Joliet legend Ladas dies at 85 VIEWS Dick Goss He was the “Voice of Joliet.” He was this city’s ambassador. As he said many times, “This area is second to none.”

That’s how Don Ladas felt about his lifelong home, and Joliet felt the same about him. Ladas died Sunday morning following a long illness. He was 85.

For 54 years, Ladas carried the WJOL Radio microphone interviewing sports figures, broadcasting local games and hosted Tenpin Topics, the longest-running radio bowling program in the nation.

He interviewed big names in sports. The cover of his biography, “The Voice of Joliet ... The Life and Times of Hall of Fame Radio Sportscaster Don Ladas,” authored by former Herald-News sports writer Gary Seymour, is adorned with a picture of Ladas interviewing Willie Mays at Wrigley Field. His interview list included Mickey Mantle and Dizzy Dean.

And yet, Ladas’ first love always was promoting local athletes. He made them feel comfortable when he

interviewed them, and he never quit following their careers when they became national figures.

Ed Spiezio, “Billy Boy” Thompson, Tom Thayer, Bill Gullickson, Jesse Barfield, Jeff Reed, Mark Grant, Terry Gannon, Mike Alstott, Scott Spiezio, L a r r y Gura, Bill Don Ladas Sudakis and Ron Coomer are just a few in that elite group. Gullickson’s comment in “The Voice of Joliet” spoke for everyone: He said whenever he was approached by Ladas, it was an honor for him to give the interview.

Seymour talked with University of St. Francis legends Gordie Gillespie and Pat Sullivan for his book. They praised Ladas for his dedication to Joliet, and both emphasized that what set Ladas apart from so many others in the media is that in addition to being knowledgeable, he was always positive. He never embarrassed anyone.

That applied whether he was broadcasting Little League, high school or college games. If a booted

ground ball, a missed free throw or a kid striking out ended a game that the local team lost, he praised the opponent, and praised the losing side for all the good things it did that day.

Sports fans appreciated him for that.

Yes, he spoke his own language. Hitters stepped to the plate swinging the shillelagh rather than the bat, pitchers tried to throw the apple over the platter and free throws were shot from the charity stripe.

When Ladas covered a game, however, it was easy to picture exactly what was transpiring. Thousands of local sports fans of generations past remember going to sleep with the transistor radio tuned to Ladas’ broadcasts on WJOL tucked under their pillow.

A longtime bowling proprietor, Ladas never wavered in promoting the tenpin game. He published the monthly Will County Sportsman magazine for more than 30 years. He also brought boxing events to Joliet, and he was a man of charity.

He organized the annual Multiple Sclerosis Benefit Softball Game. He broadcast the Wish Upon A Star Foundation’s Softball in the Snow benefit game for

more than 30 years. He was a longtime board member and former president of the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County.

He was sought after to be the point man for various community functions and almost never said no.

He was a member of the inaugural class of the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame and was selected for the Joliet/Will County Hall of Pride. He is in several other Halls of Fame, among them the Illinois Sportscasters, Illinois Basketball, Illinois State Bowling, Joliet Junior College, Minor League/Pro Football National Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio (Media) and has been honored

by Unico, University of St. Francis and Lewis University, among others.

Ladas is survived by his wife Mary Lou, children Sheri (Jonathan Voss), Angie (Peter Kapellas), and Donald Jr. (Sara) and several grandchildren - Andrew, Abigail and Aidan Voss; Trent and Tess Kapellas, and Donald III and Darcie Ladas.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Tezak’s Funeral Home.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Immaculate Church in Plainfield.

CARRYING ON KING’S WORK Joliet comes together to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com JOLIET – During Sunday’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day ecumenical celebration at Prayer Tower Ministries COGIC, community leaders who continue to fight for justice in his name were honored.

The Rev. Ray Lescher of Sacred Heart Catholic Church presented the Excellence in Community award to Maria Rosa, president of Concerned Citizens of Joliet.

“She is a fighter for justice,” Lescher said, in presenting Rosa with the award.

Rosa humbly accepted the award.

“We are all brothers and sisters and here for one cause, our community and our needs,” she said.

Her words echoed the theme of the night, “The Unfinished Agenda, The Work Continues On.” The event was sponsored by the Joliet chapter of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.

Lescher urged all those in attendance to carry on King’s work.

“Sadly for many of us living in the U.S. today, his life and message has been watered down,” he said.

King, whose birthday was Jan. 15, would have been 85 this year. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Monday is a national holiday in remembrance and celebration of his life.

The Rev. Herbert Brooks Jr., of St. John Baptist Church and Will County Board Speaker, noted that it was appropriate the celebration was taking place inside a church.

The keystone speaker was the Rev. Gregory Seal Livingston, senior pastor of Mission of Faith Baptist Church in Chicago. He previously served as national field secretary and chief of field operations for the Rainbow/ PUSH Coalition.

He spoke about the importance of doing what it is right.

“The heart matters, if it is in your heart to do the right thing,”

Brides flock to Rialto for wedding tips Thrifty pointers offered to betrothed

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Budget-minded brides-to-be were on hand Sunday at the annual Rialto Square Theater Bridal Show to get tips on saving money from Margaret Moore with Simple Elegance Floral and Event Design during her Wedding 101 workshop.

“We are offering three workshops this year,” said Trish Stoner, event co-ordinator with the Rialto Square Theater. “They will learn how to plan a wedding without going broke.”

Moore said while styles and colors change from year to year, budgets always are on the mind of some brides-to-be.

“There are two things I tell brides not to cut back on, the bouquet and the photographer,” Moore said. “If they need to cut back on flowers they should do it at the reception, but not on the bouquet.

That is going to be in every photograph that will hang in their home.”

Lauren Morman of Shorewood said being cost-effective is the most important thing to her, but so is being flexible.

Morman is scheduled to get married in September but her wedding date could change through no fault of her own, or her fiance’s.

“My fiance is overseas in the military.

It was difficult finding vendors who could be flexible and would understand if we have to switch the date if he can’t get leave at that time,” Morman said.

She attended the event with her best friend, Nikki Merriman, who also is planning a wedding for 2016.

“The price point is the biggest worry,” Merriman said.

She wants to have her wedding on a beach in Florida but is trying to find affordable choices from her home in Illinois.

Stoner said there was a good response to the show again this year, with organizers being able to offer 48 vendors for brides-to-be to meet with.

“It’s always well-attended,” Stoner said. “It’s an event for us like any show would be and it gives us a chance to show off the place.”

Minooka administrators look to eliminate making class rank public

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka Community High School administrators will take a deeper look into the questions of whether to make students’ class rank public.

Principal Darcie Kubinski announced at Thursday’s District 111 school board meeting that a focus group on the matter is being formed this month.

The aim of the group will be to study and discuss the issue of eliminating or changing the reporting of the district’s ranking system.

Many high schools today are foregoing the class ranking system, saying it will cut down on competition in schools and force colleges to look more closely

at the high school students and their achievements.

Others say when colleges do not have a student’s class rank, it makes it more difficult for admissions officials to compare applicants, forcing more weight to be placed on SAT and ACT scores.

Neighboring Morris Community High School, after months of research and discussion, recently decided to eliminate class rank starting with the Class of 2018.

According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, which represents high school guidance counselors and college admissions officers, colleges have been less interested in high school students’ class rank in the

past decade, as high schools use different ranking systems that vary from school to school. Many do still take rank into consideration, however, for admission as well as scholarship eligibility.

Parents are being sought to participate in the focus group that will meet twice monthly beginning in early February and going through June. The group will be open to those who want to participate. Details are to be posted on the district’s website.

Also scheduled to be posted on the website by Tuesday is the high school’s 2014-2015 school calendar, approved by the board Thursday. The first day of student attendance will be Aug. 13.

Students support their own at ‘Mini’ Relay for Life

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Cancer takes all shapes and impacts almost everyone in some way. Minooka students and community members acknowledged that Sunday.

For the second year in a row, the Minooka High School National Honor Society organized the American Cancer Society’s “Mini” Relay for Life of Grundy County at Minooka Central High School.

This year’s goal is to best last year’s $12,000 and raise $15,000.

At the start, $7,000 had already been raised, NHS moderator Donna Engel said.

“It amazes me – the energy you have,” spokeswoman Carrie Robinette

of the Cancer Society told the group of a 100-plus assembled students and community members at the kick-off.

She said the funds raised will be used locally at places like JOHA in Joliet and Morris Hospital, which serve community members undergoing cancer treatment. Funds will also be used to support efforts for research, as well as give housing assistance to families who have to travel for treatments.

The 11-hour event started with a survivors’ and caregivers’ lap. Before the event, the NHS students decorated seven hallways and areas with different colors signifying different types of cancer. The students also planned a whole day of themed laps, like Olympics and a tiara walk.

There was also a children’s walk in the gymnasium which emphasized fun and learning facts about cancer, which were printed on a “yellow brick road.”

The Minooka High School Community recognized two of its own, teacher Sam Pavelka and junior student Alex Czuczuk, who are both fighting sarcoma. Both talked about the encouraging results that they have had recently in their medical conditions.The two walked the first lap, along with other cancer survivors and supporters,

High school students lined the walk route which wove back and forth through the school. Cheers and clapping sounded as the survivors passed by.

When Pavelka saw the corridor sign that read “Sarcoma,” he said to Alex, “There’s ours.”

The day culminated in a luminaria lighting followed by a Star Warsthemed lap in memory of Michael Assaf, a Minooka teacher who died a year ago from pancreatic cancer.

Former school teacher inspired others to service

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com Once upon a time, Helen Polochi ran a neighborhood grocery store, a place with a charge book for customers, who settled their tab each payday, said Joseph Benson of Joliet.

Helen was unable to have children, or so she thought because 13 years later, along came Melanie, a miracle baby who everyone in the community knew and loved, Joseph said, someone who remained close her entire life to the core group of friends she met in grade school.

By 10, Melanie was the after-school help who stocked shelves and swept floors. At 14, Melanie was attending the former St. Francis Academy in Joliet and delivering groceries in her mother’s 1953 standard transmission Chevrolet.

Melanie would return to her high school as a teacher for 16 years – 12 when it was still St. Francis Academy the academy and four after its merger with the former Joliet Catholic High School to become Joliet Catholic Academy – and initiate one of area’s first community service program for students, Joseph said.

Through arranging them to pack groceries for low-income families, Joseph said, his wife, Melanie Benson of Joliet, opened up the eyes of many students to see the meager amount of food some “families of four had to live on for a week.” For-

“She was passionate about injustice in the world. At any time she was faced with it, she would address it,” Joseph said.

“She taught her students that every life is valuable, no matter what it was, if it moved and breathed.

She had a standing rule in her room: If anyone saw a bug, they were not to step on it but slide a piece of paper under it and take it outside.”

Joseph, who attended high school in Wilmington, met Melanie at a “girl ask boy” dance held at the former Woodruff Hotel in Joliet. Melanie and her date sat behind Joseph and his date. At one point, each shifted their respective chairs and Joseph beheld “a beautiful face and lovely eyes.” And Melanie, Joseph added, looked right back at him.

“She just had an aura of kindness about her,” he said. “She had openness and such a good nature, it

was easy to love her.”

They were married Thanksgiving weekend at the former St. Mary Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church in Joliet (now Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer Glen). The reception was a turkey dinner at the Woodruff Hotel.

Just once, when Joseph’s work took him to Oklahoma City, they moved from Joliet. Even there, Melanie became involved with a social service agency that provided clothing, household items and counseling referrals to needy individuals, Joseph said. But then, Joseph said, Melanie was “always the one that tried to give back.” For Joseph’s family, it’s become a never-ending gift. He used to tell Melanie, “You’ve left your mark more than you know.”

Melanie died on Dec. 11 at the age of 72, but her spirit, Joseph said, lives on through their three daughters: Melissa Benson of California, Monica Jasper of Minooka and Merritt Franco of Chicago.

“It’s just so easy to see,” Joseph said. “They’re independent and caring women, very passionate about the world and all things in it. I have no regrets. I told Melanie every day that I loved her; I told her many times how grateful I was she looked my way.”

If I or another kid was struggling, you were always there to help. When I did bad on my World War I test, you helped me in study hall and made sure I understood what question I had missed.”

Providence has 300 students in the freshman class and nearly that many teachers found out recently they made a difference in at least one student’s life.

A group of Minooka Grade School teachers were among many who received letters of thanks from former students now attending Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox.

As their first English assignment in high school, freshman at Providence were asked to write a letter to a former teacher or coach who made a positive impact on their lives.

The assignment is an important academic tool, of course, teaching elements of creative writing, punctuation analyzing and revision techniques, among others, Providence Principal Don Sebestyen said.

But the end result, sent to the former teachers after winter break, is acknowledgment and appreciation for their work.

Providence makes every possible effort to track down the teachers and coaches who may live in other states or retired, Sebestyen said.

“We have received a number of emails, calls and letters over the years from those teachers thanking us for the student letters and how much they appreciate them,” he said.

This is the first year Minooka Junior High School Principal Shane Trager received the letters for eight of his teachers.

“It was pretty cool,” Trager said. “They could have written about anybody but they chose their junior high teachers.”

School District accepts member’s resignation Court hearings result in board members forced resignation

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – The Gardner Grade School District accepted board member Gary Morris’ resignation from the school board last week.

His resignation came after months of court hearings on the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office’s complaint against him, stating the District 72C board member does not live in the school dis-

trict, and asked for his resignation.

School district Superintendent Tony Whiston said Friday the resignation was accepted at Thursday’s board meeting without much comment and Gary Morris, also known as Nick Morris, was not present.

In a phone call Friday, Morris said he had no comment.

Morris originally responded to the complaint filed in August that he lives at 207 E. Odell St. in Gardner, which is the address on his driver’s license, voter’s registration card and checking account.

In the complaint, Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman stated Morris lists his home ad-

The school board did not vote on it until this week. The next court date is set for 9 a.m. Friday.

Rudman was not in the office Friday.

“As I understand it, he was a board member for a lot of years. The public elected him. It’s sad he doesn’t live down there,” he said previously.

The school board has 45 days to appoint someone to fill Morris’ former position. Whiston said the board has already had three people express interest.

LONDON – Christopher Chataway, a former 5,000-meter world record-holder who helped Roger Bannister break the four-minute mile, has died. He was 82.

Chataway, who was knighted

by Queen Elizabeth II in 1995, died Sunday at a hospice in London after more than two years fighting cancer, his son Mark said.

The middle-distance runner competed at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics, and acted as a pacemaker to help Bannister become the first man to break the four-minute mile barrier in 1954.

“We laughed, ran and commiserated together,” Bannister told the BBC. “People will always remember him for the great runner he was, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that he had an extremely distinguished career off the track.”

Chataway gained recognition for himself in 1954 as well, winning the three-mile race at the Commonwealth Games.

television as a newscaster with Independent Television News in 1955, and then had spells in the House of Commons as a member of the Conservative Party.

He was knighted for his services to the aviation industry in 1995, having been chairman of the Civil Aviation authority.

Former England goalkeeper in 1950 World Cup dies

By ROB HARRIS The Associated Press LONDON – Bert Williams, the England goalkeeper who gave up the goal that allowed a team of journeymen Americans at the 1950 World Cup to produce one of soccer’s great upsets, has died. He was 93.

His death was announced Sunday on the website of his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers. No cause was given.

Williams struggled to shake the memories of the 1950 trip to Brazil when England arrived at its first World Cup as one of the

favorites, but departed after a 1-0 loss that left all of soccer in disbelief.

Williams spent almost the entire 90 minutes in Belo Horizonte watching his England teammates make wave after wave of attacks in the group game. But the only goal was scored by Joe Gaetjens in the first half for an American team that arrived at the stadium smoking cigars and wearing cowboy hats.

The result was such a shock that some in the media wondered whether the score was 10-1 for England instead of 1-0 for the Americans. In the U.S., the

game was labeled the “Miracle on Grass.”

“It’s been 60 years. It’s taken a lot of forgetting as far as I am concerned,” Williams told The Associated Press before England played the U.S. at the 2010 World Cup. “We thought the score should have been 8-1, 10-1 even – and I was virtually one of the spectators,” he added.

Behind a team that included England greats such as Tom Finney, Stan Mortensen and Alf Ramsey, who coached the team to its 1966 World Cup triumph, Williams said he was little more

than an onlooker.

“There was no shaking of hands after the game, but no animosity at all. Just utter, sheer dejection. We just couldn’t believe it,” Williams recalled. “I think what lost us the match against Spain was the utter dejection from losing 1-0 to the Americans. Our spirits were so low. I felt sorry for everyone who was on that tour.”

Although Williams played only 24 times for his country, he was one of the most recognizable names. When he played in a 2-0 victory over Italy in 1949, the Italians nicknamed him “The

Cat” for his spectacular saves.

He spent most of his playing career at central England club Wolves, winning the FA Cup in 1949 and the top-tier title in 1954.

“Bert was not only a fantastic footballer both for club and country, but also a true gentleman who loved Wolves,” chairman Steve Morgan said Sunday.

“As a young football fan who used to read about the achievements of that all-conquering Wolves team of the 1950s, it was an honor and a privilege to have been able to meet Bert on so many occasions since I arrived at the club in 2007.”

Budget, election to drive Ill. lawmakers’ agenda

SPRINGFIELD – Compared with last year’s session, when Illinois lawmakers tackled major issues ranging from pensions to gay marriage to concealed carry, the legislative work that begins later this month likely will be less ambitious but more politically driven because of looming elections.

Tax questions are expected to dominate the agenda, including what to do about the pending expiration of the temporary income tax, corporate tax incentives, Chicago pension reform and the possibility of a capital construction bill that could boost Gov. Pat Quinn’s re-election bid.

“It’s going to be popular-vote issues,” House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said. “The financial issues of the state are finally taking root.”

Control of the governor’s mansion is on the line in the upcoming election, as well as the Democrats’ veto-proof margins in the House and Senate.

Republicans are aiming to convince voters that they would be better stewards of public funds if put in charge. Democrats, in turn, will portray the GOP as hurting the most vulnerable Illinoisans with aggressive cuts.

Lawmakers return to Springfield on Jan. 28, one day ahead of Quinn’s State of the State speech.

Among the things they’re expected to discuss immediately is what to do about the scheduled rollback of

the state’s temporary income tax increase from 5 percent to 3.75 percent next January – halfway through the upcoming fiscal year.

In a report released earlier this month, Quinn’s office of management and budget outlined a threeyear projection showing the state’s deficit would grow to $1.9 billion in 2015 and $4.1 billion in 2016 if the increase sunsets as scheduled. The state’s backlog of bills would also grow, from an expected $5.6 billion at the end of this fiscal year in July to $16.2 billion in 2017.

Quinn’s February budget address will serve as the opening salvo of negotiations with lawmakers as he announces his spending priorities for the year.

The Chicago Democrat has not yet said whether he wants to extend the tax increase. Three of the four GOP candidates – Winnteka businessman Bruce Rauner, state Sen. Bill Brady and State Sen. Kirk Dillard – want the hike to lapse. The other, state treasurer Dan Rutherford, has said he could be open to negotiations.

The issue will be vital to the GOP’s voting base in the 2014 general election. Democratic lawmakers are seeking to keep it in place by spelling out doomsday scenarios of draconian cuts to schools and social services should there be a rollback.

jections, forcing them to plan for a worst-case scenario.

“I don’t think we should be appropriating money that I’m not sure we’re going to have,” said state Sen. Julie Morrison, a Deerfield Democrat.

Besides debating the temporary income tax extension, lawmakers also

are expected to look into the idea of a graduated income tax. Democratic state Sen. Don Harmon has proposed an amendment to the state constitution that would set different income tax rates depending on individuals’ incomes – essentially making the wealthy pay more.

Some conservatives have resisted that proposal. The advocacy group Americans for Prosperity is running video spots against Democratic lawmakers in moderate, suburban districts who are seen as vulnerable in their re-election bids. Among the targets is Rep. Marty Moylan of Des Plaines, who says he hasn’t yet made up his mind on the issue.

“We have to get more information,” he said.

“I’m getting criticized from both sides for not taking a stance.”

Corporate tax incentives also are expected to come up during the session, as members of both parties figure to talk on the campaign trail about keeping businesses in Illinois.

Lawmakers adjourned for the year in December without granting tax breaks to several large companies that requested them, including Archer Daniels Midland, Univar and Office Max. Democratic Rep. Jack Franks of Marengo is pushing for the state’s main economic development tool, the EDGE program, to be revamped, citing a culture of “insider deals” that’s blunting the state’s economic recovery.

Supporters of the breaks argue they are important for keeping and attracting more jobs.

After having dealt with the state’s own pension problems last spring, Democrats intend to take up the pension crises affecting Chicago and other Illinois cities.

Democratic Senate

President John Cullerton, who has said Chicago’s pension problem is even worse than the state’s, wants to take up the issue as soon as lawmakers return. Spokeswoman Rikeesha Phelon said Cullerton was “keeping his schedule open” to meet with other legislative leaders this week to discuss a plan. A vote could be especially difficult for Chicago Democrats who rely on support from the Chicago Teachers’ Union.

Although most of the lawmakers won’t face a major challenge until the November general election, the Republican battle for governor figures to be hotly contested leading up to the March 18 primary – halfway through the legislative session.

Durkin said among the bills on the table is one to fund a capital construction program, which could help Quinn portray himself as a job creator.

The last construction spending plan was approved by Quinn in 2009 – a $31 billion infusion creating thousands of jobs and helping rebuild the state’s crumbling infrastructure. It was paid for through higher taxes and a vast expansion of legalized gambling.

Republicans up and down the ticket also will aim to show solidarity in opposing and supporting specific policy, Durkin said.

“We’re going to be partners with Senate Republicans and gubernatorial candidates,” he said. “We want to be on the same page with the same message.”

Russian Islamic video threatens Olympics

By LYNN BERRY The Associated Press MOSCOW – An Islamic militant group in Russia’s North Caucasus claimed responsibility Sunday for twin suicide bombings in the southern city of Volgograd last month and posted a video threatening to strike the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

There had been no previous claim of responsibility for the bombings, which killed 34 people and heightened security fears before next month’s Winter Games.

In the video, two Russian-speaking men warned President Vladimir Putin that “If you hold these Olympics, we will give you a present for the innocent

Muslim blood being spilled all around the world: In Afghanistan, in Somalia, in Syria.”

They added that “for the tourists who come, there will be a present, too.”

In a statement posted with the video on its website, the militant group Vilayat Dagestan claimed responsibility for the Volgograd bombings.

The video claims that the two men, identified as Suleiman and Abdurakhman, were the suicide bombers and purports to show the explosives being prepared and strapped to their bodies.

There was no immediate reaction to the video from the Russian security services.

During much of the

49-minute video, the two men speak to the camera while holding Kalashnikov automatic rifles. Behind them hang black banners with Arabic religious phrases similar to those used by al-Qaida.

Vilayat Dagestan is one of the groups that make up the so-called Caucasus Emirate, which seeks to establish an independent Islamic state in the North Caucasus, a region just to the east of Sochi on Russia’s southern border.

Dagestan, one of several predominantly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus, has become the center of the Islamic insurgency that has spread throughout the region following separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya.

MLK Day of Hoops returns to Joliet Central

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The seventh annual Joliet Central MLK Day of Hoops tips off at 9 a.m. Monday.

The event features 14 local schools, eight games and more than 12 hours of boys basketball.

The day begins as the sophomore boys basketball team from Joliet Central and Bloom take the court at 9 a.m.

At the end of the day the Steelmen varsity team will take on Bloom at 7:30 p.m.

In between the bookend games, Romeoville and LaSalle-Peru, Lincoln-Way West and Yorkville, Bolingbrook and Mount Carmel, Plainfield North and Lemont, Sandburg and Crete-Monee, and Joliet West and Rich Central will all play their basketball games in the main gym.

Admission to MLK Day of Hoops is $6 a person; each ticket is good for the entire day.

The MLK Day of Hoops – which expanded from seven games to eight in 2011 – has become one of the premiere showcases of local basketball and marquee annual event in the Joliet community, according to Joliet Central Athletic Director Steve Locke.

“This is an event that the Joliet community and basketball fans always look forward to,” Locke said.

“We are approaching 10 years of doing the MLK Day of Hoops, and it’s matured into a a great tradition at

Joliet Central.

“We are proud to host this event again and portray the community, schools, teams, coaches and players in such a positive light.”

Locke estimates that between 1,000 and 2,000 people will attend the MLK Day of Hoops throughout the day.

Concessions will be sold during the event.

Area basketball players IF YOU NEED TO LOSE LESS hold court at next level Basketball coaches are judged on wins and losses, and whether those records meet our expectations.

An important element in what coaches do, however, often is overlooked.

Are the talented players who come through their program ready to play on the next level?

When you add that element to the equation, a couple of recent graduates are providing Lockport coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. and his staff with quite an endorsement.

Richaun Holmes, a 6-foot-8 junior forward at Bowling Green, and Karrington Ward, a 6-7 junior forward at Eastern Michigan, faced each other in a Mid-American Conference game Jan. 8.

Ward had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals in his team’s 56-51 victory. Holmes led Bowling Green with 17 points and seven boards.

It’s not like they were saving their best for their high school teammate, either. Holmes entered the weekend averaging 14.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in 31.3 minutes for Bowling Green (7-9, 1-2). He is shooting .563 from the field, .375 from three-point range and .691 from the free throw line.

Ward is averaging team-bests of 13.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 29.1 minutes for Eastern Michigan (10-6, 2-1). He laid 25 points on Purdue in a defeat. He is shooting .438 from the floor, .328 from three and .699 from

Ward is in his first season on the NCAA Division I level, having been a junior college All-American at Kankakee and Moraine Valley the last two years. Holmes starred at Moraine two years ago and is in his second season at Bowling Green.

Plainfield Central coach Steve Lamberti and his staff also have reason to be proud with what a former Wildcat, junior Derrick Marks, is doing at Boise State (12-5, 2-2).

Marks recently became the 24th member of Boise’s 1,000-point club.

He was a second-team All-Mountain West pick last year and was named to the Watch List in the preseason for the nation’s best point guard.

Marks is averaging 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals in 28.4 minutes. He is shooting .448 from the field and .813 from free throw line, which he visits often thanks to his strength and athleticism going to the basket.

Several other former area standouts also are doing the job in Division I ball. They include 6-8 freshman forward Ben Moore (Bolingbrook) at SMU, 6-9 sophomore forward Brian Bennett (Plainfield East) at Cal Poly, 6-6 senior forward Troy Snyder (Bolingbrook) at Maryland-East-

ern Shore and 6-0 junior guard Remy Roberts-Burnett (Joliet West) at Western Illinois.

Moore is averaging 12.9 minutes, 5.8 points and 3.4 rebounds for SMU (12-4). He is shooting .679 from the floor.

Bennett is averaging 20.4 minutes, 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds for Cal Poly (7-9, but 3-0 in the Big West).

Snyder, in his second season at Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-13) after transferring from Wisconsin-Green Bay, is averaging 7.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and is shooting .474 from the field.

Roberts-Burnett has battled injuries but has played in 11 games for Western Illinois (7-10). He is averaging 4.8 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

Next to join the men’s Division I ranks likely will be 6-9 Marlon Johnson (Joliet West), a sophomore at Tallahassee Community College.

He was ranked by Up Next Recruits as the No. 9 junior college prospect in the nation. He is averaging 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting .471 from the floor and .613 from the line.

This area is not always looked upon as a boys basketball hotbed. But considering how well so many of our own are faring in Division I, and how many others are making a splash in Division II, III and NAIA, someone here must be doing something right.

Then came a wellplaced wrist shot, and the Blackhawks had another big victory.

Something about the Boston Bruins brings out the best in Kane and Co. Kane scored in a shootout to lift the Hawks to a 3-2 win over Boston on Sunday in a rematch of last season’s Stanley Cup finals, capping an impressive weekend for the Hawks that also included a victory over NHL-leading

Anaheim.

“Two big games against two great teams,” Kane said. “I can’t say we were going as well as we wanted to before these two games.”

Jonathan Toews beat Tuukka Rask on the stick side to give the Hawks the lead in the tiebreaker, but Brad Marchand’s quick wrist shot got by Corey Crawford, tying it up for the Bruins.

Kane, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy last year as playoff MVP, then skated toward the goal, slowed up for a second and sent a shot past Rask on the stick side to give the Hawks the win. The Hawks had lost their pre-

vious seven games that had gone past regulation.

“It was a great test, and nice to finally get a shootout win, too,” coach Joel Quenneville said.

Marian Hossa and Brandon Bollig had the regulation goals for the Hawks, which beat Boston in six games in June for the title. Quenneville picked up win No. 692, matching Dick Irvin Sr., for third on the NHL’s career list.

Marchand scored in each of the first two periods for the Bruins, who had won two of three. Rask had 35 stops.

“It’s always nice to get a couple, but I wasn’t really worried about trying

to redeem myself from the finals or anything like that,” said Marchand, who was shut out in the playoff series against the Hawks.

“It was just a big game for our team and we need these points right now.”

It was Boston’s first visit to Chicago since June 22, when the Hawks used two goals by Kane to win 3-1 and take a 3-2 lead in the NHL finals. The Hawks then had a memorable rally in Game 6 in Boston, scoring twice in 17 seconds late in the third to secure their second title in four seasons.

The series included five overtime periods, including three in Chicago’s 4-3 victory in Game 1.

Seahawks move onto Super Bowl

By BARRY WILNER The Associated Press SEATTLE – The Seattle Seahawks are bringing their game-changing defense – and the 12th Man – to the Big Apple for the Super Bowl.

Seattle’s top-ranked defense forced three fourth-quarter turnovers, and Russell Wilson threw a 35-yard touchdown pass on fourth down for the winning points in a 23-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC title Sunday.

Seattle will meet Denver (15-3) for the NFL title in two weeks in the New Jersey Meadowlands. It’s the first trip to the big game for the Seahawks (15-3) since they lost to Pittsburgh after the 2005 season.

The conference champs had the best records in the league this year, the first time the top seeds have gotten to the Super Bowl since the 2010 game.

Julia Robles of Shorewood usually buys boneshaped birthday cakes for her Italian Greyhounds and feeds them slices.

But when Rocky recently turned 10, Robles bought Rocky, as well as his two “brothers” Apollo, 4 and Mickey, 2, individual cupcakes from 2 Paws 4 U Pet Bakery & Treats in Plainfield.

“He (Rocky) put the whole cupcake in his mouth, but it was too big,” Robles said. “He didn’t want to put it down for fear his brothers would take it.”

2 Paws 4 U Pet Bakery & Treats is a home-based bakery featuring homemade healthy treats, specialty baskets, cupcakes, novelty shaped cookies and boneshaped birthday cakes. All treats are safe for humans as well as dogs; some are even wheat-free and grainfree.

Its owner, Carol Burd of Plainfield, also the owner of Precious Pets, a thriving pet-sitting business she began eight years ago, started 2 Paws 4 U last year to provide nutritious treat options to her doggie clients.

“I had heard on the news how treats made by some overseas companies were making dogs sick and some were dying,” Burd said. “I wanted to keep our dogs in the immediately area healthy.”

That business thrived and Burd hired two employees. She is actively seeking a third.

In addition to the customary dogs and cats, Burd has also cared for birds, rabbits and fish; however, Precious Pets services is not limited to those animals. The “purr-fect” employee is flexible, one that can work four to five hours a day (especially midday) seven days a week, Burd said.

Duties may include walking dogs, pottying new puppies or giving medication to ill or senior pets.

For instance, Burd cares for several diabetic cats.

Socialization is also important for pets that are home alone, she said.

“It’s not just, ‘OK, here’s your bowl of food, now go outside’ and then leave.

It doesn’t work like that,” Burd said. “I want someone who likes being with dogs and wants to spend 30 to 40 minutes each time with them.”

Burd applies the same flexibility and versatili-

ty to her pet treats, as she will custom create new flavors and/or flavor combinations for her clients.

Her two most popular flavors are peanut butter and pumpkin.

Other menu flavors include cheddar and bacon, blueberry, honey, apple and zucchini. Vegetables varieties contain ingredients from Burd’s garden, she said. Fun cookie shapes include doggie paws, breed-specific, sports and squirrels, the latter with sprinkling of nuts on their tails.

Pumpkin and flaxseed improve digestion. Although chocolate is toxic to dogs, they can still indulge otherwise as Burd substitutes carob for chocolate in her canine cannolis.

“I taste everything I make,” Burd said. “It’s not the best tasting because there’s no sugar but it’s not horrible.”

Zoie, the 4-year-old Australian Shepherd Corgi mix belonging to Kim McLaurine of Naperville, “dances” when McLaurine brandishes a squirrel cookie. McLaurine first

saw Burd’s pet treats at a Farmer’s Market in Plainfield and decided to take a chance.

“We’d had a lot of issues with store-bought treats,” McLaurine said. “If they were grain-free, she didn’t like them. If they had grain, she’d itch like crazy.”

Not only does Zoie tolerate Burd’s pet treats, she likes all the flavors and now “turns her nose up” and commercial products.

Like Burd, McLaurine has also sampled the 2 Paws 4 U Treats and found the taste similar to human food, except drier. McLaurine has recommended Burd’s treats to every pet owner she knows.

Only Jack, McLaurine’s 7-year-old cat, is left out.

“I’ve asked Carol about cat treats,” McLaurine said, “but she said she is not there yet.”

Homemade cat treats and a storefront are Burd’s long-term goals. A physical location would make it possible for Burd to host on-site pet birthday parties and offer a place where dogs could “share” a muffin with their owners. For now, Burd is busy taking orders for Valentine’s Day treats.

“A couple of days is all I need,” Burd said. “I make everything fresh.”

Brazil dogs plan to hit waves on paddle boards

By RENATA BRITO The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – Selva the surfer wore a lime-green life vest, but her colleagues braved the waters Thursday without protection.

All could at least doggie paddle if they fell off their boards.

About a dozen fourlegged practitioners of stand-up paddle boarding took to the waves with their human owners off Rio de Janeiro’s Barra Beach, practicing for a second annual competition next month in which canine-human teams race around buoys.

Competitors are disqualified if the dog falls into the water.

“The idea started when I was on my board and my dog was tied up on the beach. I said to myself, ‘Man he wants to come to the water!’ so I put him on the board and he loved it,” said Marco Sarnelli, the event organizer.

The race on Feb. 16 is expected to draw as many as 50 dogs and their owners, from border collies to golden retrievers to mutts.

Iracema Braun, a stand-up paddle teacher who charges a little more than $100 a month to take dog lovers and their canines out on the waters twice a week, said that it’s “a sport everybody can do. You don’t have to be an athlete to do it ... any dog can do it.”

Brazilian paddle board enthusiasts aren’t the first to take their pets out on the water.

Experts carry a fair number of percentages around in their heads. Less capable players know a few. This means that when two lines of play present themselves, the expert can usually calculate which is mathematically better. But someone else might have to rely on instinct.

In this example, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads the club queen?

North might have used Stayman to try to find a 4-4 major-suit fit. However, with his points in his short suits, it was reasonable to raise to three no-trump. Using Stayman is fine when you have a 4-4 major-suit fit and game in that suit makes. But when you do not have a fit, employing Stayman just gives the defenders extra information about declarer’s hand.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart, three diamonds and two clubs. If declarer can take five diamond tricks, he will be home. But should he cash the top honors or start with a finesse of dummy’s 10?

A priori, a 3-3 split has a probability of 35.53 percent. Most players know that. But few will be aware that the finessing line will work 42 percent of the time, making it the preferable choice.

Win the first trick with your club ace, play a diamond to dummy’s 10, cash the diamond queen, and claim nine tricks.

In general, try not to bank everything on a 3-3 split.

Teenager’s taxi service has disgruntled rider Dear Abby: I’m a high-school senior.

At the beginning of the school year, I agreed to drive my best friend to school in the mornings, and for a while it was nice.

Last month she started to refuse to talk while I was driving. If I tried talking to her, she wouldn’t respond.

She recently told her boyfriend (who she texts constantly while riding with me) that she didn’t like my driving. I found out because of a post he made on Facebook. When I asked her about it, she said that morning I had slammed on the brakes and it scared her.

This has made me tense and stressed out in the mornings, and I want to stop driving her. My grandmother says I should stick it out instead of causing friction. My mom thinks I should stop driving her, but only if she can find another ride.

I tried to explain this to her, but she won’t listen and I’m still stuck with her. This has ruined our relation-

of a toddler, just had twins. We live four hours away, so I stayed with them for a few weeks to help her and her husband adjust to their larger family. It taught me a lot about how to help new mothers who are feeling overwhelmed.

It’s not about holding the babies; everyone wants to do that. Instead, if you really want to help tired parents, do one of the following: Take the older children to the park, the library, the zoo, to a diner for breakfast. Keep them happy and safe, and bring them home worn out.

Bring dinner or takeout when visiting. Wash, dry and fold the laundry. Get the kids ready for bed, give them their baths, read books to them and wait until they are asleep to leave.

Clean the house, run the vacuum, empty the garbage and change the beds.

Stay dry to reduce frostbite risk Dear Doctor K: My kids love to play outside, even in the cold and snow.

How can I protect them from frostbite?

Dear Reader: Frostbite, ironically, results from the body’s attempt to protect itself against the cold. Our body cares much more about the temperature of its inside self than the temperature of its outer self.

What do I mean? The normal temperature inside our body (our “core temperature”) is around 98.6 degrees F. The organs inside – the brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and others -- function best at that temperature.

When our whole body is exposed to very cold air, it’s our outer organs that start to cool off first. When cold blood in the skin returns to the inside of the body, it threatens to lower the core temperature. To fight against that, when our skin gets very cold the blood vessels in and near the skin start to narrow. As a result, less cold is carried to our insides, protecting our core body temperature.

But protecting the core temperature by reducing blood flow to the outer part of our body can go too far.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff skin clamp down too much, this can cause dangerously low blood flow, particularly in our toes, fingers, ears and nose. The combination of cold temperature and poor blood flow can cause frostbite: the freezing of skin, muscle and even bone.

If your children insist on playing outside in the cold, you can protect them in several ways: • Dress them in loose layers. The outermost layer should be wind-resistant to reduce heat loss. Inner layers of silk, polypropylene or wool will keep them warmer than cotton.

• Keep them dry. Remove wet layers or dress them in layers that wick moisture away from their skin.

If their skin gets wet, it loses heat more easily.

• Be vigilant. Check periodically for signs of frostbite. Your children may not feel your touch on their fingers or toes. Their skin may look waxy, white or lighter than usual, or

it may appear pink or red. It may feel overly soft. As frostbite worsens, the skin may become hard.

• If they start to shiver, have them go inside.

If your children do end up with mild frostbite, gently blow air on the affected area, or place it against a warmer area of the body. For example, place their fingers in between your hands.

If they experience serious frostbite, go to an emergency room as soon as you can. It’s best to warm frostbitten areas under medical supervision, as some attempts to treat frostbite can actually cause damage.

To protect against damage, do not use massage, water warmer than 110 degrees Fahrenheit, or dry heat, such as a radiator or hair dryer, to warm the body part.

Mild frostbite usually heals well without complications. More severe frostbite may cause permanent tissue damage. So be watchful about frostbite. And hope for an early spring!
