34 apply for associate Will County judge vacancy

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Thirty-four attorneys have applied to be an associate Will County judge.

The vacancy was created last month when David Carlson, an associate judge since August 2013, was elected as the judge of a newly created subcircuit.

The new judge likely will be selected in mid-February, Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

The following submitted written applications to the Illinois Supreme Court: Neil Adams, Thomas Allen, Anthony Andreano, John Ardaugh, Michael Bolos, Derek Ewanic, Tina Filipiak, Michael Fitzgerald, Michael Gahan, Gabriel Guzman, Matthew Guzman, Frederick Harvey, James Harvey, Elizabeth Hoskins-Dow, Chantal Host, John Paul Ivec, Michael Kart-

“After we have that information, the 16 circuit judges will meet and discuss every name on the list,” Schoenstedt said. “It’s not the secrecy of electing the pope and [announcing it with] smoke, but it is a confidential process that selects two finalists.”

Schoenstedt expects those meetings will occur at the end of January and the two names

will be revealed once they are submitted to the state. The Supreme Court then sends a ballot to the circuit judges and notifies the chief judge of the final result.

“If everything goes smoothly, the applicant will find out in the middle of February and be sworn in around the middle of March,” Schoenstedt said.

The new judge will be first assigned as a “floater” to cover when other judges are unavailable.

Schoenstedt said judicial applicants must be licensed lawyers in Illinois who are in good standing with the bar association and live within Will County.

During the application process, the sheriff’s office performs a background check and the state bar association takes a poll to learn members’ opinions of an applicant’s demeanor and professionalism.

LOCAL BRIEF Plainfield holds ceremony for fire chief PLAINFIELD – A flag ceremony will be held for Fire Chief John Eichelberger at 1 p.m. Friday, which is his last day on the job.

Eichelberger has been the Plainfield fire chief since 1985 and started with the department as a volunteer firefighter in 1974.

The ceremony will be held at the Plainfield Fire District Administration and Training Facility, 23748 W. 135th St. Eichelberger’s experience with the Plainfield Fire District has included positions as chaplain, lieutenant, captain, second assistant chief and first assistant chief.

Deputy Fire Chief David Riddle will follow Eichelberger as chief.

Will County judges set court assignments; some the same

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Here come the judges. And most, though not all, are going back to the same courtrooms.

“I think everyone is working very well where they are and nobody’s unhappy, but there are a few dominoes that have to be rearranged,” Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

Judges Gerald Kinney and Robert Livas retired at the end of 2014, while David Carlson, Daniel Kennedy and Dan Rippy were elected to the bench.

Jessica Colon-Sayre was appointed as a new associate judge, while Carlson’s circuit election has created another associate vacancy that will be filled in February.

Daniel Rozak has taken over as presiding felony judge

from Livas and will handle arraignments and assign cases to each judge. Carmen Goodman moves from presiding over misdemeanors to felonies and is joined by Amy Bertani-Tomczak, Carlson, Sarah Jones, Carla Alessio Policandriotes, Edward Burmila and Rick Mason.

Jones will supervise the drug court, which purges convictions for substance abusers who complete treatment programs while Policandriotes oversees similar courts for veterans and non-violent offenders.

Susan O’Leary is presiding over the civil division, where cases will also be heard by Bobbi Petrungaro, Michael Powers, Raymond Rossi, Rippy and Roger Rickmon, who moves over from criminal bond court and misdemeanors.

Cory Lund will hold bond

Other misdemeanor judges are Bennett Braun, Raymond Nash and Domenica Osterberger.

Paula Gomora and Jeffrey Allen will hear juvenile cases.

Colon-Sayre will take over traffic court while Joseph Polito and Tom Carney will hold branch court for violations in different municipalities.

Schoenstedt said Theodore Jarz and whoever is appointed to the associate vacancy will fill in as “floaters” where needed.

Chicagoland Speedway immune from noise suits

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Remember the controversial Electric Daisy Festival held at the Chicagoland Speedway in 2013 – with music so loud over three nights that it resulted in hundreds of noise complaints from neighbors miles out?

Changes to state law in 2015 makes it so that the Joliet speedway is immune from civil and criminal liability arising out of such noise or sound emissions.

But the new law is hardly an open-invite for the electronic dance music event to return, Pat Kenney, spokesman for the Speedway, said this week.

The law was designed so the Speedway – and people in earshot of the facility – understand what’s allowed and what’s not allowed as far as noise goes. Currently, offroad riding facilities, such as the Speedway are only immune from liability for noise under “normal” facility use, but the new law would expand the exemption to cover other events.

“It’s a slight change in wording ... the language previously was somewhat vague. It said ‘normal noise.’ From our standpoint, it wasn’t exactly clear on what that was,” Kenney said. “If we have a private team test come in on a Tuesday afternoon, is that classified as normal? It’s about trying to clarify what we are able to do.”

While the EDC concert may have brought the noise issue to light, prompting the changes, the Speedway venue is “not looking to have a 4 a.m. concert again,” as was the case with the EDC concert, Kenney said.

New court fees

Another state law that affects Will County residents gives the County Board authority to impose court fees to help pay for a new courthouse.

Under the measure, the County Board can adopt a fee of up to $30 on civil and criminal cases that require a court appearance. The money collected can only be used for a new courthouse and courtroom construction.

The user fees would be imposed on both parties in civil cases at the time of the first pleading and on defendants who plead guilty in criminal cases. It would not apply in traffic, conservation or ordinance cases when fines are paid without a court appearance.

Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt, who was a major player in getting the legislation passed in Springfield, said it’s a classic “user fee” because it only applies to people who use the facility.

The County Board is likely to pass a fee in the “$25 to $30” range, generating between $1.5 and $2 million a year for the project, Schoenstedt said.

A new courthouse is expected to cost between $140 and $200 million. Officials have not determined how to pay for the rest, saying it will likely be a mix of revenue sources.

New state laws More than 200 new state laws take effect this year – from increased speed limits for truckers and tollways to tougher laws for electronic cigarettes and underage drinking.

Here’s a list: Q Speed limit: Drivers can go up to 70 mph – up from the current 55 mph standard – on Illinois tollways. The same law gives the Toll Highway Authority the authority to lower the speed if conditions are deemed unsafe.

Q Trucker speeds: Another law increases the speed limit for semitrailers to 60 mph on certain interstate highways in Will and other suburban counties. Gov. Pat Quinn attempted to veto the bill after the July 21 deadly crash on Interstate 55 near Channahon that killed five people. But lawmakers overrode the veto.

Q Ticket quotas: Prohibits police from setting ticket quotas for their officers or requiring police officers to issue a specific number of tickets within a certain period of time.

Q License plate stickers: People who like to wait until the last minute to buy a vehicle renewable sticker can now use – though temporarily – the receipt proving they bought the sticker online before the expiration date.

Q Booby traps: Makes booby trapping your home a crime and increases penalties if the home is used for drug manufacturing or distribution.

Q E-cigarettes: Requires electronic cigarettes be sold from behind the counter, in an age-restricted area, or in a sealed display case, to prevent minors from buying them. Another new law requires the state’s department of public health to develop childproof packaging for e-cigarette accessory pieces.

Q Underage drinking: Expands current state law that bars parents or guardians from allowing underage drinking on private property to include vehicles, trailers, campers or boats under their control. If a death occurs, the adult can be charged with a felony.

Q Pregnancy rights: Pregnant woman will have new worker protections. Requires employers to provide “reasonable accommodations” unless it would impose an “undue hardship” on the business. Such accommodations include limiting manual labor, providing more bathroom breaks and a designated space for breast-feeding.

Q Cyber-bullying: Requires schools under certain circumstances to investigate bullying done via cellphone, computers or other electronics means, even if it occurred off-campus.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – The first baby to be born in Will County in 2015 arrived at 2:31 a.m. on New Year’s Day at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Daniel Rodriguez, weighing 7 pounds, was born in the middle of the night to Mariela Rodriguez, 23, and Arturo Roman, of Joliet. He is the couple’s first child.

Daniel’s birth was not in the family’s New Year’s Eve plans, Mariela Rodriguez joked, adding that Daniel wasn’t due until Jan. 8.

“We were making tamales at my mom’s house [on New Year’s Eve] and that didn’t work out,” Mariela Rodriguez said from inside the hospital room, holding baby Daniel asleep in her arms.

Tracy Simons, spokeswoman for the hospital, said about half of all babies in Will County are born at Silver Cross Hospital. There was an influx when the new hospital opened in 2012, she said.

First baby in Joliet

The first baby in Joliet was born at 8:07 a.m. at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Matteo Martinez-Almazan weighed in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces. He’s a first for parents Petra Almazan, 31, and Luiz Martinez, 27, of Joliet.

Almazan said she arrived at the hospital about 10 p.m.

Wednesday, a few hours after her father, who was in Mexico for the past month, arrived back in Illinois.

“We all had a joke going on that he was waiting for my dad,” Almazan said. “He came in [Wednesday] and that’s when I started with the contractions. ... He was wait-

ing for his grandpa.”

Almazan said she never thought she would have the first baby in Joliet for 2015, but her friends and family certainly did.

“I didn’t think I was going to be, but everyone kept saying ‘Just watch.’ ” Almazan said.

Last baby of 2014

Dr. Joyce Albi of Silver Cross delivered the first Silver Cross Hospital baby of 2015 and the last of 2014, Simons said.

The last baby born in 2014 – Ayanna Sophia Campos Marin – was delivered at 9:48 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Cross Hospital to parents Guadalupe Marin, 22, and Alejandro Campos, 21, of Joliet.

Ayanna weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces.

“I was so excited. I was crying outside the room,” Campos said, holding his daughter, barely 14 hours old at the time, in his arms.

“If he would have been in here, he would have passed out,” Marin said, laughing.

OBITUARIES PATRICK J. BALLAK Patrick J. Ballak, age 60, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, December 30, 2014.

Patrick is survived by his loving daughters, Ann Ballak, Tiffany (Efrain Gomez) Ballak, and Suzan (Alfredo) Gonzalez; grandchildren, Armando Ballak, Christopher and Anthony Wilmoth, Heaven Gonzalez, and Carlos Gomez; one sister, Barb Berscheid; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Evelyn (nee Foreman) Ballak.

Patrick was employee at Kittle Automotive for many years and also worked as a private mechanic for John Leach. He was a standing member at the Moran Athletic Club. His passion was working on cars and attending car shows. He will be truly missed.

A celebration of Patrick’s life will begin on Saturday, January 3, 2015, with a visitation at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Rd, Joliet, IL 60435 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service to be held in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. Per Patrick’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded.

Robert was a proud United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II and was a founding member of the American Legion Harwood Post #5. He was also past Trustee of the Lisbon Seward Fire Department where he helped to establish the 911 emergency program in Kendall County, a lifetime member of the Joliet Rivals Club and played clarinet in the Legion Band. Robert started his career passing papers at the Joliet Herald News and moved his way up to plant foreman. He retired in 1975 and became a farmer as well as an entrepreneur in various skills. Robert also loved hunting and fishing. He touched many lives and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to all of the staff at Park Pointe Morris Senior Living as well as Joliet Area Community Hospice for the wonderful care and comfort provided to Robert and his family.

In lieu of flowers donations in Robert’s name to Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.

ALFRIEDA M. KUHAJDA Alfrieda M. Kuhajda (Wojnarowski) “Fef” passed away peacefully, Monday, December 29, 2014, with her daughters by her side. Age 81.

Survived by her daughters, Nancy Kuhajda and Christine (Mark) Deters; two granddaughters, Katherine and Natalie Deters. Three brothers, Richard (Ann) Wojnarowski, Eugene (Florence-deceased) Gawenda and Casimir (Marian) Gawenda. Several

nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Elizabeth (nee Kunke) Wojnarowski; her brothers and sisters, Harriet (Joseph - deceased) Kopernik, Cecelia (Stanley - deceased) Stanek, Eugenia Ritter, Edward (Loretta - deceased) Gawenda, Eleanore Wojnarowski and great-niece, Kristi Sontag.

Born in Joliet to Carl and Elizabeth on October 14, 1933, and a lifelong resident. Longtime member of St. Mary Magdalene Parish and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Graduate of St. Thaddeus Grade School and Joliet Township High School Class of 1951, attended Joliet Junior College.

She was the office manager at Associated Radiologists of Joliet for many years.

Mom always loved the first robin of spring, a great cup of coffee and a good laugh. She believed each day should be a fresh start.

HELEN NIEDRICH Helen Niedrich nee Tynon, age 77, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Survived by her daughter, Sara Niedrich; sister, Marjorie (Charles) Graham; nieces, Jane and Jean Crnkovic; and nephew, Kevin Graham.

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Niedrich; sister, Mary Jane Crnkovic; father, James Patrick Tynon; mother, Madeline (Feaser) Tynon; and step mother, Josephine Tynon.

Born in Joliet, a lifelong resident.

Member of Cathedral of St. Raymond, more recently attending Church of St. Jude. Helen loved spending time with her family.

Graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1955. Married Robert in May of 1965, at the Cathedral of St. Raymond.

She was active in St. Raymond’s School while Sara attended.

She was employed by the City of Joliet as a secretary for many years.

She volunteered at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

Helen was an avid gardener and she enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Because of her kind and generous spirit she will be greatly missed by many.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 9:30 a.m., at the Cathedral of St. Raymond.

Inurnment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.

JOLIET – If you’ve got a real Christmas tree, taking it down quickly is a good New Year’s resolution.

“They dry out, and people are less likely to water them after the holidays,” Joliet Fire Chief Joe Formhals said. “We want people to get those lights off and get them disposed of.”

Formhals said hearing about Christmas tree incidents each year has “hit home” since a Joliet firefighter lost his house following a tree fire two years ago.

“Christmas trees are flammable objects. The longer they’re in your home, the more they dry out, making them a significant fire hazard,” said Lorraine Carli, the National Fire Protection Association’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy.

NFPA statistics show that nearly 40 percent of home fires that begin with Christmas trees occur in January.

Although these fires aren’t common, when they do occur, they’re more likely to be serious.

On average, one of every 40

reported Christmas tree fires in homes resulted in a death, as compared to an average of one death per 142 total reported home structure fires.

“Our hope is that once people understand the fire hazards associated with Christmas trees, particularly as they continue to dry out over time, they’ll choose to remove them promptly,” said Carli.

In Joliet, Waste Management will pick up trees with regular trash pickup through Jan. 30. Trees shorter than 5 feet can be put out in one piece.

Taller trees should be cut in half.

The Will County Forest Preserve District is offering a free tree recycling program through Jan. 10.

Trees will be accepted 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day at four drop-off sites at Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville, Monee Reservoir in Monee, Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher, and Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet.

Trees will be chipped and used as mulch along district trails and for landscaping.

All tinsel, lights and ornaments must be removed before dropping off a tree.

Illinois has no explanation for pot permit delay

CHICAGO – Without explanation, Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration has conceded it missed its end-of-the-year target for deciding which businesses will receive permits to begin the state’s pilot program with medical marijuana. Some observers think the decision could come in a matter of days.

The lag will force cultivation center owners to break ground during the coldest winter months, and, ultimately, delay harvest of the first cannabis crop. Patients who’ve paid $100 for marijuana registry cards will have to wait, perhaps until summer or beyond, before they can legally use the drug. Some patients say they’ll continue to use pot they’ve obtained on the black market.

“I hate to have to do anything illegal,” said Marla Levi, 51, of Buffalo Grove, who uses marijuana for multiple sclerosis symptoms and has been approved as a patient in the new program. “I believe it’s going to happen. In the meantime, I get it how I have to get it.”

The agency leading the program offered no explanation for the setback.

“We are strongly committed to bringing relief to thousands of people across the state and ensuring Illinois is the national model for implementing medical cannabis,” Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said in an email.

“We are working hard to make sure this is done right.”

Illinois donated cellphones distributed to seniors

CHICAGO – The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says more than 25,000 cellphones have been collected for senior citizens to use in emergencies.

Sheriff Tom Dart’s office said Wednesday donated phones are

sent to the 911 Cell Phone Bank, a Florida-based nonprofit organization that strips the phones of personal information and distributes them as emergency phones. Inactivated phones can still call 911 if the battery is charged.

The sheriff’s office says the phones provide security to seniors when they are driving or away from home. People have used them to report accidents and medical emergencies.

Donated phones have been dropped off at dozens of participating libraries, senior centers and police departments throughout Cook County since 2006.

The sheriff’s office Cell Phones for Seniors program takes applications from seniors who don’t have cellphones.

By LAURAN NEERGAARD The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The tequila sure looks real, so do the beer taps. Inside the hospital at the National Institutes of Health, researchers are testing a possible new treatment to help heavy drinkers cut back – using a replica of a fully stocked bar.

The idea: Sitting in the dimly lit bar-laboratory should cue the volunteers’ brains to crave a drink, and help determine if the experimental pill counters that urge.

True, there’s no skunky bar odor; these bottles are filled with colored water. The real

alcohol is locked in the hospital pharmacy, ready to send over for the extra temptation of smell – and to test how safe the drug is if people drink anyway.

“The goal is to create almost a real-world environment, but to control it very strictly,” said lead researcher Dr. Lorenzo Leggio, who is testing how a hormone named ghrelin that sparks people’s appetite for food also affects their desire for alcohol, and if blocking it helps.

Amid all the yearly resolutions to quit, alcohol use disorders affect about 17 million Americans, and only a small fraction receives treatment.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Mario Cuomo, a son of Italian immigrants who became an eloquent spokesman for a generation of liberal Democrats during his three terms as New York governor, has died.

He was 82.

The governor’s office said Cuomo died Thursday, the day his son Andrew started his second term as governor of the state.

He died from heart failure at his home with his family by his side, according to a statement.

Cuomo loomed large in New York politics as governor from 1983 through 1994. He became nationally celebrated for his ability to weave the story of his humble upbringing with ringing calls for social justice.

Greece, Italy vary wildly on ferry missing numbers BRINDISI, Italy – Greece and Italy have issued widely different figures for how many people are still not accounted for in the ferry fire that killed at least 11 people in the Adriatic Sea. The numbers ranged from as many as 98, according to Italian prosecutor Giuseppe Volpe, to 18, according to the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry. Greece says Italy’s list is full of duplications and misspellings but the discrepancy could not be immediately explained since the prosecutor’s office was closed for the New Year holiday.

A tug began towing the fire-ravaged ferry across wind-whipped seas to Italy on Thursday after-

noon. Giuseppe Barretta, owner of the tug boat company, told The Associated Press the operation started near the coast of Albania, where the Norman Atlantic ferry had been stranded after Sunday’s pre-dawn fire, and estimated it could take 15 hours, depending on weather.

Stampede leaves 36 dead, 47 injured in Shanghai

SHANGHAI – Grieving relatives identified the bodies of loved ones a day after a stampede during New Year’s celebrations along Shanghai’s historic waterfront area killed 36 people.

Some families lashed out at authorities, accusing them of being unresponsive to their plight and failing to prevent the disaster.

The chaos began about a halfhour before what was supposed to be a joyful celebration of the start of 2015. In the end, dozens were dead and 47 people were hospitalized, including 13 who were seriously injured, according to the Shanghai government.

Some of the victims had suffocated, said Xia Shujie, vice president of Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital.

Seven of the injured had left hospitals by Thursday afternoon.

The stampede’s cause was still under investigation. It happened at Chen Yi Square in Shanghai’s old riverfront Bund area, famed for its art deco buildings from the 1920s and 1930s. Throngs of people often jam the area during major events.

Beyond marriage, challenges ahead for gay rights groups

By DAVID CRARY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Even as same-sex marriage edges closer to becoming legal nationwide, gay rights advocates face other challenges in 2015 that may not bring quick victories.

In Congress, for example, liberal Democrats plan to introduce civil rights bills in the House and Senate that would outlaw a broad range of discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. However, Republicans will control both chambers in the new Congress, and there is no sign that GOP leaders will help the bills advance.

Absent such a federal law, activists will seek to pass more nondiscrimination laws at the state and local levels, but some efforts are meeting resistance. A conservative-led coalition in Houston is trying to overturn a gay rights ordinance

approved by the city council in May, while a similar ordinance passed in August by the city council in Fayetteville, Arkansas, was repealed by voters on Dec. 10.

The Fayetteville vote was close – the repeal side got 52 percent of the votes – and the issue is expected to resurface.

“Both sides have reason to continue on,” said Mayor Lioneld Jordan, who supported the ordinance. “What we have to do is pull everybody together and see what can be worked out.”

Another contentious issue is the ban on transgender people serving in the military. Outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has suggested the policy be reviewed but gave no timetable, and advocacy groups are increasingly vocal with their impatience.

“There is no valid reason that our transgender troops should continue to be prohibited from serving openly and honestly,” said Ashley

Broadway of the American Military Partner Association, which represents partners, spouses and families of LGBT service members.

Friction over transgender rights also is surfacing in school policies, as evidenced by a controversy in Gloucester, Virginia. Officials at Gloucester’s high school allowed a transgender boy – who was born female – to use the boys’ restroom, sparking complaints that led the county school board to reverse the decision.

The board adopted a policy on Dec. 9 that restricts male and female restrooms to students with “corresponding biological genders” and says transgender students could use an “alternative private facility.”

The American Civil Liberties Union subsequently filed a complaint with the departments of Justice and Education alleging that the new policy is discriminatory and violates federal law.

Thumbs-up to big plans for 2015 The Herald-News Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs-up and thumbs-down: Thumbs-up: To the big 2015 plans for Lockport. With plans for new residential buildings, retail and infrastructure improvements, the city is continuing the momentum from 2014 economic growth projects. This is a good sign of a healthy local economic rebound, which is welcome news to us all.

Thumbs-up: To Plainfield resident and Benedictine University student Samantha Triani, who has logged more than 4,000 volunteer hours and received several awards for her work. Causes have included raising money for breast cancer research, collecting school supplies for children in rural areas in China before a visiting the country during a high school class trip, and packing lunches for Feed My Starving Children. Triani even has designed a program – “Recruit, Train, Retain” – outlining effective volunteer principles.

Thumbs-up: To U.S. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk for their work on the American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act. The act requires a national strategic plan for manufacturing, which in itself will not stop factory jobs from going to other countries. But we can become too accustomed to the notion that we are turning into a service economy. Manufacturing matters in America, and it’s good to see political leaders who think so.

Thumbs-down: To the frivolity that surrounds objections to candidate filings in seemingly every election cycle. In Morris a few weeks ago, objections were made to the lack of proper fastening on filings made by two candidates. As a result, those two candidates were kicked off the primary ballot. Candidates and supporters might see minor and technical violations of filing rules as a way to rid themselves of pesky challengers, but when this happens, voters are disenfranchised.

Thumbs-down: To high gas prices, and we’re glad to see they are going down. How low is low enough? Of course, we consumers always would like them lower. But under $2 a gallon is nice. It looks like 2015 will get off to a great start.

We had seen Christmas displays everywhere since October, even stables it seems, but the one display that caught my eye was on Wood Farm Road in Plainfield, in front of the Living Springs Church.

It looked to be a handmade, larger-than-life-size statue of Joseph leading a pregnant Mary, his wife, on their journey. That’s what Advent is about.

Mr. Czerkies always was there and would help in any way he could.

So, readers, please think of this as Mr. Czerkies’ way of wanting to give back to God for all the blessings that were bestowed upon him. He has done so much for so many people already. We are blessed to have such a wonderful man doing good deeds his entire life. (Many deeds probably have gone unnoticed, until now). In fact, I remember going with my parents to his wedding reception.

Please don’t punish him for wanting to do another good deed.

He is a wonderful, caring man. I just wanted to share this as another way of Mr. Czerkies trying to help a situation in any way he can. Please remember, he doesn’t have to do this – he wants to!

Sparking the comeback for the Bengals (9-4) was Aaron Jordan, who scored 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds despite being plagued by foul trouble. He not only was named to his third-straight all-tournament team but also received the Jeff Stoner MVP award.

Jordan scored 23 points in the second half to seemingly rally East to its second Pekin title in four years. But the Bears (11-2), playing in their first championship game in 19 years at the event, got a trey from Nick Meyer with 1.7 seconds left to clinch the victory.

“We really didn’t start off the way that we wanted to, but in the second half we picked it up and fought back – and that’s a tough team to fight back against,” Jordan said. “We have to put two halves together, and that’s been our problem. Once we do that, the sky’s the limit.

“That game told us something about ourselves. We know that we’ve definitely gotten better since the beginning of the season, but we’re still not where we want to be. It would have been even sweeter to win the championship and get the MVP. But getting the MVP my senior year – knowing what it means – is a great honor, and I’m proud of myself.”

But East was able to pull to within 50-41 heading into the last quarter.

It continued to chip away despite not always having Jordan on the court after he picked up his fourth foul on a charge with 6:11 remaining.

Lake Zurich suffered a key loss when all-tournament pick Mike Travlos (20 points) fouled out on a rebound bucket by all-tourney selection Elyjah Goss (13 points, eight rebounds) that pulled the Bengals to within 54-51 with 3:57 left.

Goss tied the score at 55 on a dunk with 3:11 remaining, then put his team

ahead at 58-57 with 2:17 left. Jordan scored the last of his 106 points for the three days of the tournament when he hit a free throw with 47 seconds left to force a tie at 59.

After calling a timeout with 19 seconds left, the Bears held for the last shot and Meyer (eight points) hit his squad’s eighth 3-pointers of the night shortly before the buzzer. The Bengals weren’t able to get off a final attempt.

“They came out firing from deep, and our rotations were slow at first, so we had to figure out a different game plan in order to stop them,” Goss said.

“Once we started to put the pressure on them, we started to get easy buckets. Coach talked to us about being more consistent on both ends of the floor, and he always says that we can get easy buckets on offense but it starts on the defensive end.”

East, which beat the second and third seeds on Tuesday, also received seven rebounds from James Claar. Lake Zurich also got 15 points from Will McClaughry, 11 points from Jack O’Neill and eight points and seven rebounds from all-tourney pick Nick Penny.

“We didn’t come out with the intensity that we needed,” said East coach Branden Adkins, a Pekin graduate.

“We talked about how we needed to wear them down, so we had to set the tone and just be more intense. And we did in the second half, where we got some easy baskets, but it’s just too bad that we didn’t do it from the beginning.

“They’re a good basketball team, but so are we. I just want us to be the dominant team that I know that we can be. We’re really going to focus on taking the floor the way that we need to so that we don’t put ourselves in this type of situation.”

Joliet West shows heart in tournament loss to Curie

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent PONTIAC – Joliet West fell just a few points short in the fifth-place game Wednesday night, falling to Curie, 80-77, at the 84th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

It wasn’t because of a lack of effort, as the Tigers showed why they will be a team to reckon with this season and beyond.

“All of these kids have bought into the system,” Tigers coach Nick DiForti said. “That

allows us to coach them and they are learning our system.

These kids are exhausted after games. That is the way we play – all out, all the time.”

The Tigers trailed the Condors, 21-10, after the first quarter. But for the remainder of the game, West outscored Curie, 67-59.

“This tournament is huge for our program,” DiForti said.

“To come here and play quality teams night in and night out and compete with them is a testament to our kids.”

“Our seniors are exceptional, hard-working kids, and they make it tough on everyone in practice. We couldn’t play like we did in this tournament without our senior leadership.”

Trailing 56-48 heading to the fourth quarter, the Tigers were relentless and scored 29 points in the quarter. They came within 77-75 with 36 seconds remaining, but ran out of time.

Senior Jeff Washington led West with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Ruwoldt chipped

in 12 points.

The Tigers play three sophomores who either start or get significant playing time – Trevian Bell, Jaron Nabors and Teyvion Kirk. They combined for 23 points against Curie.

“We are young, but this tournament will help us develop and set us up well for the rest of the season,” Nabors said.

“This was a fun experience,” Kirk added. “Look who we played against (Simeon and Curie). This will make our team better; and it shows what

we, as individuals, need to do to get better.”

Bell, the sophomore starter, said, “We came here to measure ourselves against the best in the state. We didn’t win every game; but we played hard, and those teams realized they were in for a fight.”

West opened the tournament with a win Monday over Niles West, fell to Simeon on Tuesday and beat Oak Park-River Forest in an early Wednesday game before the loss to Curie.

WASHINGTON – A bit too much sunshine filled the sky at the opening faceoff of the Winter Classic, and seat cushions rained down when the winning goal was scored just before the final whistle Thursday.

The replica of the U.S. Capitol in center field was a nice touch, given that the real thing is obscured by scaffolding because of ongoing repairs.

Alex Ovechkin, the player most responsible for making the nation’s capital worthy of hosting the NHL’s annual outdoor game, scored a goal, and he also was among the first to mob teammate Troy Brouwer when Brouwer’s power-play goal decided the game with 12.9 seconds to play.

The NHL showcase was every bit the thrill for the host Washington Capitals, who beat

the Blackhawks, 3-2, on New Year’s Day. “We start talking about Winter Classic since we started the season, and this is it,” Ovechkin said. “I remember Brouwie said it’s a good time to show up and make a show. And he did.”

Brouwer scored against his former team to cap a chaotic sequence. Ovechkin had his stick broken on a slash by Brandon Saad. While Ovechkin was raising his hands to make sure the officials would call the penalty, Brouwer gathered the loose puck in the left circle.

“Somebody had to try and keep it alive, so I just kind of turned around, threw it to the net,” Brouwer said. “I’m not even sure where it went in, but I heard the noise of the crowd, heard the noise of the guys on the ice.”

What a noise it was, a playoff-level celebration by players on the ice and fans in the stands,

many of whom flung their commemorative Winter Classic seat cushions high into the air.

It was even more special for Brouwer because his father, who suffered a stroke in 2010, made the rare trip to see his son play in person.

“Knowing how my dad is, right now he’s probably got a couple of tears,” Brouwer said.

The seventh Winter Classic drew 42,832 to Nationals Park, an exclamation point to an event that helped validate D.C. as an established hockey town. Players stood on a sheet of blue ice meant to represent the Reflecting Pool during the national anthem, then faced off under a gorgeous blue sky – too gorgeous, if truth be told.

The sun’s glare on the white ice of the main rink made it difficult to see the puck, and Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner made good on his plan to play the game wearing sunglasses.

Butler, Rose lead Bulls over Nuggets

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Derrick Rose scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, and the Bulls beat the Denver Nuggets, 106101, on Thursday night.

Jimmy Butler scored 26 for the Bulls, and Pau Gasol added 17 points, nine rebounds and a career-high nine blocks.

The late surge by Rose lifted the Bulls to their 11th win in 13 games. The 2011 NBA MVP missed his first eight shots, including all seven in a scoreless first half, but the point guard dominated down the stretch,

coming up with one big basket after another.

Wilson Chandler led Denver with 22 points. Ty Lawson scored 20, Arron Afflalo had 19 points and Kenneth Faried added 18 points. But the Nuggets fell to 4-12 on the road.

The Bulls, who trailed by 13 early in the third, were clinging to a 100-97 lead after Denver’s Jusuf Nurkic scored on a layup with 46 seconds left.

Rose then nailed a jumper, and the Bulls hung on after Faried dunked with 22 seconds remaining to get the Nuggets within three again. The Bulls’ Aaron Brooks hit two free

throws to make it a five-point game before Nurkic hit two of his own after he got fouled trying to dunk on Taj Gibson with 11 seconds left. But Rose then hit two more foul shots to make it 106-101.

The Bulls trailed 74-70 late in the third quarter when Gasol blocked Nurkic. Butler then got fouled and hit two free throws, sparking a nine-point run.

The crowd came unglued when Kirk Hinrich nailed a 3 from the corner with 16 seconds left, giving the Bulls a three-point lead, and Gasol capped the run with a running hook to make it 79-74 22 seconds into the fourth.

Oregon tops Florida State in 59-20 Rose Bowl rout The ASSOCIATED PRESS PASADENA, Calif. – Marcus Mariota and Oregon turned an avalanche of Florida State mistakes into a mountain of points, and the Ducks beat the defending national champion Seminoles, 59-20, on Thursday to turn the first College Football Playoff semifinal into a Rose Bowl rout.

Mariota and the second-seeded Ducks (13-1) scored six straight times they touched the ball in the second half, with five of the touchdowns covering at least 21 yards and the last four coming after Florida State turnovers.

In the matchup of Heisman Trophy winners, Jameis Winston matched Mariota’s numbers, but the Seminoles were no match for the Ducks. The Pac-12 champions will play the winner of the Sugar Bowl semifinal between Alabama and Ohio State on Jan. 12.

Third-seeded Florida State’s winning streak ended at 29. In Winston’s first loss as a college starter, maybe his last game in college, he threw for 348 yards.

No Heisman jinx for Mariota. He was mostly brilliant again. The junior passed for 338 yards and two touchdowns and sprinted 23 yards for a touchdown with 13:56 left that made it 52-20 and made the Ducks the first team to reach 50 points in Rose Bowl history.

Petty completed 36 of 51 passes for a Cotton Bowl-record 550 yards and three touchdowns, two to KD Cannon and the other to 390-pound guard LaQuan McGowan that put Baylor up, 41-21, late in the third quarter.

Jeremy Langford ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans, whose losses were to Pac-12 winner Oregon and the Big Ten champion Ohio State.

Langford’s 1-yard plunge with just under 5 minutes left got the Spartans to 41-35.

Callahan had a 46-yard field goal attempt that ricocheted off the right upright to start the fourth quarter. Michigan State then got Cook’s 8-yard TD pass to tight end Josiah Price and recovered an onside kick. Cook threw a 39-yard pass on the first play after the recovery, but was scrambling to avoid pressure on the next when he threw an awkward pass right to linebacker Taylor Young, who ran 84 yards to the end zone. Young’s apparent touchdown was wiped out by an illegal block, pushing Baylor back to its 43. After Petty’s fourth-down incompletion, Michigan State went 60 yards in nine plays for Langford’s final score.

TAMPA, Fla. – Melvin Gordon ran for an Outback Bowl-record 251 yards and three touchdowns and Rafael Gaglianone kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime to lift Wisconsin past Auburn.

Gaglianone tied it with a 29-yarder with 7 seconds left in regulation. Athletic director Barry Alvarez coached the Badgers (11-3) after Gary Andersen’s move to Oregon State.

Gordon scored on runs of 25, 53 and 6 yards, bouncing back from a subpar performance against Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game to threaten Barry Sanders’ FBS single-season rushing record.

Gordon finished with 2,587 yards in 14 games – second most in FBS history. Sanders had 2,628 for Oklahoma State in 11 games in 1988, when the NCAA did not include bowl results in a player’s statistics.

Nick Marshall threw two touchdown passes for Auburn, which also got a pair of TDs on the ground from Cameron Artis-Payne. The Tigers were unable to move the ball in overtime, though, and lost when Daniel Carlson’s 45-yard field goal hit the right upright and bounced away.

A solid musical outlet Choral with longstanding history in the Plainfield area begins youth chorus

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Last semester, the Plainfield-based Spectrum Singers adult choral group began a youth division for children in third through fifth grades.

Ten children responded and performed at two concerts in December, which included selections from “Frozen.”

Diane Troy, president of the Spectrum Singers and a 15year member, said she’d like to increase membership to 20 kids.

Both groups will perform in a spring concert May 2.

The adult chorus and the youth chorus sing to a piano accompaniment, Troy said, which some people find reassuring. Anyone in the greater Joliet area may join either choral; membership is not limited to Plainfield.

“Even though we practice in Plainfield,” Troy said, “we’re open to anybody.”

Although the Spectrum Youth Singers still is a fledgling group, Troy said, it offers one nice benefit to young singers, even if they participate in classroom music programs in their respective schools – the opportunity to expand their creative horizons in a fun way.

However, the Spectrum Youth Singers is limited to the above-mentioned age group for some good reasons. One, children by third grade can read, which means they’re able to follow the lyrics, Troy said. They do not have to know how to read music.

“Jason Dornink, who directs both the youth and adult choirs, helps the kids to read music,” Troy said. Dornink is a music teacher at Meadow View Elementary School in Plainfield, she said.

High school students in the 12 counties served by the Illinois Tollway were invited to submit original works of art based on this year’s contest theme – tired driving. The contest was sponsored by the Illinois Tollway, Blick Art Materi-

als and CBRE/U.S. Equities.

Karlic received the award at the tollway board meeting Nov. 20 in Chicago.

Her artwork will be used as the cover of the 2015 Tollway Map. Altogether, the tollway received 66 entries from student artists attending 18 high schools throughout the region, from Chicago to Rockford, and 10-semifinalists were selected for public voting.

Almost 9,300 votes from the general public were

recorded online to identify four finalists, with the overall winner and runners-up selected by a panel of judges including members of the Illinois Tollway Board of Directors and representatives from CBRE/ U.S. Equities.

NEW LENOX – The award-winning Lincoln-Way West Marching Warriors began their competitive season Sept. 13 with a top performance at the Morton High School Marching Band Invitational in Morton.

The Marching West Warriors placed first in Class A competition with a score of 62.85. East Peoria High School placed second and Farmington High school placed third.

Victor J. Andrew High School was named Grand Champion overall.

In addition, the Marching Warriors took home the caption award for Best Guard, Best Percussion and Best Winds.

The West band also was able to give a special exhibition before the finals competition Next, the Marching Warriors finished in first place for

Class A, with a score of 69.55, at the Providence Catholic High School Marching Band Invitational on Oct. 4.

In addition, the Marching Warriors took home caption awards for Best Music, Best Visual, Best General Effect and Best Auxiliary.

They also enjoyed a successful completion to their competitive season, finishing in second place for Class 2A at the Illinois State Marching Band Invitational and taking first place in Class A at the Lincoln-Way Invitational.

On Oct. 11, the preliminary performance at ISU qualified them to advance to the finals competition in the evening, where they placed 14th. This was the Warriors’ first appearance in Illinois State Finals since 2010. In addition, the Marching Warriors took home a caption award in Class 2A from ISU for best visual per-

Donkersloot (South) was in four spades. After West led the diamond nine, what did declarer do?

In the auction, North’s four-club rebid showed four-card spade support, at least game-going values and some sort of club control.

Donkersloot realized that he needed the trump finesse to work and that the opening lead had to be a singleton.

(West would have led the jack or ace if he held a doubleton.) So there was a risk that East would take dummy’s diamond queen with his ace and give his partner a diamond ruff. Then a heart shift through dummy’s king, with East holding the ace, would give the defenders the first four tricks. Was there any way to divert the apparent destiny of the contract?

Donkersloot found a fantastic play at trick one -- he called for a low diamond from the dummy.

East automatically won with his jack and cashed the diamond ace.

West, not smelling a rodent, did not ruff and shift to a heart. And then the contract could not be defeated. South won East’s club switch in the dummy, discarded a heart on the second high club and conceded a heart. A moment later, declarer ruffed a heart in his hand, took the trump finesse, drew trumps and claimed.

Now to come clean. This clever play proved unnecessary at the table because West held the heart ace. The contract was unbeatable. But that does not detract from Donkersloot’s imaginative play.

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell which came first, the medical condition or the mood changes. Each of the above conditions can cause a depressed mood, and the stress of a serious illness can trigger depression.

A doctor can help tease out whether mood changes occurred on their own, were caused by a medical illness or were the result of the medical illness. To do so, he or she will consider your medical history and the results of a physical exam and other tests.

If depression springs from an underlying medical problem, the mood changes should disappear after the medical condition is treated. Dear Doctor K: I’ve been feeling down and moody lately, but nothing out of the ordinary has happened in my life. And I’ve always been a happy and positive person. Could something other than depression be affecting my mood?

Dear Reader: Depression is a common problem, and it often is not recognized by either the person suffering from it or that person’s doctor. In fact, I think undiagnosed and untreated depression is one of the most important health problems in the developed nations. It generates enormous emotional suffering – on the part of the depressed person, and that person’s family, friends and co-workers. It also leads to lost productivity.

But while under-diagnosed depression is a big problem, “over-diagnosed” depression also is a problem. Mood disturbances can be caused by a variety of medical conditions or medications. Indeed, this may be true in up to 15 percent of all cases of depressed mood. When the medical condition is treated, or the medication stopped, the mood disturbance goes away.

Yet doctors sometimes misdiagnose such cases as “depression.”

Among the best-known medical conditions that can cause a depressed mood is a thyroid hormone imbalance. Too little thyroid hormone, called hypothyroidism, often leads to depression-like symptoms.

Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B12, can mimic depression.

Heart disease has also been linked to depression.

The following medical conditions also are associated with mood disorders: • multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease; • stroke; • certain hormone deficiencies, such as Addison’s disease; • certain immune system diseases, such as lupus;

Dear Abby: I am recently divorced and now seeing a wonderful woman who is pretty much everything I was looking for except for a couple of issues, which concern going out to eat -- which we do often. Not once has she offered to pay for a meal.

I make good money, but she is not financially strapped by any means.

While I can live with her not paying, what annoys me is she rarely says thank you after a dinner date. Once, she ordered a to-go selection to take home to her daughter.

I paid for it, but again got no thanks. When we arrived at her house, she gave the food to her daughter without mentioning that I had bought it for her.

Other than her manners, she’s a great gal and I’m happy we’re together.

Am I being petty and overly sensitive? My ex-wife never appreciated me, so I guess it’s a sore spot.

NOTICE OF LIEN SALE

The City of Aurora, Kane, DuPage, Will and Kendall Counties, Illinois (the “City”) intends to implement a Mortgage Credit Certificate Program (the “Program”), on its own behalf and on behalf of the other units of local government within the Eligible Program Area (as hereinafter defined) through intergovernmental cooperation, that will entitle eligible low and moderate income first-time homebuyers to a federal income tax credit. Under the Program, a homebuyer who satisfies the eligibility requirements described below may receive a federal income tax credit in an amount equal to the product of the certificate credit rate (from 10% to 50%) established under the Program and the interest paid or accrued by the homebuyer during the taxable year on the remaining principal of the certified indebtedness amount incurred by the homebuyer to acquire the principal residence of the homebuyer; provided, that, if the certificate credit rate exceeds 20%, such credit allowed in any taxable year may not exceed $2,000. In order to qualify to receive a mortgage credit certificate, the homebuyer must qualify for a conventional, FHA, VA or other home mortgage loan from a lending institution, and must meet the other requirements of the Program.

The mortgage credit certificates will be issued to qualified mortgagors on a first-come, first-served basis by the City acting through an administrator, which will review applications from lending institutions and prospective mortgagors to determine compliance with the requirements of the Program, and determine that mortgage credit certificates remain available under the Program. No mortgage credit certificates will be issued prior to ninety (90) days from the last date of the publication of this notice in the Eligible Program Area or after the date that all of the mortgage credit certificate amount has been allocated to homebuyers and in no event with respect to debt incurred after December 31, 2016.

In order to satisfy the eligibility requirements for a mortgage credit certificate under the Program, (a) the prospective residence must be a one-to-four-family residence located within the geographic limits of the Eligible Program Area, that can be reasonably expected to become the principal residence of the mortgagor within a reasonable period of time after the financing is provided; (b) except for residences in certain targeted areas and residences for certain veterans, the mortgagors must not have had an ownership interest in a residence at any time during the three-year period before the mortgage is executed; (c) the prospective homebuyer's current income must not exceed, (i) for families of three (3) or more persons, 115% (140% for targeted areas) of the area median income, and (ii) for individuals and families of two (2) persons, 100% (120% for targeted areas) of the area median income; (d) the acquisition cost of the residence must not exceed 90% (110% for targeted areas) of the average area purchase price applicable to the residence; and (e) no part of the proceeds of the qualified indebtedness may be used to acquire or replace an existing mortgage.
