentally, but were unable to pinpoint the cause.

Wallace spent two months in jail and received three years probation, according to court records.

Downtown dead zone MLK Jr. holiday shows area depends on government business

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday offered a glimpse at how much downtown Joliet businesses depend on the Will County Courthouse and government offices.

“I literally came in today knowing there would be no business, but I would have an opportunity to take down the Christmas tree,” said Gina Duffy, who used Monday to change the decor at Jitters, her Chicago Street coffeehouse and restaurant.

Duffy said she likes being downtown, but knows what it means when county and state government office workers get a holiday.

“When they’re closed, there is nothing down here,” she said.

Some restaurants close when government offices do.

Three business people downtown Monday for a project at Joliet Central High School passed two closed restaurants and asked where they might find lunch.

“I can’t see why anyone would open on a day like this,” said one, who declined to give his name. “Obviously, as you can see, there’s nobody on the streets.”

The streets were not completely empty: The lunch trio found a meal at Route 66 Diner on Clinton Street.

Route 66 Diner owner John Georgouses said business typically drops at least 60 percent on government holidays.

“There are people who come downtown to the casino,” Georgouses said. “But when they’re in the casino, they don’t want to come out.”

One government building was open – the Joliet Public Library across the street from

the Route 66 Diner. Library employee Benjamin Klahn was one of a few people eating lunch at the diner counter.

“Kids are off school. People are off work,” Klahn said as he talked about why the library stayed open. “We don’t want to deprive them of their chance to use the Internet and things like that.”

Klahn said the diner is a popular spot for library employees.

Will County officials are planning a new courthouse.

Keeping it downtown is a priority for Joliet officials and business leaders. The city also is in the middle of a plan being created in part to put more feet on downtown streets.

More retail would help, Duffy said.

“We need more specialty shops where people would browse through the stores,” she said.

Firefighter James Allen to be memorialized by state

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – At just 24, volunteer Morris fireman James Allen lost his life in a residential fire because of a backdraft.

Nearly 30 years later, Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes is working toward recognizing Allen by having a portion of Route 47 through Morris named in his honor.

The section of highway that goes over the CSX railway between Benton and High streets will be named after Allen.

“I brought it up to his parents last May and said something needs to be done, but I wasn’t going to do it without the blessing of his mom and dad,” Steffes said. “It’s the right thing to do, no ifs, ands or buts about it.”

Allen is the son of Ken Allen of Coal City and Judy Steffes of Sheldon. He was married to his wife Donna and had a son, Kenneth James Allen, when he was killed in the fire.

Steffes approached state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, with the memorial idea and Anthony jumped on board to help.

Anthony has taken the resolution to the Illinois House in Springfield, where it has had its first reading. He said it will have a second reading and then will be voted on.

Once the resolution is passed in the House, it will move to the Senate.

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said she has talked

to Anthony about the memorial and will pick it up in the Senate.

“I want to do anything I can to honor the first responders who are there to protect us,” Rezin said.

Steffes said Allen went into a basement fire March 18, 1985, with two other firefighters.

After a backdraft, only two of the firefighters followed their line out.

“He gave his life doing what my guys and girls in the department do every day,” Steffes said.

Steffes said he considered Interstate 80 for the memorial naming, but dismissed it because people driving by wouldn’t know who Allen was, or the significance behind it.

“It needs to be in town, where his friends who knew him can see it,” Steffes said. “I thought the portion between Benton Street and High Street was a good place because it’s visible.”

Steffes said there is a statue in Allen’s honor at Chapin Park, but he believes renaming this particular section of Route 47 the Firefighter James Allen Memorial Highway will help close a chapter and properly memorialize him.

JJC nursing lab named for Jeanette Wirt

JOLIET – The Nursing and Allied Health Department’s nursing lab at Joliet Junior College has been dedicated to the late Jeanette Wirt.

JJC welcomed Leon Wirt, Jeanette’s husband, to campus Jan. 14 to celebrate the dedication.

Because of the excellent nursing care Mrs. Wirt experienced throughout her life, she wanted to make a difference in the lives of student nurses, according to a news release from the college.

She gave JJC an endowment of $268,000 – the biggest endowment the Nursing and Allied Health Department has ever received – which will be used for scholarships beginning this year. JJC will grant a total of $11,000 for this scholarship to as many as

OBITUARIES HELEN M. BRANDOLINO Helen Mary Brandolino, nee Liberatore, age 83, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice with family by her side.

Survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Sandro “Sandy” Brandolino; her children, David Brandolino, Toni Ann Brandolino, Marianne Brandolino, Diane Brandolino (Jeff Luchowski) and Jackie (John) Costenaro; grandchildren, Bobby (Karole) Brandolino, Jimmy (Lauren) McFarland, Katie (Keith) Anderson, Ellen (fiance Tim Roesel) Fleming and Emily Fleming; great-grandchildren, Gianni and Eliana Brandolino, Quinn McFarland, Cole and Will Anderson and Noah Roesel; sisterin-law, Dennie Liberatore; a niece, Nan (Jack) Ranzini; and many friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Concetta (DiPietrantonio) Liberatore; and brother, John (Dennie) Liberatore.

Helen attended St. Mary Carmelite Grade School and is a 1949 graduate of St. Francis Academy in Joliet. She was a member of the Young People’s Club and Antonian’s Club at St. Anthony’s Parish, where she and her husband were married. Helen enjoyed keeping up with her classmates at reunions and monthly club meetings and has fond memories of writing for the school newspaper, where she was the fastest typist on the staff and received several awards for her work.

Helen was also a member of the Glee Club and acted in school plays, including starring in “I Remember Mama!”

Helen is an accomplished pianist. She began private studies at age seven at the Joliet Conservatory of Music, and continued her studies at Joliet Junior College where she and her husband were the first music major graduates.

Helen went on to study classical piano at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She taught private music lessons at the Joliet Conservatory of Music as well as in Mount Clemons, Michigan. Helen continued teaching music as well as managing the bookkeeping and accounting for her and husband’s business, Brandolino West Side Music Center, which they owned for nearly 40 years.

Helen loved to read, work crossword puzzles, cook and play the piano for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watch as they danced around her.

The family would like to thank Sunny Hill Nursing Home and the staff at Joliet Area Community Hospice for

their care and support. A special thank you to Margie Stanfel for her love and devotion.

Funeral service for Helen Brandolino will be held Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, Joliet. The family will hold a private visitation.

Born: Feb. 21, 1945; in Chicago, IL Died: Jan. 17, 2015; in Joliet, IL James Edward “Jim” Burns, 69, a Naperville, IL resident for thirty years, formerly of Chicago and Evergreen Park, IL, died Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home after a long, courageous battle with various health conditions. Jim was born February 21, 1945, in Chicago.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Mary Ann (nee Wallace) Burns; and son, Edward (Christina) Burns; sisters, Julianne (Peter) McShea, Margaret (Edward) Hoff; and brother and sisters-in-law, Margaret Harnett, Ellen (Redmond) Ward, Daniel (Margaret) Wallace, James (Shirley) Wallace; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Rosella (nee Jarvis) Burns; and his beloved golden retrievers Kerry and Kelly.

Jim grew up in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, attended Mendel Catholic High School and earned his degree in political science at DePaul University in 1968, where he was president of the Alpha Chi Fraternity. He was an educator, master craftsman, loyal employee and family man.

Jim taught in the Chicago Public Schools and worked as a plumber for John J. Burns & Son Plumbing. He retired from the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) after 31 years of service.

Jim truly enjoyed spending time with his workshop of tools. He was a life-long craftsman, especially enjoying wood working. Jim was the family’s Mr. Fix-It, always willing to lend a hand and expertise.

As a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Naperville, Jim volunteered at Hesed House and taught religious education. He took great pride in providing for his family, and had a great sense of humor. In retirement, he enjoyed the therapy pool at Edward Health &Fitness where he conversed with other members.

The family would like to acknowledge the doctors and staff at Edward Hospital who treated Jim for his various illnesses over the past 20 years and to the many caregivers who helped over the last three years, especially Greg Nimietz.

A special thanks to the medical director, doctors, nurses, CNAs and staff at Joliet Area Community Hospice for the warmth and compassion they showed Jim in his final months.

Elsie Mae Hanna “Toots” (nee Baltz), age 88, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Born October 23, 1926, in Troy Township, she was a lifetime Joliet area resident.

Preceded in death by her husband, Mark (1990); her parents, John L. and Irene (nee Garlic) Baltz; her stepmother, Elsie Page Baltz; and two brothers, Harlow and Donald Baltz.

Beloved mother of Marlene (William) Greiner; loving grandmother of Stacy Connelly and Lisa (Dr. Brian) Winkleman; proud great-grandmother of Quinn and Campbell Connelly; Hanna and A.J. Winkleman; dear sister of Lt. Col. Katherine Hayes; aunt to several nieces and nephews.

ANN I. HONIOTES Ann I. Honiotes (nee Kochalka) Anna “Ann” I. Honiotes, age 92, died peacefully at Our Lady of Angels in Joliet under the watchful eye of their caring staff, especially her special caregiver Ashley, and Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Born in Joliet on May 15, 1922, in the home of her parents, Joseph and Mary Kochalka above their neighborhood grocery store on Garnsey Avenue.

She met the love of her life, Andrew J. Honiotes at the St. Thaddeus Church bazaar when she was 16 years old.

Four years later in July 1942 they eloped and were married by an army chaplain at Chanute Field in Rantoul, IL. Although her parents were immigrants from Slovakia and his from Greece, they proved that true love would overcome any cultural boundaries like the movie script from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Andy died in 2003 just shy of their 61st wedding anniversary. She shared stories of playing barefoot in the snow as a child, learning to drive in her father’s grocery delivery truck at age 14, and riding her bicycle to the far west side of Joliet to see Andy when they were

dating because “he and his brothers worked 16 hours a day” on the Honiotes family truck farm at Troy Rd and Midland Avenue. Weeks after they were married Andy went overseas with the U.S. Army Air Corps.

She attended dressmaking school by train in Chicago until Andy returned from Europe nearly 3 years later at the end of the war in 1945. Those skills she learned would be perfected during her lifetime making many of her own clothes, all the draperies in their home, Halloween costumes and countless alterations for family and friends. Her greatest joy was cooking and baking for her family and friends.

Her signature treat was the traditional Slovak “Rozki” cookies she learned to make from her mother. We estimate she may have made nearly a million of them in her lifetime.

She was a lifetime member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church Altar and Rosary Society, Homemakers, and a lifetime member of the PTA. She was an active member of the “Lady Lions” and later in life she became a full member of the Joliet Noon Lions Club and was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones award for her service following in the footsteps of her late husband Andy.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Andy; her infant son, Joseph; her parents, and siblings, Joseph, Mary (Jenco), Margaret (DeSalvo), Louis, Benedict, Elizabeth(Capista) and Francis “Kelly” Kochalka.

She is survived by her three sons, John Jos. (Bobbi), Andy Jr. (Elaine) and Bill (Mary) Honiotes; grandchildren, Amy, Melissa, Amanda, and Andy Honiotes; Jason (Ting), Tyler, and Sydney Rice; three great-grandchildren, Allison, Sarah, and Isabella; and countless cousins, nieces and nephews.

Daniel J. Lambert, age 87, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2015, after a brief illness.

Dan was born January 3, 1928, in Lockport, IL, the son of Daniel and Alvina (Rodeghero) Lambert. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Helen (n e Vogrin). Family was everything to Dan. He was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by six children, Patricia (Todd) Hogan, Daniel (Debra) Lambert, Peggy (Patrick Monshau) Velemir, James (Paula) Lambert, Terence Lambert and Timothy (Teri) Lambert; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Dwelle, Laura (Terry) Lewis, Stephanie (Patrick) Forster, Kyle Hogan, Kathryn (Aaron Bloomfield) Lambert, Daniel (Kelley) Lambert, Jamie (Michael) Stevenson, Melissa Lambert, Michael Lambert, Jessica Velemir, Martin Velemir, Jacey Lambert and Luke Lambert; and 10 great-grandchildren. Lillie M. Minarich (nee Salato), age 100 years, passed away Sunday January 18, 2015, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County. Born in Hiteman, Iowa on September 20, 1914, and living in Joliet most of her life.

As a young lady, she was a member of the West Park Ladies Baseball Team. Years ago, she worked at the Navy Yards in Rockdale. Member of the Paulites of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Lillie enjoyed crocheting, baking and working in her rose garden at home. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Peter A. Minarich (1997); her parents, Peter and Antonia (nee Marca) Salato; two brothers, Felix and Elmer Salato; and four sisters, Margaret Campagna, Helen Bajt, Louise Menegan and Mary Jane Berg.

Survived by her daughter, Anna Mae (Wayne) Gustafson; and her son, Robert (Marlene) Minarich; seven grandchildren, Victoria (Greg) Menozzi, Mark (Donna) Gustafson, Scott (Amy) Gustafson, Kevin (Diana) Gustafson, Duane (MaryJo) Minarich, Debbie (Rich) King and Diane (Randy) Christenson; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Celia Kren (nee Starcevich), 89, most recently of Lisle, passed away January 18, 2015, at Central DuPage Hospital.

Survived by her son, Barry (Diane); daughter and best friend, Sue (Kelley Neal); in-laws, Lillian Starcevich, JoAnne Starcevich, Rome Kren, Marge Kren and Sally Kren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded by her parents, John and Anne (nee Putrich); brothers, Tony and George; sister, Catherine Senffner; son, Bruce; as well as former husband, Bernard and various other relatives.

Special to Celia were her three grandchildren, Tracey (Matthew) Kelly, Amy (Trevor) Sula, and Nate (Jillian) Kren; and great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Tanner, Jonah, McKinley and Brady.

Celia served in U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII and was employed by Marshall Field’s in Joliet for 22 years.

She was a die-hard Cubs fan and treasured her books, flowers and loved old movies. The family would like to thank home health nurse, Laurie, for her care, compassion and dedication. “Her” feline companion, Jordan, will miss her greatly.

He was employed at Blockson Chemical and at Mechling Barge Line as a traffic manager. He owned and operated Dan Lambert Amoco from 1957 until his retirement in 1999. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Lewis University in 1970. Dan loved baseball and coached young players for over 30 years at Marycrest, St. Joe’s Park, St. Paul the Apostle School, Goltz Park, Joliet Collegiate team and the University of St. Francis.

Rauner signs order aimed at helping veterans, minorities

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner signed an executive order Monday he said is a first step toward reducing disproportionately high unemployment rates among Illinois minorities and veterans.

The order requires labor groups, contractors and subcontractors who work with the state to submit a report within the next 30 days with the number of minorities and veterans participating in training or apprenticeship programs, which often are a pathway to full-time jobs.

The Winnetka Republican also ordered the state’s personnel agency to review state law on hiring and contracting preferences for veterans and to prepare a report on the ability of minorityand veteran-owned businesses to obtain state contracts.

Rauner said the reviews will help his administration determine what future actions may be needed to address unemployment rates he described as “way too high.”

New security steps to delay state’s income tax returns

SPRINGFIELD – New security measures to deter identity theft and fraud will delay Illinois income tax returns this year, Illinois Department of Revenue officials said.

The agency won’t say what those security measures are, but they could delay returns a week or longer, rather than days, spokesman Terry Horstman told the State Journal-Register.

He said both paper and electronic filings will be affected, although electronic filings – the vast majority of the 6 million returns filed last year – still will be quicker.

Chicagoan charged in hit-and-run that killed 2 pedestrians

CHICAGO – Chicago police have arrested a 24-year-old Chicago man in a hit-and-run crash that killed two men as they crossed the street on the city’s Northwest Side.

In a news release, the police department said Jose Estrada has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated drunken driving resulting in death and two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence.

Authorities allege Estrada was speeding Saturday shortly after 10 p.m. when the vehicle struck the men. They said he allegedly drove away and crashed into parked cars three blocks away.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the two men as Ramon Cruz, 35, and Pablo Vega, 56.

The county state’s attorney said a judge set Estrada’s bond at $500,000 during a hearing Monday.

Suspected fraud can be checked against a multistate database used to track criminals.

Horstman said most criminal tax filings come from another state.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office told the newspaper there were 408 fraud complaints last year involving tax returns.

New rules for Illinois to get out-of-state sales taxes

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois’ Department of Revenue has new rules this year to target the collection of sales taxes from out-of-state businesses.

The new rules that took effect Jan. 1 expand the definition of out-of-state retailers that must register in Illinois and collect sales taxes, according to The State Journal-Register.

State lawmakers revised the rules last year after the Illinois

Supreme Court ruled that previous rules singled out online sellers, violating federal laws.

The new rules dropped the word “Internet” and now cover catalog, mail-order and similar retailers along with online sellers. Companies are covered if they have sales of $10,000 or more in the prior year.

Out-of-state sellers have a month to adjust to the new rules.

Illinois’ brick-and-mortar businesses say not collecting the taxes gives out-of-state retailers an advantage.

Chicago boy to sit with Michelle Obama at State of Union

CHICAGO – A 13-year-old Chicago boy will be seated in first lady Michelle Obama’s box at the State of the Union.

The White House said Malik Bryant sent a letter to Santa over the holidays but didn’t ask for presents. Instead, the boy wrote: “All I ask for is for safety.” A nonprofit group sent the letter to the White House, and President Barack Obama wrote back to Malik saying, “security is a priority for me in everything I do as president.”

Malik will join more than 20 other guests in Michelle Obama’s seats for the Tuesday night address.

Malik is a seventh-grader who lives with his mother and two sisters on Chicago’s South Side.

Yemen troops battle Shiite rebels for nation’s capital

By AHMED AL-HAJ The Associated Press SANAA, Yemen – Yemen’s U.S.-backed leadership came under serious threat Monday as government troops clashed with Shiite rebels near the presidential palace and a key military base in what one official called “a step toward a coup.”

The militants seized control of state media in fierce fighting that marked the biggest challenge yet to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi by the rebels, known as Houthis, who swept down from their northern strongholds last year and captured the capital in September.

The violence threatened to undermine efforts by the U.S. and its allies to battle al-Qaida’s Yemeni affiliate, which claimed responsibility for the attack on a Paris satirical magazine this month and which Washington long has viewed as the global network’s most dangerous branch.

The Houthis and forces loyal to Hadi have been in

a tense standoff for months, and the two sides traded blame for the outbreak of violence Monday. Witnesses said heavy machine gun fire could be heard as artillery shells struck around the presidential palace. Civilians fled as columns of black smoke rose over the palace and sirens wailed throughout the city.

Hadi, whose government has ceded control over nearly the entire capital, doesn’t live at the palace. Extra soldiers and tanks deployed around his private residence nearby.

As fighting escalated Monday, the convoys of Yemen’s prime minister and a top official affiliated with the Houthis came under fire, and rebel fighters took over Yemen state TV and its official SABA news agency, Information Minister Nadia Sakkaf said.

“This is a step toward a coup, and it is targeting the state’s legitimacy,” Sakkaf told The Associated Press.

Cease-fire negotiations continued throughout the day by a presidential committee that included the inte-

rior and defense ministers, a presidential aide and a tribal sheik close to the Houthis. By the end of the day, a tenuous truce appeared to be holding.

The cease-fire announcement came after witnesses said the rebels seized control of strategic hills overlooking both the palace and the military camp south of it. There was no government confirmation of the loss of territory.

At least nine people were killed in the fighting and 67 were injured, Yemen’s deputy health minister, Nasser Baoum, told the AP. Yemen’s Western and international allies, including the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, called for steps to implement and consolidate the cease-fire, expressing their support for Hadi.

“We reject the use of violence by those who seek to overturn Yemen’s political transition for their own interests, and fully support President Hadi as the legitimately-mandated president,” a statement on the U.S. Embassy website said.

Most say common ground will be hard to find in Springfield A solid majority of Illinoisans wants newly inaugurated Gov. Bruce Rauner to find common ground with the Democratic legislative majority rather than be confrontational, a new poll finds. However, most aren’t confident the state’s leaders can avoid gridlock, and a majority believes the Democrats will be to blame.

“Do you think Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner should try to solve the state’s problems by working to find common ground with the Democratic-controlled Legislature, or should he take a more confrontational approach with the Democrats in trying to solve this state’s many problems?” 1,026 registered voters were asked Jan. 15 by We Ask America.

An overwhelming 67 percent said they want Rauner to find common ground, while 22 percent said he should take a more confrontational approach. Another 6 percent said he should do both, and 5 percent were unsure.

An almost unanimous 84 percent of Democrats and a strong 63 percent of independents wanted him to find common ground, while 76 percent of African-Americans and 67 percent of whites said the same.

Every demographic favored the common-ground approach, although only a 49 percent plurality of Republicans did so, as opposed to 36 percent who wanted a more confrontational approach from the newly inaugurated GOP governor.

Next question: “Now we would like to know how confident you are that Gov. Rauner can avoid gridlock with the Democratic controlled House and Senate.”

Considering Illinois’ sorry history and the gridlock caused by divided government in our nation’s capital, just 31 percent of Illinoisans were confident that gridlock cold be avoided, while 54 percent said they were not confident. The most “confident” group was Republicans, but even they were outnumbered 46-39 by Republicans who weren’t confident.

I think you might get a higher confidence level for compromise at the Statehouse, particularly among folks who have experienced progress under divided government. So far, Springfield has a much better track record than Washington, D.C. “Finally, if Illinois government gets mired in gridlock, who do you think will likely be the cause of the gridlock?” the pollster asked. A 52 percent majority pointed their collective finger at the Dem-

More specifically, 30 percent said they thought House Speaker Michael Madigan would be to blame, 3 percent said Senate President John Cullerton likely would be the problem, and 19 percent said it would be Madigan and Cullerton together.

Even a 42 percent plurality of Democrats said their own party leaders would be to blame if the state crashes into the gridlock wall. The poll had a margin of error of +/-3 percent.

Meanwhile, a poll Jan. 14 by We Ask America had Rauner’s approval rating at 52 percent, with just 23 percent disapproving. Madigan’s numbers were almost the exact reverse, with 26 percent approving versus 55 percent disapproving.

That’s not the only Democratic deficit.

The Democratic legislative leaders spent down their reserves during last year’s campaign and ended 2014 with a combined total of $2.8 million in their respective campaign bank accounts.

Normally, that wouldn’t be too bad.

But not after Rauner dumped $20 million into his campaign coffers. That gives him an advantage of better than 7-1.

Rauner has said he will use the money to communicate his message with voters and support his legislative allies. But lots of Springfield folks wonder who’s going to get whacked by that cash mountain.

And for the first time in memory, the state GOP ended a year with more than twice as much cash on hand than Madigan’s Democrats: $566,000 for the ILGOP and $215,000 for DPI – an advantage mostly from contributions by Rauner himself.

If you were wondering why people like me believe Madigan will hold his fire for quite a while, just look at the results from the above two polls and that cash disadvantage. Madigan knows he and his party will be the fall guy in any war. Rauner will have to take the first shot – and maybe the second and third. And Madigan better go out and raise more money.

A very special “thank you” goes to Lockport’s Jewel-Osco, and the area people who donated cash to the “Turkey and Ham Bucks “campaign.

Local Jewel customers donated cash, which was used to buy dinners for Will County veterans and their families.

Jewel-Osco helped raise more than $2,000 in cash donations at their store’s “Turkey Bucks” event, which ended Nov. 21. These proceeds were used to buy Thanksgiving dinners from their deli that the VFW distributed to local veterans and their families.

The “Turkey Bucks” bought 23 deluxe dinners consisting of frozen, fully cooked turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, cranberries, bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, pumpkin pie, rolls and oranges. Also, 20 dinners consisting of a turkey breast, potatoes, cranberries, oranges and rolls were given to single veterans. The dinners were distributed through the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission at 120 N. Scott St., Joliet, by staff members

and the Lockport and Plainfield VFW volunteers.

Several dinners were delivered to the veterans’ homes. Store manager Joe Tiangco and Front End Manager Nancy Vranich of Jewel-Osco organized the donations at the store checkouts, with VFW members assisting in the collections at the entrances.

A similar campaign, “Ham Bucks,” was held in December following the Turkey Bucks Campaign at the Lockport Jewel-Osco and provided ham dinners to the veterans for Christmas. Over $2,000 was donated to buy ham dinners for distribution to area veterans. Lockport VFW Post 5788 coordinated the distribution of these dinners with the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission.

Local veterans who qualify for assistance in Will County were given some extra Christmas cheer in the form of the ham dinners.

Again, thank you to Jewel-Osco employees and all who donated their cash to brighten the holidays for our deserving veterans and their families.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet West basketball coach Nick DiForti said the Tigers “are still trying to figure it out, trying to find the right mix.

“But that’s alright,” DiForti added after Monday’s 69-66 loss to Mount Carmel in the MLK Day of Hoops at Joliet Central. “The guys are still going at it hard in practice, and nobody is pressing the panic button.”

West (8-9) got off to a good start, leading Mount Carmel (6-16) late in the first quarter, 18-9. Then the roof caved in. In the final nine minutes of the first half, the Tigers made 1 of 13 shots, 2 of 6 free throws, committed eight turnovers and were outscored, 23-4, to trail 32-22 at halftime.

The Caravan extended its lead to 41-26 early in the third quarter before West began chipping away. With sophomore Trevian Bell leading the charge, the Tigers drew back within 45-37 before settling for a 50-37 deficit after three quarters.

The issue for Bell and many of the other Tigers was too much fouling. West lost Bell, D’Anthony Wright, Jaron Nabors and Michael Ruwoldt to fouls. Mount Carmel finished 30 of 39 from the free-throw line – and in the final analysis, that was the game.

“We dug ourselves a big hole,” DiForti said. “We haven’t been able to finish out games, and sometimes that starts in the first half.

“We came back, but it’s hard to put

them on the line like we did and win. We always say you have to make your free throws and limit turnovers. They made more free throws than us [West was 19 of 34], and the turnovers probably were close [Mount Carmel committed 20, the Tigers 18].”

West’s senior long-range shooter, Tom Carney, started and had four points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer. He was on the floor to open the fourth quarter and caught fire, hitting three straight 3s to draw West within 50-46. He also hit two late free throws and finished with a teamhigh 15 points.

“That’s what Tom does,” DiForti said.

“Everybody knows he is in the game to shoot. The guys are setting good screens for him.”

After Carney’s long-range heroics, three Bell free throws got West within 51-50. The Tigers took their only lead of the second half, 61-59, when Malcohm Hill scored a traditional three-point play off an assist from Carney with 2:07 left.

However, Caravan junior guard Jake Rhode scored on a circus layup and a free throw to regain the lead. Mount Carmel held on after hitting 15 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Rhode and Christian Peevy combined for 43 points, including 24 of 30 free throws, for Mount Carmel. Jeff Washington scored 12, Hill 10 and Nabors and Bell nine for West. Nabors’ consecutive 3-pointers gave West the 18-9 lead late in the first quarter that was looking good at the time.

On Friday, the Raiders won, 65-55, over SouthWest Suburban Blue leader Homewood-Flossmoor to pull within a half-game of the Vikings.

On Saturday, behind 30 points from senior guard Brodric Thomas, the Raiders rolled past South Suburban Blue leader Hillcrest, 7464, at DePaul University.

And in Monday’s fourth game of Joliet Central’s annual Martin Luther King Day of Hoops, the Raiders routed Southland Conference leader Bloom Township, 54-37.

Bolingbrook (9-5), which began the season as one of the state’s top-ranked teams, opened up immediately on Bloom. Led by a pair of 3-pointers from Thomas, the Raiders exploded to a 11-0 lead in the first five minutes. Thomas’ lone two-point basket of the period gave the Raiders a 13-2 first-quarter lead.

After Bloom closed to within 18-14 behind a 7-0 run from DaVontae Henry (16 points), the Raiders’ Devon Sams (six points, four rebounds, two steals) hit a basket to ignite an 8-1 run that resulted in a 26-15 halftime lead.

The third quarter belonged to Thomas. His sixth assist led to another Sams bucket, then

“We really worked hard in practice, and we were tired of losing,” Akenten said. “Everybody forgot about us, and we wanted to make a name for ourselves. We executed our

game plan completely. Coach told me to go out rebound, and I executed and had a good game. My football skills help me to be a quality rebounder.

Catching a pass and grabbing a rebound are the same thing.”

Bolingbrook returns to SouthWest Suburban Blue action Friday, hosting Lockport at 7 p.m.

“We really played well this weekend, and it led to three big wins,” Brost said. “Brodric has been the best player on the floor the last two games. He is playing very, very well. Dimitri does a great job on the glass and knows his role and does well for us. My team’s psyche concerns are gone. Three wins in four days. We will be fine.”

JOLIET – With two of his top players unavailable for Monday’s Martin Luther King Day of Hoops event at Joliet Central, Romeoville boys basketball coach Marc Howard decided to go with even younger look for his squad.

The Spartans coach pulled up some players from his lower levels to play along with a squad that already features a pair of freshmen.

While the youthful lineup fell behind early to Richmond-Burton and struggled to get closer than 10 points back throughout, it kept battling

and eventually closed the gap to its narrowest margin since the early going before dropping a 62-58 decision to the Rockets.

With Matt Cappelletti out with an injury until Friday and Chuck Hunter away on a football visit, three of Romeoville’s top five scorers in Monday’s games were underclassmen.

Sophomore Robert Johnson tossed in 12 points, which was second on the squad to freshman London Stamps, who hit a 3-pointer in the late going to give him 15 points.

JOLIET – One thing Lincoln-Way West boys basketball coach Brian Flaherty has been able to count on during his team’s successful season is that it will battle throughout.

That’s why the Warriors boss was disappointed with his squad after it turned in an uncharacteristic showing in Monday’s Martin Luther King Day of Hoops at Joliet Central.

West fell behind Rich Central in the second quarter and never was able to recover, as it dropped a 55-42 decision to fall to 11-3 on the season.

“We were like a different team today,” Flaherty said.

“We were flat, and I didn’t like our body language. I just thought that we got outtoughed and out-physicaled.

They played harder and wanted it more than we did. I’ve never seen us come out that passive before. There’s nothing that we can do about this game now, so we just have to shake it off.

“I thought that we got the ball in areas and settled a little here and there for perimeter jump shots and didn’t take the basketball up aggressively like we had talked about. We want-

The Olympians (11-6) moved in front for good in the second period and built a 2217 lead at the break. West cut the deficit to four points early in the third quarter, but Rich Central was able to maintain a 36-30 advantage with eight minutes remaining.

The Tigers’ 72-34 victory Monday night over Sandburg at Joliet Central was their sixth straight and displayed their savvy on both ends of the court.

There was Kevin Krieger, the smooth-shooting junior, drilling home a quartet of 3-point shots in North’s game-opening 18-point run.

There was the 66.7 percent overall shooting from the floor.

There was the defense that forced Sandburg into 17 turnovers and held the Eagles to back-to-back four-point quarters.

Most of all, there was confidence. The Tigers (14-3) walked onto the court as if they owned it, with quiet poise. The early minutes, when Krieger was obliterating Sandburg’s zone and the defense was suffocating the

Eagles (6-10) reinforced the notion.

“That’s what we’ve been preaching the last two weeks – defensive intensity, getting out in the passing lanes,” Tigers coach Robert Krahulik said. “Once we rebound, let’s get it out and go.

Most of our points in the first half came from transition.”

They also came from Krieger, who was 8 of 12 from the floor and led all hands with 22 points.

Trevor Stumpe, usually the Tigers’ leading scorer, had 10 points, as did center Cody Conway.

“It was good to get out on transition and start shooting the ball,” Krieger said. “Once I got my rhythm, I just went from there. It just happened with the game flow and the 2-3 zone. Getting out in the passing lanes and pressuring the ball led to our offense.”

Two of Plainfield North’s three losses this season came back-to-back in the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. The subsequent run has shown the Tigers have learned from the defeats at the hands of St. Charles North and

Curie.

“We learned we had to be a smarter team, had to be better guarding the ball,” Krahulik said. “The teams that beat us there basically broke us down off the dribble.”

Sandburg couldn’t do so, and the Tigers had the run of the court. North built its 18-0 lead on Krieger’s four 3-pointers, a pair of free-throws by him, and a layup by Jake Nowak. On the other end of the court, Sandburg missed six shots and turning the ball over on three occasions.

The Eagles scored on their 10th possession, Lee Demogerontas connecting, and closed the gap to eight points on a 10-point run late in the first quarter, but North won the second quarter by a 16-4 margin and was able to coast thereafter. Tommy Demogerontas’ eight points led Sandburg.

The Tigers return to the Southwest Prairie Conference grind Friday against Minooka – with the rematch against Plainfield East, which inflicted their only conference loss, looming two weeks after that.

SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University’s men’s basketball team was hoping to extend its Great Lakes Valley Conference win streak to three straight when it returned to action Monday.

The only problem was that the Flyers had to get past their first ranked opponent of the season, No. 22 Wisconsin-Parkside, which had lost only once and was perfect in the GLVC. Despite trailing by 10 points early in the second half, Lewis rallied to take the lead late in the game. But the Rangers responded by scoring the final five points to capture a 69-65 win at Neil Carey Arena.

Things were looking good for UW-P (15-1, 7-0) when it took a 54-44 lead with 14:23 left. But the Flyers (12-4, 4-3) stormed back to pull to within 56-55 with 8:08 remaining after a pair of free throws from Max Strus (21 points, seven rebounds).

Strus forced a 64-64 tie when he made a layup with 2:49 left, and then Brad Foster hit a free throw with 2:05 left to give Lewis a 65-64 lead. But Parkside’s Jimmy Gavin made a 3-pointer with 1:37 to go, and the Rangers added two late free throws. Zygimantas Riauka had 23 points to lead all scorers.

The Flyers also received 13 points from Gabe Williams, nine points from Capel Henshaw, 10 re-

bounds from Julian Lewis and seven rebounds from David Niggins.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush LAKE FOREST – The best thing about John Fox being the new coach of the Bears is that 10 seconds into his introductory news conference Monday, it was clear he is the kind of guy you’d love to hang out with at the corner tavern and knock a few back, gals and guys invited.

Not once in nine years with Lovie Smith or two seasons with Marc Trestman did I ever get the impression that we might enjoy hanging out.

Lovie wasn’t a bad guy, but he was never truly at ease with the media or fans, and things got progressively worse as his coaching tenure wore on.

Personally, I really like Trestman and former general manager Phil Emery, probably in part because of their awkwardness – and awkward is the only way one can objectively describe their public personas.

Why does this matter?

garden and current honeymoon the Bears are enjoying isn’t going to last forever.

Ask Fox’s predecessors.

They aren’t a playoff team that was general managed and coached to a 5-11 record. They are a 5-11 team with overrated talent in several areas, and GM Ryan Pace and Fox now have to set about the difficult task of fixing that.

There will be potholes, molehills and possibly even a mountain or two to climb along the way.

Over the past decade when things got tough, Bears fans got angry, and Smith and Trestman usually just made things worse.

Most of the time that Smith and Trestman spent at the podium, you couldn’t escape the feeling they would have much rather been at the dentist.

Fox is a savvy veteran of these wars, and I got the impression as I watched him say hello Monday that in another life I could see him occasionally calling in to an all-sports talker to share an opinion or two.

Great news guys: It seems as though Fox is one of us, a trait almost never found in an

NFL coach.

Pete Carroll has it, the Harbaugh brothers, Chuck Pagano and Bruce Arians do, too, and by the way, what else do they all have in common?

I think this is going to be fun.

Here is what Fox said about his style: “It’s honesty. Sometimes people are sugarcoating, sometimes it’s third-party conversations. You see a lot in any business, and that’s no different in the NFL. “I’m brutally honest. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’m not afraid or intimidated about telling people the truth.”

If Fox delivers on that promise, we’re all going to do just fine.

Asked about the serious health issue he dealt with during the 2013 season, Fox quipped, “It was a four-week layover. I was back four weeks post-op, came back and actually got on guys in my training room and said, ‘Dude, that’s a sprained ankle. I just had open-heart surgery.’ So it gives me a little juice in the locker room.”

Foxism of the day. Asked about the daunting task of leading this storied franchise and the second-biggest market in the league, Fox said, “I’ve been in this city, and I’m not going to mention names, but it’s kind of vicious in the newspapers and all that stuff.

I wasn’t on the receiving end, but I still feel for the other guy.

“But that’s OK. Like I said before, this is a competitive game. We know what we’re signing up for. I tell my players all the time, we’re under attack. You can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen.

It’s what we sign up for. It’s why we’re compensated so well for what we do.

“I explained to my wife one time wondering what time I’m going to be home. I said, ‘Honey, I’ll get a paper route. I’ll be home a lot, but we’ve got to move.’ I was younger and not as mature when I said that.”

Let’s worry about Super Bowls later. For now, I think we’re really going to like this guy.

She also gets headaches in the winter that she said her doctors believe are from vasoconstriction of her blood vessels.

Margo McIntyre of Morris always is cold during winter and said it’s hard to bear.

“I was born in Wisconsin and have endured a lot of cold weather,” McIntyre said. “It never bothered me until I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Since then, the cold weather is just painful.”

Getting a little chilly in the cold weather and dreaming of a Gulf of Mexico vacation are pretty normal; but for others who have special considerations or pre-existing conditions, it’s essential to keep warm when the thermometer drops.

It’s well-known the physical effort that comes with shoveling wet, heavy snow can send some into cardiac arrest. Frostbite also is common knowledge, and people generally know that keeping extremities warm when out in the cold helps prevent it.

But low temperatures can affect bodies in other, more surprising ways. Studies show more people die during the winter months for reasons that have nothing to do with heavy physical activity or frostbite. This occurs all over the world, in cooler and in warmer climates.

For instance, California sees a 33 percent increase in heart attacks during the winter months when temperatures decrease. Low temperatures significantly increase deaths by strokes as well, and deaths from respiratory diseases can climb by 47 percent during the season, according to a summary of studies presented in the online journal, CO2 Science at www.co2science.org.

So how is it that cold kills? Silver Cross Hospital pulmonologist and critical-care physician Dr. Salah Lababidy said one way is by increasing blood pressure. When blood pressures increase, so do strokes.

“So there are more strokes in cold climates and with decreasing temperatures,” Lababidy said, “because of the increase in blood pressure. Both the diastolic and systolic pressures can increase by 20 or 25 millimeters of mercury. That is significant.”

Blood pressure increases are seen in those who have underlying conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and irregular heartbeat. Healthy individuals will not have the same outcome, he said.

Cold weather also affects kidneys, Lababidy said, causing what’s called cold diuresis, and an increase

in urine production. When there is less fluid in the blood, there can be hemoconcentration, which increases the risk for clotting, leading to heart attacks and strokes.

These cold effects can last for weeks, as opposed to what heat does to the body, which lasts only a day or two.

The immune system also is compromised by the cold, according to Lababidy, especially in the lungs.

One type of white blood cell, the neutrophil, becomes relatively dysfunctional in cold weather, he said.

Neutrophils are an essential part of our body’s response to bacteria, cancer cells and other antigens.

Lababidy said respiratory diseases

also significantly increase during the winter. One reason is that breathing in cold air has a direct effect on lung tissue. It can trigger a reaction in those who have asthma, he said. Cold temperatures also can indirectly lead to more colds and influenzas.

“Flu and cold viruses survive better in cold weather,” he said.

“Plus, we are more vulnerable to those viruses in cold weather. Living in cold climates has a significant risk for respiratory illness.”

That’s why Alonzo said she likes to head south to Florida. Lababidy said he has many patients who spend their winters in the South, and they tend to have fewer illnesses.

To keep warm, Alonzo said she uses hand warmers. McIntyre said it helps to wear layers and to take a hot shower. A nice cup of hot coffee doesn’t hurt, either, she added.

Lababidy said the big picture is to make sure one feels warm.

“People feel cold differently,” Lababidy said. “Your body will tell you if you’re comfortable. You don’t want to feel cold. Listen to your body.”

Virtually everyone who visits the dentist will have X-rays taken at some point. Teeth, bones, fillings and restorations appear lighter because they block more of the X-rays than soft tissue.

Dear Reader: Even if you brush your teeth three times a day and floss daily, regular checkups with a dental professional are a must. For most people, two checkups a year are enough. That’s what I have. Routine visits usually include a professional cleaning, an exam and possibly X-rays.

Professional cleaning rids your teeth of tartar.

This thick stuff can build up in places that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. Or in places that are easy to reach with a toothbrush – if you don’t regularly use a toothbrush!

If tartar is not removed, it can lead to cavities and tooth decay.

During the cleaning, the dentist or hygienist might use a small metal instrument with a bladelike end to scrape off tartar above and below the gum line. He or she may also use an ultrasonic vibrating device to shake loose plaque and tartar.

The dentist or hygienist will polish your teeth with a lightly abrasive paste and finish up with a flossing.

After your teeth are clean, your dentist will examine them, looking for early signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer or other dental problems and take appropriate action.

He or she will look for signs of decay, using a metal probe and a small mirror with an angled handle. The dentist will check for gum disease by examining your gums for swelling and redness and by measuring the spaces between the teeth and the gums.

Dear Abby: I came out of the closet when my son was 4. I thought I had taught him not to judge because of a label. He’s now 30, with a wife and two adorable children who own my heart.

When my granddaughter was born, my partner and I were at the hospital and have visited with them often and they with us.

However, after my grandson was born last year, my son quit speaking to me.

I have asked him numerous times what the issue is.
